CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE

SOCIETY I WRITE THIS ON THE DAY THAT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS are gathering on the National Mall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have A Dream speech—arguably one of the most important speeches from one of the greatest orators of the 20th century. Dr. King would deliver a speech five years later that was just as impactful, if not foreboding: His 1968 I’ve Been to the Mountaintop speech in Memphis. In it, Dr. King declares what “this whole thing is about…we are determined to be men. We are determined to be people.” The following day, as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Dr. King was forever silenced. The National Civil Rights Museum now stands on the spot where this great man fell. It’s been years since I visited, but I still recall the surge of emotions I experienced as the tour reached its final stop: a step inside Room 306, shown as it was on that fateful day, as Mahalia Jackson’s voice swells, Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

FABULOUS POOLS & GARDENS We may have to say goodbye to white attire, but Labor Day weekend does provide one last reason to celebrate outdoors before the start of autumn. If your backyard leaves something to be desired, engulf yourself in these beautiful gardens and breathtaking pools before bringing in the professionals. By this time next year, you could have the party-ready oasis.

FALL ARTS CALENDAR From Tony Award-winning musicals and Grammy Award-winning performers to classic and contemporary art, take a first glimpse into St. Louis’ fall entertainment season.

LN CHIC The mood for fall is one of ease and comfort. Flowing skirts, baggy pants, roomy sweaters...clothing that makes you feel cozy, yet polished. Paired with layers of necklaces, stacks of bracelets and handfuls of rings, this look is a bit Bohemian, a tad romantic and nothing short of chic.

Meet Our Staff Julia Christensen Fascinating exhibits are opening in St. Louis this October. Between traveling multimedia experience The 1968 Exhibit to the debut of A Queen Within, the line between life and art is sure to be blurred—in the most breathtaking of ways.

Brittany Nay I’m a big fan of outdoor festivals. Whether it’s enjoying food, art or live music, Taste of St. Louis, Saint Louis Art Fair and Loufest always are on my fall calendar.

Lisa Watson I have never been to the St. Louis Symphony’s concert in Forest Park, and it is absolutely on my list for this year! What could be better than a night under the stars listening to a world-class performance? I also can’t wait to see another great show at The Rep. Delicious

GOLF TOURNAMENT

R

BY COLLEEN DOHERTY

ANKEN JORDAN RECENTLY HELD its ninth annual Golf Tournament at Norwood Hills Country Club. Many golfers played the links before enjoying cocktails and live and silent auctions, as well as a lovely dinner. Through the event, Ranken Jordan raised more than $100,000 to help kids and families make the journey from the hospital to home successfully. Sam Ward, a former patient and aspiring golfer, was the guest of honor and traveled with his family from Memphis, Tenn., to share his story of success. Board chairman Steve Cortopassi and president and CEO Laureen Tanner also were in attendance.

F MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY ISN’T TOP-OFmind when you’re thinking about St. Louis’ great universities, you might want to re-think that list, says university president Mark Lombardi. “St. Louis deserves another great university; and the good news is, they’ve got one—it’s Maryville University.” And you don’t have to take his word for it, either—he’s backed by U.S. News & World Report, which recently named the university the No. 1 ‘Overperforming University’ in the country. “They took a look at the data of what universities are doing in terms of graduation rate, retention, career placement, and other important results that universities track, and looked at that vis-à-vis

reputation,” Lombardi notes. Reputation typically lags behind performance, a fact that the report took into account. “It was a national, external validation in terms of all the good work we’ve been doing for our students,” he says. U.S. News & World Report was not the only national entity to recognize the university for its performance during the 2012-2013 school year. Forbes Magazine also named Maryville to its ‘Best Colleges’ list for the second straight year, while the NCAA honored it with the Division II President’s Award. That prestigious title was given in response to its student-athlete graduation rate—Maryville was the only Division II school in the country to graduate 100 percent of its student-athletes in four years. Lombardi attributes the unusual achievement to a great coaching staff, peer mentors and the athletes themselves. “We recruit student-athletes who are well-rounded and have the discipline to excel on the fields and courts, and also carry that into the classroom. We’re very proud of them.” G.I. Jobs also recognized the university for the Continued on page 69

You’ve spent a warm and sunny day relaxing at the pool. The cool water is refreshing—while you’re swimming. But when you get out, your hair is sticky and you reek of chlorine. That’s the experience that many people accept as the norm. But that doesn’t have to be the case, says Wayne George, co-owner of Westport Pools. His company recently started installing sphagnum moss systems as a way to keep clients’ pools clean and clear, while maintaining lower levels of harsh chemicals like chlorine. The natural cleaning solution has been spreading across the Northeast, and has just made its way to St. Louis, he says. “Sphagnum is a plant that grows in New Zealand and Northern Canada,” George says. “When it grows in the ponds, it is crystal clear. The sphagnum moss has a natural defense against algae, because if the algae were to grow, it would overrun and kill it.” To translate this natural defense to swimming pools, the moss is harvested, dried, cleaned and packaged in tea bag-like pouches that can be dropped in a chamber attached to the pool’s circulation system. “All the water in the pool comes in

