We then spent the summer bolstering and increasing our of-the-moment digital and social coverage and producing robust biweekly issues, stocked with resources to help us all get through this time and full of stories about how the members of our community were rising up to support one another. I closed that May 29 letter by saying that we looked forward to returning to our normal schedule in the fall, when we hoped that events, businesses and the world in general would have returned to normalcy. As we now know – although many in our community have adapted in substantial and impressive ways over the past few months – normalcy has far from returned. Ladue News will therefore be continuing our efforts of this summer into the foreseeable future. We will persist in growing our online presence in order to give our community what it needs most right now – a consistent connection to local businesses, people and causes. Our biweekly printing schedule will continue as well, brimming with dynamic local news, entertainment and ways you can help your neighbors right now. Thank you for your continued support, and thank you for reading. We’ll see you October 9! Stay well,
Emily Adams, Editor-in-Chief

hen someone is incarcerated, it doesn’t just affect their lives, but their community. And when those getting out of prison have the support system to keep them from returning, that is a step toward healing communities, as well. This is the mission behind Concordance Academy of Leadership, working to lower the re-incarceration rate in St. Louis and across the United States. Six years ago, Danny Ludeman began Concordance Academy after retiring as CEO of Wells Fargo Advisors. After two years of research with Washington University in St. Louis, the academy began to offer its 18-month program, focusing on holistic services for substance abuse and mental health disorders, as well as offering employment and housing resources. “The core issue here that a lot of people don’t fully understand is that every one of our participants has been impacted by horrific childhood trauma,” Ludeman explains. “They need to be healed from that trauma. If nothing has changed in their lives after prison and they’re not treated, the [societal] ecosystem is that they’ll commit another crime and go back.” When Concordance Academy was founded, there was a 77 percent re-incarceration rate, with half of the re-incarcerations happening within a year of the initial discharge. “Our goal from Wash U was cutting that by a third,” Ludeman says. “Since opening, we’ve cut that by 44 percent.”

Concordance Academy is spreading its model to 12 additional cities and has recently launched the First Chance Campaign, chaired by World Wide Technology founder and chairman David Steward. The $50 million fundraising campaign has already gained more than 40 cochairs from across the country. “People are really compelled,” Steward explains. “They’re looking for ways to impact their community.” Ludeman and Steward both felt guided to this cause by their faith and understand that the impact of Concordance Academy transcends individuals and goes toward helping address larger societal inequality. “There’s a lot that is coming out of this program,” Steward says. “[Participants] are passionate and committed and can be the guardians they need to be in the community.” “It’s named [First Chance Campaign] because this often is the first chance they’ll have in their life,” Ludeman adds. “It has a ripple effect on so many people.” Concordance Academy is incredibly grateful for the generosity of the St. Louis business community for getting it to where it is now and helping see the academy into the future. “I know no other organization that gives the kind of return on investment,” Steward concludes. “This is transformative across this country and will give impact for generations to come.”

BUSINESS NOTES
CREATING COMMUNITY By Amanda Dahl
W
hen the metro area went into lockdown at the start of the local spread of the novel coronavirus, the owners of Sump Coffee, like many others in the service industry, did not know what the future held for their business. Shellshocked alongside the rest of the world, Scott Carey and Marz Yamaguchi felt compelled not only to take care of their employees but also to provide aid during their community’s time of greatest need. Following the model of a San Francisco-area coffee shop, Sump Coffee opened a donation website to allow customers to fund coffee runs to local hospitals in support of frontline workers. “Everyone in hospitality is in the same storm,” Carey says. “We may be on different boats, but it’s the same storm. Our community of fans and supporters came together early on. They wanted us to survive and embraced buying a coffee for a

frontline worker. It was altruistic, giving aid and comfort to hospital staff, and it helped Sump make it through.” As they look to the upcoming colder seasons, Sump Coffee, which has a compact storefront, continues to face new challenges. “Trying to make guests feel welcome is still the goal, but there’s a lot more criteria [to meet] now,” Carey says. For now, Sump Coffee is open for curbside service only, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with availability for customers to order online for curbside and outdoor dining. To provide dine-in service, though, the coffee shop would accrue significant cost, Carey says, through supplying single-serve consumables and hiring the personnel who would ensure no gatherings occurred. “Café culture is not just about enjoying a cup of coffee,” Carey recognizes. “It’s about community –
the relationship the café has with the community and that the community has in supporting the café. Your favorite coffee shop is something nurturing and ritualistic and anchoring. It’s about the experience one has in that space.” One thing is certain, based on the community’s support of Carey and his business. As the world keeps weathering the public health crisis, something as simple as ordering a cup of joe can bring about a sense of normalcy that is dearly missed.

