Agatha, 5) Ms Anza van Vuuren, 6) Mr Pierre Cronje and 7) Mr Hendrik (Rikus) Roets. Cronje, who defected from the ACDP, is also the DA’s number one candidate for the Mopani District Municipality. At present Mr Stanley Letsoalo is the DA’s councillor in the MDM and he is now the number two candidate, with Mr Richard Shivambu as number three. The candidates for the Greater Letaba Municipality (Modjadjiskloof) are: 1) Mr Mattie Willemse, 2) Mr Daniel Motswi (a councillor), 3) Mr Carlton Mopai and 4) Ms Jane Saina. When asked about the shocks and surprises and the fact that the DA could lose out as far as continuity, experience and knowledge of local government go, Ms Desiree van der Walt, the party’s leader in Limpopo, said a long and difficult process had been followed to find the best possible candidates. “We first received the nominations of these people, then the electoral college interviewed them in groups, thereafter a special selection committee interviewed the individuals, followed by the provincial executive who had to approve of the lists and finally the national executive gave the nod. “We looked at a number of things, like merit, demographics, diversity etcetera. We are committed to properly train the candidates who are elected, we will monitor them on an ongoing basis en non-achievers will be replaced,” Van der Walt said.

Vandag is 1 April: Gekkedag! Jammer, hoor…

Francois Aucamp The DA’s candidates in Mopani for the coming municipal elections represent a brand new team, but not all the party’s supporters seem to be happy with this. One “veteran” Tzaneen councillor, Mr Graham McComb, is so disillusioned that he has announced his withdrawal from all party activities. The biggest shock — maybe some people could experience it as a surprise — is that Ms René Pohl is the DA’s number one candidate for Tzaneen. She served as a councillor in Modjadjiskloof and recently moved to Tzaneen. Only Ms Anza van Vuuren of the GTM’s current DA councillors could be back in the council, although it seems to be unlikely. She was sixth on the list, but after McComb’s withdrawal she has moved into the fifth spot. The DA has at present four councillors and the party is not given much of a chance to have more councillors after the elections. Ms Rona McGaffin who has served only a short term as a councillor after a by-election, has decided to rather allocate her time and energy to the Tzaneen Business Club and Stanford Lake College, where she has been appointed as marketing and public relations officer. The following candidates have been nominated for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality: 1) Ms Pohl, 2) Mr Luke Perkings from Haenertsburg, 3) Ms Mavis Sabela from Nkowankowa, 4) Ms Marguerite (Margo) McNeil from

Dra arm mense Uzzihemde?

Verstaan jy?

Kuhestan — a feast of Persian cuisine Jean Aucamp On 21 March the Iranians celebrated their new year. “No-Rooz” in Iranian means “New Day”. It is the new day that starts the year, traditionally the exact astronomical beginning of Spring, the vernal equinox. No-Rooz with its uniquely Iranian characteristics has been celebrated for at least three thousand years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and tradi-

tions of the Zoroastrian, the religion of ancient Persia before the advent of Islam in 700 AD. Kuhestan, a new restaurant in King Edward Drive, Tzaneen (and apparently the only true Iranian restaurant in South Africa) entertained a handful of Iranian guests, some from as far as Durban!, last Sunday evening. Traditional Persian cuisine was served and the new year was met by song and dance.

Kuhestan is run by Brett and Shahrzad Hone, who also own the farm Kuhestan in Magoebaskloof, famous for its avocados and raspberries. They joined hands with chef Honey Soltanmohammadi, who moved from Iran recently, to establish their modest restaurant and to serve traditional Persian dishes. These dishes are not known to South Africans and the cuisine is rather interesting.

