Since1957,OldNewsboyshasbroughtSt.Louistogetherto supportyouthinthemetroarea.Afterrecognizingarealneed tosupportatriskyouthinthecommunity,GlobeDemocrat publisherRichardAmbergandmanagingeditorDuncanBauman foundedOldNewsboysandraised$35,000inits firstyear.Today,the organizationannuallyraisesover$300,000forthecommunity.
“ThegoalofOldNewsboysistoensureeverychildinthesurrounding areahasanopportunitytoliveahealthy,educatedlife,”explainsJustin Heutel,a fifth-generationgeneralmanagerofSunsetFordAutoGroup andco-chairoftheOldNewsboysCampaignforKids,alongsidehis cousinPeteHeutel.
ThecousinshavebeeninvolvedwithOldNewsboysformorethan 25years,assistingtheirfatherswithOldNewsboysDay–anannual
fundraisingeventwheremembersofthecommunitysell newspapersdonatedbytheSt.LouisPostDispatchonthe Thursday before Thanksgiving.
“Eachyear,wegrewrelationshipswiththememberswithOld Newsboysuntiltheyultimatelyaskedustobeco-chairsandserveonthe board,”Heutelsays,addingthatthegoalofthecampaignistohelppush theorganization’smissionfurther.“Thebiggerourdonationsandthe moredonorswecan find,thefurtherweachieveourmissiontosupport theselocalorganizationsforchildren.”
WhileOldNewsboysDaymaybemonthsaway,anotherwayto supporttheorganizationisrightaroundthecorner: TheMollyandDoug SansoneFamily“PonyUpforKids”CharityPoloMatchbenefittingOld NewsboysFundforChildren’sCharities.

Thereal-timemonitoringdevicecouldbea gamechangerforpublichealthasAmericans movepasttheemergencyphaseofthepandemic. Oncewidelyavailable,usersmaybeabletodetect aliveCOVID-19virusintheairinjustabout fiveminutes.
“ThepAQmonitorisadevicedesignedto detecthigh-riskairbornevirustransmissions inanycrowdedindoorenvironment,”says WashUDepartmentofEnergy,Environmental &ChemicalEngineeringpostdoctoralresearch associateJosephV.Puthussery.
ThepAQmonitorcombinesacustom high-flowwetcycloneairsamplerwitha llama-derived,nanobody-basedmicroimmunoelectrodebiosensordesignedtotarget theSARS-CoV-2spikeprotein.Thewetcyclone samplesairat1,000litersperminute–making itoneofthehighestflow-ratedevicesavailable –andcollectsairbornevirusesdirectlyintoa liquidcollectionmedia.
Thehighflowrateofthewetcyclonesampler allowedtheWashUresearchteam–which includedPuthussery–tocollect5cubicmetersof airinjustfiveminutesofsampling.Aerosolsenter thewetcycloneathighvelocitiesandimpact theinnerwettedwallsofthecyclone,which arecollectedina liquidmedia.The collectedvirus-liquid mixtureisthen
liquid media. The collected virus-liquid mixture is then
senttotheMIEbiosensorusinganautomated liquidtransferpump,enablingnear-real-time detectionofSARS-CoV-2intheairwithafiveminutetimeresolution.Thedevicemayalsobe effectiveinmonitoringforflu,RSVandother respiratoryviruses.
“Thisdevicecanbeinstalledinvarious settingssuchashospitals,airports,office spaces,theatersoranycrowdedindoorlocation wheretheriskofvirustransmissionishighand ventilationmaybeinadequate,”Puthussery explains.“Withthehelpofthisdata,peoplecan easilyidentifyandsteerclearofplaceswhere thevirusishighlyprevalent,ortheycantake measurestoenhanceventilationinsuchareas. Ifcertainareasconsistentlyshowthepresence ofthevirus,peopleenteringthoseareascanbe advisedtowearmasks.”
