from the
Editor This year’s Ladue News Show House is my first since joining the staff in February, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Week by week, though, as designers shared their inspiration for the blank canvas-rooms they transformed inside the Show House, my imagination would run wild. When the big reveal finally arrived, the transformation left me speechless. The architectural bones of the home alone are exquisite. However, its beauty was truly enhanced by designers from across the St. Louis area who contributed their time and talents to the project – and all for a great cause. Starting on p. 37, we hope you enjoy this final installment – the big reveal – of the 2016 Show House. Although the home’s historic background made it a one-of-a-kind property, the hard work of everyone involved made it a one-in-a-million experience. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this beloved annual event a huge success – we hope you enjoyed the Show House just as much as we loved helping put it together. Speaking of interior design visions, this week’s Abode feature highlights Special Spaces, an organization dedicated to creating bedrooms for children fighting illnesses, who simply need their own special retreats. Starting on p. 26, contributing writer Brittany Nay shares the touching story of this PHOTO BY Sarah Conard

time-tested tradition of dedication to orthopedics and hip replacement holds steadfast as washington University Orthopedics opens a new location at Barnes-Jewish west County Hospital. “As we move forward, standardization, quality and efficiency of care remain very important,” Dr. John Clohisy, chief of adult reconstructive surgery service and director of the Adolescent and Young Hip Disorders Center, says. “This move is a result of the increasing demand for total hip-replacement surgeries and associated costs. There’s a major need for more efficient and effective high-quality delivery of care for patients. Barnes-Jewish west County Hospital lends itself to that. Our goal is to have all disciplines involved in total-care hip replacement for patients through participation in an integrated program, which focuses on rapid recovery and high efficiency.” Typical conditions seen at washington University Orthopedics include hip and knee osteoarthritis, while common procedures focus on hip and knee replacement. “Adult reconstruction and hip-preservation services focus on treatment of degenerative conditions, with hip preservation focused on comprehensive management of adolescent and young-adult hip disorders,” Clohisy explains. “Many patients have associated disorders, such as low-back pain, or medical comorbidities, like diabetes. The goal of our practice is to treat patients in a comprehensive manner. with different specialists available, we can treat patients at the same facility and optimize better control for patients with comorbidities, so they can undergo surgery at a lower risk for complications.”

Research is another important component of washington University Orthopedics, allowing for further investigations into better medical care for patients. “Our most exciting research has demonstrated the newer baring surface materials introduced 10 to 15 years ago are holding up extremely well in follow-up,” he shares. “expectations for replacement durability are changing. Traditionally, we thought of hip replacements lasting 10 to 20 years, and it’s now reasonable to expect replacements to last 20 to 30 years in some patients.” Focus on multidisciplinary treatment includes anesthesia, physical therapy, occupational therapy, operating room staff, clinical nursing staff, care coordination and social work, concierge services, home health services and post-acute care facilities. “This large group of multidisciplinary providers integrated in one location offers the best possible care for our patients,” Clohisy says. “we have a history of tremendous success for our program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital . we routinely rank amongst the nation’s best in outcome metrics for replacement surgery and recently were designated as a best hospital for hip and knee replacement [by] U.S. News & world Report. This track record of excellence in care establishes us as a national leader in total joint-replacement surgery.” Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, 969 N. IMAGINE! GALA

ssistance League of St. Louis’ Imagine! Gala recently filled the Edward Jones atrium in Des Peres with nearly life-size sculptures of animals, befitting the theme of “Lions and Tigers and Bears!” Guests initially sipped cocktails and nibbled hors d’oeuvres while browsing silent-auction items and shopping from a table of offerings from the league’s resale shop, Fabulous Finds. They also were serenaded by The Rebel Jazz Band before being led into dinner by a conga line. The program included honoring Vicki and Doug Hill, enjoying a performance by Zoe Vonder Haar, viewing a short video about the league’s many programs and listening to guest speaker Judge Jimmie Edwards. Funds were then raised, and many fine live-auction items were sold, raising money for the manifold beneficial programs the league runs throughout the region.

s the growth in special education continues to spiral, the demand for services rises. Special education is expensive, as is having a child with a disability. No one entity can provide for all the needs of all the students. Hence, the Special Education Foundation of St. Louis strives to bolster areas where tax dollars fall short, like funding hearing aids, specialized equipment, scholarships, summer camps, arts in the classroom, leadership and teacher mini-grants. The foundation relies solely on private donations for support.

Our theme – ‘Together We Can Make a Difference’ – is readily apparent. It is evidenced by the tireless work of the foundation staff and the many hours donated by countless volunteers. Midcentury modern remains the gold standard for pared-down, streamlined style and continues to have a profound influence on design more than 50 years later. Design Speak For the past year, a new player in the St. Louis home décor field has opened its doors to local customers, helping them keep up-to-date on the latest trends and looks in lighting, furnishings and home accessories. Wilson Lighting, a family-owned business, opened a showroom in Clayton in 2015, adding to the company’s existing showroom in suburban Kansas City and two showrooms in southwest Florida. Ladue News spoke with Shanna Shamblin Wilson about the company’s philosophy and her take on upcoming trends for 2017. What kinds of lighting and other products do you offer? When you enter any of the four Wilson Lighting showrooms, you simply won’t believe your eyes. Everywhere you look, sparkling displays of chandeliers, pendant lights, bath lights, lamps, outdoor fixtures, art, home décor – everything that you could ever dream, and all displayed so that you can envision it as it should be in your home. We believe you should enjoy the full 360-degree experience rather than just imagine how the light fixture, ceiling fan or accent side table might look in your space. Where do you source your products? Our goal is to provide the most unique collections of residential lighting and home décor. We find this with not only many of our U.S. manufacturers but by sourcing and designing products from all over the world. We also have a creative team that designs our exclusive line, called Mariana Home. You offer bespoke furnishings in addition to name brands. How do clients work with you to develop a personalized item? Our exclusive line, Mariana Home, allows us the ability to personalize an item if a customer has a

special requirement. This can be as simple as a finish to a custom piece. What product categories have shown the most growth in the last few seasons and why? There is one trend that is changing the lighting industry and affecting all categories: LED technology. Energy efficient, long-lasting and cool burning, LED is quickly changing our world. Another change that
By Connie Mitchell we see is how lighting is being used in nontraditional ways. Balanced lighting, such as two chandeliers over an elongated dining table or the use of multiple fixtures hanging in an entryway, is now very popular with homeowners. What do you see as the newest trends in lighting, furniture and home accents? What will be among the most popular items and looks for 2017? When it comes to style, consumers are seeking more-modern looks with cleaner, simpler lines, even on timeless classics. There are still traditional pieces; however, they are now designed with less scrolling and detailing. The cleaner classic trend has brought back midcentury modern, and it’s gaining momentum into 2017. Another important trend is the use of natural materials. We have become more attuned to the outdoors, and people are bringing these elements into their home. What’s the most important thing you would like our readers to know about Wilson Lighting? We are much more than a lighting store, offering accent furniture, artwork and home accessories. We display our products as a lifestyle, allowing you, the customer, the ability to see the product in a setting before it’s purchased. Need a little assistance choosing the right color, size or style? Our friendly, knowledgeable sales team is there to assist. Best of all, should you fall in love with any of the masterpieces on display, you can usually take them home with you that day!

