INNOVATIONS IN TEXTILES STL 2019

DURANGO CIGAR LOUNGE

Colloquially IT19, the Innovations in Textiles STL 2019 mega-event commenced earlier this month and extends through November – and program coordinator Anne Murphy gives LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach the scoop on it.

LN regular Drew Gieseke braves the smoke and mirrors at the Durango Cigar Lounge in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood to chat with manager Zach Gzehoviak about that establishment’s benefits for devotees of top-notch tobacco.

On the cover 10 For more than 30 years, the attorneys at Hais, Hais & Goldberger have kept their focus on family law and helping their clients through complex, and often emotional, proceedings. On page 10, Sam Hais talks about the importance of valuing family and the rewards he finds in working in family law. Photo by Sarah Conroy.

EDITOR AT FAMILY GATHERINGS OR ON VACATIONS, IT HAS BECOME the norm for the men in our family to break out their cigars and enjoy a nice scotch or bourbon while catching up. Although I’ve never truly understood the appeal of either, I’ve learned that if it brings my husband joy, it brings me joy. And I’ve also learned that such quality time is apparently more common than I ever knew. Enter: Durango Cigar Lounge. Durango Cigar Lounge is a membership-based establishment in Brennan’s in St. Louis’ Central West End that is moody, handsome and a one-stop shop for kicking back with friends and family. Starting on p. 52, LN contributing writer Drew Gieseke gives readers an inside look into Durango and delves into its offerings further. Also in this week’s edition, learn more about Nehring Design, which is helping commercial businesses create spaces to support and empower their work environments. Starting on p. 29, LN writer Brittany Nay shares the inspiration behind this Webster Groves business and how it’s shaking up client spaces. All the best,

ais, Hais & Goldberger hass b been providing iding family llaw services i es fforr the St St. Louis area for more than 30 years. Started by Susan Hais and later joined by her husband, Sam, the couple has brought together their individual strengths and their dedication to family to create the ultimate powerhouse in family law. The firm has grown since its inception with attorneys like Elliott Goldberger – the third powerhouse to the firm’s name. Sam Hais notes, though, that in keeping with the specific practice of family law, they’ve purposefully kept the number of lawyers at no more than eight. “That’s a good amount to keep it manageable while still being able to service all the needs of our clients,” Sam Hais confirms. The firm has also used the services of accountants, psychologists or psychiatrists for specific cases. “When appropriate, we utilize the services of expert witnesses or advisors in family law cases.” Hais says that the firm’s success is owed to knowing the value of family. “When people come here and tell us their marital problems, we try to give them the best advice we can from their point of view. We put their troubles into perspectives with which we empathize.” Sam Hais adds that helping people going through these emotional times is

It can be a very, very upsetting experience, and we understand that. We put the clients first above our own wishes.” Putting clients first also means being patient throughout the entire process. “[We’ve learned] if we go out of our way to explain the intricacies of trial procedure, it’s much easier to make clients understand the goals,” Sam Hais explains. “We try never to add to their stress and we find that they appreciate that.” A quick look at the firm’s testimonials is proof that their clients agree, and so are the awards that the Hais, Hais & Goldberger firm boast. “Susan set up a great firm. I’ve been fortunate to be a member of it after having been a judge for more than 20 years,” Sam Hais says. “It’s been great. We share everything; our work, the things that we’re interested in, whether it’s work or play. It’s been a blessing.” Hais, Hais & Goldberger, 222 S. Gateway to Hope’s success is measured not only by the number of lives we have saved but also by the number of people who have rallied to the cause. Our supporters are the true unheralded heroes. Our patients’ stories are heartbreaking and inspiring, and their gratitude for the care our organization provides is humbling.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DRINK Photos and story by Diane Anderson

T

he Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis recently held a rooftop party, dubbed A Midsummer Night’s Drink, at its Centene Center for the Arts in St. Louis’ Covenant Blu-Grand Center neighborhood. The evening celebrated the area arts and creative community and abounded with the arts, from music by Makeda Kravitz to live art creations and more, all in the heart of the Grand Center Arts District. Guests enjoyed food and drink from local culinary experts and mixologists. Proceeds from the event – the signature fundraiser of the council’s Young Friends of the Arts – benefit the council.

Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition’s

BOUTIQUE BLOWOUT Photos and story by Jon Saucier

T

he Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition recently held its annual Boutique Blowout in the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac. At the event, an array of local boutiques offered guests end-of-season deals. Attendees passed the day sipping cocktails and browsing the latest fashions. Swag bags full of coupons and other goodies also went to guests, who had the chance to compete for door prizes. Proceeds from the event support the coalition’s mission to help local children find forever homes.

Boutique Blowout is a great way for members of the community to support local businesses and children in foster care. The boutiques provide such a variety of fashions and merchandise – there is something for everyone. Shoppers come to help kids in foster care find their forever family and leave with tons of great deals. And boutiques can donate their remaining merchandise to the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition for their resale boutique, ReFresh. It’s a win-win-win.

AN AREA ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM STRIvES TO INFUSE EACH OF ITS COMMERCIAL CLIENTS’ CORPORATE CULTURE INTO THOSE CLIENTS’ SPACES.

N

ehring Design thinks outside the standard office cubicle – designing unique work environments that help local companies inspire their employees for both local and national clients. For more than a decade, the Webster Grovesbased full-service architectural and interior design firm has created commercial spaces aimed at elevating brands, enhancing function and engaging employees. In everything from corporate work environments to hospitality spaces, its contemporary spin on openconcept gathering areas encourages communication, productivity and creativity. “Our style is reflected by the ideology of what our clients are looking to achieve in their spaces, and many clients come to us to incorporate a modern approach and infuse their brand within the architecture of their space,” says firm founder and principal Alan Nehring, a southern Illinois native and a Southern Illinois University-Carbondale graduate with a Master of Architecture degree, who moved here in 1993. After working for a few other area architectural firms, Nehring launched his eponymous design company in July 2008, seeking to infuse every client’s unique brand into the architecture of that client’s space and to create collaborative environments through interior design and architecture. To help achieve those goals, Nehring employs a small, engaged and tightknit team consisting of two architects, four interior designers and an administrative staff member. With each project, the firm strives for a cohesive design that incorporates “green” products and materials, locally sourced items when appropriate, and a signature/class furniture piece that reflects the client. “We strive to design space(s) that function for the client first and foremost, but creates a positive impact to those using the space,” Nehring says. “This is achieved by incorporating great flow, views/daylight, a palette of various materials and textures, lighting and acoustic solutions that provide each user with a positive place of space to relax, complete tasks or just be.” From designing in hospitality, health care and other corporate sectors, the firm’s projects have included local construction firms, such as Bommarito Construction; accounting firms, such as Anders CPAs + Advisors; law offices, such as Evans Dixon; health care facilities, such as Esse Health Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine; group housing, such as St. Dominic Priory; and nonprofits, such as Friends of Kids With Cancer. For every project, Nehring’s team works directly with the client during a five-step process. “The first phase of design starts with listening and asking the right questions to understand our clients’ goals, wants and needs,” Nehring says. That basis of design then informs a space plan that functions and meets the clients’ processes. “Once the preliminary space plan is completed and approved, we move to the design development (phase three), where we look at the space three-dimensionally,” he says. “We also start reviewing finishes and furniture, providing many samples for clients to assist us in the design process. We work closely with our clients and strive to help them help

us in creating the finish palette that relates to their goals and expresses their brand and culture.” After completing the construction documents and reviewing with the client, the drawings then are sent to a general contractor to obtain final pricing and obtain permits. Once the pricing is approved by the client and the permits are in-hand, construction begins. Nehring’s eye for design helps clients express their company cultures in their spaces through textures, materials and overall planning. One such project in the works involves Rolling Lawns Farm, a more than 100-year-old, fourth-generation dairy farm in Greenville, Illinois. Nehring’s firm is designing a café, ice cream shop and event space at the building where the farm is processing the milk for consumer use. The goal is to express the farm’s dairy history and story, so visitors can taste the farm’s products right where they’re made. “This is table-to-farm,” Nehring says. “The building was repurposed from a general retail store. It incorporates the dairy processing plant and will house the event space along with the retail and café spaces. The goal is to express the rich heritage of this Illinois farm and the family that has maintained and grown this fourth-generation farm.” Another recent project, a residential building, involves a seventh-floor modern-amenity space complete with various gathering areas, a fitness center and a balcony patio. With the building’s young professional tenants in mind, the firm aimed to create a new concept that is different from other building amenity spaces nearby that is comfortable, tech-smart and flexible. The project’s highlights include a bar area, a fireplace and audiovisual technology, as well as an acoustical covered Mondrian-inspired felt wall with white oak trim completed by Pagedale-based Lancia Brothers Woodworking and a preserved moss wall made up of moss created by Ambius St. Louis. “It was all about allowing more natural light to filter to the interior core, so we used minimal walls and furniture as a way to separate space,” Nehring says, adding that the space features signature womb chairs and tables from famed architect Eero Saarinen, whose iconic designs include the Gateway Arch. “We were trying to get more of that creative vibe and create a place where people who want to do business in a different manner could work. In lieu of sitting around a conference table or being tethered to desktops, we are breaking tradition by creating a fluid space where work follows the users.” As Nehring Design looks to its future, the firm is applying its forward-thinking design smarts to its own office expansion, at 8747 Big Bend Blvd., once again in collaboration with Lancia Brothers Woodworking. The office will feature modern design while maintaining its 1950s nostalgia, open spaces for client meetings and entertainment – all to inspire its staff members, who work to do just that for employees across the area each day. Nehring Design, 8707 Big Bend Blvd., Webster Groves, 314-925-0860, nehringdesign.com

