lthough the COVID-19 pandemic closed down the physical courts in Missouri, the attorneys at Hais, Hais & Goldberger have continued to work to serve clients in cases of divorce, custody and other family law matters. “We are busy,” veteran attorney Susan Hais confirms. “We are getting a lot of people contacting me by phone, and I do the conferences by phone and by Zoom. That has not stopped. We [also] have taken a lot more files.” Susan Hais, alongside her husband, Sam Hais, founded the firm in 1993 and today works with a dedicated team, having garnered a reputation for handling complex family law settlements for high-profile families in the metro area. The pandemic has also given the firm more time to devote to reviewing older files, records and cases, as well as working with a large influx of divorces. “Everyone is working and everyone is working hard,” Susan Hais says. “We feel grateful that we’re able to work, that we have an essential business. We feel very grateful about what we have, and we’re grateful to our clients.”

8

“Our team is doing a great job,” Sam Hais adds. “With [the pandemic], we’ve really pulled together.” Sam and Susan Hais both consider it a reward of the business to be able to help people through difficult and emotional times in the most thorough and efficient way possible. With more than 100 years of collective legal experience, Hais, Hais & Goldberger is able to provide clients or potential clients the entire lay of the land, from the beginning to the end of a family law action. “When people come to us, we try to give them the best advice we can from their point of view,” Sam Hais concludes. “We put their troubles in perspectives we understand and treat it as a team effort between client and attorney. We want our clients to be happy, most of all.” Hais, Hais & Goldberger, 222 S. Central Ave., Suite 600, 314-326-4885, hhg-law.com

Ladue’s ChangeMakers By Oviya Srihari

‌S

tudents Shelei Pan, Anna Reis and Agha Haider didn’t step back when COVID-19 hit the metro area – instead, they stepped up to make change in the Ladue community. A freshman at Washington University in St. Louis and a recent Ladue Horton Watkins High School alumna, Shelei Pan leads Project Masked, an initiative providing local youths with personal protective equipment during the pandemic. “When cases started going up in St. Louis, I wanted to help … in the most socially responsible way,” Pan says. “I remembered the toddler- and child-sized masks I’d seen during my prepandemic volunteer shifts at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. I realized that PPE is really contingent upon fit, yet there were few child-sized masks on the market at the time.” Running Project Masked involves coordinating donation requests and check-ins with Pan’s network of mask-making volunteers. The initiative has donated more than 2,000 masks, with more than 150 volunteers sewing behind the scenes. “I’ll never forget the first time I saw a kid wearing one of our masks,” Pan says. “It was extremely humbling. As a volunteer, it’s easy to get into a routine of doing service … but something like that happens, and it’s impossible to not smile and think about how we’re actually impacting real children.” Meanwhile, Ladue Horton Watkins High School senior Anna Reis created SAGE, or Student Action for a Greener Earth. SAGE engages in activities to reduce Ladue’s local carbon footprint, including a full-day audit of food waste at the high school. When COVID-19 hit, however, Reis had to get creative. “One of our goals is removing honeysuckle from the community – it’s an invasive species,

10    November 20, 2020 | LadueNews.com

Project Masked, 2020

Literacy Initiative, 2018

which is bad for the local ecosystem,” she says. “We’ve removed well over 400 honeysuckle plants, and we’re not even halfway through the year. Our policy committee is currently working on a climate action plan for Ladue. They’re trying to get the high school to commit to [reducing] 50 percent of current carbon emissions by 2035 and [to being] carbon-neutral by 2050.” Local-scale advocacy is something every club member is passionate about, especially Reis. “My parents raised me to acknowledge the privilege I’ve been born with, and part of that comes with caring about other people,” Reis relates. Whitfield School senior Agha Haider shares Reis’ passion, which is why he established the Literacy Initiative in 2017, providing low-income youths with after-school programming targeting STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math) and literacy education. In spring 2020,

Haider moved this programming online. “We did a virtual tutoring program from March to May, and then our virtual camp program went from June to August,” Haider says. “We had about 1,000 students participate this summer. It was a huge success.” The Literacy Initiative has distributed more than 35,000 books and supported almost 27,000 youths, with a strong volunteer network of 700 students. Haider echoes the sentiment shared by his fellow change-makers. “The Literacy Initiative is my life, in a sense, because I spend so much time doing it,” Haider says. “It’s definitely been stressful at times. Running a nonprofit is never easy, but it’s something I would never stop.”

