MADEMAN DESIGN

As LN digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter relates, St. Louisan Nick Adams is pursuing his design-build dreams with his company Mademan Design, constantly trying to “push the envelope” and enlarge the area architectural profile.

Writer/photographer Mabel Suen journeys to The Hill in St. Louis to introduce LN readers to Carnivore, a steakhouse/Italian restaurant launched in May by Joe Smugala and Mike Lutker with their spouses, Kerri Smugala and Casie Lutker.

On the cover 10 Concordance Academy offers a clean slate to the silent prison populations, who seek to re-enter society, make positive contributions and create better lives for themselves. EDITOR ‌WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I DREAMED ABOUT BEING A TRAVEL WRITER. I wanted to see the world, partake in new adventures, try new foods and share the breathtaking beauty of our world with others. Now, though, I couldn’t imagine living out of a suitcase, constantly on the road without my handsome husband and baby boy. However, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to vicariously live through our lovely contributing writer Alice Handelman. On p. 72, Handelman takes readers on a journey through the magical land of Norway. Handelman and her husband, Howard, enjoyed the expedition this summer and graciously shared details on things to see and experience while in Norway. Although Norway wasn’t previously on my long list of places to see, it certainly is now. Between seeing the northern lights, experiencing breathtaking views from the mountains and getting to enjoy king crab freshly caught right before your eyes, I’m ready to pack my suitcase. We hope that you enjoy learning about this lovely country, its many rich offerings, and that it maybe even inspires your own getaway in the future. Also in this week’s edition, we hope you enjoy learning about Mademan Design – a product of architect, builder and St. Louis native Nick Adams. Starting on p. 24, LN digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter shares Adams’ inspiration for creating modern residences with energy-efficient options in his hometown. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

resh beginnings are hard to come by, especially when you have served time and face the prospect of rejoining society. Concordance Academy understands this challenge and assists in navigating this difficult terrain, so former inmates can successfully reintegrate and become productive members of their communities. To date, the Academy has served more than 300 participants. “We have an integrated, holistic program that is evidence-based and provides participants with most of what they need to be successful,” says Dr. Roderick Nunn, EVP of education and employment. “You don’t have to think hard about the impact that mass incarceration is having on our nation and our community – where we live, work and raise families.” Tamara Reavis divides her time between the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center, and the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center for men. As a pathways specialist, she guides participants through Concordance Academy’s pre-release and post-release process by leading one-on-one and group sessions. “I have the opportunity to support our participants through a wide range of services,” says Reavis. “We look at different types of job skills and talk about the support they will have when they go back to work. I teach and model career readiness skills in prison and build on those skills at the Academy, making sure they are ready to succeed in their jobs.

As of June 30 of this year, eight of nine participants have completed the simulation, with all eight landing a job. Seven participants still retain those jobs, which marks a promising start for this initiative. This fall, the Academy’s biggest fundraiser, the Hallow’s Eve Ball, promises a spectacular celebration on Oct. 20 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. The festive event will spotlight the achievements of Academy participants and those who continue to believe in them. Nunn notes that participants who stay diligent in their ongoing efforts are the ones who find the most success – but not without support. “You can’t erase a lifetime of bad habits in just a few months,” he says. “It is a blessing to come to work every day in this space, and to participate in an innovative, high-impact model that stays with the participants through their alumni phase. fter designer Gigi Lombrano helped her clients with their St. Louis home, they brought her on yet again to help with design services when they moved. The pictured space, though beautiful externally, was renovated from the inside out in a gut remodel job. The fireplace had been at one end of the room, and the clients decided to move it to the other end. This entailed leveling out the ceiling and ripping out the Mexican tiling that had been the flooring. “Really just getting the bones of the space first was so integral to the project,” Lombrano says. “We took advantage of the views and natural light.” As far as inspirations for the space go, Lombrano says she and her clients drew more from the feeling they wanted to evoke from the space. “We wanted it to feel warm – not overly modern,” she says. “But cleanliness and calmness were important.”

From modern residential homes to modular construction and energy-efficient options, Nick Adams of Mademan Design has opened the door to daring design in St. Louis.

N

ick Adams is on a mission to push the design envelope in St. Louis. The native St. Louisan has followed a lifelong passion for architecture and fabrication all over the country before landing back in his hometown – where he started his own company, Mademan Design. Adams went to the University of Kansas, where his master’s program, Studio 804, turned into “one of the defining characteristics of my life.” During the program, Adams and 21 other students designed a house during their first semester. During the second semester, they built the home they’d designed: a modular home constructed in a warehouse in Lawrence, Kansas. “We trucked in seven modules to Kansas City,” Adams recalls. “Most architects [in school] are doing watercolor and balsam wood models. We were actually hammering two-by-fours together.” For some students, Studio 804 pushed them away from fabrication and architecture. But others, like Adams, were drawn to the design-build process even more. When he finished school, he came back to St. Louis and worked for SPACE Architecture + Design for five years. Adams became restless, though, and had what he calls a “quarter-life crisis.” He loaded up his car and traveled westward to every major city he could see himself eventually moving to. Although the trip didn’t end in his moving, Adams discovered something important: He wanted to – and would – start his own company. “If I started my own company, I could do work I felt was impactful,” he says. “I figured the best chance of success of pulling that off was if I came back to St. Louis, where I had a network of people.” On returning to St. Louis, he picked up part-time work for SPACE again while he helped renovate a co-worker’s Tower Grove house. “It was a mess, but it was great,” he says. “That started Mademan, though it wasn’t Mademan at that point. It was me trying to figure out how to generate work.” His friend’s mother had a quartet of four-family homes that needed kitchens and bathrooms redone, so Adams took on those projects. Then, he left SPACE and worked for UIC/CDO for a few months before deciding it was time to commit to his own small client base full time.

an inside look of the Richmond Heights house.

