CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE
SOCIETY WE’RE BEGINNING TO SEE HINTS OF THE HOLIDAY season: Supermarket aisles are stocked with stuffing and pie filling, department store trees are all lit up, and The Rockettes are in town. There also is another indication—if you’ve been paying attention: Demand at area food pantries is higher than usual; and in this issue, you’ll find out just how great the need is. We also heard from our friends at Nurses for Newborns, who alerted us that they’re seeing the hungriest of little ones right now. Many of our fellow St. Louisans simply do not have the money or means to feed their families. In fact, resources are so scarce, some of the staffers are donating out of their own wallets. “We have to,” the head nurse told me, “I have to be able to sleep at night.” The organization is seeking donations of non-perishable food items and grocery gift cards. Call 544-3433 to help—and it just might help you sleep better at night.
FEEDING THE HUNGRY For many, the holidays mean big family dinners with tables full of delicious food. But for others, a meal at any time is hard to come by, much less during the cold weather months when limited budgets dictate heat over turkeys. Local organizations are working to feed needy families during the holidays and all year round.
MY DREAM LISTINGS From historical architectural gems to luxurious modern mansions, some of the area’s most sought-after high-end properties are on the market. And with historically low interest rates, the timing is better than ever to make one of these your ‘dream’ home.

November is upon us and it’s never too early to be thinking about what you will be donning to holiday parties. And who better to showcase some gorgeous party wear than the beautiful (and absolutely talented) Miran Halen, soprano for the St. Louis Symphony? With the stunning Powell Hall as the backdrop, these gowns will inspire you to get ‘all decked out’ for the holidays.

BIRTHDAY LUNCH FOR MARY STRAUSS
S
CAPE IN THE CENTRAL WEST END was the place to be if you were one of the lucky ladies celebrating with birthday girl Mary Strauss. Best buddies of the celebrant gathered for a sumptuous lunch, where everyone was greeted with Champagne, followed by a delicious seafood salad, and topped off with chocolate mousse for dessert. One of the highlights was hearing everyone’s ‘Mary’ stories. Joan Quicksilver, Gay Hirsch and Louise Lane served as hostesses.
DIANE’S SCOOP Cynthia Frohlichstein noted that her husband, Harvey, shares the same birthday as Mary Strauss. In fact, she has been calling them twins for years…Joan Quicksilver is looking forward to sharing Thanksgiving dinner with her entire family from all four corners of the United States… In the near future, Mary Strauss will be receiving the Washington University Distinguished Alumni Award…One party guest spoke about Mary coming to visit her in the hospital. She recalls how Mary gave her a gift of watercolor paints and a sketch pad and said, “You can start with a clean slate and paint the colors of what you want the rest of your life to be.” She said it was a great inspiration for her and aided in her recovery.

Do I need to worry about spinal steroid injections?
Many of you have heard the news in recent weeks about cases of fungal meningitis resulting from contaminated steroid injections used for the relief of severe back pain. The latest figures indicate more than 250 cases with over 20 deaths nationwide. So often, the alarming news does not tell the whole story. Tainted medicines caused these infections; the steroid injections are not at fault. The cases are a result of a unique production of fungal-contaminated steroid produced and distributed by one pharmacy called the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham, Massachusetts. These were custom-made drugs, not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration for safety and quality. There are no reported cases in Missouri and no record of a Missouri purchase from this compounding pharmacy. The meningitis outbreak should not cast a harsh light on epidural injections themselves.
Current and prospective patients of the Pain Management Center at Washington University/ Barnes Jewish Hospital should not be concerned as we have never acquired any medications from NECC of Massachusetts or any pharmacies owned by the same individuals. Still, if you have any apprehension, we advise all of our patients in need of steroid injections to call us with questions. At the Pain Management Center of Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital, we have varied treatment options, medical and non-medical. Steroid injections are one of many available treatments, using only FDA-approved commercial product. As board-certified pain specialists, we value the use of steroid injections in treating chronic and acute back pain. Even short-term relief can prove invaluable in jump-starting long-term treatment, which often involves exercise and other physical therapy.

ROSSMAN SCHOOL
Extended Family
Head of school Pat Shipley reads to Rossman School students
EVERY MORNING, HEAD OF SCHOOL PAT Shipley stands at the doors of the school, greeting each child by name as they arrive. The scene epitomizes the atmosphere that Rossman School aims to cultivate among the members of its community. “We’re intentionally a small school, and it allows us to build personal relationships with each child and their parents,” Shipley says. “The spirit of the school is really a family spirit.” That family spirit is echoed throughout all aspects of Rossman. Founded in 1917, the school teaches 230 students in junior kindergarten through sixth grade, providing a rigorous education, while emphasizing the principles of kindness, honesty, respect and responsibility. “Every child knows what those guidelines are and what they mean,” Shipley explains. “It starts from the very beginning.”
An 8-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio enables teachers to provide close attention to each child in their classroom, while every faculty member eats lunch with the students, and homeroom teachers monitor recess. In addition, every student is a member of a ‘Rossman Family,’ individual groups made up of children from every grade and led by a faculty member. Celebrating Nonprofits in 2013

