Drama at Sapekoe The disputed Sapekoe tea estate in Magoebas-kloof was visited by a contingent of representatives from various sections in the Limpopo Department of Agriculture last week, with plans to renovate the existing houses on the estate. It is seen as a second serious effort within weeks by the Department to go ahead with its plans to uplift the Sapekoe estate into a viable asset and a job creating venture. Two weeks ago approximately 400 people were employed by the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (Gteda) to clear the tea plantation for the planned extract project, approved by the Limpopo government.
However, local tenants of houses on the premises are concerned that they might be evicted in the process to make way for some of the newly employed staff. The contingent visited the house of Mr Gideon Breedt, one of three tenants who signed a ten year contract with the Makgoba Trust to occupy the dwelling. They found his home in excellent condition. He spent more than R470 000 from his own pocket over the past year to make it inhabitable. They did not mention any eviction plans, but he was informed by a reliable source that it was on the cards. Two other tenants, Messrs Sakkie Meyer and Joop Steenkamp (who runs the Sapekoe Tea Garden), will also be affected.

Breedt runs a firewood concern and employs at least 33 workers from the Middelkop compound on a full time basis. He says he will only resettle elsewhere if he is compensated for the expenditure incurred. In the meantime the tenants are without running water since November. A pump was stolen on the pipeline supplying the water, but the Makgoba Trust refuses to replace it. The tenants are obliged to fetch water in huge tanks from the Fire Station in Tzaneen, at a cost of at least R16 000 per month. They prepare to go to court if they do not get amply compensated if eviction becomes reality.
