EDITOR I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT THE ART OF SELF-CARE is one that I am truly, magnificently terrible at practicing. Amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, I hardly have time to breathe, let alone do anything meaningfully restorative. And at the holidays? Forget about it. That is why I crave the tips and knowhow in this week’s issue, starting with Brittany Nay’s Style feature on page 33 about Studio Branca’s incredibly luxe wintertime spa treatments and products to keep you rejuvenated all season long. From the HydraFacial to the 24-karat gold HydraDetox face mask – you can pretty much call my holiday wish list done! And for the overly busy – who are striving to stay up to date on the top styles for 2020, but who lack the time for routine, leisurely Pinterest scrolls – Alecia Humphreys relays the most notable interior design trends at this year’s renowned High Point Market showcase in North Carolina on page 24 in this week’s Abode section. Finally, what better way to treat yourself than with a night on the town at one of St. Louis’ most acclaimed – not to mention gorgeous – venues? In this week’s Arts & Culture section on page 62, LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach covers the 90th anniversary of The Fabulous Fox Theatre by giving readers a glimpse into the grand old lady’s past, as well

ake the resolution to live life as you imagined it. Enjoy culturedriven conversations with fellow intellectuals. Embrace your competitive nature in a game of bridge or bocce ball. Visit to your favorite St. Louis haunts and trips to some places you’ve yet to go. Why wait? Exceptional living begins here at The Gatesworth. “One of the great benefits of independent living is you [can put what you want] on the calendar,” says resident program director Kathy Davis. “You get this goodie bag of stimulated living. Free, optional accoutrements that can make residents feel relevant in conversations, or expose them to new music and films. Whether you’re a competitive bridge player, like politics or art classes, these are things to look forward to [at The Gatesworth].” Transitioning from a beloved family home to a community for seniors can be challenging. At The Gatesworth, the move can feel rewarding with endless opportunities to socialize while still providing residents the peace of having their own home and the ability to do as they please. Residents Margot and Allen Heininger, for instance, have found complete compatibility with their surroundings. “Staying active is easy,” notes Margot Heininger. “There are all kinds of exercise programs. My husband loves to swim laps. One of the nicest things we can still do is [participate in] our civic activities by supporting the [Saint Louis] Science Center and The Muny. We live a perfectly secure life here.” Her husband, Allen Heininger, agrees. “We’re particularly pleased with the staff,” he adds. “They’re just good people. We know the original founders and they had their heart set in the right way. The needs of the people are seen to, with a good facility and staff.” A diverse roster of activities ensures that residents keep sharp as well, from a book club and current events weekly discussion group to a lecture series and philosophical discussion group with university professors. “We serve dessert and coffee at The Philosophical Café,” describes Davis. “The professor lays out a topic – kind of a big, open-ended [thought]. He recently

talked about the limitations on freedom of speech. He gets the conversation going and skillfully directs it around the room so that anyone can weigh in.” These stimulating debates invigorate residents’ minds as much as do the cultural events that residents can attend around the city. They can even enjoy fun excursions to neighborhood favorites, like Milo’s Tavern on The Hill, where residents take part in friendly competitions with bocce ball. The Gatesworth also provides gaming opportunities on its pristine landscaping, with a newly laid, seven-hole putting green. “We have a putting contest once a month, with prizes,” tells Davis. “I’ve been amazed at the prowess of our women golfers!” Meals at the independent living community are an experience in themselves. The Gatesworth’s executive chef trained at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and has served on the local board for the American Culinary Association, as well as central regional VP on its national board. “I love making people happy,” describes Chef Brian Hardy. “It’s nice to do things when you hear residents love a certain [dish]. When they see you make that for them, they feel like, out of the 300 people around, you’re cooking for them. To be able to have that kind of connection is one of the best parts of my career.” In addition, Hardy takes on apprentices as an adjunct professor at Forest Park – St. Louis Community College, offering externships at The Gatesworth to his students. He is proud to watch as they go on and achieve national and international success. This all translates to an inspired team of culinary creatives at the ready to serve residents’ mouth-watering dishes. From meals to remember and events that inspire, residents at The Gatesworth feel like they are living la dolce vita. “You’re living as good a spot as you can right here,” advises Allen Heininger. “There’s no place like home – and this is home to us now.” The Gatesworth, One McKnight Place, St. Louis, 314-993-0111, thegatesworth.com LadueNews.com | December 13, 2019   11 a ladue news special promotion | LadueNews.com | decemBer 13, 2019 11

Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

n a fun-filled evening at Grant’s Farm in Grantwood Village, the St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association recently held its annual Unlock the Magic of Learning fundraiser. The family-friendly event included a silent and live auction, live music from St. Louis’ SMASH BAND, a dinner buffet and adult beverage tastings, as well as a Clydesdale named Rascal, stilt walkers, balloon animals, face painting, inflatables, a fortune teller, a Wii station and several animals from the farm’s menagerie. Last year alone, funds raised from events like this helped the association impact more than 7,600 area children, parents and educators. The association aids children to reach their full potential through varied programs like educational coaching, early childhood outreach and personalized tutoring.

So many kids have learning disabilities that go undiagnosed, and they fail to thrive in school. This opens opportunities for kids of all ages to get help that they wouldn’t otherwise get. Missouri Baptist Healthcare Foundation

BACK TO THE EIGHTIES Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

T

eased hair recently ran rampant at Missouri Baptist Healthcare Foundation’s Back to the Eighties event. Guests met the character of “Doc Brown” and his DeLorean (from the 1985 film Back to the Future and its sequels) before visiting the 12th floor of St. Louis’ Angad Arts Hotel; there they journeyed in time to the halcyon era of MTV and leg warmers. Most guests arrived in costume and fit right in with ’80s slogans, music and products around each corner. The event even featured a special visit by “Pee-wee Herman.” Proceeds went to the Missouri Baptist Medical Center Stroke Program to support its efforts to treat more than 2,000 stroke or ministroke patients each year.

Thanks to the generosity of our community and guests, we will be able to support stroke survivors and their caregivers after they leave the hospital. We will provide ongoing education, therapy services, nutritional support and more to help stroke survivors and their families thrive in their daily lives. CELEBRITY SHOOTOUT Photos and story by Diane Anderson

G

olfers recently gathered at St. Charles’ Bogey Hills Country Club to support The Snow Foundation. Its Celebrity Shootout featured golf, 14 par-3 holes with unique hole-in-one contests, four par-5 long-drive holes, a $100,000 shootout for 18 golfers, lunch and an awards reception, plus celebrities interacting with the teams. The great day for golf supported the foundation, a voice for a rare disease, working toward a cure for Wolfram Syndrome. The single largest supporter of Wolfram Syndrome research in the world, the foundation originated with Stephanie Gebel and her brother, J.T. Snow, former San Francisco Giants first baseman and six-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, after Gebel’s daughter, Raquel, was diagnosed with the syndrome.

This day is important for The Snow Foundation because it raises funds to help find a cure for Wolfram Syndrome and increases awareness for this cause. My sister, Stephanie Snow Gebel, and I are committed to finding a cure. J.T. SNOW, CO-FOUNDER

HigH Point

Highlights By Alecia Humphreys Photos submitted by Design & Detail, Jessie D. Miller Interior Design and KDR Designer Showrooms

24   December 13, 2019 | LadueNews.com

A number of local interior design experts share the hottest trends displayed at this fall’s High Point Market.

T

exture is the trend to watch for heading into this coming year – or at least that’s what three local interior design experts are saying after an October trip to North Carolina’s renowned High Point Market, a home furnishings gathering that’s essentially the epicenter for all things new and directional. “Texture takes the stage this season with bold prints and patterns, tactile and plush fabrics, woven furniture and sleek surfaces offering highcontrast finish,” says Amanda Bauer, director of marketing at KDR Designer Showrooms. “Textured materials were seen everywhere.” The textured materials in question seemed to trend toward rattan, cane, wicker and raffia, and all were showcased on case goods far and wide. “Cane and rattan seemed to be huge this past market,” adds Lisa Davis, who is the visual presentation and merchandising specialist for KDR. “I love how cane and rattan is being reinvented and how it’s coming back in a more modern way.” One of Davis’ favorites from the market was a cane armchair by Barbara Barry for Baker Furniture. It has a sleek and sophisticated darkwood curvy frame, cane backing and sides, and a meticulous leather seat. Jessie Miller, the fierce femme behind her namesake business of Jessie D. Miller Interior Design, couldn’t agree more in terms of the texture trend – her standout piece from High Point, though, was by far the Selamat poppy armoire.