HYKEN’S HOMEWORK
LETTING GO By Dr. Russell Hyken
A
t the start of September, it finally happened. We moved our teen into his freshman dorm. My wife and I are especially proud of our son, Court, and of all of the 2020 grads. After one of the most bizarre school years on record, you guys made it! Freshman year in college looks much different from what anyone could have imagined, but I know you all will work hard and have an amazing college experience. Despite the confidence my wife and I have in our son’s ability to make good decisions, we also have to acknowledge that our anxiety is a bit higher than is typical, due to COVID-19. When we text Court to say stay safe, which we probably do too often, we can well imagine that he is rolling his eyes and is slightly annoyed. It can be difficult to set aside parental worries and avoid imposing adult anxieties onto our college-age children when the world is in crisis. An easy way to calm one’s nerves is simply to ask your
freshman how he or she is doing and then let your child speak. Some kids will have a lot to say, and others will respond with a one-word answer. Follow your son or daughter’s lead, and avoid lecturing about proper behavior. The goal of any good interaction is to have a dialogue. Once the conversation begins, ask specific questions that will calm your nerves. Inquiries about college life, such as about how the dining hall is enforcing social distancing and if students wear masks at the campus gym, are neutral comments that can keep the conversation flowing. Also, have practical discussions. College guidelines regarding COVID-19 protocols shift frequently as the course of the virus changes. Encourage your child to stay current by checking the school’s website for updates regarding expectations. Most notably, all students should be aware of shifting residential rules. Lastly, map out a plan in case a crisis presents. Students should know what to do if they think they
might be ill, including who to call, where to go and how to avoid infecting others. Students should also have a strategy if school shuts down. Being prepared will ease everyone’s tension in case something unfortunate occurs. Part of the college experience is having spontaneous gatherings, engaging in late-night conversations and exploring one’s surroundings, but for this year, that looks different. Parents, trust you have raised a smart child who makes good decisions. Good luck to Court, and his best friends: Ben, Henry, Hugh, Jon, Max, Will and the rest of the class of 2020! It’s going to be fun to watch you succeed. Be safe, have fun and study hard!

