Don’t you love St. Louis in the fall? As Tom Hanks’ character in “You’ve Got Mail” says: “It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” As much as I would love to deliver each of our readers a pencil bouquet, this issue of Ladue News – featuring stories that highlight learning opportunities in our metro – will have to do. For a way to put those pencils to good use, turn to p. 49, where contributing writer Brittany Nay profiles Maplewood’s Drawn Studio, an art studio and teaching space where aspiring artists of all walks and experience levels are welcome. Or, for getting to know Missouri’s natural lands, flip to p. 12, where staff writer Charlotte Renner spotlights the soon-toopen Spring Bend Park, a conservation area in St. Charles County where visitors can see our natural prairie systems and native species thrive. For fun ways to learn with little ones, flip to p. 14, where contributor Drew Gieseke highlights a milestone achievement for The Community Music School of Webster University, which Kindermusik International recently recognized as a top program for the fifth consecutive year. On p. 52, Sheila Oliveri of St. Louis’ Ready Readers recommends two books to read with kids as fall foliage reaches its peak. Happy learning,
Ashley Klein, Managing Editor

How to Create a Monstrous
“WOW!”

hen renovating and remodeling a historic home, keeping the original charm is often a homeowner’s priority. When it came to a recent Kirkwood project, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath was able to keep the home’s timeless character while giving the design a massive uplift. This featured home was built in the early 1900s on a historical street in Kirkwood, and the homeowners felt it needed someone who cared about that during its renovation. The project included the entire second floor with four bedrooms, a hall bath, a master bath, a laundry room and grand staircase as well as the entry
way and foyer. It needed to be functional for a modern family and yet feel like it could have been there forever. For Karr Bick the goal is always to create #NothingOrdinary. It was clear to do that meant letting this home’s history speak visually with textures, patterns, styles, color, and finishes. The aim and spirit of this entire renovation was to stay so close to its traditional design that, if it were possible, they could get the original architect’s nod of approval. One of the highlights of the remodel is the wallpaper that has been used throughout these spaces, which project a cozy, historic dynamic that feels alive. It speaks artistically with movement and gives life to the old soul of the
home. It was the exact feeling the homeowners wanted to experience. They also experienced Karr Bick’s #NothingOrdinary process. From start to finish, every decision for this renovation happened under one roof with one team. Space planning, design, interior design, product sourcing and construction is available all in one place. Not to mention the talented team executing it all with time saved and headaches avoided. That’s the recipe for creating something magical and creating a monstrous “Wow!” Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath, 2715 Mercantile Drive, Brentwood, 314-645-6545, karrbick.com

GREEN SPACE
SPRING BEND PARK S By Charlotte Renner
ometime next April, flowers will sprout, birds will chirp and St. Louis will look a little greener once again. But next year, spring 2024 will bring a new change to St. Charles County: the addition of a brand new conservation area, Spring Bend Park. Named for a natural spring on the property, Spring Bend Park is primarily an open prairie – a Missouri habitat that desperately needs to be protected. According to the Missouri Prairie Foundation, these native prairies once covered at least 15 million acres of the state; today, however, less than 65,000 acres remain. Up until now, the land belonged to Nancy and William Knowles, who donated Spring Bend Park’s acreage to St. Charles County Parks Department more than 15 years ago, where it’s been held in a trust since their passing. According to their obituaries, the pair were avid nature lovers who spent the majority of their free time spotting birds and

animals from their cabin, hosting wildflower tours on the property, gardening and identifying local flora. “They wanted to ensure that the property was protected and not developed,” St. Charles County marketing coordinator Amy Bartak says. Thanks to the couple’s forwardthinking, their wish will be granted. In 2008, the Parks Department implemented conservation efforts to remove invasive species, establish a thriving prairie system and conduct controlled burns to maintain the ecosystem. Bartak adds that there’s a strict conservation easement on the property, which means preserving the property’s natural beauty is a top priority. “The park will remain in a mostly natural state,” Bartak says. “The main focus will be natural resources, woodlands, prairies and native habitats.” These preservation efforts don’t mean people won’t be able to enjoy the park. In its first stage, Spring Bend Park will feature walking trails,
access to the nearby Katy Trail, parking and restrooms. Eventually, the very cabin Nancy and William used as a family retreat will be repurposed for the park, and guests will be able to spot deer, birds and other wildlife from a new observation deck. According to Bartak, connecting residents to Missouri’s environment is one of the park’s primary goals – and one that Nancy and William Knowles believed in wholeheartedly. “The St. Charles County Parks Department hopes Spring Bend Park will bring a natural oasis to an area of the county that is completely built up with homes and businesses [and provide] opportunities for outdoor education and interaction.” Learn more about Spring Bend Park’s development at sccmo.org/parks-recreation.