AGAINST THE ODDS

Heather Lynn By Brittany Nay

ince losing her cousin to leukemia during childhood, Heather Lynn made it her mission to ensure others battling blood cancers get a second chance at life. Earlier this year, the St. Louis native fulfilled that life purpose: saving a stranger by donating her stem cells. Five years ago, Lynn became the director of global special events for DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow and blood stem cell donor center, and registered as a potential donor with the hope that someday she could give a blood cancer patient what her cousin didn’t have – a second chance at life and more time with the patient’s family. Amid this year’s coronaviral pandemic, Lynn received the life-changing call from a colleague that she was a match for a 58-year-old man battling acute myeloid leukemia. “I screamed with joy,” Lynn recalls. “I was a match for someone with blood cancer and was about to be the first employee at DKMS to donate and ultimately save someone’s life.” After the call, Lynn realized she would be giving more than stem cells: “I was giving something much bigger: hope.” Despite the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, Lynn felt a strong sense of purpose to help this man and donated her stem cells to save his life. “I have seen how much someone’s life can change with a blood cancer diagnosis,” Lynn says. “The fear, the pain, the loss – it can be devastating. I have spent the past five years working to elevate the message about donating and how easy it is to sign up and give back – it simply requires swabbing the inside of each cheek for 60 seconds.” Lynn emphatically recommends others register to be potential life-saving donors, as every 3 minutes, an American is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every day, at least 21 DKMS donors give patients another chance at life. Seventy percent of people suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers must rely on donors outside their families, and

S

Susan Sanders Block By Alice Handelman

usan Sanders Block’s imagination began flowing when she was a young girl. In kindergarten, she was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and confined to her bed for eight months. “I spent a lot of time by myself,” she says. Although she eventually recovered, she had to avoid high-impact activities and was not allowed to walk, run or jump like other kids. “I had to keep myself occupied since there was no TV in my bedroom, and I could not read very well,” she explains. Her creativity grew even more as the years passed, helping her blossom into the gifted woman she is today – an accomplished artist, entrepreneur, interior designer, supporter, mentor and volunteer extraordinaire. At the age of 20, she joined Junior League, where she says she learned how to be an effective volunteer. “I love doing the creative work needed by organizations,” she says. “It’s rewarding to see them grow and know that you have been a part of their success.” In the past 40 years, she has chaired more than 100 events and committees, including the Leigh Gerdine Advisory Council at Webster University’s College of Fine Arts, the St. Louis County Library Gala, the St. Louis City Library Gala and I love doing the Craft Alliance’s 40th creative work needed anniversary. She has also served on more than by organizations. 20 boards, including the Arts and Education Council, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Saint Louis Zoo and the Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund, which she co-founded. A supporter and mentor to many fashion designers and artists, she also serves on the board of the St. Louis Fashion Fund. In 2009, Block was recognized as a Woman of Achievement for her creative philanthropy. She has also been honored as a Woman of Worth and a Ladue Horton Watkins High School Local Hero, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Washington University in St. Louis. In 1980, she started an interior design group, The Designing Block. The Designing Block temporarily closed last summer and is currently transitioning into an art gallery and workshop. Block works with all kinds of media, but most of her contemporary work is done in acrylic. “I’m finally getting back into my true love of painting,” she says. A graduate of Wash U, Block was president of Pi Beta Phi sorority and a member of the university’s student/alumni relations committee. It was there that she met her husband, Terry. “We dated for four years and have been married for 44,” she says. The couple has two children – Britton, who lives in St. Louis, and Julie, who lives in Mexico with her husband and “Nick, our perfect grandson.”

With Giving Tuesday just around the corner, get to know eight organizations that represent some of the finest nonprofit work in the metro area.

