“We have such an incredibly talented, warm and funny faculty and staff here,” says Nikki Doughty, COO of City Academy. “Our students get to be part of a rich learning environment.” With the debut of enhanced classrooms and a brand-new Early Childhood Center, City Academy will expand and strengthen its mission of providing high-quality, scholarship-based independent education to underserved populations in St. Louis. The school, which will now be able to educate students from age 3 through sixth grade, will host a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday, Sept. 26, to celebrate the opening of these new spaces. EDITOR A WARM BUBBLE BATH, CANDLES AND A LITTLE BIT OF SILENCE can do wonders for the mind and body after a long day. It can be difficult to find time for relaxing moments amid the everyday hustle and bustle, but perhaps it would be easier if your master suite included a spalike retreat. For this week’s edition, Ladue News digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter spoke to local experts at both Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath and Mosby Building Arts about how their teams create spa-inspired spaces in homes across St. Louis. Starting on p. 30, we hope that you enjoy their expert design tips and that this story inspires you to add a little rejuvenation to your routine. Also in this edition, we hope you enjoy learning about Lola Jean’s Giveback Coffee, a nonprofit café serving espresso, tea and beautiful baked goodies that benefits local organizations. Starting on p. 85, Ladue News contributing writer Drew Gieseke speaks to Lola Jean’s founder, chef Russell Ping, about the inspiration for the café, how the nonprofit functions, its array of offerings and more. We hope you enjoy learning about this thoughtful concept and even consider stopping in for a treat – after all, who can say no to an espresso and a gooey butter cookie? All the best,
Alecia Humphreys

hile working with the Mathews-dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club in the late 1990s, first as a volunteer tutor and then as the director of education, don danforth III began envisioning a new kind of educational institution, a school that would bring first-rate academics to underserved populations in the St. Louis area. “the idea was to create an elementary school that would provide exceptional instruction to students who typically don’t have access to high-quality education,” danforth shares. “I wanted to create a top-tier, scholarship-based independent school – the kind of school that I would want for my own children.” together with duncan Marshall, a fellow Mathews-dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club supporter, danforth realized that ambition with the opening of City academy in 1999. then housed within the Mathews-dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club complex, the school launched with just 42 students in junior kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade. Now in its twentieth academic year, City academy has its own campus in North St. Louis and is set to debut enhanced learning spaces and a brand-new early Childhood Center. Now serving 202 children from junior kindergarten through sixth grade, the school has grown significantly over the years. the new addition will allow City academy to add a 3-year-old program and to increase its student population to 250 scholars. One of the school’s hallmarks is its unique funding structure. traditional independent schools typically derive between 70 and 80 percent of their operating budgets from tuition. at City academy, every student receives a scholarship, which means that tuition amounts to less than 20 percent of the school’s revenue. Because of this model, the school relies on the generosity of the community, from individual donors to corporations and foundations, to fund scholarships and support day-today operations. and, it’s no surprise that the St. Louis community has responded so magnanimously, generating more than $2 million in annual support and fueling a successful $10 million endowment initiative in 2017, plus a $12 million capital campaign in 2018. that’s because community is exactly what City academy strives to create for its students and their families every day. Because City academy does not operate a bus system, most parents drop off their children in the morning and walk inside the school for pickup in the afternoon. “We get to see every single family, every day,” stresses principal Milton Mitchell. “that really contributes to a deep sense of community, and allows for numerous touchpoints between parents and teachers throughout the week.” Maintaining these bonds has been a key consideration for leadership as the school expands. “We asked ourselves how we could grow in an impactful way, without hurting the school’s mission and what makes it so special,” says COO Nikki doughty. “Parents will come to us and tell us what an incredible collaborative spirit they’ve found at City academy. We want to ensure that this growth doesn’t diminish the culture that we have here.” the early Childhood Center and newly-improved classrooms enable City academy to engage a greater number of students at an earlier age, but in smaller classes and with spaces better tailored to specific age groups and areas of study. “Our science and SteaM [science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics] curricula, paired with our language arts program, are critical to what we do,” declares doughty. “the renovation has allowed us to continue our innovative work and to create guided spaces that will propel learning forward.” One such area is the Bayer MakerSpace, which is outfitted with a 3d printer and other tools that promote hands-on learning across subjects. there are also science and language arts labs dedicated to individual grades. although City academy graduates students in the sixth grade, the school boasts a robust alumni program. City academy works diligently to maintain a support system for them, ensuring that graduates thrive in high school, college and beyond. In turn, alumni frequently come back to their alma mater to share their successes. More recently, 199 alumni returned to help rally capital campaign contributions. that graduates feel so strongly about City academy is a testament to the power of its commitment and attention to each individual student. “Our students encourage us to be better,” states doughty. “For us, it’s about turning them into critical thinkers, leaders and global citizens, and pushing everyone to be their best self.” City Academy, 4175 N. Kingshighway Blvd., St. Louis, 314-382-0085, cityacademyschool.org

