Long-term Kirkwood development team Savoy Properties has teamed up with new-construction luxury condo expert Ellen Reid of Reid Case Group to transform the Kirkwood condo market. We are all United 2020 has proven to be a year like no other. For all of us, it’s been unexpected. For some, though, it was more than unexpected. It was devastating. Many in our community went into this year with hopes and dreams and plans but found a different reality. A reality that meant hard decisions about which bills to pay, whether to buy food or medicine, and how to make ends meet. Many are at this crossroads for the first time in their lives. That’s why the four of us decided we needed to do something. And, the best way we could make a real impact on our region was through United Way. When COVID-19 started, United Way was there to respond immediately. When agencies
Dave Steward Founder and Chairman World Wide Technology
needed to start up new programs and services to meet new and growing demands, United Way was there to ensure they could do so. When our hardest hit neighbors had nowhere else to turn, United Way was there for them. We are incredibly proud to lead the 2020 United Way campaign. Time and time again, our community steps up through United Way when the need is great. There is no time more important than the present. It is now, in these unprecedented times, that we are calling on you to unite with us. We are asking you to support the St. Louis region and all the people in it by making a commitment to United Way. Thank you for helping people live their best possible lives. Unite with us at WeAreAllUnited.org.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
In my opinion, the pages of Ladue News can and should do many things. They should uplift, inform, and entertain. They should provide resources, news and a platform for voices in our community.
FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA
These pages should cover important stories, like LN digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith’s feature on Page 18, in which local nonprofit organizations that support domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors share the specific challenges they are facing during the pandemic, as well as resources for individuals in need.
Enhance your feed with home, style and community news by liking and following Ladue News on Facebook.
Follow @laduenews on Instagram for a fresh look at content in our magazine and online, plus exclusive community insight.
LN Online Local galas and gatherings look quite different today compared to this time last year. As event planners pivot to virtual festivities, Ladue News is also adapting its event coverage in our digital spaces. Go to laduenews.com to read about unique events, such as the upcoming Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri’s 75th Anniversary Celebration, which will take place in various venues to ensure social distancing. In addition, check out our online calendar for details on future events.
Keep up with our latest stories and updates by following @LadueNews on Twitter.
These pages should highlight efforts of community connection, like the local art exhibition “From Periphery to Center,” which LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach details on Page 51. This exhibition, presented by two different St. Louis County parks, was created to spark conversation across the area. These pages should engage local residents with metro area businesses – like Virago Candle Studio. LN contributor Bethany Christo’s feature on Page 25 provides an inside look at their artisanal, hand-poured candles, which the LN staff has collectively fallen in love with and will most likely be purchasing all of. Ladue News should give you, our dear reader, something to look forward to and something that helps you in some way, every single issue.

he PGA TOUR Champions and Ascension recently announced that the 2020 Ascension Charity Classic and associated events, scheduled for Sept. 28 through Oct. 4 in St. Louis, are canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of continued pandemic-related concerns throughout the country and within St. Louis city and county, tournament organizers have made the decision to move the inaugural event to 2021. “It’s not what any of us wanted, but the PGA TOUR and Ascension made the right decision for our region,” said Winston Calvert, chief of staff to St. Louis County Executive Sam Page, in a release. Ticket holders for the 2020 Ascension Charity Classic can either donate the value of their ticket to charity or request a refund by contacting the tournament ticket office at tickets@ascensioncharityclassic.com. Next year’s Ascension Charity Classic is scheduled for the week of Sept. 6 at Norwood Hills Country Club. While the inaugural event will not take place as planned this year, organizers confirmed the tournament remains on track to provide significant charitable contributions to organizations in North St. Louis County as part of the current four-year agreement. Meanwhile, several major amateur tournaments have crowned their champions in 2020.

