LN Online Just last month, owner/proprietor and artist L.A. his month, a St. Louis tradition returns to street corners. Volunteers with the Old Newsboys campaign will be donning their green aprons and selling a special edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in support of more than 100 children’s charities. “The mission of Old Newsboys is simple,” says former board member Mike Walsh. “It is to raise funds and awareness for children in the St. Louis region that are at risk, served by charities and organizations that don’t necessarily gather national recognition. We support charities that support children that are lacking the fundamental things we take for granted.” The campaign receives grant requests throughout the year, and with the donations from Old Newsboys Day and other campaign initiatives, a committee allocates the funds to these charities. “The need is there – these are things that aren’t funded by the big groups,” says Paola Stange, co-founder of Stange Law Firm. Close to 150 charities are supported by Old Newsboys, and the organization works directly with each, in some cases giving them necessary items directly, rather than simply writing a check. Stange and Walsh agree that it’s gratifying to watch Old Newsboys get involved on an individual level in a way larger organizations cannot. “We’re not just giving them money – we are giving them the items that they request,” Stange says. When the charities do receive a check, they in turn provide a receipt so Old Newsboys can see how the money was put to use. “It’s superimportant to us that the money is going to what they need.” “For some of [these charities], the dollars we donate become part of their budget,” adds Walsh. “They are able to turn the gift from the community into services for those in need.” After the COVID-19 pandemic caused the fundraiser to be virtual-only in 2020 – in order to ensure the safety of both the volunteers and the general public – Old Newsboys Day will once again be out in full force on
Thursday, Nov. 18, from 6 to 9 a.m., continuing a tradition more than 65 years old. “We are really excited to get back to the foundation and the visibility of this organization on that Thursday,” Walsh says, adding that volunteering with Old Newsboys has been a tradition in his family since its inception. “I would watch [my dad] walk out the door in the dead of winter all bundled up, going to sell newspapers for families. It’s been part of our household.” And you can join in the tradition and help Old Newsboys serve metro area children, not only by purchasing a paper on Old Newsboys Day but also by volunteering for future events, such as its polo match, held each fall. The organization’s website has information on how to get involved on an individual level or through becoming a business leader, as well as how to fill out a request form for a local charity in need. “You can have your whole company volunteer,” Stange points out. “It’s very rewarding. It becomes something we share with others to support the community – it’s a St. Louis tradition.”

KIDS MD
Burgeoning Bibliophiles By Dr. Joseph Kahn
M
y wife and I are cleaning out our extra bedrooms and trying to determine what to do with the hundreds of books we have purchased for our grandkids. Our five grandchildren loved reading these simple books when they were younger, but now reading seems to be a chore for them. What happened? Explanations I’ve heard include “Reading is boring,” “I don’t have time to read,” “It’s not fun” and “It’s too hard.” Learning to read can be a challenge for some, and books can be intimidating. Schools emphasize performance and not the pursuit of reading for leisure. Everyone, including children, uses electronics for communication in the modern age. We are now accustomed to using our devices for quick and easily digestible bits of information. So how can we encourage our children and grandchildren to read? A few tried-and-true tactics to try include:
Let your child see you reading for pleasure. Be a model. Children learn by mimicking their parents’ behavior, so let them mimic your reading. Read the newspaper or a magazine – as you’re doing now. Let them see that tablets and TVs are not the only source of entertainment and information. If you read books or news on your devices, make sure your children know that’s what you’re doing. Talk about what you read. This will demonstrate to your children that reading has value. Read aloud to your child. Bedtime stories have significance, as does reading out loud together at any time. Read to and with your child. Start reading to your baby, and continue through the early school years. Even as they learn to read on their own, the time you spend reading to them is invaluable. Some children don’t seem to embrace reading because it’s often mandated at school, and they’re told what to read. Kids like control
Uncommon people achieve uncommon things. And when they partner, anything is possible.
over their lives just as much as we do. Let your child choose what to read, but set the expectation that he or she must choose something. Take a field trip and go book “shopping” at the library. Keep books around, in sight, and readily available at home, in the car, on vacation and wherever you are. A love of reading is one of the greatest and easiest gifts you can give your child. As the holiday season approaches, be sure that books are under the tree.

BUSINESS NOTES
Fresh Focus By Drew Gieseke
A
longtime local grocery store staple recently debuted a major refresh – and the renovation could serve as a sign of what’s to come in the industry. Schnucks’ Kirkwood location has been a fixture in the metro area since 1954. In early October, Schnuck Markets completed a full remodel of the location – a project that began this past spring. The update features everything from a full-scale food hall to greater emphasis on local brands and products – all of which was inspired by the company’s valued customers. “At Schnucks, we’re always looking to try new things, and we will continue to evolve as our customers’ preferences evolve,” says Paul Simon, communications lead with Schnuck Markets. “Our emphasis on local products connects us with the many communities throughout the areas we serve and introduces our customers to local treasures that can be found right in their own backyard.” Aside from a fresh new look inside and out, one of the most noticeable changes from the remodel is the food hall. The company partnered with local favorites Seoul Taco, The Shaved Duck and The Greek Kitchen to offer customers a robust mix of protein, flavors and healthy options. Schnucks Kirkwood also continues to focus on fresh choices and grab-and-go options. In April 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company launched a program supporting local restaurants by selling their grab-and-go meals in the company’s metro area stores. This approach has been expanded in the Kirkwood location, alongside a new produce section, fresh kombucha on tap and a self-service nut butter station. “Our communities depend on local businesses, and they depend on us to get their goods into the hands of customers,” Simon explains. “We have made the commitment to invest in these businesses by offering their products in our stores.”
18 November 12, 2021 | LadueNews.com
Schnucks Kirkwood also features an extension of the company’s partnership with Arch Apparel. The local merchandise company offers St. Louisinspired streetwear that shoppers can purchase during their grocery visits. Although Simon says that there aren’t plans to expand the food hall concept to other area locations, Schnuck Markets isn’t ruling out the
option for new stores and upcoming remodels. “Now that the remodel is complete, we’re proud to bring the Kirkwood area and our customers a modern store but with the same focus on great customer service,” he concludes. LIMBER UP By Connie Mitchell