offered in three metro locations: Chesterfield, Des Peres and Webster Groves. Led by program leader Crystal Chu-Sharp, who began providing Kindermusik education in 2020, and two additional accredited educators, Aiden Smith and Elizabeth Smith, the school has become a global leader in Kindermusik education. “There’s a lot of consistency with the program, which is strict,” Springer says. “It’s an international program, so all the instructors have to be accredited and go through online training and a practicum with the students in classes.” CMS will celebrate its centennial in 2025. Springer says that school leadership has already begun planning for the occasion, with early ideas
including alumni concerts, headline concerts and more. Even after almost 100 years of operation, what remains most remarkable about CMS is it staying on the cutting edge of music instruction through its Kindermusik programming. For parents and children alike, having a school with such a sterling reputation right in your backyard is part of what makes St. Louis so special. Springer adds: “We really think this is the basis for music education for the future.”

n August 2023, The Community Music School of Webster University was recognized as a top program by Kindermusik International, the world’s leading provider of music-based education for infants, toddlers and young children. This marks the school’s fifth straight year receiving the accolade, and proves the program is stronger than ever, after serving the community for nearly 100 years. “It lays the foundation for future studies,” CMS Director Nicole Springer says. “And if the children who participate don’t pursue music later in life, they still gain other valuable skills.” Founded in 1925, CMS is a Kindermusik Accredited Educator that offers music education and performance programming to students of every age and ability throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. Although CMS offers programming for participants through grade 12 and beyond – approximately 1,200 students are enrolled, early childhood Kindermusik classes are available at several different levels for children ages 0 to 7. They range from foundation-setting for infants to more complex music instruction and education sessions for older children. These sensory-rich classes focus on music by incorporating games and instrument demonstrations performed by instructors. Students also use musical instruments most appropriate for their age group, listen to music and begin the classes by singing a song. “As they get a little bit older, they’re able to use their ear more and follow instructions better,” Springer says. “They’re also able to interact with their class peers more. They gain more confidence, they can work well in a team – especially going into other early childhood programs – and they have a great start in learning the notes on the keyboard.” The Kindermusik Top Program award recognizes excellence in spreading the power of music and movement to young children and their families through Kindermusik’s curricula. CMS first began offering Kindermusik programming in 1993, with Kindermusik classes

KIDS MD
ALL ABOUT PEDIATRIC KIDNEY STONES By Dr. Anand V. Palagiri
W
hen most people think of kidney stones, they think of adults. In recent years, however, there’s been an increase in the incidence of kidney stones in children – and studies conducted on a national level indicate a 22.8 percent increase of pediatric stone disease each year. Findings from a study done in the southeastern United States have demonstrated an alarming increase of symptomatic kidney stones by 84 percent in the pediatric population since 2006. Why is this happening? Along with rising obesity rates in America, several studies have shown that morbidly obese children excrete more oxalate in their urine, predisposing them to form kidney stones. Additionally, children rarely drink the amount of unflavored water they need and are often dehydrated, which leaves them more vulnerable to stone formation. Diet is another factor. Studies show an
increased consumption of dark-colored soft drinks and sweetened drinks, and sodium intake by children is linked to stone formation. Kidney stones most commonly occur in children between ages 10 and 19, with white adolescent females having the most increased risk in developing kidney stones. Most children with kidney stones have vague abdominal pain that often prompts a trip to the emergency room and advanced imaging studies, such as CT scans, to make a diagnosis. Other symptoms include burning upon urination, intense scrotal/labial pain, passage of visible blood in the urine, intense back pain or severe nausea and vomiting. Once a stone is formed in a child, it can be difficult to pass on its own due to the small size of the urinary tract. There are several options to treat this problem. If the stone is unable to pass, minimally invasive removal procedures are available. One method
is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, which pulverizes the stone into sand using shock waves that make it much easier to pass through the child. If ESWL is not appropriate, endoscopic approaches may be useful. With endoscopy, a small telescope is passed through the urinary tract to extract the stone. Although pediatric stone disease is on the rise, it can be treated effectively and safely. Remember, the solution to pollution is dilution. Have your children drink plenty of water!