You may not be able to see it, but when it comes to arthritis, the pain is there, resting just below the surface. Millions are affected by joint diseases that significantly impact their everyday living. “People tend to not take arthritis as seriously as it is,” says Cheri Fitts, executive director of the Arthritis Foundation in Missouri. “It affects people of all ages, and can damage joints or even growth in young ones.” Learn how this nonprofit organization seeks to improve the lives of those affected by this all too common ailment. A
common affliction, arthritis affects many but is still understood by few. Not limited by age, sex or race, it impacts ordinary people, from your elderly neighbor to your young, athletic nephew. Arthritis can impact everyday living. Many people with arthritis have chronic pain, which can affect their mental outlook and physical abilities. With that, there is the limitation of not being able to do simple things, like combing your hair or stepping into a larger car. The Arthritis Foundation seeks to advance medical treatments, advocate for access to healthcare and medications, and support those who suffer from the disease within their local communities. It is because of this work that teenagers like Jake Morris can live a normal, happy childhood. In his freshman year, Morris suffered from immense pain and was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Feeling miserable and sidelined, he faced a difficult high school experience. Today, thanks to medical care and the support of the Arthritis Foundation, he is an active high school senior who participates in football, baseball and track – and no longer misses out. The organization’s online patient tools include exercise and food programs, which are tailored to each individual’s level of pain and lifestyle. These tools also offer information on insurance coverage and medication to simplify the complex medical issues
24
that individuals with arthritis often encounter. Other valuable tools include a resource finder, a local support network that meets monthly and a national helpline, staffed with social workers, which is available 24/7 to address patient needs and concerns. The nonprofit organization seeks to assist people with conquering everyday battles. Join its efforts at the 38th annual Silver Ball on Saturday, Dec. 8, at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. “It’s going to be a memorable evening,” promises Sherrie Wehner, who, along with her husband, Bruce, co-chairs the event. “We begin with a cocktail hour and silent auction, then dinner and dancing. The Ritz always provides an excellent dinner, and the live and silent auctions will include unique items and experiences. Cindy Preszler and Mike Roberts will again serve as emcees. It promises to be another unforgettable evening.” For seven decades, the Arthritis Foundation has led the fight to advance scientific discovery for better treatments and a cure for all types of arthritis. With the community’s help, the nonprofit organization will continue to help St. Louis-area adults and children , like Morris, to live normal, happy lives and to be able to do all the things they love. Boom Year for Basil E
By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess
very garden has its ups and downs. For example, the brutal cold snap last winter killed all but one of my new asparagus plants – not mulched as deeply needed – thus, a new planting opportunity was created. The asparagus plants were replaced with a new strategy for deer-avoidance: hairy-looking, smelly herbs! This year, my herb garden expanded greatly with the addition of extra basil, parsley and dill. More interesting selections planted were both summer and winter savory, sweet marjoram, curry leaf, horehound, borage, Roman chamomile and, as we all need it, more thyme (six varieties, in fact). None of this interested the deer, but oh, my, did other damaging grazers come along. In the garden, no two years are ever the same. This year, the cold spring started our tomatoes off poorly, and the intense heat of July caused massive bud abortion/the hindrance of flowering. By the end of August, some nice green tomatoes were finally visible, only to disappear overnight to a voracious groundhog. The only satisfactory crop of fruits this year were from the ‘Sun Gold’ cherry tomatoes in pots on the highest, sunniest deck, and they were knocked back hard by tomato hornworms that invaded while I was out of town. These intriguing giant green caterpillars are best held captive and given to a child (in a jar) with wheat germ and tomato leaves, as they quickly illustrate their lifecycle, pupating and emerging as stunningly beautiful hawkmoths. Since I didn’t catch the hornworms in time, like many other tomato gardeners this year, I was buying my slicers at the market in August. The lack of tomatoes led, of course, to a bumper crop of basil. Without the usual onslaught of tomatoes with which to pair them, the basil grew into massive bushes. I learned a new trick for preserving it for pesto this year: Blanch the basil in boiling water just a minute or so, drain, chill and freeze. It retains a much fresher (and more appealing) green even after several months of storage. French sorrel gets the same treatment and is a welcome guest at the holiday table in a vibrant emerald sauce for fish or a luxurious winter soup. I’ve never seen it cut for sale in local markets, so if you like lemony flavors, try growing this easy-to-manage perennial at home. Look for small pots of it in local nurseries next spring. Typically, I plant a lot of parsley for both the aforementioned pesto and the black swallowtails. People react differently to caterpillars eating up their garden, but the swallowtails are so majestic that I don’t mind buying a little new parsley in September. The dramatic green- and black-striped, yellow-spotted caterpillars definitely get the royal treatment compared to the nasty green hornworms. There is still time to add more new parsley plants to the border to replace the ones grazed down. My gardening style is “best practices,” rather than organic, but my very limited use of chemicals invites in many beautiful companion insects and pollinators. Even the evil hornworms offer profound beauty in their elegant celadon-green racing stripes.

