O

ver the years, Scouting has helped develop strong, independent, community-focused young adults, and the Greater St. Louis Area Council (GSLAC) – Boy Scouts of America has continued to provide opportunities for youth throughout the region. Whether through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities, leadership development or workforce preparedness, Scouting has been there. In 2013, GSLAC launched its Community Outreach Program, designed to make Scouting accessible to all by eliminating major barriers for inner-city and rural youth. Through the formation of strong partnerships with dozens of school districts and community agencies, they have been able to provide nearly 7,500 youth in grades K-8 with in-school and after-school Scouting programs. “Scouts in the Outreach Program receive the same quality program as any Scout,” explains Outreach Coordinator Chrissy Fitzpatrick. “We have developed a comprehensive, year-round program including structured activities for each meeting and leaders to deliver the Scouting programs.” With the support of the Outreach Program, youth membership fees are waived as necessary, and scouts are provided with official Cub Scout and Scouts BSA uniforms. Everyone involved in the program participates in all aspects of Scouting including Pinewood Derbies, STEM activities,

citizenship and leadership training with opportunities to earn badges, participate in advancement ceremonies, outdoor experiences, and camping events. Like many organizations, COVID-19 restrictions have caused GSLAC to pivot its traditional programming. “Of course, we have had to modify … just like the rest of the world. Our in-person delivery model has been put on hold,” Fitzpatrick says. “We have used a variety of unique ways to reach our scouts including live stream Zoom meetings, activity packet pick-ups and pre-recorded video meetings. Our partners have been amazing and receptive to helping us stay connected to our Scouts.” Now more than ever, the GSLAC has made the Outreach Program a top priority to continue supporting youth within our community. “Right now, we’re faced with a very challenging moment in our community,” Fitzpatrick concludes. “It takes a village to support today’s youth, and every bit of support helps.” To support this local Outreach Program call or go online to stlbsa.org. Opportunities include, but are not limited to, volunteerism, Adopt-a-Pack/ Adopt-a-Troop programs, supply donations and monetary donations. HYKEN’S HOMEWORK

ACADEMIC ANXIETY By Dr. Russell Hyken

‌D

uring this time of year, I typically write a column that celebrates the end of summer and provides guidance for the new school semester. Tips focused on family routines, encouragement of consistent sleep, and strategies for studying are standard themes for a late-August or early-September article. These ideas are still relevant, but there is a new bump on the road to academic achievement – COVID-19. The fall 2020 semester will look like no other. No matter how your local district approaches education, student anxiety will most likely be higher than normal as your child faces obvious stressors, as well as underlying uncertainties. As the school year starts, check in with your child and ask what questions he or she has about the upcoming semester. Parents can reduce many concerns with a well-timed conversation. To avoid amping a teenager’s emotions, moms and dads should listen more than they talk. Before the pandemic, students worried

about grades, extracurricular activities and social connections, which are still troublesome problems. But now, teenagers also have additional stresses related to wearing a mask and social distancing. Make sure to validate feelings and offer simple advice that focuses on the present because the future is truly unknown. Once classes begin, if you notice your student excessively checks or reviews his or her work, expresses self-doubt and criticism, or isolates when the school day is over, then your child might be suffering from a mental health concern. In the past, school anxiety often took the form of homework avoidance and attendance refusal. In the virtual world of online learning, however, academic angst will look different and may be less obvious. Some amount of fear and worry is normal. One of the most stressful aspects for COVID-19 is not knowing – not knowing who will be infected next, not knowing who might be a carrier and not knowing when things will return to “normal.”

Wealth Management

When your son or daughter’s distress continually interferes with the ability to focus, it is time to intervene. Consider consulting with a school professional or making an appointment with a therapist if your child seems overly upset. Most important, provide your family with a regular routine. Kids should wake up and go to bed at the same time each day, eat healthy meals with their parents and have designated study and exercise times. Understand the effects these times have on kids, and be alert to your child’s needs. If everyone can act with grace and patience toward one another, this world we are living in will be a better place.

