he holidays are a magical time for everyone, regardless of age. Throughout the season, The Gatesworth celebrates by hosting special events like Holiday Affair, Hanukkah, Christmas Eve and Christmas dinners and a New Year’s Eve celebration. The community’s executive chef Brian Hardy and his culinary team work hard to create experiences worth savoring. From formal dining to home delivery and special events like buffets and holiday celebrations, the dining choices at The Gatesworth are plentiful – and the food is always exceptional. “At The Gatesworth, I literally get to cook for some of the best people every single day,” Hardy says. “It’s amazing to know the residents and their families and to take and prepare their recipes for them. Making the residents and their guests happy is really what I enjoy the most.”

Hardy has worked at The Gatesworth for 23 years and oversees the entire food service operation, from the front of the house – dining room managers, servers, hosts and bartenders – all the way back to the kitchen staff, sous chefs and cooks. Hardy adds that The Gatesworth has also become known as a premier training ground for young chefs in St. Louis. Hardy himself has also won the Dr. L.J. Minor Chef Professionalism Award in 2020, a sought-after designation nationally awarded to the chef who, per the American Culinary Federation, “exemplifies the highest standard of professionalism through certification, continuing education and training, culinary competitions and community involvement.” “Receiving the award was a big honor,” he says. “It represents a chef ’s ability to affect the community positively, to affect the staff and cooks and to train and mentor apprentices. That’s a big deal for me.” And Hardy definitely has a positive impact on The Gatesworth – residents regularly rave to their friends and family about how incredible the food and service are in the community. “The food is outstanding,” resident Oscar Goldberg says. “People may not believe me, but I have never had a bad meal at The Gatesworth. Never. Every meal I have had, even if it’s just a dessert – it’s always good. Living at The Gatesworth has been beyond my expectations.” The Gatesworth even offers a special service called From Our House to Yours, where residents spending the holidays offsite can pick up sides and full meals to go from The Gatesworth kitchen, including fresh-baked pies and turkey dinners complete with all the trimmings. “We do a lot of charity work, too,” Hardy adds. “We participate in different fundraisers around town. We really give a lot back to the community, not only as The Gatesworth, but as a culinary staff.” Above all, what Hardy loves most about The Gatesworth is his ability to give back to the St. Louis community and residents at The Gatesworth. By getting to know residents and their tastes, he can figure out how to create foods they’ll love to eat while utilizing the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. “When you get to know people, it makes cooking for them so much better because there’s such a warm feeling knowing they care so much about you,” Hardy says. “All the residents I have been blessed to know over the years have been so great. I have nothing but great things to say about all of them.” Hardy concludes that The Gatesworth feels like family and that he, alongside the rest of The Gatesworth’s dedicated staff, is ready to give residents, their families and guests the most magical holiday experiences. HEALTH NOTES

ALL ABOUT ADAPTOGENS By Connie Mitchell

S

tressed and exhausted from the holidays? Feeling cranky and run down as winter digs in its heels? You’re not alone. Returning to healthy habits – adequate sleep, regular exercise, meditation, healthy foods – after all the bustle and treats of the last few weeks is a tonic, and some people incorporate adaptogens into their diet to feel more balanced. Adaptogens are herbs and mushrooms sold in various forms that are promoted for helping the body return to “homeostasis,” or balance, after periods of acute or chronic stress. Among the more popular adaptogens are ashwagandha, tulsi (holy basil), astragalus, ginseng and rhodiola. But are adaptogens really as helpful as manufacturers claim? “A growing body of evidence supports that adaptogens may help regulate the body in different ways, such as improving mood, balancing hormones or supporting the immune system,” says Whitney Linsenmeyer, assistant professor of

12

December 15, 2023 | LadueNews.com

nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. But while data points to some benefits, Linsenmeyer notes that adaptogens are not considered integral to a healthy diet or lifestyle because they do not provide essential nutrients like vegetables, fruits and whole grains do. “Scientists believe that adaptogens impact the body’s hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, which is part of the body’s stress response,” she says. The axis acts as a sort of highway for stress hormones, released by adrenal glands, to enter the circulation. Stressors, real or imagined, activate the axis and create a cascade of hormonal changes that prepare us to fight or flee. When the HPA axis is stimulated too much, it takes a toll on mental and physical health. Adaptogens are said to help bring this stress response system back to a healthier balance. Before taking adaptogens, Linsenmeyer recommends considering several aspects. “First, adaptogens fall under the umbrella of dietary supplements, which are not regulated by the

Food and Drug Administration and may contain unlisted substances,” she says. “When shopping for any dietary supplement, consumers should seek out those that have been verified by a third party, such those with a USP or NSF label.” Linsenmeyer notes that adaptogens may have side effects, just like other medications. She recommends checking the websites for the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements or National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health for more information. “Adaptogens may interact with other medications you may be taking. Before using any dietary supplement, it is important to talk to your doctor first,” Linsenmeyer says. “Your primarycare physician can help you identify what type of adaptogen to try and at what dose.” Saint Louis University Doisy College of Health Sciences, 314-977-2570, slu.edu/doisy Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eatright.org

is a picture of hope.