HE OLD WORLD ARCHITECTURE AND contemporary interior design of Palladium Saint Louis could set the stage for your next nonprofit event. For 2013, nonprofits will receive $2,013 off event packages at the historic venue. “We recognize how much nonprofits do for our community on a daily basis, and we wanted to find a way to give back,” says Maggie Eichwald, director of sales and catering. “Nonprofits typically have one large fundraiser each year, and this special is ideal for that.” Palladium is carrying the deal into 2014, with $2,014 off 2014 charity events. Since its 2009 inception, Palladium’s sixmember event planning team has created one-ofa-kind events for nonprofits such as MDA, Craft Alliance and Gateway to Hope. In addition to the new discount, nonprofits will continue to receive Palladium’s standard charity savings of 10 percent off package-pricing for the first three months of 2013 and 25 percent off rental fees all year. Feeding the
Hungry Food Pantries Fill the Need
FOR MANY, THE HOLIDAYS MEAN big family dinners with tables full of delicious food. But for others, a meal at any time is hard to come by, much less during the cold weather months when limited budgets dictate heat over turkeys. These local organizations are working to feed needy families during the holidays and all year round.
Volunteers help out at Food Outreach
FOOD OUTREACH On Nov. 4, Food Outreach will partner with St. Louis BWorks for its seventh annual Cranksgiving, a bike ride that doubles as a food drive as the route takes participants past local grocery stores, where they purchase and donate non-perishable items. With more than 7,000 food items donated annually, the event helps the organization meet the spike in demand that comes as the holidays arrive. “We’re going into that increased need period as the colder months arrive. Higher utility bills are kicking in and people tend to eat more in the colder weather, so we see more people coming in,” says Food Outreach executive director Greg Lukeman. Now in its 24th year, Food Outreach provides nutritional support while enhancing the quality of life for people living with cancer or HIV/AIDS. The organization offers an integrated frozen prepared
meal and grocery program with a registered dietician to specialize the services to each individual’s needs. A hot lunch every Monday, as well as nutrition education and cooking classes, enhances the offerings that Food Outreach makes available to its 2,000 clients and their families. While food drives throughout the year help gather needed items, targeted efforts during the holidays by various local organizations enable Food Outreach to provide more for its clients, including extra food packages and the occasional turkey, Lukeman notes. In addition, extra fundraising allows the nonprofit to distribute approximately 750 gift bags filled with personal care items and a few treats like candy canes to spread the holiday spirit. “With all of our efforts, we’re on target to provide half a million meals by the end of this year,” Lukeman says. “It’s all about empowering and partnering with the clients.” Continued on page 20

OPERATION FOOD SEARCH With the challenging economic climate, Operation Food Search’s partner agencies have reported a 30-percent increase in food assistance requests. As the weather turns cold, those requests will continue to rise, says executive director Sunny Schaefer. “During the holidays, people naturally turn their thoughts to helping others, so there’s an outpouring of support, but keeping up with the need is almost impossible.” While the needs are daunting, Operation Food Search does what it can to make a difference. The hunger relief organization helps feed the area hungry by collecting food from all segments of the local food industry, then distributing that food to a network of 250 partner agencies such as emergency food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. In addition, its Operation Backpack program feeds hungry children during the weekend when they are not in school and may not have easy access to meals. Operation Food Search relies on the community’s willingness to step up during the holidays to aid in its additional efforts. The organization reaches out to food vendors and individuals for assistance in obtaining turkeys, organizes food drives and encourages financial donations. “For every $1 we get, we’re able to collect and distribute $22 worth of food,” Schaefer notes. Recognizing that more food is not the only thing needed as the holidays arrive, Operation Food Search has teamed up with Kurt Warner’s First Things First Foundation for the Warner’s Warm-Up Coat Drive through Nov. 14. The organization hopes to collect 15,000 coats for the region’s disadvantaged during the harsh winter months.
HARVEY KORNBLUM JEWISH FOOD PANTRY The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry is interested in anything it can do to give people the necessities of daily life. While food is its main business, the food pantry welcomes basic items that can help improve someone’s life—something as simple as a fleece blanket as the temperature drops. “People want to contribute and we just want it to be really beneficial for our clients, while at the same time being fulfilling for our donors, as well,” says community outreach coordinator Donald Meissner. A program of Jewish Family and Children’s Services, the Jewish Food Pantry feeds approximately 5,000 people every month. Clients can come to the pantry once a month for enough food to last for seven to 10 days. While the pantry has canned and dry goods, it always is looking for more supplies, particularly fresh fruit, vegetables and kosher meat. In the next couple months, the Jewish Food Pantry expects to see an uptick in the number of people relying on the program for food, and it relies on the response from the community to meet the need. “Someone just bringing in a donation really helps us get through the season,” Meissner says. Additional food drives also help, and more volunteers step up to assist at the pantry. While Meissner is grateful for the extra help, he hopes that the increased interest can carry over past the holidays. “What we wish is that people will come to volunteer and realize that they can come back anytime—people are hungry all year round.”
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL People want to do something special for their families during the holidays, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul does what it can to help make that happen, says development director Robert Vogel. “Each chapter or conference works to serve its own neighborhood. Sometimes it’s a special dinner program during the holidays or coordinating a turkey or ham drive, but they try to meet the needs at a local level.” Founded in 1845 as the oldest charity in St. Louis, St. Vincent de Paul operates 143 chapters throughout the St. Louis area and eastern Missouri. Among the many services the society offers families in need is access to food pantries located in 83 of the locations. Some are no bigger than a closet, while others are stocked like corner drugstores, Vogel says. The pantries rely on donations from grocery stores and food distributors or manufacturers, as well as individual contributions. The self-funded Catholic organization also hands out food gift cards, totaling $70,000 this past year. While families want to do something special for each other during the holidays, they often think more about giving back during that time, as well. St. Vincent de Paul fields calls from those looking to help, and while it does not have regular volunteer opportunities like a soup kitchen, it encourages donations, whether it’s food or financial contributions. Although ham and turkeys are highly requested during the holidays, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat always are in critical demand, no matter what time of the year it is, Vogel explains. “That’s the biggest challenge we have and people are in need of those items all the time; not just at the holidays.”

That provides services to the entire state of Missouri, as understanding of the service those soldiers are
providing has made him equal to the task as board president for the USO of Missouri. “Our job is to support these soldiers, and the impact we have is superb,” he says. “The soldiers come and go through the facilities, but it makes a difference.” Shortly after moving to St. Louis 10 years ago, Bruchas was encouraged by a friend to attend a USO board meeting and he was quickly hooked. During the next several years, he moved up the ranks before becoming board president in 2011. The retired fighter pilot, who now works for Heizer Aerospace, is committed to the organization’s efforts, which range from proving a place for family game nights to a quick bite to eat during pre-deployment training. The USO also offers a program that films soldiers reading books to their children, wellness dogs that provide comfort, and support for the Warrior Transition Unit, Bruchas details. “They really appreciate that we’re there for them. The commanders can call us at any time, and if we can, we’ll show up.” Bruchas also is helping to lead the way as the USO reaches out to the younger demographic, encouraging them to learn about the organization and get involved. Sustained financial and community support also is key. “We’re concerned that as the war winds down, interest in the active duty soldier will be lost,” he explains. Bruchas will step down as president at the end of the year, but taking up the position as chairman of the board will allow him to stay involved in a personally important cause. “Being able to give back something that I know is needed for these soldiers is a great reward.”

