EDITOR ‌I LOVE LIVING AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE – AND GETTING TO WEAR the comfy activewear that comes with it. Still, I knew even before my son was born that I didn’t want him living solely in the gym shorts and graphic tees that seem to dominate the boys’ clothing market. Although I can’t exactly pinpoint why, I knew that I wanted his clothes to mirror his cute little personality. While I thought this was solely a “boy mom” problem, it turns out that I’m not alone. Ellen Pendry, founder of Blue Mark Handmade – a kids clothing line designed for both style and comfort – created her itty-bitty boutique after becoming similarly frustrated with the kids clothing market. Ladue News digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter shares how Pendry got her business started, her inspiration for the clothes and more, starting on p. 46. Also in this week’s edition, we hope you enjoy learning about the newest co-working space in St. Louis: Covo. Starting on p. 52, LN contributing writer Connie Mitchell speaks to Covo CEO Rebecca Pan about the collaborative, community-centered work environment. Mitchell delves into the array of amenities – from phone rooms to meeting rooms and, dare we say it, nap rooms – as well as the inviting environment Pan and her team strive to create. We hope you enjoy learning more about this exciting new space for local entrepreneurs. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

lients always come first at Hais, Hais & Goldberger, P.C. Working in the field of family law for decades has taught these talented lawyers the importance of treating each client with the dignity and dedication that they deserve. “We’re never unnecessarily tough with our clients,” states attorney Susan Hais. “That is not to say that we don’t give them realistic expectations. When people come in to see you, they are [often] at the worst time in their lives. To show compassion makes the process a lot easier. I don’t know that you can teach compassion. You either have it or you don’t.” All seven of the firm’s lawyers possess this allimportant attribute. That is, in part, thanks to the careful vetting process of Susan and her husband, fellow attorney Sam Hais. “[We] select lawyers that have the qualities [we] are looking for, and then [we] teach them,” describes Susan Hais. “We think it is important to work hard, be diligent and be in [constant] communication. Be tenacious. We don’t have Sam and Susan Hais. | Photo by Sarah Conroy control over the judges, but we do have control over how we want to try our cases. So, to some extent, we have control over the endgame. We teach our lawyers that if you really care and go in prepared, the clients will recognize and appreciate it.” Compassion begins at the outset of each relationship between client and attorney. “It’s absolutely essential to the attorney-client relationship to

return calls, respond to e-mails and, if possible, to meet with people sufficiently, so that they understand you care about them,” stresses Sam Hais. “After all, they are hurting. They feel alone in the world and don’t know where to turn. If you provide a stop-gap to those feelings of loneliness, frustration and fear, it does wonders for people’s courage and fortitude to withstand the process.” For the Haises and their team, the commitment to each client is rock steady. “I am on call 24/7,” explains Susan Hais. “One doesn’t have a choice. Some clients call with an immediate crisis. If somebody contacts me, I respond back, no matter where I am. With domestic relations, things happen quickly. It’s very personal and immediate.” It all comes down to truly caring about each person who walks through the firm’s doors, seeking help and expert guidance during a most tumultuous time in their lives. “I feel good about what I do,” says Susan Hais. “I feel good about helping people. I like what I do and I find it interesting. I guess I’m kind of lucky.” “In the final analysis, that is why we work as hard as we do,” adds Sam Hais. “There’s only one way to do it – and that’s the right way.”

Store Profile

Ditto Family Resale

By Amanda Dahl

Ditto is getting a makeover. “We have so many donations, and not just from our schools, but from our shoppers, donors and the community at large,” says ana Woodard, a board member and volunteer. “they’ve blessed us with so much that we’re just bursting at the seams!” This excess has allowed the nonprofit resale shop to grow exponentially, with work to expand the store already underway. “We’ve taken on more space in the lower level to increase our sorting, storage and retail capabilities,” details Deborah shields, general manager. “Phase One of our expansion has begun and, altogether, we will add about 7,000 square feet of space.” Ditto’s proceeds go to eight member schools, which help run the store. These include: Central Christian school, Covenant Christian school, Kirk Day school, Heritage Classical Christian academy, Promise Christian academy, south City Community school, twin Oaks Christian school and Westminster Christian academy.

Ditto Family Resale, 10027 Manchester Road, St. Louis, 314-394-2026, dittostl.com

Past “Our member school leaders were looking for an alternative revenue source to fund scholarships and help offset rising tuition costs,” explains Ana Woodard, who also served as a member of the original steering committee. “They heard about a few other Christian schools around the country doing a resale shop and thought, let’s give this a try! And here we are, in our seventh year, continuing to help these schools provide financial assistance to families who could otherwise not afford a Christian education.”

