EDITOR WE’VE BEEN SURPRISED WITH A SPATE OF EXCEPTIONALLY

good weather this week, and I’m among the many who can’t wait for fall to get into full swing. It’s a perfect time to enjoy the leaves while walking the trails at Forest Park or around the lake at Creve Coeur Park, and there’s so much happening around town that it’s hard to decide where to venture next. One of the most exciting things about fall is that many of our arts organizations are launching their new seasons, from theater to the visual arts – and let’s not forget about music. This week, we sit down with Gene Dobbs Bradford, president and CEO of Jazz St. Louis (p 72). The organization’s Jazz at the Bistro is opening its 20th anniversary season in the recently remodeled Harold and Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in Grand Center, a fantastic space that Dobbs Bradford hopes will attract both seasoned jazz lovers and newcomers to the art. See you at the show!

The ball begins at the stroke of 6 p.m. with cocktails, followed by an elegant dinner and performances on the magnificent Peabody Opera House stage. The Sklar brothers, Randy and Jason, who have appeared on hit shows including Netflix’s What Are We Talking About?, ESPN’s Cheap Seats, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital, will bring the funny as emcees and entertainment for the special event. “They are absolutely hysterical,” Hunter says, adding that the duo is among a number of The Magic House’s celebrity fans, some of

whom will be highlighted in a video at the ball. The “big kid” fun will continue as speed painter Tim Decker takes the stage. “He performs live-action painting onstage,” Hunter says. “There are three blank canvases, some music and paint, and the three surprise pieces he creates will be auctioned off.” Additional live auction items will include a private sleepover at The Magic House, an in-home sushi-rolling party, a trip to New York City to see Andy Cohen live and more surprise trips. Guests also will have the chance to touch “the magic ball,” a mini-version of The Magic House’s electrostatic generator that makes your hair stand on end. The crowdpleasing favorite was the inspiration for the event’s title, explains Beth Fitzgerald, president of The Magic House. Following the formal evening of fun for adults, the Sklar brothers will keep the party rolling for guests who opt to attend the VIP After-Party. Event proceeds will benefit hands-on exhibits throughout The Magic House, as well as support the children’s museum’s core initiative to provide free educational and outreach programs to kids and families in need, Hunter tells us. “One of our key pillars is access for all – to ensure all kids, regardless of abilities and backgrounds – have the opportunity to visit The Magic House,” Fitzgerald explains. “We provide free educational resources to schools for students, as well as their families.” Last year, 80,000 guests visited the museum free-of-charge, she says. The funds also will help the children’s museum continue to reach out to kids and families in rural areas with its Magic on the Move vans, which bring interactive activities and S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and math) programs into schools,

hospitals and libraries, transforming the facilities into Magic House spaces for the day. “We feel strongly that children are more engaged in learning when they have an interactive approach,” Fitzgerald notes. “With so many kids leading virtual lives these days, we still think that play is important, and family engagement is important.” Inside The Magic House, event dollars will support the Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit. Opening Oct. 10, the interactive exhibition will bring to life The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other popular children’s books by author Eric Carle. In addition, the museum is renovating its 30-year-old “A Little Bit of Magic” preschool play space, which will reopen Dec. 20 with new S.T.E.A.M. exhibits. Organizers of The Magic Ball aim for the event to be the largest-ever Magic House gala, with 500 guests, and a goal of raising more than $350,000. The event is sponsored by Centene Charitable Foundation, August A. Busch III Charitable Trust, Krey Distributing Co., St. Louis Rams, Emerson, Gene and Judy Toombs, Edward Jones and Monsanto. 314-822-8900 or visit magichouse.org.

Heavenly Hydrangeas

‌R

By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess

ight now, I am in the middle of the greenest, lushest garden at the peak of hydrangea season. I’m in Kinsale, on the southern Irish coast, and the hydrangeas are absolutely fabulous! Gardening jealousy surges in my chest as the mild climate and daily rain showers here keep plants fresh and bursting. The flowers are the brightest and fullest I have ever seen. Big-leaf hydrangeas and lacecaps are in their most magnificent peak bloom, in pastel shades of ivory, powder pink and little-boy blue, and complemented with deep, rich rose and darker hues in every shade of blue. Hydrangea species popular in our area include the big-leaved H. macrophyla, the taller, woody H. paniculata, the native H. arborescens and the vining cultivar of H. anomala subsp. petiolaris, Miranda. Mophead macrophyla hydrangeas are probably the most familiar types, with large, fleshy leaves and big, rounded flower heads. Favored by florists, much breeding and selection has occurred in this group giving a wide range of sizes, shapes and bloom habits. Endless Summer is a choice cultivar with repeat bloom. Look for BloomStruck and Decatur Blue. For a striking white eye in a rose border, try Marissa. For a white-edged flower, Sensation is a great choice.

OW BEL

Lacecaps macrophylas offer elegant flattened umbels with tiny fertile flowers in the center, surrounded by a ring of showy sterile florets on the perimeter. Pheasant is one of my favorites in the garden, but new cultivars are coming along so quickly I haven’t had the chance to trial them all. Michael Dirr recently released Twist and Shout, the only reblooming lacecap. It also offers stunning fall foliage. For summer leaf color, try Hatsushimo, a speckle-variegated Japanese lacecap that looks like a cream shrub spattered with green paint. Other fancy-leaved forms include the rim-variegated Maculata and lime-green cultivars Yofloma and Lemon Daddy. Special foliage forms show best against a dark green conifer backdrop. All macrophyla flower colors are heavily influenced by soil pH. Add lime for stronger reds or aluminum sulfate for bluer blues. Pee Gee is the trade name given to Hydrangea paniculata subsp. grandiflora, which is considered the granddaddy of them all. In cultivation for generations, other selections have been introduced over time, including Tardiva, which blooms very late in the summer. Limelight is a newer variety with heavyflowered, tapered trusses. Native oak leaf hydrangeas (H. quercifolia) are perfect for our shaded woodland gardens. Woody, with tapered

trusses, the flowers hold well into the autumn, turning into silvery paper puffs floating on scarlet fall foliage. Newer cultivars include Snow Queen, the red-hued Ruby Slippers and the dwarf Munchkin. For H. arborescens cultivars, consider the original Annabelle or more recent selections like Bella Anna, Invincibelle Spirit, Hayes Starburst and the new Haas Halo. The wild natives may be seen at Shaw Nature Reserve or along the rock ledges of the Al Foster Trail along the Meramec River. Make room for one of these special selections that are very well suited to our St. Louis gardens!

