Abuzzyeventrecentlyreturnedtothe publicgreenwaysinSt Louis.
GreatRiversGreenwayteamedup withtheCityMuseumforitssecond annual“GreenwayQuest”scavengerhunt.This year,searchersofallagescantrackdownrocks–hand-paintedtolooklikebees–thatarehidden along135milesofgreenwaysaroundSt.Louis. Theeventservesasafun,educationalwayfor peopletogetoutinnatureandobservewildlife alongtheway.
“Thisyear,we’refocusingonbeesbecause St.Louisishometooneofthemostdiverse populationsofbeesinthecountry,”saysGreat RiversGreenwaycommunicationsmanager DallasAdams.“Wehavemorethan80different kindsofbees Wewantpeopletoknowthese populationsareonthedecline.”
GreenwayQuestkickedoffinAugustand runsuntilall250-plusrockshavebeenfound andloggedontheGreenwayQuestwebsite. In2023,theteamsatGRG–thepublicagency connectingtheSt Louisregionwithgreenways –andtheCityMuseumdecidedtofocusonthe vitalrolebeesplaynotjustaroundtheworld, butalsorighthereinourownbackyards.
TheSt.Louisecosystemreliesonbees topollinateplantlifeandnaturalhabitats, particularlythosefoundthroughoutthe greenwaysystemsintheregion.Beesare responsibleforpollinating80percentof floweringplantsandyetfacerisksduetoclimate change,disease,invasivespeciesandmore. ProgramminglikeGreenwayQuesthelpsraise awarenessaboutthesechallenges,including what’satriskandhowlocalscanhelpkeepbee populationshealthy.

ByConnieMitchellYoumaybesurprisedtolearnthat thesingleleadingcauseofdisability worldwideislowerbackpain, accordingtotheWorldHealth Organization.Ifyouhaveoccasionalorpersistent lowbackpain,you’recertainlynotalone. Fortunately,therearesomethingsyoucandoto helppreventandrelievethiscommonproblem.
Whilecausescanincludearthritis, inflammation,infectionoreventumors,the vastmajorityoflowerbackpainismechanical ratherthanduetoamajorstructuralproblemor disease,saysChrisPeterson,aphysicaltherapist withWashingtonUniversityPhysicalTherapy. Thecommonmechanicalaspectoflowbackpain meansthatmovementisbothpartoftheproblem andsolution.
“Thelumbarspineisnaturallyveryresilient andisnotofteninjuredbyasingleinjuryor movement,butrepeatedsmallmovements areoftenachronicsourceofirritationand inflammation,”hesays.“Manylifestylehabits alsocontributetopain.Lackofsleep,blood sugarfluctuations,lackofcardiovascular
fitness,tobaccouseandnutritionareintegral todeterminingthebody’sabilitytorespond. Geneticsalsocanplayaroleinstructural variationsandinthebody’sresponsetoinjury. Becausetherearesomanyfactors,thereisrarely asinglemagicbullettoaddressthepain.”
However,Petersonnotesthatthesevariables oftenmeanthatphysicaltherapistshavemultiple avenuesavailablefortreatment–andmovement isatthetopofthelist.Headvisesthatpeople withbackpaincontinuetolerableactivitytohelp preventasinglepainepisodefrombecoming chronicallydebilitating.
Painthatdisruptssleepformorethanfive daysorpersistswhileawakeformorethana monthshouldbeassessedbyaphysicianand addressedwithphysicaltherapy,ifappropriate. Bydiscoveringwhattypesofmaladaptive movementscontributetoanindividual’spain, physicaltherapistshelppatientsunlearnpoor posturehabitsandminimizerepeatedstress ontheback.Stretchesandexercisesmaybe recommendedtohelprelievepainandhelp preventrepeatedepisodes.
Inparticular,tasksdoneforlongperiodsof time,suchassitting,sleepingorexercising,may
needtobeadjusted.Forexample,“minimizing twistingwhilegettinginandoutofbedfora personwhotwiststooeasily,”Petersonsays. “Themoreoftenataskisdonewithouttwisting, themoreefficientitbecomesandcarriesover tootheractivities.Itisalsohelpfultoaddress deficienciesinthebaselevelofstrength, flexibilityandcardiovascularfitness.”
Mostepisodesofbackpainspontaneously resolvewithinsixmonths,butupto30percent ofpeopledevelopchronicpain,whichisharder totreat,hesays.“Thefearofactivityitself isthoughttobeariskfactorindeveloping persistentpain,sowearecautiousofbeing overlyprotective.”Heconsidersacutelowerback painnotjustawarningoffutureepisodesbut alsoaharbingerofoverallhealth.

