Accompanied by some stunning handpainted porcelain, master artist Marianna Steigervald of Hungary’s 192-year-old Herend will visit Chesterfield Jewelers late this month, as LN digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter relates in this story.

Arts & Culture:

DINNER & A SHOW Tuna prime rib, deviled crab fritters and other delights await LN readers in writer/photographer Mabel Suen’s intro to Yellowbelly, which Travis Howard and Tim Wiggins opened just last month in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood.

On the cover 10 M1 Bank is a national brand designed to foster and strengthen local stewardship through a commitment to reinvest up to 10 percent of its earnings back into the local community and foundations. “That’s the power of purpose,” says Ken Poteet, M1 Bank’s chairman, founder and CEO. “That’s banking on a mission.” Turn to page 10 to learn all about this “bank on a mission.” Pictured: Ken Poteet deeds the property title for 501 N. Hills Dr. to Brian Owens, founder of local nonprofit LIFE Arts. The organization will open a brand-new campus on the site, which will include M1 for Life Academy of the Arts, a theater, a cultural arts center and a tech innovation space. Photo by Sarah Conroy.

EDITOR ‌FOR

ME, HALLOWEEN WAS NEVER ABOUT THE COSTUMES.

Instead, it was all about the candy apples, chocolate and ... did I mention chocolate? Although I’ve since learned to manage my severe sweet tooth, I always give in to temptation this time of year with a classic caramel apple. Luckily enough, the creators of such traditional treats seem to have as much fun creating them as I do enjoying them. Ladue News staff writer and copy editor Bryan A. Hollerbach talks to three of the metro area’s finest confectionaries about how they’re bracing for the upcoming Halloween holiday and hungry trick-or-treaters of all ages. Starting on p. 69, we hope you enjoy learning about the seasonal favorites at Bissinger’s, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate and Merb’s Candies, and how these confectionaries prepare for the spook-tacular season. Also in this week’s edition, we hope you enjoy learning more about the history of Herend – a Hungary-based business that specializes in intricately hand-painted porcelain creations. Starting on p. 28, staff writer and digital content editor Robyn Dexter shares the history of Herend and also the details in regard to master artist Marianna Steigervald visiting Chesterfield Jewelers to showcase some of the company’s highly coveted porcelain goods. All the best,

“E

verybody has the same playbook,” declares Ken Poteet, chairman, CEO and founder of M1 Bank. “But not everybody has the same culture. The culture, and the relationships that form because of it, are what drive and maintain success.” After leaving Sterling Bank, which he founded in 2004, Poteet determined that he simply “wasn’t finished.” Although Sterling Bank enjoyed incredible success under his leadership, Poteet left wanting to establish a new, independent bank that would more fully realize his original ambitions. “This time, I wanted to create a bank that would be more mission- and purpose-driven,” he shares. Nearly two years later, Poteet is accomplishing just that with M1 Bank. Formed earlier this year, M1 Bank offers clients, who range from businesses to individuals and families, a personalized and boutique banking experience. “We’re relationshipfocused,” states Poteet. “We really know the people we serve, and not just from a transactional standpoint. When a particular client has a need, we understand their background and financial situation, and are able to have a dialogue about how to accomplish their goals.” That attentiveness fuels M1 Bank’s work on both national and local levels. The bank boasts a particular specialty in affordable housing and renewable energy, two sectors in which Poteet is highly experienced. During his three-plus decades in the industry, he has partnered with developers and syndicators to finance projects worth more than $3 billion across 30 states. Poteet believes that fostering relationships and meeting financial needs on a national scale empowers M1 Bank to be a stronger steward of the local community. He, along with a team that includes wife Stephanie Bahn-Poteet and

sons Corey Poteet and McLane Poteet, envisions M1 Bank as a “bank on a mission.” That mission involves a deep investment in St. Louis and includes a commitment to reinvest 10 percent of its profits back into the community. M1 Bank is already an active supporter of various charities and nonprofit organizations around the area. In August, the bank sponsored Laura’s Run 4 Kids, an event benefiting The Little Bit Foundation, which partners with schools to promote positive change amongst children living in poverty. And in November, M1 Bank will serve as a sponsor for the Top Pantry Chef cook-off, whose proceeds will fund the Jewish Family and Children’s Service’s Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. In addition, the Poteets are also longtime advocates for The Kaufman Fund, a volunteer-run nonprofit that assists St. Louis-area veterans. More than a decade ago, Poteet was introduced by his wife to Brian Owens, a Ferguson-born musician and performer. After the events that rocked his hometown in 2014, Owens launched LIFE Arts, a nonprofit organization that gives youth a platform to express themselves and build confidence through music and mentorship. Without a permanent space, Owens partnered with local arts and educational institutions like Maryville University, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and The Sheldon to run its music, performance and songwriting programs. All that changed, however, when Bahn-Poteet came across a church for sale in the city. She knew that Owens was itching to open his own campus and thought the church would be an ideal fit. “So, we decided to buy the

