EDITOR’S NOTE
Books are your friends. For many of us, this was something that was ingrained from the moment we could say our A-B-Cs. I’ve always loved books; but when I was younger, I remember feeling intimidated by libraries (maybe it was the librarians, now that I think about it). These days, libraries are one of my favorite places to hang out—or sometimes, hide out. There’s a certain something about a library’s overall atmosphere that makes one feel there’s no limit to the imagination. This week’s Nonprofit Spotlight shines on the St. Louis County Library (SLCL) and the foundation that supports its programs throughout the community. A few days ago, SLCL received some good news: It was named the 2014 Missouri Library of the Year. For longtime fans like me, this was no big surprise. What was news to me was the breadth of services it offers to St. Louisans of all ages and interests. And did you know that its author program is the largest of its kind in the country? But wait, there’s more...Our feature begins on p. 21.

Are you ready for some football? Frank Cusumano Although I spent my childhood in a gym, and have spent a good chunk of my career at Busch Stadium, nothing can touch the NFL. The fantasy football angle helps, but there just isn’t a game that doesn’t have some compelling angle. Let me put it this way: I would have very little interest in watching Arizona play Colorado in baseball, but I would love to watch the Arizona Cardinals play the Denver Broncos in football.
Dr. Joseph Kahn I am looking forward to this football season because I was able to sell my Rams PSLs to someone who told me she, “loves football, even bad football.” I’ll root even more for MIZZOU.
Connie Mitchell I am not ready for some football. But I am ready to cheer while my sons play high-school soccer and run cross country for the next couple of months! Two great sports — less risk of concussion. Delicious

Light Up Their Life
BY LISA WATSON
W
HEN 1-YEAR-OLD HAILEY WAS diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in 2011, everything changed quickly for the little girl and her family, recalls her mother, Cass Tracy. “We found a lump on her arm a day before she turned 1, and when she had her 1-year checkup a couple of days later, we showed the doctor,” Tracy recalls. “He had us keep an eye on it for a week. When we went back, it hadn’t changed; but she had bruising on her back and legs, and also little red dots on her chest and neck.” With those symptoms, the doctor sent them for blood work. “Within 40 minutes, we were told she had ALL, and we were immediately put in the hospital so she could start her treatment,” Tracy says. “She started chemo within hours of being in the hospital.” After a month of treatment, Hailey was in remission; but because it was blood cancer, she continued to receive chemotherapy for two-and-a-half years. Hailey responded well to the treatment, but due to weight gain from steroid medications, she stopped walking and later
needed to learn again. “I don’t think she really understands a lot, even now,” Tracy says. “Being sick and getting treatment is just a part of her life. She doesn’t realize how lucky we are to have her.” Today, Hailey is a 4-year-old whose pre-school teachers say the illness hasn’t caused her to fall behind her peers at all. She will be celebrated as an Honored Hero at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light the Night Walk in Forest Park on Saturday, Sept. 27. It will be the family’s fourth year at the event, and they’ll be there with some 50 supporters, Tracy says. “We love it because it’s a unique event; and because it’s just a walk, everyone can get involved, and you can bring the kids because they have so many activities.” The true highlight of the event is at dusk, says Richard Mark, president and CEO of Ameren Illinois, who is serving as Light the Night’s corporate chair for the second year in a row. “You look out and there are more than 15,000 people holding these illuminated lanterns that are white, red and gold—they represent survivors, supporters and the memory of those lost to leukemia and lymphoma,”

i d dy u p, c i t y s l i c k e rs, a n d prepare to wet your whistle at the hoedown! For the second year in a row, the American Cancer Society is bringing its signature Cattle Baron’s Ball to St. Louis in an effort to raise support and awareness through a distinct and memorable evening—lassos not required. “The Cattle Baron’s Ball originally started back in Texas in the 1970s as a way for fundraising groups to raise money for the American Cancer Society, explains Mary Dedeaux-Swinton, co-chair of the upcoming St. Louis event. “It’s a Western-themed, casual event where people who are concerned about cancer research can come and support the American Cancer Society. What exactly does ‘Western-themed’ mean? The event is being held at the Equine-Assisted Therapy, Inc. Arena, which has a dirt floor. Boots would be the ideal footwear to this fundraiser, and cowboy or cowgirl flair—such as hats and belt buckles—are sure to be the norm. “I joked when we first kicked this off this year that we were bringing country back, says co-chair Kari Culver.
“Last year was so funny, because you would see CEOs of major companies in St. Louis wearing something they never thought they would wear to gala. The Nov. 1 event will feature a buffet dinner, silent auction, mystery boxes and more to benefit the American Cancer Society, including its Hope Lodge—St. Louis. The facility offers free accommodations for out-of-town patients and one caregiver staying in St. Louis for cancer treatment. “Some of these people are in chemo for six weeks, Dedeaux-Swinton says. “Can you imagine [staying in] a hotel for six weeks? While Culver had previously heard about the American Cancer Society and the Cattle Baron’s Ball, she says the organization can be overlooked until you or someone you know needs it. She became involved when cancer struck close to home. “In June, I lost my brother-in-law to leukemia, says Culver. “That wasn’t supposed to happen, but I truly do think, and believe with my heart, that organizations like the American Cancer Society will find a cure for cancer—and it

may even happen in St. Louis. This year’s goal is to raise $170,000, and Dedeaux-Swinton says fundraising is on track so far. “This can be St. Louis’ shining event, she says. “St. Louis has a lot of influential people and institutions. [It’s] a great research city, and I think that this event will help shine a light on that.