fter a long day, wanting to come home to a sanctuarylike space is inevitable. For many, sinking into a warm bath with a book is as close to paradise as you can achieve on short notice. But maybe your master bath hasn’t been updated in 20 years, or it’s cluttered with everything from clothes to overflowing beauty products. No matter your current master bath situation, you’re only a few steps away from creating the oasis you deserve. Local experts Jenny Rausch of Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath and Tanya Yaacoub with Mosby Building Arts both recommend starting off by talking to a designer about what your vision of a retreat looks like. “It sounds simple, but the first step is finding out what ‘retreat/spa’ actually means or looks like to them,” Rausch says. “We get that request a lot, but it looks very different for everyone.” Yaacoub says that for some, that definition could mean a big air tub (using jets of air instead of a whirlpool, which uses jets of water), a large shower with a seat and multiple heads, or a full steam shower. Popular options she’s seeing right now include freestanding air tubs with lights and aromatherapy, radiant heated floors, heated towel bars and zero-entry showers, which are flush with the bathroom floor. She’s also seeing an increase in trough vanity sinks or floated vanities, along with gorgeous open-shelf storage for towels. Yaacoub says clients are also seeking to choose the locations of the shower controls and how they function to create a truly personalized space.

Although the options available depend on the client’s budget, Rausch says she’s seeing an increased interest in heated flooring. “It’s fairly simple to install, and it makes the most drastic impact on how the space feels,” she says. “Tile is interesting and bold and textural right now, but if you don’t heat it, it’s just cold!” Rausch also recommends leaving space for a chair or some sort of bench, noting that the fabric and open-floor space can drastically increase an area’s spalike feel. To create a relaxing environment with shades and hues, Rausch recommends soft, warm colors that subtly contrast. She notes that doing so showcases a look that’s cozy and clean. Yaacoub says she pulls colors into the design that are pleasing to the client – typically soft greens, blues and purples
that can help homeowners reduce stress. In terms of textures, Yaacoub takes into account what will help improve the overall experience of the space. “I like to mix a variety of textures to capitalize on the sensory experience,” Yaacoub says. “Maybe woodgrain tile on the floor with a gloss oversize subway wall tile and a honed- or suede-finish vanity top.” As in a professional spa, lighting plays a huge role in a space’s environment and feel. To help create the most relaxing and soothing atmosphere, the designers highlight multiple kinds of lighting that can soften a space while preserving its functionality. “A variety of ambient and task lighting is always desired for any functional space,” Yaacoub says. “For bathrooms, that is a variety of wall sconces and recessed canned lighting, all placed on dimmers, of course. With the addition of
the LED [light-emitting diode] strip and tape lights, we can now even illuminate inside cabinetry, adding yet another level of lighting for this spa experience.” Rausch has a simple philosophy when it comes to lighting: “Dimmers, dimmers, dimmers! Need I say more?” Overall, creating a spalike master bath stems from the clients’ preferences and what is soothing and calming to them. “If you like books and reading, create an area to display your favorite books,” Rausch says. “If your thing is music, make sure you build in a sound system. If the dog makes you feel better, make sure Fido has a nook with a spa bed, too.” Yaacoub suggests perusing Houzz and Pinterest to gather concept ideas before taking the next step. “Talk to your design professional, and don’t forget about audio,” she says. “Part of the spalike sensory experience is engaging all of the senses.” No matter your budget or space, taking into account factors like color, lighting and the features that make you feel at peace can help create a spalike space that’s welcoming and serene after a rough day. Step into your sanctuary, and soak it up. BEAUTY BUZZ
Rise and Rejuvenate
W
By Kimmie Gotch
ith too few hours in the day, it’s easy to fall short on sleep. However, we all like to look rested and rejuvenated before tackling the day. Here are some helpful tips to doing just that, even if you didn’t get the beauty sleep you truly desired. 1. Wash your face with cold water. Cold water assists truly waking up. Not only that, but it tightens your pores and helps reduce puffiness potentially occurring around your eyes and face. 2. Use an ice roller. An ice roller is a facial tool stored in the freezer, so in the morning, you can roll it all over your face, helping minimize puffiness. Focus the ice roller underneath your eyes and whatever other areas of your face are prone to puffiness. 3. Use under-eye patches. Say goodbye to puffy under-eyes after applying cooling under-eye patches. Leave the patches on for 10 to 20 minutes while you sip your morning coffee or tea. 4. Moisturize. Never skip your moisturizer –
54 September 21, 2018 | LadueNews.com
especially on days when you’re extra-sleepy! Many under-eye and face creams contain caffeine, and they should help wake up your skin. 5. Apply under-eye corrector. Before layering on concealer in an attempt to cover dark circles, apply an orange/salmon shade of under-eye corrector. This should counteract the potentially purple and blue shades under your eyes, while neutralizing your under-eye color. 6. Apply concealer and set it. Once you’ve neutralized the color of your under-eyes with a corrector, apply (as liberally as desired) concealer. Always blend it all the way. Once the concealer dries, set your under-eyes
with powder so your concealer won’t budge during the day. The powder also gives another layer of coverage. 7. Add a nude or white eyeliner to your waterline. Apply the rest of your makeup as usual, adding a nude or white eyeliner to your bottom waterline. This trick should make your eyes look wider and brighter. A waterline that’s extra-pink or red from fatigue is a dead giveaway that you didn’t get enough sleep. Test these tips out next time you find yourself tossing and turning all night. Try some or all of them, but just know that all of these tips together will make you look like you received the best rest of your life!

