Dr Doug Reed is no stranger to Tzaneen and surrounds. Born and raised on Mooihoek Farm, Mooketsi, the farm has been in the family since 1892, with Doug being the 4th generation farmer on the same land in Mooketsi. His love for animals became evident from an early age which lead to him choosing to study Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort after completing high school at Capricorn High in Polokwane. Upon completion of his degree he worked in private practice for one year at Tzaneen Animal Clinic before being called up for the mandatory 2 years army duty, which he completed as a veterinarian in the Lebowa area being in charge of animal health and offering free veterinary services to the local communities. It is during this period that the hardy, low-maintenance Nguni cattle caught his attention. With his army salary, Doug procured a couple of Nguni’s every month, but his father hadn’t bought into the idea of the Nguni’s yet and refused that the rural cattle graze amongst his more sophisticated Brahman in fear of diseases that they might contract. Doug utilized a piece of land next to the gi-

ant baobab tree on Leeuwdraai, and kept his Nguni’s there, with only natural grazing and water. Only preventative treatment was deworming, and the cattle flourished having a 100% natural, unassisted reproduction rate in the first year. By the end of the second year, Doug’s father saw the advantages of the Nguni’s, and the Reeds sold their entire Brahman stud on auction and converted to Nguni farming. At that time they were considered to be losing the plot by many fellow cattle breeders, but the father and son team were set to prove them all wrong. In 1986 the Nguni’s were formally recognized as a cattle breed, and Doug has been actively involved in the founding of the Nguni Cattle Breeders’ Association maintenance. Nguni’s have grown to become one of the major breeds throughout Southern Africa. In 2015 Doug joined the ranks of ZZ2, and on 1 April this year, he joined the ZZ2 cattle team as Senior Project Manager – Animal Health. He oversees the health management of roughly 6500 head of cattle, which comprises of Pinzgauers, Nguni’s and the PinZ²yls.

The PinZ²yl cattle breed is a uniquely African breed that was developed through a programme over 12 years by ZZ2. The unique breed combines the best attributes of the European-bred Pinzgauer with the indigenous Nguni breed. Not only is it an excellent beef breed, but it has proved itself as a good dairy producer and performs brilliantly in the harsh, unique African conditions. Although ZZ2 was the first to breed the PinZ²yl, a number of upcoming breeders across South Africa have started their own breeding programmes. Doug is mainly involved in the general management of the cattle, but mainly concentrates on the health management side, as a veterinarian and a well seasoned cattle farmer. ZZ2 has also realized the advantage of the pure Nguni breed due to their hardiness, low maintenance, high reproduction rate and resistance to disease, and will be expanding the Nguni section of their current herd in the future, and with the experience and knowledge Doug brings to the table, this is for sure a winning recipe.

Raising the (nut)bar Committed to produce safe, superior quality macadamia nuts, which are packaged in a hygienic environment, Tzamac adheres to stringent health and safety practices to ensure ISO 22 000 compliance, and to meet strict international food production standards. This is achieved by continuous investment in equipment and staff development through training. Their commitment to offer specialized services to their growers, includes but is not limited to batch processing upon delivery, complete analysis of macadamias processed, horticultural crop survey and advice on crop handling. In doing this the standard of the macadamias is ensured from orchards to end-customer, thereby maintaining a world class status. The entire packing line of the Tzamac plant is designed to ensure maximum yield of the macadamias delivered for processing. The state-of-the-art technology, equipment and specialized sorting and packing process result in highest percentage of processed nuts being packed and ready for export. The nut shells harvested during this process is utilized within the plant during the dry-

ing process of the nuts, and ensuring that all their growers adhere to strict Global GAP protocols, Tzamac shows its commitment to limit environmental impact. Tzamac is currently yielding roughly 3000 tons of processed product, but this will increase exponentially over the next 5-7 years as a result of expansion of the plant due to more growers joining Tzamac. Expansion has already commenced and will continue over the years to come. Although it is early in the season, Tzamac is positive that the yields of this year will exceed the yields of the two previous years due to favourable weather conditions. Some of the growers have already mentioned that the macadamia nut size has been impressive in compari-

