Laeveld se gaafste gogga Witluis is een van die sitrusboer se grootste vyande, maar die plaag het self ‘n vyand wat deur entomoloë beskou word as die vriendelikste gogga in die Laeveld. Dis ‘n klein wesp met die indrukwekkende naam Coccidoxenoides perminutus. Hy kom oorspronklik uit Hawaii, maar het reeds wêreldwyd versprei as ‘n aanwins vir sitrus- en wynboere. Die witluisplaag teister sitrusprodusente al jare lank en uitvoerpunte soos die Europese Unie sit reeds groot-oog en kyk na dié verskynsel. Die biologiese parasiete, kortliks bekend as Cocci’s, is klein swart wespe van net drie sentimeter lank en met die blote oog waarneembaar. Die wyfies lê hul eiers binne die eerste drie instars (tye van vervelling) in die witluis en kan tot negentig eiers op ‘n slag produseer. Die eiers ontwikkel in papies en voed op die gasheer tot dié uiteindelik vrek. Na sestien dae van eierstadium kom volwasse Cocci’s na vore en is dadelik gereed om te paar en die siklus aan die gang te hou. Die aanteelsnelheid word deur temperatuur en vogtigheid bepaal, soos in temperature van tussen 20° C en 30° C en humiditeit van 50% tot 90%. Volgens Du Roi IPM (Integrated Pest Management) in Letsitele is die loslating van C. perminutus in die lende en vroeë somer voor die witluisgetalle onaanvaarbaar hoog word. Wanneer die besmetting 5% tot 10% is, kan die

Zander kan Limpopo laat wen Die AgriSA Toyota Jongboer van die Jaar word vanaand by ‘n glansgeleentheid in Pretoria gekroon, waar die room van SA se jong boere teen mekaar opgeweeg word. Mnr Zander Ernst van die Allesbeste-boerdery by Tzaneen staan ‘n baie goeie kans om in die nasionale kompetisie met die louere weg te stap, meen AgriLimpopo se hoof- uitvoerende beampte, mnr Willem van Jaarsveld. Wat ook al die uitslag gaan wees, kan landbou in SA gerus kennis neem van dié Limpopo-kandidaat se vaardighede. Ernst se passie vir ontwikkeling en opheffing van die mense in sy diens en sy gemeenskap, sy fokus op navorsing en sy noukeurige bestuurstyl maak van hom ‘n gedugte mededinger in dié kompetisie. Zander het in 2009 by sy pa, Dr André Ernst, en sy broer, Edrean, op die plaas as deel van die direksie van Allesbeste kom aansluit. Hy moes kies waar hy betrokke wou raak en het sommer dadelik die Allesbeste-padstal gekies — hy het immers ‘n honneursgraad in bemarking. Daarmee saam was die piesangboorde, destyds die stiefkind van die boerdery, sy verantwoordelikheid. Met boorde van tussen 30 en 35 jaar oud, was die piesangboerdery maar ‘n verliesbesigheid. Die gedagte was dat dit bestuur moes word totdat al die bloekomplantasies vervang is met avokado’s, ‘n proses wat sy pa begin het, en dan sou die piesangs ook vir avo’s moes plek maak. Hy wou minstens gelykbreek met die piesangs en so die druk op die avo-afdeling verlig. Hy het begin rondbel en navrae gerig oor afsetpunte vir die piesangs. Een van die nuwe afsetpunte wat hy geïdentifiseer het was Freshmark, wat varsprodukte aan Shoprite/Checkers lewer. Sy doel was om so ‘n derde van sy eerstegraad piesangs aan Freshmark te lewer en dan alles behalwe dit waarvoor hy bestellings het, op die munisipale mark te lewer. “Verder het ek pryse noukeurig dopgehou en die verhoudings van dié lewerings aangepas om inkomste te optimaliseer.” Dit was ‘n eenvoudige bestuursbesluit, maar het gesorg dat die piesangboerdery die eerste jaar onder Zander se bestuur gelyk gebreek het. ‘n Hervestigingplan wat behels dat 10% van die piesangboorde per jaar vervang word, is van stapel gestuur om te verseker dat al die piesangblokke na tien jaar herplant sal wees, om optimale produksie te verseker. Deesdae sien hy om na die hele produksiekompo-