n 1999, Jorden Gold was just visiting with his grandfather. As the two spent time together, Gold started gently stretching his bedridden grandfather’s limbs. Although the stretching seemed to feel good, it accomplished something even more important: It helped Gold’s grandfather regain mobility. “He was able to walk and eventually even dance,” says Tony Zaccario, president and CEO of Stretch Zone, the business that grew out of Gold’s experience. Although not everyone has such dramatic changes in physical ability, doctors and physical therapists have long touted the benefits of stretching, including improved flexibility of muscles and joints, decreased chance of injury and better athletic performance. “Jorden’s idea was that everyone’s grandfather needed this – in fact, everyone could benefit from this – and he wanted to take it to the masses,” Zaccario says. The difference between the Stretch Zone modality and yoga or stretch classes at a

gym is the use of what’s known as “practitionerassisted stretching.” In one-on-one sessions, clients lie on a table while trained practitioners use a patented strapping system to help hold and stretch specific muscles. “The straps act as a second pair of hands for the practitioner and really help isolate the muscle groups,” Zaccario says. He adds that the technique allows clients to remain relaxed during the session, which is designed with individual goals in mind. “We work to help reprogram the nervous system’s stretch reflex with gradual, repetitive stretches,” Zaccario explains. Gold first took his stretching modality to professional sports teams before opening storefront locations for the general public. The business began opening franchises in 2017 and now has more than 400 locations, with at least three new locations opening each week through the rest of 2021, Zaccario says.
The Chesterfield Stretch Zone is owned by former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, together with his wife, Michelle, and brother-inlaw, Joe Morrisey. “Chesterfield is a Midwestern town with lots of activity, from golf courses and country clubs that appeal to an older crowd [to] colleges that serve younger generations, so it was important that we introduce a company that connects with individuals of all backgrounds and athletic abilities,” Michelle Shildt says. Zaccario anticipates additional Stretch Zone locations will open in the metro area eventually. “We want people to be aware of the power stretching has to improve your life, from athletic performance to performing everyday tasks to sleeping better because your muscles aren’t tight or cramping,” he says. “I’d encourage everyone to give it a try and see for themselves.”

A Blissful
Boost By Amanda Dahl | Photos courtesy of The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis

W
ith an ongoing pandemic, flu season, returning to school or work, and wondering how to celebrate the holiday season this year, just how high is your anxiety? Although it can’t offer a cure for any virus, The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis may have something to help you contend with stress and enhance the way your body functions. It’s called The Remedy. “People are looking for alternative ways to stay healthy,” says Casey Schafer, spa supervisor and lead therapist. “This service focuses on being anti-inflammatory. The main purpose is to stimulate your lymph – lymph nodes, lymphocytes, lymph vessels – all through the body. Anything that no longer needs to be in your body, [the goal is] to help get it out.” The Remedy works from feet to face. Schafer explains that, by starting with the feet, the stimulation helps to circulate lymph while boosting production of endorphins. A massage therapist applies a detox clay featuring magnesium and sourced from Utah’s deserts to the soles of your feet, then wraps them in heated towels. “Your feet are the most porous part of your body,” Schafer says, noting that magnesium is included in most steps of the service. “They absorb things easiest and fastest.” Low levels of magnesium can be linked to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal diseases and osteoporosis, reports the National Institutes of Health, while extremely high dosages can lead to unpleasant side effects. A balance, though, can be found. A 2009 medical study on “therapeutic uses of magnesium,” published in the clinical journal American Family Physician, states that 75 percent of Americans aren’t meeting their recommended dietary allowance of magnesium. “Magnesium is used in over 300 [metabolic] processes in
your body,” Schafer explains – a fact confirmed by the study. “We need as much of it, so that we are functioning on the highest level possible. By using it as the cream and mud, putting it on transdermal, it’s going to absorb quickest through the body without putting any extra exertion on the digestive system.” The products used are selectively sourced. The Kerstin Florian Ginger Oil features two types of ginger from Indonesia and Thailand, as well as coriander from Morocco. “The ginger is invigorating – and it smells phenomenal,” Schafer says. “It can also help with your respiratory system, muscle aches and fatigue. It’s deeply warming.” Kerstin Florian’s Fuß balm, applied to the feet (though Schafer advises it can be used elsewhere on the body), cools with menthol, rosemary, pine and lavender to ease joints, muscle tension and soreness, providing renewed energy. The tools used by the massage therapists prove as essential as the products, most of which are available to purchase in the spa’s shop. A Supracor Stimulite bath mitt allows the massage therapist to apply quick, dry brushstrokes. Its honeycomb texture is designed to exfoliate and promote cellular regeneration and lymphatic drainage by releasing toxins. After each side of your body is dry brushed, Schafer details,
the massage therapist uses a warm towel, “infused with this mineral wellness soak, which has eucalyptus and magnesium, [to] go down one side of your body at a time, swiping away any dead skin cells.” To treat the face, the massage therapist uses a light shield by DMH Aesthetics. This LED face shield features thin horizontal lines, which fan out from around the eyes and radiate red. “Red is a mood-boosting color,” Schafer reports. “It’s going to help with the skin of your face, with any inflammation. When you go into fall and winter, a lot of people get sad. A red LED helps lift the mood.” Meanwhile, your feet are massaged with the Fuß balm, using movements similar to reflexology. Schafer describes clients as resting in a cocoon-like state while the face shield emits its red glow – a process at the end of the treatment that seals in the benefits gained by this new service. “Is it possible to be stimulated, circulated and invigorated, while also deeply relaxed?” Schafer asks. “My hope is that The Remedy does that. This service is a great way to take care of your body, while also being pampered, and there’s no better time to take care of yourself.” The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, 999 N. Dream Designer
The

