State vet warns against Newcastle Disease The provincial department of agriculture’s veterinary laboratory services have warned poultry farmers, especially racing-pigeon owners, to make sure their birds are vaccinated against the dreaded Newcastle Disease (NCD). Dr Piet Loock, veterinary laboratory services’ manager, issued an urgent press release stating that their Makhado-branch had investigated two reports on an unusual phenomenon around the Alldays/Venetia mine area. Farmers reported great numbers of wild pigeons being affected. The birds appeared to be very lethargic, partly paralysed and died in large

numbers in their roosting places or where they sat on the ground. “One owner remarked that it literally ‘rained pigeons’. Live birds were found on the ground or on the roads and they seemed to be unable to fly away or avoid being run over by cars,” says Loock. Necropsy findings were highly suggestive of Newcastle disease (NCD). The Onderstepoort Veterinary Laboratory confirmed pigeon paramyxovirus (which is Newcastle disease) in samples forwarded to them. “Apart from poultry, NCD can affect other wild birds like pigeons, guinea fowl, pheasants,

partridges, etc. Tame pigeons are also highly susceptible. Many kept-bird species are also susceptible but most just develop sub-clinical infections without any major symptoms. One general exception is cockatiels, which can also die acutely,” says Loock. With the warning that poultry farmers should have their birds vaccinated, Loock also reminded pigeon owners that certain commercial NCD vaccines for pigeons require a mandatory rest period after vaccination. He also kindly requested the public to report any unusual bird deaths to their nearest state veterinarian. (LiN News / Zoutpansberger)

Hierdie gas nie welkom in die Soutpansberg Die Kaapse heuningby het as ‘n onwelkome gas sy intrek geneem in die Soutpansberg-streek. Byeboere in die streek het nou dié nuus aan die groot klok gehang. Ten spyte van talle waarskuwings, sê die boere, is daar sowat vier maande gelede lêende Kaapse werkerbye op die plaas van mnr. Quintin Otto waargeneem. Dié bye is glo afkomstig van besmette korwe uit die suide van Suid-Afrika. Die nuus is nie net onrusbarend vir plaaslike byeboere nie, maar ook vir gewasprodusente, veral dié in die Levubu-vallei. Volgens mnr. Charlie Gerber, wat die griewe gelug het namens al die kontrei se byeboere, veroorsaak die Kaapse-by die totale ineenstoring van die Afrika-bykolonies in wilde sowel as bestuurde swerms. Dit gebeur gewoonlik, verduidelik Gerber, wanneer die Kaapse by se werkers by ‘n Afrikaswerm intrek. Omdat die Kaapse werkerby kan eiers lê, het dit die gevolg dat die Afrika-by sy eie koningin sal doodmaak en die Kaapse by as sy nuwe koningin aanvaar.

Ongelukkig kan die nuwe “vals” koningin nie die swerm in stand hou nie en dit het tot gevolg dat die Afrika-swerm geleidelik uitsterf en net die Kaapse bye oorbly. Hierdie swerm infiltreer ander gesonde swerms en sit so die bose kringloop voort, totdat daar wening Afrika-bye oor is. Maar ‘n by is tog ‘n by en sal steeds sy omgewing bestuif, of hoe? Gerber sê nie noodwendig nie. Die Kaapse by is glad nie aangepas om te aard in die noordelike dele van Suider-Afrika nie. Die bye sal dus ook later uitsterf en daar sal geen bye wees vir bestuiwing óf heuningproduksie nie. Gerber, en ander byeboere, het ‘n beroep gedoen op die samewerking van gewasboere in die omgewing om die omvang van die besmetting te bepaal. “Ons moet die omvang van ons probleem kan bepaal, sodat ons voorsorg kan tref om die besmetting te probeer stuit,” het Gerber gesê. Tans, sê Gerber, maak die meeste boere in die omgewing gratis gebruik van byeboere se dienste. Daar is egter van die plaaslike boere wat

