EDITOR’S NOTE
LAST MONTH, I ATTENDED MY FIRST-EVER EYE BALL, AN ANNUAL benefit for the Lifelong Vision Foundation. One of the evening’s honorees was College Bound, a local organization whose mission is to equip promising students in under-served neighborhoods with the skills they need to thrive in college. The Foundation partners with College Bound to provide students with some of the basics we take for granted, such as eye exams and glasses, to help improve their chances of success in school and beyond. Among those accepting the recognition on College Bound’s behalf was N’Dea Collins-Whitfield, a sophomore art history major at Webster University. N’Dea, who had gone without glasses for some time after misplacing her last pair, acquired a new set of glasses through the Foundation. She exclaimed how it “felt like a brand-new day” now that she can see the canvas better. Her hope is to establish an international children’s gallery one day. The partnership between these two organizations is a testament to the impact of teamwork with a goal of bettering the community, one St. Louisan at a time. Our coverage of The Eye Ball begins on p. 7.

Two local women just returned from Washington, where they joined more than 100 other volunteers from across the country to decorate the WHITE HOUSE for the holidays. KIM BRANNAN and her daughter, JENNY THOMASSON, co-owners of Stems Florist in Florissant, helped to transform the White House into ‘A Children’s Winter Wonderland.’ Thomasson’s team worked on the majestic Grand Foyer; while Brannan was part of the team responsible for decorating the East Colonnade and the East Hall. The duo and their fellow volunteers also attended a private White House reception hosted by FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA.
A Kirkwood man’s new children’s book. Lucky the Reindeer tells the story of Santa’s retiring lead reindeer, and how he chose Rudolph to take the reins and shine. Author TOM JOHNSTON says his inspiration comes from his infant son, Seamus, who passed away in April 2009 after seven weeks at the NICU at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. To help cope with the loss, Johnston spent hours in his home workshop and crafted from a 2x4-piece of wood a reindeer he named Lucky. Not long after, Johnston says he awoke in the middle of the night and felt compelled to write Lucky’s story. The book is available at select local outlets, including Pink Magnolia and Dandelion in Ladue. Johnston and his wife, Sharon, are now the parents of two sons, 4-year-old Mac and 18-month-old Grady.

Creating Community Ambassadors

IDST THE DEPOSIT slips and cashier drawers, banks are full of te l l e rs a n d m a n a g e rs, exe c u t ive s a n d board members—and at Reliance Bank, there even are ambassadors. Tom Brouster, chairman of the board and majority owner, refers to the members of the Reliance Bank advisory boards as “ambassadors for our bank— they are our eyes and ears in the community.” And this exclusive group of community members just got a little larger, as the bank recently formed its new Women’s Advisory Board. “The whole concept of bank advisory boards is not a new thing; banks have been using that concept successfully over lots of years,” says Brouster, who notes that the bank he previously owned had several advisory boards. “One of those was a women’s

advisory board—it was a concept that I came up with years ago, and the purpose was to reach out to women business leaders and community leaders that could help represent the bank from the standpoint of looking at our services…and we had great success with that concept.” Since Brouster started at Reliance Bank, three advisory boards have been formed. But why women? “It allows us to get a really focused discussion on women-owned business and what are the issues—and how can we be attentive,” explains Rick Sems, president and CEO of Reliance Bank. He notes that most start-ups are owned by men. “When women are 50 percent of the population or more, that’s a little out of whack.” Sems says he hopes this women’s organization can discuss similar problems to help find solutions for St. Louisans. The other two advisory boards (the City Region Board and Central Region Board) include both men and women.

Generations of Tradition From lighting menorahs and enjoying latkes to singing traditional songs and blessings, local families share with us how they celebrate Hanukkah.

together as a family and sing the prayer while we light them,” Stephanie says. Many of the menorahs are traditional metal, and others are colorful: One depicts the classic Noah’s Ark scene, and another features Israeli dancers. “There is one from Israel that my grandparents brought back when I was a kid, and another my husband grew up with that has drawers that open and close that the kids love.” The family’s Hanukkah celebrations focus on sharing time together, rather than gift-giving, Stephanie notes. “We don’t do a lot with gifts; we try not to emphasize that.”
THE COHN FAMILY Each night of Hanukkah, the Cohn family gathers around the front window of their home decorated with handmade snowflakes, dreidels and menorahs to celebrate. “We light our big menorah together, then each of the kids picks which color and style of menorah they want, says a prayer, and lights their own menorah,” explains Creighton Cohn. “Having them in the window is a tradition, so the rest of the world can see them burning.” Creighton and his wife, Plia, and their kids, Leetal (11), Matan (9) and Orly (5), whose Hebrew names mean ‘my morning dew,’ ‘gift’ and ‘my light,’ respectively, also join fellow members at Congregation B’nai Amoona for Hanukkah dinner, complete with latkes, and family game night, including dreidel. The kids also enjoy craft time, where they make Hanukkah gifts for their family. Teaching their kids the importance of charity is another aspect of the holiday, Plia notes. “We gather presents and take them to Carver House,” Creighton says. “And we take the kids to a toy store, fill up a cart with toys and donate them to Toys for Tots or Hanukkah Hugs.”
THE KURTZMAN/LEVY FAMILY The Kurtzman/Levy family celebrates the Festival of Lights at home and at their local temple, Central Reform Congregation. “For First Night First Light, latkes are served, there is music and everyone brings their own menorah,” Stephanie Kurtzman says. “It’s beautiful because so many menorahs are lit.” At home, the tradition continues. Stephanie and her husband, David, and their kids, 7-yearold Lathan and 2-year-old twins, Ansel and Hanya, light 10 menorahs. “We light them
THE MALTER FAMILY For the Malters, Hanukkah is a time for family and friends—whether they practice Judaism or another religion. “It’s all about time with family. And we have friends over who aren’t Jewish to share in the traditions,” explains Steve Malter. Steve and his wife, Felicia, and daughters, Sarah (10), and Emma (7), annually attend a family Hanukkah party, where they play dreidel, enjoy traditional food, and share experiences. The celebration continues at their temple, the United Hebrew Congregation, where they enjoy a Hanukkah dinner before the Sabbath service. “Our girls also participate in the children’s choir and do a lot of Hanukkah performances,” Steve adds. Back at home, the Malters cap off each night of Hanukkah with a traditional menorah lighting. “The girls take turns lighting the candles, and we all do the blessings together,” Steve says. “The last night, we teach the kids about giving to charity and the importance of helping others.”

