s the daylight hours grow shorter and the weather gets cold, it’s never been a better time to find vibrancy and joy through art. The Saint Louis Art Museum engages patrons with galleries spanning countries and eras of the world, promising something for everyone. “You don’t know what you’ll discover,” confirms Jennifer Thomas, the museum’s director of annual programs. “I’m always finding something new every time I walk through the galleries.” The Saint Louis Art Museum follows the city’s mandate for 50 percent capacity and requires masks for patrons to ensure that the museum can remain open during the pandemic. Reservations aren’t required, but Thomas adds that there hasn’t been a problem with capacity. “The museum is a big place, so social distancing is easy to maintain in our large galleries,” she says. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised at attendance. Our patrons have felt safe and appreciate what we’ve been doing. We’re all really happy about that.” For the winter season, there are new exhibitions of all sizes ready to be viewed. Beginning in November, the “Storm of Progress” exhibition will show off the museum’s collection of German art, spanning 200 years, and smaller

exhibitions show off everything from works of art made from recycled electronics to ink paintings from ancient Asia. For those unable to get out, the Saint Louis Art Museum has been engaging the community online through a variety of initiatives, including members receiving a daily email with a new object from the museum’s collection, including some that aren’t currently on view; and a digital version of the museum’s Wee Wednesdays, an educator-led story time with children that includes showing off a piece of art and walking through an easy-to-make art project. “Support from our community provides us with operating support and helps make us a great museum,” Thomas adds. “We have membership perks [including] advanced notice of everything we’re doing and discounts on shopping and parking. It’s helpful now and at all times.” The museum gift shop is also a great way to show support and is full of unique gifts in time for the holiday season. In cold and tough times, art is something we can use to connect with ourselves and one another. “This is a place for everyone,” Thomas concludes. “Take a minute for yourself and just discover.” Saint Louis Art Museum, One Fine Arts Drive, St. Louis, 314-721-0072, slam.org

KIDS MD
RAISING MENTALLY STRONG CHILDREN By Dr. Joseph Kahn
A
t a time when many people are struggling with mental health, it’s important to know that kids aren’t immune. Thirteen percent of all youths ages 8 to 15 have a diagnosable mental disorder. Almost 4 percent have anxiety or mood disorders, and nearly 3 percent suffer from depression. These conditions limit our children’s ability to succeed in school, to thrive emotionally and to live happy lives. The way we, as parents, communicate with children can help them nurture their emotional health in a positive manner. Proactively ask your child how he or she is doing. If you notice he or she is either way up or way down, ask specifically about emotions, with questions such as “How are you doing emotionally?” It’s important your child sees that you know he or she has unique and personal emotions, that you care about him or her and that he or she can let you know about those emotions. Don’t be critical, don’t be negative and do be nonjudgmental. Intentionally plan time to spend with your children – uninterrupted time devoted to them and them only. Remember, the greatest gift you can give your child is your time and undivided attention – and it’s less expensive and more meaningful than a Nintendo Switch. Ask your children routinely what makes them smile or laugh. Ask what

makes them grateful. Continually point out the good in life and the things to be thankful for – the good things that make it easier to deal with the bad. Finally, be sure your children know they can bring any problems to you. Let them know that they can bring hard and challenging issues to you and that you can help them make the right choices themselves, without telling them what to do. Remember, children learn behavior by observing that of their parents, so if you are open and honest, they will be with you, too. Laying the groundwork for this communication with your preschooler and school-aged child will make dealing with adolescence that much easier.