contact with the moss, and the moss takes out all those nasty things,” George says. He explains this ‘inhibition of organic matter,’ as it’s technically known: “If you could put pool water under a microscope, you’d see a layer of this body oil and perspiration floating on top, and that is where the bacteria reside. Normally, we raise the chlorine levels to keep the pool clean. But the moss gets rid of all of that film, leaving the bacteria naked and exposed, so that it takes less chlorine.” Westport Pools has installed the moss in both residential and commercial pools, with positive results. “On the residential side, I have a gentleman who was going through three or four chlorine tablets a day. Now, it’s not even one a day, and his pool is as clear as I’ve ever seen.” That often

translates into lower maintenance costs, but also a more pleasant swimming experience for families and their friends. “We have a guy who fixes leaks under water all day, so he’s underwater the whole summer. I asked him, Jump in that pool and tell me what you think. He did, and when he got out he said, I don’t believe it, I feel like I just got out of the shower. It doesn’t smell like salt or chlorine, and it’s a much nicer feel to the water.” With experience building and maintaining both residential and commercial pools throughout the region since 1967, Westport Pools is proud to be the first company to bring this technology to St. Louis, George notes. “We’re flattered that we were chosen to introduce this product. It’s a testament to the quality of the work that we perform.”

Fabulous Pools and Gardens

In Living Color

By Julia Christensen

We may have to say goodbye to white attire, but Labor Day weekend does provide one last reason to celebrate outdoors before the start of autumn. If your backyard leaves something to be desired, engulf yourself in these beautiful gardens and breathtaking pools before bringing in the professionals. By this time next year, you could have the party-ready oasis.

Danny Mee, Frisella Nursery • Stone staircase. “The natural stone steps lead to the flagstone patio,” Mee explains. “The whole point was to tie into the woodland setting.” Going in the opposite direction, the stairs take the homeowners across a small bridge and down to the additional patio. • Four-season space. “What we try to do with all designs is play with color

30

August 30, 2013    {LadueNews.com}

and texture to have a variety of plant material,” Mee says. “You want the landscape to be a design for all seasons, where there is always something growing.” • Constant color. Coreopsis adds a bright yellow color, while the hinoki cypress brings weight to the garden even during the winter when the perennials die. The varying shades all complement the home’s exterior.

Bob Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery • Sloping beauty. “The backyard is a steep slope area that is relatively unusable as any family activity area, so it was very practical for a natural garden,” explains Graeler. The finished look is manicured, yet clearly at home in its wooded habitat. • Stepping stones. Running through the backyard are natural slab, black hills rustic steps. Surrounding the stairs are walls made of weathered sandstone in similar hues. • One with nature. The landscaping blends nicely into the surrounding area, Graeler notes. “The homeowners were very interested in maintaining the natural feel.”

Richard Poynter, Poynter Landscape Architecture • Lovely louver. “A louvered-roof pergola is about having dry space, sunlight and shade, and still having the sky as your ceiling,” Poynter says. “You can see the sky right through it, but the louvers are set up where you stay dry underneath.” • Rustic touches. “This site was a little rustic, so we used a more rustic stone and rustic masonry technique,” he says, of the stonework around the pergola and in front of the pool. • Fabulous fountain. The wier directly underneath the pergola recycles the pool water and provides an enjoyable sound, Poynter says. “The volume of water that comes out of there can be varied; you have control over whether it dribbles or pours out as a sheet, as it is here.”

John Jacobsen, Liquid Assets • Superb stone. Natural elements—as seen on a the tumbled limestone steps, coping and tanning ledge, as well as the Missouri fieldstone boulder—help to unite the pool with the surrounding area. • Room to lounge. The tanning ledge provides more than a comfortable place for adults to cool off. “If you have younger kids, it’s an easy way to transition into the pool—it’s usually between 6 to 12 inches of water,” Johnson says. • Fun for all. For family fun, a basketball hoop and volleyball net can be slipped into place near the pool. Because they are anchored into the pool deck, they are sturdy—but still removable for adult get-togethers.

End-of-Summer Pool Maintenance

Closing Time By Julia Christensen

Y

ou ’ v e e n joy e d you r backyard oasis all summer long—but with the end of the swimming season a mere breaststroke away, what should you do to make sure that pool is just as perfect next spring? “Right now, it is important to keep the pool water quality good,” advises Liquid Assets owner John Jacobsen. Even if you aren’t using the pool as much now as you were last month, he says it is vitally important to keep the pH balance in line. Take a look around. Does anything need to be fixed? Jamie O’Brien, president and CEO of O’Brien Swimming Pool Services, says its time to schedule repairs or renovation. “If you do it in the end of summer or early fall, your pool will be up and ready to swim in as soon as you want to open it in the spring,” she says, noting that

problems left unsolved can grow worse throughout the winter. However, don’t rush to close the pool just yet. “September still can be quite warm, so you don’t want to miss out on the good part of the beginning of fall,” O’Brien reminds. She names late September as the ideal pool-closing time. “When we close the pool, we are trying to protect the pool plumbing, equipment and pool surface,” explains Westport Pools co-owner Wayne George. “The most expensive part of that is the underground piping.” When something happens to that underground piping, the repair is no quick fix. “There’s no way to fix an underground leak except to find it, dig it up and fix it,” warns George. This problem is caused by leftover water expansion. “To close a pool, you have to blow out all of the water from

Relax and

Enjoy...

