EDITOR’S NOTE Last weekend, The Rep opened its 2012-2013 season with Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs. I’ve always been a fan of Mr. Simon’s work because of the way he dissects the concept of family to make it relevant to everyone’s family. Brighton Beach Memoirs is the story of the Jeromes, a Jewish family in Brooklyn in the late 1930s. Considering my background—a Catholic, Filipina-American girl who spent her adolescent years in the Midwest—at face value, I wouldn’t have identified with this play. But there lies Mr. Simon’s gift: No matter who you are, you’ll find a little (or a lot) of yourself in his work. From heavy-duty ponderings about the significance of a family unit (This is a family. The world doesn’t survive without families.) and forgiveness (Sure it hurts, but if you love someone, you forgive them.), to the glorious effect of ice cream (It’s amazing how quickly you recover from misery when someone offers you ice cream.), Mr. Simon captures our universal experience as human beings who love and who are loved. Here’s to families!

Jackpot for Wishes MAKE-A-WISH MISSOURI By Diane Anderson

he St. Louis Cardinals’ wives came out to Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar to support Make-a-Wish Foundation and its work of granting wishes to children who have life-threatening medical conditions. Guests were treated to sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, followed by the main course and sweet treats for dessert. Make-a-Wish has granted more than 4,500 wishes since 1983. The gala hit an all-time record for the local chapter and raised more than $165,000! Event committee co-chairs were Lilibet and Jeffrey Iken, Annie and John Gatewood, and Susan and Jerry Ullman. Also in attendance was LuAnn Bott, CEO and president of Make-A-Wish Missouri.

Don Draper’s good deed: Mad Men star JON HAMM was in town earlier this month to help raise funds to build a new performing arts center and athletic center at his alma mater, John Burroughs School. While in St. Louis, the actor visited with several of his former teachers, including retired football coach JIM LEMEN and WAYNE SALOMON, his theater teacher and chair of the school’s theater department. Hamm is spearheading efforts to name the black box theatre in the new building in honor of Salomon. Completion for the new facilities is expected sometime next year.

Another girl became her high school freshman class president after leaving Marian. And in 2012, the middle school saw its first college graduate complete her education at University of Missouri. In just 13 years, the all-girls school has marked countless milestones in its efforts to break the cycle of poverty through education. “Our goal is to serve the underserved and make these opportunities available to girls of promise who wouldn’t have them otherwise,” says Marian board member Susan Conrad. Marian was founded in 1999 by seven orders of nuns, with a goal of providing quality education in the city. The independent Catholic school teaches grades five to eight for up to 75 students from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds, with most qualifying for free or reduced lunch. As part of the NavityMiguel network, the South City institution

The extended day allows for extracurricular activities that range from athletics to a new culinary arts program, along with an intensive academic focus that includes mandatory study hall. That academic focus also helps to play catch up for girls who may arrive at Marian a grade level or two behind, says board member Marcia Niedringhaus. “In that fouryear period, it gives us a chance to bring them up to grade level or advance beyond.” Going beyond is a key part of Marian, as its motto states, Educating girls for life. To that end, the school journeys with the students past the critical middle school years, through high school and into college. When they graduate from Marian,

In return, Marian offers financial aid and college prep programs to the students. “We want to make sure they understand this investment in their education will pay off—they will have better jobs, more opportunities and chances to help their families,” Conrad says. “We want to continue to reinforce the idea of positive role models and behaviors so these girls realize they can achieve what they set their minds to, despite the obstacles they face.” The school also encourages family involvement, and it has a 99 percent attendance rate at parentteacher conferences. The commitment is reinforced with a small tuition component of $30 to $50 a month. To cover the rest of the $12,000 it costs to educate each girl annually, Marian relies on special events, grants, individual donations and corporate support. “We have tremendous talent in the classroom, wonderful leadership and fantastic volunteers, but we have to have the financial sustainabiliCONTINUED ON PAGE 71

H

is style may be easygoing and laid-back—even undecorated, if you will, but Michael S. Smith is one of the hardest-working designers in the business. After all, it’s not just anyone who’s asked to design the First Family’s private residence or the Oval office. He’s done both, in addition to authoring three design books and designing several furniture lines. Most recently, he was named creative consultant for Brunschwig & Fils. We had the opportunity to ask Smith a few questions about his approach to design, its importance in the larger scheme of things, and a few more odds and ends.

