CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE

SOCIETY YOU MIGHT SAY HE’S THE PERFECT MATE: HE’S SMART, GOOD-NATURED and charming. And soon, he’ll find a home that’ll be perfect for him. Trooper, the puppy who made headlines after that horrific dragging incident last year, is ready to meet his forever family. The staffers at the Humane Society of Missouri, who have been with Trooper through thick and thin (seven surgeries, numerous therapies and continuous hours of training), have whittled down the list of prospective adoptive families to six. The hope is to send Trooper home with his new family for the holidays. I recently had the good fortune of meeting Trooper, who is intelligent and friendly as can be. It seems improbable that this is the same dog who was clinging to life following his ordeal. With tens of thousands of Facebook fans, a YouTube following and even the subject of a book, Trooper’s Triumphs, Trooper has become the symbol of hope for countless other animals victimized by abuse and neglect. Soon, Trooper will have his own ‘Happily Ever After’ story. ‘Til then, read about our featured pet in this month’s column, proudly sponsored by Carol House Furniture (p. 34).

This year, I have had opportunities to cook for many people here in St. Louis, including the Crystal Cajun Cook-off, and at ‘Baconfest’ to raise money for the Missouri USO, as well as baking pies for Operation FoodSearch for PhilantroPie. My wish is to be given the chance to do more next year. The heartfelt warmth from everyone has been truly priceless.”

The Humane Society’s Kathy Warnick and Trooper get a visit from LN’s Trish Muyco-Tobin.

The HUMANE SOCIETY OF MISSOURI is busy conducting interviews with potential adoptive families for Trooper, the puppy who barely survived after being dragged behind a pickup truck along I-55 in November 2012. The now-1 1/2-year-old dog has endured seven surgeries and has received advanced therapy treatment to assist with his healing. Trooper, who became available for adoption in early November, currently is in a foster home, where he is undergoing extensive training and getting plenty of social exposure. The goal is to find him a forever family just in time for the holidays.

Ready for your close-up? Ladue News is looking to feature YOU in an upcoming issue! We are compiling a gallery of readers who are helping us spread the joys of the season by participating in our annual HOLIDAY WISH LIST DRIVE to benefit FOOD OUTREACH. Congratulations to TONY LA RUSSA, the winningest manager in Cardinals history, who will soon be in the Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). The announcement came this week from the HOF’s expansion-era committee. The Dec. 14 event at The Chase Park Plaza, themed ‘A Silver Dream of Milan in The Lou,’ will feature local Project Runway designers, celebrity models and longtime co-emcees WENDY WIESE and CHRISTINE BUCK. You’ll find the area’s newest bookstore in Kirkwood, where STL BOOKS recently opened its doors to the public. The store’s owner, ROBIN THEISS, lives in the neighborhood and has been involved in literary pursuits all her life—as a writer, publisher, book collector and former president of the St. Louis Writers Guild. The store, at 100 W. Jefferson Ave., features new and used titles with an emphasis on classic and contemporary works, as well as the arts, philosophy, history, children’s literature and St. Louis-related topics. Her union-carpenter husband, RON, built the store; and their daughter, ERIN, is manager.

What looks like sunshine and tastes like citrus, florals and tropical fruits? Give yourself a gold star if you answered vignoles! To celebrate Missouri’s second-most grown grape, GEORG RIEDEL, the 10th-generation head of Riedel Crystal, flew in from Austria to lead a panel of Missouri wine industry experts in determining the basis for creating the first-ever glass for the vignoles varietal. The event, held last week at Mount Pleasant Estates in Augusta, was hosted by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board.

A Banner Year

R

BY BRITTANY NAY

Among plans on the horizon for 2014, Reliance will be transitioning its current Frontenac bank branch into a new full-service location at the prime corner of Clayton Road and Lindbergh Boulevard in Frontenac next year. And a new fullservice branch also is set for a historic building in The Grove this fall. The two new locations will increase the bank’s St. Louis-area presence to 22, with 24 total branches in Missouri and Florida. Additionally, a new lending office will open later this month at Justine Petersen, a leading economic development center lending to low-income individuals on North Grand Boulevard. “This office will help fulfill our community approach to lending, which includes lending to low- and moderate-income individuals and micro-businesses,” Brouster notes. Continued on page 60

ELIANCE BANK IS DEFYING THE sluggish economy. Following a twoyear turnaround and a $31-million capital campaign led by chairman Tom Brouster, the personal and business banking institution has expanded its leadership team and set its sights on the 2014 opening of two new branches—in Frontenac and The Grove. To help lead its new chapter of expansion, Reliance has brought on two veteran lenders: Rick Sems as president and CEO and Tim Fogerty as executive VP. The new team members bring decades of experience in both large and small markets of the personal and business banking industry, Brouster says. “Moving forward, we have a qualified, seasoned lending team to meet borrowers’ needs.” The new lenders are generating fresh ideas and making connections, Sems adds.