The GiftAMeal app builds community through food donations that are triggered each time a user shares a photo from one of more than 200 restaurant partners in the metro area.
W
hile scrolling through social media, do you often catch yourself drooling over the image of a juicy burger or a decadent dessert? Inspired by this phenomena, two friends came up with the idea to launch a savvy app to share snapshots of delicious dishes … but with the purpose of promoting magnanimity and goodwill in the area community. For every photo posted through the GiftAMeal app, another meal is donated to someone in need. Additional shares on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter provide more meals to fight food insecurity. “Hunger can happen to anyone,” says Andrew Glantz, co-founder and CEO. “There are so many good people who face food insecurity through no fault of their own. Hunger can be a barrier to all other opportunities for people in need. We can all support each other in the community and all be better off.” Glantz was only 19 when he and co-founder Aidan Folbe came up with the vision for GiftAMeal while sharing a pizza. He once believed that startups were too risky, but “the potential impact and scalability” of this venture felt worth it, Glantz says. “Even if we failed, we’d provide hundreds of thousands of meals to those in need, and support local restaurants and businesses for a good period of time,” he says. “If we succeeded, we could build something that could make a difference at a national scale, feeding those in need, putting a dent in food insecurity, providing a unique solution to restaurants and creating an easy way for people to give back.” By the start of this month, GiftAMeal had officially donated half a million meals throughout its existence,
thanks to 35,000 app users and more than 200 restaurant partners. “The entirety of my life has led to the mission of GiftAMeal,” Glantz says. From volunteering at an early age to serving as vice president of a charity in high school, which netted $350,000 for children in need, to owning and operating a nonprofit storefront during his college years at Washington University in St. Louis, which promoted reuse and sustainability, Glantz has always taken an active interest in bettering the world. GiftAMeal is funded through partner restaurants that subscribe to a monthly plan ranging from $49 to $79 to $149. “Each time the user takes a photo on GiftAMeal, we make a monetary donation to the local food bank,” Gantz explains. “In St. Louis, that’s Operation Food Search. We’re paying for the cost of distribution – refrigeration, transportation and labor costs – to get donated food to Operation Food Search.” The restaurant industry was hit hard at the start of the pandemic. The demand for access to food resources went up as more people lost jobs. Glantz felt challenged to not only carry his company through this crisis but also aid those in need. First, GiftAMeal waived monthly subscriptions for a couple of months, helping restaurant
partners as photo to preserve by michael thom cash flow. Next, GiftAMeal pledged to match up to $5,000 to Operation Food Search to provide immediate hunger relief. “We sent an email to our users, and within 10 days, we raised more than $22,000,” Glantz says. “That helped to provide more than 8,000 meal kits for families in need.” Then, the company helped users to continue supporting local restaurants by creating filters on the app that allowed users to discover which restaurants offered curbside pickup, carryout, delivery or gift cards, or were Black-owned. GiftAMeal also launched a new podcast, Food on the Table (available on Spotify, Apple Podcast and Google Podcast). The show shares stories of how people in the metro area food space were affected by the pandemic. The podcast aims to build a sense of community in which everyone supports one another. “The pandemic shifted everything,” Glantz says. “Restaurants might have ordered too much food. We helped arrange for Operation Food Search to pick up donations and prevent waste. During all of this, we’ve been trying to take care of all stakeholders. We didn’t let any employees go during the pandemic.” He adds: “We’ve been trying to do what we can to support restaurants and the community. We’re super fortunate for how supportive the community has been.” The GiftAMeal app is available for free on iOS and Android. 314-656-6244, giftameal.com

PERFECT PERSIMMONS By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess
T
hree persimmon trees stand outside my sunroom window. The first has already ripened – and been stripped by hungry squirrels. The other two bear jade green fruits that will tinge to a soft orangey peach when they’re nearly ready. Most years, the crop is so heavy the fruit remains after the leaves drop. I wait for these moments of beauty, with dark alligator bark and branches with plum-size, amber-pink gems against the blue autumn sky. After the season’s first frost ends the puckering astringency persimmons are famous for, a subtle sweetness emerges, and they become candylike with the cold. My friend Patty once traveled with her sister in Japan during persimmon season. Never much aware of persimmons before, she appreciated the reverence with which the Japanese cared for the trees and the fruit alike. Pyramids of perfectly frosted orange-red varieties were stacked neatly in shop windows. Carefully tended trees, leaves dropping to reveal their coral treasures, lined the tidy gardens along the train lines for miles. I myself have been fortunate enough to take that train and see the gracefully laden trees ready for harvest. Your own garden would make a perfect place for this lovely, small, deciduous tree. My trees are the native type, Diospyros virginiana, planted by Mother Nature – and admired by me. They may reach 50 feet eventually but are well-behaved in the home landscape as well as in woodlands. Also, we don’t fight the squirrels for their fruits, as most years there are enough for all. The Missouri Department of Conservation recommends the persimmon tree for mixed reforestation. Early Golden, Meader and Szukis are the best varieties to seek. Planting two or more will increase yield.

That said, it’s often easier to find the smaller maturing Asian persimmon tree, D. kaki, for sale. Self-pollenating varieties include Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro or Early Jiro (a dwarf with nonastringent, sweet, typically seedless, early red-orange fruit); Fire Crystal (an astringent variety, popular in China, handsome, early, productive and bright orange); Great Wall (an astringent variety with small fruit and excellent fall color); Nikita’s Gift (an American/Asian hybrid from Russia with astringent, large flatter fruit that drops when ripe); and Saijo (an astringent, excellent Japanese variety with a vigorous, good yield, maturing at 15 feet). Nonastringent Asian varieties are naturally low in tannins and may be enjoyed while still crisp. Astringent varieties, Asian and American, bear high-tannin fruits and must be soft and very ripe to be sweet. Wild local persimmons are typically harvested in late October or early November after their fruits have dropped naturally to the ground. These have large seeds, so it takes a lot of them to make a persimmon pudding, but it’s a really special treat.