WINTER WONDERLAND
Hot for Chocolate
BY BLAISE HART-SCHMIDT
As a kid, hot chocolate meant mixing a paper package filled with questionable brown powder and morsel-sized marshmallows with a mug of water, hot from the microwave. But times have changed, and it’s time to graduate to a more sophisticated—but not much more difficult—recipe. Here, local restaurateurs share their secrets to making a cup of rich, delicious hot chocolate, available in both kid- and adult-friendly form. BISSINGER’S HANDCRAFTED CHOCOLATIER Dave Owens, Bissinger’s chief chocolatier and VP of taste, says that “once people taste Bissinger’s chocolate, they’re customers for life.” It makes sense, then, that his hot chocolate recipe is simple, versatile and “all about the chocolate,” though Owens suggests topping with a big marshmallow, dusting of cocoa or even some chili powder to add a Mexican twist.
Dulce de Leche Hot Chocolate Yields approximately 2 servings • 1 Bissinger’s dulche de leche chocolate bar • 1 c whole milk • Marshmallows, cocoa or chili powder (optional) Heat milk on the stove or in the microwave, and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat. Break the chocolate bars into squares and place in the milk. Whisk until incorporated. Pour into mugs and top with marshmallow, cocoa or chili powder, as desired.
GIOVANNI’S KITCHEN Guests can choose from several hot chocolate drinks at Giovanni’s Kitchen, says director of operations Warren Rapp, including Big Hug, Cappucino Sausalito and Alhambra Royale. He suggests serving the drinks after dinner, or anytime you’re cold after coming in from outside.
Big Hug: • 1 1/4 oz. Bailey’s Irish cream • 1/2 oz. dark crème de cacao • Hot chocolate
Add the Bailey’s Irish cream and dark crème de cacao to your hot chocolate of choice, and enjoy. CYRANO’S At a restaurant known for its desserts, Cyrano’s hot chocolate doesn’t disappoint. GM Melissa Downs says the recipe’s high-quality chocolate and whole milk set the drink apart from others. The restaurant also makes its own whipped cream, using heavy cream and Torani vanilla syrup.
Bissinger’s Dulche de Leche Hot Chocolate
Hot Chocolate: • 2 oz. Ghirardelli chocolate syrup • 1 oz. Torani vanilla syrup • 10 oz. whole milk
Steam the milk, and add the chocolate and vanilla. Top with whipped cream and chocolate powder.

The Fountain on Locust’s Magnum Opus Hot Chocolate
Continued from page 33 The Fountain on Locust The Fountain on Locust is known for its rich, boozy, chocolate drinks, and the hot chocolate is a popular item on the menu. Owner Joy Christensen says high-fructose corn syrup isn’t allowed in her kitchen, and the liquid chocolate in this recipe is no exception. The combination of milk and half-and-half mix to create the perfect viscosity, she says, for a drink you can enjoy long after the first few sips. And don’t forget The Fountain on Locust’s signature abundance of toppings.

HOLIDAY STRESS
Take Care of Yourself BY CONNIE MITCHELL
I
t’s the most wonderful time of the year, CROONS the golden voice of the late Andy Williams on radios and store sound systems every holiday season. Yet you may feel more like writing your own song: It’s the most crazy, busy, stressful time of the year. Between parties, children’s activities, religious observances, gifts, baking, cards, etc., the holidays can become an exhausting, stressful marathon. The results can take a toll on our relationships, emotional well-being and physical health. “When we are stressed, our body releases stress hormones called adrenaline and cortisol, which help our body to be more alert, tight and react to ‘fight or flight’ situations,” says Jessica Kershenski, a Mercy Clinic individual and family therapist. “In small quantities, these hormones can be fine; but if they’re released on a chronic basis, they can create significant problems, such as anxiety, depression, heart disease and sleep problems, among others.” Reducing stress is one of the pillars of overall preventive health care cited by many medical experts, along with regular exercise, eating a
balanced diet, getting adequate rest and not smoking. It’s important to work toward a healthy lifestyle throughout the year, and not allow the holidays to throw you off track, adds Laurie Chappell, education coordinator and certified holistic stress management instructor at St. Luke’s Hospital. “The two most powerful tools I share with patients are relaxation breathing and meditation,” she says. “I encourage everyone to do both daily.” Meditation can be practiced in group or individual settings. Achieving a meditative state is possible through a variety of techniques, including guided meditation audio recordings, podcasts and apps. Relaxation breathing is a simple practice that involves breathing deep into the diaphragm so that the belly rises with each inhale and falls with each slow, complete exhale. The use of breath work is another common form of meditative practice, involving the breath as a focal point to help calm the mind and body. Reducing holiday stress also involves taking practical steps to help control seasonal chaos. Kershenski and Chappell recommend several tips
Q:
I had an attack of diverticulitis. Do I have to avoid seeds and nuts now, and will I need surgery?
Diverticulosis is a condition in which pouches or “diverticula” form on colon. It is the result of a diet high in beef, fat and processed foods and low in fiber. The incidence of diverticulosis increases with age. By 80 years of age, 80% of the U.S. population will have developed diverticula. Only 25% of those patients will ever develop a complication of diverticulosis, however, which includes bleeding and diverticulitis.