I

n today’s world, we are getting used to instant gratification. Many smart phones, tablets, computers and other hi-tech items change—improve—so fast these days, it sometimes seems like a minor miracle. In 1969, there was sufficient technology in this country to send men to the moon. The computing power of those days was so limited, though, that nobody—and I mean nobody—would want a cell phone, computer or any other devices based solely on that era’s technology. So, what to get this holiday season? The choices are many, prices vary and the technology is breathtaking. I’ve tried to select a couple of good picks from each of the following categories: Wearable Tech, Tablets and e-Readers, Smartphones and Computers (Hybrid Laptop/Tablets).

Tablets and e-Readers

Smartphones

Computers

There are plenty of choices in this category, and you should pick the one that best meets your functional needs. If you are just going to use it for reading books, many of the newer e-readers, like the new Kindle models, are more than adequate. If your business depends on the device, you need to go with a complete tablet; and here, there are lots of choices again.

Speaking of Samsung, when it comes to Smartphones, they have the edge in that department. The S a m s u n g Galaxy S4 (GS4) smartp h o n e ge t s t h e b e s t reviews all around. It comes with an amazing camera and it has a powerful processor that, among other things, can function as a TV remote. It has more storage than most other phones, you can remove the battery, and the 5-inch display has a very high resolution, with high color saturation, contrast and sharply defined edges. Photos and videos really look good. The Galaxy S4 costs approximately $100 when you sign up for a plan.

Here, we are talking hybrid laptop/tablets. Laptop sales are down, tablet sales are up, and hybrids definitely are the wave of the future.

My favorite is the G o o g l e Nexus 7. It can do ‘everything,’ but it might be considered pricey. It starts at $200, but you may want accessories and they are not cheap, so you may end up spending $500 or more. The best part of the device is the clear-as-crystal display. It can function as a phone, camera (although there is some criticism on the camera quality) and much more. One of the accessories is a foldable keyboard for those of us with fat fingers. The price of the keyboard itself runs almost as much as the device. More expensive (and, of course, attached to the Apple name) is the i P a d A i r . Costing approximately $500, it is called the fifth-generation iPad, another example of how quickly technology changes. There are lots of apps to run, it has great performance and a fantastic display. iPad Air comes in four different ‘strengths,’ with the 128GB version of the iPad Air costing more than $800 (the most powerful of the four). Next is the Samsung Galaxy N o t e 1 0 .1 . T h i s runs on the Android sys te m , j u s t l i ke Google Nexus 7. For about $500, it comes with two cameras, and it is light. It also is equipped with a Stylus (S Pen) that is much improved over older models.

Another $100 phone is the HTC One. Also with a 5-inch, HD screen, with even more storage than the GS4, the HTC has some advantages, but also some drawbacks. You cannot expand with extra SD cards or replace the battery. This phone directly competes the GS4 and either choice gives you a great phone.

Fi rs t i n l i n e is the L e n o v o IdeaPad Yoga 2, which costs approximately $ 1 , 0 0 0 . This device allows you to do touchscreen or use a regular keyboard, if you prefer. It comes with a 13.3-inch screen with 3200x1800 resolution, and allows you to fold it 360-degrees. The only drawback is the relatively short battery life. The skinniest and lightest hybrid is the Dell XPS 11. It also is priced at about $1,000 and, like the Lenovo, features a 3 6 0 - d e g re e fo l d . W h i c h o n e yo u pick seems to be a matter i f yo u p re f e r D e l l or IBM-owned Lenovo.

And all the rest... We h a v e only scratched the surface in this ocean of new tablets, smartphones and much more. We have not yet even mentioned cameras, gaming, TVs, home theater, portable audio or car-tech-related products. But, that’s all, folks! Have a great holiday season in high-tech land!

liv ing Holiday Anxiety & Depression

Be Good to Yourself

’T

By Connie Mitchell

is the season to be jolly… unless you’re not. For many people, the holidays are not the most joyous time of the year. In fact, the pressure to be happy all the time only adds to the feelings of isolation, anxiety and sadness that can overcome some people this time of year. One reason the holidays may be a difficult time involves the changing seasons, explains Dr. Duru Sakhrani, a psychiatrist with Mercy St. Louis. “There’s a component called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) that we see right around the holidays,” she says. “And the very intense time of the holidays just increases stress and anxiety. If there is true depression or situation depression, it can be heightened. So the holiday blues can be part of a bigger picture of seasonal affective disorder.” Scientists theorize that SAD has to do with decreased exposure to sunlight during the winter

months. Symptoms include classic depressive traits such as sadness, pessimism, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and changes in sleep patterns. People diagnosed with SAD are often treated with antidepressants and/or light therapy, which involves exposure to simulated sunlight. “People who have comorbid psychiatric issues, such as anxiety, can definitely worsen at this time of year,” Sakhrani says. “And around this time, there is cultural pressure around substances like alcohol, which flows freely at holiday parties. Consumption of these substances can aggravate an already fragile situation.” Although some people tend to dismiss seasonal depression, recognizing what marks true clinical depression is important, says psychiatrist Dr. Pearl Serota. “Clinical depression differs from ‘the blues’ in several important respects: duration of symptoms, severity of symptoms and number of symptoms can distinguish the blues

from a true clinical depression,” she says. Serota adds that in order to meet criteria for a major depression, a person must have five or more symptoms of depression, including changes in sleep (increased or decreased), appetite (increased or decreased), energy level, concentration, decreased mood, and decrease in interests and enjoyment in things that used to bring pleasure. “However, the symptoms that most distinguish the blues from a true depression are Continued on page 60

