EDITOR MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH DANCE WAS AN AFTER-SCHOOL
program in Irish dance, taught by Sr. Rosario, the principal of my grade school. While the nuns who taught at our school could be strict and somewhat intimidating, these classes were a chance to see them in a different light, as we gradually progressed from counting the basic steps, to performing on stage at the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. And while many of us never went on to greater stages, I like to think that we all learned a thing or two about rhythm, poise and performing with a smile. In this week’s Arts & Culture section, we hear from Antonio and Kervin Douthit-Boyd, the new artistic directors of the Center of Creative Arts (COCA). Having graced stages around the world, the dancers left their careers as principal dancers at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre to take up their positions at COCA, where Antonio received some of his earliest dance training. Both trace their love of dance back to their very first class. Hundreds of students have likewise had their first exposure to the arts at COCA and similar institutions around St. Louis, and while many of those students won’t wind up traveling the world to perform before huge crowds, who can say where the experience will lead? Turn to page 70 for the Douthit-Boyds’ story.

100 years CELEBRATING
W
ebster University was founded in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto as one of the first women’s colleges west of the Mississippi. The upcoming black-tie Centennial Gala on Nov. 14 celebrates the growth and changes that have occurred in the century since. Much has happened in the past 100 years, but the mission has stayed the same: to serve people who may not otherwise have access to quality education. That’s why this celebratory gala will be a “gala with a purpose,” with proceeds to benefit the Webster University Next Century Leaders Scholarship Fund. This fund provides critical support to Webster students and can help relieve students of the need for second jobs and excess financial aid loans, allowing them to devote more concentrated attention to their academic work. Beth Stroble, the president of Webster University, says the evening is all about celebrating the university’s major milestone, while contributing to a good cause. “It’s going to be a black-tie affair,” she says. “It’s a culmination event to celebrate 100 years of service to our students.” The evening will include great storytelling about Webster, both through videos and speakers, Stroble notes. Entertainment will be provided by actress and Webster alumna Jenifer Lewis. “She’s had such an amazing career in film and stage and is such a dynamic performer,” Stroble says. “(Lewis) has created a scholarship here, and we’re so proud to have her as part of our evening.” Lewis grew up in Kinloch and likes to come home and connect with the people she grew up around, Stroble adds. The evening will include other special guests and Webster “superstars” and will recognize the university’s Daniel Webster Society visionary award winners. Stroble says she is “so grateful” to event chair Marilyn Fox, who has been a long-time Webster trustee and is “personally very generous to our students through scholarship money.” This milestone marks the university as an institution with “staying power and fidelity to the mission and the community,” Stroble explains. “It’s a time to look to the future, too, and make sure that we continue to welcome talented students and students who may need financial assistance.” Going into the future, Stroble says the university is set to serve its students both near and far. “For the next 100 years, we want to continue to meet the educational needs of people in this region and around the world,” she says.

ELEMENTS
A COLLECTIVE DINING ROOM
Robyn Dexter
W
hen clients are both on their second marriages, they often task their designer with combining elements from two households. Such was the case for this luxurious villa, where Teddy Karl, Allied ASID, of The Great Cover-Up worked with a couple to bring their former households together in this elegant dining room. The mahogany shield-back chairs from Jansen and hickory table are new, but the artwork, hutch and sideboard came from previous homes. The luxurious flooring is a hand-knotted Persian rug that goes with the velvet chairs. Karl says the shade over the windows is woven grass and bamboo, and it was chosen “to offset the formal look of the space.” The designers started with the Persian rug and worked their way up from there in the designing process, Karl recalls. “We knew it was going to be very formal,” he says. “The wallpaper they chose was the first one they saw. They absolutely fell in love with it.” Since the clients have adult children from previous marriages, they wanted a space where they could pull the leaves out of the table and entertain guests and their extended family. “It’s a peaceful space,” Karl says.

Design Speak A Q&A with Sara Turner-Luigs
F
rom the comfort of a charcoal linen, tufted modern bench with silver nail-head trim in her contemporary office – complete with two Louis XVI Ghost Chairs, an Arco floor lamp and a linear electric fireplace – Sara Turner-Luigs can dream up designs to her imagination’s content. LN recently spoke with the owner and design director of CURE DESIGN GROUP about the style footprint she is making on St. Louis. What led you to the design field? Honestly, I feel that design chose me...I have always been enthralled with the style industry, and coming from fashion and being drawn into interiors was a natural transition. Everyone should live a stylish life, from what they wear every day to how they live in their home. I love being a part of that expression of their lifestyle re-imagined. How competitive is today’s design field? The design field is more challenging now than ever. The industry is saturated at the moment, and unique products are harder to find. Not to say that local designers are competing with each other, but rather competing with the growing online market of lowquality and mass-produced furniture. Anyone can buy a piece of furniture; however, only a designer adds the collected layer, perfectly pairing selected pieces to style a space to make the client feel he or she wouldn’t want

live anywhere else. Tell us about some of your recent projects. When approached by Hollywood Casino St. Louis with the challenge of transforming an old restaurant space, we instantly had a vision: tuxedo meets barn. CURE associate designer Melanie Christoff and I wanted a combination of a sleek and swanky vibe for a beer house. We added a game area with chalkboard walls, a stone surround to the existing brick columns and continued a gorgeous coffer ceiling down the opposite
column wall. The kicker was to open up the front of the space with two oversized black garage doors. For another project – a contemporary home nestled back in St. Louis County – we created an open mega-kitchen with great natural light, double-islands, seating areas and a bar that opens to the great room. We used custom-made furniture and cabinets, and a double-island featuring two surfaces: a butcher block and unforgettable marble. Creating an uber-chic space doesn’t happen on its own – it takes intricate design, research and planning. What challenges do designers face today? The need and desire to grow, change and be inspired. We need to be challenged just as any other professional. We try not to succumb to trends that our clients will tire of quickly; but, rather, design with evolved concepts and express the lifestyle of our clients. We design not only for ourselves, but collaborate with clients to create a unique and stylish environment. What is your dream design project? I would love for our team to design a resort or hotel! I would like to take a raw concept for a lifestyle resort somewhere exotic, and create it from concept to completion. How amazing would it be to vacation at a resort that you designed and styled? 636-294-2343, curedesigngroup.com

