ith winter come cold, flu and new COVID-19 restrictions, and shoppers everywhere are looking for the best way to show their loved ones they care while keeping safe and healthy for the holidays. Genovese Jewelers is your answer; the local, family-run jeweler has the inventory and the flexibility to give those you love beautiful gifts without leaving the house. “We’re wanting to make buying as easy as it would be on Amazon,” explains executive buyer Katie Kelly. “We’ll ship; we’ll do curbside pickup; we’ll do whatever it takes to make it work. Safety and health is the most important thing right now, so we’re trying to meet everyone’s comfort level.” Genovese offers a large selection of jewelry, designed and created in-house, starting as low as $300. “We’re ready for the holidays,” Kelly says. “Everybody is spending a little different this year, [but] they still want to do something memorable that will last a lifetime. We’ve been very busy, and we haven’t slowed down our buying.” For the holiday season, Kelly sees the jewelry trend leaning toward adding to the staple items of a jewelry wardrobe: diamond studs, bangle bracelets and diamond tennis necklaces.

“Once you have the staple items, there is a lot of stacking and mixing of different golds, as well as textures such as roping beading and chain-link styles,” Kelly says. “There’s always ways to elaborate and reinvent your pieces and make them more fashion forward.” Genovese’s storefront will be open this holiday season as well, with live music every Saturday in December. “The only difference is all of the new Covid-19 safety protocols we’re taking, sanitizing and wearing a mask. We’re keeping up the holiday spirit, even in trying times,” Kelly confirms. On top of shipping and curbside pickup, Genovese will FaceTime with clients over the custom jewelry process. The jeweler also has a Shopify page, where new products are being added every day. “This year, people are wanting to cherish each special occasion,” Kelly concludes. “At the end of the day, jewelry always makes you feel good. It brightens your day, and I think that for the holidays, what better to brighten your day than a box from Genovese?” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

KIDS MD

Have a Healthy

HOLIDAY By Dr. Joseph Kahn

W

e have cancelled or postponed vacations. We have worn masks and endlessly washed our hands. Fewer kids went trick-or-treating this year, and those who did had an experience very different from prior years. We have all made sacrifices as we attempt to keep ourselves and one another healthy and to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many months of living through the pandemic have resulted in loneliness and loss of connection, particularly for those who are trying to balance parenting, homeschooling and work. We are all tired of this, to say the least – and now it’s the holiday season. We are going to have to make difficult decisions about traditional family celebrations because even small gatherings have been associated with spread of the novel coronavirus. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued updated guidance for the holidays. These tips for in-person gatherings include continuing mitigation measures, such as holding events outdoors, limiting their size, having participants wear masks (especially indoors) and maintaining social distance. The CDC also encourages hosts to request that guests avoid contact with people from outside their household for two weeks before the activity. Other experts recommend that families in separate households meet in their homes at the same time and connect through a videoconferencing platform such as Zoom, which might give a sense of sharing the holiday. If members of different households congregate inside, opening windows would at least improve ventilation and could help diffuse the virus, reducing the chances of contagion. The impracticality of some of the safety measures will probably lead many to ignore these guidelines. It’s hard to fit everybody at a table 6 feet apart or to eat a meal outdoors in November in the Midwest. But these are the precautions we must all consider. It’s been a challenging year, and winter is shaping up to be even more difficult than the preceding seasons in terms of COVID-19. Above the normal need to be with others, the holidays bring with them the legacy of family traditions. Please be careful, respect the threat of the coronavirus and have a great – albeit a 2020 – holiday.

INNOVATION HUB

For the Modern Mom By Amanda Dahl

‌T

he breast pump was long overdue for an overhaul. Ask any mother who has used the electric-powered device, which was originally designed by a male Swedish inventor. Only in the past five years have companies seriously taken on the task of redesigning this common parenting tool. Babyation, based in St. Louis, is among those paving the way with technology that delivers a discreet design and function that is based around the mothers who are using it. “We’re anti-mom-shaming,” says co-founder and CEO Samantha Rudolph. “A woman – and, more broadly, a family – should be able to make the choices that are best for them, without insinuating judgments. Whenever we develop a new product, feature or anything, the first thing we do is talk to moms. That is an obvious but [often] underused strategy.”

