RAVEL IS ONE OF MY PASSIONS. THERE IS NO bigger thrill than experiencing another world and immersing oneself in its culture. And then, there are the jaw-dropping sights: I marveled at the sight of the Eiffel Tower; I got verklempt while gazing at the cerulean waters of the Caribbean Sea from atop a mountain; and I definitely looked up from our convertible when I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge for the very first time. But as I’ve come to discover over the years, there is somewhat of a downside to discovering that dream destination: You keep coming back for more—not that there’s anything wrong with that. In our Travel pages, we return to one of my favorite escapes: Napa Valley; in particular, the idyllic town of St. Helena, the place where winemaking in the region began more than 150 years ago; which brings us to another one of my passions: fine wine. And while no trip to St. Helena is worthwhile without sampling some of the world’s most superior vintages; our

attention, this time around, turned to what it was that made the community special. We didn’t have to look too far: We were welcomed at our lodging of choice, the Wydown Hotel, by owner Mark Hoffmeister. Mark is a former St. Louisan who combined his background in finance and enthusiasm for architecture, design and hotels into St. Helena’s next big thing. Named after the Wydown Boulevard, Mark’s exquisite boutique hotel has all the right welcoming touches—just like most of the other small businesses in town. Mark fondly recalls living in Clayton in his 20s, and running up and down Wydown to train for the Chicago Marathon. It seems there would be plenty of time to gather one’s thoughts and plan for something big while long-distance running, and I suspect Mark did a lot of thinking in those days. After trying his hand in investment banking in San Francisco, and at equity research at AG Edwards in St. Louis, Mark purchased an historic building on St. Helena’s Main Street in 2010, and began his labor of love. You can say the Wydown is a hit. Mark modestly tells me his 12-room hotel gets a “fair amount of guests,” but obviously, the people want more. The Wydown recently completed an expansion of its lobby, and Mark has plans to extend the property and maybe add a few more rooms. While Mark has his hands full with the Wydown, he’s quick to say what’s most important: family. Mark, who grew up in South County, still makes it home often. His dad, Jim, worked for Anheuser-Busch; his mom, Sheila, is a local author. Mark and his wife, Kristin, are raising their family of three daughters. You can’t help but cheer for the hometown boy. So, yes, it’s safe to say we will be back to St. Helena for more—not that there’s anything wrong with that.

ABOUT THE COVER This season’s Elegant Living cover highlights the living room of 4967 Pershing Place, one of the homes featured on the 2015 Central West End Association House and Garden Tour. The tours, on May 30 and 31, will give guests an inside look at eight historic homes and gardens in one of St. Louis’ most esteemed residential enclaves. (For full coverage, turn to page 54.) The cover image is a watercolor created by Clayton-based artist Kyle Lucks. For more information on the house tour, visit thecwe.org. O MARK ITS FIVE-YEAR m i l e s to n e , L i f t fo r L i fe A c a d e m y ’s C e l e b r a t i n g Success Spring Fashion Show was held in grand style at The Ritz-Carlton. The highlight of the afternoon was a runway show that featured original fashion designs from academy students, who have been hard at work throughout the school year to recycle and up-cycle material into their own stylish vision. Each of the 21 participating students had the opportunity to model their creations before local designer Laura Kathleen Baker, who launched the school’s fashion design program in 2000. The annual fashion show is one of the biggest fundraisers for Lift for Life Academy, the city’s first independent charter school.

WEDDINGS ‌CLAIRE MICHELLE MANTOVANI & ALEXANDER MICHAEL AUBEL

Love: The Adventure of a Lifetime

W

HAT HAPPENS WHEN TWO WANDERers collide? They may go their separate ways—or start a new adventure together, like Claire Michelle Mantovani and Alexander Michael Aubel chose to do. The two share a passion for travel, so it seems only fitting that their love story should take them from St. Louis, south to Tennessee and even as far as Florida. Both Claire and Alex attended Rhodes College in Memphis, but as he was a year older, they didn’t share a class. Still, there seemed to be something pulling these two together—or better yet, a certain someone. Meredith Bond, best friend of the bride (and future maid of honor), hosted her 21st birthday party, which both attended. “After the party, I asked if anyone wanted to go to the college bar. Surprisingly, Claire was the only one to say yes,” recalls Alex. “We went to the bar, and talked—just the two of us—for hours.” During their late-night conversation, the two realized they had another thing in common—this time, a place. “We found out that both of our parents had homes in Marco Island, Florida,”