Miran Halen SOPRANO MIRAN HALEN CONTINUES TO EVOLVE HER art. As a versatile singer of opera, symphony, chamber and recital music, Halen frequently performs for the St. Louis Symphony’s Parties of Note, and also has starred in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with the Houston Opera. Also a musical education advocate, she has performed during benefit concerts such as the 30th anniversary of St. Louis Children’s Choir. Through the years, Halen says her performing abilities and voice have gradually matured. “I know what my strengths are, and to what repertoire I am more ideally suited. I also know my audiences well, and know what they like most.” During performances with the Symphony, Halen enjoys sharing a deep musical connection with her husband, the orchestra’s concertmaster, David Halen. “I think it creates a deeper appreciation and understanding of each other,” she notes. “Our shared passion for great music has drawn us closer together.” Through the Symphony’s Parties of Note, Halen loves interacting with the orchestra’s devoted patrons in the intimate setting of local private homes. “It’s terrific how the Symphony is performing both on the magnificent stage at Powell Hall, and also out in our community, which is so very important.” Shot on location at Powell Hall, home of the St. Louis Symphony since 1968. Located in Grand Center, and added to the National Historic Register of Historic Places in 2001, this former movie house and vaudeville hall is widely regarded as one of the most renowned and acoustically superior concert halls in the United States.

DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN
The Doctor is In HALLOWEEN WAS JUST A FEW DAYS AGO, SO I’m sure the kids still have bags of candy around the house. With candy comes the threat of cavities (and a perfect segue into childhood dental care). Care of your child’s teeth begins at birth and continues through life. Although newborns and infants rarely have teeth (the first tooth usually pops in between 6 and 9 months), it’s important to remember that routine dental care should begin at birth. Use a damp washcloth to wipe your newborn’s gums after every feeding and NEVER leave your baby in bed with a bottle. As soon as that first tooth pokes though the gums, begin using a soft bristle toothbrush with a tiny pea-size smear of toothpaste after feedings. Ask your doctor about the timing of your baby’s first trip to the dentist. Some recommend making the first dental visit after the first tooth appears and before the first birthday. Others recommend the first visit sometime after the first tooth appears but before all the baby teeth are present, generally before 2 ½ years of age. If you have someone to BY DR. JOSEPH KAHN
help, you may want to bring your child along with you to one of your routine dental visits prior to his first exam. That way, he can see the dentist is not threatening and become familiar with the sights and sounds of a dental office. As your child gets older, routine dental care should include brushing at least twice daily. Let your child help choose a toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are great and fun. My little princesses love brushing with their princess toothbrushes, and my grandson brushes like a madman with Buzz Lightyear. When your child gets permanent teeth, he should begin flossing every night at bedtime. Take your child (and yourself) to the dentist for routine examinations every six months. Discuss dental sealants with your dentist, as well. They can protect teeth and prevent cavities for many years. One concern parents have regarding their child’s teeth is thumb-sucking and the use of pacifiers. This generally only becomes a problem if the habit persists much beyond the third year of life, because it can cause bite abnormalities. Talk
to your child’s dentist if you have concerns. When your child begins to participate in sports, remember to protect the teeth. Most contact sports require mouth guards, but talk to your dentist about how to get the best fit and when they should be worn. And what should you do Continued on page 79

Seasonal Affective Disorder
A
S WE ENTER THE COLD, DARK WINTER months, there are those among us who become S.A.D. And this isn’t just a passing episode of mild winter blues: Thousands of Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, a condition in which people become depressed and lethargic between late fall and spring. “S.A.D. starts to set in late in the fall, when the days are shorter and the sun’s rays are not as bright as in the summer,” says Dr. Adelita Segovia, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with Clayton Behavioral. “Usually the symptoms are worse in the winter months, with remission of symptoms in the spring and summer months. It is also worse in the northern latitudes, areas farther away from the equator.” The condition affects both adults and children, she notes. Although kids can be S.A.D., diagnosis in children is more difficult than it is in adults. “Common sense tells us that time of year probably impacts children, teens and adults about equally, but the first obstacle is making an accurate diagnosis of depression in a child when children don’t always exhibit depression in the same ways that adults do,” says Dr. James Feinberg, a child clinical psychologist in Kirkwood. For instance, depressed adults tend to exhibit more lethargy than children. Feinberg notes that a clinical diagnosis of S.A.D. requires a prior history of depression and an obvious resolution of symptoms when days lengthen, followed by a relapse when daylight again diminishes in autumn. A history of at least two years is required for diagnosis, which is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a subtype of major depression. “Kids haven’t really been alive long enough to make that diagnosis accurately and then get a two-year pattern,” Feinberg says. “But by the time they get to the age of 15, it’s much easier to diagnose. By then, they look a lot more like adults who are depressed.” Diagnosis in young children is typically dependent on the observations and BY CONNIE MITCHELL

THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT LUNG CANCER
Crush the
HABIT BY CONNIE MITCHELL
Cancer is often hard to pin on a particular cause. Lung cancer, however, is one of the few that is clearly linked to a specific behavior: smoking.
‘S
MOKING TOBACCO PRODUCTS IS by far the leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for 90 percent of cases,” says Dr. Bryan Faller, a physician with Midwest Hematology Oncology Consultants and Missouri Baptist Cancer Center. That statistic accounts for most of the more than 226,000 new cases of lung cancer estimated in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society. The other 10 percent of lung cancer cases may be linked to a variety of risk factors, including second-hand smoke, radon gas, asbestos and diesel exhaust exposure, family history and a prior lung cancer diagnosis. Given the overwhelming evidence that smoking is the primary cause of most lung cancer cases, “smoking cessation is the greatest preventive strategy,” says Dr. Ramaswamy Govindan, an oncologist and lung cancer specialist with Washington University Physicians. For those who do stop smoking, he adds, “Over time, the risk decreases, but it can take years—10 to 20 years.” Smokers and recent ex-smokers need to be especially diligent in monitoring their health. Govindan refers to a National Cancer Institute study, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), which compared low-dose CT scans to chest X-rays as screening tools in smokers. Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicated that
participants who received the CT scans had a 20 percent decreased risk of dying from lung cancer than participants who received standard chest X-rays. “Currently, screening is advocated only for cigarette smokers who are between the ages of 55 and 74 years old, have been smoking for at least 30 ‘pack-years’ and who continue to smoke or have quit within the past 15 years,” Faller says. “Low-dose CT scans of the chest performed annually for three years is recommended. This form of screening was recently found to be life-saving for this very high-risk group of patients,” he adds. To determine ‘pack-years,’ multiply packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years smoked. A persistent cough with no associated explanation, such as allergies or a cold, should be assessed by a physician. Other concerning symptoms include coughing up blood, unexplained shortness of breath and rapid, unexplained weight loss. “It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cancer, but it’s something to check out,” Govindan notes. Other types of lung disease, such as emphysema, also are common in smokers and can share some of these symptoms. The most important message from physicians and national health organizations is consistent: If you don’t smoke, don’t start; and if you do smoke, quit.
IF YOU DON’T SMOKE, DON’T START; AND IF YOU DO SMOKE, QUIT.
Given the grim statistics about smoking and the risk of lung cancer and other serious pulmonary diseases, as well as smoking’s role in cardiovascular disease and other illnesses, quitting is one of the most important things a smoker can do for his health. But, as most smokers know all too well, breaking the addiction is hard. That’s why so many smoking cessation programs and tools have been created. From over-thecounter nicotine patches to prescription drugs to support groups, a variety of approaches can lead to success. The American Cancer Society (ACS) wants Thursday, Nov. 15, to be the day that smokers commit to quit by participating in the Great American Smokeout. “Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet more than 45 million Americans still smoke cigarettes,” states the ACS. “However, more than half of these smokers have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year.” Despite all the available smoking cessation aids, one thing is the key ingredient to a successful bid to quit smoking, according to area experts. “The bottom line is that not one single thing will help until you’re ready to quit smoking,” says Ellen Brennan, a lung health nurse navigator with SSM Cancer Care. And she doesn’t just mean when people say they’re ready—she means when they’re truly ready on an intellectual and emotional level. Karen Lane, St. Luke’s Hospital pulmonary rehabilitation coordinator, agrees. “In general, most smokers quit six to nine times before staying smoke-free,” she says. “If smokers try to quit because they know they should or at someone else’s prompting, they have less than a 10 percent chance of staying smokefree. Once they decide they want to quit, they are successful 70 percent of the time.” The Great American Smokeout is designed to create an opportunity for smokers to set a ‘quit day’ and create a plan to stop smoking on that date. Because many smokers don’t know where to begin with a smoking cessation plan, professionals at area hospitals and health care organizations are available to assist with the process from start to finish. For instance, Lane says that the St. Luke’s Tobacco Cessation Counseling program offers one-on-one consultation with a respiratory therapist for tobacco cessation. “The curriculum includes information on nicotine replacement (gum and patches), stress-reduction training, cognitive restructuring, social support and relapse prevention counseling, as well as handouts and workbooks,” she says. Brennan’s list of available services is very similar. Yet she notes that many smokers quit successfully just by sticking with one basic step: Stop. “A lot of patients quit better cold turkey,” she says. “They get it in their mind to do it, and they just do it.” {LadueNews.com} NOVEMBER 2, 2012

The VP of retail sales and marketing at Signature Kitchen & Bath says the entire process is built around helping clients realize the vision that might already be in their heads. “If we ask the right questions and listen, we can pull that information from the customer and create exactly what they want for their home,” he says. Signature Kitchen & Bath recently opened its third location on Manchester Road in Rock Hill, providing full-service design for kitchens and baths. Offering major national brands, along with its own Signature line of cabinetry, the process allows homeowners the option of ‘buying local,’ Cline notes. “By having that manufacturing capability, with an 80,000-square-foot facility in St. Charles, it provides a unique opportunity to support our neighbors.” He notes that all of the lines carried at the shop are customizable. “You

don’t have to take cookie-cutter cabinets. These are designed for your space.” The showroom also includes partner brands, California Closets and Elite Stone & Marble. California Closets was acquired by parent company Lami Wood Products Corp. approximately a year ago, and the growth has been exciting, Cline says. “We offer complete organizational services, including walk-in closets, pantries, laundry rooms or home garages, even the home office,” he notes, adding that while St. Louis is typically traditional in a design sense, California Closets is an international company that incorporates contemporary influences. “If you’re from St. Louis and you like contemporary, you can find yourself challenged. It’s not to say that we don’t have traditional pieces, as well, but those contemporary pieces are available.” During the design consultation process, clients also are presented with a 3-D artistic rendering Continued on page 79