Luxury LEVELED-UP

Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis aims to become the epitome of luxury with a massive redesign, including its guest suites and event spaces.
D
otting the city skyline, the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis – currently undergoing a massive, multimilliondollar renovation – is already regarded as a luxurious place to stay and play. In its next evolution, the grandiose structure seeks to become a complete retreat, even amid its urban environment. R|5 Design Agency, a local firm, carries a calming aesthetic from the lobby through to freshly designed guest rooms and suites, and a versatile event space enhances the appeal of this downtown mainstay. “Long established as the destination in St. Louis for socializing, gala events and weddings, the hotel’s newly revamped space will once again help attract more people to downtown St. Louis, raising awareness and driving more revenue to the area,” says director of catering Kristen Swidrak. “This includes many philanthropic and charity fundraising events, which also contribute to the greater St. Louis community.” The Mississippi River, seen out the floor-toceiling windows of the bankside hotel, is now reflected in the abstract patterned soft carpeting that decorates the meeting and event areas. “One of the most flexible aspects of our ballroom is the ability for guests to enjoy both an indoor and outdoor option for cocktail hour,” Swidrak says. “Guests can flow between the ballroom lobby and the sixth floor al fresco terrace, which offers stunning views of the Mississippi and the iconic Gateway Arch.” She notes that table

linens and tabletop décor have also been remade to better complement the new venue. “At the Four Seasons, we specialize in a la minute service,” Swidrak says. “This means that everything is made fresh to order, plated by the chef and then hand-carried immediately to the guests by the banquet staff.” Entertaining need not only happen in the event spaces, though. Guests who book the Presidential Suite receive a bevy of customized services in an equally grand, and yet more intimate, surrounding. Measuring more than 2,660 square feet, the suite grants a bird’s eye view from the 19th floor. Decadent design details include a striking marble wall, complete with a gas fireplace, and a frosted glass chandelier that twinkles above a glamorous dining area, with an attached kitchen from which the hotel staff can prepare and plate a feast. To relax, a soak in the freestanding slipper tub might be the order of the day; or, if work is to be done, it is best tended to inside the handsome study, offering an executive-size desk and chair. Manuela Macias, design manager at R|5 Design Agency, states in a press release that the vision for the design was to create a cohesive guest experience throughout each space. This ambiance now echoes from the lobby to each room and throughout the hotel’s many highlights, such as the spa and pool, the Cinder House restaurant or attached Cinder Bar, or the TopGolf Swing Suite. Macias describes that this state of serenity was
epitomized in the guest rooms: “We sought to create a superlative wind-down zone … where guests can relax and enjoy the one-of-a-kind view.” Rich wood paneling, plush textures and watercolor strokes in blue and beige on the walls transport guests to a tranquil setting, with the bustling city surrounding, yet not invading, this serene structure. The hotel continues to pay tribute to St. Louis, though, through curated artwork depicting abstracts of iconic architecture and its sports teams, as seen in Dana Shek’s “Deconstructed Arch” and Eunice Kim’s “Puck Abstract 1 & 2.” General manager Alper Oztok adds, in a separate press release, that “the design provides guests with a strong connection to St. Louis, which is further brought to life by our amazing team of service professionals.” The hotel recently welcomed Ahmed Mohammed to join its staff as banqueting chef, who hails from the Four Seasons hotel located in Cairo, Eqypt. “Chef Ahmed is adding a new level of creativity and a fresh take on both the menu and food presentation,” Swidrak says. She adds: “With these holistic enhancements, from décor to culinary to service, Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis has elevated the hotel’s entire event experience. It also completes another phase of the top-to-bottom renovation plan for the hotel.” Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, 999 N. 2nd St., St. Louis, 314-881-5800, fourseasons.com/stlouis

