EDITOR’S NOTE This week, a group of local women was honored for five years of giving back. Eighty-six members strong, the Fontbonne Community Connection (FCC) has provided $339,000 in grants to Fontbonne University since its founding, impacting 65 projects. The group reflects a growing national trend. According to Reuters, women are changing the way philanthropy is done. With more and more women accumulating wealth and determining how they want their money distributed, they are establishing a new culture in charitable giving. The report also shows that female philanthropists prefer to raise money in a group, which brings us to the Fontbonne group. FCC is an example of a so-called ‘giving circle.’ It started in 2007, when several alumnae decided to pool their resources to support Fontbonne-related projects and programs. Members, who now include alums and their family and friends, have each pledged a minimum $1,000 contribution a year. Their efforts this year have helped fund 14 projects ranging from on-campus renovations to international service trips to places like Costa Rica. Sounds like a great idea to me. Congratulations! Keep the circle going!

The Show House, presented by U.S. Bank, will be on view from Oct. 6 through Oct. 21, with proceeds benefitting local charities. Last week, Show House designers gathered during a reception at THE TROVA PROJECT in Clayton, where they viewed and selected pieces from the gallery to incorporate into their design. Happy 100th birthday to THE WILSON SCHOOL, whose students and staff kicked off the celebration this week. Festivities included a service project to benefit Operation Food Search. Students and their families brought in wrapped ‘birthday boxes’ filled with traditional birthday party supplies like cake mix, frosting, decorations and candles, which were donated to the charity. If you’ve been to GRAND CENTER in the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed a new attraction: a large-scale, interactive piece of art, literally. ART at Grand Center is a 30-foot-tall illuminated metal sculpture that spells out ‘art.’ Located at Strauss Park across from the Fox Theatre, the sculpture is installed on the façade of a building and has been programmed to a computer control system to allow for interactive commands. For instance, a person could walk up with a smart phone, snap a QR code and then change the color and pattern of the artwork. The piece was commissioned by KEN KRANZBERG and designed by architect DEREK LAUER of Lauer Architecture A snapshot of ART at Grand Center Progressive Design. GRAND CENTER has also been awarded a Great Streets Planning Grant for approximately $300,000. The award, from the East West Gateway Council of Governments, will help support the framework for the Grand Center Master Plan, which addresses areas such as improving visitor experience, future land use and parking. In addition, Grand Center recently was awarded a $75,000 National Endowment for the Arts planning grant to be used for the ‘Art Walk’ component of the plan. The Art Walk, a mid-block pedestrian way located between Grand and Spring avenues, will make it easier for pedestrians to connect among the district’s venues.

■ GO BOLD. This fall is color galore—royal blue, bold reds, mustards and purples. ■ POP OF COLOR. Colored bottoms are again going to be big. ■ TIMELESS TREND. Dresses reminiscent of the ’60s are back in style. ■ ACCENT IT. Vests, as well as novelty jackets and coats, also are very popular. ■ COMFORT CLOTHES. There’s a lot of comfort in this fall’s fashion, such as stretch jeans.

■ TAKE TWO. The trend is still leaning toward two-button coats for suits and sport coats, with the button stance a little higher, making it a more current look. ■ SOFT LAYERS. In fall fabrics, cashmere for blazers will be big. ■ FALL FLANNEL. We also are seeing flannel suiting in browns with some gold and burnt orange tones. ■ SUIT UP. Dressy suiting is also back—in dark black and navy with a tone-on-tone pattern in the fabric. ■ SLEEK STYLE. Flat-front, nonpleated pants in darker tones complete the look.
JEANS, JACKETS AND JEWELS
■ DARK DENIM. Go with gemcolored denim, such as forest green, slate gray or burgundy. ■ ON THE FRINGE. For footwear, choose fringe boots. ■ ALL ABOUT LACE. Mix lots of lace into your fall wardrobe. ■ LAYER IT UP. Add accessories like scarves, multi-strand bracelets and initial necklaces. ■ FABULOUS FUR. Faux fur is another big trend.

THE CURTAIN EXCHANGE By Lisa Watson
fter almost seven years of providing a wide variety of high-quality curtains, Ellen Ross found the next step for her shop, The Curtain Exchange, in a partnership with bedding specialist Peacock Alley. “We think it’s a good addition so we can do the entire bedroom, not just the curtains,” Ross says. In the five months since The Curtain Exchange started carrying the bedding, Ross says there has been a great response from her customers. Decorative matelassé bedding has been extremely popular, she says, especially in neutrals like gray, silver and cream. “That’s one of the reasons they’re such a good fit for us: Their fabrics and our fabrics coordinate very well together,” she says. Approximately 40 to 50 percent of Peacock Alley’s fabrics are made at its Dallas headquarters, while imports from far-flung locales like Portugal and Italy also play a major role. “So we’re supporting both the global economy and the U.S. economy,” says Peacock Alley’s Brad Cleveland.