FROM HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL GEMS TO luxurious modern mansions, some of the area’s most sought-after high-end properties are on the market. And with historically low interest rates, the timing is better than ever to make one of these your ‘dream’ home.
4 BRIARBROOK TRAIL | DES PERES A one-of-a-kind Old World-style Tuscan mansion with modern amenities sits on a private street in Des Peres. “Attention to detail is evident throughout the property,” says Karen Hoemeke of Coldwell Banker Premier Group. Those signature touches begin on the 5-year-old, 8,800-square-foot house’s exterior, which features tumbled stone and stucco, a copper turret roof and a solid mahogany front door. Inside, a two-story grand salon with a 20-foot bay window wall showcases more intricate touches, from the cast stone fireplace to solid, hand-scraped hickory hardwood floors and a spiral staircase. Rooms with a view exist throughout the home, from the eat-in kitchen overlooking the back veranda, pool and putting green, to the main floor master suite’s bay window view of the backyard. The master also features a walk-in closet, a spa-like bathroom suite with a Jacuzzi tub that has a waterfall, and a French door to the backyard veranda. The five-bedroom, 6.5-bath home also has a three-car garage and a finished lower level, including a recreation room, stone fireplace, full bar, media room with a 100-inch screen and theater seating, full bathroom and workout room. 1300 Log Cabin | Ladue Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a rare panoramic view of the custom-designed landscape at 1300 Log Cabin Lane in Ladue. Built in 1958 and renovated inside and out in 2010, this contemporary home features heated Portuguese limestone floors, split-faced Georgia marble walls, an 800-bottle wine room and a custom chef’s kitchen. Outside, a gas firepit, screened porch and pool are surrounded by lush landscaping on 3 acres. “The original owner took seven years to plan the home, and the current owner perfected it to today’s lifestyle,” notes Helen Costello of Laura McCarthy Real Estate. “Each room epitomizes the comfort of splendid finishes and inspired design.” The five-bedroom, 4.5-bath home is on the market for $2.595 million. “It is truly a stunning contemporary home that is rare in the St. Louis market,” Costello says.
24 Fordyce Lane | Ladue A great hall with a cathedral ceiling is the centerpiece of a custom home designed by Massachusetts architect Graham Gund at 24 Fordyce Lane in Ladue. “This is a significant home on an extremely private 3.2-acre property,” John Ryan of Coldwell Banker Gundaker notes. Built by Higginbotham Bros., the 24-year-old estate features exceptional millwork, casework and hardware. Playing off a variety of geometric shapes, the home also includes custom circular windows and octagonal living and dining rooms on either side of the great hall. The master suite continues the octagonal design with two dressing rooms and a luxury bath. Additionally, the 4,000-square-foot home, offered at $2.15 million, has two bedroom suites and an oversized two-car garage, with a gardener’s room and second floor office, four fireplaces and an elevator.
15 Ladue Lane | Ladue Constructed in 1974 by a renowned art collector, 15 Ladue Lane is a private oasis, says Gai Lowell of Janet McAfee Real Estate. Gardens designed by Vivian Gellman and a 6-foot, serpentine-style brick wall create a private outdoor living space, complete with a pool, slate patio and pool house. Inside, the six-bedroom, eight-bath home was recently remodeled, with a built-in 300-gallon salt water fish tank highlighting the family room. “Everyone is entranced by it,” Lowell says. Another unique area of the home is the almost 30-foot gallery hall, which has exceptional art lighting and opens to a 21-foot octagonal room featuring a 12-foot domed ceiling with a skylight. “The effect is highly dramatic upon entering the residence,” Lowell notes. This 7,500-square-foot home on two acres is listed for $2.5 million.
300 S. McKnight Road | Ladue Built in 1926 and designed by Maritz and Young, historic architectural details have been maintained throughout a nine-bedroom ‘English countryside-style’ home at 300 S. McKnight Road in Ladue. The unique design starts with a soaring entryway, dramatic wrought-iron spiral staircase and arched, leaded patio doors, which provide a stunning view of the garden, notes Marge Kubik of Gladys Manion. “From the moment you step into this home, you feel the grandeur and craftsmanship.” There are two master bedrooms, connected by a dressing room. A sitting room and private screened porch offer a relaxing space off one of the suites. The home, offered at $2 million, also boasts seven fireplaces, two additional staircases, stone porches, floor-to-ceiling and bay windows, and a four-car garage with a charming carriage house. “Every time I step into the home, I discover another interesting nook or cranny that I hadn’t seen before,” Kubik says. “I don’t think you will find anything like it in St. Louis.”
2019 S. Warson Road | Ladue Nestled into a secluded wooded area off Warson Road in Ladue, a renovated two-story Colonial home offers comfort, as well as luxury, according to Jody Carr of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty. “It is very warm and inviting, with a beautiful, casual elegance.” After an extensive three-year renovation, the ’60s-era property more than doubled in size to 12,000 square feet with the addition of a large family room and first-floor master suite, featuring heated limestone floors. Natural light floods the rooms through 20-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, new walking paths wind from the limestone patio and pool to fresh flower gardens. The home, which is on the market for $4.5 million, has five bedrooms with five full baths, as well as four half baths. Other amenities include 11 fireplaces, an attached four-car garage and a detached one-car garage. “It’s a very unique property,” Carr says. “You have to see it to believe it.”
6 Countryside Lane | Frontenac As you drive down Countryside Lane in Frontenac to the No. 6 circle drive, a three-level brick mansion will take your breath away, according to Diane Gorris of Prudential Alliance Realtors. A massive, elegant front entry welcomes guests into a two-story foyer and great room with a gas fireplace and walls of windows overlooking the salt water pool and gazebo, great for entertaining. And even more areas of the property are made for entertaining, Gorris adds, such as the formal living and dining rooms, large, updated kitchen and brightly lit breakfast room with doors that open onto a newer deck. The lower level also features a master suite with double-closets, a bubble tub and shower, double-sink vanity and heated floors. The second floor has four additional bedrooms and two Jack and Jill baths. Other amenities include a den, three-car garage and lower level, complete with a wood-burning fireplace, recreation room, full-size kitchen, bedroom, bath and second laundry area. Built in 1989, the 9,000 square-foot, fivebedroom, five-bathroom and two-half-bath home on a private acre is listed at $2.2 million.

BIG Upswing JUMBO MORTGAGES ARE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK. While the housing market continues to recover slowly, these privatemarket jumbo home loans recently have rebounded in a big way. Larger home loans known as jumbo mortgages are up 20 percent from last year in the Clayton, Ladue and West County areas, according to local lenders. That’s more than double the jump jumbo loans have made nationwide this year, according to Wells Fargo & Co. “They have jumped over the past year because the higher-end homes have been still selling really well,” says Mark Cooper of USA Mortgage. Lower home prices also have contributed to the spike, he adds. “The people who have the ability to buy high-end homes are getting steep discounts, and that’s creating good demand.” When the credit crunch hit in 2008, there was a period of time where the jumbo market was MARK COOPER, USA Mortgage virtually nonexistent, says Jamie Frazier of First National Bank. “Lenders had really backed off from far-ahead increased rates, so it slowed the market.” But throughout the past several years, lenders have eased up on the requirements. Today, to qualify for a jumbo loan—typically between $417,000 and $1 million—homebuyers must have their income verified on two years of tax returns. Some lenders also require a high-end credit score—at least 700 for a $500,000 loan, for example, Frazier notes. Additionally, some lenders will request more liquid assets on larger loan amounts. “This can vary greatly from one investor to another,” Frazier says. Customers also have to be prepared for a lengthier process. The loans, which are underwritten by the bank and not guaranteed by the federal government, have a 45- to 60-day return time. Despite the longer process, Cooper and Frazier agree this is a good time to take advantage of historically low interest rates and get a jumbo mortgage for a discounted high-end home.
“THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO BUY HIGH-END HOMES ARE GETTING STEEP DISCOUNTS, AND THAT’S CREATING GOOD DEMAND.”