S
ince the design of our iconic Gateway Arch in the 1960s by Mid-Century architecture pioneer Eero Saarinen, the design style has become a staple in the St. Louis area. While the treasured monument reflects more of his flair for the neofuturistic aesthetic, Saarinen also created top-quality pieces recognized for their mix of modernity and functionality, like the tulip chair, with its contemporary materials, space-age shape and flowing lines. Delve into the splendor of Mid-Century, and discover how this architectural element has evolved into a truly significant design movement. The style began sometime in the 1930s, but skyrocketed in popularity during the 1950s. “One thing happened in the ’50s: The technology improved and you could have big, floor-to-ceiling picture windows. You could do more interesting things with
architecture, like horizontal beams and cantilevered overhangs,” says Ted Wight, a real estate agent at Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty. “People started moving to the suburbs, and not the cities with their vertical space.” He notes that the additional space found outside of urban areas allowed for a better flow throughout houses, making the design of homes less formal. This dramatic change allowed architects to explore new ideas and take their construction to a whole new level. Frank Lloyd Wright became a familiar name, as did the furniture designer George Nelson, creator of the still-popular bubble lamps constructed from membrane-covered wire-formed shapes, among others. The clean lines and bold style in lighting and furniture design still remain prominent today. “The style is best incorporated when it is updated,” says
designer David Deatherage. “You can do this with fabrics, by taking vintage pieces and upholstering them with new fabric. A lot of these designs are still in production, but you can make the original designs more usable today with restoration.” Mid-Century homes still reign supreme in St. Louis with architectural stunners by Isadore Shank, Harris Armstrong and of course, William Bernoudy. Bernoudy is well-known for his distinctive designs, and it’s no wonder, since he learned from the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright and practiced here in St. Louis from the 1950s through the 1980s. “Bernoudy is known for the serpentine brick wall and arches found at the Forest Park entrance of the Saint Louis Zoo. He’s prolific in the area, due to custom residential projects primarily, including many vacation homes in Arizona and Long Island, as well as the Bahamas,” Wight says.
LadueNews.com | September 11, 2015 23
Wight himself lives in one of the spectacular Bernoudy houses. “This home was lived in by Bernoudy himself, and it’s truly an architect’s home. He didn’t have to worry about what a client wanted – it was all about what he wanted. Since he built it for himself, he had no limitations.” Wight says Bernoudy homes are in a class of their own. Each one was custom-built, combining the exterior spaces with the interior spaces in a thoughtful blend. He incorporated hardscaping, the process of designing a landscape with non-plant elements, and window walls with the intent of bringing the outside in. “The hallmark of his homes are the indirect coved lighting, vaulted ceilings, builtin bookcases and expansive patios,” Wight says. Deatherage, a contemporary designer, still finds ways to enhance Mid-Century elements in his designs. “I’m not limited to Mid-Century style. My philosophy
24 LadueNews.com | September 11, 2015
is completely customized to the client and their space. I try to work closely with clients, so they will have a strong connection to the pieces we select,” Deatherage says. “With Mid-Century homes, using period pieces and updating them is beneficial. The furniture is scaled appropriately, whereas modern furniture is made oversized for their interiors. Mid-Century furniture is low and linear, working well with vaulted ceilings.” The designer’s versatility has caught the eye of noticeable names, who appreciated his keen sense of style and how he defines a space with key pieces. For example, take Deatherage’s design from the Ladue News Bernoudy Show House from the fall 2012 edition of Elegant Living. The striking blue desk by Paul McCobb featured on the front cover caught the eye of Paul McCartney, who purchased the piece.
Another gorgeous item by Tommi Parzinger featured porcelain nail heads with metal ring handles, and the pink lacquered sideboard was snapped up by none other than Courteney Cox. Deatherage doesn’t stop at reinventing amazing furniture items – he custombuilds pieces as well. “I worked on a Bernoudy house last year, and the client needed a sleeper sofa available for company. It’s difficult to find an attractive one, so we built one instead.” As is evident by the expansion of this singular style, Mid-Century design is not going away anytime soon. The expansive spaces and flowing lines appeal to generation after generation. Whether you recognize the style throughout the city, or simply down the street on your block, this expressive aesthetic is sure to catch your eye.

HOME BEAUTIFUL: Feature Story SAVVY SURROUNDING STYLE
Mixing itUp
W
By Robyn Dexter
hen Chrissy, a successful young fashion designer and her fiancé, Jon, purchased a condo in a chic Central West End high rise, they knew that they wanted the interior to reflect their eclectic tastes and creativity. But pulling their many interior design ideas together into a cohesive and beautiful whole proved to be a challenging task. After meeting with Kimberly Kowalski, a designer with Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue, the couple knew right away that they had nothing to worry about. “Chrissy is a highly creative person,” Kowalski says. “She is full of great ideas; all she needed was someone to take those ideas and make them work together in a pleasing way.” Kowalski’s challenge was to effectively marry the couple’s penchant for myriad design styles, creating an eclectic and stylish environment that feels old and new at the same time. Starting with the dining room, and building on Chrissy’s and Jon’s love for color contrasts, especially black and white, Kowalski began to layer in furniture pieces, accessories and other design elements that reflect the couple’s interest in mixing styles and adding personality to their spaces. “It’s all about blending,” Kowalski says. “You have elements that are traditional, contemporary, ethnic and industrial, all in one room.” An eye-catching black-and-white mosaic accent wall, reminiscent of Moroccan tile, is a striking first impression upon entering the condo. “It’s actually paint,” says Kowalski, “and was finished in just one day!” For those with ever-changing tastes, paint is a perfect choice for bold design decisions. “It’s not difficult to work with and is easily changed when you are inspired to try something new. It’s nice to have that versatility,” Kowalski adds. Juxtaposed with the contemporary and global feel of the accent wall is a gorgeous, classic three-tiered, beaded, teardrop chandelier that glistens above the industrial, reclaimed, wood top dining table, which is surrounded by classic contemporary metal chairs. Originally three separate chandeliers, Kowalski commissioned a local electrician to combine them into one piece at the top. “I really enjoy using over-scale lighting” says Kowalski. “People often hesitate to go bigger (when it comes to lighting), but the larger scale really draws your eye into the space more,” she says. Kowalski chose a jute rug in a quiet earth tone to ground the space beneath the dining table and add softness to the bolder black-and-white palette. “The earthiness of the rug introduces a natural design element and texture to the space,” says Kowalski, “and helps balance the strong, graphic pattern of the accent wall.” According to Kowalski, space was a major consideration when designing the dining room. “The room’s smaller footprint dictated certain decisions, such as using ottomans at the ends of the table instead of chairs. “We didn’t want to lose a lot of visual space,” explains Kowalski, “so the ottomans were an ideal solution. They can even be pulled into the living room for extra seating.” Floating shelves instead of a typical cabinet also add to the airiness of the room and are filled with the couple’s collection of quirky, fun accessories. Windows were left undressed to take full advantage of the beautiful views of Forest Park and the bustling city streets below. Chrissy, who is looking forward to the opening of her vegan leather jacket boutique, Fauxgerty, in her Central West End neighborhood this fall, couldn’t be happier with the way Kowalski interpreted her’s and Jon’s creative aesthetic, making their interior design dreams into a reality. “Chrissy’s and Jon’s dining room, in fact their entire condo, has a clean aesthetic, and is a little bohemian, too,” says Kowalski. “The magic is all in the mix,” she adds, “taking disparate styles and helping them connect in a beautiful and functional way. That’s really what is so fun about this space.” 314-432-7289, savvyladue.com

MERRILL HERMANN’S DEBUTANTE PARTY Bobby, Signa, Bob and Merrill Hermann, Lacey and Charlie Petersen
BALL
By Lisa de los Reyes, Photos by Patti Gabriel Photography As the reigning Queen of Love and Beauty crowned at last December’s Veiled Prophet Ball, Merrill Hermann was fêted at a recent debutante party thrown at the family’s home. The event had a Buddha Ball theme, which came about organically, notes Merrill’s mother, Signa Hermann. “When Merrill was a little girl, she came home from the hospital with a tiny stuffed pink elephant, and this became her most cherished creature that she dragged around with her throughout childhood,” she says. “So somehow an elephant had to appear.” When Hermann saw an article on an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, the theme gradually began to take shape. One of the event’s signature decorations was a large-as-life elephant topiary created by Ken Miesner’s Flowers with help from a Tennessee-based manufacturer. “Ken was brilliant with his decorations,” Hermann recalls. “Now [the elephant] is planted in the garden and he’ll always be part of it.” Other showstoppers included whimsical umbrellas hanging from the tented ceiling. Dinner was prepared by Butler’s Pantry and announced by Chinese drummers, and guests enjoyed the musical stylings of Dave Dickey Big Band and Party on the Moon, an Atlanta-based dance band.