When he turned his focus to what would become Mademan, all of Adams’ jobs were fabrication. Through a former SPACE co-worker, Adams learned about a workstation project at Mackey Mitchell Architects and put in a bid. He won the bid, opening up the door for other opportunities. He took on small furniture projects while studying for the Architect Registration Examination – needed to earn an architect license – and finally officially founded Mademan in early 2013. Through another lead, Adams secured his first substantial residential project, a modern Richmond Heights house. “That project was a true labor of love,” he says. “These days, it probably takes us 200 hours to finish a residential project. This one was 450.” The modern home took months of deliberation with the municipality, along with having to secure a new general contractor partway through the process. After editing $100,000 out of the initial general contractor’s budget, Adams and his small team created a sleek, modern, energyefficient home that satisfied the clients’ wish list and budget. “When it got complete, it opened up so many doors for us,” Adams says. A passionate traveler, Adams relates seeing modern homebuilding all over the country, but hardly any of it here in St. Louis. “When you travel outside of St. Louis, it’s easy to recognize how huge of an opportunity there is for some stuff out of the ordinary,” he says. “A lot of people looked at [the Richmond Heights project] and thought, ‘What a deviation!’ But this is the first step into making some awareness of doing modern architecture in a way that suits our city.” Since then, the company has worked on projects of all shapes and sizes: from steel fabrication and design for Blueprint Coffee to cabinets for The Collective to a home at Dry Fork. Currently, Mademan is in the process of constructing two houses that are “kickass.” Adams and his team are also putting finishing touches on their work for Yellowbelly, a new restaurant project from the owners of Retreat Gastropub. (“We just need to deliver some steel, and it’s basically done.”) Overall, Adams and his team want to continue to push the envelope and bring an architectural style that St. Louis doesn’t currently have. “I didn’t start [Mademan] to find ourselves in the middle of the design world in terms of style,” he says. Adams also hopes St. Louisans consider the option of modular construction: He’s pushing to change the delivery system of architecture and build big parts of houses under a roof before trucking them to a site, which ends up being more affordable. Aside from a passion for modular and modern design, Adams is also a proponent for energy-efficient options. “The Midwest is one of the hardest places to pull that off because of the hot, humid summer and the cold, dry winters,” he says. “It’s always an added cost for sustainable features. It’s more insulation, higher-efficiency furnaces, forced-air units, solar panels and geothermal. We’ve had success pushing the envelope in terms of design, but I’m hopeful to start implementing more sustainable features into those modern designs.” Mademan Design, 4145 Papin St., St. Louis, 314-971-0950, mademandesign.com

A long, pea gravel drive and inviting front terrace lead you into the manor house, which boasts five bedrooms, six full and three halfbathrooms. and True brands. Complete with two center islands and an adjoining butler’s pantry, the space makes meal prep a cinch. After the plates have been cleared, bring guests downstairs for drinks, conversation, and maybe even a game or two. The finished lower level proves ideal for entertaining, with family and recreation rooms. Offer guests libations from the wine cellar, which is located behind a full bar. Or perhaps you’d prefer to continue the party outside? The lush formal gardens on the property’s eastern terrace are a horticulturist’s delight, and lead into the serene pool and pool house area. A covered, poolside dining area makes for a striking place to indulge in an after-hours aperitif. Once the guests have left – or settled in for an overnight stay in the property’s carriage house – retire upstairs to the sumptuous master suite, which features updated, his-and-her baths and dressing rooms. When you’ve enlisted the help of The Ryan Tradition to make “The Woodlands” your kingdom, you’ll surely sleep like a dream. elly Peck’s deep appreciation for art carries over to her closet. That’s what makes her fashion as unique and unexpected as the arts and cultural events she carefully curates as the vice president of the St. Louis-based artist and exhibition agency Barrett Barrera Projects. “I view [fashion] designers as artists,” she says. “I am interested in those that experiment, take risks and have an eye for smart design.” Peck follows a number of innovative international “artists” for fashion inspiration: Japanese designer Yoshikazu Yamagata’s artistry-based conceptual label, written afterwards, and more wearable line, written by; Belgian designer Dries van Noten’s carefully balanced colors and patterns depicting globalism; and Japanese luxury brand Sacai’s experimental fabrics and silhouettes. “[Sacai] also has a sporty feel that works well with my lifestyle: balancing work with young children,” Peck notes. For local style inspiration, Peck frequents SKIF International, a boutique carrying St. Louis artists’ knitwear and silk tunics. “The silk tunics are incredibly versatile – they can be layered with knits or worn very simply,” she says. In her daily life, Peck wears well-crafted clothing and accessories that transition between work and home. “I like to be comfortable, and I love innovative pieces with unique details,” she explains. “So black FRAME jeans with Golden Goose sneakers and a sweater or blouse with an interesting pattern or graphic is my most immediate go-to … [and] I tend to mix and match small, simple earring studs in my day-to-day dress.” And when it comes to special occasions, the artsy fashionista reaches for a rare combination: heels with low ankle socks. “I just bought this great pink metallic pair of socks that I plan to wear with high white wedges for a night out,” she says. “Small accessories like socks can make a dress I’ve worn 1,000 times seem new.” Peck also is careful to point out that a closet full of designer labels doesn’t make a fashionable woman. “Some of the most stylish people I know have very simple wardrobes that work across occasions and are curated in very thoughtful ways,” she notes. Rather than buying into trends, Peck recommends investing in pieces that collectively create a personal style – and caring for those special selections, so they

last. “I am very patient about how I shop,” she explains. “Typically, I create multiple online wish lists with pieces that catch my eye. I revisit those and edit out which doesn’t hold my interest across time. For me, the hunt is part of the fun, and I like knowing that every purchase was a considered one.” On the other hand, if Peck feels connected to a particular piece that cannot be easily sourced, she may splurge. “Recently, I found an amazing Xiao Li tulle

jacket, and it was only at one retailer in one size,” she recalls. “Ultimately, it was worth purchasing because I know it’s very limited and is something I can wear multiple ways for many years.” Above all, Peck lets her work in the arts influence the evolution of her style. “I am surrounded by incredibly creative people … [and] privileged to work in an environment driven by experimentation, and that extends to my fashion choices.”