THE INTERIOR OF CLARK GRAVES IS FILLED WITH ANTIQUE TREASURES.

CLARK GRAVES ANTIQUES CELEBRATES MILESTONE

T

HOW HE GOT WHERE HE IS NOW: I’m just lucky, I guess, but I also worked so hard without any distraction. I still have many a sleepless night worrying about a wall or a ceiling color, or the right sofa. I am constantly, constantly challenging myself. ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD DESIGN: I’m sure there are some people who would

he dapper and ever-charming Robert Morrissey is celebrating his 30th anniversary at Clark Graves Antiques, which bears the distinction of being the oldest antiques gallery in St. Louis. The shop was originally owned by Clark Graves, an interior designer who was born in 1917 and highly regarded within St. Louis design circles for his refined eye and exquisite taste. Graves moved the shop to its present location on Meramec Avenue in Clayton in 1948 and hired Morrissey, who had a background in art history from Saint Louis University, as a clerk in 1982. A year after Graves passed away, Morrissey took over the shop and has been at the helm ever since. Through the years, Morrissey has successfully maneuvered the many twists and turns in the world of European antiques and importing and has emerged as a respected authority and appraiser in the field. Now in its 64th year, Clark Graves Antiques continues to specialize in fine 18th and early 19th-century English and Continental furniture and accessories, including Georgian, Regency, Empire, Biedermeier and Provincial styles.

argue that it’s not as important, but to me, it’s important. Living in rooms that I love and think are beautiful does change my life. It’s a great luxury, and I feel very fortunate. But I think there’s only so much that decoration can do. It does inspire you to be conscious of beauty all around. That’s why I try not to be closed about things. There’s beauty everywhere.

WHETHER HE HAS A TRADEMARK STYLE: I’m sure there are people who would say I do. I think it’s really more about the mix, and I am always really interested in a kind of balance. It’s sort of like the four food groups of decorating. If it’s for a very, very traditional or very, very formal project, I always like one odd element that comes into play and is unexpected. I always want to create a space that someone can fill it with their own life. I don’t want to overdecorate or be overly specific.

WHY HIS ROOMS NEVER LOOK LIKE THE DECORATOR HAS JUST COME AND GONE: Nothing should be so constructed or so designed with a capital ‘D’ that you really can’t live in the space. This is something that I always strive for. It’s like the old adage that a well-dressed woman should take one accessory off before leaving the house. You should under-do it to some degree, so that there is more room for a child’s fingerpainting or a vase you bought at a tag sale or something that a relative leaves you. Have a house that is a living thing and not completely stiff and frozen.

The steel artisan closed his 5,000-square-foot workshop and retail store Blend (both were located on Locust Street), but continues to design and manufacture furniture and lighting for a host of corporate clients on a national level, including Starbucks, Google, Facebook, Kiehls, and interior designers such as Kara Mann and Clodagh. “We do 95 percent of our work in New York, L.A., Chicago and Austin,” says Beck, who exhibits annually at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. Locally, the company recently completed an office job with Nehring Design for Nehring’s client, Interapptive, in the KMOV building downtown. Plus, Beck says he’s in talks with the folks at Arlene Lilie Interior Design about jazzing up their place. “Some folks like to call me an artist because of the things I create, but I don’t think so. I’m a regular guy—just any random guy you’d see walking down the street,” he says. “The only difference is I got lucky, and I’m able to do the things I love for a living.”

Q&A Deane Bernoudy Hawkins

By Nancy Robinson

his week, Ladue News spoke with Deane Bernoudy Hawkins, greatniece of William Adair Bernoudy, about the architect’s family legacy, how he felt about life in St. Louis, and how he might view the upcoming Ladue News Show House, which he designed in 1960 for the Horan family in Town & Country. The 2012 William Bernoudy Ladue News Show House opens Oct. 5 and runs through Oct. 21.

