EDITOR WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS BEYOND EXCITED TO TAKE an offered pottery class. Not too far into the course, though, I realized creating anything with clay was a lot more challenging than it looked, giving me a whole new appreciation for the art – and such artists as Katie Bensky. Starting on page 80 in our Arts & Culture section, Ladue News copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach shares Benky’s story – from learning the art to following her calling into the sculptor she is today. We hope you enjoy learning more about Bensky and her spectacular skills. Also in this week’s edition, we are so excited to announce the relocation and revamp of Mister Guy and MG Women (the redubbed Mister Guy Women’s). Starting on page 55 of our Style section, LN rock star freelance writer Brittany Nay shares what inspired the move and the change, and what patrons should expect to see from the brand they already know and love. All the best,
Alecia Humphreys
Editor’s Corner The word around town
Scott Credit Union Community Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the United Way of Greater St. Louis to support its ongoing efforts to strengthen communities. The funds were raised at Scott Credit Union Community sponsors attended the event, which raised more than $50,000.
Congratulations to Katherine Ransden, a Webster Groves High School student, for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award in the program. To earn this designation, Ransden combined her passion for scouting with her interest in theater to design a costume workspace and storage area in the school’s new drama room. To obtain the needed materials, she organized and led a team of fellow Scouts in a bake sale to earn funds to purchase the necessary supplies. Ransden spent several days building the station and then installed the piece in the new theater space. Her contribution will be cared for by the Webster Groves High School thespian community for many years to come.

ometimes a statistic can change your life. That’s what happened to Danny Ludeman in 2014, when he was told that 77 percent of people released from prison recommit a crime in a five-year period. “I was incredulous,” Ludeman recalls. “It was hard to believe that there was no improvement.” Recently retired from his position of CEO at Wells Fargo Advisors, Ludeman didn’t have a background in psychology; but he did know about strategic planning, defining problems and improving processes. So that’s what he set out to do. Ludeman founded Concordance Academy of Leadership in May of 2015, employing the best researchers from Washington University’s Brown School to help identify the best intervention methods to help former justice-involved individuals stay physically and mentally healthy and keep them on the path of finding and retaining employment. The Academy didn’t officially begin offering its services until a year later, with Ludeman citing the need for a solid re-entry model before they began to take people in. “Everything we do is based upon research and science,” he explains. “We spent two years studying what this population needs and only implement what works.” The successful re-entry method begins six months pre-release, helping with behavioral health and offering legal services to eliminate further charges. Post-release, Concordance offers a 12-month holistic program that includes substance-use services and an employment model that starts in a part-time capacity and then shifts to a full-time opportunity with one of three industries that partner with Concordance. Participants work with supervisors and are required to report back once a week for group therapy and to speak with a job coach. “There are so many issues that have to be addressed,” Ludeman adds. “We offer wrap-around services so people can keep coming back and provide support for a long period of time.” Concordance Academy of Leadership has already exceeded its goals. “There has been a 40 percent decrease in the number or people coming out of prison returning,” Ludeman says. “We count every participant – however long they stay with us. We want to show that our program can work for everyone.” Concordance uses its annual gala as its sole fundraising event and as a way to spread its mission to the world. Big Top Bizarre is the theme of their fifth annual gala and will be held on October 19 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. Ludeman confirms that it is through the funding from the gala and investors that they are able to provide what they can. “We’re very blessed,” he concludes. he Women’s Society of Washington University held its fifth August Trend Event at Neiman Marcus in Plaza Frontenac. This year’s theme, “Art in Fashion,” was moderated by the store’s fashion buyers Mark Lawson and Kel Rowe, with models from West Modeling. Before the runway show, guests enjoyed passed appetizers and wine, along with the opportunity to participate in several raffle contests. Cheryl DiMauro, the store’s vice president and general manager, welcomed guests and introduced Kathy Frost, the society’s president. Madison Bouse – this year’s Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholar, who is transferring into Washington University from St. Louis Community College-Meramec – spoke as well. The society has awarded 55 full-tuition scholarships to St. Louis Community College graduates and presented 36 leadership awards to graduating senior women.

MASQUERADE GALA Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

uests were greeted by a Venetian gondolier as they entered the Masquerade Gala to benefit United Services for Children. Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles, which hosted the gala, was decorated in pure masquerade style, with classical musicians greeting guests as they browsed silent auction and raffle items while eating and drinking. The 35th annual gala benefited United Services for Children and its work to provide pediatric therapy and early intervention services to young children with developmental disabilities and delays, as well as to offer support services for the families of those children. In addition to awards, a highlight of the night was a performance by vocalists from the Bach Society of Saint Louis.
Well, I’m honored to be with three other wonderful, outstanding ladies who are all past co-chairs. We’ve done it before with our husbands, but it was a different dynamic doing it with four women this year, and we all brought different things to the auction and worked our butts off all year. We all have in our hearts, we feel very dedicated to this amazing organization, United Services for Children, and that’s what brought us to the table.