Plus, they’re happy to know that our profits go directly to schools. Not only [does that money go] to the eight schools we support, but each year a portion also goes to a school within the community as part of our pledge to give back.”

its inception, Ditto has distributed almost $625,000 to its member schools, with this year’s annual distribution being the highest to date. “Thanks to the generous donations we receive and the patronage of our amazing customers, this year’s profits enabled us to distribute $33,000 to each of our eight member schools,” she adds. “And once our expansion is complete, we believe this amount will

grow quite significantly.”

Design

ELEMENTS

CLEAR AND COHESIVE

By Robyn Dexter

C

ori Dyer of Cure Design Group was sitting poolside with one of her close friends when the topic of redoing her friend’s kitchen and dining area came up. After adding an addition from the first floor to the master bedroom of her St. Louis Hills home 15 years ago, the friend wanted to freshen the kitchen space as well. “The colors, granite and design were all dated,” Dyer says. “I said, ‘If you’re serious, let’s come up with a design.’” Dyer drew up two layout ideas for the area, which was divided into three spaces. She proposed opening it up, making it feel more like one space instead of three. Initially, Dyer’s friend wanted to keep the existing footprint, but seeing the advantages of opening up the space led her to decide on a more spaciousfeeling floor plan. For the back area, which had a step down into the family room, Dyer and her client chose floor-to-ceiling cabinets with a bar area to create more usable space. The client’s father had recently passed away, and Dyer was able to incorporate some old photos of his into the bar area. She also was able to use the client’s mother’s dining room table and chairs. “This project was about making everything usable for her,” Dyer says. “We made the spaces connect to each other for a more cohesive feel.”

LocaL experts give insight to creating stunning outdoor firepLaces that wiLL make your backyard a bLissfuL retreat for years to come. fireplace can transform a space with its warmth and beauty. However, when built under the stars, a fireplace can transform an ordinary outdoor space into a serene retreat for friends and family alike to enjoy. John Brown, general manager of Deck & Patio Living, prides himself on helping clients build one-of-a-kind outdoor fireplaces. “We truly try to get people to influence and figure out what they like because that’s what makes it where, five years from now, when you go outside to have coffee or you’re out there at night and when you look at it, you smile because you think, ‘That’s mine, no one else has that,’” Brown says. “You can’t look across the street to see your neighbor has the exact same one.” Brown says figuring out a client’s vision for the aesthetic of the fireplace is usually the first item on the agenda, and for that, he always recommends clients turn to Pinterest for inspiration. “The invention of Pinterest has helped my industry and me personally, amazingly,” he says. “That way, I’ll have a pretty good idea of what you like and don’t like. From there, we start putting it into the computer, editing it and showing you what it looks like.” Some customers, though, aren’t necessarily into the design component of the process. “They say, ‘You’re the expert, design it, show me two or three different options, and I’ll pick the one I like best,” Brown says. “And that’s fine, too.” After a client shares his or her vision with Brown, he and his team check local codes and conduct an on-site visit to measure the grade of the yard, take pictures and get an overall assessment of the space. “I try to look around to see if [he or she] has an existing design going on,” Brown says. “I try to see what elements I can take from the existing [space] and try to tie into the new just to get as much continuity as we can so it doesn’t look quilt-worked

together. You want it to look like it was designed all at one time.” From there, measurements from the on-site visit are put into 3D software, along with the complete design, so clients can see what their finished fireplace will look like. If approved, construction will begin shortly after, depending on the season. Richard Poynter, president of Poynter Landscape Architecture, agrees with Brown but says adding an outdoor fireplace is usually just one of many elements clients seek in their outdoor spaces. “Sometimes they have a list of seven or eight different components that they want in there or that they think they want in there,” Poynter says. “Fire might be high on their list, or it might be a major component of it, and they are trying to figure out what [is] the best way to incorporate that.” Poynter says the first item on his company’s agenda is to conduct an on-site meeting with the client, similar to Brown’s process.

