We then go on an exquisite excursion aboard the opulent S.S. Catherine, which sailed on its maiden voyage through southern France—and we take you along for the ride! And one of America’s most preeminent dining clubs happens to be our very own Saint Louis Club. This year, the venerable institution marked its 50th year with a bash that was worth its weight in gold. Of course, one of the biggest highlights of our fall calendar here at LN is the Show House. This year’s home, a classic Colonial property in Ladue, truly was transformed into a show-stopper, thanks to the brilliant and inventive minds of the participating design teams. About the Cover Artist For the fourth time in a row, Kyle Lucks—local artist, independent travel director and frequent Ladue News contributor—has created an awe-inspiring watercolor to grace the cover of Elegant Living. BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN
LN: What is your favorite place in St. Louis? KL: Forest Park, no contest! I live only 2 miles away in Clayton, so I ride my bike there at least once a week. I usually make a point to stop in front of the Art Museum to take in the view of Art Hill and the Grand Basin. Life slows down in that moment. LN: Who are some of your favorite artists? KL: Watercolor masters Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet and John Lovett. I’m also inspired by Stephen Holland’s sports paintings and many of the Impressionists, especially Degas. LN: Where do you go in St. Louis to find inspiration? KL: I start with Forest Park, since it offers so much diversity and beauty—especially with the changing seasons. Every so often, I duck into the Saint Louis Art Museum to revisit our masterpieces, as well as head down to the Missouri Botanical Garden when the irises bloom. On top of that, I am inspired by everyday life around the city, and I always have my camera handy in case something catches my eye.

What do a 91-year-old bridge player, a nurse-entrepreneur and a former Division I athlete have in common? by Shirley Ballantine, age 91
W
hen I moved to St. Louis four years ago to be closer to my daughter, Laura Miller, she said she had a surprise for me.
Did she want to join my bridge group? Had she gotten me the latest John Verdon mystery? No. Laura wanted me to go with her to train at a place called 20 Minutes to Fitness. All it would require, she promised, was one 20-minute workout, once a week. A 20-minute workout? I wondered. What kind of results could I possibly expect in just 20 minutes a week? Look, I just celebrated my 91st birthday. I don’t have a lot of time to waste on things that don’t work.
But my daughter persisted. She, after all, is the nurse who, with her husband, introduced this safe, medically based approach to fitness to St. Louis 11 years ago. It would be good for me, she promised. I would work out on special physical therapy equipment. A trainer would coach me the entire time, tailoring the workout to my needs. The muscle strength I would build, she said, would allow me to remain in my condo, rather than move into assisted living or a nursing home.
My independence is important to me; I'veseentoomanyofmyfriendsloseit. Suddenly, Laura had my attention. My independence is important to me; I’ve seen too many of my friends lose it. Laura explained why. After age 30, you see, most people lose eight to 10 pounds of muscle a decade. By the time they reach my age, well, you do the math. There’s not much muscle left, unless you do something to maintain it. Still, I wasn’t sure. Not only does Laura train here, but so does my granddaughter, Alexa, a former collegiate swimmer who is now a busy executive and entrepreneur. With their demanding work and travel schedules, the two of them need a workout like this that they can fit into their active lives. One other thing: both Laura and Alexa are in terrific shape. How could I possibly keep up with them? Not by sitting around in an assisted living center, that’s for sure! That’s why, for the last four years, I’ve been spending 20 minutes each Tuesday morning at 20 Minutes to Fitness. It helps keep me young. Strength-wise, Laura and Alexa may be miles ahead of me. But I dare you to find many 91-year-old women who can leg press as much as I do. My bridge game isn’t bad, either.

NNE ALLRED AND DREW LAMMERT ADDED HINTS of Southern charm to their nuptials for an affair that was fun and carefree. The couple were “in the same circle” in high school: Anne went to Villa Duchesne and Drew attended De Smet Jesuit High School. The two went away to different colleges and it wasn’t until 2010, when they reunited at a charity event, that they began dating long-distance. Drew, a lawyer, was in St. Louis, and Anne, a television news anchor, was in Boston. Eventually, Anne returned to St. Louis to work for KSDK. And on Valentine’s Day last year, she came home after work to find a surprise from Drew. “I had lit 250 votive candles throughout the house, and I got rose petals, chocolates, cheese and Champagne,” he recalls. “But I wanted to trick her. So when she came in, I pulled out this long, narrow bracelet box so that she wouldn’t think she was getting a ring. When she opened the box, inside was a bracelet with a heart charm that said, Will you marry me?” Drew then got on one knee and pulled out a ring. The couple wed the next May, in an intimate ceremony at the Church of the Annunziata. A bagpiper playing as guests left the church gave a nod to the mother of the bride’s Irish heritage. For the reception, the couple drew inspiration from South Carolina culture, where the bride’s family vacations. Anne got the recipe of the famous jumbo lump crab salad from her