BUSINESS NOTES
SPILLING THE TEA By Drew Gieseke | Photos courtesy of Blooming With Joy Tea Co.
T
hirty seconds is all Michelle Pohl needs to find you the right tea. Seriously. Pohl owns Blooming With Joy Tea Co., a specialty loose tea company based in O’Fallon, Missouri. She runs the show in the family operation, which produces more than 60 different blends and varieties of green, black, white and herbal loose-leaf tea. For Pohl, it’s a passion project that became a full-time job. “I saw how I was affected positively by drinking a cup of tea,” she says. “Whether I’m tired or stressed, if I drink the right cup, I’ll get the right result.” Pohl first began touting tea publicly when speaking to women’s groups about finding joy during difficult times in life. In her signature talk, Pohl detailed seven different tips – one of them being drinking tea. “It’s not going to end all your problems, but it will give you a little light to get you through that moment,” she says. The original plan was to sell tea only during her talks, but the tea soon became so popular that she shifted her focus. Pohl learned more and more, and for the past five years, it’s been all tea, all the time.
14 November 6, 2020 | LadueNews.com
Now the company ships across the country, with customers in 46 states and even Mexico and Canada. Tea drinkers can purchase blends in three different sizes: 2 ounces, 6 ounces and a sample size, with product available online, at the company’s Elderberry Place store or in retailers around the area. But what’s so wonderful about what Pohl has built is the company’s following. Dubbed “Joyfuls,” Pohl’s customers leave kindhearted reviews and even send handwritten thank-yous. The entrepreneur returns these messages in kind with personal email communications of her own, like earlier this year, when she introduced her family’s new golden retriever. Pohl also connects with customers during demos at pop-up spots around the area. At them, she really shows off her expertise. Between how to brew and what styles work best with the time of year or time of day, you know you’re in good hands as soon as Pohl starts talking tea. COVID-19 has since slowed these showings, but a display of online support from the Joyfuls kept
Blooming busy through the spring. With the end of the year approaching, Pohl remains as hardworking – and as passionate – as ever. “I don’t see us stopping anytime soon,” she says. “I absolutely love what I do.”

CABBAGE AND SWISS CHARD
GRATIN Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott
S
et the tone of your Thanksgiving table with this gratin. I chose to combine cabbage and Swiss chard because they both pair beautifully with the simple yet decadent sauce made with cream and a blend of fontina and Parmesan. It’s a one-pan execution, which I especially appreciate during the hectic holiday season, and you can easily start the process the day before any gathering – just add an additional 10 to 15 minutes if you’re baking the next day.
ln
Cabbage and Swiss Chard Gratin Serves | 4 to 6 | 3 Tbsp olive oil ½ white onion, julienned 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 small head cabbage, julienned 3 Tbsp butter s alt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup heavy cream 1½ cups water 1 cup shaved Parmesan and fontina blend, divided 1 bunch Swiss chard, stems removed ½ cup panko bread crumbs | Preparation | Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat oil in 12-inch cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, cabbage and butter; season generously with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium, and cook until cabbage has softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Add cream and water; cook 10 minutes. Add ½ cup of cheese blend; stir to combine. Add Swiss chard and adjust seasoning. Top with remaining cheese blend and bread crumbs. Transfer to oven and cook 30 minutes. Remove from oven and set on wire rack to cool slightly, 5 to 10 minutes. Serve warm right out of pan, if desired.

GERSHMAN MORTGAGE
Loan Closing
IN THE DIGITAL AGE By Maggie Peters
G
ershman Mortgage has been working on the most innovative ways to serve its clients for 65 years. This includes working with the latest and best technology, and using it in ways that help streamline processes and help clients close quicker. This year, Gershman Mortgage launched its new hybrid loan closing platform, allowing borrowers to review and sign the majority of documents from the comfort – and safety – of their homes. “We originally thought of this process prior to COVID-19, to increase efficiency and really improve the closing experience for our borrowers,” says President Adam Mason. “With the onset of the pandemic, we quickly adapted to the new environment and placed this project at the top of our priority list because of the social distancing it allowed for, as well as the reduced closing time in the actual office.” The hybrid process gives borrowers the opportunity to closely study the necessary paperwork before making important decisions. There isn’t the rush or pressure to sign while in an office, and the client has the time to come up with questions for the lender. “It allows the borrower to review documents and sign almost all of them prior to arriving at the closing table,” Mason says. “The process increases accuracy and borrower understanding.” It also cuts down on time; with the hybrid process, closing can be handled in less than 10 minutes with final signatures. Although some documents still need to be “wet-signed,” many are handled through Gershman Mortgage’s secure encrypted system, resulting in an expedited closing. This new process isn’t the only way Gershman Mortgage uses technology to assist its clients. “We have our mortgage app on borrowers and referral partners’ phones,” Mason says. “Our online application is also very user-friendly. We text our borrowers notifications throughout the process so they know where it’s at. Our automated review process means our borrowers have the opportunity to provide us feedback on every loan closing as we aim to always improve the customer experience.” In these unprecedented times, clients are enjoying a way to cut down on the stress of loan closing. “It’s been an overwhelmingly positive response,” Mason concludes.

