What inspired your column this week? CHARLOTTE OTTLEY Many leaders give too much for too long, with too little sustainable fulfillment. A clever play on words with the phrase “mind your own business” is a reminder to top executives that to offer the best help and leadership to others, their own affairs should be in order (p. 42).
PATRICIA RAVEN A September sunset backlit my orange Sun Sugar tomato vine, covering it with glowing golden orbs. I raced to get a bowl to capture the sunshine and carry it to the table, and the harvest column (p. 20) wrote itself.
KATIE YEADON My inspiration for this week’s One Look, Two Ways (p. 32) was a darling dress! I saw it right when I walked into J. McLaughlin and thought it was perfect. It’s great on any age, body type and for so many different occasions. Plus, I just love the color blue!

EDITOR THE VERY FIRST TIME I SAW A GLASS-BLOWING DEMONSTRATION, I was a child of about 5 or 6. Behind a pane of protective glass, an old man sat on a stool and used small tools to make whimsical animal figurines, tiny enough to fit in the palm of his hand. He took dollops of molten liquid and heated them up, then blew through a long tube, slowly increasing their size. To add a head or tail, he added a second, smaller dollop to the end and shaped it with quick, deft movements. More recently, I saw a demonstration of the art of glassblowing on a larger scale. It was at the Third Friday open house at Third Degree Glass Factory. The warehouse-like space is opened up each month for a party, where among other festivities, guests can watch the professionals at work – or, if they’re particularly daring, create their own piece of art. The demonstrations take place in a hot room, where glass blowers create their art with little more than a scalding hot kiln, a few metal tools and, of course, the molten-hot liquid glass. In this issue, we take you inside the shop and showroom with a story by Brittany Nay, beginning on page 61.

ccording to the American Psychological Association, stress in America is at a sevenyear low. Despite how hopeful that sounds, too many people get caught up in the dayto-day routines and worries of their lives. How do they unwind? For residents of The Gatesworth, a special resident program added last May has provided a new means to de-stress – meditation. For resident Sherry Wolff, the addition of a once-aweek meditation course was a positive influence in her life at The Gatesworth. She’s been meditating for more than 40 years and was thrilled that other people around her share her enthusiasm for the relaxing activity. “My husband and I started 40 years ago when a friend across the street recommended we try it,” Wolff says. “I don’t do it every day like I should, but I do it every other day once or twice a day. It relaxes me.” She says the program at The Gatesworth is “very nice,” though it’s a new method of meditation for her. “We come up with a thought, close our eyes and think

about it. Your mind goes all sorts of places and it’s very relaxing. It’s a good all-around tool to keep you relaxed and sharp when you go to do something else.” The instructor of the class, Jules Renner, says the program is hugely beneficial for older adults. “People have their own interpretation of what meditation is, and because there’s a variety of religious traditions (at The Gatesworth), I don’t bring in spirituality. It’s more about quieting the mind, bringing stillness and using your imagination,” Renner says. The three common factors found in virtually all types of mediation are breathing, intention and visualization. With each mediation, Renner starts her class by deciding what the intention will be (energizing the body, bringing peace to the body, etc.). Then, the class moves on to breathing – Renner teaches attendees to belly-breathe. Next, they move into a guided meditation with imagery. “I’m fascinated with working with this age group,” she says. “Their imagination and what they’re able to bring back in their memories is very different from

younger people. Sometimes, we get into the routine of life, where all we’re focused on is what we’re doing. We don’t take time to daydream anymore. With this age group, it’s been a long time since they’ve daydreamed.” Renner says when the group comes out of their meditation, they are very at peace. It can also be helpful with the healing process for people like Wolff, who just went through a knee surgery, Renner notes. At The Gatesworth, meditation is just a part of the community’s extensive offering of wellness programs through its Spa One fitness center. The meditation room was a part of the original design of the community more than 25 years ago and features soft lighting, a wall of windows and privacy screens designed to be conducive to meditation. The program was brought about at the request of a resident, because The Gatesworth’s motto is “the answer is yes, what is the question?” One McKnight Place, 314-993-0111, thegatesworth.com