D

uring the holiday season, many families in the metro area make donations or volunteer their time to support worthy causes, either for the large-scale Giving Tuesday movement or simply because it’s what they’ve always done. The following eight local organizations work every day across a variety of missions: to find shelter for veterans, to feed those in need, to keep animals safe and secure, and so much more. In other words, they shape the area into a stronger, better community. Consider supporting one or more of these incredible organizations this season.

Missouri Coalition for the environMent The Missouri Coalition for the Environment has a long, distinguished history of fighting for the environment. Founded in 1969, the organization is the metro area’s first independent, grassroots group dedicated to addressing environmental policy concerns. These efforts manifest in countless battles for a cleaner earth, both now and in the future. Air pollution, pesticides, nuclear waste – all have been taken on by MCE in its 50-plus years of advocacy. This year, MCE is accepting donations to support its Food & Farm Program, which champions environmentally responsible farming, soil conservation, locally produced food access and affordability, living wages for producers and more. Heroes need homes. The Missouri Veterans Endeavor helps make that happen. MOVE helps homeless veterans and their families by providing housing in a safe, secure and sober environment among other former service members. There, individuals have 24/7 access to on-site counseling services, including therapy and emergency assistance. Veterans are also provided with individual case managers, who help them develop a personal action plan that addresses achieving goals and facing obstacles. These veterans and their families form bonds of camaraderie and a shared mission to succeed together. MOVE has helped more than 130 veterans receive housing and services and has provided supportive services to more than 500 veterans. Donations help sustain the organization’s mission.

Above all else, PROMO Fund makes LGBTQ equality its mission. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization has served the community in many different capacities since its founding in 1986. It combines a history of legislative and electoral action with policy advocacy, grassroots organizing and community education to support the LGBTQ community. Now, PROMO Fund dedicates its efforts to promoting inclusivity for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. Donations to PROMO Fund help the organization host LGBTQ advocacy training, provide support for transgender Missourians and collaborate with intersectional communities across the state.

Although the mission is global – to provide a positive support system to youths facing turbulent circumstances – the St. Louis chapter’s work is distinctly local. Through different programming, members offer their collective expertise to assist the community in four key areas: mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic development. Donations directly support these efforts. Additionally, the organization has several levels of sponsorship opportunities available to individuals and businesses. 100 Black Men of Metropolitan St. Louis, 4631 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, 100blackmenstl.com

GUIDE Diamonds Direct

Bringing Sparkle to the Season By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of Diamonds Direct

iamonds Direct, founded in 1995, is a direct to consumer destination retailer headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Diamonds Direct opened its St. Louis showroom in 2015, and its vertically integrated concept allows the retailer to cut out the middleman and maintain involvement in the entire diamond process. The showrooms offer loose and mounted diamonds, with diamonds and gemstones of all shapes and sizes. Housing more than 4,000 engagement ring styles by America’s top designers, Diamonds Direct is your one-stop

shop for all things bridal. Diamonds Direct backs their products with industry-leading guarantees and warranties, including their signature 110 percent lifetime upgrade. “As a one-of-a-kind brand we take pride in working with our clients to customize pieces that fit their personalities,” says marketing and merchandising manager Davante Falls. “We create a personal relationship with each of our clients through our follow-up process. Our personal connection with each of our clients creates a more familiar relationship.” For the holiday season, Falls adds that fashion and wedding jewelry trends have been pretty steady since this time last year. “Current trends are ever-changing and vary from simple and clean to a more playful style,” he explains. “It shows in the trends we see in stacking and mixing metals; I foresee a lot of people looking to that for holiday gifts. Jewelry is all about personality, and people look for things that are different and customizable.” With the COVID-19 pandemic, Diamonds Direct has taken precautions to ensure that the health and safety of clients and employees are its highest priority. Currently, the showroom is operating at normal hours, with mandatory masks and thorough cleaning. “We have a sanitization party twice a day,” Falls says. “We blast music and our clients can kind of dance around while we clean the showroom.” There will be holiday promotions throughout the season, so stop by Diamonds Direct to experience its high quality in both selection and service. GUIDE Genovese Jewelers

A Local Treasure By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of Genovese Jewelers