HEALTH & WELLNESS TYLENOL VS. IBUPROFEN

Use as Directed

F

OR MANY PEOPLE, POPPING A couple—or more than a couple— Tylenol or Advil is a regular routine. These popular over-the-counter pain relievers are touted as safe and effective for everything from headaches to fevers. But do you know what you’re really taking, how it works and what the risks are? First, it’s important to understand that acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not the same as ibuprofen (Advil). “Ibuprofen is in a family of drugs known as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which also includes the over-thecounter drugs aspirin and naproxen,” explains Dr. William Manard, a SLUCare family physician. “These drugs work by reducing inflammation throughout the body. As many forms of pain are due to inflammation, such as arthritis pain or pain due to injuries, these drugs are quite effective in reducing pain.”

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

Acetaminophen, in comparison, works by reducing the body’s sensitivity to pain. “We believe this occurs by reducing the sensitivity to pain signals both within the nerves and within the brain,” Manard says. “It does not reduce inflammation, and therefore acts very differently for pain than ibuprofen and other NSAIDs.” The drugs are not interchangeable and should be chosen based on the type and cause of pain. In addition, the drugs have different potential interactions with other medications and medical conditions, risk, and ways in which they are cleared from the body. “For example, ibuprofen is great for use for arthritis pain, however, it has to be used cautiously in the elderly due to a greater risk of stomach and kidney problems,” Manard says. “Acetaminophen interacts with fewer medications and medical conditions, but it cannot be Continued on page 60

NCE UPON A TIME…JACKIE YOON AND HER 15-YEARold son, Brendan, were looking for a new family pet. Three years before, they had lost their rescued Rottweiler to cancer, and it took about six months of searching before they came across a lab mix named Bunny at Gateway Pet Guardians. Once they found her, Yoon, a VP at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, knew it would be a good fit for her family. “She had a tough life and you could tell she was still a little raggedy,” she explains. “She had hair missing in certain spots, but she had just a great demeanor; and you could tell

$ at some point, she had been someone’s pet. My son fell in love with the dog, who was named Bunny. He said, She doesn’t look like a Bunny. Can we name her Bella? When I asked why, he said, I know if we take her in and give her a lot of love that she’ll be beautiful someday. You never think about these things coming from a 15-year-old boy, but he really fell in love with her and saw that long-term vision.” Since taking in the 1-year-old dog in April, the Yoons have noticed a great transformation in Bella. “When she came to us, you could see her ribs, and she was very meek and shy. Now she looks and acts like a lab: She’s happy and bouncy; and when we come home, her tail is always wagging. It just makes you want to smile.” Yoon says that the responsibility of caring for a pet has been great for Brendan, too, who is an only child. “My son has been able to be part of that process, watching her transformation and helping her grow into something strong and confident. To be able to help foster confidence in a family member, I think that’s great for a teenager.” The Yoons live right next door to Jackie’s brother and his kids, and their Town & Country neighborhood is very pet-friendly, Yoon says. The neighborhood dog park was a great place for Bella to get acclimated to meeting other dogs. “When she meets a dog, her initial reaction is that she gets down really low and checks it out, and if they’re friendly, then her tail starts wagging.” Yoon says she would recommend adopting a rescue to any family looking for a pet, so long as they’re ready for the commitment and patient about finding the right personality. “What I thought was great about Gateway Pet Guardians is that they weren’t pushy. They were very accommodating, really cared about the pets and wanted to make sure they were with the right families. They wanted to make it a long-term fit and were excited about the dogs individually.” Yoon adds, “When you adopt a rescue, you have to have a little faith. They need a lot of love and a little forgiveness, and in the end you get even more out of it than they do.”