A metro area resident’s savvy, budgetfriendly 13-year-old fashion blog is now tackling the global scene.
“
In comparison to today, it felt like a less populous and smaller online world.”
– Psyche Southwell
“I
t’s been a year filled with unexpected turns,” writes Psyche Southwell on her fashion blog, Economy of Style, in a mid-August post. Covering “evolving trends, fashion sense and cents” since 2007, Southwell started her platform to demonstrate that women can achieve their desired styles on any budget, but she recognizes that the fashion industry, reflecting current times, is shifting and evolving. These days, to highlight the fashion we’re seeing less on the streets and more on the screens of Zoom calls and TV, Southwell’s recent blog posts have covered colorful loungewear, breezy and versatile dresses, fashion-forward masks made by metro area women entrepreneurs and an aspirational roundup of “What I’d Be Wearing If I Weren’t at Home.” Born in Basseterre, St. Kitts, an island in the Caribbean, Southwell moved here as a graduate student studying economics at Washington University in St. Louis. Rejecting the more resigned attire of the academic life, she quickly used her schooling to carve out an identifiable niche online through her blog, before the term influencer was an official dictionary entry and when Instagram was just a hazy dream. “In comparison to today, it felt like a less populous and smaller online world,” Southwell says. “At the same time, it was so exciting meeting so many diverse people from across the country and around the world with related interests, and I was thrilled to embark onto this new way of engaging my love of fashion and shopping on a budget.” She began with a basic focus on affordable workday clothes that eventually incorporated outfits and styles for a variety of settings, as well as hair, makeup, accessories, shoes and more. “Because fashion is a billion-dollar industry, it’s easy for many people to feel that only rich people and runway models are what fashion entails,” Southwell says. “But there are so many possibilities and rewards for those who are interested in shopping on a budget and for those of us interested in living and leading colorful, creative lives.” As Southwell’s popularity grew, fans of the Economy of Style blog followed her to Instagram (she’s amassed an impressive 13,400 followers to date), and the fashionista’s personal style – which she describes as incorporating classic
and timeless pieces, playful bright colors and sharp silhouettes – quickly garnered local and national attention. Most recently, she was crowned the “Fashionista to Follow” in the 2020 St. Louis Magazine A-List Awards. Perhaps most notably, though, she was one of six winners of the Real Women Style Awards who were featured on the cover of Redbook magazine in September 2015. Her style and budgeting advice has been involved in everything from a feature in Good Housekeeping magazine to speaking gigs at the New York-based global nonprofit Fashion Group International. She’s also partnered with household-name retailers including J.Crew, Target and Gibsonlook, as well as beauty brands such as Murad skin care and nonprofits including Girls on the Run International. Given continuing seasonal curiosity at this time of year from followers (and Ladue News interviewers), Southwell has a few thoughts on what’s trending this fall. According to her post in mid-August, she forecasts ruffles (like an adorable taffeta skirt from Topshop) and puff sleeves on everything from sweaters to coats (or the denim jacket she models from Zara) for this season. She also adds that “voluminous dresses, jewel tones and neutral hues are all expected to be huge.” But more than being a go-to source for what’s next in fashion, Southwell, a Black woman, is also an inspiring icon for amplifying and celebrating diverse and multicultural voices, bodies and opinions in an industry that’s notoriously lacking, especially as many companies – many of them in fashion – have made public statements to address systemic racism and pervasive inequity. “That’s hopeful,” Southwell says. “I am cautious in my celebration of such recognition because I realize that Black people had to experience violent, brutal, racist deaths before this moment of reckoning and commitment to diversity arrived. “Having said that, I do plan to continue doing the work that I do. My audience has made it clear to me, over and over again, that they’re invested in what it means to see a Black body in the styles I share.” Economy of Style, economyofstyle.net