The cocktail bar was dubbed ‘Anne and Drew’s Spiked Southern Juice Bar,’ and included Plantar’s Punch, angry Arnold Palmers and mint juleps. Tied to each guest’s escort card were pecan pralines from Anne’s favorite Charleston candy store. Not planning on having floral arrangements be a big focus of the wedding, Anne says she was blown away after hearing the outside-of-the-box ideas of her florist, RW Designs, and the arrangements ended up being her favorite part of the reception décor. “I couldn’t believe the centerpieces, they were so beautiful,” she says. “It was like Charleston and Hawaii had a baby.” Anne and Drew chose the wedding date based on the availability of their favorite band, Griffin and the Gargoyles. “We had heard them at another wedding years before,” Anne says. “We said, If we ever get married, we’re getting them. They were the first thing I booked.” The bride and her father entertained guests with their ‘hybrid’ dance, which started as My Wish by Rascal Flatts and turned into Soul Man. “We’re horrible dancers, but we think we’re really good,” she laughs. LED-lit shutter aviators that changed colors to the beat of the music kept the dance floor alive. The couple traveled to Hawaii for two weeks for their honeymoon, where they relaxed, rented a Jeep and explored the islands. “Drew makes everything an adventure,” Anne says.

INDSEY FARR AND RANDY ABBOTT MIXED CLASSIC traditions with modern details to celebrate their love and marriage. The couple met several years ago while playing on the same team in a social kickball league, and began dating soon after. To propose, Randy took Lindsey to the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta, where the couple lives, under the guise of looking at the Christmas lights. When he pulled her aside to a secluded area and bent down on one knee, Lindsey says she was taken aback, and didn’t give the response he was expecting. “I said, No!, like in shock, I was so flustered, Oh my gosh, this isn’t happening,” she says. “Then I realized what I had said, and said, That’s not what I meant! He proceeded to ask me to marry him, and I said, Yes!” The couple said ‘I do,’ with traditional vows during an October ceremony at the exquisite Christ Church Cathedral. The bride wore a lace Rivini gown with a floor-length veil as she walked down the aisle. While searching for a reception venue, Lindsey fell in love with the grand architecture and modern feel of the Old Post Office downtown. “We picked that first, and then picked the vibe [of the reception] around that,” she says. “Everything had a modern look but with a bit of historical, old-school charm.” An aficionado of cooking and family-heirloom recipes, the bride spent the week before the wedding making the favors, her great-grandmother’s pecan taffies—more than 400 in all. Lindsey says she worked with her florist, Wildflowers, to create purple, peach and offwhite flowers with hints of gold for an elegant but updated look. The purple flowers cascading down the cake matched the bridesmaids’ deep-purple dresses, and guests hit the dance floor lit by purple and pink lights and floral projections, while Galaxy Band played a range of tunes, from Big Band to Lady Gaga. Lindsey says she was most impressed by her new husband’s toast, which he gave during the reception. “It was unplanned and unexpected,” she says. “He literally wrote it while he was waiting at the church, and it was just perfect. It was real and heartfelt, and it touched me.” Listening to the advice of others, and happy they did, the couple waited a week before going on their honeymoon to Paris, Venice and Rome. “My husband hadn’t been to any of those places before, and I was really excited to share Paris with him because it’s very special to me,” Lindsey says. “Mostly, we did sightseeing—and eating lots of macarons.”

T
HE LUCK OF THE IRISH WAS WITH CORI FRANK AND Sean Murphy on August 2, when they wed at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Some might say it was also luck that brought the couple together. They dated briefly during high school, and kept in touch in college. Sean joined the Navy after college; and in 2011, he returned to St. Louis on leave to celebrate Mardi Gras. He and Cori reconnected at a friend’s house before heading down to Soulard for the festivities. “We started texting again, and I tricked her into flying out to Virginia to see me,” Sean says. “We started dating, and the rest is history.” Last September, Sean took Cori down to the Boat House in Forest Park, where the two headed out to the Grand Basin in a paddleboat. After he proposed, and Cori said yes, they started paddling back toward another surprise. “My plan was that [our families and friends] would be waiting on the patio when we got back,” he laughs. “But she can’t really see very well, and couldn’t see anyone.” Finally, someone from the patio yelled, Did she say ‘yes’?, and that’s when Cori

