from the
EDITOR AS I WRITE THIS, THERE IS LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO BEFORE Thanksgiving – and by the time you’re reading it, the festivities will have come and gone. I’m reminded that as we head deeper into the holiday season, there will be a plethora of things to do: from visiting light shows to shopping for gifts, and all the preparation that comes with the upcoming holiday gatherings. This can be a hectic time of year, and I’d like to take this space to encourage you to take a step back before making too many commitments this season, and proceed with intent. As the calendar fills up and you start to go about your shopping, planning and cleaning, think about what you’re doing to create joy and memories for yourself and your family – and which events might just be added noise. You can’t say yes to everything, and if you try, you’ll find yourself rushing from place to place without stopping to enjoy any of it. So this holiday season, let’s remember to be present. Or, to put it more eloquently, call to mind the advice of the Buddhist monk Thích Nhât Hanh: “When you hold a child in your arms, or hug your mother, or your husband, or your friend, if you breathe in and out three times, your happiness will be multiplied at least tenfold.”

onsidering the significant numbers surrounding mental health, it’s shocking to think a stigma still exists in today’s society. Yet it persists, and people living with mental illnesses are made to feel unwelcome in the functioning world. Enter Independence Center: a refuge for those who have somehow been defined as being just “outside of the norm.” “Due to the stigma attached around their illness, individuals tend to isolate themselves,” says Jamie Clark, director of development at Independence Center. “But when they come here, they know they are a part of something. Independence Center is unique in that it becomes a community of its own.” This extraordinary community operates at several different levels. Independence Center operates Midwest Psychiatry to provide psychiatric services, offers housing through four residential facilities, and runs a voluntary rehabilitation program that mirrors a work environment. Known as the Clubhouse, this work environment is based on an international rehabilitation model. “It’s focused around work, building skills and the confidence to become part of our community,” Clark explains. “Through the work opportunities at the Clubhouse, we’re able to build relationships to determine our members’ needs, and in return, provide services around housing, education, employment and wellness.” Independence Center is set to host its biggest annual fundraiser, Dancing with the St. Louis Stars, in January at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. LN gives you a sneak peek at this year’s local stars.
Thomas (Tom) O’Meara,
Principal, chairman of the board and managing partner at Moneta Group DANciNg with eMiLy Scherer Tom O’Meara has always placed importance on giving back to the community. He currently serves on the board for Mental Health America while also supporting Teach for America, and is proud to assist Independence Center in its goal to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health.

or Anne Tipton, owner of Expressions Furniture, this room was a project built from the ground up. The client has a large antique rug she bought with the house, so Tipton worked the room and its furniture around the flooring. Tipton says the client had some antique pieces, so they tried to harmonize them with newer pieces in an integrated mix of past and present. “It’s a true blending of old and new,” Tipton says. “We pulled the least predictable color (orange) from the rug and tried to do an eclectic look.” Working with the rug was Tipton’s biggest challenge, but the client was very helpful and knew what she was looking for, Tipton says. She remained open to integrating pieces from widely divergent eras for a multifaceted look. “(The client) also wanted to use pieces from her grandparents that were special to her, along with adding new pieces,” Tipton says. Expressions brought in the day bed, fabrics, ottoman, cocktail table and a pair of chests. “We’re able to take a room from scratch or work with what you already have,” Tipton says. “We love mixing the old and the new.”

Design Speak
More than three decades after Jim and Linda Shubert launched their furniture enterprise, Shubert Design Furniture has grown from a handmade mattress-and-boxsprings enterprise to a full-service interior design company with a showroom full of carefully curated fine furniture. Since its inception on Jan. 1, 1980, the Shuberts have truly taken hold of the American Dream for themselves and their employees, many of whom have been there from the company’s earliest days. Tell us a little about how Shubert Design Furniture came to be. I was going to graduate school in St. Louis, and Linda was working part time between Columbia and St. Louis. We had an idea about a need for mattresses and box springs for college students – good quality, yet low pricing. We got in the business of making the mattresses and box springs by hand. Before we knew it, we were selling around 75 sets per week in the St. Louis and mid-Missouri area. We then evolved into selling furniture – mainly bedrooms at that time. Do you consider yourself an interior design company or a furniture store? That is a complicated question! Shubert Design started out as a retail furniture store, but we soon discovered Linda’s intellectual knowledge and properties for interior design. Linda grew up with an education background, as both her parents were teachers. Her father was a professor at the University of Missouri School of Engineering in Rolla. Her mother was an elementary school teacher with an emphasis in math. Therefore, Linda had a very strong math and architectural background growing up. She is very creative – it must have been in her DNA. We evolved into doing interior design projects while being a retail-furniture store. Both our backgrounds

in merchandising and business became a major asset for our organization. All of our retail associates have a very strong background in interior design, and several are ASID-trained or certified. In the last 35 years, we have done thousands of residential interior design projects, nationally and internationally. Shubert Design also has done several commercial projects, mainly in the St. Louis area and throughout the Midwest. What is your design philosophy? Because of the variety of projects we have done, many times the interior design elements of our work evolve around who the client is and what their needs are for space and utility, along with their desired taste. We are there to guide and steward those projects to meet the demands of our clients. What types of furniture do you consider to be your specialty? Shubert Design’s size allows us to carry many designers, showing mainly in the areas of transitional, soft contemporary and traditional presentation. How do you select what designers to carry? (Being) a good interior designer does not make you a furniture designer. They are two distinctive types of backgrounds. Therefore, Shubert Design chooses its furniture based on quality and workmanship, value, scale and presentation. What makes your business unique? What services do you offer that set you apart from other design firms? Shubert Design is unique because of the people who work for us, their talent levels, their work ethic, and strong management and leadership. We have our own finishers and upholsterers that work for us. For the most part, we do our own deliveries, except during
Linda Shubert
peak seasons and out-of-state and international projects. We are a no-debt organization – we have no debt within Shubert Design or any other endeavors where the two of us are involved, privately and commercially. This gives us an edge over our competition to buy right. Because of the monetary investment that our clients are making, not only do they expect the great service we are able to provide because of our vertical integration, but for the most part, want the most competitive prices they can receive. We are always striving to do better.

