Vlieg praat met die Volk en krap waar dit jeuk...
Net soos, hopelik, ‘n paar ander ouens — waarskynlik ook enersdenkende andersdenkendes — wonder Vlieg ook soms oor die Groot Vraag en die Groot Antwoord. Dit het natuurlik nou niks te make met Frik Flora en die Vraag?, of Yolandi Vi$$er en Ninja se Antwoord nie. Vir hulle is Vlieg op die oomblik ‘n bietjie vies omdat hulle dink Lady Gaga is kommin en eerder saam met Celine Dion wil optree. Vlieg het hoë ontsag vir Lady Gaga en laat haar nie sommer deur enige pastorieflerrie beledig nie. Eerder die Groot Vraag en die Groot Antwoord oor die lewe, die heelal en alles. En terwyl Vlieg so wonder, wonder hy of hy reg wonder dat ons samelewing tans ‘n bietjie, of dalk eerder baie, wanaangepas voorkom en as Vlieg se waarneming korrek is, wat dan die moontlike oorsaak daarvan kan wees. En midde in hierdie gewonder verskyn die antwoord aan Vlieg, asof in ‘n visioen: Vrees! Inderdaad. Ons is bang, met vrees gevul, daarom dat ons so wanaangepas is. Behalwe Vlieg, natuurlik. Hy is bang vir niks en natuurlik heel goed aangepas, dankie. Met verdere dieper gewonder besef Vlieg toe dat vrees ‘n selfs dieper gewortelde instinktiewe emosie is wat vanaf die wieg tot die graf in ons vasgelê word.

Weens dié gewaarwording, en vanweë die teoloë se hernude twis met die nuutste nuwe vertaling van die Bybel oor of dit nou Seun van God is met ‘n hoofletter of seun van God met ‘n kleinletter, wil Vlieg graag ‘n pleidooi lewer. Terwyl hulle nou besig is, wil hulle nie asseblief die woord vrees ook uit die Bybel uitskryf nie. Vlieg en ander enersdenkende andersdenk-endes weet miskien dat vrees meer as een betekenis kan hê, maar hul charismatiese vriende verstaan dit nie, en wil hulle steeds bangmaak met God. As hulle dalk die Godvresendheid en die vrees van God beter kan vertaal, sal almal, soos Vlieg, weet dat hulle nie vir die God van liefde hoef bang te wees nie.

Premier Mathale rebuked by Limpopo’s SACP More and more of Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale’s allies are turning against him, and he seems to become more isolated by the day. A senior politician — who for obvious reasons wouldn’t like to be identified — told the Bulletin that Mathale’s reshuffle of his cabinet is part of his last agonies. In political circles it is rumoured that Mathale will not see out the year as Premier of Limpopo. The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Limpopo has now also turned on Mathale and the party’s interim provincial secretary, Mr Gilbert Kganyago, said “the SACP has noted with dismay the pronouncements on the cabinet reshuffle by the provincial Premier, Mr Charlie Cassel Mathale”. “This was preceded by an equally problematic but silent reshuffling of chairpersons of different portfolio committees within the legislature two weeks ago, where all the comrades who were opposed to Mr Mathale’s re-election as the ANC Provincial Chairperson were removed from their portfolios and replaced by his loyalists. “This pattern of political purging surely had to culminate in the cabinet reshuffle. Contrary to the claims by the Premier that the reshuffle is meant to enhance service delivery, this is one act that is meant to entrench the tenderpreneurs who have been milking the public purse up to a point of bankruptcy that we find ourselves in,” he said. He added that “this is further intended to undermine the National Cabinet intervention in trying to stabilize the finances of the province and dealing effectively with corruption. “How else does one explain the redeployment, from one portfolio to another, of an MEC whose department is under administration and being investigated by law