son to previous years. Tzamac a p p ro a c h e s its business through support and encouragement of good agricultural practices on the land, assisting their growers and investing in their staff, and the investment is paying off. The current and future expansion of the plant is testament to this. Their commitment to the quality of their product from orchard to export has awarded them a well earned place in the global market. Tzamac (Pty) Ltd was established in Tza-

neen in 1996, owned by 3 equal shareholders. The state-of-the-art processing facility is ISO 22 000 accredited to ensure that international standards are adhered to, as the final product is earmarked for the export market.

Land Rover’s 70th Anniversary After 70 years of all-terrain adventures and global expeditions, Land Rover has once again taken the Defender to new heights. Stretching over 250 metres, the most remote Defender outline was imprinted on the side of a mountain in the French Alps. The unique snow art was created to announce World Land Rover Day on 30 April, exactly 70 years since the original Land Rover was first shown to the world at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show. The unique image is a tribute to the moment when the engineering director of Rover, Maurice Wilks, first sketched the shape for the original Land Rover in the sand of Red Wharf Bay and proposed the idea to his brother Spencer, Rover’s managing director. The forward-thinking design was christened the ‘Land Rover’, the

outline of which we now recognise as the Defender. Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Prof Dr Ralf Speth, said: “Land Rover is an iconic brand around the world and the outline of the Defender is instantly recognisable. To reach the landmark of 70 years is truly special and we will mark it with a year of celebrations that represent Land Rover’s ‘Above and Beyond’ spirit and honours the people behind the world’s favourite SUVs.” Land Rover is inviting fans to join the celebrations in a World Land Rover Day online broadcast. It stars the people who helped create the world’s most-loved 4x4s and Land Rover’s pioneering technologies, from its Series Land Rover and Defender origins, to the introduction of the Range Rover in 1970 and Discovery in 1989. Timac AGRO, trusted nutritionalists Timac Agro South Africa is the South African representative of the French based company, Groupe Roullier. Since 1959, Groupe Roullier has been meeting the needs of growers and breeders globally. Timac AGRO South Africa has become an organization that farmers trust for their guidance and expertise in agronomy and animal nutrition, with the core of their business being providing their clients with best possible return on investment, by matching tailor-made solutions to their clients’ agricultural needs, such as specifics relating to their crops, climate, soil composition and water availability. This is achieved by covering the full spectrum of plant and animal nutrition, including single-granule fertilizers with precise agronomic formulas and engineered “specificities” unique to the organization. This their clients can confirm. With clients such as Allesbeste Avocado Nursery and Willamien Roettgers from Campies-

glen, there is definitely proven success in Timac AGRO’s unique approach to matching the exact product with the correct frequency to the unique needs of every client. Allesbeste had Timac’s Fertiactyl GZ added to their nursery on different stages of growth to see if it the product would be beneficial to them. The product increases root development and improves soil exploration whilst improving the feeding capabilities of the plant by mobilizing nutrients in the soil. It promotes the uptake of all elements for improved function of chloroplasts, resulting in improved growth and reserve building. It aids the plant in coping under stress conditions by managing turgor pressure in plant cells whilst strengthening the natural defense system of the plant. The end result was that Ferti-

actyl stimulated the roots to the point that the timeframe of seedling to tree ready for sale was reduced by 2 months. On the macadamia side Willamien Roettgers of Campiesglen came on board. After supplying Timac with her leaf analysis, it was sent to various agri laboratories. Programmes were developed based on the results, and the programme best

suited to Willamien’s agri needs was selected. This programme was followed rigorously with great results. Her A4 macadamia trees were placed on Timac’s D-Coder single-granular fertilizer. Her 2 year 10 month old trees yielded 400kg/ha with 40.84% crackout. D-Coder protects it’s nutriens against leaching, fixation, volatilization and retrogadation. It interprets plant root signals in the form of root exudates and releases its contained nutrients as required by the plant. It amplifies as activity in the rhizosphere is stimulated, improving plant-microbial interaction, organic matter mineralization and nutrient availability whilst maximizing root growth. D-Coder also contains a water-soluble nutrient fraction to supply the demand of initial growth phases. Timac is extremely excited about the results with both Allesbeste and Campiesglen, and the team is looking forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with both these farms.