saw their loved ones waiting to celebrate. The very next day, the couple, both fans of the St. Louis Blues, contacted and booked the Charles Glenn Band. “All we really cared about at first was the band,” Cori says. “We knew we wanted it to be a big party with everyone having a good time, lots of drinking and lots of dancing. It evolved and kind of snowballed into an Irish theme.” Celebrating the couple’s shared heritage, Cori’s bridesmaids wore Kelly-green dresses, and the groomsmen wore cummerbunds with needle-pointed shamrocks. The bride gifted her soon-to-be husband with clover cufflinks, and a bagpiper played as the couple entered their reception. Sean says the most memorable part of the evening was when Charles Glenn surprised everyone by singing The Saints Go Marching In, before leading into The Star Spangled Banner. “Literally everybody was singing,” he says. “It was so crazy and so loud.” The next morning, the couple left for their honeymoon in the St. John Virgin Islands.

OR THE FINAL EVENT (OF EIGHT) TO CELEBRATE their marriage, Afnan Tariq planned an evening of family, music, elegance and cultural traditions for his new wife, Ayesha Ahmed. Afnan and Ayesha met at an after-party at New York Fashion Week a few years ago, and began dating soon after. Afnan proposed last year while the couple was at Disney World. “Ayesha is a big fan of Disney, so I rented a special boat to propose during the fireworks.” Both the bride and groom’s parents are from Punjab, Pakistan. In the Islamic culture, weddings consist of multiple events, some ceremonial and some more celebratory. Ayesha and Afnan’s families celebrated with eight events over three weekends in St. Louis and Boston, “with outfit changes for each of them, too!” Ayesha laughs. The events include a mehndi (a night of song and dance), a nikkah (the religious ceremony), and a shaadhi (the giving away of the bride). For the valima, which is the reception hosted in the groom’s city, Afnan enlisted the help of his sister and parents. The Tariq family drew inspiration from Afnan’s time spent living in Washington, D.C., and worked with the florist to deck the hall with thousands of cherry blossoms. Exclusive Events created a custom-made chandelier dripping with the blooms. Guests enjoyed a ‘mocktail’ hour with stations offering traditional Pakistani and Indian street snacks called chaat, as well as seafood, cheese and grilled meats. The Tariqs also hired a consulting Pakistani chef to work with the chef at The RitzCarlton, creating traditional and authentic food. The newlyweds enjoyed their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight, before breaking it down on the dance floor to Indio-Pak-Canadian entertainer Josh the Band, as well as a DJ and a musician playing the dohl, a traditional Pakistani instrument. Ayesha says her favorite part of the evening was seeing the space for the first time. “Afnan had been telling me about it for so long, and when we walked into the hall and saw all the effort he and his family put into it, it was breathtaking,” she says. The couple enjoyed an around-the-world honeymoon to Morocco, the Maldives, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

LOUIS’ FASHION FORERUNNERS GATHered at the Ladue home of gala chairs Anjali and Atul Kamra for a Gala Kickoff Cocktail Party in support of the Saint Louis Fashion Fund. “We wanted to share information about the fashion incubator we are trying to launch to support designers, and bring the business of fashion back to St. Louis,” says Rungolee designer Anjali Karma, a Fashion Fund board member who is co-chairing the inaugural gala with her husband. The evening also focused on celebrating the gala’s honorees: Derek Blasberg and Karlie Kloss. Some 80 guests were in attendance at the late-summer soirée. An eclectic menu was created by Ben Poremba from Olio and Elaia, says Kamra, which included hand-rolled sushi, charred eggplant dip, cold cuts, olives and more. “We wanted to serve light and delicious bites, highlighting cuisines from across the globe.” Peppered throughout the home were floral arrangements created by Kamra using cuts from her own garden. “The great mix of people from all walks of life who came to hear about this new venture made this a special night,” Kamra says. “There was such a great buzz and excitement as we shared info about the fashion history of this town, and the excitement around bringing it back to St. Louis.”