26

SUMMER 2015 • ELEGANT LIVING    {LadueNews.com}

BY AMANDA DAHL says Claire. “What are the chances?!” Their connection seemed instantaneous, so they spent many more nights conversing over drinks, and building a friendship that budded into romance. When the pair had to separate over the summer to go to their respective cities—Claire to St. Louis and Alex to Fort Lauderdale— the distance made their attraction undeniable. “Being away from Claire was very difficult. I think it was then that I realized I wanted to spend as much time with her as possible because she not only brings out the best in me, but I have the most fun when I’m around her,” Alex admits. So, the lovestruck young man started making plans to propose. Banking on their love of travel and the beach, he found an opportunity when they planned a trip to the Grand Cayman with Alex’s brother and his now-fiancé, their mutual friend, Meredith. “As soon as we got to the beach on our first day there, I couldn’t wait any longer. I got the ring from my suitcase, asked Claire to go on a walk with me...and when we came back, we called family and popped Champagne to celebrate our engagement.” Continued on page 28

WEDDINGS Continued from page 26 On June 7 of 2014, Claire walked down the aisle at her family’s parish, the Church of the Annunziata, to where Alex awaited her. The bride carried a bouquet wrapped in lace with buttons, taken from her mother’s wedding dress. The reception was held at the luxe Four Seasons Hotel, St. Louis. The bride made sure to infuse the celebration with Floridian charm, from a specialty margarita and cocktail napkins featuring Jimmy Buffet lyrics, to a Buffet-inspired groom’s cake. Other destinations made their way into the theme of the evening. From a trolley for the wedding party à la Meet Me in St. Louis and an appearance by Louie, the Blues mascot, to a visit from a famous Memphis figure, all of the important places in the couple’s lives were recognized. “My dad surprised us with [a musical appearance from] ‘Elvis!’ Alex and I had so much fun dancing with him and with so many of our college friends,” says Claire. “It was definitely a huge surprise, and something we’ll never forget!” The two marked another place on the map with a honeymoon in Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens, Greece, where they saw wonderful sites, sampled vintages at wineries, and laid around on the pristine beaches. The two reside in Kirkwood, but it seems their adventure is just beginning.

ESSE JAMES FEID AND ALISON MERRILL CRAWFORD rode out of their wedding on a Vespa scooter with an attached sidecar for one memorable exit. Even now, the two can be seen riding around in it while visiting family in St. Louis. Much like the scooter, these two have shared an unforgettable ride together, leading all the way up the aisle and beyond. The two first met in Italy. While in their junior year of college, both Jesse and Alison enrolled in an study-abroad program in Florence. “We stood in line at a sandwich place, and for whatever reason, started talking about the Rick Steves travel books that every student seemed to have,” Jesse recalls. “We didn’t see each other again until nearly a year later, back at Indiana University.” Soon enough, Jesse had her laughing at all of his jokes, and their chemistry was undeniable. “Having a sense of humor about life is very important to me,” says Alison. “We have the best time together, with so many laughs along the way.” When Alison realized all of her future plans involved being alongside Jesse, it became clear that he would have to be her one and only. It seemed they were of the same mind as Jesse began the challenging task of planning a proposal, while living in England, to his girlfriend who lived an ocean apart. He kept the element of surprise by planning a meet-up in Florida a couple weeks after his intended proposal date, where they would leave together for a

BY AMANDA DAHL two-week vacation to his residence in London. “The hardest part was pretending I was still in London that day when, really, I was on a flight back to Chicago to surprise her,” says Jesse. “I actually said good night to her London-time with ring in pocket as my parents picked me up from the airport.” Just as Alison headed down her apartment steps for dinner with a friend, Jesse walked in through the lobby doors. “To say I was shocked is an understatement!” says Alison. “I was so happy, I couldn’t even stand it. The next day, I had plans to go to St. Louis to visit my family. Jesse had booked a ticket on the same flight, and planned for his family to drive down, so that our families could [finally] meet for the first time!” The duo chose to be wed in autumn, and created an event with a focus on family. “We decided not to have a head table, so we could instead sit with our immediate families, surrounded by the wedding party and our guests,” describes Alison. The bride-to-be sought a natural element for the big day, and definitely got it. “Our florist described her vision as walking through an English garden, and gathering flowers along the way,” says Alison. “I loved that!” The guests and newly joined husband and wife then took to the dance floor to dance the night away. “When they played Jessie’s Girl [by Rick Springfield], everyone was out there, surrounding us, and singing along,” recalls Alison. The couple honeymooned in Bali, and now resides in Chicago.