Q&A with Susan Kime

SUSAN KIME PHOTO BY SARAH CONARD, LINK AUCTION GALLERIES PHOTO COURTESY OF LINK AUCTION GALLERIES

By Nancy Robinson Susan Kime may be the ultimate St. Louis insider. A fine art expert and trusted appraiser, Kime has been privy to our city’s most important estates and collections of fine art, antiques and collectibles for two decades. Most recently, Kime helped launch Link Auction Galleries, which builds on the longstanding St. Louis auction house tradition started in 1830 by Ben J. Selkirk and Sons. We recently caught up Kime to learn out more about Link and the importance of the St. Louis market as a resource for local, national and international buyers. How did Link Auction Galleries come to be? To tell the story of Link, I need to start with Bruce Selkirk. I began working for him in 1994 and have worked in the auction industry in St. Louis ever since. Bruce’s company changed ownership several times, and I was among a core group of appraisers who stayed together through all of the changes. In the winter of 2013, the company’s financial difficulties became apparent to us. Our group realized that we couldn’t continue to accept property, but none of us wanted to leave behind the business and the people we had come to know and love. At first, the idea of starting our own auction house was nothing more than a pleasant “what if?” But then we started talking more seriously, whispers became formal business plans, we found the perfect space – and suddenly, we had formed our own business: Link Auction Galleries. Where is Link located? We’re located in the former St. John’s United Methodist Church in the Central West End, at the corner of Washington Place and Kingshighway Boulevard, known to locals as the “holy corners.” The building, a 1902 Greek Revival-

Exterior view of Link Auction Galleries, located at 5000 Washington Place in the Central West End. The 1902 Greek Revival style landmark was designed by Theodore Link and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

in the auction business, I’ve been routinely impressed by the variety to be found in the St. Louis market. St. Louis collectors are extremely diverse, and this makes my job interesting. My colleagues and I have worked with collections of Old Master paintings and drawings, LadueNews.com | SEPTEMBER 18, 2015

I’ve gotten to know leading experts in all categories from across the country, and I often call or email them with questions about property I am researching. The immediate access to experts for some really obscure objects has been hugely beneficial to me. Do you know when Antiques Roadshow will be returning to St. Louis? As a rule, they will not return to a city for five years, so St. Louis is due for a repeat. The cities they select are kept secret until they are announced to the public, and this will be early next year. I’m already planning the party at Link, if and when the day comes.

rare 18th-century English porcelain, Aboriginal art, 1980s East Village art, Mid-Century Modern furniture and decorative art, modern Inuit art, Americana, modern Irish paintings, Chinese bronzes and Japanese prints, just to name a few. How does St. Louis compare to other markets in terms of important collections and estates? There’s a reason there are so many auction houses and representatives from national firms in St. Louis: We have great property. In my role with Antiques Roadshow, I’ve visited cities across the country, and we rank highly in terms of the quality of collections. Antiques dealers say it’s harder and harder to find quality antiques in Europe because it’s been “over shopped.” Is this also happening in St. Louis? I feel the opposite is true here in St. Louis. There’s great property here and at a time when many people are downsizing. I’m constantly amazed at the important collections that I encounter. It doesn’t seem it will be drying up anytime soon. What are some of your most notable sales? In our first year, we set numerous auction records for paintings by regional artists. The cover lot from our first auction, a painting by Joseph Vorst, and two other works by Vorst in the same auction are currently the top three auction prices for this artist. We were fortunate to handle property from the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in April. This consisted of paintings executed in the 1950s and ’60s by St. Louisans and other notable American artists. Many of the works from this collection set auction records, and have raised the bar for some familiar St. Louis artists like William Fett, Fred Conway and Stanley Tasker. In 2007, I worked on a painting by the American artist Frederic Church, titled “The Mill.” It was executed in 1852, and depicts an old mill house in the Catskills. My colleagues and I sold this painting at auction to a buyer in New York for $2.3 million. It came from a St. Louis collection. When Link first opened, I handled a private sale of an important painting by Maxfield Parrish, again from a St. Louis collection, to a man in Springfield, Ill. We sold this painting for $150,000. We’d be remiss if we didn’t ask about your work on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow. What can you

Local art defines the mission – and rotating exhibitions – at SOHA Studio + Gallery

S

he calls it, “Female made, on the south side.” Local artist Julie Malone has created a successful gallery that’s gaining plenty of buzz. With 2016 already booked and handfuls of accolades for the space, there’s no shortage of talent in the gallery run by a three-woman team. Meet SOHA Studio + Gallery. But the story doesn’t begin in the gallery – it started years ago, with Malone’s obsession with art. Originally from Kansas City, she says she fell in love with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Fine Art, noting her father took her there every Sunday. “We had our favorite works of art, but it was one painting that truly inspired me as a young artist: Richard Diebenkorn, ‘Interior with Book, 1959,’ she says. “There was something so freeing about the composition, and the colors were pure delight to me.” Her artistic addiction took her through “all the art classes and graphic design classes they would allow me to take” in high school, then to Central Missouri University, where she focused on studio painting, education and photography. She taught community college art classes in Washington state before moving to the Gateway City in 1996. Once in St. Louis, she worked as a designer with a flooring printing company, a job she describes as “interesting and technical” where she stared at Photoshop pixels. “I was always painting at home in my free time,” she explains, adding that after her first child was born she stopped working and continued painting. “In 2001, I was invited to exhibit at Houska Gallery in the Central West End. Charlie Houska took me under his wing and I quickly became a professional artist.” That roundabout path eventually landed Malone on Macklind Avenue in the Southampton neighborhood. A

family member of Malone’s and fellow artist, Liz Millikan, offered up studio space in 2010. The rundown building made of brick and cinder blocks was a far cry from the elegant space seen today. Malone’s sheer determination brought the building from Point A to Point B. “In college, I told everyone I would someday have a gallery, and I did it,” Malone says. “I put every penny I had into this place with the dream of having a studio connected to a gallery where local artists could show and sell their work.” The dream came to fruition when the space opened in May 2011. The first year, like with so many businesses, was rough, she says, but her determination never wavered. “Here we are, five years later – I have added a team of women to help make SOHA grow. It’s an honor to have Kathleen Dunne and Megan Rieke on the SOHA team. We are all three mothers and love the arts; we are also collectors.” Malone sings Rieke and Dunne’s praises, attributing much of SOHA’s recent success to their group dynamic. Rieke describes the collaboration as a coming together of like-minded creatives. “Their synergy bounces off the walls in the gallery, which creates a life-force like no other, because anyone who walks through those doors becomes a friend,” Rieke says of the others. “We’re dedicated to featuring fresh art by upcoming artists, as well as known artists in a relaxed environment, which makes you feel like you’re at a friend’s home looking at their art collection.” SOHA recognizes the intimidating aspect of art galleries, and addresses it head-on. “Julie, Megan and I believe art is for everyone, and work to make SOHA a casual and welcoming space,” Dunne says. “We are lucky to have a strong depth of involvement from many

different artists in the community, so our gallery is a great place to engage with and learn more about the local art scene.” Outside SOHA, Malone’s art will soon travel to another gallery – some even from the collections of clients – for her multi-month exhibit at The Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries. Her exhibit, “Luminous,” will be on display from Oct. 2 through Jan. 23. Additionally, 17 of her paintings will be available at the Houska Gallery through Sept. 26. While the styles of art, types of shows, and experience of artists at SOHA differs, one thing always stays the same: the gallery exclusively features local artists. The philosophy has paid off, as the gallery has already gained much local recognition for its work. Malone’s response to what the future holds? “We aren’t stopping any time soon.” 4915 Macklind Ave., 314-497-5202, sohastudioandgallery.com

40th birthday present, a Hermes Birkin bag. St. Louisans know Beasley-Jolly not just from the iconic store, but from society pages and fashion articles, both in St. Louis and around the country. For example, her work as a founding member of the Saint Louis Fashion Fund board of directors was noted just last month in the legendary Women’s Wear Daily. “It’s hard to believe that the Saint Louis Fashion Fund has only been around for a little over a year, but in that time they have showcased the talent of some of America’s best emerging designers, and this year will be no exception,” says Beasley-Jolly. “Overseeing the Caleres Emerging Designer award committee, it has always been my hope to also engage and support local talent and create an ecosystem that we can all benefit from – retailers, designers, manufacturers, etc.” The winner of this year’s $25,000 award will be announced Nov. 4 during Saint Louis Fashion Week.