AWAKEN FROM AN UNEXPECTED NAP ON THE SUN Deck of the S.S. Catherine cruise ship. We are docked in southern France, on the Rhône River, just outside the Medieval walls of Avignon. A tarp over my lounge chair shades the sun and a gentle breeze from the dormant mistral, the famous wind of Provence, whisks away the heat. I had been replaying the morning sightseeing through groves of sunflowers and perfect picturesque villages graced with startlingly blue sky and lavender-scented air. Perhaps the dreamy glory of the moment

BY SUSAN KATZMAN and memory lulled me to sleep—or maybe it was the rosé served at lunch. We are on an eight-day/seven-night cruise titled ‘Burgundy & Provence.’ Our ship, the S.S. Catherine, travels between Avignon and Lyon on the Rhône River and forks along the Saône for a brief stretch into Burgundy. Everything about this cruise delights. We dock at legendary cities and at each stop, the ship provides local guides, proficient in English and charm, to lead sightseeing excursions geared to

a variety of physical abilities. We tour cities and tiny Medieval villages, as well as famous gardens, castles and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Most cruise ships traveling the Rhone and Saône follow a similar itinerary. And most river cruise ships are similar in size, built with widths to move through locks and heights to fit under bridges. But the S.S. Catherine is the fairest of them all, distinguishing herself with both lavish decor and luscious cuisine. Uniworld, a boutique river cruise line, launched the S.S. Catherine earlier this year, and without a designer’s vocabulary, I can only describe the ship’s decor as an over-the-top, Marie Antoinette-opulent wow! Murano glass—in sculptures, chandeliers and lime-colored lattice work covering mirrored walls—dominates the decor. Silks and velvets cover furniture and windows in public areas and the 74 staterooms and six suites; and walls throughout wear an assortment of luxury fabrics. Framed art (mostly contemporary purchased at auction

houses) fills hallways, but particularly notable are works commissioned for the ship, such as the stunning white porcelain mural of exotic birds and fruit behind the reception desk, and the vividly colored glass and porcelain jungle scenes covering walls around the indoor swimming pool. The Catherine holds 159 passengers and 57 staff. Staterooms occupy each of the three main decks and offer assorted amenities according to category. But even staterooms in the least-expensive category are decked out with style and feature Savoir of England beds, flat-screen TVs and marble bathrooms, complete with L’Occitane en Provence products. Suites have additional amenities such as room service (not available to other guests who must fetch their own wake-up coffee or tea from stations located at various spots on the ship). Public rooms include an assortment of lounges and bars, a laundry area, fitness center, boutique, spa and a large graceful dining room. We officially dine three times a day—unofficially, more.

Breakfast and lunch buffets offer an assortment of familiar international foods intermixed with local specialties. The more formally served dinners dress menus with French-accented dishes of a quality and artistry that seduces one to indulge. Wine matches the Bar du Leopard food, and the ship could be viewed as a luscious laboratory for sampling delights of the region, often only available locally. We sometimes sail at night and sometimes during the day. Onboard activities vary, but frankly, we loved just sitting and watching the changing scenery as we glided through French landscapes celebrated by painters and poets, oenophiles and gourmets. One day, the riverbank yields green pastures with grazing Charolais cattle and picnickers worthy of Monet. Another day, steep green hills, every inch packed with grapevines. And

still other days, Van Gogh and Cézanne scenes of earthy villages graced with gnarled olive trees, towering cypress and distant mountains. The S.S. in front of the Catherine’s name is not a nautical term, but a Uniworld one meaning ‘Super Ship.’ Initials also could stand for ‘sensational,’ ‘stunning’ or ‘sweet sybaritic’—a description of life aboard the vessel. Travel agents will say that most tourists looking for a European river cruise first choose a destination and then a ship. I would recommend the opposite: Head for the S.S. Catherine and go wherever she goes, for the joie de vivre will not just meet your vacation dreams, but surely exceed them. THE SAINT LOUIS CLUBS THROUGH THE YEARS 1878 The original Saint Louis Club is housed at the Lindell Hotel on the corner of Sixth Street and Washington Avenue, and soon moves to its own building at 1532 Washington Ave.
1883 A new Saint Louis Club is built at Ewing Avenue and Locust Street, the heart of the St. Louis business district at the time.
1897 Madame Jeanne Chaudruc, an ancestor of St. Louis founder Pierre Laclede, breaks a bottle of Champagne during the Pierre Laclede Center rededication in 1984. archivist Robyn Caldwell. In 2010, President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush attended a Saint Louis Club banquet during a national book tour. President George H. W. Bush, vice presidents Joe Biden and Dick Cheney, Mitt Romney and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas also have dined at the Club. Stars of the stage and screen also have graced the former and current incarnations of the Club through the years, including Sammy Davis Jr., Paul Newman, Mia Farrow, John Goodman, Raymond Burr and Tony Curtis. Legends of the sports world visited the Clubs, as well, from former member Stan Musial to Ozzie Smith, Whitey Herzog, Bob Wine and bourbon bottled for Gibson and Matt Holliday, and Jack and Joe the original Saint Louis Club in the early 1900s Buck, Mike Shannon, Brett Hull and Wayne Gretsky. Today, the current Club remains a prominent business and social gathering place with ballrooms and meetings rooms to accommodate intimate gatherings to large events with as many as 1,200 guests. During the past five years, remodels of each of the Club’s 14th, 15th and 16th floors have taken it to the next level. As the Saint Louis Club looks to the future, Saint Louis Club member it has plans for even more improvements, Gene Beare and President while carrying on its rich history of fine dining George H. W. Bush and superior service from seasoned staff in an elegant atmosphere for the most prominent guests around the city and the world. “We want to move the Club into the 21st century,” notes Helane Bernath, director of marketing and membership. “We always want to keep one foot in the past and one foot in the future.”