A Focus on the Parc Provence MeMory care
Possible By Maggie Peters | Photos taken prior to the pandemic by Westrich Photography
M
emory lapses can make life harder to navigate, especially when living alone. Parc Provence Memory Care provides an assisted living residential community and top-of-the-line skilled nursing, there to help you or your loved one with personalized care. “We do this because no two people with Alzheimer’s or dementia experience the disease in the same way,” says Parc Provence administrator Kathy Aragon. “Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are experienced in stages or phases, which means a plan of care is often adjusted to fit new situations and abilities. We think this approach allows for quality of life, safety and comfort in ways that a one-size-fits-all plan simply cannot.” Parc Provence offers a continuum of care, able to support those who are able to maintain independence as well as those needing more support. The community understands that a disruption in routine is difficult for people with a cognitive disease and have made it easy for a resident to transition from Parc Provence’s assisted living community to its skilled nursing care. “Many communities specialize in just one type of care,” Aragon explains. “Assisted living memory care offers support to residents who need assistance in some aspects of their lives, [while] skilled nursing memory care is appropriate for individuals who require daily, continuous care.” Parc Provence works to be patient-centered in both its care and its activities. The community is designed to enhance the quality of life and provide safety and comfort by offering activities for cognitive and sensory stimulation, physical activity, social connection and more. “We use weekly themed activities that might be centered on, say, camping, wild animals or a beach party to help our residents to express themselves creatively and find fun in their lives,” Aragon adds. “All activities at Parc Provence, whether performed in a group or one-on-one, are part of an overarching and consistent routine.” The comfortable, attractive community has beautiful outdoor spaces and five households, defined by similar abilities and care requirements. This means that each resident is part of a community with similar needs and abilities. Events and activities that occur within the household are tailored to fit residents and include no more than 10 people at a time, helping to ensure individualized care. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges for Parc Provence, its residents and their loved ones. “We continue to be fluid and responsive to the pandemic so that we can offer best practices to our team members, residents and community at large,” Aragon says. “As new information has become available, we have altered safety protocols at Parc Provence so they reflect best practices.” The current enhanced safety measures at Parc Provence include requiring personal protective equipment for all team members; limiting visitors to outdoor areas; weekly COVID-19 tests for team members and residents; increased cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces and use of an antimicrobial, nonchemical disinfectant mist in all of the common areas; and use of additional HEPA (that is, high-efficiency particulate air) filters. “Because many living in our community are at higher risk should they contract COVID-19, we are working closely with our medical directors, who are specialists in Alzheimer’s disease and geriatric medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, to ensure we have proper protocols in place to protect residents and staff,” Aragon says. “We are also working with the appropriate regional and national authorities to stay abreast of the latest medical and scientific information available.” The focus at Parc Provence is to empower each resident to function at the highest ability, encouraging what is possible for people with difficult diagnoses. Aragon recommends learning what kind of care your loved one needs, and then learning more about what Parc Provence can provide for him or her.

