EDITOR MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH HAVE A BIG SWEET TOOTH, SO IT IS a frequent occurrence that we have the urge to indulge in our favorite sweet treat – ice cream! Although our trek for a treat is often just a short trip to the refrigerator, we will occasionally venture out to try something new at one of our favorite shops – including Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. In this week’s Arts & Culture section, LN contributing writer Brittany Nay shares the history behind Ted Drewes as it celebrates its 90th year in business! Turn to page 82 to learn about its storied past and to learn how it’s also celebrating such a sweet milestone – spoiler, there’s a new concrete/sundae in town that is drool-inducing. And to keep things on a sweet note, make sure to check out LN digital editor and staff writer Emily Adams’ story on Le Macaron French Pastries of Saint Louis. Starting on page 68, Adams speaks to St. Louis resident Jim McKibben about why he’s bringing these delectable French pastries to Webster Groves, what his shop will be offering and more. All the best,
Alecia Humphreys
Editor’s Corner The word around town
Congratulations to Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School – an independent, Catholic school for boys and receiving a lead-gift commitment of $1 million to the school’s Honoring Our Legacy Initiative. According to a press release, this is one of the single largest gift commitments in the school’s 90-year history. “This $1 million lead-gift commitment has been given to challenge the community to join the Honoring Our Legacy Initiative,” continues the release, “and to help endow the English and Mathematics Departments as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence.”
Operation Food Search, a nonprofit hunger-relief organization, received a $25,000 grant from the Food Research and Action Center and the Walmart Foundation – the leading national nonprofit organization working toward eliminating poverty-related hunger and undernutrition in the United States.. OFS plans to use the grant funds to continue building statewide support for the Breakfast After the Bell models, which take breakfast out of the cafeteria and into the classroom so all students may begin their school day well-fed and ready to learn and succeed.

uilt in 2007, the upcoming featured property for Alex Thornhill and Stephanie Oliver of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty is 20 Upper Warson Road, also known as the Westbury Estate. Drawing from the legacy properties of iconic American and European families, the Westbury Estate was inspired by classic Georgian design and features timeless English architecture. “Decades from now, there is nothing about it that will seem outdated or was trendy at the time,” Alex Thornhill confirms. “The property will be just as classic and beautiful as it is today.” The Westbury Estate was a labor of love by the owners and designers, with more than five years of research involved in finding the expert artisans and craftsmen. The owners took inspiration from the Westbury House and Gardens in upstate New York – the Gardens themselves taking inspiration from Charles II style – and has been reinterpreted for modern living and entertaining. “The quality is unparalleled,” Thornhill adds. “These owners are probably the most attentive to detail I have ever met.” She explains that the estate was constructed using the best of the best: Minton Homes, Architect Pat Nolan, L’Atelier Custom Woodworking and Leonard Masonry replicating the limestone exterior carvings from the original Westbury House. “It’s all in the details with this house,” she adds. “The craftsmanship is meant to withstand the test of time.” Thornhill sites the Parish glass conservatory at the back of the estate as an example. “It’s truly a work of art. The company dates back to the Victorian era, and was handcrafted in England. Each piece was labeled, disassembled and shipped to the United States. The English Parish contractor flew out on-site and reassembled it here.” It’s that dedication to every element of the estate that Thornhill says makes the Westbury Estate stand out. For interior design, the owners turned to Carter Noel Miller. Having worked in the business for more than 30 years, Noel Miller was no stranger to designing for stately and elegant spaces. “I was referred to [the owners] by several past clients, and it was a very big and interesting project.”
After the owners visited the Westbury House in New York for research, Noel Miller derived inspiration from the Georgian revival aesthetic found in grand country manor homes. “I really enjoyed combining the more formal areas of the house so that it would flow with the more casual ones to create a warm family atmosphere,” Noel Miller describes. “From the dramatic front hall entry to the cozy family rooms, garden room and pool house, there is certainly a room for every occasion.” This estate boasts more than 20,000 square feet, with six bedrooms and nine baths. Thornhill details amenities that homeowners won’t find anywhere else: “The pool and pool house, the tennis court, the putting green, the large health and fitness space with a gym, a massage room, an aromatherapy sauna and a juice bar, the six-car garage – these are rare finds in the St. Louis market, particularly all in one home.” Thornhill and Oliver are giving this elegant estate the presentation it deserves, allowing every detail to shine when prospective buyers start looking. Pat Nolan meticulously designed every inch of the home, incorporating significant multi-piece Dentil, Egg and Dart, and Ogee moldings, inlaid wall panels, relief ceiling medallions, and four-sided Ionic capitals. The Georgian style calls for a bi-symmetrical design which gives the home an incredible sense of balance throughout. Even the orientation of the structure on the property was carefully considered to create a thoughtful approach to give residents and visitors time to absorb the home upon arrival, while aligning the home among the gardens, landscaping and outdoor activity centers. Although the home took its inspiration from a classic Georgian estate, Thornhill encourages buyers to look at the Westbury Estate as a legacy property in and of itself. The classicism in the design and the quality of the craftsmanship ensure that this is a home that will stand the test of time. he Arya Foundation recently hosted its fifth annual fundraiser, the Summer to Remember Ball, at the The William D. Purser, DC Center at Logan University in Chesterfield. Guests celebrated the foundation’s accomplishments and enjoyed cocktails, dinner and a dance party that brought everyone to their feet. The fundraiser succeeded quite well and passed its previously set goals. The foundation’s name honors Arya, the daughter of co-founders Sunanda Dhananjay and Dhananjay Kokate. The organization covers some of the costs for medical supplies and equipment necessary to “special needs” children.