hen 11-year-old Alec Ingram’s face lit up with joy as he walked into his baseball-inspired bedroom, Special Spaces’ volunteers instantly knew they had knocked it out of the park. The Clayton chapter of Special Spaces, formed in May to expand the nationwide nonprofit’s mission of creating dream bedrooms for kids with life-threatening medical illnesses, completed its first bedroom this fall for Ingram, who is battling bone cancer. Founded in 2004 in Knoxville, Tennessee, Special Spaces has more than 40 chapters across the country – including another chapter in St. Louis city – that have redesigned almost 1,000 children’s bedrooms. Three-quarters of the kids served are fighting some form of childhood cancer or other devastating illness, notes Jenny Diel, director of the Clayton chapter. “We believe that children facing this difficult journey need a special space for them to heal, recover and find peace – a place of hope and inspiration,” she says. To begin bringing a child’s dream bedroom to life, Diel first connects with kids in need through the local nonprofit Friends of Kids with Cancer, as well as social workers or child-life specialists at local children’s hospitals. “Once we agree that it’s a perfect fit, I schedule an appointment to meet and interview the family and child to get an in-depth understanding of the child’s wishes in order to create a unique and medically functional room,” Diel explains. “A little girl may dream of a princess room, while the parents are in critical need of storage space for medical supplies. We try and balance both those needs and wishes to create a safe and comforting space.” A Special Spaces room makeover is a unique place that only a child can imagine, from palace-inspired spaces fit for a princess to sports-fan sanctuaries, Diel says. “Anything is possible with help from our team of contractors and volunteers who come together to create that space in just a day,” she explains. As volunteers work their magic on makeover day, Friends of Kids with Cancer provides a fun slate of “day out” activities for the kids and their families. As an Anaheim Angels fan, Ingram always imagined a baseball-inspired bedroom would be a home run. Volunteers and
Special Spaces’ Clayton chapter creates bedrooms where illness-stricken kids can be kids. contractors from the St. Louis area and Washington, Missouri, came together to transform the boy’s special space. Lowe’s provided four volunteers and donated flooring, blinds, curtains, paint and wood, while Weber Brothers Construction installed custom built-in shelves, Rothman Furniture & Mattress provided a pillow-top mattress and box spring, and Beyond Storage donated a custom closet organizer. And for the most unique accents in the room, Rawlings donated bats for a custom headboard; an American flag made of red, white and blue bats and baseballs; and an Angels bat engraved with Ingram’s name and a baseball glove. Greg Kriete, owner of Kriete Woodworks, constructed the custom baseball bed. “It’s a one-of-akind work of art and truly special,” Diel says. “Alec loved it!” Diel calls Special Spaces her “soul work.” “It not only has touched the lives of the children and families who we have been blessed to serve, it has touched me and my family. My husband, John, and our 13-year-old son, Jack, always are a part of these projects, and I couldn’t do it without them.” Diel and her team (which she is looking to expand with more volunteers, an interior designer and a contractor) hope to complete at least four bedrooms next year. To raise funds for more remodels – the average cost of a bedroom makeover is $3,000 to $3,500 – the Clayton chapter’s first fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Wydown Middle School in Clayton. Two kids, including a teenage girl battling a serious condition at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, are on the Clayton chapter’s waitlist. “We are only able to do this by way of donations and sponsorships,” Diel says. “We have had some companies use their sponsorship as a team-building event, and after the experience, they become repeat volunteers and supporters. We are just so blessed to be a part of these special kids’ lives in some way to offer our support and show them we care.”

About the Show House 4388 WESTMInSTER PLACE By Sarah Kloepple | Photo by Michael Jacob
W
elcome to the 2016 Ladue News Show House, a historic property at 4388 Westminster Place in the Central West End, completed in 1897. The Georgian-style home is located in the celebrated neighborhood of Fullerton’s Westminster Place. The home was originally designed by architects George D. Barnett, John I. Haynes and Thomas P. Barnett, who famously designed the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. The home was first sold to Julia C. January on March 13, 1897, and its three stories feature seven bedrooms, two remodeled bathrooms and a remodeled kitchen. The yellow-brick exterior displays two-story Corinthian columns that flank either side of a projecting pavilion and Palladian window. As was typical for homes built in the late 19th century, most rooms include a fireplace. The central hall leads to a staircase with a landing overlooking the front lawn. A spacious office or den on the second floor is lit by large bay windows, and the third floor boasts an expansive bonus room. Plans for this home are similar to the existing houses in the neighborhood, even if their façades differ greatly. The name of the neighborhood, Fullerton’s Westminster Place, might sound familiar. According to Charles C. Savage’s book Architecture of the Private Streets of St. Louis, it contains “more residences of architectural interest than any other

comparable blocks in the city.” The homes reflect a variety of architectural trends such as Romanesque, Italian Renaissance and Colonial Georgian. The neighborhood, originally private, is named after Union Army veteran and attorney Joseph Scott Fullerton, who purchased the tract of land in 1882 from the Charter Oak Insurance Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. By 1895, 31 houses had been constructed. After Fullerton’s death two years later, his daughter, Mary, completed the neighborhood’s development, which includes the former home of famed poet T.S. Eliot. Eliot’s parents and siblings resided at 4446 Westminster Place from 1905 to 1919, though Eliot lived there only a short time before leaving St. Louis for Harvard University. Savage writes that “nearly every important architect working at the turn of the century is represented” in Fullerton’s Westminster Place. Barnett, Haynes and Barnett headed a prominent architectural firm in the city that’s credited for the design of many hotels throughout the country. Thomas Barnett even designed the Palace of the Liberal Arts for the St. Louis World’s Fair. From its inspired architects and vibrant façade to its storied neighborhood, there is bountiful history connected to 4388 Westminster Place. Ever-evolving in the 119 years since it was built, the house will evolve once more as this year’s Show House.

adue New’s annual Show House invites the community to explore one of the city’s illustrious residences as it has been reimagined by top-class designers – all in the name of a worthy cause. The tradition is made possible by Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty, the premium agency that locates the perfect abode to transform. This year proved no different. “The whole thing was a pleasant surprise, from the moment you walked up and saw the beautiful landscaping,” says owner Andy Dielmann. “The designers have taken a historic place and given it a face-lift. They’ve updated it to make it a fresher home [while enhancing] its beautiful architectural details.” The residence in question, 4388 Westminster Place in the Central West End, greets guests with a distinguished columned façade. “Walking into the foyer, you see the stunning staircase, with pineapples on top, and a striking light fixture,” Dielmann describes. “The home has a good blend of updates for today’s lifestyle while maintaining all of its historic architectural details. Each living space was a little different, but the rooms blended together [beautifully].” Guest’s reactions to the property mirror Dielmann’s. “From room to room, people were oohing and ahhing. Walking up the staircase, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing,” Dielmann shares. “They kept saying how great and awesome the space had turned out. It’s an unbelievable living space – a manageable house that allows for so many different possibilities.”

