OVER THE YEARS, MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY to explore “from sea to shining sea.” And while we love to discover new places when we travel, there has been a city or two that left us with such an impression and a longing to return—again and again. One such place is Savannah…hauntingly beautiful is the way I would describe this Southern gem. Savannah’s mystique is palpable—you can feel it as you walk along the cobblestone streets and the famed city squares. Even the majestic oak trees, with curtains of Spanish moss hanging from their enormous branches, seem to hold centuries of secrets. With an aura that evokes its Colonial past, it’s no surprise that Savannah also is considered by many to be America’s most haunted city. In this issue, our travel contributor Judy Crowell seeks some answers. Read about her adventure beginning on p. 62.

A NEW TAKE ON TUDOR When Carolyn Grove of C. V. Grove Interiors looks at a project, she sees potential that few interior designers have the gift to see. She recently was asked by a longtime client to ‘freshen up’ the home that she had done for them 15 years ago. “My client loves color,’” Grove emphatically states, which is obvious to the visitor upon entering the foyer.

Contr ibu tor s Diane Anderson Anderson has lived in St. Louis all her life and has always had an interest in photography. “I am so fortunate that I am able to do what I love.” She says the town’s bestkept secret is the number of truly talented musicians who practice their craft here. “I am very proud to call St. Louis my hometown!”
Maryville Talks Books lectures are free and open to the public. Seating is first come first served.
Mark Bretz Bretz has written about theater and performance arts for more than 35 years. “The best-kept secret in St. Louis? For many people, that would be both the quality and quantity of fine theatrical productions beyond the ‘traditional’ venues. Excellent theater is not confined to large houses.”
Fall 2012 Lecture, Q&A and Book Signing Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Left Bank Books.

Judith Crowell
Eric Greitens
Crowell is a native St. Louisan who, when not traveling, divides her time between St. Louis and Santa Barbara. She loves exploring ‘the road less traveled.’ “Our best-kept secrets are our beautiful springs and falls and places like the country roads of West County, Lone Elk Park, Tower Grove Park and Grant’s Farm.”

Cancer Support Community
CELEBRATION OF HOPE
C
OMEDIAN Kevin Nealon entertained the crowd at the signature fundraising gala for Cancer Support Community at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. The SNL alum’s unique sense of humor and profound dry wit was a hit with the audience. The evening started with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by dinner and award presentations. Cancer Support Community presented its prestigious Marsha Wolff and Tina Borchert Inspiration Award to Bill and Amy Koman and to corporate honoree, Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC, with CEO Danny Ludeman accepting. Carol and Tom Voss were event chairs and Joan Quicksilver was event vice-chair.

She is currently working on a line of jewelry titled ‘Bollywood.’… Katie and Steve Schankman recently threw a birthday party for their 1-year-old Cavalier King Charles Puppy. When RALPH CLAYTON and his neighbors donated 104 acres of farmland to build a courthouse and county seat more than 130 years ago, they had no inkling that the rural outpost would evolve as a progressive metropolitan hub in the century to come. A newly released book, Clayton, Missouri: An Urban Story, chronicles the making of the city through the people who helped build the community. Written by veteran journalist MARY DELACH LEONARD, the book is filled with historical anecdotes, nostalgic photographs and modern street scenes. The book is available online through reedypress.com and at several local bookstores.
Kudos to Crossroads College Prep sophomore MATTHEW LARSON: The chess standout is now among the top 1 percent of junior chess players in the U.S., and among the top 5 percent of all players in Missouri. Matthew recently played in the 2012 Missouri Open Chess Championship, where he tied for first with two grandmasters from Webster University. Matthew, the captain of the Crossroads chess team, has been playing chess since his elementary school days at New City School. Checkmate, indeed.

LIV ING MARI DE VILLA
More to Come AT MARI DE VILLA, GUESTS ARE ALWAYS excitedly asking, What’s next?, says president Fred Wiesehan. The senior living community is in the midst of a five-year construction project, to be completed in 2014, that is geared toward amenities for the ever-changing senior lifestyle. “Guests have embraced the changes, and they get excited every time there is new construction.” Recent renovation projects have further beautified the campus—from new entrances, balconies, terraces and gardens to a remodeled beauty salon, whirlpool and spa. And with plenty more space to expand on the 21-acre property in Town & Country, Wiesehan says improvements will continue. “That could entail larger living accommodations, more flexibility in interior designs and cosmetic changes guests would like to see.”
In addition, an expansion may be coming for Mari de Villa’s theater, which hosts guest speakers and other entertainment for residents. Currently, Mari de Villa offers private rooms in assisted living and skilled nursing, as well as independent living. Guests can make the home their own by adding decorations, painting or bringing in favorite furnishings. Wiesehan and his wife, Mary Kay, who serves as Mari de Villa VP, listen to what guests would like to see in their private rooms and villas, as well as throughout the campus. The couple, along with the other owners, lives on the property. “It’s not just a home, it’s their home — and it’s our home, too,” he notes. The Mari de Villa mission, which began with its opening 52 years ago, still holds true today,
Mary Kay and Fred Wiesehan
Wiesehan adds. “The No. 1 thing we’re here for is to provide the very best care we can to our guests, and we still offer some of the most affordable rates in St. Louis.” As the senior living community expands for the future, Wiesehan is happy about its history and eagerly anticipates what’s coming. “It’s exciting for the management, and it’s exciting for our guests—they like to see the positive changes that are coming together.”

makeovers, which often involve a body lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast lift and augmentation. While post-pregnancy is a common time for cosmetic procedures, others question the right age to have certain surgeries. With decades of expertise and cutting-edge technology, St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery can help patients with everything from finding the right type of procedure to choosing the proper age for an operation. “When it bothers you, it is time to get it taken care of,” says Dr. Bruce White. Established almost 40 years ago, St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery offers a full range of cosmetic procedures, including facelifts, tummy tucks, body lifts, post-weight-loss skin-tightening, hair transplants and the two most commonly performed surgeries: breast augmentation and liposuction. For patients considering cosmetic surgery, White recommends doing your homework. “The more knowledge the patient brings to the consultation, the better,” he notes. “They should know what they want, investigate the reputation of the plastic surgeon, and see two or three surgeons to get an idea of who they like working with.” For breast enhancements, White says patients should communicate what shape and size they want. At St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, a new 3-D imaging machine can digitally show the patient and their