f you could put the Arthritis Foundation’s mission into a single word, it would be this: Yes. The focus of its research and advocacy has been to allow those suffering from arthritis the chance to say that word as often as they can and live their lives to the fullest. Whether supporting those fighting their everyday battles with arthritis or fighting on the steps of Capitol Hill, the Arthritis Foundation is leading the way. “The mission is to cure [arthritis] and to help people who are suffering live better lives,” says Volunteer Marketing Chair Sherrie Wehner. “The foundation really puts its money where its mouth is, and that’s very admirable.” Executive Director Eric Page adds that the foundation works also to educate people on the disease and put otherwise unknown facts into the world. “I was amazed to discover that arthritis is the No. 1 cause of disability,” Page says. “It has a huge toll on people’s lives – there’s a real loss of experience that comes from it.”
That loss of experience especially affects children, and in the Missouri chapter – based out of St. Louis – there is a focus on giving these kids a chance to enjoy their childhood to the fullest. Page cites the statistics that 5,700 children are affected by juvenile arthritis in Missouri and 13,000 in Illinois, and that 995 juvenile arthritis families participated in events and programs put on by the Arthritis Foundation in 2018. “There are multiple events for children in the community,” Wehner confirms. “For children suffering from arthritis, summer camps are often not a reality for them. The camps put on by the Arthritis Foundation are a chance for these kids to get to be kids.” This year is the 39th annual Silver Ball – a gala held by the Missouri chapter in St. Louis. One of the longest-running charity galas in the area, the Silver Ball will be held at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel on Saturday, December 7 starting at 6 p.m. and will have a cocktail reception before dinner and auctions. Wehner encourages all who are able to do so to attend this fundraising event and to help the foundation in its quest to help find a cure and support those affected. “It’s important to know that arthritis affects everyone,” Wehner says. “This is a disease that affects so many people’s lives. The foundation really has a mission to support people suffering and help them live happy and healthy lives.” Arthritis Foundation Missouri Chapter, 9433 Olive Street, Suite 100, 314-499-8452, arthritis.org/missouri

Going SOLAR What happens when the Missouri Botanical Garden, Midwest Renewable Energy Association and Washington University in St. Louis join forces? Something powerful. More specifically, Grow Solar St. Louis – a solar power group-buy program that can help property owners living in the city of St. Louis, Clayton, Maplewood, Richmond Heights and University City invest in affordable solar installations through volume purchasing and free community education. Ladue News caught up with Glenda Abney, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s director of the Earthways Center, to learn more about the Grow Solar St. Louis program. What inspired you to collaborate with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and Washington University to implement the Grow Solar St. Louis program? The garden has known of the MREA for years and considers them a highly respected and great organization. We, of course, feel the same about Washington University. The Grow Solar program originally started with MREA, so the garden reached out to them to inquire about bringing the program to the St. Louis region. Wash U was considering supporting a solar group-buy program at the same time, so the three of us came together to provide the program in the local region. How does the program work? Home and small-business property owners can start by attending a free Solar Power Hour. This one-hour

event provides a thorough overview of solar. Those who attend can even have the solar technicians check their site right at the Solar Power Hour using a special software program to determine if their property is viable for solar. Technicians will check the roof type, orientation, size and the tree canopy shading of the property. If your site wouldn’t work well for solar, they’ll tell you right away. If it is well-suited for solar, you can determine if you want to move forward. If you chose to move forward, you can set up an appointment with the Straight Up Solar [the installers competitively selected for this program] staff, who will do a site visit for an even more detailed assessment at no cost to you. After the visit, you will receive a bid, and only then, if you want to move forward, will you enter into a contract with SUS for a solar install. Timing is important – the sooner you sign up, the higher the likelihood you can get solar installed this year. Some of our participants will sign up at the end of the program – no later than Nov. 15 – and will have installs done early in 2020. What are the perks of going solar? You will save energy costs over the life of the solar array. There is a cost upfront to install, but you will save electricity in your monthly bills starting right away in the first month. You are also using a cleaner choice of power and making a huge difference to the environment. You’ll receive a rebate from Ameren
By Alecia Humphreys Missouri and are eligible for a tax credit. Plus there are financing options available. You are offering an array of Solar Power Hours. Are all events the same educational opportunity? Yes, you just need to attend one. We offer many to make it easy to engage, and we host them at fun places! [You’ll learn] the benefits of going solar and how their property might work for a solar install. What’s the ultimate goal of this program? To advance sustainability in the region. We have more than 30 sustainability-related programs we do in the community as part of Missouri Botanical Garden. Each of these programs results in cleaner air, water and soil, which is essential for plant conservation and a healthy quality of life for all of us. We love solar-based programs, because it’s a mechanical way of using the benefit of the sun, which is just what the plants do! Is this the first time this program has been offered? This is the first time in the St. Louis region. There is a Grow Solar Metro East program that has been going on for several years. We were watching that program and waiting for the right time to bring it to the Missouri side, and that time is now!