Harvest
Harvest season bounty makes a colorful centerpiece with speckled Forelle pears, coleus
SEASON
and Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes.
By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess
Enjoy Your Bounty
We’ve pampered our gardens all summer long, and with the frequent rains and mostly milder temperatures, many of our annual plants are getting a second wind. With the cooler days, tomatoes and cucumbers are re-blooming and will offer us an autumn harvest. Make the most of your end-of-season crops by ordering row covers now to protect them from those first light October freezes. With luck, you may still be enjoying fresh tomatoes at Thanksgiving. It is also time to sow a fall crop of lettuce, kale or radishes. Buy fresh basil and chive starts now to pot for your sunny winter window sill.
Plan Now for Holiday Decorating This is the perfect time to start collecting material for your holiday dried arrangements. As you deadhead and prune, keep an eye to harvesting for winter floral use. Dried hydrangeas are one of the best choices for volume in holiday urns and mantles. They may be left on the plant to weather to a natural tan or dried in silica while fresh to maintain color. Rumex, a broadleaved dock, punctuating my meadow landscape with deep russet red-brown seed spikes about 2 feet tall, is ready for harvest now. The stems may be cut as long as possible and bundled together with string, floral wire or rubber bands and hung upside-down to dry. For ornamental grasses, wait
JM
until the seed heads are fully formed before cutting to dry. Experiment by collecting any interesting seed heads you might find. Milkweed, okra, castor bean, vitex and magnolia all offer great textural additions. Even the perennial border offers stems to dry instead of composting. Try astilbe or penstemon seed heads for soft vertical elements. Dried elements may be enhanced with floral spray paint and glitter or enjoyed in their original soft, natural hues. The dead branches and pine cones produced by autumn thunderstorms are great to save for structure and form in dried arrangements. They may be used natural at Thanksgiving or painted a glittering gold or dashing red for the holidays. Wire pine cones now so they may be hung out of the way, ready to use in the busy season. Time spent now prepping, wiring and painting your harvest will be rewarded with ready-toassemble elements for the busy holiday crush. Resist the temptation to prune magnolias, hollies, or red- and yellow-twig dogwood this early. Trimming now will only spur tender, frost-sensitive sprouts. These woodies are best cut fresh in late November, after berries color up and dogwood leaves drop. Curly willow and Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick should be cut after the leaves are shed as well. With a little time spent harvesting now, your winter centerpieces will reflect the unique beauty of your own garden.
Keep cucumbers and tomatoes producing until November by ordering row covers now

eaves aren’t the only things transforming this time of year. For the fifth year, Ladue News is gearing up to open its annual Show house. Inside, interior designers from across St. Louis are transforming 12 rooms – each originally a blank canvas – to reflect their own visions for the spaces. Let me take this opportunity to introduce the home, as well as the challenges and opportunities it presents to the designers. I also offer some advice on how to get the most from your experience when you visit. The home, located at 1751 N. woodlawn Ave., is described as a williamsburg Southern Colonial. It sits on 20 acres, including tennis courts and a pool (which is shaped like the Chevrolet logo, but more

on that later). The house was originally designed by the late Chloe Crone woods-ward for her cousins in 1967. The 8,000-square-foot home remained in the family until 1981, when Johnny Londoff, the celebrated Chevrolet dealer and philanthropist, purchased it (hence the pool’s unique shape). Interior designers tasked with tackling rooms in this year’s Show house faced a common challenge: how do you best transform rooms that haven’t been updated in years to make them current and relevant in a very short timeframe? The home is very traditional, and as such, it’s also a challenge to integrate more contemporary designs. The home is full of custom millwork, and as woodwork is a huge element of any room, it presents the question: to
paint, or not to paint? This is a critical choice for the designers. Lighting is also critical. Designers will need to address the lighting limitations, as well as opportunities, to improve each room. The house has wonderful natural light and that’s a huge plus, but designers will have to balance it, depending on if they’re working on a “day room” or “night room,” and plan lighting accordingly. Some rooms definitely read better at certain times of day. As you walk through the Show house, pay close attention to the creative way each room is lit. Texture plays an important role in the Show house. Layering a space is of utmost importance. In the home, relationships between various surfaces –

fabrics, walls, floors and surfaces – and how each element plays off of the next should be noted. each surface is important, which means ceilings and how they are treated are just as important as walls and floors. Guests who visit the Show house should keep in mind that it is not intended to have flow; but rather, each room should be viewed and appreciated individually, just as if you were viewing different works of art in a museum. As you walk from room to room, find at least one element that speaks to you. As my dear Aunt Liz said when touring a previous Show house with me, “I may not have liked every room, but I found something in every room I liked.” I’m confident you’ll be able to say the same after seeing this year’s gorgeously reimagined Show house. Editor’s note: Check back over the next three weeks. We will be giving you a look behind the scenes as the designers create their unique spaces for the Show House.