church for him,” she explains. In early September, she and her husband stood outside that church on 501 N. Hills Dr. and deeded the property title to Owens, on behalf of LIFE Arts. Once open, the new facility will become known as the M1 for Life Academy of the Arts. The campus will include a theater, a cultural arts center and a tech innovation space. There are more exciting beginnings on the horizon for M1 Bank, as well. On Sept. 24, the bank debuted a brand-new branch in Clayton and will celebrate its official grand opening on Oct. 16. Another branch in Des Peres is slated to open this winter. And finally, the bank has a contract in place to renovate and redevelop a site in downtown Clayton that will eventually become the M1 Bank headquarters. In the meantime, customers who do business with M1 Bank know that they’re not dealing with a cookie-cutter bank. “The customers who have a relationship with us know that their dollars and what they’re investing in is part of a mission, a purpose,” adds Poteet. “Our clients understand the power of a culture driven by mission and purpose.” “There aren’t many businesses that are completely transparent – that you know the purpose behind everything that they do,” shares Poteet. Thankfully for clients, and for the St. Louis community, M1 Bank is such an institution. M1 Bank, various locations, 314-721-2265, m1bank.net

LANDSCAPE

Nightmares in the

Garden By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

L

ate October: a time for vampires and folks toting sharp-edged implements of destruction. “Um, Halloween?” you may ask yourself. Not quite. I’m actually referring to October gardening chores, not Count Dracula, Michael Myers or Leatherface. Some of our worst “bloodsuckers,” non-Bela Lugosi division, are bush honeysuckle and Bradford pear trees. Take the former, for instance. Because bush honeysuckle holds its leaves two to three weeks longer than other woody plants, it becomes very easy to identify at this time of year. Area gardeners likely recognize the urgency of removing bush honeysuckle from gardens. It destroys the soil for native plants, prevents regrowth of forest cover, can cause soil erosion and can provide dangerous cover for deer and, with them, deer ticks – and tick-borne illnesses. Also, songbirds can starve from eating bush honeysuckle’s attractive but nutrient-poor red fruit. So sharpen your ax or lube the chain saw, and let’s get going! Some loyal readers have already eradicated this menace from local landscapes and are to be applauded for their efforts. Many have even volunteered for honeysuckle removal in area parks, schools and churches – hats off to them, too! However, a quick, recent drive through Ladue showed the job remains nowhere near finished. As long as a single fruiting bush remains, all areas nearby likely will be recolonized by bird-spread seeds. This summer, amusingly, the Missouri Invasive Plant Task Force staged a mock trial of bush honeysuckle in St. Louis’ Old Courthouse, the short PBS video of which appears at moinvasives.org/2018/08/29/honeysuckletrial-in-st-louis. That fun, clear and knowledgeable

26

OCTOBER 19, 2018 | LadueNews.com

video would make a lovely educational piece for schools, neighbors and grandchildren – please watch it and then share it with those who need more awareness of this issue. An awful environmental catastrophe besides bush honeysuckle is bursting forth as the beautiful Bradford pear goes rogue. Thought to be sterile, this wonder tree was once planted heavily in the western suburbs and has now cross-pollinated with other Callery pears – and gone feral. Early next spring, just drive to Interstate 64, then south on Route 141 to see how serious that cross-pollination has become. To prevent it from further advancing locally, learn to spot pear seedlings and work to remove them before they spread as widely as bush honeysuckle has. For a fuller backstory, The Washington Post recently

published a (firewalled) article titled “Scientists thought they had created the perfect tree. But it became a nightmare.” Happily enough, a fast Google search should take interested readers to a nonfirewalled version of that piece. In any event, once you’ve prudently exercised on seeding pears and mature bush honeysuckle whatever (hopefully) few inner ax-murderer tendencies you may have been fostering, treat fresh stumps with a concentrated glyphosate-based herbicide like Monsanto’s Roundup while taking pains to wear gloves. Then heavily mulch the newly bare areas. After that, spend your winter feeling virtuous, and reading up on exciting new trees and shrubs to fill this reclaimed garden space next spring.

A master artist from Herend will visit Chesterfield Jewelers later this month to showcase the company’s highly coveted porcelain goods.