stronomers measure stellar brightness in both apparent and absolute magnitude, but in the area of local interior design, no matter the measure, few stars shine as brightly as Nisha Tailor. That the work of Tailor – the namesake of Nisha Tailor Interior Design – blazes with such novalike intensity should come as all the more stunning given her relative youth; she founded her limited liability company only in October 2010, the year St. Louis Community College accorded her an Associate in Applied Science degree in interior design. Tailor leverages her expertise in both residential and commercial contexts, according to her robust website, with the stated goal of “adding joy to life.” In addition to interior design, her services extend to color consulting, decoration, furniture selection, project management and flipping/space planning. “I always loved drawing and painting, growing up, and always dreamed of being an artist – I just didn’t know what kind of artist,” she relates regarding the inspiration for her career. “I would have visions of having my own exhibitions for my work.” Tailor continues by referring to well-known computer-aided design and drafting software from the San Rafael, California-based company Autodesk: “Anyway, after having to build my two houses and always having an eye for unique spaces and décor, fabric, fashion, graphics and patterns, I decided to go and take an AutoCAD class at St. Charles Community College. I loved drawing floor plans. Nothing stopped me from there. “Interior design isn’t just decorating – it’s science and art combining for a human environment where emotions are evoked for each unique individual. It takes creativity to enhance someone’s culture, a healthy space they can call home.” Without ever veering into baroque excess, a failing of some interior design, Tailor’s work, in its exquisite eclecticism, verges on the sublime, particularly in her command of patterns. One especially striking example of that command, displayed on her website, involves a lounge wherein
black and white predominate, in the forms of a herringbone accent wall and a brace of Greek keyed armchairs. Another example, an undulant basement backbar, shimmers with multicolored diamond tiles and suggests the gorgeous Victorian-era embellishments of Austrian symbolist Gustav Klimt. Less easily defined patterns appear in other projects documented on Tailor’s website; on the flooring of a master bedroom, for instance, figures resembling gray and black tuning forks interlock intriguingly. Elsewhere, a small powder room includes a wall of ceramic tiles that delightfully recall the efforts of a master quilter. Likewise, at times, Tailor altogether eschews the angularity suggested by the preceding, as in a tropical sunroom that includes two tall lighter-hued pieces of statuary (or something similar) curving sensuously enough to border on the sensual. A second powder room, meanwhile, incorporates a three-by-three nonet of metallic Buddha masks against a dark background, reflected hazily in a large round mirror beside what look like hand-painted antique incandescent lightbulbs in a loose right triangular array. Also, the wit of Tailor’s conceptions at times turns positively lighthearted. One nursery shown on the website sports a jungle theme and features a mural depicting an elephant and its calf, a lion and its cub, and other beasts, along with a sizable toy giraffe. In another nursery, burgundy and purple dominate the palette with sufficient power to make one wonder if Tailor’s angling for work from Buckingham Palace. “I grew up in India, and I’ve lived with many cultures, architecture – forts, castles, temples,” she relates by way of explaining her eclecticism. “It’s limitless to your eyes and soul. I can say my culture inspires me the most. “I don’t have any particular [favorite] artists, but from Frank Lloyd Wright, Rembrandt to van Gogh – all crazy artists had their own vision and style to bring out their own talents at any cost. You have to be out of your comfort zone, taking risks, accelerating heartbeats – nervousness, afraid to
create your own art. If you’re not, you haven’t done your 100 percent.” Tailor also briefly dwells on the high-contrast nature of certain of her works: “The black-andwhite lounge has made lots of noise. This says a lot about me. I am honest and will be clear upfront: I don’t follow all ‘the rules’ in designing. When I do break the rules and nothing has to be coordinated to match – or mix modern with traditional – again, to create that stamp, that it’s your space – there will not be the same ever again in anyone else’s house. “I do love to paint, so I painted chevron patterns on the [lounge] wall instead of applying wallpaper – because it’s way swanky.” Tailor has been designated an LEED Green Associate through Washington, D.C.’s U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design initiative – the world’s most widely used greenbuilding rating system, which covers almost all types of building, community and home projects and provides a framework for creating healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. She succinctly explains her aesthetic of sustainability. “Again, my Indian culture inspires me to be sustainable,” Tailor says. “It’s one step above to bring a healthy and holistic environment to your spaces. My daily life and lifestyle stand on eating fresh, making food from scratch, home remedies – not depending on medication. Yoga, martial arts, breathing fresh air. Trying to reuse, recycle and reinvent as much as possible.”
It thus comes as no surprise when she mentions interior design’s abiding trials and triumphs. “All renovations are my most challenging and satisfying projects,” Tailor says. “Once you see before-andafter pictures, it’s mind-blowing. Easy to create any space with a blank canvas, but when you have to turn ugly houses into brand-new, that’s what excites me the most to work on.” By any definition, as suggested earlier, Tailor’s work brims with wit. (One photo on her website, by way of example, shows her clad in a black- and white-checked topcoat and a dark pork pie, and seated cross-legged on the deck of a steel footbridge, apparently meditating on a black-and-yellow table lamp a foot or so in front of her.) That wit surfaces exuberantly in her response to an inquiry about what challenge she’d most like to essay in her company’s second decade, after Nisha Tailor Interior Design’s 10th anniversary next October. “Take over the world!” Tailor says. “I would love to create custom homes with unique floor plans, with a use of new mixtures of material and finishes. I’m planning to find opportunities to work at the international level with different cultures or go to India. I would love to work on restaurants and night clubs that bring unique experiences to customers.” Nisha Tailor Interior Design, 636-866-7601, nishatailorinteriordesign.com

Your Space You
ook beyond its name and you will discover that Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath has much to offer when it comes to renovating your home. That’s because the creative team behind the name is all about delivering spaces that fit your family’s unique wants and needs. And they do that through creating the “#nothingordinary” experience. “We are constantly working as a team and looking to outside creative powerhouses to fuel the work that we do,” president Jenny Rausch says. “We collaborate with each other and our clients to deliver unique, efficient and beautiful spaces.” These partnerships foster creativity at a new level and serve to generate ideas that look past the standard designs for your kitchen, bath, or additional spaces like your laundry room, and address ways to make each area function in a manner that best fits you and yours. “We work on more than just kitchens and baths,” Rausch reiterates. “The other stuff [we design is what] we like to call ‘wherever spaces.’ [These would be] wherever you need an expert space planner, or someone to think through how you are going to use the space and how [the area] can make your life easier. That is where we live, every day.” In one particular “wherever space,” the client wanted a multifunctional laundry room that also doubled as a bath, complete with a shower, toilet and sink. Cabinets