Bol Bold d an Bespoke By Bryan A. Hollerbach Photos by Sarah Conroy

As his high-end mensweAr compAny moves to the LAdue/cLAyton juncture, A Long-serving LocAL hAberdAsher refLects on his trAde.

“R

eal style is never a matter of right or wrong,” G. Bruce Boyer observes in True Style, his delightful 2015 primer on the history and principles of classic menswear. “It’s a matter of being yourself. On purpose.” In all likelihood, longtime professional haberdasher David R. Corbitt would appreciate that observation – were he not still refining the relocation of Bespoke Apparel, the concierge custom clothier which he founded in 1989 in Atlanta and which he nowadays operates with his daughter, Danielle. Corbitt, a graying but still sprightly gentleman, briefly and amusingly explains the breakdown in labor at the haberdashery between his daughter and him: “Dani has spent the last five years apprenticing every aspect of the biz. She’s proficient in all things Bespoke. Her major focus is obtaining a new client base, retaining them as she builds – sales. Her subfocus includes social media, event planning and biz strategy. I basically handle all things everything.” Ah, “all things everything.” Assistance with that whimsical phrase, in context, comes from Bespoke Menswear: Tailoring for Gentlemen, Bernhard Roetzel’s 2014 disquisition on the topic, which loosely defines it as “those garments that a tailor or shirtmaker creates as a oneoff piece from a custom-made pattern – by hand, of course, at least for the most important parts of a garment.” Corbitt senior continues by explaining the relocation to Clayton’s western edge, which took effect when Bespoke Apparel opened its doors at 8500 Maryland Ave. on Aug. 1. The expiration of their previous Town and Country lease prompted his and his daughter’s search for a new site. “We walked the streets of downtown [Clayton] hoping to find the perfect location,” Corbitt says. “We’re full-service concierge custom clothiers – a mouthful – which means we need a location that isn’t traditional retail. We must be able to meet our clients in their office or home, as well as a high-end showroom. “Enter The Barton [the new mixed-use development Bespoke Apparel now occupies]. … I called and found out the opportunity and thought it was a great fit for us.” Corbitt also briefly contrasts the new location with Bespoke Apparel’s prior digs at 169 Lamp & Lantern Village. “The old space was a more traditional retail [space] with retail hours,” he says. “It made it hard to truly be of service to our clients all around the city and country when we both were tied down to being at the store.

52

august 31, 2018 | LadueNews.com

The new location offers us the opportunity to set appointments most convenient for our clients and move around the city better.” Corbitt similarly contrasts the metro area with Georgia’s capital, from which he and his family relocated in 2004 – and reflects on variances within the metro area. “I still travel to Atlanta several times a year, assisting clients,” he relates, noting that its booming population often sparked massive traffic jams – which themselves inspired his innovative haberdashery. “Out of this situation, I developed the ‘concierge clothier’ concept, where I would bring the store to the client. He wouldn’t have to lift a finger and weather the traffic jam. That was my job. “Coming to St. Louis, I haven’t had to endure the insane travel times around the city [of Atlanta]. … The thing I did notice was the [Interstate] 270 divide as well as the Delmar [Boulevard] divide. I have clients across every divide and would absolutely love to see these divides fade away into the history books.” Corbitt continues by addressing how “cultural and social norms have had tremendous effects on menswear over the decades. One major trend has been the transformation of the suit wearer. “Back in the day, a client would buy six suits and 12 new shirts and a boatload of ties and absolutely no sport coats! Over the years, that’s evolved into a couple of suits and dress shirts and several sport coats and pants to round out his wardrobe.” He also emphasizes the growing importance of expert advice and attention in menswear. “It used to be dark suits, white shirts and solid ties,” Corbitt says. “Today, a man must navigate through an ever-widening selection of colors, fabric textures, as well as fabric combinations. ‘What are the dos and don’ts?’ is a constant question I hear from men.” Ultimately, Corbitt muses on how Bespoke Apparel differs from both traditional brick-and-mortar menswear stores and online purveyors, which, he says, “must be trendy, cool, always changing their inventory in order to stay relevant. They make money in their number of turns of inventory; therefore, they want their customers constantly chasing the latest and greatest in hot fashion. … “At Bespoke, in many ways, the exact opposite approach is taken. One way to think about it is in the stark difference between style and fashion. Fashion comes and goes like late-afternoon summer thunderstorms across the metro area, while style is that constant in your life that defines you as a person. … Your style will evolve and grow as we do as people, and yet, there’s a strong foundation. We don’t need to chase fashion – we need to express our individual style.” Corbitt continues by detailing how he serves as a haberdasher. “When I work

with a client, I spend time getting to know him and his hopes and aspirations, his likes and dislikes, his vision for himself,” he says. … “After getting to know my client, I’ll spend hours putting together outfit ideas which will flow best with him and his needs. The idea is to strike a definite balance and harmony in his wardrobe. “My goal for every client is for him to feel so secure in his wardrobe that every time he walks into his closet, no matter where he’s going to that day, who he’s meeting and what’s demanded of him, he walks out of his closet feeling perfectly attired. Because the old saying is very true today that ‘when you look good, you feel good.’ “I like to add that by feeling good, your performance skyrockets! Test out my theory to see if I’m right. Walk into your closet, and dress your absolute best – and then, as you move through your day, be alert to compliments coming your way. Ask yourself how they made you feel when you received them.” Almost sheepishly, Corbitt adds, “Sorry – I could talk for days and days about these ideas.” Bespoke Apparel, 8500 Maryland Ave., No. 306, St. Louis, 636-707-1177, thebespokeapparel.com

Heavyweight!

