InJuly2023,RiverCityOutdoors announcedtheopeningofitsnewGearLending Library,whichoffersoutdoorequipmentthat canbecheckedoutforfree.Theteambehindthe organizationhopesthisenhancedaccessibility willremovebarriersforpeoplelivinginthe St.Louisregionandencourageresidentsto getoutsideandenjoynature.
“Inspeakingwithmembersofthecommunity, welearnedthatoneofthebiggestbarriersto gettingoutsideisalackofaccesstooutdoorgear,” RiverCityOutdoorsdirectorRebeccaWeaversays.
RCOaimstoincreaseequitableaccessto outdoorrecreationintheSt.Louisareathroughits GearLendingLibrary,whichislocatedattheBig MuddyAdventuresGuideShopintheCentralWest Endneighborhood.Fornocost,visitorscanborrow outdoorequipmentforhiking,camping,paddling, backpackingandmore.

“Therapeuticsongwritingisreallybeneficial,” saysMaryvilleUniversitydirectorofmusic therapyCrystalWeaver.“Ithelpschildren diganosedwithcancerandblooddisorders withself-expressionandself-esteem,provides appropriatedistractionandcanhelpbuildasense ofjoyandoptimism.”
For14years,KRChashelpedchildrenand theirfamilieswithcancerandsicklecelldisease bypairingthemwithboard-certified music therapiststowriteandrecordauniquesongto uplifttheirspirits Maryville’sMusicTherapy programistheonlyoneofitskindintheSt Louisareaandoneofonlyfourinthestateof Missouri.Itisfullyaccreditedbythe NationalAssociationofSchools Musicandfullyapproved theAmericanMusic TherapyAssociation.
Traditionally,KRC wasprovidedatno costtochildrenages 5to18.In2023,the programexpanded itsservicestooffer morecomprehensive musictherapyoptions forinfants,children, teensandyoungadults Now,thankstoadvances chnologyandadditional resources,kidscantakepart insessionstailoredtotheirabilities–including,forexample,recordingtheheartbeat
ofaninfantortoddlerandusingthatasthe backdropforasong.
“Wethinkoftherapeuticsongwritingasan umbrellaterm,”Weaversays.“Thesongwriting sessionsadaptbasedonthechild’sdevelopment stage.Foryoungerchildren,thesongwriting sessionswillbemoreguidedbythemusictherapist thanforteens,whomayneedmoreautonomyand forwhomthesongmightbemoreabstract.”
Anotherrecentdevelopmentpioneeredby theprogramiswhatWeavercallsfollow-through services.MembersofKRC’steam–ledbylead musictherapistAlisonCole,MBA,MT-BC–meet withchildrenthroughouttheirentiretreatmentas opposedtoasingle,one-timevisit.
“We’renotgoingtobelimitedtoseeingachild justonetimeduringtheircancertreatment,” Weaversays “Withfollow-throughservices,we’re withthemthroughouttheircancerjourney.We wantthecommunitytoknowthatKRCisn’tjust
thereforachildforoneisolatedexperience;we’re reallyfollowingthroughwiththem.”
Althoughmusictherapyisn’tacure-all remedytocancerorsicklecelldisease,itstill providesacreativeoutletandpositiveemotional supportforpatientsbattlingseriousillnesses andcancer,especiallyinahospitalenvironment. TheteamatKRCseesthismissionasavitalone forhelpingchildrenthroughtheprocesswiththe powerofmusic.

“Anyonecanhelptheircommunityoutbydonating cannedgoodstheydonotuse,oldclothesthatstill function,hostingafooddriveorvolunteeringatashelter,” the9-year-oldsays.Sheproveshowcapableasingle person–nomatterhowyoung–canbeatmakingthe worldabetterplaceforeveryone.Afterall,Williams startedhernonprofitorganization,theParisCares Foundation,infirstgradeafterbeinginspiredby“One Boy’sMagic,”abookbyCariChadwickDeal.
Hermother,AliciaMarshall,offeredencouragement whenWilliamsfirstapproachedherwiththeconcept. “Shehadaplanmappedoutinherheadandinsistedon gatheringthingstomakeadonationbytheweekend,” Marshallrecalls.“HerfatherandIassistedherwiththe itemssheneeded,andsowemadeourfirst[contribution] indowntownSt.Louis.”
Today,thankstomanydonationsandafew fundraisinginitiatives,theParisCaresFoundationhas distributed10,000mealsandcountingtoareashelters andunhousedpersons.
Williamshasdevelopedthreetypesofcarepackages forrecipients:theParisCaresBag,theParisCares BirthdayBoxandtheParisCaresBox.Eachservesa uniquepurposeandintendstobringsomejoytothose inneedwithpersonalizedmessagesorartworkaddedto everypaperbag.