T

Long Lasting Luxury FLOORS FOR OVER 100 YEARS

Owners

of St. Louis’ fine homes require the best; quality materials and superior workmanship.

LN: What do you think about the Show House, which celebrates the work of your great-uncle and underscores its timeless appeal? DBH: Our family is excited that Ladue News is featuring his home and helping to preserve the memory of his work. He loved St. Louis, and he was dedicated to bringing fine art and culture to the area. Bill and his wife, Gertrude, were very generous in their support of all types of art, as well as great supporters of animals and the underdog. They led a truly amazing life, and their legacy lives on in the homes, museums, universities and temples he built and at the Humane Society. I think he would be thrilled that his work is still being recognized as pioneering and significant. LN: Did you know your uncle very well? DBH: Bill is my great-uncle, the brother of my paternal grandfather, Jerome Bernoudy. Growing up, we periodically visited with Bill and Gertrude at their home on Litzsinger Road. LN: What was the Bernoudys’ own home like?

(314) 432-2260 • www.missourifloor.com 44

LN SEPTEMBER 14, 2012

DBH: Bill and Gertrude had a beautiful, simple home. It was open and airy with artwork displayed throughout. The home also highlighted several of Bill’s stainedglass pieces, which we always loved. In the garden, Lipchitz’s Birth of the Muses was featured and could be seen from the living room. (It is on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden now.) LN: How would you describe your uncle’s personal style and personality? DBH: Bill and Gertrude were always impeccably dressed, their home was immaculate and they always seemed so sophisticated. Whenever you were in their home, they were warm and welcoming and had a tale to tell, whether it was about a family member or a famous artist. Despite the people they knew and the status they had, they were always gracious hosts and made everyone feel welcome. LN: Was your uncle accessible, or did he seem to belong to the realm of intellectuals and artists? DBH: Bill never seemed inaccessible to me as a child because he was just a part of the family. We knew he was ‘important’ and well-known, but it was not made to be a big deal. If anything, he seemed genuine and kind. At the time, I was more impressed by the art side because their home was filled with famous works of art, in particular, works by Picasso. Ironically, Gertrude seemed more inaccessible because we actually knew of the people she was connected to in the art world, and she was so glamorous! That was very impressive to us as kids!

LN: Do you remember much about the houses he designed? DBH: As a child, I only really knew of two of the homes he designed: his own and one that was owned by a cousin on my mother’s side. In all honesty, my memory of the homes is that they didn’t have any place to play inside—just really awesome yards! LN: When did your uncle’s architectural work become celebrated in St. Louis? What was that experience like for him? DBH: Bill’s work was recognized by the St. Louis area long before I was alive, so he was already in the spotlight when I was a child. He was very humble about his accomplishments. He and Gertrude were more likely to tell a story about someone else’s accomplishments, or about an animal in need. LN: Do you have any insights into how your uncle felt about his life in St. Louis? DBH: Bill had a great affection for St. Louis. He traveled the world and interacted with some of the most interesting people of his time, but always considered St. Louis home. He loved St. Louis, and I know he would be proud to have left his mark in the architecture world here.

CG: I love old Tudors and have worked on quite a few, but lately I’ve been drawn to the more modern styles with open spaces and lots of windows. (4) LN: Five things can’t you live without? CG: People can live without a lot of things, but what makes my life better are Samson, a loving partner, great friends and family, travel, and good clients who are willing to look at things in a new way. Charmin Smith, (’93), loved working with classmates to integrate the school’s Commons area into a place where diverse groups of students would interact with each other, rather than remaining isolated within their own ethnic and cultural groups. “It was about stepping outside of your own comfort zone to get to know different people,” she notes. “I’ve continued to do this throughout my life.”