doctor what different surgical outcomes will look like. Improved technology also has helped shorten the patient’s recovery time for breast procedures to four to seven days, while liposuction typically takes two to seven days of recuperation time. White notes that liposuction is not a quick weight-loss remedy, but a contouring technique. Although, depending on your body type, some may appear to have lost 10 pounds when they actually dropped three, he says. Botox is another popular procedure. Since it is non-surgical, White says it can be quickly and easily completed during a break in a patient’s work day. While middle-aged women are common Botox patients, adults can opt for the procedure at any age, he adds. Though cosmetic solutions can produce positive results, White notes that plastic surgery should not replace a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritious diet and regular exercise.
All-Over Body Transformations
Feel Confident
Self-Confidence and
satisfaction
Whether you want a subtle change that helps hide your age or a more dramatic transformation, there’s a cosmetic procedure for you. “Cosmetic surgery can provide a patient with several options to help improve their confidence and self-esteem,” says Dr. Christian Prada of St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery. “Many patients have had changes from the effects of aging, pregnancy, weight fluctuations and sun damage, and are looking for a way to look closer to their younger self. Other patients may never have had the body they wanted and are looking to improve their self-confidence.” Virtually any part of the body can be cosmetically enhanced. Prada says the most common procedures include liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), eyelid lifts, breast implants and tummy tucks. These surgical procedures vary in cost, recovery and results, but with a bit of patience, most people will see a notable post-surgical change. “Within a week or two, most patients can appreciate a dramatic improvement in the way they look,” Prada says. “There still may be swelling and bruising to the areas addressed, but this will go away within a few weeks. For almost all procedures, a few months may be required to see the ‘final’ result.” Patients tell Prada they’re happy after surgery, yet he cites even broader evidence of satisfaction. “Studies have shown satisfaction rates of 85 to 95 percent after various cosmetic surgeries.” Surgery offers the most permanent transformations, but med spas continue to gain popularity for treatments that require less downtime, and new technology and techniques provide ongoing improvements. For instance, Synergi MedSpa now offers Venus Freeze, which uses both radio frequency and electromagnetic waves to tighten and tone the skin, while reducing cellulite and fat deposits, explains Dr. Richard Maack, medical director. The popular new treatment can be used on the face, neck and body, he says, adding that the painless procedure offers the best results after several treatments. When plumping, rather than reducing, is the goal, “without question, injectable fillers are the single best med spa treatment to instantly and remarkably rejuvenate the face,” says Dr. Mike Nayak of Nayak Plastic Surgery and Avani Day Spa. “The best results are not from filling lines or folds, but from restoring the eye, temple, cheek and jawline areas.” Results last about a year, he adds. No matter which procedure you opt for, Nayak emphasizes, “Make sure to have your treatment at a facility where a competent physician evaluates each patient. This helps ensure that patients, procedures and expectations are all in line to optimize results.”

Hair-say ALTHOUGH CELEBRITIES LIKE BRUCE WILLIS, PATRICK Stewart and Sean Connery may be rocking the bald look, not everyone is at ease with a visible scalp. Yet genetics, illness, stress and drug side-effects may cause significant hair loss in men and women, whether you like it or not. “The most common cause of hair loss is male-pattern baldness caused by the effects of a hormone (DHT) on the follicles. It causes a process of miniaturization whereby the follicle gets finer and finer until it eventually disappears,” says Dr. Richard Moore, medical director of The Lifestyle Center. He adds that men are not the only ones affected by this form of hair loss. “It’s estimated that more than 20 million women suffer from the same condition. There are a number of other causes of hair loss, including traction alopecia (pulling of the hair), thyroid disorders, medication-induced and a few autoimmune causes.” Regardless of cause, people who want to slow hair loss or regain a full head of hair have several options that go far beyond the ‘plug

transplants’ of the past. One of the most common and simplest alternatives is the use of over-the-counter Rogaine or prescription Propecia. Rogaine is a topical medication applied directly to the scalp, while Propecia is taken orally. Both medicines may have some side-effects and are not a solution for everyone. Other products for thickening hair and encouraging new growth exist, although Rogaine and Propecia are the only medications for hair loss currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. More involved solutions range from special ‘laser caps’ worn at home, to surgical hair transplantation. The best course of action involves analysis of the root—of the problem, that is. Lilibet Iken, a nurse and owner of be Salon, begins by examining the hair follicles under a powerful magnifying scope. “You’re looking for the viability of the hair follicle,” she says. Iken also inquires about the client’s medical conditions, medications and family history. If Iken finds that hair continues to grow from the follicles but is thinner than it used to be, the client may be a candidate for cold laser hair restoration. “The cold lasers take thinning hair and thicken it up,” she says. This is accomplished by increasing blood flow to the follicle, resulting in thicker, fuller hair. Those who have thick existing hair shafts, but hair that no longer grows from all the follicles, need to consider other options, such as hair transplantation. “We perform a procedure to restore hair with the NeoGraft device,” Moore says. “This harvests individual follicles from the back of the head, which are then re-implanted into the areas of hair loss. These hairs are resistant to the effects of DHT and therefore more permanent.” Comparing this technique to traditional hair transplants, Moore explains, “The process differs from the more traditional hair restoration process where a strip of skin is removed and the skin is pulled back together and sutured or stapled, resulting in a linear scar across the back of the head. Since we are removing individual follicles, rather than the strip of skin, healing is much faster with less pain and discomfort.” If none of these options appeals to you, modern ‘hair systems’ go far beyond the bad rug appearance of the toupees of yesteryear. Custom-made for the client, hair systems are now designed to be worn continuously for several weeks and treated exactly as natural hair. People who wear hair systems wash, dry and style the hair just as they would before, seeing specially trained technicians for removal and reapplication. “Now the base of the hair system—what the actual hair is attached to—is so thin, it breathes,” Iken says. “It’s much more livable; it’s not like a bad wig. When somebody tips their head down, you can actually see their scalp and it looks like hair growing out of their head.” So if the bald look just isn’t for you, take heart. No one needs to know that your hair was ever thin.
IF THE BALD LOOK JUST ISN’T FOR YOU, TAKE HEART. NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW THAT YOUR HAIR WAS EVER THIN.

New Medicine Based On An 88-Year Old Theory By Albert Einstein Can Help Almost Everyone Who Is Sick Or Injured!
W why.
hat you are about to read may be the most important information you’ve ever read. Here is
Albert Einstein was, quite possibly, the most intelligent person who ever lived. His theories and ideas were so far ahead of his time, that even now, the smartest scientists alive are still discovering his value. One of his theories published in 1917, worked out the theory of how lasers function. However, it was not until May 16, 1960 (43 years later) that the first actual laser was developed by an American scientist. Since then, scientists and inventors have developed many types of lasers and all kinds of uses for them. They can be used as a scalpel that is so delicate, it can be used on the eyes of human beings. Lasers are used to read price codes at your local supermarkets. And they’re used to play music and video on your CD’s and DVD’s. But now, there is a new type of laser so effective against human disease and injury that it is rapidly changing the practice of medicine. This is a new type of low-level laser which produces an unfocused light that has been...

Be One Of The First 200 To Call & Receive A Free DVD! Low-level lasers use less than one watt of power and they produce what can best be described as a “Healing Light”. Here is a somewhat un-scientific description of how this “Healing Light” can potentially help reverse the damage done by human sickness and disease. As you probably know, our entire bodies are made up of cells. The health of all human cells is based on energy. If your cells don’t receive enough energy, they will weaken and the body will become sick. For you to be healthy, what your cells need is exactly the right kind and the right amount of energy. Every time you get injured or become sick, the energy flow to your cells is disrupted. Until the proper type and amount of energy is restored, you will remain sick or injured. That’s what a low-level laser device does. It re-energizes the cells in your body with the right kind and proper amount of healing energy. It may surprise you to learn that low level lasers are ...
Used By Doctors To Heal Their Patients In The Fastest Way Possible! Could you guess what kind of doctors use the highest percent of low-level lasers on their patients? It’s doctors involved in sports medicine. Why? The answer is simple. You see, doctors involved in sports medicine often have to get their patients better in the fastest way humanly possible because every day he remains “unhealthy” can cost the sports organization millions of dollars. But here’s something exciting! You don’t actually need to go to a doctor to get laser therapy. If you want to you
What you have just read is a very simplistic (almost childish) explanation of low-level laser therapy, of how it works, and what it can do for you. But this is something that needs to be explained to you much more accurately by a real expert. This is information which just might help relieve you of any disease and might possibly save your life and the life of your loved ones. And best of all, you can ...