he’s classic, with a twist – and she has the closet the masses lust for. Instead of being limited to a small nook in a bedroom, Tania Beasley-Jolly, marketing director of Saks Fifth Avenue St. Louis, has the sales floor of a department store. It’s the perfect scenario for the local fashionista who describes her personal style as “Jackie O. in biker boots.” When asked if she’s more of a shoe gal or a purse lover, Beasley-Jolly replies coyly with, “That’s like asking if I’m a diamonds or a pearls gal...but I’d have to say handbags. Fortunately, I can go and ‘play’ with both on the selling floor at Saks every day. My associates know if I say ‘uh-oh,’ it typically means that I have to have it!” She lists her Ann Demeulemeester riding boots as a can’t-live-without piece, along with red lips. Best Face Forward

The Season’s Hottest Accessory By Amy Koehler ‌If you have been watching the runway, you know that the season’s biggest accessory is glowing skin. Designers, from Dolce & Gabbana and Emilio Pucci to Gucci, are all about enhancing the skin’s natural beauty this season. The days of heavy foundations and overly contoured faces are long gone. So how do you achieve this look if you have imperfections?

Perfecting YOUR skin It all starts with good nutrition. Add a daily avocado to your diet; it’s high in healthy fat to moisturize from the inside out. Next, make sure your skin care is addressing the issues that concern you, whether it’s loss of moisture, dark spots or other troublesome issues. Use a skin perfector to blur imperfections and treat while you wear it. Try Dior’s Dream Skin ($115, available at Dillard’s and Saks Fifth Avenue). For a primer, try Lancome’s La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer ($42, available at Dillard’s or Saks). It creates a smooth, radiant finish with a longlasting formula.

Choosing foundation Make sure the color suits you. There is nothing natural about orange foundation! Apply as little foundation as possible to still meet your coverage needs, and use a

beauty blender to help melt the foundation into your skin, rather than having the foundation sit on top of your skin (Sephora original beautyblender, $20). Don’t be afraid to ask the experts – your favorite beauty counter would love to assist you in color-matching to get the look just right.

Complete your look For day, you can add a blush in a warm tone and a sheer wash of bronze shadow. Really play up the lashes and define your brows. Next, you need a soft neutral lip shade. Just one to two shades darker than your lip color is perfect for this look. Voila! Your look is complete, and in no time, your skin will be your best accessory.

Fashion On the Go By Amanda Dahl

Mobile boutiques bring style to the streets of St. Louis

T

he ever-evolving nature of fashion has yielded a new trend: the mobile boutique. Fashion trucks first gained speed in cities along the West Coast, and in the past few years they’ve hit the streets of St. Louis. Opening a brick-and-mortar shop isn’t without its challenges, but getting behind the wheel of a fashion truck

is a very different endeavor. From navigating the legality of where the truck can park to alerting customers to the truck’s changing schedule, owners like Emily Ponath of Rack + Clutch have had to field day-to-day difficulties as they arise. “You can’t just park wherever you want,” Ponath says. “We aren’t licensed like the food trucks. You have to be allowed onto private property. Your sales, and where you’re going to set up, aren’t guaranteed that day.” Laura Farquhar of The Fashion Lane says she launched her fashion truck to adapt to her on-thego lifestyle. After quitting her corporate job, she combined her business expertise and love for fashion to turn The Fashion Lane into a successful venture that allows her more freedom to spend time with her family. The Fashion Lane offers trendy clothing items with versatility so women can build on the basics. With a price-point of $100 or less, the response continues to be positive. Currently, Farquhar says her biggest challenge in operating a mobile business is updating customers on where to find The Fashion Lane. “Traffic is my one challenge: Getting the word out,

and getting people to understand what it is,” Farquhar says. “Their default has been hesitation. ‘I’m not sure you can park here…’ Once you try it though, what’s not to like? It’s validating to see my business model taking off with other mobile boutiques popping up in St. Louis.” Paperdolls, a brick-and-mortar boutique with several locations across the St. Louis area, launched a fashion van to allow the brand to expand its customer base. The 1960s van is decked out with retro phrases and style, which mirrors the feeling of the shops and brand. “As it’s the ’60s-style Scooby Doo van, we painted the entire thing with ’60s sayings,” says paperdolls marketing manager Alise Glenn. “It’s mobile, but an extension of the store. We represent the store – and everything it’s about.” Glenn says she and the paperdolls team have been impressed by the attention the van receives. “Even guys come up, saying it’s the coolest, and wanting to know more about the van,” she says. Before launching Rack + Clutch, Ponath previously worked at a brick-and-mortar boutique, and knows

first-hand the differences between a mobile shop and having a permanent base. As a result of the economic downturn, the shop where she worked closed for business, and Ponath decided that launching a fashion truck would be her next career move. Today, Rack + Clutch carries a mix of clothing items intended to appeal to a broad audience, from the season’s mostcoveted items to its most practical ones. Prices are reasonable, mostly less than $100. “In a [brick-and-mortar] store, your inventory comes in, and you get it ready for the day while there are no customers,” Ponath says. “With a truck, you have to prep it before you even go [out for the day], which means we have to end our day at 2 p.m. to get everything ready.” Ponath notes that the truck’s limited hours have led her to park in neighborhoods where foot traffic is heaviest. “We stay open during the busiest times of the day,” Ponath says. “People know they have to get there then – and they do.” Meanwhile, the launch of Miki’s Closest was inspired by the late Miki Zimring, a fashionable

philanthropist who worked to expand the goodwill mission of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis. Dana Hutchinson, associate manager of the group’s ScholarShop in Webster Groves, describes the fashion truck’s muse. “People get to learn more about who she was: this incredible philanthropist and businesswoman with an amazing sense of style,” Hutchinson says. “We’re so appreciative of the Zimring family for letting us use her as an inspiration.” The boutique-on-wheels offers hand-selected merchandise from the large supply of donations found at its nonprofit store, ScholarShop, including men’s clothing. The truck caters its inventory based on where it’s parked, from outdoor festivals to corporate lunch hours. From special events to everyday street-side shopping in some of St. Louis’ most eclectic neighborhoods, fashion trucks make it easy to get up to speed with gorgeous and unique clothing and accessories.

J

aleh Coiffure, a full-service salon, recently moved from its longtime home at 10283 Clayton Road in the Ladue West Shopping Center to modern, new digs at 10433 Clayton Road in Frontenac. Owner Jaleh Parvin, a stylist with more than 40 years of experience and training in Europe and the U.S., worked at the salon’s former location for eight years before taking the helm and running the shop for 17 years. Ready for a fresh new start for her business, she found the perfect place in a new space in Frontenac. Through the years, Jaleh has built her business on putting clients first. “My clients are No. 1. I want them to be comfortable in my shop.” She believes the new salon will achieve just that, with a welcoming open-concept designed by More for Less Remodeling,

and featuring vaulted ceilings and the same highquality services clients have depended on for decades. “Most of my clients have come to me for 40 plus years,” she says. In addition to accommodating her longtime clients, Jaleh also hopes the remodeled shop will attract new clientele. With the move also comes more space for new employees. Jaleh is looking to add a stylist and a manicurist to her experienced team. Her current four-person staff has worked with her for decades. “They are more than employees,” she says. “They are like my family.” The salon offers haircuts, color and highlights, as well as perms, with product lines ranging from Matrix to Redken. Clients also can be pampered with manicures and pedicures in a wide variety of OPI polish

hues, as well as long-lasting, chip-proof gel polish. Skin care also is a top priority at the salon, with facials and makeup application available. The salon’s veteran team specializes in updos and makeup for special occasions, including weddings, bridal showers, engagement parties, birthday celebrations and proms. Bridal parties are encouraged to book several months in advance. “We have had bridal groups of six or seven come in to have their hair, makeup and nails done,” Jaleh says. Jaleh believes the salon will be a positive new start for her business and grow her family of clientele. “My clients are very special people – every one of them,” she says. “I love to make them happy.” 10433 Clayton Road, 314-993-2789, 314-477-9495

