EDITOR ‌NOW THAT OUR TUMMIES ARE FULL OF TURKEY AND OUR stretchy pants have indeed, ahem, stretched, it’s time to swap out our festive fall décor for something more wintry and whimsical. Whether you’re ready to go all out for decorating for the upcoming holiday or you’re hoping to keep things sleek and simple, local designers from Savvy Surrounding Style, Twigs & Moss and Gigi Lombrano Interiors have some painless pointers to help you achieve both. Starting on p. 25, we hope you enjoy their expert advice, as shared by LN contributing writer Brittany Nay. olvo sets a standard. It is always considered the head of its class – and that is because the fleet of vehicles sets out to pave the way for a level of quality to which all manufacturers should aspire. “If you ask people what makes Volvo superior, it comes down to the strong desire to build the safest cars,” says Stephen Lynch, general sales manager at West County Volvo Cars. “In the last four years since the XC90 has come out, not only is Volvo leading in safety technology, it has added a beautiful design and simplistic interior that stands out and wins award after award.” West County Volvo Cars is no stranger to awards either. The dealership, under the umbrella of the Suntrup Automotive Group, has won the Volvo Excellence Award three out of the last four years. The special recognition is given to only 30 dealers out of 300 in the United States for being top in service, sales and customer satisfaction. “We’re always in the running,” boasts Lynch. “It has been our philosophy since forever that we design everything around the customer. The thing that stands out most about us [is our consistency]. Out of 50 employees, we have 14 who have been here for more than 20 years, and another 10 who have been around for more than 10 years. Our management team has a combined 20 years of experience at this dealership.” Volvo sales continue to rise, reaching double digits when other brands have fallen behind. “It all [stems] from the new design, which incorporates safety and Scandinavian simplicity,” describes Lynch. The vehicle marries function and form, valuing streamlined efficiency over excessiveness. Following suit, the dealership is undergoing a renovation with a design that promises the same neat, clean construction that is so prized in the vehicles themselves. Set for completion in the spring of 2019, a giant glass wall opens the space and creates an inviting, comfortable atmosphere for the clientele. The style may have adapted at Volvo, but there is one constant you can count on. “Safety features are standard across the board,” notes Lynch. “In the United States, people are buying SUVs, [making] the XC40, the XC60 and the XC90 models by far the most popular. You can get any model with top-of-the-line features, from the stereos to the interiors.” This is your invitation to enjoy the ride. Visit West County Volvo Cars and step into a Volvo today. The lively, festive evening featured beer, wine, German fare, live and silent auctions, and a visit by an AnheuserBusch Clydesdale. This is the 19th annual Fall Fling event for Ladue Early Childhood Center. This evening is important to help raise funds to support programs and purchase materials for teachers, classrooms and the school. Money raised in past years has supported cultural enrichment, school library, playground renovation and the school garden. This year, the funds will support teacher grants, such as materials for a new school STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] area and new equipment for our school gym.

AWARDS DINNER Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett

T

he Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, a nonprofit environmental law firm that seeks to preserve and protect the environment and public health, held its annual awards dinner in mid-October. Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a buffet dinner in the Twilight Room at St. Louis’ Moonrise Hotel on Delmar Boulevard. David Bohm and Beatrice Clemens presented this year’s winners, Maxine Lipeles and Tom “Yusha” Sager, with the Lewis C. Green Environmental Service Award. Bruce Morrison and Kathleen Henry emceed.

It was a great honor for Great Rivers to present the 2018 Lewis C. Green award to two amazing people, Maxine and Yusha, who have dedicated their lives to protecting the environment and promoting public health. I am humbled by the work both of them have done in making Missouri a better place to raise a family. I am also thankful to have had the opportunity to work with both of them at Great Rivers in pursuit of the greater good. As Lewis Green often said, ‘The environment can’t protect itself; somebody’s got to do it.’ I think this even was a celebration of the truth of Lewis’ statement in a time where environmental and public health values are not given the priority they deserve.

ARTCHITECTURE – WHERE ART & ARCHITECTURE RESIDE Photos and story by Diane Anderson

L

andmarks Association of St. Louis recently held its annual gala, titled “ARTchitecture – Where Art & Architecture Reside” – at a private home on Longfellow Avenue in St. Louis. Guests enjoyed cocktails and light bites, followed by the presentation of the H. Meade Summer Jr. Award to Mary Strauss on behalf of the Strauss Family Legacy. Strauss and the family were honored for the astounding contributions they have made and continue to make to building and restoring a unique, historic and vital St. Louis. For nearly 60 years, the association has argued that the architectural heritage of St. Louis constitutes an irreplaceable cultural and economic asset – about which, fortunately, members of the Strauss family agree.

