What’s your favorite Peter Pan-related character or thing (see p. 71)? MARK BRETZ Since I have never liked anything associated with Peter Pan until the musical version of Finding Neverland, I’d say my favorite character is the producer, Charles Frohman. I must confess, though, that I’ve never seen the film.

letter

from the

EDITOR ‌THIS YEAR I HAVE MADE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE STRESSFUL than usual by worrying about buying the perfect gifts for everyone on my list, cleaning and decorating my house for visitors and so many other things – things that quite frankly don’t matter. I had all of my stress put into perspective this weekend, though, as my husband and I opened the wish list for the foster child we “adopted” for the holidays. The wish list, to our surprise, included just one item: a leather belt. After picking one out and watching it be wrapped at the store, I paused to consider that this might be the only thing this child would receive this Christmas. In all the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to get swept up in things that truly don’t matter, so remember to take a step back and remember the true reason for the season. In this week’s The Daily, LN contributing writer Paul Brown shares the story of Dan Jennings, commander of the St. Louis area Salvation Army, starting on p. 60. Although Jennings is a Jayhawk (commence MIZ! chant), his story is not only touching but also an inspiration. We hope it inspires you during the holiday season to give generously to those in need. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

t

he holiday season is a festive one at The Gatesworth. Residents have the opportunity to experience a variety of holiday-themed events, all in the comfort of their home. On tuesday, Dec. 6, The Gatesworth residents enjoyed the sounds of the season at a chamber choir concert, “A Winter Jubilee,” brought to them through a partnership with Washington University and the Lifelong Learning institute. The Lifelong Learning institute offers a wide variety of courses that emphasize peer learning and active class participation by senior adults. The institute has several big tie-ins with The Gatesworth, including that one of its founders, henrietta Freedman, is a resident. The Gatesworth program director Kathy Davis says in addition to Freedman, residents suzanne Wohl and Allen Furfine have been key organizational parts of the institute, and this concert was something they wanted to do in collaboration with the Washington University Department of Music. “A Winter Jubilee” lit up the atrium of The Gatesworth, with dozens of choir members performing assorted holiday numbers to celebrate the season. Davis says that while they’ve had members of Washington University’s Department of Music come sing before, they’ve never had such a large group performing. in addition to the concert, The Gatesworth hosted a breakfast with santa,

a winter carnival and the eight nights of hanukkah. Davis says that the sunday after Thanksgiving, “elves” came to The Gatesworth in the evening, working half the night getting the community decorated for the holidays. “That way, when everyone gets up in the morning, it’s all decorated,” she says. During the month of December, there’s always music or something festive going on in The Gatesworth community. Following up the concert, members of the Opera Theatre of saint Louis’ Artists-in-Residence program came and performed on Dec. 9. Davis notes that they’re training with the Opera Theatre for a short term, but at the conclusion of their studies, The Gatesworth was able to request a performance. “We have so many opera lovers here, so it’s lovely to be able to bring the members of the program to come perform,” Davis says. Wohl says she greatly appreciates the holiday events The Gatesworth provides, along with music throughout the year. “Whatever musical guests The Gatesworth provides, they’re always magnificent,” Wohl says. “[The Gatesworth] really goes out of the way to bring us the best they can find. We have a great time tapping our feet and clapping our hands.”

he inaugural Glennon Glow gala, which Bob Costas hosted, recently took place at The Chase Park Plaza. The event celebrated the 60th anniversary of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital’s 1956 opening to all children in need of care and their families, regardless of financial circumstances. This memorable, one-of-a-kind experience began with a VIP cocktail reception, followed by dinner and a performance by St. Louis comedian and magician Justin Willman. More than 600 people attended, among them St. Louis Cardinals powerhouses (present and past) Mike Matheny and Ozzie Smith. The 2016 Glennon Award went to Peggy and Jerry Ritter. Honorary chairs were Noémi and Michael Neidorff.

Missouri Veterans History Project

LEGACY JUBILEE

L

Photos and story by David Anderson

egacy Jubilee, the annual fundraiser for Missouri Veterans History Project (MVHP), takes place each November the week before Veterans Day. This year’s event featured the color guard from the Missouri National Guard 3175th Chemical Company, along with Vietnam veteran Fred Walker on the saxophone. The project’s volunteers record history by interviewing Missouri veterans, each of whom provides a unique perspective about our nation’s history. Firsthand recollections provide a richer and more personal context to historical events, and both the State Historical Society of Missouri and the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., archive the project’s recordings, which scholars, students and the general public can access. Also, a copy of a given recording goes to the veteran involved at no charge, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. Jay Balk, Jill Alexander