St. Louis County Library Foundation By Julia Christensen
MISSION: In support of the expansive, publicly funded St. Louis County Library (SLCL)—which includes its headquarters and 19 branches—there is the SLCL Foundation, which works to fill gaps in funding and other resources. Barbara Turkington, the Foundation’s assistant director of advancement, explains that its mission is to secure financial support that goes beyond the Library’s public funding by sponsoring special programs and projects, as well as serving as ambassadors for the Library. HISTORY: Since its inception in 1999, the SLCL Foundation has worked to support projects unable to be funded by tax-payer money. One such project seems basic in nature, but makes a big impact—billboard-sized, to be exact. A library is nothing more than unused books without people visiting it, and Turkington notes that promotion of the library through these advertisements cannot be funded with traditional library finances—and that’s when the SLCL Foundation steps in. COMMUNITY IMPACT: From providing at-risk preschoolers with books to creating library teen centers, the SLCL Foundation supports a variety of programs to help St. Louisans big and small.
SLCL Foundation’s Gift of Reading celebration
“We host the largest author program of any public library in America,” Turkington notes. “Although we support a lot, that is clearly one of the most popular.” On average, 70 internationally and nationally recognized authors visit the library every year. During such appearances, audience sizes range from 75 to 1,000 people. Other projects include creating a children’s space at the Natural Bridge Branch, building a reading garden at the Samuel C. Sachs Branch (scheduled to open May 2015), working with students in the Normandy School District, and more. Turkington says the Foundation even provides books to Give Kids A Smile, the free dental clinic. “[To] these kids who sometimes have never had a dental appointment, that can be such a traumatic thing,” she says. “When they’re done with that, they get to pick out any book they want from the books that are there.”
GIFT OF READING PHOTO BY DAVE MOORE
ON THE BOARD: MAURICE QUIROGA For SLCL Foundation board president Maurice Quiroga, his service is a passion. “As I learn more about what the St. Louis County Library does—and how it reaches out to the community, young kids and families—I have found this tremendous passion in what libraries are doing today,” he says. “I think many people start to assume they’re going to fade away because of technology and eReaders; but actually, we’re seeing population and usage numbers in libraries grow exponentially.” When discussing library points of pride, Quiroga highlights the authors the library brings in, as well as the expansive genealogical archives. “Supporting
WHAT/WHEN/WHERE: STARCATCHERS GALA SEPT. 20 LIBRARY HEADQUARTERS Remember to buy tickets early next year: The ever-popular Starcatchers Gala has sold out for the fifth year in a row. The next big event is the Saint Louis County Library Foundation’s 15th Anniversary Celebration with the St. Louis Symphony and artist Billyo O’Donnell on Nov. 10 at Library Headquarters. At this free event, the Symphony will perform as O’Donnell paints the performers. The artist’s work will be projected on a screen so the audience can watch him work while enjoying the music.

The Ryan Tradition
P
ull into the circle drive of 28 Twin Springs Lane and step into a two-story traditional-style mansion with soaring ceilings, an expansive terrace and a sparkling pool, all situated on 3 private acres in a coveted Ladue neighborhood. If this is your idea of a place to call home, it could be yours. The 11-year-old, custom-built manse with only one previous owner is among the most high-end estates on the market in the city’s Central Corridor. Listed at $3.295 million through The Ryan Tradition with Coldwell Banker Gundaker, it’s just the type of unique, upper-market real estate the team has specialized in for almost 50 years, John Ryan says. Tucked into the exclusive Twin Springs Estates, the 4-bedroom, 6-bath property is one of few high-end homes available in the area. Originally developed in the ’50s off Warson Road, the subdivision consisted of ranch-style houses that have been replaced with custom estates in recent years. “The majority of the neighborhood has homes that

are 20 years old or less, so it is a unique situation,” Ryan explains. Perfect for a growing family, the property features four bedroom suites, including a master bedroom suite with an adjoining dressing room, two walk-in closets, and a luxury bath and steam shower. Quality architectural details, including cathedral ceilings, built-in bookcases and bay windows, add character. Additional highlights include his-and-her studies and a center island kitchen with a butler’s pantry, breakfast area, topof-the-line appliances and walk-in pantry. Ideal for entertaining, the main floor’s spacious rooms flow out onto a 1,500-square-foot rear terrace overlooking the gently rolling, tree-lined backyard. A glistening pool and lush landscaping complete the private grounds. The fun continues with a finished walkout lower level featuring a family room, game space, fireplace and exercise room. And for the car enthusiast, the 4-vehicle garage includes three substantial 25-foot bays.

This exclusive property continues The Ryan Tradition’s track record of offering upper-end real estate. “The properties we’ve dealt with in 2014 are some of the highest-level transactions in the market—as high as $3.8 million,” Ryan notes. And the tradition seems likely to continue, as more estates in the $2-million-plus range are set to come on the market this fall, Ryan says. “Our annual sales were $32 million for 2013. With the way the market is tracking now, we expect to exceed that in 2014.”

cale, design, age and special details: It takes a particular combination of each of these elements to make S a truly exceptional real estate listing—something St. Louis, and the Central Corridor in particular, is flush with. Read on to see the most impressive listings from some of the area’s top agents.

Stephanie Connell, Gladys Manion Real Estate
John Ryan, Coldwell Banker Gundaker
Architect Ralph Fournier designed this 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom Mid-Century masterpiece on a Chesterfield bluff overlooking the undeveloped Missouri River valley. “The house has old, mature trees and wonderful views,” listing agent Ted Wight says. “You almost feel like you could be in the Ozarks.” The property, listed for $2 million, sits on 5.8 acres, and includes a guest cottage, riding ring, stable and mother-inlaw’s wing, complete with a bedroom, living room, kitchenette, bathroom and its own entrance.
Tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and a “costal-contemporary” atmosphere give this home, listed for $2.599 million, a plethora of natural light and style, says listing agent Stephanie Connell. Completely renovated, the 5-bedroom, 7-full and 2-half bath home features a pool, sand volleyball court, screened lanai and a covered porch outside, as well as hardwood and terrazzo floors, spacious rooms and top-of-the-line appliances inside. The three levels of living include a remarkable lower level, and each of the five bedrooms are suites.
One of Clayton’s classic historic homes, this 100-year-old Colonial mansion, listed for $3.475 million, features large windows and a gated rear entrance from Wydown Boulevard. In addition to a kitchen and hearth room addition, nine fireplaces and a large master suite with a dressing room, the entire back of the house is a glass atrium overlooking the pool and yard. But one of the most remarkable assets, says listing agent John Ryan, is the home’s size: The living room alone is 600 square feet; the house, in total, is 10,000, perfect for large-scale entertaining.
7953 PARK DRIVE