Memory Care Home Solutions 13th Memories & Melodies gala Wednesday, Nov. 6 The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis Join MCHS for a dinner, raffle and presentation by neurosurgeon Eric Leuthardt, MD – as well as the honoring of three longtime MCHS supporters. HISTORY & MISSION Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia can be an overwhelming responsibility, fraught with specific, unique challenges and few available resources. That is why Memory Care Home Solutions (MCHS) was created. The organization’s mission is to extend time at home for families caring for individuals with memory impairment, focused on helping lessen the stress on the caregiver and minimize health care costs. Founder Lisa Baron, JD served as director of real estate development at Parc Provence, an Alzheimer’s residential community extension of The Gatesworth, before founding MCHS in 2002. After watching her father-in-law care for his wife with Alzheimer’s, Baron was inspired to get involved directly. “We saw him go without eating or sleeping or going out,” Baron says. “He was our inspiration – caregivers are unsung heroes who are doing incredible, thankless work.” MCHS provides social workers and occupational therapists over a year-long period, doing home visits customized for what is needed. Caregivers receive a guide book that provides a framework to apply to what their situation needs the most. Starting as a research project with Washington University and a pilot of 10 people, MCHS has grown significantly. “Last year we served 130,000 families,” Baron says. “Not many university protocols live beyond the university setting. We’ve been able to grow because of our generous funders.”
MEMORIES & MELODIES GALA The Memories & Melodies gala is an important fundraiser for MCHS, but it’s so much more than that. “Many people don’t know about nonprofits,” Baron explains. “There are 400 to 500 people at the event and it gets our name out so people can connect their friends and family to us.” The event also sets out to honor three individuals who have been instrumental in the growth of MCHS. The first, William A. Peck, MD, is a founding member of the organization’s advisory council and was dean of the Washington University School of Medicine when Baron first began research on the need for home training for family’s dealing with memory impairment. “[Peck] said from the very beginning that there was a need for this,” Baron confirms. Peck will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Vicky Fraser, MD, the Chairman of the Washington University Department of Medicine, and Steve Miller, Chief Clinical Officer at Cigna will each be receiving an Alzheimer’s Community Service Award. Both have been involved in the MCHS strategic planning and leadership team since 2002. Baron calls these honorees rock stars, adding, “I cannot think of [anyone] more deserving. They’ve been so beneficial in terms of guidance, leadership and funding, and have helped give us legitimacy.”

or the past five years, the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams signature store at Plaza Frontenac has been a haven for area residents seeking comfortable yet stylish home furnishings. But the company’s history goes back a lot further than its time here. In 1989, co-founders Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams began the company with just 23 dedicated team members, and throughout the last three decades, the company has expanded to 30 retail stores and a manufacturing and distribution center in the heart of Furniture Row in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Along the way, MG + BW furnishings have regularly appeared in the homes of celebrities, on the pages of pretty much every design magazine in publication and on TV. What makes the company’s furnishings so special after all of these years? “We offer a great value for the comfort, quality and beauty of our furnishings,” says Billie Powell, general manager of the Frontenac signature store. “We’re able to introduce modern into the community, but we also have pieces that we refer to as New Traditional. We can cater to clients that have all aesthetics in a seamless way.” MG + BW also builds all of its frames, springs and pads, and covers its furniture by hand at its factory in North Carolina, with each piece carefully created by skilled artisans. That attention to detail, coupled with the company’s partnership with Moore & Giles leather, and its highly customizable options allow MG + BW pieces to fit into any home. In the metro area, celebrating the big 3-0 took the

form of a three-day open house at the store with gift card giveaways, snacks and sparkling wine. “We were fortunate enough to see many of our regulars and lots of new faces too,” says Powell of the weekend celebration. Visitors were also able to take a look at the company’s new fall collection. So what specifically should customers and potential customers keep their eyes on this season? “I love the new Bianca in Mont Blanc Winter Pine,” says Powell of her favorite piece. “It’s very versatile in a grouping of four, as a pair or even individually. … It’s highly versatile and blends well with many styles.” For those unable to make it to the anniversary party, plenty of reasons remain to stop into the store, from MG + BW’s in-home design consultations to its custom upholstery options. And at the bare minimum, it’s interior design eye candy. “It’s a stunning showroom, and I think everyone should see it,” says Powell. “We believe in ‘Comfort for All,’ and that’s something that everyone should have access to.”