Somemaywonderwhyresearcherswould pursuethisgroundbreakingproject–which commencedin2020–nowthatthepandemicis pastitsheight.Therealityisthatairborneviruses willcontinuetothreatenhumanitywhetherwe’re
preparedornot.
“That’saverygenuineconcern,”Puthussery says.“Eventhoughwemaybeinthefinalstages ofthepandemic,itiscrucialtoacknowledge thatairborneviruseslikeSARS-CoV-2stillposea threattopublichealth.Ingeneral,technologies likethiswillhelpcommunitiesbebetterprepared inhandlingandmanagingnewpandemics,unlike duringtheCOVIDpandemicwhentheworldwas caughtoffguard.”
Puthusserysaysthedeviceiscurrently undergoinglabtestingandrequiresfurther designmodificationsbeforeitcanbereleasedfor commercialuse.Theresearchteamanticipates thatitwilltakeanotheryearbeforethedeviceis readyforcommercialization.Butonceithitsthe market,themonitorwillproveausefultoolof protectionforusers.
“Thisdeviceprovidespeaceofmind,” Putusserysays.“Ifyouaresomeonewhofeels stressedattendingacrowdedpublicindoorevent, youcanaccessreal-timedataandbeassuredof yoursafety.”
OnAug.1,1993,thesegmentoftheMississippiRiverbySt.Louis crestedat49.6feet,thehighestit’severriseninrecordedhistory. AccordingtotheNationalWeatherService,watersurgedpastthe Archanddowntownatarateof1.08millioncubicfeetpersecond –fastenoughtofillBuschStadiumin69seconds.Amere2feetof floodwallsavedthecityfromsubmersion.
“1993wasalongtimeago,andmymemoriesaredim,”saysJim Karpowicz,communityoutreachspecialistatMissouriCoalitionforthe Environment.“Idorecalla12-foot-highwallofsandbagsinHartsburg, Missouri.Ononesideweremilesandmilesofbrownriverwater;onthe drysidewastheHitchin’Postbar.Perhapsithadsomethingtodowiththe topography,butallthreeofthetown’schurcheswereunderwaterandonthe wrongsideofthemassivesandbagwall.Butthat’swherethelinewasdrawn: TheHartsburgerswerenotgoingtolettherivertaketheirwateringhole. Andtheydidn’t.”
HOWITHAPPENED
Prolongedrainfallthepreviousyearhadalreadysaturatedreservoirs alongtheUpperMississippiandMissouriRiverbasins.April,JuneandJuly of1993broughtmorerain,withnewsreportsofovertoppedleveesand collapsedbridgescominginonradiostationsacrossMissouriandIllinois. AreasthroughouttheMidwestwereinadownpour,withsomeplacesseeing about5to7inchesofrainperday.OnJuly17,theMissouriRiverbroke throughitsleveeatSt.Charles,collidingwiththeMississippi20milesnorth oftheirusualconfluence.
BylateJuly,43peoplehadlosttheirlivestorisingfloodwaters,and damagestotaled$10billionandcounting.Still,morewaterwasontheway. Thefinal,historiccrest–nowfromtworiverscombined–stillchurned towardSt.Louis.Manyresidentswhosetownswerealreadyinundatedtook outboatstoretrievewhatfewpossessionstheycouldsave.Anotherbreak intheleveeatQuincy,Illinois,floodedalocalbridge,makingtheMississippi impassableformilesbetweenMissouriandIllinois.
VARIEDSOLUTIONS
Forbetterorworse,civilizationhastriedforcenturiestomanipulate riverstoouradvantage.Butwhenitcomestodevelopingfloodplains,the logisticsarecomplex,anddifferingperspectivesmakemattersevenmore complicated.Someexpertssayweshouldleavethefloodplainsaloneand giveriversthespacetoexpandaswaterlevelsrise.Somehaveimprovedthe leveesalreadyandsayweshouldtakeadvantageoftheflatlandnearthe river’sedge.Otherssaythecontinuedmanagementoffloodplainsiskeyto avoidingfuturedestructivefloods.