S
tanding the test of time, Old Newsboys will continue the St. Louis tradition, which started in 1957, of raising money for grassroots organizations each year on the Thursday before Thanksgiving. Old Newsboys Day has weathered every storm – and a pandemic is proving no different, as the organization goes virtual for its trademark event. “At Old Newsboys, we give to more than 150 local charities – smaller charities that aren’t funded by larger corporations,” says Paola Stange, event co-chair. “They send in grants that we review every year. Grants for things like diapers, formula, shoes, backpacks, underwear – all the things we take for granted. These charities don’t have enough to supply to the kids that they serve. We try to fill that gap.” This year, many local charities are struggling to meet the needs of a community rocked by the global health crisis. From limited access to vital resources, with school and business closures, to food and diaper shortages, nonprofits are called to serve more than ever before. Each year, people in bright green aprons take to city corners with a stack of papers in their hands, asking passersby to donate whatever they can. At a time when social distancing is the safest measure of protecting citizens and its volunteers, Old Newsboys seeks community support to further these causes through a new format. “It’s a long-standing tradition in St. Louis and we pride ourselves on that,” Stange says. “Rain, snow, sleet and now COVID-19 won’t keep us down. We want to make sure everyone stays safe and decided it would be better to do a virtual event. and #oldnewsboysday. Followers can look forward to special celebrity appearances via the organization’s social media accounts on the Thursday before Thanksgiving. “A lot of times, people would empty the change in their cars because they don’t carry cash anymore,” Stange notes. “This year, we’re going virtual and hopefully people can donate more than pocket change.” Stange and her husband, Kirk, are following a legendary line of chairpersons at Old Newsboys, including Stan Musial, Ozzie Smith and Billy Busch. Lou and Jackie Brock served as chairs emeritus and, with Lou’s passing in September, the organization mourns a great loss. This year’s special publication, written by local high schoolers, will be dedicated to the Brocks to honor the baseball star’s memory and the family’s commitment to bettering St. Louis through Old Newsboys. The Nov. 19 issue of St. Louis Post-Dispatch will include the special issue, with an e-issue also available online through November and December. The Stanges, founding partners at Stange Law Firm, chose almost a decade ago to take part in the Old Newsboys’ mission to serve at-risk children because it matched well with their own calls to action. “My career choice is indicative of my love for children,” Stange says. “Through my work, I try to create the best possible outcome for families.” Her husband, Kirk, agrees. “It’s important to give back, to get involved, to make the community a better place,” he says. “Old Newsboys is one that supports many charities and does so much good. The mission is fantastic, helping kids. There’s no better choice.” This November 19, the week before Thanksgiving, do your part to contribute to the St. Louis area community by supporting Old Newsboys Day. “Old Newsboys is a tradition,” Stange adds. “It’s one of the things that makes St. Louis a special place.” oldnewsboysday.org

hen April Jensen reflects on the design of this narrow and tall formal living room, she describes its symmetry, its modern simplicity and its cozy-yet-glamorous vibes. “Everything mattered in this space because we didn’t want to crowd it, but we wanted it to seem very luxurious,” says the namesake of Brentwoodbased design firm ADJ Interiors. ADJ Interiors specializes in “comfortable, livable luxury” tailored to each client’s lifestyle, which often involves interior architecture, space planning and overall collaboration with the architect or homebuilder from a project’s inception. For this project, Jensen worked with St. Louis’ Johnson Development Company to build a child-

friendly home for a Ladue family that anticipated three boys running through the hallways, as well as entertaining professional crowds from time to time. “We really took the approach of making sure that we kept their family in mind with what we were designing, and of course, everything had to flow, work together and be coordinated without being overdecorated,” Jensen explains. She aimed to pay homage to the vintage Art Deco style and give the living room “a little pop or pizazz.” With blue being one of the clients’ favorite colors, the cool hue provided an ideal pop of color alongside chartreuse, complementing the warm, dark wood textures, shades of gray and gold details throughout the home. The rustic beams framing the elegantly
modern chandelier have a grounding, warming effect on the space, Jensen says. She thinks this feature, plus the extended fireplace and tall mirrors, help balance the room. Most of this space’s furnishings were purchased through Maryland Heights’ KDR Designer Showrooms, and hanging above it all is gold-framed, custom artwork by Creve Coeur’s Ted Collier. “We had [the artwork] specifically made for that room based on the fabric and the colors we were using in their home,” Jensen says. “I think that artwork just ties it all together.”