Pines Shine

T

By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess

he holiday season inspires us to “deck the halls” not just with holly and ivy but with fragrant pine. One of our favorite seasonal accessories is the natural pine cone – with or without the bough. In the South, giant cones off the longleaf pine traditionally served as fireplace mantel décor with magnolia leaves, holly berries and galax. They also made fabulous suet bird feeders and centerpieces. Although Missouri cones off our shortleaf pine may lack the same drama, they still add flair to a winter scene. Smaller cones make great place-cardholders or pretty ornaments when dipped in gold paint or glittered. Use your imagination to create new arrangements with cones of all sizes – and consider the following seasonal activities: Make a Bird Feeder Tie a string or wire to the tip of a pine cone. Fill spaces between scales with peanut butter or suet. Then roll the cone in birdseed, and hang it. This, by the way, makes a great craft project to share with young children. Bleach Pine Cones Start with dry, open, home-grown pine cones. Mix bleach two parts to one with water in a bucket. Submerge the cones in the solution, and press down with a weighted plate. Cover the bucket and leave it for 48 hours. After that, rinse the cones in a baking soda solution to neutralize the bleach, and spread them on a cookie sheet to dry. Cones that have closed will gradually reopen. Use the cones alone or mixed with natural or painted cones for a fresh twist on natural. Learn About Pines of Merit Visit the Missouri Botanical Garden during the winter to find the best pines for your own garden from the large inventory of species and cultivars. The biggest selection of trees grows in the Japanese

Garden. Most people just plant a pine and let it grow, but this special landscape area also illustrates the unique beauty obtained through specialized pruning. Management by clipper also can allow you to grow almost any species of pine at the scale of your own garden. Nipping the candles (new growth) with your pruners or thumbnail makes an easy way to keep trees small. Because of their adaptability to pruning, pines also make suitable bonsai specimens. Three lovely pines have been awarded the Plants of Merit distinction. The lacebark pine (with fabulous bark interest), tall and shapely ‘Vanderwolf’s Pyramid’ limber pine and the little round dwarf ‘Sea Urchin’ white pine are all recommended for St. Louis gardens. Many species will do well here, including white pine, jack pine, Austrian pine, Japanese black pine and Scotch pine. If you like a challenge, consider the magnificent red-barked Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera,’ a midsize selection of the Japanese red pine. A couple of stunning examples of this cultivar grow at the south end of the garden’s lake. The landscape value of pines is best appreciated in the quiet winter months, when their deciduous siblings all have gone dormant and the rich evergreen foliage stands out.

More than just environments, we create experiences. We create places with soul.

– SaSha alekSandr Malinich

n the linked fields of architecture and interior design, one of St. Louis’ indisputable leaders recently expanded his horizons by supplementing assignments for restaurateurs here and elsewhere, perhaps incongruously, with humble housework. Earlier this year, that leader, Sasha Aleksandr Malinich, increased an already-high profile by transforming über-chef Gerard Craft’s beloved Niche into Craft’s Sardella – but he also has been exploring nonrestaurant opportunities with R/5 Design Agency. Initially, Malinich explains the enigmatic moniker of the agency. “R/5, firstly, is an acronym which appropriately describes our philosophy and design process and is the heartbeat of our culture,” he says, before relating, at length, the quintet of components involved. “Reflect – our initial client interaction. We reflect on their particular vision, concept or programmatic idea. Respond – an initial design response is conceived, developed and presented. Refine – the initial design response inevitably gets fleshed out and refined. Resolve – design, in the end, is about problem-solving and resolving issues necessary to address the project brief. Resonate – it is not about using catalogues to create our spaces. Our work, in the end, should resonate and touch human emotion. More than just environments, we create experiences. We create places with soul.” Malinich next briefly expounds on what inspired R/5’s creation – and at least for the nonce, what services it will offer. “Since a young age growing up in New York, I have been blessed with the incredible experience of extensive global travels and felt the timing – now – was perfect, after nearly 30 years of designing projects globally, to create a design entity, as a collective workshop, where design is imagined, conceived, developed and executed collectively,” he says. “R/5 is a subsidiary company of CASCO Diversified Corporation, a more than 40-year-old architectural/engineering group based in St. Louis, with offices in Portland, Oregon; Edison, New Jersey; and Branson, Missouri. R/5 will offer full-service design both commercially and residentially, primarily focused on luxury and specialty retail, hospitality, corporate and creative work environments, agency work, residential, sports clubs, retail/mixed-use developments, specialty retail and so forth.” From idea to execution, Malinich, who serves as director of design at CASCO, also sketches how R/5’s residential projects proceed. “We work instinctually, constantly challenging what is rational and thoughtfully conceiving spaces using life experience and intuition,” he says. “In many of our design projects, we create custom design lighting, fixtures and furnishings, and partner with bespoke manufacturers, craftsmen and artisans to realize the intended design vision.” Many diverse inspirations factor into his architectural and interior design, especially the residential work, notes Malinich, one of them touchingly familial. “Global travel, culture, life experience, nature, and color, texture and light play major roles in our designs,” he says. “Many international designers, including my (now-deceased) residential interior designer Aunt Olga, who was a prominent designer in McLean, Virginia, and was probably my biggest design influence over the years. “She worked on many prominent homes in Washington, D.C. She taught me to have an appreciation and understanding for global cultures, fine art, architecture, music and international interior design. In addition, she was an accomplished fine artist, chef, master bookbinder and a museum-quality art framer.” In a world hilariously (if not tragically) overclocked, Malinich cites what he considers the preeminent challenge typical of residential projects: “Normal to any project, residential or otherwise – time sensitivity, crazily abridged and oftentimes unrealistic design schedules and budgets.” Despite such temporal constraints, Malinich names manifold rewards of his residential work before continuing on the rewards of his work in general. “The intimacy of scale,” he says. “The ability to touch our client’s heart or a particular emotion with design. To create a sanctuary as personal they are. To create a home. “More often than not, I design for globally recognized brands, including many international apparel groups and luxury brands, as well as national and internationally acclaimed chefs. I have designed spaces from Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, to Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue in New York City. “Currently, we are designing the Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s Lifestyle store in New York City, the Saks Fifth Avenue Women’s Lifestyle store in Greenwich, Connecticut, a PIRCH store in Austin, Texas, and Vicia restaurant in St. Louis. In addition, we are currently working on a barbershop from London in the U.K. and a gourmet coffee house from Stockholm, Sweden, among other restaurants.” He similarly reflects on the residential project that brought him the most pride. “While working at a previous firm many years ago, I spent the better part of a year and a half sharing time between St. Louis and New York City, living and working on a fashion designer’s beach home in East Hampton, New York, with a close friend and accomplished architect,” Malinich recalls. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will never forget. It was a challenging project, yet extraordinarily rewarding in the end.” Finally, he gazes into the crystal ball to envision how R/5 might grow in the near term. “R/5 growth will happen naturally,” Malinich says. “This is not about being the biggest or the best. That is meaningless to me. I am not interested in doing hundreds of projects a year. “What is important is that we live and breathe design and create a culture that constantly strives to better our clients’ lives and brands through design. We are interested in partnering with extraordinarily talented and dedicated individuals, craftsmen and artisans who are passionate about design and are willing to share their talents in our future projects.”