“When we’re designing an outdoor living space in general, we want to get an understanding of the family size [and] how [people] flow [in the yard] so that we can better design an outdoor space,” Poynter says. “You want to build things that have good, long-term value for people. Outdoor spaces are hard to modify and change once they’re built since so much of it is hardscaped, so incorporating things that they want based on their family size and home size that will have long-term redeeming value for the client, as well when they go to sell their home, is something we would generally advise on.” After the on-site visit, clients are interviewed about the components they hope to implement into their space. “Sometimes there is a longer-term goal – whether it’s a pool or a pavilion or tennis court or whatever it might be that isn’t in today’s plans – but they think is in their future,” Poynter says. “They want to see this broad picture of how their whole backyard would look, go together and then determine what the most important pieces are, and how we build those in a phase or two.” The on-site visit also allows Poynter and his team to see what clients dub

problem spots in their spaces. “Sometimes a problem with the property turns out to be the opportunity,” he says. “For instance, a property that might have a slope of some significance may make it hard to envision how this place is going to work out to have an outdoor seating area and a fireplace. That turns out to be the solution, in that you know the retaining wall is a seat wall and sort of makes everything cozy. A lot of times people see a problem in their yard, and our job is to figure out how to turn that problem into an asset.” Whether you are in the market for a modest outdoor fireplace or are hoping to add one as part of a large-scale project, these local experts can assist in bringing euphoria to your outdoor utopia. GROOMING & GLAMOUR

Marvelous Masks

By Alecia Humphreys

‌M

asks aren’t only for Halloween. In fact, at-home masks have taken the world by storm, allowing ladies an easy way to show self-love, relax and, of course, better their skin in the process. However, a mask can be as unique as the wearer, with each one combatting a different problem area. Whether you are in need of something for sensitive skin, something to shrink pesky pores or something to truly illuminate your skin, there is a mask to work its magic.

4

1. OLEHENRIKSEN’s Cold Plunge Pore Mask is perfect for combatting pesky pores. Simply apply an even layer onto a clean, dry face, allowing it to rest for approximately 15 minutes. Made with alpine willow herb and snow lotus – antioxidant-rich botanicals that thrive in extreme cold – this cooling clay mask detoxifies, helps control oil and reduces the appearance of pores. Add cool water and the turquoise mask thaws into a luxurious lather sure to rid your face of excess oil and impurities. Available from Sephora for $36. (sephora.com)

3. Unearth radiant skin with Elemis’ Peptide4 Thousand Flower Mask to revitalize skin, while also reducing pores. Containing ingredients like Nordic Peat, which is rich in humic and fulvic acids, Brazilian Black Clay and Willow Complex (composed of the buds of white and violet willows and the black willow bark), it’s safe to say this mask is rich in minerals. Apply to both the face and neck for 15 minutes, removing with warm water and a dark cloth. Not only will dull skin be revitalized, but also your skin will be gently exfoliated of dead skin cells for an even skin tone and texture. Available from Ulta Beauty for $45. (ulta.com) 4. Need a little balance? Algenist’s ALIVE Prebiotic Balancing Mask will do the trick! Formulated with a prebiotic from algae and a probiotic designed to target unbalanced surface skin bacteria, this mask, upon application, transforms from mint green to pink, leaving skin feeling alive and hydrated. Apply to a clean, dry face, gently massaging in a circular motion until the color change occurs, leaving on for three to five minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water, and wave those fine lines and wrinkles goodbye. Available from Algenist for $38. (algenist.com)

2. Glo Skin Beauty’s Soothing Gel Mask is the perfect partner for individuals with sensitive or post-procedure skin. Free of fragrance and dyes, this gentle formula – containing two cucumber extracts and soothing botanicals – will soothe, hydrate and tone skin while reducing the appearance of puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. Simply apply an even layer after cleansing and toning skin, leaving on for 10 minutes. Remove with a soft, damp cloth, and voilà! Available from Glo Skin Beauty for $40. (gloskinbeauty.com)