“Bespoke is simply the greatest!” That exclamation numbers among the testimonials posted to the website of Bespoke Apparel, the professional haberdashery operated by the father-and-daughter team of David R. and Danielle Corbitt, and in context, it constitutes quite a compliment, given the identity of its source: the nonpareil 20th-century pugilistic powerhouse nicknamed “the Greatest,” Muhammad Ali. Corbitt père briefly reminisces about his relationship with Ali, which lasted nearly two decades. “Ali was a fantastic human being,” he says. “He was sincere and observant. Very intelligent! Nothing missed his attention. When he handed out autographs in a hotel lobby, he’d stay there until everyone received one and a hug. … “On many of my visits over the years [to serve Ali’s clothier needs], we talked about every subject possible – religion, politics, humanity, sports and so forth. You name it, we covered it.” Corbitt recalls that his first fitting with Ali took place at the 1994 Super Bowl in Atlanta. “I helped him into his new outfit to make sure everything fit properly,” he says. “Lonnie [Ali’s fourth and final wife] then told him to change back into his sweats so they could go catch their flight. He told her, ‘No, I’m too pretty!’ in that very unique Louisville drawl and proceeded to leave the room. “We worked together for almost 20 years. I have to say his mind was always sharp as a tack even when he was unable to verbally communicate.”

eturning from summer laziness to scholastic frenzy can create a mix of emotions for any student. Although many kids feel happy to see friends they haven’t seen since spring and share summer stories, many also miss low-stress days and late-morning slumber. A few well-timed conversations and parental support, though, can help your child manage such conflicting emotions while setting the stage for academic and personal success. Such success starts with setting proper goals. Ask your children what they want to accomplish in the new school year. Goals should focus on personal fulfillment rather than a parental obligation, by the way, because internal desire builds intrinsic motivation – a key quality for any successful student. Creating a proper goal, though, can be difficult, as many kids tend to overreach or construct only vague objectives. Parents should assist their kids by assessing the realism and measurability of their academic plan. For instance, if your child says he or she plans to make all A’s, that might prove unreasonable if your teen doesn’t typically earn A’s. Instead, redirect your kid to focus on a more definite strategy, such as conferring with an English teacher about compositions to become a better writer. Also, help your student to balance academics, extracurricular activities and free time. Many kids want to do it all, which creates stress as they struggle with meeting classroom demands and after-school requirements. Others disengage, often resulting in adolescent lethargy and a lack of motivation. Parents should establish realistic grade expectations while encouraging participation in at least one activity. Upfront conversations about managing homework, school activities and free time should set the tone for a realistic schedule. A given student may also find it challenging to understand that the school day starts when the alarm clock rings and ends when his or her head hits the pillow. Efficient mornings that allow time for a healthy breakfast and on-time school arrival create a ready-to-learn brain, and conscious thoughts about after-school study time allow students to maximize their potential. Commit to a plan, and schedule accordingly. Consistency should ensure that responsibilities get met. September also makes a great time for parents to renew their own scholastic commitments. If you don’t already, volunteer for a couple of school-related events, and make sure to attend all teacher conferences. These connections should provide valuable insights into how your child’s school operates and facilitate a trusting domestic and scholastic relationship. Teachers feel no qualms about calling involved parents, not only about minor “issues” but also about personal triumphs. Families that set a positive school tone also are building a strong foundation for responsible decision-making. Make this fall a new beginning, and create long-lasting resolutions. Good grades always remain a goal, but developing quality character and a positive attitude can bring even greater rewards.

hose entering their senior year of high school should begin the process of college application essays. That one common application essay, approximately 650 words in length, is essential and can oftentimes prove difficult. There are typically seven prompts to choose from, which are meant as guidelines to keep you from writing about how much you love your cat. If you were J.D. Salinger or Toni Morrison, you might be able to pull off that topic, but most young writers cannot. These prompts ideally will assist with establishing potentially who you might be as a citizen of the world. Topics typically focus on the future and how you will approach it – because you’ll be doing that on the college administrators’ turf, the campus. For many, this is the first time they may have thought about such a question. Here’s how to approach this situation. The future has a lot to do with past accomplishments. Are you a tennis player, a voracious reader, a technical theater director? Each leads to possibly a different major – perhaps in sports management, English or engineering – so tell the administrators the way you lean. Remember, your answer doesn’t have to be permanent. Lots of students go to college undecided. Whatever you write, colleges simply want to see a glimpse of your human side. Empathy, according to many recent citations in major media, will be a keyword during your career because so far, robots and automation can’t provide that. It’s only human. So if you went to Guatemala or built a Habitat for Humanity house, what did you learn from it – the process, teamwork, perseverance and, most of all, the needs of the people living there? Do not underestimate the human factor. I have some clients who, when I ask them about community service, say, “Oh, yes, I have that!” as if they bought it somewhere. Then, in several cases, they continue, “We made bologna sandwiches in homeroom for the homeless.” Then I ask them, “What did you do with the sandwiches?” “Oh, we gave them to the man who comes in.” “What did the man do with them?” I respond. “He took them down there to the homeless.” “To the city?” “Yeah, probably.” Further conversations with multiple students over almost 20 years now have convinced me the city is, to some young people, an anonymous pit somewhere east of Skinker yet not Forest Park or the Cardinals’ ballpark. Comments like these, of course, I intercept and explain why they don’t work. Serving one’s community must reflect genuine care in today’s competitive college application environment. A truly good college application essay answers not only who you are but also why you are yourself. You don’t have to have all of that figured out yet, but the essay requires deep thinking and serious effort. Answering the why is the most difficult part in any situation, yet produces the best reflection of who you are now and who you may become. Then, using visual examples and positive points to prove what you say is true is essential to producing an essay that offers you your best chance.