11629 CONWAY ROAD
Katie McLaughlin, Laura McCarthy Real Estate
Peggy Dozier, Janet McAfee Real Estate
Mark Gellman and Neil Gellman, Coldwell Banker Premier
What really sets this listing apart from others, agent Katie McLaughlin says, is the beautiful lot. Complete with a pool, pool house, meticulously cared-for garden and large koi pond, the yard is designed around a magnificent wedding wall, original to the property. The home itself, listed for $1.475 million, combines older charm with a main-floor addition to meet today’s living standards. The addition includes a breakfast room, hearth room and kitchen, and ties in nicely with the rest of the home.
Listing agent Peggy Dozier says that although this 4-bedroom, 4-full and 2-half bathroom home is only 8 years old, “it’s not one of those big, giant houses that’s all about the square footage,” she says. “It’s the finishes and attention to detail throughout that’s just exquisite.” Highlights include vaulted ceilings, a loggia with an outdoor fireplace, and beams made from pre-Civil War barns in Ohio, with woodworking done by master craftsmen. The home, which also includes a fifth bedroom and bathroom over the garage, is listed for $5.295 million.
A 2-story rolled-barrel ceiling runs from the front to the back of this modern, ranch-style home, its glass rear wall overlooking the fairway of Westwood Country Club. The home has four bedrooms and 3-full and 1-half bathroom, as well as a glass staircase and stone gazebo. “The entire home is sunlit,” says listing agent Mark Gellman. “The window walls and rolled-barrel ceiling are impressive inside and out.” Though the home is being listed for $1.849 million, the current owner is offering a $150,000 credit to the purchase price. {LadueNews.com} September 5, 2014

Q&A WITH ANDREW WEIL
A Landscape of Landmarks
BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN
W
HAT IS A HOME WITHOUT character? Here in St. Louis, character is merely a stone’s throw away, as the area is packed with historic dwelli n gs a n d b u i l d i n gs. We recently spoke with Landmarks Association of St. Louis executive director Andrew Weil to find out more about some of the properties the organization protects.

Tower Grove East is Landmarks Association of St. Louis’ most recent district addition to the National Register of Historic Places.
certain level of procedural protection against arbitrary demolition; but also, importantly, National Register listing is the thing that qualifies a building for state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credit. What must a homeowner keep in mind if they live in a landmark house? Once again, it depends on who called it a landmark and where they live. There are National Register of Historic Places historic districts, but there are also local historic districts, which are created by ordinances. Local historic districts have design review guidelines associated with them. There are thousands and thousands of more buildings in just National Register districts [in which you could practically] lop the top part of your house off and paint it pink. Now, if you want to use the rehab tax credits, you do have to adhere to certain standards of design…If you want to rehab your house and not use the tax credits, you can [do] whatever you want.
Tell me about some areas in the region featuring landmark homes. Our organization has worked in North St. Louis, South St. Louis, the central corridor— these historic districts [that] exist all over the city. We’ve also helped out communities like Kirkwood, Washington, and Troy, Missouri. And we have been working more closely with some of the towns over in Illinois trying to facilitate cross-river mutual interests. Why is it important to preserve these homes? They’re beautiful and useful, and they’re already here—we don’t have to build them, we don’t have to convert new corn fields and soy bean fields into subdivisions. They just need a little bit of loving care, and they’re ready to rock and roll. Also, they represent the history of our community. They’re the physical manifestation of where we came from and who we are, and that’s important...We like to say the greenest building is the building that’s already standing.
What qualifies a home for landmark status? It depends on where you are. There’s a large system called the National Register of Historic Places. Many buildings in St. Louis City and County, and all across the state, are listed, providing them a certain level of protection from a federal undertaking. In different municipalities, the National Register listing triggers different protections at the local level. In St. Louis City, a National Register listing triggers review of demolition permits by the city’s Cultural Resources Office, and the point of that is to try to prevent the arbitrary demolition of significant, useful buildings. In St. Louis County, it’s different; every municipality has its own rules, and many don’t have rules at all. I’m not as familiar with the landscape of historic preservation across St. Louis County, but cities like Kirkwood or Webster Groves will create landmarks of their own through local ordinances based on architectural merit or historical significance to the town or community. In St. Louis City, there are city landmarks that are not necessarily National Register properties; they’re properties that are designated city landmarks by ordinance. Our organization is an independent nonprofit organization. We’re dedicated to historic preservation, education about the architectural heritage of the St. Louis area and promoting the opportunities that historic buildings provide for current residents. We can’t do landmark designations, but we can do National Register of Historic Places nominations. We were founded in 1959, and over the years our organization has listed tens of thousands of buildings—in St. Louis City primarily, but not exclusively—in the National Register. One of the benefits of listing buildings in the National Register in St. Louis is that you get a

ROM SHUTTLING KIDS TO SCHOOL and sports activities to parents’ busy work schedules, families often have difficulty making quality time to be together. As the mother of two kids, Tammy Wildman knew this scenario all too well. So, she decided to create a unique solution—one she dubbed, Kid City. The fifth annual hands-on event aims to help parents do it all, from spending a fun day with their kids to learning about resources for families. “This is not your typical event,” Wildman notes. “Everything is interactive, and everything is an educational experience.” This year’s Kid City, held at Taste of St. Louis from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21 in Chesterfield Central Park, will feature math, science, literacy and art activities, and performances for pre-schoolers to pre-teens and their families. Family resource exhibitors, from health care facilities to nannies, tutors, libraries, kids’ gyms and more, also will be on hand.
Crowd favorites will return, including the Big Top mainstage, showcasing performers such as Juggling Jeff, magician Brent Lowenstein, Tekno Bubbles and EVERYDAYCIRCUS, as well as interactive attractions like the Reptile Experience. Kid City also will debut new attractions, such as My Plate, an activity highlighting the healthy new version of the Food Pyramid; NFL Play 60 Challenge, featuring workouts on inflatables with the St. Louis Rams; and an Art & Reading Nook, where kids can get creative. Additional attractions include the Kid City Hospital ER exhibit, to familiarize kids and parents with the process of an ER trip; Bicycle & Safety Town, a life-size cityscape to help families with street safety; Ready, Set, Recycle!, where kids learn about what can be recycled; and a Kid’s Credit Union, to teach kids how to save, spend and share money. “Everything is engaging parents with their kids, and hopefully everyone will walk away learning something new,” Wildman explains. Continued on page 84
ON THE COVER: The free, family-focused attraction, Kid City, will feature interactive activities, exhibits and performances at Taste of St. Louis from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21 in Chesterfield Central Park. For more information, call 548-6101 or visit stlkidcity.com.

