EDITOR WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, I OFTEN QUESTIONED MY MOM’S interior design choices: old lanterns on display, gold fixtures installed throughout the kitchen and dining room, and floral wallpaper covering multiple rooms. Today, though, my mom’s brand of rustic-meets-contemporary décor has become increasingly trendy once again, and I can only shake my head in denial that mother may know best after all. In this week’s Abode section, Ladue News digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter talks to local interior designers to learn about how brass has become increasingly popular in homes today. Not only do the designers detail the trend, but also they share different ways to incorporate it into your abode, whether subtly or dramatically. We hope you enjoy this feature, starting on p. 25. Also in this week’s edition, Ladue News contributing writer Mary Mack talks to Wink iBoutique Lash & Brow Bar founder Christina Passanise about her booming business and the growing popularity of her services, including microblading, lash extensions, keratin lash lifts and more. We hope you enjoy learning about what goes into each of these beauty services and also the custom products Passanise created for her business, as detailed starting on p. 42 All the best,

belief in beauty is evident throughout each of Studio Branca’s two salons and its academy. That beauty shines brightest in the service providers and students who dedicate themselves to the art of transformation through hair styling and rejuvenating spa services. The flagship location in Creve Coeur opened in March 1989, with a team of eight stylists. Studio Branca has since grown to 100 employees across multiple locations. “In the almost three decades since Studio Branca opened its doors in Creve Coeur, we have truly been blessed,” president and owner Mark Branca says. “Each time our business has called for expansion, space has become available.” The new Chesterfield Valley location opened in July of this year to rave reviews and has been nominated for Salon Today’s “Salon of the Year.” “With the help of our architect [Christi Johaningmeyer, owner of Webster Groves’ Architextures], we worked to create a beautiful and modern space,” describes Branca. “We added about 30 percent more square footage to accommodate our growing business and our new medical spa in Chesterfield.” A commitment to education is what led Branca to co-found, in 2006, The Salon Professional Academy, which has a reputation as a top-rated cosmetology school. “Our school is a separate business from our salon company,” notes Branca. “[Yet,] we utilize the same methodology and training in our salons.” This passion for education does not stop with the academy; it is a constant focus within the salons, as well. “Our team of professionals receives world-class training,” says Branca. This year alone through its global education, Studio Branca has sent team members to Los Angeles, New York and Copenhagen, with a team of eight headed to Italy in November. “It’s a career path – not a job,” explains Branca. “We believe that by focusing on our team’s personal success, our care will translate to our guests’ exceptional experience.” Employee benefits are a remarkable point of difference separating Studio Branca from other salon companies. “My vision is for Studio Branca to be the finest salon company in the world, so our benefits need to align with that goal,” explains Branca. “My legacy plan is for our company to ultimately be 100 percent employee-owned. In the beauty industry, to offer these benefits is almost unheard of. That is significant. It’s next level.” A large part of the Branca culture is celebrating the accomplishments of its team. Since Studio Branca opened its doors almost 30 years ago, 54 diamond pendants have been handed out to commemorate 10 years of service with the company. “Ten years is quite a milestone – and we like to celebrate it!,” declares Branca. Along with the company’s exponential growth, Studio Branca now operates two full med spas, with medical-grade treatments available for its clientele. “It’s a very exciting time for us,” says Branca. “I want the legacy of Studio Branca to [continue] on beyond me – and I truly believe our best years are ahead of us.” Studio Branca | Creve Coeur, 12627 Olive Blvd., 314-469-1222; Studio Branca | Chesterfield Valley, 17227 Chesterfield Airport Road, 636-536-1615; studiobranca.com; The Salon Professional Academy, 3141 W. group of sporting clay aficionados recently gathered at St. Charles’ Strathalbyn Farms Club to participate in the third annual Pull for Fathers Sporting Clays Tournament benefiting the Fathers’ Support Center. This year’s event completely sold out, as sportsmen spent the afternoon on the club’s shooting facilities before enjoying cocktails on the clubhouse patio. A program and dinner followed, as well as a live auction for hunting packages and the awarding of prizes to the day’s best shooters. In total, the event raised more than $90,000 for the many programs of the Fathers’ Support Center, which helps foster healthy relationships by strengthening families and communities.

All Among Us
INAUGURAL FUNDRAISER
A
Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
ll Among Us held its first fundraiser, projected as an annual event, in August at St. Louis’ Third Degree Glass Factory. Funds from it benefit a women’s care center scheduled to open its doors in Ferguson next month. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and dinner provided by food trucks from Zia’s on the Hill and Cha Cha Chow. Pure Nectar provided the live music, and Mike Moran of Third Degree Glass Factory demonstrated glassblowing. Emceeing the evening – which featured presentations by Dawn Stringfield, Lisa Alexander and Cathryn Shaw – was media personality Tim Ezell. All Among Us, a nonprofit organization, strives to break the cycle of generational poverty and provide long-term transitional housing for single women for up to two years. The forthcoming care center will coordinate specialized programs in such areas as life skills, mental health service coordination, housing assistance, and art and creative experiences.