and a folding table still provide adequate space in this room to sort the laundry as needed. Yet, as it serves dual purposes, the all-white room still appears clean and modern, making it a complete asset to the family and home. “Space planning is first,” Rausch notes. “The pretty [part of renovating a room] comes after. The pretty part is the easy part!” Another great aesthetic appears in a “wherever space” that combines the laundry area with a built-in dog bath. Keeping in the theme with our four-legged friends, a doggie print wallpaper adorns the walls. A window looks out on greenery and allows for daylight to fill the large space. Drawers rest beneath a long countertop, designed for sorting and folding, while shelving above can house laundry essentials. In addition, space under the counter makes feeding time simple. “[At Karr Bick,] we say we are ‘problem-solvers’ – that is what we do every day,” Raush asserts. “It doesn’t matter if those problems are with space planning, family dynamics, or the selection of materials and issues you may encounter onsite. They are all dilemmas that need solutions. And that is really what we do best – we find the answers.” So, wherever your home is in need of an upgrade, Karr Bick has the knowledge and expertise to make any space better suited for your family’s lifestyle. A fashion-forward area boutique known for its personal styling services has relocated.
U
pdate your contact lists, ladies! Local women’s boutique Mix & Match and its ample selection of colorful clothing have moved, with the new location opening last Sat., Sept. 7, at 5400 Devonshire Ave. in St. Louis’s Southampton neighborhood. Known locally for its trunk shows and personal styling services, Mix & Match was founded by Maggie Laskowitz and Erin Keeven, who recently left the company after moving out of the region. Laskowitz explains the two discussed the idea of a clothing endeavor in 2015 over happy hour margaritas, in hopes of developing a more convenient and enjoyable shopping method. The original idea? Trunk shows. “What’s better than having a fun ladies’ night in with your favorite gal pals, drinks, food and – of course – clothes?” Laskowitz asks rhetorically. A fashion design and development graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, Laskowitz has been working in the fashion industry since 2009 and continues to serve as an accessories designer full time outside of her boutique and styling services. “Nothing like a true entrepreneur doing it all,” she says. In 2017, the duo’s trunk show operation outgrew its at-home setup and opened the first Mix & Match boutique in St. Louis’ Shaw neighborhood, where it stayed till announcing its relocation in July. Mix & Match took over not only the lower-level retail space at the new location but also the entire structure. “This building is going to be so much more than just a new home for Mix & Match, and that’s why I made the decision to move,” Laskowitz explains. “The new space will create a community where small business owners can work, thrive

and learn from each other.” This expansion includes coworking features like a large workshop and private office space. That office space will serve as the home for another popular local business, paper goods and wedding invitation company On Three Designs. “With Erin and I parting ways, I felt it was a perfect time to explore the possibility of a new location and refreshing the brand,” says Laskowitz, noting she fell in love with the new space and the street. “I met with my friend Alicia Lantzy, owner of On Three Designs, for a coffee date and to get her thoughts on possibly sharing the building. When they say things happen for a reason, this was it. Turned out, Alicia was also eying that space and was very excited and interested in this joint opportunity!” Although the new location will allow for ample in-store inventory and a traditional shopping experience, Mix & Match’s in-home styling sessions and trunk shows – on which the business was built – aren’t going anywhere. Laskowitz notes that busy mothers or professionals balancing hectic schedules may particularly benefit from the service. “The styling sessions are for those clients who’d like a more one-on-one experience,” she explains, mentioning the process starts with an online sign-up form. “After the form is filled out, I pull a selection of items that I feel would fit
their needs. I’ll bring anything from the shop I feel would work the best.” The styling service solely includes items available from the Mix & Match boutique, but there’s no limit to the number of items Laskowitz may bring. “The most convenient thing about [the sessions] is I bring the clothes to you,” she says. “This way, I can be there to help put together the outfits with you, you try them on, and I take with me anything that didn’t work.” Another huge bonus? Unlike traditional online shopping, customers don’t have to deal with mailing back unwanted items. Items in the store include women’s apparel, accessories and shoes – all reasonably priced and reflective of Laskowitz’s personal style, she says. Pieces are meant to be on-trend but still comfortable, and should customers use the styling service, the $20 fee acts as a credit toward products. Also, now that the store has only one owner, Laskowitz says she’ll likely add more stylists in the future. “The local small business community in St. Louis is amazing and so supportive of each other,” says Laskowitz. “To have the chance to continue to be part of that community and provide a space where I have the opportunity to connect, collab and work with more businesses is so rewarding.” Mix & Match, 5400 Devonshire Ave., stlmixandmatch.com

Mushroom Steaks With Robiola Cheese Sauce Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott
I
f you’re lucky enough to have a mushroom purveyor at your local farmers market, you’d be remiss not to buy its most lovely mushroom cluster and treat the cluster as you would the finest steak. The umami, earthy flavor of mushrooms pairs perfectly with a creamy cheese sauce and a woody herb like sage. In that regard, robiola – a soft-ripened Italian cheese made with a mix of goat’s, cow’s and sheep’s milk – proves ideal for use in a simple sauce to complement hearty mushroom steaks.
ln
Serves | 4 to 6 |
CHEESE SAUCE
8 oz robiola cheese, rind removed and discarded, cut into cubes 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 shallot, minced 2 Tbsp chopped fresh sage, divided kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ¾ cup heavy cream
MUSHROOM STEAKS 2 lbs oyster mushroom steaks 2 Tbsp olive oil kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste | Preparation – Cheese Sauce | Place cheese in a heatproof bowl, and set aside. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil, garlic, shallot and 1 tablespoon sage, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Once garlic and shallot turn translucent, roughly 2 to 3 minutes, add heavy cream; heat until simmering. Pour cream mixture over cheese in heatproof bowl, and cover with plastic wrap; allow to cool for 10 minutes. Using an immersion blender or handheld mixer, blend sauce until smooth. | Preparation – Mushroom Steaks | Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside. Preheat oven to broil. In a small bowl, toss mushroom steaks with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer steaks to lined baking sheet, and broil in oven until crispy around the edges, approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Turn broiler off and let mushroom steaks continue cooking in oven until tender, 5 to 10 minutes more. Arrange mushroom steaks on a platter, and pour warm cheese sauce over top. Garnish with reserved sage. Serve immediately.

