Rudy (a 1958 Jeep Truck) and Brittany Sarhage (the Jeep’s owner) are brightening the area one bouquet at a time in the mobile venture named (you guessed it) Rudy’s Flower Truck, as Ren Bishop relates to LN readers in this floral feature.

STYLE SPEAK A pair of pumps inspired by the ice cream cone, that summer delight beloved by kids of all ages, numbers among the topics LN regular Julia Cain discusses with Claire Flowers, that St. Louisbased heroine of heels (and soon, handbags, too).

On the cover 8 Genovese Jewelers has a history of creating the perfect engagement ring for each couple who comes in the shop. That’s because, to Genovese, this moment is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Read how the story unfolds on page 8. Photo by Sarah Conroy.

EDITOR WEEK AFTER WEEK, WHEN I SIT DOWN TO WRITE THIS LETTER, I flip through what will soon be this week’s edition, allowing myself to recap what pieces truly spoke to me. Although I believe each edition of Ladue News is as special as the last, this week I couldn’t imagine calling out just one story. Each is special in its own way, and it fills my heart with joy to know that we have the privilege to share stories about the inspiring people in our community every week. In this week’s edition, LN’s newest contributing writer, Ren Bishop, shares the beautiful story of Rudy’s Flower Truck. Started by Brittany Sarhage, Rudy’s Flower Truck is a mobile flower truck with hopes of simply brightening someone’s day with fresh blooms. We hope you enjoy learning more about Rudy’s on p. 22 and even track down some blooms to brighten your day. Also in this week’s Abode section, make sure to check out the profile of Buddy Shaw (p. 21). Shaw is a sixthgeneration woodworker creating beautiful, one-of-a kind pieces for your home. And on p. 73, LN contributing writer Julia Cain checks in with Claire Flowers, who will be expanding from the heels we all know and love to a wider apparel approach! We round out the issue with LN digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter’s feature on Brazen (p. 82), a nonprofit with a mission to help empower female entrepreneurs and CEOs to help grow their businesses. These stories are just four examples of the creativity, vibrancy and entrepreneurial spirit in St. Louis, and I’m so proud to share them with you. Best,

Beautiful The

Beginning

of a

G

RELatiONShip

enovese Jewelers has a generational love for creating the perfect jewelry piece for the many families that walk through its doors. “The engagement sale is most important for us,” president Joe Genovese says. “That is the beginning of our relationship. We hope to have the couple as customers for their whole lives.” Genovese has been in the business since age 13, and now he is selling engagement rings to the grandchildren of his original customers. His deep affection for connecting with each client begins the moment he first meets with them. “The best advice I can give is to stay within a reasonable budget,” Genovese asserts. “Every day, I sit across from couples. One person has grand visions of the perfect ring, while the other sits next to them, sweating. I tell them, ‘Don’t worry. I’m going to get a ring she or he loves in a budget that is comfortable for you – whatever that is.’ And we do it every time.” All a client needs to describe is the shape of the center stone. From there, the expert designers determine the appropriate bandwidth and accent jewels. The team utilizes CAD (computer-aided design) technology to draw up a computerized concept, which is then

forwarded to the clients for approval. That final design shoots to a 3D printer, which creates an exact model of the ring for couples to try on before it is even made. “A lot of times, couples want to follow along [the design process] every step of the way,” Genovese comments. “It’s their special custom ring. And yet, it won’t cost them any more money for me to design a custom piece than it does to pick one out of the case. This is all created on-site. Everything is done here; nothing is jobbed out.” The St. Louis-based company centralizes the design and production processes to better benefit clients, and the community at-large through job opportunities. Genovese has a lot of love for the city he calls home. “Each and every year, I invest significant money in the latest technology for manufacturing jewelry,” Genovese adds. “Our goal is to make the highest quality piece out there at the best price. Being so vertically integrated, we can custom-make that ring right here in the United States – in St. Louis.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, genovesejewelers.com

T

he Assistance League of St. Louis recently welcomed writers and radio hosts Amy Dickinson and Kevin Killeen as guests at its 13th annual Authors Brunch. Guests gathered in the atrium at Edward Jones in Des Peres and browsed drawings for “opportunity baskets,” as well as purchased Dickinson’s and Killeen’s books and had the writers sign them. Guests then enjoyed brunch and a program with presentations by the pair. The Assistance League of St. Louis, a volunteer organization, responds to a variety of unmet needs of tens of thousands of children and adults in the metro area.

This is a very fulfilling volunteer position. I see the good work that we’ve done throughout the community. I’m proud to be associated with it, and the hundreds of wonderful ladies makes it a very exciting opportunity for all of us. DINEEN EBERT, 25-YEAR MEMBER

lder adults are at the heart of everything Mason Pointe does each day. That singular focus has long been a hallmark of Mason Pointe’s parent company, Lutheran Senior Services [LSS]. As a trusted not-forprofit in the senior living industry, LSS serves older adults through senior living communities, short-stay rehabilitation, in-home care, affordable housing, community-based services and outreach programs. “As part of LSS, Mason Pointe is focused on service excellence,” says Drew Redman, executive director at Mason Pointe, the newest LSS senior living community. “We’re on a journey of continuous improvement, always learning best practices that we can share across the organization. That’s how LSS continues to grow in its service to seniors.” For Redman, it is all about learning. His education in senior living began after his formal education ended. “I had graduated from college knowing I wanted to be in healthcare,” he says. “My grandparents lived in a nursing home, so I was interested in senior care. I was drawn to LSS because of its reputation. I reached out to the executive director at Breeze Park, another LSS senior living community, and that’s where it all started.” Redman’s entrance into the senior living industry began with an internship at Breeze Park. In his time there, he was continually impressed with LSS’s dedication to residents and commitment to staff. In time, he would benefit from the latter, receiving training through the organization and finding new opportunities for growth. A short time later, he was promoted to administrator – first at LSS’s Jefferson City communities and then at Meridian Village in the St. Louis metro area. He was later named director of clinical quality at the Home Office before assuming his current role at Mason Pointe. In all LSS communities, Redman finds a common theme. “This is an organization that truly lives by Christian core values,” he says. “We are faith-inspired and people-first. We always strive for service excellence, and we’re responsible with the resources that have been entrusted to us. Most importantly, we serve with generous hearts. The fact that we are notfor-profit helps us check all those boxes, and it keeps our business plan and core values aligned. That’s what has kept us growing for 160 years.” A 160-year tradition is nothing trivial. LSS understands senior living because it has helped to build the industry. Now one of the largest not-for-profit senior living providers in the country, LSS makes it a point to focus on the individual. Every resident of a senior living community, every client of home-and-community-based services and every guest of shortstay rehabilitation is part of the LSS story. All benefit from the organizational knowledge that has been built up over time. To Redman, though, the organization’s past matters less than its future. “I am confident in the future of Mason Pointe,” he says. “Since we’re not-for-profit, we constantly reinvest earnings back into our buildings, our programs

have one of the best staffing ratios in the industry, “ We which means residents get lots of personal attention.” - drew redmAn, executive director At mAson pointe

and, most importantly, our people. “We have one of the best staffing ratios in the industry, which means residents get lots of personal attention,” Redman adds. “Our certified nursing assistants, our housekeepers, the individuals who make and serve the meals...these are the people who are closest to our residents. These are the people who have the greatest opportunity to make them happy.” And that is what it is all about, he says. “Our residents had wonderful, rich experiences before they came here. It’s our job to make sure they have wonderful, rich experiences now. For so many of us at Mason Pointe, serving seniors is a calling – and a privilege.” Mason Pointe, 13190 S. Design Speak

Biggar & Shaw By Allison Pohle

PHOTOS COURTESY OF BIGGAR & SHAW

W

oodworking has been in Buddy Shaw’s family for six generations. When his great-great-great-greatgrandfather came to America from Scotland, he described himself as a “jointer,” a person who joined wood together. Jointing, carving and sculpting techniques passed down through the family – until Shaw threatened to break the streak. “I went to school for law enforcement and became a state park ranger,” he says. “I enjoyed my job. I was good at it. I worked at a lot of cool parks. But I was creatively depressed. It took quite a number of years to come to the point where I realized woodworking was what I wanted to do.” Now Shaw owns Biggar & Shaw, his own sculpture, art and design company, named for his ancestors, Thomas Biggar and Clarence Shaw. He crafts original air plant abstracts, furniture and sculptures, many ethereal and free-form in nature. But Shaw learned most of what he knows from his father, whom he calls more traditional in style, in the family woodshop. The younger Shaw started

by sweeping up sawdust for a dollar as a child, then, as a teenager, helped his father with kitchen cabinetry projects. When his father decided to retire in 2010 and sell his business, Shaw was forced to choose between continuing the family tradition or forging his own path. He left woodworking behind. However, in late 2014, after a few years of working as a park ranger in the Lake of the Ozarks and other area parks, he decided to turn the basement of his home into a woodshop. He found his creative outlet in sketching furniture designs, carefully selecting wood and sculpting one-of-a-kind works. “I go to the Saint Louis Art Museum, and I want to touch beautiful marble sculptures they did by hand, but you can’t,” he says. “The woods begs to be touched, and it can be. With this creative process, you have a sculpture that’s functional.” To make sure his sculptures will pass the functionality test, Shaw spends time with each of them in his own home. He’ll put up shelves and try out end tables. He also brings his furniture to art shows. “I’ll ask people to sit in my chairs, and they think I’m trying to get them to buy it, but really, I just want to know if it’s

comfortable for them,” he says. “I want my stuff to be classic. One hundred years from now, I hope someone’s still enjoying it.” Its functionality explains why Shaw’s work enjoys such high demand. His products are available at trade shows and in the furniture store Confluence on Hampton Avenue in St. Louis, but most of his clients come directly to him through word of mouth. He enjoys working on custom pieces and collaborating on designs with his customers, but says many buy based on the prototypes they’ve seen at trade shows or on his Instagram feed (instagram.com/biggarandshaw). He’s now crafting full time – and Shaw wouldn’t have it any other way. “I consider my stuff to be heirloom quality,” he says. “It’s very personal to me. It’s one of the reasons why I’m only doing this. I don’t want to get rich off of this. I want to create work that will last. I want it to be a gift.”

Blooming Her Business Is

Brittany Sarhage

By Ren Bishop | Photos by Sarah Conroy

An n in internet ad, d, of all thin things, planted the seeds for Brittany Sarhage’s mobile horticultural service, Rudy’s Flower Truck.

W

hile on maternity leave with her second daughter, Brittany Sarhage was looking for a career change, h ,d despite ite b being ing uns unsure what h t sh she wanted t d to d do.. B By chance, h , Sarh Sarhage saw an ad for an article on Entrepreneur magazine’s website: 10 mobile business ideas that weren’t food trucks. The 10 included a California woman who served as a full-service florist on wheels. Although Sarhage thought it an interesting idea, she scrolled on. Yet that idea stuck in her mind for weeks.