And so it was with the aptly-named local nonprofit, The Next Step. In 2005, a small group of people wanted to help a friend – in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, and financially struggling – cover the costs of her education. With their assistance, the woman successfully graduated from a local university. This single act of generosity blossomed into something more, sparking the formation of The Next Step, which provides much-needed tuition assistance to individuals active in recovery from alcohol or substance abuse. Through a rigorous online and in-person application process, The Next Step awards financial aid to individuals seeking to begin or to continue undergraduate, graduate or vocational degree programs. The nonprofit confers up to $5,000 per year to undergraduate students and up to $3,000 per year to graduate students. Each scholarship is renewable, with the funds going directly to the given institution. Recipients must demonstrate one continuous year of sobriety or clean time, participate in a 12-step recovery program and maintain at least part-time employment. “The Next Step has grown, pretty much every year, by word of mouth,” says board president Darcy Glidewell. “We’ve increased the number of scholarships and the amount of money allocated to each recipient.” Thirteen years since its launch, it has distributed more than $965,000 in scholarship money and witnessed hundreds of individuals rebuild

People become more productive members of society, better providers for their families and better siblings, neighbors and employees. In many ways, their triumphs help the St. Louis community.”
“We really focus on celebrating our recipients at the dinner,” shares Glidewell. Scholarship awardees volunteer at the event, but then get to sit down for dinner amongst the donors, who sponsor their seats. “We want to acknowledge everything that these recipients have achieved. It’s so important that they know how much we want them to succeed.”

MIDCENTURY COLORFUL By Robyn Dexter
P
atrice Munden of Patrice Munden Interior Design was excited when she found out she’d get to work on a house in the only Missouri neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places: Ladue Estates. After living in Texas for a while, the former Creve Coeur clients returned to their previous home and heard about Munden from a friend. They wanted to renovate and update the residence and embrace the midcentury modern feel they loved. “They like a lot of color,” Munden says. “Even though they wanted modern and up-to-date furniture, they still wanted that throwback midcentury modern feel. As much as they like the style, they didn’t want a museum-type feel in the house, though.” Munden and her clients hunted down and purchased some art from the era, decorating and sprucing up the house for the friends and family they like to entertain. “The whole look of the house is open and clean,” Munden says. “Once we started gathering some pieces, everything fell into place.”

Brass Bold As

The alluring alloy is staging a residential comeback in several exciting ways, as area experts explain.
F
or decades, stainless steel and chrome finishes have dominated the design industry, leaving one of the formerly trendiest metals – brass – in the dust. Over the course of the past few years, however, brass has been making a slow and steady comeback, reasserting itself as a fun finish for everything from light fixtures to cabinet pulls. Brass was a shiny staple in houses designed in the 1970s and ’80s, but the brass that’s making its way back into homes isn’t as bold as its popular predecessor 40 years ago. Instead, it’s being integrated in a matte finish, making a subdued statement on hardware and accessories across the country. “People have tired of the stainless and brushed nickel trends,” says Kathleen Matthews, interior designer at Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue. “The brass we are seeing today is a softer brass than before; most brass pieces are an unlacquered brass or a soft gold.” Lauren Sweet-Schuler of Castle Design in Clayton believes brass is making a comeback because of its warm tones and how nicely it complements warm gray tones. “I’m seeing it incorporated in many ways,” she says. “It starts in small doses and makes its way into every room.” To reintroduce brass to your home, Sweet-Schuler recommends starting with a smaller space, like a powder room mirror or faucet hardware. Homeowners then can move on to bigger household components like a dining room chandelier. Sweet-Schuler also recommends mixing up its uses from room to room to keep it visually interesting. “Maybe it’s hardware on a cabinet in one room and a large vase in another,” she says. “There are great ways to use it in any space.” Matthews recommends keeping the finish subtle and staying away from the polished brass of the ’70s and ’80s to avoid a dated look. She encourages pairing today’s brass with jewel tones like a rich, dark green or a regal navy for a classic look. It can also be paired with marble in accent furniture pieces. “The organic vibe of marble and the more industrial feel of brass can result in a dramatic cocktail table or dining room table,” she says. Lisa Davis, visual merchandising specialist with KDR Designer Showrooms near Maryland Heights, suggests pairing brass with everything from acrylic to more natural elements. “My personal favorite is brass and acrylic, mixed together, or wood and brass for a more rustic but elegant feel,” she says. Like Matthews and Sweet-Schuler, she’s seeing many clients starting to introduce brass into their lighting fixtures and home accessories.
“It’s an easy, inexpensive way to incorporate brass in any space, and a little goes a long way,” she says. Although pendants and cabinet hardware reign as the most popular brass accessories right now, Matthews suggests a few unexpected ways to bring brass into your home. A modern bar cart? Yes, please. “The finish makes the bar cart a little unexpected but also takes a functional accent piece to a new level,” she says. “A metallic brass finish is also being used in wall tiles. These tiles would make a dramatic and memorable backsplash in a residential bar area.” Whether through subtle touches or dramatic elements, brass can be installed throughout the home as an eye-catching and striking design element. Its new matte appearance is making its way into brands across their entire line in modern, state-of-the-art pieces. Sweet-Schuler advocates for the metal – but in a smart way. “Brass is a finish often found in older homes,” she says, “so updating with the new matte brass finish still feels cohesive with exiting elements, while staying on-trend with the new warmer version.” Only time will tell how long the fad continues its resurgence in the design world, but for now, designers like Matthews are enjoying its revival. “Having been in design in the ’80s and ’90s, I was sorry to see [the brass trend] fade away,” Matthews says. “The resurgence of the unlacquered brass and gold tones is exciting! Put your best face forward at first-of-their-kind lash and brow studios in the metro area.
T
he interior of Wink iBoutique Lash & Brow Bar in Town and Country is decidedly casual. A tufted couch anchors the trendy waiting room, which is sprinkled with gold accent pieces and features a cute – and convenient – coffee bar for clients. Top-40 tracks fill the space, and exposed brick keeps the consultation rooms cozy. But the story of Wink iBoutique is anything but casual. From launching two locations in 10 months to hiring and training a dozen expert employees, not to mention creating her own brand of eyelash extensions and adhesives, owner and creator Christina Passanise has been serious about her business from the start. The first of its kind in the metro area, Wink iBoutique offers microblading, lash extensions, keratin lash lifts and henna eyebrow tinting, as well as a full menu of facial services including spa treatments and event airbrush makeup. An aesthetician with close to 18 years of experience, St. Louis-born Passanise began her career doing facials for various spas in the area before earning certifications in lash extensions, skin