Prior to going into private practice as a psychotherapist and learning-disabilities specialist, Russell Hyken, Ph.D., Ed.S., M.A., LPC, NCC, worked for more than 15 years as an English teacher, school counselor and school administrator. Visit him online at ed-psy.com.

ith a baby comes a bounty of belongings that, in time, become sentimental souvenirs – the baby’s hospital bracelet, that first pair of shoes and that swaddle full of the baby’s sweet scent. And when Ladue resident Lindsay Mullenger couldn’t find a trunk to house such treasures for her daughters, she created Petite Keep. “When I was looking for a trunk myself, I really was looking for an aesthetic that would work in my daughter’s nursery,” Mullenger says. “There were many keepsakes of my daughter’s that I didn’t want to just go put in the attic in a plastic bin. I wanted to be able to have them close in reach. … So quite frankly, I started looking, and the aesthetic that I was really searching for wasn’t out there, and that’s really how Petite Keep was born. I just had a need and didn’t find it in the marketplace.” Mullenger launched Petite Keep in January, offering both a petite and a grand trunk – the petite option measuring 20.4 inches long, 10.2 inches wide and 7.8 inches tall, and the grand trunk measuring 23.6 inches long, 14.1 inches wide and 9.4 inches tall. “It needed to fit an 8-by-11 piece of paper because I have a lot of special documents I wanted to include in their boxes,” Mullenger says. “That large of a box or trunk was really priceprohibited in a lot of places, so I really began searching and reaching out to different artisans.” Both the petite and grand steel trunks feature gorgeous gold hardware and are available in soft hues, including white, gray and pink. “The most important thing to me when we launched was [creating] something really well for our customer,” Mullenger says. “So I didn’t want to come out of the gates and have 10 different offerings and people just be OK with it. I want them to be thrilled with it, so that was intentional.” Customers are even allowed to select from four fabrics – blue gingham, white polka dot,

pink polka dot and floral – for the interior of the trunk, which is embroidered locally with an option for customization. Mullenger continues: “The personalization is completely flexible. We are able to adapt with what the customer wants, so that’s really a custom experience that they go online and build this custom keepsake trunk for themselves, for their children, and then we have a lot of grandparents.” Mullenger has seen monograms, full names and the first initial of a name embroidered inside

a Petite Keep keepsake – a portion of proceeds for which are donated to charities supporting young mothers in the metro area. “When I was kind of building the idea of what Petite Keep would eventually become, I knew for me, a really important part was giving back,” Mullenger says. “I don’t think I realized before we launched how impactful it would be to my customers. … I don’t take that privilege lightly.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Ladue Schools’ Plan By Rhea Patney

‌E

arlier amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ladue School District released a 14-page full-color plan detailing how students would return to school on Monday, Aug. 24, for the 2020-21 school year. That document, entitled the Return to Learn Plan, presented two options for families to choose between, depending on the severity of COVID-19 at any given time. (At a special meeting on Aug. 10, the Ladue Board of Education approved a recommendation that all district students learn virtually from home through at least the first quarter.) Option 1 of the Return to Learn Plan includes three tiers. Going forward students who choose Option 1 will switch among these three tiers. Tier 1 allows for all students to return to in-person school with precautions in place. In the hybrid Tier 2, students are alphabetically divided into two groups, which alternate between online and in-person learning each day. Tier 3 is full-time online learning

for all students – the scenario now in place. Option 2 of the Return to Learn Plan, meanwhile, is a fully virtual option that requires students to commit to online learning for the entire fall semester. The plan was created by Superintendent Dr. Jim Wipke and the Ladue board via survey responses from families and in collaboration with various agencies and authorities. “The difficulty was that things change so much with COVID-19, so even with surveys, by the time you send out the survey and collect information, the data around the COVID-19 cases in the area could have changed, which could influence people’s survey choices,” Wipke says. “I think it’s good we’re going virtual because it would be a danger to our community if we attended school in person,” says Katie Silver, a junior at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. “This is the most logical solution to fighting the pandemic.” Despite the uncertainty of upcoming

fluctuations in COVID-19 numbers and the challenges such fluctuations present, Wipke encourages district members not to lose hope. “Even though it’s going to be different, I would tell people to hang in there,” he says. “When you look at history, you are going to go through ups and downs, and this is just one of those little downward spirals. “There is hope in front of us, and we’ve got to stay positive.”

espite engaging in two of the toughest endeavors in society – operating a thriving restaurant business and mothering a 1-year-old, Nadia – Katie Collier, the namesake of Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria, vivaciously retains her high energy, laughing regularly, freely and brightly. Collier’s laughter permeates a recent discussion of how the tandem enterprise co-owned with her husband, Ted, has pivoted in the COVID-19 era, especially regarding her osteria’s recent expansion into producing affordable frozen pizza with nationwide delivery. That expansion owes its origin directly to the current pandemic, given the Colliers’ desire to continue to employ their 150-strong staff, both during and