Strong growth trajectory for macs Valley Macadamia Chairman, Alan Sutton, attended the Macadamia Round Table session at the World Nut and Dried Fruit Conference in Spain. Sutton gave feedback on the INC’s annual report and discussed a number of pertinent facts and figures, as well as new marketing and advertising campaigns proposed for the year ahead. Key statistics discussed at the round table included the growth and global supply of macadamias. Sutton was delighted to report a strong growth trajectory for the robust macadamia industry. “The generic marketing

that’s been undertaken by the INC is an example of our industry body hard at work to perform expansion of our product”, said Sutton. The forecast for 2018 is estimated at 211 101 metric tons worldwide - the highest ever global supply. South Africa will be the biggest macadamia producer with 54 000 tons followed by Australia and Kenya. Production in China will be 19 000 tons in 2018 with a set growth of 10% per annum thereafter. The world production is classified as 70% kernel ex-

ports and 30% nut in shell exports. The kernel and nutin-shell combined make up 70% of all products sold as snack products and 30% sold as ingredients for bakers and confectioners. “The increase in plantings on a global scale is set to continue and hopefully this will stabilise the supply for what is seemingly an insatiable demand for macadamias worldwide”, said Sutton. The Valley Macadamia Group will rise to the challenge by expanding their capacities and market capabilities to cater for the exciting new trends.

doen, was ‘n drywer, ‘n voorman en soos Lebepe sê “’n Jack of all trades”. Hy was ‘n jong man toe hulle kinders was.

Agri SA launches Water Desk On the 3rd of May this year, Agri SA announced that it had formally launched a dedicated Water Desk that will focus on the need to ensure equitable access to water for farmers across South Africa. This initiative is in response to a host of external challenges facing agricultural water users, including severe drought, climate change and under-maintained infrastructure. The situation is all the more urgent given several policy proposals that may simultaneously increase the cost of water while reducing the availability to agricultural users. The Agri SA Water Desk will, amongst other things, focus on water policy and legislative proposals such as the draft National Water and Sanitation Master Plan and the National Water Resource Strategy. The current

amendments to the National Water Act, for example, will determine the cost of water for agricultural users, which is why it is necessary to engage with government and other key stakeholders from the start to work towards a fair outcome. The Agri SA Water Desk will also give inputs to the Water Research Commission (WRC) on research priorities and will act as a forum for top water experts to share their insights in a meaningful way. The Agri SA Water Desk will be led by Janse Rabie, an environmental lawyer and Head of Agri SA’s Natural Resources Centre of Excellence and Gregory Smith, a water scientist. “The Agri SA Water Desk will be a one-stop-shop for Agri SA members, where they can get up to date information and advice on all things water-related,” said Janse

Rabie. “Given the complexity of water rights and the fastchanging policy environment, we believe that a dedicated Water Desk is the best way to enable agricultural water users to stay abreast of all legal developments which will have an impact on the way they farm and do business.” “Agri SA is at the forefront of legislative and policy development regarding the water sector in South Africa. Agri SA strives to support government in this fundamental area through collaboration with key stakeholders and timely and well-researched inputs to policy development,” said Dan Kriek, President of Agri SA. Agri SA invites its members, and interested parties, to contact the Agri SA Water Desk to find out how they can get involved.

bestandheid teen Bakteriese verwelk.