llen Pendry had always been creative, but she never envisioned becoming a boutique owner. Pendry had been teaching high school art for a few years before learning she was pregnant. Although a St. Louis native, she and her husband were living in Chicago, looking to return south. When he got a job and they moved back to St. Louis, Pendry was 34 weeks pregnant and knew trying to find a job at that point wouldn’t be logical with the baby’s impending arrival. After their baby, Corinne, arrived in July 2015, Pendry found it difficult to be a stay-at-home mom with no creative outlet. “I didn’t have a background in sewing or anything, but I just kind of went out on a limb,” Pendry says. “I wanted to make Corinne’s baptismal gown out of my wedding dress.” She enlisted her mom (“who had made a thing or two for Halloween”) to help Pendry cut up her beloved wedding gown and was pleased with the results. “After that, I realized how fun it was and wanted to make baby clothes to sell on Etsy,” she says. And thus, Blue Mark Handmade was born. Pendry named the company after her very first sewing machine: a powder-blue Mark II from her grandmother. The name, to Pendry, contains the perfect amount of sentiment and professionalism. Pendry, frustrated by the kids clothing market and its incessant sparkles and glitter, set out to craft a line that was more classic and sophisticated. “I want my kids to wear kid versions of what I would wear,” she says. “That’s how I pick my fabrics.” Comfort and fit were also key to Pendry’s initial Ellen Pendry | Photo by Sarah Conroy efforts. As Corinne grew and after her brother, Wilson, arrived last October, the children’s mother realized the need for clothing that could be worn both to church and for play. Pendry wanted practical options – not something she’d spend too much money on only for her child to wear once. She works with knit organic fabrics in solid colors and florals, creating pieces like rompers, skirts, dresses and more. “As far as pieces go, I will not sell anything I wouldn’t put on my own kid,” Pendry says. “These are pieces kids are comfortable being kids in.” Some of her most popular items include twirl dresses (which Pendry says 3-year-old Corinne is obsessed with) along with peplums. All of her pieces are sold through her website and Etsy, where she has more than 200 five-star reviews.

“I’ve been humbled to hear such good things since starting Blue Mark,” Pendry says. “I hear from people that my clothing items are some of the best-quality handmade pieces they have.” Since its inception in October 2016, Blue Mark Handmade has grown to fit each season. Right now, Pendry’s gearing up for her fall line, solely available on her website, which she’s excited to promote. “I have the best fall colors,” she says. “I’m all about olive green, burgundy and warm, rich colors.” She’ll be operating a bit differently this fall, though. Halfway through this summer, Pendry made the decision to switch from the made-to-order basis she was creating items from, to ready-toship pieces. She decided to make the switch to be able to stock up on pieces when she has time and focus on caring for her 3-year-old and 10-month-old. Pendry moderates a VIP Facebook group for Blue Mark and has been receiving excited comments about her upcoming items. She says she’s been met with enthusiasm about the fall line’s bubble rompers with long sleeves – perfect for transitioning into autumn months. As for the future, Pendry is looking to get her products into more stores and pursue wholesale endeavors. Blue Mark items aren’t currently available anywhere but online, but Pendry would love to be able to bring her pieces to local shops. “It makes me feel good that I’m sending out good-quality clothes and that kids want to wear it because it’s comfy,” she says. Crispy Rice Bowls with Pickled Red Onion and Yogurt Sauce

T

Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott

his recipe was inspired by tahdig, a Persian rice dish with a golden crust and beautiful balance of textures. I wanted to develop a quicker, abbreviated version of the rice and add some new elements for more depth of flavor and freshness. The result includes lentils braised with golden raisins for a little sweetness and yogurt sauce with a hint of spice from horseradish. This crispy rice bowl is easy to assemble and can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner – I especially love it in the morning with a poached or sunny side up egg on the top.

Amanda Elliott is the chef at Peachtree Catering (peachtreebanquet.com) in Columbia, Missouri, and authors the website Rustic Supper (rusticsupper.com), where she shares recipes centered on the idea of the communal table and embracing the heritage of food through travel. She also hosts a series of pop-up dinners in Columbia called Sunday Suppers.

N

elson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” In that light, the tax-exempt, nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness (SLOCA) has a mission to educate women about early warning signs of this deadly disease both during September, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, and the remainder of the year – because early detection can mean power over the No. 1 cause of gynecological cancer deaths. According to the New York City-headquartered Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance (OCRFA) – the largest global organization dedicated to fighting the disease – that form of cancer is a growth of malignant cells that begins in the ovaries, the fallopian tubes or the peritoneum. “Approximately 22,000 women [in the United States] will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018 – more than 200 in the St. Louis area alone – and about 14,000 women will die from ovarian cancer this year,” says Susan Robben, ovarian cancer survivor and executive director of SLOCA, in a press release. “SLOCA works to share the signs and symptoms so that ovarian cancer can be caught in the earlier stages.” According to Robben, only about 20 percent of ovarian cancer cases are caught in the early stages, the first and second, when survival rates are high. Instead, a majority are discovered at Stage 3 or 4, when