LadueNews.com | December 13, 2019   25 LadueNews.com | december 13, 2019 25

“It is probably my all-time favorite piece at market,” Miller says. “It’s displaying a slick white lacquer, and then it has warm wood grains; it has cane accents, and it has some blingy gold on it. It’s just a stunning piece. I absolutely love it. I’m probably going to order one for myself.” In addition to the textures, Miller pinpointed fringe as another focus at the market. “Every single showroom had fringe trim on a sofa – even modern, clean-lined sofas,” Miller says. “Fringe is also big in lighting right now. It can be anything from the whole chandelier to a fringe shade or something as simplistic as a tassel on the switch of a table lamp.” Design & Detail showroom manager Carolyn Brotherton says she saw a resurgence in color as another big trend this year. “There was a lot of a dusty blue color,” Brotherton says. “I think blue is always kind of hot, especially in St. Louis, but [the current trend is] a real pretty, kind of dusty blue that we were seeing, [as well as] some emerald green and pops of orange.” KDR furniture sales supervisor Danielle DeNure echoed Brotherton’s sentiments over emerald elegance. “This market, we saw more saturated jewel tones and warm colors introduced,” she says. “Gray is also still prominent in most showrooms, but warmer tans, camels and beige colors are coming back in style.” Miller agreed with that notion of two prominent palettes. “Overall lighter tone-on-tone,” Miller says. “A lot of champagne-colored upholstery, and then a ton of woven materials. With the neutral palettes, the actual quality of each piece is on display a lot more than with multiple colors. You have to have more intention with things when you use a neutral palette because there is no room to hide. In addition to neutrals, warmer colors are becoming relevant, like burnt oranges, poppy – just going earthier with the palette.” It’s evident from Miller’s personal portfolio that she is running with these warm tones – especially within the emerald realm. “I feel like a lot of people associate me with black and white, which I will always love, but that is as graphic as you can possibly get,” Miller says. “I’ve been leaning much more toward the monochromatic look as a whole – color on color, tone on tone. With that, focusing more on the actual material and the shapes of things.” By adding textural components, neutral hues and a pop of color, any space is sure to take shape. And thanks to the experts in question, some of the featured products at High Point Market will be in area stores very soon. “We see so much when we’re there, and we look to buy items that we think are unique,” Brotherton says. “I always enjoy going because it gets you excited for the season – looking forward to the new products that are coming back.” Design & Detail, 2731 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood, 314-781-3336, designanddetailstl.com Jessie D. ELEMENTS

SMALL BUT MIGHTY By Emily Adams

S

ometimes, less is more. Such was the case with Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath designer Wendy Kuhn’s recent Ladue powder room renovation. “I think the good lesson to learn from this remodel is that it does not necessarily require a big renovation to get great impact,” Kuhn says. As just one chapter of a larger home remodeling project, the petite space Kuhn had to work with might have required fewer decisions, but each one weighed heavier on the design itself. “Nothing was moved, and a lot of the existing fixtures were not even replaced,” she explains. “It just took a few bold choices to make the space completely transformed into this impactful new powder room.” The focal point for Kuhn’s design was a showstopping mirror that her client already owned. Taking the rest of her design inspiration from the kitchen renovation she was also doing in the home – and perhaps her client’s black-and-white dog, Holly, she teases – Kuhn chose a neutral wallpaper that would add a modern touch to the room and reflected the pattern of the mirror. Adding to the overall dramatic effect of the narrow room’s motif is the black, horizontal shiplap accent wall that serves to elongate the illusion of the design. “[The shiplap] helped simplify an overwhelming wallpaper while keeping modern drama in the space,” Kuhn says. One of the main challenges with the remodel included a duct that ran behind the statement mirror, which was immovable. Another was finding sconces that didn’t compete with the gold tone of the mirror. “It took a lot of searching,” she says. It was predominantly her client’s defined taste and direction that kept the project moving. “She had the vision for this space the whole time and did a lot of the searching on her own,” Kuhn says. “A lot of it was just asking my opinion about her selections – she was great [to work with]!”

An AreA sAlon/spA offers the lAtest dermAl treAtments to leAve A customer’s skin refreshed And rejuvenAted All winter long.