byeboere van elders af huur en sodoende word Kaapse besmette swerms in die streek ingebring. “Onskuldige en bedagsame boere gaan nou gestraf word vir die ondeurdagte dade van ander.” Gerber sê die enigste manier om die besmetting te voorkom, is om soveel moontlik van die besmette swerms op te spoor en te vernietig. ‘n Vinnige toets wat boere kan doen om te bepaal of hulle swerms besmet is, is om tweeweekliks kaste na te gaan. Kaapse werkerbye is byvoorbeeld geheel en al swart, terwyl die Afrika-by geel en swart is. Op die heuningkoek self, sal boere opmerk dat nie al die “selletjies” gevul is nie en dat die werkerby ‘n klompie eiers in die selletjie lê. Die Afrika-by se koningin lê net een eier per selletjie. spuitprogramme teen stinkbesies volgens voorskrif uitvoer, sê Nortjé. Nelspruit het nog las van die kokosneutbesie, maar aandag word hieraan geskenk. Tzaneen se avo-oes nader sy einde en behoort teen September afgehandel te wees, terwyl streke nader aan die kus nog tot November sal pluk.

Avoprodusente sien uit na ‘n uitstekende oes van meer as 11 miljoen kartonne, ondanks die feit dat 2013 ‘n sogenaamde “af-jaar” is. Laasjaar het 12,57 miljoen kartonne gelewer en is as ‘n baie goeie opbrengs beskou. Dit is veral die Tzaneen-, Levubustreek wat ‘n puik drag lewer, met KwaZulu Natal wat ‘n verswakking van tot 50% op plekke aandui. Die verskil tussen die goeie en af jare, soos dit in die bedryf bekend is, raak al kleiner, sê mnr Gerhard Nortjé, tegniese adviseur van Subtrop in Tzaneen. Dit word beskou as ‘n pluimpie vir navorsingsresultate op avokado’s wat jaarliks miljoene rande beloop. “Dit kan ook toegeskryf word aan faktore soos beter bemestingsprogramme,

It’s a braai Lifestyle Thick sirloin steaks on the braai

Beer can chicken

With a herb board and pan-fried potatoes. Prep-time: 20 min | Cooking time: 30 min

Ingredients • 600g well-aged, free-range sirloin steak • with no more than 1cm fat - fat scored in a criss-cross pattern • sea salt and pepper • For the herb board: • as much variety as you can lay your hands on - coarsly chopped • 1 Tbs finely chopped red chilli • Juice and rind of a large lemon

• salt and pepper • lots of olive oil • balsamic vinegar • For the pan-fried potatoes: • 4 medium potatoes - skin on, cut into chunks • olive oil • 6 garlic cloves in their skins • 1 sprig rosemary

Prep-time: 10 mins | Cooking time: 45 mins

Method

Ingredients

For the braai: Prepare a good bed of hot coals in a barbecue. Season the sirloin by rubbing it with sea salt, freshly ground pepper and olive oil. Place on the grid, fat side down and at least 30cm above the coals for a good 10 minutes to render the fat. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t blacken, pulling it away from the heat a little if necessary. To make the potatoes: You can do this slightly ahead of time. Parboil the potato in salted water for 10 minutes. Heat olive oil in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Drain the potatoes and throw into the pan. Add the garlic. Toss until well browned on all sides. Scrape the leaves from the rosemary sprig into the pan, add salt and pepper and drain out the oil, leaving the potatoes in the warm pan while the meat cooks. Prepare the herb board: Toss together all the ingredients. Set aside on a large board. Back to the braai: Once you’ve rendered the fat, lower the grid right over the coals and cook your meat on all sides, turning frequently. I strongly recommend rare or medium rare, which means it’ll require a total cooking time of about 15 minutes. Whatever you do, it is important to place the meat on top of the prepared herb board to rest for 7 to 8 minutes. To serve: Warm up the potatoes. Once the steak has rested, use a very sharp knife to slice it into thin slices. Rub the meat into the herbs, turn over and drizzle with a good amount of olive oil and drops of balsamic vinegar. Serve with the delicious sautéed potatoes.