s the great songwriter Noel Coward once penned, I’ve been to a marvelous party…Recently, I crossed the pond to celebrate my 50th birthday with friends in Nice, France. For a day’s diversion, we drove to Cap Ferrat, considered the world’s second most expensive residential location after Monaco. W. Somerset Maugham, who maintained a home there, referred to this area as “the escape hatch from Monaco for those burdened with taste.” While there, we toured the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. I’m sure you have heard the name Rothschild. It is synonymous with incredible
wealth—and style. They had so much style that the term ‘Goût Rothschild’ refers to an interior decoration style that can only be described as over-the-top opulence: a mix of elaborately woven fabrics, patterned wood floors, gilt moldings and lots of crystal and porcelain—not for the minimalist or budget-minded client. Yves Saint Laurent and Robert Denning made this style popular in the 20th century. The best concentrated example in the States is Newport, R.I. Those ‘cottages’ were the monuments of newly amassed fortunes by Americans paying homage to families with centuries of wealth in Europe. Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild
(1864-1934) was born into a family of privilege and wealth. She was the daughter of Baron Alphonse and Leonora de Rothschild. At age 19, Béatrice married Maurice Ephrussi (1849-1916), a Russianborn banker who had done business with the family. Béatrice was a woman of grace and style. She was the one who commissioned the Rothschild Fabergé egg in 1902 as an engagement gift for her sister-in-law to-be. It was that same year that she paid a visit to her husband’s cousins’ villa at Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the French Riviera. Mesmerized, she decided to purchase a 17-acre parcel of land on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat where she would build her Venetian-style villa with Continued on page 56

Rothschild, filled with the most precious of rare porcelains, crystal, Old Master paintings, sculptures, objets d’art, French furniture by the most exquisite cabinet-makers, and the finest textiles, marquetry and parquetry.
British garden designer Harold Peto and French landscape architect Achille Duchêne were called upon to design the Villa’s nine gardens, each with a different theme. Reportedly, the baroness had the inspiration for her gardens aboard the

ocean liner Île de France. She wanted to feel as if she were on the bridge of the ship, surrounded by her gardens and then looking past them to the spectacular views of the sea. Thirty gardeners— dressed as sailors, complete with berets with red
pompoms—maintained and manicured the gardens. Béatrice also was an animal lover and had a menagerie that included exotic birds, flamingos (they resembled the color of the exterior of her villa), monkeys, mongooses, antelopes and gazelles.
The baroness later separated from her husband, and died childless in 1934. She left her property and its contents to the Academie des Beaux-Arts. It is now open to the public (villa-ephrussi.com / en/home).

Rams tight end Mike McNeill
GAME ON!
I
T WAS THE SPRING OF 2005. MIKE McNeill was a junior in high school. He was at home in Kirkwood, and he had just gotten the mail. There was a letter from Nebraska, but he wasn’t quite sure what it meant. He thought they were offering him a scholarship. He asked his mom to read the letter. Afterward, she thought the same thing. They weren’t quite certain. So they actually called the Nebraska recruiter and asked, “Does this mean you are offering a scholarship?” The recruiter laughed
before telling them yes, they were offering. McNeill didn’t play any organized football until his freshman year at Kirkwood. He was too busy playing select soccer (indoor and outdoor). He loved soccer. However, he tried football and his skills were undeniable. McNeill exploded his junior year for the Pioneers catching 44 balls over 800 yards as the tight end position. (Keep in mind, the other target was a guy named Jeremy Maclin.) McNeill kept getting bigger and stronger. He is now 6-foot-4, 235 pounds with 4.6-second
40-yard dash speed and a 35-inch vertical jump. Those physical gifts, along with great hands, is the reason Mizzou, Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Colorado and Texas Tech—along with Nebraska— also offered scholarships. At Nebraska, McNeill set the school record for receptions by a tight end with 32 in his sophomore season. He started for three years and scored a touchdown against Mizzou in Columbia. He went undrafted but the Colts signed shortly afterward. He spent last season on their practice squad before making it with the Rams this year. McNeill is not starting but he’s playing quite a bit and getting some work on special teams. At age 24, Mike McNeill’s best football is ahead of him. I caught up with him shortly before he got on the team plane for London. Why Nebraska? They were the first to offer. They believed in me right away. They had an NFL coach at the time and I thought he could help me get to the League. When I visited, there was no better facility or game-day atmosphere. How painful was draft day? It was disappointing. It does go through your mind, Why didn’t I get drafted? or Was I good enough? However, I knew I would get a chance. The Colts called during the draft and told me that they wanted me to come play in Indy. When did you know you had some real talent? I was never really much bigger or stronger. I was athletic. I was fairly smart in the way I ran my routes. I did some good things my junior year. I started lifting weights. I knew I had chance to get to college and play. How about the awe stage of being in Indy with Peyton Manning? It was crazy. I grew up watching him—everybody did. He was a really nice guy. I didn’t get to play with him because of his injury. I did play catch with him. He was fun to watch in meetings and be around. His knowledge of football was incredible. What are your goals and how do you achieve them? Right now, I am a backup. My goal is to be a starter. I have a decent skill set, but I have to be a little heavier and a little stronger. What is that NFL paycheck like? It’s awesome. You get to play the game you love. I have friends who sit in a cubicle and they get a fraction of what I get. It’s definitely a blessing.
1. Twenty-seven of the players on the Rams roster from last season are no longer playing football. How bad was that organization? The worst five-year run in NFL history. 2. The Cardinals have more flame-throwing young right-handed pitchers in the organization than they have ever had. The Bill Dewitt era is the best we have ever had it. 3. Why would any woman need to have surgery on her body? All they have to do is go to Lululemon and buy those athletic clothes, and you look like Jessica Alba. It’s like a successful diet without having anything to do with food. You lose 20 pounds by putting on the clothes. OK, enough of my thoughts on women’s clothes. 4. It’s a sign of age or maturity—or me just being boring—but I find myself watching the political shows more than SportsCenter nowadays. 5. I don’t know what Lindenwood University has more of: new, brick-and-stone buildings or beauty pageant contestants enrolled in school.