That’s when I found peace. It said to me that no matter what happens, God is there, and that’s the thing I trust the most, that’s what Jesus promises. trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.” I suppose sometimes, even the biggest zigzags in life don’t need any more explanation than that.

he Rev. Kelly Carlson’s journey through life has taken her down some improbable paths. “It’s been a zigzag, that’s for sure,” Carlson says, noting under her breath, “How did I do that?” The winding road brought her to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ladue, where today she’s the associate rector. Carlson grew up in Ballwin and Fenton, graduating from Eureka High School in 1983, continuing on to Westminster College. During her junior year, she was chosen to study in London and interned in the British Parliament. She graduated as Westminster’s valedictorian with a degree in political science, setting her sights on law school. She scored in the top 2 percent nationally on the Law School Admission Test and was accepted into nine of America’s top law schools, including Harvard. However, she chose Yale. Carlson graduated in the class of 1990 alongside U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and earned the prestigious title of editor-in-chief of the Yale Journal of International Law. From there, she went to work for the Department of State in Washington, D.C., as an attorney, working on international affairs. Within a few years, she was one of the lawyers overseeing the uranium supply for the United States, landing in St. Peter’s 10 years ago. St. Peter’s is the landmark church that sits reverently among the old oaks at the corner of Ladue and Warson roads. Its roots date back to 1868, and this year, the church celebrates its 150th anniversary. The flock of St. Peter’s has included some of the pillars of our community. In contrast to that of her church, Carlson’s lineage is a bit more down-to-earth. Her mom was a homemaker, and her dad was a mailman who drove a rural route, selling motor homes on the side. Although her familial background doesn’t explain how she got to where she is today, she knows a big zigzag came on Christmas morning of 1993, when her 21-year-old cousin, Drew, died in an apartment fire in Portland, Oregon. “Until then, I was kind of naïve, thinking if you’re a good person, and you love God, and you pray to God to take care of the people you love, then everything will be fine,” Carlson says. “Yet here is my cousin, dead on Christmas morning.” She left Washington and moved to be with her aunt and uncle in Portland. “It really sent me searching, and I started feeling that a career in law was not fulfilling,” she says. Carlson then went back to school to earn a master’s degree in arts and theology. One night, after an exhaustive day of studying, she says her soul-searching ended. “I laid my head on my desk, and I got an image in my mind,” Carlson says. “It was of my cousin’s bedroom, and there was fire, and he was in bed. Then Jesus comes in and carries him out. That’s when I found peace. It said to me that no matter what happens, God is there, and that’s the thing I trust the most, that’s what Jesus promises.” Carlson decided to join the clergy and went back to school, earning her Master of Divinity degree in Berkeley, California. She was ordained an Episcopal priest and says it was a random opening that landed her back in St. Louis and St. Peter’s. But after everything she’s told me about her journey I have an even harder time believing it was all just accidental. I’m still trying to understand how she got to where she is today. The reverend shrugs and says, “I wish I had a nice, neat, bowrapped answer.” Then I spot a framed inscription on the wall of her office, which reads: “May you

Hyken’s HOMEWORK
Typical or Troubled Teen?
I
recently had a family session with the parents of a struggling teen. Mom and dad were confused by their daughter’s recent behavior. She had always done well at school, but her home attitude had become increasingly difficult. Curfews were broken, chores were refused and homework was left unfinished. It is truly a challenge for parents to determine when their child has crossed the line from typical teen to truly troubled. After all, the high school years are complex, and understanding adolescent angst is a next to impossible task. Further complicating matters is that even “healthy” kids can have distressing thoughts, anxious moments and defiant attitudes. To determine if your emerging young adult is acting as if he or she has a clinical concern, consider the frequency, intensity and duration of the bothersome behaviors. Occasional and situational stress is developmentally appropriate. Being anxious before a major test is normal, but daily distress related to nightly homework
is excessive. When the negative behaviors occur with a high level of frequency, it is a sign that a greater issue may exist. Duration relates to a single incident that lasts longer than it should. Most kids feel momentary frustration, but they are able to move on quickly. Being upset because mom and dad refuse to allow their teen to attend a school-night concert is understandable. If, however, your child gets stuck when he or she does not get a desired outcome, that is a concern. Intensity is the “scary” factor. All kids argue with parents, and many will pout when they do not get their way. When the response, however, is disproportionate to the situation, there may be some underlying, ongoing emotional problem. Trust your parental instincts, and decide if your child’s reaction feels excessive. Teenagers are self-focused individuals searching for their own identity. Attitudes often change as a result of emerging independence, and teenage moodiness is part

of emotional development. The concerning behaviors, however, should decrease as your teen matures and becomes more self-confident. If you think your child is struggling – he or she probably is. Offer support and allow your teen the time and space needed to solve problems. If, however, your child’s mood lasts longer than it should, the attitude feels excessive, or the behavior occurs many times per week, it may be time to seek professional assistance. Don’t wait for your child to hit rock bottom. Even minor mental health issues can have long-lasting consequences. The earlier a problem is identified and addressed, the better chance one has to successfully and quickly recover.