or Emily Mitchell, blogger, designer and architect for design company The Place Home, work is more than just a profession or list of responsibilities – her company evolved from blog to business as a natural extension of herself. She sits in front of us, pen poised above a room layout sketched in a Moleskine notebook, her mind never far away from her craft. The Place Home blog launched in the spring of 2013 as a personal creative outlet for Mitchell, where she was able to hone in on residential design, sharing everything from home-style tips to furniture finds. “It’s sort of evolved from there,” she says. The blog became a valuable resource not only to provide design inspiration for readers, but also to use her expertise in residential interior design to turn those readers into clients. “Things have a
funny way of working out,” she says. Growing up in a suburb outside of Detroit, Mitchell had great focus in her early aspirations. “I used to tell my parents I wanted to be an architect when I was little,” she says. “Then I had this idea that it was really mathematical and was scared away from it.” She ended up at Washington University in St. Louis to pursue her undergraduate degree in European studies and marketing. After a couple of internships in communications, she experienced a renaissance of her childhood aspirations during a semester abroad in Italy, where she gained exposure to a vastly different world of architecture and urban design. From there, it was full speed ahead. Mitchell quickly gained admission to the Career Discovery program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, an intensive six-week program that immerses participants fully

in the design and planning professions. The program allowed Mitchell a realistic glimpse into the world of architecture as a career, leading her to Wash U’s master’s program in architecture, the completion of her degree in 2012 and launch of The Place Home blog the next spring. As The Place Home has expanded into a business, Mitchell has been able to design residential interiors in the St. Louis area, as well as advising clients remotely and helping families make their living spaces flow and function best for their day-to-day lives. No detail goes unnoticed in Mitchell’s work – she will reinvent the purpose of a room on a macro scale, like flipping a dining room into a den, based on the client’s needs, and then fine-tune the small-but-mighty micro details, like light-switch placement, to suit how the client will walk through the space. In Mitchell’s aesthetic and work, architecture and interior design go hand in hand. “I always begin a project thinking about the space itself before thinking about any of the finishes,” she says. “If it’s an existing space – what are its attributes or drawbacks? What is there to emphasize or minimize? I’d say that’s a very architectural approach.” Starting with the floor plan and spatial arrangements, interior-design elements round out the vision. “It’s an added layer of functionality of how people will
occupy their space,” Mitchell says. “Residential design is intimate – that’s the part I really enjoy, that direct influence on how people can really live in their space.” This simple, edited approach to usability has guided Mitchell to design gorgeous spaces and homes, working with homeowners and industry professionals alike. Mitchell has been able to put her architecture-anddesign hybrid philosophy to work in a very personal way: The crown jewel of her portfolio is the gradual remodel of the 150-year-old home she shares with her husband and Booker, their dog. Built in 1869, the home had mercifully undergone fairly recent updates, including central air. “It wasn’t a full fixer-upper, but it needed fixing,” she says. “Old homes have a lot of maintenance and a lot of surprises.” Since moving into the home in August of 2014, the couple has tackled its second floor, which has included projects such as changing the former master bedroom into a guest room and replacing the drywall, ceilings, flooring and lighting throughout. The downstairs has undergone a similar revamp. “Our downstairs space is made up of multiple rooms that didn’t have a clearly defined use (besides the kitchen and bathroom),” Mitchell says. By switching the previous owner’s dining-room space with the family-room area, Mitchell and her husband have been able to make the first floor better reflect their lifestyle.
“Our family room is much more comfortable, and our dining room becomes much more usable and less formal,” she says. The process of making the historic St. Louis-area house into a home for Mitchell’s family is chronicled on The Place Home blog, which includes everything from Mitchell’s process of repurposing rooms to optimize the spaces’ functionality, to her design inspiration for color and texture in various areas of the home. Undertaking such a large spatial redesign of her own home proved a huge learning experience for Mitchell, who found herself following the advice that she commonly shares with clients. From this positive experience, she hopes to launch the home-restoration component of her business soon, but there are still some details to be worked out. “(This piece of the business) is pending the right opportunity, whether that be in a property for investment or a partnership with a contractor or client,” Mitchell says. Mitchell’s ultimate goal, with all the services offered through The Place Home, is to give clients a greater appreciation for their home. “I want to create spaces that feel good to be in and bring meaning, quality and personal reflection,” she says. “I like to think I’ve made the space in some way better for them.”

Q&A with
SARA TRAN
By Julia Christensen From chic geometric felt coasters to crocheted children’s dinosaur scarves, online boutique Keep Design + Lifestyle was created to compile all the little things one shops for into a convenient location. Interior designer Sara Tran is the woman behind Keep Design + Lifestyle. As it is a young company, the brand may be new to many St. Louisans, but her name likely is not – she is the daughter of Lee Tran, owner of the popular Mai Lee restaurant in Brentwood. LN recently spoke to Tran to find more about her online shopping destination. Tell us about Keep Design + Lifestyle as if we had never heard of it. Keep Design + Lifestyle is a collection of handmade and/or designed items that I have selected for my boutique. What you’ll see are items that you can use for your own personal use, as well as great gift ideas. It includes kids’ items, art, stationery and home accessories. I’m always researching, so there will always be new items. How did you get into design? Design was always something I loved to do. I remember at a young age rearranging my bedroom – that I shared with my younger sister – every week. I’m sure she was very annoyed, but I thought it was so cool

to see how everything can still function and work in the space if the bed was against this wall instead of the other. I had no idea there was interior design until I got to college. I thought, “That is exactly what I want to do.” I’ve been pursuing interior design ever since. During that time, I did work at a local home-accessory and furnishing store, and fell in love with the retail side of things. Every time I would shop, I would go store-tostore and always thought, “If only there was one place with all of the items that I would love and keep!” So in 2014, I decided to start my own online boutique and
offer items that I would personally have and share my personal style with everyone else. So Keep + Lifestyle is a reflection of your personal taste? Keep definitely reflects my personal taste. I’m pretty simple and laid-back. I like clean lines. I tend to wear a lot of black and white. I’ll throw in a color here and there, but that’s just me. Where do you find your inspiration? I am surrounded by inspiration. I am an interior designer, and with new products developing all the time – textiles, wall coverings, architectural material, graphics – I can get inspired very easily. I follow a lot of different fashion designers and artists through social media as well. Where can clients find your work and products? You can find my products on my online boutique at keepboutique.com. Ninety percent of the items I offer are handmade or are designed by artists from all over the world. I’d like to keep everything under $100. I think about myself and how I like to shop for nice and unique items that are reasonably priced, and I want to offer the same. What do you see happening next? I’m hoping to develop enough to participate in a pop-up art show. In the future, I’d love to open a physical boutique. How fun would it be to design that?