Mary Strauss and the Strauss Family Legacy have made a tremendous impact on historic preservation in the St. Louis area. In the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, Leon and Mary Strauss were deeply involved in historic rehabilitation efforts on a scale that was utterly without precedent in St. Louis. From DeBaliviere Place to The Fox Theatre to downtown, the work of Pantheon Corporation, Leon and Mary demonstrated that St. Louis’ great neighborhoods and iconic buildings could not only be saved from the wrecking ball but once again become thriving urban centers of culture and community.

Design

ELEMENTS

UPDATED TRADITIONAL By Robyn Dexter

A

s Dottie Eaton of Design Style worked her way through redoing the main floor of this Town and Country home, she was tasked with updating the client’s family room. The space had a country French feel to it, which had been popular at the time it was designed. But the years had passed, and it was time to bring a new look to the space. Eaton’s client wanted to bring the room’s look up to date, still incorporating traditional elements but in a modern way. “We were going for a Ralph Lauren/Town & Country kind of look,” Eaton says. They removed everything that had previously been in the room and brought in all-new furniture. Incorporating a strawlike color, they selected a glass lamp, a table from Interlude Home, a zebra rug and a variety of Ralph Lauren and Kravet fabrics. After reworking the fireplace and reupholstering a chair for the client’s cat to watch the birds, the long and narrow room is more “inviting and warm,” Eaton says.

Area designers share tips to transform your home’s bountiful

Thanksgiving cornucopia into a winter wonderland. Thanksgiving centerpiece above and winter centerpiece below designed by Savvy Surrounding Style | Photo by Megan Lorenz Photo

A

mid the hustle and bustle of the season, achieving a beautiful and inviting holiday display in your home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a lofty goal. So whether it’s decking out your home’s entryway, living room mantel or dining room table this holiday season, local designers from Savvy Surrounding Style, Twigs & Moss and Gigi Lombrano Interiors have some painless pointers to transition your autumnal Thanksgiving harvest into a festive Yuletide. The day of giving thanks is known for its range of rust-colored hues, while splashes of red and green commonly signal Christmastime, so choosing a less-traditional color for both Thanksgiving and Christmas makes it easy to transition your home’s cornucopia of holiday décor, says Diane Mantovani Fogerty, owner and principal designer at Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue. “Metallic [silvers and golds] work for both holidays, as do shades of ivory, copper and white,” she says. Gigi Lombrano, owner and creative director at Gigi Lombrano Interiors in Chesterfield, echoes that while the classic red-and-green color combination is always popular for Christmas, it often doesn’t mix with the existing décor. “Go for gold [for both Thanksgiving and Christmas] to add that touch of classic tradition and be on trend at the same time, [then] mix in a little white and silver to add color,” she says. From your home’s entryway to its living and dining rooms, some décor can serve double-duty throughout the harvest and holiday seasons. In the living room, magnolia leaves can be showcased on a mantel and then repurposed as a Christmas wreath for a mantelscape or tablescape, Mantovani Fogerty says. “White birch is a great Thanksgiving accent piece, either in a planter or on a dining table, with gourds and pumpkins interspersed,” she adds. “The same birch can be strung with lights for the Christmas holiday.” Candelabras are beautiful on a mantel or tabletop for both holidays, Mantovani Fogerty notes. “You can use a cranberry or gold candle for Thanksgiving, and then change to whatever color you are using for Christmas – whether it’s a traditional red or green, or navy, cream or silver.” And silver and gold, as well as monochrome holiday trees, are on trend this year, further streamlining the décor conversion post-Thanksgiving, Mantovani Fogerty adds. “Choose [silver or gold] and use ornaments and sprays in different shapes, textures and