Cleveland notes that Peacock Alley is familyowned, and was started by Mary Ella Gabler. “She had a vision 40 years ago that people would stop using dens and living rooms like they did back then and shift to the bedroom; that bedrooms would become more of a nest,” he says. “It was very insightful of her having that vision so long ago.” The company focuses on fabrics ranging from Egyptian cotton to linen, and is most famous for its luxurious sheets and matelassé bedding. One of its newest collections, Lucca, is made from faux fur inspired by the Serengeti. “When we came out with this fabric, everyone said it was so not Peacock
Alley, but it’s been hugely successful,” Cleveland adds. The Curtain Exchange and Peacock Alley also make a good team because of their shared ambition of providing uniquely customized products and services. Peacock Alley offers customization, including monogramming, Cleveland notes; while The Curtain Exchange offers both ready-made curtains, along with hundreds of fabrics that can be customized to make a perfect fit for any home. “Everything we have in stock, people can come in and take home,” Ross says. “They can put them in their room and see if it will work for them, or if the size is not right, we will order them to their exact size.” The store also offers in-home consultations, where an experienced staff member will take measurements and help with everything from paint colors to fabrics. Cleveland will visit The Curtain Exchange at its Clayton location on Thursday, Sept. 13, for a seminar on how to make the perfect bed. He will be available for questions, and there also will be a drawing for a $500 gift certificate that the winner can use for anything in the store.

LEAD STORY—The Ryan Tradition Seller’s Checklist For Your Million-Dollar Home Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill Distinctive Property New on the Market

Seller’s Checklist K By Lisa Watson
KAREN & DAN HOEMKE Coldwell Banker Premier Group
K Make the home as bright and inviting as
possible—every light should be turned on during showings. Remove high-efficiency light bulbs and replace them with standard bulbs…then take the high-efficiency bulbs to your new home.
K Paint the front door if
needed and replace handles if they’re old and worn. If the lock is difficult to open, it sends an immediate impression to the buyer that the home has not been taken care of.
K Ask your agent for recommendations when
they tour the home. A fresh set of eyes from the agent will see the home as buyers will.
KATIE CURRAN Janet McAfee Real Estate
K Image is everything. Make them slam on the brakes as they see your house from the outside. Gutters should be cleaned and straight, add fresh mulch and border the walkway with something spectacular. Place two planters or topiaries at the front door, freshly paint the door, make sure the door bell is in working order, and front lights are cleaned and bulbs are working.
K Nostrils flare the minute
everyone enters a house. All animals should be out during this time. What smell do you like? Certainly not smoke, animals, must or Glade plug-ins! A sure winner is pink stargazer lilies in three rooms; they smell amazing.
K Create an indoor feeling on your porch or
veranda. Outdoor living is the newest and greatest space to increase the value of your home. It becomes a ‘bonus’ room when they are looking at your house.
ELAINE MEDVE Upper End Properties
K Find the right agent: Selling can be a long, arduous process, so be sure to find an agent who you will work well with and who will promote your home.
K Check out properties in your area that are on the market so you know your competition. Being an educated seller is key!
MILLION-DOLLAR MARKET PAGE 24 AUGUST 31, 2012
K Consider a pre-listing
inspection: Find out what repairs are needed or are likely to be requested early, so you can have more confidence as you negotiate with a buyer.
JIGGS DUNN Prudential Alliance Realtors
K I’m all about condition and appearance. You might have to spend $5,000 to $8,000 to get the home where it should be. It will get the house sold.
K Houses get labeled like
bad children. The first impression sticks. You want to get that good talk going right out of the gate.
K Each house is different.
Some people need to declutter, other people don’t have enough, and sometimes you bring a stager in to do what I call ‘foofing and poofing.’ Put some color in, move things around, and it’s amazing the difference it makes.
help you look at your house from a buyer’s perspective.
K Choose an agent with a
solid sales performance record, extensive marketing expertise and a tenacious spirit who will deliver exceptional sales results without sacrificing personal service.
K When the house goes under contract,
accommodate inspectors and appraisers without fuss; they can make or break your deal! Show flexibility on requests for inspection items to be fixed; you don’t want to take the house back on the market.
J. WARNER Laura McCarthy Real Estate
K Coming on the market, be prepared to be flexible with timing.
K Price the home at the sales prime point—
don’t inflate the asking price. Visit the competition so you know what you’re up against.
K Have the home
show-ready before coming on the market, and work to get the exterior curb appeal to its absolute best.
MARC LEVINSON Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty
K The preparations necessary for placing a
million-dollar listing into the marketplace should not be dramatically different than placing a home for sale at a fraction of the price. One primary key for all listings should be to declutter throughout the home.
K Buyers often head to the kitchen first, so be sure to remove almost everything from your counters to augment the impression of maximum cooking-prep space.
K The higher the home is
priced, the buyer’s expectations rise accordingly. This means everything should be near to perfect at all times. Milliondollar listings should be showcases.
MAYA KEFALOV Coldwell Banker Gundaker, Ladue/Clayton
K Gather your paperwork from your closing
package when you bought the house—including your survey and inspections, repairs or remodeling receipts, and before-and-after pictures—to LADUENEWS.COM
DEEDEE TATE AND ANN FARWELL Gladys Manion Real Estate
K We work to educate the seller. They might need to re-paint, change the hardware in the kitchen or bathroom, or add granite countertops. A lot of buyers don’t want to update; they want something move-in ready.
K Consider staging,
depending on your situation. If furnishings are sparse or non-existent, we encourage people to stage, and we can help them arrange that.
K In this competitive market, we’re encouraging clients to start preparing several weeks or months ahead of time. A lot of work is sometimes required up-front for a successful, quick sale.