the pool pipes, a n d i f yo u miss anything or don’t plug it right, the water in the pipes can freeze, and then crack,” O’Brien says. She estimates fixing this type of leak can cost between $10,000 to $15,000, while hiring a professional to close the pool costs only a few hundred dollars. For some pool owners, an additional winter problem can literally jump out at you. “Because of the hydrostatic pressure in the ground, if a fiberglass pool is drained too far, it can pop out of the ground,” O’Brien says. However, she estimates that only 20 percent of St. Louis pools are fiberglass, making it an irrelevant issue to many homeowners. When its time to put the cover

on the pool, make sure to note what kind you’re using, as George says he does not recommend mesh covers for residential outdoor pools. According to him, these covers let sunlight in, which allows photosynthesis to occur and algae to grow. “They do provide a great benefit: They look great and they’re safe,” George says. “But if you really have your heart set on using one of those in your backyard, wait as long as you can to close it and open it early.” George also recommends using an inexpensive cover underneath the mesh cover to enjoy the aesthetics and safety, while keeping the pool dark throughout the off season.

nyone can drive up in a truck and say they will fix your creaky stairs, leaky pipe or questionable electrical wiring. But hire the wrong handyman, and that new paint job in your family room might turn into more trouble—and a bigger mess—than you bargained for. We turned to local handymen Dave Dothage of Aspen Home Maintenance and Greg Filley of Kirkwood Handyman for recommendations on the best questions to ask before your job is started, to make sure it gets done right.

• Word-of-mouth is a very reliable way to find a trusted handyman, Dothage says, but make sure to get a reference from someone you trust. “You want reputable references, not just people who know them and are doing a favor,â€? he says. “I have clients who are business owners, and that’s where my references have a little more power and authority—if they give you a reference and you do bad work for somebody, it’s going to reflect badly on them and their business.â€? • Call the Better Business Bureau, suggests Filley. “See how long they’ve been in business, if they’re insured or not and if they’re a member of the BBB.â€? When the economy is bad, people who aren’t fully qualified might take on odd jobs as a way of making quick money, he warns. “When a lot of people are laid off, all of the sudden the paper will be loaded with handymen. First, find out how long they’ve been in business.â€? • Trust your gut. “Look out for these guys who come in and talk fast to overwhelm you,â€? Filley says. Get two or three bids and only work with someone you trust. “If someone presents themselves like a used car salesman, you don’t want to fool with them.â€? • Common sense matters. In your initial meetings with a handyman, they will put off plenty of signals about their professionalism, Dothage

notes. “If they don’t have the courtesy to call you back, or they miss an appointment and don’t call for a couple of days, that shows the importance of your business to them. They should treat you with respect as a customer.â€? When you meet the handyman for an estimate, is he organized and dressed in a presentable way? Does she track dirt in on your floor, or remove her shoes? These things might seem small, but they can tell you a lot. • Be wary of someone who asks for a big downpayment up-front. “I don’t take any money ahead of time,â€? Dothage says. “I always let my work do my talking, so even if I have to buy materials for the job, I buy the materials and then bill the client when I’m done with the whole thing. If someone doesn’t have the money to cover the cost of materials ahead of time, that’s a red flag— especially if it’s a small job.â€? • If extra costs are incurred, make sure there’s a good reason, Filley says. “If something goes haywire, I get the customer over there and show them what we’ve got to do. I’m not going to leave it unsafe, and I’ll tell them it’s going to cost X more. Sometimes I’ll even split the difference with them. But if you break something, you’ve got to tell them that you’ve broken it, and fix it at no cost.â€?

“If they don’t have the courtesy to call you back, or they miss an appointment and don’t call for a couple of days, that shows the importance of your business to them. They should treat you with respect as a customer. Dave Dothage, Aspen Home Maintenance

In the end, even though many of us have an instinct to trust people, it’s still important to do your homework before allowing someone into your home. As Dothage says, “If I get in a hurry and don’t worry about the red flags, I get in trouble every single time.

Emergency Stain Removal

he experience is so often the same: That glass of wine somehow slips out of your hand—or that missed slurp of coffee sloshes out of your mug. And, as if in slow motion, you can see the to-be-stain leaping toward the lightest, most stainable fabric within the bi-state area, settling between the fibers for all to see. And unless Murphy’s Law took the afternoon off, that stain is setting up base camp in the most visible part of something treasured, irreplaceable and expensive. So what do you do now? “The worst thing you can do is try to wipe it off,” says Ken Rimell, co-owner of Marquard’s Cleaners. Rimell, also known as ‘The Clothes Doctor,’ explains that a stain should be approached initially in two different ways. “If it’s a liquid stain, try to absorb and keep it within the perimeter of the stain. not wiping or spreading it—you’re containing it in the area.” If the stain is something solid, such as ketchup, Rimell says, “The best thing to do is to try to remove it with a soft-edged object like a spoon.” After lifting the stain, dab it repeatedly with a dry cloth. “You’d be amazed at how much you can get off of it.” If you feel the need to use water, get a cloth wet and “ring out all the water and do the same thing” as previously explained, says Rimell. “If it is washable, and you trust the care label and you’ve washed it before, you can follow the washing instructions— and do it as quickly as possible. In a matter of about 48-52 hours, the air causes oxidation; once you past that mark, it becomes a spot—and becomes more and more difficult to remove.” According to Rimell, it is important to note that seemingly harmless water can cause sincere problems while removing a stain. For example, he explains using water to remove a stain on a cotton garment may leave a ring around the stain when it dries; this is because of sizing, a glue-like product found between threads that gives body to the fabric. When the entire piece is submerged, such as in a washing machine, these little rings don’t appear; when only part of the fabric is wetted and left to dry, small stains can be made worse. Bryce Roderick, owner of Fiber-Seal of St. Louis,