THE DOCTOR IS IN
Moms & Dads Know Best
P
ARENTHOOD IS A MIX OF JOY AND concern—joy at the gift of your precious child, and concern that he is growing and developing normally. It’s normal to wonder about your child’s progress and compare him to other children. Most babies reach their developmental milestones at or around the expected time, but identifying a potential problem is important. There are several areas of development: gross motor, fine motor, communication and language, self-help and social. Gross motor skills such as sitting or walking are the easiest to see. Some examples of fine motor skills are grasping and using a crayon. Understanding language is an example of a ‘receptive’ language skill, while speaking is related to ‘expressive’ development. Self-help skills include toileting and dressing, while social skills include facial recognition, making eye contact and playing with others. Development typically occurs in a progressive manner: Children crawl before they stand and stand before they walk, babble before they speak, and understand spoken sentences before they put them together themselves. Children develop at individual rates and in different ways. One child may be very verbal but slower to walk, while another may be climbing on furniture but slower to speak. Both are probably normal. Various studies have suggested that 10 to 15 percent of children younger than 3 have a delay in development in one of the five identified areas. There are several ‘red flags’ that suggest a child is delayed and should be evaluated. Be aware of these and talk to your doctor if your child is: • Not smiling in response to your smile, or not reaching for objects and grasping them by 4 to 5 months of age • Not rolling in either direction by about 7 months of age • Not sitting independently, crawling, engaging in interactive gesture games (like ‘peeka-boo’ or ‘so big’), or babbling consonants (ba-ba, ga-ga) by about 1 year of age • Not walking or using at least one word appropriately (like ma-ma to mom, or da-da to dad) by 18 months. • Not using 12 to 15 words, two-word phrases (e.g. Go out, Daddy go), or following simple instructions (Come here!) by 2 years of age • Not interested in social interaction of play by age 2 to 3
BY DR. JOSEPH KAHN
ONE CHILD MAY BE VERY VERBAL BUT SLOWER TO WALK, WHILE ANOTHER MAY BE CLIMBING ON FURNITURE BUT SLOWER TO SPEAK. BOTH ARE PROBABLY NORMAL. •
howing these behaviors at any time or age: S uses one side of the body more than the other, loses skills that were previously present, does not startle to loud sounds or seems to not hear you, shows continual violent behaviors
If you do notice any of these things or have another concern about your child’s development, please talk to your child’s doctor. You don’t need to wait until your child’s next routine doctor’s visit. Your doctor may perform specific testing, or may refer you to a child neurologist or developmental specialist for additional evaluation. Mercy Kids Child Development and Therapy Center is an excellent resource available to you and your physician. In addition, your child’s doctor should perform routine developmental screening at each well-child visit with more formal screenings at the 9-, 18-, and 24- to 30-month visits. Advocate for your child and expect your child’s doctor to listen to your concerns and act on them. One thing I learned in 30 years of practice is that moms (and dads) know their children best!
Dr. Joseph Kahn is president of Mercy Kids (mercykids.org), an expansive network of pediatric care dedicated to meeting the needs of every child, every day.

Line I Love: Vince
I’M TYPICALLY A PRETTY PLAIN-JANE girl when it comes to jewelry. I like my gold, and I wear practically the same pieces every single day. So, I was surprised when I was instantly drawn to these fun and colorful Mary Louise beaded necklaces at Vie. Available in a variety of lengths and hues, they add sparkle to any outfit. Made with multi-colored roundels and 22-karat gold-dipped nuggets, these are the perfect everyday necklaces. I would layer them up for a more Bohemian feel that looks chic with just a simple T-shirt and jeans. They range in price from $250 to $350. Mary Louise necklaces, available at Vie.
I THINK MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT FALL FASHION IS THE CLASSIC FEEL OF THE CLOTHES. While trends are always important, fall is the time of year to buy your key pieces and stick to the timeless look of great fabrics, and chic and easy style. That’s one of the reasons I love Vince. Founded in Los Angeles in 2002 as a collection of women’s knits and cashmere sweaters, the line has evolved into a multi-channel brand encompassing both women’s and men’s wear, denim, footwear and accessories. The feel is modern but timeless, and has an effortless sophistication that attracts all ages and styles. Vince knit-wear is unparalleled, and the company’s new venture into the footwear market is causing a buzz, with its flats and sneakers becoming the shoes that all the cool girls are wearing. This is the ultimate brand for everyday luxury essentials. Vince is available at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue

What’s News in Fashion BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN
ST. LOUIS HAS A REPUTATION FOR CLASSIC, preppy fashion, so it only makes sense that a St. Louisan be behind such a line. Enter Brooke Schultz. Schultz, a Kirkwood native who currently resides in Brentwood, worked in sales, marketing and media for almost 20 years before she created B The Collection. Full of classic staples like equestrian prints, grosgrain ribbon and bright colors, the colorful fashion line is now moving into its second seasonal collection. “I wasn’t finding classic-cut clothing out on the market with different whimsical, preppy prints,” Schultz explains. “I had this vision that I can do this. I decided one day to approach my husband… and he was fully on-board. We didn’t have any fashion, per se, experience, but we do have business, sales and marketing. We came to the fashion world a little differently than most.” Schultz started perusing local fabric shops and searching for the team her line would need. Six months later, the collection was at market. Currently available around St. Louis—and the country—is the B The Collection fall/winter collection. The FW14 line includes five coordinating pieces: the Timeless Tunic, Snappy Shift, Club Pant, Social Skirt and Clubhouse Cardigan with shell. New spring/summer items include
Brooke Schultz
some updated fall pieces, as well as a tunic with a rounded collar, polo shirts, Bermuda shorts and the Darling Dress, which features darting at the waist and a kicky hem. “We’re shooting for next fall to have all custom B prints,” Schultz says. “Each print will be exclusive to B; right now, we have two of those.” Other longterm goals for the company include expanding the
line and creating B Men, B Minnies (kids), B Home and more. Schultz says the response thus far has been “crazy, it’s fantastic. I’m such an emotional gal; I get tears in my eyes every time I see it on people. It is so different seeing it on my customers than seeing it in a picture or on a hanger.” bthecollection.com

