from the
EDITOR THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE COOLING TEMPERATURES and changing leaves that makes this time of year feel absolutely perfect – at least in my opinion. Not only does the change in season mean a beautiful time of year to enjoy the great outdoors surrounded by the ones you love, but also it signals a shift in our attire. Luckily for us, in this issue LN fashion editor Katie Yeadon shares a fall fashion preview that you’re sure to fall for. Starting on p. 56, Yeadon showcases five stunning looks that reflect the hottest styles of the season – from florals and solids to beautiful cuts and patterns. We hope these looks inspire you for your next autumn adventure – perhaps at a local winery like the one where this week’s fashion feature was shot. And speaking of adventures … On p. 71, LN car aficionado Ryan Scott shares his test drive experience with the Tesla S P90D. Although I’m not well versed in automotive jargon, Scott’s experience, knowledge and quick wit ensure that his reviews are engaging and fun reads – and this week’s car doesn’t sound half bad, either! All the best,

NEW CITY SCHOOL
Redefining
EDUCATION By Amanda Dahl | Portrait by Sarah Conard | School photos courtesy of New City School
O
ne St. Louis school redefines education with an innovative program based on nurturing different types of learning. New City School bases its teachings on the theory of multiple intelligences, which details eight abilities worthy of development: musicalintelligence; spatial; linguistic intelligence; logicalmathematical; bodily-kinesthetic; interpersonal; intrapersonal; and naturalist intelligence. “We were founded in 1969 primarily to stabilize the Central West End neighborhood,” the new head of school, Alexis Wright, states. “A group of area residents, along with their children, met and discussed the possibility of opening a school. It’s a remarkable story of their unique vision [to unite] children [of diversity], and I think they have remained true to that founding idea.” Hailing from New York City, where he served as dean of children’s programs and head of school at Bank Street College of Education, Wright connects
with the mission of his new home. “New City School has been an anchor in the Central West End. Its bold vision, strong commitment to academic excellence, a rigorous education program and diversity really appealed to me,” he says. This hands-on approach introduces children to different branches of creative thinking by exposing them to new skills, as exemplified in the school’s unique library. “The use of the multiple-intelligences theory as a basis for our curriculum enhances the strength of our academic program. It allows for children to [use] a range of strengths and talents to learn and grow,” Wright explains. “We’re proud that this is the world’s first multiple-intelligences library, designed with creative input from Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University, who developed the theory. It’s ultimately a space that encompasses different ways for children to interact with the written word.” From an amphitheater for storytelling and acting to an exploratorium for images and activities, the library proves an extension
of the classroom with both a full-time librarian and multiple-intelligences specialist on hand. The school also uses city resources, such as the local food pantry or community garden, which fourth-graders take an active role in maintaining. “We get to utilize the urban area for teachable moments,” he shares. “A large part of our curriculum is based around community – seeing how important it is and expanding one’s community outside of the classroom.” Diverse to its core, the school brings in students from 52 ZIP codes, uniting communities found all over. “We’re approaching our 50th anniversary, which obviously is a significant milestone,” Wright says. “I want us to remain strong and at the forefront of elementary school education for the next 50 years. We have an important role to play in the St. Louis area and beyond.” 5209 Waterman Blvd., St. Louis, 314-361-6411, newcityschool.org

St. Louis Crisis Nursery
CELEBRITY WAITERS NIGHT
C
Photos and story by Bryan Schraier
elebrities from many different areas donated their time to serve as servers at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery’s Celebrity Waiters Night. Three restaurants at West County Center played host, while music, silent-auction items, food and beverage tastings, and more filled the patio between BRAVO! Cuccina Italiana, J. Gilbert’s and McCormick & Schmick’s. The St. Louis Crisis Nursery provides support and services to families with children from birth through 12 years old who find themselves experiencing crises like domestic violence, illness or a death in the family, as well as a lack of utilities, food or shelter. Through multiple programs such as Crisis Care for Kids, family empowerment, community outreach and training, along with its 24-hour helpline, the organization has been saving babies’ lives, keeping kids safe and building strong families.

Missouri’s ‘New Perennials’