Diane Katzman Design’s high-profile jewelry and accessories have both international acclaim and hometown history By Brittany Nay | Photos by Sarah Conard
D
uring the past 16 years, Diane Katzman Design’s custom jewelry and accessories have appeared on the runways of Kenneth Cole and Calvin Klein, graced the pages of Elle and InStyle, and shined on the shelves of Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. In recent years, the internationally high-profile, locally owned and operated company has been somewhat of a well-kept secret to St. Louisans. Now, a recently redesigned studio in University City near the northeastern edge of Ladue is helping to spread the word about more opportunities for local customers to buy products directly from the designer – just in time for the holidays. Diane Katzman Design launched in the late ’90s, when Katzman, who was teaching public relations and marketing at Washington University, began making jewelry with her daughters – then aged 5, 7 and 8 – as a way to work on their math skills. “We took apart my grandmother’s old necklaces, and we worked on sorting, counting and multiplication – all as we strung beads,” Katzman says. “Then, people started asking us where we
were getting our jewelry.” Amid growing interest from family and friends, Katzman and her daughters made a hand-strung eclectic jewelry line – featuring sterling silver, pearls and semiprecious stones – and began selling wholesale to large retailers in 1999. “My ‘workers’ were off to kindergarten, second and third grades,” Katzman says. “So (to continue the jewelry line), I hired the Brownie (Girl Scouts) leader, the local religious school teacher and the kindergarten aid – and one of the three is still with me today.” The jewelry’s eclectic designs and unusual details soon attracted the attention of highend department stores. “It was the beginning of the bead craze,” Katzman says. “We prided ourselves in making truly beautiful designs that were modern-day heirlooms.” The unique pieces went on to be sold in about 1,000 stores and museum shops worldwide, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Anthropologie and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, as well as Nordstrom. But in 2001, 9/11 changed the jewelry market,
Katzman says. Large retailers began offering designer jewelry only on consignment, and there was an influx of costume jewelry from China, forcing Katzman’s business to change directions. The company evolved into offering promotional products, reward items for credit-card holders and nonprofit fundraising incentives, including jewelry, scarves, ties and other accessories. Today, the company’s custom jewelry line includes sterling silver and gold-plated necklaces, as well as earrings and bracelets featuring pearls, crystals, turquoise and more. All pieces are designed locally at the company’s Delmar Boulevard studio, which features a showroom, a design room, a small warehouse, a shipping room and offices. About 60 percent is hand-crafted by Katzman’s three full-time staff members, and 40 percent is made in Thailand and China. “We make the sample, then send it to our factory in Asia to be made in large quantities,” Katzman says, adding that orders can range in the thousands. More than 100,000 pieces have been sold this year, and a total of more than 200,000 pieces is expected to be made by year’s end.
Diane Katzman Design
Holiday Sale Beginning Dec. 3 through Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Diane Katzman Design’s studio will host its annual public sale, with the majority of pieces available for $5 to $10. Sale items include silver and gold-plated “hugs and kisses” (Xs and Os) bangles ($12) and crystal infinity-link bracelets ($25), top-selling crystal solitaire necklace and earring sets ($10) and silver necklaces with a large heart pendant and small charms ($7). As always, a portion of Wednesday’s proceeds benefit a local charity (this year, Women of Achievement). For more information, call 314-997-3553 or visit dianekatzman.com.
Her custom jewelry pieces and accessories are available online through her Etsy page, as rewards for credit-card holders and charitable donors, and at the studio’s annual public sale, which takes place from Dec. 3 through 5. To obtain Katzman’s jewelry and accessories through credit card-rewards programs, consumers can use Visa, Citibank, Hilton HHonors and Southwest Airlines rewards cards to accumulate redeemable points. “We ship orders all over the country, taking care of a large portion of costume jewelry fulfillment in this industry,” Katzman says. In fact, Diane Katzman Design recently was named by Reward HQ as No. 1 for brand loyalty among companies in the credit card-rewards industry. The company also offers a promotional product line for large corporations, including Sephora (bangles), Coca-Cola (keychains and beaded bracelets), Nickelodeon (charm bracelets), Wells Fargo Advisors (watches), Clinique (bangles) and Edward Jones (cufflinks and pearl bracelets). The company also made commemorative bracelets for NBCUniversal and the U.S.
Olympic Committee foor the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which were feeatured on the “Today” show. The business’ promotional ti al products p du ts for f national ti al and local nonprofits include United Way (charm bracelets), American Heart Association (cufflinks), St. Louis Public Radio (scarves and ties), St. Louis Children’s Hospital (charm bracelets) and Susan G. Komen (ties with pink ribbons). The products have generated big dollars for charity, including raising more than $1 million for Susan G. Komen through tie sales. Katzman’s generous charitable component stems from her deep desire to help others. “I want to leave the world a better place,” she says. “If I can use my art as a vehicle to generate revenue for charities and multiply other people’s involvement, I think that’s my responsibility.”