sizes,” she says. “This makes for a great ‘designer-looking’ tree.” However, if styling your home for Thanksgiving has zapped your energy to the point you choose to forgo the big holiday tree, Lombrano recommends simply swapping out Thanksgiving’s seasonal flowers, festive doormat and front door wreath with their Christmas-themed counterparts. Similarly, Lombrano says the layers of holiday décor throughout your home can simply be switched between Thanksgiving and Christmastime seasonal items, from decorative pillow covers and throws in your living room to ribbon-wrapped candles in your dining room and vases (filled with fall gourds for Thanksgiving and shimmering ornaments for Christmas) and greenery on tablescapes and mantelscapes. “[The holidays] is the one time of year where more helps to bring the season,” she says. Resito Pecson, owner and designer at Twigs & Moss in Clayton, says avoiding traditional holiday trends and using natural elements are simple steps in the shift from Thanksgiving to Christmas decorations. “You can’t go wrong when using components found in nature,” he says. “The warmth [of natural elements, such as pine cones] will always add a sense of comfort to your holiday décor.” Pecson says the Twigs & Moss twig wreath with pine cones is a good example of a transitional holiday piece. “Our ‘laurel’ wreath, made with interlocking manzanita twigs, with a highlight of pine cones, exemplifies these design principles beautifully,” he says. As for the ideal time to transition your home’s holiday displays, Mantovani Fogerty recommends the weekend or week after Thanksgiving. And because completing a holiday décor project is much like pulling together a design in a room or throughout a home, Mantovani Fogerty advises consulting an expert designer when in need of help planning and executing your decorating transition: “[Designers can] add the unique touches that create a beautiful, creative and unique holiday.” Savvy Surrounding Style, 9753 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-432-7289, savvyladue.com Twigs & Moss, 7715 Clayton Road, Clayton, 314-454-0447, facebook.com/twigsandmoss Gigi Lombrano Interiors, 101 La Gorce Drive, Chesterfield, 314-707-7291

Trending TransiTions Staying up-to-date with trends also means being up-to-date on the latest in education —EDUCATION IS KEY in the beauty industry.Thankfully, our partnership with L’Oreal Professionnel has allowed us the opportunity to send different groups of stylists across the globe to learn the latest techinques straight from the World’s top stylists. Two of our in-house mentors: Suzanne Spurgeon and Laura Zoellner each have travelled with L’oreal this year —Suzanne to New York and Laura to Rome and brought back the forecasted trends for Fall and Winter 2018-2019. For the current fall and winter seasons, Laura is most obsessed with soft blended tones, of glossy, multi-dimensional color. She puts the focus on creating an enriched color that flatters her client’s individual skin-tone. For those that are looking for some fun she recommends,“a flash of rose gold or bronze tones to enhance your multi-highlighted colors.” For those looking to make a more drastic statement, Suzanne is currently in love with warm, riche REDS from all ends of the color spectrum. From copper, ginger, and auburn all the way to deep burgundy our master colorists will create your perfect shade of red.Any platinum blondes out there interested? If so, this trend is a great option if you are wanting to go darker while still keeping the warmth you are accustomed to.

MAKING A CHANGE THIS SEASON DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN A DRASTIC ONE.

For blondes wanting to make the transition but still maintain their hard earned bright locks, think about adding a shadow root. By using a technique called ‘gloss smuding’ our stylists can create depth at the base that in turn naturally brings out the brightness in the ends. In as little as 10 minutes or less our stylists can mix up and apply the perfect gloss to transition your summer color to new looks of Winter. If you are a little nervous about making a change, have no fear! Feel free to reserve a consultation along with your service. CONSULTATIONS ARE ALWAYS COMPLIMENTARY and they are a great way to get to know your stylist and to create a game plan before getting started.

STYLES FROM 90’S ARE BACK AND WERE AREN’T MAD ABOUT IT.

Like it or not, the 90’s are making a resurgance in the fashion and beauty industries. For now, expect to start to see shags cuts coming back into play. This look can work for anyone whether you are wanting to keep your hair long with lean texture, opt for a shattered bob or add in a set of shaggy curtain bangs. Rest assured while we embrace the trends of the 90’s you still won’t be seeing any chunky highlights or bowl cuts coming out of a Branca salon anytime soon. Not ready to change your cut? Other ways to rock the 90’s trend is through your accessories. Skip the butterfly clips and instead try slipping in a beautiful barette for a sweet look or stacking bobby pins to create a bolder statement piece —you can even keep it simple with a cute headband or scrunchie.

TIPS FOR ACHIEVING YOUR IN-SALON LOOK AT HOME.

Spurgeon: If your curls always seem to fall by midday, blow-dry your hair with a round brush prior to curling with your iron. Doing so will make them last longer and have more shine. Zoellner: If you are striving for the perfect blowout, tackle the tough cowlicks and natural parts first that way they don’t have time to dry in their natural patterns!

STYLISTS’ GO-TO PRODUCTS.