s our climate changes to milder winters, many of our former annual plants are becoming marginally or reliably hardy. For these “new perennial” plants, it means that if planted in well-drained soil – given protection from drying winter winds and an extra-generous layer of mulch for the season – what once was annual has become perennial. Some great examples follow: ■ Mexican petunia (Ruellia simplex [syn. brittoniana]), a great border plant, comes from Central and South America. ‘Purple Showers,’ ‘Snow White’ and pink-flowered ‘Chi-Chi’ may reach 3 to 4 feet. The dwarf ‘Katie’ series, which is only a foot tall, also comes in purple, white and pink. Listed as hardy in Zones 8 through 10, these have been perennialized here. A large clump of Ruellia is growing at the Missouri Botanical Garden director’s residence against a south-facing wall, and it comes back with a vengeance every year. It has been moved to other locations in the yard, and although it returns in the spring, it has grown less energetically away from the warm wall. It arrives slow in the spring, but appears in early June. In well-drained soil, it will form a dense network of rhizomes, also known as underground stems. Extra mulch is a must if you don’t have a warm south-facing wall. Ruellia is invasive in Florida, and although it can’t grow in Missouri outside of cultivation, ‘Purple Showers’ and the ‘Mayan’ series from the University of Florida breeding program are sterile. ■ Although Salvia species are listed as hardy to Zone 7 and typically are annuals, several species will winter nicely if protected. The mealycup sages (Salvia farinacea) – including the varieties ‘Victoria Blue’ and ‘Strata’ – are now reliably perennial. Each year the mealycup sage gets bushier and lusher. In its third year, the floral show is amazing. Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue,’ with striking blue and metallic-black flowers, also is very hardy here. A large salvia in front of the Climatron currently has reached its second year. By mid-June, the plants passed the 4-foot mark. At this size, ‘Black and Blue’ becomes a focal point, whether in a bed or a border; a favorite of hummingbirds and bumblebees, sages become the center of fluttering activity. ■ Hummingbirds likewise favor the red cape fuchsia, the South African Phygelius cultivar ‘Devil’s Tears.’ A charming plant with bright, tubular flowers, it is listed for Zones 7 through 9, but is extremely hardy and adaptable. If happily situated, it can take over an area in a season or two. It makes a woody subshrub with a flowering mass that blooms continually until a hard freeze. No matter the size, it will die all the way to the ground each winter. Although uncommon here, it is available through catalogs – and well worth the investment. So this fall, as you tidy your garden for winter, try leaving some of your annuals in the ground. Give them a good coat of mulch for the coming cold, and see if you yourself have any “new perennials” next spring.

magine overlooking the natural wonder of the Mississippi River through the expansive windows of your geometric-shaped modern home. This isn’t just a dream that architectural designer Rocio Romero is creating for one St. Louis family: She has brought clients’ visions of their perfect homes to life across the country, as well as in Canada, France and Chile. Romero, who experienced both North and South American architecture while growing up in San Diego and Chile, fell in love with the field as a college student backpacking through Europe. “It hit me square in the face,” she says, adding that she became a minimalist, drawn to functional, simple residential design with a natural flow that welcomes you home. The newfound passion led Romero to major in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental design. She went on to earn a master’s degree in architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture. In 2002, Romero moved to St. Louis and launched her first residential design, the LV Series. Inspired by her admiration for minimalist architecture, the series offers modern, efficient, quality homes available in affordable prefabricated kits that can be constructed

by any qualified contractor for $120 to $195 per square foot. Named for Laguna Verde, a small beach town in Romero’s home country of Chile, the LV Series comprises the signature LV, the smaller LVM, the larger LVL and the LVG – a garage starting at $22,000. The LVM is a 693-square-foot modern studio and office space or small guesthouse with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living-and-dining area, starting at $25,500. The LV, which starts at $36,500, is a 1,344-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a living room, dining room, kitchen and tucked-away closets. The LVL, starting at $43,000, adds 325 square feet of modern living space to the signature LV structure. The LV Series models can be combined or customized for each client. “Everyone wants it a little different and has different needs,” Romero says. Her design team can work with clients to stack two or more LV models for an LV2, a two-story house; to add an LVT, a $19,000 tower that creates a taller entry to an LV Series home; or to put in an LVC, a $6,000 courtyard that creates an outdoor living area. A basement also can be added to any LV Series model. The first LV model home was built in Chile in 1999. “The project went over budget, and I thought that a prefabricated technique could replicate the design in a more affordable fashion,” Romero says. So she spent the next three years developing her

series. “It looks deceivingly simple – we hide all the complexity behind the sleek, modern look,” she says. The LV home kit, which has been sold to everyone from young professionals to large families all over the world, includes exterior and interior wall panels, steel posts and tapered boards. With two sets of exterior walls, the gutters are hidden, and the home’s energy efficiency is doubled. Exterior walls are available in a variety of colors, from silver metallic to bone white, regal red, sky blue, terra cotta and more. The models are built on a concrete slab and tucked into their natural surroundings, whether that be nestled amid a wooded area or perched upon a mountainside overlooking water. Depending on its color, the home can seamlessly blend into the landscape. And with ample floor-to-ceiling windowpanes, it resembles a glowing cube at night. For the interior, a materials list is included with suggestions for furniture, fixtures and accessories, which are available at home stores such as IKEA. Some clients opt for buying a home kit with instructions for their contractor to build, while others choose to work with Romero’s design team to customize their model from the exterior walls to the interior furniture, cabinetry and accessories, Romero says. “They want to make sure their vision is captured,” she adds.