JOHNNA BECKHAM OF JOHNNA MARIE
By Lisa de los Reyes
For some 22 years, Johnna Beckham traveled across the country and the world as a medical professional. During that time, she wore suits on a daily basis, but had a tough time finding high-quality, professional custom clothing that was wrinkle-free and convenient for traveling. Determined to fill the gap she saw in the clothing market, she launched St. Louisbased Johnna Marie in January. Describe how Johnna Marie works. It’s a really new concept for how you can shop. The whole goal is to create personalized clothing for you. We take measurements, which are put in your profile in our system, and a technical designer uses them to create a pattern for you. The pattern is sent via email to me, and we do all the cutting and sewing here in St. Louis. To get the measurements, we can come to your home or your office, or you can come to our office and see how we produce the clothing. We also hold what we call “Measure Me” events for groups of women. They’re a lot of fun – we bring wine and chocolate, and you can mingle and shop. Why did you choose to specialize in suits and suit separates? Just from my own experience, if you find a pair of slacks that you love, you either a have to buy them in every color, or buy four to five different pairs because they’ll be out of them by the time you go back to buy more. There’s never anything consistent and the sizing system is difficult to gauge. Most professional women are incredibly busy – they’re on the road on a consistent basis. If we can make it convenient and personal, then we’ve achieved what we’re trying to do. Another thing that makes our jackets unique is you can personalize them with numerous lining and button options, and from season to season the fabric will change, but the design and the fit will be the same. You get that replication of the fit that you like. Finding something that fits is half the battle. I used to do triathlons, and it was more frustrating to shop than it was for me to train for a triathlon. Why is a customized fit so important? It doesn’t matter what size or shape a woman is: I’ve not met one that hasn’t said, “I have difficulty finding clothes.” I don’t care what size they are. It’s everybody. I have one girl, she’s 6 feet tall, she’s gorgeous – and you think, “How can you have problems finding clothes to wear?” But she has trouble finding pants or jackets where the sleeves are long enough. If you’re the only woman going into a board meeting, and your outfit fits well, it’s amazing how the confidence level can rise. You feel confident no matter what. If you look good, you feel good. Too many times, I’ve ben put in a situation where I’ve been afraid of not looking the part – you don’t have to feel that way. johnnamarie.com, 314-548-9309

oo often, when the words fashion and style are mentioned, our first thoughts are of beautiful women walking the runways and posing on magazine covers. Yet in the past decade there has been a not-so-quiet resurgence of interest in clothing and personal style from men all over the world. The Internet now provides a continuous stream of inspiration and options for stylish men, allowing people to discover pieces that once may have been out of reach. To highlight how men in St. Louis are taking their wardrobes to the next level, we pulled together a diverse group of highly accomplished professionals to talk about their personal style.

Barton says. “And now clients have the potential to use it for larger gatherings.” After becoming the exclusive caterer of The Coronado in February, Butler’s Pantry also completed a $300,000 revitalization of the venue’s five unique spaces: the Grand Lobby, Grand Ballroom, South Ballroom, East Lounge and Bradshaw Room. Updated draperies, furniture, hardwood floors and chandeliers were added, as well as more modern touches, such as brighter paint and state-of-the-art LED fixtures. Originally opened as a hotel in 1925, The Coronado’s hand-painted ceilings, terrazzo floors and art deco lights were retained to preserve its classic grandeur. “It’s the epitome of opulence, and we didn’t change that – we just enhanced it,” Barton asserts. “It has really breathtaking spaces to create the event of your dreams.” Butler’s Pantry’s most recent project, Joule, opens this weekend. The former power plant in Lafayette Square underwent a $400,000 transformation into a modern event space, while keeping its industrial
roots. The unique new space, which can accommodate 300 guests for cocktails and 140 for a seated dinner, will play host to corporate events, weddings and receptions, holiday parties and nonprofit fundraisers. Joule can be booked alone, or in conjunction with Butler’s Pantry’s nearby Palladium Saint Louis. Butler’s Pantry offers a unique menu at each venue, or fare can be customized. The Piper Palm House menu features some classic, Butler’s Pantry favorites, while The Coronado’s menu speaks to a more formal, multi-course seated dinner. Joule’s vibe is a little funkier, with food stations and late-night snacks more prominently featured. According to Jeanne Whitworth, Butler’s Pantry’s vice-president of sales and catering, rave reviews are in for the renovations. As the company nears the half-century mark, there is no doubt that it has made an indelible mark in the landscape of St. Louis history. 314-664-7680 ∙ butlerspantry.com

amily-owned catering and event planning company Butler’s Pantry has been part of St. Louis’ rich history for nearly 50 years. So when it came to renovating three beloved local venues, the longtime catering and event-planning company added modern touches while preserving historical elements at the Piper Palm House, The Coronado and Joule. “We wanted to take these iconic St. Louis venues and make them new and exciting again,” says Maggie Barton, vice-president of marketing and development at Butler’s Pantry. For almost 15 years, Butler’s Pantry has been the exclusive caterer of the Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park. Built in 1878, the Palm House is the oldest standing greenhouse west of the Mississippi River. With its last major renovation in 1996, the venue was in need of a refresh. Early this year, a $50,000 kitchen rehab was completed, and the event space was opened up to accommodate 180 seated dinner guests. “It’s such a lovely and sought-after venue for wedding ceremonies, receptions and more,”

Connect the Dots
Courage IN SEARCH OF
By Benjamin Ola. Akande
COURAGE IS LIKE A MUSCLE. THE MORE YOU EXERCISE IT, THE STRONGER IT GETS.
Winston Churchill called courage “the first of human qualities…because it guarantees all others.” High achievement takes courage. “Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly,” John F. Kennedy once said. More than 140 years ago, the United States became the world’s wealthiest country. It reached that lofty pinnacle and has managed to sustain it because of the farsightedness and, more importantly, the courage of leaders in commerce and in government. These leaders included visionaries and risk takers like John Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, J. P. Morgan and Henry Ford. The vision of leaders in government created a climate that made it possible for these tycoons to thrive like they could nowhere else. But these public leaders also had the wisdom and the courage to check these titans when their interests clashed with those of the public. Sometimes, I worry that our collective courage as a people is withering. We don’t demand courage from our leaders and they don’t demand it from us. Consequently, too many leaders in the public and private sectors lack the courage to honor their obligations to others and sometimes fail to uphold essential values of leadership. Courage makes possible all the other virtues common to exceptional leaders: honesty, integrity, confidence, compassion and humility. Courage makes leaders. Leaders who lack courage are really not leaders. Without courage, all virtue is fragile – sought after and professed, but held cheaply and surrendered without a fight. We must have the courage to hold onto our beliefs, even in those moments when we face our toughest tests – not just when our beliefs align with others around us. Standing firm, even in the midst of vociferous opposition, gives us the courage of our convictions. Courage is not always certain or comprehensible, but it does demand great sacrifice. It unifies conscience, fear and action. Courage is the capacity to act despite our fears. Courage gives you the fuel to move forward and the guts to surmount obstacles. Only after overcoming these obstacles can you find the courage, as Eleanor Roosevelt put it, “to do the thing you think you cannot do.” We are all afraid of something. But even in the most trying times – an uncertain economy, job loss, global security crisis – fear should provide the opportunity for courage, not cowardice. Benjamin Ola. Akande is the 21st President of 164-year-old Westminster College in Fulton,

THAT IS THE QUESTION. By Dr. Joseph Kahn

ack-to-school season brings many challenges: Germsharing is one of them. How should you decide if your sick child is too sick for school or whether he can attend? Here are some tips.