It was really exciting and kind of kept hope alive, and maybe saved everyone’s job. We turned our servers into delivery drivers and boxers, and turned the dining room into assembly lines, making these frozen pizzas. – KaTIe COllIer after the governmentally mandated lockdown on restaurants and most other ventures. “It was a quick decision of how are we going to stay in business, how are we going to, most importantly, keep everyone’s job?” Collier recalls. “We didn’t know if restaurants would be able to serve at all, so we had to quickly, quickly figure out a way to solve that problem and keep everyone safe with the information that we had.” The frozen-pizza initiative blossomed from an earlier experiment by Katie’s involving from-scratch meal kits that ultimately proved unworkable. That earlier experiment, though, left Collier and her team with the proverbial lessons learned, allowing them subsequently to leverage the capacity of walk-in freezers at Katie’s and other felicities. as a result, once the COVID-19 lockdown took effect, Collier and her team swiftly prototyped frozen pizzas, launched a dedicated website distinct from that of Katie’s itself (katiespizza.com) and, within roughly a week, got the ball of dough rolling. “It was really exciting and kind of kept hope alive, and maybe saved everyone’s job,” Collier says. “We turned our servers into delivery drivers and boxers, and turned the dining room into assembly lines, making these frozen pizzas. “It was a really cool experience that shows just how a group can come together to survive but also make something really delicious and get it to people in a safe way.” Collier calls the initiative “our proudest moment in business.” In a similar fashion, she mentions

with pardonable pride another longtime initiative at Katie’s, a community give-back program. “We donate 100 percent of our proceeds once a month to a different charity,” Collier says. “We’ve been doing that for almost seven years. and then, we do that with the frozen [initiative], as well – we donate frozen pizzas to food banks with every order.” Moreover, despite Katie’s actual reopening, the new initiative continues to thrive. “The frozen pizzas are still doing really well,” Collier reports. “We recently improved them greatly – the way that we package them, the recipes – and dropped the price down because we know that there’s a financial depression coming, and so it’s important that people are able to buy these things.” Beyond the frozen-pizza initiative, Collier relates how regulars and other customers have reacted to the reopening of Katie’s. “We [serve restaurant customers] in a respectful way, and I think that’s translated into a lot of trust,” she says, mentioning the widespread use of masks and other hygienic products, as well as the installation of an antiviral plasma filtration system in Katie’s ventilation. “The goal of hospitality is, you want people to feel at home and relaxed, and [we] said, ‘Oh, how can you do that when everyone’s on high alert?’ That’s hard, but I think just being respectful, kind and understanding that we’re all in different places mentally right now has produced a really welcoming and good vibe from everybody.” Given her responsibility for and to employees and customers alike, Collier concludes: “You’ve got to err on the side of caution and just keep it as light as you can.” Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria, 9568 Manchester Road, Rock Hill, 314-942-6555; 14171 Clayton Road, Town and Country, 636-220-3238, katiespizzaandpasta.com

Queen of the Garden By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

‌M

ost of us are enjoying a different kind of garden this year, one involving few new annuals and mostly tender perennials that wintered over in the garage, fresh starts from friends or neighbors, and bulbs that came from a mail-order box. My own garden has turned into a riot of color now instead of the usual carefully curated scenes of analogous or complementary hues. Basically, because of the COVID-19 lockdown, I grew what I had on hand from seeds or slips I propagated myself. As a result, my garden abounds in coleus, caladiums, airplane plant and tomatoes. With cucumbers, basil, hot peppers, arugula and other herbs, meanwhile, carefully hoarded squash seeds were sprouted and set in the vegetable garden. Because deer had never before bothered my squash, I took no special precautions about them. This year, though, when I had no way to replace the plants, a doe brought her fawn to dinner – and they ate every single one! I was left with a large open square of earth and zero zucchini. Before I could break out my meager stash of remaining seeds, however, a little miracle happened. Practically overnight, the square filled with aromatic, sticky foliage. Immediately recognizable, a bumper crop of cleome was emerging to fill the vacancy. Thank you, Mother Nature – when one door closes, another one opens! On these long August days, we thus have been able to admire the giant embankment of head-high white, rose and lavender spider flowers, with plenty to cut for the kitchen table.