The 2014 Ladue News Show House at 34 Briarcliff will help give a voice to young patients across the region. Proceeds from the fourth annual home tour will benefit Autism Speaks and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Here, learn more about the impact of these worthy organizations. AUTISM SPEAKS Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disorder in the nation: One in 68 children is diagnosed as having an autism-spectrum disorder. In response, Autism Speaks is helping autistic kids—and adults—live as independently as possible. Founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of an autistic child, Autism Speaks is a worldwide leader in awareness and research of autism. The organization is dedicated to finding the causes, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism-spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of those with autism and their families. Locally, the organization’s fundraisers—including Walk Now for Autism Speaks, which raises about $800,000 each fall—are helping to make strides in autism research and education. In part, the research dollars have allowed for earlier diagnosis—from 18 to 24 months, notes executive director Angela Dettmers. “The earlier the diagnosis, the better—then they can get into occupational and speech therapy that can help them reach their full potential.” The organization also funds $25,000 in local grants. Among
benefactors is the Social College at Pathways to Independence. At the college, adults with complex learning disabilities improve social skills that help them form personal and work relationships, and engage with the community. For more information, visit autismspeaks.org.
SSM CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER As one of the nation’s top pediatric health care institutes, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center treats 200,000 kids a year—regardless of their families’ ability to pay. With 60 pediatric specialties, the hospital provides the highest quality health care to patients in the St. Louis area and around the world. To expand this impact, Cardinal Glennon recently opened a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “It features new individual patient rooms and a family waiting area to provide comfort to families who are visiting,” notes Sandy Koller, executive director of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. And in June, the hospital opened the Costas Center. Named after board of governors member Bob Costas, the center offers young cancer patients top medical care through an experienced team of doctors, nurses and additional health professionals. In support of its mission, Cardinal Glennon holds multiple annual fundraisers, including Homers for Health, Glennon Sunday, Tree of Hope, the Glennon Guild Fashion Show and the Glennon Card. More than $16.5 million was raised last year.

HE ARCHITECTURE OF THE COLONIAL PROPerty at 34 Briarcliff in Ladue reflects its formal Mid-Century design roots with notable features such as a stately columned portico, floor-to-ceiling windows and a classic double-door entry. Just inside, a compact and rather plain central foyer and staircase leads to a second-floor hallway. It was interior designer Tamsin Mascetti’s job to bring both of these areas into the 21st century, while respecting the essence of a well-loved and lived-in family home. “The house brought to mind someone’s beloved grandmother, who, while showing her age, is still active and wants to update her look,” Mascetti observes. “I selected the foyer and upstairs gallery because the first impression of a home sets the tone for the entire visceral experience for both visitors and family.” Drawing inspiration from accent pillows covered in vibrantly colored embroidery from Osborne & Little, Mascetti played off the fabric’s warm cream background, accented by navy, coral and plum. On the foyer walls, she asked artist John Bubenik to hand-paint an oversized gold textured pattern on a cream ground, adding a touch of warmth and glamour. To take the focus VENDORS off the dated parquet floor, KDR Designer Showrooms Mascetti covered it with a Design and Restoration LLC spectacular Tufenkian Oriental The Color Craftsmen— rug in an indigo and cream John Bubenik colorway. Seating for two is Design and Detail provided by Lillian August Kodner Gallery chairs, between which Mascetti placed a quatrefoil mirrorBendas Oriental Rug Co. topped table. The centerpiece Donna Goro Designs is the contemporary textured Benjamin Moore Celestial chest by Barbara Barry for Baker Furniture. Upstairs, Mascetti transformed the dark, nondescript hallway that was sorely “in need of TLC and a fresh look” into a colorful art gallery. She removed tired old draperies to let in natural light, painted over a dull beige wall with a beautiful blue-gray, covered the old parquet floor with an antique oriental runner, and hung contemporary art pieces from the Kodner Gallery. An iron-and-mercury glass Currey & Co. chandelier was installed on the ceiling, which along with a pair of wall-mounted silver-leaf sconces, imbues the space with a soft, warm glow. To encourage family members to linger and enjoy the new view, Mascetti added a console and Champagne-colored metallic leather seating accented with hot-pink floral abstract pillows.