This chicken is best done on a Weber, but can also be done on an open fire. Mix the honey, soya sauce, ginger and mustard together and cover the chicken in the marinade. It is best to let it sit overnight or a few hours. Drink half of the beer and place the chicken on top it, standing up on the coals. Close the lid of the Weber and braai over a medium to high heat for about 1 hour. Do not worry if the thighs appear pink. This is often the smoking that occurs and turns the flesh this colour. If you are braaing over an open grill, the chicken will take a little longer. * Because the chicken is perched on top of the can, the skin crisps all the way around and the juices flow down into the breasts. You will be amazed at how juicy and tender the meat is. You can use any marinade you wish.

Bolwurm kry sy biologiese moses Bolwurm is een van die groot landbouplae in Afrika wat ‘n enorme hap uit die jaarlikse voedselproduksie wegknaag. In Suid-Afrika is dit veral sitrus, mielies, graan en groentegewasse wat deurloop as doeltreffende beheer nie betyds toegepas word nie. Die groot verskeidenheid gasheerplante bring mee dat die Afrika-bolwurm (Helicoverpa armigera) omvattende “gasvryheid” geniet. Die volwasse insek is ‘n onbeduidende mot met bruin vlerke wat deur die helder kleure van blomme gelok word. Die wyfiemot leef net ‘n week of twee, maar paar binne vier dae en lê honderde eiers aan die onderkant van blare. Die eiers broei binne drie tot agt dae uit na gelang van die temperatuur. Hoë hittegrade bespoedig die siklus. Die larwes vreet eers hul eierskille op en

vaar dan in die gasheerplant se sade en vrugte. Hulle kan tot vyftig dae leef en kruip dan grond toe om papies te vorm. Die papies oorwinter in koue tye, maar in warmer toestande kan die motstadium binne twee weke bereik word. Bestryding van bolwurm deur sintetiese insekdoders word bemoeilik omdat die larwes heelwat beskutting geniet. Dit kruip in vrugsetsels en onkruiddoders met ‘n kortstondige uitwerking word toegedien omdat besmette plante se vrugte of sade meestal na aan oestyd is. ‘n Biologiese beheermiddel is deur die maatskappy River Bioscience in die OosKaap ontwikkel wat ‘n doeltreffende teenvoeter vir die bolwurmplaag is. Dit is ‘n virusdraende middel met die naam Helicovir wat net aktief teen bolwurmlarwes is en geen uitwerking op voordelige of ander insekte op plante het nie. Dit is ook nie skadelik vir bye, voëls of die natuurlewe nie en is verenigbaar met enige geintegreerde plaagbestuursprogram. Behandelde gewasse kan kort na toediening geoes word. Dit is reeds vir gebruik op sitrus in SA geregistreer en proewe word ook op gewasse soos katoen, tamaties, rissies en sorghum gedoen waarvoor registrasie binnekort moontlik is.

‘n Betreklike nuwe vleiswinkel met ‘n wilde tintel pryk langs die Tzaneen-pad net duskant Modjadjiskloof. Sy naam trek al diep in die Laeveld rond. Jagdrif Slaghuis het in ‘n kort tydperk bekend geword vir sy hantering van wildsvleis, die groot hompe biltong en van die smaaklikste droewors in Limpopo. Mnr Francois Bronkhorst is die eienaar, maar eintlik is dit ‘n egte familiesaak waarin minstens ses

lede betrokke is. Elkeen sit hand by om die besigheid te laat floreer. Bronkhorst is al sedert sy tienerjare in die vleisbedryf en hy is ‘n jagter in murg en been. Hy het, soos sy pa, in die slaghuisbedryf grootgeword en vir lank die vleisafdelings van groot winkelgroepe hanteer voor hy so drie jaar gelede ‘n klein slaghuis in Mooketsi geopen het. Dit was bekend as Jachtdrift Slaghuis, waar hy en sy seun, Francois jr, hulle hoofsaaklik op wildsvleis toegespits het. Hulle het verlede jaar na die nuwe perseel verhuis en die naam na Jagdrif verander, maar nie aan hul goeie reputasie nie. Saam met hulle in die slagbedryf is Francois se vrou, Mariana, wat ook aan die meelhandelaar Progress Milling langs die slaghuis verbonde is. Francois jr se vrou, Tammy, en haar ma, me Tracy Smith, is ook deel van die span en bedryf ‘n gelisensieerde restaurant saam met die slaghuis. Nadia,nog ‘n dogter van Bronkhorst sr, is verbonde aan die Hoerskool Merensky, maar in haar vrye tyd is sy ook by die gesin se vleisbedryf betrokke. Haar man, Arno, hanteer Progress Milling en is die eienaar van die restaurant se dranklisensie. Die jongste dogter in die familie, Amor, studier nog in Pretoria. Bronkhorst se liefde vir jag het eintlik die onderneming aan die gang gesit. Hy het jare vir die Spar-groep as vleismeester gewerk en moes vragte vol wild vir die winkelgroep op erkende wildplase skiet.