n 2021, Topton Way – a beautiful, tree-lined street in the heart of Clayton – will lead to two brand-new luxury condominiums unlike anything else in the area. The Pearl Condominiums development, at 47 and 51 Topton Way, respectively, is the culmination of efforts by the Mehlman family – specifically, Topton Condominiums LLC, which is a joint venture by Mark S. Mehlman Condos LLC and Mehlman Brothers Condos LLC. Although construction just began, a single rendering alone has preemptively sold almost all of the prospective units at prices ranging from $850,000 to $2 million. Of the 16 condos available for purchase, only one remains, still 18 to 20 months out from completion. How? Mark Mehlman says the magic is in the location and their flexibility and willingness to work with residents. “People are looking to move into this area,” he says. “You have the feel of a suburban environment, and yet you have the walkability that an urban lifestyle provides. They’re looking for new construction because there hasn’t been anything new there in 10 years. We knew that when the right opportunity came along, in the right location, that there would be a demand for condominiums of this luxury price and size.” The reputation of both companies at the forefront of The Pearl is the other factor Mehlman attributes to the success of the project. “It’s very difficult to sell units that are 18 to 24 months out when there’s nothing to look at,” Mehlman says, “but based upon our past experience and the reputation of both entities, we’ve been able to do something that’s probably just short of a miracle.” Miracle met opportunity when four adjacent apartment buildings in such a treasured area of Clayton became available, and the Mehlman family knew they had to strike quickly. “There’s really few, if any, contiguous buildings out there that would allow for something like this to be built,” Mehlman explains. “There’s a good possibility that there won’t be anything built like this of this nature again because of the lack of property available.” Once the Mehlmans had the land, the design process began immediately, with the help of Tyler Stephens of Core10 Architecture at the helm. Such a spectacular building called for equally unique floor plans, including those of the six units that were the first to sell, which feature a two-story layout with multiple bedrooms, loft spaces and private rooftop terraces. The rest of the two- and three-bedroom homes also feature open floor plans, high-quality finishes, outdoor space, 10-foot-high ceilings and 8-foot solid doors. The building’s homeowners, Mehlman notes, are an amazing group of past and present top executives and their families, who will also have the opportunity to work with an in-house designer to select their own interiors. “We love what we do, and we take very good care of all of our residents,” he says. “We’ve all become somewhat of a family as the next phase of life comes together.” That familial energy contributes strongly to the Mehlman companies’ success. “I’m a very proud father,” Mehlman says. “I’ve been able to watch my sons’ success, and I’ve been able to take somewhat of a step back and let them be a major part of this entire project, along with my wife, Debi.” The sense of family and community even gave life to the name of the development itself. “All four of our children went to the University of Colorado,” Mehlman says, “and there is an area in Boulder, Colorado, where there is a pedestrian mall, and the street it sits on is called Pearl Street. With this area [of Clayton] being a place that features so much walkability, like a pedestrian mall, it started to ring home again another common area for the family.” Mehlman says it made the project that much more special to impart that personal message of home to the project. “The Pearl had a beautiful ring to it,” he says. “And it just makes sense that this project felt somewhat like a gem.” Mark S. Robb Partners offers specific expertise in marketing and selling the distinct luxury homes of St. Louis County, including in Clayton, Ladue, Frontenac and University City. The team has sold almost 200 homes since 2015, with an average sold price of $715,000, including many listings that sold for more than $2 million. “In Clayton alone, we sold more than 60 homes at an average price of $930,000,” she notes. Robb finds that her passion for business is only further inspired by clients, with whom she has fostered a strong reputation, as well as among her colleagues. “I can’t say enough good things about Sabrina,” Jane K., a Clayton buyer, says. “Wonderful communication made the process seamless. I would highly recommend her to anyone buying or selling a home.” Shira and Jeff K., University City sellers, concur. “[Robb Partners] helped us prepare the highest quality listing that made our house shine and sell in less than one week,” they share. n 2011, Jen Ross Cross and her family moved into their Frontenac home. She, alongside her husband Andy and sons (Billy, age five, and James, age three), has devoted the past eight years to completely rehabbing the property. With a new master suite and the addition of a pool next on their to-do list, one thing is clear: Cross is passionate about real estate. A partner at Circa Properties, Cross started in the housing industry in 2002 and has made it her mission to find the character, personality and unique details of each represented listing. Her Zillow reviews are commonly filled with comments on how Cross is a bit of a character herself, who makes buying and selling a home an enjoyable process. The self-proclaimed real estate “nerd” prices properties by combing through data and touring the competition to ensure accuracy. Cross believes in the saying that “good people know good people,” which is evident in the number of clients who have referred family and friends to her. A singular service that Cross and her team offer sellers is the ability to coordinate, facilitate and finance any necessary updates and repairs to a property in need, prior to listing it on the market. In order to get top-dollar, Cross maintains, 99 percent of properties need some amount of work to be performed. Most sellers don’t have the time or resources to execute this, but Cross revels in finding creative solutions, which is one of many ways that she adds value to the process.