This year’s home promises insatiable design inspiration, from statementmaking wallpaper to vibrant textures and colors. The property is represented by one of Dielmann Sotheby’s top agents. “It’s just amazing the amount of good business Ted Wight does, all over the area and in all different price ranges. I’ve gotten many compliments from his sellers and buyers because he’s a true professional. Clients always are in good hands when working with Ted,” Dielmann says. The agency is serving its seventh year as the LN Show House’s presenting sponsor – a tradition for which it takes extreme pride. “We feel honored to be a part of the Show House,” Dielmann says. “The proceeds go to a wonderful charity, Cardinal Glennon. We need to give back to the community, which has been so good to us. Come out and help the hospital; they provide many wonderful benefits for children. Go and see this house, built more than 100 years ago, which has gone through a complete makeover. Meet all of the designers and see the home’s intricacies. Salute the volunteers [from both the hospital and LN] – hats off to them. The Show House is a win for the hospital and St. Louis – and we’re proud to sponsor it.” Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty, 8301 Maryland Ave., Suite 100, 314-725-0009, dielmannsothebysrealty.com

Show houSe BeNeFICIARY CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
F
or 60 years, Cardinal Glennon has maintained its mission to reveal the healing presence of God through exceptional health care services. One aspect of the Cardinal Glennon community – the Glennon Guild – is committed to helping Glennon through raising funds, volunteering in the hospital and advancing the welfare of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and its patients. The guild is the beneficiary of this year’s Ladue News Show House. “The proceeds from this year’s Show House will go toward a dialysis reverse osmosis machine, which will benefit all dialysis patients,” says Gretchen Schulte, a guild member. “To be able to bring this to the child’s bedside is the most wonderful thing.” The machine will take care of waste and extra fluids from the blood and “keep patients balanced,” Schulte says. The mobility of the machine for patients with kidney injury and renal disease will be a huge help. The guild is different from most others in that its members don’t run the hospital’s gift shop. Schulte says they used to, but running the gift shop took time away from their other efforts to serve hospital patients, as many of the guild board members volunteer at the hospital, as well. Instead, the guild gets funding through other venues like the Show House,

Glennon Card and an annual fashion show. The Glennon Guild is also supported by donations, since Cardinal Glennon is not affiliated with a university or other hospital. This is an unusual circumstance, since there’s only one other freestanding hospital in the country. Through donations, Cardinal Glennon is able to provide free medical care to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it. One year, Schulte says, the hospital gave more than $3 million in free medical care. “We’re in this to help these kids and their parents,” Schulte says. “That’s what we’re all about: helping the kids.” Schulte says being the beneficiary of events like the Ladue News Show House is a wonderful opportunity for Glennon Guild, and its members are so grateful. “We’re so blessed to have this Show House,” she says. Cardinal Glennon Medical Center provides superior medical care to more than 200,000 infants and children each year in Missouri and Illinois, throughout the country and in many other countries, whether they are able to pay for medical care or not. SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center employs more than 200 of the best pediatric experts in St. Louis practicing across 60 specialties. Cardinal Glennon, 1465 S. esigned by Channing Glover and Maria Lesko of C&M Interiors, the wide-entry foyer, grand staircase and second-floor sitting area bring the duo’s signature contemporary and minimal design aesthetic to uniquely freshen up heavy-handed built-in design elements. “We love how the home had such charm and an antique feel to it,” Lesko says, “but as our firm is, we love contemporary design and thought it would be interesting to incorporate contemporary design into antique and timeless design … A fresh and lively touch to the historic bones of the home.” A focal point upon entering the home, an original floor-toceiling mirror with an antique carved-wood frame reflects the grand staircase on the opposite wall – its wide handrails, thick spindles and newel posts topped with whimsical carved wood pineapples leading to a landing with a set of huge, stunning front-facing windows, flooding light into the staircase and second-floor seating area. To the foyer, Glover and Lesko added an antique settee, a typical foyer feature in traditional homes for family members and guests to remove their shoes. The piece is reupholstered with

green velvet accent pillows, tying in the classic aesthetic with the designers’ modern palette. A clear-glass chandelier by Wilson Lighting lightens up the expansive entry space, making a modern statement upon entering the home. Walls on both levels and the staircase are painted in Porter Paints’ Umber Cloud, a light neutral background to give the bold accent colors a brighter pop. The staircase winds up to an open area that connects to different rooms in the home, with a dramatic Chiang Mai Dragon wall covering by Schumacher adding texture and depth to the wall opposite the secondstory railing. A central table, lounge chair and side table furnish the space, and hovering overhead is a favorite of the design pair, the sleek Spokes pendant by foscarini, which catches both sunlight by day and the electric glow by night to cast unique shadows over the staircase and seating area. ven with its large, dramatic windows and grand, high ceilings, the Show House’s dining room, according to The Great Cover-Up principal designer Teddy Karl, felt dark and dreary. Known for designing rich, traditional interiors, Karl worked with senior designer Melissa Hummel to transform the dining room into an elegant, bright, inviting space. The room features an Asian-inspired blue-and-white palette. “We wanted to see pattern-on-pattern in this space,” Karl says. Window treatments and walls are in the same print from Thibaut, making the room feel larger. The room is anchored by a hand-knotted Afghan Sultanabad rug, with deep, rich tones and dashes of blue, adding splashes of color to the blue-hued space. Shield-back chairs upholstered in a traditional cut-velvet leopard print flank a dark-mahogany table, while host-and-hostess parson-style chairs in a blue-andwhite color block provide statement seating at the table’s head and foot. The table is set with Mottahedeh’s Blue Dragon place settings. The pair also gave the home’s adjacent butler’s pantry a face-lift, lining the small space with a bit of leopard-print

wallpaper to tie it in with the reupholstered dining chairs. Audubon-style original oil paintings fill the largest wall, and a large, gilded gold-leaf pagoda mirror over the mahogany sideboard creates openness in the space. Two large Chinese-export porcelain lamps on the sideboard provide additional lighting, as well as a large, multitiered chandelier. “I think the finished product, although full of pattern, is much brighter and makes the room feel larger overall,” Karl says. “We love using pattern and texture along with color – it is definitely a ‘happy’ space.” The Great Cover-Up, 314-995-5701, greatcoverupdesign.com

Serene and Stylish LIVING Room
By Denise Kruse | Photos by Michael Jacob
Designer: Victoria Dreste of Victoria Dreste Designs

ictoria Dreste, owner and designer at the eponymous Victoria Dreste Designs, walked into the Show House with an idea in mind for the design aesthetic she wanted to pursue – her goal was to find the perfect room to bring her vision to life. “When I walked into the house and saw the living room, I knew that was the space for it – the natural light that comes in, all the beautiful details, the architectural trims and moulding, and everything that’s part of that space,” Dreste says.
64
NOVEMBER 11, 2016 | LadueNews.com
With so much forward planning, Dreste almost never deviated from her original design plan. “my concept is to take what was most likely a Victorian parlor originally and keep that concept – but update it for today’s style of living and entertaining,” Dreste says. Tall front-facing windows, covered with lustrous white window treatments, provide rich visual juxtaposition with the wall color – Havana Green, a saturated teal from Dreste’s recently debuted Victoria Dreste Signature Colors collection by Sherwin-Williams. The trim and ceiling are painted in Sherwin-
Williams Cloud, and the fireplace mantel and bookshelves are in Blazer, a deep, saturated blue – all from the designer’s own paint line. Part of Dreste’s design is transforming pieces of furniture that already exist – Dreste gave a pair of vintage French chairs a new life by painting their frames in her signature Blazer color and upholstering the seats in a fabric toile pattern by Designers Guild that Dreste describes as the “focal fabric” that brings in the deep blue-and-teal colorway on a vanilla-white background. A creamy Ethan Allen
Hastings sofa gives guests a front-row seat to the cozy fireplace, while a mirrored cabinet allows interplay between the sunlight and saturated wall color. Accent pieces in gold – a fireplace screen, table lamp, side table and ceiling light fixture – create a cohesive, high-design feel. or the Show House’s family room, Ethan Allen Retail, Inc. design center project manager Amanda Matzke, designer Robert Van De Wiele and design consultant Jan Alred toned down the historic architecture with calming touches. The walls are painted soft shades of gray, blue and green from Benjamin Moore’s Williamsburg collection. Working with the lines and features of the room, the designers included an Ethan Allen Audrey sofa with a low, curved back to reflect the curves of the room’s bay window. Matzke – who has been in the interior design