egan Schmitz of Praxis Design Studio is in the business of building dreams. You’ve likely seen her work being used by one of your favorite local vendors, such as Patty’s Cheesecakes in City Foundry or Sisters Sandwich Shoppe. Schmitz works to fuel small businesses through her expansive design services, and realizing the passion of small-business owners drives Schmitz in her own work. “I firmly believe that everybody deserves access to great design so that their brand, their passion, is showcased in its best and brightest light,” the entrepreneur says. “I want to help other people put their dreams out into the world.” Schmitz gained her expertise from working at an advertising agency, where she managed commercial retail brands through process development, art direction, media design, image adjustments and file creation. This wide exposure to industry practices serves her well in assisting others with the challenges of defining brand identity, building an online presence and even preparing for future collateral needs. “It’s great to help guide them through not just the aesthetic aspect but also the functional side,” Schmitz

says. “Having that knowledge base and experience has been invaluable. My background lends itself to being able to offer a variety of services to my clients.” A cornerstone practice of Praxis Design is to design with the aim of being “confidently cohesive.” “Cohesiveness is key when it comes to building recognition,” Schmitz elaborates. “It can be overwhelming for business owners to piece together a wide scope of collateral, each with unique specifications, all while keeping it harmonious. That’s where I jump in, to organize it all so that each interaction reinforces brand presence and presents something new.” In launching her own business, the entrepreneur found support from like-minded business leaders. “When I went full time with Praxis Design two years ago, I was at a loss of where to start,” Schmitz recalls. “I stumbled upon a network of other creative female-owned businesses that I jibed with [through The Women’s Creative]. I had no idea St. Louis had such a robust small-business community, and I consider myself lucky to be among such talented and driven people.” She made friends who became customers, and soon, referrals and other personal interactions turned Praxis Design into a full-time success – though that journey was not without its challenges. “Waves of insecurity come along with being a female business owner,” Schmitz explains. “This feeling of, am I good enough? Is this the right decision? Occasionally feeling like I need a fake-it-till-you-make-it confidence
I fIrmly belIeve that everybody deserves access to great desIgn so that theIr brand, theIr passIon, Is showcased In Its best and brIghtest lIght.
can be exhausting and makes me question my validity as an entrepreneur. It’s been a terrifying experience but exceptionally more empowering.” However, meeting with clients whose ambition aligns with her own serves as a reminder to Schmitz that her mission matters. “People with a passion want to make the world a better place, genuinely serve a purpose or fulfill a need,” Schmitz says. “Everybody comes with a different story, from a different background, and it’s exciting to hear why they started their business. They want to put their uniqueness out into the universe, and help others to live their best lives.” Meeting fellow female founders and owners along the way continues to inspire Schmitz in her work on behalf of small businesses. “Women-owned businesses are powerful and fun,” she says. “With every woman that I have worked with or run into, it’s been a really great camaraderie. We want others to succeed. We want to help each other surpass goals, and to better the community that we live in and serve.” In turn, Schmitz adds that offering that support to small businesses strengthens Praxis Design. “I ride my clients’ wave of passion,” Schmitz says. “It is intoxicating, and it feeds my creativity. The resilience and drive it takes to fuel a small business is nothing short of spectacular. To meet these women, work with them and create something we are the better for is both humbling and exhilarating.” Praxis Design Studio, praxisdesignstudio.com

Supporting Clients Through Challenging Times By Alecia Humphreys | Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
F
iguring out your financial future amidst formidable life changes can be a lot to bear. Thankfully, The Rubin-Holt Team at Plaza Advisory Group is determined to set clients up for financial success during the daunting days surrounding divorce, retirement and more. “We work with individuals, couples, and also multigenerational families who manage wealth through all kinds of transitions — but divorce in particular has been a big focus of ours,” says Judy Rubin, managing director, wealth manager and partner at Plaza Advisory Group. “The reason for this focus comes from our own life experiences.” Rubin, who is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®, says she had a divorce in the mid-1990s, which resulted in her realization that few resources were available for women going through the same situation. Rubin’s business partner and son, Whitey Holt, was a child of divorce and recently Rubin was honored as a Champion for Kids by Kids in the Middle, a counseling service for children dealing with family transitions. “We both have a warm place in our hearts for women, who are often mothers, who are faced with the transition from being a couple to being solo,” says Rubin. “Divorce is, for most people, one of the toughest emotional times in their lives. Negotiating your financial future while you’re going through a very tough, emotionally painful time can seem very lonely and daunting. So we provide a team that has been through this many times before. Our team is especially savvy to the money issues and a lot of the emotional issues that surround the process of divorce.” One example is dividing a couple’s assets or their income streams. During the negotiation process, the Rubin-Holt team can be a resource to women and their mediators and attorneys. “We can illustrate what life will look like if they accept settlement A versus settlement B,” says Rubin. Which can ultimately help clients through the stressful process. “When you’re dividing up long-term lives, it can be really complicated,” says Rubin. “Making those kinds of decisions when you’ve never done it before and you’re emotionally hobbled can be terrifying. Bringing in a team like ours can help someone feel much better about the decisions they do make. They have more confidence in what those decisions mean to them.” When the divorce is finished, the Rubin-Holt team usually continues their role as planner but add other services like investment management, estate planning, risk management and more. “It turns into a long term relationship of a financial advisor and investment manager and we get to see them recover and thrive.” says Rubin. “We really get to know our clients. We care very much about them.” Plaza Advisory Group, 101 S. Hanley Road, Suite 1350, Clayton, 314-726-0600, plazaadvisors.com