ROM THE MOMENT HE MET HER, FREDERICK Alan Wininger was swept away by the beauty of Brandie Suzanne Lamb. That moment struck as they cared for a patient at the University of Georgia’s Veterinary College—Fred as an intern and Brandie as an ICU nurse. Fred remembers thinking, “She looked so beautiful, and I wanted to find out more about her.” Distance and time cast complications, but their love affair held its ground. Brandie and Fred spent four years apart, focusing on their careers, before reuniting again. “I flew up to St. Louis from Florida to visit him, and even after several years, it was like nothing had changed between us,” Brandie recalls. “I knew then that he was the one.” Fred shared a similar mindset, and so the proposal-planning began. “I knew [she was the woman for me] by her incredible display of confidence and independence. I was struck when we shared stories of our past, and I realized that Brandie was the type of person I had always strived to be,” says Fred. However, after deciding to propose on their next team cycling trip, he encountered a complication. “After many attempts to have the

Atop a mountainside in Breckenridge, Colorado, Fred surprised Brandie with a gift. Continued on page 33

She became too distracted by the gift to notice Fred pulling the ring from his pocket. “On the camera was a picture of the ring!” Planning a wedding seemed a breeze, and these two found the most fitting way to represent their victory in finding each other. After choosing a venue that could accommodate both a Kosher menu and enough room for a mostly out-of-town guest list, the couple ultimately decided to remove some traditional aspects of the wedding celebration to include more meaningful elements, like incorporating their love for cycling and their dogs, throughout their wedding day. Brandie carried with her a couple of key items down the aisle: Her grandmother’s handkerchief wrapped around Brandie’s bouquet; and as part of a Southern tradition, she held a penny in her shoe from her birth year for good luck. Fred wore charming cufflinks in the shape of bicycles. The couple made a grand entrance into the reception, surprising family and friends, as they rode in on a red tandem bicycle—not an easy feat for a girl in a big, white dress. Other memorable moments included the touching speeches from those dearest to the bride and groom. “I cherish my dad’s toast,” says Fred. “It showed us that we are part of a bigger family now that cares about and loves us dearly.” The couple currently resides in Creve Coeur, where Fred is a veterinary neurosurgeon, and Brandie is tackling a new challenge by becoming a culinary student with plans to open a catering service in the near future. They plan to honeymoon next year in Thailand. Brandie and Fred still carry an important memento from their wedding day: the bicycle built for two, which served as a guest book and carries the signatures of their friends and family.

WEDDINGS ‌K ATHERINE MARGARET REESE & TRACE PATRICK WILSON

Weathering the Storm Together

T

HEY MET IN ONE OF THE MOST ORDINARY WAYS possible. Yet, when Katherine (Kate) Margaret Reese encountered Trace Patrick Wilson at a bar surrounded by friends, something about him struck her. “I knew early on what an amazing person Trace was,” Kate explains. “Every time I met one of his friends, the first thing they’d tell me about Trace is that he is a genuinely good person—willing to do anything for anyone, and that really shows.” Captivated by one another, the two soon fell in love. Trace coordinated his proposal with the initial meeting of both sets of parents. With dinner plans to follow, Trace suggested Kate and their families take a walk around Piedmont Park. As they neared the lake, he pulled Kate off to the side and proposed his intentions. Completely caught by surprise, Kate gave a resounding yes, and turned to find his parents snapping pictures and pulling out a Champagne bottle to toast the happy couple. They chose a family church, the Church of the Annunziata, and the bright interior of the Saint Louis Club for the backdrop of their big day. Kate carried a little bit of both her parents for her walk down the aisle: lace from her mother’s wedding dress as a wrap for her bouquet; and a lovely diamond bow necklace, courtesy of her father, who handed her the gift on the limousine