Michael and Sandra Beaird of Chesterfield are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Michelle, to David Anthony, son of Joseph and Nicolina Amoroso of Rutherford, New Jersey. The two plan to marry this fall in St. Louis. The bride-to-be attended Westminster Christian Academy, where she graduated in 2003. She earned her bachelor’s degree in finance and banking from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2007, followed by an MBA in finance from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2012. Amanda now works as a senior pricing and contracting analyst for Otsuka America Pharmaceutical. The future groom attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, where he graduated in 2004. He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Rutgers University in 2008, as well as an MBA in management and operations in 2014 from the University of Scranton. David is an associate manager of contract management and compliance at Novo Nordisk. The couple first met in 2012, while working for Forest Laboratories in New York City. On their two-year anniversary, David surprised Amanda by recreating their first date. The grand finale came when the couple stopped under the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center, and David dropped to one knee and proposed. The couple plan to honeymoon in Saint Lucia, and will reside in Princeton, New Jersey.

Jim and Jan Rohlfing of Augusta are thrilled to announce that their daughter, Kaitlin Elizabeth, is getting married to Joseph (Joey) Lane, son of Steve and Julie Mathes of Ladue. The two shall wed on Sept. 26, 2015, at Westwood Country Club in St. Louis. The future groom graduated in 2005 from John Burroughs School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009, graduating as a member of the Sigma Delta Tau Fraternity. Joey later attended the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, earning a juris doctorate in 2013. He works beside his father in the residential real estate business. The bride-to-be graduated in 2003 from Incarnate Word Academy. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2007, graduating as a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity. She currently is director of client relations at InterLab USA. After college, Kaitlin worked at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, the school Joey later attended. By this time, Kaitlin was off exploring Southeast Asia. The couple didn’t meet until returning to St. Louis. After an awkward first date, they took a chance on another and have been inseparable since. The couple are headed to Argentina for their honeymoon, with plans to reside in University City.

COLLIER halia Collier is in some very rare company in St. Louis. She owns a professional sports franchise. Collier is the general manager and owner of the St. Louis Surge women’s basketball team of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL). She says her local counterparts, Bill DeWitt Jr. of the St. Louis Cardinals and Tom Stillman of the St. Louis Blues, have gone out of their way to reach out to her and she even considers them mentors in her quest to make St. Louis a better sports town and even a better place to live. “It’s great to get the support of the top teams in your city; they think it’s really cool,” she says. Not surprisingly, Stan Kroenke of the St. Louis Rams has yet to introduce himself, but I digress. Collier is only 27 years old, but her accomplishments are already pretty remarkable. She bought the Surge in 2011 and since then they’ve been to the final four of the WBCBL every year. In 2014 they won the championship. This season they fell short in the finals. Her team plays its home games at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where this past season it set league attendance records. But to be honest, until just before I met Collier I didn’t even know St. Louis had a professional women’s basketball team. I told her I thought pro hoops died here the day “Marvelous” Marvin Barnes and the Spirits folded back in ’76. She hears that kind of thing a lot, but it only inspires her. “It makes me realize we’ve got to do a better job,” she says. “We’re combining our grassroots efforts with a marketing budget that’s going in next year.” With a new marketing budget of around $10,000, I have no doubt she’ll make the most of it – Collier is one of the most driven and inspired young professionals I’ve met. “I was instilled with the entrepreneurial spirit by my parents at a young age,” she says. “I live by the saying, ‘If better is possible, then good isn’t good enough.’ ” Collier says her mother, Tonya, was a teacher and owned a fragrance company, and her father, William, retired from the GM plant and now plays in a jazz band. Collier’s parents motivated her to dream big and work hard, but when she told her family that she was buying a sports team, some family members thought she had “lost her mind.” All Collier saw was opportunity. “I’ve got real skin in the game, and when people meet me, they realize my passion is legit,” she says. “My 90- to 100-hour weeks are real, and that’s why we’re seeing progress.” Collier graduated from Fort Zumwalt South High School, where she set school records as a basketball star. She played college ball at Columbia College and finished her playing career at Missouri Baptist University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in communications in 2010. She requires all Surge players to have college degrees. The requirement is part of her mission to build a team of self-empowered role models. Collier believes all kids need to be empowered to be successful, and that sports and education is the way to impart it. “Statistics show that 96 percent of women with executive jobs played sports; it builds leaders,” she says. And building up people in St. Louis is a part of what motivates Collier. “We are leaders in the community who happen to play basketball,” she says. “When kids come up to get an autograph, they should know that one player is an accountant at Boeing, two work in biotech, one is an engineer. That’s the bigger message; you can truly do anything and still pursue your passion, that’s how you inspire and motivate people, by being leaders.” Another one of Collier’s favorite games is chess – she thinks all kids should learn how to play it because it teaches you how to plan your next moves, like the ones she’s

I was instilled with the entrepreneurial spirit by my parents at a young age. I live by the saying, ‘If better is possible, then good isn’t good enough.’ planning for her team. “This is a long game of chess,” she says. “Right now we’re still positioning our pawns; we’re still early in the game.” She hints that her checkmate move would be to bring a major league Women’s National Basketball Association (WBNA) team to St. Louis. If she can land a WBNA franchise, then she’d really be rubbing elbows with the big guys; DeWitt, Stillman and Collier, pro team owners, working toward the future in St. Louis. I guess three out of four ain’t bad, but again, I digress.

r. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one D of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping

patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).

NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electroimpedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.

Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.

Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.

Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

Two Men and a Garden— Hot Mango Salsa

‌W

Hyken’s HOMEWORK ‌T

By Russell Hyken

By Diane Alt

hen Two Men and a Garden’s own garden can’t keep up with demand, the growing company is ardent to source locally grown produce for its wide variety of salsas. Admittedly, the Midwest does not offer the best climate for mango growth, but owners and “men in the garden” Joel Austin and John Sikorski (along with sales and distribution manager Brett Tintera) still use the best mangoes available for their very popular Hot Mango Salsa, which unites the zesty flavor of hand-peeled, chopped tomato and heat of habañero peppers with the refreshing flavor of fresh mangoes. Upon first taste, rich mango sweetness hits the tastebuds, followed by the slow, satisfying burn of habañero. But do not be afraid: The flavors are fantastic and the heat, palatable. Every jar of salsa made by Austin and Sikorski contains ingredients grown in their garden – hence the company name. ‌The Hot Mango Salsa is made year-round and is available at many local retail outlets, including Viviano’s Festa Italiano, The Smokehouse Market Annie’s Gunn’s, at Lucky’s Market and at most Schnucks stores in West County.