“The worst thing you can do is try to wipe it off...if it’s a liquid stain, try to absorb and keep it within the perimeter of the stain. You’re not wiping or spreading it— you’re containing it in the area.” KEN RIMELL Co-owner of Marquard’s Cleaners

says the best way to respond to a stain is to make sure you know what you’re dealing with. “If you know what it is, then you can appropriately treat it.” He explains that, for example, if it’s red wine on wool carpet, you should take a white, dry cloth or paper towel and blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Then, again using an entirely white cloth, blot the wool carpet with water. If the stain is on a water-friendly fabric, and water doesn’t take the stain off, Roderick says it is time to call a professional. “If you start introducing other chemicals, you don’t know what damage you

may be doing to those fibers. For instance, if you have rayon fabric, and you get it wet, it will more than likely ruin that fabric. You really need to know what type of stain you’re dealing with and what kind of fabric it’s resting on.” While everyone might know their family’s secret at-home stain remover, home remedies can be a dangerous game, Rimell notes. “Some of the home remedies do work, but some don’t.” However, he explains that even functional remedies can cause serious problems when done improperly or tweaked slightly.

Nathan Lee Graham and other cast members rehearse for Cabaret.

THE REP

Staging Another Winning Season

Tell us about the opening show. We are doing Cabaret (Sept. 11-Oct. 6), a landmark musical with lots of famous songs, but it also tells a really personal story of people falling in love as the whole social fabric of Germany is shifting. It’s a spectacular and canny musical with great singing and dancing. Nathan Lee Graham, a St. Louis native and Webster Conservatory graduate (who also has appeared in the films Zoolander, Sweet Home Alabama and Hitch), will be exotic as the emcee. Describe your next show, Fly, based on a true story. Fly (Oct. 16–Nov. 10) is based on the Tuskegee Airmen’s story of overcoming issues of race and prejudice during World War II. What makes it unique is the ‘Tap Griot,’ a storyteller who tap dances in metaphors their fears and triumphs. It’s a muscular, powerhouse tap. Then, there also are video sequences. I don’t know that it’s really been done like this before anywhere. People really will be talking about this one.

Talk about your upcoming production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the longest-running play of all time. We have done two or three Agatha Christie plays before, but this will be our first time for The Mousetrap (Dec. 4–29). This one is set during a snowstorm, fitting for the holiday season. If people have read it or seen it, they often forget ‘whodunit,’ so it is great fun to try and figure out who is the killer. What else is on tap for this season? Opus (Jan. 8–Feb. 2) is a backstage look at a famous string quartet that is booked to play a special show at the White House. Other Desert Cities (Feb. 12-March 9) is the story of a family living the good life in Palm Springs, and the daughter has written a tell-all book about this family that puts it in some level of crisis. The politics are very current, and it’s a really unforgettable show. How will you cap off the season? We will close with Noises Off (March 19–April 13)—maybe the best modern farce written. It takes place onstage and backstage as a group of ragtag players is touring the English countryside with a play. You see what happens onstage; then, we also flip the set to see what’s happening backstage. It’s phenomenally funny. All the things that you think might happen backstage, happen. It’s truly laugh-out-loud funny. Talk about this year’s Studio Theatre series? First is Freud’s Last Session (Oct. 30–Nov. 17), a fun, fictional conversation about religion between Freud and C.S. Lewis. Continued on page 69

HEN IT’S LIVE, ANYTHING can happen, says The Repertory Theatre’s veteran artistic director Steven Woolf. This season, The Rep will showcase that exciting element of live theater during two productions that take audiences backstage. The new lineup also will feature a range of dramatic, comical and mysterious plays. LN recently spoke with Woolf for an inside look at the mainstage season and Studio Theatre series.

s a teenager, Peter Martin would get up an hourand-half before school to practice jazz, then go right back to his piano after the last bell rang. All that dedication certainly paid off, as he went on to attend Juilliard School of Music, earn multiple Grammy Awards and perform with his music idols throughout the world—even in the White House. Soon, the St. Louis native will return to his favorite place to play: The Sheldon. His Peter Martin Music Series has become a crowd favorite on the famed concert hall’s schedule, which also will include performances by Americana musicians Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn (Sept. 20), Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriters Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin (Oct. 4), and folk artist Rickie Lee Jones (Nov. 8) this year. LN recently caught up with Martin to talk about the series, his CD set for release in February and some highlights of his prolific career. Talk about your history with The Sheldon. I first played at The Sheldon many years ago when I was in the University City High School jazz band. I also saw some great concerts there growing up, like Wynton Marsalis. Then, when I came back to St. Louis in 2005, I had an interest in organizing a relief concert. I ended up playing with Wynton Marsalis and others, and I believe it’s still in the The Sheldon record books as the longest concert ever. What is it about The Sheldon that keeps bringing you back? After the relief concert, I wanted to do more shows of my own at The Sheldon. It’s always been Continued on page 52