Just before her second birthday, Eleanor was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes, a bone marrow disorder that quickly led to acute myeloid leukemia. Her family went straight to Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s, where Eleanor’s care team jumped into action. While she faced multiple rounds of treatment, Eleanor relied on donor-funded programs like art, music and dance movement therapies to keep smiling during hard days. A year later, she was finally able to ring the bell and celebrate being officially cancer free. Today, Eleanor is a spirited 4-year-old — a picture of hope. A STORIED HISTORY

Wright at Home Story and photos by Emily Standlee

P

erhaps best known for his Fallingwater house in southwest Pennsylvania, Frank Lloyd Wright is synonymous with Midwest architecture and the Prairie School movement. He designed more than 1,000 structures in his 70-year career, and out of seven buildings in Missouri, two of his houses are in St. Louis. The one near Kirkwood, Mo., is one of those homes that’s striking in its quiet singularity. The Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park, finished in the 1950s, is a multidimensional entity. FLWHEP is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit and works in partnership with St. Louis County Parks to educate the public on Wright’s legacy. The home’s wooded grounds feel somewhat sacred: On the drive up, acres of old forest roll back to reveal a clearing where Wright’s Usonian-style house sits serenely. “These are called Usonian homes because every design element is efficient and serves a purpose,” says Kathryn Feldt, executive director for FLWHEP. Besides organizing events that benefit the house’s preservation, Feldt gives tours to student groups and curious Wright fans from all over the world. Her small team focuses on Wright while also introducing visitors to the lives of Russell and Ruth Goetz Kraus, the house’s original owners. Wright designed the home specifically for the couple after Russell sent him a letter.

14

DECEMBER 15, 2023 | LadueNews.com

“At that time, Wright was designing the Guggenheim – he was doing some amazing things,” Feldt explains. “But he was committed to the concept of middle-class Americans having access to beautiful homes.” After the 1,900-square-foot house was built, the Krauses lived there for 40 years and had a hand in much of the design – down to the fabric choices, exquisite stained glass (created by Russell) and Wright-designed furniture. The house itself took a decade to build, with Wright and the Krauses agreeing on a design focused on the geometry of a parallelogram. As such, the house’s two beds are on an angle, the floor tiles are parallelograms, and several triangular skylights peek through the roof. “This house has so much personality,” Feldt says. “Part of the organic architecture concept is to integrate the vitality and seasonality of what’s going on outside, inside. An overcast day brings in that moody and sometimes comforting attitude. Wright wanted to remove anything that would prevent you from bringing the natural environment inside.” Wright’s Usonian homes had to be affordable – the Krauses had a budget of $35,000 in the 1950s, though the project ultimately cost more – and they often included the same aesthetic elements: garden terraces; flat roofs and cantilevered overhangs; natural light; and the use of nearby materials. Details like deep horizontal

lines in the fireplace and long bookshelves in the hallway keep the eye moving on a familiar level. There is no basement or attic, and the house – built of tidewater red cypress wood, concrete and brick – is kept warm using radiant-floor heating. For the amount of work, control and innovation that went into it, the house dazzles in its effortlessness. But it’s not just a Frank Lloyd Wright house. As Feldt puts it, “Russell and Ruth were more than that couple who [helped design] this house – they lived creative, impressive lives. In the world of preservation, it’s important that you’re guided by the period of significance. And for us, that’s the time in which the Krauses lived here.” Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park, 120 N. Ballas Road, St. Louis, 314-822-8359, ebsworthpark.org

Help preserve the house in Ebsworth Park

Anyone who becomes a member or donates to FLWHEP by the end of 2023 is entered into a raffle to win a private “Wright + Wine” event at the house. Memberships start at $25 and give members access to special events, free tours, a community of architecture enthusiasts and more. See details at ebsworthpark.org.