Our style is reflected by the ideology of what our clients are looking to achieve in their spaces, and many clients come to us to incorporate a modern approach and infuse their brand within the architecture of their space. - ALAN NehriNg LadueNews.com | august 30, 2019

MILLION-DOLLAR MARKET: Feature Story

THE RYAN TRADITION

A History of

T

radition is more than just a part of this dynamic real estate team’s name. For The Ryan Tradition, it signifies the legacy John Ryan has built within the local luxury real estate market. He has developed a reputation as the leading expert on high-end properties, with a unique understanding of how the market can affect your real estate goals. “The Ryan Tradition has been a leader in the St. Louis Luxury market for more than 50 years,” Ryan details. “We have maintained that position based on two generations of unparalleled knowledge of the market and an unmatched level of service for our clients, both buyers and sellers.” Regarding the current local market status, Ryan believes that now is the best time to make your move on that property you’ve been eyeing. “Inventory is still very tight,” he explains, also noting that “if you are thinking of making a change, this may be the right time to sell your current home.”

Excellence

The Ryan Tradition’s latest listing features all the desirable elements for a home upgrade. Located in Old Town Clayton, the stylish residence sits around the corner from restaurants and boutiques, making life there all the easier to envision. “120 Linden Avenue is a three-year-old custom home, with exceptional details and finishes,” Ryan describes. “Additionally, it is built on one of the few 100-foot lots in the highly desirable Old Town. This allows for a unique design experience, with a mainfloor master bedroom, an inground pool and yard, plus four-car garage spaces [that are] on grade with the house.” Obsess over the abode’s decadent details, like the main-floor master suite, with its 13-foot coffered ceiling or the soaking tub and impressive marble-andglass shower. The gourmet chef’s kitchen showcases Shaker-style custom cabinetry and white quartzite counters beside premium appliances.

Luxuriate in the outdoor living room next to the fireplace, or on the covered front porch, where you can bid guests adieu as they drive away from the courtyard, lit by gas lanterns. Warm weather is best spent in the fabulous pool, with powder and changing rooms an added convenience in the pool house. These are the type of properties best uncovered by an agent, assures Ryan. “There is a tremendous amount of information available to buyers and sellers today, especially from online sources,” he explains. “The actual market, [notably] at the luxury level, is still provincial, with no two properties exactly the same. Work with a real estate agent who is experienced and knows the intimate details of your market. These [are assets that] cannot be measured by an algorithm.” John Ryan, The Ryan Tradition, Coldwell Banker Gundaker, 9651 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-941-0572 (direct), 314-993-8000 (office), theryantradition.com

Styling at Saks S‌ aks Fifth Avenue at Plaza Frontenac is buzzing with excitement! Not only is it welcoming its first female general manager, Salome Christian, to the team, but also its lineup of events is certainly of note. Ladue News caught up with Saks Fifth Avenue area marketing manager Ashley Obradovits about welcoming designers like Akris Punto, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Paula Crevoshay and more to the metro area. Saks St. Louis recently released its fall event lineup. Can you elaborate on what we will see? We are very excited for the fall season at Saks St. Louis! We will have 16 jewelry trunk shows, not to mention nine of them will be hosted by the designer themselves. We will have almost 20 other events throughout the store, something for everyone! What inspired Saks to bring so many designers to St. Louis? At Saks Fifth Avenue, we are all about creating a memorable experience, [and] there is nothing more memorable than meeting the designer behind the piece you are interested in! You’ll learn about the designer’s inspiration for the collection and even have a chance to personalize it and make it your own. Our store has quite the track record for success with these designers, and now they never want to miss a season without stopping in St. Louis! Is there one event in particular you are most excited for? Why? We are hosting a Ralph Lauren trunk show on Sept.