“Nou is dit my seun se beurt. Hy het onlangs as beroepsjagter gekwalifiseer en sal nou die meeste van die skietwerk doen.” Die slaghuis het ‘n koelkamer van vyf meter lank, gevul met wildvleis wat vir klante verwerk moet word. “Ons werk hard, maar die koelkamer bly vol. Ons kry wild van sover as Musina en is dwarsdeur die jaar vol.” Nog ‘n lid van die span is me Fransie van der Lith, ‘n ervare hand in die vleisbedryf. Sy was vir jare in ‘n slaghuis in Gravelotte. Daarna was sy ‘n steunpilaar in Maronet Slaghuis in Tzaneen en toe by Biltong en Braai voor Jagdrif haar dienste ingespan het. Haar groot geheim is ‘n onverbeterlike melktertresep. Dit kan mense eersdaags in die restaurant op die proef gaan stel. Tracy Smith het spesiaal van Mosselbaai hierheen verhuis om haar dogter met die restaurant by te staan. Benewens ‘n spyskaart vir ligte en middelslag etes beplan hulle ook spesiale aanbiedinge, soos byvoorbeeld beesstertpotjie of ander sappige geregte op ‘n Saterdag. Hulle beplan ook kinderpartytjies vir die restaurantgedeelte van die slaghuis. Handelsure by Jagdrif Slaghuis 08:00 soggens tot 18:00 saans. Saterdae is hulle tot 14:00 oop.

Best Female Farmer Award “Farming is not just a job but a calling to serve the community around you,” says Ms Maria Mabunda, winner of the Best Female Farmer of the year 2012 award in Giyani municipality. But this was their home, a work place which is very convenient for them because they don’t have to travel far to get to work,” she said. “I therefore would like to appeal to the government that when they come with their tractors to plough our farms, they shouldn’t just plough one hectar and go, because it is too small considering the fact that we’re not just farming for our families, but we’re helping other people as well,” she said. Meanwhile this year’s Best Female Farmer award went to Ms Tanani Matiku Disable and the Multipurpose farming project. The project is led by 11 blind and disabled women who farm chickens and sell to their local communities and other small businesses in Giyani. It got position one in the category of Top Entrepreneur of Small

business holder in the farming sector. Other winners were Masingita Mabunda, who got position one in the category of the Best Subsistence Producer in the farming sector, followed by Betty Ngoveni who got position one in the category of Best Female Worker in the farming sector. All the winners who reached position one received a trophy and R4000 prize, while those in positions two and three received R3000 and R2000 respectively. Meanwhile the acting mayor, Ms Tintswalo Baloyi said

the dedications shown by the female farmers in helping the society through food security proved that they were the remnants of the 1956 class when women such as Helen Suzman, Lillian Ngoyi and others took a stand against oppressive laws. “It is this kind of selfless approach by brave mothers of that time that forced the hand of the apartheid regime to comply and ultimately led to its demise,” she said, congratulating all the women farmers who received the farming awards.