he lazy days of August have morphed into early-morning schedules and after-school homework. With structure settling into normalcy, nightly dinner discussions start to revolve around comments such as “my teacher plays favorites,” “he is mean” or “she is a crab.” Some kids may wrongly perceive their teacher doesn’t like them. While it is possible that a teacher may not like your child, it is also very unlikely. Initially, many students struggle with classroom changes. Last year’s teacher was warm and fuzzy, and this year’s teacher is… well, different. It also may be that your child does not like what the teacher is asking of him, or his seat assignment. Listen and empathize before forming an opinion. As more time passes, however, if concerns continue to be voiced, contact the teacher and have a collaborative conversation about classroom conduct. It is acceptable to share your child’s feelings, but ask the teacher for assistance rather than make accusatory claims. Most teachers will have insight and all will appreciate parental support. If the situation endures, it may be time to visit with an administrator. Stay focused on your child and avoid placing others on the defensive by reporting your concerns and discussing previously used strategies. The goal is for your child to have the best year possible, and it is the principal’s job to make that happen. Teachers go through years of training, schooling and hard work; most are passionate about their careers and enjoy being around children. Communication is key to creating a positive teacher-student relationship. Prior to going into private practice as a psychotherapist and learning disabilities specialist, Russell Hyken, Ph.D., Ed.S, M.A., LPC, NCC, worked for more than 15 years as an English teacher, school counselor, psychological examiner and school administrator. THINKER

Tennis? Anyone? ‌I think one of the greatest keys to happiness in life is knowing one’s limitations. The positive way to look at that is to play to your strengths. I am a writer. I’m a pretty good cook. I’ve been known to be funny on occasion, and in a pinch I can explain the themes and symbolism in the books on a ninth-grade summer reading list. Those are my strengths. My limitations? I am not organized, detail-oriented, perky, efficient or organized. Not even a little. And that’s OK. We all have things at which we excel and things we should avoid. Everything was fine. I was sailing along, playing to my strengths, taking my place in the grand order of things. So why, why did I have to screw with that? Why, when Cranky asked me to be the “team mom” for her tennis team, did I accept? Not only was I venturing into to unknown territory; I was also tempting fate, thumbing my nose at the universe that told me time and time again to stick with what I know.

Perhaps I’m being a bit dramatic. Being the tennis team mom isn’t rocket science. I bring water and granola bars. Organize a sleepover. And yet, this most fundamental of tasks seems out of my reach. When Cranky, Whiny and Punch were in elementary school, I hated the mom who brought the perfect snacks: The impeccably dressed, freshly showered and made-up, fresh from pilates, I’m training for a triathlon, toting a tray of piping-hot muffins made with organic fruit and no nuts (allergies) mother. I used to envision myself choking her as she flipped through a binder of activities for the upcoming year, her pearls breaking and falling one by one over the color-coded pages. Now, I would do anything to have that woman by my side. I would be her supplicant, and apologize for every scowl I ever gave, if she would just produce that binder and work her organizational magic. I’ll muddle through. I enlisted the help of a

Yes, I may have to run to Schnucks for ice, or cut fruit (Word of advice: For many, many reasons, do not bring a whole watermelon as a team snack), but that’s OK. I think the real question is why. Why did I feel the need to venture out of my comfort zone and take on this effort? Sure, it’s not like I enlisted in the National Guard, but still, it’s an added obligation. The answer is pretty simple: I did it because I’m sentimental. Cranky is a senior and this is one of my last chances to be part of her high school experience. So if it means I get to be a part of something with my daughter, I will haul a couple of cases of bottled water to the tennis courts each week. Happily. Oh, and granola bars. I think there also may be some sort of team banquet. Who knows? I’m sure there’s someone responsible for that.

Attorneys with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri offer critical legal and social services to victims of domestic violence

H

olly Yoakum’s friends and family could see it even before she could. As a young law student, her volunteer work with domestic violence survivors clearly showed the passion she was developing for victims’ legal needs. Yoakum wanted to be a litigator in a big-time law firm, and that’s just how she began her legal career. Even then, however, Yoakum remained connected to domestic violence cases, working pro bono on orders of protection for victims. “I was thrilled to take advantage of that opportunity, and it helped me refocus what I wanted to be doing,” she says. “It was a winding road to get to this specific position, but it was a very natural fit for me.” In 2009, Yoakum began working with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) and is now a staff attorney for the Lasting Solutions Family Law Program, which helps domestic or sexual violence victims find their way through daunting legal and social services to a future free of abuse. She was recently named one of Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s Up and Coming Lawyers of 2015 and will be honored at an event on Oct. 2. “I love the work I do,” she says. “I love the ability we have to help our clients.” Victims of domestic violence are often isolated by their abusers, trapped and without resources or hope. LSEM provides legal assistance to low-income individuals in a 21-county region. Programs cover everything from elder care (the

Elder Law Program) to legal support for minors with special educational needs (Children’s Legal Alliance Program). The Lasting Solutions Family Law Program exclusively serves individuals who are victims of domestic or sexual violence. “Because we deal with domestic and sexual violence on a daily basis, we have a unique perspective on how those issues impact things like custody determinations,” explains Jason Dodson, managing attorney for Lasting Solutions. “We are able to offer social work services to our clients to help us address their needs holistically, and we don’t charge our clients fees for our representation at all. Most of our clients have a family household net income that is at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level.” With four full-time attorneys and one part-time attorney, Lasting Solutions handles orders of protection, custody issues and distribution of property and maintenance (alimony) in divorce cases. A full-time social worker and two paralegals also work with Lasting Solutions cases, and Dodson notes that volunteer attorneys and law students also contribute their services. Having a social worker on staff is crucial, he adds, because as victims flee abuse they need support and assistance beyond the courts. “The lawyers and the social worker collaborate frequently to discuss case management and evaluate the kinds of resources the clients need to be connected with,” he says. “Working with the social worker allows us to provide truly holistic representation to our clients.” Beyond the staff services available, Lasting Solutions partners with a number of area agencies, referring clients to safe shelters and organizations including the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Redevelopment Opportunities for Women, and the St. Louis County Domestic and Family Violence Council. “When we accept a client in Lasting Solutions, one of the first things we do

s is try to gauge their immediate needs, beginning with safety,” Dodson says. “This happens with a discussion with our clients, and everyone in the unit can be involved in safety planning, including attorneys, social workers and paralegals. Of course, we assess the legal needs with the clients, determine their goals and discuss a plan for trying to achieve their goals. Sometimes we’re the first people who’ve sat and listened to someone who has experienced years of abuse.” Because most of their clients are suffering the physical and emotional damage of abuse, Dodson notes that the entire staff seeks to provide “empowerment and affirmation.” Once in the program, clients receive services until legal judgments are entered and all associated matters are completed. “We have a huge demand for assistance so we commit our resources to helping those with active legal issues,” he says. “However, we encourage clients to contact us after their cases have concluded if there are enforcement problems or substantial changes that may require a return to court.” In working with other agencies and through professional contacts and word-ofmouth, clients are referred to Lasting Solutions from many corners. Usually, to be eligible for the program, a client’s annual household income (for a client with three children, for example) would not exceed $29,813. “We have a huge demand for our services and so we serve clients in two different ways,” Dodson explains. “First, for in-court, intensive representation, we close approximately 240 cases each year. For those cases where we cannot provide that level of representation because of resources, we close approximately 260 additional cases each year. For the cases we closed in 2014, we served a total of

1,026 people, including clients and their household members.” Dodson adds that work with domestic violence victims has long been a focus for LSEM. In fact, more than 30 years ago, LSEM lawyers wrote the Adult Abuse Act that created orders of n in Missouri, he notes. protection M notes “The Lasting Solutions Program at LSEM grew out of that history and tradition, becoming a unit that does only family-law work for survivors of domestic violence,” he continues. “The goals of the program are to obtain legal remedies and judicial orders that end the violence in our clients’ lives. These include orders to keep them safe, orders to provide financial support, and orders that provide stability and safety for their children. The law has a number of powerful remedies that can really give survivors of domestic abuse a chance to live independently of their abusers and realize a life of freedom.” Through her work with LSEM, Yoakum says she’s gained a new appreciation for the problems low-income people encounter in finding affordable, available and safe child care, especially when working low-wage jobs that may not conform to a regular 9-to-5 schedule. “I’m not a particularly cheesy person, and it might sound cheesy, but really and truly, we are taking people who often come to us at their lowest point, possibly physically harmed, almost always mentally and emotionally harmed, and without a lot of resources; they often see no hope,” she says. “Sitting down with clients for the first time and constructing solutions with them, the client can start to pick up the pieces. The best part of the work is being able to take their burdens and help them start to regain confidence and hope.”