30    August 28, 2020 | LadueNews.com

If you’re not familiar with cleome, you should be. An easy-to-grow annual from South America, it readily self-seeds – to the annoyance of some and the delight of others. My grandmothers both grew it in their respective gardens. Considered by some to be old-fashioned, it actually strikes me as hip in an architectural way, with long, slim seed capsules

arching out from the main stem like a giant, green bottle brush. Many spider flowers are now fully blooming in the mixed border of the King Louis IX statue at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Drive by to see how well they layer in with airy elegance to the blend of annuals and perennials. To start cleome for your own garden, buy or beg some seeds, scatter them in the spring – and simply wait. Shop for the very tall ‘Queen’ series in white, rose, cherry or violet, the pure white cultivar ‘Helen Campbell’ (a Royal Horticultural Society winner of the Award of Garden Merit) and the slightly shorter ‘Spirit’ series. The 3-foot ‘Sparkler’ series comes in rose, white, lavender and a stunning bicolor rose called ‘Sparkler Blush’ (an All-America Selections Award winner). Last but scarcely least, the ‘Senorita’ series has been selected for container use; compact and never leggy, it’s thornless and sterile – meaning it won’t self-seed.

rom colonial times to the present, the metro area has long laid claim to an extraordinarily rich architectural past – and rightly so. But what of its future? To obtain in-depth, cutting-edge insights into that topic, one need only survey two distinguished faculty members of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis: Eric Mumford, Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture, and Patty Heyda, associate professor of urban design and architecture. Heyda also co-wrote the 2016 text Rebuilding the American City, one chapter of which focuses on McRee Town, now known as Botanical Heights – a St. Louis neighborhood both she and Mumford repeatedly cite. First, the two of them reflect on how architectural trends in the area have shifted during this millennium – including societal impacts of such shifts. “Earlier debates about traditional versus modern design seem to have become less intense here,” Mumford says. “There’s also less controversy about the importance of trying to use design to positively effect social change … “There’s also been a notable shift since the 1990s toward replacing existing housing with more expensive housing in the suburbs. This has often resulted in tearing down smaller, older homes and replacing them with larger ones. Occasionally, modern houses and their surrounding landscapes of real architectural value have been destroyed in this way. Concerns about this may be increasing.” Heyda concurs with her colleague, expanding on his answers. “The New York Times wrote about the emergence of new and renovated houses in older parts of cities – the ‘boxy modern’ and Craftsman-style homes are the trend, with bright green or coral doors,” she says. “While fun colors are popping back up in cities, many locals take that as a sign of gentrification … “In general, St. Louis has some of the most beautiful and well-built stock of housing and buildings in the country. Unfortunately, even in this millennium, we still witness wholesale clearing of these historic blocks, with the resident displacements that go with it ... “New homes across the metro area – consistent with the rest of the country – have lost important elements like the deep front porch that used to shield from summer sun but also that allowed semipublic interaction between neighbors with the public space of the street. Front porches have gone away in favor of serviceoriented garages. The social space that porches provide has moved to the decks in the back – isolated to the private realm. This kills the important social role of streets – public space – in cities.

We’re one of the few U.S. metros where there’s still access to reasonable options for housing, something worth protecting.” – PATTY HEYDA

“But one general positive trend is the return of building for density, even in the suburbs, with multifamily housing and mixed-use buildings that allow retail on the ground level and apartments above.” Next, the pair address architectural trends in other parts of the nation that seemingly have bypassed the area. “In most American cities, the trend is that there’s not enough goodquality, truly affordable housing near transit and centers of work for lowincome families, single moms, college grads, retirees,” Heyda says. “If St. Louis slightly lags behind the rest of the nation in pushing housing to the brink, then that’s a good thing. We’re one of the few U.S. metros where there’s still access to reasonable options for housing, something worth protecting.” The Sam Fox School colleagues continue in a tandem progressive fashion regarding noteworthy potential architectural trends. “Many architects have been concerned with various sustainable design strategies for several decades now,” Mumford says. “In this metro area, those have often been resisted. “Since at least the 1920s, architects have often explored affordable housing strategies, ranging from designing very small units that nonetheless have access to sunlight and walkable amenities nearby, to various kinds of prefabrication. These directions remain controversial and are often forbidden by old zoning codes that require widely spaced single-family houses on each lot.” For her part, Heyda broaches the topic of eco-friendliness. “We need to see rapid building-industry and policy shifts that help all new buildings in the city and suburbs use renewable energy systems to the extent their exposure and site allow – such as solar panels, geothermal heat systems and supplemental graywater systems for lawns and toilets,” she says. “The technology is here, and other cities have proven it’s possible, even when that means overcoming the political resistance to such things.” Finally, Mumford and Heyda laud various area loci as current hotbeds for architectural innovations – with the former specifically mentioning a location likely near and dear to both of their hearts. “Weil Hall and the new East End of the Washington University campus

