EDITOR PLANNING A WEDDING ENCOMPASSES ANSWERING MANY questions. So much so that simply escaping much of the process entirely with a destination wedding can be tempting. However, Cecily Hoffius and Judith Bellos are hoping brides- and grooms-to-be will fall in love with their new venue: The Venue at Maison du Lac. Described by the founders as having “another country” feel, the atmosphere at The Venue provides the perfect getaway without the lengthy travel. Hoffius and Bellos are hoping The Venue will steal the hearts of those wishing to wed – just as the founders themselves fell in love with the property. Starting on p. 46, Ladue News digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter shares how this visionary venue came to life among the trees. Although we don’t want to over-elm the readers too much with trees, LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach shares one of the area’s newest showcases at St. Charles’ Foundry Art Center: “Out on a Limb.” Starting on p. 68, we hope you love learning more about the loveliness of limbs and what inspired this down-to-earth exhibit. Last, but certainly not least, this week’s edition also shares some exciting news – the Ladue News spaces and what inspired them. Please join us for the Design Awards ceremony on Oct. 25 at Palladium Saint Louis, where this year’s winners will be announced! All the best,
Alecia Humphreys

n 2016, Mike and Leslie Macari visited their doctor’s office for what was supposed to be a routine sonogram. The imaging test, however, revealed abnormalities that left the couple with a host of unanswered questions and uncertainties. Not only was their baby girl underweight, but her skull was also irregularly shaped, and she showed signs of heart troubles. Doctors performed an amniocentesis to rule out chromosomal abnormalities, but the procedure revealed nothing. Additional testing was also inconclusive, offering few answers to the Macaris about their daughter’s condition. Born on June 23, 2016, Gabrielle Macari weighed only 3 pounds, 12 ounces and was quickly transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where pediatric specialists could help her grow stronger as they worked toward a diagnosis. But Gabby’s unique constellation of symptoms proved difficult to identify. That is, until the hospital’s expert genetics team arrived at a clinical diagnosis of neonatal progeroid syndrome, also known as WiedemannRautenstrauch syndrome. With unusually aged appearances at birth and severely-restricted growth, most infants suffering from this incredibly rare genetic disease do not live past seven months. Through St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the Macaris nevertheless found a glimmer of hope: a clinical genetics study supported by the Children’s Discovery Institute (CDI), an innovative research partnership between the hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Launched in 2014, the Genomics of Birth Defects project is spearheaded by a team of pediatric and newborn medicine specialists that includes coprincipal investigators F. Sessions Cole, M.D. and Jennifer Wambach, M.D., as well as Dustin Baldridge, M.D., Ph.D. and laboratory manager Dan Wegner.
Since its inception, the project has enrolled more than 100 children and their families, including the Macaris, and has given diagnoses to around 25 percent of its participants. For the Macaris, joining the study meant analyzing the family’s genome and uncovering that Gabby possesses variants in the POLR3A gene that are similar to variants seen in other children with the same syndrome. One of these children was 16 years old at the time – an optimistic sign for Gabby’s prognosis. In the meantime, Gabby recently celebrated her second birthday and will be celebrated at St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s fifth annual Play Date fundraiser on Nov. 17. “Research and fun are in synchronicity at Play Date, which supports cutting-edge research at the CDI that transforms the lives of children like Gabby,” emphasizes the hospital’s chief development officer Malcolm Berry. “Without the support of donors like those attending Play Date, specialized genetic research that leads to treatments and cures at St. Louis Children’s Hospital would not be possible,” adds Dr. F. Sessions Cole, chief medical officer. Attendees to this lively “anti-gala” will be treated to an exuberant evening of dinner, drinks and plenty of activities. For event chair Alison Sheehan, the event’s fifth birthday is a particularly special occasion: “We’re recapturing the excitement of your favorite childhood birthday party, in the spirit of finding cures and ensuring that more kids get to experience birthdays of their own.” St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation, 1001 Highlands Plaza Drive West, Suite 160, St. Louis, 314-286-0988, stlouischildrens.org

Emcee Jasmine Huda of KTVI Fox 2 welcomed guests to the event, which included cocktails, a fall fashiontrend presentation and a presentation from a youth burn survivor impacted by the camp. The event also included a VIP shopping experience exclusively for such guests, during which Neiman Marcus remained open an additional hour. Co-chairing this year’s event were Faith Berger, Rachel Weiss Kalina, Sheri Sherman and Amanda Winters. The event raises funds for youth burn survivors ages six to 17 to attend Midwest Children’s Burn Camp, a residential summer camp program held at Camp Sabra at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.

Design DESTINATION ST. JOHN, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS By Robyn Dexter Just a few hours south of Florida lies a set of three islands that are a territory of the United States: the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. purchased the islands during World War I from the Danish government, and they have become popular tourist destinations in the decades since. The smallest of the three is St. John, a 20-squaremile slice of heaven that is 60 percent national park. Unlike its touristy neighbor of St. Thomas, St. John is a pristine getaway for those seeking true escape. Though the islands and much of the rest of the Caribbean were ravaged by Hurricane Irma last year, St. John and its neighbors have rebuilt and restored, and both cruise ships and airlines have returned to them. Visitors to St. John can enjoy local history at its

home should be as unique as its inhabitants. However, it takes a skilled and talented interior designer to channel that uniqueness and turn it into a luxurious and flawless reflection of its proud owners. Luckily, the metro area is home to some of the most talented designers around, which is exactly why we’re proud to celebrate their work with the Ladue News Design Awards. Throughout September, the area’s thriving design community was encouraged to submit its individual members’ best projects from the past year in six categories: bathroom, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, living space and outdoor space. A panel of independent judges, all members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), reviewed the outpouring of impressive applications to narrow each category to three finalists. This year’s winners will be announced at the 2018 Ladue News Design Awards on Oct. 25 at Palladium Saint Louis and will also be featured in the Oct. 26 edition of Ladue News. Without further ado, it’s our pleasure to congratulate and introduce the finalists!