Q&A Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill By Nancy Robinson
t. Louis has an unusually large inventory of beautiful, architecturally significant homes in wonderful old neighborhoods—a fact that distinguishes it from many other major American cities and makes a lasting impression on visitors. We recently discussed the subject of preserving, modernizing and furnishing these homes with interior designer Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, whose latest book, The Life of the House: How Rooms Evolve, debuts this fall.
S
LN: Many grand homes in St. Louis are at risk for a variety of reasons, most notably the large sums required to maintain them. What is your experience
in this regard? HSC: Most of the houses I have visited are very beautiful, both from architectural and decoration standpoints. They often have beautiful furniture and artifacts, which have been made or bought for the house and handed down for generations. Some may feel tired with frayed and faded curtains and shabby paintwork, but this is all part of the English understated elegance. You are right in saying that some families now cannot afford the upkeep of the properties. Even worse, however, is when some new money comes along and rips out all the character of the house and makes it feel like a five-star hotel!
LN: What are the most common mistakes people make when creating the interior of a large, expensive home? HSC: Making the rooms too large, thus un-inviting, and having too many rooms which have the same function (i.e. for TVwatching). LN: What do you make of ‘McMansions,’ the architectural invention designed to impress on the outside by virtue of large scale and multiple elevations? HSC: I think many newly built American homes can be and are very stylish. I have seen a lot of these, especially in the South around Atlanta and Dallas. But some of the pitfalls are trying to encompass too many styles within one building (i.e. a bit of Gothic, a bit of Tudor, a bit of French, etc.), which looks mismatched.
From The Life of the House: How Rooms Evolve by Henrietta SpencerChurchill, Rizzoli New York, 2012. MILLION-DOLLAR MARKET PAGE 32 AUGUST 31, 2012
LN: Do you think it is a mistake to use modern furnishings in an older, classically styled architectural setting? HSC: Personally, I prefer to use antiques and furnishings suitable for the period, but this is not always possible or practical.
LADUENEWS.COM
Certainly you can use contemporary art and the odd piece of modern furniture, but I think houses benefit from being authentically furnished. LN: What is your favorite period style? HSC: Georgian is my favorite and my expertise, having been brought up in a Georgian house and surrounded by many others. The scale and proportions are great and can be applied to large and small rooms. I like large windows and lots of light. Georgian architectural details are very elegant, and there is a plethora of choice. Equally, I love Georgian furniture and my favorite periods are Early Georgian, Palladian and late Georgian Regency. I am not such a fan of Neo Classical as it is a little too fussy and delicate. LN: Any tips on how to furnish in the tradition of a stately home that will stand the test of time? HSC: I don’t think stately homes are necessarily the best example of good taste or timeless interiors. Often they are laid out as museums or showpieces and are open to the public so they don’t reflect the true lifestyle of that period. To start from scratch today to furnish an important country house, you would need a large budget in order to acquire the furniture and objects that are suitable—that is, if you can find them. Newly built houses can be furnished with good, quality reproductions, which look very good and I use a lot in my work. But if possible, try and mix reproductions with antiques, which will have the patina. Most important, buy quality products that will hold their value and last and age gracefully.