Why Felix and Fido Shouldn’t Gather ’Round the Tree

HIS TIME OF YEAR, OUR HOMES are adorned with holiday lighting, poinsettia plants and mistletoe, as well as lots of goodies like brownies and cookies, and perhaps a Christmas tree that umbrellas a score of presents of all sizes and shapes. So, what’s to worry about? As with Thanksgiving, there are any number of food items that can encourage intestinal problems in our dogs and cats, some that can even prove life-threatening. With Christmas, a new crop of potential health issues can arise with our pets’ exposure to many of those objects—in particular, with the tree. Puppies and especially kittens or cats are

Electric cords to light our trees can be very concerning, causing any degree of damage from simple skin burns to actual electrocution through biting and chewing actions. Try to keep cords covered and out of direct access to pets. Other items include yarn, string and other binding objects associated with wrapped presents. In particular, cats will begin to play with loose ends of these twine-like objects, and will actually begin chewing and swallowing them without good reason. The same issue concerns tinsel dangling from Christmas tree branches, a real bait for our Continued on page 60

It’s now possible to have it literally hanging around 24/7, thanks to these new light fixtures that incorporate silver flatware as a decorative element. After years of working in the arts and international development, Ladue native Christina Bryant has launched stfrank.com, a socially responsible e-commerce website specializing in custom-framed handmade textiles from artisans in low- and middle-income countries. A 2002 graduate of MICDS, Bryant shopped the globe to curate the collection, working with artisan organizations, including those reviving lost crafts and utilizing organic materials and environmentally friendly methods. St. Frank carries works from Senegal, Mexico, Laos and Mali, as well as one-of-a-kind suzanis and kilims from Turkey and Uzbekistan. Bold in pattern and color, and rich in heritage and craftsmanship, St. Frank offers unique options in wall décor for cultivated collectors. “I wanted to make the unique and beautiful art I found in isolated communities around the world accessible to people everywhere, while providing talented artisans with a global market for their work,” Bryant explains. As for the company name, she says it pays homage to the company’s hometown, San Francisco, and also celebrates the company’s ancestral namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, son of a wealthy textile merchant, who dedicated his life to the poor. Bryant’s father, Donald Bryant Jr., is the founder/ owner of Bryant Family Vineyard in Napa Valley and the Bryant Group, Inc. of St. Louis. Ken Stuckenschneider is one of St. Louis’ brightest designers with an aesthetic and talent second to none. A top-drawer decorator, he cut his teeth at Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City, where he worked as head of the interior design department, managing some 20 designers and projects around the globe. Prior to that, Stuckenschneider earned a master’s degree in interior design at Pratt Institute in New York and a degree in art history from Washington University in St. Louis. He’s worked on a variety of high-end residential, academic and commercial interiors, ranging from a seaside beachfront property featured on the cover of Architectural Digest to the award-winning renovation of the famous McKim, Mead & White Baker Library at Harvard Business School. We recently caught up with the peripatetic designer and asked him to share a few of his favorite things—those special elements that help transform a house into a warm and welcoming home. • Home Fragrance: Myrrhe candles from Diptyque Paris. This wonderful incense fragrance reminds me of the rituals of the Roman Catholic Mass and reminds me that the making of a home is a special act to be cherished while nurturing the soul. • Lighting: Swing-arm light fixtures from Ann Morris Antiques in New York. I have these specially made for my clients in unlaquered brass, which then tarnishes and turns over time, acquiring a marvelous real patina reflecting the glow of beautiful incandescent light. • Upholstery: Without a doubt, the Bridgewater down-filled sofas I have made by Jonas, upholsterers to the trade in New York City. It never ceases to amaze me how many people have several comfortable European cars in their garage—and yet their sofas are filled with polyester and very uncomfortable! Well, they need to relax on one of my sofas. I have one at my Diptyque Myrrhe candle

country house and nap there on the weekends— always sharing it with the dog, of course! • Dining Details: Round tables in round rooms. Very elegant and special. • Floor Covering: I have great floor cloths specially made in a church basement where we sew together pieces of Middle Eastern tent canvas and create the most durable and chic architectural patterns. • Wall Covering: Hand-painted gilded wall panels from Gracie in New York. They create extraordinary ambience. • China: I love using unique, vintage patterns from China Finders here in St. Louis on Cherokee Street. I recently purchased a set in the vintage 1960s Lenox pattern called Starlight that is wonderfully detailed. • Home Accessories: A loving couple, happy kids, a tail-wagging dog and a fluffy fat cat.

“My favorite thing of all is designing houses where everything is used and lived in,” Stuckenschneider concludes. “Everything is real—no artificial flowers, no fake fruit, no roped-off rooms. A friend of mine once came to the house I grew up in and said, I love coming to your house because there are no lines that cannot be crossed. My parents always had an extraordinarily comfortable home, and I have been recreating those rooms all around the world ever since.”