circumstances have grown potentially much more dire. “This is because there is no diagnostic test, and the symptoms can be vague,” Robben says of earlystage discovery. Those symptoms can include bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary symptoms, whether via urgency or frequency. Secondary symptoms may include fatigue, indigestion, back pain, pain with intercourse, constipation, menstrual irregularities and unexplained weight loss or gain. According to SLOCA,

if a woman experiences any of these symptoms as a change on a daily or almost daily basis consistently for two weeks or more, she should see a gynecologist. “It is crucial that we get the word out to save the lives of women throughout the St. Louis community,” Robben says. “That is why the events and activities surrounding Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month are so important for the women in our area.” Upcoming events on behalf of SLOCA include:  Sun., Sept. 23: Hosted at the J Community Center in Creve Coeur, Ovarian Cancer: Survive & Shine Course is a free event for ovarian cancer survivors and caregivers, and includes breakfast and lunch. Breakout sessions include topics about genetics, diet, nutrition, managing side effects, stress and more. Plus, lunch attendees will be entertained by actress and comedienne Jonna Tamases with her performance of Jonna’s Body: Please Hold, which is described as “an emotionally riveting yet comical look at Jonna’s own cancer journey.” 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Preregistration required at sloca.org/shine.  Sun., Oct. 14: The 12th annual Families Run for Ovarian Cancer, also known as FamiliesROC, is a 5K and 1-mile run/walk in downtown St. Louis. The School of Rock House Band, the Bubble Bus, the Photo Bus photo booth and more will also be on-site for entertainment. Registration starts at 7 a.m. at Soldiers Memorial. sloca.org/familiesroc. orget the traditional office water cooler. Professionals who work at Covo, the metro area’s newest co-working space, can gather around the bar. Craft cocktails are served daily at the first-floor Trust Cocktail Bar, just one of the many amenities found within the former Mississippi Valley Trust Co. bank at 401 Pine St. in downtown St. Louis. Rebecca Pan is CEO of Covo, which opened its St. Louis location in February, a year and a half after opening its San Francisco headquarters. “We chose St. Louis after searching nationwide,” Pan says. “We felt that St. Louis’ thriving startup scene, high number of female-owned businesses, good real estate value and strong appreciation for good food, cocktails and coffee made St. Louis exactly what we were looking for.” The concept behind Covo is co-working, a collaborative, community-centered work environment for sole proprietors, entrepreneurs and other professionals who lack a desk in a company office space. With 46 private offices, 18 dedicated desks in shared spaces and 50 open seating spots at tables and in comfortable furniture groupings, Covo can accommodate as many as 250 members. “We just topped 100 members, including GlobalHack, Lyft and Volley, so we have a terrific community and room to grow,” Pan says. Individuals can choose from four different monthly membership plans that offer 24/7 access to the building and associated amenities. The most inexpensive plan provides unlimited drop-in use of a shared lounge for $75. For $150 per month, members enjoy open seating throughout the facility 24/7. A $250 monthly membership guarantees a dedicated desk, locking cabinet and nameplate. The most popular plan

features a private office with a filing cabinet and signage for $350. The facility also allows access to shared co-working spaces for $2 per hour or $16 for a full day’s use of the facility and free parking in the Mansion House Garage, located at 330 N. Fourth St. Members pay from $3 for two hours of parking, $6 for 10 hours, up to $95 for a monthly pass. There are nine meeting rooms available for members’ use. Nonmembers can rent the meeting rooms at rates that vary from $35 per hour to $300 for a full day. And all memberships include internet access and printing, unlimited coffee and tea, and soundproof phone rooms, providing a ventilated yet quiet space to have cellphone conversations. For those who don’t need a desktop or tabletop in Covo, virtual membership, starting at $45 per month, digitizes the Covo experience with online mail processing, a virtual assistant and access to Covo’s address and phone number for business use. Pan adds that on-site members “get to use our address as their official office address, and we receive and deliver mail and packages. Additional add-ons include mail scanning, a virtual assistant and phone number.” Although the emphasis is on business, members do more than just work. Covo’s amenities extend to “life enhancements,” such as a secure bicycle storage room, member storage, a cozy nap room accommodating up to three nappers in comfort, happy hour and member events. The facility is also pet-friendly and features healthy vending options in addition to the custom cocktails available at Trust, which is also open to the public from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. “One special perk of membership, though, is that Covo members get a complimentary craft cocktail every Wednesday,” Pan says. Pan works with seven additional Covo staffers and says the space attracts a diverse membership. Small businesses owned by minorities, women and LGBTQ individuals share space with consultants, freelancers and “folks doing amazing things in the city and in the world,” she says. At Covo, Pan says, “the playing field is level,” adding, “Here we have incredible and authentic diversity. All colors, ages, origins and accents are welcome with open arms. Covo is a modern family business, and we believe strongly that our members and team are extensions of that family.” Covo St. Louis, 401 Pine St., St. Louis, 314-455-6313, stl.hellocovo.com