erving as a dynamite team with Janet McAfee Real Estate, Kathleen Lovett and Laura Donovan have frequently been mistaken for sisters. “When we first met, we hated each other, but that is a story for another time,” Lovett says. “We are best friends who have known each other since 1984.” These best friends have been serving the St. Louis metro area since the late ’90s, specializing in everything from the first-time buyer to the luxury client and everything in between. The Lovett-Donovan team also works with relocation throughout the central corridor, all the way out to St. Albans. “Our motto is more of an approach that we adhere to,” Lovett explains. “Service first; our success is not only determined by true sales data but also by the amount of fun and satisfaction we get from doing this job,” she says. “You must have a passion for people and this type of work to truly succeed.” That approach has proven results. The LovettDonovan team has been named one of St. Louis Magazine’s Five Star Winners for Customer Service in Real Estate for the past 11 years. Outside of real estate, Lovett and Donovan enjoy spending time with their families – and their dogs – as well as donating their time to various organizations throughout the community.

rowing up, Rex W. 1247 Black Forest Drive West | $475,000 This four bedroom, three and one-half bath log cabin was originally constructed on a plantation in Argyle Missouri in 1841, 20 years before the Civil War. It was one of the few two-story log cabins and is made from first cut Missouri oak. It sat on a pony express stop and the north-facing kitchen window adjoined the small hut used to store the mail bags. It’s unknown how long it sat empty, but in 2006 it was disassembled, treated and moved to its present location maintaining the floor plan and adding a great room and basement. To be located where one overlooks a gorgeous fishing lake, amid mature trees, where wildlife abounds, is a dream that is attainable.

ust outside the Gigondas Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée and the village/AOC of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, near the commune of Orange in France, stands one of the oldest wineries in existence today, Château de Saint Cosme.
The vines were planted on the slopes surrounding the Chapel of Saint Cosme, a Gallo-Roman structure dating from the 11th century. In 1490, a man named Esprit Vaton purchased the estate, and nowadays, centuries and many generations later, his descendants still run the winery. Over the centuries, Château de Saint Cosme has expanded its land and vineyards and also has become a négociant (upscale wine merchant), purchasing grapes from other area vineyards. Known mostly in southern Rhône for its Gigondas and Châteauneuf-duPape reds, Saint Cosme also produces two whites, Château de Saint Cosme Le Poste and Domaine de Saint Cosme Les Deux Albion. The latter refers to a vineyard planted entirely by Saint Cosme in the IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée) Principauté

d’Orange region – a careful blend of six varietals, dominated by viognier, marsanne and picpoul, with small amounts of clairette, ugni blanc and bourboulenc. The viognier and marsanne provide weight and heavier aroma and flavor components, while the remaining varietals help to lift the weight of the wine by adding crispness, acidity and lighter aromas. This results in an amazing wine: complex and wellbalanced, an absolute pleasure from the first sip to the last drop. Food Pairings: Les Deux Albion complements medium to soft cow’s or goat’s milk cheeses, pâté, sautéed mushrooms, grilled or roasted chicken or fish cream sauces and pork loin.

Peno I By Mabel Suen
n Clayton, Peno features a menu of southern Italian soul food including salads, pasta, pizza and more. Owner Pepe Kehm opened the eatery, which offers carryout via online ordering, in 2016. “So much of what we do is in house,” Kehm says. “We hand-make our pastas, breads, pizza doughs and sauces.” Before opening Peno, Kehm operated local businesses including Felix’s Pizza Pub in St. Louis’ Clayton-Tamm neighborhood and Spaghetteria Mamma Mia in that municipality’s midtown. He comes from a long line of restaurateurs with nearly a century’s worth of roots stemming from Calabria in southernmost Italy. “We call our food the Creole of Italy,” Kehm says. “It’s a flavoring profile that includes Turkish, Far East, Middle East and African influences – all those blended spices and aromatics that kind of make up southern Italian food. It’s a melting pot of worldly food.” Peno, which is named after a few inspiring individuals of the same name – including Kehm’s grandfather, Guiseppino Grandinetti – features family recipes and scratch-made comfort food. From the rotating seasonal menu, customers can choose from starters such as a beet-and-goat cheese salad with spinach, arugula and pistachio-encrusted goat cheese. Specialties include seafood pasta with black spaghetti, fresh fish, clams, mussels and red broth; Pizza Pepe with spicy chicken, escarole, wild mushroom, calabrese chile oil, fresh ricotta and oven-roasted tomato; and a lavish seafood stew featuring halibut, swordfish, tuna, clams, mussels, octopus and shrimp, incorporating oven-roasted tomatoes and spinach in a tomato saffron broth, with orzo, potatoes, peas, mushrooms and breadcrumbs. “For us, it’s more about putting food on the plate than foams or finishing dabs,” Kehm says. “It’s just a real kind of comfort food – not a lot of show, but a lot of go.”