OMAHA’S BOYS TOWN

The Other Christmas Story

M

ENTION BOYS TOWN AND, chances are, someone will reply, Oh yes, that 1930s movie about the priest . Didn’t Spencer Tracy win the Academy Award for best actor that year? The answer, of course, is yes. But there’s so much more to the story. In 1917, amid the tumultuous aftermath of the first World War, a tall, lanky young priest living

BY JUDY CROWELL

in Omaha saw homeless boys in trouble and made a vow to dedicate his life to these aimless youngsters. A $90 loan and a drafty Victorian mansion for rent were the beginnings of Boys Town. “There are no bad boys,” Fr. Edward Flanagan once said. “There is only bad environment, bad training, bad example, bad thinking.” And for the next 30 years, he battled the courts, the community, the odds—and, often, the boys themselves— to keep his dream alive. In spite of a shoestring budget, the front door

was always open, and boys continued to come for shelter and food, the feel of a family, and education, love, patience and understanding. In 1921, a ‘miraculous’ real estate deal was concluded, bringing a 160-acre farm, a house and several barns together for the future of Boys Town. Omaha citizens were actively supportive and involved, raising funds to build a school, dormitory, gym and workshop. Financial struggles were unceasing, but Fr. Flanagan met each one with dignity, tenacity and

inventiveness, including the creation of the famed Boys Town Choir. He remained a ‘father’ to all his boys, causing many concerns that his work would die with him. Not this Fr. Flanagan. “The work will continue, you see, whether I am there or not, because it is God’s work, not mine,” he often said. And continue it has, expanding to 14 states and the District of Columbia, serving thousands and thousands of boys and now girls since its humble beginnings. Fr. Flanagan’s first real home has been restored and is open to the public. Graduates return to reminisce over Christmases celebrated with paper ornaments in the dining room, handmade quilts in the dormitory rooms and meals set at the table with Irish linen and red candles. All this from a $90 donation, one man who opened his heart and door to all burdened children, and a giving Nebraska community. The ‘flyover’ city of Omaha actually has much to offer. Hiltons, Hamptons and Holidays abound— all predictably nice, especially the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel downtown. But skip down the alphabet for a stylish stay at the Magnolia Hotel, a neo-classical 1920s building with fireplaces in the rooms. Over Thanksgiving, this birthplace of Warren Buffet and TV dinners flips a switch in Old Town to begin holiday celebrations of ice-skating, carolers, dancing Santas at the Symphony, and the lighting of a Christmas tree at Union Station, home to the Durham Museum. Santa and Mrs. Claus greet young and old alike in this cherished tradition, begun in 1930 when Union Pacific would decorate a large evergreen for Union Station travelers. unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world* JUSTIN BIEBER

The Biebs fancies himself quite the graffiti artist these days, becoming known for leaving a spray-painted calling card behind as he tours the world. Unfortunately, his artwork on an Australian hotel was not only unwelcome, it also was illegal. The city’s mayor has given Bieber a choice: He can scrub the graffiti clean or perform at his annual Christmas party. It seems like a harmless ultimatum. Although insisting that Justin sing swaddled in a manger for the live nativity may be pushing it.

ONE DIRECTION The boy band du jour was mobbed at New York’s JFK airport last week as they arrived for their appearance on SNL this weekend. The band caused a stampede as travelers spotted them. People were trampled in the pandemonium. Hey, don’t look at me. I was squatting in a bush, under a tarp, across the road from the taxi line. Fifty yards is 50 yards.

JOE JONAS The former teen idol was spotted running in West Hollywood sporting a conspicuous mustache. The one-time heartthrob is battling impending obscurity by releasing a salacious tell-all about his Disney-child-star past. After the book signing, Jonas had a ‘quiet’ lunch at a paparazzi-strewn hotspot, and then went for a don’t-notice-me run with his new I’m-in-disguise facial hair. Presumably, later in the day, he’d choose between ‘leaking’ a sex tape and announcing a dependency on prescription pain medication.

KANYE WEST AND KIM KARDASHIAN The singer and his vapid bride-to-be have outdone themselves. They have decided to have their wedding at the Palace of Versailles. In an unwitting tribute to their unabashed materialism, Kanye and Kim feel the opulence and history of the palace reflects their own luxury lifestyle. What are the chances their story will end the same way it did for the last two infamous and undeservedly rich people who lived at Versailles…?

Oh, Christmas Tree IT’S A CHRISTMAS TRADITION AS OLD AS Saint Nick Gather the children, bundle them thick Everyone in the car with a rather swift kick It is time for the ceremonial Christmas tree pick. I have a niggling feeling, but I do not dwell Despite early signs my plan’s going to hell Smile for the camera, by the next darn clock bell We will look like a portrait of Norman Rockwell.

TANGENTIAL THINKER

I plaster a smile as Punch starts to bicker Whiny is coughing, now he’s feeling sicker Cranky is beaming, new hope starts to flicker Then I see it’s a text, did those people bring liquor?

Just pick out a tree, to love it is learnable Spinning them round though no difference discernable Assessing each one using language that’s questionable In front of young families with children impressionable.

Straighten up now, gosh darn it, have fun I insist Smell the pine, sip hot cocoa, iPhone urges resist, If you’ll just not make waves, perhaps even assist I can cross this darn trip off my Christmas blacklist.

Finally I just choose one, a kindly dictator Get the thing on the car before the hour gets later We look cheery and buoyant to any spectator At least that’s my impression and I’m the narrator.