Book Corner

By Alecia Humphreys

ue McCarthy is often welcomed into some of the most luxurious, beautiful closets in the world to purchase pieces for her multimillion-dollar resale boutique, The Vault Luxury Resale. However, there was a point in McCarthy’s life when she had neither a closet nor even a home to call her own. “We found ourselves homeless often through circumstances,” McCarthy says. “We didn’t believe in taking charity from other people, so if you didn’t have any food, you just didn’t eat, and that’s all there was to it.” This life experience, though, is what McCarthy believes helped shape who she is today and what also helped inspire her first book: Good, Better, Best – the rags-to-riches story of the upscale resale queen. “When I say it’s a story of somebody who turned every obstacle into an opportunity, absolutely,” McCarthy says. “I always knew that whatever I did, I would have to be good at it. The name of the book, Good, Better, Best … that was important to me. I wrote that from the time I was a child.”

People won’t remember what you said, but how you make them feel, and that is what I hope people will get from the book – that anything is possible, and just persevere. Good, Better, Best takes readers not only on McCarthy’s journey to founding The Vault Luxury Resale but also behind the scenes of the luxury resale world and into the closets of some of the world’s most stylish women. “After our television show [the defunct Esquire Network’s Resale Royalty], people wanted more of the closets, and so I wrote about some of the closets,” McCarthy says. “We can do 50 closets, and 40 of them are just we go in for an hour, we get the stuff, we pay them, they are happy, we leave. But then you come to

the ones … It’s not the stuff that you get, but it’s the story in the closet. … You invite people into your home, into your living room, into your kitchen, but rarely does anyone get to go into anyone’s closet. That is a very personal space, and we literally open the curtains to that personal, personal experience. You don’t think about it, but that is the truth.” Although McCarthy takes great pride in sharing an inside glimpse into the array of closets, she truly hopes readers will put her book down feeling empowered. “I hope they learn that anything is possible,” she says. “People won’t remember what you said, but how you make them feel, and that is what I hope people will get from the book – that anything is possible, and just persevere. And if you always do the right thing, it comes back to you tenfold.”

Splitting the

B e

O

nce couples say, “I do,” they begin building their lives together. Although most people who speak those two beloved words have sincere intentions of remaining together forever, eternity may not always be the outcome. That’s when the experts come in – helping you decipher what’s yours and what’s your soon-tobe ex-spouse’s. According to Michelle Spirn of Spirn Family Law, a divorce lawyer’s first task is to characterize property as either marital or nonmarital, assuming a prenuptial agreement isn’t already in place. “Generally speaking, a marital asset is property that was acquired during the marriage, regardless of whose name is on a title or deed,” Spirn says. “The court only has jurisdiction to divide property that is marital; separate, nonmarital property, which was gifted to, inherited or owned by one of the spouses prior to the marriage, is set apart to the owner of that property.” Property, in the context of divorce, according to Spirn, includes all assets owned by either spouse or both spouses. Such assets can include real estate, cars, bank and security accounts, retirement assets and personal property like furniture, life insurance policies with a cash value, business interests and even – believe it or not – furry friends. Missouri is categorized as an equitable distribution state. However, equitable doesn’t always mean equal – rather, what is fair given the particular facts in any given case. According to Missouri state law, the following factors are considered when dividing marital property: the economic circumstances of each spouse, the contribution of each spouse to the acquisition of marital property, the value of the nonmarital property of each spouse, the conduct of both parties during the marriage and the custodial arrangements for minor children. “A judge can take certain things into account when dividing assets and debts, including marital misconduct and issues of separate property,” says Allison Schreiber Lee of Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal. “For example, if somebody has $5 million of separate property and they only have $100,000 of marital assets, there is a chance that the judge will not divide things 50-50 because one spouse has significantly more separate property than the other. “As far as misconduct goes, that is a little bit harder to prove, and it depends on really each judge. But generally speaking, if you can prove misconduct – like there is a dissipation of marital assets – so for example, if someone gambles away $500,000 of marital assets, judges will typically take that into account. It may not be dollar-for-dollar that you would give that back to the other spouse, but there is typically some kind of accounting for that kind of misconduct. “As far as having an affair goes, that is a little more difficult. It depends on how long there has been an affair. It

Breaking up is hard to do, yes – but breaking up can be even harder without adequate knowledge of legal niceties.

