from the

EDITOR ‌hen I started studying journalism at the University of Missouri, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to share the stories of people making a difference in the world. I wanted to shine a light on the good, which too often seems to be overshadowed by the bad. For five years I was in that realm, working for daily and weekly newspapers, sharing stories about crime, city meetings and more. Although I loved putting my degree into practice, I craved that good news. As if by chance, I was told about the managing editor position at Ladue News. If I’m being honest, I nearly didn’t apply. It was my dream position, yes; however, I didn’t feel deserving. After three or four independent nudges to apply, though, I did. And I’m so thankful I did. Nearly four years ago, I stepped into the role as managing editor of Ladue News. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented and strong group of individuals. I’ve had the opportunity to share the story of a woman changing people’s lives from something as simple as bread. I’ve had the opportunity to tell the story of a Kirkwood woman creating capes for kids fighting diseases of all shapes and sizes. I’ve had the opportunity to create another magazine within the Ladue News family called ABODE, which turned out to be a stunning showcase in and of itself. I’ve had the opportunity to have my hands in countless stories about people in the metropolitan area striving toward one thing: bettering our community.

at this stage in my life, I know stepping away to raise my little family is what is best. While it truly was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, I am confident that Ladue News will flourish in its new season. Next week, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the new face of Ladue News, Emily Adams. Adams shares my passion for this publication, and I know her talent will drive Ladue News forward, continuing the coverage you all know and love – and then some. I look forward to reading Ladue News from afar. It has been a pleasure sharing this community’s stories, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future of this marvelous magazine. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

PURSES & PUMPS FOR POOCHES & PALS Photos and story by Diane Anderson

T

he Humane Society of Missouri’s Purses & Pumps for Pooches & Pals event recently drew more than 400 professional women for an evening of networking, tastings from the area’s finest restaurants and a highly anticipated raffle of designer purses and shoes, all to help the society investigate, heal and prevent animal abuse. In recognition of the tragic loss last July of a dear friend and benefactor, the society also honored Janet Torrisi-Mokwa. In addition to serving on the society’s board of directors and co-founding its Women’s Leadership Council, Torrisi-Mokwa founded the present event, which has garnered nearly $1 million over the years to help homeless animals. Co-chairing this year’s event were Judy Calhoun and Harika Fava. Pam Nicholson served as honorary chairperson.

IMAGINE! PLANTING SEEDS OF HOPE GALA Photos and story Micah Usher

T

he Assistance League of St. Louis held its annual Imagine! Planting Seeds of Hope Gala earlier this month at Olivette’s Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. The event featured a cocktail hour and dinner, followed by a silent auction and a live auction. Karen Pennington chaired the event, and Rene Knott, co-anchor of KSDK’s Today St. Louis TV program, served as auctioneer. Jane Harbron, the league’s president, gave the opening and closing remarks. A wholly volunteer organization, the league dedicates itself to philanthropic programs serving the unmet needs of under served children and adults in the metro area.

Funds from this annual event are critical in helping us transform the lives of thousands of children and adults in our community. From providing new school uniforms and 22 other clothing and personal items to deserving children to getting necessities to women and children in shelters, our 500-member, all-volunteer force annually reaches more than 50,000 adults and children thanks to funds from this event. THe ArTHrITIS FOUNDATION

potlight WHAT/WHEN/WHERE By Maggie Peters

Arthritis Foundation 39th annual Silver Ball Saturday, Dec. 7 6 p.m. to midnight Grand Hall at Union Station, 1820 Market Street, St. Louis Join the Arthritis Foundation at the beautifully renovated Grand Hall at Union Station for cocktails, dinner, live and silent auctions. This fundraiser goes toward helping the foundation research a cure for arthritis and for programs to better the lives of people suffering from the disease. Register online at arthritis.org/silverballstl

MissioN:

39TH ANNuAl silvER BAll:

Whether supporting those fighting their everyday battles with arthritis or advocating on the steps of Capitol Hill, the Arthritis Foundation is leading the way in the fight for the cure. The foundation has served communities in chapters throughout the U.S. for more than 70 years. “The foundation really puts its money where its mouth is, and that’s very admirable,” says volunteer marketing chair Sherrie Wehner. In Missouri alone more than 1.3 million people are affected by arthritis, and it had been shown to be a leading cause in work place absences in the U.S. The foundation’s mission is to fund research to help find a cure and to help people who are suffering live their lives to the fullest. It also seeks to educate people on the wide-spread, but seldom truly talked about, disease. “[Arthritic affects] a huge number,” Wehner confirms. “It’s big, it’s painful and it’s expensive. It’s something everyone hears about and knows about but doesn’t really understand the impact until it touches them personally.”