for taking charge of the holidays instead of letting them take charge of you: • Stick to a budget. “We’ll feel much better about ourselves and our pocketbook after the holidays if we do, and this helps reduce post-holiday stress, as well,” Kershenski says. • Learn to say no and don’t over-schedule. Becoming overcommitted is a common holiday pitfall. “People respect us more in the long run,
Diverticulitis occurs when a diverticula perforates, creating inflammation around the colon. Usually this is a pinpoint hole that the body quickly seals, but the resulting inflammation causes pain in the left lower abdomen that may be associated with fever, nausea, vomiting and constipation. Diverticulitis is diagnosed with a CT scan, which can also help to identify complications such as a fistula (abnormal connection) between the colon and the bladder or vagina. Diverticulitis is usually treated with bowel rest and antibiotics. Hospitalization may be required if there is severe inflammation or one of the above complications. Following a diverticulitis attack, a colonoscopy is needed to assess the colon and rule out other potential causes,
and a high fiber diet should be started. There is no data to support that seeds and nuts cause diverticulitis. After the initial attack, the risk of having another is only about 9%. After a second attack, however, the risk of subsequent bouts increases with each attack so that after the third or fourth, the risk of a fifth occurrence is around 50%. Typically, the first attack is the worst and carries the highest risk of a perforation, which may require an emergency surgery and possible colostomy. Surgery is usually indicated for patients who have had three or more attacks, persistent symptoms after an attack or have a fistula. Surgery entails removing the left side of the colon and reconnecting the colon to the rectum. This can usually be performed laparoscopically. After surgery, the risk of having another bout of diverticulitis is less than 5%. If you experience diverticulitis, a board-certified colorectal surgeon can work with you to determine the best treatment plan.

MEDITATION
Slow & Steady
B
REATHE IN. AND OUT. FOCUS ON THE breath entering and leaving your body... again…This is all it takes to begin a basic meditation practice. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath. This simple practice, used for centuries in many cultures, is one of the best tools we have to mitigate the stress of modern life. By investing just a few minutes a day, we can help calm the mind and body, producing positive physiological and psychological results. “Meditation, like other activities, produces measurable effects on the body, such as slowing of the respiratory rate and lowering of blood pressure. It changes patterns of electrical activity in the brain. With newer imaging techniques, such as PET scanning, some researchers have found sustained changes in the way the brain processes information among those who meditate regularly,” says Dr. William Holcomb, a medical doctor and lay meditation teacher at the Shinzo Zen Meditation Center who has been practicing meditation for about 25 years. “Anyone can notice (meditation’s) benefits after any amount of time or duration,” says Rev. Rosan Osamu Yoshida, abbot of the Missouri Zen Center. “Physical, physiological and psychological calmness and clearness—with their solid, still sitting— is like the settling of a bowl of water: stilling its water without turbulence and turbidity, without emotions, volitions and conceptions.” The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine includes meditation among its list of ‘mind-body practices.’ While meditation seems to affect the nervous system and has been used as a complementary treatment for reducing stress, anxiety, depression, pain, hypertension and insomnia, the center states while it is not fully known what changes occur in the body during meditation, reesearch is underway to find out more about its effects, how it works, and diseases and conditions for which it may be most helpful. Beyond physical benefits, meditation can help maintain a positive state of mental and emotional health, says Madhur Garg, city coordinator for Sahaja Meditation St. Louis chapter. “At the mental level, main benefits include stress relief, as well as
AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION courtesy of Dr. William Holcomb • First, quit trying to quiet the mind. Generating thoughts is what the mind does. • Find a private place to sit. Assume a comfortable posture with your spine upright, not rigid and tense, but sitting straight, toward the back of the chair if you’re in a chair. Your feet are flat on the floor. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Relax your shoulders and balance your head so it’s not jutting forward or tilting back, just

increased resistance to stress. The other benefit is better concentration levels that make us more efficient,” Garg says. “At the emotional level, it helps us be more in balance, remain in the present, and be more patient and empathetic, which helps us in improving our relations with friends and family.” A variety of meditation practices exist and differ slightly in their approach to achieving a meditative state. Some involve guided visualization or the use of a repeated word or phrase (mantra) as a focal point. Some physical practices, such as tai chi, qigong and yoga, include a meditative aspect. Some meditation practices involve just a few minutes each day, while others require longer periods, even hours at a time. “Transcendental meditation (TM) is practiced for 20 minutes twice a day,” says TM instructor Michael Blitz. “After practicing, one often feels refreshed, alert, like the ‘reset’ button got pushed. The research shows that during TM, the body goes into a unique state of restful alertness, a ‘wakeful hypo-metabolic state,’ where the body is in a deep state of rest and the mind shows the brain-wave patterns of being awake.” He stresses that he speaks

Find a comfortable position for your hands, in your lap or on your thighs. • Now, take a couple of deep breaths and then breathe naturally, noticing the actual sensation of breathing, and the rise and fall of your belly with each breath. only about TM, which is unique in how it is taught. “There is a paradox about meditation practice—the harder you look for results and the more impatient you are to see progress, the less likely you will find them,” Holcomb says. “It’s like any other skill, like learning to play piano or violin. At first, you have to have to have some faith and just commit to giving it a try. Slowly, things begin to change. You may hardly notice it happening. Maybe co-workers or family members will notice it before you do. You might not get so irritated when little things go wrong, or you might lose your interest in arguing. You might find you’re more patient and more tolerant of sitting in silence—and you may even enjoy just sitting in silence. But give it a couple months, at least. return attention to the breath. • This may happen a hundred times. That’s OK. Sometimes the mind will start to quiet on its own. It doesn’t matter—just keep working with it. • You’re practicing letting go of thoughts, learning that you don’t have to believe everything you think. You start to become familiar with how the mind works and are not so quick to react in habitual patterns. Whatever state the mind may be in that day, notice it and come back to the breath.