A Classic Holiday Look

‌W

hether attending seasonal parties or simply spending time with loved ones, sport a classic holiday makeup look that will make you feel both glamorous and festive. (Although you likely already own everything needed to achieve such a look, I recommend visiting Nordstrom or Sephora for any odds and ends.) Achieve the first step to the look, a flawless face, with a medium- to full-coverage foundation. Once you’ve applied it, add concealer beneath your eyes to brighten your face. Then, set it with powder to ensure your makeup stays put all day and night. After that, add bronzer to your cheekbones and anywhere else

the sun kisses. Also touch rosy blush to the apples of your cheeks for a pop of color. Finally, for a glam look, add a highlighter to your cheekbones to make them pop, too. Once you’ve finished your flawless face, turn to your eyes (which will be very simple to leave your lips the facial focus). Pat a gold-toned eyeshadow with shimmer onto your eyelids, and blend it into your creases using windshield-wiper motions. Just using one eye shadow makes this look nice and easy. After applying eye shadow, turn to a black winged eyeliner for a classic holiday look. (If you doubt you can create a wing, by the way, just line your upper lids with black eyeliner and skip the wing.) As long as

you apply black eyeliner to the upper lids, your eyes will look fine. For this specific look, skip the eyeliner on the bottom because it can make eyes look smaller. Then add mascara to your top and bottom lashes to complete your eyes. Last but not least comes the star of the show – red lipstick. Nothing’s more classic and festive than red lips during the holidays. Apply red lip liner before applying the lipstick to help define your lips even more and make your lipstick last longer. Outline your lips with the lip liner, and fill them in as well. Apply red lipstick and go over the lip liner you just applied. The lipstick completes your classic holiday makeup look – so go wow your friends and family.

hristmastime has arrived, and one of the best places to get in the spirit remains the Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. With a plethora of holiday performances lined up, at least one show should suit your style. And who better to model festive dresses than Kimberly Morse and Ericka Goss, ballerinas with the Saint Louis Ballet? The ballet company regularly performs at the Touhill, including holiday favorite The Nutcracker, which debuts this evening and runs through Fri., Dec. 23. The Big Day

Make your holidays truly sparkle with a custom piece from Genovese Jewelers. Genovese Jewelers has been family-owned and -operated for 35 years. The store carries more than $6 million in inventory year-round, with customer service that can’t be beat.