To help clients fully bring their dream home to reality, in 2014 Romero released her debut line of home accessories and furniture to naturally complement the modern LV lifestyle. The line includes a fire pit, a wood storage seat, an end table, and candleholders and coasters. The best-selling hexagonal coasters – a shape commonly seen in nature and a symbol for efficiency – feature a one-of-a-kind modern design that, like all of Romero’s creations, aims to evoke both strength and elegance. Romero and her work have been featured in exhibitions at museums across the globe, including at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Vancouver Art Gallery and La Triennale di Milano. Among new projects, Romero is currently designing a St. Louis County family’s dream home, which will feature a customized LVL model, combined with an LVM guest suite that will serve as an office, and an LVG garage. Every house is special, Romero notes: “Home is the sanctuary of everyone’s lives, where we have our most memorable moments. It’s a pleasure each time I get to be part of re-creating someone’s own personal sanctuary for them and help them realize those dreams.” Rocio Romero, 4814 Washington Blvd. #342, St. Louis, 314-367-2500, rocioromero.com Laduenews.com | sePtember 16, 2016

or nearly 29 years, Expressions Furniture has been the premier custom furniture store in St. Louis. The locally owned store offers a boutique feel that sets it apart from larger chain furniture stores. Owner Anne Tipton says there’s truly something for everyone, because everything is customizable. “We have hundreds of fabrics displayed on the wall, which really helps our customers visualize what a custom piece of furniture will look like,” Tipton says. “If they need another perspective, we will come to their home and offer our design services. We want our clients to feel invested in the design process and guide them to creating a look that is truly their own.” It’s not just upholstery Expressions can customize. Beautiful wood pieces, rugs, bedding and window treatments are also made to order. We are a great resource for our customers and are all about being as individual as our customers are,” Tipton says.

Every August, Expressions redoes its showroom, gearing up for a new season of looks and trends. Tipton says that she’s excited about what the store has to offer this fall and that customers can find all the latest trending styles and fabrics in the redone space. She notes that the store carries everything from traditional looks to contemporary looks, with everything in between. “We have some very fun Kate Spade rugs and accessories to accessorize the beautiful furniture [in the showroom],” she says. A big trend right now is Crypton fabric, Tipton says. This fabric is durable and wearable, and she says it’s great for pieces of furniture that get a lot of traffic or for families who worry about spills and similar complications from the little ones. “It’s perfect for busy households that don’t want to have to do leather but still want that durability,” she says. “It’s a big movement that’s going on right now.” Expressions has an exclusive on a new line of bedding that just arrived, and Tipton says it’s fabulous. “The pieces are created by mixing 100-year-old linens with new linens, and it is absolutely gorgeous,” she says. Little details like this make shopping at Expressions a unique and worthwhile experience. “We’re personalized and take the time to work with our

customers one-on-one,” Tipton says. “People walk in and know right away that Expressions is different from any other store in town. [Customers] are inspired and energized the moment they walk in the door. It’s a oneof-a-kind furniture store, and the best part is it’s a locally owned family business.” 7817 Clayton Road, Clayton, 314-567-6200, expressionsfurniturestl.com

By Dick Smothers I love 20 Minutes to Fitness. Here’s why. I get a special joy from the fact that I’m doing something for myself that I know is helping me become a stronger, more fit, 75-plus-year-old. I first came to 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2008, and it was like nothing I had ever experienced in my life. I had been around gyms for many years, and I was quite aware of all sorts of workout philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about 20 minutes? This I had to see. I saw it and I’m still here. In 2011, I embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the West Coast and points in between, and I couldn’t keep up my workout program. I didn’t pick it up again until 2 years later. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get it back. I was amazed! With every session I get stronger. My stronger body makes my life easier and more enjoyable. My trainer is an excellent coach, and I think accepts the fact that I like to talk while I’m working out. But that’s just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth. I’ll ask her things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time? How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding. I don’t think I can do anymore!” She’ll say, “Yes you can, try one more.” I try, I do one more, and it is not easy, but quite often I find enough strength to do another one after that. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the genius of this program. I exhaust my muscle groups with a high weight for my ability and a low number of slow repetitions. Once a week. I don’t have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based, scientifically proven training program performed on unique specialized equipment with extremely knowledgeable coaches in a non-gym environment. I bike, swim, stand up paddle-board, dance, yoga, meditate, take naps and more. I live with a great sense of gratitude of the blessings God has given me. I don’t take anything for granted, including my muscles. Since I added “20 Minutes to Fitness” to my life, I’m doing just fine, thank you!!!!!

Bright-Eyed Beauty Routine
D
By Kimmie Gotch
o you ever hit the snooze button a few too many times, and then awake in a panic? You’re not alone! If you are crunched for time, but still need to look presentable, let LN counsel you on doing just that – even when you don’t have time for a cup of coffee before work. Follow these six steps to achieve a fresh, eye-catching appearance: 1. Wash your face with cold water. Although the thought of it isn’t ideal, especially during winter, cold water will help wake you and make you feel refreshed. 2. Apply an undereye cream infused with caffeine. The caffeine will help combat puffy undereyes, which can make you appear more tired than you truly are. 3. If you have dark undereye circles, apply a high-coverage concealer. Less isn’t more here, by the way. Add a little concealer to your eyelids as well, to cover any veins on your lids that might make you look tired. And don’t forget to set your eyes with powder; you don’t want your concealer to move throughout the day, revealing your dark circles. 4. Apply bronzer and blush. A little bit of bronzing to your cheekbones goes a long way. Make sure you apply a pink blush to the apples of your cheeks, as the blush will brighten your face, giving you a more-polished look. Also, if you have time, add a highlighter to the top of your cheekbones; dewy skin gives a fresher look to the face. 5. Use a shimmery eye shadow on the inner corners of your eyes. The light will reflect off the shimmer, making your eyes look bigger. 6. Apply mascara! This is one of the most helpful tips that will make you look awake, alert and ready to conquer the day! After completing these six steps, only you will really know how many hours of sleep you got the night before. When you’re tired, you don’t have to let your face show it!