FAMILY FIRST

Building Generational Wealth T By Drew Gieseke

here’s no single path for families to take regarding long-term wealth planning. Yet one of the more common ways people can set up their children and grandchildren for success is by using a custodial Roth IRA. These investment vehicles help children who earn income contribute toward their retirement and build a reliable future. “Getting kids started with saving and investing early is a good way to instill financial values that lead to good outcomes when they become adults,” says Plaza Advisory Group wealth manager Whitey Holt. “A custodial Roth is one investment vehicle (among many) that can help accomplish that.” A custodial Roth IRA is a tax-free account held by a custodian – often a parent or guardian – for a minor who has a job. Kids can contribute a portion of their earnings toward this account, and when a child reaches adulthood – either 18 or 21 years old depending on the state – the

16

DECEMBER 15, 2023 | LadueNews.com

account is converted to a regular Roth IRA. Once a child becomes an adult, they also gain total control over the account and investments. As with many tax-advantaged savings vehicles, there are limitations to custodial Roth IRAs. For example, kids must be employed in order to open and contribute to a custodial Roth IRA. And when they do open one, kids can only contribute $7,000 per year in 2024. This means that even if a child earns more than this amount from mowing lawns, bagging at a grocery store, scooping ice cream at the local shop or other part-time jobs, they’re only legally allowed to deposit $7,000 into their custodial Roth IRA. The contribution limits are typically adjusted annually to account for inflation and changes in the economy. “The dollar amounts are usually small,” Holt says. “I generally recommend aggressively investing contributions and to not overly complicate the investments you choose.” Custodial Roth IRAs aren’t the only kind of early investment accounts available to parents who want to help their kids begin saving early

in life. A popular option is 529 plans, which are also known as qualified tuition plans. Put most simply, 529 plans act as education savings tools that help account holders save for higher education expenses like tuition, fees, and room and board. Another common savings opportunity relates to the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act. According to Investopedia, this law permits minors to “receive gifts without the aid of a guardian or trustee” including money and types of property like real estate and fine art. As with custodial Roth IRAs, the gift giver or an appointed custodian can manage a minor’s account until they reach adulthood. Regardless of the path parents and guardians choose for their kids, Holt says the best way people can get started is by checking with the investment firm they currently work with to learn more about their options. “Parents should make sure their own financial situation is very strong before helping a kid set up and fund this type of account.”

OZ can get kids to do things a therapist can try for weeks to get them to do, but they’re not inspired to because they’re by themselves. It’s really using that power of modeling and socialization to help move forward their physical progress as well as their developmental progress. - Dr. Nick Holekamp

3-year-old plays with her friends while developing her motor and cognitive skills in a brightly colored classroom. It’s preschool, but it’s not. This is OZ, the Optimization Zone at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in Maryland Heights, Mo., and the children here don’t bring backpacks and lunchboxes – they bring respirators, IV drips and wheelchairs. OZ is the brainchild of Dr. Nick Holekamp, vice president and chief medical officer at Ranken Jordan, and a team of pediatric specialists. The concept took shape when Holekamp and his team wanted to look at why young children needing prolonged hospital care are more at risk of falling behind their peers developmentally and why they spend hours awake in bed without the company of other kids. “OZ was the silver lining [in] the study we did to establish a baseline and assess our Care Beyond the Bedside model,” Holekamp says. “For many years, I claimed that we get kids up and out of bed more than just about anywhere else other than home. We decided to measure that, and it turned into the study we published in the journal Child in September. The good news was that, yes, we get kids out a lot – out of their bed about five hours a day and out of the room about two hours a day. The message we were less excited about was that our kids spend more than four hours a day awake in bed.” Holekamp was determined to create more opportunities for Ranken Jordan’s youngest patients to have structured, social play and developmental stimulation. Without it, he says children suffer neurodevelopmental limitations that add insult to the already significant injury of conditions requiring longterm hospitalization. Although a handful of hospitals like Ranken Jordan exist across the nation, a program like OZ is new and unique to the Midwest. To allow the children to attend OZ safely, each patient receives one-on-one care from an adult provider who is either a physical or occupational therapist or a child life specialist. A manager who specializes in early childhood education oversees the program with the help of an assistant instructor. Ranken Jordan customized its model to fit the needs of the patients and staff, and it continues to develop. “As a pediatrician, I think it’s a universal truth that play is the important work of childhood. That’s how you grow and get stronger and socialize and learn about the world. And there’s very little play in a typical hospital setting,” Holekamp says. He is working to share the OZ model with other pediatric hospitals so