Biermann, a sophomore, had a freshman campaign that established her as one of the region’s top young golfers, finishing fourth in the Class 2 state tournament with a 145 on rounds of 74 and 71. Before the state meet, she scored two victories: the Class 2 section with a 1-under 69 at Warrenton Golf Club and the District 3 championship with a 3-under 69 at The Links at Dardenne. Biermann earned a big victory by winning the American Junior Golf Association Junior Championship at The Legends Country Club in Eureka, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 213. The tournament’s 78 players include 15 committed to play collegiate golf, with five past AJGA champions in the field, one Rolex Junior All-American and 21 states and six countries represented. Biermann recorded nine birdies as she competed for her first AJGA title. It marked her third Junior Championship; last year, she placed seventh.

orsche owners and fans have long had a well-earned reputation as a fanatical bunch. In 1998, when the legendary Porsche 911 moved to water-cooling of its flat six engine from the prior air-cooled engine, you’d have thought Armageddon was upon us, judging by reactions. A similar reaction occurred when the 911 first employed electric steering. News of Porsche building an SUV, co-developed with Volkswagen no less, sent Porschephiles into a tizzy. Fortune, in a February 2011 story, proclaimed, “The idea of Porsche making an SUV is only slightly less jarring than Lafite Rothschild producing a blush wine, or Brioni applying its Italian stitching to a pair of overalls.” Then again, a similar and predictable response came in 2010 when Porsche launched its four-door sedan, the Panamera. Cats and dogs living together – to steal a shtick from the 1978-82 CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati – mass hysteria! But Porsche didn’t just survive these changes – it thrived. And just as the Cayenne SUV proved a Porsche can serve more than a singular purpose (and still feel like a Porsche), I set out to determine if its latest and greatest Panamera could pull off the same trick. It seems Americans will buy anything with a hatch, from SUVs to crossovers and seafaring vessels, and in recent years, the trend has continued into a resurgence of station wagons. In my opinion, that’s a positive development in stemming the tide of SUV domination. Because 10 inches of ground clearance is overkill for Saturday-morning shopping, wagons give the benefits of additional space and convenience combined with improved driving dynamics that come with a lower center of gravity. It took a couple of generations, but the stigma of the Griswolds’

wood-paneled wagon has faded to the point where manufacturers can test the waters. And this Sport Turismo Turbo is the baddest wagon on the planet today. The sublime 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 under the hood would feel at home in a million-dollar supercar. Packing the turbochargers between the engine’s V cylinder banks keeps plumbing shorter and exhaust gasses hotter for improved spool-up time. Other manufacturers have used the same trick, but in the Panamera, the result is more obvious than in any car I’ve driven. All 550 horsepower seemingly turn on with a twitch of the right foot, for Tesla-esque head-snapping ability. Engage Launch Control, a function used to achieve maximum acceleration from a standstill, and you’ll reach the mile-a-minute mark in 3 seconds flat. Stay in it past there, and you’ll catapult through a quarter of a mile in 11.3 seconds. Considering those numbers are happening in something weighing close to 4,500 pounds, it’s fair to say the claimed 550 horsepower and 567 foot-pounds of torque are conservative. On the Panamera, the extra juice from the 48-volt system allows implementation of a continuously variable, electronically controlled sway bar system. Sway bars have always been a double-edged sword. Stiffer means the car sits flatter in corners, keeping more of the tire contact patch on the road surface and improving grip, but at the cost of a bumpier ride over uneven surfaces. Softer results in a more compliant ride but a car that rolls through corners with minimal wobble. Porsche has given us the best of both. The dampers are also continuously variable and electronically controlled. There’s an electronically locking rear differential, also capable of torque vectoring, and of course electronically controlled. And
then there’s the steering: The front wheels are turned with electric motors programmed and controlled by a computer, but now the rear wheels are, as well. Yes, that means four-wheel steering. All of this reads like an exercise in digital excess, the fear being it would result in a lifeless, digital feeling. Happily, though, that’s not the case – for the most part. Bear in mind the Panamera Sport Turismo is quite a lump, and while Porsche hasn’t cracked how to rewrite the code of universal physics, it has managed to exploit a few loopholes. The amount of lateral grip created is staggering, and a car this size has no business rotating this eagerly through tight corners. Those industrious German engineers have been so busy, given us so many toys, I almost forgot to mention one of the Panamera’s coolest surprises: Push a button at the center of the driving-mode selector mounted on the steering wheel, and you engage SPORT Response. One press begins a 20-second countdown display in the center cluster where the suspension becomes tighter, the throttle response becomes sharper and the engine is allowed to overboost, thereby making more power – although Porsche isn’t telling us just how much extra. Why do we need to make more power? Because we can, that’s why. At first glance the Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo seems pointlessly excessive, in both price and complexity. Driving makes the case for its complexity – it’s simply able to do things no car could without all that complexity. It’s both a refined, comfortable cruiser and reality-defying performance thrill ride. Combine that with the cabin full of premium materials and impeccable finishes, and I can honestly say with a straight face I’m surprised it doesn’t cost more. Porsche has created a technological marvel that translates perfectly into the real world.