treatments, airbrush makeup, micropigmentation and microblading. For nine years, Passanise built up her own devoted clientele, renting studio space out of Clare’s of Clayton Salon, before realizing she needed more space. “I was so busy that I needed to hire, train and expand,” she says. “I was booked out six months in advance for lash extensions. My sister-in-law was the first to join me, and I realized that we quickly needed more space to grow.” So in September 2016, Passanise opened Wink iBoutique Lash & Brow Bar in Clayton. “I was looking for a space in Clayton to start,” Passanise says of her fourroom flagship studio. “I was careful in choosing the first space, not knowing how fast we would grow.” The community response was positive, leading Passanise to open a sister location in Town and Country in July 2017. The second location was met with just as much enthusiasm as the first, so much so that she and her team plan to move into a larger space across the parking lot this coming spring. So how have Passanise and her staff earned the support of both communities so quickly? To start, her staff is extensively trained through a six-month apprenticeship, where they perfect their skills in Wink’s lash, brow and skin services. For example, when it comes to eyebrow microblading – a manual method of depositing a small amount of pigment in the uppermost layer of skin using disposable hand tools composed of very fine needle points to fill brows out – this hands-on apprenticeship makes all the difference. “We are extremely careful not to scar the skin tissue,” Passanise says. “A lot of people will get two-day training without a lot of hands-on experience before

Happily Ever After
Fiona and the
MANN FAMILY
By Robyn Dexter
wanted a dog. After she and her husband, Ben, got married, she wanted the next addition to the family to be a dog. Ben’s family used to foster dogs when he was younger, but Erin’s family didn’t get a dog until she was away at college, and she wanted one of her own. She knew that she didn’t want a puppy and that she wanted a pit bull mix of some sort from a shelter. Once she started perusing Petfinder.com, she discovered Even Chance Pit Bull Rescue. She saw two dogs that piqued her interest, and she messaged the group’s vice president, Heather Roberts. Though the two dogs had been adopted that day, Roberts had another dog in mind for the newlyweds. Fiona had been found running around East St. Louis with a pack of smaller dogs. She was brought to Even Chance and was adopted. Unfortunately, she was returned to Even Chance only a week later. The then-2year-old pit bull mix didn’t fit well with her previous family because of her high energy levels, but Erin and Ben were intrigued by the sweetfaced pup. “We went to meet her and really liked her,” Erin says. “She was super-hyper and chasing squirrels in the yard.” They didn’t adopt her just yet, though. The Manns left for their honeymoon just two days after seeing Fiona at her foster family’s house and decided to mull her adoption over while they were gone. The day they got back, though, Ben mentioned he wanted to go see Fiona again. “We were ready to sign the papers and were going to adopt her on a Wednesday,” Erin says. “But we got a call on Tuesday morning that there had been a fire at the foster family’s house.”
46 September 28, 2018 | LadueNews.com
Fiona had been in a crate in the master bedroom, but if her crate had been anywhere else, she wouldn’t have survived. She licked the firefighter who rescued her all the way out of the house through her crate. The Manns brought Fiona home shortly after, on Jan. 10 of this year. The first night they had her wasn’t easy, though. “The first night in her crate, she was thrashing around,” Erin recalls. “I think she had a little [post-traumatic stress disorder] from the fire.” After that first night, though, Fiona has been a model citizen. She just turned 3 years old and went
through training with No Leash Needed, where she picked up manners and tricks in just a short amount of time. “We dropped her off in the morning, and by that afternoon, she’d already learned so much,” Erin says. Fiona’s favorite things include going for walks and “any toy we give her, even though they’re usually destroyed within 10 minutes,” Erin says. Fiona has never met a stranger and loves everyone she meets. Although her energy levels are high, she crashes at the end of the day and turns into a snuggle bug. “She adds so much life to our life and is so much fun,” Erin says. “We have a lot of love to give, and I’m glad she’s the one receiving it.”