25 for the first time in years. Ralph Lauren is such an iconic brand, and his style appeals to everyone. It really is such a treat and opportunity to be able to partner with them. What can attendees expect to see and experience at such events? A trunk show is your opportunity to see the entire collection from the designer and, specifically, pieces that were chosen by our buyers. Most stores only get a few pieces here and there. You will get one-on-one time with the brand representative or the designer themselves. What makes Saks Fifth Avenue stand out from other retailers?

We take pride in the fact that our buyers really listen to our consumers and style advisors in the store. If we feel that there is a designer we know would work great in our market, they will curate a package just for us to test out. We take risks! Anything new and noteworthy you’d like to share? We love giving back to our local community and charities. This fall, we are partnering with the Glennon Card – proceeds benefit SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital – and donating 10 percent of sales from Oct. 25 to 27. We are also hosting our fall car show with Cars & Coffee on Saturday, Oct. 26. Fun weekend in the store!

THE ALZHEIMER’S

GRAIL

By Emily Adams Washington University School of Medicine researchers might have found what was previously considered to be the holy grail of Alzheimer’s disease research. A recent study by the school’s Bateman Lab confirms that, when combined with age and genetic risk factors, a new blood test is highly accurate in identifying Alzheimer’s before symptoms arise. First author Dr. Suzanne Schindler explains what this discovery means for the future of treatment and medication. How does this blood test identify Alzheimer’s disease? People start developing the brain changes of Alzheimer’s disease about 20 years before the onset of symptoms. This blood test is looking for these brain changes. If you have amyloid plaques [protein clumps that destroy connections between nerve cells] in your brain, some of the amyloid that would normally get into your blood does not – it stays in your brain – so the blood test measures that ratio that is associated with whether you have these amyloid plaques in your brain or not. Why are the findings of this study so significant compared to other research? There have been a lot of drug trials of Alzheimer’s disease that have failed, and we think they failed because we treated the disease too late. It’s kind of like starting someone on a blood pressure medicine after they’ve had three heart attacks. The problem is that currently, the way they’re doing this is that they do an amyloid PET [positron emission tomography] scan, and it works very well, but it’s very expensive and

availability is pretty limited. For probably a decade, a blood test for Alzheimer’s disease was referred to somewhat jokingly as the holy grail of Alzheimer’s disease because we knew that it would help our ability to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, and it would speed up the progress of finding a drug for Alzheimer’s disease. There used to be a big gap in performance between blood tests, cerebral spinal taps and amyloid PET [scans], but now that gap is pretty narrow. How will this test change clinical approaches to treating Alzheimer’s patients? In the next couple of years, I primarily see this being helpful in speeding up the development of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. Also, for example, right now I probably do cerebral spinal fluid analysis on maybe 5 to 10 percent of my patients. But I think if there were a blood test available, I might do it on 80 percent of my patients, just because the risk-benefit equation is very different when you have a blood test versus a spinal tap. When will this test be made available in doctors’ offices? My guess is three to five years, but there’s a company founded by Dr. Randall Bateman and Dr. David Holtzman at Wash U, who are very aggressively developing this for commercialization, and they’ve gotten a Breakthrough Device designation by the FDA to speed up the process.

What is the next step for you in your research? One thing that we’re interested in doing is just repeating this with not just hundreds but thousands of people. There’s still a lot of research to be done.