ister Guy is staying in style with a chic new location, fresh branding and a deeper selection of trendsetting designer duds – all while maintaining its perfectly tailored approach to service that has kept customers coming back for more than 40 years. The area staple for timeless yet trendy men’s and women’s clothing and accessories will unveil contemporary stores for both Mister Guy and MG Women (formerly Mister Guy Women’s) during grand reopening celebrations beginning the week of Oct. 14. Still in Ladue Market, the men’s and women’s shops are now adjacently located at 9817 and 9811 Clayton Road, respectively, in Ladue. Terry and Carla Felumb began working for Mister Guy in 1976 and purchased the company in 1992. Now the Felumbs are passing the longtime family business to its second generation – their daughter, Sarah Rhim, and her husband, Simon – who moved back to St. Louis from San Francisco in 2009. “My parents are still very involved, and for the past 10 years, [Simon and I] have been in the process of learning the business, moving it into the next generation,” Sarah Rhim says, adding that she is leading buying and marketing for the women’s side, while her spouse is on the sales floor and handling the marketing and buying for the men’s store. The newly connected Mister Guy and MG Women is a step forward, with a nod to the past, Rhim says. “Historically, the stores were combined men’s and women’s stores, but because of a real estate opportunity in St. Louis, they opened separate shops,” she says. “We wanted to return to the heritage of the
brand and put our store back together to make it more convenient to shop both our men’s and women’s [collections].” The new location has been renovated from top to bottom to feature a contemporary feel with modern décor, including chrome and mixed-metal fixtures, as well as a gray, white and navy color scheme. “The clothes really pop against the color palette,” Rhim says. “It’s a contemporary, updated and cosmopolitan shopping experience like you would have in a bigger city.” With the new space also comes a rebranding, including fresh logos; new e-commerce websites, misterguymens.com and misterguywomens.com; and, of course, the new name for Mister Guy Women’s. “We changed the women’s store name since Mister Guy Women’s was always sort of a misnomer if you didn’t know the history of the brand,” Rhim says. “We wanted to give it a fresh start.” Both reimagined stores will still offer many of the same quality, contemporary local to international brands customers know and love, including Peter Millar Crown men’s apparel and Peter Millar luxury menswear and womenswear. The remodeled men’s shop also will carry a new, exciting inventory for fall, from an expanded shoe selection and a Stenstroms custom shirt department to an even bolder emphasis on tailored clothing, Rhim says. “Tailored clothing has the biggest expansion,” she says. “It will have 400 square feet of additional selling space, and a much larger selection of off-the-rack tailored suits and custom suit options.” The revamped women’s store, which carries everything from traditional yet
trendy dresses to denim and accessories, will add Trask shoes and Trina Turk clothing, as well as continue to offer newer brand favorites such as Veronica Beard designer wear and MOTHER jeans. Although the shops have a new look, Mister Guy’s signature services will stay the same, from free gift wrap to complimentary alterations, fittings and full styling services. “We will still have the same great customer service people are used to,” Rhim says. “Everything we do at Mister Guy and MG Women is for our clientele … from the current makeover to the brands we carry to the custom, free tailoring offered – even down to the details of birthdays, personal style preferences [and] special ordering.” The week of grand reopening events will include the stores’ fall brand release, gift raffles and a red-carpet celebration featuring food, cocktails, DJ Who and a photo booth from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 16. “The theme is to wear your favorite Mister Guy outfit – vintage or new,” Rhim says. “It will be a celebration of our heritage, as we look both backward and forward and embrace all the support from everyone in St. Louis for the last 40 years.” As Mister Guy looks to the future, it will employ a renewed effort to mesh its men’s and women’s shops with combined events, such as a Trask shoes trunk show next month, Rhim says: “We want to continue to bring the stores together.” Mister Guy and MG Women, 9817 and 9811 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-991-5262, misterguymens.com, misterguywomens.com

When Things Go Wrong
T
“FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.”
hat line, apocryphally attributed to NASA Mission Director Gene Kranz in the classic 1995 film Apollo 13, accurately sums up our society’s approach when faced with a crisis. We find a way to conquer adversity, and we expect to win. Admirable qualities, no doubt, that previously have served us well in times of trouble. Unfortunately, that noble attitude has some unintended consequences, two of which I’ll consider here. The first unintended consequence is that we too often focus on deciding who or what is to blame. The examples throughout our history are numerous. We saw this in the 1940s, with the military’s investigation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; again in 1968, with the investigation into the capture of the USS Pueblo off the coast of North Korea; and even earlier this century, with the investigation of 9/11. In each case, did we work to understand how these events could have been avoided, or did we simply look for a villain? Our inclination to find blame fails to acknowledge that disasters such as these are often caused by failures, both individual and systemic. Humans, being what we are, are ultimately responsible for failure. But we do not deal easily with failure. We fear failure. It breeds
contempt. No one is lonelier or avoided more ardently than a person who is perceived to be failing. It gives us comfort to be able to say it’s someone else’s fault. Which brings me to the second unintended consequence. As an educator, I have always struggled with our traditional A-B-C-D-F grading system. There is no E; we jump right to “F” for emphasis on failure. How many young students have been labeled as failures in this way, perhaps stigmatizing them for life? How many have seen a big red F at the top of a test paper and given up? Would it not be better to focus on helping them learn from their mistakes, to show them what it takes to do better and to foster the inherent potential they possess? Shouldn’t we accept that we have as much responsibility as they do to see them succeed? I prefer the approach Winston Churchill espoused: “Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” Failure is not an option when we accept the truth that success is difficult. Success does not come easily; certainly, it is much easier to fail. The most successful people are usually also the most persistent. Success takes planning, preparation and perseverance. Most important, it requires a belief in oneself that success is possible. No one do we love more than those who overcome

failure with triumph. Success glows ever brighter when contrasted with the repeated failures that one may have experienced along the way. Although not an option, failure should be an opportunity to learn, to improve and to strive for a better tomorrow. That is the attitude that put men into space and brought them back safely, against all odds. It is that attitude that we need to have every time we face adversity.