The Arthritis Foundation Silver Ball will be held at the newly renovated Grand Hall at Union Station on December 7 from 6 p.m. to midnight. One of the longest-running charity galas in the area, the Silver Ball chose to move to a new location this year. “When you think about a charity gala that has been around for almost 40 years you think of history and tradition,” Wehner explains. “Moving to this beautifully renovated piece of history just made sense.” The foundation will host both a silent and live auction during the night as well as present three awards: Alice Ludmer will be awarded Honorary Chair for her personal experience with rheumatoid arthritis; Dr. Austin Dalrymple, DO, pediatric rheumatologist, will be awarded the Medical Champion award; and the Leon Neuman Distinguished Service award to Wehner and her husband Bruce. Wehner encourages all who are able to do so to attend the fundraising event. “We look to educate people and have a fun night to help us with our mission … to cure arthritis.” Arthritis Foundation Missouri Chapter, 9433 Olive Street, Suite 100, 314-499-8452, arthritis.org/missouri Silver Ball Chairwoman peggy Northcott and Honorary Chairwoman Alice Ludmer

ON CLOUD NINE

By Emily Adams

A

130-year-old home in Webster Groves challenged Anne Marie Boedges’ creativity in ways that had her reaching for the sky. Her clients, a recently retired couple who spent the better part of 20 years traveling, decided to put down roots when they found a simple, sweet cottage home with character for days. However, the renovation turned out to be anything but simple. The home’s only bathroom, on the first floor, left much to be desired, with nonreplaceable glass tile and a nonfunctioning shower. “In my opinion, choosing the materials to make it pretty is the easy part,” says Boedges, of Wildwood’s Anne Marie Design Studio. “It’s the figuring out how to make this thing work that’s the struggle.” Nearly immediately, it became evident to Boedges and her team that the only direction to go with the master bath was up. This discovery led to a master bedroom and bath suite in none other than the attic of the home. The team started with a large, luxurious shower that would end up being the centerpiece of the room, two separate vanities, delicate jewelry pieces for the hardware and fixtures, and marblelooking tile and countertops that paid homage to the quaint style of the home. “All of the pieces tied into the age of the house, so it does look more updated in the house, but the style is still appropriate for the space and for them,” Boedges says. Despite the creative challenge the age of this home presented, Boedges says the two-month project gave her an appreciation for older architecture she’ll never forget: “There’s so much density in an old structure like this. They built things with so much care and time and quality back then that it’s lasted for 130 years without any serious maintenance issues. Houses are just not built in the same way anymore – things weren’t rushed, and they all had so many charming specific details throughout.” The respect for historic properties is one Boedges hopes to inspire in her clients and in homeowners in general. “Homeowners should be so appreciative of the opportunity to work with and live in an old house,” she says. “You can create spaces that you never even thought were an option in an older house if you just step outside of the box.”

A Kirkwood boutique design firm leverages a fervor for finding solutions to architectural problems to make spaces sing.

H

ome design requires more than just creativity. Whether the project involves renovating, rebuilding, redesigning or, more broadly, reimagining – problem-solving lies at the heart of any architecture project. The wife-and-husband duo who run Kirkwood’s Studio Lark never lose sight of this reality. “Architecture and interior design are the perfect blend of creative freedom and problem-solving, which is what I love about design” says Jessica Senne, co-owner and co-founder of the design firm with her husband, Aaron. “Running the business is like that, too—it’s problem-solving on steroids.” The firm – which primarily works in the residential realm, but occasionally delves into more commercial projects – uses a hands-on approach to transform clients’ wants and needs into amazing new and renovated spaces. This proactive mentality offers insight into the Sennes’ design approach. Both of them studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. Jessica Senne is also an NCIDQ-certified interior designer through the Alexandria, Virginia-based Council for Interior Design Qualification. She tends to run the business side of the firm while her spouse typically handles the projects. Studio Lark first began in 2012 as a side business in the couple’s previous home and workspace on Lark Avenue. The Sennes held day jobs in the industry before Aaron committed full time in 2017, and Jessica followed in 2018 when she left a position as a tenured design professor, on anything but a lark. A tough decision, she admits, but one that proves a powerful pledge to their clients. “I think the real difference is for us, when you work and you’re done at 5 or 6, you can compartmentalize and come back to it, or it’s the weekend, and you’re done,” Aaron Senne says. “[But with this business] you become very emotionally involved with and close to your clients. You know a lot about them. You just think about it constantly – you’re involved so much deeper in every project.” With a combined 20-plus years of experience, the Studio Lark team handles everything from single-room remodels to additions to entire home renovations and new build projects. No matter the project, the Sennes approach each with the goal of truly understanding what the clients want, even if the clients aren’t entirely sure what they want. “They may say they want to add a bedroom or renovate a space, but we may drill down into that and understand that their kid is 16, and they’ll be out of the house in two years, so maybe they need to do this instead,” Aaron Senne explains. “Where