LadueNews.com | December 16, 2016   55

THE BIG DAY: Feature Story

Merry Genovese Jewelers

I

t’s a busy time of year at Genovese Jewelers, as customers flock to find the perfect pieces for the holidays. Elizabeth Eby Trautman, head of advertising and sales associate, says visitors are drawn to statement-type jewelry this season, including diamond bangle bracelets, chandelier earrings and diamond necklaces. “As for the fashion, Gabriel & Co. has led the way,” Eby says. “They have tons of pieces, big and small, that not only stand alone but look amazing layered.” Eby says the oval diamond has been very “in” for engagement rings, but the round cut leads the way. “There have been multiple couples who have taken advantage of our in-house CAD [computer-aided design] services to craft the perfect proposal,” she says.

and

“Nothing is more romantic than watching a man pick out the perfect ring for the woman he loves.” As the company looks back on 2016, Eby notes that Genovese is moving forward. The company increased its CAD capabilities, making it possible to produce more jewelry in-house. In addition, Genovese’s designer line, NOVIA, is bigger and more popular than ever. “We also partnered with tons of new charity organizations and donated hundreds of thousands

of dollars across the St. Louis area,” Eby says. “One of our most favorite events was our party we held with Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis. We loved not only partnering with such a great group of women, but also loved helping them grow their club.” Looking forward to 2017, Eby says Genovese will continue to support the St. Louis economy by producing more and more jewelry in-house. “Our goal is always to grow while still upholding our same great values as a local St. Louis jewelry business with impeccable customer service and products,” she concludes.

he holiday season wouldn’t be the same without the familiar sound of Salvation Army bells gently ringing. Although Lt. Col. Dan Jennings, the new commander of the St. Louis area Salvation Army, has an endless number of responsibilities all year long, he still takes time during the holiday season to stand on a street corner next to a collection kettle and ring the bell. “It would be hard to go out Christmas shopping anywhere without hearing the Salvation Army bells ringing,” Jennings says. “I think that bell ushers in the Christmas season.” Jennings shared that the best part of ringing the bell is when he hears the stories that donors tell about how the coins or dollars dropped into the kettle have helped people – from stories that happened during World War II to recent disasters and the ongoing mission to feed and house those in need. “They remind me of the huge shoes that we walk in now, of the saints who went before us and served and sacrificed and did what was needed to get people through some difficult times,” Jennings says. “They remind me that we have to do the same things to make our community just a little better, so those stories are amazing.” Jennings grew up in Lawrence, Kansas (a Jayhawk, but hopes Mizzou fans won’t hold that against him), and he knew from a very young age that he wanted to be in the business of improving lives. It started the day his mom enrolled him in the Cub Scout pack that met at the local Salvation Army headquarters. The same day she signed Jennings up for Scouting, she signed up to be a Salvation Army volunteer. Eventually, she became an employee and worked there for 30 years, so joining the ranks came naturally to Jennings. “From the time I was 8 years old, I saw what the Salvation Army was doing, and it was woven into the fabric of who I was,” Jennings says. He married another Salvation Army officer, Dorene, who is also a lieutenant colonel and is the divisional director of women’s ministries. They moved to their new post last July, so this marks their first Christmas in St. Louis. The St. Louis/Southern Illinois Command Center is one of the nation’s largest because of the high demand. The local Salvation Army operates and supplies food banks and meal centers, and provides emergency shelter, low-income housing and mental health treatment services, among other things. While taking care of day-today needs is a big part of what the organization does, it’s also putting emphasis on an operation called Pathway to Hope. Jennings says it’s an intense program aimed at a select few. “We take people who really want to make an investment and be held accountable, and move them from being dependent on social services to being independent,” Jennings says. According to him, the success rate is “through the roof” for those who truly commit to the program and want to break free of the vicious cycle of poverty. “People feel good about themselves,” he says. “They set goals, some as simple as getting a high school diploma or taking community college classes and getting clean and sober. When they set goals and get rid of the barriers that are preventing them from succeeding, it’s amazing what happens to a life.” A third of the local Salvation Army’s budget is raised during November and December. The annual budget last year was $5.9 million, and this year’s fundraising goal is $6.1 million. It all starts with ringing a bell. “Christmas is a season that brings out a sense of generosity in all of us and a sense of hope and wanting to make things better,” Jennings says, “and the Salvation Army becomes that vehicle by which people can do that and make an investment in their community.” While he watches the hustle and bustle of the holiday season before him, another thing Jennings sees from the front lines at the kettle is the way kids react to the bells.

From the time I was 8 years old, I saw what the Salvation Army was doing, and it was woven into the fabric of who I was. - LT. COL. DAN JENNINGS “That always touches my heart, to see the natural, intuitive generosity in the hearts of children,” he says. “They’ll grab their parents’ coats and slow them down and say, ‘We’ve got to put something in the kettle.’ They know it’s going to help somebody and that it’s the right thing to do.” And that’s the reason Lt. Col. Jennings and his troops keep the wonderful sound of those bells ringing.

do you

What’s It Take to Be the Best?