The Babyation breast pump, which has its utility patent and FDA approval, features “the world’s smallest breast shields, which means you can do whatever else you need to while pumping,” Rudolph says. “You no longer have to opt out of your life.” Mothers can slip the breast shields under their bras and, with a quiet motor running unnoticed in the background, tend to familial needs – all while working or managing household responsibilities. Babyation has also developed an app that further simplifies breastfeeding. Rudolph provides a peek into the app’s usefulness, pre-launch, detailing that mothers will be able to see in realtime how much milk is expressed and how much milk is in the fridge or freezer; to control the pump’s speed and suction; to create customizable modes for different times throughout the day; and to set an auto-start feature for little interference throughout one’s

daily schedule. The breast pump also comes in a convenient carrying case, complete with a built-in ice pack, for easy maneuverability. “My North Star is and always will be our moms,” Rudolph says. “If I have a good day, it’s because I am doing this for moms, to make their lives easier, and playing a small part in this new motherhood journey. When I have a bad day, the thing that gets me up off the proverbial mat is thinking of our moms and their outpour of support. That’s what gets and keeps me going. There’s a tremendous opportunity for impact.” Whether you are on the path to parenthood or know a new mother who could benefit from Babyation’s intelligent innovations, join the breast pump waitlist or shop the other fab products sold at Babyation’s website.

HEALTHY APPETITE

CELERY ROOT AND PARSNIP

Latkes

Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott

L

atkes, along with other fried foods, are traditionally consumed during Hanukkah to commemorate the oil that burned for eight days when the Maccabees purified and rededicated the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. Although typically made with potatoes, latkes remain open to interpretation. During my time as a personal chef in New York, I experimented with different ways of cutting and grating the potatoes to achieve different textures, as well as other types of potatoes and assorted root vegetables for varying flavors. This latke recipe omits the potato completely in favor of celery root and apple, which provide earthiness and sweetness, respectively.

ln

Yields | 12 to 14 latkes |  1 lb celery root, peeled and grated  1 lb parsnips, cleaned and grated  1 medium onion, peeled and grated  1 small apple, grated  5 eggs  1 cup all-purpose flour

 1 Tbsp salt  1 tsp freshly ground black pepper  grapeseed oil  fresh herbs, chopped, for garnish  labneh or sour cream, for serving

| Preparation | In a medium bowl, combine celery root, parsnip, onion and apple. Add eggs, flour, salt and pepper; stir to incorporate. Heat 3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add celery root-parsnip mixture to skillet in heaping ¼-cup piles. Don’t overcrowd skillet – depending on its size, three to four latkes should fit. Crisp latkes for 3 to 4 minutes. Flip latkes; crisp on other side for 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer latkes to a paper towel-lined plate. Continuing to work in batches, repeat process until all celery root-parsnip mixture has been used. Garnish latkes with fresh herbs, and serve warm with labneh or sour cream.

ravel may be limited because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t mean area residents can’t experience a fabulous weekend getaway. Virtual gaming, full-service spas and award-winning cuisine are just a taste of the extravagant staycation amenities the metro area’s top hotels have to offer that will make you forget you’re in your hometown. The area’s luxury resorts are playing host to a large number of locals these days – all while keeping the pandemic in mind, so guests don’t have to – incorporating enhanced cleaning protocols and socially distanced amenities for a safe, stress-free stay. “It’s healthy to crave a change of scenery,” says Alper Oztok, general manager at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. “People are looking to get away without having to travel far and still have an all-inclusive experience.” The top-rated property is “a destination in itself,” Oztok notes, offering amazing views of the Gateway Arch from lavish guest rooms; a spacious, 12,000-square-foot spa; the Cinder House Restaurant by James Beard Award-winning chef Gerard Craft; full-service in-room dining; an outdoor heated pool; and its latest addition, the new eighth-floor Topgolf Swing Suite, featuring two simulator bays with a variety of virtual games, including the Topgolf target game, Zombie Dodgeball, Hockey Shots, Baseball Pitching and Carnival Classic. “It is truly a terrific amenity for guests of all ages,” Oztok says. “We often see couples enjoying it as a date night, families booking it as an indoor activity and business groups meeting after work. Guests can enjoy cocktails, beers, appetizers and more without having to leave the space.” More local guests also are checking into The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis for a relaxing escape, says the hotel’s general manager, Amanda