Environmental risk threatens Africa’s agriculture The African continent offers a wide a variety of opportunities in agriculture but exploiting these fully requires infrastructure that keeps pace with population growth and a knowledge based economy – and that reduces dependence on foreign companies and outsiders. This is according to Mr Omri van Zyl from professional services firm Deloitte, who focuses on agriculture on the continent. Van Zyl was speaking in a panel discussion at the Africa Risk Conference, held in Johannesburg. The panel also pointed out that the African continent’s status as a global hub of food security is severely threatened by climate change and the emergence of mega cities. Africa’s status as a key source of global food supply is well recognised. The continent is home to 60% of the world’s remaining arable land and still has the lowest use of fertiliser per hectare, which makes it more favourable for use. This has sparked what has become

known as ‘the second scramble’ as governments from regions such as the Middle East use rented land in African countries to feed their own populations. This phenomenon has been criticised in instances where the host country produces entirely for export and cannot meet the needs of its own country. “One of the most important things that is lacking in agriculture on the continent is infrastructure that keeps pace with population growth and development needs,” says van Zyl. He cites water storage infrastructure as an example. If a country does not have adequate water storage capacity, it does not have any remedy in the event of a drought, which means farmers suffer massive losses in lost production potential. But climate change poses the greatest danger to agriculture. A recent World Bank report states that a two degree rise in average temperature can wipe out between 40% and 80% of land used for planting staples like maize and sorghum, two crucial staples on the continent.

The emergence of mega cities was also cited as a threat to global food supply. These are cities with more than 20 million residents. While such cities are currently evenly spread between the developing and developed world, in the next two decades, most mega cities will be in what are today considered developing countries. This will place pressure on food production, infrastructure and, ultimately, prices. Van Zyl points out that business now recognises environmental risk as a direct threat to parts of their operations. And it is not just farmers who recognise this threat. Fast moving Consumer Goods suppliers and retailers are among business that see environmental risk as a threat to their supply chain. Thus a UK based retailer now has direct engagement with wine farmers in the Western Cape who face restrictive water

supply to ensure that they have ways to mitigate against this threat and thus be able to continue supplying wine. Van Zyl concludes by noting that for African agriculture, knowledge is power. “A strong underlying factor is that Africa does not have a knowledge economy,” he says. A knowledge economy would allow the continent to harness intellectual property and technology, which requires a strong education system and can create institutional memory. This will also avoid any other knowledge economy from taking advantage of the resources available in Africa and allow Africa to capitalise on its own resources. Without that, van Zyl says, African agriculture will be at the mercy of foreign companies and countries looking for a return or to feed their populations without meeting the needs of their communities.

Makadamias lewer blink oes vanjaar Makadamiaprodusente in SA lag vanjaar al die pad bank toe, danksy ‘n puik oes en die wisselkoers wat die buitelandse prys vir die neute laat blink. Die opbrengs is min of meer gelyk met die van verlede jaar. Tzaneen mik na 2 000 ton, vergeleke met 1 880 ton in die vorige seisoen, terwyl ‘n daling van tussen 20 – 25% in die Levubustreek verwag word. Die grootste deel van die oes is gelewer en

sal oor sowat ‘n maand afgehandel wees. Mnr Graham Taylor, verwerkingsbestuurder by Tzamac, waar Tzaneen se makadamias vir uitvoer hanteer word, reken met die gunstige buitelandse prys word feitlik alle beskikbare neute uitgevoer. Die pryse is die beste in die afgelope agt jaar in ‘n bedryf wat nog in sy kinderskoene staan. ‘n Groter makadamiaoes word volgende jaar verwag, wanneer

nuwe aanplantings van vyf en ses jaar gelede in volle drag kom. Produsente plant jaarliks nuwe boorde aan en vervang selfs ander subtropiese vrugteboorde met makadamias weens die groot vertroue wat in die bedryf geskep is. Die eerste verwerkingsaanleg is reeds in 1991 in Hazyview gestig, gevolg deur nog een in Levubu die jaar daarna. Vandag bestaan verskeie aanlegte, met een van

die grootste produsente,The Green Farms Nut Co, wat saam met Australiese vennote die grootste deel van die uitvoermark hanteer. Suid-Afrika en Australie lewer 55% van die wereld se makadamias. Verlede jaar se wereldproduksie was 135 000 ton met ‘n omset van R4,4 miljard. Hiervan was 34 000 ton uit Suid-Afrika met ‘n waarde van ‘n miljard rand.