M

ore than four decades ago, the Love and Schiffer families decided to take their combined experience in hotel management, real estate and banking, and apply it to senior living care – first as investors, then as developers and managers. The result was Allegro Senior Living, a St. Louis-based company that now boasts 20 senior living communities across Florida and other parts of the Southeast. Allegro Senior Living will finally introduce its signature brand of expert, luxury care to St. Louis with the opening of its newest location in November. Located in Richmond Heights, and close to the bustling Clayton, Central West End and downtown areas, this brand-new community will offer both assisted living and memory care within an upscale yet welcoming atmosphere. “We’ve found that seniors want to feel more independent, which is why the community has such a hotel-like feel,” says executive director Angela Sweet. Although the first three floors will be devoted to assisted living care, residents walking into the complex will feel as if they’ve entered into a chic hotel lobby, complete with a concierge and a babbling water fountain. Residents can choose between studio and one-bedroom apartments outfitted with spacious bathrooms and walk-in closets. Each condo-style unit will also feature a kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, plus granite countertops and accents. Although residents can certainly eat in, the community’s

56

dining – and beverage – programs may prove too tempting to resist. The relaxed and casual bistro will offer all-day dining, meaning that residents can grab a sandwich, salad or snack whenever hunger strikes. Perhaps only a cocktail will do? With a full-service bar, the bistro can satisfy those cravings, as well. “All-day dining, not to mention a full-service bar, are pretty unusual in senior living communities,” shares Sweet. “It’s just another example of how Allegro Senior Living promotes independence.” In addition to the bistro, the more formal dining room will also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. An in-house medical director, as well as physical and occupational therapy services, will cater to residents’ health and well-being. For community members looking for new ways to stay active or unwind, there will be a fitness center, a spa and a stadium theater, which will show movies and stream Sunday religious services. The community’s fourth floor will exclusively serve seniors living with dementia, and feature its own dining room, salon and rooftop patio. “On this floor, everything has a reason,” emphasizes Sweet. “We just want to be there for residents and to make their lives meaningful.” The heart of Allegro Senior Living’s memory care is its innovative Ensemble Program, which promotes residents’ peace of mind and emotional security through sensory engagement and familiar routines. A hallmark of the program is its use of virtual technology – specifically,

an interactive 70-inch screen television – to engage the senses. Residents will be able to “attend” mass at the Vatican or “play” the piano with the simple flick of a wand. A 20-year veteran of senior living care, Sweet hopes that prospective residents will stop by the visitor center, take a virtual tour and speak with her about the many appealing amenities, programs and choices available. “The knowledge and expertise of the people that work for Allegro Senior Living are extraordinary,” she stresses. “The people make this community.” Allegro Senior Living, 1055 Bellevue Ave., Richmond Heights, (314) 332-8372, allegroliving.com

latbread lovers, take note! Peel Wood Fired Pizza – the Illinois-based eatery that debuted in Edwardsville in 2009, followed by an O’Fallon, Illinois, restaurant/brewery in 2014 – opened a third location in Clayton in July. “We’ve been scouting areas in the St. Louis market for a couple years,” says chef Patrick Thirion, who co-owns Peel with Brandon Case. “I fell in love with this nice central location. We felt like our brand fit here.” According to Thirion, Peel’s new home fills approximately 8,800 square feet on the base level of a new 26-story apartment building. The dining area seats around 245 guests, with another 50 seats on an outdoor patio. Maplewood’s Gray Design Group

worked on executing the design, which features a warm, welcoming atmosphere with modern touches to accompany an elaborate menu. “I’m a cook first and an owner second,” Thirion says. “I’m just here to make great food – that’s my goal. Obviously, wood-fired pizza is our main menu focus, but we’re wood-firing everything from wings to paellas at this location.” Peel features Italian wood-burning ovens that cook at an average temperature of 800 to 850 degrees. Popular pizza picks include maple bourbon pork with applewood-smoked bacon, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, Roma tomatoes and a maple-bourbon glaze; woodfired chicken with house Buffalo sauce, mozzarella,