L

ocally owned and family run since 1981, Genovese Jewelers hasn’t let the challenges of 2020 slow it down, continuing to serve clients during the COVID-19 pandemic through delivery, as well as its storefront. “We’re happy to ship and deliver items,” says sales manager Stacy Bates Kravanya. “We want to make it as easy to purchase from us as it would be from Amazon. We can send photos during the process of creating jewelry with no contact. We want people to feel comfortable shopping local this holiday season.” Kravanya adds that all of Genovese’s jewelry is built in house in St. Louis and supports families from the ground up, from manufacturing to selling. “Given how everyone is trying to stay afloat, if you are able to support businesses that are employing local families and doing good for the community – that is really the best we can do this holiday season,” she says. Genovese’s inventory has gotten ready for the holiday rush, no matter how customers are choosing to buy. “Our selection is huge – we’ve never had more jewelry in our showcases,” Kravanya confirms. “Obviously [this year] people aren’t going to balls,

30

so people are purchasing items that they can wear every day. We’ve got diamond studs, bracelets and the kind of staple items that will stand the test of time.” Genovese’s storefront has remained open, and although it will not have the same large, in-person promotional events, every Saturday in December will have live music in the store to help keep customers in a festive mood.

“Everyone jokes about the ‘quarantine pounds,’ but jewelry always fits,” Kravanya concludes. “People always enjoy it and love opening that blue box from Genovese on the holidays.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

arryout has grown in popularity in these pandemic times, and the Art of Entertaining has mastered the takeout meal, having been in the business for 26 years. “When you pick up restaurant carryout, it isn’t the same,” explains owner Ann Marie Lemcke. “Our recipes have been tested to work well when reheated. It’s packaged carryout that can be reheated when you are ready to eat.” The Art of Entertaining’s offerings can be ordered, and customers also can pick premade dishes for any meal from its grocery store-style storefront. It also has curbside and drive-through service for the holiday. “We’ve been delivering more during COVID for people who can’t get out or don’t want to,” Lemcke adds. “We’ve been doing small party bags delivering to houses. It’s the comfort food I feel like people are looking for right now.” The Art of Entertaining has everything you need for holiday meals, with appetizers, breakfast, lunch and dinner meals in multiple sizes to fit the size of your gathering. Each meal comes with the best of the Art of Entertaining’s holiday meals from previous years. “I pick based on what I want,” Lemcke says. “I feel like my customers are just looking for something to make them feel better this season.”

STYLE SPEAK

The Chicest Capsule on Cherokee By Bethany Christo | Photos courtesy of Ardently

‌ ne of Cherokee Antique Row’s newest O womenswear boutiques aims to save the planet – one cozy turtleneck at a time. Ardently opened its doors in mid-July specializing in women’s clothing that encourages sustainable living practices through design and material. Eighty-five percent of Ardently’s offerings are made with natural or recycled fiber (the other 15 percent are “long-lasting by design”) meant to build a capsule wardrobe of timeless, high-quality staples in neutral palettes to be worn across the seasons. Ardently sells about 10 percent secondhand or vintage pieces (what owner Theresa Mucelli calls “an homage to the original sustainable fashion”), and merchandise rotates once a month in addition to its standard capsule collection. LN recently spoke with Mucelli about how her boutique and passion came to be. How would you define success for Ardently? Part of Ardently’s mission is to bring awareness to how capsule pieces can move from one season to the next. Avoiding fast fashion and buying multiseasonal, capsule clothing ensure clothes avoid a quickly doomed fate of the garbage can. On average, Americans throw out 80 pounds of used clothing a year. Ardently exists to help women shop with a purpose: I want the Ardently customer to leave feeling they will enjoy rewearing their pieces for years to come. If Ardently can help initiate actions in all sustainable living practices, I would consider that a success. What drove you to start a sustainabilityfocused women’s boutique? I love fashion! However, it never seemed to satisfy my need to do something with meaning: Cue the emerging sustainable-fashion market. If everyone supports sustainable-fashion practices, that could amount to a big change in the industry and altogether our environment. What is the biggest myth of shopping sustainably that you’d like to dispel? Sustainable fashion is no longer made of predominately natural fibers or tagged with a

