What act of volunteerism in your vicinity has most heartened you (see p. 78)? MARK BRETZ People who volunteer at nursing homes, as well as the employees, are a special breed. I’ve seen firsthand recently the work that they do, and it is truly wonderful. I am grateful for what they accomplish.
ALICE HANDELMAN What touches my heart are the caring volunteers who add life to the years of the elderly by their visits and by holding their hands, painting their nails and singing them songs.

Editor During my first year of middle school, I developed a serious obsession with handbags – big or small, patterned or plain; I loved them all. Soon I had bags full of bags, and my taste became increasingly more expensive, as well (sorry, Mom and Dad!). Although these days I have pumped the brakes on my collection (I really just try to steer clear of them in stores for the sake of my wallet… And don’t even get me started on wallets), I still have a major soft spot for beautiful bags. So imagine my excitement – and hopefully yours – for this week’s Style feature. Starting on p. 66, LN contributing writer Denise Kruse shares the story of Rafael Adón Córdova, founder, owner, maker and wearer of Rafael Adón, a business featuring handmade leather goods and wellness products. Córdova makes made-to-order bags that involve the customer from start to finish. Not only are Córdova’s bags absolutely stunning, but the fact that he allows clients to play a role in the design process for each one-of-a-kind bag is amazing to me, as well. Speaking of stunning pieces of work, we also hope you enjoy LN contributing writer Brittany Nay’s very punny story on NHB Knifeworks, a custom knife shop in Maplewood founded by a local family. These knives are pieces of practical art on their own; we hope you enjoy the story starting on p. 33. All the best,
Alecia Humphreys

11TH ANNUAL FAIRY TALES CAN COME TRUE CONCERT Photos and story by David Anderson
“F
airy Tales Can Come True: Oh, the Places We’ll Go With Friends Like You!” was the theme of University City Children’s Center’s 11th annual concert at the Caramel Room at Bissinger’s. Guests enjoyed a unique musical experience that featured celebrated classical compositions, arranged to capture the essence of Dr. Seuss’ last nonposthumous book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Alumni parents and classical musicians Melissa Brooks, Dan Rubright, Ruth Price and John McGrosso created the fundraiser years ago to generate needed tuition-assistance financing for families who can’t afford the full cost of the center’s high- Barbara and Michael Shuman quality early-childhood education. Brooks (associate principal cello with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra), pianist Price, and McGrosso and his Arianna String Quartet performed again this year.

A Q&A with Evyn Brown of Chic Beak Boutique
32
SEPTEMBER 2, 2016 | LadueNews.com
making stuff, so I got my creativity from them. My mom’s always been really creative, always crafting, always doing something. I had some really great birthday parties. Where do you find your pieces for refurbishing? Thrift stores, we do a lot of Goodwill shopping, antique shops, flea markets, garage sales – most of the things we have are not brand-new, and they’re always reimagined. We find something that strikes our eye – sometimes I bring it home, and I’m not sure what to do with it yet, but I’ll stare at it until it comes to me. You also mentioned home demonstrations? We have plans to offer home demonstrations for anyone who wants to learn how to create something on their own. We’ll have different options of things to create seasonally, so that it is something to fit every budget and ability, and stay on-trend with the season. These demonstrations would be all-inclusive, so we would come to them with the materials and show the group how to create something that is unique to them. It’s something that we are really excited about launching!
Any future plans? A brick-and-mortar location, perhaps? Eventually, that’s our goal. Right now we’re trying to concentrate on Etsy and more local shows to see what our retail customers are really interested in, what catches their eye, and concentrate on those items. Hopefully, with brick-and-mortar, we’ll be able to offer classes in the store. Eventually, we’d like to do children’s parties, too.

Mother-and-daughter creative team Jennifer and Evyn Brown launched Chic Beak Boutique in January of this year, selling refinished, upcycled furniture as well as hand-painted and handcrafted pillows, canvases and wreaths, both ready-made and custom orders, at area farmers markets and community craft shows. For those of us who love DIY, “maker”-type pieces in our homes, but lack the vision, patience or skill to pull it off well – Chic Beak could be a valuable resource. We spoke with Evyn Brown to learn more about Chic Beak’s products and plans for the future. What do you sell? We only sell goods handmade by us. We specialize in refurbishing goods, like the headboard benches my mom makes, and household décor items like our handpainted pillow that I create. Our items are both ontrend and customizable, allowing us to create products that are unique to the one buying them. We do our best to try and make our pieces individually so that when purchased, you have a one-of-a-kind item to display in your home. What is your background – any formal training? No training – growing up, my parents were always

NHB Knifeworks offers locally handcrafted culinary knives and accessories at its new Maplewood shop. 34
SePteMBer 2, 2016 | LadueNews.com
S
ince he was 5 years old, Nate Bonner has been mesmerized by the primitive edge of knives. From a young age, he’s also been sharp and creative – much like the knives he has always adored – and split his childhood between the West Coast and the Midwest. But wherever he lived, he was searching for a unique new knife to add to his cutting-edge collection. These days, Bonner does more than buy knives: He creates them. The artisan knife-maker is living out his childhood dream, offering handcrafted culinary knives through his family business, NHB Knifeworks, which opened a new retail shop at 7328 Manchester Road in downtown Maplewood in July. “I make knives that are not only beautiful, but have insane structural integrity,” Bonner says. The custom cutlery shop is the fruition of years of hard work, as Bonner carefully carved out his ideal career path. After kicking around the idea of being a fine artist and studying at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, he discovered he could parlay his passion for knives and art in the kitchen by becoming a chef. So he attended the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont and became a chef for the institution. But he still felt called to do something more.