business for 10 years (eight of them with Ethan Allen) – cites her favorite piece in the redesigned room as the midcentury, waterfall-style Orchard chandelier made of Lucite rods hanging from an oval steel frame. It “dazzles with both movement and shine,” she says. Throughout the design process, the Ethan Allen trio added more eclecticism to the room, including unexpected artwork above the fireplace: an abstract giclée – which Matzke describes as “cloudlike, fresh and energetic” – rendered in shades of teal, gray
and smoky-white in a champagne-finished frame. When it came to the windows, Matzke was faced with a challenge. The trio’s original window treatment of floor-length panels proved ineffective. “One window is so close to a built-in bookcase,” Matzke says. “It did not leave room for a floor-length panel to hang correctly.” In its place, though, are mounted Hunter Douglas Solara shades. All furniture featured in the room hails from Ethan Allen, including a Sayville single cabinet, Jacob barrel chair and Zachary coffee table with a mirror-glass top.
Such French-accented furniture combines with the peaceful color palette to make for a restful and sophisticated room. Matzke is particularly excited by the room’s inviting demeanor and versatility. “We have created a space to read a book near the fireplace, have a nice conversation or work at the desk while enjoying the view of the backyard,” she says. D
avid Deatherage of David Deatherage Design might have two of the smallest spaces in this year’s Show House, but that doesn’t mean his redesign of both is any less impressive. Deatherage transformed the cozy kitchen and breakfast room into a space with rustic and modern touches. “I’m quite pleased with how everything came together,” he says. Eye-catching patterns blend together in the breakfast room, from the mesmerizing lines of the Hermès wallpaper to the stylish zebra hides covering Maison Jansen chairs and a banquette bench. A glass-topped sculptural table keeps the space visually open. Mirroring the breakfast nook’s aesthetic is the home’s original butler’s pantry. The interior is painted a deep blue, and its stainedglass doors were replaced with a laser-cut sheet metal design. The shelves are playfully decorated with kitchen accessories such as a glass coffee maker from Chemex and a striped Kate Spade canister. Although everything came together in the end, the time constraint still affected Deatherage’s installation. A large tile rug failed to arrive in time, so a smaller rug of a similar concept was used instead. Deatherage even used the room himself as he envisioned it: a small space with a wide variety of uses. “I sat at the table for lunch, used my iPad from the banquette bench, had conversations with my friend Judy, the painter,” he says. “It’s a space I enjoyed spending time in. I’m hoping visitors to the Show House can see how a small space with attention to scale and planning can be made to feel very special.” David Deatherage Design, 314-495-3719, daviddeatheragedesign.com

Calm and Collected OFFICE
By Sarah Kloepple | Photos by Michael Jacob
DeSigner: Dottie Eaton of Design Style
T
he office in this year’s Show House has been redesigned into a freeing retreat. Dottie Eaton of Design Style was inspired by Led Zeppelin’s song “Going to California.” In it, Robert Plant sings of a girl with “love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.” That free spirit was translated into Eaton’s redesign. Although the room features a small floor plan, its large bay window and high ceilings help make it feel larger. “The ceilings are 10 feet high,” Eaton says. “I wanted to draw your eye up visually to make the space feel bigger.” She achieved that by using similar paint colors, adding long curtain panels and incorporating a floor-to-ceiling flower mural from the Design Deli Decorative Paint Co. “I love the mural,” Eaton says. “It’s textural. It’s sort of aged and romantic.” A roadblock to the room’s redesign came in the form of fabric. A specific type from England failed to make the trip overseas in time. Eaton instead used Designers Guild’s Oriana-Crocus, an Italian linen of painterly and photorealistic flowers. “I love that combination,” Eaton says. “That really creates a great juxtaposition with the modern chairs.” Contemporary and vintage furnishings are mixed together in the room, from the French-style sofa to fiberglass Casala chairs and a bold desk with X-shaped legs. “I’m really happy with it,” Eaton says of the office. “I think it turned out as a space that a creative woman would enjoy.” Eaton has been in the interior design and styling business for more than 10 years, and she often draws on music, nature and art for her design inspirations.

tep inside the second bedroom in this year’s Show House, and be bathed in “moodiness.” That’s how Suzanne Tullock of Suzanne Tullock Interiors describes the tone of her redesigned space. Deep chocolate-brown walls paired with bold splashes of color make the room an exciting yet classic oasis. “It looks beautiful,” Tullock says of the bedroom. “The canopy bed turned out really nice. It’s a great focal point in the room and looks so pretty.” For Tullock, the entire process was smooth and without major disruption – although the plaster walls proved difficult at times. In the end, she was able to hang a custom abstract painting by local artist Sheppard Morose above the fireplace. “It’s one of the first things you see,” Tullock says, describing the piece as feminine and stunning. Other bright hues include framed prints with coral matting and three blue ginger jars. Two are placed on symmetrical wall brackets beside the bed, and the third rests atop a white chest. A chinoiserie theme is also woven throughout the room: The desk features Chinese fretwork, while a pagoda-style mirror adorns one of the walls. Tullock says the seat of the bay window next to the fireplace is the perfect place to crack open a good book. For a whimsical touch, Tullock hung a small birdcage beside the window. “I wanted a real bird, too, but someone talked me out of it,” she says with a laugh. Since she was young, Tullock has had a passion for anything creative and artistic. She originally went to school for nursing before going back to get a degree in interior design. She’s owned her own business for 10 years and is starting to work on commercial projects in addition to residential ones. “My designs are very bold,” she says. DeSigner: CJ Knapp of Yours by Design
“d
esigning a room is a process that starts with a vision,” CJ Knapp of Yours by design says. In the case of the show house’s master bedroom, Knapp’s vision started with the bed. Its sleek lines and neutral leather upholstery set the space’s remaining tone, and the curved headboard allows for more openness compared to a straight headboard. The finished product is a glamorous and understated space. although it might seem problematic that the room features three doors, three windows and a fireplace, Knapp knew they could become assets with the correct approach. a few signature pieces of furniture and the use of Lucite “keep the room from feeling small or getting too full,” Knapp says. The Century Furniture dalian maple storage case also uses minimum visual space, as it provides the effect of floating drawers. From the light-gray paint and the luxury bedding to the soft-filtered light from the windows, the master bedroom has a satisfying calm. “It’s a room [where] I would curl up with a fire and good book, never wanting to leave,” Knapp says. two John salozzo paintings add visual excitement: Orchid, also inspiration for the room’s overall design, and Sunrise Over Scotland. Knapp, who has been in the interior design business for more than 25 years, is excited to share the master bedroom’s mix of the traditional and the contemporary with show house guests. she dubs this redesign her favorite among her works. “The last design is always my favorite,” she says. “I pour all of my effort into it. It’s like making a cake and getting to eat it too.”