elene Mirowitz is thankful that her late husband, Carl, was able to leave his birthplace, Germany, when he did. “He was 7 years old in 1937 when he fled Nazi Germany with his parents and two brothers,” she says. “They made it just in time.” Carl Mirowitz, co-founder of Delmar Financial Company, was forever grateful for his life in the United States. In 2004, as he was dying, the philanthropist urged his wife to “continue giving back to our community.” “When I learned that Covenant Place [formerly Covenant House] was having a campaign to rebuild its affordable housing for the elderly, I decided that was for me and for Carl,” Helene Mirowitz says. “That was how I came to fund the new Mirowitz Center at Covenant Place.” The Mirowitz Center, which opened on Sept. 8 with a ribbon-cutting, is a 19,000-square-foot community center targeting active baby boomers and seniors. It is located in the Covenant II Cahn Family Building on the JCC’s Millstone Campus in Creve Coeur. Covenant Place provides affordable, independent senior living in a caring and supportive environment. With 355 accessible apartments for those 62 and older, it is home to more than 400 seniors. Participants there can enjoy a variety of classes, special events and activities, including social, arts and culture, health, wellness and exercise, education and multigenerational opportunities. Beautiful works of art, which once hung at the former Jewish Center for Aged in Chesterfield and which were donated by the JCA Charitable Foundation, enhance the experience of being in the Mirowitz Center. “The variety and quality of the art enliven the space – it’s like visiting a boutique gallery,” says Joan Denison, president and CEO of Covenant Place. “From the first time we talked about the project, Helene embraced the opportunity to provide a very special place for seniors,” she adds. “Her leadership gift has helped make it possible for senior adults throughout St. Louis County to have access to quality health care, resource providers, engaging programs, classes, events, and delicious food – all under one roof.” A native St. Louisan and 1955 graduate of University City High School, Helene Mirowitz met her future husband “at a Washington University social.” The couple dated six months and was married in 1958 at Le Château in Frontenac. They had two sons, Scott and Steven “Dever.” “The one thing I always wanted in life was a girl, and now I have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren that include four precious girls,” Helene Mirowitz says. “I am a very happy woman.” She talks about her lifelong dedication to the center: “Our family spent a lot of time at the JCC.” To honor Mirowitz’s commitment to help others there, her husband established the Helene Mirowitz Department of Jewish Life at the JCC. The couple also funded an activity center and a room at the JCC’s Marilyn Fox building in Chesterfield. Daughter-in-law Maxine Mirowitz teaches a weekly chair-yoga class at the JCC.
Lynn Wittels, president and CEO of the JCC, says: “Today, our Carl and Helene Mirowitz Performing Arts Center hosts programs and serves as an inside home for hundreds of day campers all summer long. The spirit and inspiration that fill that room are a constant reminder that each of us can make a difference, and we are forever grateful for Helene’s support of the work that is done at the J. Helene has always been an advocate for a strong and vibrant community. She is truly a force.” At 81, Mirowitz remains active and says she has enjoyed travel her entire life: “Carl and I traveled everywhere, but my favorites are Israel and Italy.” An accomplished bridge player, she lauds the St. Louis Bridge Center in Olivette, where she plays duplicate bridge competitively at least once a week. “It is a wonderful place for people to socialize,” Helene Mirowitz says. Helene Mirowitz recently moved from her stately home into a condominium in Creve Coeur, where she lives with Blanche, her Shih Tzu, “a rescue dog that I dearly love. I downsized because I am getting older and moving on.” On cuisine, she says she could “eat Chinese food every day” and adds that she is an aficionado of costume jewelry and handbags. Of most importance to Helene Mirowitz, though, is her desire to make a difference. “There are many people who are able to assist others, and they don’t,” she says. “I find that difficult to understand. I get tremendous pleasure helping others. I was young when I started helping Covenant Place. But I am ‘the elderly’ now, and I am forever dedicated to the cause of helping older adults.”

St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness
By Alecia Humphreys
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 22,500 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and nearly 14,000 will lose their battle with that disease. Despite this earth-shattering statistic, one St. Louis nonprofit isn’t allowing fear to stop its fight. In fact, St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness is allowing such facts to fuel its fire. Ladue News caught up with SLOCA community relations manager Tabitha Tomko to learn more about this organization as it celebrates Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. What is the goal of St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness? SLOCA is committed to impacting ovarian cancer in our community by promoting awareness of early warning signs, funding ovarian cancer research and supporting survivors. How is the organization celebrating Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month? We work all year long to spread awareness, but September is truly our month to turn it teal, which is the color of ovarian cancer awareness! We will have billboards up around town, have yard signs and have several special events planned for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month! Since the symptoms of ovarian cancer – bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, urinary urgency or frequency,

and difficulty eating or feeling full quickly – can be subtle and are often dismissed, we want to educate as many women as we can. Early detection truly is key. A lot of our events also focus on survivors and offer them a fun day or evening and the opportunity to connect with others. Why is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month important? There is no routine diagnostic test for ovarian cancer. Many women mistakenly believe that the Pap test screens them. However, this is not the case. There is a lot of misinformation around ovarian cancer, and paired with symptoms that can be subtle or easily dismissed, it is key to educate about the symptoms. When the disease is caught early, treatment and survival rates are encouraging, but unfortunately, it is not often caught until late stages. We want Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month to help educate women so that they can advocate for their health if they find themselves experiencing symptoms or are at a higher risk due to family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer. What do funds raised from these events go toward? The funds raised by SLOCA further our threepart mission to impact ovarian cancer in our