It was soon after Bonner returned to St. Louis to be closer to family that his vision became clear. In 2011, he and his stepmother, Melody Noel, co-founded NHB Knifeworks, opening a brick-and-mortar location in St. Louis in 2012. The family business slowly grew as Bonner honed his knife-making craft. Then, earlier this year, when a prime location on Manchester Road in Maplewood became available, the pair jumped at the chance to display NHB’s lines of knives and accessories to the artisan-loving neighborhood and beyond. And the leap was a success – just a week into its debut, the shop’s sales surpassed a month of business at the previous location. The shop – currently open Monday through Wednesday by appointment only, Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – offers a curated collection of local to national products, ranging from luxury handmade copper cookware to contemporary locally produced dining furniture and cutting boards, to organic ceramic dining-ware containing birch bark, to natural barn-wood trays and ambrosia-maple cheese servers. The highlights are, of course, Bonner’s custom-made chef, utility and paring knives featuring locally sourced wood and metal. “All of our products are made in America,” Bonner notes. “It’s challenging to find, but Melody is a shopping ninja. She goes all over the country – even to the Adirondack Mountains – and finds people who make things, and she buys [such things] and brings them back.” With sales soaring at the shop and on the company’s Facebook page, Bonner is free to focus more attention on his love of creating the highest-quality knives. Customers can witness the artisan in action through a spacious glass window at the back of the shop, request a custom creation or get tips straight from the craftsman himself. “Knives are such a personal thing,” Bonner says. “They have feelings when you hold them, and you need to experience that before you choose one.” Bonner’s most popular piece is a production-run chef’s knife with a massive

9½-inch blade that feels almost weightless. And some of his favorite custom creations sell within hours of being posted on Facebook or displayed on the shop’s wall. Bonner’s custom knife-making process typically takes four to seven days, and the customer is charged by the hour. First, Bonner talks with the buyer and sketches an idea on paper. Then, he buys the desired materials, such as U.S.-sourced steel or carbon steel for the blade, and local oak, cherry or burl wood for the handle. Next, he uses a handheld tool to plasma-cut the knife blade, shapes it in a grinder and heats it in a forge. Finally, he completes the handle’s woodwork, design and finish. “The handle is where I excel, and I am getting to a master level,” he says. When it comes to the knife’s artistic and structural design, Bonner says he pulls inspiration from all kinds of art and architecture throughout history. Each handle’s array of colors and textures emerges from a combination of his mood, his fine-arts background and the natural “feeling” of the wood. Its strength is the result of special joint work inspired by Japanese architecture that can even withstand earthquakes, he explains. “You’re only as good as the art you’ve seen,” he says. As Bonner strives to stay a cut above the competition, fans of NHB Knifeworks should keep their eyes peeled: The business has plans to expand its hours for the fall and holiday season, release a new line of knives and add even more top culinary products from American artists. Because for Bonner, only the finest creations make the cut. NHB Knifeworks, 7328 Manchester Road, Maplewood, 855-642-5643, nhbknifeworks.com

T
he Ryan Tradition is celebrating a 50-year legacy of excellence in real estate service. The luxury real estate team has sold more than $936 million in St. Louis real estate sales since 1991, and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. In addition to John Ryan, team members Aimee Simpson, Andrea Morgan and Neil Ryan – all licensed agents with diverse talents – complete the group. With 75 years of combined experience, they are equipped to serve buyers and sellers in every aspect of the sale or purchase process in all segments of the central corridor market. New on the market is the highest-priced home to date: 1700 South Warson Road in Ladue is for sale at $10.75 million. This is the first time the property has been for sale, and at 30,000 square feet of living space and 32 rooms, it’s one of the most-extraordinary St.
40
Louis properties. Ryan says the home was the most-noteworthy new construction project in St. Louis when it was being built. It is situated on more than 4 acres and is accessed via a private drive off of Twin Springs Lane. “The home was built in the tradition of a grand St. Louis home,” Ryan says. The design is French influenced. Architect Scott Krejci designed it in the manner of a French château, thus its name, Château Deux Sources. The house features six bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, a six-car garage with two employee apartments above it, and 16 fireplaces. Wine lovers will enjoy a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, and the lower level features the perfect space to entertain, with brasserie party room featuring a 21-foot bar and dance floor, as well as billiards and game rooms, a bowling alley, a racquetball court, a glass-enclosed spa, a salon

and theater room with seating for 16. “This home was designed for large-scale entertaining, including hosting charitable events,” Ryan says. “At the same time, it’s also a very comfortable and livable house.” All entertaining areas overflow to beautiful outdoor spaces, Ryan says. Outside features included terraces, gardens, a pool, a pool house, a tennis court, a rose garden and koi pond. Ryan says other noteworthy aspects of the home include the custom carpeting made for the living room, which is the same make as the White House’s Oval Office. He also notes that the house has geothermal heating and cooling, with 18 zones for comfort and efficiency. “We’re very fortunate to work with these specialized kinds of properties,” Ryan says. 9651 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-993-8000, theryantradition.com

AGENT PROFILE
Susan Hurley OF JANET MCAFEE REAL ESTATE
By Amanda Dahl
Susan Hurley was unexpectedly drawn to the real estate industry. “I began only with the intent to sell my own home,” Hurley says. “I simply kept going, and 23 years later, here I am! Who would have ever guessed?” Now, almost a quarter of a century later, the Janet McAfee real estate agent hasn’t looked back. Hurley understands what works for one client may not work for another. “Clients are always trying to convey their needs – and every client’s needs differ. The key is to listen,” she explains. “By listening, you can decode what the client is really trying to say.” She guides clients through the current marketplace with a keen eye for what works best for them. “Consumers can navigate the home-buying and -selling process with blinders on, ignoring market trends. It can be a challenge, but it’s important to have candid conversations to refresh them on current market trends,” Hurley says. The diversity in her approach stems from her attraction to the housing industry. “The best part
about my field of business is connecting with such a wide variety of people and projects. No two days are ever alike!” she claims. “I serve a large geographical area and see all different types of communities and personalities. The sense of pride people take in their communities ... it has such a huge ripple effect – goes way beyond selling a house.” Hurley loves to open clients’ eyes to new places that may just be the perfect fit for them. “Fear of change often prevents people from exploring new spaces and communities,” she says. “It can be so energizing to regroup and think outside of the box!” It is that ability to adapt and thrive that makes Hurley a prominent force in the real estate industry.