we come in as designers is taking what their goals are and taking the house or site or commercial space, and then using our design skills to interpret that and merge those two paradigms together.” Throughout this process, the team utilizes tracing paper sketches – lots and lots of sketches – to pitch ideas to clients, including determining materials, textures and other details that add unique personal touches. “In short, it’s a messy, squishy process that really relies on a lot of time and a lot of drawing,” Jessica Senne says. And they want clients’ honesty, no matter what. “We want them to tell us when they hate something,” says Aaron Senne with a chuckle. “I think we can bring ideas to clients, and the really good clients that challenge us bring out the best work. [We’re] hands-on throughout the entire process, but 90 percent of decisions are made when a construction permit is in hand.” Contractors are hired once everything is decided, and soon after that, the project begins. The team has a particular affinity for working with midcentury modern homes, which, in their eyes, evoke something beyond the cookie-cutter homes so prevalent today. They mention Finnish midcentury modern architect Alvar Aalto as a particularly admired source of inspiration. “A lot of it has to do with nostalgia, but we actually think it’s deeper than that,” Jessica Senne says. “People buy midcentury modern homes because there’s a quality of life and a kind of feeling that comes from living in those houses that are the reason that people are wanting to buy them and preserve them.” The two have an easy, welcoming rapport that can shift seamlessly from discussing day-to-day business dealings to Scandinavian design and longtime influences. It’s this dynamic that propels Studio Lark forward and distinguishes it from similar boutique firms. “I think that the fact that we are a husband-and-wife team is something that really sets us apart,” Jessica Senne says. “Our projects are really personal, and we do bring that kind of balance between feminine and male perspectives.” Studio Lark opened a new office in downtown Kirkwood this past summer and now staffs two employees, but Jessica Senne maintains that it will always remain a boutique firm, even if its team is constantly daydreaming. As for what’s next, it’s simple – pursuing the pair’s passion. “Every single day, we love it,” Jessica Senne says. Studio Lark, 118 E. Jefferson Ave., Suite 201, Kirkwood, 314-698-2041 studiolark.us

BAGS

‌Things for daph. are looking up – or rather, popping up! – in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. Daphne Benzaquen, the founder of daph., a Peruvian lifestyle brand, opened a pop-up shop just in time for the season of shopping at 314 N. Euclid Ave. “Being an online brand, I wanted to provide my clients with the hands-on experience to feel and smell and try on all of our pieces,” Benzaquen says. “I thought having a holiday pop-up would be a great opportunity to bring our brand to life. Instead of a virtual experience, a hands-on experience. “It’s the first time we are going to have a presence in St. Louis, which is really exciting for me because the St. Louis community has been really supportive.” Benzaquen launched her online brand of bags and accessories in 2017 after failing to find a backpack that fit her personal needs. The pop-up will not only feature these beautiful bags (in all the colors that are available online) but also will introduce something new and exciting. “I am launching my new apparel line,” Benzaquen says with glee. Benzaquen describes her winter apparel collection as an elevated woman’s day-to-night leisure line. “When I was designing this collection, I was just thinking of all the endless to-do lists women have in their daily lives,” Benzaquen says. “I want to create pieces that are versatile, so you can match them with each other but also with other wardrobe staples – whether [that staple is] a black turtleneck, a jean jacket, a scarf or booties.” Benzaquen ensures the line holds true to the daph. brand by showcasing the Peruvian spirit, resources and craftsmanship. “I just really like using all the resources available to Peru,” Benzaquen says. “So like with my bags, I use the llama leather and the baby alpaca fur, and I thought those were really unique materials; so bringing the pima cotton, as well as the alpaca fleece, I thought those were all unique materials new to the U.S. market, while showcasing the quality of Peruvian resources.” The winter collection specifically features four fashionable pieces: alpaca wide leg pants, a pima open cardigan, a pima V-neck sweater and, Benzaquen’s