Introducing New Champs

By Warren Mayes

‌HOISINGTON, KIKUCHI TRIUMPH The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association recently crowned two area players in its junior amateur championships: Braden Hoisington and Momo Kikuchi. Hoisington had two days to remember at Belleville’s St. Clair Country Club, when the Fort Zumwalt West junior won the boys’ tournament. “This was a last-minute tournament [for me] so I didn’t have many expectations,” Hoisington says. “I was just going to show up and play my best.” And he did. Hoisington hoisted the James M. Holtgrieve Trophy after rounds of 66 and 67 for an 11-under 133. His impressive play included a bogey-free second round. After the opening round, Hoisington was tied with Kolten Bauer but went out in 32 in the second to separate himself from the field. That got him to 10 under and a 7-shot lead with nine holes left. He added a birdie on the Par 5 14th to finish at the 11-under total. In the girls’ championship, Kikuchi, of Pattonville High School, held her first day lead to solidly have her name added to the Barbara A. Berkmeyer Trophy. She finished with rounds of 80-82 for an 18-over 162. Briana McMinn, an O’Fallon High product, finished second. McMinn (with her sister Alyssa, the 2018 girls’ junior amateur champ, on the bag) had rounds of 8483, to finish five strokes behind Kikuchi. In the boys’ 14-15 age division, meanwhile, Kal Kolar came away with the title. Kolar, who played in the final group in the second round after opening with a 2-under round of 70, finished with 77 in Round 2 to beat Cy Norman by two shots. Finally, in the age 12-13 divisions, the McLaughlin family has new hardware to display: Avery McLaughlin won the girls’ division with bookend 77s over two days, while Luke McLaughlin took runner-up honors on the boys’ side.

Team Missouri at the Junior Girls’ Four-State Championship.

BIERMANN PLAYS WELL IN BIG EVENTS Brooke Biermann of Wildwood has had a summer to remember. Biermann, a junior at Lafayette, nabbed medalist honors in the 93rd Women’s Western Junior and reached the semifinals, where she lost in 20 holes to Gabriella Gilrowski of Westfield, Indiana. The loss ended Biermann’s tournament. She finished in a tie for 18th place in the 44th annual Junior Girls PGA Championship at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Connecticut.

THOMAS NAMED HEAD COACH Scott Thomas has been promoted to head coach for both the Maryville Saints men’s and women’s golf teams. Thomas has served as assistant coach for both programs since 2015 and succeeds Glenn Paulus, who retired from full-time duty at the university but remains with the teams as assistant coach. Thomas helped lead the men’s team to three straight NCAA tournaments and the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference championship.

As an amateur player, he had a successful career at the local, state and national levels. More specifically, Thomas won the Missouri Amateur, Missouri MidAmateur, Missouri Senior Amateur, St. Louis District Men’s and Senior Championship, and Metropolitan Senior Amateur. He also was named the 1992 St. Louis Post-Dispatch Amateur Player of the Year and the 2008 MAGA Senior Player of the Year. Otherwise, Thomas has competed in six R&A Amateur Championships and 12 USGA Championships. In 2017, he qualified for the USGA Senior Amateur held at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis. A Certified Mental Game Coaching Professional, Thomas chairs the MAGA Advisory Committee. Earlier

in life, he played four seasons for the St. Cloud State University Huskies men’s golf team in St. Cloud, Minneapolis, the last two as team captain.

MISSOURI PLACES FOURTH In the 51st Junior Girls’ Four-State Championship, Missouri, the defending champ, finished last this year with 2 points. Coaching team Missouri was Lafayette girls golf coach Kat Clark. Nebraska won with 11.5 points, followed by Iowa with 5.5 points and Kansas with 5 points. The annual event took place at ArborLinks in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

urango Cigar Lounge represents the culmination of years of slow, steady evolution. The membership-based establishment numbers among the many themed setups at Brennan’s, a hip bar in St. Louis’s Central West End neighborhood. Most important to Durango’s success has been that, despite changes through the years, the neighborhood vibe that brought people there in the first place remains. “It’s sort of been like this organic ‘this-then-that’ situation – that’s why I like working here,” says Zach Gzehoviak, a marketing director at Brennan’s who operates more like a “Swiss Army manager,” dabbling in everything from sales and marketing to booking events and day-to-day operations. “How this place has expanded into these different little offerings, it’s kind of fun to see it grow over all these years.” Brennan’s debuted in 2003 as a wine and cigar shop. A local following soon took root, which inspired the addition of a basement speakeasy that specialized in cigars and scotch – a combo that never goes out of style. Eventually, around 2009 or 2010, the establishment migrated upstairs, and with the change in scenery, the owners added a membership component to help beat crowds and offer a unique atmosphere for willing participants. “It’s a good amount of space for a cigar lounge, but what separates it is the vibe and aesthetic,” says Gzehoviak. “We have a big vinyl selection; members are allowed to bring their own records and store them. We have a fun time with that.” Music aside, the main attraction to Durango Cigar Lounge obviously remains cigars. The St. Louis-based Durango Cigars itself produces a well-known brand of hand-rolled pipe tobacco cigars and sponsors the club – but visitors can find all of their favorites in the lounge’s stable of products. “We carry a nice selection of all the classic, top-selling cigar brands, in addition to some aged products that we age here with different whiskey herbs,” says Gzehoviak, who expertly rattles off a list of varieties, including Romeo y Julieta, Arturo Fuente and Montecristo. “And while Cuban cigars are good, there are plenty of cigars from other countries like the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua that are, in my opinion, just as good.” Annual membership involves three different levels. The first level, priced at $1,500, allows one guest per member and comes with $750 in credit, which can be used for food, drinks, cigars, events and other amenities in the lounge. The second level costs twice as much as the first, but members receive twice the amount in credit and are permitted up to three guests (and sometimes more, with advance notice). And the third is a corporate membership in which companies purchase access to the lounge, though company representatives’ names on the account are required and at least one of these representatives from the company must be present for all visits and authorize uses of house account credit.