Tzaneen electrical capacity up-date in progress The first phase of upgrading the available electrical capacity to Tzaneen CBD and immediate surrounding areas is progressing well. The erection of the pylons that will carry the 4 km twin circuit 66Kv overhead lines around the southern part of Tzaneen will start within days, whilst construction of the 2 x 20 MVA, 66/11Kv substation will start within a month. Although most of these activities are occurring away from the residential areas and thus out of general view of the public, there will, within the next few months be the inevitable digging up of sidewalks as the required 15 km of new 11Kv cables are laid between existing and proposed new substations in the town. “The GTM wishes to apologise for any inconveniences that may be caused during this process and we will also endeavour to keep interruptions to a minimum when it becomes time to connect and energise the new cables,” said Mr Thulani Twala, die GTM’s head of communication and marketing. “Since Council was necessitated in 2007 to stop allowing new or upgraded connections due to the capacity constraints, there has been much speculation and anticipation as to when Council will be able to permit new and upgraded connections again. A special heavy-duty crane had to come from Polokwane to offload the “The good news is that phase one is planned to be comheavy long concrete pylons for the new electrical lines that will run along pleted by December 2011. the outskirts of Tzaneen.

“Although a total of approximately 20 MVA safe capacity will be installed, with the existing Tzaneen substation severely overloaded, some of the newly acquired capacity will be required to offset this overload,” he added. Further good news is that consumers wanting new or upgraded connections can ‘’secure’’ these connections by applying and paying for them now. The advantage is that the costs will be determined according to the 2010/2011 Services Contribution Policy rates, which will have to be revised upwards in time for the forthcoming 2011/2012 financial year that starts on 1 July 2011. Consumers are therefore advised to take advantage of this opportunity between now and 30 June 2011 to apply and pay for their new or upgraded connections, before the price increase. These connections will then be made available around December 2011 as soon as phase one of the project is commissioned. It is important to note that consumers whom were issued letters from Council entitling them to a specific amount of capacity, but who never actually paid for the installation of this entitled capacity, should note that these letters allocating capacity will become null and void once phase one is complete. Available electrical capacity will be allocated on a “first paid’’ basis.

Lightning strikes killing a doctor and a dog Susan Ettmayr General Practitioner Dr Lynne Dowd (51) from Sydney in Australia and Zinzi, a Labrador, died after being struck by lightning on Brawn’s Knob, 22 km from Haenertsburg, at lunchtime on Thursday last week. The gneiss boulder, consisting of iron and granite, is on private property. It forms part of Charles and Ann Luther’s farm and they often walk up the fairly steep incline to the plateau with the spectacular view, and then down the other side. It was a sunny day when Charles (58) and Ann (57), with Zinzi and their other Labrador Jatjie, went up Brawn’s Knob with Lynne and her husband Bruce (53) an emergency nurse, as well as their friends Colin Walwyn (54) an electrical engineer, and his wife Aislinn (52) a lawyer. Susan Ettmayr Don’t know what to do with your children over the Kiwi Festival in Haenertsburg this weekend? Take them to Wegraakbosch farm on the Cheerio Road. Boerepolitiek of...?

No, Bulletin Zandile Ndaba, Senior Manager: Coops & CPPP, Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), Sunnyside, Pretoria, writes: Your article on March 25 titled “Extravagant party to celebrate… the Party” refers. It is misleading for your publication to brand the event that took place at the Emergent Farmers Tours Agricultural Cooperative on March 19 as electioneering. Government work does not stop just because we are close the elections. It is also misleading to attribute the success of the Cooperative thus far only to private funding institutions. The Small Enterprise Development Agency’s (Seda) Cooperative and Community Public Private Partnerships (Coops & CPPP) programme has implemented several interventions to assist the cooperative. Seda offers non-financial services to SMMEs; our Coops & CPPP programme is about partnerships and the aim of the event was to bring together various role players – including private institutions - to garner further support for the cooperative to help them grow even further, be sustainable and create more jobs. We are confident we will achieve this through planned further interventions with MASHAV – Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation, the Limpopo Department of Agriculture’s Revitalisation of Small Holder Irrigation Schemes Programme and the Department of Trade & Industry, to name some role players who have made firm commitments to the Cooperative. Our view is that the Cooperative needs more than just funding in order to be sustainable. When funds are made available, they need to be managed properly in order to achieve the desired end. This is why Seda has conducted extensive training for the Co-