Eyelash Extensions 101
By Kimmie Gotch
A
lthough many women strive for long, voluminous eyelashes, curling and applying multiple layers of mascara each morning can be tedious and take time. Luckily, to achieve the perfect long-lash look without surrendering precious Z’s, you have help: eyelash extensions. For such extensions, technicians apply a synthetic, silk or mink lash to your natural lashes, with one false lash applied to every real lash. That can take a while initially, but it’s well worth the wait. Here LN presents a primer on getting and maintaining extensions.
The Process After researching reputable lash salons, book an appointment for a consultation at one. In it, discuss what look you want to achieve with your extensions. Because extensions differ in length and width, make sure you specify whether you want a natural or more “dramatic” look. Once that’s determined, your appointment begins in earnest. While you recline at the salon, the lash technician cleans and preps your natural lashes for extension application. That process can take time
– perhaps two to three hours initially. Since you’re reclining with your eyes closed for that long, I recommend napping – you might as well! Once complete, your new thick, full lashes should make you want to return again and again!
Tips and Tricks Follow these eight pieces of advice to extend your extensions’ lifespan: 1. Don’t wet your lashes till 24 hours after your appointment. 2. Schedule an eyelash fill every three or four weeks. (And breathe easy: Filling appointments take roughly an hour, instead of two to three.) 3. Use the spoolie brush provided by your technician to brush your lashes after you shower. 4. Avoid using oil-based products on your lashes. They loosen extensions’ glue, making your luxurious lashes fall out faster. 5. Although mascara’s allowed, recognize it does shorten lashes’ lifespan. 6. Try to sleep on your back; sleeping on your side can bend and twist your extensions, making them prone to fall out.
RADIO ARTS FOUNDATION presents
Careers in the Arts Opera
7. Extensions shed just like your natural lashes, so if shedding occurs, don’t be concerned. 8. Don’t pull or tug on your lashes. Doing so can damage your real lashes if you pull out your extensions. The most important thing? Enjoy your extensions! When you wake, wash your face, apply a little concealer and be on your way. Extensions not only look beautiful, but also make you feel as if you don’t need any eye makeup. If you take care of them, you’ll be hooked for life!

ucked away in a beautiful historic building in the heart of lafayette square’s hottest stretch of Park Avenue, Rafael Adón’s unassuming storefront can be easy to miss, marked only with a sign that resembles an element on the periodic table. Thick with the aromas of buttery leather and essential oils, the shop might be scant in square footage, but it’s mammoth in its display of vision and innovation, steeped in four generations of collaborative family history and creativity. Founder, owner, maker and wearer of all manner of hats, Rafael Adón Córdova – known to his friends, customers and students as Ralph – houses his two brands in this atelier, under the Rafael Adón umbrella: The first, Verdura Botanica, is an ever-expanding line of luxury artisanal skin and lifestyle wellness products, including soaps, candles and lotions. It was established by Córdova’s family in his hometown of santa Barbara, California, in 1999, blending indigenous plants and botanicals in exclusive formulations that have been in the family for more than 100 years – Córdova’s grandmother and greatgrandmother were respected and beloved curanderas (healers), who believed in using plant and botanical essences to bring balance and wellness to their skin, lives and world.
Metáforros, Córdova’s second and most-recent endeavor, came into being three years ago when a fruitless search for a new leather book bag for his day job as an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ (UMSL) college of education led Córdova to try his hand at crafting his own. His attempt was successful, and it sparked a passion to tie that creative process with his educational background. A new arm of business was born, drawing in the “elements” theme in his brand, which is rooted in the two elements ever-present around us: form and function. Often, Córdova notes, individuals have a lifestyle with day-to-day demands that can’t be captured by a utility bag straight off the showroom floor. Although Córdova does have Metáforros bags premade on his sales floor, made-to-order custom pieces handcrafted in collaboration with individual clients are the bulk of his Metáforros business. With a background as an educational ethnographer, Córdova has a natural curiosity for finding out more about a person’s background and origin. The process begins with an interview for him to get the lowdown on a client’s everyday habits – uses for the bag, items that go in it, travel frequency and how he or she handles the bag at the airport, occupation, family structure – no stone is left unturned. A physical sketch of the bag is made during the interview, which Córdova then turns into digital renderings on an iPad watercolor sketch app. From there, the client weighs in and adds critiques, then Córdova creates a paper pattern for the bag – everything, from the base and side panels to the smallest handle holders, is cut out in the actual dimensions for the client. “The conversation of making it together doesn’t end at the beginning of the interview,” Córdova explains. “It goes along with the development of the bag.” And although the client has the reins throughout the creative process, Córdova always keeps overarching factors that ensure the highest standard of quality and usability for his pieces in his mind, following his theme of form and function: impeccable craftsmanship, timeless design and the highest functionality. Once patterns are approved, Córdova asks the client to select the leathers for his or her bag, some of which he sources from Pittards of London, a stalwart in the