nent van die boerdery. Soggens vergader hy eers met hul twee plaasbestuurders — die piesangbestuurder en die besproeiïngsbestuurder — om die dagtake en projekbestuur te bespreek. Edrean sien om na die tegnologiese behoeftes, voldoening aan arbeidswetgewing en stelsels. Dr Ernst is die uitvoerende hoof en sy fokus is tans op die kwekery en die internasionale registrasie van die Maluma-kultivar onder planttelersregte. Edrean, ‘n landbou-ekonoom, het nog altyd ‘n liefde vir tegnologie gehad. Toe hy twee jaar voor Zander plaas toe gekom het, het hy eers ‘n program vir die kwekery geskryf wat rekordkening hou van elke detail wat sy pa nodig het; en daarna het hy ‘n program begin ontwikkel wat geleidelik die boerdery se behoeftes een vir een onder die loep geneem het. Zander glo produktiwiteit en produksie is die belangrikste bestuursaspekte waarop ‘n boer moet fokus. Dit het hy by die Van Zyl’s van ZZ2 geleer, getuig hy. Om by ander boere te leer, is een van die hoekstene waarop Zander sy sukses bou. As lid van die SA Avokwekersvereniging, Subtrop en die Letaba Avokado studiegroep gebruik hy elke geleentheid om by sy mede-boere te leer. Hy skroom ook nie om sy kennis met ander boere te deel nie. Daarom het hy en twee ander boere vroeër vanjaar ‘n piesangstudiegroep vir die Tzaneen-omgewing op die been gebring. Hy dien ook in die landbou-praktiese komitee van die Hoërskool Merensky, waar hy besig is met ‘n projek wat skoolkinders die geleentheid gaan bied om navorsing op die plaas te kom doen. Party leerlinge kan by die snoeinavorsing betrokke raak en ander kan die resultate van Zander se hoëdigtheid en ultra-hoëdigtheid avokado-aanplantings monitor. “Ek wil die skool se landboupraktiese en navorsings-

Nou kan arbeidskoste net soos ander insette by die kostestruktuur van ‘n boord ingereken en vergelyk word. Die data uit die tabelle word ook gebruik om standaarde en teikens vir verskillende take in verskillende boorde te bepaal en op grond daarvan verdien werkers bonusse. Zander se plaasbestuurders is werkers wat oor die jare opgelei is om op bestuursvlak in te skakel; ‘n proses wat sy pa reeds in 1996 begin het. Hulle verdien markverwante salarisse. Hy droom ook van beter grondhervormingpraktyke — soos om eendag ‘n plaas te kan koop wat die werkers geleidelik kan oorneem, en dus grondeienaars kan word wat goed opgelei is vir die werk. Hoewel grondeise landbou in ‘n somber lig plaas, glo hy daar is ‘n blink toekoms en wil hy dit graag deel met die mense wat bereid is om daarvoor te werk. “Ek is nogal ‘n ou wat glo jy moet ‘n lekker gevoel in jou hart hê, en om iemand se harde werk raak te sien en te beloon is vir my baie bevredigend.” — Jasper Raats/LN Media

Mnr Paul Bester, die hoofbestuurder van Grootboom, sê daar is genoeg trekkers om na die res van die plaas om te sien, maar die osse en donkie het ‘n groot kalmte na die werf teruggebring. Die twee Pinzgauer-osse is blink van die gesondheid, want hulle kry gereelde oefening en aandag. Subtrop supports World Food Day Subtrop of Tzaneen was instrumental on World Food Day on 16 October, held in Malale Village in Vhembe, to commemorate the launch of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN in 1945. FAO is the world’s agricultural knowledge agency which provides policy and technical assistance to countries to help promote food security, nutrition and agriculture development. A team of Subtrop delegates attended the World Food Day in support of the Minister of Agriculture’s goal to celebrate the international day of rural women and eradication of poverty. ZZ2 farms made a generous contribution of tomatoes towards the event,

supporting the community of Malale Village. It was attended by high ranking national and provincial government officials, including Min Senzeni Zokwana, his deputy, Mr Bheki Cele, Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha, together with local mayors and traditional leaders. The Subtrop delegates had a brief discussion with the Minister about the subtropical industry’s way forward in working together with government. The day ended on a high note with the introduction of new agricultural Brand Ambassadors, who made their first public pledge in support of agriculture nationwide under “feeding the world, caring for the earth” theme.