Jump-Starting the College Essay
I
By Janis Murray
’ve been working this month with many rising high school seniors who are preparing their essays and supplements for college. They are getting a jump-start because they realize homework and all the joys of being a senior are coming up soon. Then they’ll get hit with the huge job of applying to college, and it is huge. The job starts with the common application essay of 650 words that will go to most or all of the colleges you apply to. For most, it is the first time someone – a stranger, a decision-maker – asks essentially, “Who might you be as a citizen of the world?” Geez! My son had never been asked that when he was 17, which is partly why I started this company almost 20 years ago. A clear message about who you are is critical to acceptance. Colleges today almost plead for a picture of who you really are. Some applications go so far as to say, “A real person will read this” or “Give us a picture of yourself.” The common application provides several prompts to guide applicants, and practically anything you write could fit one of them, but still many applicants get stuck on how to start. First, don’t be afraid of not being good enough.
A clear message about who you are is critical to acceptance. Colleges today almost plead for a picture of who you really are. Thinking about the thousands of other applicants as competition will not help. Instead, focus on who you are. Fear is negative energy that can be turned into a positive if you just focus on what you bring to the table. What have you done? What have you learned from it? How does it affect your thinking moving forward? Stop worrying about that word count. It holds you back from telling your story. If the unedited version comes out to 1,000 words, it can always be edited – and might be better and more succinct that way. I’ve had
essays come in for MBA applications that were 1,200 words when the limit was 750. Most often, after editing, students are amazed that their story is better shortened and specific. Also, don’t try to be too formal. I commonly see this, and admissions committees can easily see through it. Such committees read thousands of essays and recognize patterns immediately. In some cases, The Wall Street Journal reported this month that there are so many applications now that a team of two undergraduate students may be the first to read your essay and decide if it goes forward. Yuck! So take a chance. All you have to do is grab your readers’ attention and keep it. Be lively, be original, relax and just go for it! There’s a perfect-fit college for everyone!

lisse Camazine considers herself a lucky lady. She feels fortunate that she had good health insurance and did not have to deal with the added trauma of being uninsured or underinsured at the time
of her breast cancer diagnosis in 1995. “I was 41 with three children – ages 2, 5 and 8 – and all I could think about at the time was that if I died, my family would be devastated and my children would not remember me.” Camazine, now 64, says her gynecologist found her breast cancer during a routine checkup. “I had a double mastectomy, reconstruction and then a massive heart attack from a blood clot after three or four treatments of chemotherapy,” she adds. Today, Camazine, who has been an award-winning and highly respected family law attorney in Clayton for more than 30 years, is healthy and wants to make a difference. “The statistics are alarming,” she says. “We all have to acknowledge that everyone knows someone who has breast cancer. Just imagine what it would be like to have a diagnosis of cancer and be uninsured or underinsured. What do you do? Where do you go? Will you get treatment or forgo it because you need the money for formula for your baby, school clothes for your kids or to put food on the table? This is the terrifying dilemma many women in the St. Louis area are faced with every day because one out of eight women will face a diagnosis of breast cancer during her lifetime.” To help those less fortunate, Camazine has joined forces with fellow breast cancer survivors Susie Knopf and Elizabeth Mannen to co-chair KaleidoHope, Gateway to Hope’s ninth annual dinner gala, to be held Oct. 19 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton. Gateway to Hope is a breast cancer lifeline founded by David A. Caplin, M.D., and Marlys E. Schuh, M.D. Camazine is passionate about her belief that good health care is essential for everyone. In 2004, she and her brother, a retired surgeon who lives in Texas, founded Earthwide Surgical Foundation, a nonprofit that provides medical and surgical needs to people in underprivileged third world countries. “I have been to Nigeria many times, and I am acutely aware of insurance needs,” Camazine says. “The horrors seen there because people do not have insurance or good health care are heartbreaking. I have seen 20-pound breast cancer tumors and facial tumors the size of a head.” Born and raised in Westchester, New York, Camazine is a 1976 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and a 1979 graduate of Saint Louis University School of Law. Camazine started her law firm, Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C., 24 years ago with just 13 lawyers. In her years of practice, she has become one of the leading family law practitioners in
the St. Louis area, focusing on child custody, complex divorce and property litigation. “It has been important to me that people get support in the divorce process,” she says. “I try to be the agent of reality and tell people what is likely to happen. They need to know upfront.” In recognition of her outstanding work, Best Lawyers, the longtime legal peer-review company, named her 2010 Family Law Lawyer of the Year. Among many other awards, she has received the Women’s Justice Award for Trial Practice in 2009 from Lawyers Media, which recognizes women who have demonstrated leadership, integrity, service, sacrifice and accomplishment in improving the quality of justice and furthering the highest ideals of the legal profession. She is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and the Top 50: 2018 Women Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers Top List. Married for 33 years to Mark Ellebrecht, an attorney she met at Saint Louis University, she praises her husband, who has chosen to be “a stay-at-home dad” since 1998. “I think we have great kids in large part because Mark stayed at home with them,” she says. “Our family also shares a love of travel that has enriched all of our lives.” Camazine says Gateway to Hope’s mission is “near and dear to me because I remember having discussions with my kids about health insurance. Why should some little boy’s mother die when yours didn’t? Gateway to Hope isn’t just about saving women; it is saving families. Its mission moves me,” she says.
We all have to acknowledge that everyone knows someone who has breast cancer. Just imagine what it would be like to have a diagnosis of cancer and be uninsured or underinsured.