Good things come in small packages – or in this case, gorgeous things. Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath designer Chris Paul made every inch of this 109-square-foot bathroom count. From the marble hexagonal floor tiles to the sparking crystal knobs adorning the hand-brushed white cabinets to an antique brass chandelier from Paris hanging delicately above the bath, flawless features abound throughout – and the judges took note. “Simple elegance and color palette lend to a small space looking much larger,” remarks one judge. The statement piece in the space is a beautifully shaped metal-framed beveled mirror mounted on another mirror, also flanked by unlacquered brass torchiere-style sconces.
When her Wildwood clients requested a quiet retreat, designer Nancy Barrett of Beautiful Rooms Design used neutral tones and natural views to her favor. “When working with a neutral color scheme, it is important to provide an abundance of texture to make it interesting,” Barrett says. “The paint color on the walls created a cozy feeling, but the room was brightened by light neutral bedding, [an] upholstered headboard and bench.” However, the clean lines and textures throughout – from the patterned carpet to the tastefully textured mirror hanging opposite the beautiful bay window – are what the judges felt made the space “super inviting.”

“This room defines both fashion and function,” states a judge regarding this master bedroom designed by Laurie LeBoeuf of Castle Design. “The architectural elements here are a true focal point.” LeBoeuf’s goal for the space was to celebrate simple elegance, bold patterns, classic shapes and architectural embellishments, which she expertly executed in the room. “Adding a fresh sense of glamour, crystal chandeliers are suspended throughout the space to set the tone for formality while also providing striking focal points,” she says. “The finely crafted furniture is elegant and inviting with soft seating and graceful lines.”
Effortless elegance is what Amy Studebaker and Jamie Reeves set to achieve with this beautiful bath – and achieve it they did! Per the clients’ request, the duo carefully carried both color and texture from the adjoining master bedroom. “Instead of putting color on the walls, the millwork and the elegantly designed vanity were painted in a warm blue that pulled from the wallpaper in the master bedroom to create a soothing and serene feeling in the space,” notes the designers. Their effort paid off, as judges applauded their work. “The use of color in this space truly sets it apart,” notes one judge.

When a client of Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath requested an oasis, an oasis is what she got. “She wanted her space to be light, bright and cheerful, yet simple and classic,” designer Rebekah Murphy says, “not overadorned with design accoutrements that can quickly outdate themselves.” Murphy selected beautiful brushed-brass fixtures and champagne gold hardware to perfectly accent the champagne glass mosaic tile, while adding wainscot wood paneling and custom mirrors to make the space feel luxurious and balanced with timeless simplicity. “It truly is a charming space, perfectly reflecting the unique charm of the homeowner herself and the beautiful home she resides in,” adds Murphy.

Photo by Ann Matheis When designing this master bedroom, CJ Knapp of Yours by Design installed a light patterned carpet against a light paint scheme featuring oversize stripes that truly set the tone for this neutral, yet regal, room. “The wide stripes really set the tone here,” a judge notes. Knapp even revamped the window seat by designing mini headboards to mimic the main bed in the space and also integrated fewer cushions and more custom throws for a more comforting feel. Plus, who can resist playful polar bear benches at the foot of the bed? The judges certainly couldn’t. “A fun and comfortable bedroom design,” a judge notes.

Photo by Sara Luigs When Cure Design Group’s Cori Dyer was tasked with designing an oversize dining room, she chose clean lines and a crisp color palette to anchor the space. “Dark espresso wood floors [and] a cool-hued tone to the painted walls offer a neutral backdrop to the custom dining chairs and refinished wood dining table in a fawn finish,” Dyer says. “Pops of original artwork add character and interest while allowing this traditional space to take shape.” The custom dining chairs truly spoke to the judges. “The chairs are a lovely accent that brings this room together,” a judge notes.

Gigi Lombrano Photo by Anne Matheis
When Gigi Lombrano was asked to repurpose a library into an elegant dining room that also showcased the clients’ antiques, she created a space fit for royalty. “A grand traditional dining room design,” one judge notes. “The architectural elements are highlighted nicely with the artwork.” Lombrano, of Gigi Lombrano Interiors, started with the statement-making damask fabric showcased on the backs of the dining chairs, adding the fuchsia embroidered silk panels to the windows and the deconstructed fuchsia area rug to tie the space together. Painting the once-dark paneling with metallic paint, though, is what truly brightened the room, with assistance from a stunning crystal chandelier.

Photo by Megan Thiele-Lorenz What started with a client’s desire to have a dining table with a treelike base grew into a dramatic design that beautifully blends nature and texture. “We set out to blend the timeless with the unexpected,” says Brett Clark of Savvy Surrounding Style. “We achieved this dichotomy by combining both classic materials and traditional silhouettes with more unique geometry and a play with color and textures.” The room is now appointed with a marble-meets-gold dining table against traditional round dining chairs and a contemporary chandelier. With plenty of natural light accenting the space, Clark achieved a dramatic balance of nature and contemporary nuance. “Color, pattern, texture – it all works in this space,” a judge reflects.

Ken Henry
Photo by Anne Matheis “Rustic meets glam” describes the approach Ken Henry of Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath took for this kitchen design. “Because the kitchen is in the center of all the indoor living space, appliances were concealed whenever possible,” Henry says. “The house features a rustic design with chunky, truss-style beams in the adjacent great room, so a glazed, distressed cabinetry finish was selected.” The kitchen’s statement pieces are the dual islands – the outermost island featuring a farmhouse sink, dishwasher and seating and the innermost island designed as a large food-prep station. “[It’s a] great mix of wood tones and whites,” one judge notes. “Mix-in countertops [are] well done.”