your neighborhood

By Charlotte VM Ottley

‌“ To be the best, you have to believe you are.” – An Ottley-ism

H

ow many times have you seen successful individuals and asked yourself, “How did they do that?” The world’s full of people who naturally give their best to every endeavor – some win, but many don’t. Those who do achieve greatness likely possess certain attributes, while others become the best because their peers didn’t even try. In that regard, consider these 10 keys to being the best: 1. Discovery: People often discover attributes about themselves that surprise even them. For example, Lou Brock, St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Hall of Famer, once shot a spitball from the back of a classroom to the front. His teacher punished him by making him sit with “A” students in front of the class and try out for baseball. This forced Brock to discover something about himself that he took for granted, to raise his standards for himself and to try something out of his comfort zone. The rest, of course, is history. 2. Observation: Notice yourself and how people respond to you. Being observant helps shape our behavior to get the best result we want from others. Take risks and ask others what they like about you most, as well as what they think you do best. Depending on who you ask, you may find many different “best” qualities to duplicate and enhance. Knowing what you do best will help you address areas that need work. 3. Resilience: Being the best often comes after many failures. Most “best” people have stories of how they lost, tried again, lost again and tried yet again. Such things happen in all professions. Even if you’re not widely acclaimed as the best, it doesn’t mean you’re not. 4. Expectations: Too often, people set expectations so high they defeat themselves. Others lack discipline and fail to make sacrifices needed to succeed. Still others allow outside opinions to distract them and, thus, misdirect their skills. 5. Self-Satisfaction: When you have “it,” you know it – inside and out. Your joy’s contagious, and others recognize it. This triggers your journey for more. But if you don’t believe in yourself and the values of values of faith, you can fail. Many celebrities, for instance, get trapped in the roller-coaster life of on-again, off-again popularity and degrees of excellence. Be pleasing to yourself in the presence of others. 6.  Perspective of Others: The media, fans, employees, family and friends have their own standards of what’s best. When they acclaim you as the best, take the compliment humbly, and try to understand their perspectives. Often, doing so will mean more than just winning – it will help you win again. 7.  Replication of Best Behaviors: We all have people we admire to the point we try to emulate them. But they’re just models. Your unique best must still be realized and distinguishably identified as yours. 8. Faith: Your competitive edge of what you believe and what you believe in will propel you despite the odds and mitigating circumstances. How you leverage this power remains your choice. 9. Character: Win or lose, persons with good character, regardless of circumstances, generally earn the benefit of the doubt that they’re the best across the board. The “like” factor can be whimsical but validating. 10. Consistency: Despite highs and lows, the choice of consistency in quality of what you do trumps temporary wins. The true best remains long-standing and allinclusive, but amenable to scrutiny as well. You have to choose to be the best. Doing so may mean reinventing yourself – say, re-engineering the responsibilities of your job. Even better, accept that today’s your “happily ever after,” and be the best at that. You have what it takes!

Happily Ever After

Hans,Anna

and the Higginbotham Family

By Robyn Dexter

‌Once upon a time, there were

two extremely sick 8-week-old border collie mixes. Part of the Frozen litter, they were named Hans and Anna. Beth Higginbotham and her husband, Tom, had been fostering for 4 Paws 4 Rescue for more than three years and agreed to foster the sickly pups. “We had to give them baths every day and keep them separate from the other animals,” Beth Higginbotham recalls. They carefully cared for Hans and Anna, handling them with gloves. A few weeks into their stay, Tom Higginbotham brought up the idea of adopting the puppies, and the rest is history. Hans and Anna are now about 2 years old and aren’t sickly anymore. “They are polar opposites,” Beth Higginbotham muses. “Hans is easygoing and loves everyone. Anna is afraid of everyone and everything.” Beth Higginbotham says they do a lot of training with Anna, both for socialization and for athleticism. “Since she’s a collie mix, she’s extremely athletic,” Beth Higginbotham says. “She jumps through hoops and is great with obedience commands.” Anna has to start and end her day with a hug from Beth Higginbotham and will press her head into Beth’s shoulder. Hans, although he loves everyone, isn’t as athletic as his sister. Higginbotham says he’s more inclined to be a couch potato than jump through a hoop. The dogs love to go camping, something they first experienced this past summer. They also enjoy going for walks, chasing squirrels and trying to catch moles

in the backyard. The Higginbothams are fond of herding breeds and had a collie before the brother and sister duo. “We lost her at 16, and Anna was extremely attached to her,” Beth Higginbotham says. “That was adorable.” Though Beth Higginbotham has never dressed up dogs before, she says these two are an exception. This past Halloween, Anna had a yellow saddle costume with a cat, so it looked like the cat was riding her. Hans had a surfer riding his back. “We had kids who had visited earlier in the night come back later with their parents and grandparents just to see the dogs in their costumes,” Beth Higginbotham says. “It was hilarious.” The Higginbothams continue to foster for 4 Paws 4 Rescue, but it’s mostly been temporary fostering since they adopted Hans and Anna. “We’ll transport and drop off, help with paperwork if necessary,” Higginbotham says. “There’s always something to be done.”