BEST FACE FORWARD
The Colors of Fall
T
his is the time of year when we St. Louisans start transitioning our clothing to fall-appropriate wear out, have you thought about how you should alter your makeup and skin care regimen to fit the season? Here are my tips to keep skin in tip-top shape and colors to coordinate with your fall wardrobe.
Prepare Your Skin You may not have had to turn on the heat yet, but as soon as you do, your skin will show it. So make sure to start using a richer moisturizer a few weeks before the weather gets cooler to intercept dryness for face and body. If that seems like too much, just try it one or two days a week. If you do not have a richer cream, you can add in an oil-serum to boost your regular moisturizer. Dior’s Nurturing Oil-Serum
is wonderful. It’s plant and nut based, so it does not clog pores and leaves skin soft, supple and luminous I love mixing a drop into face and a couple drops into body cream. (Dior Nurturing Oil-Serum, $165, available at Dillard’s and Neiman Marcus). Don’t forget to continue this at night. Our bodies lose the most moisture while sleeping, when our cells are detoxing and repairing at a very high rate. It is very important to counteract this with a good routine. So, how do you know if your skin needs more moisture? It will look dull, pores can appear larger, you may see flaky skin, it will feel rough to the touch and your skin tone may have a white-ish hue. Supple, moisturized skin should feel smooth, almost wet to the touch, as if you pressed gently on it you could feel your moisturizer coming out of the skin.
Freshen Up Your Colors Your skin will start to become more pale as you spend less time outdoors, you may need to switch to a
By Amy Koehler lighter foundation shade. If you are in between shades, you can mix your summer and winter foundation colors together to get that perfect match. Bronzers should be lighter as well, especially if your face gets tan in the summer. The dark bronzer that you used on your tan summer skin will look too harsh and age you as your skin returns to its winter hue. Just as fall clothing takes on deep hues, blush and eye shadow colors should start looking deeper in tone. Cream or liquid blush and eyeshadows are nice to combat the dryness that comes with the season. I love the new DiorBlush Cheek Stick in Rosewood ($34, Neiman Marcus, Dillard’s), and for eyes, I love the Dolce and Gabbana Perfect Mono Cream Eye Colors. Sage, Leo Brown and Zambia Beige ($37, Nordstrom, dolceandgabbana.com) are perfect shades to transition your beauty look from summer to fall. With these quick tips, you’ll put your best face forward this fall.

BETTER KNOW A BUSINESS
23 City Blocks
T
By Connie Mitchell
he creation of 23 City Blocks Catering was a stroke of genius “born from a crazy idea,” says Amanda Bradham-Little, director of marketing and events. “Why not put an event space on the top of a chocolate factory in downtown Saint Louis?” she asks. “Well, that idea struck it rich, eventually getting even sweeter with the addition of a sister property.” Bradham-Little is referring to the company that now owns and manages both The Caramel Room at Bissinger’s and Lumen Private Event Space – 23 city blocks apart in the middle of St. Louis. Founder: Tim Fogerty, president and CEO of Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier, developed the concept for 23 City Blocks in 2013, shortly after taking the reins at Bissinger’s. A 1987 Washington University graduate, Fogerty was a board member at Bissinger’s and became chairman of the board in mid-2012. Prior to that, he served as CEO of Gateway EDI, a health-care information technology company. Company history: Working with a local design firm, The Caramel Room at Bissinger’s took shape in 2014. “With closed-toe shoes and hard hats on, the team was there every day showing the vision to potential clients, some of whom were trusting enough to share in their hopes for the space,” Bradham-Little says. That July, Lumen Private Event Space was added to the mix with updates to the original space. Current management: In addition to Fogerty and Bradham-Little, who were on board from the earliest discussions about developing 23 City Blocks, Nick Jovanovic serves as general manager, and Nick Miller, former owner of Harvest Restaurant, is executive chef. Services: “23 City Blocks Catering provides flawless execution for all styles and
types of events,” Bradham-Little says. “From corporate meetings and luncheons to weddings for 300, no event is left without a signature touch.” She describes Lumen Private Event Space as contemporary and modern, while The Caramel Room at Bissinger’s “is a bit grander in size with an elegant, yet industrial feel. Both spaces boast the same spot-on service staff with custom culinary experiences being a major emphasis.” Secret of their success: Bradham-Little credits 23 City Blocks’ success to the fact that “we are a Saint Louis family.” The company supports other local businesses and treats each individual event and experience with personalized service and a passion for detail.