The best ones come with simple, easy-to-follow instructions and can be used by almost any person with average intelligence. Perhaps the best low-level lasers in the world have been invented by a doctor named Larry Lytle. He has studied lasers and human health for years, and Dr. Lytle is, without question, one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about low-level lasers... and... how they can be used...
To Help Almost Every Health Problem Ever Experienced By A Human Being! Dr. Lytle believes (as do many other people) low-level laser therapy will become the medicine of the future. If you hold a low-level laser device against the skin of your body and turn it on, you will be able to see the laser light... but... you will not be able to feel it. There probably won’t even be a sensation of warmth. Laser light is as gentle as the kiss of a butterfly. But, from a healing point of view, it is quite possible it is more effective than drugs or surgery. Low-level laser therapy is not just the medicine of the future. For many people who know about it, it is the “medicine” they use now. The problem of trying to explain the healing powers of low-level laser therapy is...
It Works So Well On So Many Different Problems, It Seems Like It Couldn’t Possibly Be True! But it is true! As mentioned earlier, all injury and illness creates an interruption of energy to the cells of the human body. The body will never recover until the proper amount and type of energy is restored to these cells. But once that energy is restored...
The Body Can Recover From Almost Anything! With the correct equipment, properly used, low level lasers have been clinically shown to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, increase cellular energy, increase cell permeability (so that the nutrients the cell needs to heal can get into the cell) and even help correct faulty DNA!*
Dr. Larry Lytle himself has written and compiled a FREE REPORT in which he explains to you exactly how and why low-level laser therapy works. Dr. Lytle will show you some unbelievable “before” and “after” pictures of people who have benefitted by this amazing new therapy. For some people, a free report and information like this can mark the beginning of an entirely new life... pain-free and full of energy. For others, it can make the difference of living a healthy life compared to a low-energy life of sickness and disease. And, for those who live with enormous pain every day ... this free report could truly guide them to a miracle! But even if you are not sick, not injured, or not in pain, you should still order this report. After all, it is 100% free. And almost nobody lives out their life without having at least some kind of sickness or injury. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that, if you do become sick or injured, you will at least know where to go to find some sort of answer to your problems that don’t involve dangerous drugs! Dr. Lytle is a remarkably young man in his 70’s. His life’s mission is “To Make A Difference In Humankind” and he has devoted his life to the accomplishment of that goal. He passionately believes low-level laser therapy is an important health management tool that can benefit nearly everyone that uses it.

TOE FUNGUS
Take Care of Your Toes
I
T BEGINS INNOCENTLY ENOUGH. A WHITE or yellow spot appears under the tip of your toenail. You don’t think much of it until you notice it’s spreading. Soon, your nail begins to thicken, develop a ragged edge and discolor. It’s ugly, and it could be somewhat painful. You have a fungal infection. “Fungus is usually caused by moisture when it is retained within the nail plate,” says Dr. Michael Horwitz, medical director of Feet for Life Podiatry Centers. “Most of the time, this is because people shower in the morning or bathe at some point in the day; and at that point in time, the nail absorbs water. When the nail plate is injured or thickened for some reason, it absorbs more water than usual. That water stays in the nail plate, and that’s what causes fungus.” Fungi are microscopic organisms that thrive in dark, moist places, making a waterlogged toenail
plate an inviting environment. The warm, confined space under a toenail that is covered by a sock and shoe for long periods is perfect for fungal growth and helps explain why nail fungus is more often found on toenails than on fingernails. Diminished blood circulation and slower nail growth due to aging also may make it harder for the body to fight off fungal infections. To help discourage fungal growth, drying out the environment thoroughly is one strategy. “One of the best ways to help get rid of the water is to debride (clean) the nail plate,” Horwitz says. “But
sometimes, the water hides in the corners of the nail, and in order to get that part of the nail clean, you have to do a little minor work in the nail grooves, which will make it much less likely for the nail to hold on to the water, and therefore the nail can actually heal.” Horwitz notes that this strategy, which prevents the nail from absorbing as much water, is important to healing and preventing reinfection. Reducing moisture around the foot also reduces the incidence of fungal infections of the nails or skin. If nail fungus is not treated, it can cause permanent damage to the nails or result in a more Continued on page 75

Anemia: Why It’s Making Your Pet Sick
A
nemia is a familiar term to most of us, but one we hope we won’t have to become too familiar with. Anemia is a lack of red blood cells, and there are all sorts of anemias and myriads of causes. But the truth remains: the result is always the same. There are particular kinds of anemia that are not uncommon for our dogs and cats. Hemolytic (hemo—blood, lytic—break) anemias are destructive in nature. When your pet has a hemolytic anemia, its red blood cells are being destroyed. Two common types of hemolytic anemia are immune-mediated and non-immune-mediated. This article will focus on the immune-mediated hemolytic anemia type. Anemia can be caused by a lack of production of red blood cells, usually involving the bone marrow. Accelerated destruction of red blood cells could dwindle their numbers, too. So that is essentially it: You lose them physically, don’t make them, or they get destroyed. Either way, your pet is anemic. In hemolytic anemia, the cells are ‘killed’ by some sort of disease process or by your own body. Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, or IMHA, is extremely complex and scientifically and physiologically nuanced to the point that it boggles your mind. Doing homework for this month’s discussion revealed that some really smart people are by Kenneth Geoghegan, DVM

The goal of treatment is to quell the immune system and bring it back in line with a normally functioning one; and it can range from simple to incredibly complex, depending on severity of the disease and concurrent damage/diseases. working really hard to get to the bottom of the causes of IMHA, and that those causes are many. For us regular folk, the body sees its own red blood cells as foreign and destroys them. That is the immune-mediated part. That our dog or cat’s own self would take such a drastic and harmful step is difficult to understand. Why would your own body take an active roll in wrecking itself? Your body has spent its entire life trying to return to a steady state of normal, or homeostasis, even in the face of all the bad things we torture it with. In IMHA, this is reversed and the consequences can be devastating and even deadly. Face it, ‘Fido’ isn’t
going far without any blood. There are two kinds of IMHA: primary and secondary. Differentiating between the two is crucial, so that treatment is directed and targeted for the best response possible. As with all else, killing the head of the dragon takes care of the rest. But here comes the zinger: Upwards of 70 percent of primary IMHA cases are spontaneous events without an underlying etiology. Idiopathic is the medical term for, We don’t know what the heck caused it. Idiopathic autoimmune anemia is the most common form. Well, how do we find the head of an idiopathic dragon? Carefully, and with much education and cooperation, as the history, diagnosis, supportive and targeted treatment will take teamwork between hospital and home. Secondary IMHA is just as daunting, but the dragon’s head is usually easier to find. Secondary immune-mediated anemia results from some other cause. Cancers can sometime result in immune-mediated anemia. Sometimes, an infection is the primary problem, or a toxic reaction to a drug, which then winds up causing the secondary anemia. Skipping the academics, the symptoms are as such: pale gums, pale whites of the eyes (sclera), pale conjunctiva, weakness, lethargy, labored breathing and exercise intolerance—all of which can be chronic/intermittent, or acute in onset. More severe signs can involve the heart working harder to ship out the remaining oxygen-movers in a desperate attempt to keep all the organs properly fueled. Diagnosing IMHA can become involved since test results can be falsely negative in many cases. Multiple tests must be run to hash out the most details so that the story can be fully told. Breed predilections can aid in diagnosis of other forms of non-immune mediated hemolytic anemia, as well. The breed predispositions most often involve the lack of certain enzymes and seem to be inherited, thus affecting some younger dogs and cats. Cocker spaniels and springer spaniels are affected with one type of inherited enzyme deficiency and West Highland white terriers, cairn terriers, and basenjis are the victims of another type. Cats are not immune either, with Somalis and Abyssinians overrepresented. IMHA can pick any breed, though—even mixes—but Irish setters, Old English sheepdogs, and the poor Cocker seem to get this form more than others. The goal of treatment is to quell the immune system and bring it back in line with a normally functioning one; and it can range from simple to incredibly complex, depending on severity of the disease and concurrent damage/diseases. Your pet’s vet will keep you abreast of what it will take to fix your loved one. Many of these cases have favorable outcomes—just keep up the teamwork and work together to affect a cure.