Judge Todd Edelman, (’86), Superior Court of District of Columbia, says he will never live down driving his 1976 Cutlass Supreme through the fence of a house across the street from the school. Thirty years later, he continues to blame a darting squirrel for the awkward accident.

t’s that time of year again. School busses are back on the streets. The kids may or may not be bummed out about summer being over. Nonetheless, moms and dads are probably celebrating about getting some ‘me’ time back. This also is the brief time of the year when pediatric offices are not so busy. The summer rush of school and sports physicals is over, and the children in school have not yet generously shared their germs with each other. However, it’s only a matter of time. So how can Mom and Dad determine when their child is too sick to go to school and it’s better to keep him or her at home? First, ask yourself these four basic questions: Will my child be safe at school? Will his classmates be safe from catching something from him at school? Will she be able to learn anything today? Is there adequate care at school, especially if her condition worsens during the day? If the answer to any of these is ‘no,’ then your child should stay home. If your child has what seems like a common cold (sniffles, mild cough and a mild sore throat) with no fever, he should be well enough to attend school and participate in classroom activities. If he has just vague, non-specific complaints of aches, pains, just doesn’t feel well, stomach ache without vomiting or diarrhea and no fever, he should be able to go to school. Your child also can go to school if he has head lice, scabies or ringworm and has been treated. Likewise, she can return to school when she feels like it, has no fever and has had her strep throat treated for 24 hours. There are specific signs and symptoms of illness you should look for to keep your child home from school, including if she just looks sick to you. As a pediatrician, I know that moms know! Other symptoms

I

include: ➤ A fever of 100.4 degrees or higher. ➤ Thick drainage from the eyes or eye pain. ➤ Thick, green nasal drainage or a significant cough present, especially if it lasts more than seven to 10 days. These aren’t necessarily indications of a bacterial infection, but should be evaluated. Remember, the common cold lasts up to two weeks. Usually only the first day or two are really uncomfortable and children are most infectious during that time. Coughing and sniffling that don’t interfere with activity aren’t dangerous. ➤ Sore throat, especially if there also are swollen glands in the neck, fever or a fine rash that feels like sandpaper. ➤ Vomiting or diarrhea, especially through the night. ➤ Rash associated with fever. ➤ An active case of the chicken pox. Your child can return to school when all lesions are fully crusted. (Remember that the chicken pox vaccine works and your child can avoid this illness!) ➤ Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. School attendance is important. Kids can’t learn if they’re not there and it can be hard to catch up after an absence. Some children may actually exaggerate symptoms in an attempt to stay home—imagine that. Sometimes decisions about whether a child should stay home or go to school can be complicated by mom’s or dad’s work responsibilities. Regardless, trust your instincts, follow these guidelines, and make the right decision for your child, his classmates and his teachers.

ongwriters and musicians flock to Nashville, creating music as diverse and exciting as bluegrass, Americana, Gospel, rock, pop, Grammywinning classical and of course, country. Whether in gargantuan venues such as The Grand Ole Opry, halls like the Schermerhorn Symphony Center or the reachout-and-touch-the-guitars intimacy of the bluegrass jam sessions at the Station Inn, music of some kind or another always is wafting through the nooks and crannies of this city. After dark, check out the honky-tonk bars along Broadway: Robert’s with the big red boot, Tootsies Orchid Lounge next door where you’re likely to rub elbows with Opry stars, and Legends Corner with its tip jar for struggling musicians. fascinating showcase of the city’s musical history; and for insatiable music buffs, there’s the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the world’s largest music museum. Nowhere is the fusion of history and contemporary elegance captured more beautifully than in The Hermitage Hotel, which opened in 1910. Italian sienna marble, Russian walnut wall panels and a breathtaking stained glass ceiling delight as you enter the vaulted lobby. Its Capitol Grille is considered the finest dining in town by Nashvillians ‘in the know.’ The Hermitage has been a longtime recipient of the AAA Five Diamond Award and Forbes Travel Guide’s Five Star Award. In the spring of 2011, the hotel was named No. 6 on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best hotels in the U.S. For true Southern cooking, travel a bit outside the city for the quaint country charm of the Loveless Café, where the likes of Princess Anne, Al Gore, Tim McGraw and Martha Stewart (what a gathering that would be!) have raved about the country ham, red-eye gravy and scratch biscuits. Belle Meade Plantation, the queen of Tennessee plantations, recalls the dark times of slavery and the grandeur of private estates. A leisurely ride under the stars on the General Jackson Showboat takes you back in time to the heyday of paddlewheel riverboats along the Cumberland River. Frist Center for the Visual Arts is superb, and Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art is lovely. We also strolled the grounds of The Hermitage, home and plantation of President Andrew Jackson, and imagined the respite he must have found there with his beloved wife, Rachel. Also not to be missed: The evening ghost tours at historic Carnton Plantation, the most-haunted building in Tennessee and the site of five of the bloodiest hours of the Civil War. With any luck, you’ll encounter the weeping maiden, the fiddler in the parlor or the noisy kitchen ghost. Legendary songwriter Harlan Howard once said, Country music is three chords and the truth. I found Nashville and its inextricable country music to be made up of many pleasures and chords—and that’s the truth.