Jenny Rausch
Photo by Lisa Mitchell One would never imagine that this simple yet stunning space was “rebuilt from the rotting floors up!” as described by Jenny Rausch of Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath. Although the designer mentions a good chunk of the clients’ budget being eaten by the construction phase, the judges didn’t seem to mind. “Sometimes it’s more difficult to design on a budget than one with no budget,” one judge notes. “This is the reality of design, and in this case, [Rausch was] spot on!” Rausch added shiplap to the walls for texture and interest, shelving instead of cabinets and laminate countertops due to budgetary constraints. “Can a laminate-counter kitchen win?” Rausch asks hypothetically. “We shall see!”

Photo by Karen Palmer Photography Simple, clean and chic may not seem like strong adjectives on their own, yet together they describe a stunning kitchen most wouldn’t mind claiming for themselves. “It was important to choose finishes that would [not only] stand the test of time, but that [also] would stand out,” LU Design Build designer Jennifer Chapman says. The clients wanted a kitchen perfect for entertaining, so they requested a large island to accommodate guests. “We designed this island at 186 inches long,” Chapman says. And the judges certainly appreciated the uniquely spacious selection. “Impactful,” states one judge of the island. “Fresh, streamlined, clean.”

Photo by Alise O’Brien Art is truly the heart of this living space by Directions in Design designer Jane Ganz. “Our clients expressed a simple request for their living room makeover: an area with a soft, peaceful palette as a background to the vibrancy of their art,” Ganz says. Ganz first updated the fireplace by raising the base and creating a linear display. One wall was then “stair-stepped out” and covered in marble for a sleek, contemporary look. “The artwork steals the show – as was the plan,” one judge notes. “Great use of lighting as a frame and built-ins as display.”

“Sophisticated and playful” is a hard balance to strike, but Next Project Studio designers Dana King and Meg Wilson married the two as if they were meant to be all along. “Our clients … One likes a very modern industrial vibe, and the other loves playful and color,” King says. “They wondered how the two styles could blend to create their living spaces, [and] I think we hit the mark.” King updated the paint, lighting, furniture, accessories, shelving, motorized shades and fireplace, and her hard work was recognized by the judges. “The fireplace is a simply beautiful focal point in this room and really makes the artwork shine,” a judge says.

When designing the outdoor space for a 1930s bungalow for clients with three teenagers and three dogs, Castle Design’s Meghan Heeter seamlessly extended the living area from inside out. “Rather than pack up and move to a larger home in the burbs, this young family decided to invest in their cherished home and create an outdoor living space where they could entertain, relax and enjoy time together year-round,” Heeter says. “This was a true extension of this charming home.” Judges especially loved Heeter’s use of color in the transformed retreat. “‘Soft and bright’ makes an outdoor living space a true extension of this home,” notes a judge.

Jim Graeler
Photo by Andria Graeler You know an outdoor renovation is strong when it looks original to the space’s design and build. That’s exactly what Jim Graeler of Chesterfield Valley Nursery aimed to do with this home. “The pavilion’s stonework was designed to mimic the brick-and-veneer combination that the main house features in the front,” Graeler says. “From the covered kitchen, large natural stone steps descend down to a second level which consists of a large concrete patio, hot tub area and natural waterfall flowing into the pool.” What Graeler described as one of his “biggest undertakings” was also described by the judges as “lovely, beautiful and fantastic.”

The lush landscape of this outdoor space would give even The Secret Garden, the 1911 classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a run for its money. “Given that the backyard wasn’t overly large in size, careful planning to meet the code requirements was the first priority,” Gigi Lombrano says. “Once the footprint of the loggia was established, the seating area could be designed to incorporate comfortable lounge seating, a fire pit, a ceiling fan and wall heaters for added comfort and warmth in the winter months.” The Gigi Lombrano Interiors design team’s intricate planning paid off. “The charming cottage feel really invites you to want to relax and enjoy this space for hours on end,” a judge says.

vacation home is more than an escape from one’s regular routine. It becomes a refuge and a reflection of its inhabitants. Whether the home is right here in St. Louis or in a picturesque location across the country, Savvy Surrounding Style, an award-winning residential and commercial interior design firm, knows how to translate a client’s personality and preferences through design. “We listen to the client’s needs and propose solutions based on their individual style, not our own,” details interior designer Brett Clark. “We help clients to develop a personal aesthetic.” Recently, Clark took on this challenge with a Malibu vacation home. Curating the client’s individualized style was the initial step. Relaying that style to a team in California was another challenge entirely, for which the designers at Savvy

are well suited. “We work with the builders, developers and architects to communicate the aspirations of the client and to help facilitate a great outcome,” Clark explains. “[The client wanted] to create a tranquil and soft, resort-like escape that centered on the floor-to-ceiling view of the Pacific Coast.” To achieve this aesthetic, Clark took inspiration from the home’s focal point: that outstanding view. Each design element draws the eye to the coastline by acting as an elegant, understated frame to the wall of windows. The property’s exterior echoes that of a beach cottage. As a contrast, the new design opens up the interior with simple, seductive lines. “Upon entering, you find contemporary living spaces that extend outdoors to large balconies, which overlook the Pacific Ocean,” describes Clark. “The harder lines and finishes of this space are softened by a wonderful,

neutral palette in various textures and shapes.” So, did the design nail the client’s vision? “Mission accomplished!” Clark reports. “The client arrived and felt enthusiastic about her tranquil retreat. She and her family often visit the new home. We love seeing snapshots of the [property] on her social media.” That response is a natural one for Savvy clients. The full-service, locally-owned design firm continues to prove itself a cut above the rest, ready to take on a one-room project or a home in a whole other state. And that’s because a passion for the job is evident in every single Savvy designer. “We love getting out of our comfort zones in a new city and putting our stamp outside of St. Louis,” Clark agrees. For Julie Lane, the notion of doing something you love for a living may not have seemed like the most practical approach to a career. Her passion would not let her give up that easily, though. “I was always interested in real estate,” she recalls. “My dad was a farmer, and I grew up watching him buy and sell land. Upon moving here from Chicago, I took a job in pharmaceutical sales. Our girls were babies at the time. I [found myself] watching the local real estate market every chance I could.” Soon, practicality posed its own problems. Lane’s pharmaceutical job began requiring her to travel with increasing frequency. “I wanted to have a job that was challenging, would keep me tethered to the community that we loved living in and, most importantly, would allow me to tuck my girls in every night,” Lane expresses. Since then, she has learned a valuable lesson: “Do