NEW CITY SCHOOL Feature Story
An Opportunity to GROW N By Maggie Peters Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
o one can fully plan for a natural disaster. However, with creativity and resilience, you can take the situation you’ve been handed and not only recover but also transform it to something positive. When the flooding of summer 2022 damaged the early childhood classrooms of New City School, they took it as an opportunity to fully reimagine the space in a way that furthered the school’s vision of helping children engage in joyful learning and academic excellence while cultivating their passions. “Our mission is pretty distinct, unique and aspirational,” says head of school Alexis Wright. “We’re empowering our children to build community and advocate for a more just and equitable world.” The flood damaged the lower level, affecting 10 classrooms for children ages 3 through kindergarten. In the immediate aftermath, New City School had to pivot to using other school spaces for their classrooms, including the library and cafeteria. “It helped the upper and lower grade children build connections,” says Janine Gorrell, head of the school’s Early Elementary division. “With the kids in the library, a space where all students go, there were 6th graders interacting with 4-year-olds and so on. It built on our pillars of showing up and taking care of ourselves and others in a way that was very genuine.” Along with creating a rejuvenated sense of community throughout the school, it also presented the perfect opportunity to create spaces that better suited
24
New City’s early childhood approach. “We wanted to create a structured but flexible space,” Gorrell explains. “We work in projects that develop over time, giving us the space to allow learning experiences to develop authentically.” The project included opening up the walls, connecting the classrooms with outdoor learning areas and moving offices like Gorrell’s further down the hall to create more space. On top of adding more natural light, the new setup creates more opportunities for students to engage with their senses and collaborate with one another. Gorrell adds that these changes have been received with overwhelming positivity from the students. “They’re so happy; they don’t want to go home at the end of the day,” she says. “They’re so excited to see their friends and be in their space.” After last year’s flood, New City School could have easily put the classrooms back as they were. Instead, leadership saw the opportunity to look at their mission and the needs of their children and made those aspirations a reality. “In so many ways, we’ve taken advantage of a crisis and it feels really good,” Wright concludes. “We’ve had three consecutive years of enrollment growth and growing our programs. It’s been beneficial for the entire community.” New City School, 5209 Waterman Blvd., St. Louis, 314-361-6411, newcityschool.org