BY AMANDA DAHL ride to the ceremony. “I think we were spoiled because everything [about that day] seemed to go so smoothly,” recalls Trace. Perhaps that was because the real challenge lay ahead. Trace and Kate ventured to Cabo San Lucas for a festive honeymoon. What they got, instead, was a hurricane. “On our second day there, Hurricane Odile hit,” says Kate. The storm swept away parts of the resort, leaving no electricity or drinking water, and devastated the airport. The couple had no choice but to evacuate the premises by bus. Heading to Tijuana with plans to cross the border back into the United States, what should have taken 20 hours of driving time resulted in a four-day ride. “We slept in the Mexican desert on a rancher’s porch one night...it was a mess.” Finally crossing into San Diego, the two rested for 48 hours from the tremendous journey that was their honeymoon. Kate and Trace currently are planning a second honeymoon with high hopes. “The one thing I will say is this: Trace and I can have fun together anywhere,” Kate declares. “Having him there through it with me was a blessing—and now we have a great story of how our marriage was kicked off!” That kind of optimism reflects the happy road these two have laid before them. Determined to find a silver lining, Trace and Kate truly can weather any storm as long as they are together. The couple currently resides in Atlanta.

WEDDINGS ‌ELIZABETH ANNE O’KEEFE & DANIEL DUNHAM MOISIO

Swept Off Their Feet

O

VER THE SPAN OF NUMEROUS YEARS, Elizabeth (Liz) Anne O’Keefe and Daniel Dunham Moisio missed many opportunities to connect, creating the kind of story that Hollywood swoons over. Knowing each other as teenagers made it seem somewhat unlikely that they could know—and come to love—each other as adults. Yet Liz and Daniel continued to run into each other until their attraction could no longer be ignored. They initially crossed paths in high school, when Liz’s brother introduced her to his good friend, Daniel. Too young to know what the future could possibly hold, the two accepted the meeting to be nothing of significant note. The two found each other again on New Year’s Eve in 2010. “The first memory I have of Liz was a morning when she gave me and her brother a ride home after a night on the town,” says Daniel. “I could not believe there was anyone in the world so radiant and beautiful… And when she smiled at me, my heart

was in her hands.” Once the magnetism was evident, the two fell madly in love. Yet life interrupted, and Liz and Daniel got pulled in separate directions. And it took almost three years for them to realize they belonged together. Just hours before Daniel turned 30, he received an affectionate text message from none other than Liz. Upon returning home from his birthday celebration in Las Vegas, he reconnected with her; and at long last, they became a couple. So, this time, when Daniel headed to Austin, Texas for school, the goodbye was a challenge. “I bought the ring at the spur of the moment one night after talking to Liz,” says Daniel. Soon after, he arrived in St. Louis on a planned trip almost two months into their fully fledged relationship. “Once I arrived, I knew that proposing right away was the only way to go.” Liz recalls, “He barely waited ten minutes after getting out Continued on page 38

Continued from page 36 of the car. Time stood still, and words couldn’t even come out of my mouth. Eventually, [I managed to get out] a high-pitched yes!” The two selected a wedding date soon after Daniel’s school year ended, but the idea of separating for even a few months seemed ridiculous; so they pushed the date up to his winter break, giving only 10 weeks for them to plan everything. The biggest difficulty was determining if their guests—especially family—would be able to make it with such short notice. Luckily, Liz rose to the challenge and created a winter wonderland soiree people would not soon forget. The wedding day came, and so did many of the guests invited. Liz dazzled in ‘something borrowed’ (her mother’s pearl necklace and pendant), ‘something old’ (her great-grandmothe r ’s e n ga ge m e n t ring, redesigned by her grandmother with sapphires and diamonds), and ‘something blue’ (the diamond b ra c e l e t g i f te d by her fiancé for Christmas). The wh i rlw i n d p l a n ning period done and over, and the wedding celebration brilliantly executed, Liz and Daniel could DANIEL MOISIO finally get swept away in the sheer romance of it all. “Liz and I were alone for a moment, just after walking down the aisle,” says Daniel. “We stopped on the stairs at the back of the church, and looked at each other as husband and wife. It was the most exhilarating moment of my life.” The two took a ‘mini-moon’ to Belize, spending their days in the sunshine and unwinding with books, while enjoying each other’s company. They plan to take their full honeymoon this fall in Italy and Greece. Soon to be joined in Austin by his wife, Daniel has one piece of advice for any guy as madly in love as he is: “Propose. Having a wife is like having someone who can look out into the future to catch a vision of how your lives will be shaped together. It is an incomparably better way to live—when you have someone who you know will be there with you forever.”

adulterous relationship.” This year’s 80-member cast and crew is set to outdo itself once again with a production of massive scale. “For every one person you see onstage, there are four people behind them,” Dildine notes. Among the many challenges of this 42-scene play is depicting two vastly different geographic areas in which the tale takes place: Egypt and Rome. The festival team is achieving this feat with a simple set of five gold pillars on a ramped black backdrop that lets the costumed characters tell the story. “It’s as if the actors are floating off the ground,” Dildine muses.