T

o help clients forgo dry winter skin woes, the gifted aestheticians at Studio Branca are delivering the hottest spa treatments and advanced new products to keep skin glowing through the holiday season and into the new year. As one of the metro area’s top beauty destinations – with salon and spa locations in Creve Coeur and Chesterfield – Studio Branca has seven highly trained aestheticians ready to indulge clients in soothing wintertime skin care treatments for the face, neck and décolletage – HydraFacial, SkinPen Microneedling and HydraNeedling. President and owner Mark Branca says his spas combine top-of-the-line technology and products with advanced medical spa education and training through Studio Branca’s school, The Salon Professional Academy, in order provide clients with the best results. “With 31 years in business, serving 200 guests a day, we have a leg up,” Branca says. “The huge difference for us is our foundation of a commitment to lifelong training and learning. We’re living in a world where we have, at our fingertips, the latest techniques and treatments.” Among those top treatments, the Branca Signature HydraFacial deeply cleanses, extracts and moisturizes the skin with deluxe serums packed with antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid. The hyper-hydrating treatment – which requires no downtime – minimizes fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, sunspots and scarring, leaving the dermis refreshed and revitalized. “It’s not just a rubdown to feel good, fresh and moisturized,” says Callie Andrews, director of marketing and events. “You see immediate results that last beyond a day or two.” The HydraFacial, a best-in-field proprietary system, leaves skin so glowing that it can even eliminate the need to wear makeup, Andrews adds. For the deepest dermal treatment, the spas offer SkinPen Microneedling – another top proprietary system. The minimally invasive procedure creates microchannels in the skin that trigger the body’s immune response, sending collagen and elastin to the treated areas for dermal cell regeneration. The collagen-boosting treatment – which requires little to no downtime – delivers impactful results, from improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to diminishing scars and hyperpigmentation. “Microneedling is recommended to be done in a regimen so your skin’s collagen stays at that consistent high level,” Andrews says. “It can be used on the face, neck and chest, as well as the hands, elbows and knees for a great tightening effect.” Branca recommends clients receive HydraFacial and SkinPen Microneedling treatments on an alternating monthly cycle to reveal radiant skin and maintain a healthy glow. To combine these two treatments into one session, the spas also offer HydraNeedling. The treatment includes SkinPen Microneedling to open up the skin to receive the HydraFacial peel and products from top medical-grade lines SkinCeuticals and NeoCutis that address both surface and below-surface dermal issues. “This is my favorite treatment because the results are allin-one,” Andrews says. “And there is only half a day of downtime,

where you’ll appear a little flushed or pink, like you’ve gotten some sun or went to the gym. The best part is, you get that immediate ‘wow’ factor.” This winter, Studio Branca is also unveiling the latest products to renew a client’s face, lips, lashes and brows: medical-grade, at-home face peel skin-brightening pads with green tea and aloe; a 24-karat gold HydraDetox face mask to increase elasticity and diminish fine lines and wrinkles; a renewing, volumizing lip mask for smoothing, toxin removal and skin cell renewal; an intensely hydrating lip balm; and a 100 percent vegan Hydropeptide serum for enhancing the lashes and brows. And just in time for the bustling holidays, the spas have expanded their team. “We have two new aestheticians … and new services and products to benefit the needs of our clients, so we are more prepared than ever for our busiest time of year – the holiday season,” Andrews says. All services are available at both Studio Branca locations by booking appointments online or by phoning the desired spa. Those looking to revive their skin amid another harsh Midwestern winter and get photo-ready for the holidays can rely on Studio Branca for medical-grade spa services in a warm, merry atmosphere. Ari Madilian of Single Stone recently paid one such visit during a custom design event. “At Single Stone, we built the reputation of being the most thorough and most skilled in restoration of antique pieces, first in the west coast [area]”. and then across the US,” Madilian says. “We love the aesthetic of an old stone more than its modern counterparts. We’re more connected to pieces for their beauty as a whole, not the non-romantic aspects of the four C’s [cut, color, clarity, carat].” “Ari and [his wife] Corina handpick each stone,” adds Gabriella Lonardo, a sales representative for Single Stone. “People fall for these pieces because they all have their own personality. They are works of art.” It seems only natural then that this distinctive jeweler would make such a brilliant pair with YLANG YLANG. Savory Japanese Pancakes With Lox and Whipped Yogurt Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott

I

n a season so steeped in food memories and traditions, I want to shake things up. Inspired by one of my favorite flavor profiles for the holidays – cured salmon with all the fixings – I’ve combined lox with a savory, fluffy and exceptionally delicious Japanese pancake. The dish makes the perfect vehicle for everything that sits atop it. Also, unlike traditional American pancakes, Japanese pancakes aren’t limited to just breakfast or brunch – they’re great anytime, anywhere.

ln

Yields | 6 pancakes |

Whipped Yogurt Sauce  ½ cup Greek yogurt  1 tsp dry dill  ½ tsp honey

 1 Tbsp olive oil  salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Japanese Pancakes      

2 egg yolks 2 Tbsp milk 6 Tbsp cake flour 1 tsp salt ½ tsp baking powder 3 Tbsp finely sliced scallions or chives  5 egg whites

 ¼ tsp cream of tartar  nonstick cooking oil spray  whipped yogurt sauce, to serve (recipe above)  4 oz cured lox, to serve  1 small red onion, slivered, to serve  chopped dill, to serve

| Preparation – Whipped Yogurt Sauce | Mix yogurt with dill, honey and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and set aside. | Preparation – Japanese Pancakes | Whisk egg yolks with milk. Sift flour, salt and baking powder over egg yolk mixture, and stir until fully incorporated. Add scallions or chives. In a separate mixing bowl, beat egg whites with cream of tartar until thick, stiff peaks form. Slowly fold egg white mixture into egg yolk mixture, a third at a time, being careful not to deflate mix. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-low heat, turning down to low heat once warm. Spray pan with nonstick cooking oil spray. Pour ¼ cup of batter into pan to form each pancake; cover with a lid. After 2 to 3 minutes, open lid and pour an additional ¼ cup of batter on top of each mound (goal being to form thick, high pancakes); cover and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Open lid and gently flip each pancake; cover and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove pancakes from pan, and garnish with yogurt sauce, lox, red onion and dill. Serve warm.

Amanda Elliott is the chef at Peachtree Catering (peachtreebanquet.com) in Columbia, Missouri, and authors the website Rustic Supper (rusticsupper.com), where she shares recipes centering on the idea of the communal table and embracing the heritage of food through travel. She also hosts a series of pop-up dinners in Columbia called Sunday Suppers.

BUSINESS NOTES

TeaTime W ith more than 100 loose-leaf tea and tea-adjacent offerings – from standards such as green, white, black, oolong and herbal, to handcrafted options that come directly from tea farmers in Sri Lanka, eastern India, Japan, China and more – there’s plenty to fill anyone’s cup at Traveling Tea. The Maplewood shop opened in 2013, but owner Kateri Meyer had been selling her wares for five years prior to that at area farmers markets. Today, in addition to the bricks-and-mortar shop, Traveling Tea can be purchased at area Kakao Chocolate locations and Local Harvest Grocery in St. Louis, as well as more than a dozen area cafés and restaurants, including Winslow’s Table in University City, Webster Groves Garden Café and Seed Sprout Spoon, also in St. Louis. About 90 percent of the loose-leaf tea is organic, and 25 percent is fair-trade. Best-sellers include organic Irish Breakfast, organic Jasmine Green tea and an organic guayusa ginger-citrus herbal tea. Traveling Tea is also known for its dozen-plus custom blends, including a farmer-direct heritage black iced-tea blend and a minty Mauhaus No. 6 herbal blend. Meyer has otherwise recently introduced an iced green tea version of the black tea favorite, as well as on-trend tea sodas that are chilled and ready to drink. Any of the loose-leaf teas can be brewed fresh and enjoyed while a customer shops, in addition to milk tea, cream tea, and matcha and chai drinks on the menu. Plus, customers can earn discounts on drinks if they bring their own cup, as well as discounts on small quantities of loose-leaf tea if they bring their own jar or tin.

DECEMBER 13, 2019 | LadueNews.com

Meyer recognizes that the breadth of offerings can be overwhelming and that many people already have a cabinet full of tea at home – the standard minimum at many tea shops measures 2 ounces. Traveling Tea instead sells as little as a 2-teaspoon trial size (making a 16-ounce mug) or a 1-ounce option (making eight to 23 cups) and up to 4-ounce sizes. “To my knowledge,” she says, “Traveling Tea is the only local tea shop where you can buy single-serving quantities to try out new flavors (which are also great for travel), that has the largest selection of herbal teas (no caffeine) in St. Louis, and that offers the highcaffeine herbals – guayusa and yaupon.”