The eighth wonder of the world is how Roger Goodell still has a job. He is 0 for 100 in court and he is destroying Patriots tapes in Nixonian fashion before Congress can do a real investigation of Spygate. One year, Goodell made more than $40 million.

Congrats to St. Louisian Jo Jo White, who is finally going into the basketball Hall of Fame. After being selected to seven All-Star games and winning two World Championships, it’s well overdue. It’s a shame that White will not be able to deliver the speech live because of health issues.

“Best of Enemies” is a must-see movie. The debates between William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal make what you see on our airwaves today seem extremely tame. And this was in 1968. Gotta see it.

I don’t understand people who vote against a high school trying like MICDS to get lights for their football field. They play eight home games a year – maybe a little more with soccer. The games are over by 9:45 p.m. Is there anything wrong with hearing a band, some cheers and the sound of football? Stay up late once – until 10:15 p.m. – so kids can play football. Please.

can get...um...potent. Last week, we had a slight miscommunication. What was said was, “Mom, get my football bag.” What was heard was, “Mom, I got my football bag.” Chalk it up to denial or wishful thinking; whatever the reason, the football bag sat in the back of a hot car for three days. Three long, hot, blistering days. And inside, the contents sat, stewing. I saw something was amiss before I opened the tailgate. There appeared to be a soft green glow emanating from the bag, like a special effect in a bad horror movie indicating radioactivity or alien life. And just like the idiot first victim in aforementioned movie,

I opened the tailgate and unzipped the bag…it was as if the smell had taken on a life of its own. Wait. Did I say smell? That’s not the right word. Stench? Reek? Pong? I was physically knocked back. It would have taken an exorcism to get the smell out of that bag. I motioned for our dog to retreat. She’s part beagle, for chrissake — a scent that strong could kill her. Like an action hero running with a ticking bomb, I grabbed the bag and ran to the laundry room without a single breath. There I dumped the contents — pads, cleats and all — into the washer, poured half a jug of soap in and started it up, silently apologizing to any animal life that may have nested there. After that came a “Silkwood” scrub-down for me and a serious airing out for the car. That’s it. No big parenting lesson, well, except perhaps to check your car before you get out, because apparently worrying about your kids isn’t the only thing about parenting that stinks.

S
tartups are synonymous with silicon valley, but in only short three years, 65 startup companies have established themselves in st. Louis rather than on the coasts, thanks to funding and support from Arch Grants. A young company itself, Arch Grants was formed in 2011 and began awarding funds to startups that compete for $50,000 grants and an array of local networking opportunities and support services. unlike many venture capital firms, Arch Grants doesn’t take a share in company ownership, referring to its funds as non-dilutive capital. “Through our rigorously competitive Global startup competition, Arch Grants retains and attracts the most innovative entrepreneurs to the st. Louis region,” says Kate howell, director of venture philanthropy and external relations for Arch Grants. “This program is an aggressive effort to inspire the next generation of employers, civic leaders and philanthropists in st. Louis.” The company receives funding for its competitive grant awards from individual donors, grantors and corporate partners, including Missouri technology corp., st. Louis economic development partnership and partnership for downtown st. Louis. it aims to award at least 20 grants each year between two competitions: one in the fall and one in the spring. “Arch Grants provides non-dilutive capital to earlystage entrepreneurs in reciprocation for calling st. Louis home for at least one year,” howell says. “These grants are unique because we do not take a stake in the business, but rather we ask that entrepreneurs take a stake in st. Louis.” in addition to the funding, entrepreneurs who win a grant have access to free assistance with accounting,
legal services, marketing, information technology, human resources and other business services. “we partner with a large group of generous firms in the area that put up time, resources and money to support our entrepreneurs,” howell says. ben burke, director of entrepreneurship, manages the competition and support services. “we’ve seen more entrepreneurs creating new products and services, and we’ve seen a community that is hungry for this type of innovation and job creation through early-stage ventures,” he says. “i think that we will continue to see growth into the foreseeable future.” The entrepreneurs who win grants make up a diverse group and cover a wide range of products and services. More than 30 percent are women-owned businesses, and more than 40 percent are led by minorities. of the 65 startups funded, 60 are still operating, and 54 are currently active in st. Louis. in 2014 alone, competition winners included firms that produce security software, shipping automation services, inflation vests for water sports enthusiasts and a dog-tracking app. while Arch Grant startups are working hard to establish themselves, Ginger imster, executive director of Arch Grants, is working hard to take the organization itself from startup to scale-up. she says her greatest challenge has been “managing an organization that must raise 100 percent of its operating budget, including the grants awarded, every year.” she credits Arch Grants’ board of directors, volunteers, competition committee and advisory council with making the program successful. For example, more than 240 community judges help evaluate companies that compete for grants and winnow the group to 30 finalists per competition.
By Connie Mitchell
“our staff is equally as committed, and it’s a true privilege to work with our small but mighty team,” imster says. both burke and imster love working with the entrepreneurs who are funded by Arch Grants. “They are a passionate group of people who make it easy to love your job,” burke says, and imster echoes, “They are an incredibly talented group of extremely thoughtful people.” imster says it’s not important to understand exactly what each grant recipient does, but to see how these entrepreneurs are together enriching the st. Louis area. “what is essential is that everyone understand that Arch Grants is a catalyst to change the national narrative about st. Louis,” she says. “our capacity to change st. Louis’ future hinges on our ability to recruit and retain talent to st. Louis. Arch Grants is proving to be a very compelling invitation for talent to consider starting new businesses in st. Louis. we then want them to start families, create jobs, volunteer, etc.” Arch Grants’ annual gala is set for Thu., nov. 12. At the gala, the 2015 Arch Grants entrepreneur Award will be presented to rodger riney, founder and chief executive officer of scottrade Financial services inc. “we need more st. Louisans to see Arch Grants as a civic project that is worthy of community investment,” imster says. “we’re recapturing the spirit of st. Louis by igniting ingenuity and innovation in st. Louis.”
Tickets and sponsorships are available for the Arch Grants gala, and interested parties may contact Kate Howell at kate.howell@archgrants.org or 314-272-4857. For more information, visit archgrants.org. LadueNews.com | october 2, 2015