Gorgonzola, ranch and celery; and Creole shrimp with Creole Parmesan cream, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, mozzarella and Parmesan. From the shared plates section, guests can choose from items such as Prince Edward Island mussels steamed in Peel Brewing Co. Belgian Strong Ale with garlic, shallots and fresh herbs, served with a house-made baguette. Another highlight is the shoyu ribs, featuring house-smoked crispy St. Louis-style ribs tossed in a sweet-and-spicy soy glaze with Asian napa cabbage slaw. An extensive selection of salads includes options such as a shaved fennel salad with crispy shaved fennel, spring mix, red onion, roasted plum, Asian pear, grilled pear and ginger vinaigrette, garnished with fried sweet

potato. Paella options include bulgar wheat paella with merguez (a spicy sausage original to North Africa) and a seafood paella with lobster tail, PEI mussels, gulf shrimp, Calasparra rice, the aromatic sauce sofrito and salmon shellfish broth. All of Peel’s offerings sound like thoroughly appealing options before catching Crowns from The Black Rep. From the bar, guests can choose from 36 draft beers, including 10 of Peel’s own brews, such as Blood Orange Wheat, Belgian Strong Ale and Perception IPA.

Peel Wood Fired Pizza, 208 S. Meramec Ave., Clayton,

‌Story:  Yolanda, a teen full of energy and enthusiasm, is following a somewhat troubled path in her life in Brooklyn, where she lives with her mother and siblings. After her brother’s shooting death, though, Yolanda’s life changes dramatically – when her mother sends her south to live with her grandmother, Mother Shaw. While struggling to fit in with the kids in her new school, who view her sarcastically as an “outsider,” Yolanda gradually becomes indoctrinated into a slower, gentler way of life lived by the ladies of the church attended by Mother Shaw. There she learns the history behind the custom of the women who wear all manner of hats to Sunday service. Yolanda discovers those hats offer a direct link to her African heritage, from ancestry in Africa through slavery in the Old South and the fight for civil rights in the 20th century and beyond. Those various head coverings also epitomize the personalities of the ladies and their own unique histories, from the precious few owned by the poor to the hundreds of hats housed in the personal collections of the middle class. Whether dressed for a morning service, a baptism, a wedding or a funeral, these ladies wear their “crowns” on their visits with the “king” (Jesus) with their “hattitude” of distinction. Highlights:  The Black Rep opens its 42nd season with an invigorating presentation of Regina Taylor’s paean to the history behind the lavish hats worn by African-American women of the South and elsewhere. Other Info:  The idea for Crowns, according to an NPR story, began in 1998, when a North Carolina photographer took a series of photos of women in their hats. He and a writer colleague became especially interested in the flamboyant chapeaus worn by African-American women to church. Eventually, director and playwright Regina Taylor wrote a play about the subject titled Crowns, which became an off-Broadway production circa 2002. Crowns features a cast of six women and one man. Although Yolanda’s character forms the focus of the show’s plot, the real core role belongs to that of Mother Shaw, one of five women who regale Yolanda (and the audience) with their predilections for head attire, as well as reminiscences of their mothers and grandmothers before them. Director Linda Kennedy brings forth a joyous expression of these characters from her accomplished cast, backed energetically by musical director Charles Creath at the keyboard and his colleague, percussionist Matthew Clark, who offer a mix of gospel, jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and spirited dance pieces. Anita Jackson anchors the cast with a winning performance as the no-nonsense Mother Shaw, who makes a grand presence onstage as she belts out

numbers with her powerful voice, including “When the Saints (Come Marching In),” “None but the Righteous” and others. Amber Rose as mortician Velma shows fine comic timing, as well as a lively vocal interpretation of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “When I’ve Done the Best I Can.” Maureen L. (Hughes) Williams mines the show’s humor with an amusing portrayal of teacher Wanda, who cuts quite a fine rug when the spirit moves her. Eleanor Humphrey uses her “model” looks to accentuate Jeanette’s descriptions of how to flirt with a man by using proper placement of a hat on an attractive head. As Yolanda, Tyler White introduces the spirited musical with a rousing rap number titled “Where I Belong,” then slowly joins in the ladies’ merriment. As the “Man,” Myke Andrews sparkles in several supporting roles, including a preacher, an itinerant laborer, a loving father, Mother Shaw’s beloved late husband and more, as well as showing off his considerable dancing skills. Several foot-tapping, finger-snapping ensemble pieces keep Crowns moving at an enjoyable clip under Kirven Douthit-Boyd’s enchanting choreography, while on costumes, Daryl Harris’ festive hats not only complement but also highlight the splendid outfits worn by the players. Crowns succeeds in providing engaging musical and comic entertainment, as well as an informative explanation of the historical meaning and value given to the hats worn by women in church, one of the few places they were afforded freedom to express themselves for too much of earlier American history. Celebrating

Ateliers By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photo by Sarah Conroy

A freewheeling artist’s studio program here turns 10 this year – with a commemorative celebration.