MiriaM
EDUCATION Spotlight By Emma Dent
MiSSiON PrOFiLE
Founded in 1910, Miriam has long been dedicated to serving the St. Louis community. During the past 60-plus years, Miriam has established schools and programs that engage students with unique learning needs.
“W
e’re proud to be the most comprehensive resource for families with students who need a different approach to learning,” declares Andrew Thorp, Miriam’s executive director. Falling under the Miriam umbrella are Miriam School, Miriam Learning Center and Miriam Academy, which collectively assist more than 1,000 children annually. Miriam recently celebrated the successful completion of its Learning to Succeed Campaign. Spearheaded by honorary co-chairs Michael and Noémi Neidorff, and Jerry and Peggy Ritter, the effort raised $10 million to further the organization’s mission and to extend its reach. One result of this initiative is Miriam School’s brand-new, $4 million middle school wing, which debuted earlier this month. Originally established in 1956 as an elementary school, Miriam School now educates students from prekindergarten through eighth grade, and has experienced surging interest in its middle school program in recent years. The new middle school wing adds 12,000 square feet of learning space to the school’s campus in Webster Groves, and includes five larger classrooms, plus wider hallways and locker areas. An atrium now separates the middle school area from the rest of the school, providing students a more independent environment that anticipates the high school years to come. Miriam’s Learning to Succeed Campaign also yielded funds for the renovation and expansion of Miriam School’s existing classrooms. The school now boasts more space for instruction and one-on-one therapy, as well as a room devoted to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) learning, an enlarged occupational therapy room, and new media and faculty rooms. Although the academic year only just began, these improvements have already made quite the impression on the school community. “The students and their parents have simply been blown away by all of the changes,” raves Thorp. The capital campaign also generated a $3 million scholarship endowment and startup funds for the establishment of Miriam Academy, the region’s only private, nonsectarian high school for students with learning challenges. Located in West County, the school welcomed its inaugural class in 2016 and now numbers 50 students in ninth through 12th grades. In addition to these exciting changes, Miriam continues to operate Miriam Learning Center, which brings occupational and speech therapies, tutoring and testing services to area private and charter schools that may not otherwise have such resources. Launched in 2007, Miriam Learning Center is Miriam’s largest program, with 100 part-time faculty members supporting more than 1,000 students throughout St. Louis. On Sunday, Nov. 4, Miriam will welcome prospective students and their parents to both Miriam School and Miriam Academy for separate open house events. “As the school year rolls along and initial progress reports come in, parents may realize that their children require another approach to education,” advises Thorp. For those families and others, a visit to one of the upcoming open houses offers an invaluable opportunity to speak with current parents, teachers and therapists, and to determine if Miriam’s innovative methods are right for their children. “These are very intelligent children who just need a different environment,” maintains Thorp. “We have smaller class sizes and teachers and therapists who understand children’s needs.”

s its name suggests, Liliana’s Italian Kitchen, a casual restaurant that opened in Sappington in July, is serving homestyle Italian cooking. The eatery comes from husband and wife Tim and Kathy Pieri, who named the restaurant after their 13-year-old daughter. Tim Pieri brings 30 years of industry experience to the table, including co-owning Harry’s Restaurant & Bar, which closed in late 2016. Liliana’s Italian Kitchen fills the approximately 2,800-square-foot space previously occupied by Molldeli’s Delicatessen, which the Pieris purchased in June with the intention to convert into its current incarnation. Molldeli’s Delicatessen’s previous owner,