Dinner ...
Juniper
I
f you’re heading to the Central West End to catch the latest show at The Gaslight Theater, you certainly have your pick of fine restaurants in the vicinity to dine at pre- or post-show. But if you feel like one-stop shopping, drop in just a couple doors down to Juniper, where the food and drink is topnotch and as a bonus, you only have to park once. Juniper recently underwent another menu change for the season, so if you haven’t been there in a while, you’re in for some new taste sensations. The menu is broken down into the following categories: Snackies (apps and small plates), From The Field (salads), Main Attractions (entrée-sized dishes) and Sides. The Breadbasket, which boasts a selection of mix-and-match breads, gets a section all to itself. The

By Matt Sorrell menu also features one of my favorite options, a buildyour-own tasting menu, which allows diners to select three courses for $30 or five for $45. It’s a great way to taste around the menu via smaller portions instead of committing to one dish. We decided on the $30 option, starting with the kale salad, followed by the chicken and waffles and finishing up with the maque choux. Kale may have fallen out of favor with some folks, but when it’s included in a salad like this, it’ll never go out of style. The crisp kale is topped with cornbread crumbs and a subtle apple butter dressing, judiciously applied. Chicken and waffles are having a moment, and you won’t find a better example than the one at Juniper. Along with tender chicken cooked just so with exactly
the right amount of uniformly crispy batter, the key to this version of the Southern classic is the push and pull of salt and sweet. The maque choux, a traditional vegetable dish native to southern Louisiana, is built around tender gnocchi, with some tasty veggies that include sweet corn and okra, all in a rich buttermilk sauce. Market fish can be added for an additional $5. This should have been plenty of food, but I spied fried bologna with toast ($9) on the list, and I couldn’t resist, especially when I saw it comes with pimento cheese, a down-home delicacy that Juniper always does right. While the food at Juniper is certainly the main attraction, there’s also a solid bar program here,

with a selection of creative cocktails as well as a beer list heavy on local brews and wines by the glass. Cocktail-wise, a couple of standouts to keep in mind are the Keep The Change ($9) and the Hollywood & Vine ($9). Keep The Change is a refreshing combo of gin, lemon juice, peach shrub, local favorite The Big O ginger liqueur, St. Germaine and club soda. Hollywood & Vine is on the other side of the flavor spectrum. Based on rye whiskey, it also includes allspice, honey, grapefruit juice, dry orange curacao and every mixologist’s favorite, egg white. It’s a lovely fall sipper. 360 North Boyle Ave., Central West End, 314-329-7696, junipereats.com.