40    November 20, 2020 | LadueNews.com

high price point. Technology in fiber materials and recycling has expanded the options of fabrics used in sustainable fashion. Fiber technologies have allowed for better price points, as well. How would you describe Ardently’s style aesthetic? Ardently’s style is focused on classically designed capsule pieces that not only work well with the existing pieces in someone’s closet but are also fun and easy to wear. Where do you pull inspiration when curating items to stock Ardently’s shelves? A lot of my inspiration comes from European street fashion. Women’s fashion in Europe seems to retain its timeless appeal. Europeans also manage to make everyday

fashion look so effortless yet chic. Are there any top-selling or favorites items you love? Right now, a top-selling item (and my personal favorite) is a recycled acrylic sweater – it comes in a winter white, but never fear! Recycled acrylic is easy to clean.

The Gardener’s Wish List By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

I

t’s holiday gifting time again! Whether you are making a plan for treats for your gardening friends and family or your own wish list, we have put together some timely ideas to inspire you. Online and catalogue shopping has become much more user-friendly over the years, and many major plant and garden supply vendors now offer hard-copy catalogues with gift certificates to recipients with a few keystrokes and a credit card. During one recent damp, gray day, I ordered half a dozen new catalogues for myself to give me some bright and inspirational January reading. Some of my favorites come from the Missouri-based Baker Creek Heirloom Seed, Annie’s Annuals and Perennials, Bluestone Perennials, Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, Burpee’s, Chamblee’s Rose Nursery, Digging Dog Nursery, Forestfarm, Gardener’s Edge at A.M. Leonard, J.L. Hudson, John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds and Select Seeds Antique Flowers. We also have some very fine local nurseries, and a gift certificate from one of them is always appreciated. An essential, but affordable and easy-toassemble, miniature greenhouse makes seed-starting much more successful. When they are rigged with LEDs and electric heat mats, germination rates and overall success increase substantially. Make sure to choose one that is large enough to hold multiple full seed trays and several smaller trays. I used to take mine down at the end of the seeding season, but now it lives in my sunroom year-round and holds seat cushions for the deck furniture. New hand tools are always an appropriate gift for the gardener in your life. Choosing “forever tools” that are easy to sharpen or repair

44    November 20, 2020 | LadueNews.com

is important. My co-columnist, Julie, swears by her folding handsaw from silkysaws.com. I gave my left-handed brother the Felco classic Leftie #9 (felcopruner.net) a few years ago, and it opened a whole new gardening world for him. Good tools need good care, so be sure to get a new leather holster to protect each of them. Felco offers several models, but the sidecar style that also holds your diamond sharpening tool or the double-tool holster that will corral both Felcos and smaller Silky saws will make you quick on the garden draw. My back isn’t what it used to be, so another of my go-to gifts is a folding two-in-one garden kneeler or seat. I prefer one that is sturdy enough for me to put my full weight on but that is still small enough to store easily. There are several brands available, so check the reviews before selecting. Gardening sessions can last longer with less fatigue using this handy gadget. Don’t waste your money on a fancy tool pouch, though, as transferring the pouch can be just an annoyance. Bringing more wildlife into gardens is easy. Add

houses for mason bees and bluebirds to your wish list. Ask for an electric heater for your birdbath. Everyone has room for a squirrel-proof bird feeder. Or how about a new bat house and a fresh bottle of Bat-Nip to attract them? I was delighted to get two big bags of thistle seed as a gift this year – a great thought for those who don’t want more “stuff.” All of these items make great gifts for family or friends (or yourself)!