Hot and humid works for parrots Posing for the camera — African Greys can live up to sixty years and are popular birds to be kept as pets.

So it turns out that the heat and humidity that make Hoedspruiters scamper for airconditioned indoors in summer, is exactly what parrots thrive on. Native to the Congo and South America, Mr Jaco Leicester’s African Grey and Amazon parrots go into a breeding frenzy during a humid thunderstorm and will carry on all night long! With only two years’ experience in breeding parrots, Leicester and his business partner, Mr Frans Louw, already seem to have a handle on the winning recipe. ‘We have bought out many small breeders who never had success but within the first season the birds are in Hoedspruit they breed and raise chicks’ says Leicester. His manager, Mr Altus Oelofse, adds that hygiene plays an important role in their success. ‘We spray disinfectant weekly and thoroughly clean the cages once a month’. “Each breeder has a different set-up but if the birds breed and raise chicks, it really doesn’t matter how you do it” Ms Jesca Nunyuki takes special care with each and every baby parrot she cares for in the ‘baby room’ until the birds are exported when ten weeks old.

With 800 pairs of African Greys and 42 pairs of Amazons, Leicester says that about half the birds are just ‘passengers’ and don’t breed. “Exchanging the mates has proved to be successful though”, says Oelofse. Both Amazons and African Greys lay between one and four eggs. After two weeks you can tell whether the egg has been fertilized or not by shining a light through it. If you can see little red veins, the egg has been fertilised. The incubation period is 21 days and the chicks stay with their parents until they are five weeks old. Thereafter they are moved to the ‘baby room’ where Ms Jesca Nunyuki feeds and cares for them. Here they listen to the radio all day long. Normally they are quiet but as soon as strangers enter the room they kick up a huge racket at the intrusion! At ten weeks the birds are exported, mainly to the Middle East. Jaco says their ‘claim to fame’ is that they breed pets — birds that are used to humans and can be handled with ease. to their hearts’ content. We also give them more food and they become really beautiful during their time off ”, says Oelofse. “But they only get leave if they’ve done the deed and produced chicks! Otherwise they have to stay at it,” says Leicester with a chuckle. Sexing parrots is not a straightforward task at all. An experienced bird veterinarian has to anesthetize each individual bird and, with a probe, determine the sex internally. Once he knows the sex, he injects ink into the skin under the wing (males right, females left) to make a kind of tattoo to show what sex the bird is. The birds are also ringed (males right, females left). Although the birds thrive on heat and humidity, the embryos die if temperatures exceed 32°C. To prevent this from happening, sprinklers are used to wet the roofs of the cages. Air vents low down along the walls and at the top of the walls ensure that cool air is sucked in and hot air escapes at the top. Besides the challenge of getting all the birds to breed, Oelofse says that they have had to come up with some clever plans to keep out rats, snakes and monitors. ‘The rats are the biggest problem because they defecate in the birds’ food and then the birds become sick’. Electrified wires on the outside wall mostly prevent these animals from gaining access through the roof. Boere moeg vir ploeg Die toename in landbou se arbeidskoste is reeds besig om ‘n kloof tussen kosproduksie en die volhoubaarheid van grondbesit in Limpopo te weerspieël. Al meer kosproduserende plase word deesdae na wildplase omgeskakel. Dit word onder meer weerspieël in die provinsie se trekkermark, waar ‘n duidelike afname die afgelope twee maande ondervind is. Benewens private kopers wat sku geraak het, het die departement van handel en nywerheid (DTI) ook sy hand vir die verskaffing van trekkers aan begunstigde boere begin toeknyp. Mnr Frikkie van Vuuren, die bestuurder van NTK in Tzaneen, sê groot bedrywe soos soja, mielies en ander bone groei danksy meganisasie, maar groenteproduksie krimp. Daar is dele in die ooste van Limpopo wat vanjaar goeie reën gehad het, maar die produksie het vermoedelik weens arbeidskoste gedaal.