AgelessBeauty
E
By Alecia Humphreys
ven if you live an active, healthy lifestyle, Father Time is likely to present you with fine lines, wrinkles and maybe even a dark spot or two. Luckily, scientists continue to formulate products that offer ageless beauty benefits.
1. While light hair loss is normal when brushing or fixing your hair, thinning tresses and moving hairlines are not – and that can be scary. Thankfully, Karanique’s DELUX REGROWTH HAIR SYSTEM is clinically proven to help regrow hair in women. This introductory kit includes a lift-and-repair treatment spray, scalp-stimulating shampoo, volumizing keratin conditioner and hair-regrowth treatment for women. Simply use the shampoo and conditioner, applying six sprays of the treatment twice a day, directly onto the hair-loss area. Apply the lifting spray, distributing the product from root to end, and blow-dry. Keranique, $49, ulta.com

2. Loosening skin is commonly associated with aging; however, thinning skin can be just as common (and even painful). Luckily, BIOEFFECT EGF SERUM’s barley-based replica of the naturally occurring skin protein EGF (an acronym for epidermal growth factor) is proven to increase skin thickness and density, while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Simply apply two to four drops of this cellular age-defying product to the face and neck on clean, dry skin before bed, gently rubbing in. Bioeffect, $160, sephora.com
4. The OLEHENRIKSEN Day Transform Plus day-and-night dynamic duo promises age-defying benefits with bakuchiol – a natural retinol alternative that is derived from the Ayurvedic babchi herb. Apply the TRANSFORM PLUS GLOW CYCLE RETIN-ALT POWER SERUM in the a.m. to awaken the complexion and smooth the skin’s surface – even while reducing the size of pores and dark spots. Apply the TRANSFORM PLUS GOODNIGHT GLOW RETIN-ALT SLEEPING CRÈME before bed to awaken with a dreamy, balanced and moisturized complexion. Power Serum, $58; Sleeping Crème, $55, olehenriksen.com

LUSH
LAKE
By Robyn Dexter Photos by Amanda T Photography and Elizabeth Lloyd Photography
Less than an hour from here Lies a stunning property that’s swiftLy becoming one of the area’s most sought-after wedding venues: The Venue aT Maison du Lac.
C
ecily Hoffius and Judith Bellos have been in business together for 37 years. In the decades they’ve run Ces & Judy’s Catering, they’ve seen the rise in the wedding industry and its plethora of opportunities. Intrigued by the possibilities, the successful duo shut down their Frontenac location to start a new venture: The Venue at Maison du Lac. Previously, Hoffius and Bellos would visit friends of theirs who lived on a gorgeous 20-acre piece of private property in Catawissa, Missouri, less than an hour from the metro area. The property featured an 1840s stone house and sat right on a breathtaking lake. “It feels like you are in another country,” Hoffius says. When she and Bellos found out their friends were putting the property up for sale, they jumped at the chance to convert it into a wedding venue. They purchased the piece of land two years ago and got to work. As with any project, “It took longer than expected,” Hoffius says. They started construction in December 2017 and had their first wedding in July. Due to its “another country” feel, The Venue at Maison du Lac has attracted engaged couples across the Midwest – especially those who want a getaway-type atmosphere without the lengthy travel. “The thing that pushed us in this direction was all the people who seemed to be looking for what felt like a destination wedding but didn’t want to get on a plane,” Hoffius says. “We’ve created a destination that’s easily accessible from St. Louis.”
The premises feature a minimalist, modern building that the duo calls “the perfect blank canvas” for weddings of all shapes and sizes. It’s 7,000 square feet with high ceilings and large windows and features a deck overlooking the lake. The 19th-century stone house provides the perfect backdrop for photos and also serves as a luxury bridal room. Hoffius and Bellos liked the idea of contrasting the rustic, countryside feel of the surrounding area with a modern steel-and-glass building, and architect Peter Tao was able to design something that fit the vision. “We try to keep the building simple inside so the couples can turn it into anything they want,” Hoffius says. “The building sits right at the edge of the lake looking back at the stone house, so it’s a beautiful setting. We even purchased a small property next door to create a parking lot so we didn’t have to take out any trees.” Since the site’s first wedding this past summer, Hoffius says she and Bellos have hosted three others, along with a post-funeral luncheon, a rehearsal dinner and a few parties. Though they haven’t hosted one yet, Hoffius says the space is also ideal for corporate retreat-type getaways. Despite the glass and steel, the sound quality inside is impeccable, and visitors have an opportunity to fish and explore the great outdoors, as well. “It’s been exciting and a lot of work,” Hoffius says. “Judy and I are the ones taking visitors on tours, and we’ve had a lot of interest. We don’t quite have the landscaping look quite
finished, but we are doing a lot of planting now and through the fall.” When asked what sets The Venue apart from other wedding and event spaces, Hoffius doesn’t skip a beat. “The setting is what sets us apart,” she says. “It’s just so beautiful out here. It’s relaxing.” After 37 years in the catering business, Hoffius and Bellos have seen countless events take place. They know what little things can really make a wedding day pop, and their new venue venture gives them the opportunity to bring that to their customers. In addition to The Venue’s use as a prime spot for weddings and other events, the pair plans to host events for people in the Catawissa area. “We’d love to do things in the coming years that are more inclusive to people in the area,” Hoffius says. “We could host movie nights and music nights for the public and give people a chance to see this beautiful spot.” Hoffius says people ask her all the time when she’s going to retire, but it won’t be anytime soon. “Long term, Judy and I just hope we are busy every day,” she says. “We love this business, and if we didn’t love it, we wouldn’t be in it. Seeing the looks on the faces of happy attendees – that’s what keeps us all going. It’s hard to give that up.” The Venue at Maison du Lac, 2603 Wild Plum Valley Road, Catawissa, 314-991-6700, thevenuestl.com

