Resolving Conflicts in Mother-Daughter Relationships

Resolving Conflicts in MOTHER-DAUGHTER Relationships

Mother-daughter relationships are rarely like Gilmore Girls! While many mothers and daughters strive to establish a tight and close bond with one another, some of these relationships become complicated or even toxic. There are many factors that can contribute in complex relationships, such as cultures, values, morals, maturity, behaviors among others. Some of the unhealthy relationships get better with time, others with good communication and listening. Regardless of how close or complicated a relationship is, research shows that relationships play an extremely important role in our self-esteem and our ability to cope with our feelings. Just like any type of relationship, mother-daughter relationships require mutual support, respect, and understanding to develop and mature. And as daughters mature into adulthood, it becomes easier to find means to communicate and listen to one another to find common grounds.

EXPECTATIONS

Culture plays a big role in shaping the relationship between mothers and daughters. In some cultures, daughters are expected to be submissive and obey their mother’s desires, while in others, daughters are expected to leave the house and depend on themselves at an early stage of life. Sometimes these mutually exclusive expectations come into conflict. For instance, a mother might give her daughter the freedom to make her own choices in life but threatens to never see her again if she pursues an opportunity in a different country. And oftentimes these expectations come from a daughter’s beliefs about what her mother should be doing. For instance, a daughter, who never received attention and care from her mother, might expect a better relationship between her mother and the grandchildren. These two examples show that mothers and daughters have difficulties meeting one another’s expectations. However, when daughters mature to adulthood, it becomes easier to establish a relationship that has some limitations. It becomes easier to communicate the things that bother in a mature way. It becomes easier to seek mutual respect by accepting that there are things about the other that you appreciate, and that everyone does mistakes. And it becomes easier to set limitations and offer one another support and understanding.

RESPECT FOR DIFFERENCE

Mothers often fall into the trap of thinking that their daughters should think and feel the same way as they

do, and daughters often fall into the trap of thinking that the differences that they both will build nothing but a wall in their relationship. Yet in adult relationships, differences are often what provide interest because each side realizes that being different does not necessary mean being wrong. People who embark different roads always have interesting stories to tell and preach.

BOUNDARIES

One of the areas that mothers and adult daughters often struggle with has to do with understanding that there are boundaries and limits to be respected. We tend to see both mothers-in-law intervene in how their daughter and son should raise their children, which school to apply to, which sports to participate in, and even which colors to wear! Mothers need to remind themselves that there are boundaries that they must respect, even if they do not agree with them.

COMMUNICATION

Expressing your feelings and talking about the things that upset you is mandatory in any relationship. But how you communicate those feelings is very important. Condemning, judging, disrespecting, and accusing will certainly create walls instead of bridges. Respecting, listening, and understanding, in return, do not only create a stronger connection but also reveal facts and aspects that we never assumed before. Sometimes, knowing someone does not necessarily mean that we do know everything about them and about their past. Talking about these things helps clarify things.

HOROSCOPE

LIFE You’re focused in your learning pursuits, communications projects, and the connections you’re mak- ing with others. You’re looking to nurture your curiosity, connect with others, get out and about, and become more active in your neigh- borhood or with acquaintances. The desire to create something wonderful is strong in the first half of September. Personal appeal and magnetism is powerful, and you can be charmingly forthright, sincere, and straightforward with your requests and communica- tions. People will appreciate your unique style, and you manage to be both assertive and charming. The opportunity to make impres- sive progress with a project, talent, or business idea can arise toward mid-month. Releasing stress through physical or creative activi- ties can be excellent for you now. Keeping some things to yourself while smiling for the camera seems to be what works for you at many points

CAREER You’re likely to enjoy more dynamism and creative expression in your work. You are likable on a professional or public level. You are coming across passionate and focused in career now, and are very noticeable and making a mark. You can be excited about emerg- ing new ideas for long-term plans and projects, or the full details of a plan come together now. In the last week of the month, extra effort behind the scenes can reap rewards. Your curiosity is insatiable at this time, and this could add some stress to your life. It would be wise to slow down a little. Don’t pressure yourself to learn and know everything, or you will end up so scattered and tense that you don’t absorb any particular topic very well. If in job, you are restless with routines, and tend to answer to your own internal rhythm

RELATIONSHIP This can be an important time for releasing a block, forgiving some- one, or moving past a situation that has kept you from moving forward. It’s a green light month in a general sense, even if your heart is a little slower than the rest of you to take off. You might enjoy opportunities to meet special people through long-distance communications, cultural events, higher education, acquaintances, or groups; or you can find pleasure and inspiration through these things. Chances are excellent that you will find a lovely confidante this month, if single, someone to share your daily activi- ties and thoughts with even if this is an online friend or other casual connection. Weeding out what seems now to be superfluous social associations from your life is very likely at this time as you become more serious about what you want, on a personal level, from your life.