Spurgeon: L’Oreal Professionnel’s Next Day Hair + Kérastase’s Créme Magistral Zoellner: Kérastase’s Densifique Densimorphose Mousse OUR GIFT TO YOU: A custom complimentary Gloss & Shine Treatment with your Fall/ Winter color appointment. Give us a call to reserve your next appointment and to take advantage of this offer!

hen the new adam foster fine jewelry storefront opens later this year, visiting clients will quickly pick up on the similarities between the designed space and the work of the designer. specifically, the showroom has been meticulously designed to provide an elevated and personal experience from the moment you enter. “i think you should experience the jewelry as well as experience buying the jewelry, and it doesn’t have to cost more to do that,” foster, the company’s namesake, says. “when you walk into a store, it should be just as exciting for you to talk about that as it is to talk about as the thing that you bought.”

That “thing” you’ll buy, if you’re unfamiliar with Foster’s work, is a custom-created, handmade luxury piece of jewelry created and manufactured locally. And that storefront you’ll be walking into? It’s the realization of a career-spanning dream. That dream began in south St. Louis – in a 10-foot-square studio, to be exact – before moving to a 2,400-square-foot space on the municipality’s Hill neighborhood, then to Clayton, then to a minimalist studio in Brentwood before finally settling into its current studio and soon-tobe completed storefront in Frontenac, set to open by the end of the year. Foster, the St. Louis-born and -raised man meeting you at the door, is immediately welcoming. In fact, his penchant for the personal, coupled with his constantly evolving expertise, has shaped his 15-year jewelry career and made his eponymous line what it is today: an internationally sought-after brand showcased at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as a host of smaller independent jewelers across the country. Foster’s two main collections, the Constellatioon Collection and the Plume Collection, both speak to his unique aesthetic and taste. The former collection features hand engraving and gem faceting, and recalls the attentive artistry of the Italian Renaissance and old-world Italy – a country which Foster visits often, to which he shares a family connection and which inspired his lifelong love of craftsmanship. The latter collection was created out of Foster’s love of the outdoors, with pieces inspired by the intricate detail and uniqueness of each feather on various birds he observes during weekend trips to the countryside. Outside of his collections, the designer regularly creates bespoke pieces, crafted specifically to the individual personality of the wearer. “I like to think of it as modern jewelry with a nod to the past,” Foster says of his aesthetic. “We’re looking for these pieces of jewelry that will stay in your collection and be passed down; they are heritage. I look at it not as much as jewelry, but as a ork of art.” That’s not to say his jewelry isn’t meant to fit your personal lifestyle. “We make jewelry that is meant to fit in well with other jewelry,” Foster says. “My goal is not for it to be, ‘This is my jewelry; it doesn’t play well with everybody else.’ My goal is to be part of a larger collection – that you can wear an Adam Foster cuff with Verdura earrings or something else that you inherited or bought at an auction, and it all fits well together.” Ensuring everything fits and that you’re satisfied is not a process Foster and his team take lightly. Visits are by appointment only, with referrals encouraged, because Foster and his team want to prepare for your visit. you’re looking forr “That’s so we can make sure that if you something specific, say, diamond jewelry, we can call back every piece of diamond jewelry we think you might be interested in from all over the world so it’s here for you to view,” Foster says. For those interested in a custom piece, once you’ve decided on what you want (the metal, shape, budget, design and even exact stone), the design process takes four to six weeks, with Foster and his team using everything from hand-drawn sketches to digital renderings so advanced they look like photographs to 3D models you can try on for scale. And soon, this process will be made all the more enjoyable by the showroom’s atmosphere. Designed by locally based award-winning architecture and design firm Arcturis, it features skylights – natural light is a must – a fully stocked bar, and a dining room and living area. These elements are meant for all visitors to enjoy but will especially come in handy for special events hosted in the space, including the

already-scheduled jewelry-themed book club dinner, a festive baby shower and an evening with one of Foster’s dealers from Africa, who will visit and discuss his craft of mining with a small group of enthusiasts. Even the way Foster intends to display his work in the showroom is unique. “Everyone talks about how retail is dead, but that’s because going to a store these days is boring,” Foster says. Translation: You won’t find neck forms donning pendants or the standard velvet sleeve of bracelets atop glass cases here. Instead, picture one-of-a-kind jewelry imaginatively showcased in season-specific scenes and dioramas, not unlike curated museum exhibitions. For pieces that are meant to be cherished as works of art, the treatment fits. And for the designer who wants to make shopping exciting again, it’s all about the experience. “I believe that when you come in to my space, I’m hosting you,” Foster says. “I’m concerned with how you enter the space, how you feel, what you smell, what you hear, how you enjoy the space. From the moment you walk in, it’s hopefully unlike any other store you’ve ever been in.” Adam Foster Fine Jewelry, 601 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Third Floor, Frontenac, 314-771-3390, fosterjewelry.com