fallartspreview A Ladue News Special Section Continued from page 51 one of my favorite places to play anywhere. It’s a great-sounding room. When the sound is so good, it’s so inspiring to a musician and gives you an energy from the room; so, you can be very creative. It has the feel of an intimate jazz club, but the sound of a great jazz hall. And the stage is small, so you feel the audience’s energy. Describe the shows in your series at The Sheldon this season. At the Blue Note Records Celebration featuring Peter Bernstein (Nov. 2), we will play some of my audience’s favorite music, with the foremost jazz guitarist of our generation, Peter Bernstein. I just did a recording with him, and it’s so effortless to play with him; so, I can only imagine what it will be like in the effortless acoustics of The Sheldon. And on March 30, I will perform with my group Newport Jazz Festival at 60, a nice cross-section of multi-generational jazz musicians. It’s an all-star lineup that has never worked together at the same time. We will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, which is the original jazz festival. Tell us about your upcoming CD. I’m in the middle of working on it. It will feature a lot of my original music as it was being developed, and is only now being recorded. I’m recording in a new studio called Esplanade in New Orleans. It’s an

old church in my old neighborhood, and it has a great sound and vibe. I’ll be excited to present the new CD on Feb. 7 during a CD Release Party at The Sheldon.

to a lot of jazz records from my dad, and we all concentrated on playing from that historical perspective.

What was your most memorable performance? My most memorable performance was when I played at the White House for President Obama—I’m a big fan. And then there were other jazz musicians I love who performed with me like Herbie Hancock. And President Obama, the First Lady and their kids, and Bill and Hillary Clinton were in the front row of this intimate space where they normally hold press conferences. I was super-nervous. I couldn’t believe it was happening. Who has been your favorite collaborator? I love working with (Grammy Award-winning jazz singer) Dianne Reeves. She is one my favorite vocalists of all time. It’s so much fun to work with her. She sounds so good, and it really makes me play my best. What work are you most proud of? I am really proud of the records that I’ve done. I also appeared in George Clooney’s 2005 film, Good Night, and Good Luck, and played on the soundtrack with Dianne Reeves. We recorded it as an old-school jazz record. I grew up listening

From being featured in films to producing music and playing live onstage, what are you most passionate about? I love performing—that’s my first love. What I do and we do as jazz musicians and creative artists is 90 percent improv, and we love to play for audiences who appreciate that. What we do is a little different from today’s (mainstream) bands. The audience knows the tunes, but the essence of what makes jazz what it is is that it is something to be enjoyed in the moment. And the world is coming to appreciate that kind of artistry more. Did you always envision yourself as a jazz musician? I went through a stage when I was young where I wanted to be a pro soccer player. But, I come from a family of musicians. And when I really started to get into jazz, I was thinking, I want to do this forever. So, I started playing gigs around St. Louis. Then, I started getting calls to play with great musicians like Freddie Washington, and I really learned a lot from that. I always practiced a lot, and I still do—I have a studio down in Grand Center. It’s not like you graduate from school and you’re done; it’s a lifelong endeavor.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers frequently issue warnings for patients with glaucoma or elevated eye pressure. This is because certain drugs can abruptly elevate intraocular pressure and trigger an attack of acute angle closure glaucoma, which is a potentially blinding medical emergency.

An emergent increase in intraocular pressure can be caused by certain medications. These drugs include: antihistamines, anti-parkinsonian medications, tricyclic antidepressants, nasal decongestants, appetite suppressants, bronchodilators, Botox®, dilating eye drops and sulfa-based medications.

There are two types of glaucoma, open angle glaucoma and acute angle closure glaucoma. In acute angle closure glaucoma, the fluid at the front of the eye cannot reach the drainage angle and leave the eye because the angle gets blocked by part of the iris. Patients with acute angle closure glaucoma can have a sudden increase in eye pressure that may result in severe eye pain, decreased vision and increased redness of the eye. They may also develop a headache and possibly experience nausea and vomiting. Such an attack may affect one eye or both eyes simultaneously. To avoid permanent vision loss, it is important to seek immediate medical attention if you have any of these symptoms. Prompt laser surgery can usually clear the blockage and protect your eyesight.

Medications containing steroids can cause an asymptomatic rise in eye pressure that may result in permanent vision loss. This adverse side effect typically occurs when steroids in any form (drops, creams, ointments or pills) are taken for more than two weeks. Steroids can also cause cataract development within the eye. Patients who are female, far-sighted, have a family history or have smaller than typical eyes may be at an increased risk of developing acute angle closure glaucoma. It is important to speak with your ophthalmologist if you may be at risk for this potentially blinding complication of medication.

his fall, Contemporary Art Museum will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its critically acclaimed building, designed by renowned architect Brad Cloepfil. The commemorative occasion will begin with new works by local and international artists in an exhibit entitled Place is the Space, as well as feature a talk by Cloepfil during its opening night, Sept. 6. LN recently spoke more about the anniversary festivities and special exhibitions with CAM chief curator Dominic Molon.