FEVER: A temperature of 100.5 degrees or greater is considered a fever. Your child should remain home until he or she is fever-free for 24 hours and feels well enough to go to school. COUGH AND COLD SYMPTOMS: If your child feels well enough to participate in school activities and learning, have him go to school. If the symptoms include fever, then follow the advice above. VOMITING AND DIARRHEA: If your child has these symptoms, he is probably too sick to go to school and would spend the day in the bathroom anyway. Diarrhea sometimes lingers on with soft stools even when your child is feeling better, so you may need to ask your doctor about when to return. SORE THROAT: If your child has a sore throat but no fever and can eat and drink, then it’s OK to go to school. If he has strep throat, then he can return to school after 24 hours on antibiotics. PINK EYE: If the eyes are red and oozing a yellow/green discharge, then this could be infectious conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. You’ll need to call your doctor and keep your child home until this is cured with antibiotic eye drops. Slightly pink, itchy eyes with no or clear discharge probably signify allergies and are no reason to keep your child at home. RASH: This is the most complex symptom to address. Some rashes are part of a contagious illness; some are not. Some illnesses are contagious before the rash appears, and not when the rash is apparent. You will likely need to consult your child’s doctor to correctly diagnose the cause of rashes. One thing I’ve learned in more than 30 years of practice is that parents know their kids and have great instincts. The information above is intended to be general guidelines. Another great source of information is the symptom checker on healthychildren.org sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Use these tools, trust your instincts and call your doctor with any questions. Dr. Joseph Kahn is president of Mercy Kids (mercykids.org), an expansive network of pediatric care dedicated to meeting the needs of every child, every day. Dr. Diana Roukoz, Mercy Kids Pediatrician with Mercy Clinic Arnold, contributed to this article.

Farmer Girl Meats: I Heart Sausage By Diane Alt When Dave Matthews Band recently visited St. Louis for a summer gig at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, the band’s “people” did a little online research before their arrival. According to Farmer Girl Meats owner Leslie Moore, the band enjoys a local and sustainable approach to eating and while in town, they placed an order with Farmer Girl. The company takes an artisan approach to raising and producing healthy and grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. In addition to the cuts of pork, beef and poultry sold online through its website (farmergirlmeats.com), the company sells packages, including the I Heart Sausage Box. Available in both links and bulk (for patties), all of Farmer Girl’s sausages are made with heritage pasture-raised pork. The I Heart Sausage Box contains about five pounds of assorted sausages, in flavors like pork-apple, cherry, andoullie, chorizo and country-style breakfast sausage, among others.

Happily Ever After
and the
KUEHNER FAMILY By Lisa de los Reyes
ONCE UPON A TIME… FREDDY, A
4-month-old puppy, was found walking on Vandeventer Avenue. The rescuers took him to the Humane Society, where it was discovered that he had no microchip, and he was held for two weeks in case the owners called to retrieve him. “Kathy (Warnick, president of Humane Society of Missouri) is a friend of mine, and she knew that I had a history of having Wheaton terriers and that I was currently out of a dog,” Kim Kuehner says. “She told me he would be going up for adoption the next day and wouldn’t last long. I was there at 10 when they opened the doors. He came out and sat in my lap and started licking my face. It didn’t take two minutes for me to say, ‘Wrap him up, I’m taking him home.’ ” Kuehner has now owned Freddy for three months, and says, “Without a doubt, he’s the cutest puppy in the world. There just simply isn’t anybody who doesn’t stop us walking and say, ‘That is the cutest dog I have ever seen.’ I’ve had people shout it at me from across the street.” Freddy regularly joins Kuehner at his eponymous men’s sportswear store in Ladue, where he happily greets customers. “For 25 years, I’ve had dogs in that store, so when the last dog passed away, everybody wanted me to get a dog instantly, but I wasn’t ready,” Kuehner says. “When Freddy came to me, I put an ad in the newspaper and on the website to tell people to come meet him, and you can’t imagine how many people came in. The socialization with people has been so easy because there are so many people coming in and greeting him…He really has acclimated very well and
he has the friendliest personality.” Kuehner has a long history with the Humane Society. In fact, the Humane Society of Missouri Kuehner Center at Chesterfield Valley was endowed in honor of his parents, Horty and Howard Kuehner. “My parents loved dogs and my sister raised dogs, so as a memorial to them, we named that center after really the whole Kuehner family,” he says. “It’s been a tradition in my family, and the thought of having a dog in tough circumstances drove my mom and sister crazy.” He says the adoption process was even quicker and easier than he expected. “They made it so easy and were so friendly and caring about the dog. I was totally impressed from start to finish.” Breed: Originally thought to be a Wheaton terrier/ golden retriever mix, DNA tests show Freddy is mostly a briard. Age: 7 months

High on
WHISKY
touring in the Scottish Highlands Story and photos by Susan Katzman
LadueNews.com | SEPTEMBER 11, 2015

Tips for every taste I
f, like Mark Twain, you believe, “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough,” then the Scottish Highlands belongs on your bucket list. Whisky lovers are besotted with Highland whisky touring for good reasons. The Highlands boasts not only the greatest concentration of whisky distilleries in the world, but also distilleries said to produce the best single malt whiskys to be found anywhere in the world. Climate, soil, topography and other elements of terroir produce a staggering number of variations in Highland whiskys – all seductively begging to be sampled. And touring is intoxicatingly pleasurable, as
the Highland cup runneth over with glorious natural scenery and dramatically wonderful places to stay, play, eat and drink. Although one can hop on any number of organized group whisky tours, as well as take a shot at selfdriving along designated whisky trails, the ultimate Highland whisky adventure requires more. The ideal tour accommodates individual taste preferences, allows for drinking and driving and ensures stops at top spots for overnighting. Tourists wanting the best of the best should tap into Little’s Chauffeur Hire service and leave the driving to them. Little’s, a prestigious company headquartered in Glasgow, drives VIPs from all over the world and understands not only the spirit of the Highlands, but also the pleasures and preferences of the upper crust. If desired, in addition to driving, Little’s can design your whole trip, even booking hotels and distillery tours. Before drafting an itinerary, understand that the
Highlands is geographically Scotland’s largest whisky region and includes a multitude of microclimates in its major areas of whisky production. Each area (and indeed, each distillery in each area) produces whisky with different characteristics. Water, water everywhere influences West Coast distilleries. Rugged mountains and heather-covered moors impact whisky’s produced in the Central Highland. And the lush, fertile valley of the River Spey shapes the whisky’s of Speyside (where distilleries are clustered in such great abundance as to claim a region of their own). The cornucopia overflows to such an extent that it’s almost impossible to explore all in one visit. Bruce Webster, a Little’s chauffeur, golfer and allaround quintessential Scotsman, suggests that visitors short on time save Speyside for a separate trip and focus attention on distilleries in the lower Highlands. His recommended itinerary would includes visits to Auchentoshan, a Lowland distillery producing the only
The charming town of Oban, known as the Seafood Capital of Scotland and home of the Oban Distillery, one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland.
CAMERON HOUSE HOTEL ON LOCH LOMOND Located within a national park, just north of Glasgow, on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, the luxurious Cameron House resort sports a 27-hole golf complex, a pampering spa, four restaurants, a seaplane for touring, fabulous suites (especially the Whisky Suites), and a wonderful bar serving more than 260 different whisky’s, including 17 limited editions and one made by Auchentoshan purely for Cameron House.