Senior living that makes everyone happy.
Just ask Aberdeen Heights resident Sandy Hunsaker. She never wanted her kids to worry about her — but she didn’t want to compromise her idea of retirement, either. “The concept of Aberdeen Heights is something I completely grasped. This kind of living I’m ready for — it’s like having insurance, having a dinner party every night with your friends, and giving your kids the best present you can imagine.”

THE GATESWORTH
The Taste of Home WHEN FRANCES VANDE KERK WAS A LITTLE GIRL, HER MOTHER specialized in making comfort food: pot roast, chicken fricassee and especially chicken and dumplings, a dish that persists in her mind today. As she looks back happily on those food memories, the Gatesworth resident knows that chef Brian Hardy is more than willing to recreate the recipe for her. “If you’re going to live in a place as great as The Gatesworth, you really need to have a top-notch chef in charge of the food because it’s so important to the residents.” The importance of food and recollections will be celebrated when The Gatesworth hosts Menus and Memories, an OASIS luncheon event that is part of the organization’s ‘Founder’s Series.’ With OASIS marking its 30th anniversary in 2012, and Gatesworth nearing its 25th year, the institutions make an appropriate pairing as they share the same vision for seniors. “This is a time of life where you can expand your world, rather than The Gatesworth co-owner David having it contract,” says OASIS Smith and OASIS founder Marylen founder Marylen Mann. Mann Both organizations encourage active living for seniors with their programs and activiON THE COVER ties—the variety of which offers The OASIS Menus and options for any interest. For more information, it’s my life story, or the things call The Gatesworth at 993I’ve learned that I want to pass 0111 or OASIS at 539-4556. along,” Mann explains. The idea of such bequests was promoted by another recent Founder’s Series event at The Gatesworth, Creating a Legacy, which helped participants record individual messages. In the same way, part of leaving a legacy involves consideration of your personal experiences—a concept that will be explored during Menus and Memories. Hardy, a St. Louis native and Culinary Institute of America graduate, will prepare and discuss a meal that represents what guided him to being a chef. “Growing up in a multiple-child family, you look to distinguish yourself, and that’s what I was good at,” he says. At The Gatesworth, where Hardy has worked since 2001, he uses that passion to create dishes that satisfy residents’ wishes, as well as evoke their own memories. “If someone brings me a recipe and says, I used to cook these meatballs when I was young, I’m happy to recreate that because I like to cook what people enjoy,” he notes. “It’s almost like you’re cooking a family dinner every night here.” The Menus and Memories event is just a glimpse into the offerings that The Gatesworth and OASIS make available to seniors to promote healthy and happy aging, Mann says. As the institutions look to the future, they will continue to help seniors thrive, Mann says. “We want to give people the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the community and get involved, whether it’s offering some good food and a story about a meal, or helping them tell their story for future generations.”

Joint Technology SENIOR WELLNESS: KNEE REPLACEMENTS
Expanded reasons easons for a
A
S THE AMERICAN POPULATION AGES, SOME OF OUR parts naturally wear out. In particular, wear and tear on joints causes pain for millions of people, and knees are among the most common joints prone to age-related problems. Decades of force placed on our knees take a toll on the cushioning cartilage, and may result in enough discomfort to curtail daily activities and negatively affect quality of life. “There are more people living longer, and they’re pushing themselves further along in athletics earlier in their lives,” says Dr. Donald Bassman, an orthopedic surgeon in Creve Coeur. “Our joints are being put to higher use, and that doesn’t necessarily cause arthritis, but joints that are more prone to it probably develop it a little bit earlier, so you’ll probably see more total joint replacements than in the past.” In 2009, the last year for which figures are available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 676,000 knees received artificial joints. Although the number of total knee replacements seems staggering, in most cases, the surgery was a last resort. “In patients with extensive cartilage loss, we will often try conservative approaches, such as anti-inflammatories, lifestyle modifications and sometimes injections to help reduce the symptoms of arthritis. If pain limits a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living despite conservative measures, then a knee replacement is indicated,” explains Dr. Jason Young, an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic Associates. And when surgery is needed, today’s patients benefit from new technologies that make the artificial joints fit and move more like a natural knee. “Knee replacement has certainly come a long way in the last 20 years,” Young continues. “We’ve seen improvements on knee sizing, including gender-specific knee prostheses, which all serve to recreate an artificial knee with good motion and balance of the ligaments.” Young thinks the most significant event in the evolution of knee replacement is the continued development of the artificial joints’ plastic liner (polyethylene). The newer materials allow shock absorption while resisting motion-induced stress. “This is important because the small micro-particles that are released as the liners wear out are typically what cause the body’s inflammatory reaction, which then leads to loosening,” he says. “In addition, there are now partial knee replacements that can be used in selected patients who have just one localized area of arthritis. This allows the patient to maintain as much native joint surface as possible.” Surgical techniques also evolve, notes Dr. Paul Lux, an orthopedic surgeon with the Orthopedic Center of St. Louis. “The latest technique for putting in a total knee is through a minimally invasive incision,” he says. “This involves sparing the quadriceps muscle, which in the past, was always cut. Also, newer surfaces to the implants allow for cementless implantation of the components. In the past, the implants were cemented in place and the glue does not last forever. Once the implants loosen, the entire knee has to be redone. The recovery is quicker and the stay in the hospital is shorter.” For many people, knee replacements allow a return to an active lifestyle. “Most people will walk without a walker or cane and drive by three weeks post-op, and then have four to six weeks of outpatient therapy,” Lux says. “Patients can return to any activities that are normal for their age. I’ve had patients complete marathons, bike the MS 150 and compete in the Senior Olympics.”