DIXIE
& the Engler Family By Lisa Watson
O
NCE UPON A TIME...The animal control department of Peoria, Illinois, found Dixie, a 4-year-old basset hound, on the streets with a litter of puppies. They took her in, but during the procedure to have her spayed, something went wrong and she became very ill. Someone called Guardian Angel Basset Rescue, who took her in, continued nursing her back to heath, and placed her in a foster home. Meanwhile, Ted and Mary Beth Engler of Olivette were looking for a dog to be a companion to their 10-year-old basset, Lolly. The Englers had owned bassets for 20 years, and Lolly had never been without a friend until their other dog passed away in 2012. They had known about Guardian Angel Basset Rescue for many years, having attended multiple events put on by the group’s St. Louis branch. “We do a lot with them—in the summer, we go to the Boathouse in Forest Park, and we (just recently attended) pictures with Santa Claus at the Dog Museum. Bassets are pack dogs and they love being with other bassets,” Mary Beth Engler says. So, shortly after the Englers put in an application for an adult basset, they got the call that Dixie was available. She was in foster care in Rockford, Illinois, and the Englers made the four-hour trip with

LN PETS Lolly to see if it was a good fit. “We just fell in love,” Engler says. “She jumped right in our car and was ready to leave! She sat in my lap the whole way—she was about 30 pounds and very thin, and she is still on a regimen of drugs. But when we got home, she sat in front of the fireplace and that became her spot.” However, something was off, as Engler soon noticed. “She started blinking at me. I said to Ted, I think there’s something wrong with her eyes. So we took her to Animal Clinic of Clayton.” They found out she had inverted eyelashes, meaning her eyelashes were growing in toward her eyes. The doctor recommended laser surgery because the condition put Dixie at risk for scratching her cornea. “It worked beautifully,” Engler says. “She had a cone for awhile, which is bad for a basset because with their short legs, they get stuck on doorways and rugs, but Dr. Fraser did a great job.” After that, Dixie fit in perfectly with their home—she loves Lolly, grooming her face constantly—and she already knew basic commands. Plus, her energy level certainly keeps things interesting, Engler says. “She’s a burst of energy, and then she’ll just die in your lap. The second day we had her, my husband found her sitting on the bathroom sink, eating soap. I don’t know how she jumped up there—she must have some cat in her!” Another time, Engler looked out her kitchen window, only to see Dixie staring right back at her: The dog had jumped onto the deck railing and balanced there to look inside. But in quieter moments, “she looks up at you with those sad eyes and cuddles up with you watching TV,” Engler says. For the Englers, it truly was a fairy-tale ending. “They add to your life,” Engler says of her pets. “I never had a dog growing up, but when we couldn’t have children, my husband brought home a basset hound puppy for my birthday. That was the beginning in 1991, and we haven’t looked back. Bassets are so silly looking, that when you see one, you can’t help but smile.” FOR YOUR OWN FAIRY-TAIL ENDING... PET TALK
Keep Them Warm BY DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF
A
FTER LAST WINTER, WE ALL ARE ASSUMing another bad one is on the way. There are many concerns for our dogs who have an inordinate amount of outside exposure. Obviously, there are breeds that are kenneled and spend a good part of the year outdoors. Those pets will transition to the weather extremes of winter more efficiently and safely. Nonetheless, housing is critical: Emphasize insulation from direct cold/winds and moisture, as with rainy and icy episodes. The absolute cold is bad, but not as concerning as the wind and moisture exposure. Many people find a suitable floor substrate, like fresh hay, but adding a dense rubber mat below, or even heating support that can be accessed through a Grainger catalog or through your veterinarian, can prove very useful. Don’t forget to provide access to fresh, non-frozen water sourcing daily. Other useful measures include increasing your pet’s food consumption, again, under the guidance of your veterinarian. Trimming the hair between toes also is very useful, as ice buildup can create problems like localized frostbite. Ear tips need to be monitored for excessive frost exposure, as well. The management actions discussed above are for pets that are obligated to outdoors or semi-outdoors kenneling. Garages or basements can prove useful for these animals, as well. Just be sure to secure common chemicals that can be toxic, like lawn fertilizers, antifreeze and more. For those animals that normally stay inside, many of the concerns listed are even more exaggerated, as these critters are even more vulnerable to extended times outside in harsh conditions. Folks sometimes forget that Fido or Fritz is lingering outside. Please don’t make that mistake. Every year, veterinary emergency clinics describe cats that climb into the car engine region, attempting to keep warm. Sadly, owners have no idea of their presence, and the result can be devastating. Enjoy winter, but maintain close attention to your pets’ needs. If weather is excessive, react appropriately; and when possible, try to always keep your pets inside through the worst of winter days and nights.