“I wanted to provide a service to the community that was simple but that added a lot of value,” Sarhage says. “At that time, I wasn’t really looking to start a business, but when I saw this idea, I knew it would be something that would be cool for St. Louis.” And thus was born Rudy’s Flower Truck. Sarhage never planned on Rudy’s, but she had dreamed for more than a decade about opening a place of her own. Although an experience-based service business, like a coffee shop or bakery, topped her list, such a business always seemed a bit out of reach. “It wasn’t until the idea of a mobile flower shop came to mind that I thought this could be possible,” she says. “I think the flexibility to travel to customers and the initial investment being something within my reach is what made Rudy’s start possible.” That initial investment demanded the right truck: Sarhage wanted one that was unique and recognizable on area streets. On eBay, she found a 1958 Jeep Truck, one of only 30,000 made 60 years ago, and bought it from a Wisconsin man who shared with her its every potential issue and quirk. The man was truthful; the truck, perfect for Sarhage’s needs. Its name later came to her while Sarhage was watching an international soccer game involving a player with the surname of Rudy. “As soon as I said the name, I knew it was a perfect fit for the business,” she recalls – and this spring, Rudy and Sarhage started rolling. Sarhage remains open and honest about not only her truck but also her skills, most of which she’s learned since conceiving the business last fall. She’s neither a trained florist nor a custom floral designer, for instance. But she is creative by nature and helpful in creating beautiful bouquets with an eye for color for customers. “Probably 70 percent of the time, I am the one putting together a bouquet for our customers,” she says. “If a customer can tell me what they’re looking for or what colors they like, I can do that. And my ability to do that has grown over the months.” Sarhage encourages her weekend customers to browse the truck’s fresh blooms at their own pace, discovering seasonal and vibrant flowers in its bed. Although most of the blooms in the Jeep’s 16 flower buckets are sourced wholesale, several come from Flower Girl & Co., a farm in

24

june 22, 2018 | LadueNews.com

Palmyra, Illinois, about a 1½-hour drive north of St. Louis. Owner Lisa Cox was the first farmer to partner with Rudy’s. “She was the first farmer who was really gung-ho to work with the truck,” Sarhage says of Cox. “It’s a great way to get some of her flowers out and into the public. I like featuring local blooms because it’s important to our customers. I also understand that not everything that is in demand will be local. The beauty of the truck is, we have a mix of blooms and greenery that support both the local and international economies.” Rudy’s stock of blooms changes based on the season and Sarhage’s preference. The roselike lisianthus is her favorite, snapdragons are a bestseller, and Illinois-grown ranunculus and anemones help create stunning, custom bouquets for customers. But any product from Rudy’s is meant to spread joy. “Flowers really seem to brighten up someone’s day,” Sarhage says. “Customers come to find a little piece of joy at the truck. Sometimes they share that joy with a friend or family member. There are numerous reasons people stop by, and I love hearing each and every one.” In just a few short months, Rudy’s has rolled through Ladue, Maplewood, St. Louis’ Grove business district and other locales. Sarhage participated in a pop-up flower stand inside Anthropologie in Richmond Heights’ Saint Louis Galleria and, since then, has been doing a number of similar pop-up stands in other businesses, in addition to selling flowers from the truck. On her website’s calendar and her Instagram account (instagram.com/rudysflowertruck), Sarhage updates her customers on where she’ll visit next. Sarhage hopes that when she’s taking photos of customers with Rudy or selling flowers, she’s also changing minds. “People tend to think of flowers as only for special occasions,” she says. “What I want to do is make purchasing flowers just as normal as buying your weekly groceries. I’d love to see people view having flowers in their home as a necessity rather than a luxury. I think we’re on our way there. Getting St. Louis residents more accustomed with flowers and the joy that comes from sharing and having them is my ultimate goal.” Rudy’s Flower Truck, 314-446-9659, rudysflowertruck.com

amed one of St. Louis’s most distinctive properties by Architectural Digest, this English Country-style manor was designed by the renowned architectural firm, McAlpine. Clad in weathered fieldstone and Missouri walnut, this environmentally-friendly abode saves energy through special features, like a whole-home generator and geothermal heating and cooling. When temperatures dip, you’ll stay toasty with the geothermal heat that warms the wide-plank ash floors found throughout, including in each of the five ensuite bedrooms. During the warmer months, you’ll want never want to leave the backyard, whose highlight is a custom Baker pool, surrounded by stone and accented by waterfalls. After you take a dip, head back indoors to the lower level, where you and a friend can entertain yourselves with a game of billiards or table tennis. Hungry from all of this exertion? Then, prep a smoothie or juice from one of the kitchen’s two side pantries. This home answers your every want and need.

In 1983, the pair launched Mueller Prost CPAs and Business Advisors. “We started small but always maintained our vision of being a trusted advisor to our clients and having a place of work we enjoyed,” Mueller says. “As

MCKNIGHT PLACE ASSISTED LIVING & MEMORY CARE

Unparalleled Assisted Living By Emma Dent

D

efined by the highest quality of service and unmatched amenities, McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care continually seeks to make life more comfortable, convenient and enjoyable for its residents. “We created a space dedicated to the comfort and accessibility of our residents and their guests,” declares Charlie Deutsch, co-owner of The Gatesworth communities. “With beautiful floor plans, exquisite attention to detail and every luxury, people can be proud to say they live at McKnight Place.” With a series of recent expansions, McKnight Place has given residents even more reason to take pride in their community. In December 2017, the staff moved 45 residents from the original Assisted Living building into their new apartments in the community’s three-story, 102,000-square-foot expansion. Featuring a mixture of large suites and one-bedroom units, the Assisted Living expansion adds 90 apartments to the community. Boasting panoramic Pella windows and lofty, nine- and 10-foot-high ceilings, the new apartments are brighter and more spacious. Other amenities, like custom wood cabinetry and granite countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, add an extra layer of luxury to each unit. “In every decision, the resident is always first,” affirms Tracy Cecil, McKnight Place’s executive director. The dedicated team at McKnight Place is committed to providing supportive services that improve Assisted Living

residents’ well-being. From on-site physical and occupational therapy to roundthe-clock nursing care, Assisted Living residents enjoy independence, while benefiting from attentive care. Building community is also paramount to the McKnight Place staff, who keep Assisted Living residents engaged through a robust calendar of special events and activities. With a brand-new theater, the Assisted Living expansion allows McKnight Place to further enhance its dynamic programming, which includes guest speakers, music concerts and film showings. The new art room and greenhouse also let creativity bloom, both indoors and outdoors. In addition to the renovated Assisted Living complex, McKnight Place recently debuted the second phase of its expansion: McKnight Place Memory Care. On June 3, McKnight Place held a grand opening event to celebrate its new Memory Care wing, as well as the completion of the larger expansion project. At this festive afternoon event, residents and other guests were able to tour the new buildings, and delight in live music and delicacies, prepared by executive chef Anthony Lyons. With the expansion project now complete, McKnight Place solidifies its status as the premier Assisted Living – and now Memory Care – community in the St. Louis area. As one resident attests, “It’s perfect, and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Head of the Class By Amanda Dahl

T

he word “craft” in Car Craft Auto Body has far deeper significance than one can ascertain at first glance. It is the credo of a company that prides itself on a knowledge unmatched by others. From the owner on down, each employee shares a passion for their work. “Our owner, Jimmy Mason, started working at Car Craft at age 15,” VP Garry Goddard Jr. says. “He bought the business in the early 1970s. We opened a location in Chesterfield Valley in 2007. In 2016, we opened our third location in South St. Louis County. We have three day-to-day retail locations, and in 2017, we opened our fleet division.” Along with impressive growth over the last four decades, each site offers a team of top-level experts. “As a whole, we have 16 OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) certifications, and with that comes specific training, tooling and equipment,” Goddard boasts. “We hold more certifications that any auto body company in St. Louis.” In addition, Car Craft Auto Body has two ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) master mechanics, who each have completed all eight certifications. The company is the only body shop in the area able to claim this level of expertise. “As the industry grows, the focus will become, ‘Who is most reliable and the least liable?’ That [answer] comes with training, certifications, and [proper] tooling and equipment,” Goddard attests.

MOSBY BUILDING ARTS

The Rembrandt of the Remodeling World By Amanda Dahl

M

osby Building Arts, a St. Louis design build firm, looks at each home project as an art project. That approach guarantees your space, even if it is a boring basement, will be turned into a masterpiece once Mosby is through with it. “We talk to clients about what they want to get out of the lower level,” design build business manager Jack Culian says. “What we’re really asking is what will make the homeowner feel like this is not just another room in the house?” Whether the answer is to entertain or accommodate an expanding family, Mosby’s talented crew will cater to the client’s needs, enhancing the space with additional bedrooms and baths, or even a bar, theater or game room. “The no. 1 challenge to overcome is making sure the basement space is properly constructed and approved,” Culian comments. “If the right steps aren’t taken, that can be damaging to the homeowner in the long run. We make sure the space is a true asset to the client.” Not only can clients trust that the proper work will be done to their valued space, but they can also count on Mosby excelling in another, equally important area. “It is our creativity that sets us apart,” Culian says. “The lower level can be one of the most utilized spaces in the home, when it is allowed to represent the homeowner’s personality. We create the atmosphere that answers that call.”

MOSBY BUILDING ARTS

Like a Rock By Amanda Dahl

M

osby Building Arts knows the value of a good expansion. Starting as a cabinetry business 71 years ago, the design build firm has remodeled itself time and again to meet the needs of its ever-growing client base. The key to that success begins where all other renovation projects do – with solid construction. “The [construction crews are] our people,” design build business manager Jack Culian emphasizes. “They represent our brand. They have a deep-rooted devotion to the company and take pride in the projects that they do. Our teams stay with each project until it is finished. The clients see no downtime.” With steady teams in place, no member is shifted mid-project to a new job, thereby ensuring efficient work. Those teams are as carefully developed as each client’s project. “We have a program, called Trades Work, that brings in apprentices to train,” Culian shares. “As long as they move through development, they [will receive] a full-time offer at the end of the program.” That ideology of staffing from the ground up has strengthened Mosby’s business, allowing it to create rock-solid relationships with every client. “We believe in the philosophy of ‘get in, get it done right and get out,’” Culian says. “We make sure it is done [correctly and to code] from the very start.”

ADVANCED NURSING SERVICES

From Our Family to Yours By Amanda Dahl

C

omfort and continuity of care are key components of what Advanced Nursing Services provides its clients. Launched in 1984, the home healthcare business demonstrates empathy for each client’s position, and offers to assist with their needs in a respectful and personal manner. “We know it’s hard to let a stranger into your home,” founder Maggie Holtman admits. “It’s all about putting together the right nursing aide or skilled nurse who fits our client’s needs. We are very good at doing that.” Holtman has maintained a small office staff to ensure each employee is dedicated to caring for clients with the same devotion as they would a member of their own family. “We get calls from people who are having same-day surgery and need someone there with them,” Holtman shares, “or people who are being discharged from the hospital and don’t want to go home alone. There isn’t anything we won’t do.” The team also assists clients during hospital stays. The people on her team are the same people Holtman would trust to take care of her when needed. That level of trust is something clients respond to and deeply appreciate. “We give really spectacular, one-on-one attention to our patients,” Holtman says. “They are the focus of everything. We’re still a lot like we were with our first patient, and I’m proud of that.”

Catering

BUTLER’S PANTRY

Tastes like Talent By Amanda Dahl

O

ne taste of what Butler’s Pantry has cooking will have you wanting more. “We’re a company that prides itself on delivering experiences,” Bridget Bitza, VP of sales and catering, says. “From president to sales manager, service captain to culinary department, we deliver an event that is customized for you.” Whether you are hosting a dinner party or your big day, the catering company excels at making you feel like you are its top priority. “The biggest challenge can be managing expectations,” Bitza admits. “We’re committed to excellence – not only in achieving a client’s wish, but also in exceeding their dream. It’s paramount that we begin by spending time anticipating and outlining the parameters of their distinct experience. If you’re hosting an outdoor event, when the heat index is 108 degrees, and you want a beautiful cheese display, we’ll handle the details of making that happen.” Butler’s Pantry expertly guides clients through the process of turning a dream setting into a reality by zeroing in on the details that will leave a lasting impression. “We take immense pride in treating each guest like he or she is our only priority,” Bitza says. “Brides and grooms want something reflective of their personalities. They’re less concerned with sticking to the basics of salads, chicken and cake. They’re thinking outside of the box, and that’s our wheelhouse!”

Those visions are achieved through memorable touches. For instance, a recent client met her fiancé while he was bartending, when she sat at the bar and ordered a Cobb salad. The catering company designed a menu around that concept and served wedding guests Cobb salads in martini shakers. Another couple goes out weekly to enjoy ice cream. Butler’s Pantry helped them share this favorite tradition with wedding guests by opting for a nontraditional ice cream dessert menu. “Although we’re a catering company, we’re not just a culinary department,” Bitza shares. “Butler’s Pantry is comprised of more than 500 employees, and includes an operations department, sales team, marketing team and more. Owner and president Richard Nix Jr. sets a high priority on culture. Each member of the Butler’s Pantry family values our philosophy of being rooted in tradition, but inspired by innovation. And this translates into everything that we produce.” This union of creative forces, backed by a solid work ethic, ensures Butler’s Pantry exceeds expectations. “We’ve been in business for more than 50 years,” Bitza says. “Delivering one-of-a-kind experiences shows through our food, exceptional staff and expert design team. At the end of the day, it is our goal to ensure that you can be a guest at your celebration. After all, it’s your table – and it’s our passion.”