Tell us about your yearlong celebration. I am co-curating the exhibit, Place is the Space (Sept. 6-Dec. 29) with Brad Cloepfil, founding principal of Allied Works Architecture and architect of our CAM building. It will include new installations by five artists and one artist duo. We really wanted to make something that responded to the dynamic or condition of the space. Continued on page 54

fallartspreview A Ladue News Special Section Continued from page 52 Talk about the idea behind the exhibit, Place is the Space? Brad Cloepfil has a great deal of fondness for the CAM building. It is an important work for his career, and it has been very critically well-received and helped make his reputation. So to celebrate the anniversary of the building, he wanted to invite artists to respond to the structure he made. Describe some of the artwork that will be featured in Place is the Space? St. Louis native Jill Downen’s work is very much about how art and architecture resemble organic forms. For Place is the Space, her pieces called Beauty Mark will include filling in a long crack in CAM’s concrete floor with gold leaf and the reconstruction of a bulging wall sculpture that she created at the museum in 2004. Additionally, two artists—Carla Arocha and Stephane Schraenen—based in Antwerp, Belgium, will be doing discrete works of art that grow out of the details of the architecture to create these visual effects that play tricks on the eye. What additional exhibits will be on display this fall? We are presenting a piece by Anthony McCall, a British artist who started as a filmmaker and uses smoke and light to create geometric forms that exist in space. His work,

You and I, Horizontal (II) (Sept. 6-Dec. 29), will be shown in our video gallery in complement to the Place is the Space show. We also will have a new project called Street Views (Oct. 11-Dec. 29) by Jennifer Steinkamp. Her video projections, such as a curtain of undulating flowers, will be projected onto the front of building. Tell us about the unique upcoming installation, Audible Interruptions. Audible Interruptions, curated by local sound artist Kevin Harris, will feature sound art pieces installed in the front hallway and restrooms—and may even be expanded to the elevators. One piece is by local poet and artist Jessica Baran and local artist Brett Williams (Sept. 6-Dec. 29). The exhibit really is intended to activate and energize these public spaces—places where you don’t expect to experience art. How is the CAM experience different from other local art institutions? You are able to see local artists alongside other artists from all over the world. Also, we really can present a broader range of art from recent history, as well as from the past. Something that really defines CAM is that you get a sense of art history, but also get to see what artists are going for right in the moment.

unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world* KATY PERRY

Last week, pictures of the pop star were once again splashed all over the tabloids, although not for the reasons one might think. The Roar singer was snapped without makeup, in jeans and a T-shirt, walking in her neighborhood with a bottled water and a snack. Seriously? Is the price of celebrity so high that Katy can’t even enjoy something as mundane and, frankly, healthy as a morning stroll without making headline news? On the other hand, something that wholesome happens so rarely…

J.LO The American Idol judge had to get authorities involved last week when she discovered that an overly zealous fan had been in her pool house...for four days. The man snuck onto her East Hampton estate and when no one seemed to notice, he decided to make himself at home. That is creepy. What’s even more troubling is the fact that had it not been for his standing lunch order and the poolside yoga, who knows how long he could have stayed?

JASON SEGEL The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star has been playing a new role of late: boyfriend. Segel has been tearing up the Hollywood singles scene, dating one eligible starlet after the next. His latest bit of arm candy is leggy actress Cameron Diaz. The pair has been spotted all over town canoodling and deliriously happy, although Segel doesn’t seem to want to lock down anything longterm. That’s perfectly fine, although just wait ‘til he works his way around to Taylor Swift—then you’re really going to see some drama…and no doubt several Top 10 singles.

MADONNA The Queen of Pop attended the opening of her Hard Candy Gym in Rome sporting a youthful accessory: a grill. The Vogue singer hit the red carpet with a mouthful of metal, posing for photos in fingerless leather gloves and a black lace bustier. The gold veneers rimming her front teeth are certainly edgy and attention-grabbing, but Madonna needs to be careful. At her age, something like that could easily be mistaken for spinach. * So don’t quote me BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

SEPTEMBER MOVIE PREVIEW

Legends of the Fall

S

EPTEMBER IS FINALLY HERE. Finally. We can stop paying $14 to watch good actors sell themselves out and million-dollar budgets spin down the drain. What’s more, if the early offerings from Lee Daniels and Woody Allen are any indication, the fall should be brimming with Oscar-worthy films. The releases for September beg to differ. It’s not that there’s nothing worth seeing, it’s just that there’s nothing worth nominating—well, almost nothing. Here’s what’s coming in September: September 6 Riddick The studios must be oddly intimidated by the One Direction movie because this is the only nationwide opening this weekend. Vin Diesel returns to the big screen (his shift manager at DQ must have let him leave early) to reprise his role as the title character. Battling an alien invasion on a foreign planet, Riddick must activate a rescue beacon to secure his escape. Picture After Earth without the star power, budget or special effects, then start scrolling through On Demand. September 13 Insidious: Chapter 2 As one would expect on a Friday the 13th weekend, a horror film is the big release. Fans of the genre already are buying tickets for this hotly anticipated sequel to what was a surprisingly good first installment. Beautiful wife, beautiful husband, beautiful house, beautiful neighborhood, haunted children. So what else is new? The Family I honestly don’t know what to make of this. The cast (Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones) would seem to indicate a top-notch comedy. The premise, on the other hand, begs to differ. The mobster-in-witnessprotection comedy has been tried and tried (and