Sisters Chris Conley and Ann Meyer always talked about opening a boutique together. The idea simmered for years, as the siblings worked together in real estate, and each began her own family. It wasn’t until 2010, when the selfdescribed “serial shoppers” decided to take the plunge. Never Enough was born. At first, the business was based in Conley’s home—clothes were in the living room, jewelry in the dining room. The team did 18 charity shows the first year, and was met with amazing success. “Then, it was, OK, what are we doing?” Conley says. “My living room was full of boxes. So we put on our big-girl pants, and said, We’ve got this.” The sisters opened their Webster Groves storefront, doing it with their own flair. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September through December and March through May. “Five years ago, our kids were a lot younger,” Meyer says. “We worked [the store’s schedule] around our kids’ schedule.” Mostly carrying smaller and lesser-known brands, the store is “a mix of trendy and contemporary fashions that aren’t going to break your bank,” Meyer says. Shoppers can find a head-to-toe look, from shoes and denim to a blouse and jewelry. But it’s the service and styling advice, the sisters say, that customers really appreciate. “[They ask], How should I wear this? or, Do I tuck it in? What do I wear underneath? What kind of shoes?,” Conley says. “They trust our taste, service, selection and price—and the atmosphere. It’s always a party in here.” 5 1 N. SAINT LOUIS FASHION FUND
A Very Stylish Cause BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN

F
ALL IS IN THE AIR—OR IT IS AT NEIMAN Marcus, at least! The Saint Louis Fashion Fund was celebrated at the recent Neiman Marcus Trend Event, during which the organization’s board members acted as stylists and created fall looks on mannequins on display. Guests and models mingled around Neiman Marcus sipping drinks, sampling local bites and trying autumn beauty looks while DJ TrashTalk set the mood with music. In addition to NM’s fashion-forward sweet treats—is any dessert more chic than macarons?—area eateries The Salted Pig, Mathew’s Kitchen and 612 Kitchen & Cocktails served food. Local artists Michelle Volansky and Johanna Cielo did live fashion sketches of looks and items on display. The focal points of the evening were the Fashion Fund mannequins. On her display, Susan Sherman accessorized a purple frock with a statement necklace and studded heels. Boo McLoughlin’s mannequin was winter-ready with its puffer vest, Prada belt and midi dress. Mary Ann Srenco created a black-and-white look with a textured jacket, bejeweled top and black skinny trousers. Dorte Probstein also used skinny black trousers, but threw in a blushing pink sweater and statement necklace, layered over a white buttondown with a popped collar. Susan Barrett’s theme was clearly layers, as she styled a dress over a dress—plus a jacket, shirt, two necklaces and a belt. Paula Reed threw a petite fur over a patterned cocktail dress, and finished it off with a YSL clutch. Pat Whitaker made the crop top ageappropriate for all by layering a long-sleeved crop top over a long metallic shirt and polka-dot pencil skirt. Amy Soper combined peep-toe booties with a cross-body bag and thick green outerwear. Showcasing stylish menswear, Jacob Laws dressed up ankle-banded pants with a blue velvet tuxedo jacket and short boots. Ken Stuckenschneider paired a quilted jacket with a colorful tee, graphic button-down, statement belt and patent sneakers. In the end, Susan Block’s outfit reigned supreme and took home the favorite stylist award—an honor based on attendee votes and the amount of guests brought to the event. Block balanced a painterly skirt (think Piet Mondrianmeets-Jackson Pollock) with thick jewelry, a fur collar and patent pearl-accent booties. For her efforts, Block received a $350 gift card from Neiman Marcus representatives, who also made a donation to the Fund. On the horizon for the Fashion Fund is its inaugural dinner gala at Saint Louis Union Station on Friday, Oct. 17.