Hunting and fishing paradise on private, gated lake. Two lake lots adjoin a large tract of mature timber on the beautiful 35-acre Timber Ridge Lake. Take your UTV down the long winding drive to the dock and fish for bass and catfish. Lots of deer and turkeys! This property lays very nice, and the trail system gives you great access throughout. COMMUNICATION CONVERSATION
Application Season
T
he day after Labor Day, my phone predictably starts to ring – a lot. September calls are mostly parents of high school seniors facing college applications. Their offspring have been back at school long enough for the joint parent/child conference with the college counselor to have occurred and the flood of work involved to have started – hard on all involved, especially with deadlines. Yes, applying to college is a lot of work on top of Advanced Placement courses, varsity sports and the universal desire to enjoy senior year. Applying to college can become something that gets in the way, often by surprise in scope, causing perpetual procrastination. Parents who’ve already been through it are pros. But for the uninitiated or vets, here are some tips to help all through the college application season: First, relax and learn. Feeling confused and overwhelmed initially is normal. Convert those nerves into energy. Although your senior must do the tests and the writing himself or herself, parents can really help by channeling their efforts into the “name, rank and serial number” stuff of listing
addresses, recording stats/activities (after all, you drove to most of them!) and keeping multiple college deadlines straight. Second, write that all-important letter of positive, parental information requested by the college counselor, and get it in early – like now. This is your best chance for a positive impact, mom and dad! Counselors have many recommendation letters to write and appreciate detailed information they can use on each student. They may share what you say in their own letter, which neither you nor your senior will ever see, but most colleges will. Yet be truthful! Exaggerations may cast doubt on the entire missive, rendering it useless. Third, plan college visits. Try to include one weekday when current students are in classes. Schedule timing to hit the information session/tour. Your own senior should make observational notes to write supplements later. Fourth, balance weekend time – homework, sports, college apps. The more competitive the schools you’re applying to, the more time will be needed to write and edit. Here’s a suggestion: Plan late mornings for college apps after a good night’s sleep and a

protein-packed breakfast. Finally, provide support – and don’t nag. Seniors need a heartfelt hug!

PORT KEEPS PLAYING WELL IN BIG TOURNEYS
Seven-time United States Golf Association champion Ellen Port reached Round 32 in the 58th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Port, the No. 2 seed from St. Louis, earned a solid 6-and-5 victory over fellow Missourian Kathy Glennon of Wildwood, at the 5,732-yard par-72 at Cedar Rapids Country Club. “I was steady – I think I missed maybe one fairway and two greens,” says Port, who has won this championship three times, most recently in 2016. “Kathy’s a really good player, and we’ve played a lot of golf together. She’s not the person you want to draw because she’s a great putter, steady, a fierce competitor. But by her admission, she was a little bit out of sync.” Glennon was making her third appearance in the tourney. She qualified for it by shooting an impressive 74 on July 29 at Aberdeen Golf Club. Port, who shot a 145 in stroke play, lost her round-of-32 match to Sue Wooster of Australia. Wooster, who shot a 156 in stroke play, defeated Kim Eaton of Mesa, Arizona, 4 and 3 in her round-of-64 match. Wooster ended Port’s tourney play with a 1-up victory.

BERKMEYER MISSES CUT Although Town and Country’s Skip Berkmeyer earned another berth in a United States Golf Association tournament, he failed to capitalize on doing so. Berkmeyer missed the 145 cut in the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship played at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina, finishing 19-over with a 159 on rounds of 83 and 76. Berkmeyer has played in the U.S. Amateur 10 times – this being his 31st USGA championship.
NIENHAUS WINS AT WINGHAVEN Drew Nienhaus, a junior at St. Joseph’s Academy, completed her summer season of golf in the Gateway PGA Junior Tour Championship by capturing the twoday tourney played at WingHaven Country Club. Nienhaus claimed the girls’ tour division and overall titles by shooting rounds of 73 and 79 for an 8-over 152 win. Coming in second was her Angels sophomore teammate Mia Rallo, who finished with a 153 on rounds of 76 and 77. “Summer competition is now over, and I’m focused on a strong high school season,” Nienhaus says. “We have a great time together and Coach [Carol] Fromuth is a legend to play for. We want to win state again.”
GUYOT DOES LIKEWISE In the summer season-ending tournament for local junior golfers, Chaminade junior Jack Guyot captured