hen Betsy Nacrelli founded Collections by Joya, Anthropologie was her “pie-in-the-sky dream customer.” Just five years later, that sweet dream has come true for the St. Louis small-business owner with the recent launch of her local jewelry company’s latest line in Anthropologie stores nationwide and online. “To now have Anthropologie as a client is a dream come true – a silver lining on an otherwise trying year,” Nacrelli says, noting how hard the COVID-19 pandemic has been on small businesses across the metro area and beyond. In a partnership born out of persistence, an Anthropologie buyer stopped at Joya’s trade show booth about a year ago. “She walked in and said, ‘Joya … That sounds familiar,’” Nacrelli recalls. “And I then confessed I had emailed her every week for three years, as I believe our brands are the perfect fit. I guess persistence really does pay off. From that meeting, we began working with their team to create a collection! It has been an incredible pinch-me moment from the start.” In another big development this year, Joya also made the move in late May from its former studio in St. Louis’ Dogtown neighborhood to a larger new space in that municipality’s Locust Business District. The “gorgeously

renovated,” 3,600-square-foot studio features high ceilings, exposed brick and considerable natural light. “We were searching for a unique space that can operate as a showroom, event space, office space and warehouse,” Nacrelli says of the nonstorefront space. “We wanted to put our feminine Joya spin on the otherwise industrial building, so we filled the space with lush plants, a mural in our signature blush painted by our immensely talented intern, Shale [Kennedy], and fun, midcentury furniture from local vintage shops … [including] one of our favorite additions, [an] emerald green velvet sofa.” The new digs have already sparked creativity – namely, Joya’s new fall/winter 2020 collection available at Anthropologie, which has a local storefront at Saint Louis Galleria in Richmond Heights. “[The collection] is all about layering,” Nacrelli says. “From rich gold link chains and hoop earrings to delicate new additions to our signature Deco Diamond collection, the entire collection is built to layer.” Inspired by the couture looks from this season’s runway – which featured layer upon layer of necklaces, bracelets and earrings – the pieces create an opportunity for individuals to express their own signature style and personality with a personalized layered look, Nacrelli notes. Although the self-proclaimed “thankful and proud St. Louis smallbusiness owner” has been busy making major moves with Joya this year, she also has taken time to look beyond her own company, responding to the pandemic and social justice issues by giving back. “From the beginning, we have built our business on a platform of giving back to women’s charities,” Nacrelli explains. “All of the challenges of 2020 really opened our eyes to the amount of need. We spent hours as a team researching local and national charities with a wide range of initiatives.” As a result, Joya donates 10 percent of sales each month to two chosen charities, which recently included Ferguson-based Jamaa Birth Village, a nonprofit providing affordable access to midwives and doulas of color, as well as childbirth and parenting education. “We share the stories and

missions of each of our nonprofits, and we encourage our community and customers to learn more about these amazing causes,” Nacrelli says. The Joya founder credits her team, fellow metro area small businesses and customers for offering love and support during this “crazy” year. “It is a really trying time to be a small-business owner,” she says. “But I am so inspired by the way our amazing city has come together to support one another through this … That, and my amazing team, is what keeps me going. There is no better place in the world to start or own a small business.” As for the next “pie-in-the-sky dream,” Nacrelli aims for Joya to become a lifestyle brand this spring, with a rollout of new designs inspired by her background in interiors and textiles. After all, she knows “sweet dreams” certainly can come true. Collections by Joya (nonstorefront), 2811 Locust St., St. Louis, collectionsbyjoya.com