NEXT PROJECT STUDIO

Home Remodeling, Reimagined By Emma Dent

R

ipped floors. Exposed pipes. Drywall dust hanging over the air like volcanic ash. Home remodeling projects are not exactly the stuff of fairytales. As co-owner and lead designer at Next Project Studio, a fullservice design and remodeling firm in St. Louis, Dana King is doing her best to elevate what can often be a stressful time for clients and contractors alike. “We strive to be the ‘Disneyland of contractors,’ meaning happy attitudes,” she says. King founded Next Project Studio as an interior design studio, but decided to expand her business into “a one-stop shop for home improvements.” She relates that this decision came after hearing clients’ home remodeling “horror stories,” and seeing a need for more competent service. Next Project Studio’s talented team of designers, project managers and contractors operate according to four core values: keep on budget, stay on timeline, remain friendly and always communicate well. While some design firms impose their own aesthetics on a space, Next Project Studio caters to all manner of styles. “We don’t have a signature style,” King shares. “All styles focus on the client. We are hyper-focused on our clients.” Certified in universal design, the Next Project Studio team is fluent in making spaces functional, yet visually appealing. The firm prides itself on putting clients first, collaborating and communicating with them at every stage of a project. The company follows a

three-part process for smoothly and efficiently completing home remodels. The first step is a consultation, during which the studio’s designers brainstorm with clients, draft a rough budget and discuss next steps. In the development phase, also known as “start smart,” the Next Project Studio team works with clients on drawings, and then guides them through product selections. “We open up a world to them through our trade-only resources,” states King. “We share our expertise about the nuances of design and remodeling, and what these can do for the home and for a client’s lifestyle.” At the conclusion of the development stage, Next Project Studio produces a concrete budget for clients, so that they can knowledgeably make decisions and move onto the final construction phase. “Our company doesn’t believe in estimates,” insists King. “There are ‘guesstimates’ and then there are real numbers.” To keep the lines of communication wide open – especially during construction – Next Project Studio utilizes an online project management tool that allows its project managers and designers to log their daily communications and update project status for clients. “Our mission is to help people live comfortably in their homes and to love their lifestyle,” declares King. “We get very excited to solve problems to better suit a person’s lifestyle. We believe there is always a solution.”

Dementia Care

PARC PROVENCE

Fulfilling Unique Needs for Those with Dementia By Connie Mitchell

E

ven before it opened 14 years ago, Parc Provence was a decade in the making. Ten years of research, planning, consulting, training and commitment went into the creation of this beautiful, homelike memory care community, explains Karen Tjaden, leasing director. “When you put it in perspective, 24 years ago, our company was going into unchartered territory – and a subject about which people had very little understanding,” Tjaden says. “Today, we realize that the foresight and hard work was well worth it, and something our community truly needed. Here, we continue to nurture and assist the families, as well as the residents.” Parc Provence brings a plethora of services together under one roof. Residents, who range from experiencing the earliest stages of dementia to those in the later stages, who need more specialized care, live in their own intimate households while enjoying more than 150,000 square feet of sunlit space, gardens, activities and as much independence as possible. “Families, including grandchildren and pets, love to visit in these beautiful surroundings,” Tjaden points out. “This customized design also affords our staff the proper workspaces they need to make great care happen.” Parc Provence is unique in its ability to offer a continuum of care through all stages of dementia. Even early-stage dementia presents specific needs, to which Parc Provence staff recognizes and responds. “Residents in the early

stages of dementia require an approach that consistently encourages them to use their strengths, continue making choices, and not only entertains them, but also truly engages them in activities,” Tjaden says. “However, due to the cognitive challenges, concerns that do not arise in traditional assisted living can be present.” Tjaden describes the care provided by Parc Provence to residents with earlystage dementia as “more protective, thorough and includes nursing 24 hours a day.” Traditional assisted living does not normally include all of this. Staff customize care based on residents’ social interactions, physical abilities and personal preferences, always treating them with dignity and respect. A varied schedule of activities is offered every day, including art and music therapy, and outings to enjoy the St. Louis area. More than 200 staff members at Parc Provence are given specialized training to help them understand the unique challenges of people with dementia. Ongoing education and training keeps staff current on the best standards of care for this specific segment of the aging population. “We continue to lead the way in memory care by never allowing ourselves to become static,” Tjaden says. “We constantly create, innovate, change with the times, and with our current residents and their families. It’s the only way to continue offering the very best to those we serve.”

Dry Cleaning

MARQUARD’S CLEANERS

Good Old-Fashioned Service Meets High-Tech Cleaning By Connie Mitchell

S

ince 1931, Marquard’s Cleaners has worked to establish itself as the finest dry cleaner in St. Louis, basing its reputation on three generations of service to the community. John Marquard began the legacy, instilling a dedication to excellence in his employees that remains the backbone of Marquard’s Cleaners’ business philosophy. “We have a real passion to serve other people,” says Steve Rimell, president. “My father used to say, ‘Treat the garment as if it’s yours, but better than if it was yours.’” Rimell’s father, Harvey, was one of Marquard’s original employees and purchased the business in the mid-1960s. Steve and his brother, Ken Rimell, began helping out when they were “as tall as the spotting board.” In addition to clothing, Marquard’s cleans area rugs, household textiles and draperies. The company also restores heirlooms, and cleans and preserves wedding gowns. Marquard’s prides itself in cleaning and restoring everything, from everyday items to delicate antique fabrics. “We return your fine clothing and household items beautifully cleaned and pressed, according to your instructions, on time as promised,” Rimell says. Living up to these standards, Marquard’s staff gives each customer individualized attention, becoming familiar with repeat customers, and

listening to concerns and specific requests, regarding fine garments. The closeknit team atmosphere that permeates the business at all levels allows for this kind of old-fashioned, customized service. Individual customer attention and an ongoing commitment to the original owner’s standards are the only old-fashioned aspects of the business, however. Marquard’s techniques and tools are the among the industry’s most current. As the exclusive St. Louis distributor of Fiber ProTector, Marquard’s takes dry cleaning to the pinnacle of industry technology. Fiber ProTector is based on advanced polymer technology that leaves an invisible shield around every fiber. It’s perfect for protecting valuable soft furnishings and carpets that would usually serve as a breeding ground for germs. “When a product comes along that is simply astounding and that product is matched with a company like ours, it is amazing,” Rimell notes. To maintain their expertise, Marquard’s staff learns new techniques and technologies through participation in national associations. Steve Rimell is former president of the Dry Cleaners Guild, and Ken Rimell’s chemistry degree has served him well in understanding the science of stain removal. “Dry cleaners are everywhere,” Steve Rimell notes, “but you won’t find better service or quality than at Marquard’s.”

Independent Living

THE GATESWORTH

The Comforts of Home in a Warm and Welcoming Environment By Connie Mitchell

T

he Gatesworth lifestyle is customized exclusively for seniors. This exceptional senior living community opened its doors in 1988, and assistant executive director Christie Wolff joined the team in 1994. “The vision for this community was to create a warm, comfortable, welcoming, and vibrant environment for our residents, and we’ve done just that over the years,” she says. About 340 independent seniors reside at The Gatesworth, enjoying daily continental breakfast, scheduled transportation, weekly housekeeping, concierge services, and a wide array of programs, services and entertainment. A 100-seat theater, computer center, card rooms, library, bank, gift shop, art center, greenhouse, spa, boutique and fitness center, with indoor saltwater pool, are among the amenities residents can enjoy. “We also have three restaurants offering distinct experiences,” Wolff notes. “The dining options also include full room service, cocktail and wine service, private catering, and holiday brunches. All meals are prepared by St. Louis Chef of the Year, Brian Hardy.” The Gatesworth has been named one of the top 10 places to retire in America by Forbes magazine, and Ladue News readers have voted it St. Louis’s best retirement community for numerous years. A locally-owned

establishment for its entire 30 years, each of the three Gatesworth owners who envisioned and launched this remarkable community still work on-site and are available, as needed. It’s not unusual for them to stop in and say hello to residents and staff, creating lasting relationships. Many other staff members also have served The Gatesworth for years, or even decades. “Another aspect that sets us apart from other independent living communities is that our residents are able to keep and invest their money as they see fit because we’re a rental community, with no entry or endowment fees,” Wolff states. “This ensures future financial stability that is self-guided, as opposed to a buy-in community where a resident’s financial success can be at risk depending on the success of the community.” This autonomy is important to maintaining residents’ financial independence and security. “For three decades, residents and their families have told us that there is no other senior community anywhere like The Gatesworth,” Wolff says. “That’s a reputation we strive to maintain by earning it anew each and every day. For our incredible owners and staff, the bar is never static – it rises constantly to adapt to the wishes of those who call The Gatesworth home.”

SAVVY SURROUNDING STYLE

Design for Living By Emma Dent

“D

eciphering a client’s vision, and translating that into a design concept, can be a challenge,” admits designer Kathleen Matthews of Savvy Surrounding Style, a full-service, upscale interior design firm in St. Louis. Whether you’re looking to reimagine an individual room or your entire home, Savvy’s experienced and inventive designers are prepared to meet the challenge. “I believe in the power of a beautifully designed space, and consider both form and function,” emphasizes Matthews. “My process is completely focused on the needs and wants of the client. Each project is unique and customized.” At Savvy, designers take a homeowner’s vision and transform it into a timeless interior that best reflects their lifestyle. Using renderings, mood boards and samples, the firm’s designers collaborate with the client on an aesthetic direction, pinpointing their desires, while also staying mindful of their budget. The designers particularly relish the opportunity to see a project through from its conception, whether that’s a new construction home or a complete remodel. “Starting a project from the beginning allows our team to be involved in every detail, so there is continuity, creativity and personalization,” shares Matthews. To maintain their expertise, the team stays current with industry trends by attending markets and professional events. “We have long-term and mutually respectful relationships with industry partners,” states Matthews. Designers will even travel across the country to find exclusive products for clients. Due in part to this network, as well as the dedication and creativity of Savvy’s designers, clients can rest assured that their spaces will be one-of-a-kind.

SAVVY SURROUNDING STYLE

Where Form Meets Function By Emma Dent

A

faded museum print from the 1980s hangs sadly on a drab gray wall. Halogen lighting casts a harsh glow over mismatched chairs. Dusty fake plants take refuge in the corners. Whether it’s a doctor’s office waiting room or a corporate conference room, we’ve all been in these kinds of spaces. The commercial interior design work produced by the innovative and creative Savvy Surrounding Style team is worlds away from this lifeless picture. From the futuristic lighting and warm umber tones of The Caramel Room at Bissinger’s to the airy, industrial-meets-rustic vibe of Bissinger’s Chocolate Shoppe, Savvy-designed spaces are dynamic, yet approachable. “Functionality and practicality are most important with commercial clients,” notes designer Brett Clark. “We look at the space at the macro and micro levels. The macro level [considers] the context of the neighborhood, whereas the micro level is about looking at the actual area in detail. Often times, the relationship between these two help guide the design concept.” “Inspiration is everywhere,” proclaims Kathleen Matthews, another Savvy designer. For commercial projects, a designer may pore over old photos of a space to drive the direction of its reimagined design. Or, inspiration might spring from art, travel and design history. “It’s a designer’s job to think outside of the box, while managing all aspects of a space and its design,” she maintains. Although commercial clients work with an individual designer, they benefit from the expertise of the entire Savvy team. “The design staff at Savvy collaborates behind the scenes,” explains Clark. “We set realistic expectations, create a timeline and organize the project in a time-efficient manner.”