are very successful in terms of design, public space and ecological landscape design,” Mumford says. “Citygarden [in downtown St. Louis] and the renovation of the Arch grounds are also very successful in design and public space terms, but efforts like these cannot address St. Louis’ obvious social deficiencies and racial divides in themselves. The current Brickline Greenway effort [the section of the Great Rivers Greenway stretching from Boyle Avenue to Sarah Avenue] could also have a major positive effect in design terms on the region. “There’s also a lot of potential for more interesting architecture and public space design in the suburbs.” Heyda, meanwhile, revisits an earlier subtopic from a different perspective. “Botanical Heights … models trendy features,” she says. “The western blocks have infill developments that are boxy and contemporary, with bright green doors. They have renewable energy options. The houses are contextual in keeping within the lot lines of the neighborhood, and inside, the throughlines of doors and windows allow for ventilation. Even with new construction there, the overall tight density and grain of the historic neighborhood feel the same. “It’s complicated, though, because these redevelopments were enabled by a massive clearing of residents, in the six blocks to the east. The much more suburban homes that were rebuilt on those eastern blocks do not model sustainable architecture. The residents who called the neighborhood home were almost all driven out or forced to leave. “The area may be a ‘hotbed for innovations,’ but seen in the longer view, it’s a cautionary tale of displacement and destabilization, too, that I hope the city can continue to learn from.” Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis, Campus Box 1213, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, 314-935-9300, samfoxschool.wustl.edu

hen it comes to the real estate industry, experience is invaluable. This has been the backbone for local real estate group The Ryan Tradition. Built on more than 50 years of excellence, The Ryan Tradition has garnered a reputation for exceptional service. “The Ryan Tradition dates back to 1965, when Anne Ryan joined the venerable Ira E. Berry Company,” John Ryan recalls. “In 1978, she started their Fine Properties Division. In 1992, about the same time that Coldwell Banker purchased Ira Berry, John Ryan joined Anne after 14 years in the commercial real estate industry.” Today, The Ryan Tradition has been a market leader serving the metro area luxury home market for 55 years. The group has taken part in significant transactions, including construction projects, land sales and the relocation of executive families. “Providing exemplary service, backed by unmatched knowledge and experience, is our hallmark,” Ryan says. One of Ryan’s most recent properties is 23 Overbrook Drive, pictured here. “This is a 4-year-old property with 8,856 livable square feet

overlooking the Old Warson [Country Club] golf course,” Ryan explains. Located in Ladue, the property is priced at $3.35 million. Property features include exceptional architectural details; hardwood floors; custom millwork; 10’ minimum ceiling heights and 8 foot doors; a fabulous kitchen; spacious hearth room; and finished walk-out lower level. Both screened and open porches overlook the 1.89-acre property and the golf course, and the open layout leaves plenty of room for entertaining. “We are following company guidelines and practicing social distancing,” Ryan adds regarding COVID-19. “We have had no trouble serving clients [and ensuring] all of their real estate needs were provided for.” For the experience and commitment to client service that make each transaction a professional and pleasant experience, look no further than The Ryan Tradition. GATHERINGS & GOODWILL YOUTH IN NEED

CELEBRATION OF YOUTH Photos and story by Micah Usher

‌Y

outh In Need hosted its annual fundraiser, Celebration of Youth, in March in the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles’ Discovery Ballroom. The event began with a sponsor preview party, followed by dinner, a live auction (with numerous items available to aid in fundraising) and an after-party. The honorees of the event were the Florida-based JM Family Enterprises, Inc. and Mary Krogmeier for their years of support and service to the organization. One of the leading youth organizations in the metro area, Youth In Need provides programs and outreach at nearly 100 locations in six Missouri counties to foster healthy development for children, teens and families. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!

ln

Celebration of Youth is Youth In Need’s largest fundraiser, and it helps more than 8,000 children and youth in crisis we will support this year. It’s our 33rd year for this event, and once again, we’re proud to have a sellout crowd in attendance. It’s amazing to see so many champions for children come together from all over St. Louis to support us and those we serve. – PAT HOLTERMAN-HOMMES, 58    August 28, 2020 | LadueNews.com

DINNER TO GO

Charred Crust By Mabel Suen

‌C

harred Crust, one of Clayton’s newer eateries, offers a limited lunch and dinner menu available for pickup via online ordering and features contemporary American favorites like sourdough-crust pizzas, salads, house-made pastas and sandwiches. The restaurant, which debuted last summer, comes from two seasoned fine-dining chefs and business partners: Andrew Simon and James Flemming. The pair formerly served as the executive chef and executive sous chef at Scape, respectively, and Charred Crust ranks as the St. Louis natives’ first foray into restaurant ownership. “We’ve never been big lunch guys and have always done dinner service, so we thought about how we could bring the flavor profile of refined dining to a lunch business,” Flemming says.