Joiner, who adds that weekend occupancy is up and many people are splurging on extras, such as the hotel’s bed and breakfast package for two, featuring complimentary valet parking and the relaxing comforts of room service. Staycationers also can treat themselves to their choice of luxurious accommodations, which include standard deluxe rooms with sweeping views of Clayton and the St. Louis skyline featuring the Gateway Arch, 11 miles east. Or double the fun with an executive suite, boasting a lovely living area with French doors, a separate bedroom, and a full bath and a half-bath, Joiner says, where “kids can have their own TV area, as well as enjoy time as a family, playing games.” The stunning Ritz-Carlton Suite, complete with a built-in fireplace, five balconies and a separate living area, makes for another “great getaway for three days,” Joiner says. “It even has a convection oven where you can bake cookies, and we recently had a mother and daughter do that. People are using the pandemic to make special moments for their families.” Guests also are indulging in room service, Joiner adds. “Everyone loves room service right now,” she says. “It’s a way to treat yourself and stay safe in a luxury environment.” And for guests looking to venture just outside their room, they can access the recently redesigned, members-only Cigar Club to “enjoy a great glass of red wine and a cigar, and take in some fall football,” Joiner says, although this experience is delayed with the most recent St. Louis County restrictions. Another local luxury staycation option for the area is The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta, which “has been turned into a city center resort, where guests [can] enjoy the hotel, its pool and the offerings in the Central West End and Forest Park for [an extended] weekend,”

says Frederik Houben, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “The Chase Park Plaza has one primary attribute no other hotel in St. Louis features: Out of 398 guest rooms and suites, only 133 are standard rooms,” Houben notes. “This [means] two-thirds of our guests will be staying with us in a suite.” So for locals dreaming of a grand getaway this winter, look no farther than the high-end hotels in your own backyard. I wanted to shine a spotlight on everyday women who are hustling and creating amazing companies and businesses and brands around the world. – ANNA KeeNAN

here is no one-size-fits-all blueprint to success, particularly for women. Anna Keenan, host of the locally based podcast Self Made Sister, sets out to answer the proverbial “How does she do it?” question in a way that will inspire more women to make a name for themselves. Self Made Sister turned one year old on October 17, celebrating alongside Keenan, who turned 37. The host chose to launch her podcast on her birthday because she wanted to start a new year in her life by putting her passion project “out there in the world.” “I wanted to shine a spotlight on everyday women who are hustling and creating amazing companies and businesses and brands around the world,” she says. “It’s been an incredible journey.” Her motivation behind Self Made Sister is to make women believe in themselves and in what they can achieve. “So often, we see women hit that level of success and think, ‘Oh – well, they’re different,’” Keenan explains. “They don’t know the story. They don’t know the highs, the lows, the good, the bad and all the stuff it took [ for these women] to get where they are.” After working for almost six years as a marketing and philanthropic manager at the American fashion design firm Kendra Scott, whose founder took “$500 and turned it into a billion-dollar company,” Keenan knows true success lies in the pursuit of one’s dreams. “One of my guests said, ‘Don’t wait for ‘one day’ – start at Day 1,” she relates. “That’s always resonated with me. ‘One day’ will never come – you create your Day 1. Don’t wait for it to be perfect because it won’t be. Don’t wait to have all the answers because you won’t. You grow, and there’s so much power in the growth.” Keenan, like the empowered women she interviews, has her own success story worthy of sharing. She recalls her first interview with Carissa Culiner of television’s E! News, whom she was thrilled to feature because they grew up together in Jefferson City.