HAKESPEARE FESTIVAL ST. LOUIS WILL CELEbrate its 15th anniversary in epic fashion: Elaborate costumes and emotional drama will take centerstage in Forest Park’s Shakespeare Glen when the troupe presents the tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra. “For our 15th year, we wanted something that felt epic and timeless,” says Rick Dildine, artistic and executive director. “When we were looking through (The Bard’s) titles, Antony and Cleopatra jumped out immediately. People know them as individuals, but are unaware of the power this couple held as two heads of state having this open,

BY BRITTANY NAY

Come opening night, an array of stunning costumes and dazzling jewels will shine under the moonlight: blue, white and gold garments representing Egypt; and red and purple garb standing for Rome. Shakespeare Festival invited Ladue News for an exclusive sneak peek as the show’s star, Shirine Babb, was fitted for her regal ensembles. Colorful costumes are crucially important in this venue, helping the crowd identify which side each character is on, Dildine notes. “The closest audience member is about 30 feet away, and the farthest can be 50 yards.” Each of the 17 cast members has at least two costumes, with three unique looks for the show’s female lead, Cleopatra. “After all, she is the richest woman in the world,” notes costume designer Dottie Englis, who designed costumes for four past festivals, including its first play, Romeo & Juliet, in 2001. Cleopatra’s elaborate stylings will include a sleek cream dress and headband; a fierce warrior outfit of gold armor; and the stunning showstopper: an electric blue silk gown, complete with a golden corset, cuffs and crown, and capped off with a sweeping electric blue and white-lined cape. The design crew split into two teams to take on the Roman and Egyptian fashions, with the first members beginning fulltime work hours in early April. The months-long, multistage design process includes vivid sketches of the garments, patterning, stitching and several fittings with the actors, Englis says. The most difficult part has proved to be the construction of the battle armor for Antony and his soldiers, crew members note.

“WE ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE SHIRINE AS OUR CLEOPATRA. SHE IS ONE OF THE LEADING CLASSICAL ACTRESSES IN THE NATION.” RICK DILDINE, artistic and executive director The costumes are delicate and breathable for the summer heat, but also must be durable enough for the lengthy performance schedule, Englis adds. Another challenge for this year’s team is backstage logistics. For the first time, the set will not have a rear wall—only netting. “Backstage really is its own production,” Dildine notes. From quick costume changes to microphone issues and battling the elements—they hope to avoid, but plan ahead for every possible problem that may arise. With an experienced crew and a high-caliber cast, Dildine is certain that the only drama will be onstage. “We are so lucky to have Shirine as our Cleopatra. She is one of the leading classical actresses in the nation,” Dildine says. And Jay Stratton, who plays Antony, is a powerful actor, he adds. “They are a good match.” To experience all the drama firsthand, head to Forest Park’s Shakespeare Glen for nightly 8 p.m. performances (except Tuesdays) from May 22 to June 14, and preview plays on May 20 and 21.

heritage, the street was renamed Pershing Place in 1915 during World War I in honor of General John J. Pershing. The neighborhood thrived for many years; although at the end of World War II, some homeowners began migrating to the suburbs, thanks, in part, to the sprawling interstate highway system. However, many Pershing Place homeowners chose to stay and preserve the character of their remarkable neighborhood. In the 1950s, residents of the 4500 and 4900 blocks of Pershing Place incorporated to form a new private street—the first time the city allowed a public thoroughfare to become private.