DINNER TO GO
The Taco & Ice Cream Joint By Mabel Suen
T
he Taco & Ice Cream Joint, a favorite of area Mexican food enthusiasts, debuted in St. Louis’ Gravois Park neighborhood slightly more than three years ago, just in time for Cinco de Mayo 2017. The vibrant eatery comes from the family behind El Morelia Super Mercado, which opened in Bridgeton roughly 18 years ago and which takes its name from the family’s roots in the city of Morelia in central Mexico. Salvador Rico Jr. helms The Taco & Ice Cream Joint, while his father, Salvador Rico, helps in the kitchen. The Cherokee Street eatery takes its own name from the tacos and ice cream served at El Morelia, but expands on the selection with a long list of notable offerings. “We’re trying to offer little pieces of Mexico,” Rico Jr. says. “We have everything from street corn to popular mangonadas [Mexican mango smoothies].” A staple from the original El Morelia menu,

carnitas (literally, “little meats”) feature tender pork slow-cooked for roughly four hours. For tacos, diners can choose from more than a dozen proteins, including shrimp, chorizo and beef tongue, and can also build their own burritos, quesadillas and bowls. Additionally, the menu features tortas, carne asada (grilled, sliced beef) fries, nachos, Buffalo wings and cheesesteaks. Another specialty, the torta ahogada – a “drowned” submarine sandwich – comes smothered in hot sauce; Rico Jr. calls it the perfect hangover meal. At the dessert counter, he and his father have fun experimenting with an array of ice cream flavors, including eggnog, hot chocolate and piña colada. The previously mentioned mangonada, meanwhile, involves two scoops of mango sorbet, the highly variable Mexican sauce chamoy, chile powder, mango chunks and a tamarind stick. Carryout orders for The Taco & Ice Cream Joint can be placed by phone or through Grubhub, which also offers delivery.

ART & SOUL
By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Image courtesy of Marceline Saphian
“M
y name is Marceline Saphian – most people call me Marcy,” states the November Art & Soul subject, who became a cardcarrying nonagenarian a year ago this month. After that affable, charming greeting, Saphian details the background, both general and specific, on the creation of Amid the Flow, the work pictured here. “It is 30 by 40 inches, on Rives BFK printing paper, a new addition to my Changing Landscape series,” she relates. “One of my favorite pastimes when traveling, whether on a plane or road trip – not happening much lately! – is sketching. The landscapes change very quickly as you go by, and I find myself piecing one idea with another and then another and so on.
58
“The designs fascinate me, as mountain becomes river becomes city becomes farmland or forest. The result is, these sketches provide me with many design ideas that can be developed in a number of ways. Since I don’t feel bound by realism, color choice and direction are wide open, and I can pursue my search for beauty and meaning.” Beyond general heuristics, Saphian continues: “My process for this composition was monotype, in which I cut out shapes and inked them, and placed them on an inked plate covered by a sheet of fine art printing paper. This was put through a press – and then, fun time! Pulling the paper from the plate is like Christmas morning – you never know what you’ll get. “Much of my work is then enhanced by layering, collaging and montaging from my many

boxes of scraps from cut-up older unsuccessful prints. I like the feeling of a continuum it gives me, combining old with new, and finding wholeness with a new theme.” Last November, in addition to turning 90, Saphian states: “I won the first place in the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s juried exhibition. Since then, in 2020, I’ve been accepted in nine local and regional shows, many of which focused on the pandemic.” Saphian characterizes herself as a St. Louis-based artist “who’s worked in many mediums, including oil and acrylic painting, fiber and welded sculpture,” before adding, “My current interest is in monotype, collage and multimedia print-related work.” Previously an art supervisor for two public school districts – in Clayton and in Wood River, slightly more than half an hour’s jaunt
northeast of Ladue – Saphian has been involved with the St. Louis Artists’ Guild in Clayton, Art St. Louis in that municipality and the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles. “With Amid the Flow,” she concludes, “the feeling of movement and twisting and turning and still finding connections to form beautiful shapes seems to mimic the complexity of relationships in life and helps me define my own place.”