nterior designer Megan Temple, namesake of the St. Louis-based firm Megan Temple Design, started the design shown here with a canvas of Serena & Lily champagne grasscloth wallpaper. As she prepared to dress up her Glendale clients’ bedroom with an art gallery wall, she strategized to maintain a balance of neutral colors throughout the rest of the space. The process of creating the gallery wall began with Temple seeking feedback from her clients: “We created a packet of art that I thought the couple might like and had them take time to make notes on all the pieces that they loved, liked and disliked. There are definitely some ‘his and hers’ selections, but we feel the wall came together seamlessly because it truly represents both our clients.” Focusing on the pieces that were labeled as “loved,” Temple drew layout templates with tracing paper, placed them on the walls and then added more artwork with the right sizes and shapes for the leftover space. Final installation was completed by O’Hare Interiors. “The custom neon light is one of my favorite details,” Temple notes. “Our clients chose ‘Tea and Columbo’ because they love to drink tea and watch episodes of Columbo together. touches really make the design.” For those attempting to design their own gallery wall, Temple advises prioritizing the artwork you love. “Choose a variety of shapes and sizes, and try to hang them evenly spaced,” she details. “Creating templates is a foolproof way to create your layout! The biggest mistake I see (especially when using photos for a gallery wall) is not choosing the right size [or] scale for the wall.” Other artistic details in the design pictured here include Couture Lamps on each side of the bed, which feature a marble print inside the shades, and custom drapes with a Kravet cutvelvet pattern, created by Heartwarming Interiors. “I can’t get over the combination of the Couture Lamps and the velvet drapes,” Temple gushes. “It’s like they were made for each other. … Sometimes all the perfect elements just fall into place, and this was one of those projects!”

Webster Groves’ neW shop Field Theory is a modern outdoor retailer desiGned to help you Get out and about.
Whether they’re rocking glacier sunglasses in the Central West End or atop [Alaskan mountain] Denali, the product is the same. At the end of the day, things are meant to be used. We sell products based on their durability, functionality and intentionality.” – Ian VanDam
T
he powerhouse family behind Webster Groves’ Civil Alchemy, The Annex Coffee and Foods and The Frisco Barroom has done it again. Sibling retailer Field Theory opened in the heart of the Old Orchard business district in early October with an aim to sell high-quality outdoor lifestyle gear, provisions and fashion-forward apparel. “St. Louis has been craving and needing another men’s shop that resonates with a customer base that has been largely ignored, by larger retailers as well,” says Field Theory founder Ian VanDam, who is also co-founder and chief operating officer of Civil Alchemy and co-founder of Missouri-based Truly Floral Spirits. Field Theory carries high-quality outdoor gear, provisions and technical apparel, as well as stylish outdoor-oriented men’s apparel and unisex outerwear, like ski and rain jackets. The retailer’s premium high-quality brands, based primarily in Japan, Europe and America, were heavily researched and curated by VanDam. For many of the products, Field Theory is the first place they’re available in the metro area. “If you’re investing in outerwear and outdoor gear, you want to know you’re getting the best possible thing at the best possible price,” says VanDam, himself an avid outdoor enthusiast, who spent many months reaching out to his friends, family and professional networks to curate an all-star list of upper-echelon brands and products in the outdoor retail market to stock the shelves. “Everything we carry serves a purpose; we’re about form and function, always. It can never just look good; it has to have a purpose in our lives.” The pillar of Field Theory’s offerings is a focus on mountain sports – hiking, skiing, rock climbing, camping and camp cookware – that crosses over into fashion and style in addition to a hypertechnical function focus. “A lot of our outdoor gear crosses over into travel, in that it’s lightweight and packable, like packable towels, quick-dry apparel and bags for traveling, because I think our customer is equally inspired by the outdoors as they are seeing the far reaches of the world through travel,” VanDam says. The aesthetic of the offerings is a minimal, timeless, earthtoned palette with clean lines and classic patterns. When
customers walk through the Field Theory doors, the store’s goal is to immediately transport them to the side of a mountain or underneath a cozy tent through interactive, immersive displays that show off what products can do. Only a month after its opening, Field Theory has already been generating a lot of buzz from outdoor enthusiasts about many of its offerings. One item in particular about which VanDam has received tremendous positive feedback is a waterproof inflatable tent from the German brand Heimplanet. It can be hand-inflated in less than a minute and stands sturdily using a geodesic dome construction that doesn’t require ropes or rods to hold it down, even against extreme wind and other weather conditions. Another must-have accessory is the Vuarnet glacier sunglasses that were designed, created, intended and fully functional for glacier climbing and skiing – but look equally stylish on metro area streets. “That’s the goal of Field Theory products – we want them to be fully functional for the person who wants to take on a 14,000-foot mountain or go on an expedition adventure across rugged terrain, but also for someone who loves the look and feel of high-quality things,” VanDam says. “Whether they’re rocking glacier sunglasses in the Central West End or atop [Alaskan mountain] Denali, the product is the same. At the end of the day, things are meant to be used. We sell products based on their durability, functionality and intentionality.” With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us all to reevaluate our lifestyles and how we want to spend our time, many area residents stepped outside to take in the beauty and importance of nature. For some, that meant more hikes, rock climbing and ski trips than usual, and for others, that might have meant camping for the first time. Regardless, Field Theory’s doors are open. “I want to evoke an emotion in people so they’re inspired to take on something they might not have done on their own,” VanDam says, “but I also want people to walk in and feel really confident about the quality and durability of what they’re getting – whether at the beginning of their journey or far along it.” Field Theory, 8153 Big Bend Blvd., St. Louis, 314-942-2025, fieldtheory.us laduenews.com | november 12, 2021