HE THREE-STORY HOME OCCUPYING THE corner lot at 4505 Pershing Place was built in 1907, just three years after the Louisiana Purchase Exposition opened in nearby Forest Park. It is one of five properties on the block designed by the architect A.F. Drischler. True to the time period, the architecture of the home incorporates elements of the Tudor Revival style, which the current homeowners have respected by maintaining a dark brown and cream exterior paint scheme. Inside, however, the young couple has created an eclectic décor that is perhaps best described as ‘modern luxe.’ The drama starts in the generously scaled entry hall, which features the home’s signature 10-step crown moldings, 10-foot ceilings, heavy pocket doors, and new ebony-stained bamboo flooring that has been installed throughout the house. The visual drama carries over into the dining room and living room, as well as into the unique sunken media room that is accessed by a small flight of stairs off the entry hall. Originally conceived as an art studio because of the many windows providing natural light; today, the room is decorated in a modern Moroccan style, with globally inspired furnishings and

The dining room is furnished with an eclectic mix of new pieces, as well as family heirlooms and antiques, such as two 16th-century French bergeres, a crystal and cobalt chandelier, and framed silk fabric panels that decorate the west wall. Like the dining room, the living room is ideal for nighttime entertaining with its rich aubergine walls and bright metallic accents. Seating includes a modern shelter-style sofa with silver nail head trim, which is faced by a pair of slipper chairs. Floating in the center of the room is a large, glass-topped coffee table. Also noteworthy is the ultra-slim powder room off the entry hall, which features a tone-on-tone black geometric wallpaper, as well as the large second-floor landing with a broad expanse of beautiful art glass windows.

T‌

HE THREE-STORY HOME AT 4554 PERSHING Place was designed by the architectural firm of Weber and Groves for Thomas P. McCormick, a mechanical engineer and son of the director of Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company. Constructed in 1899, the home is designed in the Beaux Arts/ Renaissance style. Typical of the era in which it was built, the front façade of the residence features attractive terra cotta decorations, including acanthus leaves, fleur de lis and swags. Arches and decorative pilasters frame the front door and windows. Other noteworthy exterior architectural features are the unique two-story curved bay on the east elevation, egg and dart cornice, corner quoins, and an ornate copper dormer on the roof line. The interior is just as impressive, with high ceilings, original brass hardware, and most notably, the elaborate handcrafted woodwork that is a central feature throughout. The living room is distinguished by the generous use of very rare Old World maple, which has been decorated with beading, egg and dart, and Hepplewhite motifs. The living room gives way—via a large, gracefully arched doorway—to an elliptically shaped paneled library, which features a gently curved bay window and leaded-glass front bookcase. Meanwhile, in the adjacent dining room, several layers of paint have been removed to reveal rich mahogany woodwork. A built-in, floor-to-ceiling mahogany breakfront with fanlight top and curved glass doors is yet another decorative architectural treasure. On the stair landing off the large entry hall, large triple-panel art glass windows sport a coat of arms, which is found on windows throughout the home. In the back of the house, the current owners have installed a new cook’s kitchen with dark wood cabinets and a glass-walled breakfast room, which is clad in copper on the exterior. It overlooks a new in-ground pool, and the original carriage house that was built in 1901 with art glass windows that match those in the house.

PON ENTERING THE GRACIOUS FOYER OF THE whitewashed brick home at 4934 Pershing Place, one is enveloped by a profound sense of elegance and calm. Subdued lighting, fine furnishings and artwork with global provenance imbue this residence with a sophisticated, modern ambience. The fact that the home was built in 1896 is not readily apparent, save perhaps for the remarkable woodwork, high ceilings, and generously sized rooms typical of the era and neighborhood. Designed by the architectural firm of Barnett, Haynes and Barnett for a 21-year-old Yale University graduate, the three-story house features elements of the Romanesque and Classical Revival style, evident in the understated façade. The house, which was constructed in 1915, reached the centennial milestone this year, yet it feels as fresh as springtime, thanks to the loving upkeep and fine taste of its owners. Although it is on the large side—spread out over three floors and some 4,500 square feet—the residence is perfect for two empty-nesters, who enjoy city living and hosting family gatherings that include five children and as many as nine grandchildren. When the residence was built, the façade was gray brick with limestone trim, the entrance was on the west side, and an open porch occupied a space on the east side. In 1921, an addition on the west side of the home resulted in a street-facing entrance with a charming black and white tiled entry hall and additional bathroom on the second floor. On the east façade, the existing porch was recast as a morning room with a fireplace, barrel-vaulted ceiling, and a finely wrought leaded-glass, floor-toceiling Palladian window. The graciously sized living room features exquisite millwork, French doors, nine-over-nine sash windows, and twin fireplaces with distinctive carved mantels at either end. In addition to a baby concert grand piano floating in the center, the expansive room readily accommodates two separate conversation areas, one ve ry t ra d i t i o n a l and the other quite contemporary in style. The adjacent traditional coralcolored dining room houses a fireplace, large builtin china cabinet in the Palladian style, and generous n i n e - ove r- n i n e sash windows. The center piece of the dining room is a custom-made rectangular Maryland Hunt table that can be extended with two demi-lune tables at either end to accommodate as many as 24 diners. The gorgeous staircase in the center of the home is particularly noteworthy, not only for the exceptionally fine woodworking, but also for the fact that it soars upwards to the third floor, offering an unobstructed view from top to bottom. This truly elegant home, which has had as many as 10 different owners and three renters occupying it over the years, has been lovingly cared for by the current owners, who have respected its architecture, while creating a cozy, warm and inviting residence filled with exquisite furnishings and artwork. They’ve also restored and added to the home’s gardens, which were originally designed by the renowned Edith Mason.