LN: What keeps audiences returning to The Rep? SW: Two things: the mix of titles we’re choosing and the high-quality work we do, from the acting to the sets, costumes, lights and props. SW: The season is basically all new, except for Daddy Long Legs, an intimate musical with wonderful music and a great romantic story; and the comedic play, The Foreigner, which we did a quarter of a century ago. The rest of the shows are firsts for us—Good People was just on Broadway last year; Sense and Sensibility will have a relatively new adaptation that beautifully captures Jane Austen’s story; and Double Indemnity, which is a new adaptation of James M. Cain’s suspense novel.

Q&A Lisa Melandri CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM By Laura Graesser
A LADUE NEWS SPECIAL SECTION
L
isa Melandri took the reigns of the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) this month when she assumed the position of director, replacing interim director Dwyer Brown and former leader Paul Ha. Originally from Boston, Melandri studied art history at Harvard University and received her master of arts from Williams College. She worked at the Galleries of Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia before joining the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2001 as the deputy director for exhibitions and programs. Ladue News recently spoke with Melandri about her new position, as well as the move to St. Louis with her husband, Jordan Gaunce.
Coming: October 5, 2012
LN: After more than 10 years at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, what attracted you to this new opportunity? LM: I had heard wonderful things about the museum through my travels. I think there’s something special about an institution that has legs like that and has received such high marks from the art world. Also, what became very apparent to me was the vibrancy of the cultural ecosystem in St. Louis, with a huge, committed following and base of support. I got the sense that the population really believes in and supports the arts, which is very exciting. LN: How will you bring your experience and knowledge to make CAM even better? LM: I think it’s important to look both inward and outward. Looking right outside our front door, we want to make sure that people know what CAM has to offer, enable them to take advantage of the exhibitions and programs, and really be served by the institution. At the same time, looking outward, it’s important to remain part of the global dialogue about contemporary art. We need to figure out how we can link what we’re doing in St. Louis with what’s happening internationally. I’m looking forward to balancing those two things, and I think we can do a lot with our programming in those regards.

LN: What do you think CAM has to offer St. Louis? LM: While other museums do contemporary programming, CAM is specific to that, and we want a whole range of audiences to take advantage, from those who are savvy about contemporary art, to the youth audience who can gain exposure and understanding as they grow into adulthood. Because it’s non-collecting, we can really

focus on being the seismograph for what’s happening out in the world. You can have a different experience every time you walk through the doors—you may not love what you see this time, and adore it next time, but in every case there’s an element of discovery. LN: What are some of the challenges of running a contemporary museum? LM: Contemporary art can be challenging for the general public, so one of the major jobs we have is to make sure everyone has as much access as possible so they can get information and feel comfortable in the space. There also is the global challenge of keeping the support of the community in order to continue our work—that’s at the forefront of every museum staff’s minds. But I don’t think those challenges are insurmountable, and I have the sense that the St. Louis community is incredibly invested—it’s palpable here. LN: Did you have any trepidation about moving here? LM: I wasn’t familiar with St. Louis, but in the few weeks that we’ve been here, we’ve fallen in love with the neighborhoods. Coming from Boston and Philadelphia, it feels comfortable. But I was warned about the brutal summers, and the first week we arrived, it was over 102 degrees every day! LN: What are you most excited about for your new position? LM: The most thrilling thing for me is immersing yourself in a new place and truly integrating yourself—seeing what makes a city tick and who you serve. I’m really excited that this is a museum with strong roots, and it’s a well-oiled machine. When you walk into a place that’s running beautifully, you’re in the privileged position to dream big.

American
Treasure
SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM By Diane Alt
A
ll summer, conservators have worked diligently at the Saint Louis Art Museum to restore a 19th-century American treasure: The Panorama of the Monumental Grandeur of the Mississippi Valley, the only survivor of six Mississippi panoramas known to have existed. With significant progress gained during the exhibition, visitors to the Museum were permitted to observe as nine of the scenes were repaired, resulting in 18 finished panels of 25 overall. Curator Janeen Turk says that conservators hope to complete three more by the end of the exhibit, which runs through Sept. 3. “Besides the fact that visitors were able to see this amazing, massive painting that has been off of view for most of its lifetime, I think they have been really excited to see the conservators at work,” Turk notes. “Visitors don’t often get the chance to see a painting being restored before their eyes. And we find that many are interested in the training of the conservators and the materials they are using.” Turk describes the restoration led by paintings conservator Paul Haner as a process that includes reclining the panorama, panel by panel, to a horizontal