Jewelry - Custom

GENOVESE JEWELERS

One-of-a-Kind Design By Emma Dent

G

enovese Jewelers makes the art and science of custom jewelry-making both easy and affordable. “The myth that custom jewelry is expensive is false,” declares the store’s president, Joe Genovese. “Most jewelers outsource 90 percent of their materials and manufacturing. We never have to source out anything because we carry everything, from diamonds to gemstones, in-house.” Genovese Jewelers is at the vanguard of custom jewelry design. Twenty years ago, a skilled artisan would hand-carve a wax model for each individual piece, a painstaking process that could take days to complete. When Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology emerged roughly fifteen years ago, Genovese Jewelers was one of its first adoptees. “At the time, no other jewelers, except for large-scale manufacturers, were using this technology,” says Genovese. CAD/CAM specialists first create a computerized image of the custom piece based off of a rough sketch. That design is then transformed into a wax model using a 3D printer, rather than by hand. “These machines work 24/7, allowing us to make a better-quality piece of jewelry with greater ease,” emphasizes Genovese. “We save both time and labor.” On any given day, eight sales associates and four full-time CAD/CAM designers – working with three 3D printers – are busy consulting with clients

to produce everything from elaborate engagement rings to simple charms to statement belt buckles in silver, platinum, white and yellow gold. “We can make anything,” promises Genovese. “But, jewelry-making is not just about beauty and design. It takes a lot of engineering, and the piece has to hold up to wear. We try to guide clients on what’s best, what’s practical and what’s possible. Our goal is to help them create the prettiest piece of jewelry that we can.” While some customers come in with a specific design in mind, or an heirloom to refashion, that’s certainly not a requirement. The expert team at Genovese Jewelers knows just the right questions to ask and will collaborate with clients on the initial sketch that’s given to CAD/CAM designers. Genovese and his staff communicate with the clients at every step of the design process. And, clients can continue to make changes in the sketching, 3D rendering and wax modeling stages. “Every one of these steps is done here,” states Genovese. “We have complete control and are incredibly vertically integrated.” Because of that integration, Genovese Jewelers is able to produce a custom piece in around two weeks’ time, and sometimes even less. “If you buy a ring or a necklace from us, you’re not getting something that’s mass-produced,” assures Genovese. “I love the fact that we’re not just making jewelry in America, but right here in St. Louis.”

CHESTERFIELD VALLEY NURSERY

Cultivating Relationships By Amanda Dahl

C

hesterfield Valley Nursery cultivates more than green spaces in the St. Louis area. It also nourishes relationships through equal devotion to clients and craft, with a respect for nurturing growth. “It can be easy to find yourself stuck in a rut,” Andria Graeler, assistant to the GM, says. “To keep consistent business, you have to ask, what can you do better? We look for new, innovative ideas. If you stay where you are or just try to stay current, you’re actually lagging behind. We research and try out new plants every year.” Graeler has her hands in many pots at Chesterfield Valley Nursery, as she also assists with social media and content management. Her diverse work experience allows her to thoroughly examine how and where the company excels. “We’re into cultivating relationships, whether it be with our clients, contractors or vendors,” she describes. This year, Chesterfield Valley Nursery boasts more plant materials on-site than ever before. After a reconfiguration of the nursery over the wintertime, more room was made to expand its offerings and create an easy traffic flow. “Almost anyone can run a business,” Graeler says. “Our goal at Chesterfield Valley Nursery is to set ourselves apart by going above and beyond for our clients, because they deserve the best from us.”

oving is stressful enough without finding your one-of-a-kind Oriental rug stuffed into a microwave, or a nasty gash in your Empire mahogany chest. The team at Renew Transfer, a high-end moving company based in St. Louis, and with locations in Dallas, Cincinnati, Kansas City and San Francisco, understands that your valuables are just that: valuable. It’s no wonder that premier furniture retailers, including Ethan Allen and Restoration Hardware, also trust Renew Transfer to deliver their products. “The majority of moving companies come into your home, bid the job, write down a bunch of notes and then pass the job off to the actual moving crew,” says company president, Matt Walker. At Renew Transfer, Mike Capriglione, director of moving operations, leads the majority of moves, overseeing jobs from start to finish. “Mike is the person walking through your home with an iPad, taking notes and pictures, and answering your questions,” explains Walker. “And, he’s also the one who arrives with a team on moving day.” Renew Transfer distinguishes itself from competitors by assembling a very particular kind of team, one filled with motivated, disciplined college athletes and police academy students. By adhering to this recruiting model, the company makes certain that each hire is “a cut above – a high-character and engaged person, as opposed to someone who is just floating through life,” emphasizes Walker. “We have far and away the youngest moving crew. The average age is 23. We take personality over experience.” With straightforward pricing that includes an hourly rate, and no surprise charges, plus a minimum of $25,000 of insurance per truck, Renew Transfer consistently ensures that clients and their possessions are treated with care and respect. “If people only choose us because we won’t damage their stuff, that’s a pretty low bar,” states Walker. “We aim well beyond that.”

Lawn & Garden

RITTER LANDSCAPING, INC.

You Know Us. You Trust Us. By Amanda Dahl

A

ndy Ritter forged a new path when he began Ritter Landscaping, Inc. Born into a family of doctors, he determined he had a different calling after completing a year of college in Dallas. Ritter then launched his own lawn maintenance company, which has endured for more than 40 years. The local community embraced Ritter’s bold move. He had the support of his family, including his father and uncle, who collectively have delivered more than 20,000 babies in the St. Louis area over a span of four decades. Ritter’s father gifted his son the family’s International Harvester Cub Cadet tractor in exchange for a lifetime of lawn maintenance – a good deal for both father and son! Soon, the small company expanded into a full-service landscaping business, and today, its services include: mowing and trimming; turf fertilizing and weed control; ornamental bed maintenance; leaf removal and spring cleanup; lawn renovation through aerating and seeding; and landscape design and build, plus winter services. Ritter quickly recognized that clients preferred doing business with one company, which challenged him to meet all of their outdoor needs. With

a wide range of services, customers’ demands are consistently met, even for special requests, such as parties or post-storm clean-ups. His adaptive attitude and skill set have earned the company decades of devoted clients, who have sent second generations his way. Over the years, Ritter also noticed many industry changes in equipment, products, personnel – and even weather patterns. Ritter Landscaping, Inc. invests annually in state-of-the-art equipment to keep pace. Specializing in maintaining high-end residential homes and commercial properties throughout Ladue and its surrounding communities, Ritter Landscaping, Inc.’s success can mainly be attributed to employee loyalty, according to its owner. With the average employee logging 10-plus years of experience at the company, the vast majority have earned an applicator’s license in the state of Missouri and continually train to stay on top of industry developments. Each employee’s dedication has added up to make the true Ritter difference. “The ability to dispatch veteran employees familiar with each customer’s unique preferences has proven invaluable,” Ritter says. “See for yourself what so many loyal, satisfied West County homeowners have [already] discovered.”

HAIS, HAIS & GOLDBERGER, P.C.

Family at the Heart By Amanda Dahl

A

ccording to Susan and Sam Hais, family law is their polestar – a directing principle that drives their professional goals. Family has served as Susan and Sam Hais’s greatest joy, and as a guide from which they draw insight into the complex dynamics of sharing their lives, hopes and dreams. Through the family law firm, Hais, Hais & Goldberger, P.C., the Haises are able to extend that experienced guidance to other families as they pursue the often complicated path toward healing. “We help our clients navigate the difficult times of coping with relationships that have gone astray and try to repair them, if possible, or move on if necessary,” Sam Hais says. When Susan Hais entered family law, not many women were present, and she discovered that scarcity would allow her to make her mark. “Susan’s enormous talent as a litigator and negotiator is astonishing,” Sam Hais believes. “Clients frequently comment on her ability to listen to renditions of problems. She suggests a course of action that seldom, if ever, disappoints.

That is her genius – and it is awe-inspiring to watch.” Her husband, Sam Hais, spent 25 years as a judge and now works on the other side of the bench. “Sam’s experiences with family law, combined with mine, add up to an excellent formula for providing insight and advice,” Susan Hais says. “This gives us a high potential for success in resolving cases to the satisfaction of our clients.” Helping others in their pursuit of happiness assures the Haises that they chose the right career path. At the end of the day, they reflect, it all comes back to the clients they serve. “There is no cookie-cutter result that works for each client,” Susan Hais notes. “You have to be flexible in finding what’s best for them and for the children involved.” It is with that unique understanding that the law firm is able to achieve the best possible outcomes for its clients. Susan and Sam Hais continue to love what they do professionally, personally and for the sake of, as they say, seeing that “justice remains a right – not a privilege.”

WILSON LIGHTING

Lighting the Way By Emma Dent | Photo by Sarah Conroy

F

rom table lamps to ceiling fans to chandeliers and more, Wilson Lighting carries a vast array of indoor and outdoor lighting options. “Our selection really distinguishes us from other competitors,” declares the store’s general manager, Bob Rabinowitz. “We carry so many different brands – several hundred – that it would be difficult to name all of them.” The store’s options extend well beyond lighting. “People who come into the showroom are often surprised to find that we also carry artwork and home accessories, like mirrors,” notes Rabinowitz. Indeed, buyers from Wilson Lighting travel to trade shows throughout the United States and around the world, from Europe to Asia, to source singular lighting and home furnishings. “We source one-of-a-kind, exotic products from Old World European artisans, some of whom have been in business since the 1800s,” emphasizes the company’s VP, Brian Wilson. One such brand is Mariner, a globally-renowned purveyor of luxury lighting. Wilson Lighting equally prioritizes value, ensuring that its high-quality, stylish products are always attractively priced. To offer clients the best possible value, the company has partnered with some of the top factories and product designers around the world to create the Mariana Home product line, which is exclusive to Wilson Lighting. ‘There’s no better value in the industry than when you can deal with a local company, like ours, that provides products without a manufacturer markup,” affirms Wilson. “Because of the relationships we’ve cultivated throughout the world, we’re

able to offer our customers incredible value.” And at Wilson Lighting, you’ll never have to worry about discovering the perfect fixture or accessory in the showroom, only to find that it’s out of stock and will take six to eight weeks to ship. With a combined 36,000 square feet of space, half of the Clayton store is dedicated to the showroom and the other half to an immense, on-site warehouse. “We have back stock of almost everything,” Rabinowitz emphasizes. That convenience is simply part of Wilson Lighting’s commitment to clients. “We offer better-than-internet pricing,” says Wilson, “and there are enormous benefits to working with local suppliers. Should something not be perfect, we are here to rectify the situation and to take care of our customers. We stand behind our products, and offer services and support that they simply won’t find online or in big-box stores.” Although Wilson Lighting has been in operation since 1975 – and includes locations in Overland Park, Kansas, Naples, Florida and Bonita Springs, Florida – the company only entered the St. Louis market in 2015. Since then, however, the centrally-located Clayton store has become an essential resource for homeowners, custom home builders, interior designers and architects across the bi-state and metropolitan areas. “We have a knowledgeable, friendly staff,” encourages Wilson. “Whether you’re building a home or just looking for an individual item, come see us! You’ll be glad you did.”

EQUITY PRIME MORTGAGE

Choosing the Right Home & Lender By Amanda Dahl

A

ll the pretty houses, lined in a row. How to choose one? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Alright, so maybe it’s not quite that simple. When you are ready to choose a house of your very own, though, one company can start the process for you, making it seem almost effortless and definitely fun. “Equity Prime Mortgage is a big company with small, local offices,” VP of sales Ryan Sanford describes of the Atlanta-based corporation. “The St. Louis office has a personal feel. I aim to be really hands-on and knowledgeable. I give people looking for a home multiple financing options to make sure they find one that fits their family’s needs.” Whether you are in a position to buy a home today, or need help in getting to that point, Sanford will work with you to create a plan of action. His wealth of knowledge proves a valuable resource in building your credit, if needed, and mapping out your next move. Sanford and the team at Equity Prime Mortgage strive to stay ahead of the market to ensure clients, especially first-time homebuyers, receive the best benefits possible. They make themselves available to clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Ninety percent of people shop for homes on the weekend,” Sanford

explains. “Someone needs to be available. We’re the team that is going to be available for our clients.” Sanford’s team, which includes his wife and father, works together in an inviting environment where the home loan process is simplified and clients feels valued, whether or not they can buy a home on day one. “Turnaround times in our office exceed many in the industry because most have to go through a middleman,” Sanford says. “Everything is underwritten in-house with Equity Prime Mortgage and then sold directly to Fannie Mae, Ginnie Mae and Freddie Mac. Typical turnaround times here surpass our competition’s, with our underwriting [occurring in] under 48 hours.” That is not the only area in which Sanford and his team excel. “Even before you put an offer on a house, I can have your file underwritten as a TBD,” Sanford adds. “Instead of a pre-approval, which every lender does, I take it a step further and give you that loan commitment before you even go under contract.” The numerous benefits of direct lending make Equity Prime Mortgage a clear winner. So, when you’re ready to choose your home, make sure you have these experts on your team.