F

or close to 200 years, Herend has wowed the world with its handmade, hand-painted porcelain creations. Founded in Herend, Hungary, in 1826, the company has grown to become the largest producer of handmade porcelain in the world. Each piece’s signature patterns and attention to detail set the Herend brand apart and have made its longstanding line of goods coveted for decades. To give Herend fans an exclusive look into the work that goes into these exquisite pieces, Chesterfield Jewelers is bringing in Herend master artist Marianna Steigervald for an event series on Oct. 29 and 30. Steigervald grew up in the Hungarian village of Veszprém, which borders the Herend Porcelain Manufactory. She showed an affinity for art at a Marianna Steigervald young age and sought to advance her education at the Herend manufactory after finishing school. Herend’s master artist curriculum consists of rigorous training, which Steigervald completed, earning the title of master artist in 1997. According to a press release, to achieve this title an artist “must excel in designing a form and its ornamentation; designing its manufacturing process; choosing, preparing and using the raw and auxiliary materials, as well as the tools and instruments necessary to make the piece; improving product quality and eliminating all errors; teaching the craft and providing expert opinion and consultation; and exhibiting the highest professional and aesthetic standards.” For a master artist’s final project, he or she must create a masterpiece for review by the Guild Masters. If the piece is done to the Guild Masters’ standards, the artist is awarded this rare designation. “In this fast-paced society we live in where many things are created for a short shelf life, I love creating beautiful things that have a permanence to them,” Steigervald says of her work. “Not only valuable products that will be around for generations to come, but also pieces that are a true expression of art. As an artist, I love to honor tradition, but I also enjoy pushing boundaries and discovering ways to appeal to a younger generation. It may be a cliché, but I continuously search to capture and reflect the subtle beauty in the world around me.” At the Oct. 29 and 30 events at Chesterfield Jewelers, visitors will have the opportunity to witness Steigervald demonstrate her craft while browsing the store’s selection of Herend products. Steigervald will also be available to personalize and sign pieces for attendees, which make great gifts. Beth Castellaw, a regional sales manager for Herend USA, says customers often request messages like “Merry Christmas” or other personalized sentiments on the bottom of their Herend pieces, making them even more special and unique. “Mariana truly enjoys meeting customers and children, and has built a loyal U.S. following,” Castellaw says. “At one event, she even tried to teach a small child how to paint. We’d love for

people to come and meet her and witness her remarkable painting techniques.” Herend figurines are distinguishable by their hand-painted fishnet pattern, which has become a signature Herend design. Castellaw says that in 1858, an inspired artist modified a fish scale design into a fishnet pattern and painted it onto the breast of a rooster figurine to imitate feathers. In the 1960s, an animal figurine was painted entirely in the fishnet pattern, and it became so popular that it became widely used on Herend figurines, with animal figurines featuring the design representing about half of Herend’s U.S. sales. While figurines remain popular for Herend, the brand’s dinnerware line is also widely in demand. With thousands of shapes in more than 5,000 different patterns, the combinations are endless. Herend includes platters, coffee and tea services, trays, napkin rings and more and has been owned by more than 25 royal families worldwide. “Many Reserve Collection pieces will be among the exquisite assortment of porcelain artistry presented at the event,” Castellaw says. “Mostly limited editions, the Reserve Collection pieces are art sculptures adorned with 24-karat gold accents and are meticulously handcrafted by many pairs of hands and take many hours, days and weeks to paint. Each piece is elegantly presented When: with a certificate and a luxury case.” Oct. 29, 3 to 7 p.m., and A lookbook Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring some of the unique Herend items Where: available at Chesterfield Chesterfield Jewelers, Jewelers can be found on 17037 Baxter Road, the jewelers’ website. Castellaw Chesterfield encourages those who can attend the events to do so, but notes that the items will also be available for “preshopping” on the site. Steigervald says she’s looking forward to the event series and is eager to share her art with those who attend. “For me, the Herend brand is synonymous with perfection in high-quality porcelain,” she says. “The manufactory’s success story has been unbroken since the 19th century, in large part due to cherishing old traditions while embracing new artistic endeavors and technical advancements, as well. Herend’s hand-painted porcelain, whether a small figurine, a piece of giftware or a dinner service for 20, is a beautiful work of art.”

BEAUTY BUZZ

Easy Halloween Makeup Ideas

‌W

ith Halloween fast approaching, the time has come to start brainstorming emergency costume ideas for both your kids and yourself, in case local boo-tiques sell out of options – or at least cool ones. If that happens, get creative by digging through your cosmetics to see what you can devise on your own. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with your child or just passing out goodies at home, get into the celebration’s “spirited” spirit by using a bit of makeup to realize one of these three spooktacular ideas: Elsa from Walt Disney Pictures’ 2013 Frozen. Achieving this popular look for children and adults takes just a few easy steps and requires only purple eyeshadow, bright pink lipstick and a braided blond wig (if, that is, your child or you lack Elsa’s blond locks). First, create a soft purple, smoky eye with eyeshadow to mimic the look of Elsa’s own. (If you want to get fancy, add a pair of fake lashes to make your eyes “pop” even more.) Then apply Elsa’s signature bright pink lip. Finally, as the most important part, fashion or don the blond side-braided do. Once you add a blue dress, everyone should recognize you as the ice queen from this cinematic mega-blockbuster.

Harley Quinn from Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2016 Suicide Squad. Quite popular among young adults this year, this look also requires little effort to achieve. Use a very light foundation to make your face as pale as possible. (Alternatively, use white face paint, if you prefer, to whiten your skin like Harley’s.) Then, set your face with a translucent setting powder so the foundation or face paint doesn’t budge. Next, using red and blue eyeshadow, create a very blownout red smoky look on one eye, and on the other, create a blue smoky look. (Because Harley’s eye makeup is dragged down her face, incidentally, you can be as messy as you want here.) Last but not least, add red lipstick to complete the look. You can also use black eyeliner to draw a small black heart under one eye and write “ROTTEN” under

By Kimmie Gotch

your cheekbone to copy the character’s exact look. Once you’ve put your hair in pigtails, you’ll have twinned Harley Quinn. Walt Disney’s timeless Minnie Mouse. One of the easiest Halloween improvisations to create? Mickey’s iconic gal-pal, Minnie Mouse. You need only buy or make Minnie ears with a red-and-white polka-dot bow. Then, draw a circle on your nose with black eyeliner, add Minnie’s classic red lip – et voilà, you’ve well and truly “trapped” Ms. Mouse! Halloween abounds with fun and easy last-minute looks requiring little effort to achieve. So if you’re still seeking a costume idea as Oct. 31 draws closer and closer and CLOSER, like a cloak-wearing gent with hypnotic eyes and a thirsty look, try one of the three ideas described above!