hanksgiving marks a time for family and friends, a time to reflect on all we have and to give thanks for all the blessings we’ve been given. On a broader scale, this can also be a time to dream about what can be – not just for ourselves, but for our community and society as a whole. In our routine-filled lives, we’ve become so accustomed to everyday duties that we’ve forgotten the integral mental exercise of dreaming. Dreaming allows us to transcend present circumstances and see a future of possibilities. Dreaming strengthens us to face today’s challenges and to push forward toward the promise of tomorrow. So I must ask – where are all the dreamers? A dream fulfilled can be a wonderful thing, but many of us don’t know how to dream. We dream too small. Often our dreams involve just us. We dream about professional growth, personal accomplishments – everything’s focused on what benefits us alone. But why? What about our obligation to the greater good of society? If your dreams focus only on you, then you’re dreaming too small. The metro area needs dream-weavers – visionaries

How will your dreams help make the metro area a better place to live and work? Unfortunately, for many of us, dreaming ends when we wake. COMMUNICATION CONVERSATION

Clichés? No Way!

H

By Janis Murray

ow many times have you heard in the media, “And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!” It’s a cliché that simply means there’s more to say on the subject, but we don’t know definitely yet. Clichés are basically phrases that have been used so often they’re basically meaningless fillers – boring, old, a reason to turn off. As a corporate communication trainer, I used to string them together like this (with credit to the late Tripp Frohlichstein, Kirkwood media guru): “Clichés are like a 10-foot pole, cross that bridge when you come to it, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” Audiences got the point and laughed, then realized they were guilty, too. Don’t waste time. Say what you really mean. Acronyms fall under the same category. For example, what does ADA mean? If you just throw that out there in a speech, the meaning to each person depends on his or her own personal experience. For example, the most frequent answer among my clients is the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you’re a teacher, it may be average daily attendance. So potentially the people you’re speaking to are confused until you define your term – a very important and worthy use of four seconds before the use of the acronym. For example, “According to the American Dairy Association, the ADA … ” Another cliché is when individuals say, “No problem.” Say I walk into a gas station and make my cup of morning coffee, then take my precious creation to the cashier. I give him my $2, and he gives me change. After I say, “Thank you” in this scenario, he says, “No problem.” Imagine rather than him saying, “No problem,” though, he says, “You’re welcome.” It’s subliminal, really, but as the customer, do I want to be a “problem” or feel “welcome”? Avoiding clichés and acronyms brings your remarks up to date and makes them much more understandable quickly. Quick and concise are essential today. Replace mindless phrases with short sentences with active verbs that get right to the point. Accepting old, overused phrases can be a problem and a worry impeding clear communication – and that’s no cliché!

Avoiding clichés and acronyms brings your remarks up to date and makes them much more understandable quickly.

our smile speaks for you before a single word escapes your mouth, and having stained teeth harms your image. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking are among the most common culprits when it comes to tarnishing an otherwise gleaming smile. If you are not able to brush your teeth immediately after consuming substances that can stain teeth or would prefer not to drink your coffee through a straw to prevent it from contacting your tooth enamel, you do have options. Teeth whitening, whether done by a dentist or at home, can make a significant difference in your appearance. “I like to tailor my whitening recommendations to each patient’s specific needs and goals,” says Dr. Emily Johnson of Magnolia Family Dental in Kirkwood. “We offer three different professional whitening options in our practice. These include in-office whitening treatments, take-home whitening in custom-fitted trays and a quick, easy take-home alternative, which does not require dental impressions.” Each option, though, involves application of a professional-strength whitening gel. “They each have a similar mechanism of action but vary in the strength and length of time the gel stays on the teeth,” Johnson says. Heather Tarticchio, dental hygiene coordinator at Kirkwood Station Dental, notes that almost all patients can tolerate these types of whitening options without pain or excessive sensitivity. Crowns and veneers cannot be whitened, and in rare cases, the tooth enamel may be too thin or fragile. But the only downside for most people is the risk of some slight tooth sensitivity or gum irritation that can last a day or two because of the peroxide in the whitening gel. “Patients will often see the most immediate results with our in-office whitening system, but then can follow up with at-home treatments to touch up as needed,” Johnson says. “I recommend this to patients who may want the fastest results for an event coming up soon, who may not have time to whiten at home.” Tarticchio adds that this option uses a light-emitting diode to activate the gel and takes only 20 to 30 minutes, making it a popular technique. Kirkwood Station Dental charges $99 for an in-office whitening session, and teeth are usually brightened a couple of shades, she says. How long results last depends on each patient and his or her habits. For instance, daily coffee drinkers may opt to have their teeth whitened again sooner than those who do not consume coffee or other