that thousands of children with serious health conditions requiring inpatient care receive many of the same opportunities and benefits as their healthy peers. Since opening in February 2022, about 120 children have participated in the OZ program. Of the average of 50 inpatients at Ranken Jordan, about half are ages 5 and younger. “We try to get every OZ-eligible child to OZ as often as possible,” Holekamp says. OZ caters to preschool-aged children. Once a child is eligible for Kindergarten, they can receive public school services, such as homebound tutors. Ranken Jordan also provides school-age children with recreational therapies in individual and group settings and offers special programs, such as magic shows, musical performances and special guests who bring traveling exhibits and specimens from the Missouri Botanical Garden and other area attractions. When young inpatients interact with children their age, it encourages them to develop new skills like walking, Holekamp says. “OZ can get kids to do things a therapist can try for weeks to get them to do, but they’re not inspired to because they’re by themselves. It’s really using that power of modeling and socialization to help move forward their physical progress as well as their developmental progress.” Holekamp is now interested in proving OZ’s benefits with data that uses a scale to measure small increments of developmental progress. “If we can tally up real progress in that way and show that kids make gains faster than they would either without OZ or just sitting in conventional hospitals, then we can prove it’s a measurable benefit.” With help from donors, Holekamp hopes OZ can expand further through a dedicated space remodeled from a defunct nursing station. “The next project will be to turn the temporary partitions that separate OZ from therapy space into physical walls with more formal classroom-like spaces,” he says. “Until then, the kids drive their nurses crazy because they always want to be out playing in OZ. And that’s a good problem to have.” Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, 11365 Dorsett Road, Maryland Heights, 314-872-6400, rankenjordan.org LadueNews.com | DECEMBER 15, 2023

PEAK SEASON FOR POMEGRANATES By Pat Raven, Ph.D. and Julie Hess

O

ne of the most beautiful fruits for decorating the holiday table is a red, ripe pomegranate. With colorful and durable skin, these fruits may stay at room temperature for a few weeks with without losing quality. Mixed with grapes and green apples, they make a festive, easy-to-assemble centerpiece. Afterward, you may open them to extract the juicy arils and plump sacks of sweet-tart flavor that surround the seeds, and then sprinkle these little gems on salads or sliced citrus fruits for an inviting winter meal. The arils may also be crushed to yield their delectable liquid to use as a base for an elegant salad dressing, a fabulous breakfast beverage or a special cocktail secret ingredient. for Rosé Sangria. No matter how you consume it, this vitamin- and antioxidant-rich fruit is an excellent addition to your diet. As a Southern girl, I grew up harvesting pomegranates from a neighbor’s side garden. Grown as a large shrub or pruned into a small tree, pomegranates traditionally favor hot summers and were not hardy in St. Louis when I moved here more than 20 years ago. With the warming winters from climate change and the selection of more hardy varieties from Turkmenistan and Central Asia, we may now grow in-the-ground-hardy plants in addition to the garage-protected pots of prior years. “Afganski,” with soft seeds for eating whole, and “Russian 26,” a hard-seeded juicer, should be fully hardy here. “Sirenevyi,” with elegant blush-colored fruits, is marginally hardy and will thrive in a protected location like a courtyard or south-facing

wall. “Dwarf Red” is excellent for bonsai. “Red Silk,” “Wonderful” and “Pink Satin” are premium eating varieties that must be grown in pots and stored in the garage or basement over the winter. Pomegranates thrive in the hottest spots of your garden. They tolerate dry soils well but get unhappy with wet feet. All of these varieties are self-pollinating, but without losing quality. fruit-set occurs when you have more than one plant. The beautiful, rich orange-red flowers bring excitement to the summer garden. Some unusual Japanese selections have white, coral or bicolor flowers. Fruits ripen in late fall. If stored under refrigeration, they may be kept for a couple of months. If you have a bumper crop, share some fruits as gifts and follow centuries of tradition celebrating life, fertility, rebirth and abundance. Pomegranates are a true gift of love.