Debbie Baldwin

TANGENTIAL THINKER tried), with limited success. Maybe moving the mobsters to France will make for better comedy— or maybe the French will find it funny. I have to give this cast and director Luc Besson the benefit of the doubt. September 20 Prisoners Hugh Jackman and Terrence Howard star as fathers of two young girls who are abducted from their sleepy neighborhood. When the police fail to obtain the whereabouts of his daughter from the prime suspect, Jackman’s character takes matters into his own hands. This has all the makings of a first-rate thriller. Rush Again, we revisit a familiar theme: race-car driving. Here, Chris Hemsworth stars as a playboy Formula One driver. He is unbeatable and living like a rock star until a daunting French rival emerges. Ron Howard is directing so I’m sure it’s going to be gripping. I will therefore stifle my Talladega Nights comparisons. Shake ‘n Bake. September 27 Don Jon What’s that you say? A big-studio release that may actually have Oscar buzz? Shocking. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a smooth talking ladies man tainted by a pornography addiction. When he meets the naïve Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), he becomes determined to forge a new romantic path.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Lyons

NEITHER SUPER NOR NATURAL RATING: 5 out of 10

I

LOVED Harry Potter, I liked Twilight and I tolerated The Hunger Games. Now, I’m afraid my tolerance for tween supernatural lit has reached its sell-by date—especially when the studio seems to throw together every standard character and plot point from any, and every, previous film of the same ilk and hope for the best. It’s like throwing flour, sugar and eggs in the oven and hoping a cake comes out. Clary (Lily Collins) is a less-than-ordinary girl whose world is turned upside-down when she learns she is descended from a long line of shadow-hunters—angelic creatures who kill the demons threatening our world. In order to find her missing mother and save the world, she joins with her legion to fight evil in a bizarro underside of New York. (I think it’s just east of The Village. I vaguely remember being there myself one night, very late.) Let me put it this way: There was a boy five or six rows behind me throwing popcorn at a girl sitting a couple of seats to my left, and the exchange was far more interesting than what was happening on-screen. Lily Collins is a talented, beautiful young actress, but even she couldn’t save this. And sadly, there are more to come.

The Spectacular Now SCHOOL DAZE RATING: 8 out of 10

THE LYONS PHOTO BY JOHN LAMB

I

WAS SPOILED AS AN angst-ridden teen. I had John Hughes and John Cusack, Matthew Broderick and Molly Ringwald. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have those movies, until they were gone… Fear of comparison sent filmmakers running from the teen dramedy, venturing into the genre only to explore sex romps or insanely wild parties. Well, here, we have a film that dares to plumb the dark depths, and while it may not stand up to the legendary status of the great movies about the high school experience, it is a touching, troubling and charming film. Sutter (Miles Teller) is in high-school heaven. He has a gorgeous girlfriend (Brie Larson), an easy job and a car. He also has a troubling home life, a failing academic career and a budding drinking problem. After a particularly wild night, he finds himself on a strange front lawn, in a strange neighborhood, being awakened by a strange girl, Aimee (Shailene Woodley). She doesn’t run in Sutter’s crowd, but the two have a common bond that draws them together. And while Aimee is a diligent, innocent, focused girl, determined to rise above her past, Sutter is headed down a very different path. I really liked this film. It’s not an ’80s teen comedy by any stretch. It is, however, a moving story of a boy trying to become a man, in spite of himself.

THE STORY Ben Lyons is dying of cancer, and is confined to a Manhattan hospital room. His wife of 40 years, Rita, sits in a chair by his bedside, thumbing through a magazine. He asks about his adult daughter Lisa, a recovering alcoholic; but couldn’t care less about his gay son, Curtis. These are the Lyons. They’re a New York City Jewish family, and they are highly dysfunctional. When Lisa and Curtis arrive at the hospital, they’re shocked to learn how little time Ben has left. Let the brawls begin anew.

HIGHLIGHTS Despite a lengthy and successful career as a playwright, The Lyons marked Nicky Silver’s Broadway debut when it opened in 2012. It’s scheduled to make its first London appearance, just after its St. Louis premiere concludes. This local rendition marks the first theatrical collaboration of actor Bobby Miller and director Wayne Salomon in 26 years. It’s a splendid reunion, a tantalizing theatrical treat for an audience to benefit from the wealth of dramatic knowledge that the duo brings to the stage.

PLAY: The Lyons COMPANY: Max & Louie Productions VENUE: COCA Black Box Theater, 524 Trinity Ave. DATES: Aug. 30 and 31, Sept. 1 TICKETS: $25-$30; 795-8778 or maxandlouie. com

RATING: Salomon’s direction is both nurturing and democratic, an important 4.5 on a scale distinction in that Silver’s work is surprising in its complexity and scope of 1-to-5. and requires a director who can navigate it successfully through myriad nuances. So, while Miller (as Ben) is a compelling and hilarious presence in Act I, his character gives way in the second act to his wife and children. Miller depicts Ben as irascible and uncompromising, hanging on dearly to his narrow world view even as the end approaches. Judi Mann makes the most of her colorful character, Rita, a woman who reveals shocking truths about her life during the play’s two acts and two hours. Meghan Maguire’s emotions can turn on a dime as the fragile Lisa. She’s alternately protective of her father, angry at the late word of his condition delivered by her mother and defensive of her own children’s upbringing. As Curtis, Charlie Barron has the burden of proof to bear at the start of the work’s second act (when it veers from rollicking comedy to dark drama), which he carries off with considerable aplomb. The Lyons is deceptively deep and provocative in ways you won’t expect. It’s engaging and rewarding theater.