potentially staining products. “Many patients see results right away with our take-home whitening products, as well, which are our most popular option and my favorite, as well,” Johnson says. “They can choose to apply the gel daily or at their convenience at home, typically for one to two weeks.” Tarticchio notes that this option, in which dental impressions are taken in order to create custom-fitted trays that patients fill with whitening gel and then wear for two to four hours, depending on the strength of the gel, costs about $300 at her office for the custom trays and first tube of gel. However, patients can purchase additional gel and use the trays on an ongoing basis as needed. “If someone has never whitened their teeth in the past, I recommend trying our on-the-go introductory whitening product,” Johnson says. “This includes 10 prefilled whitening tray sets for the cost of $75 and only needs to be worn for 15 minutes.” If peroxide gels and trays are not appealing, whitening toothpastes can help. “We sell a product called AP 24 Whitening Toothpaste,” Tarticchio says. “It doesn’t contain peroxide, so it’s good for people who have more sensitive teeth.” Like most other whitening toothpastes, AP 24 works as a mild abrasive, polishing off outer stains. Johnson cautions patients to research whitening toothpastes and use only products bearing the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. “Some of the whitening toothpastes that promise instant, dramatic results can be very abrasive and could potentially cause irreversible damage to the enamel,” she says. “There are some over-the-counter whitening strips available from major companies, as well. These can be effective; however, some patients have reported that they see a quicker rebound in staining or that they experience more sensitivity or gum irritation. For the same cost, I recommend patients start whitening with a professional-grade product that they can purchase from their dentist. It is very important to have routine examinations of your teeth by a dental professional to minimize any complications or side effects.” Both Johnson and Tarticchio recommend asking your dentist about whitening options to ensure the product is appropriate for your teeth, your lifestyle and your budget. “There’s a lot we can do,” Tarticchio says. “No one needs to live with a smile they aren’t happy with.” Kirkwood Station Dental, 200 S. T

he area’s first Krab Kingz Seafood has had diners scuttling for crab legs and other signature boiled dishes since it opened early in September on Delmar Boulevard near St. Louis’ west-central edge. The idea for the franchise originated in Houston three years ago, with roughly 15 locations in total today. Coowner and St. Louis native Craig Scott – who also owns two other franchises in Kansas City – partnered with childhood friend Cortez Burnett and O. Lamar Jackson to bring the brand to enthusiastic locals. “The community has welcomed us with open arms by coming out and supporting us,” Scott says. “We’re

just really happy to be able to bring St. Louis a goodquality seafood restaurant and to share our recipe and how we do it.” “When people enter the restaurant, we greet them and make them smile,” Burnett adds. “We make them become part of our family.” The 3,200-square-foot casual eatery seats around 65. A predictably nautical theme fills the dining area with warm tones, images of crustaceans and seaside décor. Guests place their orders at the counter and choose from six seafood platters to enjoy on-site or to go. “We concentrate on having a small variety and doing that well,” Scott says. “We pride ourselves on cooking

our items to just the right temperature. It’s going to be perfectly spiced – not too hot or mild. Once you add butter sauce, it really just wakens up the food and gives it an extra kick. This particular style comes from the Miami area and is very flavorful.” The platters feature three central options: Alaskan snow crab, Gulf shrimp or lobster tails. Guests can get each item alone or mix and match according to their preferences. Each entrée comes with sausage, corn and potatoes, and a hard-boiled egg also accompanies most options. All items are cooked in the company’s proprietary boil seasoning blend, finished with a given guest’s flavoring

butter of choice: original, lemon-pepper, honey-garlic, Cajun or spicy. So regardless of whether guests visit for the original or succumb to a craving for something with a bit more kick, all options sound great before a viewing of All Is Calm from Mustard Seed Theatre. “Our portion sizes are huge, and our prices are very affordable,” says Scott, who intends to open a couple of other locations in Missouri, including a second St. Louis storefront. “We’re just really excited to be here.”