Talk to the ProFessioNals A

t Hais, Hais & Goldberger, professionalism is a priority. The field of law can be a rocky one, but for Sam and Susan Hais, maintaining a level of class and respect is of utmost importance. Their firm practices solely family law, and they are committed to providing the highest standard of service in this challenging aspect of law. “People ask us all the time if we do just family law and divorce cases, and we say yes. It’s important to focus on one thing and do it well,” Sam says. Hais, Hais & Goldberger consists of seven attorneys with a combined 100-plus years of experience. The attorneys understand that divorce cases can be emotional and often difficult, which is why they put so much emphasis on taking the high road. Susan says, “It’s important for prospective clients who are interviewing lawyers to pay close attention to whether a lawyer has personally insulted another lawyer. It’s not only impolite – it also could approach an ethical violation.” When choosing a lawyer, Sam says the questions you should ask yourself are tied to the general observations you make about people on a day-to-day basis. “Is that person listening to you? Is that person offering suggestions only when they really know

what’s going on? Do they seem like a thoughtful person who listens to what you have to say and offer constructive comments?” These points, he says, can help you pick a lawyer who will represent your best interests in a respectful and constructive way. Their practice is set up to handle clients’ family law and divorce needs in a productive manner. The Haises pride themselves in not having a large-firm model and always try to adapt to the needs of their clients. “This model really works to our clients’ advantage,” Sam says. “If you concentrate in one area, all policies are geared toward facilitating to operate in a comfortable and effective manner.” Susan notes that because of this, they don’t have to compromise anything in their practice. “There’s not a day that goes by where somebody doesn’t thank me,” she says. The community has played a huge role in the success of their firm, and Sam says they’re grateful every day. “It’s been a great blessing in our lives to be able to be in so many situations where we can really help people. No amount of money can ever replace that.” When it all comes down to it, Hais, Hais & Goldberger is all about the Golden Rule. “Treat people well and like you’d want to be

Is expecting divorcing parties to settle quickly reasonable? St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

The belief of most in society is that divorce should be simplified. It should be a quick, simple, easy and inexpensive thing to do. Versus haggling over the household furniture, the cars and the house, most people think the parties should quickly be reasonable and end their case amicably. Of course, who would want a nasty divorce? Who would want it drawn out? Who would want to spend a lot of money in attorney’s fees? Who would want to put the case in the hands of the judge? Who would want a divorce to drag on months or years? The reality is no reasonable person would want this to happen. Reasonable people would want to end their case outside of court. Reasonable people wouldn’t want to put their lives in the hands of a judge who doesn’t know them. Reasonable people wouldn’t want to spend the money for lawyers. Reasonable people wouldn’t

want to put their family through a drawn out process. There is one problem that most people fail to consider. If parties were able to compromise to settle their divorce, wouldn’t they not be getting divorced in the first place? Don’t most people who stay married compromise? Isn’t compromise necessary for a marriage to last? Isn’t compromise a required ingredient for a long, sustained marriage? If this is true, and parties are not able to compromise to keep their marriage together, isn’t it unreasonable to believe that most people will be able to settle their divorce quickly? If parties were able to settle their divorce quickly, couldn’t they agree on issues in which they disagree such that they could avoid a divorce? Shouldn’t they be able to go to counseling or otherwise resolve their differences short of a divorce?

The reality is no rational person wants a drawn out divorce. At the same time, settlement is not easy for those who cannot agree to such a level that they decide to get divorced. At the heart of a lot of divorce is the inability of parties to agree. This is what inevitably leads to lots of divorces. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. T

he Restaurant at The Cheshire and Basso get a lot of well-deserved recognition for their quality menus and inviting ambiance. But don’t forget the venerable boutique hotel’s third eatery, the Fox and Hounds Tavern, which has been serving up food and drink for decades. It’s the perfect place to get into a British state of mind before catching a performance of cheeky English comedy “The Full Monty” at STAGES St. Louis in Kirkwood. Fox and Hounds is designed to evoke a great room in an English manor house, a place where the lord of the manor might kick back with friends and some refreshments after a particularly rousing hunt. Paintings of faithful dogs and noble steeds adorn

the walls, and the rough-hewn timbers and blazing hearth lend a cozy feel to the place. Seating is a mix of booths, tables and some plush armchairs and couches. The concise menu at Fox and Hounds features an array of small bites and a few entrée-sized offerings, depending on just how peckish you are. On our visit, the Nottingham Cheese & Salumi ($14) was a solid way to start the evening. It featured an array of local cured meats, artisan cheeses and some grapes and slivers of apricot, which brought a bit of sweetness and contrast to the plate. The Coventry Fish & Chips ($15) was a small plate version of this pub favorite, two pieces of mild white fish deep fried in a golden, crispy batter and served up with a small side of seasoned chips (fries, for the uninitiated). It was an

experience akin to eating at a London takeaway stand, minus the newspaper. Still hungry? The Cheshire Burger ($12) should take care of whatever remains of your appetite. This hearty burger is built around a hefty patty consisting of brisket, sirloin and chuck. For maximum flavor, try it on the rare side. It’s then topped with some tangy English cheddar and a couple of strips of bacon. This meaty masterpiece is augmented with Medart’s sauce, a Cheshire staple. The burger also comes with a more substantial order of those tasty chips. The bar at Fox and Hounds can turn out most any cocktail that strikes your fancy. However, the UK vibe here begs for some authentic pub libations. Try a fine scotch – the selection includes popular blends like