36   November 29, 2019 | LadueNews.com

favorite, alpaca joggers. “[The joggers] are made from alpaca fleece, and I love wearing them around when I’m working from home,” Benzaquen says, “but I also love throwing on heels and a leather jacket and just going to happy hour with friends. So I just love that whole versatility and the warmth of it because they are so soft – so for this winter weather, they are perfect.” Benzaquen adds that the winter collection line was also designed with her bags in mind. “My apparel pieces were designed to go with my bags, color- and utility-wise,” she says. “You are just growing with the brand, and [daph. is] providing you with everyday essentials that are made to last.” Benzaquen even shared an “inside scoop” about the future of daph. Let’s just say things are looking bright – quite literally. “Samples are coming in soon [for spring] – it’s all

centered on surprise and lots of bright colors, which is a very different change for me,” Benzaquen shares. “I have definitely pushed myself out of my comfort zone when I designed that collection, and it will have an apparel line to go with it as well, but the bag will definitely be the showcase of the collection.” One such item – a weekender featuring a wine bottle pocket – will have ladies swooning and saying, “Alpaca my bags; let’s go, girls.” As for this season, though, be sure to pop over to daph.’s first pop-up, where 20 percent of the proceeds will be given back to a cause that has always inspired Benzaquen. “We will continue to donate a portion of every single purchase to specialneeds schools in Peru,” she says. “That continues to be a very important value to us.”

For the HOME BARTENDER By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos by Sarah Conroy

Infamously, diverse spirits bedeviled Scrooge, but Ladue News staffers, by and large, have no problem with them whatsoever. As a result, for this section, a bit of independent “research” preceded consultation with Vijay Shroff, the accommodating new owner of The Wine and Cheese Place, who kindly recommended a number of potential bibulous gifts for the holiday season, as well as a scrumptious nosh to accompany them.

GOLF GRAPEVINE

Season’s End!

By Warren Mayes

Kirkwood’s Family Golf and Learning Center

PORT, CALLAHAN, ALLEN NAMED PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

St. Joseph’s Academy Angels

‌ANGELS TAKE FOURTH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE The metro area excelled in recent state high school girls golf. More specifically, the St. Joseph’s Academy Angels earned their fourth consecutive Class 2 girls golf state title. In the two-day tourney – amid windy conditions at the Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, Missouri – the Frontenac team burned the course. St. Joseph’s shot a 299 in the first round and finished with a 607 – the best Angels score ever at state. It gave them a 15-shot advantage over runner-up Notre Dame de Sion of Kansas City. That margin of victory marked the Angels’ biggest in the last four years, topping St. Joseph’s earlier best score in that time by 16 shots. Also, for the second consecutive year, all five Angels made the all-state team, which comprises the top 15 finishers. Their win last year marked the first time in Missouri history all five girls from a team accomplished the feat. All girls earn medals. Senior Grace Aromando shot rounds of 76 and 74, and junior Drew Nienhaus had rounds of 72 and 78. Each finished with a 150, to spark St. Joseph’s victory. The girls tied for fourth place. Nichole Rallo came in eighth with a 153, and sophomore sister Mia, who had a first-round 84 but then shot a 75, finished ninth with a 159. Sophomore Isabella Arro, who watched the state tourney as a freshman, came in 12th with a 162. It thrilled the team to win the state title again – earning St. Joseph’s the most championships in Missouri history, with nine.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association recently honored its players of the year at the association’s award reception at Ladue’s Old Warson Country Club. For the 18th time, Ellen Port earned the 2019 Women’s Player of the Year Award for various accomplishments. Specifically, she earned a runner-up finish in the 27th Women’s Amateur Championship; was the North & South Senior Women’s Champion; took part in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championships; and placed fourth in the MGA Women’s Amateur and second in the MGA Women’s Mid-Amateur. Crimson Callahan, meanwhile, earned the 2019 Men’s Player of the Year Award; his victory in the Old Warson Cup in May allowed him to take the lead in the player of the year race without ever looking back. Callahan’s accomplishments in earning this laurel involved taking the aforesaid victory at Old Warson; tying for fourth in the Metropolitan Amateur Championship; being a 2019 U.S. Open (First Stage) qualifier; placing third in the Normandie Amateur; reaching the quarterfinals of the MGA Amateur Championship; being a match-play qualifier in the St. Louis District Golf Association’s Griesedieck Championship; and tying for 17th place in the MGA stroke-play championship. Finally, Buddy Allen earned the 2019 Senior Men’s Player of the Year Award, with his finish in the 2019 MGA Senior Amateur Championship allowing him to surpass 2019 MAGA Senior Champion Mike O’Neill and to earn his second consecutive Senior Player of the Year laurel. Allen’s accomplishments in earning that laurel involved tying for 11th place in the 27th Senior Amateur Championship; being senior division champion in the East Side Amateur and STLDGA Cassett senior champion; and tying for 32nd place in the 29th Amateur Championship, 14th place in the MGA Senior Amateur Championship, 28th place in the MGA Stroke Play Championship and seventh place in the Normandie Amateur.