“Punch pulled my hair, and then poked at my eyeball!” Cranky fake-cries with a drama-queen pratfall The dog’s off the leash and Whiny is AWOL And I’m Chicken Little awaiting the sky fall.

So it’s done we got through it, it wasn’t all loathsome The tree on the car roof, the family so handsome We laugh as the dog hops in, sticky with balsam Family Christmas tree shopping, it’s rather quite wholesome.

Out of the Furnace FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN

BY MARK BRETZ

THE STORY

S

EEING THIS FILM’S premise, one can’t help but wonder what would have happened had filmmakers cast Christian Bale as the protagonist in every Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson movie. On its face, the movie’s plot doesn’t stray too far from your basic vengeance action flick: a wrong man goes up against a seemingly unstoppable force of evil to rescue/avenge his loved ones. This movie is a testament to what an incredible cast can do for a script. Russell Baze (Bale) is a good man with incredibly bad luck. When his brother, Rodney (Casey Affleck), returns from a tour of duty in Iraq and gets mixed up with a violent criminal element, he suddenly disappears. When local law enforcement will not help, Russell is forced to head into the belly of the beast to find his brother. Once there, he must confront the ominous Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson). Honestly, I don’t mind 90% of white-knuckle anxiety in a movie as long as the payoff is worth it. In this case, it seems the filmmakers wanted to avoid the formulaic action flick plot and as a result, the film fizzles. The acting is incredible—the cast boasts two Oscar winners and three nominees; and visually, the film is bleak and stirring. In the end though, the story is a lot of build-up to a forgettable finish.

Mollie Ralston is putting the finishing touches on her new guest lodge, Monkswell Manor, with the assistance of her dutiful husband of one year, Giles. Their place is situated about 30 miles from London, where a grisly murder has been reported. A radio report describes the killer as wearing a dark coat, light scarf and soft felt hat, all of which happen to match Giles’ outdoor attire. As the guests arrive at Monkswell Manor, it becomes apparent that all of them are dressed in dark coats, white scarves and soft felt hats in the fierce snowstorm outside. A young police officer, Detective Sgt. Trotter, also arrives, saying he’s been dispatched because there is suspicion that another murder will be committed soon, and at Monkswell Manor, specifically. Wouldn’t you know it? Someone at the lodge is indeed the victim of foul play. Who might the killer be?

HIGHLIGHTS Dame Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is the longest-running play in history, racking up more than 25,000 performances since its opening. In the tradition of the famed whodunit’s production, audience members are asked at the show’s conclusion not to reveal the identity of the murderer. What can be mentioned, however, is how thoroughly delightful The Rep’s holiday rendition is, with director Paul Mason Barnes providing a hearty evening of entertainment.

COMPANY: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis VENUE: Browning Mainstage, Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road DATES: Through Dec. 29 TICKETS: $20-$76; 968-4925 or repstl.org RATING: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews. com.

The players in this piece appear to be having as much fun as the audience. Darrie Lawrence is properly haughty and unpleasant as the prim magistrate, Mrs. Boyle; while Ellen Adair is ideal as the sweet and earnest Mollie, who brings a troubled history to her marriage and her new occupation. William Connell conveys Giles as a faithful husband who might just be too slick to be what he seems. As Christopher, Sean Mellott revels in the opportunity to cackle and cavort in unseemly fashion befitting the bizarre young architect. Michael James Reed fully embodies the stiff-upper-lip demeanor of the middle-aged Major Metcalf, while Tarah Flanagan keeps her cards close to her vest as the mysterious Miss Casewell. Larry Paulsen delights as the flamboyant Paravicini. And as Detective Sgt. Trotter, Christian Pedersen carries himself as you’d expect an intrepid young policeman to be while investigating a terrible crime. The Mousetrap isn’t Shakespeare or Miller or Williams. It is, though, a ‘ripping yarn’ that is jolly good entertainment for the holiday season. Enjoy the proceedings, but don’t give away the ending.

MOUSETRAP PHOTO BY JERRY NAUNHEIM JR.

RATING: 6 out of 10

Delivery Man Vince Vaughn stars in yet another mediocre sell-out; this time, playing an average Joe, who, through sperm donations, has fathered hundreds of children. It’s a 5.

glass, felt and wood. “Some of our ceramic forms have really gone all across the board, from the classic to the eroded to the crooked to the animal,” Kirkland says. Kirkland says the Craft Alliance teapot exhibition is always well-received by the public, and has become a wonderful tradition. “[A teapot] symbolizes something: It’s soothing, and there is something calming about it from the viewer’s perspective.” The 14th biennial exhibit will feature more than 50 artists, including 26 new to Craft Alliance. “I find it really interesting that makers of all kinds of media gravitate to the form,” Kirkland says. “Whenever I ask the maker about it, they say it’s such a classic form, it has so many challenges.” The exhibit will open Friday, Jan. 10, at the Delmar Loop Craft Alliance with a special artists’ reception. Fif-TEA runs through March 23.