Other guest privileges demonstrate the lounge’s passion for its namesake – and how far attention to detail can go. “We have two different areas where we store humidors, which we provide for members, but they can bring their own if they like,” says Gzehoviak. “We check all of our members’ boxes to make sure that they maintain optimal temperature and humidity levels.” Members can also indulge in full-service food and cocktail offerings. Built into one of its walls, Durango sports a European-style pouring system that dispenses liquor in a premeasured amount. The setup doubles as debonair decoration – like something you’d find in a room hidden behind a bookcase in someone’s study – showing off an excellent selection of scotch and whiskey bottles, all suspended upside down. Gzehoviak admits that people may have preconceived notions about cigar lounges being cheesy, but every detail at Durango, from the ambiance to the offerings, proves the exact opposite. What it’s all about is being able to enjoy yourself in a space dedicated exactly to that. “It’s a social thing that doesn’t need to be all the time, but it’s nice [to hang out] when you have a quality cigar,” Gzehoviak says. “We want to offer a premium experience, but it has a casual atmosphere – you can come in jeans and a T-shirt. You’re paying the premium upfront, but we hope that you get the value back.” Evolution clearly remains the key to success at Brennan’s. With Durango Cigar Lounge thriving, the hot spot makes a fitting (if familiar) metaphor for the city and the area alike. “It’s really grown over the years,” says Gzehoviak. “The area has changed a lot, and [Brennan’s] has grown with the neighborhood. It’s kind of cliché, but it has kind of become a ‘where everyone knows your name’ spot.” Durango Cigar Lounge at Brennan’s, 4659 Maryland Ave., St. Louis, 314-497-4449, durangocigars.com

“St. Louis is a big city, and there are lots of Asian restaurants,” Jang says. “However, there is a lack of Korean food compared to other cities. So we decided to serve fresh and quality Korean food with inexpensive prices for the neighborhood.” BoB.Q fills the 900-square-foot space previously occupied by Shawarma King, with around 16 seats available in the dining area. The walls received a fresh coat of black paint, embellished by Kim’s whimsical drawings in gold and silver. According to Jang, his wife has a background in art, and with the interior design, she hoped to make the dining room feel youthful and modern. To contribute to the relaxed vibe, Korean pop

music videos play on a TV mounted over the counter. From the menu, guests can choose from four different rice bowl options: beef bulgogi, spicy chicken or pork, and organic tofu with house-made Korean tofu sauce. A half-and-half bowl, also available, features two proteins of the diner’s choice. Each protein is marinated for more than 24 hours in a special Korean house-made barbecue sauce from a longtime family recipe that uses fruits rather than sugar to provide sweetness. The proteins are grilled with onions and peppers and served atop soft Korean-style white rice with fresh lettuce and garnishes of green onion and sesame

oB.Q, a fast-casual Korean barbecue eatery, opened in June in University City, offering a simple menu of rice bowls with the diner’s choice of flavorful, marinated and grilled proteins. “BoB means ‘rice’ in Korean, so when you add the ‘Q,’ it becomes rice with Korean barbecue,” says co-owner Victor Jang, explaining the restaurant’s name. Jang co-owns BoB.Q with his wife, Moon Kim. The couple also owns and operates Wudon, a popular fullservice Korean barbecue restaurant in Creve Coeur. With BoB.Q, Jang hopes to bring quick, affordable Korean fare to the area.

seeds. Additional options include extra protein and extra rice, as well as sides of authentic house-made kimchi. Dumplings and miso soup are also available. Still, regardless of which option they ultimately choose, visitors should give BoB.Q a try before catching Antigone from SATE, also known at the Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble. “We are offering high-quality Korean barbecue,” Jang says. “It comes fast and fresh.”