Krab Kingz Seafood St. Louis, 5860 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis,

‌Story:  Five months after the outbreak of World War I, a number of Allied soldiers (represented by English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish combatants) and German troops positioned in trenches alongside “no man’s land” in Europe stopped fighting for a brief but poignant period on Christmas Eve 1914. Tentative and leery of each other at first, the two groups slowly emerged from their rat-infested trenches to extend holiday greetings across the battlefield. They sang songs, exchanged simple gifts and even participated in an impromptu soccer game on the frozen terrain. Later, they were admonished by superiors for this “breach” of protocol in warfare, which was never repeated due to threats of disciplinary action. But for several hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 1914, four years before the conclusion of “The War to End All Wars,” soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict dared to show their shared humanity on a becalmed battlefield. Highlights:  Impeccably directed by Mustard Seed Theatre artistic director Deanna Jent, along with musical director Joe Schoen, this hauntingly beautiful and deceptively “simple” one-hour musical is masterfully performed for a fifth time by an ensemble of nine gifted performers. Other Info:  An enormously popular production when first performed by Mustard Seed in 2013, All Is Calm won five St. Louis Theater Circle awards, including Best Musical and Best Ensemble in a Musical. This year’s presentation features a cast whose crystalclear voices and handy way around accents and dialects make All Is Calm once again an affecting experience. Peter Rothstein, artistic director of Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis, spent two years researching this historical incident at museums and libraries in Belgium and England. Collaborating with Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach, former members of the Minneapolis-based male, vocal chamber ensemble known as Cantus, they created the a cappella musical All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 in 2007. The script is based on letters and observations of men who served in those trenches, while the tunes are a collection of traditional carols and folk songs as well as melodies popular in the early 20th century. Since Jent first presented All Is Calm in 2013, audiences have embraced this poignant, fact-based musical. The message of friendship and peace conveyed by soldiers on both sides of the terrible war fought a century ago remains timeless and inspiring. Each of the men in the cast – some new, some veterans of this sobering, one-act piece – gets the chance to do solo work, and all of them take advantage of the opportunity, such as Anthony Heinemann utilizing his beautiful operatically trained tenor. They

By Mark Bretz

also verbalize the hopes and wishes of ordinary men placed in a most undesirable situation. The cast features a number of singers who have appeared in at least one previous edition of Mustard Seed’s All Is Calm franchise, namely Kent Coffel, Christopher Hickey, Greg Lhamon, Gerry Love and Jeffrey Wright. They’re joined by newcomers Micheal Lowe, Sean Michael and Abraham Shaw, all of whom shine while singing Christmas carols, as well as traditional folk songs and tunes from the World War I era. Throughout the performance, Jent uses the entire stage to expand the geographical imprint of the soldiers’ gestures of kindness, especially affecting in how she positions the various troops as they enter the stage. Schoen’s musical direction is tight and telling in how each performer shapes his songs. Their tunes turn depressingly discordant after the soldiers are ordered to cease and desist the mutual camaraderie, with an English bugle call sounding a somber finality to their spontaneous civility. All Is Calm is an excellent choice for a holiday show, as it underscores what the spirit of Christmas was meant to be. This fifth Mustard Seed rendition does so in a touching and tuneful manner that’s both poignant and polished.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne

‌2014 MUGA, RESERVA – RIOJA, SPAIN Grape: 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano Owners/Winemakers: Three generations of the Muga family Approximate Retail Price: $25 Website: bodegasmuga.com TASTING NOTES: Color: Intensely dark, leaning toward ruby, reflective and opaque but not cloudy Aroma: Dark fruits, black cherry, peppery with strong but not overpowering oak with a slight, tantalizing earthiness Taste: Rich black cherry following through, soft dark fruits lingering in the finish, slight tannins and good acidity

A

lthough the Muga Winery wasn’t founded until 1932, the Muga family has been associated with winemaking in Spain’s Rioja region since the 17th century.