Real Estate – Relocation

LAURA MCCARTHY REAL ESTATE

The Welcoming Committee By Amanda Dahl

A

t Laura McCarthy Real Estate, the Relocation department is rolling out the welcome mat for newcomers, and showing them what makes St. Louis the ideal place to call home. “In the early 1990s, Laura McCarthy Relocation was one of the first residential relocation departments to be established,” explains relocation director Lindsey Sutherland. “The relocation and mobility industry constantly changes to fit the needs of corporate clients, relocation management companies and transferees. [The department] focuses on providing excellent service and care from day one.” The team successfully provides clients a bigger picture of what their lives will look like, based on preferences and needs, and how the area can accommodate their unique lifestyles. At the Cartus Broker Conference this past March, Laura McCarthy Relocation, a preferred brokerage for all Relocation Management Companies in the industry, was awarded Gold Status, the Five Star Award and the Destination Services Award. It is the top United States brokerage in sales conversion, as well as customer satisfaction for buyers. The department has earned its noteworthy status through a dedication to advancing its team members’ knowledge base. “I serve on the board of the St. Louis Employee Relocation Council, and am a member of the Worldwide

and Midwest Employee Relocation Council, which requires continuing education sessions,” describes Sutherland. She holds a Corporate Relocation Professional designation, as well, which enables her to assist in the training and recertification that her team takes on twice a year. Together, they talk trends, technology, real estate contract changes and other related topics. “The clients have short windows to move to St. Louis,” recognizes Sutherland. “They must acclimate to a new job, new city, new school system, et cetera. The move not only affects the employee, but also their family. It is our job to be an ambassador for St. Louis and the employee. We not only focus on househunting, but also on their lifestyle and requirements. We form a relationship that extends past the closing date, bringing our vast resources to bear.” Laura McCarthy Relocation understands how imperative it is to alleviate a highly stressful situation for families by taking care of the details and offering guidance at every step of the transition. For this department, that process begins with unity among colleagues and a recognition of talents. “A team and family culture is prevalent among our agents and managers,” says Sutherland. “It is one of the main reasons I chose to join Laura McCarthy. The real estate industry is collaborative – and the more support you have, the more effectively you can serve clients.”

Real Estate: Rural Property

ERIC MERCHANT, REAL ESTATE AGENT

Need a Rural Escape? Eric Merchant’s Your Man By Connie Mitchell

S

ometimes you just have to get away from it all. When that desire becomes a siren call to find a retreat away from the hustle of city and suburban life, Eric Merchant is ready to help. Merchant has 28 years of experience with all types of real estate – residential, commercial and land – and his extensive experience with land development and rural land management gives him an edge when it comes to finding rural property for hunting, fishing, recreation or investment purposes. Merchant’s expertise extends to pond or lake construction, stocking and fisheries management, wildlife management, and timber stand management. “In short, if it has to do with real estate in Missouri, I can handle it and handle it well,” he says. An agent with Trophy Properties, Merchant has three goals every day: “Show up, try not to screw up, and put others before ourselves.” Helping meet those goals are Tammy Eigenman, Serena Huntebrinker, Dexter Keuss April Sweeso and Steve Bish – and the team has a combined 50 years of experience. “This approach has been getting us excellent results for almost three decades, and a steady stream of repeat clients,” he notes. Merchant doesn’t just sell real estate, he invests in it himself, giving him a unique perspective and understanding of clients’ positions. “We have

residential investment property, industrial properties, retail commercial properties and agricultural/recreational investment properties,” he says. “Because we’ve been managing these properties for many years, we’ve had to deal with the day-to-day issues that arise with any such ownership. This gives us a keen eye and awareness of many of the issues, problems and pitfalls associated with various properties.” Problem-solving and service after closing are points of pride for Merchant. Clients often stay in touch long after a sale is complete, and Merchant gladly assists with maintenance and emergency situations. He says this ongoing commitment is simply another sign of his team’s determination to give every client the best service possible. In fact, Merchant credits his coworkers with much of the team’s continued success. “I’ve always hired from within, and this gave me the opportunity to observe the team’s work ethic. They are outstanding, loyal and very hard working.” And they share Merchant’s outlook on the business: “I love what I do, and I take it very seriously,” he says. “I work long hours almost every day. I don’t have to – I want to. It’s the right thing to do.” Photos above are of active listings belonging to UC Trophy Properties & Auction. For details, call Eric Merchant at 314-541-1218.

KONNY SCHAEFFER, REAL ESTATE AGENT

When It’s the Right Time to “Right-Size” By Emma Dent

F

or Konny Schaeffer, grief brought an unexpected and reinvigorated sense of purpose. Schaeffer had been working as a real estate agent in St. Louis for more than 20 years when her father passed away in 2012. As she went through the process of getting the family home ready to sell, Schaeffer began to consider other seniors in similar positions. “I realized the need for specialists who can help people ‘right-size’ into their new lives, or those of their loved ones,” shares Schaeffer. “These are people who may have lived in their home for many years and don’t need a large home anymore, or find that their current home no longer fits their lifestyle. These homeowners often face very specific challenges, including financial, logistical and emotional issues that can cause them to feel overwhelmed by the process.” Schaeffer’s personal experience prompted her to become a certified Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), an agent who specializes in working with clients aged 50 and older. Schaeffer emphasizes that her work is focused on helping seniors “right-size,” not “downsize.” The distinction is subtle, but important. Whereas downsizing implies loss, “right-sizing” is about gaining freedom and finding greater happiness. “It’s not always that you can’t manage,” explains Schaeffer. “It may just be time to own less and live more.” As an SRES, Schaeffer is a one-stop resource for clients navigating these major transitions. She offers organizing, packing and move management services, as well as provides a range of referrals – from handymen to attorneys to benefits offices, and more. With this kind of comprehensive, “old-fashioned service,” it’s no surprise that Schaeffer remains St. Louis’s go-to senior real estate specialist.

Retirement Planning

RETIRE FAMILY TRUST

DREAM

VISION

HEISE ADVISORY GROUP

Independent Advice, Individualized Attention By Emma Dent

W

hat do you value most in life? The answer is most likely family. That’s certainly the case for Ken and Lori Heise. “Our family is everything to us,” Lori Heise says. In 2007, she and husband Ken founded Heise Advisory Group, a retirement planning firm in St. Louis that helps other families navigate the financial complexities posed by this new life stage. The team at Heise Advisory Group builds trust with their clients by treating them not as numbers, but as valued individuals. “We refer to clients as our families,” she says. “We’re about enriching their lives in every way possible because we want them to be with us for the rest of their lives.” Unlike other financial firms beholden to larger corporate interests, Heise Advisory Group is completely independent. After having worked for insurance companies that promised, but failed to deliver, unbiased advice, Ken Heise aspired to a different philosophy. “When Lori and I decided to form our own group, we wanted to eliminate the conflict of interest of a parent company pushing its clients in a certain direction,” he explains. “That’s a huge separator for us. We’re 100 percent independent, family-owned and St. Louis-local. We work for our families – meaning our clients – and for no one else.” In order to create a comprehensive retirement plan for clients, Heise Advisory Group developed a five-step process, which includes an initial consultation, or “vision meeting.” During that 90-minute session, the group’s advisors meet one-on-one with clients, listening to their dreams and concerns.

“We spend a lot of time helping families realize that they have to determine their dream and then put a price tag on it,” reveals Ken Heise. “What does your monthly budget need to look like in order to do everything that you want to do? The answer to that question forms the basis of everything moving forward.” Once families arrive at an answer, Ken and Lori Heise guide them through the rest of the retirement planning process, which includes assessment, strategy and implementation. “Our practice is holistic,” declares Lori Heise. “We handle everything, from income planning to investment, tax, healthcare and estate planning. It’s a complete package.” While many financial advisory institutions prioritize investment planning, Heise Advisory Group concentrates on income planning and is particularly attentive to market volatility. “The purpose of any investment plan should be to support the income plan,” advises Ken Heise. “Everyone likes to focus on returns, but it’s not about returns at retirement. It’s about managing volatility. It’s paramount to understand that finances work differently after you give up your paycheck. The impact of decisions made and losses incurred on a retiree, or someone who is entering retirement, is game-changing.” The fifth and final step is what the pair refers to as the “long-term fun relationship.” “We host a lot of client events and parties, and we occasionally go out for dinner with our clients,” says Lori Heise. “We want to add value to each other’s lives and have fun together.”

Neither the firm nor its agents or representatives may give tax or legal advice. Individuals should consult with a qualified professional for guidance before making any purchasing decisions. Investment advisory services offered only by duly registered individuals through AE Wealth Management, LLC (AEWM). AEWM and Heise Advisory Group are not affiliated companies. AW07183439

MARI DE VILLA

Be Our Guest By Emma Dent

F

ounded by Joseph and Georgana Linneman in 1960, Mari de Villa was one of the first senior living communities of its kind in Missouri. Now, nearly 60 years later – and under the capable management team of Fred and Mary Kay Wiesehan for more than 30 years – Mari de Villa continues to offer superlative senior living care in a picturesque, country club-like atmosphere. The community’s experienced and compassionate staff so believes in their calling to serve that individuals who call Mari de Villa home are not residents. They are simply guests. What began as a 26-room community has blossomed into a sprawling, 22-acre campus in Town and Country that caters to a range of senior living needs, from independent living to skilled nursing, memory care and skilled rehab. The 54 independent living villas that comprise the Villa Estates feature multiple layouts and sizes to accommodate individual lifestyles and preferences. With off-campus activities, a speaker series, an indoor swimming pool, exercise classes and much more, guests of the Villa Estates find no trouble filling their social calendars. A 24-hour emergency call system ensures that even independent seniors have full access to proper medical care when they need it.

In addition to these villas, Mari de Villa’s main building houses special areas for all-inclusive skilled nursing, as well as memory care. From guests requiring 24-hour bedside care to those still able to drive themselves, Mari de Villa’s staff tailors its skilled nursing care to guests’ individual needs. Likewise, Mari de Villa’s professional memory care team brings personalized attention and sensitivity to guests managing advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, dementia and other memory impairments. Designed in collaboration with the Greater Missouri chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the 10 private rooms devoted to memory care marry specialized support and exceptional comfort, with access to Mari de Villa’s scenic grounds. For individuals seeking rehabilitative care, Mari de Villa’s Waterford Wing also includes eight private suites dedicated to skilled rehab services and a complete therapy department. As a single location senior living community that is both family-owned and operated, Mari de Villa is able to prioritize its guests and their individual wants above all else. That’s the Mari de Villa difference.

MCKNIGHT PLACE SKILLED NURSING

Providing Excellence in Short- and Long-Term Care By Connie Mitchell

W

hether an individual is recovering from a surgery or illness, and in need of short-term rehabilitation, or facing a longer period of skilled nursing care, McKnight Place Skilled Nursing provides peace of mind. “We offer exceptional nursing care, as well as a full complement of therapy services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy,” says marketing director Christina Schulte. Specialized therapy for specific conditions, such as lymphedema, is provided by a therapist trained to treat these disorders, and all staff receive special training in dementia care. “In addition, our wide variety of social events helps residents stay engaged in meaningful activities throughout the day,” Schulte says. “Each resident has different preferences and needs, and our personalized care ensures that each resident’s expectations are met.” The mood is lively as residents and staff participate in special activities designed for enrichment and enjoyment. Music therapy and art expression are popular choices, and daily exercise programs are designed to keep residents active.