AGENT PROFILE KIM CARNEY COLDWELL BANKER PREMIER GROUP By Amanda Dahl

L

ooking for a new home led Kim Carney to finding a new career. The family therapist discovered she had a surprising knack for real estate and this newfound joy inspired her to make an even bigger life change than moving to a new property. “I realized that I was doing a better job finding homes than my agent,” she recalls. “I talked to his broker, went to a training class and ended up getting a listing my first day.” Carney continues to apply her master’s degree in counseling as a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Premier Group, particularly when negotiating deals on behalf of her clients. “I learned early on that there was a void in the high-end market, with most agents sticking a sign in the yard and calling that ‘marketing,’” she says. “I developed an aggressive marketing plan that

really works.” Carney’s background also proves beneficial when communicating with clients about proper pricing – something that can be a challenge if the client has unrealistic expectations of their property’s worth. “Pricing in this market is extremely important,” she explains. “My experience and market knowledge is key. I know when a house is going to have multiple offers or when a seller wants to list their home too high.” Carney applies hard work, integrity and persistence to achieve results for clients. She donates 10 percent of her income to charity. Today, 18 years into Carney’s real estate career, the mother of twin 16-year-old daughters still finds renewal of purpose. “I still get that high, like the ‘runner’s high’ though

ancer Support Community Greater St. Louis held its Hope After Dark gala in October at PALM Health in Ladue. The in-person, outdoor “A Night to Celebrate” component of the gala, which followed its “A Day to Give” component, involved a limited guest list and safety precautions with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guests were also invited to participate virtually. Both virtual and in-person guests savored live music, bid on auction items and heard the inspirational story of the 2020 Marsha Wolff-Tina Borchert Inspiration Award recipient, the Peggy and Mike Nelson family. The Hope After Dark fundraising campaign generated more than $225,000. The organization works to provide those impacted by cancer with emotional support, educational resources, social connections and a place of understanding. D

uring times of upheaval and uncertainty, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation has continued to support the children’s hospital in its mission to provide quality health care, and the metro area stepped up to help make that mission possible by supporting the 2020 Glennon Card. The Glennon Card worked alongside more than 250 businesses this year for a 10-day shopping period in October. With the purchase of a $60 Glennon Card, buyers received a 20 percent discount at participating

shops, salons and eateries. The program is organized by the foundation and the Glennon Guild, a 300-plus-member women’s organization. This year marks the 10th year of the Glennon Card, and the program evolved to fit the 2020 landscape by extending registration for businesses open longer and advertising on-floor stickers alongside 6-foot distance recommendations. Last year, the program introduced a digital Glennon Card that proved to be an essential safety feature. The funds raised from the 2020 Glennon Card program go toward clinical improvements to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, including the new Milk Lab for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This dedicated lab space will be used for the custom formulas necessary for the health of more than 700 premature babies cared for by SSM Health Cardinal Glennon each year. Another initiative through the Glennon Card program was the second year of the “Glennon Set.” Kendra Scott Jewelry has partnered with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon and invited a patient to design a set of jewelry as part of the Glennon Card shopping period. This year’s Kendra Scott Glennon Set was designed by patient Anna, pictured here modeling the set. Having spent her life in a wheelchair because of spina bifida, Anna received from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon a second home, where she has gotten to celebrate her recoveries and growth. Anna was excited for the opportunity to design jewelry for the Glennon Card program and give back to the place that gave her so much. Since its creation, the Glennon Card has raised more than $1.73 million for SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Even through unprecedented times, the foundation is grateful for the support of the community in helping keep its mission alive. T

he Wood Shack in St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood features smoked meats, flavorful sandwiches and more between bread in a fast-casual spot that opened in 2017. “We’re basically a sandwich shop that uses smoke as an ingredient with the meats,” chef Chris Delgado says. “We’re smoking everything in house, from our hams and turkeys to carnitas. A lot of people use cherry and hickory. We use peach, mesquite, mulberry and sassafras to impart different flavors.” The menu features a dozen sandwiches, including the chef ’s namesake, the Delgado – a barbecue-shrimp po’boy with pimento cheese, slaw and onion on a French roll with Creole barbecue butter sauce on the side. Another popular pick is the Burley Wich, with adobo pork belly, cotija, guacamole, a sunny-side up brown

egg and pork-rind crunch. Gluten-free buns can be substituted for most sandwiches. “I’m from Arizona, so I do a lot of stuff from the Southwest,” Delgado says. “I’m also infatuated with New Orleans, so you’ll see a lot of those flavors.” In addition to the sandwiches, The Wood Shack offers lighter options including wraps and a few salads, such as Like the Cobb, with mixed greens, tomato, avocado, peppered bacon, hardboiled egg and the diner’s choice of turkey, ham, pulled pork or pulled chicken. “We’re trying to do the best we possibly can to make this a unique spot for Soulard,” Delgado says. “We do everything in house and put as much love as possible into each sandwich.” A curbside-for-two special features two sandwiches, one large side and two sodas for $20. Deals are also available for groups of four and six.