Christopher Ferris, a senior this fall at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, has won the 30th Metropolitan Amateur Championship in spectacular fashion. “I just went out and played my game,” Ferris says. “I knew the front 9 was my 9 and played the front in 6-under the Christopher first two days; if I played it in 3-under, it would make it a match Ferris on the back 9.” Applying the pressure when it mattered most, Ferris capped off the summer with a remarkable final round 66. Next, regarded as one of the top amateur players ever in the region, Skip Berkmeyer won the 2020 Missouri Stroke Play Championship for the third time. The 23rd edition of the four-round event was played at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis. Berkmeyer of Town and Country finished with a 9-under par score of 271. He shot round of 68, 71, 69 and 63. Finishing second was Ryan Sullivan of Arnold at 275. Berkemyer was inducted last year into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame and has qualified 31 times for USGA events and played in 11 U.S. Amateurs.

CONNECT THE DOTS
Speaking Up By Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande
O
ver the years, I have stumbled across a number of parables that seem fairly relevant to current circumstances. One of my favorites is the following. Taylor’s parents were convinced their son was going to be brilliant. He was an extremely observant child, blessed with an extraordinary sunny personality. At times, he would play alone by the hour, sometimes listening to classical music as he played and invented new games. There was only one problem. At age 5, Taylor still had not spoken a single word. Alarmed, his parents took him to every specialist, speech therapist and child psychologist for miles around, but nothing could get him to speak. His parents were desperate. Then, one morning, as his mother was making breakfast, Taylor suddenly yelled, “The toast is burning!” Crying tears of joy, his parents hugged the little boy and asked, “Why
haven’t you ever said anything all these years?” “Because,” he replied, “everything was all right up to now.” Like Taylor, it’s up to each of us to speak up when we see things askew. That is the American way. When we see others in need of help, we stop and help. When we take time to listen to other’s problems or worries, we empathize and seek a way to lend a hand. We don’t have to agree with someone’s beliefs or ideas, but we should acknowledge that everyone has a right to speak and an equal value as a person. We can agree to disagree, but let’s do it respectfully and with the aim of finding common ground. Sometimes, it takes a 5-year-old child to remind us of our responsibilities. It’s easy to look back and say everything has been all right till now, but it’s time now to embrace the words of the late, esteemed John Lewis: “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?”