KIDS MD
Isn’t It Grand?
By Dr. Joseph Kahn
MY WIFE, KAREN, AND I ARE GRANDPARENTS TO FIVE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE, CHARMING, VIVACIOUS, INTELLIGENT AND EXCEPTIONAL GRANDCHILDREN ON EARTH. THIS IS OUR REWARD FOR 36 YEARS OF PARENTING. I KNOW THE TIME SPENT WITH THEM MAKES ME A HAPPIER AND BETTER PERSON, BUT THERE ARE SOME WAYS IN WHICH GRANDCHILDREN MAKE GRANDPARENTS HEALTHIER AS WELL. Spending the right amount of time with grandkids enhances our cognitive skills. Too much time can cause some stress (we are older and they are active!), but the right amount of interaction stimulates valuable nerve pathways and keeps us feeling physically young and mentally sharp. Chasing grandkids keeps us active. Take two 3-year-olds to the park and see who gets the most exercise! Grandparents who have a strong emotional tie to their grandchildren are less likely to be depressed and more likely to have a positive sense of emotional well-being.
Your immune system may be stronger.
belonging and purpose.
Increased touch and human contact are known to decrease inflammatory cells and increase infection-fighting white blood cells.
Grandparents take care of themselves for the sake of their grandchildren. They eat better, exercise more and look forward to the future milestones of their grandchildren.
Increased contact elevates levels of stressfighting hormones. Increased life stress speeds the aging process, while decreasing stress slows it. Grandchildren can counter the social isolation that comes from the loss of family members and friends who have moved or passed away. The relationship to grandchildren gives us a sense of
What if you are not blessed with grandchildren? Consider volunteering at a children’s hospital or another venue close to kids. Some suggest getting a pet, but for all their messes, my grandkids don’t shed on the sofa. Communication CONJUGATION
Late High School, Early Decision
By Janis Murray
I
went to Seaholm High School (the equivalent of Ladue High School) in Birmingham, Michigan, outside Detroit. In the mid-1970s, a University of Michigan representative visited and offered admission to the 15 students with the best grade point/SAT score combinations in our Baby Boomer class of 800. I was in! College search done. Fast-forward to 2000 at MICDS. We moms of juniors learned the strategy of “the stretch, the right-on and the safety,” applying to two schools in each category, for a total of six. (New York City private schools today recommend 12!) Then they introduced what I call “Acronym Math” . . . ED, EA, ACT, SAT, GPA, AP coupled with numbers like 26, 33, 1650, 2250, 2.7, 3.8, 4 and 5. Here’s how this works: One college counselor says to another: “He’s a 3.9, 35 and wants to go to Stanford.” “How many AP’s?” “Five, with 4’s and 5’s but one 3.”
Huh? Jargon. Every profession has it: shorthand that saves time, but in general communication, leaves people confused and aggravated. Veteran college parents get it. Newbies? There’s time. For high school seniors, the one acronym that looms large this month is ED – Early Decision. ED is a binding contract where students agree that if their one favorite school accepts them, they will go there and immediately withdraw applications to other schools. With most deadlines hitting on Nov. 1, the waiting is tough. Decisions are rendered around Dec. 15, when my phone will ring a lot with shrieks of joy – or tears – on the other end. All will be precious. But those rejected will have to start over. More essays to write just as winter break is coming. For those students, the next deadline is Jan. 1. After 15 years working with high school students, I ask parents of ED kids: Please go softly the next couple of weeks. Young hearts are fragile. Remember yours,

parents? Rejection is real and awful, a feeling that can only be relieved by you, the most important people in their lives. I know. They tell me, as the safe third party. Each will need love, encouragement and facts. The fact is, we never really know why some don’t get in. The fact is, there is a perfect-match college for each student where happiness and success will grow. We all just keep trying. That’s what life’s about. READY IN 5 T
By Chef John Johnson
he holiday season is just around the corner, and this is the time of year there are always leftovers – not to mention the little voice in my head telling me that I ate too much. Here is one way to eat a little healthier between those holiday parties and family get-togethers, and use up some leftover burnt ends from your favorite roast.
WINTER WEDGE SALAD Serves four
Ingredients: 1 small head iceberg lettuce 2 Roma tomatoes 1 thin-sliced garlic clove ½ medium red onion, julienned 1 c. lime juice ½ c. bleu cheese 4 strips bacon, cooked and diced 2 c. burnt ends, shredded 1 c. vegetable stock 2 tbsp. canola oil 2 to 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce Salt & black pepper, as needed
Directions: 1. Begin by coring the core and cutting Roma tomatoes in half. Add to bowl with sliced garlic, tablespoon of oil, salt and pepper. Toss well to coat tomatoes and then place tomatoes on pan, cut side up, and cook in 300-degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove and let rest at room temperature. 2. Heat lime juice until it just begins to boil. Add two pinches of salt and pour over julienned red onions in bowl. Mix thoroughly and let rest until they cool. This makes a quick pickled onion. 3. Heat sauté pan with tablespoon of oil. Add shredded burnt ends and quickly sauté until meat begins to crisp. Add Worcestershire sauce and vegetable stock, then reduce heat and let simmer until stock is reduced by half. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. 4. Wash and cut lettuce into four wedges and plate with tomato, pickled red onions, crumbled bleu cheese and diced bacon, then add warm beef.

Well-Heeled Design Caleres shoe designer Angelique Joseph shares what it feels like to walk a day in her shoes.