Similarly,Románsaysthatauthenticityand celebrationaretwoofhismainobjectivesfor “Identity.”GrowingupinPuertoRico,hisfirst experienceperformingonstagewasduringtalent showcompetitionswithhiscommunity.Forthepast twoyears,Románhasexperimentedwiththemesof surrealism,absurdityandmixingfantasyandreality inhischoreography,likeinhis recentlychoreographedpiece, “Papagayos,”whichtoldthe storyofatwisted,dystopian gameofmusicalchairs contrastedwithfun,lively Latinomusic.“Whenitcomes toshowcasingmyidentity,it’s neverintentional,”hesays. “Allofmylifeexperiencesare alreadythereandhavean influenceonthepiece,but Idon’tsitdownandsayI’m goingtomakesomethingthat talksaboutoneparticular experiencewithmyfamilyor anaspectofmyculture.”
Althoughhe’sjustinthe conceptualstagesofplanning for“Identity,”hesaysthathe’s

Formostproductions,rehearsalbeginsfourto sixweeksinadvanceastheballerinaslearnand rehearsethematerial,tryoncostumesandtrainfor theperformance.Thefinalweekofrehearsal,known as“theater”or“tech”week,startstheWednesday beforeopeningnight,whentheballerinasspendthree tofourhoursblockingouttheshowontheactual performancestageforthefirsttime,runningthrough formationsandmakingcorrections.OnThursday,the dancersbeginat10:30a.m.witha75-minutewarm-up beforeheadingintoathreetofour-hourtechrehearsal. Afterabreakfordinner,thedancersheadbackonto thestagefrom7to9p.m.fordressrehearsal,where theyrunthroughtheentireproductionincostume.
Theprocessrepeatsagainthenextdaywhenthe companyrunsthroughanotherdressrehearsalbefore theopeningshowonFridaynight.“Thereissomuch workandsomanypeoplethatcontributetoputting eachproductiononstage,fromtechpeopletocostume peopletothedancersthemselves,”Cornettexplains.
“That’swhyitmeanssomuchforpeopletocomeand showupandsupporttheballet.”
Theweeksoutsideofrehearsalweekcanbeequally
challengingandtime-consuming.LoriWilson,whohas beenadancerintheSaintLouisBalletfor15yearsand whohasnailedtitleroleslikeKitriin“DonQuixote” andAurorain“SleepingBeauty,”sayshermornings beginat6a.m.foraquickwalkwithherdogs,Aryaand Dexter,beforeheadingtothegymat7a.m.Staying strongandphysicallyhealthyiscrucialformost dancers,whichiswhyWilsonenjoysparticipating instrengthtraining,cycling,hotyogaclassesor swimmingtogetherbodymovingbeforetherestofher daybegins.On-season,Wilsonhastobeatthestudio forclassesfrom10:30a.m.tonoon,whichalwaysstarts
atthebarretoslowlywarmupthedancers.“Classes startatthebarrewherewedopliés,tendus,dégagés, ronddejambsandfrappes,”Wilsonsays.“Everything youdoatthebarreisbuildingyouupforcenterwork. Inthecenter,yourepeatalotofthesamethings–you doadagio,whichisslow,controlledmovement,and pirouettes,whichareturns,andthenyoujump.”
Afterclassesarerehearsals,whichstartat12:15 p.m.andgountil4p.m.OnMondayandWednesday nights,Wilsonstaysatthestudioafterrehearsalto teachherownclassesuntil7p.m.,thenheadshome fordinnerandstretching.Althoughatypicaldayin herlifemightseemstrenuousandhectictooutsiders, Wilsonemphasizesthatallthehardworkismorethan worthitwhenthelightsgodownandthemagicbegins onopeningnight.“Ithinkalotofpeoplecometothe balletnotknowingwhattoexpect,andtheyleave findingsomethingtheyabsolutelyloved,”Wilsonsays. “Thestoriesusuallyhavesomethingforeveryone,and we’reonlyabletodowhatwedobecauseofcommunity support.We’rejustsupergratefultoSt.Louis.”