Resources for Seniors
Molly Crane and Rose Waldman eat Passover Seder at Covenant House Senior Center.
A St. Andrew’s staff member spends time with a local senior.
Community Support The St. Louis community provides a variety of practical, educational and social resources for seniors, but many older adults may not be aware of the opportunities. Learn what these local organizations have to offer. Jewish Community Center Access to healthy, kosher meals can be a challenge for the elderly. Luckily, Kitchen J at the Jewish Community Center provides a solution with its home-delivered meals and dinners at Covenant House Senior Center. “Seniors recognize and appreciate the access to these meals that may be almost impossible for them to obtain elsewhere,” says Kitchen J supervisor Linda Korn. Both programs, organized and run by Kitchen J staff, are sponsored by the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging. The home-delivery program provides hot kosher meals every afternoon Monday through Friday, as well as a weekend frozen meal option, to seniors who meet certain qualifications, specifically the inability to access or prepare their own meals. codes surrounding the community center: 63146, 63141 and 63132. For more mobile seniors, or those who do not qualify for home delivery, the Covenant House meals offer a popular alternative. For approximately 39 years, dinner has been served Monday through Friday at 5 p.m., with a Shabbat dinner on Fridays. The community meal site is open to anyone who is 60 years of age or older, and Kitchen J sees an average of 80 to 85 diners nightly. A $3.50 suggested donation provides an affordable meal that follows the dietary guidelines for seniors, as well an opportunity to spend time with peers, Korn says. “Many nights, we have programming after dinner and it gives seniors a place to come and meet their friends. The social aspect is just as important as the nutritional one.” For more information, call 442-3149 or visit jccstl.com. OASIS Institute For 30 years, OASIS has focused on offering a three-fold approach to successful aging, says education program manager Allison Woodworth.
“We really believe if you live a healthy lifestyle, keep learning new things and get engaged with the community, you’ll be a happier person. We want to keep seniors active, contributing and socializing.” To that end, the nonprofit organization offers a variety of opportunities for people 50 years old and up, ranging from exercise and wellness programs, educational classes covering topics like nature and science, computer technology and writing, to volunteer outlets such as inter-generational tutoring. “These are people who have a lot of skills and talent left to give, and it’s an opportunity to do something positive for themselves and the community,” Woodworth explains. One of the more popular ongoing programs is the music classes, held weekly at Crown Center for Senior Living in Ladue. Led by instructors who also are older than 50, the program offers four different groups: intermediate concert band, jazz ensemble, small wind ensemble and swing ensemble for pitched percussion. The bands also play gigs in the community and perform two annual concerts for OASIS members. With all skill levels
welcome, the program epitomizes the efforts of OASIS, Woodworth says. “It’s been shown that playing music is a wonderful way to retain your skills and keep your brain and body active. You have the camaraderie of your bandmates, while challenging yourself to learn something new—it’s something to look forward to every week.” Class fees vary for each program. For details, call 539-4556 or visit oasisnet.org/stlouis. St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors System Through the efforts of St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors System, seniors can access important services wherever they call home, says president and CEO Mary Alice Ryan. “It could be at the home they’ve been living in for 50 years, at their children’s house, a senior community or even during a hospital stay. There’s a growing need for these home- and community-based services.” Recently partnering with St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Andrew’s offers services in three different categories through its Senior Solutions program. Supportive services include companionship, housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, laundry, medication reminders, bill pay and minor home repair. The realm of nursing services incorporates diabetes management, wound care, insulin shots and home safe assessments. In addition, family caregiving solutions take both the patient’s and their family’s needs into consideration,

including care assessments, counseling, family conflict support and advocacy. “If we’re not taking care of the children, spouses or whoever is the support system, the senior is going to have more problems,” Ryan explains. funded through self-pay, government programs or charitable donations. “The whole goal is to offer this continuum of support so seniors can stay independent wherever they call home, for as long as possible.” For more information, call 726-0111 or visit standrews1.com.

Make An Appointment A
s a child, you probably got an annual check-up like clockwork. And you probably made sure your own children saw the pediatrician at least once a year for a basic physical. Yet for many adults, the yearly physical exam ritual eventually evaporates. However, doctors note that regular check-ups are an important part of good preventive care at every age. If you’ve been enrolled in Medicare Part B for at least a year and have not had a ‘Welcome to Medicare’ doctor’s visit during that period, it’s time to get back to the doctor for an annual wellness visit. The yearly check-up is free-of-charge for beneficiaries and includes a health risk assessment that forms the basis for a proactive preventive care plan. However, many seniors are failing to take advantage of this new benefit, which was instituted as part of the Affordable Care Act. “Not many people seem to be aware of this type of visit,” says Dr. Kanwal Kahn, a physician specializing in internal medicine with Diagnostic Internists of Chesterfield at St. Luke’s Hospital. In addition to reviewing general health and assessing health risks, patients receive preventive vaccines, schedule screening tests and undergo cognitive assessments, she says. The senior wellness visit covered by Medicare lays out the road map for continued preventive care and allows physicians and patients to identify and focus on particular health concerns, yet it is not as comprehensive as a complete physical exam. For example, blood tests are not part of the annual wellness visit, says Dr. Amin Valliani, a physician specializing in internal medicine with Premier Medical Specialists and at Des Peres Hospital. If extra tests or procedures are called for, they may require a co-pay. Despite the restrictions, Valliani believes that senior citizens should take advantage of the annual wellness visit benefit “especially for screening purposes.” Tests that may diagnose prostate cancer, aortic aneurysms or colon cancer are among the common screenings recommended for older patients based on a personal health profile and family history. When seeing a doctor for a physical or annual wellness visit, it’s important to bring some basic information along. Kahn recommends at minimum a list of all current prescription and over-the-counter medications, and says that patients should be prepared to request vaccines, such as the flu or pneumonia vaccines, and to discuss specific concerns or symptoms. Valliani suggests that patients bring copies of their medical records from other physicians and have information prepared that outlines family history of any chronic diseases, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Don’t give up your annual check-ups as you age. “Annual wellness visits are very important for seniors to help keep them independent and in good health,” Kahn says. by Connie Mitchell

Keep Moving The old adage use it or lose it still applies today. So, local caregivers are working to promote active lifestyles for seniors who are homebound or just need a little extra help. “As long as you have the right interventions, you can stay active at any age,” says Advanced Nursing’s director of nurses Paula DiCampo. “Seniors just have to do more planning and have more assistance.” Home care agencies such as Advanced Nursing and Homewatch Caregivers provide that assistance. Advanced Nursing’s staffers stay in seniors’ homes to help them with daily activities, medical needs and transportation. All the while, they also are providing physical, mental and social stimulation. For example, the agency helps seniors with each step of attending exercise classes—from signing up, to transportation and getting dressed for each session. Many clients enjoy swimming, DiCampo notes, because it is a nonweight-bearing activity that is easier for seniors. The agency also aids clients in returning to daily activities following injuries. “One woman broke her hip, and we helped her get back to her favorite activity: walking her dog daily,” DiCampo recalls. “It boosted her morale.” In addition, the nurses can provide mental and social stimulation, such as transportation to lifelong learning classes at Washington University, local speakers’ series or church events. Homewatch Caregivers also provides hourly to 24-hour live-in senior care, with the added bonus of helping seniors stay active. Caregivers promote mental activity through art therapy and reminiscence classes, where seniors can share favorite memories. Caregivers also drive seniors to social activities such as luncheons, theater shows, shopping and exercise classes. Simple daily interactions—from conversation between caregivers and seniors to going to the doctor—also help mental and social stimulation, notes Homewatch VP Maria Gianino. The International Council on Active Aging is another group encouraging seniors to keep moving. Aberdeen Heights in Kirkwood became a member of the council, which challenges senior living communities to provide new, interesting ways to get seniors moving. With help from local vendors, Aberdeen recently hosted a slate of activities for the council’s Active Aging Week. Physical activities included a seated dancing exercise, outdoor yoga and Tai Chi classes, and a water volleyball tournament. The water volleyball games, in particular, give Aberdeen’s seniors a good workout, notes fitness coordinator Zoe Taylor. “It really gets their competitive side going.” No matter the activity, local caregivers say the key is to continue to seek out physical and mental challenges. “Sedentary activity perpetuates itself,” DiCampo notes. “Stay as active as you can—it promotes healing and a sense of well-being.” by Brittany Nay