position, and spraying a gelatin solution over the entire surface to stabilize the paint, while applying a bit of tension to the fabric to relax the wrinkles. “The creasing of the cloth is where a lot of the loss of paint occurred,” she explains. “To flatten out those creases is an important step. From there, they use watercolor crayons and sometimes a slightly damp brush to fill in the areas of missing color; they then layer the colors to match the original color used.” Some time around 1850, Dr. Montroville Dickeson, who enjoyed archaeology as a pastime, commissioned artist John J. Egan to paint a scrolling panorama illustrating life in the Mississippi River Valley, including scenes depicting the 16th-century burial of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, an 18th-century battle and 19th-century Native Americans. Turk points out that in the mid-19th century, moving panoramas were an important form of visual entertainment and information. “We have objects on view that are artifacts from Dickeson’s own collection,” she says.
“We also have drawings from his papers that relate to the scenery in the panorama, so that’s an exciting element that gives us insight into how Egan came up with some of the scenes and how he
worked with Dickeson.” Because so few of these historic illustrations exist today, the importance of this work is immense. “In their heyday, the Mississippi River was the most popular subject for these panoramas. In particular, the subject held special appeal for American audiences because it represented the American West and the frontier it embodied.” Having started restoration in 2011, Turk says the project is expected to be completed next year. When finished, it will become a permanent installation of the Museum’s American collection. And while its scrolling days are over due to its fragile state, the panorama will be set up for viewing one scene at a time. “Originally, people would see the panorama one scene at a time,” Turk notes. “But we will change it on a schedule, like once a month. We may create a framing device to go around it—or we could just show it on the apparatus that it’s on, as people are interested in the mechanical aspect of it, as well.”

WILLIAM BERNOUDY

WILLIAM BERNOUDY
S
t. Louis is all abuzz about the upcoming Ladue News Show House this fall—as well they should be, for this is the first Mid-Century Modern home to be featured as a show house locally! The home was designed by William Adair Bernoudy (1910-1988) for Mr. and Mrs. John J. Horan and their seven children. Perfectly positioned on 18 acres in Town & Country, there is much to explore inside and outside of this significant architectural property. First, a little information on what is known as the Mid-Century Modern movement: The term relates to interior, graphic, product, urban and architectural design between the years of 1933 and 1965. Keep in mind that we have just maneuvered our way through the heavy Victorian period, followed by the ‘less cluttered’ but still ‘full’ Edwardian period where ‘more is more’ was the standard rule of all design. Also, with one World War recently concluded and one ongoing, designers and architects of this time viewed building materials differently— partly due to the scarcity of previously abundant resources, which required more ingenuity on their part. There are many names that you would recognize from this period: Alvar Aalto, Harry Bertoia, Marcel Breuer, Charles and Ray Eames, Paul T. Frankl, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Neutra, Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen and, of course, Frank Lloyd Wright. That brings us to William Bernoudy.