Brad Brockmeier, serves as Liliana’s Italian Kitchen’s general manager. “My main thing was just creating a casual place with great food at a great price that people could enjoy,” Tim Pieri says. “It’s very family-oriented.” The cozy space, which holds seats for 75 guests, received a coat of red paint, new furniture and classic décor from the Rat Pack era. A pickup window and delivery are also available for guests not looking to dine in. From the menu, guests can choose from appetizers such as crispy Parmesan wings, fried artichokes and toasted ravioli from Mama Toscano’s Ravioli on The Hill in St. Louis. Specialty pies include the Italiano Pizza with prosciutto, salami from St. Louis’ Volpi Foods, pastrami, roasted red peppers, fried spinach, fresh mozzarella, Italian seasonings and artichoke hearts. Another popular pick, the Meat Lover’s, comes with hamburger, crispy bacon, pepperoni and sausage from Mama Toscano’s Ravioli. All of these sound like incredible options before catching Evita from The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. For dessert, guests can choose from items such as house-made tiramisu, a family recipe for pumpkin cheesecake and Sia’s Italian Ice in Des Peres. Story: Teenager Eva Duarte dreams of leaving her impoverished life in the provincial town of Junin in Argentina for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. In 1934, she hitches her wagon to well-known singer Agustin Magaldi and is on her way to the fame and stardom she seeks. Through a succession of lovers, she develops a career in radio and the fledgling Argentine motion picture business. Eventually, she meets military leader Juan Perón, and they quickly develop a mutual attraction. Eva marries Perón, who becomes president of Argentina in 1946. Proclaiming herself a woman of the descamisados (literally “shirtless ones” – very poor individuals), Eva is committed to representing the Argentine people in a big way, embarking on a “Rainbow Tour” of Europe to meet with dignitaries and political leaders. While the Peróns publicly lead many charitable efforts, the couple also faces controversy and concern that they are siphoning money for their own benefit. As Eva contemplates her chances of becoming Perón’s vice presidential running mate against the resistance of Argentina’s military leaders, she fights a losing battle with the cancer that takes her life at age 33. Her death in 1952 is mourned by a million people who view her body lying in state. Efforts to raise money for a memorial monument founder, however, and her body, says her narrator nemesis Che, disappears “for 17 years.” Highlights: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis opens its 2018-19 season with a glorious version of the Lloyd Webber/Rice landmark musical about the power and allure of Eva Duarte Perón, the 20thcentury Argentinian celebrity and political leader who rode charisma from poverty to popular acclaim in her native country. Other Info: Lyricist Tim Rice first knew of Eva Perón from her image on Argentine stamps he collected in his childhood. After spending a year researching her life, he convinced composer Andrew Lloyd Webber to join him in creating a 1976 concept album titled Evita. That led to musical productions in London’s West End in 1978 and on Broadway in 1979, where it garnered seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book. Scintillating dance moves by Argentinian choreographer Gustavo Zajac, in consort with tango consultant Mariana Parma, accentuate the Latin rhythms that permeate The Rep’s riveting interpretation under the watchful eye of director Rob Ruggiero. The director puts his own distinctive stamp on The Rep’s rendition, such as replacing the famous “musical chairs” number of Argentine military leaders with some abrupt, pronounced dance steps in its stead on “The Art of the Possible” number. Ruggiero also employs judicious use of aisles at the Browning Mainstage for savvy appearances by Pepe

Nufrio as Che, the omnipresent narrator, who wryly observes from his perch how a “woman of the people” such as Eva may in reality be grabbing for money and power along her way to fame. Michelle Aravena makes for an electrifying Evita, packing a powerful wallop in her diminutive frame and a measured voice that delivers a poignant presentation of the show’s signature tune, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Sean MacLaughlin reprises his role as Perón in a recent national touring production to great effect, pairing with Aravena to underscore the military ruler’s dependence upon and love for his attractive, self-assured wife. Shea Gomez demonstrates a beautiful voice as Perón’s mistress on the haunting ballad “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” while Nicolas Dávila impresses as singer Augustin Magaldi. In addition to Dávila and Gomez, the tight ensemble, impeccably directed by Ruggiero to summon images of adoring crowds, snooty aristocrats or sneering military men, comprises Maria Bilbao, Nathaniel Burich, Ben Chavez, Davila, Samuel Druhora, Esmeralda Garza, Samantha Gershman, Gomez, Keith Hines, Jose Luaces, Waldemar Quinones-Villanueva and Tim Wessel, as well as local stalwarts Carmen Garcia, Julie Hanson, Ben Nordstrom and April Strelinger. Musical director Charlie Alterman and his orchestra in the pit in front of the stage deliver a crisply performed, energized reading of Lloyd Webber’s challenging musical score, with additional arrangements by Sinai Tabek. Evita sounds complex and difficult to sing, albeit hauntingly lovely and invigorating. Ruggiero’s electric presentation, pulling together masterful work by artists both on the stage and off, makes The Rep’s Evita a thrilling and dynamic rendition.

Critical Mass for the Visual Arts welcomes visitors to Luther Ely Smith Plaza on St. Louis’ riverfront to celebrate the installation of RIVERBEND, a new, temporary public artwork by Margaret Keller. Riverbend is a 105-foot-long reflective, mirrorlike artwork that represents the navigable portion of the Missouri River, the longest river in North America. The artwork, to be sited on the pavement of the newly renovated Luther Ely Smith Square, marks the river’s history as the primary means of westward expansion at this crucial spot in the shadow of the Gateway Arch. Keller has designed Riverbend to be brilliant and ever-changing, to appear almost animated as the surrounding atmosphere is reflected in its surface. Free. 2 to 5 p.m. criticalmassart.org.