SENIOR WELLNESS: OSTEOARTHRITIS
Managing Joint Pain A
LMOST EVERYONE WHO LIVES BEYOND middle age can anticipate developing osteoarthritis at some point. It is one of the most common age-related diseases, caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints due to wear and tear over time. “The most common presenting symptom is joint pain that typically worsens with increased use of the joint and improves with rest,” says Dr. Jennifer Knox of Mercy Clinic Family Medicine. “However, as the osteoarthritis progresses, patients often experience pain with less activity and can experience pain at rest and at night while trying to fall asleep. Patients also may notice a phenomenon known as ‘gelling,’ in which they experience joint stiffness that lasts 30 minutes or less after awakening, but can reoccur after periods of inactivity. Some patients also may suffer from intermittent swelling of the involved joint and experience a feeling known as crepitus, which is a grating sensation.” The pain and grating occurs because cartilage no longer protects the joints or allows for shock absorption and smooth motion. The
bone-on-bone condition of larger joints, such as knees and hips, is treated with a progression of medical interventions, sometimes resulting in total joint replacement. While this is a viable option for knees and hips, the spine is another story. Osteoarthritis of the vertebra, which causes pain primarily in the neck and lower back, is more challenging to treat. “It’s
a very complicated area,” notes Dr. John Atkinson, acting chief of the division of rheumatology with Washington University Physicians. He adds that steroids and pain medications injected at the site are typical treatments, but may not help everyone and do not slow the disease process. Weight loss can help relieve strain on the back, and strengthening the muscles of the legs, core and back helps stabilize the spine, but Atkinson is looking toward revolutionary solutions, such as the creation of new cartilage using stem cells. Until that happens, patients must continue to try the therapies and lifestyle strategies physicians currently recommend. In addition to those mentioned by Atkinson, Knox advises patients to consider physical therapy, low-impact exercise, adaptive devices such as canes or orthotics, and heat to ease pain. Beyond that, Knox recommends over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil). The exact strategy depends on the joints most affected and the degree to which daily activities are impacted. Atkinson remains optimistic that new treatments and even a cure will be developed. “There’s a lot of work going on in the field,” he says. “Thirty years ago I wouldn’t have been optimistic, but I’ve seen a lot of advances in that time.”

A New Take on Tudor WHEN CAROLYN GROVE OF C. V. GROVE Interiors looks at a project, she sees potential that few interior designers have the gift to see. She recently was asked by a longtime client to ‘freshen up’ the home that she had done for them 15 years ago. “My client loves color,” Grove emphatically states, which is obvious to the visitor upon entering the foyer. A custom-banded runner climbs the stairs to the second level. A Majolica collection creates a colorful tablescape that is lit by a custom lamp that Grove created using a Majolica teapot, as well as an Art Nouveau chandelier she purchased in Paris. Stepping down into the living room, your eyes gaze at the stunning, custom-designed woven wool area rug that serves as a plateau for a gathering of patterns, colors and woods. “We sent a piece of the Clarence House tosspillow fabric from the sofa to match the wool threads for the rug. We didn’t want too many BY ALAN E. BRAINERD
shades of coral in the room,” Grove notes. The fireplace is scaled for the room, but it wouldn’t ‘sing’ if it weren’t for the large antique brass andirons. Artwork by Dan Christensen (Grove’s late brother-in-law) crowns the fireplace. A custom-finished Brunschwig & Fils cocktail table is harmonized with an antique tole side table and turquoise garden stool. The dining room is dramatic. Like a glittering crown, the Niermann Weeks chandelier illuminates the dining table surrounded by custom-upholstered chairs in a Romo silk fabric, all gently resting on an antique Oriental carpet. For the kitchen, the Vermont Danby stone used on the island and countertops is echoed in the basket weave backsplash. The Bausman dining table is surrounded by McGuire custom ‘cracked ice’ chairs. Again, Grove went to Niermann Weeks for the chandelier. All this Continued on page 54

HOME Continued from page 51 beauty is surrounded by an Asian-inspired Kravet wall covering, adding just enough patterns to the space. For a little hideaway, the morning room complements the kitchen with shades of grey and plum. The F. Schumacher wall covering is the backdrop for Vervain silk draperies, a Bausman secretary and a Zebra skin rug. Look up! The coffered ceiling was provided by Jim Bowling to create the look of a master woodworker that is actually a drop-in ceiling! Nowhere in the home is the outside view more effective than from the family room: Large windows frame the lush botanical landscape. Inside, Clarence House pillows add a splash of whimsy and pattern to the coral velvet tone-on-tone sofa. The back of the seating area is framed by a portiere created from Designers Guild and Vervain silks. A pair of club chairs flank a Woodland custom cocktail table that faces a great Gothic stone fireplace by Artifacts. The piece de résistance is at the far end of the room, where an antique blackamoor bust (found at Ken Meisner’s) rests on a drop-leaf table that creates the foreground for an antique tapestry hung under a Juliet balcony. This home has been updated and fine-tuned by a maestro of design, creating a very harmonious environment for the lady and gentleman of the house. Cheers!
The right mix of stone, wood, color and texture come together to create a welcoming environment in the kitchen, aided by Bob Burmeister of Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry.

charming 1968 tour book I recently was given begins thus: Savannah is a lady. A lady is gracious, a thoughtful gentlewoman who keeps her treasures polished for the pleasure of her guests. A lady never shouts. Savannah speaks in a soft Southern murmur. Listen closely. She has marvelous memories to share. This gracious lady also has a million ghost stories to share. Listen closely. Just about everyone you meet will have his or her own version of the paranormal. Revolutionary soldiers still battling it out on moonlit nights over at nearby Skidway Island...Francis Sorrel’s wife, who killed herself by jumping from the second floor of the SorrelWeed House...Danny Hansford, a local male prostitute, who was murdered at the Mercer House, popularized by author John Berendt in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The hoodoo notion of midnight refers to it as the time for good magic, as well as evil magic. Much evil magic was afoot in The Pirate’s House, one of Savannah’s most haunted places — now a favorite local restaurant. Bloodthirsty pirates who sailed along the coastline would gather here to drink and talk and drink some more. Robert Louis Stevenson, in Treasure Island, said, Old Captain Flint, ‘tis said, died at the Pirate’s House in an upstairs room. Waiters frequently use the staircase to the storage room,