Popular picks include a Cuban sandwich with pulled pork, house ham, creamy mustard, dill pickles and Comté cheese, as well as the Ragin’ Cajun, with maple pecan turkey breast, bourbon bacon jam, Havarti, avocado, lettuce, tomato and creamy pink peppercorn dressing.

ARTS SPEAK

SISTER SUFFRAGETTE By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Image courtesy of Missouri Historical Society Press

D

uring this, the centenary celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, St. Louis’ Missouri Historical Society Press has issued a slim but significant (and altogether splendid) trade paperback by writer Katie J. Moon and illustrator Rori!: Groundbreakers, Rule-Breakers & Rebels: 50 Unstoppable St. Louis Women. The 104-page publication accompanies the Missouri History Museum’s free but ticketed “Beyond the Ballot: St. Louis and Suffrage” exhibition, which opened Aug. 1 and which will run till March 20, 2022. The two-page biographies in Groundbreakers range chronologically from Native American diplomat Aramepinchieue/Marie Rouensa (ca. 1677-1725) to poet Maya Angelou (1928-2014). Bracketed between those two bios are those of everyone from civil rights activist Harriet Scott and educator Susan Blow, through firebrand

journalist Martha Gellhorn and dancer Katherine Dunham, to singer Fontella Bass and politician Harriett Woods. Moon handles with aplomb the unenviable task of encapsulating in just two to four paragraphs each of the lives of the 50 women showcased, while Rori! displays breathtaking ligne claire skill in providing full-figure portraits of the book’s subjects. When asked to specify her favorite among the 50, Moon names Civil War nurse Emily Parsons. “Born into a wealthy family, physically limited, unmarried and quickly approaching middle age, no one could have expected her life to amount to very much,” she says. “But by the age of 40, she was in charge of the medical care of over 2,000 wounded soldiers at Benton Barracks, in the middle of a war zone.” For her part, Rori! cites entertainer Josephine Baker. “I was already a huge fan of Baker’s, and I think I was able to capture a little bit of her

charisma and magic,” she relates. “And the research was really fun, watching old clips of her performances and of her speech in D.C. She was just such an incredible lady – and that smile! It’s one of the most iconic smiles, probably.” Although enjoyable for those of all ages, Groundbreakers likely falls into the young adult reader category. And at a time when the glass ceiling at last seems to be cracking, it may inspire many a modern lass to contemplate adding her own name to some future update of Moon and Rori!’s 50-strong roster.

n Burgundy, France, whereas most appellations – that is, designees under the nation’s appellation d’origine contrôlée system – refer to a specific area, passetoutgrain is a specific type of

wine that can be produced anywhere in Burgundy, from the top of the Côte de Nuits to the bottom of the Macôn. And whereas most wines in these areas of Burgundy are usually made from a single varietal, passetoutgrain is typically made from a blend of pinot noir and Gamay. Passetoutgrain remains something of a well-kept secret among winemakers, who often keep much of it for themselves, and rarely, if ever, would it get imported to the U.S. But thanks to the efforts of a handful of importers, passetoutgrain has made its way here. Of the three barrels produced by Sylvain Morey, 71 cases were imported to the U.S. Morey, son of well-known winemaker Jean-Marc Morey, started his own winery – Bastide du Claux – south of Burgundy in Luberon in 2002. Saint Louis Ballet, The Nutcracker