Who gets the rings? St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

When parties decide to get married, an engagement usually takes place first where an engagement ring is given. At the time of the marriage, wedding rings and/ or bands are then exchanged during the wedding ceremony. These rings are generally gifts from one party to the marriage to the other. When a divorce takes places, the question that often comes up is who gets these rings? In some instances, these items are not in dispute. But in other divorces, one party might demand the return of the wedding and/or engagement ring. In many of these cases, one party may feel as if they had to save and make a significant invest-

ment in order to make the purchase. Especially if the marriage is short-term in duration, a party can then feel as if the return of these items is the right thing. The laws in each state can vary and each marriage is different. This is why it is important for any party to consult with an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction. However, generally speaking, in a divorce, marriage property and debt is to be divided in a just manner when considering all the of the factors in a jurisdiction where equitable distribution is the law. But in saying that, there are exceptions for items that are considered separate property. One item that is generally considered separate property

is gifts to a spouse. Generally speaking, wedding rings, bands and/or engagement rings would fall under the gift exception. So, while party might demand the return of these items during divorce, the practical reality is that in most situations that does not take place unless one party agrees to do so as part of the divorce resolution. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We have lawyers available to help you in your case. Volvo’s all-new XC90 was released in 2016 and was showered with praise from the automotive press. Even with more than 100 awards such as Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year and North American Truck of the Year, I couldn’t see Volvo as anything but manufacturing soft, tedious, driver-detached deprivation chambers. I asked myself, “Why would I waste my time with something I know I’ll find forgettable?” With the goal of discovering today’s best luxury SUVs, the Volvo XC90 wasn’t even a blip on my radar. The obvious

line, one up from the entry T5, but one down from the plugin hybrid T8. Power comes from a 2-liter, direct-injected, twin-cam four cylinder that is shared across the XC90 line. In the T6, however, the way air is fed into the combustion chambers is a unique development born from clever Swedes and Chinese cash. At lower rpms, a two-stage supercharging system boosts grunt, and as revs climb, boost duties are handed off to a turbocharger. This twin-charger setup results in 316 horsepower and 295 pound/feet of torque at 2,200 rpm, enough to propel the 4,600-pound ute to 60 in six seconds flat. Those aren’t class-leading numbers, but they’re enough that the XC90 feels lively when switching to

place that made me feel happy. But the real appreciation for what the Volvo team has accomplished came 30 minutes down the road. One will immediately notice the comfort and support given by the seats, but it takes a bit of time in them to realize your entire body feels less tense. Yes, these seats stand out as something I want in my life. In fact, Volvo spent seven years developing them with a team of 16 ergonomics engineers. Adding to the list of personal best-evers, these seats are the most comfortable I’ve ever felt. Plus, the third row is genuinely usable to adult humans, rather than a slapped-into-place afterthought. Volvo uses a composite transverse leaf spring in the rear suspension that makes the

choices from BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and Audi were what my biases told me were the cream of the crop, and thus I should focus solely on them. So where the decision to contact West County Volvo and ask for a loaner came from, I’m not quite sure. Maybe it’s that little voice that roots for the underdog, or maybe it’s the love of a good surprise. Whatever the case, a weekend with the XC90 certainly delivered a healthy dose of surprises. To properly tell the story of this new car, though, we need to go back in time a few years. The name Volvo means “I roll” in Latin, harking back to its founding in 1911 as a ballbearing manufacturer. (This actually has nothing to do with my story, but I found it a funny tangent.) No, the story of the XC90 goes back to 2010 when then-cash-strapped Ford sold its stake in the brand to Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. The name Geely isn’t important; it’s a Chinese holding company you’ve likely never heard of. What is important is that Volvo’s new owners were cash rich and anxious to return the name to global-player status. Frustrated Volvo engineers, hamstrung by years of lean budgets, were suddenly set free with a clean slate. Today, the XC90 sits atop the first fruit of this investment, an all-new modular chassis system known as Scalable Product Architecture. And Volvo is enjoying its third straight year of record sales – apparently my decision to give Volvo a look was a bit late to the party. My T6 weekend drive model falls middle of the XC90

the passing lane. Under acceleration, the handoff between supercharger and turbocharger is seamless. Throttle response is also snappy, and the eight-speed automatic responds quickly to driver inputs without hesitation. As a whole, the XC90 delivers a pleasantly communicative drive. I wouldn’t stretch to call it exciting, but the feedback and feel are good enough not to be seen as a downside, as is the case with many SUVs. However, it’s the new ideas and attention to detail on the inside that set the XC90 apart; as with the exhaust on the F-Type, I could spend the entire body of this story talking interior bits. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system draws one’s eye like a jewel held into the light. It has the looks and is even better to use. I never noticed a hint of lag, and all functionality is quick and intuitive to locate when digging through menus. Unlike a typical touch screen, Volvo incorporated an infrared mesh under the glass to locate fingertips. It’s noticeably more precise than any screen you’ve used before, and it functions flawlessly even while wearing gloves. My T6 Momentum model was fitted with the optional Bowers & Wilkins stereo ($2,650). I’m a 99.99th-percentile audio snob, and I can say without doubt that the B&W audio system is worth every penny – it’s easily the best in-car stereo I’ve heard yet. And you don’t have to be a snob to appreciate the delicacy and precision with which it will render your tracks. The interior, fore and aft, is full of airy freshness, with nappa leather contrasting with wood and aluminum. It’s a