depends on if there was money spent on the affair. It depends on the effect of the affair on the marital estate. It’s not simply that just because you had an affair it’s not 50-50. Some judges do think that’s the case – that they will change it simply because of an affair. Some judges will not. So it really can be judge-specific.” Contingent on the cooperation of both parties, a division of assets can be quick or rather lengthy. “Depending on the case, the division of property and debt can sometimes be resolved by the parties quickly and easily,” Spirn says. “And other times [it] is the center of the parties’ dispute and requires the judge to rule after a trial. In general, most cases in St. Louis County are resolved within a year of the initial filing for divorce.” Spirn even notes that either party can either request to be awarded certain assets or waive the right to receive certain assets. “It’s just important to remember that the division of property, once complete, is final,” she says. “It can’t be modified by the court.” Schreiber Lee recommends that anyone who even has an inkling that a divorce is in his or her future begin discussions with an attorney. “A lot of times, when people are shocked with a divorce, they are sort of numb, and they say things or do things that they would later regret,” Schreiber Lee says. “So I always tell people, go meet with a lawyer; talk to somebody; get [his or her] input; figure out what, if any, planning you need to do [and] what do you need to do to protect yourself.” Spirn mirrors Schreiber Lee’s sentiments. “As always, knowledge is power,” Spirn says. “I always recommend that my clients make a list of all the property and debt they know of, regardless of how it is titled, and, if possible, obtain documents relating to the assets – for example, the closing statement from a real estate purchase or the loan statement from a mortgage. If an asset was owned prior to the marriage or was received as a gift, it may be necessary to prove the date of purchase.” Although there are certainly an array of factors that can play into each and every divorce, there are experts available who will say, “I do,” to helping you move forward. llison Schreiber Lee, a family law attorney at Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C., understands the complicated nature of family and the legal matters that can surround them, including divorces, paternity action, motions to modify, temporary restraining orders and orders of protection. “I am a child of parents who had a contentious divorce,” she shares. “I understand the emotions kids can go through when their parents are divorcing. I [also] understand financial hardships and concerns that parents go through, having witnessed issues between my parents.” Schreiber Lee has not only seen the ugly side of divorce. The attorney knows firsthand how a marriage can end amicably. “I’m a single mom,” she adds. “My ex-husband and I get along very well. [I know] how divorces can go, if people can put away their own hurt and prioritize the children first.” Schreiber Lee names her time spent as a former sex crimes and child abuse prosecutor as one of the most rewarding periods of her career. She claims some of her best work came out of that tough climate. “The claims of abuse, I think, have risen with internet access,” she speculates. “It becomes harder to find what’s true and what’s not. I can guide people on both sides…People whose children have been victims and people who have been accused [of victimizing].” Able to navigate the gray areas often found in legal matters, Schreiber Lee’s unique sympathy for clients makes her services especially valuable. “Having an attorney you can trust is important,” she emphasizes. “It is our job to do what is in your best interest. If somebody has a ‘scorched earth’ [approach to their divorce], I help them to step back and see that they will likely have interactions beyond [the divorce settlement], especially if the clients have small children.” She sets herself apart from other lawyers not only because of her candid approach, but also for her unwavering commitment to being there when clients need her most. “In emergencies, people get my cell number,” says Schreiber Lee. “I help by trying to find the best way to keep them and their children safe. At the law firm of Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C., we tend to be some of the most responsive family law attorneys in St. Louis.” With her wealth of experience and relatability, Schreiber Lee continues to be a top choice for a family lawyer.

arnivore – a family-owned and -operated steakhouse in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis – has been featuring flamegrilled steaks, a menu of otherwise Italian-inflected fare and a full bar with handcrafted cocktails since its May soft opening. The restaurant comes from longtime friends Joe Smugala and Mike Lutker, with their wives, Kerri Smugala and Casie Lutker. Both of the couples have roots in the neighborhood. Casie Lutker’s great-uncle was famed former resident and sports icon Yogi Berra, for example, and the Smugalas also own J. Smugs GastroPit, which debuted on The Hill last year. Carnivore fills the nearly 4,000 square feet previously occupied by Mona’s, An American-Italian

Joint, with 80 seats in the dining area, 40 by the bar and 30 more on an outdoor patio. The interior features an industrial feel, with neutral colors and newly installed lighting. A mural of The Hill’s markets and restaurants by artist Wendy Weller of House of Paint & Design provides a colorful focal point in Carnivore. “We’re really steak-centered – hence the name – and that’s what we focus on and take pride in,” Joe Smugala says. “We also have a little bit of Italian flair. Most restaurants on The Hill have a steak, but we wanted to really focus on it well. That’s why we brought this concept here.” Mike Lutker, who previously ran the kitchen at the nearby Gian-Tony’s Ristorante for seven years, serves as head chef at Carnivore. “A lot of the food here is what we cook at home,” he says. “We brought it over

By Mabel Suen and made it on a larger scale, as fresh as can be. Seeing the butter melting on your steak when it comes to your table is so mouthwatering and appealing. The juiciness and flavor of the steak is ridiculous.” Steak cuts, hand-selected from PFG Middendorf and seasoned with a house-made “steak sprinkle” seasoning, include filet mignon, top sirloin, strip steak and the most popular pick so far, a 14-ounce rib-eye. Optional additional toppings include mushrooms, shrimp and a signature selection of compound butters: garlic and herb, blue cheese, red wine reduction, Worcestershire-chive and garlic-Parmesan. Beyond steaks, Carnivore’s menu includes a variety of appetizers, other entrées, pastas and sides. Highlights include arancini, risotto balls stuffed with Provel and served with meat sauce and Parmesan; a

flatbread modiga with steak or chicken, olive oil, Provel, prosciutto, mushrooms and modiga sauce; and, amusingly, the Herbivore salad with romaine, baby spinach, cucumber, pimentos, green onions, Provel, feta, Italian dressing and pepperoncini. Carnivore’s bar features a selection of wine, beer and cocktails, among them a cucumber martini, a blackberry Mojito, a Chambord Manhattan and the Strawberry Cucumber Cooler – Pearl cucumber vodka, muddled strawberries and mint, simple syrup, lemonade and club soda. The restaurant’s brunch menu, meanwhile, features such items as avocado toast; hash with potatoes, peppers, onions, a six-ounce steak and a fried egg; spicy scrambled eggs with spinach, ham and Thai chili; and the Hangover Helper burger, topped with tomato, avocado, cheddar, bacon and a fried egg. A bloody mary and mimosa bar also is available. All in all, a visit to Carnivore should put anyone in the proper frame of mind to enjoy Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit from Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble.