This fall, Webster Groves greets a shop devoted to the colorful French pastry called the macaron.
68 September 13, 2019 | LadueNews.com
S
t. Louis resident Jim McKibben wants you to relax; enter his forthcoming pastry shop, grab a treat, sit down at a Parisian caféstyle table or get cozy in a booth for two, and enjoy what he calls an oasis in the midst of the chaos of daily life: Le Macaron French Pastries of Saint Louis. “Schedule it, do it, enjoy it,” he says with a laugh of the new shop, which will focus on the namesake sandwich cookie. “Sincerely, I just think it’s the world that we’re in that I think people forget that sometimes. I’ve kidded people over the years by telling them, ‘Don’t forget to breathe.’” McKibben will open the first Le Macaron French Pastries location in Missouri this fall in the Old Webster business district of Webster Groves, an area he says was perfect for the brand’s special kind of fun and elegance (and conveniently close to his home). “I think Old Webster Groves really brings an image and a brand and a location to people’s mind, versus just Webster Groves or just St. Louis,” he says. “People from all around come [to Old Webster] for the combination of great and innovative restaurants and unique mix of shops and services and boutiques.” Among such local favorites as C.J. Mugg’s, The Block Restaurant and Butcher Shop and Olive + Oak, McKibben is hoping his pastry shop will be able to join the beloved enclave and dining destination, and leave guests wowed by sugarinduced excellence. The community’s excitement over Le Macaron’s opening, from unanimous city council and planning commission approval to explosive energy on social media, gives his hope promise. “We’re just so eager and anxious to get it open and are doing everything we can to do it, but be ready and have it done right,” McKibben says. McKibben believes the metro area’s foodie scene has a macaron-shaped hole that his pastry shop has just the filling to satisfy. Even though he notes that the area has a number of great French dessert options, he says this shop will take the cake – or croissant. “I like to compare it to pizza, where there’s a variety of different pizzas that are good, better and best,” McKibben says, “and we really think that we’ll have the most unique and best desserts.” From the authentic recipes and pastries developed by the company’s French chef to elevated touches like porcelain dishes and soft French background music, Le Macaron’s mission revolves around celebrating life’s little delicacies. It’s this mission – and maybe the lemon macarons – that drew McKibben
to the franchise in the first place. “I was kind of exploring new opportunities and new adventures and what was going to be the next chapter of my career,” he says. “It [Le Macaron] was really appealing because I don’t want to just have a business or a job. I want to feel passionately about it, and I want to have fun with it. And I knew that the whole concept – the quality products and interacting with people and bringing that experience to them – would be fun and rewarding.” It was ultimately the people who are helping bring his dream to life that sealed the deal for McKibben, however. “I’m getting all the benefits of their experiences while bringing in my own ideas and concepts,” he says, “and whether it’s the architects or the contractors or the organization itself, we’re working on this together from the very ground level up.” The pastry shop’s main attraction, its macaron menu, will feature more than 20 delectable, colorful flavors. Beyond signature macarons, the shop’s selections will include gourmet chocolates, creamy French gelato, specialty European-style coffees, classic French pastries and homemade candies – in addition to a sampling of French wines, Champagnes, local beer and soft drinks. McKibben notes that the pistachio macarons and the homemade gelato are two options very likely to give customers an existential experience. Limited-time seasonal macaron flavors and offerings will be designed to keep customers coming back for more. All Le Macaron treats will be made without preservatives and with natural, gluten-free ingredients, to keep the French authenticity intact. “We just want to provide so many different offerings – be it gelato or the macarons or the other pastries – that allow everybody to find and explore and create their own favorites,” McKibben says. The space will offer indoor, café front and courtyard seating, as well as a party room to host anything from tea parties to corporate events. McKibben says he wants the shop to be an oasis for anyone from couples to kids to gatherings of friends. “You come in, and you’re not sure if you’re in a jewelry shop or a bakery or a combination,” he says of the aesthetic. “There’ll just be a uniqueness in the colors and the setting. It’s very much considered a slice of Paris. We can’t wait.” Le Macaron French Pastries of Saint Louis, 111 W. Lockwood Ave., Webster Groves, facebook.com/lemacaronstlouis

KDS offers a wide array of extracurricular opportunities for students to develop new skills and interests, and also provides educational resources and support services. Rush confirms, “We offer a wide variety of educational support services including an academically gifted program, speech and language therapy, and programs designed to meet the individual needs of students who learn differently.” On Friday, October 18, prospective parents can come and learn more about the mission and values of KDS. The open house will be held in the morning and involve a short presentation where the family can learn more about the mission of the school. “From there, parents are invited to join Friday Chapel, an all-school worship service, before splitting into groups for tours of the campus. n June, Akar opened in Clayton under executive chef and owner Bernie Lee, providing “flex-casual” comfort food with its roots in Asian cuisine. “The whole idea here is to showcase what I like to eat,” Lee says, explaining that akar means “roots” in Malay. “It’s what I like to cook, inspired by experiences from my travels and memories from my motherland, Malaysia. It’s also a different platform to showcase things I’ve never done before. The bottom line is comfort food.” In May, Lee closed his Hiro Asian Kitchen in St. Louis’ Downtown West neighborhood after six years of operation. His Hiro Poké Co. – Lee’s daytime business, which debuted last year – continues to operate in that municipality’s downtown in The Eatery Food Hall. At Akar, in the space vacated by Anthony’s Italian

No structural changes took place at the 850-squarefoot space, which seats 12 to 14 guests inside and 24 more on a pet-friendly patio. However, the interior design underwent an update to reflect Lee’s personal style, which he describes as “relaxed, laid-back, urban, chic – a boutique restaurant feel.” Highlights include custom lamp shades from Bali as well as pillowcases by local fashion designer Nina Ganci of SKIF International. Additional work by artisans includes a new bar top made by Goebel & Co. Furniture of St. Louis, serving ware by local artist Jeremy Segel-Moss and specialty candles by Post