Tourists flock to the cabin of the eleven-year-old, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale’s Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl. Written with all the propulsive tension that made Donoghue’s Room a bestseller.

BAILEY KNOBLOCH & JACOB WILLHITE
Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Blase of Frontenac are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jordan Anne, to Donald H. Sanders III (Trey), son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Sanders Jr. of Town and Country. The bride-to-be graduated in 2006 from Ladue Horton Watkins High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from The George Washington University. Prior to moving back to St. Louis, Jordan spent time in Washington, D.C., working on Capitol Hill and for political campaigns. She currently works in the corporate office of Enterprise Holdings. The future groom graduated in 2006 from Chaminade College Preparatory. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science, with a minor in Spanish, from Denison University, where he played varsity lacrosse. After graduating from law school, Trey moved back to St. Louis to work for a firm in Clayton. In the spring of 2014, Trey founded the law firm D.H. Sanders, LLC. Jordan and Trey went on their first date – a Chaminade dance – during their freshman year of high school. When Jordan moved back to St. Louis in the spring of 2015, they ran into each other at a party and went on a second date the following day. On June 21, Trey proposed while the two were walking their German shepherd puppy, Jaxx. The couple plan to wed in St. Louis in July 2017.
Marty and Vicki Knobloch of Wildwood are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Bailey Lynne, to Jacob Lee, son of Bill and Shannon Willhite of Chesterfield. The couple plan to wed on July 8, 2017, at St. Alban Roe Catholic Church, with a reception following at Norwood Hills Country Club. The bride-to-be graduated from Lafayette High School in 2008. She works for Mercy Heart Hospital St. Louis. The future groom graduated from Lafayette High School in 2009 and attended Jefferson College. He currently works at Dierbergs Markets and recently has accepted a position at St. Luke’s Surrey Place. The couple met in high school and dated for a decade before Jacob popped the question. He proposed to his long-time girlfriend atop the Haleakalā Volcano in the West Maui Mountains of Hawaii. The couple plan to honeymoon in Maui, where they shared this memorable, life-changing moment. The couple will reside in Chesterfield.

Happily Ever After
Foxy
AND THE
SEHRT FAMILY ONCE UPON A TIME, SUE SEHRT WAS looking to adopt a dog – or two. Sehrt is a firm believer in having two pups at once, so each can have a friend to romp around with. She and her mom went out to a Needy Paws Rescue adoption event at the PetSmart in Sunset Hills. Sehrt spotted a little black dog named Marigold, but her mom wasn’t too keen on Marigold since she was still a puppy. They continued looking and spotted a black-and-white dog who was very shy. Foxy, a border collie and Jack Russell terrier mix, was four years old at the time and had been feral. When she was found in Gideon, Missouri, she had heartworms and fleas. But Sehrt was immediately drawn to her. “I thought there was something about her,” Sehrt says. “I could tell she was in need.” Foxy is what Sehrt calls a “special needs girl,” so she wanted to give the dog a place to heal and learn to trust again. She ended up leaving the adoption event with both Foxy and Marigold. “Our last two dogs had been rescued from terrible

situations, and both shook almost to the point of convulsions, so I was hoping we could provide a nurturing environment for Foxy and help her continue to heal and trust as well as learn to love and live life to her fullest potential,” Sehrt says. She’s had both dogs for a few months, and Foxy continues to make improvements. When she was a foster dog, Foxy didn’t want to be touched. She was scared to go outside to go to the bathroom. Sehrt credits former foster mom April Belangee for Foxy’s progress in the 13 months she had her, saying her love and patience made all the difference. Marigold has helped Foxy come out of her shell, along with Sehrt respecting Foxy’s personal space. It didn’t take long before the two dogs were playing together. Foxy watched Marigold interact and play with Sehrt and has started to follow along sometimes. “I let her come to me, and I’ll slowly pet her as she

controls the length of contact time,” Sehrt says. The two pups have “probably 20” toys and a very open house they can run through. Foxy’s still coming out of her shell, though, and will surrender toys to Mari without hesitation. “She’s still coming into her own self and needs to be reassured,” Sehrt says. “She’ll get there. It just takes time.”

What’s So Good About Goodbyes?

“ To come to a point of ‘goodbye,’ we have come to the end of one journey moving toward another; it’s called change. How we handle change determines its benefit in our future.” –An Ottley-ism

just that: Are all goodbyes hard? Yes. Even when you get angry and end a relationship or quit a job on your own terms, doing so still reflects a loss. Also, when you’re unready to release something you love, whether a job or a person, you feel hurt. Finally, even when you’re approaching a better opportunity, greater than you’ve ever experienced or even dreamed of, a sense of loss still can color the vista ahead. If it’s so hard, why say goodbye? You have to let go to grow. Of course, not all goodbyes reflect the same value. You transition from one situation to another for a