‌Story:  An unsmiling Valet escorts Garcin into a room in hell. Garcin has certainly expected something different. Decorating it is old, 19th-century-style furniture consisting of an ottoman, a sofa, a chair and a Persian rug on a wooden floor, along with a bricked-up fireplace and an immovable statue on the mantel. Moreover, it lacks any perceptible devices of torture, which surprises Garcin. The Valet offers no clues except to say that she reports to a relative, a senior valet in the hallway. She then leaves and returns with Inès, another damned soul, followed by a third one named Estelle. The Valet departs and the three “newbies” begin to talk to one another in a somewhat guarded fashion. Although Garcin and Estelle express surprise about occupying hell, Inès observes that all three landed there because each did something terrible in life and that they might as well admit their sins. Garcin identifies himself as a journalist vilified as a coward during the war for being a pacifist, while Estelle claims to have been an innocent young woman who married an older, wealthy man who would take care of her. Inès scoffs at both and says that each of the three is, in reality, the torturer of the other two – and that they’d better get used to that notion. Inès feels attracted to Estelle, who in turn flirts provocatively with Garcin, who admits no interest in either of them. Gradually, as they grate on one another’s nerves, Garcin reveals that he cheated on his wife, mistreating her badly, and that she died while he was imprisoned. Inès states that she seduced the wife of her cousin, destroying his marriage, while Estelle finally admits to having had an affair with a young man who impregnated her and then killed himself after she murdered their baby. The revelations bring no relief to any of them, however, because all three seem trapped by their own inertia. When Garcin somehow manages to open the door to the hallway, which previously had been locked, he can’t bring himself to walk through it, nor can the two women. Welcome to their shabby little room, where hell “is other people.” Highlights:  Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble/ SATE Ensemble Theatre continues its “Season of Entrapment” with an intriguing presentation of existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sartre’s landmark drama of the mid-20th century. Director Bess Moynihan gets handsome performances from her players, who keep the audience involved in the travails of three wayward souls lost in eternal damnation. Other Info:  SATE utilizes a new translation by Alyssa Ward in its one-act, 90-minute rendition and includes an interesting analysis of the work by dramaturge Andrea Robb in its program notes. The performance takes place on a nifty set designed by Moynihan, which cleverly includes a “No Exit” sign to the side of the stage and strategically places

pieces of furniture at far ends of the performing area to underscore the emotional distance between characters. Moynihan addresses the chasm between the characters by frequently positioning them at opposite ends of the stage. Sarah Morris commands the stage as Inès, insinuating herself into the wretched, tormented souls of the other two inhabitants of the chamber. She shows Inès as manipulative, cynical and caustic, yet succumbing ultimately to the relentless anguish of her eternity. Her Inès expertly mocks Garcin with contemptuous remarks or sneering glances and cleverly wears down Estelle as the latter’s self-appointed “mirror,” only to be ultimately repudiated. Rachel Tibbetts conveys the “damaged damsel” demeanor of Estelle, adeptly showing how her character’s true colors emerge to reveal a shockingly self-absorbed spirit. As Garcin, Shane Signorino depicts the arrogance of a man who frantically wants to shed the “coward” label and implores the women to bolster his eroded self-image in desperate and futile fashion. Katy Keating completes the quartet in a fine performance as the menacing, venal Valet, who enjoys setting up the latest denizens of hell for eternal wailing and gnashing of teeth, existentialist style. Sartre and other writers including Albert Camus, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and Søren Kierkegaard wrote about the complexities of life from the existential point of the human subject as the beginning of philosophical thinking, albeit from religious, agnostic or atheistic perspectives. SATE’s compelling presentation of No Exit invites audience members to consider how their own views align with such profound thinkers.

‌Through Sept. 9

The Saint Louis Art Museum was among the first North American art museums to share the epic story of “one of the greatest finds in the history of underwater archaeology, a story that revealed two lost cities of ancient Egypt submerged under the Mediterranean Sea for more than 1,000 years,” according to the Forest Park landmark’s website. See these breathtaking findings in the exhibition “SUNKEN CITIES: EGYPT’S LOST WORLDS” in its final week or so at the museum. Times and ticket prices vary. slam.org.

Fri., Sept. 7

All aboard the Hogwarts Express – only you needn’t worry about finding the 9¾ platform. Join the Saint Louis Science Center in St. Louis’ Kings Oak neighborhood as it transforms into the wizarding world of J.K. Rowlings’ Harry Potter as part of the center’s FIRST FRIDAYS series. Attendees can participate in a magical photo op with a living portrait from Hogwarts, create a wand or broomstick at the Wizard Workshop and try on the invisibility cloak. Guest speaker and self-described “Harry Potter freak” Kayla Davis also makes a special presentation on the “controversies surrounding the series in the real world, as well as those in the wizarding world, as presented in the books and movies,” according to the center’s website. Such a magical evening, of course, wouldn’t be complete without OMNIMAX offerings in the form of two feature-length documentaries devoted to Harry Potter. 6 to 10 p.m. Some pricing applies. slsc.org.

Fri., Sept. 7, through Sun., Sept. 9

The art is certainly at the heart of the SAINT LOUIS ART FAIR. The organization behind the Clayton fair – which seeks as its goal to “enrich the community by bringing together people of all backgrounds to celebrate the arts,” according to its Facebook page – hosts more than 180 outdoor showcases in its 25th year. Attendees can meet the artists, learn what inspired their works and, of course, browse and purchase works. Pieces include mediums from ceramics to jewelry to printmaking, sculpture and more. Times vary. Free. saintlouisartfair.com.

Sun., Sept. 9

Join Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri, for a fun-filled day celebrating the relationship between dogs and trucks at the second annual TRUCKS & TAILS event. Attendees can jump inside more than 20 different vehicles, meet the hardworking dogs that usually accompany them, ride a trackless train and enjoy food trucks, animal balloons, games and more. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free; $5 parking. purina.com.

Sat., Sept. 8

The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum in Kirkwood has a farm, E-I-E-I-O. Although a slight remix of the childhood favorite, that opening perfectly fits The Magic House’s scheduled FALL FARM FESTIVAL. Attendees can meet local farmers to learn about where their food comes from, while also getting to check out a real tractor, participate in a variety of agricultural activities and even frolic with bona fide farm friends. 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Free with museum admission. magichouse.org.