Another highlight, a modern vegan take on spicy mapo tofu, contains mushroom “mincemeat,” a brown rice and quinoa mix, Sichuan pepper and herbs. chili sauce. Another dish close to Lee’s heart, Mama Lee’s Noodles, takes its inspiration from a vegetarian entrée his mother made annually for the Chinese New Year; his version features a veggie meatball with confit mushrooms, cashew and cured egg yolk bottarga (salted, cured fish roe). From the bar, guests can choose from a wine list that includes roughly 30 bottle options, as well as a selection of Asian spirits used in specialty cocktails like the Taiyo (Haku Japanese vodka, mandarin and lime juice, and sugar). So whether simply sipping a delightful cocktail or indulging in a full dinner, Akar makes a fine culinary prologue to catching Shakespeare in Love from Insight Theatre Company. “I’m looking forward to sharing our dishes with everybody,” Lee says. “There are a lot of foodies here who love and appreciate good food.”

Akar, 7641 Wydown Blvd., Clayton, Missouri,
Story: Playwright Will Shakespeare’s suffering from severe writer’s block even as Henslowe, who owns a theater where Will’s works sometimes play, presses him to deliver his latest – because Henslowe himself needs to settle a debt to shrewd businessman Fennyman, who doesn’t cotton to welshers. Coming to Will’s rescue is his pal and literary rival, acclaimed poet Christopher “Kit” Marlowe, who gives Will both advice and an outline for Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter. Frantic for fast money, Henslowe orders Will to hold auditions for that new play. Meanwhile, Viola de Lesseps, a wealthy merchant’s daughter, deeply admires Will’s abilities and also yearns to perform onstage, something forbidden to women in England in 1593. As a result, she attends the auditions disguised as “Thomas Kent” and immediately impresses Will with “his” talent – before disappearing. Will follows “Kent” to the latter’s home and leaves a note directing “him” to return to the theater. Later, Will and Kit crash a party at Kent’s house, where Will falls for Viola. His attraction to her angers Viola’s fiancé, the opportunistic, failing aristocrat Wessex, who demands Will’s name and threatens to kill him. In leaving, though, Will says his name is “Marlowe.” Inspired by love, Will quickly completes his new play, now called Romeo and Juliet. While Will and his players, including the legendary Ned Alleyn, rehearse at Henslowe’s theater, rival impresario Richard Burbage arrives, demanding that Will turn over the play the playwright had promised for his own company. After foiling Burbage, Will and his friends celebrate at a local pub, where Henslowe tells Kent that Will’s married. Now knowing Viola and Kent to be one and the same, Will tells her he’s estranged from his wife. No matter, though: Viola has committed to a loveless life with Wessex, who plans to return with her to his Virginia plantation in the American colonies. Can Will and his troupe stage his new play in time to save Henslowe from Fennyman? Can all of them avoid prosecution by Queen Elizabeth’s arrogant chamberlain for possibly allowing a woman onstage? Will Viola achieve her dream of acting before she honors her father’s wish and marries Wessex? Highlights: Insight Theatre Company celebrates its 50th production as its 12th season closes with an enchanting presentation of this Elizabethan comedy based on the 1998 film of the same title. Other Info: Released in December 1998, Shakespeare in Love garnered a whopping 13 Academy Award nominations, winning seven – including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. The stage adaptation by Lee Hall premiered in London in 2014, with its first American production at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2017. Insight is one of the first troupes to perform it in the States.
In Insight’s enjoyable, smartly paced production, director Suki Peters’ inspired guidance elicits strong performances from many in the unwieldy cast and adequate ones from others. A recurring problem, however, involves some of the singing (which, on opening night, often sounded off-key). Aaron Dodd and Gwendolyn Wotawa make a charming couple as Will and Viola. Wotawa also sparkles when disguised as Kent and when conversing passionately with her supportive nurse, whom Michelle Hand smartly portrays. In a real highlight, Spencer Sickmann savvily portrays Marlowe, showing the poet’s loyalty to Will and even doing a Cyrano de Bergerac as he feeds romantic lines to the playwright outside Viola’s balcony (a scene that captures Dodd’s comedic flair). Also, the penultimate scene between Dodd and Sickmann as Will and his late (albeit still genial) friend is both amusing and poignant. Just ignore that Virginia wasn’t yet an English colony in 1593 or that Shakespeare simply adapted an Italian version of Romeo and Juliet. After all, the play’s the thing, and Peters’ direction of her enthusiastic cast shows why it’s no mystery that Shakespeare in Love is so endearing.

Preschool teachers can attest to students’ heightened levels of energy, enthusiasm and wonder, tempered by the timidity new environments sometimes bring. In that light, Ready Readers suggests two comical tales that celebrate school. We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by author/illustrator Ryan T. Higgins introduces readers to Penelope Rex, a tenderfoot tyrannosaur with new-school-year jitters. Penelope wonders about her classmates: “What will they be like? How many teeth will they have?” Penelope’s parents, meanwhile, tackle first-day-of-school prep as Mom buys a backpack with ponies on it (“Penelope loves ponies because they’re so delicious!”), and Dad packs her lunch – 300 tuna sandwiches and an apple juice. On arriving in her classroom, Penelope discovers her classmates are
children! As a ravenously hungry dinosaur, she eats them without delay. However, Mrs. Noodleman, Penelope’s patient teacher, makes her spit them out at once. Hilarity ensues as Penelope struggles to strike a balance between being herself and being a good friend and classmate. She finally figures everything out thanks to the class pet, who finds Penelope delicious, too! In this month’s second featured book, Take Your Pet to School Day, author Linda Ashman and illustrator Suzanne Kaufman open the doors to Maple View School through a note to students that begins: “At Maple View, we have a rule: You cannot bring your pets to school. But
By Sheila Oliveri for just one special day, we’ve decided it’s okay … ” Excited children thereupon enter school with a wide assortment of pets. Cats and chicks, hamsters, horses and hedgehogs join pigs and more as they joyfully begin their day with a song. Tempering the children’s glee and excitement, however, are the staff’s confusion and consternation as they witness the arrival of the menagerie and the ensuing chaos and cacophony. All hopes of learning vanish as teachers seek to comprehend why every child has arrived at school on this day with a pet. The principal voices the question on everyone’s mind: “Who said these pets could come to school?“ Kaufman provides brightly colored illustrations, capturing the joy and calamity detailed in Ashman’s humorous rhyming text. Readers watch the fiasco unfold before ultimately being treated to a satisfying solution to the mystery of who actually authored the phony invitation.