Ask any dieter, workaholic, drug abuser, athlete or retiring professional; he or she will tell you the fear of the unknown, despite new potential, can overshadow that of continuing to embrace known mediocrity and the status quo. Even if you say goodbye, how do you forget? You don’t! Lessons from the past nurture a more insightful present – and future. And in acing that figurative course, you may well never forget the people you met along the way who helped you crystalize your values. Co-workers, family members or friends all may feature in fond memories. Why don’t you want to say goodbye? Think about why you’re considering a goodbye. proper goodbye before your boss or mate initiates it. At the end of the day, you must make the best decision for you, your conscience and your vision; you can’t be right for anyone else if you’re not right for yourself – and you make every situation better when you are. A good goodbye always surpasses a false, forced one, especially if you recognize that the “sweet sorrow” (to steal a phrase from Shakespeare) of parting can prompt true joy at some future point. In that regard, never forget that goodbyes can lead to new and better hellos. Almost necessarily, they trigger conversations about the best that was, as well as what’s yet to come. Hyken’s HOMEWORK Assessing Connectivity
By Dr. Russell Hyken
I
n early October, I will be speaking to the middle school parents of Chaminade College Preparatory about teens and social media. My curiosity was particularly piqued by this topic, as I am the father of seventh- and ninth-grade boys. Virtual activity is part of our everyday life, and most families, ours included, frequently discuss and disagree about our online involvements. At the risk of sounding like an old-timer, I remember when the television and telephone were the most significant pieces of technology in our family home. In today’s world, these two things are one, and our kids have never known life any other way. Social media is an integral part of almost every child’s life. In fact, teens are electronically connected about nine hours of every day – more time than they sleep and attend school independently. Research, interestingly, indicates that online interactions have many benefits, including fostering technical skills, enhancing communication abilities and strengthening social connections. That same research, unfortunately, also acknowledges that interpersonal skills are suffering as a result of social media use. Understanding tone, facial expression and nonverbal cues cannot be learned from a screen, for instance, and communicating via a mobile device can prevent users from truly understanding how others feel. Despite the fun and convenience of online opportunities, most kids truly do enjoy and even crave face-to-face interaction and emotional connection. Parents, however, need to encourage this behavior to make sure it happens. Dinnertime should always be tech-free. When friends spend time at the house, require your children to disconnect and go outside. Nothing is better than laughing with family and friends. It is also a parent’s job to teach etiquette. The same rules that apply to in-person communication also apply to the online world. Greeting elders with the proper salutation and saying “please” and “thank you” should be a natural part of all communication. Also, discuss when it is appropriate to view your devices. Model expectations and acknowledge good behavior. For me as a parent in a busy family, texting my kids and wife is convenient and efficient; it is not, though, a substitute for spending time together. Real living takes place in the real world, so make the most of your time together – put those devices down and talk to each other.
Greeting elders with the proper salutation and saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ should be a natural part of all communication.

TEST DRIVE: Tesla Motors
Model S P90d Story and photos by Ryan Scott
WeLcome a precoNceptioN-crushiNg WuNderkiNd!
B
iases. We all have them. I’ve carried around an irrational dislike for Brussels sprouts for the past 35 years – the mere mention of them would invoke a queasy stomach rumble. Recently, though, a friend ordered a side of bacon-roasted sprouts, and the intoxicating aroma grabbed me. Just like that, I felt a fool for depriving myself of the vegetable for all these years. Bias destroyed. My feelings toward electric cars – and Tesla Motors specifically – have been similarly wary since the introduction of such vehicles. I was convinced I had no use in my life for a four-wheeled blender. And battery power … How could that possibly be as exciting as harnessing the force of thousands of tiny explosions per minute? As a writer, however, I have to occasionally challenge my biases. Sometimes they’re reaffirmed, and other times they’re wadded up and thrown into the trash, like my former feelings about Brussels sprouts. I knew going into the St. Louis Tesla dealer that conquering my bias against electron-propelled vehicles was going to be as easy as clearing an 8-foot high jump. Because the Model S P90D is as much a piece of software as it is hardware, Tesla had arranged for communications representative Sonja Koch to be on hand when I arrived. My only Tesla experience had been years prior, and I remembered the cutting board-sized center screen to be on the clunky side, and interior fit and finish to be marginal, at best. Well, first bias challenged and overcome – the current incarnation of Tesla’s living space is a quantum leap. Whether born from voodoo magic or just solid engineering, that big, beautiful display somehow doesn’t wash out in the least when you open the sunroof or wear polarized sunglasses. The display was so logical to this 40-something that I soon found myself not paying attention to Koch’s tutelage. My ears perked up immediately upon mention of “ludicrous mode,” though: I couldn’t say fast enough that the car would go and stay in max, for everything. With the software crash course completed, my attention turned to the interior as a whole. My first thought was how it has a distinctly Scandinavian feel, high on quality but minimalistic in quantity. Contrasting dash elements of suede, leather, aluminum and wood come together with style and precision. With the nearly edgeto-edge skylight, the interior felt fresh enough to eat off of. It doesn’t deliver the opulence of a Porsche Panamera interior, for example, but offers legitimate luxury with its own twist. The interior execution is no doubt in another league compared to Teslas of just a few short years ago, but still, this is where most complaints about the car reside. During my drive time, it was typically oppressive St. Louis summer, and I felt as though the cooling was a bit stressed trying to cope. I get that the ideology is more form than function, but a bit more of the latter would be welcomed – a pocket in the door panels, for example.