enforcement agencies, if not to undermine the work done by the National Cabinet? “In the same breath, what is the rationale behind the removal of ANC NEC members — who have vast government experience after having served under the past two administrations — from the provincial cabinet, except that friends who will not resist the instructions to loot the state coffers had to be appointed, so that the tenderpreneurs could continue in the same old way of looting that led to a situation of total bankruptcy that the province finds itself in at the moment,” Kganyago said. He continued by saying “for this reason, the SACP wishes to reiterate its call for the National Government to place the entire Limpopo executive under administration and for Premier Charlie Cassel Mathale to step down. It is clear from this disruptive intervention that any little time and space that Premier Charlie Cassel Mathale can get will be utilized to further weaken the state in the province. We also call upon all the law enforcement agencies that are dealing with corruption in Limpopo to complete their task quickly so that all the culprits (corrupt elements) might be brought to book.” Kganyago said the SACP further calls for the de-tenderization of the state so that the state could on its own deliver services to the people. He said this is all the more urgent in the light of the massive infrastructure programme that has been announced by the President during his State of the Nation Address. “Certainly such massive infrastructure programmes in Limpopo will be used to enrich a small circle of tenderpreneurs that is connected to the leading figures within the state. These tenders will also be used to destabilize the movement, particularly in the build-up to all the national congresses of our structures this year,” he said.

Kruger lures youth into the Lowveld bush In most people the thought of a career in Kruger National Park evokes a picture of Rangers in khaki and green uniforms... but seldom anything about other career opportunities in the park. This is why KNP in conjunction with the department of education decided to offer educational workshops to familiarise kids between Grades 10 & 11 with the park’s environmental affairs and the career opportunities. The initiative was launched in 2009 in the two provinces bordering the park. According to Bongiwe Nkosi, who deals with pupils studying tourism, “the idea of bringing the
pupils into the park is to expose them to the careers that are available.” “Many pupils don’t view the park as a place where they can find any jobs other than being a ranger. We want to change that concept and make an awareness of other career opportunities available,” she said. About 125 pupils from different schools in the Mopani district attended the workshop in groups of 25 per day for five days. The same was done in Mpumalanga. Apart from learning about the career paths in the park, pupils also had the opportunity to be taken out for a Sunset-drive where they learned about animals and their behaviour. Meanwhile, Solly Themba, the park’s community facilitator said with this initiative KNP aims to recruit more youngsters to work in the park. Asked why they didn’t invite Grade 12 pupils to be part of it as well, Themba said the Grade 12 pupils already know what career path they want to follow. “We believe that we stand a better chance of recruiting those that have not decided what they want to do after school. — Orlando Chauke
MDM strike called off The council of the Mopani District Municipality called off the two day strike that was embarked upon by the workers of the authority. The strike has been called off following an agreement between the council and organised labour, to put together a task team that will work to resolve all matters raised in the union’s memorandum within seven days. According to Mr Neil Shikwambana, a communications officer of the MD, workers delivered a memorandum of grievances to the mayor, complaining
among many other things about discrepancies in post levels and notches, inadequate work resources, non-payment of overtime and a policy review. He added that the demand that Mr Tim Maake, the municipal manager, be removed from his position, was not important and the workers should present facts on why they want him removed. The MDM’s council apologised to the community for any inconvenience as a result of the strike, especially the disruption of water provision and other key services.

Rest in peace — three small words that can do more damage than good, especially if used when the person has not passed on. This is what happened recently to Mr Daan Mills, the retired chief traffic officer of Modjadjiskloof. Somewhere along the line somebody overheard that he had passed on and the rumour spread like wild fire — resulting in his wife
getting a huge number of condolences sent to her. The truth of the matter is that Mills has been very ill the past twelve months but he is doing fine now; recovery is slow but it is happening and the doctors are pleased with his current state of health. The Mills couple now reside in Swartruggens in the North West Province, and they are happy there.

Onder leiding van mnr Jansen en toe mnr Mitchell en ‘n span van die beste onderwysers is ons met liefde getug (ses van die bestes) en deeglik voorberei vir die lewe. Vireers is dit genoeg om ons standpunt te steun, dat ons nie agter ‘n regering moet aan hol wat verspotte terme en woorde uitdink, in plaas van om sinvol en verantwoordelik te regeer nie.