Whisky is served to guests from a homey cart in the great room of the manor house. Incidentally, Inverlochy has its own helicopter landing site for those so inclined.
triple-distilled malt whisky in Scotland; Glengoyne, a distillery that straddles the line between Lowlands and Highlands and offers a range of exciting tours and master classes; Oban, a coastal distillery that predates the town itself; Ben Nevis, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom; Dalwhinnie, the highest distillery in Scotland, at 1164 feet above sea level and Edradour, the smallest traditional distillery in the world. This itinerary allows stays in Glasgow (we suggest the Hotel du Vin) and at two of Scotland’s best-loved properties: Cameron House Hotel and Inverlochy Castle Hotel. If you do venture into Speyside, you’ll find nice accomodations at Rocpool Reserve Hotel (with its elegant Chez Roux restaurant) in Inverness.

LearnmoreaboutScotland’ssingle-maltwhisky • Highlanders speak English and Gaelic. The term ‘whisky’ derives originally from the Gaelic uisge beatha, or usquebaugh, meaning “water of life,” a term often used in the Highlands to describe whisky today. • The Gaelic toast, slàinte mhath (good health), rolls right off the tongue after downing a few whisky’s. • Unlike Irish whiskey, Scotch whisky is spelled without an “e.” (According to one Irish drinker, it’s because Scots are too thrifty to add an extra letter.) • A Scottish proverb states that there are two things a Highlander likes naked, and one of them is malt whisky. Most Highlanders agree that the only thing one should add to good whisky is, perhaps, a drop of water to release the subtle flavors, and then, more whisky. • And last but never least: No matter if one looks at life as the glass half empty or half full – there is always room for whisky.
ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE A WHISKY TOUR • Stop for a drink at The Pot Still, a famous bar in Glasgow. • Take the master class at Glengoyne and create a 200-milliliter bottle of your own Glengoyne Highland Single Malt as a souvenir. • Enjoy the scenery on a drive along the banks of Loch Lomond and the picturesque coastal road, past Port Appin and Castle Stalker (tour the castle by prior arrangement). • See (and perhaps hike in) the glorious natural beauty of Rannoch Moor, a 50-square-mile area of lochs, lochans, peat bogs and streams surrounded by mountains; as well as Glencoe, Scotland’s most historic, scenic, famous and romantic glen, also surrounded by mountains. • Shop for art, food and luxurious Scottish country clothing at House of Bruar near Pitlochry.

a divorce case comes to her, Hart’s main goal is to help her clients restructure their lives. The lawyers of the STL Law Group have expertise in handling details of complicated asset division, such as when a spouse owns a business. Experience is essential in placing value on a spouse’s business, not just share-wise, but also in the income the business produces, she notes. “We have the ability to work with these clients because the attorneys in our office operate as a team,” she says. Hart’s 22 years of experience in the business and legal field have taught her it’s important to sit down with a client and truly listen to them, before advising them on how to best restructure their life during divorce. Oftentimes, she says, divorce cases are very emotional, and reaching a settlement isn’t always possible. Hart understands that divorce can affect families for many years into the future, and she and

her group will work to meet the client’s expectations. “We’re very compassionate and will try to solve the case, but we also want to meet the client’s needs and goals,” she says. “If we can’t reach a settlement, we’ll go to trial.” Hart says some of the challenges of her job include explaining how life will change for her clients when they go through a divorce. “If you have a 20-year marriage and each party needs to support their separate household, that can be difficult to explain,” she says. “Each party has to give something up, and there are plenty of aspects to be considered. The lifestyle they knew for years will have to be restructured, and we can help with that.” 314-862-3535 ∙ stllawgroup.com 231 S. Bemiston Ave., Ste. 1020 ∙ Clayton, Mo. 63105

Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis introduces the new GLE Coupe
M
ercedes-Benz of St. Louis is celebrating its one-year anniversary in its new facility at 1048 Hampton Ave. The beautiful, all-glass contemporary building is stunning inside and out. The building is a new corporate look for Mercedes and they are one of the first dealerships in the country with the new style, explains general manager Kate Hennekes. The Mercedes-themed artwork throughout the facility (including the service bays) was worth the trip. They also are celebrating the rollout of the new 2016 GLE Coupe, the sleek ‘fast back’ version of the GLE SUV. The GLE Coupe shares the same wheelbase and interior as the GLE, but is distinguished by a lower roofline and AMG enhanced performance. The coupe has seating for five and can also provide up to 60 cubic feet of cargo room. The GLE Coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V-6 engine that produces 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The power is transferred to the road through a new 9-speed, all-wheel-drive automatic transmission. The ride feel is solid, smooth and powerful. But wait, that’s just the comfort mode. You also can choose sport or sport plus modes. Each mode can be selected ‘on the fly’ and adjusts the suspension, steering, throttle response and even the exhaust sounds! The sport mode provides a sports car level of acceleration and nearly instantaneous throttle response. The sport plus mode feels only a little quicker and
By Steven Rosenberger added throttle ‘blips’ like you would get from a true manual transmission. The louder exhaust note and rapid shifts of the sport plus mode are exciting, but would not be your everyday drive mode. Paddle shifters also are available for a more realistic manual transmission feel. The GLE Coupe also is loaded with the latest Mercedes-Benz technology. At first, the long list of automated features seems intimidating, but once you are acquainted with them, it is easy to understand how they enhance the driving experience. One of the most interesting features is the Use of 360-degree camera coverage to produce a top down video view of your car. This view appears on an 8-inch dash-mounted screen and is coupled with a video overlay of your car’s direction of travel (similar to the backup lines you may have already seen on back-up cameras). The Mercedes view now shows the curve that your GLE will travel with the corresponding steering wheel position. This is really helpful in a tight parking lot, or maybe for avoiding hitting the kids’ bikes in the garage! Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis makes the technology learning curve easier for its customers by providing an on-site product concierge who can assist with the advanced technology of the new vehicles, and examines everything from programming garage doors to setting your favorite settings on the vehicle. This process completely customizes the ride and experience to the user. Bob Alesi, sales manager at Mercedes-Benz
St. Louis, adds that most new customers are aware of the Mercedes-Benz reputation for superior quality and performance, but are unaware of the long history of safety innovations. In fact, Mercedes has always made safety its No. 1 objective, with more than 80,000 automotive safety patents. The company has always made all of those technologies available to other automotive manufacturers for virtually no cost. The latest safety technologies are seamlessly active and many drivers may never be aware of them. For example, there is a first-of-its-kind attention-assist feature that monitors driver behaviors and will alert the driver if drowsiness is detected. Another newer safety feature is active lane keeping assist. The GLE will detect unintended lane encroachment and use the brake system to correct the direction of travel. The safety list goes on and on. Check out these features on You Tube, and you will be amazed. The interior of the GLE Coupe that I drove was saddle brown leather. It is a sophisticated combination of warm leather and natural wood that is both beautiful and comfortable. The interior lighting is dimmable LEDs and can be changed to eight different colors to match your mood. Finally, if you went to Jurassic World this past summer, you may have seen the GLE Coupe on the big screen. I, however, did not go home and dream about the beautiful new GLE Coupe because I was having nightmares about Indominus Rex!