Dewars to superior single malts like Lagavulin 16year ($30). More of a beer fan? A properly poured pint of Smithwicks ($6) awaits you. One of the advantages of being located in a hotel is that the hours are extensive. Fox and Hounds is open for business Monday through Saturday from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sundays from 3 p.m. until midnight. Reservations aren’t required; just pop in. Parking for Fox and Hounds is via valet. Be advised, though, that the valets are also parking cars for hotel guests as well as for patrons of the Cheshire’s other eateries, so there may be a bit of a wait depending on what time you visit. 6300 Clayton Road, 314-647-7300, cheshirestl.com

hen a steel mill closes down in Buffalo, it affects not only the livelihoods of several men, but also their self-respect and sense of identity. As they struggle with unemployment, they also chafe at the success enjoyed by the Chippendales’ type of male strippers at a local club patronized by their wives and other women. This gives one of the guys, Jerry Lukowski, an idea. He and his pals could make some money and regain some of their self-worth by staging a show that will one-up those male dancers by having its performers go ‘the full monty,’ baring all for their art. It might even bring in enough cash to help Jerry maintain visiting rights with his ex-wife to see his son Nathan, the person closest to his heart. Highlights: STAGES St. Louis, which presented a popular production of “The Full Monty” in its 2007 season, has brought the crowd-pleaser back to its fans with a highly energized and entertaining rendition to close out its 29th season with a sizzle. Other Info: With a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally (“Ragtime,” “Master Class,” “Love! Valor! Compassion!”), plus music and lyrics by David Yazbek (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”), “The Full Monty” picked up 10 Tony Award nominations in 2000, with Yazbek winning for Best Score. Artistic director Michael Hamilton capitalizes on the show’s strengths with a briskly paced, classy interpretation that accentuates the talents of his cast. While the story seems a bit tired in my viewing of a third production, there’s no denying the caliber of the performances Hamilton culls from his smart and savvy players. A number of the players make the most of their chances to shine in numbers focused on their individual characters, while contributing just as convincingly as ensemble members backing up a primary character. Brent Michael Diroma heads the cast as Jerry, a wellmeaning but blundering sort who badly wants his son to love him despite his shortcomings. There’s wonderful chemistry between Diroma and Cole Hoefferle as the 32-year-old Jerry and his 14-year-old son Nathan, although the maturity levels of the two often seem reversed. Young Hoefferle is a constant delight with his comic talents, indicative of the bright future he surely has. Diroma can belt out a tune with the best of them and dances up a storm as well, evidenced early in the production with the number Scrap with his colleagues in an abandoned factory or just as effectively in the Act I closer, “Michael Jordan’s Ball,” in which he shows his fellow strippers how to ‘perform’ by emulating the moves on a basketball court. The others in Jerry’s entourage include his best friend, flabby and flustered Dave Bukatinsky, played in supreme deadpan style by Todd Horman, who has

more than a passing resemblance to Jackie Gleason in his uniform in the show finale. Milton Craig Nealy makes the most of one of the show’s most hilarious numbers as Noah “Horse” Simmons, displaying moves aplenty on the “Big Black Man” number, choreographed flamboyantly by Stephen Bourneuf. Erik Keiser is fine as the quiet mama’s boy Malcolm MacGregor, whose 30 years of living have been controlled by his invalid mother. Keiser plays Malcolm’s repressed nature to the hilt with a series of priceless facial gestures. Adam Shonkwiler also is amusing as Ethan, an addle-brained worker determined to emulate Donald O’Connor’s walk up a wall from “Singin’ in the Rain” despite the multiple concussions that result. James Ludwig completes the sextet of strippers as Harold, a former executive at the mill disliked by the guys until he reveals that he himself was laid off six months earlier, a fact still unknown to his zesty and expensive wife, Vicki. Ludwig’s low-key approach to Harold perfectly contrasts with the explosive sexiness and bon vivant style of Julie Cardia as good-time Vicki, the queen of the Arthur Murray dance studio in another excellent Bourneuf dance. STAGES favorite Zoe Vonder Haar displays her expert comic timing as the boys’ droll and free-wheeling piano accompanist Jeanette, a veteran of eight marriages who shapes the lads’ routine into a show biz extravaganza. “The Full Monty” has plenty of lively numbers, clever lyrics and juicy characters for actors to inhabit with glee, as evidenced by the warm reception it received on opening night. Company: STAGES St. Louis Venue: Reim Theatre, Kirkwood Civic Center, 111 S. Geyer Road Dates: Through Oct. 4 Tickets: $20-$57; contact 314-821-2407 or stagesstlouis.org Rating: A 4 on a scale of 1-to-5.

Art Speak

Q&A

with

Jenny Donaldson of Art Unleashed By Brittany Nay

‌Art has a new name in Chesterfield. The former Chesterfield Arts organization has relaunched as Art Unleashed. The organization aims to enrich the lives of students of all ages and abilities through visual arts. LN spoke with Jenny Donaldson, director of education, to learn more about how the organization is providing art education opportunities in the community to cultivate creative self-expression, improve artistic abilities and enhance self-esteem. What does your new mission mean for Chesterfield and the St. Louis region? It is providing a place where students of any age can come to a safe and welcoming environment to unleash their creativity and discover the artist within them. How is your organization implementing arts education in the community? We are offering a variety of classes at our location, 13379 Olive Blvd., from the preschool level through adults. During the summer, we offer weeklong summer camps for kids. We also are now offering classes off-site at different locations, such as Sunrise Senior Living and Briarcrest Estates, to make art programs more accessible to the people in our community. We also have worked with OASIS and Friendship Village this summer to offer an art history lecture and follow-up art activity at Friendship Village. OASIS also will be holding classes at our facility this fall. Describe your organization’s programs and classes. Our fall and spring programs offer art classes that meet once a week for four-, six- or eight-week sessions. The kids’ classes are theme-based, which allows students to create multiple pieces using different materials, while taking a more in-depth approach for a particular subject matter. Some examples are “Underwater Adventures,” “Colorful Creations” and “Fantastic Faces.” We also have a program called Kaleidoscope, designed for kids with intellectual and development disabilities who are looking for more one-on-one instruction. For adults, our classes focus on a particular medium, like pottery or acrylic painting. Our most popular class for kids and adults is pottery. We have 11 pottery wheels and two kilns to keep up with the demand. For busy adults, we offer one-night workshops like “Doodling” and “Cobweb-Felted Scarves.” How are people responding to your organization’s rebranding? Parents have told us how much their kids have enjoyed our summer camps and the opportunity they had to be creative and let their imaginations run. How are the new programs impacting the community? Since opening in June, we have held three student shows in our new space. Our students have been so excited to see their artwork in a frame hanging on the wall and show their parents and friends. Displaying their work for others to see has really given them a sense of accomplishment and purpose for creating their work. 636-627-7735, artunleashed.org

Call of the Wild

‌If you saw “All is Lost” the nearly silent, avant garde movie where Robert Redford plays a lone sailor, cast adrift after a collision, then you know Redford can do almost anything (or nothing) and capture an audience. He is just shy of 80 and is still the charismatic, handsome leading man. Once again, Redford chooses a script that is fairly, I don’t know what the right word is, tame? Uneventful? Dull? Nevertheless, the A-list cast delivers. Redford plays Bill Bryson, a writer who has recently returned to the States with his wife, Catherine (Emma Thompson). After the death of a friend, Bryson discovers his proximity to the Appalachian Trail and tells Catherine he intends to hike the 2,000-plus mile route. After some mild protestations from Catherine, Bill sets out to find a traveling companion. He finally gets an old friend, Steven (Nick Nolte), who is battling some demons of his own, to agree and off they go. Now, if you’ve seen “Wild” with Reese Witherspoon or “Into the Wild” with Emil Hirsch (or if you are of slightly above average intelligence), you can predict the rest of the story. Like the trail itself, the film is rocky and seems to go on forever. As beautiful, witty and serene as this story of self-discovery is, and as effortlessly as the veteran stars pull it off, I can’t help but hope that Redford will take on a project with a bit more meat on the bone. It’s a 6.