I
t all starts with a vision of the perfect shoe. For shoe designers like Angelique Joseph, seeing footwear move from sketch to shelf is a constant process. Joseph is the lead designer for Naturalizer, a top brand for St. Louis-based international shoe company Caleres. Many will know Caleres by its former name: Brown Shoe Co. The 137-year-old business went through a rebranding process in May and opened its new-look headquarters in Clayton just a few weeks ago. From the rebrand to the HQ alterations to Saint Louis Fashion Week, it’s been a busy year for Caleres and its employees. But the design process never stops. Joseph says designers like her are constantly traveling both domestically and internationally, seeking out the latest trends. “When we’re shopping, we look at all stores in the city: high end to mainstream,” Joseph says. “We look at apparel, jewelry, accessories…it all affects shoe design.” Going to parts of the world that are currently in the season you’re designing for is key. Joseph often travels to fashion capitals such as Paris, Milan and London, along with up-and-coming places like Stockholm and Amsterdam. She also visits domestic hot spots including New York City and Los Angeles. “We look all over to get inspired and bring our ideas back,” Joseph says. “Then we have a huge kickoff meeting where we talk about what we saw in terms of trends.” Right now, she says, shoes with heavier soles and platforms are back in style, a style that won’t get lost in the corresponding resurgence of wide-leg pants. This is why it’s important for designers to keep an eye on apparel, accessories and jewelry in addition to footwear trends. Joseph and her team decide what vision and look the shoes are going for, whether it’s rocker-chic, quiet attitude or something entirely different, which the company refers to as the shoe’s “story.” “Depending on what our stories are, we start researching what’s selling and what’s working,” she says. “We see what our competitors are doing. Then, we start putting preliminary ideas down on paper.” For Naturalizer, a brand that delivers feminine, stylish and comfortable shoes in a way that’s relevant to the busy lifestyle of today’s woman, starting from the ground up is important. Joseph says her design team starts with the bottom of the shoe and progresses up from there. “We don’t even think about the top part of the shoe at first,” she says. “We have to figure out the overall shape of the shoe first. Does it have a blocky heel? Is it pointed? Is it square?” Once the initial bottom shape is down, the designers can begin working on the top of the shoe, which they put together based on the stories they’ve decided on. After getting the designs down, the designers have a series of critiques with the sales and marketing teams.
They have two or three meetings before the shoe is made as a sales sample. “In the design review, they’re just seeing sketches; it’s just basic black and white on paper,” Joseph says. The process then moves to a prototype review. The prototype is usually just one shoe in one material, just to give the teams an idea of the vision for the final product. Joseph lists all the teams involved – and there are many – including the sales team, the sample team overseas, the fit team, the material team, the developing team, the pricing team and the production team. Although she doesn’t know exactly the number of people involved in the timeline of a Caleres shoe, she estimates it in the hundreds. “The hardest part of the design process is selling your vision,” she says. “You have the vision and image in your head, and you can picture it. But you have to get everyone else to grasp the concept. You have to make sure you’re not too far [ahead of trends] but not too far behind, either. You don’t want to be stale.” Joseph’s favorite parts of the job are the opportunities to travel – and, she says with a laugh, the discounted shoes. As a designer, she loves seeing people literally walking in her shoes. She recalls being in New Orleans for her birthday and seeing a young woman on Bourbon Street wearing a pair of Naturalizer shoes that she helped design. She also saw three different pairs of shoes on three different age ranges of women, and since Naturalizer is trying to broaden its age range and diversity of products, she says that was “pretty cool.” “It makes you feel like what you’re doing is working,” she says. “I always love going up to people and asking them why they bought the shoe. It’s so personal why you like a certain shoe and why you bought it in the first place.” Caleres, 8300 Maryland Ave., Clayton, 314-854-4000, caleres.com

THE DAILY: Feature Story
UMB PRIVATE WEALTH MANAGEMENT
A
s the sun sets on 2015 and another year is upon us, UMB Private Wealth Management advisors are ready to help clients evaluate their financial lives and plan for the future. Phillip Klevorn, senior VP and regional manager of UMB Private Wealth Management – St. Louis, says this is an opportune time to ask your wealth advisors important financial questions, including: “Were my priorities met in 2015?” and “As I look forward to 2016, what do I want to accomplish, and are there changes in my priorities?” UMB wealth advisors can help answer these questions by first determining the client’s priorities. “We really believe this should be done by incorporating the decisions of the whole family and establishing a mission statement around the client’s finances,” Klevorn says. “Use this time during the end of year to find your mission and core beliefs about how your family views its money and what its priorities are.”

Major life events will drive or change priorities that will affect the family’s financial plan. UMB recommends clients complete a checklist to determine what’s different about their priorities: • Have I changed jobs or retired? • Have I gotten married? • Have I had children? • Have my children started college? • Have I purchased a house, or am I planning to move soon? Based on those priorities, UMB wealth advisors help families establish an investment plan, Klevorn says. “There are three key factors in this plan: retirement saving, education spending and health care spending.” Clients should ask themselves what 2015 was like in terms of these factors and how they can plan for them in the new year, he adds. “It’s about figuring out where the client wants to be, and pooling resources and making sure they are deployed in the right manner to reach the goals of their plan.” Clients also should consider charitable

contributions. “Discuss how your family wants to allocate its charitable inclinations – money, time and focus,” Klevorn says. “This meshes in with the family mission statement.” While it’s important to have a financial plan, Klevorn says it’s also crucial for clients to periodically sit down with their families and wealth advisors to tweak or overhaul that plan based on changes in their lives. “Clients who engage with their wealth advisors during this end-of-the-year period are going to be more successful in reaching their future goals.” 314-612-8048, umb.com/privatewealth

Sasha’s on Shaw
T
he holiday season boasts a wide variety of theater productions to choose from, and with such a bounty, you’ll need to take some time to decide which shows you’ll be enjoying. Why not make an evening of it? Settle in around the hearth and soak up the warmth from the crackling fireplace at Sasha’s on Shaw, indulge in some fine food and wine, and peruse our holiday theater guide. Here are some tips on what to enjoy while you’re making those tough decisions. The Sasha’s menu is now on tablets, making it easy to navigate all of the selections, including the large wine list. Individual items can be opened for more lengthy descriptions as well as pictures. It’s a nice touch and much more convenient than having to juggle multiple menus.