Louis’ Center of Creative Arts – aka COCA – is optimistically celebrating its recent expansion with a commissioned project titled “Common Ground.” A press release from the center characterizes that communitarian project as “a large-scale, site-specific, participatory installation” potentially involving more than a single responding artist and climaxing the center’s multiyear Create Our Future campaign. The expansion of the center’s campus, meanwhile, seeks “to scale COCA’s impact and serve the St. Louis community as a house of the people.” “The expanded campus is such a signal of hope – for the future of the arts and artistic expression – not just for COCA, but for the entire community,” says Shawna Flanigan, the center’s director of arts education and new program development. “This is just what we all need right now.” With a total budget of $15,000, “Common Ground” initially involved an open call for no-fee applications through Aug. 7. On Sept. 9, COCA announced the winning artist: Olaniyi R. Akindiya, aka AKIRASH, a Nigerian now living and working in Austin, Texas. With work on the project scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 25, “Common Ground,” theoretically, will involve student artists and community participants and will run through Nov. 15. The project will occupy a place of prominence in the two-story Centene Commons in the expansion’s Ferring East Wing, co-designed by the Clayton architectural firm of Christner Inc. and St. Louis’ multivalent Axi:Ome. Amenities in that new wing, according to the center’s website, include a state-of-the-art theater seating 450, named in honor of St. Louis’ Berges Family Foundation; a 4,600-square-foot multidisciplinary studio space; community space throughout to create a more welcoming environs for visitors; and a designated, safe, accessible dropoff/pickup point to counterpoise garage and street parking. the project’s very title. “Through the open call, COCA is sharing the celebration of the opening with artists, hoping that they will be inspired and will inspire us,” she says. “The response has been just what we hoped for – imaginative, creative and diverse. The range of responses was fantastic.” According to the center’s press release, the collaborative jury selection for “Common Ground” involved a sevenperson panel of art and design professionals and community representatives, whom Flanigan identifies as Adrienne Davis, Shereen Fischer, Steve Knight, Bob Millstone, Yvonne Osei and Heather Woofter, in addition to Flanigan herself. The many respondents to the open call hailed not only from the metro area, Flanigan relates, but also “from other parts of the state as well as one from Austin, Texas.” She continues by lauding the collective diversity of the submissions for “Common Ground.” “We were very intentional in our call, to leave a lot of room for artistic interpretation and input,” Flanigan says. “The responses were exactly what we were hoping for. The creative thinking and expression is just amazing, with a range of mediums and media that reflect such a variety of interpretation of our prompt.” She then wryly mentions the difficulty of making a decision in the matter, while expressing delight at one particular aspect of the submissions in general. “The artists were asked to include a participatory element, so that as small groups of visitors begin to tour the new spaces in September, they can pause and take part in the creative process,” Flanigan notes. “The artist response to that part of the challenge was really striking.” Ironically, at a time when COVID-19 has shattered the status quo here, there and everywhere, the center’s project, by design, seeks to supplant “business as usual” in matters like this, Flanigan comments. “A traditional ribbon-cutting is a stand-alone, one-time event,” she says. “‘Common Ground’ is a celebration of what COCA’s community has built – an accessible, central place for the entire community to connect through the arts.” COCA, 6880 Washington Ave., St. Louis, 314-725-6555, cocastl.org