What do you call a gas pedal when there’s no gas? An electron pedal? Whatever you call it, the promise of what happens when mashed in this car is the main event. Like many companies that name their models based on the engine displacement, Tesla names its vehicles based on the juice contained in the battery pack. P90D is the biggest number in its lineup, with a battery pack of 90 kilowatt-hours. Having “ludicrous mode” means the electronics and physical hardware are upgraded in that pack, allowing it to supply power at a faster rate to the dual electric motors – one large in the rear, one smaller in front. The faster you can supply juice to an electric motor, the more power it makes. Put it all together, and this car creates 762 horsepower. Ludicrous might not be a strong enough adjective. One press of the whatever-it’s-called pedal, and immediately it’s obvious that these are unlike any other horsepower you’ve felt before. The immediacy with which the wave of acceleration hits is startling; organs in your chest are shifted in their position. Imagine your 3-year-old jumping into your bed at 6 a.m. and, before you have a chance to wake up, dropping all of his or her weight directly in the middle of your chest. Some will read that and think, “Well, that sounds terrible,” but others will think, “Gimme, gimme, gimme.” It’s not just that it accelerates with such brutality when called upon – it’s that it does it with such ease, as well. The Tesla is maybe the easiest car on the planet to drive and to drive fast. There aren’t any gears to row through, and it’s impossible to induce tire slip thanks to its techno-wizardry – just point in the proper direction, and apply your right foot. Oh, and breathe deeply so you don’t lose consciousness. Seriously, it’s point and shoot. Anybody can get into a Tesla and immediately feel like Mario Andretti. Similar to the giggle-inducing exhaust note of the Jaguar F-Type, it’s easy to give the Tesla’s straight-line prowess a disproportionate percentage of the available word count. The Model S I drove with air-ride suspension is, however, very nearly as impressive in handling. It almost defies logic – this is a 5,000-pound car, after all! But the opportunities provided with electric-car architecture allow engineers maybe not to break the laws of physics, but certainly to bend them in their favor. Approximately 25 percent of the car’s weight comes from its battery pack, and that pack can be placed extremely low in the chassis, giving it a huge advantage in center of gravity. Having a low center of gravity helps the car resist roll forces. Translation: It can go harder and deeper into corners than you’d ever expect. This car is able to be driven aggressively through 20 mph switchbacks, despite its size. It’s neutrally balanced and rotates easily. Some of the biggest smiles I’ve ever felt behind the wheel of a car came from combining the impressive cornering forces with its otherworldly acceleration forces every time you pop out of a corner. Yeah, I could get used to that!
So what is this car supposed to be – to whom should it appeal? Well, as I told store manager Cam Sneathen on returning the Model S P90D to the dealer, this car can be anything to anybody. It can be a comfortable luxury cruiser, it can be an efficient family mover, or it can be an asphalt-buckling face-peeler. To remove the suspense, my bias has been thoroughly eviscerated: I absolutely love this car. Is it perfect? No. But there are so many pieces of the puzzle when considering Tesla. As fast as its product has improved and continues to improve, I don’t see how other manufacturers will be able to keep pace. Consider Auto Pilot, Tesla’s self-driving mode (something I haven’t discussed, but it works very well). It was a software update. Imagine waking up one morning having that as a gift, installed and ready to roll. Tesla is pushing advances as quickly as it can, unlike traditionally slow rollouts. Just as I’m writing this story, Tesla announced a P100D, with a bigger battery with more range and more-efficient power delivery that results in a 0-to-60 of 2.5 seconds versus 2.8 of the P90D. There’s so much more I could talk about, like Summon, which opens your garage door, parks the car, shuts it down and more, or how quickly Tesla is rolling out Supercharger stations across the country, making the car just as reasonable for long road trips as anything else. Given what it is, what it can do and how rapidly it’s advancing, Tesla would have to land my highest recommendation in the luxury sedan space. As much as I love some of the other available options and as much as I love a raucous exhaust note, Tesla has stolen the crown.

acationers might recognize Mellow Mushroom from hot spots across the nation. The hippie-inspired concept, founded in Atlanta circa 1974, currently has more than 200 locations across the country. In July, the first Mellow Mushroom franchise in Missouri debuted in Sunset Hills. “We specialize in pizza. Something about our dough is absolutely amazing. People love it and crave it,” says general manager Chris Deatherage. “We also make calzones, hamburgers, sandwiches and salads. We’re huge on gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan offerings – there’s a little bit of everything.” The full-service restaurant fills a large space previously occupied by Growler’s Pub. According

to Deatherage, no two Mellow Mushrooms are identical. SPACE Architecture + Design incorporated elements of the brand’s retro identity with eclectic contemporary elements. Altogether, the restaurant accommodates seating for approximately 200 guests. In the dining room, wavy ceiling décor meshes with colorful tiles and booths, hanging globular lights, funky statues and paintings by local artist Phil Jarvis (profiled in the June 17 LN). The sizable patio features a full bar, bocce ball and plenty of seating, including tables locally crafted by Mwanzi Co. (profiled in the April 29 LN). “It’s a sit-down place with a lot of local flair and all fresh ingredients,” Deatherage says. “All of our dough is hand-tossed when you order it. It’s not as thick as