Hy sê selfs beesboerderye is intussen na wildboerdery omskakel, om die arbeidkwessie te omseil. Dit is ook in nuwe aanplantings van piesangs, lietsjies en macadamias opgemerk. “Piesangprodusente in Mosambiek kan nou ‘n krat piesangs teen R40 hier bemark, wat gelykstaande is aan die plaaslike produsenteprys voor winsneming.” Hy sê saadverskaffers het ook reeds te kenne gegee dat bestellings ‘n daling toon, terwyl groentepryse op die meeste markte weens verminderde produksie styg. Prysoorloë is aan die woed en trekkers word soms vir tot 30% minder per eenheid verkoop.

Skills development is a priority The development of skills and a higher level of quality workmanship has become a standard procedure in ensuring better productivity levels in agriculture, says Mr Wickus Viljoen, branch manager at Training Force in Phalaborwa. Training Force is a well-known company, providing training programmes across South Africa for the past fifteen years. The Phalaborwa branch is in operation for the past four and a half years and has made a considerable impact on skills development in the area. They have moved to bigger premises this year to add training facilities such as construction, welding and computer training to the rest of their programmes. According to Viljoen all training programmes are aligned with SA Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accredited with SETA Quality Assurance departments. They are also accredited with MERSETA (engineering and manufacturing), CETA (construction), SSETA (services), TETA (transport), CATHSSETA (hospitality) and Umalusi. They have membership of the SA Civil Engineering Contractors and the Construction Plant Hire Association, which provide them with direct links to the industries. They specialize in SETA accredited training programmes in transport (forklift, overhead crane, tractor, ADT and TLB), engineering (welding, gas cutting, power tools) and construction (bricklaying, plumbing, plastering). SA is grootste uitvoerder van vrugte Suid-Afrika staan steeds sterk in die Suidelike Halfrond wat die uitvoer van vrugte betref en beklee die eerste plek met 34% in volume. Chile is tweede met 33%, maar in waarde staan hy op 43%, wat beteken dat Chile se uitvoere hoër in waarde is as dié van Suid-Afrika. Die vereniging van varsvrugte-uitvoerders in die Suidelike Halfrond (SHAFFE) het dié maand in Kalifornië, byeengekom, om die moontlikhede van ‘n groter mark in Asië te bespreek. Die afgelope tien jaar het uitvoere na Asië reeds met 8,2% toegeneem, teenoor ‘n wêreldwye toename van 5.5% van SHAFFE-produkte. Al die lidlande het die afgelope tyd hoër insetkoste ervaar, waarvan arbeid die grootste komponent is. Fitosanitêre vereistes het ook ‘n groter hindernis in uitvoere geword. Weersomstandighede het sekere lande benadeel, soos ernstige droogte in Argentinië wat suurlemoenproduksie met vyftig persent laat daal het. Verlede jaar het Chile die ergste vriestoestande in vyftig jaar gehad. Die SHAFFE-lidlande is Suid-Afrika, Chile, Argentinië, Peru, NieuSeeland, Australië en Uruguay.

Soos enige ander boerdery bied die wildbedryf ook verskeie uitdagings. Hy vertel hy skakel grootliks die gevaar van predatore uit deur die diere in kampe te hou, maar dat niks ‘n dier keer om in ‘n draad vas te hardloop en sy nek te breek nie — en dan verloor jy groot geld. ‘n Ander uitdaging is natuurlik peste en plae, maar dié word beheer deur siek diere betyds te behandel. Qashqai will grow in numbers More than two million vehicle owners around the world are driving the Nissan Qashqai, and at least 20 000 of them are in South Africa. With the release of the second generation of this compact crossover it is expected to grow even faster in numbers. The new Qashqai is redesigned from the ground up and the finished product is longer, wider, lower and lighter than before.