Fif-TEA, Craft Alliance’s 14th biennial teapot exhibition, opens in January and will be part of the organization’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration. To mark the milestone anniversary, the artists were asked to submit more than just the standard pot. “This year, we’re asking all of the artists to submit a cup with the teapot,” says director of exhibitions Stefanie Kirkland, noting some artists even asked if they could submit an entire set. “We want to create that fun little twist.” Once all pieces are on display, she says the space will be wallto-wall teapots—but each piece will be properly highlighted, to keep them from competing with one another. Kirkland has been with Craft Alliance some eight-plus years, and she says she is always fascinated with the new and unexpected teapots. Oceano Bistro

Catch of the Day

BY SIDNEY LEWIS

BEING LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE country and all, St. Louis isn’t exactly known as a seafood mecca. But there are a handful of quality places around town where creating culinary delights with the ocean’s bounty is what they do best. At the top of this list is Oceano Bistro in Clayton. While there are a few ‘turf’ dishes on the menu, like the Umami Kobe Sliders, the Grilled Beef Tenderloin and the Pan Roasted Half Chicken, seafood of all types definitely reigns at Oceano, from Missouri Rainbow Trout to a cavalcade of shellfish, prepared in a multitude of classic ways. The last time we sat down at Oceano, we plowed through a good cross-section of all of them, starting with the traditional steamy, creamy goodness of the New England Seafood Chowder ($10) and a bowlful of Pan Roasted Freshwater Prawns ($13), which came with a saffron-vegetable relish and was accented with a rich shellfish butter and garlic aioli. Both of these dishes were simple but perfectly executed and supremely flavorful. The Oceano website states the restaurant is interested in exploring classic recipes and techniques as opposed to creating culinary fusions, and these two dishes are prime examples of that ethic. To follow up, two distinctly different but equally delicious entrees, the Sauteed Warm Water Sea Bass ($26) and the Lobster Risotto ($19). The sea bass was flaky and lightly crusted

with herbs, perched atop a risotto flavored with sweet corn and asparagus. The flavor of the risotto, augmented with a touch of lemon for a bit of citrus tang, was a relatively light contrast to the somewhat heavy fish. The lobster, on the other hand, was full-on decadence, a rich concoction of melted leek, roasted garlic and Parmesan cheese, along with the requisite sweet chunks of lobster and tender risotto. The dish was built upon a glorious pool of stunning green herb-infused olive oil that made for an eye-popping plating. While the sea bass and lobster were obviously the focal point of these dishes, it was interesting to see the differences in the risottos used in each. Sometimes when a menu lists the same ingredient in several dishes, the assumption often is that it’s being used in the same way. Not so in these two entrees: While basically the same at the core, both risottos were miles apart in flavor, a good example of what a creative kitchen can do with a simple ingredient. Both entrees were designated as being made without gluten; and in fact, the Oceano menu has a large number of offerings that don’t include gluten, and many items designated as ‘heart-healthy.’ 44 North Brentwood Blvd., 721-9400, oceanobistro.com

LN COOKS

A Tailgating Treat

BY JOHN JOHNSON

QUESADILLA BURGERS (SERVES 4)

A: The Gator Ribs last year were awesome! They were dry-rubbed and slow-cooked with bacon, and then smoked over apple and pecan wood for that great smoky flavor. This year, I am pulling flavors from a little farther south of Cajun country. I’ve combined two of my favorite sports foods into one caliente masterpiece that would make any tailgater drool for more!

INGREDIENTS: 4 8-oz. ground chuck burgers 4 12-inch flour tortillas 4 4-oz. grilled chicken breast, julienned 12 oz. pepperjack cheese, shredded ½ white onion, julienned 1 red pepper, julienned 1 green pepper, julienned 1 3-oz. can pureed chipotle peppers ½ t sea salt ¼ t black pepper 2 oz. rapeseed or vegetable oil For Garnish: 2 c green cabbage, shredded 1 jalapeño pepper, sliced 8 T roasted salsa 4 T sour cream 4 T guacamole 2 fresh limes, quartered 1 red onion, julienned and pickled (see directions) ½ c lime juice ⅛ t sea salt

DIRECTIONS: First, we are going to make the pickled red onions. Take your julienned red onions and blanch them in boiling water for 10 seconds. Place in bowl and pour chilled lime juice over the onion and add salt. Cover and chill overnight for best results. To make the burgers, start by grilling burgers to medium doneness. Sauté onions and peppers until tender. Heat a large 14-inch pan to medium heat. For each burger, add a little oil to coat the bottom of the pan and place the tortilla into the pan. While it is browning, spread a tablespoon of the pureed chipotle pepper on the tortilla, and add one-fourth of the following ingredients: chicken, cheese, sautéed onion and peppers. Now place the cooked burger in the center of the tortilla. Fold the edge of the tortilla to the center of the burger, working your way around until the burger is completely covered. It should form a round circle around the burger. Turn the quesadilla over to brown on the other side and this will seal the edges together. Remove from pan and place on plate. Top with shredded green cabbage and pickled onions. Garnish with roasted salsa, sour cream, guacamole and a squeeze of lime.