Robert “Beatle Bob”

MATONIS

R

By Paul Brown

obert “Beatle Bob” Matonis will tell you he’s a happy person. If you don’t believe him or think he’s a bit strange, then he’ll tell you that’s your problem, not his. Young Matonis, now d.b.a. Beatle Bob, was born in south St. Louis 60-odd years ago and has spent the better part of his life listening to and loving rock ’n’ roll. It’s hard to pin a label on him, though super fan, groupie, eccentric music enthusiast and obsessive concertgoer all seem to fit. If you’ve ever been to a live music event in St. Louis, particularly for an obscure or up-and-coming act, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Beatle Bob. He claims to have attended at least one live music performance every single day since Christmas Eve 1996. If you’ve never seen the man, you’d still recognize him right away. He can usually be found wearing an early-1960s-style jacket and pants, his hair cut into a Beatles mop top straight out of 1964, and he’ll be near or maybe even on a stage, dancing in his unique way. “Dance to the beat of your own drummer – don’t worry how you look,” Beatle Bob says. “If people are judging you, then I don’t know what to say. … If people come up and talk with me [at a concert], which many do, they find out I’m just an everyday person who is obviously excited about rock ’n’ roll and a person who feels the electricity from live bands and wants to plug in to it. It’s just who I am.” Beatle Bob’s dad was a mapmaker for the Army who liked Pat Boone music, and he remembers his mom listening to early rock ’n’ roll on long-since-defunct local AM radio station KXOK. However, it was another relative entirely who introduced him to live music. An uncle of the young Matonis took him to a small club in Hermann in 1960 to see Jerry Lee Lewis; a year later, they saw Ike and Tina Turner play at Club Imperial in north St. Louis. Young Matonis’ first major concert was in 1964, when he saw Chuck Berry open for the Dave Clark Five at the long-since-razed St. Louis Arena (later known as the Checkerdome, of course). But the day that changed his life didn’t come until August 21, 1966 – the day the Beatles played at Busch Stadium II. Beatle Bob remembers the day clearly. “It was a Sunday,” he says. “It was drizzling rain. It was the first time they’d ever been to St. Louis. The people were just in glorious exclamation to go to that show.” The stage was on top of second base, and no fans were on the field. Young Matonis watched from the sixth row on the first base side. His older self remembers the audio being bad because stadium concerts were so rare, and the speakers weren’t nearly powerful enough. “If it had been any other group, I would have said it’s a terrible show, but because of the power of Beatlemania, you didn’t care,” he recalls. So young Matonis grew his hair and started dressing like the Fab Four, just as a lot of kids did during the ’60s. According to Beatle Bob, he then graduated from Southwest High in 1971, went to college at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Saint Louis University, and has been a social worker for the last 35 years. He’s also contributed to several music publications, supposedly – perhaps most notably the storied local print zine Jet Lag and, most recently, the online OnStL. Unlike many of the rockers he’s idolized, Beatle Bob doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs. He never had kids and never married. He says he’s just never found the right girl for him. “With my lifestyle, you really have to be dedicated,” he says. “And to be married, ‘for better or worse,’ it’s a high-pressure job.”

Dance to the beat of your own drummer – don’t worry how you look – BEATLE BOB Every night, Beatle Bob’s at a show and always dancing. “I don’t have a secret,” he confesses. “You just have to find out what you like in life, seek it out and don’t be swayed by people who might not be right for you.” Philosophically, he continues: “Don’t be categorized. You have to be yourself. You may seem strange to some people, but just find out what you want to do in life and enjoy it to the max.” And most important, Beatle Bob adds, “Be happy.” If you think that’s strange, well, that’s your problem, not his.