GROOMING & GLAMOUR

F

rom special occasions to an elevated beauty look for everyday wear, makeup artists can work their magic to make people feel phenomenal inside and out. Newly opened in Crestwood, The Artist Edit is drawing back the magician’s curtain to educate the public on how that wizardry happens. “The vision is in the name: editing the way makeup artistry is done, both for the artist

and the client,” co-founder Joy Loveless says. “I wanted to establish a go-to destination people could rely on for exceptional artistry and makeup services.” A two-year search for the ideal property in a central location led Loveless and co-founder Noelle to a space that offered the exact number of rooms needed for each artist who would take up residence inside the collaborative studio. “Together, our staff members form a dynamic and diverse team,” Loveless says. “We take pride in the expertise and unique talents that each individual brings, but we all have one major thing in common: The client’s happiness comes first. Ego and pride have no place in our business.” After major renovations, each room at the studio became a unique privacy suite, offering clients comfort in an intimate setting with their respective makeup artist. “At The Artist Edit, we understand that every client is unique, and so is their approach to makeup,” Loveless says. “We take the time to truly understand the individual sitting in our chair and tailor our services to their

specific desires and preferences.” Not only does the studio provide a professional space for each artist to work in (a rarity in the industry, Loveless notes), but it also serves as a hub for teaching salons, artists and clients how to master makeup for themselves. “We don’t keep secrets,” Loveless says. “We want everyone to have access to feeling and looking their best.” In addition, The Artist Edit offers an arsenal of beauty products you can snatch up to recreate your look at home. Loveless reports that the studio will offer holiday bargains on brush sets, basic and advanced makeup sets, lashes and the studio’s bestselling sponges, all of which can be shopped online. Loveless adds: “Our goal is to truly get to know our clients and provide a personalized, high-end experience tailored to your specific needs.” The appointment-only studio offers booking online, with a recommendation for bridal parties to book out at least 18 months in advance.

A RETREAT FOR

Rememberingg By Bethany Christo | Photos by Stephanie Pohlman

36

DECEMBER 15, 2023 | LadueNews.com

AFTER AN INDESCRIBABLE LOSS, THE RECIPIENTS OF THIS YEAR’S DESIGN FOR GOOD BEDROOM MAKEOVER HAVE A NEW FAVORITE PLACE TO RETREAT AND REFLECT.

A

s expected, the makeover reveal for this year’s Design for Good project on Nov. 17 was a tear-filled moment for designer Stephanie Pohlman and the Broadway family, this year’s recipients of an allexpenses-paid primary bedroom renovation. The reveal was especially emotional knowing one member of the Broadway family would not be able to enjoy the new space. Midway through the project, Jack Broadway, not yet 2 years old, passed away in his parents’ arms on Oct. 11 at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The story of his Leigh Syndrome diagnosis – a rare, incurable neurometabolic disease affecting the central nervous system and requiring multiple surgeries and hospital stays – was one reason why the Broadway family was selected for the makeover. Parents Jessica and Scott needed a better way to store Jack’s medical equipment and dreamed of a relaxing retreat to relieve stress at the end of the day while raising him and their 4-year-old son, Logan. “Of course, my heart broke when the Broadways told me Jack lost his battle mid-project,” Pohlman says. “But when Jessica told me this renovation came at just the right time, it warmed my heart to know we could put a small smile on their faces. Our goal was to create a space where they could spend time together as a family and remember their sweet Jack while they heal. The way they reacted gave me validation that we accomplished that.” The big reveal was a magical moment for everyone. “I think our jaws hit the floor,” Jessica Broadway says. “It was so bright, beautiful and serene … the perfect oasis we were hoping for. We could have never dreamed of a room this perfect. Stephanie has a gift.” Logan was equally impressed when he got home from school (“He goes, ‘Woah, this is cool!’” Jessica says), and the family broke in the space with a movie night. The renovation took seven months and included all-new furniture, built-ins and storage, ceiling beams, vertical shiplap and fresh paint. “We kept the room light, bright and neutral to give the Broadways the sanctuary they deserved,” Pohlman says. The built-ins were designed with the same arch detail found throughout the rest of the interior, and they feature drawers in the center portion and doors on the sides