The metro area’s most acclaimed purveyor of frozen treats celebrates its 90th anniversary.
I
t’s been awarded “World’s Best Ice Cream,” served countless times in its signature upside-down style and relished by everyone from local working stiffs to celebrities from out of town. Now it’s celebrating 90 years in business. St. Louis’ iconic Ted Drewes Frozen Custard is honoring the mega-milestone all year long with souvenir memorabilia and a new flavor (dubbed the St. Louis Classic) sure to become an instant hit. “We’re very lucky and blessed to be around this long – it’s a wonderful milestone to reach,” says Travis Dillon, who currently owns the operation with his wife, Christy, Ted Drewes Jr.’s daughter. In April, Ted Drewes’ Chippewa location held a 90th anniversary celebration featuring live music, classic cars and a variety of family-friendly activities. “Wonderful friends, fans and customers came up to congratulate us,” Dillon says, adding that although the 90-year souvenir cup has sold out, fans can still get their hands on special 90th anniversary memorabilia, including green Ted Drewes T-shirts, as well as coffee mugs and pint glasses. Fans also can savor the shop’s newest of more than 50 flavors: the St. Louis Classic. The concrete or sundae features a large piece of St. Louis’ famous gooey butter cake, topped with Ted Drewes’ signature vanilla custard, tart cherries and a Dad’s Original Scotch Oatmeal cookie. “We call it the ‘Classic’ because all of these are St. Louis classics,” Dillon says. The famous family business began with the late Ted Drewes Sr., an award-winning local tennis player, who opened his first eponymous custard stand in Florida in 1929.
13, 2019 | LadueNews.com 8282 September september 13, 2019 | LadueNews.com
The following two years, he launched two frozen custard stores in the metro area – on Natural Bridge Road and on South Grand. By 1941, the Drewes family opened a second South Side stand – the current Chippewa location on historic Route 66. Remaining today are Ted Drewes’ two South Side locations, at 6726 Chippewa St. – open 11 months a year, from the week of Valentine’s Day through the first week of January – and 4224 S. Grand Blvd. – open during summer, from mid-May through Labor Day. Throughout the years, the ice creamery – especially Ted Drewes’ signature “so thick it’s served upside down” concrete – has become synonymous with the metro area, as everyone from children to adults stop by following St. Louis Cardinals games or Gateway Arch visits. “We’re known for being able to turn our concretes upside down,” Dillon says, noting the legendary move started in 1959 after then-teenage customer Steve Gamber kept requesting the thickest malt the shop could make. Following days of serving Gamber thicker and thicker malts, “Ted Jr. finally left the milk out, just dished the hard custard and served it like that,” Dillon says. “Ted turned it upside down and said, ‘There, how’s that – thick enough?’” Today, Ted Drewes Jr. – born a year before the ice creamery came into existence – and his wife, Dottie, try to stop by at least once a week to pick up a Terra Mizzou – his secret blend of chocolate and pistachio nuts, Dillon says. “The Terra Mizzou concrete is their favorite right now,” he continues. “They’re doing well and taking care of each other.” One of the best parts of working at Ted Drewes is interacting with customers, from average Joes to celebrities, Dillon says. “Some people want to try a different flavor each time they come in, and some want to come get their favorite,” he comments, adding the stores have welcomed VIPs ranging from St. Louis Cardinals players to actors Jon Hamm and John Goodman, broadcasters Bob Costas and Katie Couric, and music star Katy Perry. Moreover, in 1985, when the popular Chippewa location expanded from five to a whopping 12 windows to better serve its growing customer base, former Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt visited. Ted Drewes is very thankful for its loyal customers who have helped it reach its landmark 90th year, Dillon says. Since 1990, Ted Drewes Jr. and Dillon have treated their “hall of fame members” – customers who have been visiting the stands for 30 or more years – to an annual lunch in gratitude of their patronage. “It started with about five customers, and has grown to about 25 members today, and we add one or two each year,” Dillon says.

Dillon also credits the company’s longevity to its staff, which includes his two sons, Bryan and Joshua – making it a fourth-generation family business. “The people who work for us are one big reason why we’re doing so well,” Dillon says. “Our employees are so sharp, and they want to work so hard. Without our management, employees and customers, we wouldn’t still be here.” At one time, all of Ted Drewes Sr.’s six grandchildren and their wives worked at Ted Drewes. “Maybe his [eight] greatgrandkids will work here, too,” Dillon adds. Though franchising always has been off the table, Dillon says the ice creamery remains open to expansion. “We get asked for franchising over and over again, and we don’t want to because we want to keep the quality of the product and the customer service as good as we can get them,” he says, noting his sons are set to continue the family tradition and take over the business someday. “That’s the whole plan for our future – the fourth generation,” Dillon says. “And we’re going to do our best to work on the next 10 years – for 100.” Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, 6726 Chippewa St., St. Louis, 314-481-2652; 4224 S.