Functional and Fashionable FaMIly WORkROOM By Sarah Kloepple | Photos by Michael Jacob
DeSignerS: Tamsin Mascetti, Emily Tebb and Rachel Puryear of Tamsin Design Group
F
or Tamsin Mascetti of Tamsin Design Group, the design process is fluid, with some fine-tuning usually involved. In the family workroom of the Show House, Mascetti says she “worked to create a room that would be beautiful, comfortable [and] unique and highlight the home’s interior architecture.” The room pulls together art deco styles such as a warm pink-and-cream color scheme and Romo’s glamorous Flurry Smoked Quartz velvet fabric. The Martin Trowbridge Gallery even provided the room with a collection of blackand-white Hollywood photographs. Furnishings include an ivory-finished writing desk, a cream leather Wesley chair from Precedent Furniture and an acrylic cocktail table. Mascetti adds that the room emits a soft glow. “I love the tension created between the clean, modern lines of the furniture with the shimmering, reflective elements and the subdued color palette,” she says.

NOVEMBER 11, 2016 | LadueNews.com
Mascetti says the room came together organically – but not without a few hitches. The fireplace screen was in need of attention, and the room’s paint finish was cracked and peeling – although “a quick coat of metallic paint completely transformed it,” according to Mascetti. Overall, the space is meant to accommodate and soothe a family’s busy everyday life. “It was important to me to show visitors that having a calm, beautiful yet functional space in your home to work from is valuable,” Mascetti says. She hopes visitors of the Show House fall in love with the room and have a desire to stay. But she emphasizes the room isn’t about one single thing grabbing your attention. “It’s really about the mix of elements working together to create a room that makes people feel comfortable and want to spend time in,” she says. he home’s third-floor music room was designed by Liz McGovern and Anne Smith of June Roesslein Interiors as an airy respite from the everyday bustle of life. The pair was drawn to the room’s simple architectural features, such as a dormer window – which turned out to be the perfect spot for a window seat – angled ceiling and western-facing window overlooking a lush tree view. “You feel like you’re in a treehouse,” Smith says. Envisioning a rich backstory of an accomplished harpist taking up residence in the home, Smith and McGovern imagined a truly heavenly music room, with each element contributing to the relaxed nature of the design, from every textile and color to the functionality of each piece of furniture. Smith and McGovern wrapped the space in a dreamy palette of soft blues and neutrals, blending seamlessly with the feel of the third-floor landing the pair also designed. Walls, ceiling and trim are all painted in Sherwin-Williams’ creamy-white Casablanca, using a satin eggshell finish on the walls and ceiling and a semigloss on the trim, providing textural depth without the visual interruption of contrasting colors. The room is anchored by a hand-knotted round Indo-Peshwar rug featuring soft blues and creams, which was also the source for the space’s color inspiration. A custom-built window seat below the dormer window features plush throw pillows that beckon visitors to relax while providing additional seating to open up the space for music appreciation and conversations. A curved chaise lounge contributes an air of luxury, with a crocodile-embossed leather drink cart by Ralph Lauren not only serving as a statement piece but also setting the tone for the usefulness of the room. “It’s a respite from the hurried lifestyle we all lead,”

An Artful bOnuS ROOM By Denise Kruse | Photos by Michael Jacob
Designer: Gigi Lombrano of Gigi Lombrano Interiors
O
riginally submitting a design for a second-floor sitting room/den, Gigi Lombrano of Gigi Lombrano Interiors was instead given the Show House’s huge third-floor bonus room, a two-rooms-in-one scenario with an unusual layout. Even for Lombrano, a Show House veteran, the design challenge was daunting. Lombrano decided to take her original proposal and expand it to cover the bonus room. “I wanted to create a unified space, so I decided to divide and conquer,” Lombrano says. “I had to designate different zones and uses for each room, and from there, create a usable, workable space that would highlight the best features of the rooms and accommodate all the quirks!” Lombrano divided the room aesthetically into a lounge area and study area, tying both together by repeating certain key elements within both rooms, bringing her Dorothy Draper-meets-Mary MacDonald vision to life – light and fresh with modern, daring accents and artwork intermingled with a little Hollywood glam. An emerald-colored Lillian August chest was one of the springboards of Lombrano’s design – a fall trend she cites is a neutral ground with bold pops of color, brought to life with this standout piece, along with Lombrano’s use of a background rug in yellow (Lombrano’s prediction for the new darling for accent colors), a pair of red chairs and a blue velvet ottoman with gold legs.

NOVEMBER 11, 2016 | LadueNews.com
A zebra-print Queen Anne armchair, topped with a crown, is another bold, standout element in the room and a Lombrano favorite. “I think it’s smart-looking,” she says. A Greek key design (“I’m partial to a neoclassical motif,” Lombrano says) is repeated throughout both areas in the room – in the chest, desk, throws and pendant – lending a bit of thematic continuity to a room rich with bold accent pieces. Lombrano cites the artwork as one of the main elements of the space – working with Carolyn Miles from the Atrium Gallery, Lombrano chose nearly 20 pieces of artwork to bring a gallery element to the space, mixing contemporary art with classic botanicals. “Quite frankly, the art could stand on its own,” Lombrano says. “The range of art is really extraordinary – nothing was off limits!” Gigi Lombrano Interiors, 314-707-7291

Linger in the THIRD-FLOOR LANDING By Denise Kruse | Photos by Michael Jacob
Designers: Anne Smith and Liz McGovern of June Roesslein Interiors
T
he back staircase to the third floor of the Show House almost comes as a surprise – after beautiful, well-appointed bedrooms and an office space on the second floor, the home continues upward with an almost-hidden stair passage to even more rooms ideal for entertaining and relaxing. Before visiting the third-floor rooms, though, visitors are invited into a landing designed by Anne Smith and Liz McGovern of June Roesslein Interiors. With only a small rectangular transition space, flanked on all sides by doors to various rooms, the design duo saw an opportunity not only to dress up the space, allowing it to flow stylistically with the great design work from room to room, but also to add furniture to strategically direct traffic flow. For this, Smith and McGovern used a circular burl-veneered quartered top-and-quatrefoil-base table to anchor the space, preventing traffic jams in and out of the third-floor rooms by behaving as a pedestrian roundabout. Under the circle table is a beautiful Mahal design, a hand-knotted rectangular Indo-Peshwar rug, which sets the tone with soothing shades of tan, blue and