Some activities are simply for fun and help maintain the community spirit at McKnight Place Skilled Nursing. Speakers present intriguing programs that spark ideas and conversation. Ensembles and bands make toes tap and fingers snap. Small groups enjoy card games, craft projects and cooking demonstrations. No matter how much fun they have, the most important thing for residents and their families is quality of care. “Our staff is excellent in the care they provide,” Schulte says. “We truly work as a team to make each day exceptional for our residents. One of the reasons we’re able to do this is because of the longevity in key care positions and our management team. Residents and their families benefit from having experienced, well-trained staff here to help them.” “McKnight Place Skilled Nursing, like all of The Gatesworth communities, is locally owned,” Schulte adds. “That makes a difference to our residents, their families and employees. The owners are here, on-site, to address any concerns that may arise. They also care deeply for the community and have chosen to build senior living worthy of their own friends and family – and it shows.”

Sleep Solutions

THE BACK STORE

Rest Easy By Emma Dent

I

n 2010, Jonathan Handyside opened The Back Store in Mid Rivers Mall. The store was the first in St. Louis to offer the entire Tempur-Pedic line. Fast forward eight years and The Back Store now boasts two showrooms in Plaza Frontenac and the Saint Louis Galleria. Although the original location has since closed, one thing that hasn’t changed is the superior service, extensive inventory and competitive pricing that The Back Store offers customer seeking a good night’s rest. “We still carry the largest selection of the Tempur-Pedic line,” says Handyside, the store’s founder and chief executive sleeper. “There are TempurPedic products you’ll find in our stores that you simply won’t see elsewhere. We carry all 15 Tempur-Pedic lines, including accessories like pillows and slippers.” In addition to its unparalleled selection of Tempur-Pedic products, The Back Store also stocks REM-Fit, a more moderately priced, direct-to-consumer mattress brand. Shipped directly to your home within 48 hours and with an average price point of $1,000, REM-Fit mattresses save customers both time and money. Customers can purchase REM-Fit mattresses in one of The Back Store’s showrooms, or even order online. Although there are a number of box-to-home mattress brands on the market, Handyside and his team researched and specifically chose REM-Fit for its all-around value. “We looked at all of the leading brands to see what they

were offering consumers,” explains Handyside. “We opted for REM-Fit because the brand offers the best product – a Queen bed for under $1,000 – and longer warranties. And, with four comfort options, it also give customers a choice.” At The Back Store, the customer is always the focus. “We try to sell beds a little differently than our competitors,” maintains Handyside. “It’s not really about the mattress. It’s about the sleeper. We focus on four areas of sleep comfort: pressure relief, proper alignment or support, temperature regulation and partner disturbance.” For customers seeking other forms of rest and relaxation, The Back Store also sells a selection of high-end, full-body massage chairs, which run from $2,000 up to $10,000. “As consumers invest more in their health, they’ve begun to realize that it’s not just about sleep. It’s about having 30 minutes of downtime before you go to work or before you head to bed.” Whether you’re in the market for a new pillow, a mattress upgrade or a luxury massage recliner, The Back Store’s expert team is ready to help you find the product that best fits your needs and budget. “I’ve got store managers and staff that have been with me for nearly 15 years, even in previous business,” says Handyside. “We’re very consumer-oriented and less product-oriented. Our staff knows the products so well, and they know how to ask the right questions. We’re dedicated to improving sleep.”

Rather than having to ask Alexa or Siri about a particular destination, Brentwood Travel’s clients are able to consult directly with on-site experts. “We frequently conference in specialists to speak with our clients,” shares Acree. “Say, you’ve never been to Costa Rica. We’ll have our Costa Rica specialist answer all of your questions.” Although the Hawaiian Islands, Australia and European cities, like London

and Paris, remain perennially popular, Acree has noticed an uptick in requests for less mainstream destinations. Some of these trendy, under-the-radar spots include Costa Rica, Iceland, and Scandinavian countries, like Norway and Sweden. Eastern European cities with less visibility, but equally rich histories, like Budapest and Prague, are in greater demand now, as well. European river cruising is also a favorite with Brentwood Travel’s clients, not to mention Acree herself. “It’s my absolute favorite trip,” she enthuses. “River cruising is a great alternative for people who are afraid of the ocean, because the river is so calm. With only 150 passengers, it’s like floating on a small boutique hotel. Every day, you wake up in a new city, with a guide waiting to show you around.” Whether it’s a cruise along the Danube River or a multi-city tour of Italy or France, Acree finds that travelers increasingly “want experiences tailored to their interests, from biking to cooking to yoga.” “Traveling today is not easy,” Acree concedes, “but we are highly experienced, well-trained and have the right contacts to ask for amenities, upgrades or just that extra special something. From daily breakfast to early check-ins to a bottle of wine in the room, we can secure extras for clients that most other people can’t.”

Tree Services THE DAVEY TREE EXPERT COMPANY

Davey Tree Certified Arborists Provide Expert Tree Care By Connie Mitchell

J

ohnny Appleseed may have wanted to plant trees, but John Davey wanted to preserve them. In 1873, Davey came to America from England to fulfill that dream, and in 1880, he founded The Davey Tree Expert Company. Since then, Davey Tree has become one of the largest employee-owned companies in America. “At Davey Tree, trees are just the beginning. We continue to grow to new heights,” says Tom Beshoar, district manager. The company services homes, businesses, cities, golf courses, cemeteries, parks, campus facilities and more. “Our St. Louis location opened more than 100 years ago and has grown to serve clients across Missouri and Illinois,” he notes. Beshoar is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist, a licensed pesticide applicator and a certified first responder who has been with Davey Tree for 20 years. The Davey Tree crew foremen who report to him are also certified arborists, providing expert tree care and knowledgeably treating pests and diseases. In addition to insect and disease management, Davey Tree offers tree removal, fertilization and landscaping. “We also assist customers by sharing our expertise on topics such as vegetation health care, watering recommendations and planting techniques,” Beshoar adds. “We’re happy to help keep your property in excellent shape.”

Tuckpointing MASSEY TUCKPOINTING & MASONRY

Improving Homes & Lives By Amanda Dahl

M

assey Tuckpointing & Masonry has a reputation for quality work and customer service that is above all others. Owner Michelle Massey puts it simply: “We make sure our presentation and customer service is better than anybody else’s in the industry. I like to be treated that way – so, that is how we treat our customers.” From tuckpointing to chimney sweeping and brick or stone repairs, Massey Tuckpointing & Masonry excels at every level. With a WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) designation, the company boasts ownership of a coveted Better Business Bureau Torch Award for 2013 – an honor only doled out to five companies nationwide each year. According to Massey, that distinction was earned by adhering to a daily duty of delivering the best to clients – and she doesn’t do it alone. “My husband volunteers to train students at Job Corps,” Massey says of the company’s newest recruitment process. Massey Tuckpointing & Masonry employs students who graduate from Job Corps, giving them a paid apartment and covering the cost of utilities. Massey and her husband also supplied tools to the Job Corps classroom, which now supports up to 12 students. She looks at it as “our gift back to the community.”

Wealth Management

CLAYTON FINANCIAL GROUP

A Wealth of Experience By Emma Dent

A

t Clayton Financial Group, independence is key to providing expert and impartial wealth management services to clients. “Our independence doesn’t indebt us to any other revenue sources than our clients,” says Chris Michalak, managing director of the firm’s Michalak Team. “That allows us to be completely objective.” Organized into four teams – Bahr, Bower, Britt and Michalak – Clayton Financial Group offers clients individualized advisement in a collaborative environment. “Our teams are responsible for their respective clients, but we work together,” explains Michalak. “We share resources, ideas and years of experience in the financial services industry. An individual client benefits from the breadth and depth of expertise of the entire firm.” At Clayton Financial Group, advisors work closely with clients to create comprehensive plans that address pensions and retirement, education expenses, estate preparation, and other life events that impact financial health. “We always begin with a client’s goals,” maintains Michalak. “We discuss what they are trying to accomplish. Then, it’s about looking at the resources that will allow them to achieve those goals.” Over his 20-plus years in the industry, Michalak has become familiar with some of the biggest challenges facing clients, especially families, as they financially prepare for the future. In particular, Michalak recommends that clients be realistic about their expenditures. “Clients

need to be honest about their spending requirements as they head into retirement,” he advises. “I’ve seen so many clients spend more than they think they do, and it’s hard for them to recalibrate once they retire.” Although clients typically begin seeking Clayton Financial Group’s wealth management services in their 40s and 50s – as they near retirement – the firm’s expertise has inspired younger generations to take a progressive approach to their finances. To wit, Michalak has worked with a number of legacy clients, children of existing advisees who approach him after securing their first post-college positions. Michalak encourages all clients, whether they’re at the dawn or in the twilight of their careers, to take ownership of their finances. “People need to be serious about their finances and to be engaged in the planning process,” he states. “Things change so rapidly in our industry. It’s not a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of situation. It’s an ongoing process.” That’s why Clayton Financial Group makes sure to check in with clients at regular intervals, after an initial plan has been set. “Depending on the complexity of the relationship, we meet with clients anywhere from biannually to annually,” notes Michalak. Advisors will even consult with clients quarterly or monthly, if necessary. It’s that kind of personalized attention that distinguishes Clayton Financial Group from other area wealth management advisors. “We offer a customized, boutique approach to individual financial needs,” declares Michalak.

Windows & Doors MOSBY BUILDING ARTS – EXTERIORS BY MOSBY

Built to Last By Amanda Dahl

E

xteriors by Mosby, a division of Mosby Building Arts, understands the true value of curb appeal and how important the façade of a home can be to its residents’ lifestyles. “Clients come to us for excellent customer service,” Ken Ware, the Exteriors business manager, says. “We have a tremendous brand and reputation in the remodeling market. From the first moment a client calls all the way through the completion of their project, we provide a high level of customer [care]. It’s a big part of what we do.” That emphasis on client interaction shows during production, as each need is assessed and executed with expert-level skills. “The Exteriors division mainly handles exterior remodeling of residential homes,” Ware explains. “That includes windows and doors, and siding or roofing replacement. It can also be gutters and downspouts, accents or structural components.” The team at Exteriors by Mosby recognizes that their impressive skills require work. “We do a lot of training here at Mosby,” Ware comments. “We bring in product manufacturers, like Pella Windows, on a yearly basis to train us. We also send [employees] to installation training. We’re always trying to keep up to speed on products and [processes].” Exteriors by Mosby operates according to three important standards: “Client experience, high-quality products and excellent craftsmanship,” Ware says. This solid foundation ensures your window and door installations are built to last.

Style Speak

Claire Flowers By Julia Cain

‌Known for her comfortable yet stylish stilettos, St. Louisbased fashion designer Claire Flowers is expanding her brand and her collection to include a closet full of new items. LN recently caught up with Flowers to find out about her inspiration, new pieces and product availability. You launched your line of stylish, comfortable heels several years ago. How did you transition into apparel and other accessories? I am still in transition, but it has been much easier than I anticipated. I came across this amazing organization called Maison La Lou. They help St. Louis-based designers engage with LA cut-and-sew companies, notions companies, tech-pack creators, pattern makers, etc., without the designer having to travel back and forth – and without being an expert on all things apparel. They are my trusted source throughout this process and have undoubtedly saved me tons of money in travel and by helping me to avoid costly mistakes. What was the inspiration behind the new apparel collection? I tend to like easy clothing – things that travel well and are machine washable. My taste and that of my customers is timeless classic. I actually found much of the inspiration from painted glass tiles in Tulum, Mexico, so a lot of the linings, interior pockets and colors came directly from the tiles. I also went back to timeless, easy silhouettes because, again, that is what my customer wants. It’s an easy-to-wear line with elements of details that are colorful and whimsical. What kind of items will be available, and how can consumers find them? There are 14 garments total: several tops, pants, dresses, a swing coat, silk scarves and skirts. All garments range from extra-small to extra-large. Everything has a bit of stretch in it so we didn’t need to size 0 to 16. I am having a private, soft launch on July 19 and then a public launch on Aug. 16 at The Diamond Family store on Manchester at 6 p.m. I will also be debuting my 2019 shoe styles on Aug. 16. After the events, my showrooms in Dallas and Atlanta will represent my line across 14 states. I am unsure which stores will pick up my line, but I am confident that most stores carrying my shoes will also carry my apparel. I also hope to be picked up in a few stores in St. Louis. Of course, everything will be available online at claireflowers.com beginning in mid-July. Will you continue to grow the shoe line, or is apparel your new focus?