By Bethany Christo

Meyer is particularly excited about the shop’s winter offerings: “Our seasonal-only teas are the hot favorites: Butterscotch White, Dark Chocolate Peppermint, Chocolate Cherry Jerry and Aztec Spice have historically been the most popular for the holidays.” And just in time for last-minute shopping, Traveling Tea sells gift-ready tea sampler packs – create-yourown, black tea, fruity flavors, flavored tea, herbals and more – plus new infusers and small pots to round out the package.

we do to the city for a long time,” Bognar says. “The concept is chef-driven and really centers around food I like and want to cook. The flavor profiles are rooted in the food my family’s been cooking for years – Thai and Southeast Asian food, with an homage to techniques I’ve learned throughout the years.” Filling the space that previously housed Good Fortune, iNDO involved St. Louis’ Let’s Create Space for interior design: a modern, minimalist look accentuated by lush plants throughout the dining areas and homages to Thailand – referencing Bognar’s half-Thai, half-American heritage, as well as the name iNDO, short for Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam). The spacious granite chef’s counter forms the restaurant’s centerpiece.

Highlights from the debut menu include whole fried madai (a type of fish) with mango sweet chile sauce and papaya salad, a dish reminiscent of Bognar’s time spent in Thailand. Crab donabe (Japanese for “clay pot”) rice also numbers among his personal favorites; it involves Dungeness crab, crab fat and ikura (wild salmon caviar) cooked in a clay pot and finished tableside. Shrimp toast, another popular pick, features a shrimp and chicken-fat croquette, potato bread from Botanical Heights’ Union Loafers and cucumber relish. To drink, iNDO offers a beverage list that includes craft cocktails inspired by Southeast Asian flavors, around 16 curated wine selections, canned Asian

The restaurant, which debuted in June, features seafood, small plates and larger-format hot plates for sharing, as well as a chef’s counter that offers sashimi, nigiri and multicourse dinners. cocktails and canned and bottled beers, including Hite, Singha and Tiger. All things considered, iNDO sounds like a wonderful culinary destination prior to enjoying Pride and Prejudice from The Rep. “We’re offering a lot of unique and interesting things not available at other restaurants,” Bognar says. “The biggest thing about this place is, you can come here with your friends and try a dozen different flavors across a dozen different dishes – enjoying Asian food how I would want to eat it by sharing rich and spicy courses and light, easy, clean dishes throughout your meal.”

‌Story:  Mrs. Bennet is frenzied over safely marrying off her four daughters. That’s because Mr. Bennet’s estate will go to a male relative – his second cousin, Mr. Collins – on Mr. Bennet’s death, leaving his widow and daughters homeless and destitute. At Mrs. Bennet’s prodding, Mr. Bennet introduces himself to their new neighbor, the wealthy, affable Mr. Bingley. The latter promptly invites the Bennets to a ball at his stately manor, Netherfield. There, the oldest Bennet daughter, Jane, immediately feels attracted to Bingley. However, the second oldest daughter, Elizabeth, fails to impress Bingley’s even wealthier friend, the proud, brooding Mr. Darcy, who finds her looks merely “tolerable.” Thus begins an often contentious, albeit witty and compelling, attraction between the intelligent, independent Elizabeth and the reserved, often aloof Darcy. Elizabeth informs her parents she will marry only for love, which could lead her to dire straits in England’s strict upper class. She rejects a proposal from the pompous, unimpressive Mr. Collins, while also fiercely protecting Jane’s feelings and attempting to counsel their flighty, younger sister, Lydia. The latter obsesses over military men, particularly the superficially charming George Wickham – a man with a mysterious past connecting him to Darcy the difficult. Mrs. Bennet strives, in her own superficial way, to marry off her daughters, while Darcy’s haughty aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, wants him to wed her sickly daughter, Anne. Mr. Bennet’s Longbourn estate, Bingley’s Netherfield and Darcy’s Pemberley mansion in Derbyshire all manifest as busy settings for the landed gentry and their peculiar problems. Highlights:  Augustin Family Artistic Director Hana S. Sharif makes her directorial debut with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis with this exquisitely conceived and accomplished paean to the timeless charm and acute observations of novelist Jane Austen. The Rep’s adaptation of Austen’s enduring Pride and Prejudice is impossibly romantic and richly rapturous in its depiction of Austen’s finely etched characters. Other Info:  Sharif previously presented a version of Christopher Baker’s adaptation of Austen’s novel at Baltimore Center Stage in 2015. At the helm of The Rep’s rendition, Sharif oversees an impressive technical team, which welcomes audiences to the refined elegance of the three estates. Scott Bradley’s scenic design literally sets the stage via a beautiful, meticulously crafted two-tiered set. Alex Basco Koch’s incisive projection design firmly plants the story in its elegant era. Xavier Pierce’s lavish lighting design subtly supports everything, while Dorothy Marshall Englis’ refined costumes handsomely dress the characters. Sharif’s precise, fluid pacing allows her players