leather dressing business for nearly two centuries. Each element of the pattern is drawn on the hide, then the entire project gets stitched together, hand-cranked stitch by stitch on Córdova’s heavy-duty Consew machine, and the customer’s selected hardware is installed to add color or embellishment. Although Córdova’s services are thorough and extensive, his average turnaround time, incredibly, is one day, once design, fabric and hardware are finalized. The price depends on the scope of the project: A hip bag might run anywhere from $180 to $280, whereas a large tote can cost from $500 to $1,200. Despite the one-on-one nature of the Metáforros custom collaborations, the Rafael Adón brand is, as a whole, truly a family business that hearkens back to generations of Córdova’s Mexican-American heritage. Ingredients for Verdura Botanica products are sourced both in Santa Barbara and St. Louis; for example, Córdova recently spent two weeks at his parents’ California ranch to hand-harvest sun-dried kelp to use in Verdura Botanica’s signature all-natural soaps. All the soap is manufactured in the “factory” back room of the Rafael Adón space, with Córdova’s entire family converging in town once a year for what he calls “a big soap-making extravaganza.” Setting up the store interior was also a family collaboration: Córdova’s parents designed and constructed sturdy shelving linked by a thick, knotted rope suspended from the ceiling, and Córdova’s husband, Jeff Brierly, crafted an enormous display trunk for the ever-growing Verdura Botanica line. Brierly, the creative director at creative agency Verb Editorial, also provides his expertise in product design, branding and packaging for the business. The cultural significance and ultimate importance of family, despite the geographic distance from his own, is part of Córdova’s very life breath. “I don’t view what I do as a transaction; I really view it as building a relationship with my clients,” he says. “I view them as a member of my family – I hope they see me as a member of their family who cares about this thing that we made together – that’s a lot of fun.” Rafael Adón and Metáforros, 1901 Park Ave., St. Louis, 314-621-3784, rafaeladon.com

itto Family Resale is a nonprofit started by a group of local Christian schools in 2011. Profits go directly to these schools to offset rising tuition costs and assist families who could otherwise not afford a private Christian education. Member schools include Central Christian School, Covenant Christian School, Heritage Christian Academy, Kirk Day School, Promise Christian Academy, South City Community School, Twin Oaks Christian School and Westminster Christian Academy. Ditto is a resale store for the entire family. Store manager Deborah Shields says, “There’s something for everyone.” She adds that the store’s 11,000-square-foot showroom features new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and kids, jewelry, home goods, decorative items, furniture, linens, books, toys and more. “Everything in our store is donated,” Shields says. “We get a wide variety of items, including many that are one-of-a-kind. Every day there are new treasures!” Ditto has a small paid staff, but to keep operating

costs low, they rely on a steady stream of volunteers to assist with receiving and processing donations. Volunteers include parents, grandparents and students from the eight member schools, as well as loyal volunteers in the community. Shields says this year Ditto was able to give $105,000 to the member schools. An additional $1,000 will be donated to a local public school yet to be named. “Keeping with St. Louis education, we want to support our public schools too,” Shields says. The store accepts donations every day during business hours (Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). No appointment necessary. Items Ditto can’t sell are donated to other charities so that nothing goes to waste. Ditto also offers complimentary pickups for furniture donations the second Saturday of every month.

hen I hear Jeff Fisher, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, say on HBO’s Hard Knocks that 10-6 isn’t good enough for the 2016 Rams, I want to drug-test the man. His owner is Stan Kroenke, though, so you know what that means – you’re going to lose more than you win. In 15 of his 21 seasons, he’s .500 or worse. Now the man is saying 10-6 isn’t good enough? It’s like giving a steak to a homeless person, and he or she responds, “This is medium-well. I prefer medium-rare.” The last time Fisher actually had a winning season, Donald Trump supported Hillary Clinton, and Caitlyn Jenner was a dude – but 2008 is a long time ago. However, the Rams are a little like the Cubs. They’ve been so awful for so long that they’ve had so many early-draft picks that you can’t screw it up. They have talent on the roster, but they still have Jeff Fisher as the head coach. I’m guessing they’ll find a way to screw it up. After all, they are the Rams. Five Thoughts for This Week:
1
One organization that usually finds a way to win is the Cardinals. Since Bill DeWitt took over the team, there has never been an uneventful September. Although they didn’t contend every year, the years they didn’t, they had the home run chase with Mark

McGwire. So even though it’s been an uneven season, I think September could be eventful. Bet on the Cardinals, not on the Rams.
No one on their deathbed ever wished they would have spent more time at work.
2
I know there are some who may not consider swimming a big-time sport. However, if you put together a Mount Rushmore of most-dominating athletes, I think mine would read like this: Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali and Michael Phelps. If you have more than twice as many gold medals as the next person, that is dominating.
3
I think the position with the most job security is being a Supreme Court Justice, while the least job security is being a pitcher in the big leagues. A funny thing happened to Michael Wacha on the way to superstardom – he never got there. Who knows if this once-promising pitcher will overcome his injuries and be a good pitcher again?
-BARBARA BUSH

4
I think the best sentence ever uttered was by Barbara Bush when she said, “No one on their deathbed ever wished they would have spent more time at work.” I really love my jobs. However, if I won the lottery, I would spend more time playing golf, taking walks, working out, taking vacations and holding my wife’s hand. (Yes, I am writing this at the 11th hour at KSDK.)
Things that I am so impressed with: Netflix original Better Call Saul, books on tape that you can listen to on your phone (the Bill Walton book Back From the Dead is a must), a great Sunday sermon by a dynamic pastor where you take a lot of notes and apply them to your life that week, and a McBride & Son Homes house – they all just have a sense of style.

Bedtime Do’s and Don’ts
R
esearch has shown that children who sleep less than the recommended number of hours suffer an increase in attention, behavior and learning disorders. On the flip side, children and adolescents who sleep too much are prone to obesity, Type 2 diabetes and, again, behavior problems. The situation recalls Goldilocks and her porridge: What’s just right when it comes to sleep? The recommendations for sleep during a 24-hour period, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics, are: ■ 12 to 16 hours, including naps, for children 4 to 12 months old. ■ 11 to 14 hours, including naps, for children 1 year to 2 years old. ■ 10 to 13 hours, including naps, for children 3 to 5 years old. ■ Nine to 12 hours for children 6 to 12 years old. ■ Eight to 10 hours for adolescents 13 to 18 years old. Here are a few tips that will help your kids sleep better: ■ Set an individual bedtime for each child. Identify your child’s sleep pattern. Each child has his or her own sleep pattern that really doesn’t change much.