62    August 28, 2020 | LadueNews.com

“Our goal is to be able to deliver that type of product in a casual setting,” Simon adds. “It’s contemporary American cuisine with a modernday twist, where the charring comes into play. We both love the creative, artistic side of the industry and push it to the limit.” The from-scratch menu features pizzas on house-made sourdough crust. Specialty pizza options include sausage and roasted garlic with fresh mozzarella; pineapple with BellaVitano and Parmesan cheeses; goat cheese with pickled red onion and arugula; and a Mediterranean-inspired pie with spinach, red peppers, feta, pesto and banana peppers. Alternatively, customers can build their own pizza by selecting from more than a dozen toppings, including such unique options as

charred almonds, pork belly and an egg sunny side up. A house linguine option comes with shrimp, sausage, arugula and tomato, with chicken also available as an add-on. The house salad comes with pickled onion, cheese, banana peppers, egg yolk and the diner’s choice of dressing: charred thyme vinaigrette, smoked Caesar or charred orange vinaigrette. A few sandwiches are also available, such as ham, turkey or three-meat. Side options include charred veggies, house fries, root chips and charred pineapple. “We have a huge passion for this business, and we hope that’s enough to entice people to come here and give it a shot,” Flemming says.

ARTS SPEAK

Live Theater Alternatives By Mark Bretz | photos courtesy of Justin Been, The Muny and the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival

‌W

hen the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in the metro area, it shut down “live” theatrical performances quickly and decisively. Luckily, although we’re still in a holding pattern, a number of local companies are still offering enticing options for patrons. The St. Louis Shakespeare Festival presented a streamcast performance of Cymbeline in late March, with the cast of its touring production doing their version of the play on a stage with the audience online rather than in theater seats. Likewise, ERA (Equally Represented Arts) staged a whimsical Zoom performance of Moscow!, in which a dozen or so players enacted their parts in their own homes in a clever take on Chekhov’s Three Sisters. Metro Theater Company in late July offered an original, 15-minute piece by local playwright John Wolbers titled Early Days: Stories of the Pandemic, which was streamcast on MTC’s Facebook page, as well as that of the Missouri History Museum. In the poignant little story, three generations of a family (Nicholas Kryah, Jacqueline Thompson and Madeline Emke) meet via Zoom to celebrate the granddaughter’s birthday as best they can. In that brief period, Wolbers touched on a number of affecting moments impacting numerous families around town, such as the recent passing of the family’s matriarch, whose wake and funeral essentially were virtual because of the pandemic. Still, the surviving family members use their Zoom get-together to reaffirm their love and bring happiness to one another, even in trying times. Artistic director Julia Flood brought out convincing performances by her fine trio of players. Stray Dog Theatre artistic director Gary Bell partnered his troupe with Surfcode, utilizing its platform PlayPlay.tv, to enable the first 750 people who took advantage of making reservations to view the troupe’s virtual production of Lobby Hero, which originally was part of its 2019-20 season before the pandemic forced the company to shut down its

theater at Tower Grove Abbey. Bell directed the absorbing presentation of Kenneth Lonergan’s drama and its cast of four characters in a production recorded “live” on Stray Dog’s stage, with each actor confined to an individual, custom-built “acting booth.” Stray Dog’s news release noted that rehearsals for the show “were held in compliance with both state and local ordinances, including temperature checks, required face coverings and social distancing.” Masks weren’t used in the production, but the physical separation of the players enabled them to perform without endangering one another. Bell used the screen to present the characters individually or in clusters, depending on the scene being presented, thereby effectively breaking up the potential sameness of the presentation. Although perhaps not as invigorating as a traditional performance before an in-house audience, Stray Dog’s presentation of Lobby Hero showed how an enterprising troupe can deal with a crisis and still pull together a credibly crafted theatrical work. With the presence of the novel coronavirus, the ninth annual St Lou Fringe Festival took place virtually this year. Current events served as inspiration for performances exploring topics such as Black Lives Matter, COVID-19 and trans rights, among others. Artistic director Matthew Kerns oversaw productions such as HERstory of HIStory, a performance poetry piece from Chicago slam poet Heather “Byrd” Roberts and Company. The