the two-tournament at Gateway PGA Junior Tour Championship at WingHaven Country Club. He finished with an even 144 on rounds of 66 and 78 to claim the boys’ tour division and overall titles. “It was a good confidence-booster and a good reminder that even if I have a bad start, I can always come back,” Guyot says.
YOUNG GOLFERS EXCEL IN OPTIMIST CHAMPIONSHIP
Several local young golfers did well at the recent Optimist International Junior Golf Championship. The event took place on the Blue Monster Course (6,698 yards) and the Golden Palm (6,741) at Doral Resort and Spa. All three boys in the 14 to 15 age group made the cut to be among the top 70 players. Maxwell Sigman of Dardenne Prarie, a sophomore at Fort Zumwalt West, finished 40th overall at 22 over par; he shot
rounds of 80-79-78 for a 237. Trip Sanfelippo of Wildwood, a sophomore at Lafayette, came in 58th at 25 over par; he shot rounds of 82-80-78 for a 240. Ryan Walsh of Chesterfield, a sophomore at Chaminade, was 63rd and finished 29 over par; he shot rounds of 83-79-82 for a 244. Boys 16 to 18 played two rounds on the Blue Monster and one on Golden Palm. Curt Hastie, a junior at Chaminade, failed to make the 54-hole cut; he shot rounds of 82, 83 and 81 for a 246, which was 31 over par. Neither of the two local girls in the 15 to 18 age group made the 54-hole cut. The girls played two rounds on the Red Tiger Course and one round on the Golden Palm Course. Drew Neinhaus, a junior at St. Joseph’s Academy, shot rounds of 79-81-87 for a 32-over par 247. Momo Kikuchi, a senior at Pattonville, had rounds of 78-87-84 for a 35-over 250.
METROPOLITAN OPEN CHANGES VENUE
Because of an opportunity for the Country Club of St. Albans’ Lewis & Clark Course to host the 2020 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Championships mostly concurrent with the Metropolitan Open Championship, the latter competition is changing venues for next year, its 15th. Lake Forest Golf & Country Club in Lake St. Louis will host what has become the premier state and regional open in the Midwest, which will take place next June 16 to 20. The Lewis & Clark Course hosted the first 14 such championships. Mel Rector, Lake Forest member, led the charge for the club to host the event.

Dinner ...
S
ince May, local culinary devotees have been savoring sandwiches, steaks, seafood and other dishes at the West End Bistro, which serves lunch and dinner in St. Louis’ DeBaliviere Place neighborhood. The restaurant, which replaced Pig & Pickle in that space, comes from the husband-and-wife duo of Kevin and Marion Green, with co-owner Gina McCurry. The Greens each have nearly 30 years of experience in hospitality; they met 11 years ago while employed at Clayton’s famed Saint Louis Club, where Marion Green worked as a server and restaurant manager for 28 years. Kevin Green’s formal training as a chef comes from Louisville, Kentucky-based Sullivan University,

as well as The Culinary Institute of America in New York. Since then, he’s led kitchens at a senior living facility and at Kreis’ Steakhouse in Frontenac. He also previously cooked at Guido’s “on The Hill” in St. Louis and Charlie Gitto’s. “It’s a place that is for families and friends from the neighborhood to feel welcomed,” Marion Green says of the West End Bistro, which marks her and her husband’s debut in restaurant ownership. “Our food caters to whoever comes in, from casual to fine dining. It’s traditional cuisine with global influences.” The dining area, which accommodates 60 guests, received the Greens’ personal touch, with a contemporary ambiance highlighted by warm tones, vibrant aquarium imagery displayed on flat-screen TVs

Highlights from the menu include The West End, with twin pork rib-eyes, mashed sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables and caramelized apple demi-glace. Another popular pick, shrimp and grits, features blackened shrimp, white cheddar grits, bayou gravy and seasonal vegetables. Additional specialties include pan-seared crabcakes with soubise and crispy leeks; French onion soup with Swiss cheese gratiné; and bouillabaisse with mussels, scallops, shrimp, crab legs, fennel, tomato-saffron broth, a baguette and the fish du jour. Sandwiches include a chicken club with grilled chicken, lettuce, jalapeño, tomato, onion and bacon jam on a brioche; a turkey croissant with smoked turkey,

Swiss cheese, cranberry mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions; and a bistro burger with cheddar, bacon, barbecue sauce and fried onions. To drink, guests can choose from a wine list, as well as the Everyday Bistro, a drink special that features a mix of punch with the bartender’s choice of rum, vodka or gin. Between the cuisine and the libations there, in fact, theatergoers should have no reason to equivocate about visiting the West End Bistro before taking in Two to Tango from the St. Louis Actors’ Studio. “I tried to cook what I think St. Louis is familiar with, from steaks and sandwiches to pastas,” Kevin Green says. “My goal was just to be diverse with the food. All the dishes are cooked to order. That way, I can tailor the food to the customer.”