WESTAFRICANINSTRUMENTS
DununDrumFamily: Thedunundrum familysetsthemelodyandrhythmfor djembedrums.Thefamilyismade upofthreedrums:
TheKenkeni:Thesmallest, highest-pitcheddrumthatholds therhythmwithoutchanging.
TheSangban:Themiddledrum with aslightlylowertone.Thisdrum converseswiththedununbaand provides abalancedsound.
TheDununba:Thelargest, lower-soundingdrumwith adeep, resonanttone.Thedununbaplays atthelowestpitchandanswersthe djembesoloist.
DjembeDrum: Themostpopular WestAfricanpercussioninstrument. Knownasthe“healingdrum”orthe “magicdrum,”thetraditionaldjembe issaidtocontainthreespiritsandis carvedfromsolidhardwood.The drumisplayedwithbarehandsand leadsthepercussion.
Shekere: AWestAfricanpercussion instrument,usuallymadeoutofa driedgourdandcoveredwithwoven beadingornetting.
Leadingthedanceclassesarethreefamilymembers whohavebeenperformingtheirentirelives:Sahfi Uwizèyé,age15;JáhjaUwizèyé,age17;andChinaza Uwizèyé,JahfiStudio’sartisticdirector.Sahfi,a professionalAfricandancer,choreographsmanyof theroutinesatthestudio,whicharetaughttogroups of10to30children.Dancingandswayingtothebeat oftraditionalWestAfricandrumrhythms–taughtby Jáhja,thestudio’sleaddjembedrumperformer–Jahfi Studiostudentslearnhowtoexpresstheirauthentic selvesandperformtraditionaldanceswithconfidence. “Weabsolutelylovewhatwedoandthatwe’reableto givethesechildrenaconnectiontotheircultureand theirheritage,righthereintheUnitedStates,”Chinaza Uwizèyésays.“Withdancinganddrumming,we’reable tosharethatculturewitheachother.It’stheabsolute bestthingtobeabletoexpressyourselfintheartsand dancewithyourheart.There’snothingelselikeit.”
Notonlydoesdancinganddrumminghelpthe studentsconnectwiththeirculture,butitalsoteaches theminvaluablemethodsforregulatingstressand managingdifficultemotions.Playingthedrums ordancingtothemusichelpsthechildrenprocess deeperfeelingsofanger,frustrationorsadnessand alsoprovidesasafeoutletforreleasingpent-upenergy inasafeenvironment.Onceamonth,thestudents participatein“roundcircle”discussionswherethey’re abletoconversefreelyaboutschool,homeandfamily withoutjudgment,whichhelpsthemconnectwith theirpeersanddevelopstrongerrelationships.“The childrenreallyprogressandgrowwhenthey’reina spacewheretheycansayanythingandstillbelovedand supported,”ChinazaUwizèyéexplains.“Thedanceand drumactuallyimprovesfocusandconcentrationinthe classroomandreducestheirstressandanxiety.Thenthe gradescomeupandconfidencerisesasaresultofthat.”