Q: Chef, with playoff season almost here, I am looking for a great tailgate item that will top all the other tailgaters around me. Burger and brats, ribs and BBQ are fine, but I am looking for something a little uncommon. I heard about your Gator Ribs for the Florida and Mizzou game last year and just had to come up and try them. Touchdown! What’s in your bag for this season?

Holiday Anxiety & Depression continued from page 32 feelings of worthlessness, helplessness and hopelessness, as well as preoccupation with death and suicidal thoughts.” Both Serota and Sakhrani emphasize that these symptoms should not be ignored. “Everyone has occasional down days or ‘the blues,’ but if symptoms of (true depression) persist for more than a couple of weeks, it is important to seek help from a mental health p ra c t i t i o n e r,” Serota says. Strategies to avo i d h o l i day depression largely involve m a i n ta i ning routine a n d se l f- ca re . Fo r i n s t a n c e , Sakhrani advises special attention to c o n t i n u i n g healthy eating and regular exercise routines. Physical activity is known to help improve mood and enhance immunity, helping to avoid seasonal illnesses that can cause schedule upsets during the holidays. She also stresses the importance of sleep, pointing out the benefits of maintaining regular sleep and wake cycles. Relax, be good to yourself, and don’t force yourself into the ‘holiday spirit.’ Take time to enjoy little things that bring pleasure, and get help if you can’t shake the holiday blues.

Pet Talk continued from page 36

The bank’s banner year is rounding out with $6.5 million in record earnings, and increases of $21 million in deposits and $49 million in total assets. In addition, the institution’s loans have grown 13 percent and it has experienced 22 consecutive months of no loans more than 30 days delinquent. Reliance’s leadership credits its 2013 success to its philosophy of providing excellent customer service to quality borrowers, as well as its knowledgeable and personable staff. “Community banking is a people-oriented business,” says Allan Ivie, president and CEO of the bank’s holding company, Reliance Bancshares. “We believe our team stacks up to that of any other local bank—big or small.” Part of the bank’s commitment to the community also extends to volunteer work on local nonprofit boards, says vice-chairman Gaines Dittrich. For instance, Brouster will be on the board of City Academy, Ivie works with Beyond Housing, Dittrich helps Angels’ Arms, and Sems serves Operation Food Search. As 2013 comes to a close, Brouster is reflecting proudly on Reliance’s growth amid the city’s competitive banking industry. “We’re excited about our progress, and we’re excited about our prospects moving forward.”

predatory cats, who love the motion, as well as the reflectivity of this item. As the cat swallows these items, some of them move slowly along the intestinal tract, which can cause the intestines to ‘bunch up.’ Soon, the intestines have tightened up; and as their contractility persists, they can actually scissor through the lining, eventually rupturing and allowing dangerous intestinal bacteria and debris to fall free into the abdominal cavity. A life-threatening condition called peritonitis can ensue; and nary an evening passes at the emergency clinic without a very sick cat entering in need of immediate and significantly dangerous surgical exploration and more. And remember that any plastic or glass ornament can break, exposing pets to lacerations, or—if ingested—may impose serious medical and surgical needs. Many people adorn their Christmas trees with chocolate candy, some of which can be toxic to our family pets. Keep such items well away from Fido and Felix. Tylenol vs. IbuprofeN continued from page 33 used in people with liver problems due to its potential toxicity.” Despite both drugs’ advertising and pervasive use, they still carry inherent risks and should be treated with the same respect as other drugs, adds Chris Grass, a clinical pharmacist at SSM DePaul Health Center. “It is extremely important for consumers to read the label and follow the dosing recommendations on the package,” Grass says. “On occasion, a physician may recommend a higher dose than is on the label, but patients should never exceed the package recommended dose without advice from their physician.” Both medications can cause stomach irritation and ulcers, kidney problems and liver damage. “Consumption of alcohol, along with acetaminophen, can result in toxicity, and in extreme cases, liver failure and death,” Grass says. “Long-term, unmonitored use of ibuprofen can cause kidney failure and high blood pressure.” In fact, potential liver problems are the major concern for people who take these drugs over long periods of time without proper monitoring. “If you are on either of these medications long-term, the physician would need to be aware so they could order the necessary liver function tests, etc., on a regular basis,” says Rich Johnson, pharmacy manager for the SSM Rx Express Pharmacy. “If the liver function decreases enough, it would warrant the discontinuation of these medications.” However, both drugs may be used for long periods of time under a physician’s direction. “Ibuprofen and acetaminophen have both been available for a long time,” Manard notes. “We have decades of data on their safe use, and both drugs, when used properly, are very safe.”

Finally, remember that animals will explore and chew at plants, especially new ones. Poinsettias and mistletoe can both be irritating, and—if ingested in large amounts— can prove very toxic.