The Great Room

HEN TEDDY KARL AND HIS TEAM first saw the great room, they were favorably impressed by its generous size, open feel, and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in an abundance of natural light. The room also had a wood floor original to the house, as well as a fireplace with pickled-wood mantel that they chose to keep intact. The subtle pink undertones “struck me as very Palm Beach, circa 1960s or even early ’70s,” Karl says. “I’m sure in its heyday, the room was very sharp.” Circa 2014, this formal room once again is looking its best, thanks to the team’s fresh vision and redesign for a modern

family with an appreciation for old-school classics. The style is updated-traditional, employing a comfortable but sophisticated palette of warm gold, yellow and rich reds set against classic ivory walls. Fabric and accessory choices reflect a refined eye, and a fondness for chinoisserie and fine English porcelain. The designers envisioned the great room as a place for intimate gatherings, as well as larger get-togethers. The primary conversation area is centered in front of the fireplace, above which they placed a fine, gold-leaf roundel mirror. Seating consists of a high-back neutral mohair sofa, flanked by two skirted slipper chairs on one side and a settee on the other.

At the KDR Designer Showrooms other end, the designers saw Ambler Art Group the perfect spot for a grand piano, as well as a reading nook, Hickory Chair furnishing it with a wing-back Kravet chair and floor lamp. Carver’s Guild “ We k n e w t h i s r o o m Mottahedeh needed to be multi-purpose, Visual Comfort and would likely wear many Butler hats,” Karl says of the furniture selections and floor plan. “The home doesn’t have a huge eat-in kitchen and the family room is not enormous, so we imagined that any entertaining would take place in this room. We wanted it to be dressed up so it could serve as a formal living room, but also a place where Dad could sit and read the newspaper while the kids played games. In other words, we wanted an approachable room that cleaned up nicely.”

UCKED AWAY IN THE BACK OF THE HOME AT 34 Briarcliff is a classic 1950s-era den, complete with a vintage built-in wet bar, brick fireplace, pine paneling, parquet flooring, and picture windows providing an unobstructed view of the expansive grounds beyond. “I immediately realized the opportunity to glam up the space with a contemporary lodge look,” says interior designer Jeanne Lashmett, who saw past the outdated surfaces and envisioned the room’s future as a cozy and chic retreat for family life, as well as entertaining. Lashmett says the elongated dimensions of the room also suggested the creation of two distinct zones: In zone one, she created a cozy conversation area near the bar and fireplace, and furnished it with a vibrant orange Italian leather sectional sofa, backless bar stools, and two shimmering gold ottomans that provide additional seating, as well as storage. A second zone near the window is furnished with a faux cowhide rug, and reproduction Eames chair and ottoman for relaxing and quiet contemplation. Certainly one of the bigger challenges presented by the room

was dealing with the expansive wall space, which included both paneled and unpaneled areas. For this, Lashmett worked with a decorative painter, who covered the unpaneled walls in a rich mocha color, over which a custom-made geometric wood VENDORS wall sculpture was installed. The paneled walls surrounding the bar Amini’s and fireplace were painted with a Crazy Walls rich black enamel that gives them a DeirDre Rohr sleek, modern quality, perfect for the Hartnett Construction contemporary look of the space. Lashmett Immerse removed the old doors that concealed br2 Design Solutions the bar when not in use, so that it now is an integral part of the room’s design. She gave the bar a new lease on life with a beautifully faux-finished back wall, countertop and a new sink and faucet that provide a touch of ‘bling.’