MOVIE PREVIEW: “PAWN SACRIFICE”

Chess Gambit

‌Coming soon is “Pawn Sacrifice,” an indie film starring Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard about the most famous and politically charged chess match in history. During the height of the Cold War, American chess legend Bobby Fischer (Maguire) challenged Russian chess champion Boris Spassky (Schreiber) to a match. The film chronicles this duel between chess legends and the surrounding political turmoil between two rival superpowers. Fischer himself was a troubled man, his genius skirting the edges of mental illness. At the heart of the film is Fischer’s tightrope walk between brilliance and madness and his personal struggles as an average kid from Brooklyn whose incredible ability captured the attention of the world. This film is followed by a bit of controversy. The biggest gripe seems to be that Maguire is woefully miscast in the starring role. Critics complain that Maguire is not only physically wrong for the role – he is nearly half a foot shorter than the lanky, imposing Fischer – but also lacks the acting chops to pull it off. There is also some controversy regarding the depiction of Fischer’s mental state; however, the subject is fascinating and the rest of the cast is undeniably strong.

n the early 1990s, the late Barbara Rose introduced Just Jazz to St. Louisans at the downtown Hotel Majestic. In August 1995, the performance program moved to the Grand Center Arts District, where Jazz at the Bistro has continued entertaining audiences ever since with live jazz by national and international artists. Now in its 20th season, Jazz at the Bistro continues to present this distinctly American melting pot of rhythms and harmonies in one of the genre’s premier venues. In 1999, Gene Dobbs Bradford became president and CEO of the nonprofit organization that encompasses the Jazz at the Bistro concert series. In 2006, the organization was rebranded as Jazz St. Louis, which better encompassed the variety of community outreach and educational programs offered by the organization in addition to the Jazz at the Bistro series. In May of 2014, the organization launched a $10 million campaign to redesign and expand the Jazz St. Louis Washington Avenue building. This month marks the first full season in the organization’s new space, which, as Dobbs Bradford notes, provides the acoustic and visual excellence the audience deserves to best enjoy the performance.

In the Ferring Jazz Bistro, part of the new Harold and Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in Grand Center, the setting remains intimate and comfortable. “We opened last October, but this year our subscription series that starts in September will be the first time we’ve had a full season of operations in the building,” he says.

We’ve got this

wonderful new venue that is really one of the top five jazz venues in the world, right here in our community. - GENE DOBBS BRADFORD Dobbs Bradford points out that the redesign features a stage closer to the center of the room, allowing audience members to be closer to the performers. “We also did a lot of upgrades to the acoustics,” he says. “We put in a lot of acoustic treatments that really help the audience and the musicians who play on the stage to enjoy the

facilities to the fullest. And the interior design by Jimmy Jamieson (principal of Jamieson Design) is stunning.” Combined, the new staging, acoustics and design features perfectly showcase “the fine art form of jazz,” he says. “It’s something that would be an appealing venue even if you’re not a jazz fan. It’s a perfect way to be introduced to jazz.” For its 20th anniversary season, Jazz at the Bistro has a lineup that both honors its history and looks to the future. A number of performers are returning favorites, while others are new to the series. “It’s a great mix,” Dobbs Bradford says. “We’ve been trying for years to get Dee Dee Bridgewater here. Having the venue helps to attract artists of her caliber.” Bridgewater is a Tony- and Grammy-winning performer known for hosting the National Public Radio program “JazzSet,” which aired until October 2014. She’ll be performing at Jazz at the Bistro in March 2016 with trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans 7. Dobbs Bradford cites, the organization’s founder’s legacy of “taking good care of the musicians who come to perform” when reflecting on how Jazz at the Bistro has gained its national reputation for excellence. “They don’t have to worry about anything other than making the music,” he says. Beyond performing, artists appreciate Jazz

Every artist on the Jazz at the Bistro subscription series participates in some educational or community programming as a part of their contract. “This is something that the musicians really enjoy doing because they realize it’s helping to build future audiences for jazz, and it’s not something that they do when they visit other venues,” Dobbs Bradford says. Jazz St. Louis’ educational programs span elementary school through high school. “The musicians go into schools to perform as part of our Emerson Jazz in the Schools program,” Dobbs Bradford says. “They do master classes and workshops and in-school performances. We also have musicians who come work with students in our JazzU program, which is an audition program for students from around the greater St. Louis area who meet weekly to get instruction from some of the finest educators in jazz in the area and also have special visits from our guests.” About 60 middle- and high-school students currently participate in JazzU. Dobbs Bradford notes that Jazz St. Louis takes a two-pronged approach to education: appreciation and performance training. Some programs focus solely on exposure, such as the Youth Concerts performed at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. The concerts feature a New York-based group, JazzReach, and provide an audio-visual presentation accompanied by a live jazz quintet. Dobbs Bradford wants people to know that Jazz at the Bistro is better than ever, and the 20th anniversary season offers something for everyone. “We’ve got this wonderful new venue that is really one of the top five jazz venues in the world, right here in our community,” he says. “And we’ve got a fantastic season. I hope people will come out and enjoy some of the best music you’re going to hear in St. Louis.” For the season’s full schedule, more information on Jazz at the Bistro or to order tickets, visit jazzstl.org. 3536 Washington Ave., 314-571-6000, jazzstl.org

Q&A

with Jeremy Davenport

S

t. Louis native Jeremy Davenport comes by his musical talents honestly. His mother was a music educator for almost 50 years, and his father played with the St. Louis Symphony for four decades. Davenport, a jazz vocalist and trumpeter, performs regularly at The Davenport Lounge in the Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans and is a perennial performer at Jazz at the Bistro. With your own venue in New Orleans, how often do you get back to play in St. Louis? It really depends. Definitely once a year. My show at Jazz at the Bistro has become an annual tradition. It gives me a chance to come home. In the past, I’ve done other shows in St. Louis, but I really like to focus on my Thanksgiving weekend at Jazz at the Bistro. Historically, Thanksgiving weekend is a tricky time to try to do anything because people are traveling. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving in show business is a tough weekend. But since I grew up in University City, I’ve luckily got a lot of people who come out, and it’s become a homecoming- or reunion-type show. My mom and dad still live in U. City, and friends and family from over the years come out to see me. It’s a treat and an honor. I don’t know how many people have this experience, where they can come back home and perform at a world-class performance venue. What do you like best about the new Jazz at the Bistro venue? Last year was my first time performing in the updated venue. The paint was still wet. I’ve been blessed to play all over the world in some of the most wellknown concert venues, and this venue is state-of-the-art. You’re not going to find a more thoughtful live performance venue anywhere. They really did their homework. In every room you go into, you have challenges if the room wasn’t specifically built out for live music, including my club in New Orleans. They didn’t build the club to have music – we brought music into an existing space. All the other spaces in St. Louis were bringing music into an existing space. Jazz at the Bistro is built around the performance venue, and you feel that immediately. That makes it totally different. What would you most like our readers to know about you and your upcoming performance? I hope people who wouldn’t otherwise catch a jazz show would come out to see me and give it a shot. Come downtown and spend an evening. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. The tricky thing about jazz music is that you don’t hear it daily on the radio or TV. It’s still a very niche kind of thing, so any time we can get exposure among people who haven’t caught this type of show, we hope they give us a shot.

ROBERT B. REICH

SAVING CAPITALISM: FOR THE MANY, NOT THE FEW Perhaps no one is better acquainted with the intersection of finance and politics than Reich, and now he reveals the cycles of power and influence that have perpetuated a new American oligarchy, a shrinking middle class, and the greatest income inequality and wealth disparity in 80 years. Saving Capitalism is a passionate yet practical, sweeping yet minutely argued, mythshattering breakdown of what’s wrong with our political-economic system and what it will take to fix it.