ST. HELENA:

Where the Sky’s the Limit BY TRISH MUYCO-TOBIN

Wine aficionados know that St. Helena is the heart of the Napa Valley. It was here in the mid-1800s that winemaking throughout the area got its start, when a 27-year-old Prussian immigrant named Charles Krug established his winery just north of town. Today, more than 150 years later, St. Helena continues to be the face of one of the world’s foremost wine-growing regions.

W

E’VE BEEN TO ST. HELENA BEFORE, but we’ve never experienced it quite like we had this time around, with a home base at the Wydown Hotel on Main Street. And do we mean home. Yes, you read it right: The hotel is named after Clayton’s

own Wydown Boulevard, a tribute to owner and operator Mark Hoffmeister’s favorite St. Louis neighborhood. Hoffmeister is a St. Louis University High School grad who has a background in investment banking. He had always been interested in design and fascinated by the idea of hotels, dating back to childhood family vacations. When you enter the Wydown,

HOFFMEISTER PHOTO BY FRANKENY IMAGES‌

Mark Hoffmeister in the Wydown Hotel lobby

you’ll immediately sense Hoffmeister’s welcoming touch and his passion for detail. For instance, the lobby is more like a living room, adorned with extraordinary, large-scale photographs (that were taken by his brother-in-law), as well as modern-luxe furnishings that entice guests to sit and stay awhile. The rooms are just as inviting, with contemporary touches in that laid-back, California kind of way. The Wydown’s location is ideal: It’s within walking distance of everything on Main Street. There’s the world-famous Model Bakery across the street, a wonderful place for an early-morning coffee-and-croissant run; there’s the Cameo Cinema a few steps down, an intimate, small-town movie theater that’s as charming as it sounds; and boutiques and gourmet food stores

too many to mention. Of course, no trip to St. Helena would be complete without sampling the wine. It is, after all, California Wine Country’s ‘Main Street.’ But even if you planned to stay for several days, it would be overwhelming to try to experience each and every winery. Instead, opt for no more than a handful of stops, and sit back and enjoy each visit. Our first destination was a jaw-dropping showstopper: the Castello di Amorosa winery. Meticulously designed as a 13th-century Tuscan castle, this ‘Castle of Love’ is a sight to behold. Beginning in 1994, it took 14 years for its owner, fourthgeneration winemaker Dario Sattui, to build. The attention to detail is mind-blowingly impressive: The 121,000-square-foot behemoth has 107 rooms, eight levels (four above ground, four below), 900 linear feet of caves, and more than 8,000 tons of hand-lain stone. Also in place are a great hall, a dungeon and torture chamber, several courtyards, and a drawbridge (of course!). What about the wine, you ask? Try the Il Barone, a 100-percent cabernet sauvignon that scored 94 points from Robert Parker. La Castellana, a Super-Tuscan blend, also got our attention. Sattui, who is in his 70s, also owns the nearby V. Sattui Winery, which he established in the 1970s. V. Sattui and Castello share a winemaking team, which boasts a pedigree dating back to Sattui’s great-grandfather, Vittorio, who started making wine in San Francisco in the 1880s. V. Sattui Winery is as relaxed as the Castello is imposing.