Local nonprofit organizations that support domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors are working especially hard to combat a growing problem.
W
hile the country wages war against COVID-19, local nonprofit leaders remain focused on a battle growing increasingly difficult to fight: the battle against domestic and sexual violence. The pandemic hasn’t necessarily caused more incidents of domestic and sexual violence to occur, but it has exacerbated stressors that lead to an increase in the incidents and severity of violence and made it more difficult for victims, often called “survivors,” to get help, experts say. Samantha Wayant, the community engagement specialist for YWCA Metro St. Louis, describes it this way: “Domestic violence is all about power and control. COVID, unfortunately, is this kind of tool the abuser can use to say, ‘Well, you can’t go to your mom’s, you can’t go to your friend’s because what if you give them COVID?’ or ‘If you leave this house, you’re going to get COVID.’” According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intimate partner violence, which includes physical and sexual violence, “is a serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans.” Since COVID-19 began spreading in the metro area, nonprofits that address intimate partner violence have been impacted in various ways, such as having to cut back on in-person services and cancel or rethink fundraising events. Safe Connections, a metro area nonprofit working to prevent intimate partner violence, serves almost 20,000 people annually and has transitioned to primarily virtual services and programming, CEO Susan Kidder says. Therapy is now provided through telehealth services, and educational campaigns now target young people on social media and in virtual classroom settings. “We, of course, believe that healthy relationships are so vital for young people to learn about,” Kidder says. “If we’re able to continue our prevention education and prevent domestic and sexual violence from happening in the first place, then we’ll have communities, neighborhoods, societies filled with healthy, vibrant relationships.” The YWCA Metro St. Louis Domestic Violence Drop-In Center closed in the pandemic’s earlier months and recently reopened for appointments only. Wayant says this is the only stand-alone drop-in center in the metro area dedicated to aiding survivors of intimate partner violence. “You can come in for an array of reasons,” Wayant explains. “You can come in saying, ‘I want to speak with somebody because I’m feeling retriggered from something that happened in my past,’ to ‘I don’t really know quite know why I’m here; I just want to talk to somebody,’ to ‘I need help finding a way to safely leave an abusive relationship.’” YWCA’s Sexual Assault Response Team, which responds 24/7 to 14 area emergency rooms as sexual assault and domestic violence survivors come in, had to decrease its hospital visits because of pandemic-related policies. “It’s one of those services that you really need to be there in person to provide that emotional support,” Wayant adds. Some “visits” were done over phone calls, but overall, visits declined by 21 percent in the five months following initial stay-at-home orders, compared to the five months prior. Crisis hotlines always remain open at both the YWCA and Safe Connections, allowing survivors to call and discuss options and
resources with a trained advocate. Kidder says Safe Connections will soon provide a number to text, as well. Calls to YWCA’s crisis line, 314-531-7273, increased by 10 percent in the five months following initial stay-at-home orders, compared to the five months prior. Wayant thinks that can be attributed to people seeking help from its Rapid Re-Housing program, which launched in October of 2019. Calls to the Safe Connections 24-Hour Crisis Helpline, 314-5312003, decreased by 23 percent in April 2020 compared to April 2019, which Kidder says is problematic, too. When survivors are trapped at home with their abuser, it’s difficult for them to find a safe, private place to call for help. Calls went up in May and June but dipped again in July. “There was a lot more fear about being discovered as [a survivor] reaching out for help, and so that was just an enormous concern to us,” Kidder continues. “If a survivor is able to make a call to us, we are very careful in how we communicate, and we advise the survivor to be very careful with how they are communicating.” Additionally, the decline of in-person interactions during the pandemic has resulted in fewer opportunities for others to intervene. Domestic abuse often comes to light when health care providers, teachers and social workers notice signs of abuse in their patients, students and clients and make a report on their behalf. Nearly one in five women and one in seven men report experiencing severe physical violence from an intimate partner, according to the CDC. Kidder emphasizes that this problem affects people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages and abilities. Wayant says it’s likely everyone knows someone experiencing abuse, whether they realize it or not. Both Kidder and Wayant share similar ways people can help: Check in on isolated friends or neighbors, call a helpline if you suspect abuse, make resources known and donate to organizations supporting YWCA Metro St. Louis Domestic survivors. Lists of area Violence/Sexual Assault Line: resources are available on the websites of both of their 314-645-4848 organizations. 24-Hour Crisis Line: 314-531-7273 “We can’t stop providing our services because of the Safe Connections pandemic,” Wayant says. “If 24-Hour Crisis Helpline: anything, our services 314-531-2003 are needed more now than ever.” YWCA Metro St. Louis, 3820 West Pine Blvd., St. Louis, 314-5311115, ywcastl.org Safe Connections, 2165 Hampton Ave., St. Louis, 314-646-7500, safeconnections.org

hen you burn a Virago Candle Studio soy wax candle, you’re channeling the spirit of a “strong, brave or warlike woman” – the definition of the brand’s name but also the defining mission behind the founding of this St. Louis company. “Virago spoke to me because there are so many of these people in my life who inspire me to be a better daughter, friend, sister, wife and granddaughter,” explains Virago founder Tyra Dizon-Clark. “I like to think that every candle has a little bit of virago spirit in it.” Officially launched in April, Virago offers artisanal, hand-poured candles featuring crackling wooden wicks in blown-glass jars. Sold in 8- and 16-ounce sizes (with burn times of 30 and 60 hours, respectively) and completely recyclable or reusable packaging, the candles’ soothing fragrances and long-lasting ambiance are meant to provide an escape from life’s daily stressors and to project a sense of serenity and hope. “Candles were always a symbol of stability and safety to me, even throughout a childhood and adolescence that wasn’t,” Dizon-Clark says. “Having something in your life that you can do, whether it be lighting a candle or any form of self-care that can make life a little more bearable while also prioritizing yourself, is so important.