Story: Four aspiring novelists pay $5,000 apiece for a six-week seminar with Leonard, an international literary figure. They meet weekly in Kate’s lavish Manhattan apartment, where they await the fate of their attempts at fictional stardom as their abrasive, abusive sage skewers their prose, or maybe even praises their efforts. Along the way, their very real emotions come to the fore as they form alliances, offer each other encouragement and enter into dalliances that go beyond the loose classroom structure. It’s a seminar about writing, relationships, emotional survival and, of course, winning. Highlights: St. Louis Actors’ Studio starts its ninth season, themed Mind Games, with this finely wrought production of playwright Theresa Rebeck’s melodramatic, dark comedy about the relentless pursuit of fame and glory among the literati and wannabe writers. Some excellent performances help gloss over mawkish script elements to make this a palatable presentation. Other Info: Production notes term “Seminar” a “provocative comedy,” which certainly is one way to look at this two-act dissection of human emotions and aspirations. First produced in 2011 on Broadway, it starred Alan Rickman in the pivotal role of Leonard, the verbally and psychologically abusive academic who berates his handful of students and is paid handsomely by them for the privilege. Jeff Goldblum replaced Rickman for the final month of the six-month run. It seems like Donald Trump has invaded the world of words in this ongoing diatribe, which is unpleasant to watch because of Leonard’s socially stunted emotional growth; but fascinating, nonetheless, to observe how John Pierson masterfully inhabits such a relentlessly nasty and boorish character. Guided by Elizabeth Helman’s carefully calibrated direction, Pierson and his colleagues artfully dance amid the insults, castigations and primeval punitive behavior that lie on the floor of Patrick Huber’s thoughtfully aligned set like so many shards extracting blood on vulnerable bodies. Rebeck’s premise begins with gusto, as four aspiring writers put their hopes and dreams into a course they believe may verify their individual gifts. Kate (Taylor Pietz) comes from an affluent family and includes a degree from a tony New England college on her resume. Martin (Jason Contini) knows Kate from high school, but has a decidedly middle-class background that required him to forego paying rent on his apartment in order to scrape together dollars for this seminar. Douglas (Nathan Bush), looking fastidious in his tidy coat and tie, is the son of a well-known writer and professor of some repute with knowledge of Leonard’s sketchy past, while Izzy (Alicia Smith) is a

carefree spirit who seems the best able to gird herself from Leonard’s caustic insults. There’s considerable comedy in Rebeck’s script, but eventually the work becomes bogged down in melodrama and soap opera. At the core of the problem is the unrepentant nature of Leonard, who goes off to Somalia at one point and then returns talking about what he has seen – not with compassion, but from what it offers in literary potential – a Hemingway-style approach to modernworld problems. Still, there is wonderful work by Helman’s tightly knit ensemble. Pierson carefully reveals holes in Leonard’s brash armor to the point where he isn’t pitied, but is understood. Contini’s Martin provides a judicious contrast as a young writer who lives and breathes concepts such as ethics and morality, even as he fails to understand the unrequited love of the unhappy Kate. Pietz beautifully conveys Kate’s complex persona, a woman who cleverly upstages the misogynistic Leonard with a story that excites the tutor with its raw, sexual appetite to prove her point about his limitations. She also poignantly handles the work’s best scene, the heart-rending finale to Act I that reveals the vulnerability of Kate’s braggadocio. Bush effectively portrays the timidity and controlled emotions of the quiet Douglas, who extracts his own revenge on Leonard after the latter flays the young man’s attempts at creativity. As Izzy, Smith smoothly reveals the games that the selfassured young woman uses to her advantage in this witty war zone where only the strong survive. Rebeck clearly is a talented playwright, even with a script as problematic as “Seminar.” In the hands of the gifted artists in this St. Louis Actors’ Studio presentation, the heartache and passion of her characters resonate richly beyond their limitations. Review: “EVEREST”
&
Because It’s There
go to our website...
I think it’s safe to assume there is no “spoiler alert” needed here. If you didn’t read Jon Krakauer’s gut-wrenching memoir recounting the ill-fated 1996 Everest expedition, “Into Thin Air,” I’m sure the guy in the seat next to you on the plane talked your ear off about it – it was quite the page-turner. So we all have a pretty good idea going in how this one turns out. Like “United 93” and “Lone Survivor,” the audience knows this movie doesn’t end well. Our story begins with some quick, brutal facts about Everest, namely that onequarter of climbers who attempt it die on the mountain. The film then follows two climbing teams, one led by Rob Hall (Jason Clark) the other by Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) as they go from rivalry to desperation when a devastating blizzard hits. The film is not based on the book and no mention of “Into Thin Air” is made in the film’s promotion – Krakauer himself has had some choice words for this account, referring to it in one interview as “total bull.” Regardless, the real star of the film is the CGI. The special effects are dizzying and truthfully, director Baltasar Kormakur seems to have dedicated most of his effort to giving the audience the feeling of being right there with the climbers. Which is great, as long as I’m in a cozy seat in a warm theater. It’s a 7.