Skin Deep
LN looks we love BY BLAISE HART-SCHMIDT
BY LISA WATSON
Q&A Q&A with Poppy King, founder of Lipstick Queen
The statement lip is back! And who better to teach us how to wear this glamorous trend than the appropriately named Poppy King? The founder of Lipstick Queen, this 20-year industry veteran hails from Melbourne, Australia. We got her take on finding the right lipstick to transform your look. How did you originally get into the beauty industry? The thing that got me started was actually the massive absence of what I myself wanted as a consumer: proper lipstick! Lipstick that transformed you. Lipstick that could make you feel like anything was possible. When I launched my first lipstick brand in the early ’90s, there simply wasn’t anything like what I had experienced when trying on the lipsticks my mother brought back home after her trips to London in the ’70s. Now, that was lipstick! Those rich, matte formulas were so powerful and so glamorous, and yet they had completely disappeared from view. I realized if I wanted to wear lipstick like that, I was going to have to make it happen myself!
Byrd Designer Consignment Boutique 8825 Ladue Road, 721-0766, byrdstyle.com This Yves Saint Laurent vintage necklace is a statement-making must-have for lovers of vintage designer pieces. An iridescent heliotrope headlight crystal on a gold-link chain, the piece is also signed and numbered (206 of 500).
Tell us why you founded Lipstick Queen. I’ve always thought of lipstick as my version of a superhero’s cape— you put it on and you feel like you can conquer the world! I founded Lipstick Queen with the mission to show every woman the true magic of lipstick. While other cosmetics correct, conceal or enhance, lipstick stands alone in its ability to transform not only your look, but also your sense of self. What color trends are you most excited for this fall? Fall’s most exciting trend has got to be the bold, glossy statement lip! An ultra-glamorous wet-look lip in a dramatic, eye-catching shade has never been more en vogue. When I designed the shades for my fall collection, Silver Screen, I did so as an homage to old Hollywood sassiness; and developed a dazzling formula, enriched with the groundbreaking new ingredient, pomegranate sterols, that makes a color-rich, yet sumptuously glossy, lipstick possible.
Laurie’s Shoes 9916 Manchester Road, 961-1642; St. Louis Galleria, 862-7463; Chesterfield Mall, 636-532-0017, lauriesshoes.com Be bold and bright this school year, with hot kicks in a rainbow of colors from Laurie’s Shoes.
How do you find the best lipstick for you? When it comes to pinpointing the best shades for your complexion, my advice is just keep trying! The right shade will light up your whole face, as if the sun has come out from behind a cloud. However, if the shade isn’t right for you, it’ll make it look as if the sun has gone back behind that cloud. Also, if you’re not used to wearing a bold color, give yourself time to get used to seeing yourself in it. Wear it around the house and get comfortable—like breaking a pair of heels in! How can you use lipstick to create a statement look? The best way to use lipstick to create a statement look is to work your makeup around your lip color. Apply very simple eye makeup: a little black liner, great mascara and a neutral eye shadow. Let the lipstick shade be the statement color and surround it with simple classics elsewhere in your makeup. You won’t feel too overdone and your lips will do all the talking!

BARRE WORKOUTS
Dance Moves BY CONNIE MITCHELL
T
HE ‘BALLET BARRE’ USED TO BE JUST FOR dancers. And it was no coincidence that those dancers had amazing bodies. Now, an increasing number of women and men are discovering ‘barre workouts,’ which bring the principles of dance movement to an exercise-class environment. Yet experts emphasize that barre workouts are not just for people with dance experience. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 75, a turboathlete or haven’t worked out in years, have back pain or a knee injury, are pregnant or just had a baby, barre will help you lose weight, build strength and transform your entire body,” says Melissa Stolze of barre3 St. Louis. Heidi Yates of Pure Barre Ladue, which will open this fall, agrees. “You become stronger with each class, and are able to challenge yourself in different ways. I love to see someone who has taken 500 classes shaking and changing their body right next to someone who is doing the same on only their second class.” Classes use the ballet barre for some portion of
the workout, but not all moves rely on the barre as a prop. The routine focuses on small, intense, isometric movements that tax the muscles completely before stretching them out, creating the long, lean profile of a dancer. “Some exercises can be done at home using the back of a chair or an at-home barre, however, nothing is quite like the atmosphere in a studio,” Yates says. “Each teacher is highly trained to motivate you to be your best, perform hands-on corrections to ensure you are in your best form, and push you to achieve the results that you envision.” Recognizing that many people want at-home options, barre3, a national chain, offers a mobile app that takes users through 10-minute routines. Each movement uses a three-step sequence, Stolze explains. First, isometric holds work muscles to increase strength and endurance. Then controlled, 1-inch movements are added, “providing just enough relief to the muscles to maintain the integrity of the hold for maximum benefit. Layering on 1-inch movement heats the body, increasing core
strength and revving the metabolism.” Finally, largescale functional movements release the muscles. “This final cardio blast lifts the heart rate, revs the metabolism and energizes the body,” Stolze says. Yates’ enthusiasm is fueled by personal experience. “I aim for four to five classes weekly, and I am in the best shape of my life. My muscles are no longer bulky, which I found with other cardio exercises. My core is stronger than ever, and Pure Barre is the only thing that helped put my lower abs back into place after the natural strain of pregnancy. I find myself challenged with each and every class. That is quite a testament as I’ve taken almost 800 classes now,” she says. Like barre3, Pure Barre also is a national chain with locations across the country.

Is Pilates for You? By Connie Mitchell
H
ave you ever wondered if Pilates is for you? Karen Prechtl, owner of The Pilates and Yoga Center of St. Louis, admits Pilates has developed a somewhat elitist reputation in some circles, but she emphasizes that anyone of any ability can benefit from it. “In fact, Pilates can be very rehabilitative for people who have orthopedic problems or arthritis,” she says. Although Pilates is not a cure-all for every injury or physical condition, Kim Brinkmann, owner of Pure Pilates, is a living example of its potential benefits. A car accident left her with years of chronic neck and back pain. “After I started Pilates, I found my pain was decreasing, and now I’m pain-free,” she says. “I’m a lifelong believer. I’ll always do Pilates for my body and quality of life.” Pilates challenges the individual through small movements—many of which are done while reclining or sitting—that use body weight for resistance. It can help anyone improve his or her condition, Prechtl says, noting that her average client is older than 40. Brinkmann agrees and recalls clients in
their 70s when she taught Pilates in New York. “They had to stay in good shape to deal with the rigors of life in New York City, and Pilates keeps the body strong and flexible,” she says. Core abdominal muscles are the key focal point, and Pilates also integrates and enhances a mind-body awareness of proper postural alignment and symmetry. Not only does core strength help support and augment the muscles around the spine, but awareness of good posture and increased flexibility help protect against injury. Strength, flexibility and toning are the hallmarks of Pilates, Brinkmann says. And although Pilates videos have proliferated, she and Prechtl both urge people new to Pilates to get some experience with private sessions or small classes where trained instructors can gauge fitness, and help the individual develop and practice around goals and abilities. Some exercises are done on a mat, while others use specialized equipment. “People think it’s nothing because the movements are small, but they’re mighty,” Brinkmann says. “We tell people that 10 classes will make you feel better, and 20
will make you look better.” Prechtl recommends at least two classes per week, and advises clients to do some sort of additional cardiovascular exercise on their own. “We never forget where the client is,” Brinkmann adds. “I was really weak when I started doing Pilates, and was grateful to have an instructor who didn’t push me too hard in the beginning. We don’t over-train people.” Prechtl notes that many Pilates studios offer reduced-price assessments or a trial class so a new client can get a good overview of Pilates before making a commitment. “If you’re curious, go through a workout and see what you think,” she says. “And try more than one studio. Find a place that feels right to you.”