ou might say Union Boulevard is one of the more ‘well-connected’ thoroughfares in town, bordering some of the city’s most storied enclaves, like Hortense Place, Westminster Place and Portland Place, to name but a few. Yet, despite its utilitarian significance, this venerable route isn’t known for its restaurants, though it does have some hidden gems along the way. One that’s of particular note, located in the Westmoreland Building, is The Kitchen Sink, a Creole and Cajun eatery that lives up to its name with a plethora of NOLA favorites to choose from, and then some. To start, check out the Yellow Submarine ($8). This app features tender pulled chicken, seasoned with salsa and rolled up in a tortilla, which is then fried up to a

crispy golden brown. These tasty bites, six to a plate, are topped off with some white cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Make sure to share these—if you indulge in an order solo, you might not have room for much else. Need some greens? The Talking Heads Salad ($8) is a fine choice. This hearty salad is built around an entire head of Romaine lettuce, part of which is charbroiled, yielding a unique smoky taste. The greens are topped with tangy bleu cheese crumbles and bacon. Steak, chicken or blackened shrimp can be added for an additional $3. This also is a fairly big portion, so bring a friend along to help. In our experience, if there’s a dish on a menu that’s named after the restaurant, chances are, it’ll be a standout. The flagship entree here, The Kitchen Sink ($15), is a mighty bowl of jumbo shrimp swimming in
By Matt Sorrell cheesy grits. This big bowl of goodness is made even more decadent with the addition of a rich tasso and crab gravy. Another pro tip: Look for sampler platters in order to get a taste of a variety of menu items. At The Kitchen Sink, this would be the 4 Horsemen ($15). On this platter are smaller portions of SBR (sausage, beans and rice), jambalaya, etouffee and gumbo, all of which are available as entrees. All four of these favorites are spot-on in terms of flavor. If you’ve tasted these classics down south, you’ll find The Kitchen Sink’s versions to be true to the originals. The Kitchen Sink not only evokes Louisiana through its food, but the space itself is reminiscent of the Big Easy, as well. Ceiling fans lazily turn overhead, and the dining room is lined with tall windows that look out onto the

spacious patio. There’s also a cavernous lobby area at the entrance, replete with vintage video games, dart boards and a pool table to indulge in before or after dinner. Live music also is featured in this space. Parking is a bit of a challenge along this stretch of Union. There’s some street parking available and there are a handful of spaces reserved for the restaurant, but many the lots surrounding the restaurant are reserved, so take this into consideration when planning your evening. Tuck into the comforting fare of The Kitchen Sink before you head out for your evening at the theater – it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away from Mustard Seed Theatre – you won’t be disappointed. 255 Union Blvd., 314-454-1551, letseat.at/thekitchensink.

The story: In 2006, a local milkman walked into a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. He ordered the teacher and male students to leave, then barricaded himself and 10 girl students in a room, where he systematically shot each of them in the head before killing himself. Playwright Jessica Dickey’s one-woman drama is a fictionalized account of that horrific incident and the subsequent forgiveness of the killer by the Amish parents of his victims, who even comforted his grieving widow in an amazing display of their faith and devotion to God. Highlights: Kicking off its ninth season of works that explore issues of faith and social justice, Mustard Seed Theatre delivers a powerful, profoundly moving interpretation of Dickey’s heart-rending story. With artistic director Deanna Jent’s carefully crafted guidance and Amy Loui’s luminous portrayal of seven different characters, The Amish Project sets the bar high for upcoming productions in the 2015-2016 season. Other Info: Dickey took on the acting assignment in the premiere production of The Amish Project in 2009 in Connecticut. I can’t comment on her performance, but her research about the real Nickel Mines mass murder resulted in an immensely affecting story about unspeakable crime and the remarkable response by the Amish community in forgiving the perpetrator and then consoling his family. Her one-act, 90-minute story is impeccably performed by Loui, who literally changes from character to character in a split second, never wavering in her differentiation of the various roles. She begins the evening as one of the younger girls in the school, who paints a vivid picture of her home life with her mother, father, brother and older sister. She’s a typical little girl, full of love and happiness and dreams and wonder about the world. She uses the mammoth chalkboard behind her to draw simple pictures of her family while she tells us about their way of life in disarming fashion, showing us how putting “Others” between Jesus and “You” leads to “Joy.” Gradually, we move away from the schoolhouse to a podium at stage left, where a professor named Bill conducts an impromptu news conference following the killings. Loui assumes the role of a middle-age man who has studied Amish culture for more than 20 years. He yearns to instruct the media about the genuine warmth and compassion of people whose ancestors escaped persecution in Europe and came to America to live their lives simply and devoutly. Loui also slips seemingly effortlessly into the roles of the killer’s anguished wife; an under-educated woman in the community whose vile rage is uncontrolled after watching news of the incident; a young Puerto Rican waitress, ironically named America, who herself deals with the prejudices of the
By Mark Bretz
ignorant in the village on a regular basis; another young student at the school; and the psychologically twisted killer himself. Throughout her exhaustive portrayal, Loui maintains a superior level of acting. It’s a remarkable performance that remains poignant and intelligent, always nurtured by Jent’s appreciation for the playwright’s insightful material and the performer’s mesmerizing abilities. Dickey is careful to point out that her work is fiction. Reading about the actual incident, however, one can see where she has picked up tender scenes and refined them with dramatic license, such as where two students heroically encourage shooter Eddie to “kill me first” followed by “kill me second.” In the actual incident, five of the 10 girls died, although the implication in the play is that all of them perished. Either way, it’s a grisly factual story upon which Dickey builds her absorbing drama. The title of The Amish Project might refer to the playwright’s effort or to how the victims’ families put their faith into inspiring practice as they forgave Eddie and consoled his family. Either way, The Amish Project is achingly affecting and an unforgettable theatrical experience. Company: Mustard Seed Theatre Venue: Fontbonne Fine Arts Theatre, Big Bend Boulevard at Wydown Boulevard Dates: Through Sept. 13 Tickets: $25-$30 (or Pay with a Can/Pay What You Can on Thursdays); contact 314-719-8060 or mustardseedtheatre.com Rating: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5.