routine wake-up time. ■ Have a consistent bedtime routine. Knowing the routine and what comes next will be relaxing for your child. He or she will eventually begin to tire at the onset of the nightly routine. ■ Turn off the TV and video games two hours before bedtime. This starts the nightly routine and also begins the process of reducing stimuli before bedtime. ■ Build a sleep-supportive environment. One or two comfort items, like blankets or stuffed animals, can help. Too many just get in the way. Keep your child’s room dark, quiet and cool. Cool rooms promote sleep in both kids and adults. ■ Address bedtime fears instead of simply dismissing them. Talk about them, and constantly reassure your child of his or her safety. ■ Finally, don’t emphasize sleep. Instead, emphasize the routine, the relaxation and the sleep-friendly environment. Good night, all.
An early riser will get up early regardless of his or her bedtime. Know how much sleep he or she needs, and set an appropriate bedtime. Also, set an individual

Parenting time versus custody St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C
Some states are dropping the term “custody” in favor of “parenting time.” One view on this is that the term “custody” can have negative implications. In other words, if at the conclusion of a divorce or child custody matter, one party is giving “sole” or “joint” custody, the thought is that these labels can be counter-productive. For example, a parent who is on the short end of a “sole” physical and/or legal custody award might be put off by this designation. As a result, the thought is that many parents might end up litigating their divorce or child custody matter to get a more beneficial child custody label. For this reason, some states, are dropping the label of “custody” altogether in favor of the term “parenting time.” The term “visitation” is also found taboo in some places as well. In the eyes of some, these terms (“custody” and “visitation”) can seem harsh and judgmental in terms of addressing children
and parenting. Instead, the thought is that family courts should simply allocate parenting time and decision-making between the parents. In states that adopt this approach, the courts are generally able to assign parental responsibilities as well. This means that the family court may assign specific responsibilities to the parents in terms of health care, education, extracurricular activities or other matters. Instead of having scenarios where one party has sole custody and is able to make all final decisions, or joint custody where both parties have to agree, the court could theoretically piecemeal the decision-making. This means that one parent could be in charge of making health care decisions. The other parent might be in charge of making educational decisions, etc. Instead of one parent having sole physical custody, the parties would then be awarded parenting time. Illinois is a state that adopted legislation that fits this format regarding par-
enting time and allocation of parental responsibilities. This is in contrast to Missouri where designations of sole and joint physical custody still exist. The question that is out there is which method is preferable? In many ways, the verdict is still out, but this is still a trend on the rise nonetheless. Woman of Achievement By Alice Handelman
Karandjeff portrait by Sarah Conard | Group photo courtesy of Joni Karandjeff
Joni Karandjeff gives back to the St. Louis community through her work at Women of Achievement, the oldest ongoing organization in the city, which honors leaders and volunteers making a positive impact across the metro area.
Y
ou won’t find anyone more vocal than Joni Karandjeff about the fact that nominations open this week for the 2017 class of Women of Achievement. As president of the oldest ongoing organization in St. Louis whose sole mission is to honor the volunteer service and leadership of women, Karandjeff is excited to spread the word and encourage both organizations and individuals to start thinking about who they would like to nominate this year. Since 1955, the year the Women of Achievement Award was created by the nowdefunct St. Louis Globe-Democrat newspaper, about 612 women have been honored for their significant leadership and volunteer service. Incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1993 by former honorees to ensure the longevity of the award for future generations, the organization recognizes 10 women each May for their positive impact and commitment to improving the quality of life in the St. Louis community. “We would like every woman volunteer who makes a significant difference in the St. Louis metropolitan area to have the opportunity to be nominated as a Woman of Achievement,” Karandjeff says. Women of Achievement selects honorees from a cross section of the geographical, cultural, racial and religious diversity in the St. Louis area. Although their roles and accomplishments are varied, these women share an intrinsic motivation for helping others and making a difference. Two separate selection committees vet the nominations. “This is the fairest process possible,” Karandjeff says. “A woman’s commitment to her community and the impact she makes as a volunteer determines whether she is chosen as an honoree.” The initial selection committee comprises 10 to 12 Women of Achievement, and the final committee also includes sponsors and other community leaders. “These are women volunteers who have demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the St. Louis region,” Karandjeff says. “I encourage all nominators to include a narrative about how the nominee motivates others to join her and whether she is a catalyst for change. How many lives does she touch, and what difference does she make? Did she perceive a problem and find a solution? Note how your nominee has gone above and beyond service in volunteering and what distinguishes her from other volunteers. Did she address a pertinent need, problem or issue?” Notable women who have been honored as Women of Achievement include Susan Block, Sara Burke, Maxine Clark, Kim Eberlein, Eva Frazer, M.D., Teri Griege, Nancy Kranzberg, Marylen Mann, Noémi Neidorff, Gwendolyn Packnett, Joan Quicksilver and Peggy Ritter – women from all walks of life who see a need and have the vision to fulfill that need through their significant contribution of time, energy and leadership. At 68, Karandjeff understands the importance of making a difference. She was