In fact, V. Sattui has earned Winery of the Year honors from Winemaker Challenge for three straight years. If you’re looking to indulge in culinary fashion, look no farther than Goose & Gander. With just one step inside this establishment, you can sense that it’s a local favorite for an upscale, laidback dinner and (a few) drinks. Did we mention the drinks? They are as satisfying and satiating as they can get. These truly are handcrafted delights, with the freshest of flavors, emphasis on fresh—from the rhubarb in the signature Scarlet Gander, which also includes citron, vodka, lemon, ginger, shiso and galangal; to the huckleberries in the Cucumber Collins, along with vodka, yuzu, lemon, fresh and pickled cucumbers and seltzer—you can taste the hand-picked flavorful goodness. Bryan Carr of Avenue “Tomato salads are always popular in the summer. They’re very good, and we do a wide variety of them. We will use peppers, and any kind of veggies, including fresh artichokes, when we can get them. We don’t try to invent—just try to make what’s good. I let the veggies tell me what to do.”

Bricktop’s Ahi Tuna Salad

Troy Imler of Bricktop’s “We have a few that are very popular in the summer. One is our tuna salad. It’s a beautiful summer salad that’s seasoned with a combination of baby greens and tomatoes, mangoes and avocado, all tossed in a white balsamic vinaigrette.”

AHI TUNA SALAD INGREDIENTS FOR THE VINAIGRETTE DRESSING: 1 c white balsamic vinegar 2 T lemon juice 2 T Guldens Mustard 2 T sugar

- Place first six ingredients into a standard home blender. - Blend ingredients on low for one minute. - Increase the speed to medium, and slowly pour the olive oil into the blender while running. This will emulsify the dressing, and should take about two minutes to pour all the oil into the blender—the slower, the better. - Transfer emulsified dressing into a bowl, and whisk remaining ingredients into dressing by hand. - Cover and refrigerate until cold. FOR THE TUNA: 4 oz fresh Ahi tuna, seasoned with salt and pepper.

2 c extra virgin olive oil

Sear all four sides in a sauté pan with medium-high heat, for 45 to 60 seconds on each side (or to desired temperature). Slice a quarter of an inch thick after cooking.

1 t kosher salt

FOR THE SALAD:

1 t ground black pepper

2 c mixed field greens

1 t dried tarragon

1/4 c each carrots, jicama, diced cucumber, grape tomatoes, avocado, mango

2 T garlic, chopped

1 t dried oregano 1 t dried basil

PREPARATION:

Toss all ingredients with 2 oz of dressing, and serve on a chilled plate. Arrange the tuna around the plate, and garnish with sesame seeds.

DINING FOOD AND WINE PAIRINGS

Sip and Savor

BY LISA WATSON

‌The heat and activity of summer put us in the mood for lighter fare, paired with cool wines that dance on the palate. We asked some local chefs and restaurateurs to recommend their favorite pairings for this summer: Kemoll’s Executive chef Don Tadlock recommends grilled swordfish with pattypan squash, served alongside broccolini, all in a butter sauce, accented by cherry tomatoes. He pairs this exquisite plate with one of the restaurant’s best-selling wines: a 2013 Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay. The crispness of the wine sets off the butteriness of the sauce, he note, making this a winning combination. Panorama At Panorama, the farmers truly plan the menu, with the freshest fruits and vegetables placed at the forefront, says executive chef Ivy Magruder. “In summer, you’re eating lighter; there are a lot more whites and a lot more sparkling wines. Gone are the days of people thinking bubbles are a celebratory wine only.” This summer, he’s excited about Panorama’s panseared halibut with toasted orzo, basil, grapefruit segments and smoked paprika butter. What to drink with this feast? He suggests pairing by smell first, since the tastebuds work closely with the nose—offering a Gruet Brut Rose. Giovanni’s Kitchen Giovanni’s Chitarrina Allo Scoglio is a house-made pasta filled to the brim with shrimp, diver scallops, clams and fresh seafood, notes director of operations Warren Rapp. The seafood is tossed with spaghettini and San Marzano tomato sauce, basil and extra-virgin olive oil. For a wine pairing, he recommends De Luca ‘Armannia’ Pecorino. “It’s crisp and light like a sauvignon blanc, with the perfect amount of minerality and acidity to pair with the shellfish and fish in the dish. It’s light and fresh, so it’s not going to weigh you down.”