“I
f one could divine the nature of the economic forces in the world, one could foretell the future,” Robert L. Heilbroner, the American economist and historian of economic theory, once asserted, and in that context, an unusual local institution assists visitors not so much in predicting tomorrow as apprehending today. That institution occupies slightly less than 6,000 square feet of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, one of the 12 regional components of this nation’s central banking system: the Inside the Economy Museum, located in the heart of downtown St. Louis. Visitors access the monolithic landmark through an entrance on a pedestrian plaza due south of the Fed. Tom Shepherd, the museum’s director, notes that it opened little more than four years ago, on Sept. 22, 2014. “Our museum was created as a part of the St. Louis Fed’s commitment to the public of making economic education and financial literacy more accessible to everyone,” he says. “The public really seems to enjoy the museum. We’ve had great reviews, multiple awards from TripAdvisor and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Go! Magazine, and a growing list of schools that have made a visit to the museum an annual field trip.” The museum, which charges no admission and greets the public each weekday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., comprises almost 100 components – interactive displays, games, sculptures and videos. Shepherd continues that it “includes the exhibit space, a classroom where we offer programs to field trips and a small gift shop. Our staff consists of two people who work full time in the museum, as well as a large group of staff from around the bank who volunteer in the museum and working with groups.” Physically, the museum comprises a quintet of “zones”: Zone 1, “The Eighth District Comes Alive”; Zone 2, “How People Make Decisions”; Zone 3, “How People Interact”; Zone 4, “The Connections Theater”; and Zone 5, “You and the Economy.” The individual zones cover such variegated topics as the seven-state territory of the Eighth Federal Reserve District, individuals’ personal financial choices, markets and trade, the Fed’s history, and interactions among governments, central banks and commercial financial institutions. Touring the museum typically takes an hour – at a given visitor’s own, self-guided pace, albeit with facilitation by the staff – and the facility, over time, has enjoyed laudable attendance. “The museum has seen on average 12,000 visitors per year, with this year looking to see closer to 14,000 visitors,” Shepherd says. “Our busy season begins in March and goes through the middle of August, with March – spring break – and July being our busiest months.” Almost necessarily, the facility fosters a robust scholastic outreach tailored to students in middle school, high school and college. That outreach includes lesson plans on topics ranging from paychecks and inflation through currency and investments to the global economy and the time value of money. The museum’s outreach also includes field-trip interactive programs with titles like Lincoln and the $5 Note and Escape the Vault, as well as student guides with both multiple-choice questions (“What does the Federal Reserve System do?”) and fill-in-the-blank posers (“What does it mean to have comparative advantage?”) for middle schoolers and high schoolers alike. Shepherd states that the museum strives to stay current with the mind-boggling mutability of today’s financial services landscape – a decade or so ago, for instance, few members of the general public had encountered such now-common terms as quant and cryptocurrency – often using technology to do so. “Our visitors really enjoy the high-tech, hands-on nature of our museum, as it’s not what most people expect when they first arrive,” he says. “We have many videos playing throughout the space, along with an interactive trading pit where visitors can buy and sell against each other to see who can make the most money.” In its ongoing efforts to be something of a memorial to moola, a gold standard of gelt, the museum, through its website, welcomes reservations (made two weeks in advance, if at all possible) for scholastic field trips and from other, nonscholastic groups ranging from 11 to 100 visitors. Groups larger than that should email the facility at economymuseum@stls.frb.org. Finally, the museum’s gift shop offers a genuinely noteworthy free souvenir, complementing sales of logoed T-shirts, totes, toys and other t’ings and reflecting the Fed’s duty to destroy currency no longer fit for circulation: shredded greenbacks.