‌Story:  Two local theater companies (Equally Represented Arts and Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble) are collaborating on a modern interpretation of Sophocles’ classic Greek tragedy Antigone. Seven different women portray the title character from a fresh perspective that the companies note “explores themes of fidelity, citizenship, civil disobedience, and the struggles and consequences the characters within the world of the play encounter as a result of their choices.” In Sophocles’ original, Antigone is sentenced to death by her uncle, King Creon, after she disobeys his edict that the body of her dead brother Polynices remain unburied on the battlefield, to be prey for carrion and the object of public shame. Polynices and his brother Eteocles had fought on opposite sides in the Theban civil war, killing each other as they battled. Afterward, the newly crowned Creon declared that Eteocles be honored in death but that Polynices be scorned. Antigone implores her sister, Ismene, to help bury their reviled brother, but Ismene timidly refuses. When Creon learns what Antigone has done, he confronts her, only to hear her say that he is immoral and that, by burying Polynices, she has chosen to obey divine law instead of his wrongheaded decree. Creon then attempts to bury Antigone alive in a cave, but in the process angers his own son, Haemon, her fiancé. When the blind prophet Tiresias warns Creon that he must appease the gods, whom the king’s actions have displeased, by freeing Antigone, he waits too long before reluctantly agreeing to do so. Antigone subsequently hangs herself, leading to the suicides of both Haemon and Creon’s wife, Eurydice. Highlights:  Director Lucy Cashion and her cast offer a spirited variation on the tragedy that opens it to contemporary analysis and understanding. Other Info:  This version of Antigone, presented as part of SATE’s Season of Ritual, has been in the works for the last few years. The two companies note in their joint news release: “In 2017, Prison Performing Arts (PPA) began a collaboration with Saint Louis University Department of Fine and Performing Arts. “Lucy Cashion, Assistant Professor of Theatre (and ERA Artistic Director) and PPA Director of Youth Programs (and SATE Artistic Director) Rachel Tibbetts taught weekly poetry, playwriting and development workshops with PPA participants at Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia, MO.” The release continues: “The group studied, explored and wrote about the ancient Greek Princess Antigone. Antigone’s story of fighting civic law to obey divine law became famous in the classical Greek tragedy, Antigone, which premiered in Athens in

By Mark Bretz

441 B.C. Since then, scholars, poets and playwrights have written their own translations, adaptations and critiques of the Antigone story, each from a different point of view. “The continuation of this tradition resulted in a new version of Antigone, which was performed in Oct. 2017 by SLU theater majors in St. Louis and then with a performance by PPA participants at WERDCC in March 2018. The collaboration now continues with this ERA/SATE co-production in St. Louis.” This first professional production of the collaboration features Miranda Jagels Félix and Victoria Thomas, both of whom performed in the SLU production, as well as Laura Hulsey, who was a member of the WERDCC version. Hulsey, who was released from WERDCC in 2018, makes a most impressive professional acting debut in this latest incarnation of Antigone. Each of those three performers portrays Antigone in the first half of this stylishly and cleverly directed 90-minute, one-act effort. Also filling the title role are Alicen Moser, Taleesha Caturah, Ellie Schwetye and Natasha Toro. All seven performers take on other assignments, too, when this version of Antigone more or less follows the original story in its second half. Moser portrays Creon; Thomas, Ismene; Hulsey, Haemon; Caturah, Tiresias; Schwetye, Cerberus, the threeheaded dog that guarded the Greek infernal realm; Toro, Eurydice; and Jagels Félix alone, Antigone. Cashion’s prior excursions into the classics, including Oedipus Rex, Doctor Faustus and Macbeth, have always been highly imaginative and more than a touch confusing to at least one audience member. This intriguing Antigone fits that mold.

Venues large and small throughout the metro area team to host a mind-boggling autumnal celebration of fiber artistry.