cocoa – a color palette preview for the home’s dreamy music room, also designed by Smith and McGovern. The table holds a curated arrangement of vases and books and is lit from above by a chandelier featuring polished brass original to the house. Walls are painted in Lotus Pod, a soft, soothing neutral by Sherwin-Williams. To make up for the lack of space for furnishings in the landing, Smith and McGovern took advantage of available wall space, adding both an oversized antique gold-leaf mirror and bronzed metallic-gold rosettes to the walls. Autumn-Perfect laNdSCapiNG
By Denise Kruse | Photos by Michael Jacob
Designer: Jim Graeler of Chesterfield Valley Nursery
T
he landscaping for the Show House was a gut rehab; outdated, overgrown landscaping that didn’t seem to echo the stately elegance of the home was cleared out so that Jim Graeler and the team at Chesterfield Valley Nursery could create a cohesive look that would give visitors a preview of the home’s warmth and grandeur. “We love challenges, so this was a lot of fun putting together,” Graeler says. The design team enhanced the existing outdoor façade by adding lush evergreens, such as green giant arborvitae trees and blue maid holly. Japanese maples, hydrangeas and fall mums add a touch of brightness to traditional elegant boxwood. For potential future occupants, Graeler already has a vision for a reimagined backyard area – a warm, cozy space that could include a fireplace and small kitchen and grill area. Well-Appointed powder room
By Liz Miller | Photo by Michael Jacob
Designer: Kristen Holton of Arch Design, Artwork & Framing
A
rch design, Artwork & Framing, one of the sponsors of this year’s Show House, designed the powder room (and also contributed artwork for two more bathrooms in the home). ralph Lauren’s Yacare Crocodile wallpaper in ebony adds darkly dramatic flair to the powder room, as does the black-and-gold light fixture above the sink, which plays off the blackand-gold framed mirror below it. Arch made the custom mirror with a Larson-Juhl frame to round out the room’s elegant and exotic tone. Select pieces were sourced from dillard’s, including the waste basket and tissue holder. A black crocodile accessory box from The Great Cover-Up echoes the wallpaper, with complementary artwork and frames to tie the room together. Kristen Holton, owner of Arch design, says the images used in the framed artwork were purchased from etsy and then printed on canvas with a suede matte, gold fillet and gold bamboo frame. St. Louis-based JORD Watches turns high-quality wood into bespoke wristwatches.
M
aple, koa and bamboo are materials that might come up while shopping for flooring or furniture, but with St. Louis-based JORD Watches, they’re the main component of fashion-focused wristwatches. Launched in 2013, JORD owner and chief design officer Salman Shah says the brand was developed after he saw – and loved – a similar product overseas. But on further inspection, he didn’t think the quality was where it should be. Shah, who worked in digital marketing, saw an opportunity – and his career took a “timely” turn. “I have always been a big wristwatchwearer myself and [have] had an eye for unique timepieces that I believed would get noticed,” Shah says. “At first, it seemed a bit out there, after the majority of our work revolved around technology and online marketing – but it was a decision we made and, since, have never looked back.” He and his small team took the plunge into watches. Shah says he spent some eight months developing JORD’s first designs and samples. Clearly he was onto something from the start: The first design, the Dover Series featuring automatic movement, is still one of the brand’s most popular styles. “This was a project that has taught all of us so much,
94
november 11, 2016 | LadueNews.com
and myself a lot about the wristwatch industry and the build of a quality timepiece,” he says. The St. Louis native and Missouri State University graduate didn’t bring a fashion background to the table – his undergraduate degree is in business administration, and he has a master’s in health care administration – but was dedicated to the project. The endeavor has become a family affair, as Shah enlisted the help of his brothers, Amir Shah and Osmaan Shah, with technology development and marketing. The company’s collection of watches includes both men’s and women’s timepieces in a range of looks, from retro to sporty to classic. And it’s only fitting that each comes with its own wooden box, offering customers a preview of what’s waiting inside. Down to the pillow the watch is wrapped around, each aspect is given ample attention. “JORD watches are incredibly lightweight, easily dressed up or down, and truly unique when it comes to every single timepiece we develop,” Salman Shah says. Although he says the target market is ages 25 to 35, JORD has been a hit with teens, seniors and everyone in between. “Wood has very unique characteristics, and no two watches will ever look the same,” he continues. “Depending on the time of year, we can see different wood shades, grain patterns and tones that offer each customer a different experience.”
JORD watches range from the mid-$100s to the high $300s and come in both battery-powered and automatic self-winding options. A variety of face shapes and sizes is available, in addition to face and band color options. Woods featured in the watches include bamboo, ebony, purpleheart, koa, zebrawood – the most popular, likely because of its wider grain patterns, says Salman Shah – rosewood, maple and sandalwood. These unique timepieces have garnered the brand more than 63,000 Instagram followers and a loyal band of bloggers highlighting their wooden styles online. “JORD was created and backed by the fact that a wristwatch nowadays is not worn for the functionality, but more for fashion,” Salman Shah says. “All of us now have cellphones that we check the time on, and our current generation wears [watches] for the fashion and style.” Although all JORD watches share some major similarities, this dedication to fashion is a clear component, and each design appears truly unique from the others. “One very cool fact about our watches is that an individual’s natural oils will continue to soak into the wood over time and create a unique characteristic as it [forms a] patina,” Salman Shah explains. “This allows for each customer to grow with their watch and also to treat it like a unique piece of art [or] like a fine wine or cigar.” With winter on the horizon, these watches would be a good staple offering for the gifting season. The company’s holiday promotions will begin on Black Friday, according to Salman Shah, and the holiday season will coordinate with some new JORD products. “We will be launching two new models of our watches and introducing our new humidor watch box,” he says. “Also, we will
be introducing our engraving service that will be for the back plates of the watches and our cedar boxes.” The vast majority of JORD’s business is done online, explains Salman Shah, but local shoppers can find the venture’s products in four St. Louis-area locations: La Ville, Urban Matter, Huelsman Jewelers Inc. and Don Henefer Jewelers. “This has been truly a ride that I could have never imagined, and being able to do it alongside my brothers and several close friends has been a dream come true,” Salman Shah says. S moky Golden Beet Soup With Roasted Garlic Cream
E
Story, recipe and photography by Sherrie Castellano
ither greatly loved or deeply hated, standard red beets often are described as too earthy, harsh or intense. (Golden beets, a cousin of the reds, are slightly less bold and earthy, featuring a mellower, sweet and somewhat mild flavor.) Soup, unlike beets, is generally loved by all. It can soothe your soul, lift your spirits and make the cold go away – if only for a moment – as a bowl of comfort, versatile enough to be a snack, a starter or even a full meal. In that light, with just a little obvious finesse, beets can become bright and vibrant. More specifically, even if you’re not yet a fan of the vegetable, this smoky golden beet soup recipe may change your mind. This recipe was developed with flexibility in mind as we head into the holidays. The soup’s gorgeous orange hue and festive toppings make it a suitable option for your Thanksgiving table; alternately, forgo the toppings and sip it at work for a nourishing, seasonally appropriate, not-so-sad desk lunch. The beet’s natural sweetness is first released in the roasting stage. Its gustatory depth is enhanced with the addition of sautéed mirepoix (a mix of chopped onions, carrots and celery), which is blended with smoked paprika to round out the flavor. The roasted garlic cream shouldn’t be excluded, in that it adds just the right amount of acid and umami to the soup.