The Dining Room

HE DINING ROOM IN THIS YEAR’S SHOW HOUSE easily could accommodate a matching table, sideboard and six chairs in the classic Queen Anne, Regency or Chippendale style. In fact, such furnishings would be expected in such a traditional home. But for designers Christy North and Tracy Miles, that predictability is anachronistic and somewhat out of touch with modern lifestyles. Hence, instead of decorating en suite, the designers assembled a mélange of pieces referencing different times and places, but all working in harmony with the home’s formal traditional architecture. You might call it the New Traditional. “Classic, sophisticated, yet welcoming—that’s what we tried to achieve with the dining room design, which marries traditional forms with modern-day lifestyles,” North says. “The soft gray tones and warm finishes create an inviting atmosphere for friends and family to gather and enjoy a cozy meal or a lavish dinner party.” The urbane dining table and neutral upholstered armless chairs are from Century’s Metro Lux collection. “The finish we chose is one of Century’s new painted finishes named Prairie, which offers an updated look on a classic design,”
Miles explains. The comfortable host chairs, from Century’s Bridgeton collection, are upholstered in an updated geometric pattern. Juxtaposed with the Metro Lux pieces are the stunning VENDORS Shanghai credenza and the Benjamin Moore Harbin Display curio from Century Design Ltd. Century’s Chin Hua collection Chandra and featuring fiery patterned veneers and stunning hardware reminiscent of beautifully handcrafted jewelry. The window treatments are a linen-look fabric with a satin embroidered geometric top-stich detail. Completing the modern-day dining room are pieces of contemporary art and a simple but striking contemporary drum pendant where an ornate chandelier once hung.

The Master Suite

HE MASTER BEDROOM WAS TRANSFORMED from tasteful traditional to frankly fabulous by designer David Deatherage, who specializes in highdesign vintage furnishings. “The house was built in the Mid-Century era, but instead of organic modern, it had formal aspirations,” Deatherage observes. “It’s Champagne instead of a martini; Beverly Hills in the 1950s, as opposed to Palm Springs.” Deatherage’s starting point was the tall, custom-made headboard covered in a Kravet Couture turquoise silk, which

he describes as having a “Moroccan vibe with a Dorothy Draper punch. From there, a design narrative evolved: a very light and feminine room with my trademark dose of glamour suitable for a couturier or fashionista, of which I certainly know a few.” The room’s color scheme of turquoise, robin’s egg blue, and white mixed with silver accents and crystal is “eleganté and decorative, but not overly ornate,” Deatherage says. Lacquer finishes and satin fabrics enhance the glamorous atmosphere. As for the piece de resistance, there isn’t one, but several. Take, for example, the matching pair of white Dorothy Draper

serpentine commodes at either end of the room. Above each is a Donghia Contessa mirror, accented with Venetian gold rosettes. Flanking the headboard is a pair of Johan Tapp 1940s lacquered cabinets with oversize hardware. And instead of bedside lamps, Deatherage crowned the bedside cabinets with silver and crystal sconces by Mid-Century interior designer Tommi Parzinger. On the wall opposite the bed, an Italian silver ribbon-framed mirror and white marble Art Deco console with nickel scroll supports has been pressed into service as a vanity. Lucite curtain rods and white silk drapes at the windows keep the room light and airy. Because no fashionista should be without a beautiful closet, Deatherage outfitted this one with Lucite clothing rods and 24-karat gold-plated hangers from a Los Angeles estate. “To complete the look of the closet, I selected a 1940s cabinet with a pink leather diamond-quilted door in a nod to Chanel,” he notes. “Above it, I placed a French Mid-Century mirror and, to the side, a slender Italian brass side chair, which is the perfect perch for putting on shoes.”

HE AMY STUDEBAKER DESIGN TEAM TRANSformed a pleasant, but nondescript second-floor bedroom into a glamorous lady’s dressing room, filled with antique and vintage French furnishings— or those that simply look the part. With its two eastfacing windows, the room is bathed in morning light, making it a cheerful spot that’s ideal for putting on makeup and

getting dressed. In keeping with the firm’s trademark style, Studebaker designers kept the room’s color palette simple, clean and understated, letting the elegant, high-quality furniture and fabrics do most of the talking. “We worked with a palette of creamy whites, natural linen and cottons,” Studebaker says, noting that touches of old gold gilt impart an ornamental quality, while natural fibers keep

Of course, a lady’s dressing room isn’t complete without a vanity, which Studebaker’s team created

At the end of a busy day, Studebaker notes the small European-style room provides “a beautiful and calming space in which to prepare for an evening out at a gala or some decidedly special event.”

HE GUEST BEDROOM IN THIS YEAR’S SHOW House is, well, simply irresistible. True to form, the designers at Diane Breckenridge Interiors didn’t skimp on a thing, resulting in beautiful sleeping quarters that envelop the lucky inhabitant in layers of softness and comfort. “The room has wonderful natural light, great wall space to showcase our accessorizing skills, and a wonderful closet space for which we had big plans,” explains Colleen Ertl, a member of the design team. “We approached it as a place for an honored guest to stay, but as the design began to take shape, we also realized it could also be a space for a young adult—a great escape from an otherwise very traditional home.” In keeping with the Breckenridge design process, the room’s narrative began with the selection of fabrics, which, in turn, dictated the mood and color palette. In this case, a gorgeous blue, sunny turquoise, chartreuse and ecru conspired to create a sophisticated, upbeat look. A turquoise-painted iron bed frame has pride of place in front of the window, which is framed by striped floorto-ceiling draperies with contrast chartreuse pleated flange.