rear suspension more compact, resulting in more back-row interior room. And those are just some of the highlights of an interior brimming with new ideas. In many ways, it’s a gamechanging place to exist, resetting the high bar to which all other manufacturers should aspire. And it’s more confirmation of how automotive science can advance when smart engineers are given a clean slate, not shackled within the confines of sharing parts bins across a diverse brand offering. I make no qualms about it – I crave exhilaration behind the wheel. As that’s not what the XC90 is about, why does it speak to me so? Well, the answer might be because I also appreciate attention paid to the fine-level details, even if those details are for the purpose of something other than maximum lateral Gs. The XC90 isn’t an exciting car to drive. For my taste, it could even be called boring, but it’s the boring car I’ve least wanted to return. It’s the way Volvo created a boring car that feels like home. If I were in the market for a luxury SUV, there’s no doubt the XC90 is the place I’d want to settle down. It’s that good; it deserves all the accolades received, and it was successful in vanquishing all my predisposed biases.

Rather than the traditional corn masa, tortillas at Nixta are made in house with discarded cauliflower stems. Fridays and Saturdays after 10 p.m., Bar Limon will feature a late-night menu of snacks, live music and industry specials. The menu wasn’t the only thing to get a makeover – the space itself barely resembles the former Old Standard, which was marked by muted wood tones. The interior has been transformed with a playful coral, seafoam-green and electric-blue color scheme. Small touches throughout the restaurant include potted plants, succulents and cacti as well as bright, colorful woven textiles.

Finding Neverland

‌Story:  Successful playwright J.M. Barrie enjoys regular visits to London’s Kensington Gardens, circa 1909, with his dog, Porthos. One day, after the painful failure of his latest play, Barrie befriends a woman named Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her four young sons there. He soon learns Sylvia is a widow raising the four lads alone, including the oldest, the very serious Peter. Barrie’s marriage to his actress wife, Mary, begins to suffer as he spends more time with Sylvia and her sons in the park. Meanwhile, his producer, Charles Frohman, informs Barrie that it’s time for him to produce another hit to fill Frohman’s hall and coffers as well. Barrie shows him a script he’s written, but after hearing Sylvia’s opinion of it, the playwright decides he needs something fresh and different, rather than a formulaic version of previous shows. As Barrie spends more time with the Davies clan, his marriage ends in divorce, and rumors of his relationship with Sylvia, although platonic, sweep London. Barrie, though, is unfazed by the criticism and continues his friendship with Sylvia and her sons, even as Sylvia’s health begins to deteriorate – and also against the wishes of her strong-willed mother, Mrs. du Maurier. While playing with the boys, who eventually are won over by this man-child’s zest for games and silliness, Barrie begins to shape his greatest work: Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. An elaborate production that includes scenes of flying, pirates, a crocodile and a flickering light called Tinker Bell, it’s an immediate hit. But will the ailing Sylvia live to see it? Highlights:  The story behind the story of Peter Pan is a refreshing and delightful concoction of highstepping choreography, intelligent lyrics and a lush, beautifully written score that make for an evening of engaging entertainment for children and adults alike. Handsomely mounted and energetically performed, Finding Neverland makes for an ideal holiday treat at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. Other Info:  For someone who has never liked anything associated with Peter Pan, not even in childhood, Finding Neverland, for me, was an unexpected and delightful treat. Writer James Graham based his book on David Magee’s screenplay for the 2004 film of the same name that starred Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, as well as Allan Knee’s play, The Man Who Was Peter Pan. Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy wrote the infectious music and witty lyrics that provide consistent enjoyment throughout the two acts and 2½ hours of this production. Memorable moments are plentiful, led by the dazzling “Circus of Your Mind” number that builds the show to a rousing crescendo shortly before the end of the first act. The title number, “Neverland,”

is a tender, affecting ballad sung poignantly by Kevin Kern as Barrie and Christine Dwyer as Sylvia, the latter in particular displaying a wonderfully clear and soaring soprano voice. Kern is a good fit as the genial but somewhat shy playwright, who seems thick as a brick to the gossip about him and the widow Davies, but who genuinely enjoys engaging her children in games and imagination. Dwyer well represents Sylvia’s wholesome and caring persona, although allusions to Sylvia’s health throughout the presentation portend a dark conclusion. There’s outstanding work by Tom Hewitt as Barrie’s friend and producer, Frohman, who is quick with a quip but also worried about keeping his company gainfully employed with a new and much-needed Barrie gem. Hewitt also is deliciously amusing as the villainous Captain Hook, who first comes to life as Barrie’s repressed alter ego. Joanna Glushak does a fine job as the officious Mrs. du Maurier, a lady of society who has no tolerance for her widowed daughter engaging in any shenanigans, real or imagined, with a married playwright, especially with the gossip that ensues. Crystal Kellogg capably portrays the frustrated Mary Barrie, and Noah Plomgren has fun as Mary’s foppish fling, Lord Cannan. The four Davies boys are being alternately played throughout the show’s run at The Fox by Jordan Cole, Finn Faulconer, Tyler Patrick Hennessy, Ben Krieger, Eli Tokash, Colin Wheeler and Mitchell Wray. On