EDUCATION Spotlight By emma dent

Whitfield School is an independent, co-educational college preparatory school in Creve Coeur that serves 440 students in grades six through 12. At Whitfield, educators take the myriad challenges faced by today’s adolescents seriously. Whitfield’s faculty and staff create an environment in which students flourish academically and as individuals with distinct interests and strengths.
T
hrough its Habits of Mind and Heart curriculum, Whitfield encourages students to develop their unique potential and to become ethical, globally minded citizens. “Our approach to preparation for college and life is through character,” explains head of school John Delautre. “Scholarship is very important to us, but it’s not more important than citizenship, ethics and mindfulness.” This character-driven approach infuses every aspect of learning at Whitfield and is carried out by an extraordinary team of teachers who are not only experts in their chosen fields, but also in educating specific age groups. “The Habits of Mind and Heart philosophy is really integrated into everything we do,” emphasizes Emily Chrysler, director of admission. “When you walk into a physics class, the teacher in that classroom cares as much about collaboration and empathy as physics itself.” Through its innovative advisory program, teachers meet several times per week with a small group of students. The advisory program complements Whitfield’s academic mission and enables teachers to “develop an awareness of students’ needs and unique characteristics,” says Chrysler. That personalized attention extends to college advising, as well. Whitfield’s college counseling program is led by two full-time counselors who endeavor to make the college admissions process as stress-free as possible for students. “We really ask parents to step back from the college counseling process,” shares Delautre. “We want our students to be the drivers, to take charge, do the research and develop longstanding relationships with their college counselors.” Whitfield’s methods have certainly proved successful. The 75 students who graduated in the class of 2018 now attend 59 universities across the globe. And, 80 percent of students in this graduating class received a merit award, amounting to nearly $3.1 million in scholarship money. On Sunday, Oct. 14, Whitfield will host an open house, where prospective students and their families can see the campus, speak with students and teachers, and get a feel for the school community. After the event, prospective students are invited to schedule a visit on campus. “Many of our kids choose to specialize in art, drama and science,” states Delautre, “but I can’t think of a student who wouldn’t thrive here.”

After settling here, Fox opened Basil Spice in 2008. She also previously owned and operated Sweet Basil Thai Cafe in downtown St. Louis and has served as a partner of The Blue Pearl, also in St. Louis, since it reopened under new ownership last year. My Thai fills approximately 1,400 square feet, with 45 seats. The contemporary design features gray and olive-green walls embellished with colorful paintings. The restaurant offers both counter service for guests on the go and table service for dining in. From the menu, guests can choose from such starters as fried shrimp rolls or pot stickers – crispy dumplings with chicken, onion, bamboo, carrots and garlic. My Thai also features another Basil Spice favorite: phat kaphrao, a stir-fried entrée with fresh sweet basil, onions, carrots and bell peppers, served
with rice and the guest’s choice of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or tofu. “Basically, this menu is going to be the most popular items from all the experience I have from opening restaurants as well as some of my personal favorites,” Fox says. “Once in a while, we’ll have creative specials, too.” Dishes at My Thai also have slight differences from their Basil Spice counterparts in order to offer a unique experience. The Drunken Noodle wok entrée, for instance, features the addition of white wine to a base of spicy basil sauce. A completely new offering is the American Fried Rice wok entrée with egg, peas, carrots, onion, raisins and, atop all else, a fried egg. “We might be the only restaurant in the states that sells this,” Fox says with a laugh. “This is a really

y Thai, which launched in July in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood, offers authentic cuisine from central Thailand for lunch and dinner, and comes from the owner of South Grand mainstay Basil Spice Thai Cuisine. Chef-owner Somying Fox came to this country to study education in Oklahoma. After the Thailand native and former teacher relocated to New Orleans for work, though, she decided to open a restaurant there. “I fell in love with America and wanted to share Thai culture and Thai food with people here,” Fox says. “Everything was almost set up to open the restaurant, but then Hurricane Katrina hit. popular dish in Thailand. When I grew up, I always ate American fried rice, and when I came here, I thought I could get the authentic version. I once took a lot of my American friends to Thailand, and it was the first thing they saw on the menu. They were so curious that they all ordered it. I understood then that it never existed in America.” Drink options at My Thai include Thai coffee and Thai tea – with or without boba – and Thai beer brands like Carlsberg Elephant. For dessert, guests can choose from selections like sweet sticky rice with mango. Whether you want to simply stick to a dessert and a drink or dive right into the drunken noodles, do so before catching Love Never Dies at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. “I’m really happy to share my food with customers and get to see their smiles and happiness when they eat our food,” Fox says. “We want to cook them real Thai food and make them feel at home.”