It’s a little bit thicker with cornmeal and some other things to make it moist and sweet.” According to its website, Mellow Mushroom’s signature dough features high-protein, unbleached wheat flour, Appalachian spring water and no refined white sugar. Its pizza sauce is made with vine-ripened tomatoes and a proprietary blend of herbs and spices free of additives and preservatives. Popular specialty pies include the Mighty Meaty, which features red sauce topped with mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham and Applewoodsmoked bacon. Another highlight, the Magical Mystery Tour, features a pesto base with button and portobellos, feta and mozzarella, spinach and light

jalapeños on a pesto-baked crust. The local menu mostly mirrors that of the chain’s other locations. However, after 90 days in business, the franchise can develop a local-only food menu with up to five unique specialties – to be decided. The drink menu features a full bar with 32 draft beers and more than 30 wines by the glass. MO Mellow LLC intends to establish additional locations of the chain in the greater St. Louis area. For now, guests can stop in to the Sunset Hills location for a taste of stone-baked classic Southern pizza.
Story: It’s been 30 years since the Weismann Follies last played the once-luxurious Weismann Theatre. Between the two world wars, the Weismann girls, adorned in resplendent costumes, filled the handsome venue with audiences thrilled to see their intricate song-and-dance routines. The Weismann closed with the arrival of World War II and has stood dormant since. Now, just before the stately but dilapidated structure is scheduled to be razed for a parking lot, one-time impresario Dimitri Weismann has invited many of his former performers to a grand finale of a party to reminisce about bygone days and to say au revoir to the era of the glitzy Weismann Follies. Those who attend bring with them updates of their lives as well as memories of their time spent in the limelight of the Great White Way. In particular, Sally Durant Plummer and Phyllis Rogers Stone think back to what their lives were like three decades before, when they met two ambitious young men named Buddy Plummer and Benjamin Stone. Sally loved Ben but married Buddy, who became a modestly successful traveling salesman. Phyllis ended up with Ben and a life in the fast line of high finance and opulence. Now, with the reunion, old romantic flames are rekindled. Playing with matches, though, is always problematic, no matter what the age. Highlights: Steven Woolf, Augustin Family Artistic Director of The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, has seen Follies more times than any other Broadway production. It’s been a goal of his to produce the show on The Rep’s stage, and what better time than to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the troupe (featured in the September 9 LN)? Follies is a theatrical spectacle. Goals are made to be pursued, though, and Woolf and The Rep have realized theirs with a sumptuous, stunning and spectacular presentation of Stephen Sondheim’s multiple Tony Award-winning masterpiece. Other Info: Woolf points out in his Letter to Subscribers that Follies is rarely performed due to the sheer scope of its structure. The Rep’s presentation, for instance, features 28 performers and a 12-piece orchestra. The Rep’s production is breathtaking and exquisite
By Mark Bretz from both technical and performing perspectives. Director Rob Ruggiero makes optimal use of The Rep’s stage to give the production impressive dimension and depth, played out on scenic designer Luke Cantarella’s imposing stage within a stage. Music supervisor Brad Haak realizes Sondheim’s ambitious score – with a spirited, soulful interpretation of the music, with conductor Valerie Maze – and guides a dozen versatile musicians through the enchanting melodies. As for the choreography, Ralph Perkins offers several grand and glorious dance numbers that accentuate Sondheim’s lilting music. The Rep’s stellar cast features Christiane Noll and Emily Skinner in the primary roles of Sally and Phyllis, accompanied by Adam Heller as Buddy and Bradley Dean as Ben. Each of the quartet excels at developing their characters, including their foibles and “follies,” giving them dimension as well as poignant dramatization. They also each get to showcase their musical talents in the second act, when the Follies of their minds are realized in individual numbers that define who they are. Those pieces are witty and beautifully conceived, even if the second act of this production seems less lively than the first. The production features not one but three showstoppers, all in rapid succession in the first act. Zoe Vonder Haar leads the way as the unstoppable Hattie Walker in her rousing rendition of “Broadway Baby.” That’s followed shortly thereafter by E. Faye Butler as Stella Deems in her vivacious performance of “Who’s That Woman?” Nancy Opel then brings down the house as her character, the lusty Carlotta Campion, relating the story of her spicy life in “I’m Still Here.” Whether you enjoy wonderful music, enchanting choreography or a well-told tale, Follies has it all, and The Rep’s production realizes its enduring brilliance.