Muga sources its fruit from five separate vineyards throughout Rioja. Each vineyard enjoys a unique microclimate, which provides a wide range of influences on grape production, from the soil, through Atlantic, Mediterranean and landlocked winds, to elevation and solar exposure. In its winemaking process, Muga uses only oak, with no stainless steel or concrete, starting with fermentation in large oak casks, then secondary fermentation and aging in smaller barrels. The winery boasts the rare feature of having its own cooperage, a facility devoted to the art of barrel-making, with every barrel produced for Muga wines made in-house. Although Muga doesn’t filter the wine, it does “fine” it – add a substance (the fining agent) to the wine to create a variable bond with suspended particles, yielding bigger molecules and particles that will precipitate out of the wine easier and faster. (Traditionally, egg whites serve as the fining agent, although alternate

materials sometimes serve to make wines “friendlier” to vegans.) Muga regularly produces a white, two rosados, two cavas and five reds, with nary a dud among them. All of its wines represent the more traditional flavors and attributes of Rioja wine, with the reds easily the epitome of quality wine from the region. The Reserva, under consideration here, ages for 24 months in oak and at least a year in the bottle before being released. A delicious, easy-drinking and flavorful red, it can be drunk year-round – and it’s affordable, to boot! Collectors might wish to watch for the Prado Enea Gran Reserva or the Aro. In spring and summer, the white and rosados should disappear from your patio all too quickly. Food Pairings: This wine pairs splendidly with aged meats, veal, stews and flavorful soups, and medium-soft cheeses.

Christa Gleich was never torn about the technique she wanted to use for her custom art and invitation business, and her passion shines in the colorful masterpieces she crafts with care.

here are jungles, farms and seascapes inside Christa Gleich’s studio, colorful worlds of her own creation contained in frames. To craft each scene, she tears strips of bright paper and arranges them into friendly monsters, as well as whales, lighthouses and boats. Her process is thoughtful, yet straightforward: It’s simply torn. It’s no coincidence that Simply Torn Art + Design is also the name of her one-woman business. She sells custom event invitations and stationery. In a world that’s increasingly digital, Gleich has found a market of customers who appreciate art on the printed page. “People said books would die, and they’re still alive and well,” she says. “This work makes me appreciate paper even more, and I love that I can share that with my clients.” Gleich has always had a captive audience for her art, from her mother (who found her drawing on the walls at the age of 3, when she was supposed to be napping) to her classmates at Springfield’s Missouri State University, where she studied graphic design. Although she focused on layouts, it was in college that she first experimented with the torn technique for a project. “My mom always jokes that she can’t draw a straight line, and I can’t either, and that’s why I do this illustration type,” she says. “It’s so forgiving.” The torn technique, she says, reminds people that perfection is not the most important quality in any piece of art or, for that matter, in any person. Beauty can be found in imperfections. It’s with that philosophy in mind that, while she was working full time at a print shop, Gleich experimented with creating prints featuring rocket ships, animals and dancers – cards and prints meant to appeal to both parents and children, and all “children at heart.” Her mother later suggested she try wedding invitations, which Gleich says she was skeptical about. But she enjoyed creating them at the print shop and collaborating with clients on their color palettes and visions for their big days. She found a market for her designs, both through her website and

at craft shows, and decided to make her side hustle her full-time gig in May. “It’s always a risk setting off full time, which is why I did it on the side to see what the market was like,” she says. “And I built up more and more clients being repeat customers. Customers come to me when they’re getting married and then return when they’re expecting, so I follow their life journeys with them.” Since going full time, Gleich says she’s transitioned primarily to doing event invitations and wedding suites, and has acquired many customers through word-of-mouth referrals. The invitations are entirely custom, and Gleich sits down with her clients to ensure a collaborative process. As part of her offerings, Gleich designs custom stationery, including save-the-dates, event and wedding invitations, day-of pieces and even thank-you cards for her clients. Depending on each couple’s deadline, the design process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a little over a month. She currently meets with clients at her store on Big Bend Boulevard in Shrewsbury, though she says she is looking for another location to expand her growing business. Her products are also available online. “The wedding invitations and save-the-dates are the first things guests see,” she says. “I got married almost a year ago – I went through that whole process – so I love that I can be part of people’s big days.” She’s also found support in the small-business community in St. Louis and has found that other small-business wedding vendors, from photographers to cake decorators, have used her in their referrals, and she has reciprocated. “St. Louis is such a great place to be as a small business,” she said. “People always joke about asking, ‘Where did you go to high school?’ But I love that we all feel connected and networked in that way. I’ve been so happy to grow my business here.” Simply Torn Art + Design, 7616 S. Big Bend Blvd., 2nd Floor, Shrewsbury, 314-471-4842, simplytornart.com Photos courtesy of simply torn art + Design