with outlets to neatly store equipment and cords, though Pohlman recognized there was no longer a need to organize Jack’s medical equipment. “However, we were able to provide a space to display items in his memory and give his parents peace of mind as they cope with their indescribable loss,” Pohlman says. “I think my favorite small detail is a [picture] of Jesus walking hand in hand with a little boy,” Jessica Broadway says. “I think of the little boy as Jack, finally able to walk and have all the physical abilities he was not able to have during his time with us. I bet Stephanie didn’t realize just how special this small detail was to us.” Across from the built-ins is a feature wall behind the new upholstered bed. Pohlman chose vertical shiplap as a textural element to make the room feel larger and added striking wooden beams to the tray ceiling for an extra layer of coziness and cohesion. “We just can’t wait to get to our bedroom at the end of the day,” Jessica Broadway says. “I’ll sit by our windows in our new chairs and read, and Scott will watch TV in the room instead of the living room or basement. We just want to be in the room all the time. We’ve added some mementos of Jack; it’s a very special place for us to unwind.” Pohlman and team raised $3,500 on social media thanks to donations from local businesses and individuals who wanted to contribute to the cause. Including donated materials, Pohlman estimates the total cost of the makeover was around $15,000. They were generously aided in fundraising and purchasing furniture and décor by local businesses and contractors, including BRS Painting, Looking Glass Floors, FM Design Build, Premium Cabinets, INhance IT! Home Staging and Lucky Bargains rugs. This is the third iteration of Stephanie Pohlman Designs’ Design for Good project, which picks one St. Louis-area family from a pool of worthy nominees for an all-expenses-paid renovation of a room in their house. The process will kick off again in spring 2024, bigger and better than ever, and Pohlman dreams of doing an entire kitchen remodel for the five-year mark. She feels the impact of the thousands of dollars raised and the time and materials donated by an entire galvanized and generous community – and also from the hugs and tears from one thankful family whose lives will never be the same after the project. “We are so grateful to have been chosen for this project,” Jessica Broadway says. “Especially during this time when we are going through a lot of emotions and our minds are cluttered. Having this inviting space to come home to allows us to unwind and makes it easy to think about our boys and the memories we’ve shared. We have the greatest support system keeping us going. Stephanie and all the businesses involved with this renovation truly brought us light during this dark time in our lives.” Stephanie Pohlman Designs, 314-954-5095, stephaniepohlmandesigns.com

25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett

C

ity Academy celebrated its 25th anniversary in early November with a wonderful evening at the school. More than 300 guests enjoyed specialty drinks and hors d’oeuvres. During the cocktail hour, attendees were encouraged to visit the Gravity Maze and peruse an exhibition of student artwork. Guests then moved into the gym, where they were welcomed by City Academy president and co-founder Don Danforth III. A musical performance by Ricco Martin, Jr., class of 2021, followed. On his second song, Martin was joined by his former music teacher, Laren Loveless. Guest speaker Zuri Thomas, class of 2012, gave the afterdinner address, which was followed by a fund-the-future segment. Attendees later enjoyed dessert and music from the City Academy faculty and staff band. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!

LOCAL EATS

LOS ARCOS Story and photos by Mabel Suen

A

t Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill, a small model of the St. Louis Arch is proudly displayed inside the festive dining area. The name of the restaurant, however, represents more than just the local landmark – it also symbolizes the shapes of the Morelia aqueduct, a memorable site for siblings and co-owners Maria and Miguel Ruiz in their Michoacán hometown. Before the pandemic, Maria worked front of house at Las Palmas Mexican Restaurant for nearly 16 years. When COVID-19 hit, she began to miss interacting with the public. “I love working and talking with people,” Maria Ruiz says. With the help of Miguel, who has 20 years of restaurant experience under his belt, the pair

sought to bring their family’s favorite Mexican dishes to Clifton Heights. Miguel Ruiz established the original iteration of Los Arcos with his wife, Irene, in Atlanta, where the couple also owns a second eatery called Café Cancún Bar & Grill. The St. Louis location of Los Arcos, which opened in March 2023, fills the space previously occupied by Brazie’s Ristorante, now outfitted with Mexican art on orange, green and cream-colored walls. Operating the restaurant is a family affair, and guests can find Maria warmly greeting those who walk through the door with the help of her daughters, Kenia Morales and Jesi Moore, and additional support from her husband, Jose Morales. Menu highlights include an ever-popular molcajete brimming with grilled steak, chicken, shrimp and chorizo cooked with onions, cactus, green sauce and mozzarella cheese, served with rice or beans and tortillas. “We grew up going out to eat this,” Maria Ruiz says, noting that her favorite dish on offer is one of Miguel’s own recipes: pineapple fajitas. Grilled chicken, shrimp,

vegetables, fresh pineapple and mozzarella fill a pineapple husk for the eye-catching signature entrée. The rest of the menu, which is nothing short of massive, includes options ranging from appetizers and soups to nachos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tortas and burritos. The menu also boasts a sizable seafood selection, including a house ceviche with steamed fish and shrimp, lime juice, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and avocado. To wash it all down, the bar features margaritas, micheladas, beer and mixed drinks. “Everything is so good, and we can’t wait for people to come and give it a try,” Maria Ruiz says. “I’m so happy because a lot of people here are so nice. They come in to support us and I’m so thankful.” Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill, 3073 Watson Road, St. Louis, 314-256-1295, facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089250217200