INSIDE A CHARMING BRICK HOUSE TUCKED AWAY IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD IS A TREASURE TROVE OF FINE ANTIQUE FURNISHINGS, VINTAGE HOME DÉCOR AND GOODS TO CHERISH.
T
he new Kirkwood location of Fox & Hound Antiques has everything: Victorian and early Americana furniture; fine vintage European jewelry; spooky oddities, like Catholic kneelers and mourning wreaths made with woven hair; antique art, like a 40-by-50-inch Augustus Wall Callcott river landscape painting in a 19th-century frame; and a giant fullmounted stuffed wild boar named Lola. “She’s kind of our mascot,” co-owner Kelly Layton says. “She’s one of those pieces that are hard to let go of; she’s become a friend.” Adds co-owner Daniel Hobbs, “We put a high price on her to ensure she goes to a good home.” The pair run the second location of Fox & Hound, which opened in downtown Kirkwood at the end of July. Slightly off the beaten path across from the train station and behind Mosby Building Arts, the charming brick house, with its little front yard and rooftop deck, was the ideal spot to showcase Fox & Hound’s wares. “It lends itself to what we do, because we have antique furniture and vintage home décor – we’re a little quirky and a little different,” Layton says. “The fact that it looks like a house and has a historic vibe helps us set things up in a way for people to see what they can do in their own homes.”
Another plus of the new Kirkwood store is its centralized location, which makes both deliveries and commuting to their showrooms at Warson Woods Antique Gallery much easier. The taller ceilings and extra square footage in the Kirkwood loft also allow them to display larger items for customers and interior designer clients looking to complete more-extensive home renovations. “St. Charles is awesome for foot-traffic customers, but there are also a lot of tourists who come in looking for something smaller – not necessarily an 8-foot hutch to take on their Greyhound bus,” Hobbs says, laughing. “We wanted to be able to branch out to even more clientele.”
Layton, a longtime customer of Hobbs’, says the two always dreamed of opening a joint venture. When Hobbs saw the Kirkwood listing online, he knew it was perfect for Fox & Hound’s second location and jumped on the opportunity immediately. “It was one of those, ‘If you don’t do it now, you’re going to regret it’ situations,” Hobbs says. “The building was perfect, the area was perfect, and it just fit what we wanted to do.” The breadth of offerings blends Hobbs’ affinity for practical French, Victorian and early Americana pieces and his love of quirky oddities, like medical items and taxidermy (hey, Lola!), with Layton’s passion for fitting eras-inspired items, like Hollywood regency or midcentury modern, into a home. Most of the shop’s offerings are vintage or antique (classified as 20 years or older for the former, 100 years for the latter), plus a few newer pieces in pristine condition brought in by cosigners and small, gift-friendly lines, like the local Choteau Candle Company, Twig and Tarnish succulent plants in antique vintage objects and the Sacramento-based Seance fragrance line with scents including “Cemetery” and “Parlor Ghost.” Along with their local network of clients accumulated over the years, Hobbs and Layton source most of their items from out of state – usually during pit stops on cross-country furniture deliveries or after someone from a private estate or auction reaches out – and say the magic is in the randomness of discovery. “Today, for example, we went over to someone’s house to look at some furniture and ended up leaving with a huge set of 1920s sterling silver flatware in the art nouveau style,” Hobbs says. Hobbs and Layton are confident anyone who walks through the door will find something special. “In the antique business, it truly takes that special person to want an item,” Hobbs says. “I can have three Victorian fireplaces, and they all sell immediately; and then I’ll go and buy another one, and it’ll sit there forever. Even if I think it’s the most awesome item we’ve ever had, it’s going to take someone else to think that as well. We’ll hold onto it until we find that right person.” Big or small, flashy or discreet – whichever item you choose, Layton and Hobbs are sure to share your enthusiasm for found treasures. “I don’t want to sell something that, if I had to close shop tomorrow, I couldn’t take home and enjoy,” Hobbs says. Adds Layton, “We have to truly believe someone else is going to love it as much as we do.” On Oct. 13 to 15, Fox & Hound Antiques will have a large vendor space set up at the Vintage Market Days in Lake St. Louis, and on the afternoon of Nov. 4, they will participate in downtown Kirkwood’s Fall Wine Walk offering in-store deals and free wine samples. Stop by, say “hi” to Lola and see the magic for yourself. Crêpes from the Caribbean
Story and photos by Mabel Suen
I
n Chesterfield, a quaint corner storefront gives visitors a taste of France without needing to leave the country. French Crêperie debuted in May and features sweet and savory French crêpes concocted by Guadeloupe native Natacha Douglas. Douglas grew up in the French Caribbean, where she fondly recalls grabbing crêpes from casual carts and lovingly preparing them at home for her family. While living in the United States, she found that authentic versions of her favorite childhood treat were few and far between. By opening French Crêperie, she strives to create the ultimate French crêpe experience for her community. “For me, crêpes represent love,” Douglas says. “I’m somebody that has a really big heart, and I wanted to do something that makes people happy. I wanted to create a place where people can come have something comforting from a different culture, so it made sense for me to open a crêperie where I can share my love of crêpes.” Douglas’ background is in higher education, so building an environment of compassion and camaraderie comes naturally for her. As a graduate with an MBA and doctorate in health professions education, her role as the vice president of enrollment management at Logan University in Chesterfield keeps her busy most of the week. She dedicates the rest of her time to fostering a community gathering place centered on her favorite food. “I wanted people to walk in and feel like they were somewhere else,” Douglas says. Her 1,600-square-foot crêperie evokes the feeling of Paris with murals of the Eiffel Tower and a charming streetscape. Accordion music plays over the speakers and employees clad in matching aprons and red chef hats serve freshly prepared crêpes with a smile. “I made it as cute as I could, and having French in me, I do have that French style,” she says. Douglas and her staff whip up about 200