operative members to help them understand crucial business concepts and how to market their enterprise so that it grows. We are helping them look beyond the contract they have currently with Pepperdew International and are exposing them to opportunities that will enable the Cooperative to be sustainable whether the contract is there or not. Lastly, your article states that the farm on which the Cooperative operates is a state farm. This is incorrect. The Cooperative uses communal land owned by Mmakgoshi Maake on a permission-to-occupy basis. • We gladly apologise for any wrong information contained in our report and we thank you for pointing it out and sharing your perspective with our readers. It would have been nice and informative if you could have shared a bit more with us though. Why was this function held now, and not earlier or later on? Why was nobody from Nedbank invited? Why was nobody from Peppadew invited? Why was nobody from the local media invited to witness this grand occasion? Why spend so much money to celebrate a project while the farmers don’t know which way because they don’t have money to continue farming? Our report dealt with the matter of a lack of funds that kept the new farmers from getting on with what they wanted and badly needed to do. You confirm that the Seda didn’t help them with capital, but fail to say who helped them. We salute Seda for what you are doing to train the farmers and to empower them to run their farming activities properly and profitably. However, without capital they are lost. And that was the crux of our report. The fact that the private sector had to get them onto their feet, so to speak, has been ignored and the celebration seems to have been badly timed. Hence our report that it smelled of party political opportunism. — Editor

A question that is often asked today is “Does God still heal today?” This is true of many who have lived with a loved one who has suffered from an illness for a long time and no cure seems to be available. I speak of first hand knowledge of this and I could rightly say, “No God does not heal today” look at how this person is suffering. But I do not believe this, I believe that God does heal today, perhaps not in the way many of us expect it to happen. But happen it does. I think that many of us want to see some miraculous scenario, where the person suffering is suddenly healed in a dramatic way. Please do not get me wrong when I say this, I believe it does happen, but I have yet to see this happen in person. Healing services are held regularly and yes people are cured by prayer. But God also works through the gifts He gave to us, Doctors and surgeons have been the gift of healing by God and if they use them correctly, miracles happen. What was considered incurable many years ago is curable today. God gave others gifts of being able to study the illness and find a cure. So all we have to believe is that God still heals today. We have just to ask Him and in His own time all will be revealed. God Bless.

Don’t miss next weekend’s power boat racing on the Tzaneen Dam!

Gelukkige wenner Mr Kgashane Ratopola, from near Lenyenye, was one of the winners of Afrisam’s national lucky draw. He is one of only three winners in Limpopo and won a trailer by simply buying cement at Letaba Buildit in Nkowankowa and filling in a form. Ratopola was congratulated in front of his new trailer by Mr Peru Walkenshaw, a manager at Letaba Buildit, and Mr Neo Poho, AfriSam Sales Consultant for Limpopo. Photo: Retha Nel

jiskloof sê sedert verlede Vrydag is kabels by minstens vier mense in die dorp gesteel.

B Mkhabela upgraded Duncan Mogale Learners and teachers of B Mkhabela Secondary school in Mhangweni Village are jubilant that their school is being rebuilt. The development started in September 2010. The school only had four class rooms with four mobile class rooms. Four more class rooms, an administrator’s office, toilets and a security office have been built and are already occupied. Mr Simon Phakula, one of the teachers, said there are still not enough class rooms, but the additions make a huge difference. Phakula also said there are seven teachers, excluding the principal, and this situa-

tion causes some inconvenience, since some teachers have to teach at least two or three subjects in one class room and teach pupils in an average of five classes. The teachers teach from Grades 8 to 12. They are, however, quite ecstatic about the new class rooms and now hope more class rooms will be built and more teachers will be appointed. Committed community members showed unmeasured kindness for the school as they volunteer to clean classrooms, wash windows and help watering palm trees donated by Phakula from his own nursery.

Munnik Meerkat was great fun

Plasies is soos visse tuis in water

Sakel Marise by 071 871 2205.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of your extra body weight can result in significant improvements to your overall health such as lowering your cholesterol and reducing your risk of diabetes. To lose the extra weight you can make weekly changes in your diet and lifestyle that will help you stay focused and on track with your weight loss. Prepare healthy foods at the beginning

of each week that you will be able to eat throughout the week. Having easy access to healthy foods will make you more likely to eat them instead of eating unhealthy options. Make whole grain pastas, vegetable soups and leafy green salads that you can keep fresh throughout the week. Also try to exercise at least 3 times a week and remember to drink enough water.