Bernoudy (1910-1988) was a St. Louis son who, on his first attempt at higher education at Washington University, dropped out. Preferring to be outdoors, he spent a great deal of time on float trips and working odd jobs. A friend showed him a copy of Time magazine that had just featured an article on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Fellowship at Spring Green, Wisc. Bernoudy, who developed an interest in architecture as a youngster, spent $2,000 of a recent inheritance to enroll. Not only was there instruction from the Mr. Wright, there were famous guests like Gertrude Stein who visited and shared their worldly views with the 30 eager students. It was during this time that Bernoudy worked on Fallingwater, the famous Pennsylvania house that would reignite Wright’s career. After Bernoudy’s Taliesin years and a stint in the service, he formed a St. Louis architectural firm with his business partner, Edouard Jules Mutrux, a partnership that lasted through 1966. Bernoudy introduced to his hometown a style of architecture that this ‘center hall, two-story’ traditional community had never experienced before.
To truly appreciate Bernoudy’s homes, you have to engage in the entire design both inside and out. The landscaping was as integral to the design as the brick and mortar. There usually is not a typical front entry, rather a continuous design around the home that makes the visitor aware of the importance of the elements of the building materials and how they integrate the exterior of the home with the adjoining landscape, as well as the surrounding property. After his partnership with Mutrux dissolved, Bernoudy did fewer commissions, but they were no less important than his heyday in the 1950s. Like all great architects, he took his cues from the classic components that the Greeks introduced and adapted them to a new style that could stand on its own. His work is so widely respected that he was honored with the William A. Bernoudy Residency in Architecture at the American Academy in Rome. The architect died on Aug. 2, 1988, at the age of 77. His wife, Gertrude, whom he married in 1955, passed away in 1994 at age 79. The Ladue News Show House opens Oct. 6 and runs through Oct. 21. Visit laduenews.com for more information. TANGENTIAL THINKER
Unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world...* By Debbie Baldwin Jim Carrey
The royal bad boy is in trouble after naked pictures of him popped up on the Internet. Apparently, the playboy prince was having a little bit too much fun in Vegas last week. Multiple onlookers photographed him in his birthday suit, playing a game of strip pool with a young female companion. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for the pictures to leak. Would you excuse me for a moment? I just need to check something…
The former A-lister is poised for a comeback. Last week Carrey signed on for a new Dumb and Dumber sequel, and now, rumors are flying that Carrey is being courted for a big supporting role in the KickAss sequel, Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall. OK, maybe not so much a comeback as a video release party, but still.
Lauryn Hill
Oprah recently reached out to the singer, requesting an interview. Apparently, Oprah wanted to give Hill a chance to explain her recent troubles with the I.R.S. as she faces possible jail time for tax evasion. Hill denied the request. So either she doesn’t want to talk about it, or she realized, “I didn’t pay my taxes,” would be the shortest interview in history.
Oklahoma
A 5-year-old Oklahoma boy was forced to turn his Michigan football T-shirt inside out after school officials told him the shirt supporting the rival was in violation of the school’s dress code. I know that seems extreme, but really, it was a fairly mild punishment for the infraction. You should see what they do to you in Cambridge if you show up in a Yale T-shirt.
Road Outrage
By Debbie Baldwin
o, something funny happened to me the other day…or something disturbing—I can’t decide. Cranky, her best friend and two other girls were on their way to their first-ever ‘modeling’ photo shoot for Ladue News. They were booked to have their hair done at the new Breeze salon at 6 a.m., and then on to photos at 8:30. Those who know me well, know that an early start for me is around 10, so a 5 a.m. wake-up is a bit of a shock to the system. Nevertheless, I gather the girls, and at 8 a.m., I am ready to deliver them from point A to point B.

I turn onto Clayton Road by the Esquire and head for Forest Park. Cranky has great music on, I’m enjoying an ice-cold diet soda and the girls are discussing the Justin Bieber concert—all in all, it’s a very pleasant jaunt. Suddenly, a car juts in front of me, unusually close and unusually fast; and if I’m not mistaken, I think I spy, ahem, an extended digit. I shake my head. Surely, I imagined that. I didn’t make any sudden lane changes or lay on my horn. What’s more, the car in front of me is like the quintessential tree-hugger granola mobile. The bumper stickers on the back say things like ‘Coexist’ and ‘Recycle.’ I dismiss my paranoia as we pull up sideby-side to a light. I look at the driver, and he looks like Santa Claus: long, white beard, small round glasses. Surely, ‘Santa’ didn’t flip me off. Then as I pull up, with 14-year-old Cranky in the passenger seat, he turns and utters an expletive directed at me, You f***ing wh**e! Is it me, or is that a tad extreme for an inadvertent Tuesday morning traffic mishap? What’s more, I don’t even know what I’ve done. Cut him off? Sideswipe him? Slash his tires? I keep my car back after he rolls forward so we are no longer side-by-side and say the only thing I can think to say—quoting his own bumper sticker—Coexist! With that, he peels away—thankfully, in a different direction—and we carry on with our day. I laughed it off. Well, I tried to laugh it off. I don’t know if there’s a lesson to be learned here or not. I’m sad I could make someone that angry, and I’m disturbed someone could be capable of such anger. It can’t be healthy. I’ll have to remember that the next time somebody cuts me off.

Hit and Miss MOVIE REVIEW—HIT AND RUN By Debbie Baldwin
hen you see previews for this movie, you see a shoot-‘em-up action flick or a car chase/revenge thriller when in actuality, this is a romantic comedy—a violent romantic comedy, but nonetheless. Real-life couple Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard co-star, and do most of the work behind the camera, as well. They also managed to assemble an A-list supporting cast for this quirky, engaging story. Annie (Bell) meets Charlie (Shepard) in a sleepy Western town where she teaches at a junior college and he is in witness protection. Annie knows this; but hey, not everyone in witness protection is a criminal—it is called ‘witness’ protection. Their life is calm and uneventful with only an occasional commotionfilled visit from Charlie’s U. S. Marshall, Randy (Tom Arnold), interrupting their routine. All that changes when Annie is offered a dream job opportunity in Los Angeles, and Charlie—rather than risk losing her—literally decides to return to the scene of the crime. Well, you will be shocked to learn it doesn’t take long for Charlie’s former associates, Alex (Bradley Cooper) and Allen (Ryan Hansen), to learn of his re-emergence. I found this movie, how shall I put it, unobjectionable. Shepard and Bell have great chemistry and the supporting cast is loaded with talent. Even some of the smallest cameos are played by familiar faces—one can’t help but wonder what’s on the cutting room floor. The comedy is hit or miss—it’s hard to pull off a good prison rape joke— nevertheless, this was a decent, well-acted movie.