Story: Adam’s feeling frisky about being alone with his wife, Jan. For the first time in what seems like ages, with their 9-year-old son away for the night at a sleepover, the middle-aged couple has time for just the two of them. Unlike Adam, though, Jan isn’t focused exclusively on jumping into the sack. She’s feeling a lot of pressure from her job, trying to transition from being a wannabe New York City dancer to making a living to help pay the bills for their renovated brownstone and their son’s expensive school tuition. Adam co-owns an architectural firm but has become increasingly dissatisfied with the lackluster projects he’s taken just to keep it afloat. He’s been out of town quite a bit, which Jan doesn’t think much about – until she answers the phone and the woman on the other end of the line ends the conversation quickly. Jan feels fine with the plentiful romance and sex to be had – so long as she meets an impending business deadline. Adam says he wants to reignite the flames of his relationship with Jan, whom he says still attracts him. As the night progresses, however, Jan begins to wonder why Adam has been gone so often. Has Adam underestimated his wife’s ability to recognize distress signals in their marriage? Does enough passion remain in the relationship to steer it past troubling roadblocks? And are Adam and Jan responsible for their son’s stress and peculiar behavior? Highlights: St. Louis Actors’ Studio opens its 13th season, themed “Two to Tango,” with a bristling presentation of Michael Weller’s acerbic examination of a modern marriage. Other Info: A news release from the troupe observes: “With the sort of clarity and theatrical density that only the two-hander can achieve, the season of exclusively two-character plays will journey through our most closely complex relationships: Mentor and apprentice, husband and wife, mother and child.” Director John Pierson starts that season with this sizzling battle of the sexes between a husband with some surprising secrets and a strong-willed wife with just enough vulnerability to keep emotional wounds open and festering. Weller’s story unfolds in one act and roughly 90 minutes of performance time, leavening its savage structure with interludes of breezy comedy and several moments of sexual contact, both flirtatious and more overt. The alternating scenes of caustic conversation and tender interludes make Fifty Words seem like an updated version of Edward Albee’s classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, although less cerebral and certainly not as incisive. Julie Layton and Isaiah Di Lorenzo, who play the couple, finely convey the nuances as well as the volcanic explosions in their relationship. Layton excels in depicting Jan’s view of the marriage, setting up the

contrasts in her character in naturalistic fashion: Jan can coldly recall telling Adam she didn’t want children because she wasn’t cut out to be a mother – then react frantically when the two of them receive a call with potentially distressing news about their son. Di Lorenzo shows his character dancing among moments of sexual bravado, fond recollections of his first date with Jan and genuine concern for his son from a different perspective. It’s odd, though, how Adam never says Jan’s name until near the play’s end. Pierson wisely navigates his two players through the shoals of marital uncertainty, keeping his audience off-kilter with this savvy interpretation of Weller’s two characters, especially Layton’s impressive presentation of Jan’s tightrope of emotions and cool, calculated responses. Director and performers make the most of Sammy Kriesch’s cozy scenic design, which squeezes a kitchen and a living room upfront as well as stairs at stage left leading to an offstage bedroom and a door at stage right to the brownstone’s unseen front door. Paintings on the walls complement the upscale look. Weir has a knack for realistic dialogue, with memorable lines like “I hate when you do that calm, sarcastic thing” and “We were just learning how to hate each other then.” He owes considerable thanks to Albee as a kind of godfather for Fifty Words, which incidentally refers to Jan’s wish that that many synonyms for love existed. Many married people doubtless will recognize their own best and worst natures in Adam and Jan, while perhaps others can thank their stars that they don’t. Regardless, Fifty Words will keep your attention as you wonder what will happen to this star-crossed pair.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… 2017 BUCCI – VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DI JESI Grape: 100% Verdicchio Location: Ostra Vetere, Province of Ancona, Le Marche, Italy Owner: Ampelio Bucci Winemaker: Giorgio Grai Approximate Retail Price: $20 Website: villabucci.com TASTING NOTES: Color: Hues of honey, light gold and Tuscan sun; transparent and bright Aroma: Rich bouquet of perfume and white flowers, leading into Golden Delicious apple and a hint of almond Taste: Rich texture; complex flavors of apple, pineapple and honeysuckle
A
VIP trip to Bucci winery in Italy would result in being greeted at the gates with your very own half-bottle of the Verdicchio, with a colored straw through which to sip as you tour the grounds, vineyards, winery and museum,
thus immediately relaxing you from fear of any of the pretentiousness so common in the world of wine. The Bucci family has farmed and made wine since the 1700s, making them one of the oldest producers of the region. The winery sits amid the Castelli di Jesi (“Castles of Jesi”) in the Marche region, on the east coast of central Italy. Rich with history, the Castelli refers to the several hilltop villages that surround the town of Jesi, each with its own medieval fortress. The Bucci style of wine growing and winemaking combines centuries-old traditions and practices with more modern techniques. The family begins with six different vineyards, all at different elevations, soil types and slopes that face in all directions. The vines planted, which are carefully selected from Bucci’s own nursery, average 35 years old. The vineyards are all vinified separately and then blended before bottling. The winery itself, being underground, maintains constant cool temperatures,

making artificial refrigeration during the winemaking and barrel aging unnecessary. The winemakers have also been established as 100 percent organic, having used neither herbicides nor pesticides in the vineyards. Ampelio Bucci and Giorgio Grai’s style for their Verdicchio sort of goes against the Italian tradition to produce light-bodied, crisp white wines. Aging in large neutral oak barrels encourages the wine’s complexity and structure without harsh tannins or oak flavors. It’s aged longer before being blended and bottled, which helps ensure the wine’s durability and aging potential. As a result, Bucci produces a rich, round, complex and deliciously satisfying wine that can be enjoyed on any occasion, year-round, and for years to come. Food Pairings: The Verdicchio pairs nicely with lobster bisque, firm cheeses, hors d’oeuvres and light dishes with white fish.