GUIDE The Diamond Bar
Elegant and Exceptional By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of The Diamond Bar
W
hen looking for jewelry for your loved ones this holiday season, look for something unique. The Diamond Bar features custom diamond and gemstone jewelry of the best quality, in a comfortable and stress-free setting. Owner Chris Phillips has worked in the jewelry design business for almost 17 years and saw an avenue for a more relaxed shopping experience. “I wanted to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere where clients can shop, have a beverage and have education about what they’re buying,” he explains. “The atmosphere is what makes the store; I want it to be low-pressure and fun.” Phillips adds that this holiday season, there has been a trend toward color, both in gemstones such as sapphires
and emeralds and in a rise in yellow and rose gold. Similarly, there is a shift from more understated, everyday pieces to more bold styles. “Jewelry shoppers are looking for necklaces and cocktail rings – and stunning statement pieces,” Phillips says. “Clients are seeking timeless pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation – something that will make a statement for the next generation.” On Nov. 26, The Diamond Bar will be having its first-ever Black Friday sale. There will be 26 percent off all in-stock merchandise on the 26th. This is the store’s first large, advertised sale, and Phillips is excited to see business that day. “You know, I think for one day, let’s see what happens,” he says. “I think if everyone comes in and buys everything [or] we get that one person who has never come in, what a great day.” The Diamond Bar understands that jewelry is an emotional, sentimental purchase and strives to make every piece with the care and quality it deserves. An engagement, an anniversary or a holiday is a celebration, and your gift will always be created uniquely for you. his year, give the gift of relaxation, renewal and rejuvenation – to yourself or a loved one. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a pampered DaySpa experience, or to renew and rejuvenate with cutting edge MedSpa treatments and procedures, The Face & The Body DaySpa|MedSpa|Salons has everything you need. “We are excited to maintain our forty-year reputation of the premier DaySpa in the St. Louis Metro-area coupled with the launch of our cutting-edge MedSpas in all three stateof-the-art locations,” explains owner Jennah Purk. “The Face & the Body is the only luxury spa in town where clients can accomplish their goal of relaxation in the same facility they receive coveted anti-aging and rejuvenating treatments.” “We specialize in advanced injection techniques of wellknown toxins and fillers that render unparalleled results,” adds Stephanie Bruner, The Face & The Body’s director of nursing. Treatments include platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. The Face & The Body pairs PRP with traditional microneedling and Radio Frequency (RF) micro-needling to treat troublesome signs of aging. They also go above and beyond by sending clients home with their own PRP based topical for continued results. “The micro-needling results are astounding when coupled with PRP and our favorite PRP take-home topical SoMe,” Bruner says. “RF Micro needling equates the results
of four traditional micro-needling sessions and has minimal to no downtime, quickly becoming a client favorite.” The Face & The Body provides toxins such as Botox, Xeomin and Dysport, as well as a wide array of dermal fillers. There clinical team is able to utilize advanced techniques with these fillers to tighten skin and reduce cellulite. There is
package pricing available for nonsurgical body treatments. Add to that, their advanced technology in IPL and Hair Removal and the sky is the limit for results. “Every service we offer is highly customized,” Purk adds. “We build time into each appointment to consult with the client and define their individual goals. We don’t rush – our success is measured by our client satisfaction.” If you’re ready to “WOW” someone else this holiday season, Purk and Bruner agree purchasing a gift card allows your loved one the most flexibility to get what he or she wants from the experience. From the first consulting appointment, The Face & The Body will build a discount package that helps the gift card go further. GUIDE Genovese Jewelers
‘Tis the Season for Sparkle By Maggie Peters | Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
L
ocally owned and operated for 40 years, Genovese Jewelers has the best selection for the holidays – available at any price point and featuring all the recent trends. Executive buyer Katie Kelly says such trends include a recent look at experimenting with different diamond cuts. “We’re moving into new shapes,” she says. “A lot of people are coming in looking for baguette or emerald-cut to mix in with the classic round.” The facets in this more angular shape don’t create the same sparkle as a round diamond, which makes an excellent accent stone, as well as adds texture and contrast when paired with other pieces. Layering is everything in fashion, and pairing a round diamond tennis bracelet with another that uses baguette and round adds more detail and breaks up the usual shape. Baguette and emerald cuts on cuff bracelets also create a more contemporary look. Whether in a statement ring, bracelet or necklace, this trend’s ability to accent other pieces makes it a versatile addition to your catalog. These stones work well for dressing up or dressing down particular looks, depending how they are paired, as well. “We’ve seen a lot of brides come in looking for more mixing shapes in their rings and wedding bands,” Kelly adds. “It makes the ring feel unique and different from everyone else, [and] it looks good in all golds.”