JUST MARRIED
DR. & MRS.
FRIEDMAN

By Amanda Dahl
n June 9 in St. Louis, Thúy-Lan Võ Lite and Dr. Gabriel Nathan Friedman were married at the Lumen Private Event Space, with a festive celebration that incorporated both Jewish and Vietnamese traditions. The bride is the daughter of Dr. Thúy-Liêũ Võ and the late Dr. Howard Lite of St. Louis. Thúy-Lan is the granddaughter of Jacob Lite and the late Paula Lite of St. Louis; and Mỹ Lê Võ of Shakopee, Minnesota, and the late Thuần Văn Võ of Oklahoma City. She is an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate at Harvard Medical School and MIT. The groom is the son of Dr. Carol and Richard Friedman of Skokie, Illinois. Gabriel is the grandson of Kay Friedman and the late Howard Friedman, also of Skokie; and the late Anneliese Dreifus and Franz Otto Nebauer of Columbus, Ohio. He is a neurological surgery resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. The couple honored their parents and grandparents with a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony, for which the bride donned a red-and-gold áo dài, a traditional Vietnamese wedding garment, and a matching gold crown. From a LaCroix bar to a cocktail hour with his-and-hers drinks, special elements abounded throughout the couple’s big day. Thúy-Lan changed into her white wedding dress for the ceremony and the reception. She and Gabriel exchanged her parents’ inscribed wedding rings, to which the bride and groom added their own names. After breaking the glass during the ceremony, the couple enjoyed a celebration, during which guests hoisted up the pair in their chairs to dance the hora. In lieu of the traditional wedding cakecutting ceremony, Thúy-Lan and Gabriel exchanged delicious bites of ice cream cones. For their honeymoon, the couple traveled to Geneva, London, Prague and Amsterdam prior to the wedding, in order to accommodate the groom’s neurosurgical residency schedule. Thúy-Lan and Gabriel reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Pumpkin-Tahini Breakfast Muffins Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott | Photo by Drew Piester
F
ew joys in life are as quintessential as pumpkin in the fall. Start crisp October mornings right with these savory pumpkin-tahini muffins paired with a piping-hot cup of coffee. These muffins are perfectly moist and have a nice, round nutty flavor, sweetness and spice courtesy of the tahini. Tahini, which is made with hulled and toasted sesame seeds, is a staple in Middle Eastern and North African cuisines; if you haven’t worked with it much, these easy-to-make muffins make an ideal introduction.
ln
PUMPKIN-TAHINI BREAKFAST MUFFINS Muffins will keep for about two days after baking if stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Serves | 12 |
1⅓ cups all-purpose flour ⅓ cup rolled oats 1 tsp baking soda ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp salt nonstick cooking oil spray 1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup maple syrup
½ cup olive oil 2 eggs 1 cup pumpkin purée 2 Tbsp sour cream ¼ cup tahini 1 tsp vanilla extract ½ cup chopped dates ¼ cup chopped pistachios
| Preparation | Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine first six ingredients, and set aside. Spray a pair of six-cup muffin tins with nonstick cooking oil spray, and set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine next eight ingredients and beat on medium speed until combined. Slowly add flour mixture to wet ingredients; blend until combined. Fold in dates. Spoon batter into prepared muffin tins, filling three quarters full, and sprinkle pistachios on top. Bake in oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Transfer muffins to a wire rack to cool to room temperature.

Meet Averi, her story began when her parents learned through a prenatal ultrasound that they would have twins and only Averi would have a combination of serious heart defects along with a rare Chromosomal deletion causing multiple life threatening illnesses. Since birth Averi has undergone multiple surgeries which include five cardiac surgeries, four cardiac caths, three ophthalmological surgeries, two major abdominal surgeries resulting in the loss of three feet of her small intestine along with countless other procedures. At age 4, tests determined Averi had another serious health hurdle, hypogammaglobulinemia, an immune deficiency caused by low immunoglobulin antibody levels in the blood which require her to visit the infusion center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital monthly for IVIG treatments to keep her infection free. Most recently, Averi has been diagnosed with a rare genetic deletion which caused Peutz Jeghers Syndrome that allows polyps to grow quickly in the intestines. Averi will need lifelong surveillance to ensure no further damage is done to her abdomen and she relies on a multi-disciplinary team at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to monitor her.