I will go where the money is. Am I not supposed to say that as a designer? I will sell whatever my customers want, and they will vote with dollars. What can readers look out for next? Handbags are next. They are in development now, and they are close to going to market. They are functional bags that make travel a breeze but still look sophisticated. It’s a hands-free bag that allows you to ditch the wallet. I hate wallets. They slow me down. What has the response been like to your growing collection over the years?

I have a very loyal customer base who get excited at anything new, so I am pleased to have more to offer them. I can’t say that I have totally whiffed yet with any particular style, but I have not designed anything too crazy either. I just designed an ice cream cone-inspired pump with colorful mink fur balls to represent the ice cream, so we will see how this goes. It might be a swing and a miss.

Personalizing g

e l Sty By Brittany Nay

S

t. Louisan Annie Heyward, owner and head stylist of her eponymous company, says what we wear tells the world who we are, as each person’s unique lifestyle is reflected through fashion. When styling clothing and accessories, some people gravitate toward a particular style, while others need help identifying their personal brand, notes Heyward, who holds a fashion merchandising degree from the University of Georgia and has worked with notable couture designers Oscar de La Renta, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang and Bagdley Mischka. “I help guide [clients] through this process, sourcing designs and pieces that are indicative of who that person is and a reflection of [his or her] personality, lifestyle and best self,” she says. “Fashion has the ability to tell our story, so our choices reflect what

76 22, 2018 | LadueNews.com 76   June june 22, 2018 | LadueNews.com

we want to say and how we want to be perceived.” As Heyward personally styles clients, she first has a meeting to develop a rapport, ask questions and identify needs. “We conduct an ‘edit’ with the client, going through every aspect of [his or her] wardrobe, consolidating and pruning, and examining potential holes and necessary updates,” she says. Heyward’s team can handle everything from shopping to tailoring, delivering clothing to the client’s home for selections of everyday seasonal clothing to ensembles for special events, arranging alterations appointments as needed. In addition, every client is provided with a styled “lookbook,” featuring photographs of each head-to-toe ensemble. “This takes all the guesswork and stress out of getting dressed in the morning,” Heyward says. Throughout the shopping and styling process, Heyward’s team considers the client’s age, body

shape and size. “I help guide clients into figureflattering styles, colors and silhouettes that best reflect who they are,” she says, adding that “not every trend is for every body.” St. Louis personal stylist Angela Moore leads clients to their specific style by identifying their “season in life.” She says: “Stay-at-home mom? Let’s find a better ‘uniform’ than the T-shirt and yoga pants combo. Lost some weight? Let’s celebrate by going out and finding items that fit your new body!” Moore loves that clothing gives people a platform for creativity. “I try to make sure the clothing I pull represents how that person wants to be portrayed,” she says. “I love pulling bold jewelry for women who prefer to dress in darker neutrals but still want a pop of color that’s not overwhelming or trying out a fun print on a client who wants to incorporate some whimsy into her style. Fashion is meant to be fun –

[it’s] not a formula to be followed.” Moore connects with clients and their fashion goals through a questionnaire and an in-person meeting, then performs a “sort” of their closet. “We’ll go through their clothing and put together new looks with items they already own and discuss anything that might be missing,” she says. “I’ll also have them get rid of items that are old, torn [or] don’t fit.” Next, Moore has a shopping session with the client. “I’ll usually prepull [clothing and accessories] at three stores at the mall or different area boutiques so the only thing a client needs to worry about is showing up and trying on items,” she says, adding that she then creates a digital lookbook with outfit combinations for reference. Dacy Gillespie, a St. Louis personal stylist and owner of the personal styling business Mindful Closet, asks each client to complete a questionnaire and create a Pinterest board to get a sense of his or her style. “I [get] to know each client and [his or her] lifestyle and how that relates to wardrobe needs,” she says. Then Gillespie works to clear the client’s closet of anything that doesn’t represent his or her personal story. When shopping, she ensures any purchase fits that narrative. “If they don’t feel a connection with a piece or don’t feel good in it, it’s a wasted purchase because they won’t wear it,” she says. Gillespie makes note of missing pieces in their wardrobe and creates a customized shopping list. “I take clients’ measurements, personal style [preferences] and customized shopping list and preshop for them,” Gillespie says. “I prep dressing rooms in four or five stores with pieces selected specifically for them and their style.” Finally, Gillespie plans the client’s outfits, combining the current and new wardrobe items. Quality over quantity should be practiced in fashion, Gillespie notes. “Stop keeping or buying things for ‘what if’ scenarios,” she says. “Remember that manufacturers are making pieces to fit the most common shapes, and each body is individual and unique, so it’s unrealistic to expect to find things that fit perfectly, and tailoring is the solution.” Above all, local personal stylists say fashion is about empowerment. “We empower clients, help them feel confident in their clothes and, by extension, their skin,” Heyward says. “There is nothing more gratifying than seeing clients smile and hold their heads high because they know they look incredible.” Annie Heyward, annieheyward.com Mindful Closet, mindfulcloset.com Angela Moore, angelamoorepersonalstyling.com LadueNews.com | June 22, 2018   77

Mastering Millennials

A

I couldn’t help chuckling on detecting his not-so-subtle underlying question: “Who do you millennials think you are?” As he resumed sipping his coffee, it soon became clear why millennials are characterized as entitled. The consensus of frustration seems to come from millennials’ failure to accept the status quo; instead of joining the workforce and accepting what’s deemed professional and standard, millennials are demanding change. Although millennials have much to learn and most are eager to do so, to facilitate that learning, our older co-workers, managers and companies must change, too. Why? Because millennials are more likely to quit their jobs in protest of and frustration with their vocational environment. In a survey of perceptions of employment opportunities conducted by the Job Application Center, 41 percent of millennials indicated they expect to be in their current job for less than two years. According to Gallup studies, 21 percent of millennials have changed jobs within the past year, three times that of non-millennials. Such studies also indicate that millennial turnover costs the domestic economy $30.5 billion annually. A Merrill Lynch study predicts these job-jumping millennials will make up 46 percent of the workforce by 2020. And that’s why companies

must adapt to the generational change. The good news? Adapting isn’t as hard as it may seem. Business owners and managers oughtn’t believe the snark that accommodating millennials demands remodeling the office and taking out a small loan for endless snacks. Retaining millennial talent starts with understanding millennials – why they do what they do and what motivates them. Once that happens, business leaders can begin to strategically align their operations not only to attract high-performing millennials but also to retain them.

general negative connotation surrounds the topic of millennials. Whether it be the stereotype of being entitled, lazy and narcissistic or their propensity for quitting jobs, millennials have become a prevalent topic – rightfully so, with their being the largest generation in the nation’s workforce. (According to the Pew Research Center, in 2017 millennials made up 35 percent of American workers.) While various generations have more commonalities than we might think, our differences cause conflict, like differences in upbringing, technology, culture and economy. Baby boomers and members of Generation X commonly complain, “I just don’t understand millennials.” Recently a business owner at a coffee shop discussed millennials with me. He shared his biggest issue: He couldn’t get them motivated to work. As I shared contrasting insights, his face and entire demeanor changed when I said older generations must change how they engage millennials. We starred at each other for a second before he put his coffee down and made this retort: “That’s interesting that you said we have to change. Don’t you mean they have to change?”

Keepsake Issues

W

e all talk to ourselves, sometimes even out loud, and especially when an issue is important. Studies consistently show that three life changes that may most seriously affect one’s emotional state are the death of a loved one, divorce and moving from a home where one has lived for a long time. Each can prompt vital discussions with oneself. Selling one’s house is hard, forcing us, in many cases, to confront decluttering and downsizing. The former, some real estate agents practically order by rote, going from room to room saying, “This has to go. That can’t stay there. Change out that carpet.” (This actually happened to me when my husband and I put our house of 28 years on the market last month.) After picking up oneself from feeling like an intern to Meryl Streep’s Devil Wears Prada character, one faces the even tougher job of throwing stuff out; except to oneself, it’s not just stuff. Downsizing requires letting go of part of one’s personal history, forcing one to constantly ask oneself, “Is this part of my life worth keeping, and if so, how much of it?” It basically divides the

The more emotional one is, the longer the process takes because every little memory can come flooding back. For example, I found our son’s fifth grade English paper – his first “A.” He and I had struggled through “learning style differences” diagnosed when he was in third grade, then tutors, then working together on homework every night and weekend. The word because was becuz for three years – then he finally got it. Today, at 35, he is in his office as a pricing executive at Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Can I throw that out? No way. But I also have to ask myself, what will I ever do with it? And if I keep this one, am I starting a snowball

effect that will continue until I’m on my 10th box, including his final 36-page treatise for his MBA? Good thing my husband and I had only one child, rather than three or four, or I’d be paying a storage unit rental bill rivaling our food budget! Keepsakes can enhance a new life or keep it focused on the past. The combination will be unique for each of us and, I am finding, certainly complex. On the one hand, one would like to be remembered positively by what is saved, yet not be perceived as a pack rat. On the other hand, gone is gone forever. I decided to keep that fifth grade paper. Someday, far off, when our son discovers it among our things, he’ll remember the struggle on his own. But realizing I kept it? In my mind, there should always be room in the box for that.

laze Pizza – a pizzeria chain backed by NBA star LeBron James, which made its Missouri debut, in Kirkwood, in March – serves signature pies cooked to order in just 3 minutes in an open-flame oven. Chris McDonald serves as director of operations for the franchise group that owns the rights to the brand in Missouri and Kansas; he mentions the existence of more than 260 locations of the rapidly growing fastcasual chain, which started in Pasadena, California, six years back. (McDonald oversees locations in Wichita and Oleatha, Kansas, with his group soon planning to open three more in Missouri.) “We like to say that we are changing the way people

think about and eat pizza,” McDonald says. “By that, what we mean is that we’re fast enough for lunch with great ingredients that are totally customizable. Our dough is made in-house fresh every day, and all of our ingredients are clean, which means there are no artificial colorings, flavorings or preservatives.” Blaze Pizza fills a 2,600-square-foot space, with 65 seats in its dining room. The industrial aesthetic features exposed ceilings and orange highlights throughout the room to mimic the brand’s namesake flame. At the counter, employees guide guests through ordering and assemble pies before their eyes on the line. Pizzas are built on a thin crust with a crisp bottom and a bit of a chew. The “BBQ Chkn” comes with grilled chicken, mozzarella, red onion, banana peppers, Gorgonzola and a barbecue sauce drizzle. Blaze Pizza, 1050 S. Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood,

‌Story:  Michael and Agnes settle into their home after their wedding in 1895. Although uncertain about their future, they remain convinced their love will see them through rough spots, as well as serve as the rock on which their long-time happiness prospers. During the next 50 years, the couple welcomes two children, weather an affair and questions about their love, and watch their son and daughter grow up and move away from home, leaving them empty nesters. Along the way, Michael succeeds as a novelist, while Agnes yearns for more fulfillment than keeping house (with servants, at that). Can those wedding vows they took as an idealistic young pair survive the harsh and often monotonous realities of everyday life? Highlights:  STAGES St. Louis returns to a show performed in its very first year of existence (1987) by showcasing two different casts in this two-character musical written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones of The Fantasticks fame. Other Info:  To help enliven this curio piece of a musical, STAGES utilizes alternating couples termed the “purple cast” and “red cast.” Steve Isom and Corinne Melançon form the “purple cast,” while David Schmittou and Kari Ely make up the “red cast.” The alternating approach to casting allows audiences to compare, if they’d like, the performances of each duo while re-enacting this modest musical based on the play The Fourposter by Jan de Hartog. All of the action takes place on a single set, the bedroom of Michael and Agnes, which features a four-poster bed at its center. As its primary problem, I Do! I Do! too often comes across as stale and sadly dated. Director Michael Hamilton smartly attempts to work around this challenge by infusing the STAGES production with four of its most accomplished performers, which works well enough – to a point. In fact, STAGES’ version of I Do! I Do! is the best I’ve ever seen of a musical that nonetheless just seems tired too much of the time. Tom Jones’ story stretches credulity at several points. Agnes forgives Michael’s infidelity within the confines of two closely bridged songs, “A Well-Known Fact” and “Flaming Agnes,” in Act I, while in Act II, Agnes’ serious reflection about her own self-identity and lack of love for her husband begins and ends ever so quickly in “What Is a Woman?,” albeit with Michael’s committed love to her helping cross those troubled waters. I Do! I Do! seems too often quaint and alien, even considering its setting in the late 19th and early to mid-20th centuries. From the “purple cast,” Isom does a lot with a little in the role of Michael, cultivating laughs from the slender material with his physical humor, as well as