What is Your Beauty Routine? T
By Connie Mitchell
here’s lots of beauty advice out there, from magazines and advertisements to recommendations from friends. But what do the experts really do? Surely, those with the know-how have top-notch beauty and skin-care regimens. We asked two local aestheticians to share their personal beauty routines. Jeanine Schmuke, 31, of Go!Spa, uses only professional-grade products sold through spas or dermatologists’ offices, although she doesn’t necessarily adhere to one particular product line. “I find that a combination of SkinCeuticals and Image Skincare products work best for my skin,” she says. “These products really penetrate better and provide more benefit than drug-store products.” Schmuke’s morning and evening routines vary somewhat. Both begin with cleansing; but morning calls for a basic, gentle cleanser, while the evening cleanser exfoliates with glycolic acid to provide a deeper clean. The next step for daytime is an antioxidant serum, which both experts we spoke with say
would be the one product they would insist on if everything else had to go. “The serum contains vitamin C, and helps protect the skin from environmental damage and from the effects of free radicals in the cells themselves,” Schmuke says. A light, pore-minimizing moisturizer and eye cream follow for daytime use, while a moisturizer containing retinol, along with a retinol eye cream, are used at night. “At night, your skin is in repair mode while you sleep,” Schmuke explains. “The retinol helps with that process, preventing wrinkles and smoothing the skin’s texture.” Meg Ringo, an aesthetician with Pure Harmony Day Spa, is a few years older than Schmuke, and she emphasizes the importance of starting a good regimen at a young age. Like Schmuke, she uses an exfoliating cleaner so that her other products are able to better penetrate. Following cleansing, Ringo uses a toner to restore the pH of her skin, and to refresh and prepare the skin for the following steps. Antioxidant serum is the next component,
followed by a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. “This can change with the seasons,” she notes. “In winter, when the air is much drier, I might use a heavier moisturizer because my skin needs it.” Eye cream tops off Ringo’s routine. “I tend not to use retinol because it irritates my skin,” she says. Both Schmuke and Ringo also emphasize the importance of using sunscreen throughout the year; and note that every person’s skin is different, so skin-care regimens have to be individualized based on age, skin condition and special needs. “I know what works for me,” Schmuke says. “But it may not be right for someone else. That’s why it’s a good idea to have someone with education and training evaluate your skin and make specific recommendations.”

Specialty classic tipples aged in oak include the Negroni, Manhattan, Vieux Carre, Empire and the Vesper, aka the James Bond Martini. Also on the spirits front, local distillers Saint Louis Distillery, creator of Cardinal Sin Vodka, will soon be introducing Cardinal Sin Starka. This barrel-aged vodka, a traditional Eastern European spirit, is scheduled to be available in stores and bars across Missouri in early September. Cheers! Piccione Pastry in the Delmar Loop is now serving a collection of small-plate brunch items each Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in addition to their popular pastries. Items include Piccione Benedict, Italian Toast and Ricotta Pancakes, among other delectables. Larder & Cupboard, a specialty food store from Kakao Chocolate’s BRIAN PELLETIER, is coming to downtown Maplewood at 7310 Manchester Road. Look for an opening later this fall. Pelletier’s third Kakao location also just opened at 7700 Forsyth Blvd. in the Centene building. Big kudos go out to Fozzie’s Sandwich Emporium, which recently got a spot on Food & Wine magazine’s Best Sandwich Shops in the U.S list. Congrats!

Bishop’s Post
Comfort Done Right
S
EEMS LIKE EVERYONE IN THE RESTAUrant business is trying to cash in on the comfort food ‘trend,’ such as it is. There are plenty of places now hawking fried chicken, meatloaf and mac ‘n cheese. Not being big fans of culinary trends, it was with a little trepidation that we ventured west to Chesterfield to try out Bishop’s Post, which heavily promotes itself as a purveyor of comfort fare, albeit elevated. Thankfully, while the marketing verbiage may be tired, the food at Bishop’s Post most certainly isn’t. The restaurant itself is sprawling, with multiple dining rooms and a good-sized bar area, along with a large patio behind the building. We were seated in one of the back rooms, which afforded a really nice view of the patio and the landscaping surrounding it, including an impressive waterfall. Until recently being re-imagined and rebranded, Bishop’s Post was the West County location of Oceano Bistro. Thankfully, Chef Dave Rook, who had recently come aboard, stayed on during the change-over. His menu encompasses a variety of cuisine and culinary traditions, not just the Southern American fare (see the previous comment re: fried chicken) so often associated with the ‘comfort’ tag. Case in point, our trio of starters: an order of the Gremolated Encrusted Lamb Lollipops ($14), a cup of Dave’s Spicy Seafood and Andouille Sausage Gumbo ($6), and the Sweet Corn & Roasted Green Chili Tamale ($8). The lamb virtually fell off the bone, and the light breading added just the right amount of texture. But what really made this dish stand out was the savory olive and goat cheese spread served alongside, which added
BY SIDNEY LEWIS
an earthy element that really brought out the flavor of the meat. The gumbo, chock-full of chunks of sausage and shrimp, was also a cut above many of the versions available locally. And the masa dough that encased the pulled pork in the tamale was sweet and moist, no easy feat—trust us, there are plenty of dried-out tamales to be had around town. On to the mains, the Boneless Quail Breast Medallions ($30) and the Seared Viking Village Sea Scallops ($34). The quail was tender and juicy, sautéed in a decadent, rich white wine butter sauce, which also paired up perfectly with the fried spaghetti served on the side. The sea scallops are an interesting combo of sweet scallops poised atop individual jalapeno and white cheddar pancakes, giving some subtle heat and cheesy goodness, further complemented by a really flavorful roasted corn and charred tomato salsa. There’s also a solid wine selection at Bishop’s Post, and a small list of classic cocktails. We indulged in a Perfect Rye Manhattan ($10) before dinner, then paired the scallops with a glass of Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($10). The desserts at Bishop’s Post change frequently. Lucky for us one of our all-time favorites was on special during our visit: Gooey Butter Cake ($8). The crust was soft, blending in seamlessly with the rich, decadent center—one of the best versions of this St. Louis icon we’ve had in a good long while. If you can’t find something comforting at Bishop’s Post, you’re just not trying. 16125 Chesterfield Parkway, 636-536-9404, bishopspost.com