oming soon to theaters C is this indie documentary comedy about Ravi Patel, a 29-year-old IndianAmerican who is unlucky (and uncertain) in love. On the heels of a breakup with a white girlfriend his parents knew nothing about, Ravi decides it is time to take his love life seriously and find a wife. Filmed by his sister, Geeta, Ravi travels with his family to India, where he is determined to find the secret to all the happy marriages in his family’s village. In the 50 square miles that encompass his family’s hometown, almost everyone is named Patel and a surprising number are happily married. Ravi is determined to uncover the secret of lasting love, and dedicates himself to the Patel matchmaking system. With a new-found enthusiasm, Ravi is convinced he can find an IndianAmerican Patel to be his perfect match. Told with intelligence and wit, the film explores the perennial questions: How do we find love, and once we do, how do we keep it?

parks fly as Dan Alexander twirls a rod with caramel-colored glass on its end, the molten material elongating into the shape of an amphora vase before onlookers’ eyes. The glassblowing demonstration led by the new Hotshop director is just one of the many ways guests can experience the captivating art of glassmaking at Third Degree Glass Factory. “Our motive is to amaze,” Alexander says. “We’re educating and entertaining the public with the history and creation of glass art – whether they are creating it, buying it or experiencing an event here.” Celebrating its 13th anniversary this month, Third Degree, with its exposed brick walls, polished cement floors and multi-colored glass art hanging from the ceiling, continues to heat up, offering three distinct experiences – classes, events and exhibits – and three unique studios – featuring glassblowing, flameworking and kilnworking. The public access artisan glass education and entertainment center was co-founded by St. Louis natives Doug Auer and Jim McKelvey. Auer, a former adjunct instructor who taught glassblowing classes at Washington University, and McKelvey, co-founder of Square, a credit card processor for mobile devices, met when McKelvey gave a glassblowing demonstration during one of Auer’s classes. Despite already having successful careers, the duo had a burning desire to make glasswork their full-time jobs.
for people to have an amazing experience.” This fall, visitors can make gleaming glass pumpkins. Other specialty classes include creating glass beads, tiles and paperweights. Companies also are invited to take a team-building class, where, for example, each employee can make a glass tile to be joined into a larger collaborative glass quilt. And this holiday season, attendees can create a glass ornament. Third Degree also will continue its annual tradition of offering its artists’ signature series of ornaments. A limited selection of one-of-a-kind ornaments will be selected by a jury, and for the first time, be available for preorder prior to the holidays. Alexander, who joined Third Degree in August, shares the history of glassmaking with attendees as he teaches them the art of glassblowing. The Cleveland native, who has his bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a concentration in glass arts from Kent State University, has studied under some of the world’s most respected glass artists, including Davide Salvadore in Murano, Italy, a notable locale in the history of glassmaking. Before coming to Third Degree, Alexander trained at ss museum, the Corning Museum the world’s largest glass of Glass, in Corning,, New N York. house from 6 to 10 p.m. Fiery festivities will also highlight Third Degree’s Lucky 13 anniversary-themed Third Friday on Oct. 16. For more events at Third Degree, the East Gallery serves as an event space that can accommodate about 200 guests for celebrations, including wedding ceremonies and receptions. Rental space fees support the for-profit arts organization, which hosted more than 135 events last year – and aims to top that number in 2015. Looking toward the future, Auer says the next step for Third Degree is to relocate Delmar Lee’s, a Chinese restaurant, from its current location at the front of the warehouse to Third Degree’s space across the street. The freed up 1,500-square-foot space will be used to expand the East Gallery, increasing its accommodation level to 300 guests for special events. Thirteen years after its inception, it’s safe to say that Third Degree Glass Factory remains red-hot – and is only getting hotter. 314-367-4527, stlglass.com
Third Degree Glass Factory is sparrking interest in its red-hot art made throughh gglassblowing, flameworking and kilnworking. Their dream became a reality when McKelvey handed Auer the keys to a warehouse at 5200 Delmar Blvd. and a checkbook to fund its transformation into a glass factory. Auer, who has an industrial design degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, along with three of his Washington University students, completed the renovation, including building the kilns and furnaces needed to spark the venture. The plan was to teach classes in order to fund the glass projects Auer and McKelvey wanted to create. The idea quickly caught fire, and Third Degree now draws 30,000 visitors annually. Auer handles Third Degree’s day-to-day operations, and McKelvey periodically works on glass projects, including the spectacularly colorful and intriguing glass faucets that grace the countertops of Third Degree’s restrooms. Today, about 25 local artists teach classes and create their own glass artwork – from vases to vessels and jewelry to sculptures – to display and sell in Third Degree’s gallery. Third Degree serves as a platform for the artists, as they rent studio space to create glass pieces in hopes of igniting professional careers in the art. Seventy-five percent of the sales go to the artists, Auer notes. Beginners to pros are welcomed into Third Degree to play with fire and transform glowing glass into works of art – from thematic experiential classes to multiweek sessions and private, one-on-one instruction. No experience is necessary, as teachers provide the proper instructions and tools, Auer says. “We don’t think everyone is going to become a glass master. Our goal is