festival also included an opera in progress, The Making of Flame & Shadow, about St. Louis native and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Sara Teasdale. The Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis revived an art form popular in the mid-20th century – radio theater. Something Spoken: Tennessee Williams on the Air premiered on July 11 and will air every other Saturday through Sept. 26 on Classic 107.3 (classic1073.org) and TWSTL (twstl.org). The Muny delighted more than 100,000 viewers this summer with its five-week “live” variety series, hosted by Muny artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson. The streamcast productions featured past Muny performers from around the nation contributing pieces via Zoom, as well as weekly “live” contributions from a weekly guest artist at The Muny’s Culver Pavilion. And St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, which wasn’t able to go forward with its presentation of Much Ado About Nothing in Forest Park, instead is offering A Late Summer Night’s Stroll, a free, outdoor, 90-minute walking experience through Sept. 6. In partnership with PaintedBlack STL, 14 works of art have been installed along marked paths in Forest Park. The program also includes performances by Opera Theatre Saint Louis, The Black Rep, Poor Monsters, Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble, Jazz St. Louis, Big Muddy Dance Company and others.

THE WINE LIFE By Stanley Browne

‌2018 GOLDEN WEST Grapes: 100% Pinot Noir Location: Royal Slope, Washington Owner/Winemaker: Charles Smith Approximate Retail Price: $22 Website: winesofsubstance.com TASTING NOTES: Color: Bright and reflective, slightly garnet with hints of bronze, reminiscent of an aged Burgundy Aroma: Slightly earthy and rustic, with black cherry, dried strawberries, spice and leather Taste: Subtle fruit at first, but increases quickly, with beautifully balanced acidity and finish

A

few years ago, a winemaker named Charles Smith, in association with high-profile Washington State winemaker Brennon Leighton, planted pinot noir in a small vineyard called Golden West

to prove one point: that one could make good pinot noir in the Evergreen State, there in the northwestern corner of the continental U.S. Attempts had been made in the past, of course, but to varying degrees – usually unsuccessfully. The state’s wine regions tend to warmer climates, lending themselves to more durable varietals such as syrah, cabernet and merlot. Pinot noir, with its thinner skin and temperamental nature, does not excel in heat. But in a small area, soon to be given the federal American Viticultural Area designation Royal Slope, at a higher elevation overlooking the Columbia River, Smith found a microclimate in the Golden West vineyard with cooler weather and soils similar to the Burgundy region in France. The wine under inspection here, the 2018 Golden West, was released

this year; it has garnered immense praise, scoring high with some of the more respected evaluators. Smith and his team not only succeeded in proving that one can make quality pinot noir in Washington State but also succeeded in emulating the Burgundian style of pinot noir. Food Pairings: Lean red meat like fillets, any dish with mushrooms, tuna or salmon, leafy salads with vinaigrette and soft cheeses all would find an aureate complement in the 2018 Golden West.

LIVING WITH NEUROPATHY, IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO SETTLE FOR POOR BALANCE BY: DR. BETH TEMPLIN, PT, DPT, GCS GERIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPIST

I frequently get asked about neuropathy, or the loss of feeling in your feet, and how it effects balance. A common misconception is there's nothing that can be done to help neuropathy or improve balance. Those suffering from neuropathy will most often report symptoms of pain, weakness, numbness and tingling in the feet and legs. Depending on the underlying cause of the neuropathy, some of these symptoms can be managed. The most common type of neuropathy is caused by diabetes. Your nerves are very sensitive to the sugar levels in your blood. Chronically high blood sugar levels cause nerve damage. The more your blood sugar levels are controlled and within a normal range, the better your neuropathy symptoms will be managed. Vitamin B12 deficiency is another common cause of neuropathy in older adults. A lack of this vitamin will damage the protective layer that surrounds the nerves. This type of neuropathy can be addressed with proper vitamin supplementation. Conditions of the back and spine such as spinal stenosis can also produce similar symptoms. When the spinal column is compressed, the nerves are damaged from the additional pressure. This leads to pain, numbness and weakness. Core strengthening for better back support and spinal alignment can relieve the added pressure on the nerves and help relieve symptoms. Don't believe that just because you have neuropathy you are bound to have poor balance and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not true. We specialize in helping people with neuropathy improve their balance daily. Your balance not only depends on the feeling in your feet, but also your leg strength, vision and inner ear. People with neuropathy have the ability to improve all of these areas, which contributes to improved balance. More specifically, we look at several things like ankle motion