The Sheldon soon will unveil an eclectic season of music, from its five signature series to new additions, including The Legends. LN recently caught up with executive director Paul Reuter, who shared more about the performers set to grace the stage of the acoustically superior Sheldon Concert Hall. Tell us about the highlights of this year’s lineup. Our Jazz Series has four outstanding jazz pianists – the best-known being the great talent Cyrus Chestnut – returning to The Sheldon; and new to our stage is Danilo Perez, a Panamanian jazz pianist. Rhonda Vincent, who The Wall Street Journal called the “Queen of Bluegrass,” is a Missouri native, but has gone on to fame and fortune. She will play with her very hot band called The Rage. What new concerts can audiences expect this year? Our Classics Series will feature St. Louis Symphony members, such as David Halen, inviting friends of theirs – often not from the symphony – to perform with them. So, all the shows will have a different spin. In addition, Julia Bullock, a young soprano from St. Louis and recent graduate of Juilliard, who The New York Times called one of the future stars in the world of opera, will be doing a recital here. What is the can’t-miss show of the season? Wynton Marsalis always puts on a great show, along with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, some of the top jazz players from around the world. Wynton loves playing at The Sheldon – without a microphone to be seen. Our Folk Series will feature Jake Shimabukuro, who plays the ukulele like you’ve never seen it played before. He can play anything on the ukulele, and it’s amazing what he gets out of those four strings. He’s such a virtuoso, but also a very charismatic player. He’s been dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele. Describe how the live show experience is unique at The Sheldon. It seats 700 people, but it feels more intimate than that. Everything the artist intends to do is perfectly communicated to the audiences. The musicians say it feels like they’re playing in their living room, only there’s an audience there to watch. The connection between the artist and the audience is very powerful. What’s new for this season? The new Legends series includes performances by Ramsey Lewis and Wynton Marsalis, and we will be announcing additional concerts. We also will have new concerts with The Muny. And we will be expanding our programs for kids: We’ve added free music lessons online and a mentoring program. We also are working with Boeing and Saint Louis Science Center to offer a S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and math) project for kids to learn to make musical instruments. What else can audiences expect this season? When people visit The Sheldon, they also have an opportunity to see our art galleries. We have wonderful exhibitions, including the Hartenberger World Music Collection, a private collection of 2,500 musical instruments from around the world going back to B.C. and up to contemporary ones. People who come to concerts often go through the galleries before the show or during intermission. It’s a great complement to seeing a show.

IN NEW THEATER SEASON
abor Day traditionally marks the end of summer. For the most part, the pool parties and barbecues are in the rear-view mirror, the kids are back in school and the Cardinals are making their traditional march to the postseason playoffs. Locally, the beginning of September also marks the unofficial start of the theater year. While Mustard Seed Theatre has opened its season in late August the last few years (The Amish Project began Aug. 28 at Fontbonne University, where Mustard Seed performs), The Rep kicks off its season Sept. 9 with the St. Louis premiere of All the Way, winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play. It’s a drama that shows the behind-the-scenes politics orchestrated by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963 in the aftermath of President Kennedy’s assassination as Johnson put his “Great Society” program into sometimes ruthless gear. Also at The Rep this fall are the classic mystery Angel Street in October and the 2012 Tony Award winner, Peter and the Starcatcher, for the holidays. The Rep’s Studio season begins in late October with I and You, a play about two disparate teens finding common ground. The Fabulous Fox appears to have a very strong schedule of professional touring shows for its subscribers, highlighted in the fall by the arrival of Matilda the Musical, winner of four Tony Awards and based on a story by Roald Dahl about a girl whose imagination helps her change her own destiny. Following its Oct. 21 to Nov. 1 run, The Fox returns a number of audience favorites, including a four-week run of Wicked beginning Dec. 9, as well as Mamma Mia! Nov. 6 to 8, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas Nov. 17 to 22 and Cirque Dreams Holidaze Dec. 4 to 6. Scott Miller’s New Line Theatre, self-labeled as “the bad boy of musical theatre,” ushers in its 25th season of adventurous, alternative musical theater at its new home, the Marcelle Theater in Grand Center. The black box venue, says Miller, was “created by Ken and Nancy Kranzberg specifically for us and the kind of work we do.” The debut production for New Line at the Marcelle will be the regional premiere of the musical comedy, Heathers, opening Oct. 1 for a four-week run. New Line is expanding its 2015-2016 season to four shows, as well as a concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall in January. Also opening its season in a new home this autumn is The Black Rep. Founder and producing director Ron Himes, who also is Henry Hampton Artist-in-Residence

in the Performing Arts Department of Arts & Sciences at Washington University, and his troupe will present three shows in 2015-2016 in Edison Theatre on the Washington University campus. The season begins with Tell Me Somethin’ Good Sept. 2 to 20, a musical revue conceived by Himes that showcases music from the street-corner doo-wop of the ’50s through ’60s soul, ’70s funk and the birth of hip-hop. The aforementioned Mustard Seed Theatre follows up The Amish Project with its third annual holiday presentation of All Is Calm, the St. Louis Theater Circle award-winning a cappella production about the truce between German and Allied troops in Europe on Christmas Eve during World War I, as they sang carols and exchanged impromptu gifts. New Jewish Theatre’s season begins Oct. 8 with a production of Neil Simon’s popular comedy, The Sunshine Boys, about two longtime vaudevillians who are asked to reunite for a TV retrospective on the history of comedy. That’s followed in December with the local premiere of Bad Jews, a comedy about young cousins who feud about who is a “real Jew” as well as fighting over family heirlooms. St. Louis Actors’ Studio’s ninth season, which is titled “Mind Games,” marks the addition of wellknown local actor/director Bobby Miller as associate artistic director, joining founder and artistic director William Roth in co-managing the company’s artistic duties. Its season premieres Sep. 18 with Theresa Rebeck’s provocative comedy, Seminar, about a group of aspiring novelists who are driven to extremes – and inspiration – while attending a workshop conducted by an eccentric literary figure. Then in December, it’s The Gin Game, winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
about two nursing home residents whose mutual love of gin rummy sparks an unexpected relationship. Stray Dog Theatre unleashes its 2015-2016 season beginning Oct. 8 with Dog Fight, a musical about three Marines preparing for deployment in 1963 whose final night of carousing devolves into a competition to see who can find the most unattractive girl to bring to their party, with surprising results. In December, Stray Dog continues its popular tradition of campy holiday shows with the local premiere of Devil Boys from Beyond, a parody of ’50s B-movies and trashy romance novels, with modern adult humor added to the potion. Shakespeare Festival St. Louis’ annual Shakespeare in the Streets production this fall will be The World Begun, an adaptation by Nancy Bell of Twelfth Night that will be performed Sept. 17 to 19 in Old North St. Louis on North 14th Street, between Montgomery and St. Louis Avenue. R-S Theatrics opens its fifth season Sept. 4 to 20 with the apocalyptic musical, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play and West End Players Guild begins its 105th season Sept. 25 with its presentation of an intriguing play called Venus in Fur. And the Florissant Civic Center Theater from Oct. 14 to 17 will present just the second national production of the drama, Only Just a Minute, a timely piece about the relationship between Dr. Benjamin Mays, long-time president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, and his famous protégé, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and their adherence to a philosophy of non-violent pursuit of civil rights. “All the world’s a stage,” said Shakespeare. At local venues, there’s more than enough offerings for anyone in the upcoming season.