Roxy

MCFADDEN FAMILY
By Robyn Dexter
PHOTOS BY CHRISTINA KLING-GARRETT
ONCE UPON A TIME, A YOUNG PIT bull/boxer mix was picked up wandering the streets of the city. Crestwood Animal Shelter took her in and set her up with a foster family while she waited for her forever home. On one of her first days with her foster family, she jumped the backyard fence and ran off. Her foster mom whistled for her, and she returned, earning her the name Whistle. Her high energy levels, though, were too much for her foster family, and she ended up going back to the shelter, waiting to be adopted. In spring of last year, Patricia McFadden and her boyfriend adopted a dog named Moose from Stray Rescue. Moose was great with their little family, but when McFadden’s father became ill after Christmas, she and her sister planned a trip to see him in Florida. When her sister came down with a bug, though, the two delayed their trip. Moose died suddenly that weekend. “One day she was fine, and the next day she was gone,” McFadden remembers. “She had a respiratory issue that was too much for her.” The next weekend, still distraught over the loss of Moose, McFadden and her sister went to Florida. Before she left, McFadden saw a photo of Whistle on a friend’s social media page and inquired about the dog. “I told them we were interested in meeting her, but that we had a family emergency and would check in when we got back,” McFadden says. “I left it at that, thinking the thing with my dad would be over pretty quickly, and he’d be better soon.” Unfortunately, a few weeks later, McFadden’s father passed away. To add to her sorrow, McFadden also found out Whistle had been adopted. But there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Crestwood Animal Shelter contacted McFadden to share that Whistle had been returned to their care. The shelter staff relayed that if McFadden was still interested in Whistle, it might be best for her and her boyfriend to get to know the pup slowly. “I work at night, so before work I’d go take her for walks at the shelter,” McFadden says. “They brought in a trainer from the East Coast to work with [Whistle], and we slowly got to know her better.” McFadden and her boyfriend officially adopted the
dog, renamed Roxy, at the end of March. Though the shelter gave them a month trial period during which Roxy could be returned, McFadden knew the pup had found her forever family. Roxy loves to go for walks, play ball and gnaw on chew bones. The high-energy pup is estimated to be about 2 years old, and McFadden says she “still has a lot of puppy in her.” But thanks to the trainer and numerous shelter staff members who were “really invested in her,” Roxy is much more ready to handle day-to-day life with her people.
“She loves people and is so smart,” McFadden says. “She was kind of aloof at the shelter because so much was going on. But over the past few months, she’s really started to trust us. It’s been so nice to see how she’s grown and settled in as an awesome member of our family.”

FITNESS The revamped Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa wants to be your one-stop fitness shop. By Allison Pohle | Photos courtesy of Wellbridge
I
n the past few decades, the metro area has filled with exercise and wellness studios, with spaces catering to every type of fitness fanatic. High-intensity workout fans can get their sweat on at boot camp classes, while burgeoning ballerinas can tone their muscles at the barre. Many of these studios require individual memberships, which means those who like to attend Pilates one day and CrossFit the next can easily end up with multiple – if not too many – subscription passes. Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa, which reopened in late August in the heart of the Centene Clayton Campus, hopes to change that by becoming the go-to facility for all things fitness in the metro area. “We’ve created a one-stop shop for fitness,” says Azeza Tessereau, Wellbridge’s general manager. “I think the convenience sets it apart for the community.” The 40,000-square-foot facility is part of Centene Corporation’s $770 million expansion project in Clayton. The multisport Wellbridge moved next door from its former location at 7620 Forsyth Blvd. to its new digs at 7676 Forsyth Blvd., where it now occupies two stories in the building. Tessereau says Wellbridge saw the move as an opportunity to reinvent the club: The new facility offers more than 140 classes a week across six studios, a full-service spa, an indoor pool, a child care center, and member lounge and work areas. To keep up with clients who want the latest trends, the facility will embrace its new Atlas studio, a concept space that will change every six months. The studio is equipped with BoxMaster boxing training stations, which also can be used in kickboxing classes, and Assault Fitness treadmills, which Tessereau says feel like “running on a cloud.” The studio is also equipped with rowers and a suspension component, all of which can be changed out or used in various combinations to create challenging new workouts. “The options are endless,” Tessereau says. Members can also work on their mental fitness. Wellbridge will offer hot yoga for the first time, allowing yogis to practice in temperatures up to 104 degrees. The facility will also feature aerial yoga, where an antigravity wall allows advanced acrobatics to turn their practice on its head – literally. “You can make it super-challenging or more of a restorative practice,” Tessereau says. “And we can also make use of the wall for classes like power barre.” And if you’re not able to make it to a certain class, instruction can be played on demand through the streaming of Les Mills programming. A new Spinning studio will also feature on-demand video instruction, and members can make use of more than 60 pieces of cardio equipment that now allow users to log in to their Netflix accounts to binge-watch their favorite shows as they work out. “Whether you’re 20, 50 or 70, if you want to lead an active lifestyle, you’re excited about seeing studios that cater to your needs,” says JoAnna Masloski, the CEO of Wellbridge. “We’re looking at the whole person and how we can better serve [him or her].” That’s why the upscale Wellbridge facility also features a community space where members are encouraged to gather and stay after their workouts, whether to grab a coffee or a smoothie from the Energy Bar or to make use of the work area. Parents can also take advantage of age-appropriate child care services for children 12 and under. The new facility opens at 5 a.m. on weekdays and stays open until 10 p.m. On weekends, the hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We’ve been part of this community for many years, and we’re excited to remain part of it,” Masloski says. “We want to be the community’s club, a place where people can come, stay and play, and continue to inspire as we look at the next generation of fitness.”