Story: Several years after the Phantom disappeared from the Paris Opera House, he has resurfaced at Coney Island in New York City. Known only as the elusive Mr. Y, proprietor of The Phantasma amusement park, he lives above the carny and freak shows that dazzle the audiences who attend them. In his employ are Madame Giry and her daughter, Meg, who helped him escape France a decade earlier. Meg stars in the popular burlesque revue at The Phantasma, an act produced by Madame Giry, who resents the Phantom’s continued infatuation with his one-time protégée, famous opera star Christine Daaé. When word is announced that Christine has agreed to perform at Oscar Hammerstein I’s new Manhattan opera house, the Phantom sends a trio of freak show performers named Fleck, Gangle and Squelch to pick up Christine; her husband, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny; and their son, Gustave, in a horseless carriage, pretending to represent Hammerstein. The Phantom arranges to meet Christine alone, revealing that he is not dead but now living in New York. He professes his love for her and offers to double her salary if she’ll perform at The Phantasma. He also notices that 10-year-old Gustave has a precocious musical ability. Confronting Christine, he learns that Gustave is his own son, not Raoul’s, and determines to leave his estate eventually to Gustave. Raoul, now an embittered alcoholic and mired in gambling debts, agrees to the Phantom’s proposition: If Christine sings a song composed by the Phantom, Raoul will return to France alone. If she refuses to perform, the Phantom will pay off all of Raoul’s debt and leave Christine and her family alone forever. Highlights: The Fabulous Fox Theatre opens its 2018-19 season with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to his 1986 smash, The Phantom of the Opera, which picks up, somewhat, where the original musical ended. Other Info: Lloyd Webber, who composed the music for The Phantom of the Opera, was joined in that original effort by lyricists Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, who collaborated with Lloyd Webber on the book. That work was based on the 19th-century novel by Gaston Leroux. Love Never Dies to date hasn’t appeared on Broadway, and there’s a good reason for that. The book by Ben Elton, which is based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel The Phantom of Manhattan, never gained traction. It’s set in 1907, supposedly a decade after the time period for The Phantom, but the story has a forced feeling to it. There are some positive elements to Love Never Dies. All of the principals demonstrate very good singing voices, and it was especially rewarding to hear young Jake Heston Miller showcase his beautiful, high voice as Gustave on opening night (he alternates with Christian Harmston in the role). Likewise, Meghan Picerno displayed a wonderful soprano in the role of Christine.
Bronson Norris Murphy serves capably as the Phantom, even if he does look ridiculously young for the part, especially since this so-called sequel takes place a decade after the original. He shares a tender moment with Picerno when they sing a duet of the show’s signature ballad, “Once Upon Another Time.” Lloyd Webber’s intricate score covers a variety of genres, including supposedly styles of music popular at the turn of the 20th century in burlesque houses. A highlight is the raucous rock sound of “The Beauty Underneath” near the end of Act I. The ensemble cavorts throughout the intoxicating “Aerie” portion of The Phantasma, filled with imaginative touches of creatures encapsulated in elliptical forms which circle in carousel fashion around the stage. Other major players include Sean Thompson in the thankless role of Raoul, Karen Mason as the stonefaced Madame Giry and Mary Michael Patterson as the simple-minded Meg, thrilled to see Christine after so many years and then crushed with envy when she sees the Phantom’s continued adoration of her onetime sister chorus member. Katrina Kemp, Stephen Petrovich and Richard Koons provide entertainment as the freak trio of Fleck, Gangle and Squelch. While Love Never Dies looks good in its layout, dominated by an imposing half-mask of the Phantom at stage right, the story just isn’t compelling enough to pay sufficient homage to its predecessor.

2013 FLYWHEEL, PINOT NOIR, BROSSEAU VINEYARD – CHALONE, CALIFORNIA Grape: 100% Pinot Noir Owner/Winemaker: Scott Shapely Approximate Retail Price: $37 TASTING NOTES: Color: Intense ruby red, semi-bright Aroma: Bright red cherry and plum laced with soft minerality, autumn spices and a bit of cola Taste: Mineral earthiness intermingled with bright cherry and a long, delightful finish