W

hen the COVID-19 pandemic initially paused life as we knew it, Saint Louis Ballet dancer Lori Wilson knew she had to keep moving – literally. She bought a ballet barre and set up a mini studio in her University City basement, complete with 30 square feet of marley flooring resembling the floors at Saint Louis Ballet’s studios. At class time, she logged into a Zoom videoconference call to receive instruction, dancing virtually alongside her colleagues while hoping the WiFi connection held strong. “Sometimes the music cuts out … It’s important to dance on the music, so that’s kind of an interesting challenge, to keep going even if you can’t hear the music,” Wilson says with a laugh. The end of Saint Louis Ballet’s 201920 season figuratively forced the entire company to dance to an ever-changing beat. Gen Horiuchi, who is celebrating 20 years as artistic director of the nonprofit dance company, decided early in the pandemic to cancel the major April production of Swan Lake to salvage what was left of the marketing budget and ensure minimal financial loss overall. “We were lucky to be able to survive,” Horiuchi reflects. “But immediately I started thinking about ‘All right, what’s coming up for us?’” In September, Saint Louis Ballet dancers returned to the studio to train in person with various safety protocols in place, including wearing masks and limiting the number of people in each studio. Instead of a large-scale performance, Horiuchi opted to open the 2020-21 season with an original, more personal ballet he choreographed entitled This Is Who We Are, which premiered online in October and is currently streaming on YouTube. The majority of performances within this ballet were solos, with only a few intentionally selected couples performing duets or pas de deux to prevent potential COVID-19 outbreaks. The holiday Nutcracker tradition will live on similarly, with prerecorded performances streaming on select The Big Muddy Dance Company dates in December, starting Dec. 12. The Nutcracker Extravaganza promises “favorite Nutcracker scenes from former productions interspersed with new Nutcracker performances on the Touhill [Performing Arts Center] stage,” as well as behind-the-scenes content, according to a press release. Patrons will have the option to support Saint Louis Ballet through related shopping and dining experiences. In the metro area, The Big Muddy Dance Company has taken a similar approach to moving forward amid the pandemic, executive director Erin Prange says. But instead of canceling plans in the spring, the company postponed major events like its Moves and Grooves production and The Big Muddy Ball to the fall. Both proceeded online-only with creative twists. “Moving to those virtual platforms for the past couple of months has really made us think outside the box,” Prange says.

The Big Muddy Ball fundraiser featured prerecorded and livestreamed performances but wasn’t totally void of in-person interaction. Prange says dancers safely delivered meals to patrons’ homes and gave brief performances in their front yards. “[We’re] trying to find unique and innovative ways to keep people engaged and excited about what’s going on,” she explains. For Saint Louis Ballet’s video performances, Horiuchi explains how multiple cameras will be used to capture diverse angles, saying: “I thought this would be an opportunity to offer another side of our performances. I would even consider this on a regular basis – streaming performances even after the pandemic is over, maybe once a year or once every other year. This way I can reach out to people outside of our community.” Prange echoes this sentiment. “It’s made us dig a little deeper into making sure that we reach [the audience], as opposed to them coming to us,” she says. The Big Muddy Dance Company’s 2020-21 season marks its 10th anniversary season and a time of reinvention. “It’s not in our wheelhouse to create segments of dance for film,” Prange says. “It’s something we’ve had to kind of hone in [on] during this pandemic.” The company will engage in person with patrons the weekend of Friday, Nov. 20, with its re-imagined Lemp Legends program at Lemp Mansion and Lemp Grand Hall. Dancers, socially distanced from the masked audience of four to eight people, will lead patrons through a walking tour of the mansion, with vignette performances in different rooms. A virtual experience is available, as well. “It’s very much an immersive experience,” Prange says. “They get to not only see the story of these people, but they’re actually in their home. I think it’ll actually end up being even better than what the original production was supposed to be.” Saint Louis Ballet and The Big Muddy Dance Company have performances planned for the new year, but leaders are hesitant to guarantee in-person viewing. Saint Louis Ballet does not charge for virtual performances but hopes patrons will give to the company’s Dancers First Critical Relief Fund. Horiuchi says the $150,000 donation goal reflects the amount needed to get through the current season with minimum ticket revenue. “I felt like we still need to be proactive – continue performing so that we are still part of the community,” Horiuchi says. “We keep moving forward.” To give to either company, visit stlouisballet.org or thebigmuddydanceco.org, and select the Support tab.