T

he astonishing über-event Innovations in Textiles STL 2019, colloquially known as IT19, sprawls across four pages of the calendar, from August to November, and, according to its website, seeks “to investigate the state of contemporary textile arts” by presenting “innovative exhibitions that explore fiber art, textiles and fashion created by local, regional, national and international artists.” Anne Murphy, who became IT19’s program coordinator in May, veritably gushes about it. “Has there ever been a collaborative effort in St. Louis – even the Midwest – where over 45 partnering groups and venues have joined together to shine the light on a particular kind of art?” she asks rhetorically. “There’s something to intrigue everyone this fall!” Indeed. The IT19 website mentions “receptions, open houses, workshops, lectures, gallery talks, studio tours, a bus tour and other community programs” – a figurative tapestry of sufficiently complex warp and weft as to permit only a simple glimpse here. For details, interested readers should consult IT19’s quite robust website. In the meantime, a simple listing for only next Friday should suffice

to suggest the scope and complexity of IT19. On just that day, Sept. 6, six venues in the immediate vicinity alone are opening eight exhibitions related to the celebration: • The Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood, “Sun Smith-Fôret New Work in Amuletic Sculpture,” “Navigating Borders” and “Solar Temple.” • The Soulard Art Gallery in that treasured boho St. Louis neighborhood, “Material World.” • The Parish Gallery in the CWE’s Trinity Episcopal Church, “Not My Usual Go To!” • The Messing Gallery at Ladue’s Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, “Anonymous Women.” • The Gallery at the University City Public Library, “Timeless Fibers: Tradition and Beyond.” • Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in St. Louis’ Covenant BluGrand Center neighborhood, “Stephanie Syujco: Rogue States.” According to the IT19 website, the areawide celebration of fiber artistry dates from 1995, when three institutions and a gallery here

teamed to create a showcase for such art and the artists who create it. After a biennial start, it transitioned, after 2015, to a quadrennial schedule, with the founding four participating venues now topping 40. “The fiber arts are tactile, textured, and invite experimentation and interpretation,” Murphy continues. “While textile arts have been practiced globally for millennia, it’s interesting to see the unexpected way that contemporary fiber artists interpret the materials. In their hands, fabric, yarn, fibers and other materials are stitched, woven, knotted, knitted and combined in ways to go beyond the literal meaning and utility. “It’s about concept. Their works communicate emotions or confront issues or showcase the aesthetic. Seeing an exhibit of contemporary fiber art is an adventure. You see the unexpected.” Not unexpectedly, the logistics of planning a celebration as grand as IT19 involved a goodly number of individuals and institutions alike. “It takes many hands, brilliant minds and art-savvy people to pull together such a collaborative effort with so many partners,” Murphy says. “The planning team is comprised of art leaders and educators from art organizations, galleries, museums and institutions throughout St. Louis County, St. Louis, St. Charles and Columbia, as well as the Metro East and Mount Vernon. “It’s inspiring to work with a team of such knowledgeable and experienced people, knowing that each one is committed to presenting a wonderful experience in contemporary fiber art for the community.” Presenting that experience, Murphy adds, took considerable time. “Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff, gallery director at Art Saint Louis, brought us together about two years ago to start the conversation rolling about IT19 … ,” she says. “Many of us have worked together through the years in the arts. We were eager to come together to plan IT19. We were especially excited because Surface Design Association, an international fiber art organization, had reached out to us and wanted to hold their biennial conference, scheduled for Oct. 3 to 6, in St. Louis during the time when IT19 was happening. We wanted to wow them! “In May, Robin passed the torch to me to continue the coordination efforts. It’s definitely a group effort – we’ve been meeting regularly, forming committees and planning exhibits, gallery events and workshops. And because of the excitement and energy, new collaborating partners have come onboard to present contemporary fiber art exhibits and more.” Otherwise, when asked to name a component or components of IT19 that she herself most anticipates, Murphy’s enthusiasm again goes into overdrive. “There’s so much to see and do this fall!” she says. “Our Innovations in Textiles partners have planned amazing exhibits, artist talks, workshops and other happenings.” Thereafter, without duplicating any IT19 component already mentioned, Murphy confesses her excitement for exhibitions at the Jacoby Arts Center in downtown Alton, Horsley Arts in the CWE, Bluebird Park in Ellisville, The Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries in Covenant Blu-Grand Center and the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, as well as a gallery-hopping bus tour involving five such vehicles. All things considered, IT19 sounds like a stupendous celebration deriving from something as simple as thread.