n California’s Monterey County, situated in the Gabilan Mountains 1,800 feet above sea level, with only three vineyards planted to about 300 acres, the Chalone American Viticultural Area, or AVA, stands unique from all others in the region. Why? Well, some areas have limestone, and some have a cool climate – but very few, like Chalone, have both. These two factors together make this
region the most similar to Burgundy, France, which inevitably favors chardonnay and pinot noir. Today’s Chalone Vineyard – of Chalone Winery, the only winery in the region – was first planted in 1919 to chardonnay and chenin blanc. As the region expanded, adding Soledad, California’s Michaud and Brosseau Vineyard, so have the plantings, adding primarily pinot noir but also other cool climate-loving varietals such as syrah, grenache and viognier. The family-owned and -operated Brosseau Vineyard was purchased in 1978 by Jon and Jan Brosseau and cleared for planting by 1980. Of the 160 acres originally purchased, 16 were planted to chardonnay and only one to pinot noir. Since then, the Brosseaus have expanded their property and plantings, adding not only more acreage to vine but also more varieties of chardonnay and pinot noir clones, along with small plots dedicated to syrah, marsanne, roussanne, viognier and chenin blanc. The organically farmed and award-winning
Brosseau Vineyard has sold its fruit to a great many popular and respected wineries, including Loring Wine Company, Dain Wines, Copain Wines and Testarossa Winery. Flywheel is a much smaller boutique winery located in the heart of San Francisco. Its small-lot wines focus on the Monterey County region, primarily the Chalone AVA. Its chardonnay, pinot noir (both Brosseau Vineyard), grenache and mourvèdre showcase the terroir-driven style with minerality and bright fruit. Its pinot noir was selected for its pleasant and complex fruit structure, balanced acidity and lingering finish, reminiscent of many Burgundian wines. Food Pairings: This wine pairs wonderfully with yellowfin tuna, filet mignon with mushroom bordelaise, truffle risotto, softer cheeses like Brie or Morbier, chocolate and butternut squash.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin has once more become a resident of the metro area – just in time for the golden anniversary of his esteemed career. 70

M
aestro Leonard Slatkin’s career has come full circle: After decades of distinguished performances around the world, the six-time Grammy-winning conductor and renowned former St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) music director has returned to reside in the Gateway City for his 50th-anniversary year of conducting. “It all started here,” Slatkin says. During his lauded 17-year-run leading the SLSO from 1979 to 1996, Slatkin recalls countless highlights, from the acclaimed group’s annual appearances in New York City to tours in Europe and Asia, as well as helping shape the future of classical music through creating the now nearly 50-yearold St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. “But perhaps most important was the building of trust between the orchestra and the community,” he says. Earlier this year, when Slatkin and his wife, award-winning composer Cindy McTee, were making the decision on where to live out their music careers during their golden years, the maestro recalls: “It was love at first left turn … St. Louis seemed to have everything we needed. So we built a house in Clayton and have spent most of the summer here.” The move back to St. Louis comes on the heels of Slatkin’s most recent role as music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). After taking the DSO to new heights through reconnecting the group with its city, the maestro ended his decade-long Michigan stay in June, after he underwent a successful heart surgery in May. “As with St. Louis, there were so many [DSO] moments that were memorable, but none more than at the final concert, where I was being honored,” Slatkin says. “My son, Daniel, surprised me with a piece of music, In Fields, that he had written for the occasion. But even more astounding was that he walked onstage and conducted it!” As an LA native, Slatkin has enjoyed a lifelong love affair with music begun in early childhood – his parents’ musical work in the film industry led his family to relationships with some of the most beloved composers and performers of Hollywood’s Golden Age, such as Frank Sinatra. Ever enthralled by song, Slatkin went on to graduate from music school at New York City’s nonpareil Juilliard School and to lead a flourishing conducting career that included significant stints as music director at the SLSO, the DSO, London’s BBC Symphony Orchestra and the former New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, as well as a 12-year run helming the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., which yielded both performances for and friendships
O with political leadership, from former President Bill Clinton to former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. Among awards, Slatkin’s outstanding lifetime career in music has garnered half a dozen Grammy wins and 33 nominations, as well as the prestigious National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. government. And Slatkin has shared his conducting talents with younger generations, founding the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C., and serving as a music educator at institutions such as Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music, the Aspen Music School in Colorado and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Now back in St. Louis with an accomplished music career in tow, Slatkin will continue to conduct the world’s top orchestras about 30 weeks a year and serve in three roles: as honorary music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France, as well as music director laureate of the DSO and conductor laureate of the SLSO, including leading the SLSO in performances across two weeks this spring at Powell Hall.
On April 27 and 28, Slatkin will conduct the SLSO through Leonard Bernstein’s emotional Symphony No. 3, Kaddish (a word meaning “sanctification,” a hymn of praise in Jewish prayer services), which was written for late President John F. Kennedy. And on May 3 and 4, celebratory performances in honor of Slatkin’s 50 years of working with the SLSO will include the maestro leading Tchaikovsky’s passionate Sixth Symphony, and the world premiere of a special commissioned piece by composer Jeff Beal, the musical mastermind behind the score of the popular Netflix series House of Cards. “We will be playing a few of my favorites, as well as some new pieces,” Slatkin says, noting, “Jeff Beal is writing a song cycle for my good friend soprano Hila Plitmann.” Beyond the baton, the maestro notes that he’ll take a beat for a little rest and relaxation: “It is also time to just enjoy myself and do some traveling with my wife, Cindy.” Bravo, indeed!