KIDS AND CLAYS DINNER AUCTION
T
Photos and story by Bryan Schraier
his year’s Ronald McDonald House Kids and Clays Dinner Auction was held downtown at the Missouri Athletic Club. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while bidding on silent and live auction items. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home-away-fromhome for families of seriously ill children traveling to St. Louis for medical treatment, as well as the Ronald McDonald CareMobile, a locally-based mobile vision clinic offering free eye care for underserved children. Event co-chairs were Brad Seabaugh and Phil Brown.

x Outreach recently hosted its Cocktails on the Track & Ultimate Fan Experience fundraiser at Busch Stadium. The event included batting in the home batting cages, pitching in the bullpen, open bars in the home and visitor dugouts and a silent auction to support the nonprofit’s mission of helping people in need access medicine. Co-chairs for the event were Express Scripts senior vice president and chief medical officer Dr. Steven Miller and Westminster College president Benjamin Akande. CHARITIES & NONPROFITS: Feature Story
k c a B g n i Giv The Service Bureau
for 85 Years and Counting By Robyn Dexter
T
he Service Bureau is celebrating a notable milestone this year. “We’re 85 years young,” says Tammy Walsh, the current president of The Service Bureau. “We’re truly a one-of-a-kind organization in St. Louis.” The Service Bureau began as two separate entities of the Junior League of St. Louis in the late 1920s, organizing dance classes for children and providing invitation services. The leaders of these two functions decided to explore the possibility of joining the two enterprises and in 1930, The St. Louis Service Bureau was created as an independent business. As support and enthusiasm for the effort grew in the 1930s, the Bureau was able to begin the long tradition of donating profits through grants to the community. Today, The Service Bureau is built on three branches: dance, shop and foundation, distributing profits to area charitable organizations. The foundation was formed in 1970, and since then has made yearly charitable contributions. Last year alone, more than $85,000 was distributed to 45 agencies. “I love that we are giving back to the St. Louis community,” Walsh says. “The longevity of The Service Bureau, the way it has grown and the amount of money we’ve been able to donate over the years is just wonderful.”
The Service Bureau continues to sponsor dances for children in sixth through 12th grades. This fall, there are 775 students enrolled in the program. There are 65 active members of the Bureau’s board, who chaperone the dances and volunteer in support of the organization. Though the shop has changed locations through the years, it is now nestled in Ladue at 9773 Clayton Road and boasts a staff with expertise in proper etiquette for stationery and invitations. “Whether it is a wedding, birth announcement or a party, our staff members know how to select the right invitations,” Walsh adds. “People like to shop with us because the profits go to charity.” The Service Bureau membership continues to grow each year and provide new energy and ideas. “We have an advisory board of longstanding members who continue to be involved and are an excellent resource,” Walsh says. “The Service Bureau’s great traditions are thriving, while the shop provides invitations and gifts for all occasions.” The Service Bureau is celebrating its 85-year milestone with a week-long celebration Oct. 2 to 9 at the shop on Clayton Road. There will be a variety of trunk shows, special savings and promotions to

The Service Bureau is hosting a party for members of various charities who have benefitted from its generous contributions throughout the years. “We are pleased to bring everyone together for this celebration,” Walsh says. 9773 Clayton Road, 314-991-1104, stlservicebureau.com