Commission bust in finish process

A Frontenac sculptor creates soulful busts and other works of art that border on the sublime.
O
f all the plastic arts – loosely, visual art, distinguished from, say, music or literature – perhaps none petrifies congenitally fumble-fingered sorts more than sculpture – yet sculptor Katie Bensky makes that art look effortless. In addition to teaching all-level sculpture classes in her home studio in Frontenac and at University City’s Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, Bensky spends her days sculpting predominantly human subjects “in ceramic clay – either earthenware [coarser baked clay], terra cotta or paper clay [clay infused with cellulosic fiber].” Despite an ironic twist, an element of inexorability characterizes her choice of callings. Much earlier in her life, according to Bensky’s website, actual plastic may well have inspired her future interest in sculpture, as she meticulously assembled model aircraft. “I don’t have detailed memories of how I came to spend countless hours on the kitchen floor gluing parts of model airplanes together,” Bensky says. “Only in retrospect has it occurred to me the correlation between my affinity for 3D sculpture and these early childhood memories. “I think all children’s actions are inspired by those quiet inner voices – and our job as parents is to help guide them toward those early calls.” Despite her interest in polystyrene aircraft, Bensky earned a Bachelor
of Business Administration degree in marketing from Des Moines, Iowa’s Drake University – and then calendar pages started fluttering away. “It took me quite a few years and careers to realize the importance of ‘following one’s bliss,’” she says, borrowing a catchphrase from famed comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell. “In high school – Ladue Horton Watkins – I spent as many hours as I could making art, ceramics in particular. It never dawned on me that art could be a viable career choice. “But as the years passed, my yearning to sculpt the figure/head in clay grew. I believe very much in fate. I was introduced to a sculpting class taught by Bob Walker at John Burroughs School. I instantly fell in love with the class and continued on to Fontbonne University, where I received my M.A. in sculpture.” A study of works displayed on Bensky’s website suggests a marked affinity for masks, busts and, to a lesser extent, torsos. “When I began, I had a strong yearning to find a class where I could learn how to mold a portrait head in clay,” she recalls. “I’m not certain where this came from, and to this day, I’m most attracted to the forms of the face, be it a portrait of a child or a much larger-thanlife, mildly abstracted head. Nonetheless, I love bringing clients’ ideas and visions to fruition in any figurative form.”

Whether among her commissioned or noncommissioned sculptures, Bensky’s works similarly suggest an impressive grasp of the nuances of expression. A bust titled Surrender, for instance, radiates sheer jubilation, with its subject’s eyes closed and chin tilted upward beneath a small, blissful smile. A terra-cotta piece titled Sydney, meanwhile, depicts a gamin whose faintly disbelieving grin tempts one to laugh aloud, and The Crown, a third ceramic bust, exhibits a near-supernal grace – grace, that is, verging on Grace – via features sculpted with almost Euclidian exactitude. Not unpredictably, the process of sculpting a bust or other, similar work can entail differing efforts and times – “anywhere from two to six months and even longer,” Bensky estimates – from start to finish. “This really depends if one is working from a live model or photographs,” she explains. “Recently, my work has been from images that are taken in the round, from many different angles. I offer this as part of the package – unless, of course, I’m working on a project where the subject is deceased, in which case we make do with what we have. “Once the photos are in place, it’s really a matter of slowly building up the forms with constant reference to the images. I don’t rely on calipers – a device used for measuring – though recently I have found it very helpful when appropriate. “Once I feel a portrait or other commission work is close to completion, I send photos for client approval. The piece must then completely dry for three to four weeks before being placed in the kiln for firing. There are many different choices for finishes. And there’s always the choice to have a mold

made that could then be cast in bronze or other materials.” In naming personal favorites among her predecessors in the plastic arts, Bensky leans toward “the usual suspects,” to borrow a phrase from the cinematic classic Casablanca. “[High Renaissance Italian artist, architect and poet] Michelangelo is a favorite sculptor for the obvious reasons,” she says. “Carving the figure from hard stone, in contrast to the gracious and forgiving clay medium I work with, seems unimaginable. “Another favorite sculptor is [France’s 18th/19th-century Auguste] Rodin. I admire his ability to emotionally express the inner truths of the human being. This is something I always strive for, either in portrait work or some of my more recent meditative, figurative work.” Finally, it bears noting that many of Bensky’s works involve youngsters, for a rather poignant reason – one that resonates, ironically, across millennia. “I adore children’s faces – and since I’m a recent empty nester, I know too well how fleeting the years fly by,” she says. “As beautiful as a 2D portrait is, there’s nothing that captures those adorable chubby cheeks quite as well as a 3D sculpture, in my opinion. … One of my earlier commissions consisted of portraits to celebrate the milestone of turning 13 and becoming bar and bat mitzvahed.” And the millennial resonance? For that, one need only turn to Genesis 2:7: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Katie Bensky Sculpture, 314-378-0276, katiebenskysculpture.org