I really wanted to create a product that would provide that feeling to others as it does for me.” Born and raised in St. Louis, Dizon-Clark and her wife, Darline, (as well as their three fur babies) moved to Dallas in April 2019. Her wife gifted Dizon-Clark a candle-making kit to help her find a hobby in their new city, and Dizon-Clark, a lifelong lover of candles, quickly discovered she had a knack for creating them, even dabbling with selling her own through her personal Instagram. When the couple decided to move back to St. Louis earlier this year, Dizon-Clark saw it as a sign to light the flame and make her vision of what would become Virago come to life. Now with her website launched and Virago wares available locally at Wink iBoutique and Union Studio, Dizon-Clark has perfected her ideal candle. She uses high-quality ingredients to create clean-burning fragrances free of phthalates (a family of chemicals linked to unsafe negative side effects when present at high levels). Her signature scents include the top-selling Cactus Flower and Jade, as well as a vanilla-sweet Gooey Butter Cake and a fresh and floral Grapefruit and Mint option. She also releases a lineup of rotating seasonal offerings, including the autumnal Toasted Pumpkin Spice, Cranberry Apple Marmalade, Oakmoss and Amber, and White Sage and Lavender. As an indication of how dedicated DizonClark is to studying and crafting the perfect
fragrance to create that virago vibe, she includes three layers of fragrance notes for each candle: top, middle and base. The top notes are the first ones you get when you smell the candle, almost as an introduction to it. “The top notes are what you get when you smell its ‘cold throw,’ or the scent when the candle isn’t lit,” Dizon-Clark says. The middle notes are the ones you smell when the candle is burning. “They’re a bit more complex and full-bodied, and they balance and unite the top and base notes,” she says. Speaking of which, the base notes are the ones that last the longest and tend to linger after the candle is blown out. “They’re heavier and round out the fragrance of the candle,” Dizon-Clark says. By way of example, the best-selling Cactus Flower and Jade has top notes of aloe and agave; middle notes of chrysanthemum, green floral and green leaves; and a base note of patchouli. A fragrance as presumably simple as the lavender scent transforms into something much more complex with the top, middle and base notes of bergamot and lemon, lavender and cedar, respectively. As of Sept. 1, Dizon-Clark has expanded to selling wax melts via her website in both the signature and seasonal offerings. After that, the sky’s the limit, but it’s sure to be something scent-sational. Virago Candle Studio, viragocandlestudio.com

GROOMING & GLAMOUR
Maskne 411 By Amanda Dahl
W
hile the mask is this year’s biggest fashion accessory and a fundamental tool for protection against the novel coronavirus, it can also wreak havoc on your skin. The good news is that acne mechanica (popularly known as maskne) is treatable with the use of products that focus on mitigating skin irritation. “Acne mechanica is caused by a physical disruption to the skin,” says Christen Michel, a licensed esthetician and the founder of Christen Michel Cosmetics. “A mask that covers your mouth creates a moist environment. Your breath traps moisture and heat, which stimulates oil flow. This combination of oil, heat and moisture is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which means blemishes.” She recommends using her Nourished Daily Cleanser (available for $28 at christenmichel.com), which offers soothing ingredients that calm the skin while lifting dirt and bacteria. Carry the Christen Michel Replenished Daily Spritz (available for $26.50 at christenmichel.com) to balance, tone and strengthen your skin throughout the day. With antibacterial properties and soothing minerals, the face spray keeps skin hydrated and replenished. “Nature’s secret weapon is diverse plant power,” says Coco Kennell, founder of Soaplife360. “We formulate skin care with an arsenal of botanicals to create an environment that allows beautiful skin.” Kennell suggests Soaplife360’s Chamomile Icing (available for $36 at soaplife360.com), a mild overnight mask that uses fruit enzymes and plant salicylic acid to unclog pores and clarify your complexion. Her Bamboo Turmeric dual-action resurfacing mask (available for $42 at soaplife360.com) also uses natural