Whether for a ring to pop the question or holiday gift for a loved one, Genovese has all the shapes, styles and colors to find exactly what you want. The store also delivers to your home, office or wherever is easiest for you to make the holiday shopping that much easier. Stop in today and find your perfect piece. tory Seven, located in the picturesque Old Webster, is ringing in the holiday season with gifts for everyone on your list and a festive atmosphere that will warm the winter air. “Our favorite season is here,” says co-owner Melanie Bennett. “We’re ready to wrap up gifts for everyone on your list.” Bennett runs Story Seven with co-owners Sarah Jozwiakowski and Karen Drexler, housing everything from clothing, jewelry and accessories to home décor, food and games. And this time of year, the store is bursting with new products and lines, ready for the holiday rush. “We have been planning for this holiday season since our market trip in January,” says Jozwiakowski. “Our holiday theme this year is ‘A Storybook Christmas’ and we are so excited to share it with our customers. When customers visit Story Seven, we want them to feel the joy of the season and the nostalgic feel of Christmas traditions.”
On Nov. 14, you can stop into Story Seven and many other local shops for the 30th annual Webster Groves holiday open house. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., stores on and around Main Street will display their holiday wares, alongside snacks, carolers and, of course, Santa. “The community really rallies around the holiday,” Drexler adds. “You can make a day of shopping, while grabbing lunch or a cocktail. There’s something for all ages.” Throughout the holidays, Story Seven will be decorated with wintery themes and also host various pop-up events. Information on what’s coming can always be found through the store’s Instagram, and online orders can be placed for delivery and pickup through the website. tarted by a key team from Creve Coeur Camera, the St. Louis School of Photography – also known as The Photo Pros – began with a focus on photography lessons, camera gadgets and travel. “When COVID slowed travel, we diversified and added the name ‘The Photo Pros,’” explains co-founder Stephen Weiss. “We began providing a huge assortment of products and services, including metal prints, canvas prints, matte prints and home movie transfers – from VHS to both DVD and USB. HOME BEAUTIFUL SAVVY DESIGN GROUP
Creating a Home with
heritage By Maggie Peters | Photos by Christina Kling-garrett
O
pened in 2009 with an updated design library in 2019, Savvy Design Group is a full-service interior design firm that specializes in both residential and commercial boutique properties. Its goal is to create functional, beautiful spaces that fit both clients’ vision and their budget. “We’re very focused on making the design process as comfortable for our clients as possible,” explains owner Diane Mantovani. “We assign a designer and project manager on every project to assist clients through the process.” It was Mantovani’s passion for creative design that inspired her to found Savvy Design Group, and that same passion is what drew her to her newest project: renovating and remodeling an old Italian movie theater in The Hill neighborhood into the home of her dreams. The commercial building is more than 100 years old and most recently had been used as a catering kitchen for food trucks. “During the pandemic, we came up with the brainchild to convert it to my home,” Mantovani says. Working with Markway construction, she has been renovating it for the last seven months, creating a modern and functional home – with plenty of space for entertaining. Mantovani adds that the home’s location in The Hill was important, given her own Italian heritage. “It’s going to have a front courtyard inspired by Tuscany – we want to stay true to those roots,” she says. The home will also include an open floor plan that features contemporary and modern furnishings. A courtyard in the back will hold a pool and outdoor dining space. There will also be a music room, including a grand piano and stereo system, which will be flooded with natural light from a skylight. “I really love the open floor plan – there are really no walls on the main floor,” Mantovani adds. “I love that for either, when you’re just home or entertaining, everything is wide open and feeling spacious.” Mantovani is also staying true to the home’s heritage by having pieces of the original ceiling repurposed for the staircase and floating shelves. The builder will also be using the reclaimed wood to create a dining room table that Mantovani can’t wait to use when hosting family dinners. “I’ve really enjoyed designing my own home from concept through completion,” she concludes. “I’ve done it for others for years, but there’s an extra satisfaction in designing your own space.” Savvy Design Group, 9810 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-432-7289, savvyladue.com