t Missouri Baptist Medical Center, specialized care is the norm. The hospital houses two centers focused on neurological medical care for stroke or Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients.
Stroke Center The Joint Commission awarded Missouri Baptist Medical Center with a “Certificate of Distinction as a Primary Stroke Center” for its impressive program, which allows for the proper diagnosis, treatment and management of patients who present with stroke symptoms. “Annually, we treat more than 1,000 patients with strokes,” notes Dr. J. Michael Hatlelid, a neurologist and the medical director of Stroke Services, where multidisciplinary healthcare providers work together as members of the Primary Stroke Team. “We are aggressive with strokes because we want to prevent disability,” adds Dr. Hatlelid. Missouri Baptist Medical Center increased patient care efficiencies with the addition of a CT scanner and diagnostic X-ray room within the emergency department. “We provide individualized treatment based on the patient’s limitations and goals,” shares lead therapist Sarah Wilhite, DPT. It is this dedication to each patient that makes Missouri Baptist Medical Center a leader in healthcare.
Multiple SCleroSiS A life-changing diagnosis, MS often appears without warning. “We listen to our patients, and provide care [centered on] their symptoms and goals,” says Dr. Barbara Green, a neurologist and MS specialist at The MS Center for Innovations in Care. MS, but the disease can be managed when properly monitored with routine brain MRIs. “Major advances in MS therapy over the past several years have changed the course of MS,” notes Dr. Barry Singer, a neurologist and the director of The MS Center. “[Because] we are better able to control the disease, patient improvements have been dramatic.” For the doctors and medical staff at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, it is critical to develop strong relationships with patients, especially when dealing with a lifelong disease like MS. “A team of professionals partners with and supports them, with the latest treatments, education and services,” shares Dr. Green. “We want to help patients live well with MS.” Missouri Baptist Medical Center, 3015 N. on the planet,” says Chris Knape, vice president of marketing and communications of BarFly Ventures, HopCat’s parent company. “We’re trying to make unique spaces everywhere we go. One of the things we talk about a lot is how every location has its own feel. They all have a locally managed beer program that provides a showcase for local craft beer. That, combined with great playlists, makes a really comfortable, casual environment for our guests.” Managing HopCat here is Michael Hartman, with Brent Lenny as beer program lead. Cannily, the taproom’s grand opening coincided with St. Louis Craft Beer Week, from July 27 to Aug. 4; since then, HopCat’s taps have regularly included 30 to 40 Missouri options, as well as rotating regional,
national and international selections. Gluten-free and nonalcoholic beers are also available. To assist with narrowing the vast zymurgic offerings, guests are allotted a couple of complimentary 2-ounce samples per visit. Build-your-own flights featuring a trio of 5-ounce pours are available, and the beverage menu also includes wine and cocktails. “One of the things that really makes HopCat stand out in the craft beer scene is the amount of care and effort we put into training our staff to help others explore craft beer,” Knape says. “We want people to feel comfortable asking questions, getting samples and trying new things. We want to provide an environment where there’s not the intimidation some people feel when they walk into a craft beer bar.”

Story: How does one become a popular and famous caterer with a best-selling autobiography? In the case of Chef Rossi, self-proclaimed “Jewish, lesbian, punkrock caterer,” it all begins in an Orthodox Jewish home in New Jersey. That’s where Rossi and her two siblings were raised by their seldom-speaking father – who even shortened two words such as “shut up” into “shup” for brevity – and their ever-economizing mother, who prided herself on purchasing eight cans of asparagus on triple-double coupon day. Fast-forward and Rossi is now a fixture on the New York City catering scene, running a place called The Raging Skillet, a title she believes reflects her feminist, hardcore-rock, anything-goes culinary philosophy. So here we are at the book launch of Rossi’s The Raging Skillet, at which the audience is divided into sectors – each of which samples such Rossi delicacies as chocolate-covered kosher bacon, pizza bagels and shiitake appetizers (depending on where they’re seated). While she and her staff prepare these morsels, Rossi fills us in on her story: how her family’s homecooked meals ceased when her mother discovered the microwave, and then how Rossi ran away from home as a teen and entered the school of hard knocks, learning the art of cheffery from chauvinistic kitchen tyrants both on land and at sea. She persevered, though, eventually finding a market for her outlandish concoctions such as the Snickers Potato Chip Casserole and a clientele that appreciates her politics, as well as her food. She’s a bit miffed, however, because this book tour has been usurped by her mother, even though mom died 25 years ago, dispensing an abundance of matronly advice and encouraging her daughter to remember her Jewish roots. Isn’t that just like a Jewish mother? Highlights: New artistic director Edward Coffield unwraps the 22nd season of the New Jewish Theatre with this humorous, pleasant skirmish between an iron-willed mother and her equally defiant daughter, who have more in common than they might think. Other Info: Rossi herself was on hand on opening night of the troupe’s 2018-19 season, three years after a triumphant appearance at the 2015 St. Louis Jewish Book Festival. She surely was impressed by the raucous, funfilled extravaganza directed by Lee Anne Mathews and delightfully performed by Sarajane Alverson as Rossi, troupe founder and long-time artistic director Kathleen Sitzer as her mother and Erin Renee Roberts as Rossi’s sous-chef and part-time platter-spinner, DJ Skillet. Roberts also fills a plethora of minor roles such as Rossi’s dad, a Rastafarian woman-hater and a bevy of foulmouthed kitchen workers. Be advised, by the way, that the script by Jacques Lamarre drips with four-letter words to the point of
By Mark Bretz
tedium. Rhodes scholars Rossi, DJ Skillet and many of the minor characters obviously aren’t. The one-act comedy moves at an engaging clip under Mathews’ insightful guidance, enhanced by the vividly imaginative set concocted by Dunsi Dai, which features two preparation tables at each side of the set, a quartet of bar stools in red and green, a screen above the proceedings and a lofty perch for DJ Skillet to roll out many a familiar rock tune, next to a firefighter’s pole that she descends periodically to converse with Rossi. All three of the performers are top-notch in their portrayals, keeping their audience transfixed with the over-the-top comedy as well as some surprising moments of poignancy. Of particular note is the “book” written by Rossi’s mom and left with her daughter after Rossi is especially insulting. What’s contained in that tome reveals a woman considerably more accomplished than we’re led to believe throughout most of the play. It gives one pause to recognize that Rossi’s flair and creativity didn’t happen by accident. A special note of thanks is due the catering team, dubbed The Rossis, namely Myrna Hershman, Judi Berger, Julie Frankel and Paula Sigel, who bring Rossi’s high-spirited recipes to glorious life. Coffield wisely understands that handing out free food and beverages to a receptive audience is never a bad idea. For dessert, check out Mathews’ director’s notes in the program, chock-full of a wide array of clichés centered on food and eating. It will garnish your enjoyment of this sensory sensation of a show.