“My Day 1 was messy,” Keenan says with a laugh. “It was definitely intimidating. Audio issues, connectivity issues; you forget to hit ‘record.’ Learning how to edit episodes was like a foreign language to me. Each day, I learned something new – and I still am!” In a single year, Keenan says she’s felt privileged to interview 36 female leaders everywhere from St. Louis to as far away as Australia and China. Throughout the journey, she’s spoken with Samantha Rudolph of Babyation about creating technology that helps women parent on their own terms. She’s talked to Kristen Tomlan of DO about inventing the world’s first gourmet edible and bakeable cookie dough. Zoe Scharf of Greetabl told Keenan all about taking the company’s novel gift package from a cereal box design to the totally customizable kit that’s earned recognition in O, The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times, theSkimm and BuzzFeed. All shared the same message: “You don’t get to skip Day 1,” Keenan says. “No one starts with a million followers and revenue streams. Everyone starts at Day 1. They all start at the same place. That’s really cool to show and share.” Self Made Sister is the platform through which Keenan highlights these ordinary beginnings by extraordinary women, showing her listeners that pursuing one’s passion can be not only realistic but also attainable. “The biggest takeaway is to just start,” Keenan says. “If you don’t, it’s always going to sit on your heart. There’s no better time than now to follow your dreams. Other women are doing it – and [my listeners] are just as capable as the women on my podcast.” Find Self Made Sister on your favorite podcast app or stream episodes at selfmadesister.com. his master bathroom remodeling project began in February with the usual excitement. Megan Temple, owner and principal designer of St. Louis-based firm Megan Temple Design, and her team were working with Maryland Heights’ Property Pros for the first time and anticipated a fabulous transformation throughout the home. Temple says her team was sourcing light fixtures and accessories when the pandemic tidal wave crashed over the metro area, delaying the project with various pieces on back order. Nevertheless, creative thinking and smart investments allowed for a unique space to emerge in time, styled with natural and dramatic greens, a statement rug and flea market finds discovered in the clients’ basement. The clients sought “something bright and clean and wanted to incorporate [a] love for plants,” Temple describes. She says the Webster Groves family had been sharing a bathroom, and the parents were ready to establish their own space separate from their kids’ space. They decided on a color palette first, and then the pieces started coming together. “I do extensive research during the concept stage with my clients,” Temple explains. “Green was a recurring color trend, as well as black-andwhite flooring.” All agreed on a white shower, but Temple aimed to make the necessary bathroom feature more visually appealing. Instead of standard subway tile, she played with scale and opted for a largerscale tile for the shower walls. Small, contrasting hexagonal tiles dot the bathroom floor. “One of my favorite elements is the custom black-and-white tile pattern on the bathroom floor,” Temple says. “I love that the pattern is not too specific – makes it timeless and more versatile. … The black matte fixtures provide the perfect contrast for a crisp look. he Sasha Nicholas mission has always been to make gatherings more meaningful and have a product that tells a story of where people come from. Founded in 2015, the brand today celebrates these meaningful moments with durable and modern monogrammed dinnerware. “They’re an heirloom that you know will stand the test of time,” says owner Lindsay Trulaske. “Our products are handcrafted and kiln-fired in our Kirkwood studio and either go to our store for local pickup or are shipped out nationwide.” Customers can come into the Ladue storefront or shop online. They can choose one piece or a collection before picking from Sasha Nicholas’ eight designs of monograms and five colors. “If a customer has a monogram already, such as a family crest, we can take that design with permission and use it on their piece,” Trulaske adds. Pieces can also include a personal inscription of up to 300 characters, placed on the back of a plate or the bottom of a Champagne bucket. “We’ve seen everything from Bible verses to jokes between

sorority sisters to important dates or addresses,” Trulaske says. “You can also do a handwritten message. We’ve taken old notes from grandparents and extracted letters to form phrases like ‘I love you.’ That’s the kind of icing on the cake of the product; it’s the kind of message that we see people tear up over.” The Ladue storefront carries luxury tabletop brands such as Anna Weatherley, Baccarat, Herend and Royal Copenhagen, making it a wedding registry destination. Sasha Nicholas offers an online, automated registry for out-of-town customers. “I think it may be the most rewarding part of my job, meeting customers when they come to us for their wedding registry and helping that same girl three years later when she’s purchasing pieces for her first child,” Trulaske says. Trulaske concludes that Sasha Nicholas products are modern and convenient for people today. “They tell the story of moments we share with one another in an everyday way.” Sasha Nicholas, 9752 Clayton Road, 314-997-5854, sashanicholas.com

DISCOVER HOW EVERY DONATION TO ST. LOUIS CHILDREN’S IS MORE THAN A GIFT

YOUR DONATION IS MORE THAN A GIFT Every gift made to St. Louis Children’s gives kids and their families access to world-class healthcare, scientific discoveries made by Washington University experts and innovative solutions for patients. Above all else, every donation helps us do what’s right for kids. Discover how your donations have been more than gifts for kids like Weston, Angelina and twins Wyatt and Ryder.

Angelina

Since she was young, Angelina experienced frequent seizures and was initially diagnosed with epilepsy. However, after her symptoms didn’t go away, the family sought a second opinion at St. Louis Children’s where it was discovered that Angelina had neuroblastoma. Her team of experts immediately developed a treatment plan involving advanced radiation technology that specifically targeted her tumors — the only one of its kind within 300 miles. Today, she continues to be an extraordinary teen with dreams and goals of her own while she stays strong in her fight. Her treatment would not be possible without the generous gifts from donors that directly funded this innovative radiation therapy.