crêpes to order per day, made from a simple batter of flour, milk, egg and oil, with a gluten-free buckwheat option also available. The delicate pancakes are soft, thin and light but quite filling, Douglas notes. Each 16-inch crêpe is poured and spread over a griddle by hand, cooked until golden brown and embellished with guests’ choice of fillings and toppings from a preset menu. So far, the best-selling item from the 17 different menu options is the C’est Paris, a crêpe stuffed with Nutella and your choice of strawberries, bananas or both. La Vie En Rose is another popular pick with egg, mozzarella or Swiss cheese and your choice of ham, turkey, bacon or sausage, all drizzled with bechamel. Douglas got the recipe for the luscious cheese sauce from her mother and created her own gluten-free version. To drink, French Crêperie offers L’OR Coffee as well as hot chocolate, tea and soft drinks. “We had L’OR, which means gold in French, in Guadeloupe,” Douglas says. “It’s very delicate, classy and French.” She recommends trying it in a cup of drip coffee, an espresso or latte. Douglas, who is fluent not only in French and Creole, also hopes to incorporate elements of Creole culture like Mardi Gras specials into the menu someday. For now, she happily cooks her crêpes – which range from traditional options to fun flavors filled with the likes of barbecue, taco or pizza ingredients – for anyone willing to try
them. She also offers crêpe-making classes at the shop anytime she can. “I think the biggest thing I didn’t expect was all of the community support,” Douglas says. “It makes such a difference. People are so happy about the success of it, and my thing is to give back. I want to use this platform to keep up a happy, loving, caring environment. I can’t wait to do more.” French Crêperie is open Friday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ST. LOUIS THEATER STARTS OFF STRONG By Mark Bretz
N
ow that autumn has arrived in all its splendor, the 2023-24 theater season is fully underway on numerous stages across St. Louis. Here’s a sneak peek of shows lighting up local stages with a harvest of theatrical treasures to enjoy this fall. Upstream Theater opens its 2023-24 season with the United States premiere of “Bitter Fruit,” a drama by Argentinian playwright Hector Levy-Daniel. When Maria’s mother hires a maid, Maria is suspicious that their new employee may be spying on behalf of the workers employed in their factory. Director Philip Boehm translated the original story, which runs Oct. 13 to 29 at the Marcelle Theatre in Grand Center. St. Louis Actors’ Studio unveils its 16th season with the local premiere of “Dr. Ride’s American Beach House,” written by St. Louisborn Liza Birkenmeier. STLAS describes the drama as “an intimate snapshot of queer antiheroines. On the eve of Sally Ride’s historic space flight, four women with passionate opinions and no opportunities sit on a sweltering St. Louis rooftop, watching life pass them by.” Annamaria Pileggi, STLAS associate artistic director, directs the production, which runs Oct. 6 to 22 at the Gaslight Theater in the Central West End. New Jewish Theatre’s silver anniversary season continues when the company presents its third production of “The Immigrant,” from Oct. 12 to 29. The drama by Mark Harelik is about Harelik’s grandfather, who came to America in 1909 as part of the Galveston Project. Artistic director Rebekah Scallet makes her NJT directorial debut with the show at the Mirowitz Performing Arts Center at the Jewish Community Center. The Fabulous Fox Theatre, which will be adding productions at Stifel Theatre to its schedule beginning in January 2024, starts its 2023-24 Broadway season of touring presentations with “Beetlejuice,” which will be performed Oct. 10

to 22, followed by “Come From Away,” which will run Nov. 3 to 5. After that, “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical,” will run Nov. 14 to 26 in the city where Turner went to high school and later performed at the Club Imperial in North County. Stray Dog Theatre continues its 20th anniversary season with “Saturday Night Fever” from Oct. 5 to 28 at the Tower Grove Abbey in Tower Grove. Based on the smash 1977 movie, it features the music of The Bee Gees. Albion Theatre concludes its 2023 season with Anthony Horowitz’s only full-length play, “Mindgame,” from Oct. 20 through Nov. 5 at the Kranzberg Arts Center Black Box Theatre. The company notes that “nothing is as it seems” when a writer of ‘true-crime’ paperbacks seeks
an interview with a serial killer in an asylum for the criminally insane. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis continues its 2023-24 season with the one-man show, “Twisted Melodies,” written and performed by St. Louis native Kelvin Roston Jr. It’s the story of singer/composer Donny Hathaway and his battles with mental illness. “Twisted Melodies” runs Oct. 4 to 22 at the Catherine Berges Theatre at COCA in University City. “The Lion in Winter,” James Goldman’s historical drama, follows England’s King Henry II, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their sons amid their competing ambitions to rule a kingdom. It will be presented by The Midnight Company Oct. 5 to 21 at the .ZACK Theatre in Grand Center.