TANGENTIAL THINKER

Unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world...* By Debbie Baldwin Beyoncé

K-Stew’s latest non-Twilight movie, On the Road, premiered last week at the Toronto Film Festival. After cheating on longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson with her Snow White director, Stewart is concerned that her personal life may have been a factor in some of the reviews. Trust me, I’ve seen the trailer for that movie. Her off-camera scandals can only help.

It would seem that the pop superstar is on the outs with her friend Kanye West’s best girl, Kim Kardashian. Rumors were flying last week that Beyoncé and hubby Jay-Z were completely ignoring Kim at a gathering—even turning their backs to her. Maybe they just didn’t recognize her. I mean, it’s possible they haven’t seen her sex tape. Christina Aguilera

So You Think You Can Dance

The reality dance competition is wrapping up its ninth season, preparing to crown America’s best dancer. After the show’s conclusion, the top 10 finalists will go on a national tour to show off their various styles. I’m sorry…I dozed off there for a second, where was I?

The singer said in a recent interview that her greatest worry about her body is getting too thin. She was quoted as saying she is pleased with her extra weight and happy she has a booty. Yeah, I saw last season of The Voice—I’m pretty sure that too-thin thing is not keeping her up at night.

y children have always been active in sports—not in that ‘future college draft’ kind of way, but in that ‘future case-of-beer-in-the-park-with-yourbuddies’ kind of way. Even so, we’ve had our share of, ahem, incidents. We’ve all read the stories of fathers beating up their kids’ coaches, parents running on the field to protest a call, etc. So, it was with some trepidation that I faced the world of high school sports. Cranky is now in the ninth grade and plays on her high school tennis team. I try to avoid her matches because frankly, I tend to

get a little irrational myself (I secretly dread a viral video of myself berating my child in front of a crowd of drop-jawed composed parents). On a side note, I walk a fine line in terms of crowd etiquette with my child. I can clap, but not cheer; sit, but not stand. I can chat with another parent, but not talk on my phone—a fine edict coming from a 14-year-old girl whose phone seems to have melded to her palm. So with girded loins, I attended Cranky’s first match—a doubles tournament at a local Catholic high school. Cranky was on the court with her partner in a close match, with the mothers of her opponents sitting on the bench next to me. The other team hit a terrific put away shot. The mothers cheered for their daughters and I bristled— maybe partly due to the fact that they were permitted to cheer. I start grinding my jaw. I sense their animosity and I know they can sense mine. My daughter double faults. Come on! I mutter under my breath. That’s when it happened. The woman sitting next to me turned. She looked at me with a smile, and with a charming Southern accent said, Which one is yours? The nerve, right? I point to Cranky and said, Ponytail. She smiled and said, Oh, she’s a beautiful player. It’s an advantage to be a lefty. It’s suddenly dawning on me that it might be possible to be civil while rooting for your child at a sporting event. She clapped for her daughter and I complimented the shot. I learned that their family had just moved to St. Louis a couple of years ago and that her daughter, a senior, is the youngest of two. The match ended—her daughter won—I congratulated her and mentioned offhandedly that it was nice chatting with her. What a nice introduction to high school sports. Turns out there is such a thing as friendly competition. Who knew? It may be late in the game for this, literally, but is it possible I’m growing up?