FIVE THINGS I THINK:
DIV ER SIONS
report baldwin
unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world* BRITNEY SPEARS
The pop star’s former manager, Sam Lufti, took the stand in his lawsuit against Spears and her family, claiming that Brit had a serious drug addiction for most of the five years he managed her career. Spears’ attorneys struck back, saying Lufti was never officially her manager. Yes, manager is definitely not the right term for what he is. More like, what’s the name of that fish that attaches itself to the shark as it swims along?
CHRIS BROWN The Don’t Wake Me Up singer has found himself in some more drama with the ladies. Brown has reportedly repaired his relationship with Rihanna after their domestic violence issues in 2009. Now the singer’s ex is vowing to get him back, saying she will do whatever it takes to break Chris and Rihanna up. So for all of you out there looking for a reason to be happy that you’re not in your 20s…
TAYLOR SWIFT The unlucky-in-love singer debuted her latest album, Red, last week. The video for the lead single, Begin Again, features Swift in picturesque settings throughout Paris romancing a gorgeous Frenchman. That’s sweet. I mean, she’s dated every guy in America, so she didn’t have much choice, but still…
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND JESSICA BIEL The newlyweds recently tied the knot in Italy. Photos of the ceremony and reception, including shots of the V.I.P. guests and Biel’s stunning pink gown, all can be seen in People magazine. Wow. So Justin Timberlake actually went through with it. Justin Timberlake got married. I owe somebody 50 bucks.

O, HALLOWEEN WAS LAST WEEK. It was fairly standard. Whiny scouted neighborhoods for maximum candy retrieval. Punch received text alerts as to which houses were giving out the best candy—better still, where people simply left the bowl out on the front stoop. I’m not proud. The only change this year was a small thing, a gentle shift in the tectonic plates of the Baldwin family. When I asked Cranky where she was going to trick-ortreat she replied, Mom, I Murtaugh-ed trick-ortreating last year. While I admit, I am not fluent-speaking teenager, I am completely conversational in ’80s movie references. As you may recall Sergeant Murtaugh is Danny Glover’s cantankerous character in the Lethal Weapon franchise. Whenever Mel Gibson’s psycho Riggs would drag Murtaugh into some life threatening situation, Murtaugh would shake his head and say, I’m getting too old for this #@. That’s fine. I’m fine. I mean, really, I’m fine with it. The last thing you want is a group of teenage girls going door-to-door in strange neighborhoods unsupervised. So, if you look at it like that, being too old to trick-or-treat is a good thing. I’m fine. Did I mention I’m fine?
Debbie Baldwin
TANGENTIAL THINKER Her first Halloween, Cranky was a daisy. She had a little rosebud mouth stained red from a lollipop and big cloth petals all around her face. She took off her diaper in a neighbor’s yard and cried when a kid dressed like a ghoul came to the door. Good times. But now she’s 14. She’s clearly too old to trick-or-treat. Sadly, she is not too old to put on a costume. But now she wants to be a Baywatch lifeguard or a genie. Halloween has suddenly become a hall pass to look like a hussy. Time marches on. Instead of trick-or-treating this year, Cranky hung out at a friend’s house with a group of kids and watched scary movies. There may have been a prank or two involved. I know there were boys. You know, a couple of weeks ago, I found that daisy costume in a box in the garage. I know I should donate it to the Goodwill, but somehow I just can’t bring myself to part with it.

DIV ER SIONS MOVIE REVIEW
REVIEWS THEATER REVIEW
Clybourne Park THE STORY Chicago’s Clybourne Park neighborhood in 1959 is a fine place to live. But there’s a caveat: You can live there if you look like its white residents. When Russ and Bev put their modest, three-bedroom bungalow up for sale, they’re visited soon after by Russ’ former Rotary pal Karl.

ONESTLY, I THINK MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE. Reviews of this film use words like ‘epic,’ ‘expansive,’ ‘grandiose,’ ‘sweeping’ and ‘spectacle.’ And yes, all those words apply. This movie is a thriller, a romance, a drama, a tragedy, a sci-fi movie, a floor wax and a dessert topping. In many ways, the film is brilliant — maybe it’s too brilliant. But in the midst of all this scope, I found it hard to completely invest. The film captures what was widely considered to be an unfilmable novel of the same name. There are six interwoven narratives that range from a 19th-century ocean voyage to the distant future. The lead actors, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving, all play multiple characters — exceptionally, I might add. The cinematography, direction and score are all a 10. A few distracting make-up glitches aside, the film is visually stunning. This movie will be on every Oscar-contender list. It’s Blade Runner meets Master and Commander meets Howards End meets 17 other movies. It’s epic—we get it. I also have a feeling it’s one of those movies that in a week, I’m going to decide it is about something completely different. So, add thought-provoking to the list of adjectives.

NO SNICKERS
It turns out that a black family named Younger has purchased the home from the realtor. While Russ and Bev weren’t really aware of that, it doesn’t change their decision, which prompts Karl, who is president of the neighborhood association, to change from nervous to threatening. The all-white neighborhood, he says, won’t tolerate the presence of a black family. In Act II, fast forward to 2009, where the same brick bungalow is a shabby shadow of its former tidy existence. A young white couple has purchased the property as ‘gentrification’ has caught their fancy. They want to make significant changes to the house, but the local community insists that their home adhere to the look of the community, which now is black. While half a century has passed, the era of ‘political correctness’ can’t disguise growing hostility between the new residents and representatives of the neighborhood. Will the circle be unbroken?
HIGHLIGHTS What makes Bruce Norris’ multiple award-winning play stand out is a remarkable foundation built on a specific human story that is introduced in Act I and then brilliantly concluded in the stunning climax to Act II. While the subject of race can be addressed endlessly from the antiseptic corridors of academia to the soiled residue of a corner bar, Russ and Bev’s story is the real bricks and mortar of this provocative and poignant tale.