GAME ON!
AENEAS WILLIAMS
MR. GOLDEN
H
E PLAYED AGAINST THE greats of the game. He is one of the greats of the game. Last month, it was all confirmed in Canton. Aeneas Williams was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It surprised no one. When you go to eight Pro Bowls, make the 1990s All-Decade team, and intercept 55 passes and score nine touchdowns, you are worthy. It also didn’t hurt that Williams was often at his best on the biggest stages. In the Rams’ divisional playoff game in 2011, he returned two interceptions from Brett Favre for touchdowns and recovered a fumble. He ended Steve Young’s career with a hit, and often got the better of Hallof-Famer Michael Irvin. Usually in the NFL, there are two types of cornerbacks: You are either a cover guy who doesn’t tackle well, or vice-versa. Williams hit like a Mack truck and was all over wide receivers like a cheap suit. There was no better cornerback in his generation. There also is no better man. Twenty-three days after going into the Hall of Fame, he was on the steps of McCluer-South Berkeley High School. Aeneas brought his wife, Tracy, and 30 members of his Spirit Church. They were there to greet kids on the first day of school—kids from Ferguson who have had to endure too much this summer, and had already missed seven days of school. Aeneas was high-fiving, hugging and shaking hands with all these kids at 7:30 in the morning. As the sleepy kids got out of the car and approached the steps, they saw Aeneas, who was yelling, Where have you been? We have been waiting two weeks for you here!
BY FRANK CUSUMANO
Aeneas was a player. He is now a pastor, a father and a husband, and just one of the finest people I have ever met in sports. And although he played just four years here in St. Louis, he has made our town his home. And our town is fortunate because he’s here. Why did you go to the school? There’s just so much these kids have been through. We just wanted to come out, cheer them on, and put a blessing over them. Many Hall-of-Famers have regrets about their speeches, saying they left something out. How about you? I don’t have any. I was able to thank everybody, but I didn’t want it just to be a speech. There were millions of people watching, and I wanted to deliver a speech with the theme, ‘Begin With the End in Mind and Die Empty.’ It was very intentional as it pertains to my career. I wrote it down and sought out others in order to do it. God put potential in me, and I had to fulfill it. How is your life different now that you are in the Hall? People come up to me all the time now and ask for a picture, and tell me they have never been in the presence of a Hall-of-Famer. It’s just different when you show up at places now. Does your wife, Tracy, find you more attractive now? Anytime I am not doing well as a husband, I immediately go out and get that gold jacket on to get back to the good graces of my family. I am king for the moment. (laughs)
FIVE THINGS I THINK: 1. The toughest job in sports has to be the head coach of a major college football team. Imagine trying to get 85 testosterone-filled, 19- to 23-year-olds to behave when they are surrounded by girls, beer and drugs. Imagine how tough it is for you with just three or four kids in your house. 2. Mike Matheny may not be Whitey or TLR in terms of baseball strategy yet. However, it’s going to be three straight post-season appearances. There is no reason why he won’t be great. 3. Austin Davis is just a sprained ankle away from the being the Rams quarterback. Last year at this time, he was coaching kids at Westminster Christian Academy.
4. I went to the Pujols Family Foundation Golf Tournament. Albert may be long gone, but what his foundation does for local kids with Down syndrome should be noted. They’re also doing incredible things in the Dominican Republic, bringing medicine, clothes and supplies to the poor. 5. Fantasy Football is the most addictive thing in my life. My ball club, The Stallions, is time-consuming, but that victory each weekend makes it all worth it.

What have been the biggest changes in lipstick since you started in the industry? What we’re able to do in lipstick has come very far in 20 years. You can pack a lot of pigment into much lighter-feeling textures. Back when I first started in the lipstick business, getting a high-pigment, matte, opaque coverage formula meant the texture was very powdery and thick feeling. Now, pigment can be delivered in so many different forms, which means you get the coverage without the drying.

What are the differences people will notice between a high-quality lipstick and something you’d find in the drug store? Because of its talismanic qualities, I believe a lipstick should be anything but ordinary. So the packaging should be elegant, and application should feel effortless with a texture that’s intensely hydrating, as well as luxurious and protective. High-quality lipsticks will always last longer and, more importantly, feel so much better on your lips.

LLS continued from page 18 his eyes to the number of people stricken by blood cancers. “Our retired CEO, Tom Voss, was the chair three years ago, and he made me aware of the work LLS was doing in the community. Once I got involved, I would mention it and people would tell me about their relative or child who was affected.” The fundraising goal for this year’s Light the Night is $1.05 million, says Debbie Kersting, LLS’s executive director. The funds raised will all stay local and support the nonprofit’s efforts in the fields of research, patient support and advocacy, she notes. Great strides have been made in research in recent years, including a novel treatment that uses a form of the HIV virus that has been modified to help the immune system kill cancer cells. “Those patients were not responding to conventional therapies and had relapsed,” Kersting says. Of the 30 patients in the study, 27 are in complete remission two years later. In addition to supporting clinical research, LLS works to increase patient access to better treatment. The nonprofit was an advocate for oral chemotherapy parity legislation, which passed earlier this year. When it goes into effect Jan. 1, it will reduce the cost of oral cancer medications for many patients from thousands of dollars per month to only $75. Hailey’s recovery is a another great example of the progress, Kersting adds. “Back in 1964, a child’s chance of survival of ALL was 3 percent. Now it’s about 91 percent. We are getting there. But for those 9 percent of parents, it’s not fast enough. We want a cure today, not someday.”