Ready Readers
Back to School!
W
ith the school year begun and kids busily adapting to new teachers, expectations and routines, the roller coaster of emotions experienced during this transition may last beyond the first few weeks, so Ready Readers offers a few book ideas to help allay fears and spark discussions. Monsters Love School by Mike Austin, the month’s first recommendation, showcases the adventures of monsters at play in summer. An imaginative furry fellow named Blue loves to pretend to be brave, but he’s a bit worried about the start of a new school year. As his colorful creature friends eagerly gather their new school supplies, Blue frets over potential problems. As both author and illustrator, Austin depicts silly, gregarious monsters through manifold colors and visual textures. The collagelike images suggest each beast’s unique qualities. Most children should find a character with whom they relate, from the worried Blue, to the ultra-organized list-making Greeny, to the art class-loving Pinky in
her handmade frilly crown. Our second story recommendation, Rufus Goes to School by writer Kim T. Griswell and illustrator Valeri Gorbachev, introduces an endearing, determined young pig with a favorite picture book. While his porcine pals busily play ball, Rufus tries to make sense of the words. He decides the solution involves going to school to learn to read. Rufus grabs his book and backpack, and goes off to enroll. At his first stop, the principal’s office, he announces: “My name is Rufus Leroy Williams III. I have a backpack, and I am ready for school.” Shaking his head, the principal replies, “No
By Sheila Oliveri pigs at school!” Over the next few days, the plucky piglet tries again and again, each time with a new school supply sure to change the principal’s mind. Each time, though, Rufus hears: “Makes no difference. No pigs in school!” But Rufus doesn’t give up, determined to learn to read his favorite book. Children should love Griswell’s persistent protagonist, whose amiable and earnest desire to learn may well mirror their own excitement over everything a new school year holds in store. Gorbachev’s watercolor illustrations, meanwhile, portray Rufus and his pals (human and hog) in delightful detail. Children and parents alike should be pulling for the unlikely student as he stubbornly trots toward his goal of learning.

right sunlight illuminates the café. This is Lola Jean’s Giveback Coffee, and it isn’t taking in a single dime of profit. Chef Russell Ping wants it that way. Opened in early July, Lola Jean’s is part of a growing trend of not-for-profit businesses that donate proceeds to local charities once employees and bills

are paid. Ping, who runs the eponymous and überpopular Russell’s Café & Bakery – which operates three locations in the metro area – saw it as the perfect opportunity to do his part for others in need. “I had been brainstorming ideas for a project that could give back to the community, and this seemed like a perfect fit,” he says. The pop-up shop, named for Ping’s daughter and located a block away from Russell’s on Macklind in St. Louis’ South Hampton neighborhood, operates using a lean marketing approach – partnering charities are primarily responsible for getting the
word out when it’s their time to shine, typically on social media. And timing is involved, too, because the beneficiary changes each month. “We wanted to try to help different organizations throughout the year,” Ping says. “On top of daily sales, we also plan to hold at least one event per month.” These events can vary depending on the partner and time of year. For August, Lola Jean’s hosted a barista art latte throwdown with Kaldi’s Coffee, the nonprofit’s exclusive caffeinator. Kaldi’s invited employees from all of its area locations to join the festivities and help raise money for
Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis, Lola Jean’s first “giveback partner.” In the months to come, Lola Jean’s will partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, Pedal the Cause and the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, with all proceeds going toward sponsoring a transplant for a child in need. Each organization applies for giveback partner status on Lola Jean’s website, and although there are no specific criteria that Ping is looking for, it does help that organizations are well-known and have vocal followings. The coffee, however, remains the same. Kaldi’s, from product to concept, is essential to the nonprofit – from Ping emailing the Kaldi’s owners in the middle of the night to their donation of all of the café’s coffee equipment. “Kaldi’s has done an awesome job of growing but maintaining a family-owned-business feel,” Ping says. “[It’s] constantly trying something new and changing while keeping [itself] involved in the community.” Fittingly, the menu at Lola Jean’s is as expansive as any coffee shop you’ll find in the metro area. Espresso drinks such as lattes, cortados and Americanos make up the majority of the offerings, but tea-drinkers will be pleased to find loose-leaf selections from Kaldi’s sister company, Firepot Tea.
Adventurous coffee consumers will be drawn to house-made syrups, each a unique combination of ingredients ranging from orange-rosemary black pepper to vanilla bean-lemon-mint. There’s also nitro cold brew on tap for those extra-hot days that sneak up in early Missouri autumns.
Naturally, sweets are also part of the equation. “The baked goods come from down the street every morning and change daily,” Ping says. “We normally carry a selection of puff pastry sweets prepared with seasonal fruits, like fresh peach turnovers, as well as cookies, savory scones and at least one gluten-free item.”
From concept to coffee to crumble, every aspect of the Lola Jean’s experience is a success. Yet Ping maintains that Lola Jean’s is impermanent, at least where it’s located. “I’ve been dreaming up a wood-fired pizza and ice cream concept for a while now, and the intention for 5400 Nottingham has always been pizza,” Ping says. “Our original idea was to only run the coffee shop for a year as a pop-up, but the response has been so great that we’ve decided to keep coffee. Part of the property that I’m leasing has a garage space right behind it, so I talked to the landlord, and we’re going to convert it into a walk-up place with some soft seating inside, kind of like a smaller version of what it is now.” For the time being, the best way to support Lola Jean’s and its giveback partners is simple: Go drink coffee, eat pastries and tell everyone you know, both online and in person. As for the not-for-profit café trend, Ping seems optimistic. “The idea of giving back is definitely not a new one,” he says. “But I do think that more and more restaurants are looking for ways to do their part.” Lola Jean’s Giveback Coffee, 5400 Nottingham Ave., St. Louis, lolajeanscoffee.com