selected as a Woman of Achievement in 2008 for her own commitment to volunteer leadership and child welfare. Married for 46 years to Drew Karandjeff, a retired banker, this Clayton resident, mother of two and grandmother of four was also president of the Women’s Society at Washington University in St. Louis from 2008 to 2010. Growing up in a small town in northern Illinois, Karandjeff was taught the benefits of volunteering by example. “Both my mom and dad worked, but they were also major volunteers, forever stressing the importance of giving back to the community,” she says. “Just as my parents taught me, I have encouraged our children and grandchildren to support their community organizations through their own volunteerism.” A former pediatric nurse, Karandjeff was named Children’s Hospital’s 2007 volunteer of the year. Throughout the past 20 years, she has volunteered nearly 9,500 hours in the hospital’s gift shop, was president of its Friends Board and served on the Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees and its Foundation Board. “It is rewarding when I see patients and their parents come into the gift shop to purchase a shirt, bumper sticker or other logo item to commemorate their stay,” she says. “It shows that despite the difficult circumstances of being in the hospital, they are grateful for the care they have received and want to remember their experience.” For 31 years, she has volunteered for the Greater St. Louis Book Fair, chairing or co-chairing the event five times, and is often called one of the driving forces behind the organization’s continued success. “I am so proud that we are the oldest and largest charity book fair in the Midwest and that we support literary-education programs in the St. Louis region,” she says. She also has served as vice president of the volunteer- and community-focused Junior League of St. Louis, where she was involved with volunteer recruitment and development, receiving its Drue Webster Award in 1993. After raising $1.3 million for the March of Dimes, she received the 2007 Missouri Chapter Community Grant Award for her efforts for that organization. A member of the Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund, a women’s collective-giving organization that supports community programs, she also has volunteered for more than 25 years on committees of the United Way of Greater St. Louis. Karandjeff hopes the community heeds her call and nominates deserving volunteers for this year’s Women of Achievement honors. The deadline for all nominations is Jan. 16, 2017. ecently, 4 Hands Brewing Co. quietly debuted an addition to its popular tasting room with a brand-new second-floor seating area and bar. The 3,500-square-foot room is part of the 20,000-square-foot craft brewery’s current expansion, which includes plans for a new distillery. “First and foremost, we want to make sure people who come here are comfortable. In the past, we’ve been so busy that people come in during weekends and have no place to sit,” says tasting room general manager Cyle Lunsfordhodson. “4 Hands has really become a destination spot. Our tasting room downstairs wasn’t big enough to accommodate the people coming in regularly from out of town and from

the game, so this is really great.” According to Lunsfordhodson, the second-floor space is approximately four times larger than its ground-floor counterpart, providing substantial opportunities for private events and more. The room features a variety of repurposed materials including decorative rustic tiles along the bar and refurbished wood furnishings such as stools by Mwanzi Co. (profiled in the April 29 LN), as well as custom chairs, tables, benches and barstools by Goebel & Co. Wall stencils by local artist Peat Wolleager provide a backdrop to a row of amusements including skee ball and arcade machines – all set to free play. and Tapper. The bar’s open construction also offers a glimpse into 4 Hands’ barrel-aging room. The tasting room offers a dozen mirrored taps on either side of the long bar for maximum efficiency. It also incorporates a unique element: glycol cooling lines that will enable the suspension of 116-gallon beer vessels from the ceiling. According to Lunsfordhodson, the new feature is the first of its kind in the country. From the beer list, choose from house varieties including the flagship City Wide American pale ale, Preserved Lemon Gose wheat beer and Cloud 9 – a raspberry vanilla pale ale with oatmeal and vanilla that is a recent collaboration between LN sister publication Feast, 4 Hands and the Nine Network of Public Media.

The Fifth Wheel, an in-house catering company operated by Baileys’ Restaurants, also recently debuted a revised food menu to coincide with the craft brews. The new menu, which features several beer-infused marinades and sauces, rolled out in May. Rather than the sandwich-based fare from before, the list of offerings takes on a Mexicaninspired theme that plays on previous menu favorites including nachos. Choose from items such as smoked street corn, the City Wide burrito and a variety of tacos with filling options including shredded pork shoulder, marinated skirt steak or oak-smoked chicken – all quick bites perfect to grab before a viewing of The Heir Apparent, opening today at St. Louis Shakespeare.

Story: Eraste’s a genial sort – friendly to all and much in love with Isabelle. That beautiful young woman loves Eraste as well, but her meddling mother, Madame Argante, won’t let her daughter marry a pauper; she’d prefer someone moneyed – and anyone of that description will do. When Eraste’s doddering but wealthy Uncle Geronte himself takes a fancy to Isabelle, Eraste frets for his own future. Never fear, though! Geronte’s longtime servant, Crispin, concocts a scheme to benefit the young lovers and help himself and Geronte’s maid, Lisette, as well: Crispin poses as the declining Geronte, fashioning a will that’s surprisingly generous. Unfortunately, Crispin and Eraste have greatly overestimated Geronte’s decline and death, and he recovers from a mere stupor in time to wreak confused havoc on all of the scheming. This delights Madame Argante but frustrates the diminutive attorney Scruple, who’s been hired to execute Geronte’s fabricated will. Who will be the real heir apparent to Geronte’s wealth when the geezer finally kicks the bucket? Highlights: St. Louis Shakespeare hopes to again catch lightning in a bottle after its wildly successful production of David Ives’ adaptation of The Liar a couple of years ago. Although not as refined or polished as that gem, the troupe’s rendition of Ives’ adaptation of The Heir Apparent is generally a loony, lighthearted romp. Other Info: Ives, a master of original comedies like All in the Timing and Venus in Fur, also has proven adept at adapting classics like The Liar and A Flea in Her Ear. St. Louis Shakespeare’s earlier version of The Liar was one of the wittiest productions in the company’s 32-year history. Ives adapted The Heir Apparent from an 18thcentury farce by French playwright Jean-François Regnard. He maintains the original’s poetic underpinnings with rhyming verse that’s clever except when the rhymes are forced to fit a cadence with only secondary regard for meaning. The first act of this two-act presentation felt erratic on opening night, perhaps because of the style and rapid delivery of speech, particularly by Isaiah DiLorenzo as Crispin. In any event, director Donna Northcott found a much steadier pace in the second act, which allowed the players to fully engage in their characters to amusing effect. DiLorenzo recovered nicely after early madcap dashes through his dialogue, to the point where his work in several disguises as “distant relatives” of Geronte yielded comic mayhem at its finest. Ives’ play combines wordplay in the dialogue and well-executed physical comedy to enhance humor, and DiLorenzo proved especially funny in the latter realm.
In general, Northcott coaxed winning portrayals from her cast and mostly succeeded in getting them to mine their characters’ rich comic potential. Britteny Henry, for example, delighted with both her delivery and expressions in making Lisette fine comic support for Crispin. Anthony Winninger mastered the painful art of walking on his knees (at least to the eyes of one old guy watching the play) while mincingly enunciating the precise words of the easily offended (and substantially short) Scruple. He most excelled at reading back the words of “Geronte” (Crispin in disguise) and … er … physical distractions, as well as reacting to the old man’s odd behavior. Shane Signorino, though, played the cantankerous Geronte too far over the top even for the broad style favored by Ives and Northcott. His consistency in doing so, though, helped me adapt to that interpretation as the show developed. Scott McDonald was earnest if a bit overmatched at times in the role of Eraste, although he responded well to his colleagues’ energy. St. Louis Shakespeare founder and former artistic director Northcott and her successor, Suki Peters, through the years have leavened the troupe’s core of performances on works by the Bard with clever comedies written by a cadre of modern playwrights who dabble in classical forms. The Heir Apparent isn’t at the top of those performances, but it does induce chuckles.