BUSINESS NOTES

Sweet Second Chances By Daniel Puma | Photos courtesy of Laughing bear bakery

T

he brainchild of former prison chaplain Kalen McAllister, Laughing Bear Bakery is a local nonprofit skills reintegration program dedicated to supporting re-entering citizens affected by the judicial system. Beyond its primary mission of offering employment opportunities for returning citizens, the bakery is also renowned for its exceptional baked goods. “I noticed right before people got out of prison, they would come up to me and say, ‘Hey, we don’t want to leave because we can’t get a job,’” McAllister says. “I retired in 2015, and on my way out the door, I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to do something about this.’” McAllister founded Laughing Bear Bakery six months later. Since 2016, the nonprofit has employed more than 53 returning citizens who have gone on to manage restaurants, work in the government, own car washes and succeed in their careers. Only three former employees have returned to prison – a 5 percent recidivism rate compared to Missouri’s 43.9 percent for all releases, according to the Missouri Reentry Process Report. The bakery offers more than just a second chance for ex-offenders with its delicious assortment of homemade pies and baked goods. Both in-store and online, guests can choose from delectable cookies, biscotti, muffins, cakes and bear candy, which is an irresistible puffed corn treat baked in homemade caramel sauce and coated with brown sugar. The recipes have been collected through friends, donors and employees who have passed through the kitchen over the years. One current employee even created his own specialty treat for the bakery. “He was in prison watching baking shows and would copy

down the recipes and stick them in an envelope to make them when he got out,” McAllister says. “He came up with all of our fruit tarts that we now sell – it was all his idea.” The only rule at the bakery? Don’t ask what employees did to get into prison. “It was the lowest point of their lives,” McAllister says. “They don’t want to have to tell the world about it.” Laughing Bear’s mission and food are equally impressive, but what shines the most is the bakery’s sense of family and community. What else could you ask for in a St. Louis nonprofit?

THE MUSE

‘IN PLACE OF CONTEXT’

be very careful about getting the picture right the first time with the film I’m using – it’s a very deliberate process. That means that none of my images are manipulated like you can do with a digital camera. It’s very challenging to take photographs of buildings where there are trees, powerlines or anything obstructing my ability to get a good view of the subject matter that I want to shoot. I feel proud that I’m able to do that without photoshopping my photographs.”

By Madeleine Ackerburg | Photos by Ken Konchel

A

rchitecture, according to photographer Ken Konchel, is not a dismissible backdrop to our daily lives – it’s a dynamic force that shapes our society, connects our past and defines our relationships. “In Place of Context,” Konchel’s newest exhibition at The Kranzberg Arts Foundation, invites viewers to reconstruct their view of the world around them through a close examination of the fundamental elements of architecture – shape, line, pattern, tone and texture – and appreciate the integral aspects of our existence we often take for granted. The exhibition, shown from Dec. 1, 2023 to Jan. 27, 2024, promises compositions that stretch beyond immediate recognition and introduce audiences to intriguing visual possibilities that transform the buildings, and world, around them. Congratulations on “In Place of Context.” Can you share the inspiration behind the title and what it signifies in the larger context of your work? “The name of the exhibition emerges from my intention to make compelling photographs that remove the context and distill architecture to nothing but relationships with shape, line, pattern, form, detail, tone and texture. I used to create more representational work, but I found more fulfillment in taking detailed shots of buildings to create compositions that don’t immediately reveal themselves as architecture. I like to take detailed images of architecture up close, so audiences can’t quite recognize the building right away and view it from a perspective they may not have considered before.” Your photography often involves using unusual vantage points and spatial

58

DECEMBER 15, 2023 | LadueNews.com

ambiguities between buildings. How do you choose these perspectives, and how does the viewer’s interaction with space play into your artistic vision? “I’ve been shooting in St. Louis for a long time; years ago, I began documenting the architecture of other cities. At this point, I’m up to 19 cities in addition to St. Louis. What I typically do is called ‘scouting for an image,’ which is where I’ll walk around a building that I find intriguing to determine the composition that would be most compelling. I evaluate potential shots that explore the angles, cubes, curves, triangles and other shapes of the building to challenge and captivate people by introducing them to different visual possibilities in architecture.” Your photographic style involves precise calibration of lines, shapes and forms. Can you elaborate on the meticulous process behind achieving this precision and the visual impact it has on your work? “I shoot silver gelatin photography and darkroom photography. I use a four-by-five-inch negative to take the photographs, so I don’t have the luxury of taking 50 pictures. I have to