By Mark Bretz

opening night, Krieger did a fine job portraying the overly serious Peter, still stinging from the death of his father; Faulconer was the happy-go-lucky George; Wray played the amenable Jack; and Cole was the impish, young Michael. Dee Tomasetta is a graceful Peter Pan, aided by Adrianne Chu as Wendy and Cameron Bond as the troupe’s Captain Hook. There are lavish costumes (including pirate garb) courtesy of Suttirat Anne Larlarb, sound design by Jonathan Deans, “illusions” by Paul Kieve, “air sculpting” by Daniel Wurtzel and flying effects by Production Resource Group. Fred Lassen’s music supervision enhances the wonderful score, with orchestrations by Simon Hale and musical direction by Ryan Cantwell. A special shoutout is deserved by choreographer Mia Michaels, whose exaggerated steps and sweeping moves are given wide, glorious expression by the ensemble. Finding Neverland is tender, affecting, amusing and rousing all at once. It’s a land you might very well want to visit to further brighten your holiday season.

and Amarone, to a dessert wine, Recioto. Amarone is made in a unique style dating back centuries, where vintners lay grapes on mats to dry; this shrivels the grapes, increases sugars and decreases water content for a more raisinlike effect. The vintners may dry the grapes after harvest, in September, until February. Doing so produces a bigger, bolder taste, for which Amarone is known. The style known as ripasso, which means “to pass through,” involves taking the lighter Valpolicella and passing it over the “must,” or pressed grapes leftover from the Amarone wine. Because the same grape varietals go into both wines, this works, resulting in a bigger, bolder Valpolicella. Food Pairings: Think red meats, game, roasts, stews, mushrooms, full-flavored pastas and aged cheeses.

N

ow that we’re all fully ensconced in the hectic hustle-and-bustle of the holiday season, it’s important to remember to take time to relax with family and friends – and what better way to do so than with a festive cocktail or two? This time of year, traditional drinks run the gamut, from effervescent sparkling wine cocktails to warm tipples designed to heat up cold winter nights. Below is a list of cocktails that draw on these themes and traditions; some are venerated classics – others, my takes on them. Keep in mind that these recipes are guidelines, not rules: Feel free to substitute ingredients and see what you come up with at home. Not crazy about rum? Try another dark spirit, such as bourbon. If gin isn’t your thing, substitute vodka. In place of dairy, try experimenting with alternatives such as coconut milk. Holiday cocktails are meant to be fun treats, so feel free to modify these recipes to fit your own tastes and celebrations.

n May, Herbie’s Vintage 72 in the Central West End announced plans to move to Clayton and take over the historic Cardwell’s space at the southwest corner of Brentwood and Maryland. Owner/chef Aaron Teitelbaum says when the restaurant’s lease was up in the Central West End, the opportunity came up. “It was one of those business opportunities we couldn’t pass up,” he says. “Because of the location and the facility, it was just like a perfect storm for us to make the move.” One big draw for Teitelbaum and his team was the 100-seat patio the new space in Clayton offers. “Having a patio is huge for us, and it’s something we didn’t have in the Central West End,” he says. In addition to the patio, the Cardwell’s space consists of the main dining area, four private dining rooms and an expanded bar. “I really think the décor has become a meld

between what was Cardwell’s and what Herbie’s is and was,” Teitelbaum says. So far, feedback on the new space has been “better than we could’ve hoped for,” he says. “The team has jelled, the food is coming out in a professional manner, and we’ve heard comments that the atmosphere is unmatched.” Teitelbaum notes that New Year’s Eve will be special at Herbie’s, with a festive environment and a Champagne toast at midnight, along with the special menu that will be available. “New Year’s Eve is full of special-occasion-type food,” says executive chef Chris Vomund. “We’ll do a special presentation on lobster, along with multiple oyster specials to give that rich, warm feeling you need to start the new year off right.” Aside from the holidays, the restaurant’s menu has turned into a “great seasonal representation of what

Herbie’s has always been about.” Vomund notes that although there are a few changes, the classics are ever-present. For lunch, they took some of the Cardwell’s favorites and incorporated them into the menu. Lunch also consists of fantastic salads and a smoked-brisket grilled cheese “that’s almost selling out every day.” “We have all the menu items people have become familiar with, along with seasonal changes to go with the classic dishes,” Vomund says. Teitelbaum says the Herbie’s crew is enthusiastic about how unbelievable the welcome from the city of Clayton has been. “It’s been busier than we expected, and we’re very excited,” he says. 8100 Maryland Ave., St. Louis, 314-769-9595, herbies.com