Fall Movie PREVIEW Sept. 18
By Debbie Baldwin
Everest
Brace yourself for this heart-stopping reenactment of the grueling story of two climbing expeditions trying to survive a snowstorm on Mount Everest. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Keira Knightley.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
I’m starting to lose track of which ‘tween novel series is which. In part two of the Maze Runner franchise, Thomas and his rebel friends, The Gladers, try to battle ominous forces and survive The Scorch, a desolate uninhabitable landscape.
Sept. 25 The Intern
This film promises to be the delight of the fall. Robert De Niro stars as a senior, re-entering the workforce as an intern at an online fashion site. As you can predict, the young hipsters at the startup don’t know as much as they think they do.
Oct. 2 Legend
Tom Hardy takes on a dual role here playing the infamous twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray. The film follows their rise to power and their reign of terror in London in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Oct. 9 Pan
Let’s see. There was Hook in 1991, Peter Pan in 2003, the four-part Neverland in 2011, and countless others, and yet I think it’s safe to say the definitive Peter Pan movie has yet to be made…or has it? This film stars unknown Levi Miller as Peter, Garrett Hedlund, Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara.
Steve Jobs
Sept. 30 The Walk
It’s going to be quite a month for acrophobes. First Everest and now this. The gripping story follows Philip Petit and his infamous attempt to walk on a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center. Joseph Gordon Levitt stars, and while his attempt at a French accent may be the most dizzying thing about the film, it promises to be an edge-ofyour-seat adventure.
Oct. 2 The Martian
Matt Damon stars as Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on the Red Planet after a manned space mission to Mars goes wrong. Watney must employ every survival skill on the hostile planet while NASA and his team struggle to save him.
The brilliant Michael Fassbender steps into the shoes of the enigmatic Apple founder. This promises to be a standout in a long line of biopics, dramas and documentaries about the visionary Jobs.
Burnt
Bradley Cooper stars as a talented but temperamental Paris chef trying to earn an elusive third Michelin star while controlling the chaos in the kitchen and his personal life.
Oct. 16 Bridge of Spies
Tom Hanks stars as a New York lawyer dragged into Cold War spy games when he is recruited to facilitate a prisoner exchange with the Russians. The negotiation is an attempt to win the freedom of a U.S. pilot whose spy plane was shot down in the Soviet Union.
Oct. 30 Autobahn
In this high speed thriller, a young man desperately in need of money robs the wrong man and is now on the run from a notorious gangster, and unwittingly carrying some precious cargo.
Oct. 23 Rock the Kasbah
This is going to be an extremely heated Oscar season in the Best Actor category, and this film may put Bill Murray in the running. Murray stars as a washed up music manager whose last remaining artist abandons him at a USO event in Afghanistan. Stranded and broke, he discovers an unexpected talent.
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
It just wouldn’t be Halloween without a zombie apocalypse move. In this horror comedy, three scouts out on an expedition will have to employ all the skills they learned earning merit badges to survive the invasion of the undead.
MOVIE REVIEW—LISTEN TO ME MARLON
Brando Unedited Throughout his adult life, iconic actor Marlon Brando made audio recordings documenting everything from simple thoughts on his career to profound ideas about life and art. This compelling documentary (I had the privilege of screening it at the Nantucket Film Festival this June), tells the story of Marlon Brando with the incredible addition of the actor’s own voice from this extensive collection of recordings as Brando himself narrates his journey. Brando was raised in a small Midwestern town by

an alcoholic mother and a martinet father. His journey to the New York theater world quickly led to a movie career where his rugged good looks were paralleled by his staggering talent. His professional life was riddled with erratic performances and conflicts with writers, directors and co-stars, but his personal struggles were even more notorious and tragic. The film tells Brando’s story with compassion, and, with Brando’s own voice, the audience gets a rare glimpse into the mind of a modern artistic genius. It’s an 8.

A
ntonio and Kirven Douthit-Boyd have graced historic stages around the world, from China and Japan to Russia, Norway and Israel throughout the past 11 years as principal dancers for the internationally lauded Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. And while those experiences provided them with epic memories, they took their final bow during an international farewell tour crescendoing in Paris this summer – because they are just as happy returning to Antonio’s hometown of St. Louis to teach kids the art of dance at Center of Creative Arts (COCA). The Douthit-Boyds, who met through friends before joining Alvin Ailey and married in 2013, are the new artistic directors of COCA. Through the years, the pair has led myriad dance classes and productions at the creative arts center, and will now take on that role full-time. Antonio grew up in North County, and fondly recalls his first memory of dance – moving to the music of Whitney Houston at a family gathering at age 3. By the time he was 16, he began taking classes at COCA. “Dance always has been a love of mine, since the day I took my first class,” he says. He went on to train at St. Louis companies including Alexandra Ballet, and to dance for Dance Theatre of Harlem and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal prior to joining Alvin Ailey. A Boston native, Kirven trained at Boston Arts Academy and danced with Battleworks Dance Company and Parsons Dance Company before becoming part of Alvin Ailey. “I was put in my first dance class when I was 5...I begged my family to take me out,” he says. “I was into gymnastics and karate.” But at 13, Kirven had a life-changing experience that called him back to dance. “I saw Alvin Ailey perform in spring 1999 in Boston on the first night, and snuck back into the theater every night after that. It was an
eye-opening experience as far as how good dance could be.” Becoming a member of the group he had grown up admiring was a dream come true, he says. “I graduated high school, and two years later I was in the company that inspired me to be so great in the first place. So, it was really incredible.” Alvin Ailey was also the place where the DouthitBoyds got to know each other better. “In the company, we both knew we were hard workers, so we gravitated toward each other,” Antonio says. “You want to be
around people who you aspire to be like.” The pair decided to leave the company at the height of their careers this summer for a change in direction. “We both felt we wanted to be in a different place in
our lives,” Kirven says. “And being able to come to COCA to (be artistic directors) was a blessing at the right time. We could’ve gone to dance at other places, but we feel really passionate about the kind of work that we want to have happen here. We want to make some good memories and history here.” The dance duo is managing COCA’s dance department, including the Pre-Professional Dance Division, and two of the organization’s student companies: COCA Dance and Ballet Eclectica. While the programming for the 2015 to 2016 COCA performance season was set before they arrived, they are in the midst of planning Black History Month and summer programs for the 2016 to 2017 season. The pair is excited for the opportunity to shape students lives through dance. “It’s great to see that we’re going to be able to impact so many young people’s lives like my teachers here in St. Louis did for me,” Antonio says. “We’re ready for the challenge.” And the kids are ready, too, he says. “They are hungry for it.” The Douthit-Boyds agree the best dancers are those who are the most versatile, so they look forward to training students in all types of dance, from ballet to jazz, tap, hip-hop and contemporary, to ready them for any audition. “It makes you very valuable in a company when you can do everything,” Kirven says. “We want to bring in a lot of great artists we know in the field, and give the kids really amazing experiences. Kids don’t know what they are capable of until you show them.” The duo will be implementing training programs that suit every dancer, Antonio says. “We want to help them to learn their bodies at this age, so that when they get out into the world, they are very aware of what their body can and can’t do.” The Douthit-Boyds ultimately want to make St. Louis synonymous with dance. “We want to groom the kids and send them off into the world,” Kirven says, “and make it so that when people see them, they’ll say, ‘Oh, that kid’s from COCA.’ ”