How do you hope viewers will perceive and interact with your photographs in this exhibition? “One of my goals is to help people appreciate architecture. Architecture gives us a sense of place and identity, it enhances and advances our creative legacy, and it contributes immeasurably to our quality of life. But so often it’s dismissed as mundane and taken for granted. My ambition is to raise awareness and an appreciation for it. When people look at my work and say, ‘I’ve seen this building before, but I’ve never seen it in this particular way,’ that’s a real compliment to me.” Looking ahead, what artistic endeavors or themes are you excited to explore in the future? “I typically travel in the spring and fall to photograph because those are seasons when the lighting conditions are ideal for photographing architecture. I’m hoping to go to Washington, D.C., next spring to document their architecture, so I’m looking forward to that.” Ken Konchel, kenkonchelphoto.com The Kranzberg Arts Foundation, 3224 Locust St., Ste. 401, St. Louis, 314-549-9990, kranzbergartsfoundation.org

The Saint Louis Fashion Fund celebrates its 10th anniversary with a year of spectacular events.

I

n honor of its 10th anniversary, the Saint Louis Fashion Fund is hosting a year-long celebration of the people, organizations and businesses making St. Louis one of the most vibrant fashion cities in the United States. “Saint Louis Fashion Fund is an important voice for the entire industry – and we’re all stronger together,” says Susan Sherman, board chair and co-founder of SLFF. The nonprofit launched in 2014 with a mission to revitalize St. Louis’ historic Garment District and put the metro back on the fashion map. In collaboration with local and national fashion designers, retailers and organizations, the Fund’s 2024 anniversary events include fashion shows, a fashion lobby day in Jefferson City and top fashion personalities visiting St. Louis. Attendees can also expect to see some familiar faces at events like the Gent Menswear Fashion show, held at City Park on Feb. 18, 2024, where St. Louis City SC teammates and young players from the squad’s “City Futures” program walk the runway in cutting-edge fashion. In March, the Fund will host its first-ever Lobby Day at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. “It’s part of a statewide effort to raise awareness for how fashion fits into the economy as a whole, from job attraction to economic development,” Sherman says, noting St. Louis’ $3.3 billion fashion industry. In April, fashion design icon Michael Kors will headline the Fund’s free annual “Speaking of Fashion” event at Washington University in St. Louis. Another event to watch out for is the Lou Fusz Fashion Fleet, which involves fashion-statement-wrapped cars celebrating various 10th anniversary events. As she looks back on the Fund’s first decade, Sherman recalls all the young designers and emerging brands that have inspired and energized her through the years. “We’ve grown up a lot,” she says. “We started with a fashion incubator on Washington Avenue until the pandemic hit us hard.

Fashion is 24/7; it’s always changing – you have to pivot and change with it.” Still, SLFF continues to attract and retain local to global talent, Sherman explains: “Every day, we serve youth with internships and job opportunities to keep talent in the city. Our local designers are the backbone of our ecosystem. We want to make sure they know there are opportunities for them in St. Louis.” The nonprofit will also continue to support the industry’s workforce development, including the refugee training program at small-batch fashion manufacturer The Collective Thread in St. Louis’ storied Garment District. Sherman credits the Fund’s board for helping the organization reach its decade-long milestone. “We have a consistent and tremendous board that cares about preserving and growing the business of fashion in St. Louis, supporting emerging brands and keeping them here to scale and grow,” she says. The nonprofit’s 10th anniversary partners include WashU, Gent, FWRDSociety, The Collective Thread, STL Fashion Alliance, Missouri Historical Society, Mother Model Management, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and the Women’s Society of WashU. SLFF welcomes everyone to join its anniversary celebration and check out upcoming free and ticketed events. Follow the Fund’s Instagram for posts about truck shows, holiday markets and opportunities to shop local all season long. “The Fashion Fund is grateful to our generous sponsors over the years,” Sherman adds. “For our 10th anniversary, we are especially thankful to Washington University in St. Louis, Caleres, Lewis Rice Design Luxury, Edward Jones, Ken Cella, Kristin Johnson, Greater St. Louis Inc., Lou Fusz Automotive Network and U.S. Bankcorp.” Saint Louis Fashion Fund, saintlouisfashionfund.org, instagram.com/stlfashionfund LadueNews.com | DECEMBER 15, 2023