Oh the Humanity MOVIE REVIEW—ROBOT AND FRANK By Debbie Baldwin

think if I were a filmmaker and someone described one of my movies as nice, I would be insulted. But I can honestly say, when I describe this film as nice, I mean it as a huge compliment. It’s a creative, funny, weird—yet human—story about families and life, oh, and a robot. Frank Weld (Frank Langella) is a retired cat burglar. He is living in rural New York state, in the near future, and struggling with dementia. His only pleasure is his daily walk to the local library to check out books and visit with the friendly librarian, Jennifer (Susan Sarandon). Realizing that Frank cannot take care of himself, his son, Hunter (James Marsden), brings him an assist robot (Peter Sarsgaard). Think of it as the latest version of a home health care provider. The robot cooks and cleans and tries to keep Frank’s mind stimulated with gardening and hobbies. But when Frank discovers that the robot has certain skills and not much programming when it comes to the criminal justice system, Frank thinks of a new hobby for them to try. Honestly, I had no complaints about this movie. There is a sensitivity and intelligence to it, and it addresses the concept of what having memories means to be human with elegance. On top of that, it’s a funny, quirky little story. It won’t blow you away, but I found it refreshing.

Blah Blah Blah MOVIE REVIEW—THE WORDS By Debbie Baldwin

was really looking forward to this film. The cast is incredible and the premise is intriguing: A young writer struggling with mediocrity happens upon a brilliant manuscript and claims it as his own. What could possibly go wrong there? In theory, this would be an incredible film. Unfortunately, we know all too well that what works in theory doesn’t always work in practice. Our story—well, our first story—begins with novelist Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) reading selections from his latest bestseller, The Words. (Now brace yourselves, because if you thought Inception had a lot of layers…) Clay steps out on stage to enthusiastic applause and begins the story within the story. Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) is a pie-eyed optimist. He is moving to Manhattan with his college sweetheart, Dora (Zoe Saldana), and he is going to be the next Salinger or Hemingway. His dream starts to fade as he is met with rejection after rejection. That is when he happens upon a vintage valise in a Paris thrift shop. Tucked inside is a manuscript that moves him to tears, a profound work of fiction. After 30 or 40 seconds of hand-wringing, he submits the novel as his own, and is instantly the darling of the New York literary world. His Cinderella story is happening, and that’s when he meets the old man (Jeremy Irons), the actual author of the manuscript. The old man then tells Rory the story within the story within the story. I don’t know why this movie misses the mark so badly, but it does. It’s pretentious without being particularly intelligent; it’s complicated without being thought out; and it sets you up for a rewarding payoff, which it never delivers. Jeremy Irons is brilliant and brings some much-needed humanity to an unsubstantial script.

STORY: Eugene Morris Jerome is 15 years old and just about sure of what he wants to do with his life. If he has his druthers, he’ll be playing professional baseball for the New York Yankees, his hometown team, in the year 1937. Otherwise, Eugene plans to be a writer. As such, he chronicles the daily goings-on in the Jerome household, which he shares with his parents, Jack and Kate, older brother, Stanley, widowed Aunt Blanche and her two daughters, Nora and Laurie. It’s a tight fit, squeezing seven people into the modest Brighton Beach home shared by the Jeromes in the shadow of Coney Island. While Jack tries to make ends meet with two jobs, there are ominous winds blowing in Europe, which Jack fears will lead to another war. Meanwhile, Eugene is more concerned about getting close looks at his beautiful older cousin and avoiding his mother’s dreaded liver and onions. HIGHLIGHTS: In the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! category, Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first play written by Neil Simon to be produced by The Rep in its illustrious 46-year history. To atone for that glitch, artistic director Steven Woolf teams with his estimable cast and crew for a memorable presentation of characters. OTHER INFO: While the playwright’s early career was