Norris’ drama was inspired by playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark work, A Raisin in the Sun. Superior performances abound from the stellar septet of players nurtured by director Timothy Near. The show’s singular most powerful moment, though, stoically positions six of those performers staring in silence across the stage while the seventh weeps inconsolably behind the set. It is a revelatory scene that will linger in your memory as vitally as Bev’s achingly perceptive comment, “I am ashamed of every one of us.” Grab a seat — if you can find one — for this superior example of insightful writing and that will grab your heart and soul in an iron vise. Zia’s on the Hill
A Taste of Italy
Zia’s on The Hill has been a popular eatery in that neighborhood since the mid-1980s, eventually venturing into retail sales with salad dressings and sauces, and most recently entering the food truck scene with its own rolling restaurant. The Zia’s brick-and-mortar space, which takes up the corner of Wilson Avenue and Edwards Street, used to be an Italian grocery back in the day and still exudes an Old World charm. Menu-wise, Zia’s had a generous selection of all of the standard Italian dishes, from Vitello (veal) to Pasta. The menu offered some suggested wine pairings next to many of the items — always an appreciated touch. For an apertivo, the Seafood-Stuffed Mushrooms ($9), seemed a fine place to start. The dish consisted of five jumbo mushroom caps cooked in plenty of butter and stuffed with what was described on the menu as a combination of shrimp, clams and crab in a “garlic butter stuffing, topped with Parmigiana.” Unfortunately, whatever seafood was included was sparse; the stuffing tasted mostly of cheesy breadcrumbs. One thing Zia’s can boast about is its generous portions. We ordered a small Zia’s salad ($7), and BY SIDNEY LEWIS
it was almost a meal in itself. This bountiful bowl of greens was what most folks envision when they picture a typical Hill salad: romaine and iceberg lettuce, chunks of ham, artichoke hearts and olives topped with curly shreds of cheese and doused in the sweet Zia’s house dressing. The Pollo Alla Spiedini ($15) came with a dinner salad and a side of pasta, most of which ended up in a to-go box at the end of the meal. The chicken was covered in breadcrumbs and charbroiled. While the meat was tender and well-cooked, the whole dish could have used a healthier sprinkling of spices. The Pomodoro ($12) was a hefty bowl of fettuccine, which was cooked nicely al dente and chockfull of mushrooms and olives. It was drenched with a marinara sauce, which was on the sweet side. To cap things off, we split a pair of sweet, flaky Cannoli ($4), with chocolate chips in the filling. Price-wise, Zia’s proved to be very affordable, with most entrees being in the $15-to-$20 range, and as noted previously, we got a whole lotta food with each course. 5256 Wilson Ave., 776-0020, zias.com.

Rossman School Continued from page 16 character share equal importance. Using programs like 6+1 Traits of Writing and Everyday Mathematics, the challenging curriculum prepares students for the next level at independent secondary schools. While students build their knowledge, they also develop strong moral fiber. “It’s our responsibility as educators to help these children become good people,” Shipley says. “It’s an overall education, helping students develop into responsible young adults who are caring and compassionate.” The results of that comprehensive education come through in everyday examples, like the sixth-grader from Shipley’s Rossman Family who started a ‘peer improve’ effort with her friends, making sure classmates feel included or helping others who are having a bad day. “They understand that one kind act promotes other kind acts,” Shipley says. By building a partnership with parents, Rossman is able to perpetuate its mission throughout the school community, and those parents recognize the efforts, Shipley explains. “I just received an email from a parent to one of the kindergarten teachers, and the line that stood out to me was, you feel like family to us.” After 95 years of education, Rossman School is focused on readying its students for the future, working on collaboration, teambuilding, public speaking and other assets that children will need in a global, connected society. In her 10th year as head of school, Shipley gets to see those efforts firsthand every day, whether she’s greeting children in the morning, or reading to each class, as she does once a week. “Any opportunity to be with the students is so uplifting and reminds me why I became an educator. It’s my favorite part of any day.”

Themes also can be incorporated into the event’s overall design. “Ninety-nine percent of the time, we do custom event packages with a specific menu and design,” Eichwald says. The venue’s offerings include full-service cuisine; chic table settings featuring chameleon chairs, flatware and glassware; cocktail party-style white leather lounge furniture; a stage and podium; LED lighting; surround-sound; on-site parking; and views of the Arch and city skyline through large palladium windows. Florist Brian Blasingame directs audio and visual effects, including delicate details such as floral centerpieces and candles, and larger elements such as projection images and overall layout, Nix says. “He listens to exactly what they want for the event aesthetic and works with all budgets.” Sous chef Chad Vanderleest tailors the menu to give every event the freshest and prettiest plates, Nix adds. Seasonal menu offerings include hors d’oeuvres such as Bourbon smoked shrimp and mini mufalleta; main dishes feature chicken, beef, pork or fish; and dessert pastries include pear Napoleon and Italian dolce. Dental Care for Children Continued from page 41 if your child’s teeth are traumatized or if a tooth is knocked out? Remain calm and try to find the tooth. If your child is old enough not to swallow it, place the tooth in its socket. If you can’t do that, place the tooth in a glass of milk. Either way, get to the dentist immediately. Finally: a word about fluoride. Fluoride prevents tooth decay. Pediatric dentists recommend brushing with age-appropriate amounts of a
fluoride-containing toothpaste. They’ll also often apply topical fluoride to your child’s teeth during routine check-ups. Safe, sufficient amounts of fluoride are added to the public water supply in most urban and suburban communities. If you drink well water or bottled water, or have concerns that your drinking water doesn’t contain an adequate amount of fluoride, talk to your child’s doctor or dentist about possibly adding fluoride drops to your child’s diet.
Signature Kitchen & Bath Continued from page 48 of their project. This can be a great benefit in helping clients really visualize and take control of their redesign, Cline notes. “Some folks can look at white paper with boxes drawn on it and that’s all they need, but I like to be able to see what it’s going to look like when it’s done.” Signature Kitchen & Bath also has strategic partnerships with a variety of suppliers, along with additional locations in Manchester and St. Charles. “We carry a lot of samples in the store, but in some cases, there are literally thousands of products,” Cline says. Through its partnerships, designers and their clients can see all of those samples to get the perfect materials for their design. “If I had to use one word to describe the experience, it would be ‘alignment,’ ” Cline sums up. “It’s about truly asking the right questions, listening and then making sure we’re in alignment with our customers—from the perspectives of aesthetics, functionality and accessibility. We let them set the tone and accomplish what they want to get accomplished.”

concerns reported by parents and teachers. However, Feinberg also recognizes ‘school affective disorder,’ his term for the depressive symptoms some children and adolescents express due to the stress and demands of the academic year. Lethargy, irritability, changes in appetite, a decrease in academic performance, and disinterest in friends and activities can be signs of psychological distress in children and teenagers. If a person is S.A.D., there are treatments that can help alleviate depression and listlessness. “Light therapy is an effective form of treatment and usually with less adverse effects than medications,”
Segovia says. “It requires a special type of lamp that emits light resembling the brighter summer sun rays. The standard dose for treatment is 10,000 lux of white, fluorescent light for 30 minutes per day.” Antidepressant medications may be used in conjunction with light therapy. Feinberg advises clients who have been diagnosed with S.A.D. to begin light therapy in early October as a preventive strategy. Bathing in the light during breakfast is often the best plan, he says. He also encourages children, adolescents and adults to spend as much time outdoors as possible when autumn arrives. {LadueNews.com} November 2, 2012