BIERMANN TOPS TOURNEY

Brooke Biermann won the Class 2 state girl’s golf tourney individual championship at Silo Ridge. Biermann shot a two-day total of 143 to win her first state championship, with rounds of 74 and 69 to finish 1 under par – the sole golfer to come in under par. Moreover, the junior at Lafayette High School in Wildwood had to rally to earn her victory, having trailed Notre Dame de Sion junior Megan Propeck, who won the last Class 2 titles by three strokes after Brooke Biermann the first round. “It’s so nice to be the state champion,” Biermann says. “I was recognized at halftime of the football game [Chesterfield’s Marquette High School at Lafayette], and the crowd cheered. … It was one of my goals for my golf career. It’s good to check this one off my list.” Biermann, who finished fourth and second in her first two trips to the Class 2 state tourney, continues: “The past two years, I was so close, but I didn’t win either time. Being a state champion is something I can say forever. It’s awesome. I just wish my team could have been there and played, too.”

LOCAL FACILITY WILL REINVENT GOLF PRACTICE In October, construction started on a 12,500-squarefoot state-of-the-art facility at Kirkwood’s Family Golf and Learning Center. The new clubhouse – scheduled to open next summer – will reinvent what golf practice looks like in the area, offering players of all skill levels a full-service, affordable way to play and grow their game year-round.

A new cookbook series brings to your tAble the most cherished recipes from some of the AreA’s best-known chefs.

T

he Small Circle cookbook series brings a lot to the table, both figuratively and literally. Compared to the $70 behemoths stacked in your pantry, each Moleskine-sized volume of Small Circle is a manageable notebookstyle collection that features 10 to 12 recipes submitted by a single well-known area chef. The recipes are a “full table’s worth” of dishes that the chef would cook for his or her friends and family at large gatherings, including personal favorite go-tos. Co-founders R.J. Hartbeck and Mary von der Heydt say each volume in the series is a “living document” that contains approachable recipes “from one chef’s small circle to yours.” “There are dishes that [chefs] make and stories that they tell that don’t fit into that established brand at the restaurant they’re currently leading,” von der Heydt says. “One thing that’s so special about St. Louis is that you can get access to these incredible chefs just by introducing yourself.” The collaborating chef for the first volume is Ben Grupe, who was instrumental in helping the project take off. Grupe made waves here from his time spent at St. Louis’ Elaia and Olio, as well as international culinary competitions, and he’s currently in the process of opening his own St. Louis restaurant, Tempus, this year. “[Grupe] specifically said to us that people perceive him as this fine dining guy, but there’s another side of him that he’d really like to share,” von der Heydt says. “That insight helped us develop the concept. If he felt this way, other chefs felt this way, too.” The trio teamed up and worked for a year to create Small Circle. The finished product, released in summer r.J. hartbeck and mary von der heydt of 2019, is the first in a quarterly cookbook series. Each volume contains a short introduction of the collaborating chef, easy-to-follow recipes that range from entrées to sides to desserts and that are accompanied by the backstory of why the chef wanted to include a particular dish, and plenty of room for readers’ notes and stories. “The interactive notebook aspect came from myself personally cooking with my mom with cookbooks and reading her notes in the margin,” von der Heydt says. “When people are cooking, they take notes, and we wanted to leave space for that in the document so that it can become a part of your kitchen and grow and change in whatever personal way interests you.” Von der Heydt fleshes out the stories from the contributing chefs and styles the food for the photos, while Hartbeck shoots all photos and leads branding and marketing initiatives. The meat – so to speak – of the cookbooks comes from the chefs themselves. “Ben has so many different layers to who he is as a chef,” Hartbeck says. “He’s been competing as a chef at such a high level, which is such a unique thing. It requires him to have a technical expertise to the way he creates food. Plus, he’s really creative with the dishes.” Grupe’s recipes in the book range from sous vide Korean short ribs to a savory cipollini onion tarte tatin to baked halibut with mustard crème fraîche. “My dad says that if he could, he’d put that halibut sauce on his Cheerios,” von der Heydt says with a laugh.