extracts to mildly exfoliate stubborn areas, with 8% alpha hydroxyl acids and beta hydroxyl acid that help brighten dull complexions. Sage Skin Care’s Claw & Paw is ideal for application to any dry, irritated or red areas on your skin. Designed to sit on the skin, the product seals in moisture, even on the face and lips. “One of our premier acne products, [MSSR 2%] is perfect for those suffering from wearing masks all day,” says Melissa Coleman, president and skin care strategist at Sage Skin Care, Inc. “Given the antibacterial component and primary aloe vera
ingredient, this works well to help with redness, chaffing and irritated skin.” These products prove that even as you keep yourself and others safe by wearing a mask in public, you can keep your skin protected, too.

One year later, founders Sarah Jozwiakowski, Melanie Bennett and Karen Drexler look at what they’ve learned and how they plan to grow. “It’s just been a great year,” Jozwiakowski says. “So much of our success has been about the Webster Groves community, and the local shop owners have been very welcoming.” Bennett adds that through the closures and reopening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the local business community was incredibly supportive. “We’ve formed a lot of really good relationships,” she says. “We were able to lean on each other.” Story Seven has spent the year setting up a website, listening to what customers want and getting to know them personally. “We have gotten to know our regular customers, Jozwiakowski explains. “It’s been so fun to celebrate milestones with them and help them pick out gifts for the important people in their lives.” “We’ve really reflected back in the [past] year that many of our customers and community come in for the atmosphere,” Drexler says. “It’s very comfortable for shopping and just gathering.” Right now, Story Seven is preparing that atmosphere

ARTS SPEAK
A Window into a World By Brittany Nay Images courtesy of Walker-Cunningham Fine Art
A visit to one historic home in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood – virtually, that is, amid the pandemic – offers a window into the art world. The unique gallery setting is Walker-Cunningham Fine Art, owner Sarah B. Cunningham’s private consulting and brokerage business specializing in American and European paintings 1850-present and offering services for new and established collectors, museums and institutions sourcing and brokering fine art acquisitions. Cunningham recently shared details with LN about its current exhibition, showings during the pandemic and her love for St. Louis’ “eclectic, dynamic” art scene.
ln
Tell us about Walker-Cunningham Fine Art. I’ve been in the art business for just over 21 years. After spending about 15 years in Boston, my family and I moved to St. Louis, and I now work privately out of my CWE home where I regularly curate and mount pop-up exhibits. In prepandemic times, we would celebrate each show with a reception and viewing hours by appointment. Today, everything is viewable online and via virtual video chat viewings by appointment, with the option to see things “on approval” in person via contactless delivery before committing to buy. What excites you about St. Louis’ art scene? When my husband, David, had the opportunity to join the department of sociology at Washington University in St. Louis in 2015, we knew we wanted to move our family to the city… with our then 5-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son and immediately fell in love with our St. Louis neighborhood. The historic charm of the CWE architecture and the people in our community make this such a special place. St. Louis is such a vibrant art city and people clearly love and support the arts. There is always something new to view or engage with at our art museums, institutions and galleries.
Describe your current collection at Walker-Cunningham Fine Art. I’m currently featuring a solo exhibition of more than 35 works by St. Louis native Daniel Jefferson… Daniel is an established figure in the St. Louis street art scene working under the moniker Bipolar Holiday. He began at the age of 3 making art alongside his father – artist Melvin Jefferson – and has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. His current series, Kyoto Girls, shown here, draws on his reverence for early Japanese woodblock prints. Paintings on view include a full wall mural and framed works on canvas and on paper. Daniel’s pieces are characterized by bold imagery, strong lines and intense color, along
with layering and mark-making using various media – acrylic, spray paint, marker, wax pencil, “diamond dust” and collage. The work is viewable online at walkercunningham.com. What are your goals for the gallery’s future? Whether I am working with a new or established collector or sourcing for a public collection or mounting a pop-up exhibit, I will always endeavor to be a positive force in connecting people with the art they love and can learn from... I believe there is tremendous value in being in the presence of art. Walker-Cunningham Fine Art, 617-448-1428, walkercunningham.com LadueNews.com | September 18, 2020 51

