Agatha, 5) Ms Anza van Vuuren, 6) Mr Pierre Cronje and 7) Mr Hendrik (Rikus) Roets. Cronje, who defected from the ACDP, is also the DA’s number one candidate for the Mopani District Municipality. At present Mr Stanley Letsoalo is the DA’s councillor in the MDM and he is now the number two candidate, with Mr Richard Shivambu as number three. The candidates for the Greater Letaba Municipality (Modjadjiskloof) are: 1) Mr Mattie Willemse, 2) Mr Daniel Motswi (a councillor), 3) Mr Carlton Mopai and 4) Ms Jane Saina. When asked about the shocks and surprises and the fact that the DA could lose out as far as continuity, experience and knowledge of local government go, Ms Desiree van der Walt, the party’s leader in Limpopo, said a long and difficult process had been followed to find the best possible candidates. “We first received the nominations of these people, then the electoral college interviewed them in groups, thereafter a special selection committee interviewed the individuals, followed by the provincial executive who had to approve of the lists and finally the national executive gave the nod. “We looked at a number of things, like merit, demographics, diversity etcetera. We are committed to properly train the candidates who are elected, we will monitor them on an ongoing basis en non-achievers will be replaced,” Van der Walt said.

Vandag is 1 April: Gekkedag! Jammer, hoor…
Francois Aucamp The DA’s candidates in Mopani for the coming municipal elections represent a brand new team, but not all the party’s supporters seem to be happy with this. One “veteran” Tzaneen councillor, Mr Graham McComb, is so disillusioned that he has announced his withdrawal from all party activities. The biggest shock — maybe some people could experience it as a surprise — is that Ms René Pohl is the DA’s number one candidate for Tzaneen. She served as a councillor in Modjadjiskloof and recently moved to Tzaneen. Only Ms Anza van Vuuren of the GTM’s current DA councillors could be back in the council, although it seems to be unlikely. She was sixth on the list, but after McComb’s withdrawal she has moved into the fifth spot. The DA has at present four councillors and the party is not given much of a chance to have more councillors after the elections. Ms Rona McGaffin who has served only a short term as a councillor after a by-election, has decided to rather allocate her time and energy to the Tzaneen Business Club and Stanford Lake College, where she has been appointed as marketing and public relations officer. The following candidates have been nominated for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality: 1) Ms Pohl, 2) Mr Luke Perkings from Haenertsburg, 3) Ms Mavis Sabela from Nkowankowa, 4) Ms Marguerite (Margo) McNeil from