The Sunset Hills Historical Society invites the public to a program that features DON CORRIGAN and his most recent book, Forest Park, at Sunset Hills City Hall. Corrigan, the editor of the South County Times newspaper, also serves as a professor of journalism at Webster University. He’s authored other books of local interest, including Show Me … Natural Wonders and Show Me … Nature’s Wrath. Forest Park, a part of the Images of America series by Arcadia Publishing, focuses on the history and development of our favorite St. Louis landmark. Forest Park was dedicated in 1876 and became the venue for the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904. That event, of course, celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and became an international exposition, as well as the venue for the 1904 Olympics. Corrigan received a big assist with archival research on these historical events from co-author Holly Shanks. 7 p.m. Free. sunset-hills.com.

Families are invited to celebrate Halloween early with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Lemony Snicket’s murder-mystery whodunit, THE COMPOSER IS DEAD. The concert gives young music-loving sleuths the opportunity to unravel the mystery of who killed the composer in a concert of wit, wonder and whimsy. Families are encouraged to arrive early for the orchestra’s Instrument Playground – where children ages 5 to 12 can explore, touch and play musical instruments. Starting at 2 p.m. before each family concert, families can discover many different orchestral instruments in this hands-on experience located in Powell Hall’s Wightman Grand Foyer in St. Louis’ Covenant Blu-Grand Center neighborhood. Costumes are encouraged, with trick-ortreat stations available prior to the concert. 3 p.m. Tickets start at $8 for children. slso.org.

One of the metro area’s preeminent artistic showcases portrays the loveliness of limbs – and boughs and branches and trunks and twigs.

Adam Long, St. Charles, MO; In the Green Hills
A
week ago, St. Charles’ Foundry Art Centre opened a free juried exhibition taking as its general focus a topic as old as Eden: trees. “Out on a Limb” runs through Dec. 28 in the 501(c)(3) nonprofit’s bright, chic expanse, occupying roughly half of the erstwhile train car factory’s 5,200-squarefoot state-of-the-art display space in its Gallery III and Ameristar Gallery, according to Natalie Tucker, the center’s exhibition manager. “Out on a Limb,” Tucker reveals, originated with another international exhibition there, “Out of the Woods: Celebrating Trees in Public Gardens, the American Society of Botanical Artists/ New York Botanical Garden Third Triennial,” occupying half of its gallery space, “leaving ample room for another exhibition,” she says. “The variety of species of trees, approaches to representing the plants and ways of working with their raw material leave so much room for artistic creativity. Curating ‘Out on a Limb’ to accompany ‘Out of the Woods’ provides the perfect opportunity to display these many artistic interpretations while providing a continuity of motif.” Partnering as jurors on “Out on a Limb” were Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the esteemed Missouri Botanical Garden and the George Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University, and St. Louis artist/photographer Michael Schoenewies, whose website declares he “enjoys the beauty in decay,” assisted by “jury facilitator” Jody Williams. Tucker also credits Williams for inspiring the exhibition’s subdivision. “Williams brought to our attention that there is too much talent in the botanical art community for just one show about trees,” she says. “However, we didn’t want to visually compete with the traveling exhibition and wanted to present a show that’s uniquely its own. “Trees provide a fun theme for artists to respond to, for the theme can be as specific as it is vague. Therefore, we decided to bifurcate ‘Out on a Limb’ into
two ‘branches,’ if you will. The ‘Botanical Art Branch’ will showcase more exemplary traditional botanical works, and the ‘Open Media Branch’ diversifies the arboreal collection by including alternative and contemporary approaches to the subject.” More specifically, according to the center’s website, “Out on a Limb” seeks with that first branch to “engage in the traditional art of creating botanically accurate 2D portrayals of trees in hand applied media,” while the second involves “botanically inspired 2D or 3D pieces depicting tree subjects or created from materials derived from trees (wood, bark, etc.).” Geographically, the exhibition involves a fairly impressive selection. “‘Out on a Limb’ features 53 artworks created by 45 different artists from 13 states and four nations,” Tucker says. “Twenty-two of the artists are from the bistate region of Missouri and Illinois. The nations represented are the United States, Canada, Japan and Scotland. Interestingly, five of the 39 artists exhibiting in ‘Out of the Woods’ are also exhibiting works in ‘Out on a Limb.’” The types of art attracted to the exhibition and ultimately chosen for it proved pleasurably impressive, Tucker continues. “Nearly 300 works were submitted for consideration in ‘Out on a Limb,’ and we were pleasantly surprised by the range of work entered,” she says, adding that the jurors curated a panoply of works in different media. “For example, gold and silver medal winners from ‘Out of the Woods’ Asuka Hishiki and Lucy Martin, respectively, have watercolor and gouache pieces in ‘Out on a Limb.’ Multimedia sculptures are included, as well as jewelry and wood-turned vessels. You’ll find trees portrayed in oil paintings, prints, quilts and photographs on the gallery walls.” Perhaps predictably, Tucker adopts an almost naturalistic perspective in discussing how best visitors can maximize their viewing pleasure at the exhibition. “I believe the best attitude to take when viewing ‘Out on a Limb’ is one akin to that of taking a leisurely stroll through the woods,” she says. “Much of the artwork takes a quiet tone, asking the viewer to take a closer look and examine a part of nature with new eyes. “I’d encourage visitors to come see both of our arboreal exhibitions, prepared to develop a new appreciation for both the skill of the artists and intricacy of the natural world around them. I hope visitors also find wonder in the plethora of styles portraying a single subject – trees.” Foundry Art Centre, 520 N. Main Center, St. Charles, 636-255-0270, foundryartcentre.org