s part of a luxury chain predominantly co-owned by a Saudi Arabian prince and the second-wealthiest person on the planet (a chap named Gates), Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis perforce takes quite seriously its motto, “An Urban Oasis Along the Mississippi,” as illustrated by a service offering the establishment launched in September in response to COVID-19 complications. That offering bears the name Gala To-Go and seeks to bridge the gap between social gatherings and social distancing, especially in the imperative circumstances facing fundraisers to benefit nonprofits and similar organizations – all in Four Seasons’ high style, of course. “In mid-March, when it became clear that galas wouldn’t be able to proceed as planned, we knew that it would have a devastating impact both on our nonprofit partners as well as our staff,” relates Kristen Swidrak, the hotel’s director of catering and conference services. “We immediately began to think, ‘What can we do to help?’ How could we duplicate or deliver a Four Seasons gala experience without having the guests actually here on-site? “And the Gala To-Go concept was born. It was a collaboration between our director of catering, our chef, our general manager and our director of marketing.” Swidrak continues by briefly explaining what staging a Gala To-Go involves for a Four Seasons client. “We work closely with the [given organization’s] gala committee to determine their budget, their theme and what they want to have included in the Gala To-Go,” she says. “We know that no two events are exactly alike, so we want to make sure we’re creating the Gala To-Go that will give the organization the most impact based on their needs. “From there, we work with our chef to customize a menu and wine pairings that fit. We coordinate the number of boxes that will be needed, and we determine the logistics of how it will work ‘day-of ’ with prep, packaging and delivery to the guests. And then we make it happen!” According to a hotel press release on Gala To-Go, each curated offering typically comprises a three-course meal in heat-safe containers and (as noted) wine pairings, sometimes with extras like event programs and bidding instructions for virtual auctions, all within a luxe black Four Seasons box. The service offers both delivery and curbside pickup, as well as potential assistance with audiovisual needs. Swidrak characterizes the initial reaction to the service as favorable – especially given the involvement as consulting chef of Gerard Craft, arguably the metro area’s leading culinary artist of the past decade and a half. “Anyone can package a to-go meal,” she says. “But our goal – and chef Craft’s goal – is always to elevate to the highest level and to make sure we’re delivering a product and experience that no one else in the city can deliver. “The feedback from the events that have used this service so far is that it added a level of appeal to their ticket sales that would not have been there without the Four Seasons Gala To-Go element.” Finally, with the COVID-19 pandemic scarcely abating to any great degree and the holiday season fast approaching, Swidrak enthusiastically addresses the hotel’s institutional hope that the metro area will embrace Gala To-Go. “There are so many other types of events and individuals that could use this service!” she says. “For companies who had to cancel their big holiday party plans this year, what a gift to your employees to send them an incredible Four Seasons experience that they can enjoy in their own home. For weddings who are doing an intimate micro-wedding and livestreaming the ceremony to their loved ones – how amazing to have everyone enjoy the same meal and have your reception virtually, as well? “The possibilities are endless, and of course, we’re interested in working with anyone who feels that this service will fulfill a need in this ‘new normal.’” Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, 999 N. ven as some humans, depending on temperament, have adapted better than others to this year’s emotional roller coaster, animals, just like humans, differ temperamentally in how they react to the world – a notion explored in Ready Readers’ November picture book pick, Milo and Monty from writer/ illustrator Roxana De Rond. The McKenzie family brings home two new dogs one morning. Milo and Monty enjoy each other and some of the same activities, but the family notices individual traits: Monty likes social activities, while Milo seeks more solitary pursuits. Monty wags his tail and enjoys snuggling with people, whereas Milo shies away and growls when the children attempt to pet him. Milo often seems worried and unable to relax, rarely wagging his tail. He often retreats to his favorite quiet space – under the kids’ desk in the bedroom. How the dogs relate to others and react to their surroundings becomes more pronounced during a visit from extended family. Monty revels in the attention from the cousins, but Milo quickly escapes the excited chatter and conversation, retreating to his desk hideaway. Surprisingly, Milo finds someone else already hiding in his secret spot! It seems that cousin Henry, too, feels overwhelmed at the noise and activity level of the family gathering. Quite contentedly, Milo and Henry spend the rest of the visit together, away from the crowd and commotion. Milo and Monty should open a dialogue between parents and children, helping to understand different personalities and comfort levels. Keep a copy handy to revisit when your child is struggling to cope, and read it together in your special “secret spot” at home.