Hyken’s HOMEWORK Boys and #MeToo

INDEPENDENT • COEDUCATIONAL • GRADES 7-12

Open House By Dr. Russell Hyken

A

ll parents worry about their kids, but the #MeToo movement highlights another area of concern. My wife and I have two teenage boys. The thought of one being accused of harassing anybody, male or female, or being harassed takes our parental angst to a new level. With seeing stories almost daily about lives being ruined by sexual harassment, character education is more important now than ever before. As parents, we want to teach our children to be compassionate and sensitive. Unfortunately, gender role stereotypes are often perpetuated from a young age: Pink is for girls, and blue is for boys; dolls are feminine and trucks are masculine; and worst of all, emotions are girly and toughness is manly. Unfortunately, when children are taught to suppress their feelings, they can grow up insensitive to the needs of others and are prone to outbursts because they are unable to express their feelings. It is never too early to discuss how to be kind. Young children soak up the world around them, including the attitudes and behaviors of adults. Talking to your children about treating others with respect provides a foundation for healthy friendships with those others, regardless of gender or sex. By the time a child enters middle school, many young males have a strong opinion about how to treat young females. Unfortunately, some of their thoughts are misguided. Influenced by mass media and their peers, some preteens believe it is “cool” to objectify women and make sexually harassing or gender demeaning comments. Continual education and regular discussions are needed to influence boys (and girls alike) to do the right thing, especially as they mature into the adolescent years. Keeping the conversation alive, however, is a challenging task. Most adolescents are more concerned with texting peers than talking with parents. Mom and dad are, however, critical components of raising compassionate, empathic individuals. Use the dinner table and car rides to discuss the latest news. Ask your kids what they think and how they can avoid being either a perpetrator or a victim. Last and most important, be a good role model, especially dads. Men set the tone for boys. Masculinity is not about protecting the opposite sex and thumping one’s chest; it is about defending the vulnerable and being kind to all. So don’t just hold the door open for women – hold the door open for everyone. The #MeToo movement is about stopping sexual assault and creating long-term systemic change. All genders should stand up for what is right. Together we can build a culture of respect; healthy relationships are one of the keys to life’s happiness.

The #MeToo movement is about stopping sexual assault and creating long-term systemic change.

M

any words have been scribed in these pages to implore readers to see driving not as a chore but as something that can bring joy. I’ve tested sports cars, sedans, electric cars, even SUVs and station wagons, which have all provided thrills of their own. As dissimilar as they’ve been, the one characteristic all share is they do their best work on a nicely paved stretch of tarmac. Any surfaces with holes, bumps or dirt have been avoided, meaning there’s a whole world left to explore. That’s not to say I’ve never experienced the fun of offroading; it’s just that doing so has always been with ATVs of some sort. In Jefferson County, where I reside, lifted pickups that require a stepladder for entry are the status symbol du jour. My experience in pickups or Jeeps that have been modified for off-road capability, though, has been less than enjoyable. Brutish and uncomfortable, they typically deafen passengers with tire noise on the highway and ride like a beatup lumber wagon. For all its tales of off-road prowess, the 2018 Ford Raptor is a factory-built vehicle. Certainly it can’t be as abusive to passengers as those modified monstrosities, or else who would buy it? When first you come face to face with the Raptor, its physical size is intimidating. At 6½ feet tall and more than 7 feet wide, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room in a parking space. On smaller cars, the federally mandated backup camera and myriad obstacle sensors can seem like wasted expense, but not so with the Raptor. They’re essential – and much preferable to the alternative of listening for a car being crushed behind you. Interior accoutrements are a pleasing, if distinctly Ford, approximation of luxury. There’s a nice mix of heated and cooled leather seats, glossy carbon-fiber and brushedaluminum trim, and soft-touch textured plastics. Although the Raptor’s certainly not on par with a German sedan, I doubt tricking passengers into thinking they’re in such a sedan is the point. Elsewhere inside, the Raptor is full of all the latest bits: lane assist, blind spot-monitoring radar, active cruise control and one of the better stereo systems I’ve listened to at any price thanks to B&O PLAY. Infotainment is routed through a crisp, clear 8-inch screen. One complaint is the clarity of the backup camera and 360-degree camera views – especially where these views are so critical. Looking at the knobby BFGoodrich tires, complete with off-road purposefully bead-lock capable wheels, one might expect a rough ride replete with road noise. But all the pieces work together incredibly well, so that isn’t the case. But the 3-inch-tube external-reservoir Fox Racing Shox were developed specifically for the Raptor. At 70 mph, the 10-speed transmission keeps things spinning barely above idle. Put it all together, and inside the plush cabin, occupants are treated to a pleasant experience. About those capabilities: There are many. Perhaps the most controversial component found in

the Raptor is its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine, not some massive V-8 or a lumbering diesel. Plucked from Ford’s GT supercar, this motor in the Raptor produces 450 horsepower with 510 foot-pound of torque, good enough for a fivesecond 0-to-60 sprint. And despite the bar stool seating height, engaging the sport button stiffens the suspension to where body roll is kept in check. Those knobby tires even provide a surprising amount of lateral grip in twisties. Just as the interior provides a reasonable approximation of luxury, the Raptor’s power and handling provide a reasonable approximation of a sporty car. Color me surprised. As surprisingly pleasant as the Raptor’s on-road manners are, it’s what happens when the asphalt ends that gives it a purpose for existence. On my first day of driving, my head was on a swivel looking for an unpaved playground. For the most part, I struck out, but the few short stretches of bumpy stuff I found made me want more. The Raptor almost feels even more composed, more in its element, with some imperfections under its rubber. On the next day, I hit pay dirt (or gravel in this case): a miles-long complex of rough gravel roads near Pacific. Here I tested the different off-road driving modes of Mud/ Sand, Rock and Baja. Without getting too into the weeds, pun intended, each of these modes results in its own combination of chassis, suspension and steering settings. For this day, Mud/Sand and Baja were best, Baja being the far more aggressive setting. Once acclimated to the conditions, speeds started creeping upward, regardless of the footing underneath. The Raptor simply didn’t care; it devoured whatever came. There’s a big difference between being able to do something and doing it with aplomb. That’s essentially the point of every review you’ll read here: critiquing the details of how they do what they do. And the Raptor did the rough stuff so well, it inspired so much confidence in doing so, that it lit a fire under me personally. I’d like to take one to the off-road park in Sullivan, in Washington County, Missouri – high speed over sand dunes sounds amazing. I can even imagine a Utah vacation planned around going places with the Raptor. This is a vehicle that is changing how I think about vehicles, and that’s no hyperbole. I admit, I have a sweet gig here choosing what I want to drive. I’ve been lucky to get to know some pretty incredible machines. In fact, after nearly every drive, I entertain the thought of owning whatever it is. However, that thought usually fades upon further reflection. Although the Raptor experience is still fresh in my mind, I feel this thought of ownership will cling to my psyche. It opens up the possibility of enjoying the previously unreachable 98 percent of the world. LOANER FROM: Sunset Ford | sunsetfordstlouis.com