By Mark Bretz

underscoring Michael’s penchant for self-importance when conversing with Melançon as Agnes. From the “red cast,” meanwhile, Schmittou’s interpretation makes Michael less ostentatious, but not really as humorous. Both portrayals bring something positive to the role, albeit in different fashions, which doubtless was the hoped-for result. Similarly, Melançon and Ely offer two subtly varied interpretations of the antiquated character of Agnes. Ely finds considerable humor in the part while bringing the romantic elements of her role to the fore when the opportunity presents itself, while Melançon works to show Agnes’ occasionally defiant spirit. All four performers were featured in STAGES’ hilarious rendition of The Drowsy Chaperone in 2016 and in High Society in 2000, as well as countless shows on their own throughout STAGES’ history. Here they share a wistful view of marriage as it may or may not have been like a century or more ago.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW…

By Stanley Browne

‌2017 JORCHE ANTICA MASSERIA, DIPINTA ROSATO – PUGLIA, ITALY Grape: 100% Negroamaro Del Salento Owner/Winemaker: Dalila and Emanuela Gianfreda, Giovanni Aged: 3 months in bottle Approximate Retail Price: $15 TASTING NOTES: Color: Medium salmon with pink and orange highlights Aroma: Rich in fruits like strawberry and wild mulberry, followed by floral notes of white rose petal and lilac Taste: Excellent balanced fruit dancing on the tongue with a dry, lingering finish and tangy acidity

I

n southernmost Italy, just inside its own bootheel and minutes from the Ionian Sea, lies the winery of Jorche, known internationally for its rich, spicy primativo and negroamaro reds. The Jorche Dipinta rosato – many Italians prefer to use this word, saving the term rosé for sparkling wine – ranks less as a labor of love than as an out-and-out artistic creation. Winemakers Emanuela Gianfreda and her sister, Dalila, deliberated for years about how to approach their rosato. They wanted to produce a lighter, more feminine style in contrast to the typical rosatos of the Salento region, which are usually darker with much bigger fruit. The pair decided to use a more vin gris style, offering little to no maceration (extended contact with the skin). They continued to use the traditional grape used for rosato in the region, negroamaro. Doing so resulted in a lighter, more elegant expression. The Dipinta makes a passionate artistic endeavor for Emanuela Gianfreda, who also paints – so what better way to present the wine than to have her paint its label? Every vintage will bear a new painting by her, inspired by the wine itself. Moreover, the wine’s name itself, Dipinta, carries a double meaning. In Italian, painting translates to dipinto, a masculine word – so the two sisters decided to change the word to a feminine and use that for the name of their creation. Dipinta also forms an acronym for them: donne insieme per il nostro territorio Apulia. Roughly translating to women together for our Puglia, it signifies for them immense pride, as women, in the history, traditions and winemaking of their region. Not only does Jorche sport a fantastic winery, but also it boasts their Masseria, a 16th-century building providing lodging and a restaurant – a perfect place in the one of the best parts of Italy to vacation, relax and take in the nation’s beauty. So raise a glass to the fifth generation of the family behind the Jorche winery, sisters Dalila and Emanuela Gianfreda. Cheers! Food Pairings: This elegant rosato pairs well with fresh seafood and seafood pasta dishes. It also goes well with a nice, light bowl of fruit, mild cheeses or maybe even just the sunshine in which you’re now basking.

Max & Louie Productions presents END OF THE RAINBOW at The Grandel. In the Broadway smash hit, it’s 1968 and Judy Garland is about to make her comeback … again. In a London hotel room, with both her new young fiancé and her adoring accompanist, Garland struggles to get “beyond the rainbow” with her signature cocktail of talent, tenacity and razor-sharp wit. Featuring some of Garland’s most memorable songs, this savagely funny play-with-music offers unique insight into the inner conflict that inspired and consumed one of the most beloved figures of our time. This St. Louis premiere stars Angela Ingersoll, reprising her star turn as Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow, having garnered the Chicago Jeff Award for her stunning portrayal of Garland at Porchlight Music Theatre Chicago and recently, to great acclaim, at Los Angeles’ La Mirada Theatre. Tickets start at $20. Times vary. maxandlouie.com.

Sat., June 30

ESC Tours presents VINCENT PRICE IN ST. LOUIS: A DAY WITH VICTORIA PRICE. The day, a salute to the cinematic native St. Louisan, begins at 9:30 a.m. with a private tour of the new Muny exhibition at the Missouri History Museum. Afterward, the tour leaves for a van trip to see St. Louis landmarks of Price’s youth. The tour takes attendees to Blueberry Hill, the St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Saint Louis Art Museum and Schlafly Bottleworks for a viewing of The Pit and the Pendulum. $110. 9:30 a.m. eventbrite.com.

Sat., June 23

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis presents LA TRAVIATA at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts. In this performance, Violetta has one important rule: never fall in love. As a Parisian courtesan, her life is full of parties, admirers and – most important – freedom. Then she meets Alfredo. His naive sincerity sweeps her off her feet. Just when Violetta thinks she has escaped her past, she is asked to make an unthinkable sacrifice. Will pride, love or honor prevail? Embrace the romance of this Verdi masterpiece, featuring the directing debut of star soprano Patricia Racette. Tickets start at $55. 8 p.m. opera-stl.org.

Fri., June 22, to Fri., July 27

William Shearburn Gallery presents “DETAILS: UTILITARIAN ABSTRACTION,” an exhibition of works by Dean Kessmann, opening June 22 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition explores the materiality of mass-produced products and consumer culture through the re-presentation and re-contextualization of printing marks on the packaging of household consumer products. The conceptual process results in beautiful large-format abstract prints. As a subset of “Utilitarian Abstraction,” the words in the exhibition re-appropriate and further magnify these already appropriated images. As the integrity of the original printer marks breaks down through re-imaging, Kessmann’s artistic control and conceptual underpinning grow. The gallery is open 12 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. Free. shearburngallery.com.

Mightier SWORD Than the

By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Pen photos from David Oscarson

98   June 22, 2018 | LadueNews.com

A metro area group has dotted its i’s and crossed its t’s in staging an ambitious salute to that humblest of writing devices, the pen.

O

nce upon a time, before being “all thumbs” suggested a mastery of messaging and a tablet involved not pixels but paper, writing as a mode of communication relied on a common implement being celebrated at a three-day convention starting here next Friday. The inaugural St. Louis Pen Show runs from June 29 to July 1 at Maryland Heights’ Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel. Admission to the convention, whose hours vary from day to day, costs $5 for a single day and $10 for a three-day pass, with children under 12 admitted free. A press release for the convention mentions “150 tables reserved by 85 vendors from all over the U.S.,” including Wildwood resident David Oscarson, in addition to a waiting list – always a good sign – and “traders joining us from around the world.” The convention includes purveyors of both modern and vintage pens, artisans, manufacturers, repair professionals and (delightfully) nib grinders. Among its activities and attractions, the convention also features a scavenger hunt for youngsters, a grand door prize and an auction. “The Pen Artisan Guild will be conducting a contest to celebrate the wonderful designs and craftsmanship of artisan pen makers,” the event’s website moreover relates, and the convention offers numerous classes on pens, inks and manifold other topics, among them The History of Pelikan Pens Up to World War II and Taking Images of Your Collection for Selling, Posterity & Insurance. Organizing and directing the convention are Dave and Anne Morgan. For many local pen devotees like that husbandand-wife team, the St. Louis metro area’s betwixt-and-between locale has long posed a problem. “Many East Coast vendors never venture west of the Mississippi, and West Coast vendors don’t go farther east,” Anne Morgan remarks, alluding to pen conventions held in such metropolises as Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Over time, though, that problem transformed into its own solution, as the couple and certain of their compatriots realized a Midwestern pen convention – one situated, say, in the Gateway City – would allow devotees from coast to coast to assemble without overextending anyone’s budget. As a result, at a March 2017 show in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Morgans and two other devotees determined to take the initiative on a local convention. Beyond celebrating the pen, the local convention’s mission involves other objectives, according to the press release: “to promote cursive handwriting and an appreciation for the use of writing instruments, while highlighting St. Louis in a positive light. All profits go toward teaching cursive,” through both workshops at the convention and, potentially, subsequent workshops in area school districts and at The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum. Dave Morgan succinctly explains that objective: “About the same time [as the Little Rock show], we became aware that cursive writing was no longer being taught on a regular basis, and children – and quite a few adults – are not able to read cursive writing. …” Calling writing by hand “a personal, spontaneous experience,” he expands on that explanation: “Studies have

shown it helps exercise both the analytical and artistic sides of the brain. By learning cursive, children develop fine motor skills, setting the foundation for artistic writing and the ability to read the cursive writing of the past. … “Some universities are no longer allowing computers in their lecture halls, and students are having a hard time taking notes by printing. The flowing motion of cursive is much quicker. Will future writers use quick printing or write ‘LOL’ or use only emojis, reverting to the caveman era?” Preparing for the convention also entailed considerable research, they add. “We decided the best way to recruit vendors was to visit other shows around the country and listen to vendors’ needs and desires,” Anne Morgan says. “We have visited 12 of the 16 national venues and two European pen shows.” By last June, the Morgans say, the convention already had scheduled all tables in one Sheraton ballroom and renegotiated with the hotel to add a second ballroom and hallways. By January, both formal and informal promotional efforts nationwide began to accelerate as much as feasible for a low-budget nonprofit. Despite any preshow frenzy, though, the Morgans still extoll the pleasures of pens, citing the serenity of flowing ink, the tactility of a nib gliding across paper and other Photo courtesy felicities. They also share details about of Five Star Pens their own personal favorites. “At shows, I like to play with the different inks and diluting the colors,” Anne Morgan confesses, perhaps including such vibrantly named industry standards as Parker’s Quink, Pilot Corp. of America’s Iroshizuku, Wancher’s Silk Road and Sheaffer Pen & Art Supply’s Skrip. “For pens, I usually use a ballpoint unless addressing special invitations.” Her husband, meanwhile, cites as a favorite the “Pilot Vanishing Point, which ironically operates like a classic ballpoint pen – the nib retracts inside the barrel of the pen casing. Other favorite pens are the LAMY Safari and Pilot Metropolitans.” Finally, given the ubiquity of Paper Mate and similar, cheaper pens, the Morgans also reflect on when they themselves came to cherish higher-end instruments. “I developed an appreciation during a college calligraphy class and throughout my engineering career,” Dave Morgan says. “Fountain pen nibs, filling systems and design have been a curiosity, and I’ve always enjoyed precision writing instruments that weren’t disposable.” For her part, Anne Morgan recalls her own appreciation began when she majored in art in college. “I enjoyed the movement of the pen on paper and the look of the letters,” she says. “With some practice, calligraphy becomes second nature, and you use it without thinking. “In recent years, I’ve come to truly appreciate the workmanship and design qualities, as well as the materials, used in making the new, modern pens. I can spend hours just looking at the new pen designs and marveling at the workmanship. I can understand why people collect them as pieces of artwork.” St. Louis Pen Show, 636-227-8943, stlpenshow.com Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel, 900 Westport Plaza, St. Louis, 314-878-1500, sheratonwestport.com