It’s important to the couple to emphasize the approachability of the recipes in the series. “We don’t want people to be intimidated by the caliber of the chefs because the nature of the project is that anyone who cooks can cook these at home,” von der Heydt says. “For example, Ben has this dish that we made this week where you cook carrots in carrot juice [for a cumin-carrot confit]. It seems so simple, but it infuses this amazing flavor. It’s incredible.” “And we want readers to be able to cook all of the recipes in each book and have that feeling of accomplishment, of being able to make your way all the way through a cookbook,” Hartbeck adds. The second volume of the series is set to be published before the end of the year and will feature recipes from Michael and Tara Gallina, co-owners of St. Louis’ Vicia and the team behind the refreshed Winslow’s Table (née Winslow’s Home), also of St. Louis. Recipes will feature the signature vegetable-forward mentality the Gallinas employ at their award-winning restaurant, with a deep focus on simplicity and technique. “Something as simple as how to cook an egg is going to be really fun to share with readers using the creative – yet uncomplicated – way they cook food,” Hartbeck says. The third and fourth chefs will be announced after the second volume is complete. All volumes will be available to purchase individually for $15 online, or interested parties can purchase a $50 subscription for all four volumes that are currently in the works. As of now, the first volume, with Grupe, can be purchased at Rise Coffee House and Urban Matter, both of St. Louis, and the second, with the Gallinas, will be available at Winslow’s Table and Vicia, with more retail spots added as they’re confirmed. Von der Heydt and Hartbeck are most excited about creating this special, personal cookbook series for chefs, who can share it on their host stands or bars, and also with the area community that they’ve been able to connect with via their own circle. “We would love for people to bring it into their homes and make it a part of their family,” von der Heydt says. “The chefs are sharing their personal recipes and stories, but we want readers to make it personal, as well.” Small Circle, smallcirclerecipes.com

MOVERS & SHAKERS

arris HFRANK

H

arris Frank calls himself “the last man standing.” A founder of the St. Louis Senior Olympics and the National Senior Olympics, he has outlived the community partners who helped him produce the first events. Personable, with a keen intellect even at the age of 94, Frank continues his generous volunteer efforts and philanthropy to make St. Louis a better place to live. A man of great breadth with an infectious spirit, Frank was a past chair of the Jewish Community Centers Association (now the JCC) when tasked with creating a milestone anniversary celebration for that organization. The first-ever St. Louis Senior Olympics was a huge success and continues today. Ten years later, Frank and friend Kenneth Marshall led an effort to create a national event, originally called the National Senior Olympics. They contacted leaders conducting games for seniors in other states and, in 1987, presented the first National Senior Olympic Games in St. Louis involving more than 2,400 competitors in 15 sports. Two years later, the second games hosted 3,400 senior athletes in St. Louis. “After that, the games moved to a different city every two years to stimulate more awareness and participation around the country,” Frank says. Now called the National Senior Games, the organization includes 53 member-qualifying games in every state, as well as Washington, D.C. In June, Frank was introduced at the national games in Las Vegas as one of the original members of its steering committee. “The event this year drew 14,000 competitors,” he says. “I am so proud that it is now the largest sporting event for seniors in the history of the world. I admit that I originally thought it was a terrible idea. I also thought building the Arch was an awful idea. It goes to show that you are human when you realize you were wrong.” Lynn Wittels, president and CEO of the JCC, says: “Harris Frank is a true visionary model. Today, the National Senior Games continue to bring seniors together and provide a great motivation to keep seniors active and engaged. More important, the St. Louis Senior Olympics and the National Senior Games help provide an opportunity for seniors to remain connected to one another. What a legacy! “Most board chairs move on after their tenure as chair expires. Not Harris. He remains interested in our work and the impact his philanthropic support helps create.” Born and raised in St. Louis, Frank graduated from Country Day School (now MICDS). He vividly remembers his first exposure to philanthropy during a school visit to the South Side YMCA. “Each of us [at Country Day School] was asked to bring a softball or basketball for the kids there,” Frank recalls. “Those kids had

nothing. They had a place to play with no equipment. This made an indelible impression on me and got me started helping others. It is unbelievable how just one thing can trigger how you live your life.” In 1945, all at the same time, Frank received his Bachelor of Science degree in naval science, Navy commission and degree from the University of California. He and his late wife, Judy, wed shortly after. Married for 62 years, the couple had two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Frank worked as an agent at Solon Gershman Inc./Gershman Commercial Real Estate for more than 50 years. Believing that “busy people get things done,” he helped establish a “friends” committee at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and served on the board of Jewish Hospital of St. Louis for 14 years. As a past chair of the JCCA and a past president of Jewish Federation of St. Louis, Congregation Shaare Emeth and Westwood Country Club, Frank relishes socializing and a good round of golf. Customarily, he tees off with longtime buddy Jay Straus, who has won 11 championships at Westwood. “It’s a great game,” Frank says. “When Jay hits the ball into the sand trap, I go in and get it for him. After all, he’s 105.”