English paint-maker Farrow & Ball’s gorgeous Rectory Red No. 217, best described as vermillion with a touch of black. With color as rich as this, there’s no need to go overboard. DESIGN BY NANCY ROBINSON Help Stamp Out Hunger During the Holidays St. Louis glass artist Chris McCarthy, owner of Park Avenue Glass, has created a patch of blown glass pumpkins and colorful ornaments to benefit the St. Louis Area Foodbank through the Whole Foods Market Feed4More initiative. McCarthy will sell his blown glass artwork at the Whole Foods Market in Town & Country Dec. 12 to 14, and Dec. 19 to 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. A portion of all proceeds will benefit the St. Louis Area Foodbank. “‘Give local, buy local’ is our family motto,” McCarthy says. “As an artist and small business owner, it’s important to me and my family to give back to the community both creatively and financially. Partnering with Whole Foods Market and the St. Louis Area Foodbank will help do both by positively impacting hunger in St. Louis, while bringing local art into St. Louis homes.” McCarthy’s designs reveal a complex mix of both the hot and cold side of the blown-glass medium. Fascinated with the ability of fire to create form, he sculpts each piece with the qualities of light and diffraction in mind, using the Venetian techniques of Murrini, Incalmo and Battuto that imbue simple, elegant forms with depth and complexity. McCarthy’s work can be seen at art fairs, galleries and private homes across the country and internationally.

The Ritz-Carlton Ballroom’s Grand Makeover One of the most desirable venues in the city for beautiful and memorable weddings and large society events is The Ritz-Carlton’s famous ballroom. This summer’s floor-to-ceiling redo was inspired by St. Louis’ rhythm and blues heritage, in keeping with the previously redesigned hotel lobby. The ballroom, adjacent pre-function room and grand hall are now swathed in contemporary hues of blue, ivory and cream. New wall coverings in the ballroom are decorated with hand-cut patterns of blooming local flowers, and complemented by freshly painted surfaces in shades of sand and oyster. The ballroom floor also is outfitted with plush new carpets inspired by antique rugs; while overhead, massive cut-crystal chandeliers grace the room’s 16-foot ceilings, heightening the dramatic impact of the 12,750-square-foot room. The grand hall leading to the ballroom also lives up to its name, outfitted with rich, royal blue fabric-covered walls. Also new

Inside the World of Designer Barry Dixon
Keeping an eye to proportion and scale, finding new, unused materials and finishes, focusing on the general usability of each new design...and avoiding clichés.
“The greatest quality a home might possess is that of innate, soulful hospitality,” says Virginiabased interior designer Barry Dixon, whose distinct aesthetic blends the warmth of classic Southern design with global influences from a childhood spent abroad in India, Pakistan, Korea, New Caledonia and South Africa. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Dixon also is a prolific product designer (furniture, fabric, lighting, accessories and even a paint line) as well as the author of two interior design books. Barry Dixon Interiors, his first book, published in September 2008, is now in its third printing. His latest, Barry Dixon Inspirations, is available now in bookstores and online at Amazon. We recently caught up with him in High Point, N.C., where he was unveiling his third and newest home décor collection for Arteriors Home.
What was the inspiration for your newest collection of accent furniture, lighting and accessories? The genesis of my first two collaborations with Arteriors was my personally curated collection of antiques and objects, my private 21st-century curiosities shop. Items selected due to my peculiar

history—strong Southern roots steeped in warm, familial memories of early childhood, tempered with an adolescence spent abroad, hopping from continent to continent with my wildly nomadic family. The heart and soul of this third collection are permutations of favorite pieces launched in collections one and two—gilding a piece to make it more formal, more glamorous, or playing with dimension and purpose of a piece in response to customer requests. Most exciting for me are the completely new designs—the Willow chair, Grotto table and Boiserie bench. What are the biggest challenges when designing collections like this?
If you weren’t a designer, what would you want to do? I think I’d love to teach. What is your idea of real-life, everyday luxury? Time is the greatest luxury...and space, space, space. Family, friends and pets aside, what things would you not want to have to live without? Books, memories, good French soap and hot water, and my cutting garden. What’s on your favorite playlist right now? Not surprisingly, an exotically eclectic list— Gershwin & Cole Porter classics via Fred Astaire and Ella Fitzgerald, Adele, Depeche Mode, Carly Simon...and Gregorian chants.
BARRY DIXON PHOTO BY TONY POWELL
Your interiors are grounded in classic design, but definitely exhibit modern, even whimsical touches. Do you aim for the same with your product designs? Yes…the only way to achieve timelessness in any design is to keep an eye on both what has been and what could be, defying mere ‘reproduction.’ Pieces that have never existed quite this way will resist categorization on the history’s calendar... they are timeless.
You have a number of interesting new lighting pieces in this collection. What do you love/hate when it comes to lighting in interiors? Do you have pet peeves? For me, the worst and most common mistake is over-lighting, especially in a residential setting. My pet peeve is Swiss-cheese ceilings with too many recessed lights. And there should be no lighting, no switching system, in any modern home that doesn’t provide an easy-to-use dimming method. I love the moody, sensual appeal of ambient light.
Quality shouldn’t be an option

PROFILE By Blaise Hart-Schmidt
Kevin Hurley Buying the perfect home is all about location. And finding the perfect realtor is, often, all about experience. Janet McAfee Real Estate agent Kevin Hurley has plenty of experience, having entered the industry more than 30 years ago. He got the idea from his then-neighbor and now-business partner, Jim Human, and joined Edward L. Bakewell. Eventually, Hurley teamed up with Human, before the company merged with Janet McAfee Real Estate five years ago. Combined, the team has 89 years in real estate. Both agents lived in the Central West End for several decades, helping them understand how to market historic homes in the area. Service and guidance set the Human-Hurley
team apart from others, Hurley says, and clients appreciate the fact that the team is available around the clock. “We have a personal touch, he says. “We get to know our clients, and work with them and communicate with them on the phone or in-person, not just through email. That’s how you develop good relationships. Many of the team’s clients are repeat customers, people whom Hurley and Human have helped buy and sell several homes. The team is able to draw from their extensive amount of experience in the industry when guiding clients through home-buying and -selling. “We go that extra mile, Hurley says. “We stick with our clients through the entire process, from listing their property to going through the ups and downs of selling the property, through closing.