The charcuterie plate ($13.50) is a good way to start things. This platter contains a variety of tasty smoked meats, including a pepper-encrusted salami that has a particularly nice bite to it. It also includes some mustard and gherkins as well as the requisite crostini. There are several items on the menu that allow guests to mix and match compatible flavors. A good pairing from the cold plate and salad offerings is the hummus and pita ($9) partnered with the Greek salad (small $8.50; large available for $13.50). The hummus is very simple and straightforward: just a little bit of extra virgin olive oil, some tangy feta and Kalamata olives, with lightly toasted triangles of pita. The small salad is an extremely generous portion, more than enough for one. It comprises diced cucumber,
By Matt Sorrell tomato and red onion, and copious amounts of feta mixed together with lemon and olive oil, served with Kalamata olives and a couple of dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) perched on top. In addition to complementing each other, these dishes pair nicely with a glass of Château Soucherie Anjou Rouge ($14.50), a smooth, fruit-forward cab franc from France’s Loire Valley. Sasha’s is particularly known for its crêpes, and according to the menu, the prosciutto and Italian fontina crêpe ($14.50) is the best-selling variety. It’s easy to see why. The crêpe itself is soft and light with just a hint of sweetness, and this little bit of sweet is tastefully contrasted with the salty prosciutto and the creamy, smooth fontina cheese. The menu says these crêpes are meal-sized portions – and it’s not wrong. They’re more than enough for one, and

sharing is a definite possibility. There are also a few pizza selections, including a build-your-own option, and all the pies are based on Companion crusts. For those with a hearty appetite, there’s a small selection of hot plates, larger entrée-sized dishes like New Zealand lamb chops and grilled tenderloin. In addition, there are plenty of sweet crêpes and cheese plates available. With its central location, Sasha’s is also just minutes from some of the city’s best performance spaces, in case you end up making up your mind about that next show.

No sooner have you wolfed down the last slice of turkey and inhaled that remaining piece of pumpkin pie than it’s Black Friday, and the bargain hunters are converging on malls everywhere to begin the holiday shopping frenzy. To keep you sane in the midst of that maelstrom of manic activity, here’s a list of goodies that theater companies and venues around town are offering during December. There’s plenty of merriment ahead: “All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914” will be the holiday offering at Mustard Seed Theatre for the third consecutive season when it opens Nov. 27 at the Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of Fontbonne University. It’s based on the true story of a Christmas Eve in World War I when Allied and German troops called their own cease-fire in a battle zone and exchanged holiday greetings. The show runs through Dec. 20. For tickets, call 314-719-8060 or go to mustardseedtheatre.com. The Rep’s holiday offering is the Tony Award-winning musical “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which will be presented on the Mainstage Dec. 2 through 27. Based on a book by Dave Barry and St. Louisan Ridley Pearson, the story is a prequel to “Peter Pan” and focuses on an apprentice starcatcher and an orphan boy who are assigned to protect magical “star stuff” from a fearsome pirate and his crew. Call The Rep box office at 314-9684925 or visit repstl.org. And now for something completely different. Stray Dog Theatre has served up stylish silliness the past few holiday seasons and ratchets up its effort with “Devil Boys From Beyond” Dec. 3 through 19 at the Tower Grove Abbey. Carrying a “Mature Audiences Only” label, “Devil Boys From Beyond” is described as “His Girl Friday” meets “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” For ticket information, call 314-865-1995 or visit StrayDogTheatre.org. Two lonely residents of a seedy nursing home find that solitaire passes the time but gin rummy forges a relationship in the play “Gin Game,” which runs Dec. 4 through 20 at the Gaslight Theater, 358 N. Boyle, as part of St. Louis Actors’ Studio’s season of “mind games.” For tickets, call 1-800-982-2787 or visit ticketmaster.com. A circus, a Broadway musical, a holiday spectacular and a family show all visit The Fox Theatre at the same time when “Cirque Dreams Holidaze” brings its big-top magic to the spacious Fox stage Dec. 4 through 6. Director Neil Goldberg re-imagines the holidays with more than 300 costumes, 20 acts and 30 performers from 12 countries showcasing imaginative feats. Tickets start at $25 and are available by calling 314-534-1111 or visiting MetroTix.com. A few years ago, acclaimed actor Ken Page wrote a charming musical titled “Café Chanson” that played to receptive audiences in an Upstream Theater presentation. Page’s latest effort, “Sublime Intimacy,”
“Cirque Dreams Holidaze”
is a remembered tale of five friends whose lives were changed forever by their love of the dancer and the dance, with original music by Henry Palkes. Max & Louie Productions’ world premiere performance runs Dec. 4 through 20 at the Kranzberg Arts Center, with Alfredo Sullivan as The Dancer. For information, call 1-800-838-3006 or visit maxandlouie.com. In “Bad Jews,” when three cousins come together for Shiva following their grandfather’s funeral, the shiksa hits the fan, so to speak, when self-described “bad Jew” Liam arrives with his Gentile girlfriend. This sets off a verbal war with his cousin, Daphna, who considers herself to be a “real Jew” with an Israeli boyfriend and therefore has a proper claim to their grandfather’s chai necklace. It runs Dec. 3 through 20 at New Jewish Theatre. Call 314-442-3283 or visit newjewishtheatre.org. Peabody Opera House boards the holiday entertainment train with a touring production of “Elf,” the comic story of an orphaned boy living at the North Pole who learns that he is not a real elf and then journeys to New York City in search of his biological father. Ticket information is available at 314-499-7676 or peabodyoperahouse.com. Winter Opera once again will present Holidays on the Hill, a holiday dinner and concert at Dominic’s Restaurant, 5101 Wilson Ave., on Dec. 8 and 9. Included with the four-course wine dinner are performances by Gina Galati and other opera singers. Call 314-865-0038 for reservations. The Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company offers its holiday show, “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” from Dec. 19 through 23 at the Heagney Theatre on the campus of Nerinx Hall High School in Webster Groves. See what magic happens when a poor but kindly shoemaker gives his last pair of shoes to a cold and hungry beggar in this tale by the Brothers Grimm. Contact The Rep at 314-968-4925 or repstl.org for more details. For a full list of area holiday performances, visit laduenews.com. Happy holidays to one and all!