n its juxtaposition, the image radiates poignance. Clad in a rusty hoodie, a corduroy-and-denim coat like an unsettled March sky and a ridiculously green sock cap, the bearded, bearish man peers downward at his grimy right hand, which cradles a beaked bundle of taupe fuzz smaller than a tennis ball: what looks like a sandpiper chick. That 21- by 27-inch 2016 piece bears the title The Patron and comes from Collinsville artist Ron Vivod. “My work consists of all my own photography digitally reconstructed and drawn into, then printed by inkjet on archival fine-art paper,” Vivod says of that example of latter-day Thoreauvian loveliness. “I call the process photodigital drawing.” A “retired graphic designer fulfilling a dream of participating in the world of fine art,” Vivod says, “My work extends beyond wall decoration, reaching out to the viewer to express a personal image of our relation to the world of nature and how we use or abuse it. Among driving concerns in my creative process are nature, nostalgia and the illusion of texture in two-dimensional work.” He self-describes as “an alumnus of SIU at Edwardsville, having also studied art at Washington U in St. Louis and individual study in Munich, Germany. I have exhibited extensively in the Midwestern states and have art in private collections around the U.S. and in Canada, Europe and Korea.” Beyond the ursine-avian splendor of The Patron, Vivod’s recent works include Elemental Evolution, a depiction of “transformation from natural stone to carved statuary”; Home to the Barn, an achingly lovely long shot of a stoopshouldered man leading a longhorn down a dirt road amid trees and other flora hazed by late autumn; and White on the River, a close-up of a white pelican worthy of famed 19th-century American painter, ornithologist and naturalist John James Audubon. “When we are all long gone and forgotten,” Vivod concludes, “nature will still be here.”

From broadway to brentwood and bob Hope to sam the Watermelon man, Cheri Ann schear reminisces about her life in showbiz.
– ’ C
hatting with Cheri Ann Schear approximates cruising the Great White Way in a stretch limo with kliegs streaming off chrome outside and Dom chilling in a bucket of rocks inside. In that respect, it seems apt that the local group Arts for Life (whose website states it strives “to service those in need, to honor those that give unselfishly, to praise stage performance and to remember those no longer with us that exemplified these qualities”) recently celebrated Schear’s lengthy career in show business by bestowing on her its Lifetime Achievement Award. “I was overwhelmed – I was so surprised,” the Brentwood resident recalls of that June laurel. “I had no idea that I was even eligible for this because I’d been a judge on the Arts for Life committee for 16 years. So they knew me, and since I’d been in show business for 60 years, they figured, for my body of work, that they’d honor me.” The announcement of that anything-but-trivial recognition, ironically, came at a February Arts for Life trivia event and added Schear’s name to a stellar roster. “In the past, they’ve honored very famous people, and now they’re honoring local people [who have remained local],” she says. “Past recipients have been John Goodman, Phyllis Diller, Shelley Winters … people of that caliber. And so now they’re giving the award to local people who have had a lifetime of work in the theater.” That lifetime of professional work began for Schear at the age of 20 in an almost classic “Schwab’s soda fountain” fashion – St. Louis-style. “I was ‘discovered’ when I sang in Gaslight Square … ,” she recalls, referring to St. Louis’ legendary entertainment district loosely centered on the intersection of Olive and Boyle streets from the early 1950s through the mid-’60s. “An agent from MCA wanted to sign me, and that’s how I got to tour with George Gobel.” The eyes of readers “of a certain age” likely will brighten at the mention of Gobel, a Chicago native who starred in an eponymous TV program from 1954 to 1960 on NBC and then CBS. “Lonesome George” ranked as a gentle, digressive humorist in the days before comedy turned cutthroat and comics took to gripping a microphone in one hand and a straight razor in the other. To this day, a quarter of a century after Gobel’s passing in L.A., Schear’s voice warms noticeably when she shares memories of him.

“He was so funny and just terrific,” she says. “He would throw parties in his room, and a dozen or more people would show up – and then he’d disappear and go to bed! And he was just like that – he was just delightful. “We did a duet together, doing ‘You Are My Sunshine,’ where I did some operatic coloratura, and then he’d yodel, and we’d sing it together. We performed in big auditoriums [with] 10,000 seats. “And we’d go to these towns in North and South Dakota and Nebraska and all over the Midwest. … We toured through the United States, 3,500 miles in three weeks.” Despite the Gobel tour and other adventures elsewhere, she never forsook St. Louis, in particular maintaining a long-term relationship with The Muny. “Many, many, many, many, many years – I performed there over the years,” Schear relates with a laugh as effervescent as a flute full of bubbly. “I performed there four years, from ’57 to ’60, 11 shows a summer, and then after that, I performed over many years up through 1985.” At The Muny, Schear worked with legendary Hispanic thrush Chita Rivera – who shot to Broadway stardom in West Side Story and who graced The Sheldon’s annual gala in April – and singer/actress Carol Lawrence. “I got to know Carol pretty well,” she says, “and we performed together in Kansas City at their Starlight Theatre, Sweet Charity.” She also headlined musical revues in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Aruba, where she performed for Beatrix of the Netherlands, at the time still just that nation’s heir presumptive, not its queen. And then, of course, there was a gent named Hope. “I worked with Bob Hope at The Muny!” Schear exclaims, referring to perhaps the most prominent mainstream American comedian of the latter half of the 20th century. “In 1958, we did Roberta. … And then we all went out to Sam the Watermelon Man.” Um, OK. What? “That was a big deal then, like Ted Drewes is for frozen custard now,” Schear explains. In that era before central air conditioning transformed most homes into domestic meat-packing plants, St. Louisans reportedly flocked to a North Side watermelon stand operated by Sam Swibelman (or Zvibleman) that dished cooling slices of the ‘Black Diamond’ cultivar. “We all went out, the whole cast, and we had Sam the Watermelon Man,” she says, adding that the next day, metro newspapers teemed with photos of Hope noshing a local cucurbit. Schear next pauses to reflect on her vocal influences. “Growing up, I always loved Eydie Gormé,” she says, referring to the überglamorous Manhattanite who specialized in ballads and swing, often in company with her husband, Steve Lawrence.