marked by comedies, many of his later efforts, such as this one, balance amusing one-liners with poignant drama. Director Woolf maintains a smooth and comfortable pace in the work’s two acts, although the second stanza bogs down occasionally, most notably in some scenes between Nora and her indecisive mother. Adam Heller makes Jack a sturdy and solid type. As Kate, Lori Wilner exudes strength and consistency, but also shows us her own blind spots. Christianne Tisdale, Aly Viny and Jamey Jacobs Powell suitably fill the roles of Blanche, Nora and Laurie, respectively with both angst and dry humor. Michael Curran-Dorsano finely depicts Stanley as a young man. And, as Eugene, Ryan DeLuca is the glue that holds this story together, throwing off amusing one-liners, but also sharing his and Simon’s observations with the audience about all matters of consequence in the household. RATING: A 4.5 ON A SCALE OF 1-TO-5.

➤ Chef JACK MACMURRAY III has taken the position of executive chef at Schneithorst’s Restaurant & Bar. MacMurray recently announced the move on his Facebook page, adding, “Look for German-American favorites with my Jack Mac Twist.” MacMurray, formerly the executive chef at Sage in Soulard, has been consulting on a number of projects since leaving that post last year.

➤ Balabans Wine Cellar & Tapas Bar will be expanding its space and operations this fall. The restaurant has secured adjacent space in the Dierbergs Marketplace for a new private event space and a wine room for dining as well as a new home for its Library of Wines. The new space will be open for bookings beginning Nov. 19, and will expand the restaurant by some 45 percent. We’re told the wine store, restaurant and deli will remain open during the renovations. ➤ Thai 202 is now open seven days a week at 235 N. Euclid in the CWE, next to Big Sleep Books. Billed as ‘Advanced Thai Food,’ the new eatery boasts a variety of delectables, from pot stickers to curry dishes, and features dine-in, as well as take-out and delivery services.

➤ Schlafly Beer and Urban Chestnut

Brewing Company are teaming up for Oktoberfest St. Louis on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 23, from noon until 7 p.m. The event will take place at Urban Chestnut, 3229 Washington Ave., and will feature German food, music and, of course, plenty of beer. Steins are available for purchase for $4 in advance or $5 at the event, and $8 one-liter fills will be available. No tickets are required. ➤ Stonehaus Farms Vineyard & Winery in Lee’s Summit, Mo., has won the 2012 Missouri Governor’s Cup for its Strother Ridge Vignoles Semi Sweet. The vino was chosen from a field of almost 300 wines. Nine judges from across the country conduct blind tastings to determine the winner of the Governor’s Cup, which recognizes the best wine in the state. Congratulations!

➤ Mosaic Restaurants has updated the dinner, wine and cocktail offerings at its downtown and Des Peres locations. Highlights include hot and cold tapas, plus entree items of some favorite guest dishes, a streamlined wine list, a selection of reserve wines, and seasonal and classic cocktails, including one of our all-time favorites, The Last Word. —Matt Sorrell

WINE & D INE ELEVEN ELEVEN MISSISSIPPI

By Sidney Lewis

ince it opened in Lafayette Square in 2003, Eleven Eleven Mississippi has earned a reputation as a first-rate culinary destination, the flagship eatery in the restaurant group of Paul and Wendy Hamilton, who also own Vin de Set, PW Pizza and Moulin Events. Chef Carl Hazel, late of The Scottish Arms, recently came aboard to run the stoves at Eleven Eleven, so the time was ripe to revisit. We were seated on the upper level of the restaurant, the better to enjoy the open kitchen, exposed beams and soaring ceilings. Despite the busy dining room and relatively close proximity of the tables, carrying on a conversation at low volume was easily done. Normally, we try to stay on-menu as much as possible, but the pork belly appetizer special ($9) was too tasty to pass up. The succulent belly had a beautiful layer of crust on top and was served with a couple of slices of mild roasted apple and some Swiss chard. Fortunately, the rich, fatty cut was small enough to just whet, not curb, the appetite. Next up, the main event: the 12 oz. Char Crust Dry-Rubbed Ribeye ($26) and the Wild Boar Ravioli ($18). The steak came out pink and juicy, perched on a layer of cheddar potato gratin, topped with a dollop of gorgonzola butter and garnished with a sprig of rosemary. There’s not much better combination to be had than good ol’ meat and potatoes, and this entree was the epitome of simple deliciousness. We asked our waiter for a wine recommendation to go with this dish, and he came through with flying colors,