The Wine Life What I am drinking now… By Stanley Browne
2010 La Spinetta, “Cà di Pian” Barbera d’Asti, Piedmont, Italy 100 percent Barbera Winemaker/Owner: Giorgio Rivetti Production: 80,000 bottles Aged: 12 months in new and used French Oak Approximate Retail Price: $28 TASTING NOTES: Color: Red ruby with some underlying purple tones Aroma: Blueberries, dried plums and sandalwood notes Taste: Bright red and dark fruits, wild berries, seamless mouth feel, spice, balanced with good acidity and mellow tannins
L
a Spinetta is a family-owned and -operated winery that has garnered international press for its wines. Founded in 1977, La Spinetta, which means “top of the hill,” is housed in Piedmont in northwest Italy, richly noted
for its fine wines and good food. La Spinetta began its vineyards with moscato and other whites, but made a speedy ascent to the venerated Barbaresco and Barolo with remarkable success. Barbera was the first red to emerge from the much-celebrated La Spinetta line of red wines and is considered to be the best of its style in the Langhe appellation of Piedmont. All the La Spinetta wines have an approachable and voluptuous style. They can be easily spotted by the distinctive label, which features a rhinoceros. The rhinoceros has no real connection to the wines, except that the owner loved the drawing and woodcut by artist Albrecht Dürer. Barbera is a high-yielding grape. La Spinetta practices “green harvest,” or cutting off grapes during the growing season, which allows the rest of the fruit to utilize all the resources of the earth and ensure higher quality. Barbera likes lessfertile soil, and the calcareous soil (lime/ chalk) at La Spinetta is ideal. Barbera is
usually picked late in the season – between late September and early October. The other main red grapes besides Nebbiolo to make Barolo and Barbaresco are Dolcetto and Barbera, which have minimal oak aging and are sold to market quicker to generate cash flow. Piedmont is home to Barbera, but other parts of the world make some, including Australia, the United States, Argentina and Uruguay. However, most lack the Italian acidity. Food Pairings: Barbera is known as a pizza wine because it pairs so well with tomatoes, but truly it pairs well with many foods, including grilled or roasted red meats, mushrooms, barbecue (especially ribs), lamb, full-flavored cheeses (especially pecorino) and pastas with tomatoes, meat or pesto sauce. la-spinetta.com Certified Sommelier Stanley Browne is the owner of Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves and Downtown at the MX.

Arts Speak
Q&A
with NoÉmi Neidorff By Alice Handelman Disguised as a peasant, Noémi Karpati Neidorff left behind her friends, home and cherished piano to escape the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The 8-year-old walked across the Austrian border with her parents, who bore the false identification of peasant farmers. They carried only two cloth knapsacks, ones the family would bring with them when they eventually immigrated to the United States. They brought nothing of intrinsic value, only a couple of layers of clothing to keep them warm from the bitter December cold, black-and-white photographs and a tiny silver box that still holds the keys to the home left behind. “I have never washed the knapsacks. They are here in our Clayton home with their original dust…They are symbolic of who I am and how my parents and I began with nothing. I never take anything for granted and want to give back,” she says. Neidorff was recently elected the eighth chair of the board of Opera Theatre of St. Louis. She and her husband Michael (chairman, president and CEO of Centene Corp.) have a three-decade history of support for Opera Theatre, as well as other arts and educational institutions both locally and outside St. Louis. Michael was involved in Opera Theatre’s $11 million “Building for Opera” Campaign, and now, many years later, Noémi is co-chairing Opera Theatre’s “Building on Excellence” campaign. Locally, in addition to Opera Theatre, the couple supports the St. Louis Symphony, Artist Presentation Society, Missouri History Museum, Washington University Department of Music, Saint Louis Art Museum, Sing for Siteman, Miriam School and “other causes that touch our hearts.” Neidorff says that besides Opera Theatre, her other “passion,” the Radio Arts Foundation-Saint Louis, has created a community-owned and -operated classical radio station that she says is “now a true voice for all of the arts and artists, including opera, in our region.”
Neidorff serves on the executive committee of the Manhattan School of Music and is past president and a member of the executive committee of the National Trustees of the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. She was honored in 2009 as a Woman of Achievement for nurturing young artists, was awarded the 2009 Visionary Award by Grand Center Inc. and was named Variety Woman of the Year in 2013. In 2014, the Neidorffs were honored by OPERA America in New York with the National Trustee Recognition Award. When did your interest in music blossom? I was fortunate to have a musical background and began playing piano by ear at age 4. I appeared on a Budapest radio children’s-hour program and, at age 6, began studying with a teacher at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Opera and music was a way of life
for our family. Upon arrival in the U.S., we moved to New Jersey. I attended the Manhattan School of Music in New York. (A classically trained pianist, she holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the school.) While there, I accompanied some fabulous singers and gained an even deeper appreciation, understanding and love for opera. When did you begin your love affair with Opera Theatre? When we moved to St. Louis 30 years ago, I was immediately attracted to Opera Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony. I began my involvement serving as a member of the Opera Theatre’s Guild Board. But it wasn’t until 2012, when I chaired a successful fundraising gala for Opera Theatre, that I was invited to join their board. I am both supportive and passionate about Opera Theatre. A beautiful and exceptional human voice will move me to tears, and I am humbled that some of the giants in the opera world got their start in St. Louis at Opera Theatre. What comes to mind when you hear the words “Opera Theatre”? I think of discovering, promoting and nurturing young artists; the intimacy of the theater-in-theround, picnics on the lawn, operas sung in English, groundbreaking productions, world premieres, a real happening. Our goal at Opera Theatre is to build and attract new audiences. Our general director, Tim O’Leary, along with his outstanding team, continue to initiate and promote community engagement. They inspire us all to continue discussions and dialogue about operas that may be new, sensitive or controversial in nature. We truly share the passion. All of us associated with this great company are so proud of its solid, highly respected reputation in the opera world. I am an extremely fortunate person. I feel I have been handed a silver spoon.