It is often used as a rubbish bin, with plastic and paper floating around in the inch of water left in the fountain. In Council I have asked the question “when will this be fixed?” and “are the repairs budgeted for?”. I was told it is budgeted for, and would be fixed by the end of February 2012. However, nothing has been done (March 16, 2012). It is still not working and I will have to re-ask these questions. I have pointed out to the Council that this reflects on their efficiency — if they cannot fix their own fountain outside their own building, how can they be expected to fix things miles away, in Lenyenye or Nkowankowa? I cannot imagine this broken fountain inspires confidence in anyone.

Die afgelope tyd het daar `n interessante boek verskyn by Tafelberg uitgewers: GOD? Gesprekke oor die oorsprong en uiteinde van alles. In die boek voer Frits Gaum gesprek met bekende gelowiges en George Claassen met bekende persone wat die kerk vaarwel geroep het en sommige ook uitgesproke ateïste is. Twee dinge wat my opgeval het in die gesprekke met mense wat die kerk verlaat het, is die ervaring van die mense dat `n mens in die kerk nie kritiese vrae mag vra nie en die persepsie dat die kerk nie oop is vir die bevindinge van die natuurwetenskap nie. Hoe kan dit wees dat `n mens in die kerk nie kritiese vrae mag vra nie? Die feit dat die mens die vermoë het om vrae te vra en logies te dink is tog seker omdat ons, soos ons in die kerk sou sê, geskape is na die beeld van God. Om gelowig te wees veronderstel tog seker dat jy met jou hele menswees oop is voor God en jou hele self aan God gee as offer. Dit word seker `n probleem as jou vrae nie gebalanseer word met `n verwondering voor God en die skepping nie. Om soos `n kind te glo beteken nie dat jy nie vrae mag stel oor God en die geloof nie, maar beteken dat jy jou lewe aan God toevertrou soos `n kind. En die bevindinge van die natuurwetenskap? Elke nuwe ontdekking behoort ons net meer in verwondering te bring voor die grootsheid van God en die skepping. Christene moet versigtig wees om nie voortdurend die geskiedenis te herhaal toe die kerk vir Galileo Galilei gesê het hy is verkeerd met sy teorie dat die aarde om die son draai nie, net omdat die Bybel sê die aarde is die middelpunt van die skepping. New law to police second-hand goods takes effect on 1 April
The long-awaited Second-Hand Goods Act will come into effect on April 1. A national structure has also been established to deal with the control of second-hand goods. Among other things, the act requires all dealers in secondhand goods to report to the police all suspicious transactions where the seller attempts to provide false particulars, or where the goods are suspected to be stolen or tampered with. Second-hand goods dealers and pawnbrokers will therefore not only have to take reasonable steps to ensure that they do not buy stolen goods or goods that have been tampered with, but also be careful from whom they buy goods. If an unscrupulous dealer is found guilty, a court can impose a prison sentence of u to ten years. Mthethwa said people dealing in or in possession of non-ferrous (controlled metal) cable with a burnt cover are committing an offence, unless they can provide the police with a reasonable explanation for the burnt cover. “This offence too gives the court the power to sentence copper thieves and unscrupulous scrap dealers to imprisonment for a period of ten years. We therefore believe this legislation will assist in combating both copper and property crimes,” Mthethwa said. — Sapa

Stanford Lake College held their annual Cancer Sprayathon Civvies Day. The pupils paid R5 for being in their normal afterschool-wear and had noisy fun spraying each other’s hair in a variety of vibrant colours. The teachers also joined in getting into the right spirit. The money that was raised will go towards cancer research and support.

Make your own
herb pot Whether you want to start a herb garden or just expand your existing one, these

What you will need: Black chalkboard spray paint Terracotta pots Masking tape Newspaper Chalk (for writing) Step-by-Step: The first step is to mark off the parts of the pot you don’t want spray painted. An easy way is to stick
masking tape over the areas. In this instance, stick masking tape over the rim of the pot. Remember to put down newspaper to protect the surface you are working on.

Unicorn also reaps honours at Lim’s championships Five athletes of Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen qualified to take part in the recent Limpopo athletics championships in Polokwane. In front are Rhirandzu Vermeulen and Robin Lacey. At the back are Richard Coleman, Anke Vaughan and Makoma Pilusa. Rhirandzu came fourth in the high jump, Robin fourth in the 80 m and Makoma second in the high jump in their respective age categories.