aco Circus, in St. Louis’ Southwest Garden neighborhood, continues to specialize in Austin-style Tex-Mex, but lately has transformed from fast casual to full service, with expanded comfort food and a brandnew bar program. “The original Taco Circus was a counter-service taqueria strictly highlighting perfectly executed proteins,” owner Christian Ethridge says of the eatery’s earlier incarnation in St. Louis’ Bevo neighborhood. “The new one [is] that but much more of a sit-down experience, with Tex-Mex combo plates. “We’ll still be focusing on executing those proteins perfectly and can also take care of vegetarians a lot

more. We’re also making our own corn and flour tortillas, which is a huge deal because freshly made, pillowy flour tortillas are unsurpassed.” Ethridge partners with Sean Baltzell and Casey Colgan on the venture. The restaurant fills roughly 2,500 square feet previously occupied by Three Flags Tavern and features kitschy collectibles belonging to ex-Texan Ethridge. In the kitchen, he works with a team including kitchen manager Cesar Correa, formerly of Nixta in St. Louis’ Botanical Heights neighborhood, to realize an elaborate menu. “We have more Mexican Americans along with myself from different areas, so now we are bringing regionalism into the fold, which is very much at the core of Tex-Mex

By Mabel Suen – taking the best aspects of regional Mexican cuisine and folding it into comfort food,” Ethridge says. Highlights from the menu include the Mexican Flag Burrito, with a 12-inch tortilla stuffed with the diner’s choice of chicken, pork steak, veggies or skirt steak. The burrito comes smothered in queso blanco, salsa verde and salsa ranchero, and served with rice and beans. Another large-plate highlight, the Chilaquiles aka Chilly Killy, involves a large bed of tortilla chips ladled with chicken, salsa verde, sour cream, guacamole, refried beans, fried potatoes, cilantro, onion, Monterrey Jack – and four eggs. like the signature Willie Nelson, with marinated, chargrilled skirt steak, pico de gallo and sour cream. To drink, guests can choose from options including house-made horchata; draft, canned and bottled beer; and cocktails like the Purple Margarita, with overproof tequila, Plantation O.F.T.D. Rum, lemon, sugar and cassis. That last, in particular, should help guests steady themselves before enjoying the angelic (if sometimes anguished) delights of It’s a Wonderful Life from Metro Theater Company. “We’re looking forward to introducing Taco Circus to a wider audience now that we’re centralized and really become the go-to place for highly executed Tex-Mex comfort food in the city,” Ethridge says. “It’s a really great venue for people to build memories with their friends and family.”

Taco Circus, 4940 Southwest Ave., St. Louis,

‌Story: It’s almost time for KMTC Radio’s “live” annual broadcast version of It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve, 1949. There’s a big problem, however: The cast unfortunately decided to dine on the tuna melt special at a nearby café, and now they’re all too sick to perform. Will that disaster force the station to cancel its popular holiday presentation? Luckily, despite shaky knees and initial hyperventilation, staff scriptwriter June Kelly convinces the in-house staff to divide the roles in their adaptation of the beloved holiday classic. Station announcer Chester Collins confidently informs June that he’s an “actor” and can assume any role. Floyd Rogers, the sound effects specialist, likewise assures her he can deliver the appropriate noises at the right times in the script. Finally, receptionist Minnie Hoople volunteers that she plays piano and can tickle the ivories on the house baby grand to bolster the effort, and station manager Vera Hayes is ready to give it the old college try, too. They need only someone to play George Bailey, Bedford Falls’ intrepid building and loan owner and the lead character in It’s a Wonderful Life, who considers suicide when crotchety town businessman Mr. Potter, in George’s hour of need, informs him that his insurance policy makes George worth more dead than alive. James Stewart (who starred in Frank Capra’s 1946 cinematic classic in real life) is nowhere to be found – but what about delivery man Walter Bell? He arrives at the station with a package, his final delivery of the day before heading home to dine with his wife and daughter and listen to the KMTC broadcast himself. After some initial hesitation, Walter succumbs to Vera’s and Minnie’s entreaties to star in the broadcast. Can these behind-the-scenes folks and a friendly messenger pull off a real-life radio broadcast – in front of a huge studio audience, no less? Stay tuned! Highlights: Metro Theater Company offers a bright, energetic and uplifting holiday show with plenty of laughs, good cheer and poignant moments for children and adults alike. Other Info: Metro wisely decided not to simply stage a play version of Capra’s classic. It’s often difficult for any other actor to compete with an iconic screen performance like Stewart’s, which almost necessarily would be etched into the psyches of audiences checking out a theatrical effort. Instead, playwright John Wolbers uses the backdrop of a 1940s radio station in St. Louis and the halcyon days of “live” radio broadcasts in the years before TV took over American living rooms. Contributing to the magic of this approach are technical team members scenic designer Jamie Perkins, costume designer Lou Bird, lighting designer