Shoot the Messenger MOVIE REVIEW—PREMIUM RUSH By Debbie Baldwin
hen I first read about this movie—a bicycle-messenger action flick—I mentally filed it under ‘vapid teen extreme-sports movie.’ You know, the rebellious group of fringe high school kids who turn to skateboarding/hip hop/BMX-racing/competitive hair-styling/interpretative dance to channel their angst and succeed in life. Then, three little words caught my eye: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Since his brilliant indie-film comeback, (500) Days of Summer, the man can do no wrong. Well, he can do a little wrong. The premise is simple. Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a Columbia Law School graduate who can’t bring himself to take a desk job, so he works as a bike messenger. At the end of his shift one day, he has one final run: a small white envelope that needs to go from Columbia to Chinatown. If you guessed the envelope was important and valuable and dangerous, and that bad people were trying to stop the delivery, give yourself a gold star. And that’s it, cat and mouse. The real star of the show is the cycling— the psychotic Manhattan street cycling. If you’ve either almost killed a bike messenger or been killed by one, you know what I mean. If Joseph Gordon-Levitt did his own stunts, then he definitely has some experience in the field. He’s a talented guy, but I cannot tell you to run right out and see this one.

THE VIOLET HOUR— MAX & LOUIE PRODUCTIONS By Mark Bretz STORY: On April Fools’ Day, 1919, aspiring young publisher John Pace Seavering faces an increasingly serious dilemma. An old friend, Denis McCleary, has popped by Seavering’s office to inquire about his opinion of McCleary’s sprawling novel. McCleary is desperate to have his work published to impress the wealthy father of the woman, Rosamund Plinth, he hopes to marry. Later that same day, Seavering is visited by the famous black songstress Jessie Brewster, who has given him her memoirs. She pressures Seavering not only as a noted performer, but also as his clandestine, older mistress. Since Seavering only has enough money to publish one book, he frets over his predicament. Complicating matters further, his assistant, Gidger, informs him that a mysterious machine delivered to their office is spewing out papers that happen to be from books published in the future. As the two of them pore over the documents, they learn not only about major historic events of the 20th century but also about their own futures. HIGHLIGHTS: Playwright Richard Greenberg’s The Violet Hour is an existential excursion into a panoply of perplexing problems, including loyalty, ambition, personal identity and time itself. Director Sydnie Ronga ensures that Greenberg’s musings are available to the audience through the pinpoint performances of her stellar cast and whimsical technical effects in this St. Louis premiere. OTHER INFO: Ronga’s pacing is steady as she guides her performers through two radically different acts of comparable, one-hour lengths. The first act is as uproariously funny as the second act is starkly and poignantly serious. Antonio Rodriguez shines as the dutiful yet defiant subordinate Gidger. There’s also polished interpretation by Drew Pannebecker as the indecisive publisher. He’s counter-balanced by Jake Ferree’s riveting performance as the impetuous, manic McCreary. Monica Parks is simply wonderful as the world-weary songstress, who adds to Jessie’s own surprising background with each nuance of a turned head or stoic expression in beguiling style. Betsy Bowman delights as the upper-crust Rosamund. The Violet Hour is dense in its myriad possibilities and well worth your attention. RATING:A 5 ON A SCALE OF 1-TO-5.