ust last month, St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood welcomed Yellowbelly, which showcases island-inspired cuisine and rumforward beverages. The restaurant and bar – dubbed a “sea and spirits concept” – comes from the team behind that neighborhood’s Retreat Gastropub and On Point Hospitality: co-owners Travis Howard and Tim Wiggins, who also serves as bar manager. The duo brought on Richard Blais, a Top Chef All-Stars winner and James Beard Award nominee, to develop the food menu. Blais focuses on creative, skillful preparations of seafood, with a touch of his trademark molecular gastronomy style. Yellowbelly fills a 3,000-square-foot corner space with seats for 90 to 95 in the dining room and

I’m excited to bring our knowledge of seafood to St. Louis and really work with the local ingredients to see how we can pair seafood from around the coast to what’s grown in the Midwest.” Highlights from the initial menu include the Tuna Prime Rib, a 40-ounce yellowtail tuna loin that has been meat-glued and wrapped in caul fat to a tomahawk beef bone, served with sautéed greens. Another homage to coastal food is a double cheeseburger inspired by Irvine, California’s In-N-Out Burger; the upscale take features a pair of 4-ounce dry-aged beef patties and Thousand Island dressing, getting a unique tropical twist from a side of the establishment’s Macar-Uni Salad. “Richard brings a bit of playfulness to the menu,”

Wiggins’ rum-focused cocktail program features drinks including Hopes & Dreams with Jamaican rum and rhum agricole, amaro, mango, soy sauce, and carrot and lime juices. ‌Story:  It’s springtime, and S Mart employee Ash has selected an ideal location for some off-campus high jinks. It’s a desolate cabin in the woods, hard to access and far removed from any bothersome neighbors. So what could go wrong, right? Ash is joined on spring break by his girlfriend (and S Mart colleague), Linda; pesky sister, Cheryl; wisecracking best friend, Scott; and Scott’s new-found, trampy squeeze, Shelly, for a raucous romp in the hinterlands. Unfortunately for Ash and company, the rundown cabin is where a professor has hidden a book that can summon nasty “Candarian” demons with a penchant for wrecking a good time. Pretty soon, “possession” is nine-tenths of the law in the woods, and Ash finds himself battling his demonized friends, sawing off heads and limbs with copious flowing of blood as an unfortunate consequence. All may not be lost, though. Annie, intrepid daughter of the missing professor, shows up with her timid boyfriend, Ed, and a dimwitted local resident, Jake, in hopes of finding that deadly book and restoring order. A long shot, perhaps, but still hope for the desperate Ash amid the zombie ruins. Highlights:  Those Candarian devils are back for a third visit to Tower Grove Abbey in a sidesplitting (and more), broad comedy guaranteed to give its fun-loving patrons a bloody good time, especially if they venture into the “Splatter Zone” up front. Overacting is a plus here, and director Justin Been gets his enthusiastic cast to go over the top and never look back. Other Info:  Stray Dog Theatre unleashed its original version of this goofy musical in 2010 with big box-office results. It was such a hit that artistic director Gary Bell and associate artistic director Justin Been returned in 2013 to the blood-soaked scene of the comedy crimes with a four-week engagement. Just in time for Halloween, Been and his stalwart performers rev up their arched engines for another go at this campy musical inspired by the 1981 flick The Evil Dead and its sequels. Evil Dead: The Musical has been a fan favorite since it debuted in 2003 in the back room of a small Toronto bar. It features a book and lyrics by George Reinblatt, music by Frank Cipolla, Christopher Bond, Melissa Morris and Reinblatt, with music supervision by Cipolla, extra lyrics by Bond and additional music by Rob Daleman. The third time through the blood-splattered cabin and creeping woods by Stray Dog seems overly familiar by now to those of us no longer wildly captivated by the onstage silliness. Still, Been has the good sense to infuse this incarnation (sorry) with fresh faces who are all too eager to chew up the scenery as vapid, carnivorous creatures of the night. Lurking in the sinister shadows of the woods behind the cabin at stage rear is the unseen band, which gives