S
tep inside Maplewood-based Drawn Studio: a serene space where professional artists pass on their unique artistic insights through an array of classical and contemporary visual arts classes. “Drawn is offering something that I wish I had as an aspiring artist,” founder Ryan Greis says. “It’s like a lab to test out unique art classes.” Using his own unconventional artistic journey as inspiration, Greis opened the nontraditional art education studio in Maplewood this summer to support other artists’ exploration. “I didn’t go to a formal art school,” he shares. “Instead, my learning took decades of devouring art books, filling my sketchbooks with drawings and notes I captured at art museums and studying the works of renowned artists across various disciplines and time periods.” Greis went on to spend more than 10 years as a professional illustrator for magazines and newspapers across the U.S., such as Cincinnati CityBeat in his hometown and The Riverfront Times in St. Louis, where he relocated in 2001. Today, students at Drawn Studio have the opportunity to learn drawing fundamentals and advanced techniques from Greis himself, who won Association of Alternative Newsmedia awards consecutively from 2000 to 2004. “The way I teach at Drawn Studio is a direct reflection of my unique learning journey,” Greis explains, adding that his teaching philosophy is built upon flexibility, creativity and a deep appreciation for individuality. “I recognize that each student may have their own distinct artistic journey, and I strive to nurture their passions and talents accordingly.” The studio offers two core curriculum classes: Drawing the Head and Face and Drawing the Figure. Sessions for teens and adults of all skill levels are designed to fit into busy schedules and run for three to five weeks, with small class sizes conducive for learning and obtaining feedback, Greis says: “What I’m doing is helping my students unlearn a lot of what they bring into the class and reposition how they view what they’re drawing.” Other offerings include Morning Mugs, a three-week course focused on drawing three different portraits of live models, and Mornings at the
Museum, which takes artists on a tour of the Saint Louis Art Museum, followed by a one-hour drawing session. Additionally, H2D (Hard to Draw) is a workshop covering parts of the human body, like hands, that are typically difficult to draw. Drawn Studio is open to any current or aspiring art instructors who are looking to teach in a nontraditional space with the freedom to create their own curriculum, pricing and schedule. The studio can play host to classes, meetings, photoshoots, workshops and events. “This gives practicing artists an opportunity to, in an inexpensive way, come in and rent the space to teach classes, and along the way, they’re building out their curriculum … acquiring their own student base … and promoting themselves,” Greis explains. “It’s a way to reach out to the art community and allow them to earn extra money teaching something that they’re really good at doing themselves.” Teachers aren’t the only ones benefitting from Drawn’s unique learning environment. “Greis is the kind of art professor that I’ve always wanted,” says Drawn art student Braden Downs. “He’s kind and encouraging, organized and passionate, and truly breaks down everything step-by-step.” Downs adds that Greis’ own work is mesmerizing and inspiring: “It’s been ages since I’ve seen art that made me want to pick up a pencil or brush. Art was always my escape, my happy place, my nirvana. It feels as if there’s a possibility that art may feel that way for me again.” Among the studio’s next courses, Intro to Drawing the Head and Face for adults will be offered on Wednesday evenings from Nov. 29 to Dec. 13 for $124. With only six spots available, interested students are encouraged to enroll early. Drawn Studio is a testament that the journey of artistry is as valuable as the destination, Greis says. “By sharing my experiences and insights as an artist with my students, I hope to inspire and empower them to follow their own artistic paths and reach their full creative potential.” Drawn Studio, 2523 S. READY READERS
FUN FOLIAGE F By Sheila Oliveri
all is a special time for children, with magic happening all around. Nature’s changes spark curiosity in young ones, turning a typical neighborhood walk into a collector’s dream: Leafy treasures flutter in the breeze and sail downward with twists and turns, settling in scattered piles at children’s feet. Ready Readers recommends two books to read with young explorers: “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt” and “If You Find a Leaf.” Before taking a walk with your budding botanist, share “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt,” in which author Steve Metzger and illustrator Miki Sakamoto bring math and science
to life with their ode to trees. Metzger’s familiar rhythm and repeating rhymes invite children to join in the reading, and Sakamoto’s pictures appeal to a wide range of readers. Young math and science enthusiasts will welcome the opportunity to identify, sort and match leaves of different shapes and sizes from various trees. Grown-up readers may recall their own fascination with identifying leaves in autumn, looking skyward to remember the trees they first adored as children. This story encourages collection, exploration and categorization fun for kids and adults alike. Upon returning home with a cache of fallen foliage, enjoy reading “If You Find a Leaf,” Aimée Sicuro’s first book as both the author and illustrator. Sicuro’s mixed media collages use real leaves in fanciful ways: creating sails for boats, soaring hot air balloons, horns to blow and crowns to wear with your head held high. Sort through your collected leaves, gently gliding a fingertip over both sides of the fallen gems.