lthough fine art and dental hygiene might strike some as strange bedfellows, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) will greet visitors with just such a conceptual mattress/box-spring juxtaposition starting today. More specifically, the museum will present “Kelley Walker: Direct Drive,” the first solo American museum exhibition by that multidisciplinary New York artist, through Dec. 31. In context, the modifier museum bears noting. Two years ago, New York City’s Paula Cooper Gallery also hosted a solo exhibition of Walker’s work, accompanied by a 116-page color monograph with an essay by esteemed art historian Robert Hobbs. Be that as it may, the exhibition here has

been gestating for quite some time, says Jeffrey Uslip, CAM’s chief curator and deputy director for exhibitions and programs. “I chose to work with Kelley Walker three years ago when I assumed the chief curatorship at CAM,” Uslip relates. “We have been working on this show for the past three years.” He adds that Walker will attend both today’s opening and an “artist talk” tomorrow. Like most fine art, of course, Walker’s work might not suit every viewer’s taste, especially inasmuch as that work, digitally if not actually, incorporates substances as unlikely as smeared toothpaste. Two pieces from earlier in the millennium, for example, reportedly bear the titles Aquafresh plus Crest with whitener and Aquafresh plus Crest with tartar control. Walker, self-evidently, is operating at a rarefied conceptual level; in places, in discussing his own work, he sounds like Greil Marcus in Lipstick Traces, that acclaimed polymath’s scarily magisterial 1989 “Secret History of the 20th Century,” to quote the tome’s subtitle. “I was intrigued with how a work changes from being marketed as culturally relevant to becoming a potentially historical object and also a commodity,” Hobbs, in a 2007 encomium, quotes Walker as saying. Elsewhere in the same place, the art historian also quotes the artist thus: “I wanted zero, but I wanted the negative and positive to remain on both sides of zero. There was no way to begin with zero because whatever I would start with, it would have a history.” In any event, Uslip himself sounds enthusiastic
about the Walker exhibition’s sheer, exuberant scale, which he characterizes as “carefully articulated to create site-responsive and site-specific encounters.” For readers cursed with museum-speak nearsitedness, Uslip expounds on that comment about an exhibition that effectively and playfully redefines the phrase outsider art. “Kelley’s exhibition is a museumwide exhibition – the façade and courtyard are very important exhibition spaces for the museum,” he says. “Our director, Lisa Melandri, began our façade project titled ‘Street Views’ in 2013, which engages the public in ways that are both inclusive and expansive.” The Walker exhibition, Uslip adds, will generate tandem publications. “The first, titled Kelley Walker: Black Star Press, will include a text by [influential New Yorker writer/ theater critic] Hilton Als and a postscript written by me,” he says. “This publication focuses on issues of race and identity.” The second, he continues, will bear the title Kelley Walker: Direct Drive, will encompass the whole exhibition and will include contributions by Uslip himself, Als again, Christophe Cherix (chief curator of drawings and prints at the Big Apple’s Museum of Modern Art) and two other writers. “The first publication will be ready for the opening,” Uslip says. “The second publication will come out in December and feature installation images from the exhibition.” Born in 1969 in urban west-central Georgia, Walker earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1995 and

a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1998. For some time now, he has enjoyed a reputation as a critics’ darling. A 2008 Interview magazine piece on him, for instance, opened by opining, “Perhaps no artist deals so strategically and systematically with pop culture as Kelley Walker.” (The same piece subsequently referred to “the point where pop is kitsch,” a rather fine distinction in the current era.) Like an electromagnet and iron shavings, Walker’s work – variously dubbed “appropriation art,” “neoappropriationist” and “secondary appropriation” – has inspired regular references to artistic past masters of controversy: Marcel Duchamp, France’s mack daddy of Dada delirium; Jackson Pollock, America’s splashy purveyor of “action paintings”; and almost necessarily, Andy Warhol, Mr. “15 Minutes of Fame.” It also has inspired mentions of Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto, and French pass-theaspirin philosophers Roland Barthes and Guy Debord. Here, in addition to many extant works from prior
exhibitions – among them “Black Star Press,” “Bricks,” “Disasters,” “Recycling,” “schema” and “Volkswagen Bug” – Walker will be spotlighting various new pieces of art, says Uslip. Regarding those new pieces, he previews a passage from his postscript to Kelley Walker: Black Star Press: “For ‘Direct Drive,’ Walker presents new works made specifically for CAM, including a ‘mimic wall’ sculpture – an exact replica of a [CAM] wall – that manifests in the physical world the digital concept of copying and pasting, alongside new series of sculptures comprising MacBook Pros that have been laser-cut, folded and turned inside-out … ” The MacBook component, he notes in passing, loosely explains what inspired the second half of the new exhibition’s title: “‘Direct Drive’ refers to the streamlined motors that are used in hard drives and turntables.” For the St. Louis exhibition, Walker also will revisit a signally puckish piece from a 2006 Brussels gallery installation: a functional chocolate disco ball.

Regarding that ball, though, potential attendees oughtn’t fret about packing parasols. “The chocolate is stable,” Uslip dryly notes. “It will not melt or drip.” Walker has shanghaied chocolate as an artistic medium otherwise, in a caveat lector fashion for residents of a metropolitan area repeatedly rocked by social unrest since 2014. That is, his “Black Star Press” works from a 2006 Memphis exhibition appropriate photographic images of the Birmingham, Alabama, race riots of 1963, atop which Walker has artfully squeegeed melted chocolate. Regarding those intriguing but potentially controversial works, Uslip succinctly replies, “The ‘Black Star Press’ series is prominently featured in the [local] exhibition.” Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, 3750 Washington Blvd., St. Louis, 314-535-4660, camstl.org