a boisterous reading of such endearing classics as the amusing “Housewares Employee” ballad sung by Ash and Linda, the earnest “Good Old Reliable Jake” performed by Jake, Annie and Ed or the gyrating “Do the Necronomicon” danced artfully by the “deadites.” Hamming it up with ghoulish gusto are Riley Dunn as fearless leader Ash, who survives hand-to-throat combat with his own disembodied right hand. Dawn Schmid is convincing as Ash’s dutiful lover, Linda, who reveals her bad-girl side after becoming infested with demons, and Jennelle Gilreath is a hoot as the sexy but brain-challenged Shelly. Christen Ringhausen is a manic mass of energy as Ash’s fast-talking, basically incomprehensible sister, Cheryl, especially after she takes a walk on the wild side in the cellar. Stephen Henley is humorous as the testosterone-driven Scott, while Kevin O’Brien makes for a fine and studied Professor Knowby, who finds the book that unleashes those darned demons. Completing the wacky cast are Maria Bartolotta as the professor’s take-charge daughter, Annie, who storms through the cabin with reckless abandon, leaving her downtrodden boyfriend, Ed, in the unfortunate lurch. The latter is portrayed in fine tentative fashion by Corey Fraine, while Josh Douglas provides the voice of a hapless moose head, as well as garnering considerable laughs as hillbilly Jake. Having seen Evil Dead: The Musical four times now, I am more than happy to have escaped Tower Grove Abbey with nary a bloodstain, in contrast to the dozens of Splatter Zone patrons who reveled in the openingnight, make-believe carnage. Evil Dead: The Musical just won’t die a natural death, just the way its fans like it.

‌Fri., Oct. 19, to Sat., Dec. 15 Philip Slein Gallery presents “BLONDIE BUBBA: NEW PAINTINGS BY JAMIE ADAMS” at that St. Louis gallery. The exhibition title references Adams’ father – both his father’s youth (wavy blond hair) and his old age (“Bubba” being what his grandchildren call him). Adams effortlessly (it seems) depicts the past and present existing simultaneously. His classically rendered figures add to the effect. Likewise, his figures frequently combine people, sometimes appearing androgynous as a result. Gallery hours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Free. philipsleingallery.com.

The St. Louis Jewish Book Festival presents writer, activist and CNN political commentator SALLY KOHN. In The Opposite of Hate, she talks to leading scientists and researchers, investigating the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how simple incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She travels to Rwanda, to the Middle East and across the United States, introducing us to terrorists, white supremacists and even some of her own Twitter trolls, drawing surprising lessons from these dramatic examples, including inspiring stories of those who left hate behind. As Kohn boldly confronts her own shameful moments, whether it’s the girl she bullied as a child or her own deep partisan resentment, she points the way toward change. 7 p.m. $20. jccstl.com.

The St. Louis County Library Foundation is pleased to present acclaimed novelist B.A. SHAPIRO for a discussion and signing of her latest novel, The Collector’s Apprentice, at the library’s Ladue headquarters. It’s the summer of 1922, and 19-year-old Paulien Mertens finds herself in Paris – broke, disowned and completely alone. Everyone in Belgium, including her own family, believes she stole millions in a sophisticated con game perpetrated by her then-fiancé, George Everard. To protect herself from the law and the wrath of those who lost everything, she creates a new identity, a Frenchwoman named Vivienne Gregsby, and sets out to recover her father’s art collection, prove her innocence and exact revenge on George. ctober foliage and temperatures sing a siren song to suburban families eager to experience apple picking and pumpkin farms. Children delight in the annual tradition, and the experience helps connect them to where such foods originate – before they reach supermarket shelves. From that perspective, Ready Readers recommends sharing these two books with young children accompanying you on your fruit-focused odyssey. Read the books before and after your outing. Children should enjoy both anticipating the experience and reminiscing about all the things they heard, smelled, saw, touched and tasted, making memories that will last a lifetime. Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell and illustrator Lizzy Rockwell, this month’s first book, follows a young girl and her parents as they drive to a country farm for an apple- and pumpkinpicking adventure. The process of traveling to the farm and observing various animals leads to venturing into the orchard to search for and pick apples from the trees. When they’ve filled their bushel basket with shiny red apples, the trio walks

to a nearby field in search of a plump, perfect pumpkin. Readers follow the pumpkin’s journey from vine to home, where it’s hollowed and carved, then placed on the front porch with a candle burning inside, just in time for trick-or-treating. The seasonal stage is set with the book’s opening line, “When red and yellow leaves are on the trees …” and the muted but saturated colors of Lizzy Rockwell’s pictures carry the autumnal mood throughout the book. This story should appeal to a variety of ages and may kick older preschoolers’ Halloween imaginations and appetites into high gear. Our second recommended book may inspire

conversations and creative entrepreneurial activities. Apple Farmer Annie by author/illustrator Monica Wellington showcases the main character as a nontraditional farmer: a young girl who grows apples, as opposed to the typical Old MacDonald and his noisy menagerie. In it, readers meet Annie at harvest and follow her crop’s path from being plucked from a tree through being sorted and ultimately to being turned into cider, applesauce and pies. Going further, readers see Annie packing the “most beautiful” apples to sell at a farmers market and enjoying the happy commotion of people purchasing her goods. Wellington’s brightly colored illustrations portray the scenes in a homey, relatable way. Besides the text itself, the book includes many opportunities to involve emergent readers and mathematicians. The end of a successful day leads Annie to share her three favorite recipes with readers, extending the apple explorations into your own home.

Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier

With Halloween fast approaching, three of the metro area’s finest confectionaries are bracing for trick-or-treaters – of all ages.

B

ecause nothing will spook a true aficionado of sweets faster than one of those bags of cheapies now flooding supermarket shelves, Ladue News recently turned to three confectionary experts for Halloween solace. Even foundering amid such cheapies, candy connoisseurs need feel no fear, according to Christina Abel, a second-generation chocolatier at Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company; Teri Bearden, the owner of Merb’s Candies; and Maureen FitzGibbon, marketing assistant at Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier. Local devotees of everything delish should instantly recognize those confectioneries’ names. Boasting a 350-year-old heritage dating from 17th-century France, Bissinger’s has been gracing the metro area with European-style chocolate excellence since 1927, often using a family cookbook from 1899. Since 1981, meanwhile, the artisanal Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate multigenerational family and team have been producing premium chocolate in small batches, dedicated to putting “A Smile In Every Box,” to quote the company’s tagline. Last but scarcely least, Merb’s – a family-owned and -operated institution since 1921 – has gained nonpareil fame for its chocolate-covered strawberries, but also offers temptations ranging from heavenly hash to good ol’-fashioned peanut brittle. The three confectionaries in question, as it happens, begin preparing for the wants and needs of costumed tots and those tots’ parents – strictly in a supervisory capacity, of course – months in advance. “In early spring, we start planning the items that we’ll be offering for fall/Halloween,” Abel, of Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate, relates. “Once we have the items planned out, we’ll start ordering in packaging to make sure we have all of our supplies in stock and ready for production.” Bearden notes that Merb’s operates much the same: “Like any company during busier seasons, we increase production and hours. We do a lot of corporate orders this time of year and try to have all large orders on the schedule ahead of time so that we can get all raw materials ordered.” Something similar holds true for Bissinger’s. “To prepare for Halloween and the upcoming holiday season, we begin recruiting seasonal staff by the end of the summer, in August,” FitzGibbon says. Although it seems unthinkable that anyone in the metro area has failed to visit Bissinger’s, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate, Merb’s or all three, the trio of experts helpfully synopsizes what a hypothetical newcomer to their individual confectionaries might find most intriguing at Halloween. “We have an amazing selection of pumpkin pie items – our pumpkin pieflavored items are a huge hit with customers,” Abel says. “We have a sevenpiece pumpkin pie caramel box, a seven-piece pumpkin truffle box and a seven-piece fall collection box made up of seven seasonally inspired pieces and a pumpkin spice latte craft chocolate bar. Additionally, we also have solid chocolate items in the shapes of pumpkins, ghosts, witches and more!” “The best and most famous fall treat here at Merb’s Candies is our giant Bionic Apple,” Bearden states. “They make great personal and corporate gifts.” FitzGibbon, meanwhile, notes: “The classic assortments will be available – including our Bissinger’s chocolate-covered Halloween sandwich cookies, with cute characters decorated on top; our skull and pumpkin chocolate lollipops, great for trickor-treating; our signature Halloween characters; and

our autumn caramel-filled presents! We would also recommend many of our autumn seasonal items and other everyday items, like our classic molasses lollipops.” The three also cite without any doubt their confectioneries’ best-selling offerings for trick-or-treaters – and, of course, trickor-treaters’ valiant parents. “For Halloween, our pumpkin pie items and caramel apples are best-sellers,” Abel states of Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate. Pommes also enjoy top popularity at a second of the three confectionaries. “The Bionic Apple is hands-down the best-seller this time of year,” Bearden, of Merb’s, notes, “but chocolatecovered strawberries and snappers – caramel, pecans and chocolate – aren’t far behind.” And Bissinger’s? “The best-selling would be the cookies and the Halloween milk chocolate characters,” FitzGibbon says. The three experts otherwise exhibit no qualms about sharing their own partialities from their individual confectionaries. “For Halloween, my personal favorite is a caramel apple,” Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate’s Abel relates. “We use Granny Smith apples, cover them in our famous vanilla-butter caramel and add roasted, salted pecans. We also offer them plain, without nuts. The tart apple, sweet caramel and salty pecans create a perfect mix of flavors and, thus, is my very favorite!” “The Bionic Apple!” Bearden, of Merb’s, exclaims. “It’s just the most amazing combination of flavors. You won’t taste anything better than our sweet homemade caramel and southern beans smothering a tart Granny Smith apple.” “Dave Owens, our chief chocolatier and vice president of taste, enjoys the molasses lollipops the best,” FitzGibbon, of Bissinger’s, says. “Many of our staff enjoy the Halloween cookies, as they’re a great crowd-pleaser and great for entertaining.” FitzGibbon, finally, also expresses a grace note for trick-or-treaters in specific and goody gourmets in general. “Overall, Bissinger’s celebrates Halloween as one of its favorite holidays.” she says. “There are generations of children who will get to grow up with Bissinger’s chocolates as part of their Halloween traditions – and what’s better than that?” What indeed?