A

mix of the mundane and the magical, the artist’s studio earns a special spotlight in an exhibition now on display from the Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design. The exhibition, which opened Aug. 24, celebrates the first decennial of the center’s Artist-in-Residence Program. It features the works of more than three dozen artists and runs till Oct. 21 at the center’s Delmar Boulevard location. The 10th-anniversary celebration involves all three residencies at the center: the Community Artist Residency, the Craft Alliance and TechShop Residency, and the Craft Alliance Studio Artist Residency. The first residency involves an artist “passionate about developing and fostering community through art” by working with local students “to develop, execute and install a collaborative student-authored permanent public artwork,” according to the center’s website; the second supports an emerging or midcareer artist with a strong didactic component in diverse facilities; and the third also targets an emerging or midcareer artist wishing to develop his or her work in a spacious, collaborative, community-based facility. “The exhibition includes almost everyone from the past 10 years,” says Stefanie Kirkland, who directs exhibitions and the Artist-in-Residence Program (generally recognized as a program created to invite artists, academicians and curators to reside within the premises of an institution). “While different ‘concentrations’ have evolved over the years, all artists operate within this one program. The designations [mentioned] are recent in their division and nomenclature, but all artists work more generally within the same program.” Kirkland continues by dwelling a bit more on the program’s three residencies. “The division is a new development for us,” she says. “Depending on the year, the popularity of specific concentrations fluctuates, but generally they are all equally popular and attract a number of high-caliber applicants.” Kirkland also succinctly describes what the program’s nationwide competitive selection process involves: “Professionals from the craft and art community from throughout the art world sit down to review applications, which include a portfolio, letter of intent, references and résumés. Not only do we want to see high-quality work, but we also want to help artists improve their work and foster a renewed engagement with the community.” From a geographic perspective, she adds, the program has welcomed a variegated contingent of creators over time. “Some artists have come all the way from California and Connecticut,” Kirkland says, “but about half are from the immediate region.” The exhibition reflects such diversity. “We have everything from functional pottery to sculptural work, theatrical pieces, jewelry and work that makes use of lighted elements,” Kirkland says. “It’s an eclectic exhibition that reveals the breadth of the artists who have been involved with the program.” Although she diplomatically declines to cite specific examples of works involved in the exhibition that most impress her personally, Kirkland does sketch a few details about a trio of them. “No favorites – everyone brings with them a unique voice,” she says. “Some are, however, unexpected. Abby Lowe has converted an antique trunk into a stage and interactive diorama or exploratorium of the story of Ophelia [from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet]. Will Rimel, who is interested in fine art toys and collectables, has created a ceramic toy whose arms move. Jessica Anderson electroforms plastic bags to create sculptural jewelry that looks at how we choose to adorn our body and use materials.” In that regard, backtracking from Delmar Boulevard to Grand Boulevard – the site of the actual studios – the electric eclecticism of the exhibition certainly seems to reflect the atmosphere of those studios, at least as Kirkland explains it. “Each artist receives [his or her] own private studio, but the studios all open up to the community studios at our Grand location,” she says. “They have amazing access to complete ceramics, metalsmithing, 3D printing, woodturning and fiber studios. “As to the general vibe – I think it’s busy, creative but also relaxing. Everyone is there to follow their passion and make work.” Finally, specifically, Kirkland dwells on the artists currently in residence, who, like prior resident artists, have come to the center at variable starting dates throughout a given year for terms ranging from three to nine months. “Interestingly, all are clay-focused right now,” she says. “They all help each other with critiques and foster a supporting environment. Two of them are very engaged in community projects – Sajeda Issa has been working with the kids at the [St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center], and Malaika Tolford, our current community artist, has been teaching at [St. Louis’] Roosevelt High School. “Lindsay Pichaske is one of the more-established artists we’ve had in a while – she was just at [Helena, Montana’s] Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. She just started her residency on July 1, and we’re excited to see what she gets up to.” Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, 6640 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, 314-725-1177; 501 N.