Schear also confesses to idolizing cabaret and musical-theater artist Marilyn Maye, who just took the stage in July at The Sheldon Concert Hall with Ann Hampton Callaway. “They were phenomenal,” she says. “People [like that] who can sing a song and transmit a feeling to the audience – that has always been my goal. I just love Broadway show tunes and ballads and songs that have meaning.” Ultimately, that love led Schear to one of the most storied performing venues not just in the nation but in the world: New York’s Carnegie Hall. “I’ve been there one time!” she exclaims with a modest, if pleased, chuckle. At the time, she was singing in the chorus of the St. Louis Symphony under famed maestro Leonard Slatkin. “It was back in November of ’94, I think – it was very interesting,” Schear says, continuing with a reference to the British musician, comedian and actor who starred in the 1981 blockbuster Arthur. “It felt like I was in a Dudley Moore movie, standing on the stage where all the famous people have performed.” Even after almost six decades, she continues to “give back,” in the vernacular, by regularly visiting area nursing homes and senior centers under the auspices of a state pageant organization, with accompanying singers, dancers and musicians. Later this month, in a revue titled “Memories of the ’60s From Broadway, Film to Pop,” she also will perform with the Windsor Theatre Group at Webster Groves’ Ozark Theatre. “It’s music of the ’60s, and it’s from Sept. 16 to Oct. 2, Friday, Saturday, Sunday [each week],” Schear says. Briefly, she reflects on her longtime affiliation with that local charitable organization. “I started out with [singer] Jeff Stewart in the group – oh, 30 years ago or so – and they do shows once a year, maybe twice a year,” Schear relates, “and I’ve just been a part of that, mostly over the years. And they do musical revues with accompaniment – piano and so forth, revues of the music from Broadway shows and so forth.” Charmingly, by the way, whenever she mentions the piano, Schear pronounces it with something like a Continental inflection: pee-AH-no. Beyond the Windsor Theatre Group gig, the Arts for Life laurel and similar recent highlights – in 2010, she won the national Ms. Senior Sweetheart Pageant, “for lovely ladies over age 58,” its website states – Schear concludes by mulling what’s driven her from year to year and decade to decade. “If there’s an opportunity that comes up that I feel that I’m suited for, I take it,” she says. “I’ve been lucky, especially early in my career, being able to travel and perform – like touring with George Gobel and singing at Carnegie Hall with the symphony chorus and things like that. And singing opera and doing Broadway revues and performing at [The Playhouse at Westport Plaza]. … “I just love performing.”

The ABCs of Jazz
Jazz St. Louis introduces one of the coolest interactive learning experiences in the city. Starting by jazzing up the alphabet, the organization introduces elementary children to the concepts of one of the most influential music genres through its educational program called WeBop. T
here’s just something about jazz that gets your feet to tapping and fingers to drumming. It makes you want to sway to the rhythm and get swept up in its diverse sounds. What better way to incorporate the invigorating qualities of jazz into your life than through your child’s education? Jazz St. Louis presents that unique opportunity through educational programs, like WeBop, an 8-week lesson plan introducing children, ages 3 to 5, to the world of jazz. “The focus isn’t on teaching the mechanics of music. It really is more of a social development program,” Phil Dunlap, director of education and community engagement at Jazz St. Louis, explains. “The 45-minute classes serve the purpose of strengthening the bond between child and caregiver.” This multi-purpose exposure to the music genre creates a partnership between child and caregiver as together they learn different forms of expression. “This [Fall] term, the ABCs of Jazz will cover specific jazz concepts, including swing, the blues and improvisation,” he says. “We will explore those concepts through the music of important individuals, such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Each week will feature different music and artists.” A new term brings a new focus with it. The 2016
00
spring term highlighted specific artists to give children a lesson in some of the jazz greats. “The kids get to add lyrics to a song by a jazz artist, which really connects all the concepts [we’re teaching] together,” Dunlap says. “Last term, the students added the ABCs to a John Coltrane song.”
Students work through a storybook based on the new term’s theme. Beginning and ending with a song, every day incorporates music designed to encourage participation and self-expression. In the middle of the lesson, an opportunity to create and explore each child’s favorite form of expression arises. “During Move, each child gets to pick how they want to move.

The song and movements that follow are reflective of that choice,” Dunlap explains. A pianist and teacher lead each class, with the exception of a couple of weeks. “The [band weeks] are always fun, cool weeks,” Dunlap says. “The instruments and musicians chosen make up a standard jazz quartet, with piano, trumpet, bass and drums. The live band takes over the classroom and follows the same [lesson plan].” Two out of the eight weeks promise interactions with the live quartet, giving children a feel for how the music they’ve been learning about can all come together. “The program is very interactive. Kids are always moving, always participating – and music is involved in every aspect of each class. It was created by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, where teachers attend training. We do a lot of work with them through various programs and it is my desire for Jazz St. Louis’ educational programs to have something for all ages,” Dunlap says. “Ideally, kids can start with us in elementary school and stay with us all the way through high school…maybe even college graduation.” Learn more about Jazz St. Louis by visiting The Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz at 3536 Washington Ave. or calling 314-571-6000.