CrissthinksdevelopmentonMississippiandMissouriRiverfloodplains shouldbelimited,lestwecovertherichsoilinourriverbottomswith commercialrealestateorconstricttheriverswithleveesandwingdams, whichwouldsendmorewaterdownstreamtofloodothercommunities.“If yousqueezeariver,what’sthewatergottodo?It’sgottogoup,right?”Criss asks.“Alotoffloodingisnotaproblem–floodingisanaturaloccurrence. Thefloodplainiswherewatergoesintheyearswhenastreamintermittently hashighflows.Riverconstrictionhasmadefloodshigher.Ourinabilitytoget alongwiththenaturalworldmakesfloodingaproblem.”
Levees,ofcourse,doprotectthestructuresthatalreadyexistin floodplains.IntheFloodof1993,nearly150riversandtributarieswere affected,atleast75townswereunderwaterandmorethan1,000levees failed.AftertheMonarch-ChesterfieldLeveebrokeinJuly1993,leadingto evacuationandthefloodingofhomes,businessesand15squaremilesof farmlandintheChesterfieldValley,anewleveewasbuilt.Topayforthe project,DavidHuman,thenexecutivedirectoroftheMonarch-Chesterfield LeveeDistrict,andMichaelStaenberg,presidentofTheStaenbergGroup, workedtogethertofund$8million,andthecityapprovedaTIFcappedat $72.5million.
Theleveeisclassifiedasverylowrisk,thebestratingforlevees,bythe U.S.ArmyCorpsofEngineersandFEMA.“Theyrateleveesbasedonthe wayitwasbuilt,thequalityofwhatwedidandthedurability,”Staenberg explains.“Wecreated[flatareas]sowecouldhavebiketrails,runningtrails andotheritemsforrecreationandconnectivitythroughouttheentirevalley. Thatwasn’tdonebefore,andnowwehavea17-mileloop.”

Despitedifferingperspectivesondevelopmentandfloodprevention,
MissourihasmadeprogresssincetheGreatFloodof1993.Karpowicz believesmanyfloodplainsinmid-Missouriarebigenoughtocontain floodsifthewatersdorise.“Therehasbeensignificantacquisitionof publiclandssincethefloodof1993,”hesays.“FromBoonvilletoJefferson City,thousandsofacresoffloodplainarenowmanagedbytheU.S.Fish& WildlifeService, theU.S.Army CorpsofEngineers andtheMissouri Departmentof Conservation.”He saystheselands are,forthemost part,opentothe riverduringhigh waterevents, loweringpotential floodcrests downstream.
“Stormwater runoffcarries allmannerof chemicalsand wasteoffofour pavementandintotherivers,”Karpowiczadds.“AtMissouriRiverRelief, wecollecttonsofitemsbelowbigcities–anythingthatfloatswindsupas debrisalongourbigrivers.”

Today,QuarrelsomeCoffeeisthrivingasSt.Louis’ firstandonlyroasterandcafébasedprimarilyon fermentingcoffeebeans.
Thefermentationmethodrequires Quarrelsometotraveldirectlytothesource.Beans begindeterioratingtheminutetheyareremoved fromthetree,sotransportingthempriorto fermentationwouldn’tyieldthebestproduct.“To doitright,youhavetodoitatthepointoforigin; forcoffee,itmeansatthefarms,”Schwarzsays. Jamesbegantrekkingtocoffeeproducers’farms withadozenormoreyeaststrainstooverseeinitial small-batchexperiments.Oncehechoosesthefinal strain,theproducersuseittofermentthebatchof
coffeebeansthatisbroughttomarket.