L
indsey Hinderer’s photography looks as if it could hang in the hallways of a castle or grace the covers of Vogue. Her subjects often gaze into the distance, basking in soft studio lighting and sporting elegant attire. They might have shimmering eye makeup and perfectly contoured skin, or a natural glow that’s equally empowering. Few of those pictured in Hinderer’s portraits have ever modeled professionally, the photographer says. Although she occasionally partners with models, she mostly works with women in their 20s to 40s who are going through some sort of life transition, like being pregnant, experiencing a career shift or even going through divorce. “I think the biggest misconception is that you need to be a model or you need to have a concrete reason [to get your photo taken],” Hinderer says. “I think just the desire to do it is reason enough.” She thinks most women are more likely to schedule professional photo sessions for their families or for special occasions yet neglect focusing on themselves. “I hadn’t been photographed without kids in my arms since my wedding day,” Hinderer adds, reflecting on her own experiences. That’s why she aims to make every photo shoot a treat-yourself experience. “When they come in, they’re like a celebrity for the day,” she explains. “They get pampered – hair and makeup – and don’t have to worry about what’s going on in the outside world. We play dress-up, play good music … I’m very big into making the experience itself really meaningful in addition to them having these beautiful images of themselves afterward.” The creative aspect of portrait photography drew Hinderer into this line of work after a few career shifts of her own. She grew up in Michigan and, after college, moved to Los Angeles, where she pursued a career in the film industry. She says she met her St. Louisan husband while working for Warner Bros., and they later moved to the metro area to live closer to family. Here, she continued the wedding photography business she started with a friend in Los Angeles, but in 2016, she “dipped her toe” in portrait work. She opened her own studio in downtown St. Louis in 2017, and now, as a mother of two sons ages 5 and 9, she’s transitioning out of the wedding photography business and into fulltime portrait photography. Hinderer works with a mix of clients these days: professionals in need of an updated headshot, Saint Louis Ballet dancers and other performers, businesses like Webster Groves’ Lark Skin Co. and nonprofits like St. Louis’ Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation. Each photo shoot is tailored to the client, but Hinderer says she aspires to incorporate elements of fantasy whenever she can. “I love creating things for my clients. The creativity doesn’t always come naturally to them, so we’ll talk prior to their session to pull out of them what they might want,” she says. Clients are encouraged to bring a few outfits of their own, as well as choose from her studio wardrobe – about five racks full of vintage clothes, Etsy finds, custom creations and more. Hair and makeup artists remain on-site from beginning to end, adapting to the various looks being attempted throughout the shoot. Hinderer has practiced this herself. At the height of uncertainty, when COVID-19 temporarily shut down her business and many others in the spring, she visited her studio to capture her own-self portraits. Later, in September, she posted on Facebook “a tiny preview of a new type of session I’m going to be offering, inspired by all the feelings and freedoms this year has stirred up for the women I know, and in me and my business.” She calls it the “Undone Portrait.” These photos emphasize natural beauty and empowerment through vulnerability. “If you’re not feeling good about yourself, or you are feeling good about yourself, those are both good reasons to come in and have your portrait taken,” she says. “Embrace wherever you’re at in the moment.”