Voyage of the

Midnight

Sun By Alice Handelman | Photos by Howard and Alice Handelman

The northern lights are just the tip of the fjord of the natural beauty, breathtaking sights and magical splendors in Norway.

M

agical Norway is home to long, graceful waterfalls, a plethora of fresh fish, majestic mountains still covered with last winter’s snow, beautiful fjords formed by glaciers eons ago and trolls that bring good luck. A country with a population of 5.2 million, it’s the happiest place in the world, according to the 2017 World Happiness Report produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, a global initiative launched by the United Nations. Known for its northern lights (aurora borealis), midnight sun and being the inspiration for the movie Frozen, it should be at the top of every traveler’s bucket list. A summer cruise on Holland America Line (HAL) on the Koningsdam was the main source of transportation for my husband and me for two weeks as we explored breathtaking sights. We learned the cultural life of a land that we never dreamed of seeing, with the convenience of not having to pack and unpack luggage in a port-intensive itinerary. A summer cruise is transportation of choice for those who want the ease of traveling through much of Norway. “Our guests today sail with dreams,” says HAL president Orlando Ashford. “They dream of experiencing new lands, new countries and cultures, and learning about the real people who call those places home. Journey by journey, travel has the power to transform our world and us. This is why we sail.” We visited Geirangerfjord, traveled up and down the windswept North Cape, and enjoyed 14 days breathing the clean, crisp Norwegian air. Along Eagle Road is Eagle Bend, a wide curve and viewpoint of the fjord below and the mountain world all around, which was a splendor to behold. Fog floats like clouds in the mountainous areas, and when we drove above the mist and clouds, the pure blue sky beyond them welcomed us. Fjords are said to be the soul of Norway, which is made apparent at Geirangerfjord, on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Our journey included a visit to the idyllic Herdal Mountain Farm in Norddal. We reached the farm on a coach driving the Eagle Road that included 11 white-knuckle hairpin turns. As we drove up the mountain, we saw the Seven Sisters waterfall in the distance, as well as old, abandoned Norwegian mountain farms clinging to the sheer cliff sides. The 300-year-old Herdal Summer Farm sits in a picturesque setting encompassing 30 tiny farmhouses and lies 500 meters above sea level. The small wooden houses feature turfed roofs with trees growing from them and were built under a mighty peak to avoid annual avalanches. During the summer months, it’s possible to see approximately 450 goats at Herdal roaming freely, as well as cows, sheep and fjord horses, also known as blond ponies, which are native to the west coast of Norway. The large number of goats allows for the production of white and brown goat cheese. We were introduced to the art of cheesemaking, followed by indulging in delicious samples. We were enthralled with the sights of nature, small villages and majestic fjords. On the way down the valley, we admired the unspoiled landscape and river that cascaded in several impressive waterfalls. The water in the lakes below was turquoise and emerald-green – a gift from the minerals that flowed from the glaciers. Along the way, we viewed steep mountains still caked with snow on the mountaintops. On our route, we noticed bales of

hay covered in white-and-black plastic that protects food for the animals. Our guide called them troll eggs, in keeping with Nordic folklore that places elves and trolls in caves and grottos on the rocky terrain of the mountains. Trolls, a huge part of Norwegian folklore, are everywhere. Mythically they hide under rocks and bring good luck. Throughout history, these creatures from Norse mythology and folk tales have inspired many writers, composers and even painters. The ugly little creatures with long noses and wild hair can be found in books, statuaries and souvenir shops in the present day. We then ventured close to the Arctic Circle by cruising up the windswept North Cape, or Nordkapp, to the northernmost point in Europe. There we were given the opportunity to mail a postcard from Honningsvåg, where reindeer roam freely. An exciting adventure in Honningsvåg was participating in a king crab safari. It was midJuly, and we wore warm down jackets and sat on wooden benches covered in reindeer pelts. In the center of a huge Lavvu, the temporary dwellings used by the indigenous Sami people in Scandinavia, an open fire glowed as we devoured Arctic king crab that had just been trapped, pulled from the waters and then cooked to perfection for our dining pleasure. As we left to return to HAL’s Konningsdam, we were delighted with the sight of herds of reindeer in the distance. Our journey took us to the village of Flåm, where we boarded a rib boat and dressed in full-body waterproof suits, goggles and knit caps to protect us from the cold. We got up close and personal with the Aurlandsfjord and the Naerøyfjord on an adrenaline-

filled fjord boat tour. We experienced some of the most dramatic fjord scenery in Norway with breathtaking views of the landscape. Our next destination was Bergen, the country’s second largest city after Oslo. Seven mountains surround picturesque Bergen, a former Hanseatic trading post of the German merchants in the Middle Ages. There we experienced the city’s famous fish market on the square and could buy the world’s best salmon, crab, lobster, shrimp and herring. At the end of the market, we tasted the delicacy of a moose hot dog and rode the funicular near the harbor up Mount Fløyen, rising 1,050 feet above sea level, to get a panoramic view of the city. The capitol of arts and culture in Norway, Bergen is resplendent with old wooden houses from the 18th century painted in many colors that lie in a series of rows at the base of the mountains. In Ålesund, a town rebuilt in art nouveau style after a 1904 fire, we witnessed a multitude of towers, spires and beautiful ornamentation. South of Ålesund lies the town of Stavanger, with its cobbled streets, Stavanger Cathedral and Northern Europe’s best-preserved wooden houses. It is the home to the Maritime, Norwegian Canning and Norwegian Petroleum museums. We tasted delectable strawberries that are extra-sweet because they receive 20 hours of sunlight each day during their three-week growing season. We didn’t travel to the adventures in Norway – we sailed through them by cruise ship. Sailing a total of 3,538 miles to and from Amsterdam through Norway on the Koningsdam was a journey and an experience in itself. Not just the terrain but also the rich culture of Norway was a living landscape of beauty.