“Since the rest of our room has so much color in it, we wanted to temper it with fluffy, ecru-colored bedding that we accented with trim to get just the look we wanted,” Ertl explains. “It’s the kind of bed you just want to sink into.” Nearby, a comfortable upholstered VENDORS chair sits next to a beautiful ecruDiane Breckenridge colored chest, which is personalized Interiors Workroom with beautiful accessories and a lamp Fabricut that serves to accentuate the room’s Grady’s Antique color scheme. Refinishing One of the most unique features Koch Brothers is the closet, which the Breckenridge designers transformed from a dull Metro Lighting utilitarian space to a delightful dressing nook. “We removed the shelves and rod, painted the interior the same sunny turquoise as our bed frame, and installed a wall-to-wall desk skirted in blue tulle,” Ertl says. The desk is paired with an attractive vanity chair and stylized French framed mirror that reflects the beautiful scene beyond.

The Bonus Room

T FIRST GLANCE, THE ORIGINAL SPACE reminded the June Roesslein team of an old-time ice-cream parlor, according to Smith, who, along with McGovern, designed what’s being labeled the ‘bonus room’ in this year’s Show House. The trim, chair rail and shutters had been painted bright red, and the walls were covered with red-and-tan-striped wallpaper. Café curtains had the unfortunate effect of preventing most of the available natural light from entering the small room. Additionally, the chair rail visually cut the walls in half and made the ceiling feel lower than its actual 8-foot height. On the upside, the room featured a fireplace with a pretty dark wood mantel, a vintage wood floor and attractive millwork that could be transformed into an architectural asset, albeit after many coats of paint. “We thought the space would make a great reading room and a place for family game nights and entertainment,” Smith explains. “Once we established the room’s purpose, the design came VENDORS easily. Between them sits an octagonal table with pen-shell top on a rattan base with leather bindings, adding a bit of an islandplantation vibe to the room. The plantation cherry-finished game table’s inset top reverses to reveal a chess/checkerboard, while a zebra-patterned chest of drawers in the corner injects an unexpected exotic pattern and provides a spot for some low-level lighting. The room is enveloped in a soft-green grasscloth wallcovering that imparts a subtle texture to the walls, while sheer curtain panels hung with wrought-iron hardware both soften and frame the window. Above it all hangs a Mid-Century style bronze and Parisian gold-finished ceiling fixture that provides additional low-level ambient light. “It was a pleasure to design this space where family memories bloom and conversations flourish,” McGovern concludes.

HE 2014 Ladue News SHOW HOUSE SITS ON A sweeping 1-acre lot that was sorely in need of landscape design. Beyond routine maintenance, precious little had been done to the grounds by way of gardening or landscaping for some time. “Having a blank slate to work with was great,” says Graeler, who relished the opportunity to bring to life his vision for the property, rather than working around an existing plan. “I loved the fact that it allowed us to create something

unique that fits the architectural features of the home.” In keeping with the basic principle of residential landscape design, Graeler first set out to draw the eye to the home’s entryway. He accomplished this with a border of boxwood and liriope along the curved walkway that leads from the driveway to the front porch. He also softened the home’s horizontal brick façade with the addition of boxwood and hydrangea bushes, as well as masses of bright mums in seasonal fall colors. At the corners of the house, he placed tall Green Knight Spruce trees,
which draw the eye upward. Providing a warm welcome at the front door are two large concrete planters filled with cheerful blooming plants. In the backyard, an old, somewhat remote and therefore seldom-used brick patio posed Graeler with his biggest design challenge. “The patio would be better utilized if it was closer to VENDORS the back door,” he explains. “That Earthworks said, the challenge was to create a Pacific Home & Garden feeling of proximity to the house Anamese and continuity with the rest of the yard. Adding the outdoor fireplace Al’s Garden Art and creating a path that leads from the driveway to the patio was just the ticket to pull it all together. I also found that massing plants like holly, boxwood, laurel, liriope, lilac and hydrangea, as well as a cluster of dogwood, Japanese maple and annuals, for pops of color, created the right atmosphere.”