Continued from page 63 where they swear the ghost of Captain Flint lives on. Some staffers entering the storage room have encountered flying objects sailing off the shelves, and patrons in the small dining room report hearing footsteps overhead. One of my personal favorites is the motorcyclist ghost, seen often along Eisenhower Drive wearing a leather jacket and glow-in-the-dark tattoos all over its arms and neck. He or she has even been known to drive right through an oncoming car. Even ghosts have to sleep (I think), and the Ballastone Inn, a luxurious 1838 bed and breakfast, is one of my favorites. Equally luxurious and quite romantic is The Gastonian Inn. For a restored historic stay, try Planter’s Inn on Reynolds Square. And perched above the 18th century cobblestone streets paralleling the Savannah River is the contemporary-styled Bohemian Hotel Savannah, with chic design and exceptional guest rooms. The property is a charming addition to the cityscape. Even ghosts have to eat (I think), and some of my favorites are: The Olde Pink House, for Southern charm and cuisine; Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, for fried chicken and banana pudding in

a boarding-house setting (long lines and no reservations); Local 11 Ten, a beautifully decorated Savannah gem; 17hundred90 Inn & Restaurant, fine dining in a 1790 mansion; 700 Drayton Restaurant, where modern sensibility and great fried green tomatoes meet; and Garibaldi’s Café, a quirky local hangout housed in an old fire station. There’s much more to Savannah than ghosts, of course, but it is Halloween, after all. So, for the brave, here’s a list of ghoulish tours: Old Savannah Tours, Hearse Ghost Tours, Blue Orb Ghost Tours, Sixth Sense Savannah and Creepy Crawl Haunted Pub Tours. At All About Savannah Tours, Kathy Moore, a walking encyclopedia of Savannah lore, will hold your hand as you walk through Colonial Park Cemetery and the garden of good and evil. This gracious lady, Savannah, still has many polished treasures to show you any season of the year. Stroll through the enchanting city squares and savor the endless restaurants and historic homes. Just be careful when darkness sets in, and watch out for floating luminescent orbs of every color, the motorcyclist ghost and things that go bump in the night.

unreliable, secondhand gossip from around the world* NICKI MINAJ AND MARIAH CAREY
After a vitriolic fight between the two divas was secretly taped and posted online, the feud between them has gone thermo-nuclear. Nicki was apparently overheard backstage at a concert saying that if she had a gun, she would shoot Mariah Carey. Members of her inner circle are dismissing the claim as an idle threat, spoken in the heat of the moment. I don’t know. Probably the best solution for everyone concerned is a caged death match, Hunger Games-style.
KRISTEN STEWART AND ROBERT PATTINSON The Twilight lovers were spotted out and about in Hollywood last week, enjoying a meal and walking hand-in-hand as if nothing had ever happened. Onlookers said Stewart was upbeat and attentive, while Pattinson spent most of the evening quietly brooding in the shadows. So I guess everything is back to normal.
THE SITUATION Apparently, the former Jersey Shore star has fallen back into his old partying ways. After some wildly embarrassing drunken displays on the reality show, The Situation completed a stint in rehab, but was spotted all over West Hollywood last week tying one on. Insiders say career stress is the cause. Huh. You’d think choosing a career that centered on sun-bathing and working out wouldn’t cause that much anxiety.
‘THE LONE RANGER’ Disney has finally released the trailer for the remake of the ‘50’s TV show. The film has Social Network star Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as his faithful sidekick, Tonto. The film was scheduled for release this summer but Disney pushed it back, prompting many questions and concerns. Like, for one, why does a guy who calls himself the Lone Ranger have a sidekick?

ELL, IT HAPPENED. It was inevitable. I would say I was surprised it hadn’t happened sooner, but I know the reason. I am a chicken…and also a bit lazy. I am a lazy chicken. But there comes a time when even the laziest chicken must draw a line in the sand— forgive that incomprehensible metaphor, clearly I am still reeling. I had my first grounding. There was an incident. I will be deliberately vague, but suffice it to say, a grounding was warranted. Frankly, I was kind of excited about it. Grounding is like a stage on the parenting ropes course. I relished the moment as I had imagined it through the years — as my mother had said it to me: Young lady, you are grounded. Well, I didn’t say it exactly like that, but it was good. I was good. I was serious and heavy-handed and Cranky was obsequious and contrite. I had successfully delivered my first grounding. I banged the proverbial gavel. Then came the problem: A grounding is more than a moment in time. You can say you’re grounded all you want, it’s executing the grounding that’s the trick. What they don’t tell you in the parenting handbook is that you’re grounded, too. The warden has to be in the prison with the inmate. Plus, in actual prison, the inmate can’t nag the warden. Does my grounding include the football game? Does my grounding include no smoothies? Am I grounded from Twitter? It’s exhausting. So in the end, after a tremendous force of will, I completed my first grounding. Yes, there may have been some ill-advised guilt purchases, but I did it. I grounded a teenager—on a four-day weekend nonetheless, and I never want to go through it again. So hopefully, all of my children have learned a valuable lesson and will not stray from the straight and narrow again. I think that’s a reasonable expectation.

HIT AND RUN RATING: 7 out of 10
F
IRST OF ALL, IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN Taken, THE FIRST one, drop what you’re doing and rent it — it’s the best action movie since Die Hard. That being said, of course, they were going to make a sequel. Why wouldn’t Liam Neeson want some beach-house money? Yes, it pales in comparison to the first one. Yes, it’s a tad dismissive. Yes, there’s a palpable sense that the actors are going through the motions, but yes, I loved every minute. Our story begins as the bodies of the Albanian slave-traders that Brian Mills (Liam Neeson) killed rescuing his daughter are being transported for burial. Murad Krasniqi (Rade Serbedzija) vows revenge—forget that his son was in human trafficking, he’s going to make the man who killed him pay. And what comes next is 88 minutes of white-knuckle fun. Car chases, check; explosions, check; hand-to-hand combat, check; cool bad-guy death, check. Plus, don’t forget, on top of it all, that Liam Neeson is a great actor. I liked every minute. Don’t expect Shindler’s List, expect Taken 2 and you won’t be disappointed.

He is a married father of two children; but his wife, Helen, is a selfabsorbed sort who can’t summon the energy or simple brainpower to cook a meal, much less run a household. Additionally, he’s annoyed by his aged mother and her increasing descent into dementia.
DATES:
He shares his anxieties with his best friend, a Jewish psychiatrist named Maurice. John also finds himself increasingly attracted to a winsome student named Anne, who comforts him physically and emotionally. Even as he capitulates to adultery, Halder rationalizes his behavior and maintains his perception of himself as a good husband, father, son and friend.
GROUP: St. Louis Actors’ Studio VENUE: Gaslight Theater, 358 North Boyle
Oct. 12-14, 18-21 TICKETS: $30; 4582978, stlas. org or ticketmaster. com More theater reviews available at laduenews. com.
When Halder is approached about joining Adolf Hitler’s Nazi movement, he sees career opportunities even while he dismisses Nazi anti-Semitism as mere flag-waving for the masses. As Hitler’s rise to power progresses, and Halder benefits materially from his role in the SS, he continues to convince himself that theories about euthanasia, genetic purity and self-satisfaction are, all in all, quite ‘good.’
HIGHLIGHTS: Key to the success of this rendition of playwright C.P. Taylor’s work is B. Weller in the central role of Halder. It’s critical to the plot of Good that Halder be portrayed not as duplicitous, but rather as a dupe, which Weller achieves in slow and subtle gradations.
Pitch Perfect HIGH NOTE
RATING: 6 out of 10
I
’LL MAKE THIS QUICK BECAUSE IT’S EXACTLY AS YOU imagine: Take Glee, remove most of the politically correct diversity, add the plot of Bring It On, the dance moves of Step Up and the snarky attitude of Mean Girls, and I give you Pitch Perfect. It’s not unenjoyable, just unoriginal. BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

The supporting cast includes a splendid turn by Teresa Doggett as Halder’s fearful and inconvenient mother. Larry Dell tests Halder’s resolve to the point of fatal exasperation as Maurice, while April Strelinger and Rachel Fenton ornament Halder’s persona as his wife and mistress, respectively. David Wassilak commands the stage as an imperious German military man who reveals his own hypocrisy, and fears, to Halder. Troy Turnipseed, Missy Miller and Paul Cooper capably fill minor roles, as does Ben Ritchie as an oafish Hitler and others.