Henry VIII walks into THREE a bar... KINGS PUBLIC HOUSE By Sidney Lewis
here’s nothing like a good oldfashioned pub, a neighborhood watering hole with a big beer list and a menu full of stick-to-your ribs favorites. Three Kings Public House definitely has all this going for it and more. Three Kings is housed in the former Riddle’s Penultimate Cafe & Wine Bar, and takes full advantage of the expansive space. With a mix of high tops, booths and tables, there was more than enough seating to go around. The decor was classic pub—long bar, exposed brick and dark wood. The painted visages of Three Kings (King Kong, King Henry VIII and Elvis) overlooking the bar was the crowning touch. The beer selection at Three Kings was almost overwhelming, with some 28 choices just under the bottled-beer category, but we finally decided to try something new (to us anyway), a Myrcenary ($6), a hoppy double IPA; and something tried and true, one of our favorite hot weather beers: Schlafly Summer Lager ($5). Sometimes just the name of the dish is enough to entice us to order it. Such was the case with the Captain Crunch Shrimp ($9) under Starters. Yes, the six jumbo shrimp were breaded with a mix that included that favorite breakfast cereal, but this creation wasn’t just some sort of a goofy one-off kitchen stunt. The Cap’n added a nice sweetness to the juicy shrimp and played off
T
the spicy Thai dipping sauce, as well as the really flavorful Asian slaw that came with the dish. We had the opportunity to try Three King’s Gyro Sliders ($9) at a recent local event and were suitably impressed, so we had to get a full order. As the name implies, these little guys were basically traditional gyros on a bun instead of a pita—tender strips of lamb topped with feta cheese, lettuce and tomato and tzatziki sauce. Really simple and really good. From the burger selections we decided on the Flamethrower ($9), paired up with a regular House Salad ($4). The burger was plenty spicy, but not as hot as the name implies. It had green onion, cilantro, sweet chili sauce, pepper jack cheese and fried jalapenos, topped with sriracha mayo. It was substantial enough to give us a challenge, but not so hefty that we had to resort to the dreaded knife and fork. The salad was a standard mix of greens, grape tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers and croutons, elevated by a subtle raspberry vinaigrette that brought the ingredients together but didn’t overwhelm. For dessert, we had the Key Lime Cheesecake ($5), a pretty standard slice that did the job but was fairly unremarkable. The menu also included plenty of pub favorites like fish & chips and wings, as well as sandwich classics like the muffuletta and the reuben. We plan on heading back soon to give some of these a go, as well as indulge in one of the Irish whiskey flights we spied on the menu. Three Kings featured the best parts of the public house experience with enough culinary creativity to make things interesting without going the fullblown gastro-pub route.

Did Someone Say Ice Cream? By Matt Sorrell
W
ho doesn’t love ice cream? With all of the flavors and textures available, there’s a variety of this frozen dairy goodness to please every palate. Supremely versatile, it can be used as the basis for a top-flight dessert or as a vital component to complement a custom creation. Here are some decadent delights available around town that make fine use of ice cream:
1
B4P CAKE ECLIPSE RESTAURANT
Eclipse pastry chef Claire Robberson wanted to create something sweet and delicious without relying on that old standby, chocolate. Being a big fan of fruits and nuts in desserts, she combined brown butter and crushed pistachios to create a cake, then created a blueberry compote and tied the flavors together by putting a scoop of Serendipity honey ice cream between them. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

MATHEW’S KITCHEN
When chef/owner Mathew Unger asked for this childhood favorite from his ice cream purveyor, he was told, You can’t put those on a menu in a place like yours! Of course, there was no question if the combo of ice cream, nuts and a sugar cone would be delicious, but there was some doubt as to how to present it. Unger made it work by turning the treat on its top on the plate. Guests can dig in with a spoon, or just pick it up by hand, old-school style.
SIGNATURE BLONDIE BLONDIE’S COFFEE & WINE BAR
Separately, brownies and ice cream are pretty great, but put them together and it’s the perfect dessert combination. Blondie’s takes the pairing into another realm altogether by taking a butterscotch and toffee blonde brownie and topping it with Serendipity vanilla ice cream and house-made caramel sauce.

3
SUPREME CREAM PUFF FOUNTAIN ON LOCUST
Owner Joy Christensen says this is the quintessential dessert for ice cream lovers, calling it “simple, elegant and delicious.” It starts with a 3-inch baked pastry shell that’s then filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with hot fudge. The key to this sweet treat is aged ice cream, sourced from Cedar Crest Dairy in Wisconsin, which has just enough milk fat to be thick and rich without sacrificing flavor.

THE CLEOPATRA CYRANO’S
On the Cyrano’s menu for some 50 years, this lavish concoction was created specifically to be fit for royalty. Sort of an amped-up banana split, the Cleopatra features five scoops of French vanilla ice cream, bananas, strawberries, rum sauce and gold brick—a thicker, richer version of Magic Shell, courtesy of Ronnie’s Ice Cream. The impressive creation is classically crowned with whipped cream and a cherry.

SPAGHETTI & TOMATO SAUCE GELATO CIELO
Ice cream’s Italian cousin, gelato, is used in a multitude of desserts at Cielo, but it certainly takes center stage in this over-the-top presentation. Executive chef Fabrizio Schenardi uses house-made vanilla gelato for the ‘pasta,’ while raspberry serves as a stand-in for the ‘tomato sauce.’ Bellisima!