to fully inhabit Austen’s memorable and often eccentric characters (with one notable exception). Katie Kleiger, who leads the ensemble, fully presents Elizabeth’s determined streak of independence while conveying the Bennet beauty’s realization of her own shortcomings when drawing hasty conclusions. Nick Rehberger conjures a satisfying portrayal of the enigmatic Darcy, evolving from an opinion of Elizabeth’s “tolerable” features to an appreciation of her character, intelligence and personality. Rebecca Haden does fine work as earnest Jane, as does Grayson DeJesus as the amiable Bingley. Michelle Hand masterfully depicts the pushy, obnoxious elements in the personality of Mrs. Bennet while underscoring her desperation to marry off her daughters at a time when women had severely limited opportunities for self-expression and independence. Michael James Reed provides an amusing contrast as the long-suffering but wily Mr. Bennet. Blake Segal excels at capturing Collins’ oily personality, and Stephen Michael Spencer conveys Wickham’s deceptive charm. Eric Dean White and Rayme Cornell do well as Mr. Bennet’s brother and sister-in-law, Teresa Doggett nicely handles the role of Darcy’s housekeeper, and Gerry Love is dapper as the quiet commander of the militia wherein Wickham serves. Lizan Mitchell amuses as the Bennets’ bizarre servant, but her overthe-top, insufferable Lady Catherine – the notable exception mentioned earlier – borders on cartoonish, something she and Sharif might wish to tone down. As literary and illuminating as ever in The Rep’s highly appealing rendition, Pride and Prejudice makes a splendid choice for a holiday show.

Winter Celebrations

A

s wintry cold increases, families spend more time inside seeking ways to connect and make memories – especially during the holidays. In that regard, Ready Readers recommends three books to explore how holidays are celebrated worldwide and how holiday traditions began. Lights of Winter: Celebrations Around the World comes from writer Heather Conrad and illustrator deForest Walker. In olden times, Conrad explains, people created stories to account for the declining sunlight hours at this time of year. Using simple descriptions, she highlights 10 December celebrations, past and present. From ancient Mesopotamia’s winter festival of Zagmuk, through Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas and more, to the 20th-century beginnings of Kwanzaa, readers learn what unites people and their winter celebrations. Like Lights of Winter, this month’s second recommendation is nonfiction aimed at children 5 and older. What Do You Celebrate? Holidays and Festivals Around the World by writer Whitney Stewart and illustrator Christiane Engel covers a

year’s traditions and delves into the food, games, flags, countries and cultures of celebrators. Recipes and craft activities accompany the stories of the various festivals and invite readers to experience the fun and traditions for themselves. From this book, children and parents alike should gain insight, respect and understanding of the festivities and traditions enjoyed by friends from other backgrounds. This month’s final recommendation, a delightful picture book titled Sun Bread from writer/illustrator Elisa Kleven, may be enjoyed by all ages. An award-

winning illustrator, Kleven combines her richly layered mixed-media pictures with evocative, lyrical verse that sets the tone from the first stanza: “The wind it whooshed, the snow it whirled. The rain streamed down; it sloshed and swirled, and washed the colors from the world.” In Sun Bread, a baker missed the sun so much that she decided to bake a sun-shaped bread: “She kneaded bread dough, rich and gold; glossy springy, smooth to hold. She shaped a bread so round and grand it seemed the sun shone in her hands!” As the dough rises and bakes, the comforting aroma of warm, fresh bread attracts her neighbors, who gather to share the goodness. The book ends with a recipe for Sun Bread – and an invitation for families to follow the baker’s lead and create their own warmth and fun this winter.