Lady Sybil
and the Cunningham Family By Robyn Dexter
Once upon a time, Lael
Cunningham wanted a cat. She really wanted a cat. She tried to convince her mom, Janel Cunningham, that she was ready to take care of one, so she drew up a contract of all the things she would do to take care of one. Last Christmas, Lael Cunningham’s gift was her contract back – notarized and signed by her mom. Janel Cunningham says that her 11-year-old daughter was very specific about what she wanted in her cat, so the pair took to the internet to find the perfect furry friend. There, they found pictures of a kitten named Coco Puff, who was available from St. Louis Pet Rescue. Former foster mom Lisa Ucko says that Coco Puff was orphaned at a very young age and required bottle feeding. She and her littermates, Cheerio and Cap’n Crunch, were found in a south St. Louis yard. “Coco Puff really struggled,” Ucko says. “We really thought she was going to be miniature forever, and she was plagued by parasites. With around-the-clock care, Coco Puff was able to overcome her rough start and thrive.” The Cunninghams have had Coco Puff for almost a year. She was renamed Lady Sybil, after Lael Cunningham’s favorite Downton Abbey character. Janel Cunningham says Lady Sybil is “cuddly, but only when she wants to be” and is very playful. She loves to play fetch with plastic shower curtain rings. “She’s pretty puppylike because she’ll follow you from room to room,” Janel Cunningham says. “She’s an excellent first pet.” When Lael Cunningham gets home from school
every day, she does all the things she agreed to do in her contract in order to take care of Lady Sybil. Janel Cunningham says the cat allows her daughter to be more playful, and they even do dance moves together. One of Lady Sybil’s funny habits is her behavior when someone either leaves or comes home. Janel Cunningham says the cat will come “tearing down the hallway” to the garage door and run up into her cat tree. “At first, we were worried about her getting out into the garage, but that’s not her objective,” she says. “She just wants to watch you come and go.” Lael Cunningham loves to snuggle with her cat, and the two will curl up while she is watching TV or reading. Janel Cunningham works shift work, so she likes being able to come home to an animal when her daughter is at her grandparents’. “I don’t feel the same kind of loneliness I did before,” she says. “[Lady Sybil] is always waiting at the door.”

BRUCE WATSON FREEDOM SUMMER A riveting account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history. In his critically acclaimed history “Freedom Summer,” award- winning author Bruce Watson presents powerful testimony about a crucial episode in the American civil rights movement. During the sweltering summer of 1964, more than seven hundred American college students descended upon segregated, reactionary Mississippi to register black voters and educate black children. On the night of their arrival, the worst fears of a race-torn nation were realized when three young men disappeared, thought to have been murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. Taking readers into the heart of these remarkable months, Freedom Summer shines new light on a critical moment of nascent change in America.

eronica McDonnell believes that weaving character values like honesty, responsibility, respect, leadership, teamwork and caring into schools’ curricula makes a difference in the academic achievement of children. For her dedication to character building, the Friends of CharacterPlus will honor her on Nov. 18 with the Sandy McDonnell Dedication to Character Award, named after her late father-in-law, Sanford McDonnell. McDonnell has been a member of the organization’s board and founded its Friends support group in 2005. “Character education is so important,” she says. “It is vital to start teaching people at a young age that what you do has an effect on others. Kids must learn that
academic scores and decreasing interruptions in the classroom,” she says. Veronica McDonnell started Friends of CharacterPlus, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, to “help increase the awareness of the CharacterPlus program,” she says. “The Friends group consists of community volunteers who help raise money for the programs to help instill positive character traits in our youth.” According to McDonnell, Friends’ current 21-member board got its start by doing awareness days in her home. Health and wellness form another huge pillar in McDonnell’s life. A registered dietitian for 24 years, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in general dietetics from Fontbonne College (now Fontbonne
Foundation, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Community Music School of Webster University and National Kidney Foundation. Her most recent event was the opening for the “Little Black Dress” exhibition at the Missouri History Museum. “Veronica has that special flair, and our opening event was a big splash,” says Gwendolyn Packnett, vice president of Women of Achievement, who served on the committee with McDonnell. McDonnell also has served as a trustee and member of the Friends’ Board of the Saint Louis Art Museum, a trustee of the Missouri History Museum, a board member of Missouri Baptist Medical Center and the chair of its foundation. She was honored with Fontbonne University’s Founders
bullying is not acceptable behavior. They need to realize that it can have harmful effects on people for years. “My father-in-law was a great proponent of character education and started the organization that became CharacterPlus 28 years ago. His dedication sparked my interest in promoting character building in schools, as well. He saw common courtesies going by the wayside.” During his tenure as chairman of aerospace company McDonnell Douglas, Sanford McDonnell helped focus national attention on the importance of ethics in all aspects of life. He chose character education in schools K-12 as his retirement career. “He said that character education must begin in schools, with our children,” Veronica McDonnell says. “Values learned there will then be passed on. He felt that teaching basic principles during routine classes and emphasizing we instead of I would make all the difference.” Today, character education is integrated into the curricula of 70 school districts in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas. “This has affected 300,000 children, increasing
University) and completed a postgraduate dietetic internship with the Department of Veterans Affairs. She has practiced as a renal dietitian for most of those years, caring for patients with kidney disease. “When I was younger, I saw family members who were ill who were helped by dietitians,” she says. “This had an immense impact on my life. People are living longer today because of the new advances in dialysis and the ways we are able to help them.” McDonnell has held professional executive board positions with the Eastern Missouri and Metro East Council for Renal Nutrition and the Missouri Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; with the latter, she chaired its statewide conferences in 2010 and 2012 and received a Volunteer of the Year award in 2010. Named a Woman of Achievement in 2013, McDonnell spends countless hours each week with volunteer commitments that make a difference in the lives of others. Both creative and driven, she has chaired events for the Missouri Baptist Healthcare
Award for Distinguished Service and Dedication to the Community in 2007. When she isn’t volunteering or working, McDonnell plays tennis, loves watching baseball and hockey, and spends time with her nieces and nephews. Married since 2000, she and her husband, Randy, an aeronautical engineer, live in Frontenac with their three dogs. “We have two rescue dogs and our lap dog, who doesn’t like laps,” she says. “Randy and I met at a restaurant in Clayton on a night when I didn’t really plan or want to go out. That proves you can expect great things when you least expect them.” She says her heroes are “my mom, who is the glue that keeps our family a unit” and “my husband, for the support he has shown me. I would not be able to be an effective volunteer or volunteer as much as I do if not for Randy. He is an inspiration to me.”

n October, a new, authentic Asian restaurant opened in the Delmar Loop: VietNam Style. The concept comes from husband-and-wife Saigon natives Yun Vu and Thao Truong. Truong, a 26-year-old MBA student at Maryville University, moved to St. Louis at the age of 18. “The reason I wanted to start a restaurant is because we visited Vietnam every summer, and there were always so many new things to try – things you can’t find in restaurants here,” she says. “People say the food we cook makes them feel like they are in Vietnam, and that makes me so happy.” The two-story restaurant fills the space previously occupied by Cabana on the Loop, which seats up to 80

guests. To match her logo, which takes the form of a lotus blossom and its leaves, Truong painted the dining room in vibrant pink and green shades, accentuated by metallic-silver décor. Truong’s mother, seasoned cook Thanh Nguyen, worked with the young couple to develop the menu, contributing recipes including her pho. While Truong acts as the restaurant’s manager, Vu, who previously worked as a pastry chef in Vietnam, serves as head chef. The restaurant’s signature dish is its bò né dac biet, or house special Vietnamese sizzling steak. Thinly sliced cuts of filet mignon come served on a hot, cow-shaped skillet with a sunny-side-up egg, French pork-liver pâté, grilled pork patties and sardines in tomato sauce
By Mabel Suen – supplemented with a side salad and baguette. According to Truong, all beef used in the restaurant’s dishes is filet mignon – something that gives the restaurant its unique style. Guests will find it in everything from steak platters to noodle dishes. From the appetizer menu, choose from items including egg rolls, shrimp or grilled-beef spring rolls and “Viet Style Cheese Wrap” – fried cheese puffs filled with cream cheese, crab meat and quail egg. In addition to a variety of steak and pho options, VietNam Style offers vermicelli-noodle bowls, banh mi and rice platters such as com tam thap cam with pork chops, shredded pork skin, Vietnamese quiche and a sunny-side-up egg.