Gen Horiuchi stays “on point” about his 15th year as director of Saint Louis Ballet.
B
allet transforms the pratfalls of quotidian existence into the pirouettes of eternity, and Gen Horiuchi, executive and artistic director of Saint Louis Ballet, recently paused in his frenetic schedule to reflect on the transformations made to that local institution during his 15 years of leading it. Horiuchi – a compact, thoughtful man with an almost boyishly bashful smile, looking stylishly, if simply, elegant in all-black apparel – had just jetted to and from his native Japan on a mix of business and pleasure. He opened his reflections by sketching his terpsichorean beginnings: hailing from a family wherein both of his parents danced ballet in Tokyo; moving to New York at 15 to study at the Big Apple’s storied School of American Ballet; joining, two years later, the esteemed New York City Ballet; dancing on Broadway and elsewhere; and a year after visiting St. Louis for two weeks as a guest performer, choreographing the opening ceremony to the XVIII Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. Impressive résumé notwithstanding, Horiuchi is still quite prideful about his tenure here. “I think this year is really a high point so far, celebrating my 15th anniversary,” he says. “Certainly

it’s been an adventure because literally, there was no space with Saint Louis Ballet or, with this community, a ballet company. So I almost started on ground zero.” Following his guest performance two years prior, Horiuchi assumed leadership of Saint Louis Ballet in 1999 after then-director Ludmila Dokoudovsky died and the board recruited him for the position. At that time, Horiuchi recalls, the professional ballet company – which now comprises 22 dancers, five apprentices and five character artists – “had seven dancers and literally just one season performance, ‘The Nutcracker,’ and hardly any audiences or funding.” Fast-forwarding 15 years to this past October, the now much more robust company staged a twopart performance – comprising 1934’s “Serenade” and 1954’s “Western Symphony” – as a tribute to Horiuchi’s former New York City Ballet mentor George Balanchine, widely regarded as the father of American ballet, who died in 1983, just a year after Horiuchi joined his company. “It was exciting to revisit my past with this review and just to kind of revisit Balanchine’s choreography,” he says. “That was absolutely a joy to work with.”
The local response to the Oct. 10 to 11 “Best of Balanchine,” happily enough, all but floored Horiuchi. “I’ve never heard such enthusiastic audiences in St. Louis,” he says. “In every single move, they applauded, every single movement.” That tribute to Balanchine movingly merged yesterday with today for Horiuchi. “I’m so proud that I was part of his company and I actually did work with him,” he says. “So I’m absolutely grateful and then thankful to this community that they appreciate those classics.” Looming large on the horizon for Saint Louis Ballet: 10 stagings of “The Nutcracker” from Dec. 17 to 23 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Touhill Performing Arts Center.

Horiuchi’s previous experience in what he estimates to be more than 2,000 performances dancing in “Cats” – the Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster musical based on the light verse of hometown poetic heavyweight T.S. Eliot – has colored his approach during the past decade and a half to constantly keeping the holiday chestnut from going stale. “I say, ‘OK, what do I want to do this year to get new audiences coming to see the performance?’” Horiuchi explains. “I always try to see the production with perspective – this worked last year; this didn’t work a year before.’ So I’m always making changes or keeping the things that worked well.” In 2014, for instance, Horiuchi altered several
sequences to enhance the excitement of the show overall. “I’m always trying to make the show more enjoyable and also accessible to all ages,” he says. Beyond “The Nutcracker” lies the Valentine’s Day-weekend romantic debut of “In It for Love,” for which Horiuchi’s crafting new work but unsure of specifics. “I have a couple of ideas,” he teases, “but I really haven’t chosen which music or how many dancers I’ll be using.” Then, closing Saint Louis Ballet’s 2015-16 season and Horiuchi’s crystal anniversary with the company will come four early-April stagings – two evening productions and two matinees – of “Swan Lake.” Despite the 15th-anniversary spotlight now shining on him personally, Horiuchi sounds almost
fiercely proud of his company, which comprises professionals from 12 states besides Missouri, as well as Japan and Slovakia. “We are just as good, or even better, than any other community’s ballet company, like, say, Kansas City Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Louisville Ballet,” he says. “Just the same. We’re the St. Louis home ballet company. “That’s why I want everyone’s support. It’s not like we’re performing for parents and brothers and sisters of the dancers. They’re not here. We’re here for the development of the art.”

rom the chill of fall to the frigid holiday season, it’s the perfect time of year to settle into Bishop’s Post for the warmth of some classic comfort food. The classy, yet casual Chesterfield restaurant offers the best of traditional family favorites – pork chops, fried chicken, steaks and fresh seafood, as well as an array of appetizers and salads, complete with wine pairings and signature cocktails. It’s good food at an excellent value, says Mark Weber, managing general partner. “Patrons can get a complete dinner with cocktails for $25 per person.” Guests have the rare opportunity to choose from four distinct dining areas in the spacious, yet cozy restaurant. Groups can reserve the Wine Room (accommodates 40), The Post Room (accommodates 40) or the Garden Room (accommodates 60) for private holiday parties, cocktail receptions, rehearsal

dinners, wedding showers and other special occasions. The Post Room and Garden Room, which overlook a beautifully landscaped courtyard and waterfall, can be combined for parties with up to 100 guests, Weber says. “We customize every party to fit patrons’ needs,” he notes. Bishop’s Post also offers catering – for pickup or nearby delivery – including hot and cold appetizers and canapes like its signature shrimp, crab cakes, calamari, bruschetta and tenderloin carpaccio. Special wine lovers’ events also are held throughout the year, including a wine tasting the third Saturday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m., where guests can get a taste of the restaurant’s 130-bottle domestic, European and South American selection. “We have the best-value wine list in the area because we want people to taste these specialty wines,” Weber says, adding that guests can indulge in everything from a

$4 glass to a $300 bottle. Patrons also can enjoy bargain prices on wine, beer and spirits, as well as appetizer specials, during the restaurant’s Happy Hour, held Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. At Bishop’s Post, guests can count on topnotch, timeless fare, as well as a healthy helping of hospitality, Weber says. “The objective is to take care of people the way we would like to be taken care of – we take care of everyone.” The friendly neighborhood establishment regularly welcomes crowds of couples and families to large groups, Weber adds. “It’s a restaurant that can appeal to everyone.”

r. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one D of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping
patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).
NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electroimpedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.
Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.
Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.
Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

There are things in life you would never choose. That’s when you choose us. No one would choose heart disease or stroke. No one would choose to watch a child fight cancer. No one would choose to be afraid, or to feel vulnerable. But when those things happen, you can choose to go where the world’s best medicine is made even better. The hospitals of BJC HealthCare.