or a nonagenarian, the grand old lady continues to look quite … foxy. The Fabulous Fox Theatre, that is. This year, that revered landmark in St. Louis’ Covenant Blu-Grand Center neighborhood has been celebrating nine decades in existence, having opened on the last day of January in 1929 – the year that closed with the infamous Great Crash and subsequent onset of the Great Depression. Fortunately, The Fabulous Fox itself mostly weathered those tandem calamities in fine fashion, and according to John O’Brien, the theater’s present director of programming, it’s been enjoying a “thrilling” anniversary in 2019. “We’ve been celebrating throughout the year in a number of different ways,” O’Brien says. “We kicked off our anniversary with a Grand Center party for our friends and neighbors, featuring special Fox-themed treats and an exploration of the theater’s history. “While this kickoff event and a number of celebratory specials throughout the year have been a great way to celebrate the 90th anniversary of The Fabulous Fox, the true celebration

came from our jam-packed performance lineup. From Dear Evan Hansen and Hello, Dolly! to Diana Ross and The Avett Brothers, we can think of no better way to celebrate this beautiful, historic theater than by bringing in some of the biggest and best entertainment in the world.” C. Howard Crane, an architect specializing in cinemas and similar structures, designed The Fabulous Fox “as a king-size … movie and vaudeville house with its own symphony orchestra, barbershop for ushers and second organ to serenade people lined up in the foyer,” according to A Guide to the Architecture of St. Louis by George McCue and Frank Peters. McCue and Peters laud Crane’s work, noting that the layout “moves large numbers of theatergoers smoothly through an entertaining labyrinth that affords them unexpected views of the foyer, the auditorium and themselves. The climb to the upper balcony is 95 steps, but Crane makes the experience a pleasant one.” After a somewhat troubled midcentury for the theater, Lion of the Valley, James Neal Primm’s integral area history, relates that “Mary and Leon Strauss put the ‘Fabulous Fox’ back in business

in 1982. With the usual tax incentives, they restored the fourlevel 4,500-seat movie palace to its 1920s-style lush extravagance. “One observer – an admirer of its ‘red-marble columns rising to an opulent vault’ – said that one’s eyes were ‘practically blinded by the jewel-studded light fixtures.’ A grand staircase and velvet throne chairs, done in the ‘Siamese Byzantine’ style, added to the effect. In this glamorous setting, crowds filled the house to see and hear media stars and to admire the theater.” O’Brien and his colleagues certainly appreciate their milieu (likely much to the envy of those who toil in less stellar settings). “We feel so lucky to be able to call such a beautiful venue our ‘office,’” he says. “The architecture and design of the theater are truly breathtaking, and the details are pretty remarkable. “It’s so exciting to work in a place with such a unique and rich history, and there’s always something new to discover, learn about or see. One of the most special parts of working at The Fabulous Fox is getting to share this gorgeous space and history with St. Louis. We love being a part of this community and creating fabulous memories for our guests.” That feeling, O’Brien continues, has not gone unreciprocated, especially this year. “We’re thrilled by the love and support we’ve received by St. Louis and our fabulous guests,” he says. “We love hearing from guests about how much they enjoy their visits to The Fabulous Fox and the shows we bring. The Fabulous Fox has become a tradition for many St. Louis families, and we’re honored to be a part of so many families’ histories.” Regarding this year’s celebration, O’Brien reflects on what has proven most satisfying to date. “The Grand Center anniversary party was incredibly exciting to be a part of,” he recalls. “Being able to welcome our Grand Center neighbors over to the Fox to celebrate such a historic event was a great way to kick off our anniversary. “We love that The Fabulous Fox brings so many different people together, so to have an event that represented that sense of community was very special.” Finally, O’Brien reveals how The Fabulous Fox plans to cap the current celebration – and also “teases” the landmark’s 100th anniversary. “We’re ending our 90th with a bang, with a jam-packed performance lineup!” he says. “What better note to end the year on than with hits like Wicked and some of our holiday favorites? “We’ve got some exciting plans in store for The Fabulous Fox’s centennial, which will surely include even more world-class entertainment and Broadway hits.” The Fabulous Fox Theatre, 527 N.