Even more charming without the lines and crowds of summer, Newport’s mansions are at their Gilded Age best, with live holiday music, gingerbread mansion contests, tables set with period silver and china, candlelit windows, dozens of decorated Christmas tress, thousands of pointsettias, fresh flowers and evergreens. And, in The Breakers, there’s a 15-foot-tall pointsettia tree and a working garden scale model train of the New York Central Railroad, source of the Vanderbilt family fortune. Completed in 1895 for Cornelius Vanderbilt II,

TRAVEL The Breakers is a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo. With rich marbles, a 50-foot-high Great Hall and sweeping ocean views, the term ‘over the top’ could have been penned for this colossus. Down the road on Bellevue Avenue (no chance of keeping up with the Joneses on this street!) is The Elms, built as a summer residence in 1901 for Philadelphia coal magnate Edward J. Berwind and his wife. With its priceless 18th-century Venetian paintings and Chinese lacquer panels, it is considered by many to be the loveliest of all the Newport mansions. Not to be missed is the sumptuous sunken garden of its 10-acre park. Nearby is Marble House, the summer home of William K. Vanderbilt and his wife, Alva. At a cost of $11 million dollars ($260 million in today’s dollars), it was the most lavish house in America when it opened in 1892. Born into a wealthy family in Mobile, Alabama, Alva was precocious from birth; and upon marriage to a Vanderbilt, with indefatigable drive, she climbed the social ladder to achieve the epitome of social and political power. At a time when divorce was unheard of, Alva divorced her Vanderbilt philanderer and plunged herself and her fortune into philanthropy and the Votes for Women campaign, all the while dressing in the corsets, bustles, petticoats and endless layers of the fashion of the times. The term ‘Gilded Age’ was coined by Mark Twain in 1873, and was meant as a mockery, not a compliment. Lasting from about 1870 to 1893, it was a period of time characterized by a greatly expanding economy, and growth of industry and wealth in the country, supported by excesses, materialism and political corruption, all achieved with no government regulation. Gold was everywhere, much of it

gilded iron painted over with gold paint to look real. Quite real and reliable in every way is The Chanler at Cliff Walk, one of the most historic mansions in Newport. Built in 1873 by John Winthrop Chanler, a New York congressman, it is now an exquisite European-style boutique hotel situated on the ocean with breathtaking views. Guest rooms and suites are sumptuously appointed in varying individual styles, and have entertained visitors
from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to President Theodore Roosevelt in grand Gilded Age manner. You’ll love its charming Spiced Pear restaurant. Other dining choices in Newport include The White Horse Tavern, Bouchard, The Muse in the grandiose Vanderbilt Grace Hotel and The Black Pearl. More on the nautical, tennis, polo, beachy side of Newport at a later date. For now, it’s Merry Christmas!

S THE END OF 2014 approaches, we have a chance amid hectic holiday preparation to reflect on the past year. What did we accomplish? What do we still hope to get done? What was on our minds? To answer the last question, I turned to our old friend, Google. If people were thinking about it, people were googling it. These are the top 10 topics people were searching for in 2014. 10. JENNIFER ANISTON Coming in 10th, the Friends icon apparently is still on people’s minds. Is she pregnant (because in Hollywood, fertility begins at 40)? Did she secretly marry perennial fiancé Justin Theroux? Fifteen years and a string of B- movies later, she still has people talking. Good for you, Jen.
Debbie Baldwin
TANGENTIAL THINKER
managed a whirlwind romance and a multi-milliondollar salary negotiation. Google away, girls.
9. iPHONE 6 The hamster wheel that is Apple continues to turn.
4. JENNIFER LAWRENCE Coming in fourth is the wildly talented star of The Hunger Games franchise and untapped vocal talent. Her rendition of a folk song from Mockingjay has been remixed and currently is topping another list: iTunes. Here’s hoping she has the good sense not to record an album.
8. MILEY CYRUS Our little Miley is at a respectable eighth on the list this year. Roll your eyes, if you must, but I think this is a small victory. She didn’t twerk—or break an engagement. She wasn’t the center of a storm of controversy. Wait. Is it possible she made the list on her talent?
3. ARIANA GRANDE Move over, Celine and Mariah. There’s a new girl in town. The diminutive diva reportedly forces fans to delete selfies she doesn’t like, and threatened to cancel a performance because her hair wasn’t right. Her name may sound like a font on a Word document, but girlfriend can sing.
7. FROZEN Apparently, we can’t Let It Go. Disney’s billiondollar baby continues to steal hearts—and wallets.
2. MINECRAFT So, 30-somethings living on futons in their parents’ basements google a lot. No surprise there. The addictive video game was the second-mostgoogled topic this year.
6. KIM KARDASHIAN Stifle your gag reflex and take comfort in the fact that sixth on this list is viewed as abject failure in the Kardashian empire. They have, no doubt, ordered a hit on the three women that precede her on the list. 5. KALEY CUOCO The unassuming star of The Big Bang Theory
1. EBOLA And coming in at No. 1...It makes sense, really. Ebola affected pop culture, politics, the economy and, of course, health care. It continues to be a cause for concern. Probably the only way to increase web traffic on the subject would be for Kim Kardashian to catch it. Well, here’s hoping...

Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash BY MARK BRETZ
THE STORY J.R. ‘Johnny’ Cash was born in Arkansas in 1932. His impoverished childhood was grounded by a hard-working, God-fearing family, values that shaped his own philosophy. Cash was known as ‘The Man in Black,’ a color that he said he wore to identify with the poor, the downtrodden, the imprisoned, those on the outside of life looking in at the Great American Dream.
INDIE AT A GLANCE

O
SCAR SEASON IS UPON US, AND THE INDIE THEATERS are packed with potential nominees. If you’re keeping a checklist handy, here’s the current indie recap: St. Vincent Absolutely worth seeing, not only for Bill Murray’s endearing performance, but the charming story and colorful cast that includes Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts. It’s an 8. The Theory of Everything Eddie Redmayne’s brilliant portrayal of Stephen Hawking is almost enough to redeem this surprisingly uncomplicated and decidedly unromantic story—almost. It’s a 6. Birdman Another must-see, Michael Keaton is compelling in this somewhat-autobiographical role of an action hero who has fallen into obscurity. The real star is Edward Norton as a selfinvolved actor in love with personal drama. The movie is a fascinating, if slightly pretentious, exploration. It’s an 8. The Homesman The film (dubbed a feminist Western), stars Hilary Swank, in yet another portrayal of the female iconoclast, and Tommy Lee Jones, who also directs. Though beautifully acted, with an incredible cast, the film often seems more a study in gender identity than a compelling story. It’s a 6. Rosewater Daily Show host Jon Stewart steps behind this camera to capture the true story of the months-long detention of IranianCanadian journalist Maziar Bahari. It’s an interesting look at the necessity and plight of the free press. It’s a 6. Whiplash Indie favorite Miles Teller stars as a gifted drummer at an elite music school who is tormented by a draconian instructor played by J.K. Simmons. The movie is engaging, despite the fact that the premise seems far-fetched. It’s a 7.
Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash was conceived by William Meade and created by Richard Maltby Jr. as a musical tribute to Cash and his way of life that epitomized the aspirations and struggles of so many of his fellow Americans in the 20th century.
HIGHLIGHTS Maltby’s show is essentially presented in linear fashion, taking the audience from Cash’s birth during the Great Depression to his death in 2003. The original Broadway production fared poorly back in 2006, so Maltby and Jason Edwards, who directs and stars in this presentation, retooled it to make it more accessible. It’s told by four performers surrounded by half a dozen accomplished musicians, folks who assuredly know their way around a country, bluegrass or folk tune, and spend two hours proving it distinctly on their instruments and with their voices. All four principals prove up to the task of portraying either Cash or his long-time love and collaborator, June Carter Cash, as young and mature duos, respectively. Of particular note is Derek Keeling, whose deep voice bears a remarkable resemblance to Cash’s familiar strains. While Keeling is successful recreating the youthful Cash’s free-spirited approach, Edwards brings a more sober, reflective side to Cash in his later years.
RATING: A 4 on a scale of 1-to-5. COMPANY: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis VENUE: Browning Mainstage, Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road DATES: Through Dec. 28 TICKETS: $21-$76; 968-4925 or repstl.org More reviews available at laduenews.com
Trenna Barnes delights as a youthfully exuberant June Carter, having great fun on the amusing bit, Flushed from the Bathroom of My Heart, performed at the Grand Ole Opry where she and Cash first met. Allison Briner is a resounding success as the older June, delightfully joining Edwards on the rousing, rocking tune, Jackson, as well as on I Walk the Line. Ring of Fire doesn’t measure up to the high level of Jersey Boys or even another Maltby musical effort, Ain’t Misbehavin’. It is, however, plenty of fun in its own right, a fine piece of Americana and a ripping good way to celebrate the holidays.

DINING OUT
spicybits BY MATT SORRELL
Just because there’s a chill in the air doesn’t mean you can’t still get out and support local purveyors. The Schlafly Farmers Market at The Bottleworks in Maplewood is moving indoors for the winter months for all of your local shopping needs. Shop from 8:30 a.m. until noon on the following Saturdays: Dec. 20; Jan. 24; Feb. 28; and March 28. More info is available at schlaflyfarmersmarket.com.
Once again, the culinary team at River City Casino & Hotel has constructed a giant gingerbread house, and they’re giving guests the opportunity to dine inside it, with proceeds going to support the Center for Hearing & Speech. This year, Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles will join the effort, as well, by building an even bigger house, large enough for six adults to dine inside comfortably. The Not So Silent Night gingerbread houses will be open for seating from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. until Dec. 24 at both locations. The fully tax-deductible $25 reservation donation can be made by calling Ameristar at 636-940-4454 or River City at 388-7625. Each house will feature a special holiday menu that includes soup or salad, a main course and dessert for only $20 per person. Diners also can order from restaurant menus for breakfast, lunch or dinner. To give an idea of the scope of these edible abodes, River City used 600 pounds of gingerbread and 170 pounds of powdered sugar for icing, among other ingredients.