Director Milt Zoth somehow manages to keep his cumbersome cast from bumping into one another on the postage stamp known as the Gaslight Theater stage, all the more remarkable since the 10 players remain visible throughout.

La Cantina
Muy Delicioso! LA CANTINA OPENED EARLIER THIS YEAR IN Webster Groves, and is the second eatery for Roberto Trevino, who also owns Amigo’s Cantina in neighboring Kirkwood. We found it to be every bit the equal of his flagship eatery. A well-made margarita is a definite sign of a quality Mexican restaurant, and the House Margarita ($8) at La Cantina was a solid example of this often-abused classic. It had tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and a little bit of agave nectar. That’s it. For those used to margaritas whipped up from pre-made mixes in slushee machines, do yourself a favor and head over to La Cantina to taste one done right. We enjoyed a couple of these as we plowed through an order of Trevino’s Guacamole ($6), avocado with tomato, lime juice, green chile, onion, garlic and cilantro. The main portion of the La Cantina menu was centered around botanas, basically small plates. The guacamole was the lead item of the Botanas Chiquitas list, so after finishing that plate off, we chose the Camarones a la Mojo ($10) from the larger portions under Botanas Grandes. This dish consisted of jumbo shrimp sauteed with roasted garlic, a chipotle adobo puree with spicy rice and pico de gallo. There was a ‘Very Spicy’ warning next this on the menu, which was reason enough to order it up. Truthfully, it did have some kick but not too much heat, just a little initial fiery flare that mellowed quickly into a delicious, smoky finish. Still on a shrimp quest, next up was the Camarones ($8) from the Quesadillas Pequenas BY SIDNEY LEWIS
choices. Again, plenty of jumbo shrimp formed the foundation, augmented with onion, tomato, green chile, cilantro, lime juice and two types of cheese, Oaxaca and goat. It was all contained in a flour tortilla and baked to perfection, just enough to crisp up the tortilla and help the cheese attain that choice, gooey consistency. Filled with surf, we hit up a turf offering. The Bistec Tacos ($10), from the Rellenos Para Tacos, were strips of tender marinated steak, which were sauteed with poblano pepper, onion and bell pepper. We wrapped ours up in corn tortillas, though flour ones also were available. To cap things off, we had a dish of Cinnamon Ice Cream ($3) from the Postres selections, though next time we aim to save some room for the Xangos ($8), described on the menu as “cheesecake wrapped in a pastry tortilla and fried until flaky.” La Cantina is housed in the former Two Nice Guys. The atmosphere was relaxed, and Trevino himself made the rounds of the dining room, greeting customers and checking on service. He let it slip that a happy hour was in the works, which should be good news for parched workers who find themselves in downtown Webster after clocking out. With quality food, good digs and an affordable price point, La Cantina should be on the list for fans of south of the border flavor.

TOES Continued from page 26 widespread infection. Treatment can eradicate the infection, but fungal infections are notorious for recurring, so individuals who have been treated need to be especially systematic with preventive care and seek treatment immediately if a recurrence is suspected. Topical treatments include Penlac, a clear prescription nail polish that is applied to the nail and surrounding skin once a day. Physicians also prescribe anti-fungal creams alone or in concert with oral medications. Podiatrists also may recommend laser therapy to remove nail fungus. The Q-Clear system is used by several local podiatrists, including Dr. John Holtzman, a podiatrist with Missouri Foot and
IF NAIL FUNGUS IS NOT TREATED, IT CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE NAILS OR RESULT IN A MORE WIDESPREAD INFECTION. Ankle. Although Q-Clear is advertised as a singletreatment solution, Holtzman always has patients return after six months to ensure that the fungus is not recurring. “At that point, we may recommend a topical anti-fungal to be used about three times a week to help prevent recurrence,” he says.
The Q-Clear treatment itself is quick and usually painless. It takes less than a minute to treat a nail, Holtzman says, and most people report no discomfort. “And there’s no after-care needed,” he adds. Laser treatments have decreased in cost since they were first introduced several years ago, but they are not covered by insurance. For this reason, some patients opt for the topical and/or oral medication route, Holtzman notes. “The laser is a nice option to have, and it works well. A lot of people like it because it’s easy and fast.” No matter which approach you decide on, don’t wait until nail fungus begins to destroy your toenail. Seek medical advice if you notice an unusual and persistent spot.

You read that right. I’m here to tell you that it’s time, once and for all, to stop exercising. I stopped years ago, at least in the traditional sense. Let me explain. For many people, me included, “exercise” at a typical fitness center doesn’t work. It takes loads of time to receive any alleged “benefits,” which often turn out to be such small changes that you can barely measure them. The typical workout is also tedious. It requires you to put on work-out clothes and spend countless hours going to places where you are forced to sweat in front of people you don’t know – or worse, people you DO know – after waiting in line for the privilege. Then there’s the worry that at any moment you might fall off the stationary bicycle at mile 7,982 and die of boredom. That’s why most of us give up long before our membership expires. But no fitness regimen will do any lasting good if you don’t do it. You need something you can stick with, something that works with your schedule. Something that won’t bore or injure you. The truth is, most of us don’t really want to exercise as much as we want the benefits that exercise delivers: We want to be physically fit. We want to slow the aging process and lower our risk of disease. We want to feel good when we look in the mirror.
What we really want, in other words, is MUSCLE. Muscle, it turns out, is the body’s master switch, the gatekeeper for long-term health. Doctors now believe that, next to quitting smoking, the single most important thing adults need to do to live longer, healthier lives is to build strength. The good news is, you can build muscle without exercising – at least in the traditional sense. Thanks to scientifically based strengthbuilding methods, it is now possible to achieve in one 20-minute session what might otherwise require three hours or more a week. The even better news: there’s a place in St. Louis where you can safely build strength this way under the watchful eyes of a staff that includes physical therapists, a registered nurse, exercise physiologists, kinesiologists and professional trainers.
Called 20 Minutes to Fitness, it’s for people of all ages and fitness levels. With locations in Clayton and Chesterfield, it offers a solution that is so efficient, takes so little time and renders such dramatic results, you will stick with it. In all honesty, I remain totally flabbergasted by the results I achieved at 20 Minutes. I lost 20 pounds, went from a size 10 to a 4, grew stronger than I was as a high school cheerleader and with just as much energy. That I also did something that protects my health is, frankly, a side benefit beyond my wildest imagining. If it requires any real measure of discipline, doing the right thing has never been my strong point. Coming into the program, I had merely hoped to get in a little better shape. Instead, it put me in the best shape of my life, like I reversed the aging process. I want to share my success with 20 Minutes because I think it can be an important, healthy, life-changing experience for many kinds of people – those who are too busy to exercise, or think they’re too old, or too out of shape, have too many medical problems, or just plain hate exercising. If that sounds like you, I have just one thing to say: Exercise is
dead. Long live 20 Minutes to Fitness.
Betty Cuniberti, age 50-something