S

steering us to a glass of 2009 McManis Barbera from California ($8) a bold, fruitforward wine that perfectly complemented the rare steak. It’s this kind of knowledgeable service that keeps Eleven Eleven at the top of so many diners’ lists. The ravioli has been a menu item for quite a while. We were pleased to see the new kitchen regime carried it over, and that it was every bit as delicious as we remembered. Some may balk at ordering wild boar, thinking it to be necessarily tough or gamey, but it was anything but. The shredded meat was encased in tender pasta, served in a tomato-vodka cream sauce with some parmigiano-reggiano on top. The rich sauce and sharp cheese nicely augmented the lean, flavorful boar. For dessert, we ordered the Flourless Chocolate Torta ($7). The dessert menu featured suggested wine and liqueur pairings for each item; and for the torta, the recommended libation was a Terra d’ Oro Zinfandel Port ($7). These two made fine partners, indeed. The deeply flavored dessert wine, another California gem, had notes of fruits and chocolate that married deliciously with the torta and the raspberry drizzle that accompanied it. It takes consistently fine food and great service to make a restaurant successful in the current economic climate, and we’re pleased to report that Eleven Eleven continues to have an abundance of both.

WITH CHEF JOHN

Q: Chef, I heard you were in Louisiana recently to open restaurants for a new casino. Did you find any interesting recipes while there that would be good for the chilly months coming up? A: I had a great experience down there, working side-by-side so many talented chefs who created some of their more famous dishes like gumbo and etouffée. While getting ready for Hurricane Isaac to blow its way through late last month, I came across a wonderful recipe that reminded me of the creamed corn and bacon dish my mother would make on cold winter days. I found two talented chefs who make it two different ways: Chef Otis Dickerson with his soulful recipe, and Chef Troy Deano, with his modern, lighter succotash style, really put their hearts into their dishes that have been passed down through the generations. Below, I have a recipe that will work whether you like the richness of the butter and cream, or a healthier version with delicious flavor.

DIRECTIONS: Render your tasso in butter until crispy. Add onion and celery, and cook until tender. Add red pepper and garlic. When vegetables are cooked, add corn and cook, moving the corn constantly to keep from browning. After about five or 10 minutes, add stock, cream and dry seasonings. Reduce to low heat, cover and let braise for 30 minutes. Sauce should begin to thicken. In the last 5 minutes of cooking, add green onion and taste for flavor. FOR A LIGHTER DISH, MAKE THE FOLLOWING SUBSTITUTIONS:

Canola oil for butter Low-fat ham for tasso (this also will reduce the spiciness of the dish). Use low-sodium chicken stock. Omit cream.

The event, sponsored by Mercy Children’s Hospital St. Louis and emceed by KMOX’s Debbie Monterrey, offers attendees a chance to learn about Marian and meet the girls who directly benefit from their support. “It’s a room full of women in the community who have benefitted from great education and now we have an opportunity to make a difference for these girls. It’s a very powerful evening,” says Conrad, who is chairing this year’s event. As one of the owners of The Chase, Niedringhaus is happy to contribute to Marian’s mission. “It’s been great to have the chance to support another independent organization that has deep roots in the city, with the long traditions of the religious sisters who founded and supported the school. We can see the difference it makes in the community.” The success of Girls Night Out will help to perpetuate the efforts of Marian Middle School, which Niedringhaus hopes will continue to flourish. “We’ve never had to turn a girl away from the support she needs, whether it’s academic, financial, emotional or spiritual. Given the daily challenges they face, these girls may have not had any idea that they could have these opportunities. They have the chance to dream big from the beginning.”