Jamesusuallyroastsonthelighterside; hefindsitbestaccentuatesthenatural characteristicsofthecoffeebyleavingthe elementsintact.Theprocessrequiresprecision tofindtheperfectbalancebetweenacidityand sweetnessandbringouttheuniqueflavors absorbedintothecoffeeduringfermentation. ByMadeleineAckerburgSomepeoplearebornwithaclearpurpose inlifeLouisePost,frontwomanof’90s powerhousealternativerockbandVeruca Salt,realizedthatpurposewhensheheld aguitarforthefirsttimeat20yearsold.“Iwasin college,andafriendgavemeaguitarandsaid, ‘Here,playthis,’”shesays.“IbasicallyrealizedI hadbeenwaitingmywholelifetohaveaguitarin myhands.”
Itmightbesurprising,consideringherriseto stardomandsubsequenttravelsaroundtheworld, thatPostisactuallyaMidwestwomanatheart.She grewupinSt.LouisandgraduatedfromClayton HighSchoolin1985,wheresheperformedin theatreandbecamecomfortableonstage,which wouldcomeinhandylaterinhercareer.Asachild, shegrewuplisteningtotheBeatlesandFleetwood Mac,singingharmonieswithherparentsand sailingwithherfather,amusicalloverwhogrewup intheCentralWestEnd.Afterherintroductionto theguitar,Postbeganlearningchordsandwriting songsandrecordingthemonataperecorderto sendtoherfather“WhenIwasyounger,he’dtake meoutonthesailboatandwe’dsingharmonies together,”Postexplains.“Isenthimthecassetteof oneofthosefirstsongs,whichactuallyhadtodo withsailingwithhim.Mydadwasalwaysreally
supportiveofmymusicandwouldlistentomy demosreallycarefullyandthoughtfullytogive mefeedback.”
Posthitthejackpotwhenshewasintroduced tofutureVerucaSaltbandmateNinaGordon.The twoclickedimmediatelyandquicklyrealizedthat theircombinedtalentandpassionwassomething special.“Itwasreallyloveatfirstsightwithher intermsofmusicalityandfriendship,”Postsays. “Thefirsttimewesangtogether,Iknewwhatwe hadtogetherwasworthpursuing.Webothtookit incrediblyseriouslyandworkedreallyharduntil thingstookoff.”And“tookoff”theydid,asVeruca Salt,theirco-foundedband,launchedintofame withsizzlingsingles,trailblazingalbumsand asecuredplaceamongalternativerock’smost notableartists.
Itwasn’tuntilthingssloweddownduringthe pandemicin2020thatPostrealizedshefeltcalled tomakesomethingentirelyherown.“It’sweird–I wasn’tintendingonstartingasolocareer,butI justrealizedthatthisalbumneededtobemade,” shesays“Istarteddreamingaboutthesongs thatneededtobewritten;Iwouldwakeupinthe middleofthenightandrecordhundredsofvoice memos.Thesongsreallyletthemselvesbeknown tome.”
Postisnostrangertorestlesssleep,asthetitle ofherdebutalbum,“Sleepwalker,”suggestsThe
hauntinglybeautifulimageonthealbum’scover, aphotographofherniece,wasphotographedin St.LouisandcapturesthedreamlikestatePost experiencedduringthepandemicasshewrotethe album,aswellasherhistoryasasleepwalkerin childhood.“Therecordhelpedmegetthroughthe pandemic,”sheexplains“Thesongwritingreally savedme.”

Theiconic St.LouisUnion Stationhasrecently unveiledaslewoffreshadditions. The newestattractionforthelocalfamilyentertainment destination,dubbedtheSelfieExpress,payshomage tothestation’shistoric1894terminalthatwasonce thebiggestandbusiestinthenation,with32tracks serving22railroads.
“It’saninspirationalmixbetweenaselfie experienceandanillusionattraction,andwespin itaroundtowhereit’strain-themedtomakeitour own,”saysSteveO’Loughlin,presidentandchief operatingofficerofLodgingHospitalityManagement, ownerofSt.LouisUnionStation.