and strength. When your ankles are stiff and weak, you are less able to adapt to changes in the ground, making you more unstable. Most often these two things can be improved in people with neuropathy. Another technique we use in therapy sessions is called sensory integration. While you may have lost some of the feeling in your feet, you usually have not lost 100% of it. In therapy, we teach you to pay attention to the feeling you have left. This technique improves your awareness of where your feet are and how you stand and walk on them, which of course leads to better balance. Some patients with neuropathy also benefit from the use of an assistive device like a cane or walking poles. Using a device can provide increased stability when walking, especially on uneven surfaces like grass or gravel. Another thing to consider when you have neuropathy is proper fitting shoes with good arch support. As the muscles in the feet get weaker from the neuropathy, it can cause your arches to fall, leading to increased pain. It's also important to check your feet daily for any skin issues. With the loss of feeling in your feet, injuries may go unnoticed. Small areas can quickly turn into big concerns when left untreated. If you have pain or numbness in your feet and you're concerned about your balance, there is hope and we can help! Let our team of experts help you regain your confidence and balance. estled on nearly 15 acres in Wright City, roughly 40 miles west of Ladue, sits Long Row Lavender – a family farm featuring a cozy café, a beautiful boutique and, of course, long rows of lavish lavender that make it a delightful daytrip destination. “Honestly, [Long Row Lavender] came from a motivation for wanting our children to be outside and wanting them to learn how to grow something and keep something alive,” says Long Row Lavender owner Tracy Smith, who is the mother of four. “Really we wanted them to be able to play outside and be with us as we worked.” Smith and her husband, Chad, purchased the Long Row Lavender property in 2007 and started planting vegetables on the plot in 2009. However, to their dismay, both deer and rabbits were eager to enjoy the fruits of their labors. “We were finding all the woodland animals were coming out and eating everything,” Smith says. “At the time, I was reading a Midwest Living magazine, and in one of their magazines, they were featuring lavender farms in the United States. I was reading about them, and they were beautiful – these beautiful destination places. Then I read that rabbits and deer won’t eat them, and I thought, ‘We should plant lavender!’”

Smith says that for approximately five years the family grew lavender – selling lavender bundles, lavender wreaths and lavender sachets at the local farmers market – before deciding to build a barn for a boutique, which opened on May 27, 2016. “In the boutique, you’ll find high-end home décor, all the products that we make in-house, which are linen sprays, lip balm, bath truffles, body butter, sugar scrubs – those types of things,” Smith says. “And then candles and soap and all the accessories that kind of go with a spalike feel for a bathroom.” The boutique also has a bounty of houseplants. “We purchase houseplants from a local grower, and then we repot them in a really pretty container that’s going to fit the style – minimalistic, modern – so they are not rootbound,” Smith says. “It’s a mixture of fiddle-leaf figs, jades, succulents – any kind of houseplant we can get our hands on that will be easy for the consumer to keep alive in their home.” The most recent renovation to the farm was an addition of a quaint and cozy café in 2019. “People who would come from St. Louis were saying to us, ‘Please make food,’” Smith says. “They would travel all this way and be like, ‘Is there a place to eat?’ and they didn’t really want to leave the farm, so I told my husband, people are asking, and I knew they were right.” The café serves Kaldi’s coffee, locally blended

teas that, of course, include Long Row lavender and desserts – pies, cookies and cakes galore – baked homemade onsite. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the café also serves lunch – soups, salads, sandwiches and more – that Smith keeps as seasonal as possible. “As we began to learn about the plant, we felt like, ‘Wow, this is such a versatile plant,’” Smith says. “You can use the whole thing. Not only can it be used for bath and body products and home products, it can be used as culinary. So we just felt like there’s so much that you can do to create a value-added product for the consumer.” The boutique and café, though, are an added bonus to exploring the bountiful farm that has a field of not only lavender but also peonies, zinnias and sunflowers in their respective seasons. “This wasn’t a ‘Let’s have a lavender farm, and this is how we are going to do it’,” Smith says. “We just had a dream of everyone working together when we were younger. … Having a business and having it grow at the pace that it has grown has been a real kindness to me because I’ve been able to still be involved in the day-to-day things that go on in a family. I’m just really grateful for how this has come about.” Long Row Lavender, 26549 S. Stracks Church Road, Wright City, 636-699-0690, longrowlavender.com