Weston

At 7 months old, Weston was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and despite several different attempts to achieve remission while being treated in Kansas City, nothing seemed to work. That’s when a fellow mom and supporter of St. Louis Children’s heard about Weston’s story over Facebook and connected the family to a groundbreaking clinical trial — the first of its kind for kids — that was being conducted by our Washington University experts. The family traveled to St. Louis where Weston became the first pediatric patient ever to enroll in the trial. It was a huge success, and Weston is smiling now more than ever. Gifts to St. Louis Children’s made it possible for Weston and his family to access cutting-edge clinical trials.

Wyatt & Ryder

When identical twins Wyatt and Ryder were only 12 days old their parents took them to the pediatrician because they each skipped two feedings. While there, the pediatrician found them to have dangerously low body temperatures. They were rushed to St. Louis Children’s emergency room and placed in intensive care after experts found that both boys had severe heart infections. While advanced technology kept Wyatt and Ryder’s hearts beating, our medical team acted quickly and developed an innovative antiviral treatment plan based off of donor-funded research. Remarkably, the twins recovered within two weeks of treatment and are now happy and healthy 3-year-olds. Donations to St. Louis Children’s connected Wyatt and Ryder to world-class research and innovative technology that gave them a second chance.

Help Us Do What's Right For Kids Every day, donations to St. Louis Children’s give kids and their families access to scientific discoveries, innovative treatments and breakthrough care they can’t find anywhere else. Become a part of our mission to do what’s right for kids this holiday season.

aucy stir-fried noodles, bubbling Korean stews and cheesy chicken skillets number among the specialties at Pocha STL, a casual Korean eatery that opened in August in St. Ann. It comes from the family behind longstanding Korean barbecue restaurant Seoul Garden, now in Creve Coeur, and offers Asian street food and fusion fare for carryout via online ordering. Pocha STL occupies the original location of Seoul Garden, which closed earlier this year for renovations and retooling. Managing the family business – which Kyung and Dong Moon own – is their daughter, Joyce Moon. “We wanted to do something different for St. Louis with a fun and creative environment that could cater to a contemporary type of Korean food,” Joyce Moon says. “Pocha is short for ‘pojangmacha,’ which is a culture of outdoor tent pubs. We really want it to be a comfy place for

people to relax, have shots of [Korean alcoholic beverage] soju and enjoy staple pub and street snack types of foods.” The comfort food menu breaks down into categories such as noodles, fried rice, stews, rice bowls, the rice dish bibimbap, cheese skillets, the cutlet dish katsu, the rice-and-seaweed dish kimbap and snacks. Highlights include army stew with spicy broth, Spam, sausage, kimchi and ramen noodles. Another favorite, yaki udon (stir-fried noodles) comes with seafood, veggies, beef or chicken. A number of original recipes from Seoul Garden, such as spicy rice cakes, made it onto the Pocha STL menu alongside some modernized items. A cheese skillet, for instance, pairs Seoul Garden’s spicy chicken or pork with cheese sauce and rice. Asian fusion options include pork cheese fries and Japanese-style dishes, such as omurice (fried rice topped with egg and ketchup) and, as previously mentioned, katsu (panko-breaded,

deep-fried pork, fish or chicken served with rice and cabbage salad.) Traditional Korean street food options include braised pork trotters and chicken feet. “We’re hoping to create a space that’s uniquely Korean where all kinds of people can enjoy Asian food and culture,” Joyce Moon says.

READY READERS

WELCOMING WINTER By Sheila Oliveri

A

s winter draws near, Ready Readers recommends a counting book from writer/illustrator Denise Fleming to officially welcome the season. The First Day of Winter celebrates childhood and imagination, as a young boy builds a snowman in a woodland clearing. Using the cumulative concept and pacing of that classic English carol “The 12 Days of Christmas,” the snowman’s tale begins, “On the first day of winter my best friend gave to me – a red cap with a gold snap.” Over the course of 10 days, assorted animals watch as the snow pile morphs into an engaging frosty friend, gaining personality (and accessories) with each visit from the boy. Bright blue mittens, striped scarves, prickly pine cones, twigs, leaves, berries, buttons and pockets filled with birdseed are added, to the delight of the foraging forest denizens, but a truly magical ending awaits readers who follow along until the very end.