& A Show Cuddles
Story: Eve spends her entire life in her squalid little room. Her only contact with the outside world comes from her older sister, Tabby, who has a job that pays the mortgage, utilities and food. Tabby visits Eve regularly, sometimes even allowing her to suck blood from her arm – because Eve, as a vampire, needs blood for sustenance and survival. Eve remains in her room, living by a set of 13 rigid rules established by Tabby – one of which states that a vampire can die only by sunlight, decapitation or a wooden stake driven through its heart. “That would kill most anyone,” theorizes Eve. Eve passes her days reciting fairy tales, looking forward to Tabby’s arrival. Tabby has placed two boxes in Eve’s room, which serve as her younger sister’s toilet. Tabby also occasionally shackles the teenager when she thinks Eve needs to be punished. As depressing as this life is, it suddenly worsens when Tabby grows weary of her own lonely existence and searches for something better. If she finds it, will she leave her captive sister behind? What will become of Eve? Highlights: Just a tad late for Halloween, Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble’s (SATE) “Season of Adaptation” continues with a top-notch rendering of a macabre, ghastly and fascinating tale written by English playwright Joseph Wilde. Cuddles is smart, savage and shocking in both its dialogue and SATE’s superb production, which features finely tuned direction by Joe Hanrahan and a pair of stunning performances by Rachel Tibbetts and Ellie Schwetye. Other Info: Wilde’s one-act debut drama originally was produced in England in 2011 and later staged in New York in 2015. At 90 minutes, Cuddles is taut, tense and tingling with a raw suspense that settles into one’s skin like flesh-eating bacteria. The set designed by Bess Moynihan, like the New York version, features an array of tattered newspapers adorning both the front and back of the stage, encased in a plastic sheath.
By Mark Bretz Liz Henning’s costume design sharply contrasts the slick business attire favored by Tabby (essentially in black), while Eve is confined primarily to a soiled, sordid gown with just a momentary uplift from a dress purchased spontaneously for her by Tabby. Hanrahan heightens the tension by making adroit use of the entire stage, which expands beyond Eve’s repressed living quarters to the once-genteel house where Tabby roams. In that more spacious realm, Tabby speaks directly to a subordinate at work whom she handles in vengeful fashion to even a score leveled against her late father or to converse with a nice young man she meets somewhere and invites back to her lair. For Tibbetts and Schwetye, who continue to elevate the caliber of their work, Cuddles (the title comes from Eve’s requests for hugs, etc., for emotional salvation) may be their best efforts to date. Tibbetts is wild-eyed and feral from the start, looking antithetical to the refined, upper-class English diction she uses to recite her favorite fairy tale, hair unkempt, gown soiled, remnants of blood spattered about. She portrays the younger sister effectively enough to evoke considerable sympathy and sorrow for Eve’s plight despite her appearance. Schwetye, in turn, stylishly shows the audience a Tabby who is steely and deceptively strong on the surface. Slowly and carefully, she reveals the older sister’s long-standing psychological scars and the damage wrought by too close proximity to human vampires that have sucked resistance from her soul. Cuddles is a chilling monster story made all the more riveting by the superior work of its performers. See it and you’ll quickly add it to your own personal list of what goes bump in the night.

beyond. Typically, children “melt down” when they can’t communicate needs and concerns to the adults in their lives. In that regard, Calm-Down Time should be valuable in any home from a child’s earliest ages. During nonstressful times, it should allow parents (who, in particular, should take advantage of the “Tips for Parents and Caregivers” on the inside back cover) to open conversations about feelings, experiences and behaviors. Otherwise, Ready Readers volunteers will be gifting 3- to 5-year-olds with the delightful Squirrel’s Busy Day by Lucy Barnard. In Barnard’s story, a myriad of forest animals want
ust as St. Louisans are resetting all of their timepieces, Ready Readers recommends Calm-Down Time by Elizabeth Verdick with illustrations by Marieka Heinlen (a copy of which all of the program’s 2-year-olds and their teachers will receive). This sweet, unpretentious board book depicts toddlers talking about feelings. The colors, patterns, visual textures and friendly-faced kids in the illustrations should attract all children, and those 2 years old and older should enjoy reading along as they connect words and pictures. Most important, this book should provide a path to help children recognize, name and deal with feelings: “Sometimes I’m sad. Sometimes I’m mad! Sometimes I start to scream and shout. I want to get my feelings out.” For handling troubling feelings, Calm-Down Time recommends taking deep breaths, finding a quiet space to take a break, giving oneself a hug or asking to be held by an adult. Empowering children from a young age to name and understand their feelings and providing them with the tools to help them control their own behavior can help lessen the tantrums common to the toddler years and
By Sheila Oliveri to play with their friend Squirrel on a late autumn day. Unfortunately, Squirrel’s too busy gathering acorns to put in the red wagon he’s pulling behind him. Barnard’s friendly, colorful animals should delight children, and those who look closely should find little surprises hidden on many pages. Squirrel’s Busy Day abounds with activities to keep children involved while reading it, including naming and describing animals, making animal noises, counting and predicting, and repeating sound-imitative phrases like “crash, crack, huff, puff” scattered throughout its pages in large, bold print. Regarding Barnard’s book, parents oughtn’t neglect discussing the important concepts of friendship, empathy, and teamwork that bring a happy ending for all involved.

t’s hard to believe that there are less than two months left in 2016, let alone that the holidays are right around the corner. Luckily, Truffles Butchery can help families prepare for the holiday season by lifting some of the stress off of cooking. Butchery, an extension of Truffles restaurant in Ladue, offers a variety of Thanksgiving packages. Whether customers need a full Thanksgiving meal, just a few sides or some smoked turkey breast, they can find exactly what they’re looking for locally. Butchery executive chef Steven Caravelli says Butchery offers local turkeys from California, Missouri, which are “supertasty.” “A lot of people are preordering their turkeys again for this year because of how popular they were last year,” Caravelli says. Along with turkey, Butchery offers Brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pecan and pumpkin pies. All are made in-house. Caravelli encourages customers to get their Thanksgiving orders in early, citing a Nov. 16 deadline with a Nov. 22 or 23 pickup. “Thanksgiving was probably our busiest week ever,” he says. “Whether you need a full meal or just a few parts of the meal, we can help.” Caravelli says there’s another aspect Butchery offers that can help take the stress off the holiday season.
118
“We also have our daily prepared meals going strong,” he says. “We offer many options not just for the holidays, but for a quick meal. During the holidays, we have a lot of things ready to pick up fast, like barbecue, that can take some pressure off the cook who’s already going to be doing enough work.” Aleks Jovanovic, general manager and wine director at Truffles Butchery, notes the selection of seafood the stores also carry. “Not many people realize the full array of the seafood program through Butchery,” he says. “Butchery has access to the freshest seafood in town. Anything we don’t sell in Butchery during the day is sold through the restaurant in the evening, so you never see food that’s a few days old in our display cases.” Though they don’t advertise it much, the stores also offer catering by request. “We can do anything from a simple sandwichstyle office party to fine foods and higher-end items in people’s homes or at larger events,” Jovanovic says. “Anything we offer year-round is available as a catering option.” Regardless of what you’re looking for to feed your guests this holiday season, Truffles Butchery can help. “For anything customers may want, it’s a simple phone call away,” Jovanovic says. 9202 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-567-7258, todayattruffles.com