L
aumeier Sculpture Park recently launched “From Periphery to Center,” an exuberant new free exhibition commissioned from artist Odili Donald Odita. The exhibition, which opened Aug. 8, runs till Dec. 20 in a unique tandem presentation. More specifically, because it seeks “to forge connections between north and south St. Louis County,” according to a press release from Laumeier, the exhibition involves two sites: Laumeier proper, the 105-acre open-air gem in Sunset Hills, and 7-acre Jeske Sculpture Park in Ferguson. Odita’s “From Periphery to Center” takes the form of flags, whose varicolored vivacity may well recall Chinese tangrams, the object mechanism of a kaleidoscope or particularly kicky stained glass. Five flags grace Laumeier, while 10 grace Jeske. Laumeier’s press release describes the exhibition as “a meditation on similarities and difference, bonds and divisions” and notes that the artist took particular interest “in the conversations on inequity and social justice that ensued after the [Aug. 9, 2014] killing of Michael Brown by police, which brought local conditions and events to national and international attention.” It continues that with “From Periphery to Center,” the artist wishes “to address the idea that concepts of periphery and center are subjective and changing, and that events do not cease to make [a] significant impact when they occur outside of a broader horizon of attention.” Laumeier curator Dana Turkovic details what inspired the exhibition from Odita (born in Nigeria but nowadays based in Philadelphia). “Odili was part of an exhibition I curated last year, but he has shown in St. Louis a number of times, so he has a familiarity with our city,” Turkovic states. “While doing research for that exhibition, I became aware of a piece he did for [the citywide contemporary art triennial] Prospect New Orleans working with the flags. “I liked how Odili’s project there looked at geography and place with an expansive view, asking the audience to travel to each site. I also responded to

the translation of his approach to painting to a public art practice, using his research to create a composition that was layered with meaning and about history and place.” Turkovic also explains the commission’s evolution: “I think Odili really expanded the project in terms of the amount of flags he designed for the project, and he really thought through each design, both conceptually and formally” – especially the flags’ placement relative to other works and the surrounding landscape, for a potentially new and surprising experience of a given space. Otherwise, Turkovic discusses a visitor’s potential “takeaway” from the exhibition, aesthetically or otherwise, and enthuses about collaborating with Jeske. “I think with Odili’s work for ‘From Periphery to Center,’ one of his hopes – and ours – is that each installation within the context of a sculpture park can be a place for conversation and dialogue,” she says. “Odili’s combination of abstraction and public sculpture sets the tone for universal interpretation. “Also, it’s exciting to work with another park with a similar mission and to expand the footprint of an exhibition. The collaboration with Jeske invites and encourages visitors to experience the [metro area] in a much bigger way and to travel to areas they may not have been to or haven’t been to in a long time.” Finally, given that the pandemic has caused many area residents to limit travel, Turkovic calls this “the perfect time to get to know your own city and to really explore it geographically and historically,” adding that, in that respect, “Odili’s multisite installation becomes about much more than the objects themselves.” Laumeier Sculpture Park, 12580 Rott Road, St. Louis, 314-615-5278, laumeier.org Jeske Sculpture Park, 211 Thoroughman Ave., Ferguson, 314-521-4661, jeskesculpturepark.com