Hops aficionados can look forward to quaffing The Origin, a blend of Imperial Stout, Black Oatwine and Baltic Porter; Saison du Fermier, a saison fermented in a chardonnay barrel; and Brett Project #1, the first in a series of beers aged in wine barrels with different strains of Brettanomyces yeast to showcase its unique characteristics. The beers only will be available at the Perennial tasting room. In other beer news, creations from 17 microbreweries will be on hand for the Missouri Botanical Gardens’ Fall FestOf-Ale, hosted by the Garden’s Young Friends on Friday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event includes light appetizers, a commemorative tasting glass, and live music by Mike Mattingly. Gringo

Surf’s Up!

BY SIDNEY LEWIS

FROM THE TEAM BEHIND THE UBER-SUCCESSful Pi Pizzeria chain comes Gringo, entering the increasingly crowded arena of Mexican eateries in St. Louis with what it describes as “modern Mexican food with a twist.” With such a pedigreed background, expectations have been high for Gringo, so we headed down to the CWE to see if it measured up. There may not be a better chunk of real estate for a new restaurant than Gringo’s digs at the corner of Euclid and McPherson avenues. The space, which used to house Rothschild’s Antiques, is now wide open and airy, awash in bright colors in an attempt to replicate what the establishment calls a “re-imagined Mid-Century Baja surf lodge.” The menu has a variety of platters, but the main attraction is the tacos, and it was this area we focused on while sipping a couple of malty Schlafly Gringo Munich Negras ($4), one of three custom brews Schlafly created for the restaurant. The lineup that came to the table was impressive: the Octo Taco ($4), featuring grilled octopus, refried beans and a chunky citrus salsa; the Chicken Tinga ($3), slow-braised chicken in a smoky tinga sauce; the Gringo Taco ($3), a classic with a crispy tortilla shell, ground beef, cheese and pico de gallo; the Barbacoa ($4), with slow-cooked beef and pickled onion; Chapulines ($5), sauteed grasshoppers (yep, that’s right) with green chile relish, avocado and cilantro; Grilled Fish (market price), nestled in crispy Napa cabbage; and Hongos ($4), Ozark mushrooms with refried beans and topped with arugula.

We also added on a side of Vegetable Escabeche ($2), a ramekin of sweet pickled carrots, jalapenos, onions and bell peppers, and some guacamole ($2). The taste results of our taco smorgasbord were a mixed bag. The Hongos was an unexpected delight, with earthy mushrooms set off nicely by the fresh arugula. The Grilled Fish featured a healthy chunk of tender mahi-mahi that was almost too much for the tortilla to handle; and the Gringo Taco was an old-school combo of beef, tomato, lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream in a crunchy shell. All three of these tacos were proof-positive that sometimes, the simplest ingredients and flavors yield the tastiest results. On the other hand, the Chicken Tinga and Barbacoa were both dry and fairly bland. As for the Chapulines, unfortunately, the little critters were doused in copious amounts of lime and salt that overwhelmed them. Likewise, the octopus in the Octo Taco was pushed aside by the sweet and tangy citrus salsa. A lighter hand with the sauces and seasonings would be most welcome. We finished up with an order of Churros ($4). These came as bite-sized, sugar-coated nuggets with cinnamon horchata sauce on the side. The lighter sauce really allowed the pastry to shine. Gringo has a lot going for it; and with a little bit of tweaking, could well become a CWE standard.

You might not know that cremation and on-site cremation are two very different options. Maryville continued from page 19 third year in a row as a ‘Military Friendly’ school, a designation given to the top 15 percent of colleges and universities. The recognition was based on a well-facilitated admission process, as well as online learning options. Maryville offers a fully online MBA program through its partnership with Scott Air Force Base, which allows soldiers to continue their studies even if they are deployed. Lombardi attributes partnerships with local organizations and businesses for many of the school’s recent strides. Among them are Mercy, SSM, St. Luke’s Hospital, Rawlings and Edward Jones. “Those extensive partnerships involve our students in clinical practicums, as well as internships. We really listen to those entities in terms of what they want their teachers, physical therapists or financial advisers to know, and we structure the curriculum around those needs,” Lombardi says. “We strongly believe in an innovative liberal arts core for all students; but we’re in a period today where young people, and people of all ages, need a set of experiences that gives them the practical

ability not just to get a job, but to move from career to career. It’s not either a liberal arts base or practical knowledge anymore—it’s both.” Beyond its national and local recognition, the pure numbers speak volumes for the university’s successes—with a record 4,300 students last year and an expected 5,000 this fall, representing a 19 percent year-over-year growth. That’s due to a certain level of foresight: “At a time when the economy was faltering in 2008 and 2009, when a lot of universities turned inward and focused on recruiting locally, we expanded our recruitment base nationally,” Lombardi says. “We now have students from 47 states and 32 countries.” And those students are completing their studies at the school in healthy numbers, as well. Maryville ranks second in the metropolitan area for retention, at 87 percent; and also second for its student graduation rate, at 76 percent, Lombardi says. “It’s not just the great faculty in the classroom, but also the mentoring and advising—from the moment that we recruit them and beyond—that accounts for our success. That’s why students want to come here, and they want to stay.”