“BeingtheprogrammanagerwasadreamIdidn’t knowwaspossibleorneeded,”shesays.“Inthe beginning,Iwasincollegetobecomeamiddleschool choralmusiceducator.Aftercompletingmydegree, IwasaskedtomanagethefullINUNISONProgram inJanuary2018.”AccordingtoByrd,currentchorus memberssaysheremindsthemofthelateDelores Greathouse,formermusiceducatorandINUNISON chorusmanager.“Shewasagreatforceinthechorus andmadesureeveryonedidtheirpartandwasalways professional,”Byrdexplains.“Itrytoemulateher work.Istarteachseasonbysaying,‘It’smyjobtopull greatnessoutofyoubecauseIexpectyoutobringit outofme.’Idon’taskanythingof[thechorus]that willingtodomyself.”

Mohlerbegantheserieswhileworkingonher seniorexhibitionatWebsterUniversity,forwhichshe paintedthreescenesbasedonwindowsshepassed whilewalkingaroundherneighborhood.Thenarrative theyweaveismadebyomission,Mohlerexplains:“I likedtellingastorywithoutmuchtosee.Yougetone lookintosomeone’slifeandhavetofiguretherestout foryourself.”
Subsequentpaintings,however,bringtheneighbors themselvesintoview:“Windowno.4”featuresafigure gazinguponawallfullofframedphotosinawarm, incandescentlight.Themoodin“Greenlight”isthe opposite–along-hairedfiguredancesattheforefront asacouplekissesamidthedinofaparty,allglowingin theeponymousgreenlight.
EvenafterMohlergraduatedfromWebster UniversitywithaBFAinpaintingandventuredinto printmakingasherprimarymedium,windowsandthe
scenesseenthroughthemhaveremainedhersubject ofchoice.
“I’mthinkingmoreaboutstudyingprintmaking ingradschool,”Mohlersays.“IfeelguiltybecauseIdo lovepainting.ButIthinkprintmakingismoreexciting tomebecauseitinvolvessomanydifferentprocesses. There’sstillsomuchformetolearn.”
Theseprocessesusuallyincludedrawingthedesign andcarvingitintothewoodblock(orotherwise transferringittoaplanemadeofstone,metalor anothermedium)beforeinkisappliedandtheprinting itselfisdone.Aftertakingalithographyworkshop, Mohlersaysshe’scontinuedtolearntechniquesfrom friendsshemadeinartschoolastheyembarkon projectsoftheirown.Thiscollaborativedynamicispart ofwhatmakestheSt.Louisartscommunitysorobust, Mohlercontends.
“Maybewedon’thaveallthegalleriesofa bigskyscrapercity,butit’sasmaller,kindofDIY communitywhere,ifthereisn’tnecessarilyaspacefor youngeremergingartiststosharetheirwork,someone willmakethatspace,”shesays.“Evenbeingyoungand outofschool,Idon’tfinditscary.Artistssupporteach otherandmakesurethateveryoneisseenandhasthe opportunitytogrow.”

Mohlermeansitwhenshesaysshe’sexploringdifferentwaystoapproachthe printmakingprocess.Somemethodseveninvolveheavymachinery.
HostedattheSt.CharlesFoundryArtCentrewithhelpfromlocalprintmaking studioGrafikHouse,Mohlermadeherbiggestprintyet –3by4feetinsize –using asteamroller.Theprocesswas,atpoints,arduous.Mohleremployedthehelpof somefriendstostarttheworkofcarvingawaylargersectionsofthewoodblock, andtheunconventionalnatureoftheprintmakingitselfmeantMohlerwasunable todo adryrunandmakeproofsathome.Thedayoftheprintingwas ahotone (evenbeforegettingsteaminvolved),butthe resultswereworthit.
Theprint representsMohler’s firsttimedoing acarvedprintratherthananoil paintingfortheWindowSeries.Theprintincludeswindowsintheconventional sense –ahouselitupatnight –butalsothewindowof acellphonedisplaying textmessagesand aselfietakenintheframeof arearviewmirror.Thepictures withintheprintdefy alinearnarrative;theboxesarestaggered,andtheimagesare flippedalongthehorizontalaxistocreate adivisionbetweendayandnightscenes.