GATHERINGS & GOODWILL AIM HIGH ST. LOUIS
LUMINOSITY Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
G
uests of Aim High St. Louis’ Luminosity gala recently gathered in the courtyard at John Burroughs School to celebrate 30 years of helping increase the academic potential of middle school students from economically disadvantaged schools in the metro area. Two Aim High alumnae staged the evening’s entertainment: Ashreale McDowell performed an interpretive dance, while Tashia Tiggs-Ochoa got the crowd moving with salsa instruction. Later in the evening, Jim Kemp received the Keith Shahan Award, and Alec Lee was inducted into The Ruth Todd David Honor Society. Dorvonda Payne, an Aim High alumna and the organization’s development and marketing manager, served as the keynote speaker. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!
ln
Aim High’s mission of heightening academic engagement for motivated youth with underrealized potential has become even more important over the past year and a half, as the pandemic further highlighted growing disparities in educational resources for children from traditionally underserved communities. This is particularly true in a city like St. Louis, where the gap in socioeconomic status is so stark, especially in many of the ZIP codes that a majority of our students live. I originally got involved with Aim High as a teaching assistant while attending John Burroughs in the early ’90s because I wanted more kids from neighborhoods like mine to learn early that a commitment to academic excellence could open a world of opportunity for them.

SSM HealtH Cardinal Glennon CHildren’S Foundation
Giving Hope & Health THIS HOLIDAY SEASON By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation
T
he mission of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital states: “Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.” The SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation works to support the children’s hospital, allowing it to provide its lifesaving care to every child and family in need. Children like that include newborn Hailey, pictured here. After a complicated pregnancy led to a premature birth at 26 weeks, Hailey was born weighing 1 pound, 10 ounces. Immediately thereafter, she was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon for the best chance of survival. It was a challenging first few months; Hailey developed klebsiella pneumonia, along with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a form of chronic lung disease. These were serious medical conditions – extremely difficult for underdeveloped, premature babies to manage. “Her doctors told me that she needed an emergency tracheotomy,” says Jennifer, Hailey’s mother. “It would be a risky surgery, but I couldn’t give up on her. I had to put my faith and trust into her Cardinal Glennon team.” That faith and trust paid off; the skilled physicians at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon performed her surgery and gave Hailey another chance at life. After 277 long days, she left the hospital and started the next chapter of her healing. Hailey is now a happy 1-year-old child with a big personality. While she still has a long road to recovery ahead, Hailey continues to show her strength and bring joy to her family and care team. “Every minute I get to spend with my daughter is because of Cardinal Glennon and the amazing people in the community who help this special place,” says Jennifer. You can support Cardinal Glennon children like Hailey by giving through the Tree of Hope end of year giving campaign this holiday season. Through giving to the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, your donation will go toward improving the technology and facilities needed for the hospital to continue providing livesaving care to children who need it most. LOCAL EATS
Milque Toast Bar By Mabel Suen
M
ilque Toast Bar has returned with its seasonal, locally focused toast dishes, new dinner hours and rotating thematic menus. The eatery, which debuted in 2015 in St. Louis’ McKinley Heights neighborhood, closed in March 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Since then, owner Colleen Clawson has served as the chef behind sustainable prepared foods brand Nourish STL, which she co-founded last February. With the reopening of Milque Toast Bar, Clawson offers regular dinner hours for the first time – and she has a liquor license in the works. “The dinners are monthly pop-ups,” Clawson says. “The first one was South City barbecue, and then we featured Cajun fais dodo, which is Creole for a big party. Now, we’ll be featuring Baba Xavi through the winter.” Clawson’s modern Indian bistro concept, Baba Xavi, was named after her son Xavier (Xavi)

Customers can choose from dishes such as smoked tandoori wings, mulligatawny, palak paneer and chicken tikka masala. Upcoming dinner themes will include a southern Franceinspired menu. Although the dinner menu is available only in the evenings, toasts are available all day, including sweet and savory options on baked goods from St. Louis’ Bridge Bread. Guests can choose from toppings such as Fluffernutter, s’mores and truffle egg salad. A French toast bar brunch is also available every Sunday. In addition to a revamped patio – complete with a stage and an outdoor kitchen – Milque

To drink, customers can choose from housemade cream sodas, Milque Toast’s own medium-bodied coffee blend roasted by First Crack Coffee and such bottled options as St. Louis Cannabis Club seltzers and Juice Master juices. “It’s really nice to be back in our little urban oasis,” Clawson says. “I have to say that seeing all of our people again is the best part. Leaving a Legacy By Andrea Smith | Photos courtesy of The Sheldon, rendering courtesy of SPACE Architecture + Design

he Sheldon in St. Louis recently received a $3 million gift – the largest individual gift the local landmark has ever received – and plans to use the funds for improvement projects beginning in December. According to an August press release, the bequest came from former Sheldon Arts Foundation board member Wilfred Konneker and his wife, Ann Lee, who died in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Wilfred Konneker served on the board for 19 years, including three years as chair. “The Konnekers’ generosity over the past 25 years helped shape The Sheldon into the important cultural institution it is today,” Sheldon board chair Jim Watson states in the release. “This donation is transformational and will allow The Sheldon to make exciting improvements that will create an even more welcoming experience for our guests.” Major updates are set to begin next month with the remodel of the 650-personcapacity Louis Spiering Room, which will be renamed in honor of the philanthropic couple. The Konneker Room will make its public debut on April 2, 2022, at The Sheldon’s gala. St. Louis’ SPACE Architecture + Design will redesign the room to “reflect the warm, comfortable atmosphere of the Sheldon Concert Hall, with design elements inspired by the work of Sheldon architect Louis Spiering,” the release states. The modernization is expected to feature rich blue and cream colors, copper accents, salvaged brick and terra cotta from Eames & Young’s Title Guaranty Building (built in downtown St. Louis in 1898 and demolished in 1983), a raised ceiling and elegant new lighting. “Our goal is to create a lighter, airier space

that feels like a natural extension of the concert hall and galleries,” says Shelley Satke Niemeier, co-owner and interior designer for SPACE Architecture + Design. “Louis Spiering said, ‘A good design must first of all solve the specific problem in regard to its practical requirements, meet the prescribed needs of its usefulness ... [be] convenient, economical and beautiful.’ Our team takes the same approach.” The Sheldon is accepting event bookings for The Konneker Room and provides details at thesheldon.org/konnekerroom.
Additional projects to be completed in the next three to five years include sound and lighting tech upgrades in the concert hall, a remodel of the Kemper Atrium lobby and gallery spaces, a new recording and podcast studio and other improvements. “Everyone should know what the Konnekers did for the St. Louis community,” says Sheldon executive director Peter Palermo. “Their longtime, foundational support for organizations like The Sheldon, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, COCA, the Saint Louis Art Museum and more will continue to enhance our city’s culture for generations to come.”