Fleming’s rhythmic text allows readers to “sing” the story, while her trademark handmade paper illustrations depict a snow globe sylvan tableau. She achieves deeply layered, but subtly hued, backgrounds where birds, deer, squirrels, mice, rabbits and other creatures appear at home. Within these subdued scenes, Fleming carefully places punches of color to form the snowman’s accessories. Brilliant blue mittens reach for the sky, vibrant orange berries provide a cheery smile, and a trio of rainbow-striped scarves encircle the snowman’s neck. The First Day of Winter might be requested and read again and again, combining the best elements of a seek-and-find experience and a story song, with a bit of enchantment thrown in for good measure.

mong it its ma manifold functions, art can impartt serenity se otherwise la lackingg in in life l at any given moment – sayy, am amid a global g pandemic – and in that manner, tandem m current c exhibitions at the Duane Reed Gal alller eryy may h hel elp p viewers recent enter er tth hem emssel elvves despite COVID-19 VID-19 trials t and tribulations. Thee lo Th longtime venue in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood opened d Ah Ahzad Bogosian’s “Sanctuary” and Jeffrey Vaughn’s “Quiet Beauty” on Halloween. Slightly less than three weeks remain for local art aficionados to appreciate thee two tw exhibitions, which close on Dec. 22 and which both feature art created in this figuratively and literally plagued year. Both “Sanctuary” and “Quiet Beauty ty” revel in chiaroscuro – basically, the use of contrasts (frequently bold ones) betw etween light and dark in a composition, often in servi vice of approxi ximating three-dimensionality ty. Bogosian’s works at the Reed generally involve distant landscapes, although the phrase skyscapes might better describe them: views of the heavens in multifarious spectral splendor, with earthly context minimalized. By way of example, the 24-inch-square Radiance, an acrylic-andoil canvas, exults in ginger, tangerine, marigold and other shades of orange, depicting both the sky ky at a dawn or dusk and its reflection in a body of water of some sort, thee two tw unevenly split by a thin, shadowy wy swath of land. Conversely, in the smaller of the gallery’s tw two exhibitions, Vaughn’s works tend to focus much more tightly on his subjects, which customarily hew to a botanical and often floral motif. For instance, A Rose at Sunset, an 18-inch-square oil painting on linen, showcases just such a flower – perhaps an ‘Amazing Grace’ varietal or a ‘World War II Memorial Rose’ – in exquisitely delicate pink and cream, with flushes of yellow and lilac, surrounded by blurry green and yellow stems and leaves. “Being a landscape painter with a decades-long career in observing and painting the Midwest and West, during the pandemic, [painting] became even more of a sanctuary for me,”

By Bryan a. hollerbach | Images courtesy of Duane Reed Gallery

Bogosian, who hails from St. Louis, relates of the genesis of the works in his exhibition. “Being outside in the air, away from people, not having to wear a mask and taking in all of the air/light and terrain allow me to move be beyond th the cu current st state of of th the wo world. My My wo work ha has al alwa wayys been about my emotional response to landscape, utilizing photos/ memory and sketches. “Most people and collectors of my work resonate with the serene and emotional qualities of my paintings, and during these stressful times, if I can take them away from that even briefly, I feel I have done my job as an artist.” As the inspiration for his own works, meanwhile, Alton native Vaughn cites one of the metro area’s most lapidary landmarks, now nearing 90. “A few years ago, I discovered the exquisite lily ponds for painting at the Jewel Box in Forest Park and decided to build the show on images of flowers in the St. Louis area,” he relates. “There are four water lily paintings based on these exquisite ponds. The largest painting in the show is an image of dogw ogwood blossoms above a rushing stream and boulders at Hawn State Park, near Farmington. The other four paintings are inspired by the myriad d of roses in the rose garden at Gordon F. Moore Park in Alton.” As noted, chiaroscuro effects abound in Vaughn’s exhibition: “Thee interplay of light, translucency and shadow on the flowers, water and d intimate landscape is a thread that runs through all the paintings. Typ ypically, the images are painted from photographs made to capturee the fleeting light from the sun low in the sky ky. Oil paint is blended directly onto the surface, which creates a subtle impasto. These abstract concerns of color, light and shadow are meant to convey thee quiet beauty of nature.” In that respect, in an era entrenched in the novel coronavirus, both Vaughn’s exhibition and Bogosian’s may well provide visitors to the Reed much-needed luminous relief.