Catherine Adams, sound designer Rusty Wandall, properties master Katie Orr and scenic painter Christie Johnston, with artistic director Julia Flood directing the show. Wolbers’ script retains a number of memorable lines from the film but also properly focuses on the players in the radio production, to great benefit. Flood’s well-paced direction keeps everyone moving smoothly across the stage, allowing the audience to enjoy not only the speakers but also other characters and their reactions away from the microphones. The acting is delightful by the entire ensemble, led by Alecia Revé Like’s winning portrayal of relentlessly optimistic June. Carl Overly Jr. is a hoot as Chester. Abraham Shaw is convincing as the easy-going Walter. Roxane McWilliams delightfully zips around the stage to the in-house piano while handling sundry office chores, while Nicole Angeli brings vivacity, imagination and a treasure trove of laughs to the role of Ruby. Mindy Shaw does well as commonsense Vera, who instills a sense of order and composure to the station’s unexpected surprises for its annual broadcast, and Chris E. Ware is entertaining as the hardworking Floyd, who also has time to take on other roles. Metro’s It’s a Wonderful Life brings a captivating, classy good time to an appreciative audience – and makes for a terrific start to the holiday season.

A new music director seeks to orchestrate continued passion and audience admiration at the area’s most iconic symphonic institution.

M

usic unites us. Across generations, through time and between cultures, music thrills and challenges us and tugs at our heartstrings in ways that other media cannot. It can make us feel at home, even if home is thousands of miles away in a small town in northern France. Stéphane Denève knows this as well as anyone. In September 2019, the French-born musician and conductor began as the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s music director, making him the 13th individual to hold the title in the organization’s illustrious 140-year history. It’s an honor Denève cherishes. “It’s a very old orchestra – you could feel a lot of tradition and richness in the sound,” he says. “For me, it’s special. It’s really a dream come true to be music director here.” Denève’s impressive credentials include serving as chief conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 2005 to 2012 and then acting as the chief conductor of Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra through 2016, with additional positions and guest conductor stations in several cities around the Western world. He is also currently the chief conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic, a position he’s held since 2015. Denève first worked with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 2003 as a guest conductor – a title he would hold a total of eight times through 2018. He was named the local orchestra’s next music director in June 2017 and served as its music director designate in the 2018-19 season. During these experiences, he fell in love with the local orchestra. “It’s about chemistry,” Denève says. “You have to just feel the right chemistry between the conductor and the orchestra, and it seemed that it always worked together.” There’s no questioning Denève’s enthusiasm. Even over the phone, he’s effusive and lighthearted, playful in his language and his ideas. He readily compares composing and performing music to cooking a meal for your family, likening the two as “inviting people to share something you love.”

His zeal for music has already infected audiences, as the 2019-20 season is well underway. The major theme of this year’s season celebrates America’s connection to France – its composers, its people and the influences the two nations share. “This city has been linked to France before, and I wanted to make the point that music is something that [brings] us together,” says Denève of St. Louis. “Without music, I would not meet all these musicians all over the world and travel all over the world – and so I wanted to celebrate this great power to [bring] us together and make a season that reflects on the Franco-American friendship. I think it’s so important to exchange culture – the more you exchange, the less you fear.” The orchestra’s current season is composed of a variety of different performances, including Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, The Damnation of Faust – a favorite of Denève’s – The Nutcracker, a special sold-out concert that was conducted by legendary film composer John Williams, the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and even a symphonic play led by Denève himself. “[I want to build] trust with the audience by choosing pieces that please not only me and the orchestra but also that they can love,” he says. “I choose music that I believe is extremely emotional. I want to help the accessibility.” It’s a goal of Denève’s that he doesn’t take lightly. Before conducting performances, the music director typically addresses attendees – an unusual tactic before any show, but Denève’s way of opening up to the audience and of communicating his appreciation. Denève also welcomes modernity. He acknowledges the cliché that new orchestral music can be somehow difficult for audiences to appreciate, yet it’s hardly surprising that this music director’s nature leads him to embrace this challenge. As a result, listeners can expect three world premieres of pieces commissioned by the local orchestra featuring more than 10 working composers. “You have to respect the past to see the future, but my big passion is to identify the pieces that I think could stand the test of time and become the repertoire of the future,” Denève says. Other efforts to make the local orchestra more accessible include lowering entry costs for a number of shows. The idea is that people will begin to see the orchestra not as something stuffy and unapproachable but as an alternative to a night at the movies – thanks in part to $15 ticket prices. This tactic perfectly jibes with Denève’s goal to make music for the community because he wants the orchestra to be for everyone. “Music – and symphonic music particularly – feeling the energy and vibration, it’s a very spiritual experience,” he says. “It’s real.” St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, 718 N. Grand Blvd., St. Louis, 314-533-2500, slso.org