STEAM-Y READS
READY READERS
By Sheila Oliveri
M
any metro area parents likely know of the STEM approach to education, which unites science, technology, engineering and math to encourage critical thinking. But many educators have added art to the mix and the acronym, to differently engage inquisitive minds in creative problem-solving. That said, Ready Readers this month shares two STEAM-y books with the preschoolaged children in its Storytime Program – and with LN readers. The first, Rosa’s Big Pizza Experiment, tells the delightful tale of four preschool friends learning across all disciplines as they read a recipe, measure ingredients, create chemical reactions and taste the results of their investigation. Writer/ illustrator Jessica Spanyol portrays four diverse students cooperating, following
directions and understanding new vocabulary, all while attempting a new experience. Not everything they try works as expected, but the friends support one another and retain the fun of discovery. The equally delightful picture book Frisky Brisky Hippity Hop, this month’s second
recommended title, incorporates text based on a poem by Alexina B. White. Murray Head’s captivating color photos of squirrels illustrate the visual and lyrical exploration of wildlife in our midst. Children should be captivated by the color, depth of field and textural richness of Head’s images, allowing an up-close view of creatures normally seen darting away too quickly to study. White’s original text includes fun rhyming and movement opportunities, while Susan Lurie’s additions create a lovely resolution to the melodic story. Reading can be the first step to family fun. Share these books and others with your children to see where your imaginations take you!

The heaT is on for meTro area naTive ChrisTian sTolTe, who Co-sTars in nBC’s Top-raTed ChiCago Fire.
hristian Stolte, a metro area resident transplanted to Chicago, is now performing in one of network television’s hottest shows. Stolte, a native of Black Jack in north-central St. Louis County, plays veteran firefighter Randall “Mouch” McHolland in Chicago Fire, the middle third of producer Dick Wolf ’s One Chicago dramatic triad airing on NBC on Wednesday evenings. In the 2020-21 Nielsen ratings, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Fire averaged a total viewership of 10,230,000 – almost eight times the combined populations of St. Louis and St. Louis County – and took seventh place, surpassed as a scripted program only by NCIS, The Equalizer and FBI. In Chicago Fire’s fictional Firehouse 51, roughly a dozen main players populate the narrative, with both dramatic and comedic turns often devoted to Stolte’s character – whose nickname derives from a portmanteau of man and couch, because Mouch passes most of his free time occupying a couch while watching TV. Chicago Fire recently celebrated its 200th episode during its 10th season – a banner event for any TV program – on Oct. 20, just four days after Stolte’s 59th birthday. After his youth in Black Jack, Stolte attended first the University of MissouriColumbia and then the University of Missouri-St. Louis, he relates by phone while readying to squire his wife to a flea market and then spend quality time with grandchildren. Following that, Stolte worked for a funeral company, and at one point, he contemplated becoming a police officer. On a visit to University City’s landmark Blueberry Hill, though, a friend suggested to him that Stolte go into acting instead – to play a cop on TV instead of risking life and limb to be one. From there, things snowballed – or perhaps more accurately fireballed – for Stolte when he landed the role of Mouch, first (in the premiere season of Fire) as a recurring character and then as a regular. Brawny and mustachioed, Stolte’s character looks like a grizzly but has the heart of a teddy bear. “I’ve got to give a lot of credit
to the writers,” the actor remarks. “The writers get to know you over time.” That leads to considerable acclimation and the delicate balance between drama and comedy that Mouch has enjoyed of late. By way of example, in last season’s Episode 9, “Double Red,” Mouch confronted deep-felt fears of being superannuated with age. Then, just five episodes later, in “What Comes Next,” he hilariously, if accidentally, rid Firehouse 51 of a literal hellcat that had been terrorizing the station. Ironically, all of that screen time unnerved Stolte a bit, given Fire’s tendency at times to dramatically dispatch characters like paramedic Leslie Elizabeth Shay (Lauren German) and firefighter Brian “Otis” Zvonecek (Yuri Sardarov). “Are they about to kill me?” Stolte recalls wondering about the writers’ increased attentions in Fire’s ninth season, which ended with a cliffhanger like a multiple-alarm blaze, as a quartet of firefighters found themselves trapped in a capsized ship during a water rescue. “That was one occasion when I was happy when my character wasn’t on Squad,” Stolte confesses of the Firehouse 51 subgroup involved. For this season, Stolte promises, in that vein, “rescues the likes of which we have never seen before.” Meanwhile, Stolte stays busy. Beyond his acting on the stage, the small screen and the big screen, he’s written plays and inspired fan paraphernalia including 110-page softcover lined journals, I Christian Stolte and What Would Christian Stolte Do? (No, seriously – check Amazon.) The hometown hero from Black Jack otherwise plays guitar and writes songs and mentions in passing the possibility of visiting the metro area in mid-November to enjoy a performance here by the Illinois octet The Ike Reilly Assassination. Finally, he reflects on the general bonhomie prevalent among the members of his drama’s sizable cast. “Off-screen, we’re constantly ribbing each other,” Stolte relates. And it appears as if he and his Fire fellows will continue to enjoy that interaction: NBC, as early as February 2020, renewed the program through its 11th season.