Frazer’s Restaurant & Lounge
A Southside Staple BY SIDNEY LEWIS
SITUATED ALMOST IN THE SHADOW OF THE Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Frazer’s Restaurant & Lounge has been a southside staple for 20-some years. After a lengthy absence, we recently headed back and found that this old favorite continues to impress. The bar program at Frazer’s has evolved enormously since our last visit. We’ve been told that some of the bar staff from the recently shuttered Tripel in Lafayette Square have been hired on, which would account for the significant improvement in the restaurant’s cocktail offerings. The drinks list now has a tasty variety of classics and original creations. Two of our favorites: the How Dare You ($10), a dark and herbal mix of rye whiskey, Green Chartreuse, St. Germain, orange flower water and lemon zest; and the Witches Elixir ($10), a tasty tipple based on chamomile-infused gin with strega, honey, lemon, both lemon and aromatic bitters and merengue. Top-notch libations in hand, we turned to the food menu, which continues to feature creative cuisine that touches on a wide variety of culinary traditions. We kicked things off with a cup of the Soup of The Day ($4), a rich split pea and ham. This cold-weather warm-up was followed up with the Zucchini Rolls ($6) and the Avocado Salad ($9). The rolls are tender grilled slices of squash stuffed with feta cheese and herbs, which makes for a flavorful Mediterranean-style nosh. The salad is (naturally) centered around the avocado, which is accented with celery, red onion, tomato and some pecans for textural contrast and dressed with a cumin seed vinaigrette. Some avocado salads can seem
somewhat bland when they depend too heavily on the mild avocado for flavor, but this combo of ingredients serves to bring out the richness of the fruit, while also providing a panoply of flavor notes. Frazer’s Steak Burger ($11) is a fine addition to the crowded burger scene in St. Louis. It’s made with meat ground in-house and placed between two house-made buns, then topped with cheddar cheese and some sweet sauteed onions. All killer, no filler, indeed. We got ours with a side of fries though mashed potatoes also are available. If a dish has the owner’s name on it, it must be good, right? The Salmon Frazer ($21), proves this theory. It’s a rosy 8-ounce filet that’s crusted with a horseradish and pecan/breadcrumb topping, then baked and served over a dijon mustard cream sauce. The mild heat of the horseradish and the tanginess of mustard really accents the flaky fish. The dish is served with a side of red beans and rice which, though thematically confusing, is nonetheless delicious. To cap things off: a scoop of Lemon Verbena Cantaloupe Sorbet ($2). This delicate, nuanced sorbet provided a light and subtle end to our Frazer’s experience. The Frazer’s interior remains colorful, eccentric and supremely comfortable, with its abundance of rich colors and interesting textures. It’s an altogether comfortable and inviting space in which to enjoy some fine food and drink. The stone floor in the bar area alone is worth the trip! 1811 Pestalozzi St., 773-8646, frazergoodeats.com

Craft beer brewer Excel Brewing Company has introduced another seasonal ale for the holidays: Winter Warmer. The introduction is part of the first phase of Excel’s plans for additional distribution in the St. Louis area. We’re told it’s a blend of malty English Style Old Ale with notes of mocha, honey, toffee, hazelnuts and tobacco. Better hurry if you want a taste, though, as the brew is only available through January 2015.

LN COOKS
From My House to Yours Q: Chef, I saw your wonderful gingerbread house at River City, and enjoyed breakfast with my family a few days ago. Would you share the recipe for the gingerbread cookie stars you served? I would like to make some for Christmas this year.
A: I am so glad you had such a wonderful time in our little home away from home! The gingerbread house took some 30 people to make over five days, and truly is a gift for all to experience. The cookies are a simple recipe that our pastry chefs developed, and I am glad to share it with you. Gingerbread has a long history that goes as far back as ancient Greece and Egypt, where they would use the elusive ginger root to make cookies, biscuits and cakes as gifts for special occasions. It seems that more than 2,500 years later, we are doing the same. It’s truly a shame that we don’t share these wonderful delights more often throughout the whole year. A favorite holiday memory is when my grandmother from Ireland used to add oats to the dough as she rolled it out to give it a little Irish texture.

Gingerbread Cookies
DIRECTIONS:
Note: When it comes to baking, it is best to work with weights to get the most accurate measurements. Baking is a science and recipes must be followed. This recipe makes approximately three dozen large cookies.
Place the butter, sugar, milk and molasses into sauce pan and heat to 110 degrees. In separate bowl, stir the mixture until smooth paste is formed. Sift the flour, baking soda and spice together. Once the butter mixture is smooth, slowly fold in the flour mixture. Refrigerate dough overnight.
INGREDIENTS: 2 lb., 5 1/2 ounces butter
15 ounces milk
The following day, roll out the dough to the desired thickness. Use star-shaped cookiecutter or use a knife to manually cut into star shapes. Place on cookie sheets. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 15 minutes.
6 lb., 9 ounces high-gluten flour
Use icing pens to decorate each cookie.
2 lb., 5 1/2 ounces sugar 2 lb., 13 ounces molasses
1 1/4 ounces baking powder 5 ounces ground cinnamon ground 2 1/2 ounces ground clove 2 1/2 ounces ground ginger Assorted color icing pens for decorating

and we avoid feelings of resentment, since we’re giving our time to the things we value,” Kershenski says. Chappell heartily agrees that we should focus on what we value most about the holidays. “Be realistic and give yourself permission to turn down some things,” she adds. • Recognize that the holidays are not happy for everyone. In fact, people struggling with depression or anxiety often find the holidays the most difficult time of year due to cultural expectations to be joyous all the time. “Some people may have experienced a recent loss or be dealing with a difficult life challenge, like illness or unemployment,” Chappell says. “Include these people as appropriate but be sensitive to their needs.” • S et reasonable expectations. “Don’t strive for perfection,” Kershenski says. “You can only control your own thoughts and feelings, not others’, so pleasing others may or may not happen.” Chappell adds that planning ahead by creating organized to-do lists that distribute tasks evenly will help avoid last-minute rushing to shop, clean or bake. • Take care of yourself. Members of the Women’s Advisory Board include Ruth Brouster, Trish Cheatham, Cathy Christ, Virgina Howell, Julie Keeley, Michelle O’Toole, Joan Schnoebelen, Suzanne Spence, Courtney Stotler, Martha Uhlhorn and Amanda Wellford. “Not only are these ladies business leaders in their own right, but they’re also very active in the community,” Brouster says. “[This] really helps create a link between the bank and the community we serve—and that’s a very important responsibility that Reliance has.” The Women’s Advisory Board, which will be headquartered at the new Frontenac branch when it opens in May, will officially kick-off in 2015, says Brouster. “We’re excited to have them involved.”
